Hunt in Africa

Taxidermy:Q&A

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q. Why should I consider using a Cape to Cairo Safari’s preferred taxidermist in Africa as apposed to one in the United States?

A.  The typical African trophy animal is short haired and lives in warm to hot climates. The stress of handling, salting, drying, dipping, shipping, rehydrating for dipping and the typical tanning process to ultimately mount the trophy is lengthy and very harsh on the delicate hides. The time alone can result in damage beyond repair due to parasites and bacteria that are unseen by the naked eye. It is far better to have these delicate hides processed as quickly as possible. By the mere nature of the various import/export laws it is practically impossible to process quickly when shipping to countries outside Africa. The other benefit is that in the unfortunate situation where a hide is ruined in the field or during shipment, there are many more options available to an African Taxidermist to rectify the problem.

Q. I have heard of hunters losing their trophies and never seeing them again once they Leave Africa. How can I avoid this tragedy?

A.  The only way to ensure proper handling and transport of your sport hunted trophies is to book your hunt with a reputable outfitter, professional hunter (PH) or Safari Company. Lost trophies are only one of many pitfalls of inexperience or unscrupulous outfitters, professional hunters and safari companies. What may seem like a bargain hunt may end up costing you everything the hunt was worth and more.

Q. I am not sure of all the choices involved in mounting my sport hunted trophies, Can you help?

A.  Yes, our preferred taxidermists have been in the taxidermy business for many years and they can make suggestions and provide you with photos via email of some of the more popular mounts. It is important for you to consider how you want to arrange your trophy room and let us know. We can work with you to make it a success. We encourage all of our clients to visit our taxidermist’s studios in person whenever they are near Johannesburg or Windhoek. We can normally arrange to pick you up and return you to your hotel on your way to and from your hunting area. A visit will give you an opportunity to discuss the many options available and a first hand look of the variety of mounts that will make your decision easier.

Q. I will not be able to visit a studio, how will I be able to communicate my final decisions to you?

A.  The ideal situation is to have your PH or Cape to Cairo plan a visit to our studios after your hunt. In this way we can sit and discuss your order in detail. However, in a case where this is not possible we have knowledgeable and cheerful staff standing by to discuss your choices by email. We have found this a simple and effective form of correspondence. We can also communicate by phone or fax in order to help you make the important decisions with regards to preserving your most precious hunting memories from South Africa.

Q. What if I am hunting in an African country other than South Africa and I want to use one of your Preferred Taxidermists as my taxidermist?

A.  Arrangements can be made to ship your trophies to our preferred taxidermists. The PH or Safari Company will organize the necessary shipping arrangements and export permits from the country that you visited. They will contact us to arrange the import permits here in South Africa/Namibia. Once all the permits are issued by the Governments of each country, the shipment will be made. If you contact us well in advance of your hunt we can provide you with shipping tags for each and every piece of your trophy shipment.

Q. I am a taxidermist and I want to skin my trophies, is that allowed?

A.  Yes of course, most Safari Companies and PH’s allow this. Be sure to discuss this with your PH before your hunt.

Q. How do I ensure that the trophies are skinned and treated properly in the field?

A.  As is the case with lost trophies, only experienced and reputable PH’s and Safari Companies employ the most skilled skinners and maintain consistently high standards. Our preferred taxidermists is capable of correcting some serious errors such as wounds and skinning mistakes, but as with any taxidermist, they are limited to the raw materials provided. Proper field treatment is the best foundation for the beautiful finished product you will want to treasure for years to come.

Q. I took a beautiful Impala trophy but shot the cape to pieces, is there anything your taxidermists can do to fix that?

A.  Yes, they maintain warehouses of high quality capes consisting of many of the more common and popular species. In many cases they replace a damaged skin. Although this is done on a case by case basis, it may save an otherwise totally lost trophy.

Q. I have heard that African taxidermists use inferior chemicals and processes, Is that true?

A.  There is no truth to that statement. Our taxidermists use only the finest materials available in the industry. We produce museum quality mounts that will maintain their original beauty for several lifetimes.

Q. How do trophies get from the field to your studio?

A.  Your PH or Cape to Cairo will arrange for transportation to our taxidermists studios. It is wise to discuss this with your PH or Cape to Cairo when you book your hunt. In some cases there is a transportation charge for shipping to our studios, depending on the location of the hunting area as arranged through Cape to Cairo.

Q. How long will it take you to finish my trophies?

A.  The typical turn around time is 12 to 15 months depending on the shop loading and the trophies received. Full body Elephants, Rhino, Giraffe etc, will require more time. Estimates are provided when we receive the trophies.

Q. Does this mean that I will receive my trophies 12 to 14 months?

A.  There will be additional time required beyond our control including the transportation once the trophies leave our studio. The time required will depend on the method you choose. Air freight averages 2 to 3 weeks and ocean freight adds 8 to 10 weeks but at a substantial cost saving over air freight.

Q. Will my trophies be safe by sea freight?

A.  Yes, the trophies are crated in sealed wooden crates and loaded in sealed ocean transfer “sea train” containers. The entire container is shipped to the destination. This ensures a minimum chance of loss or damage.

Q. How are the trophies prepared for shipment?

A.  The trophies are carefully packed in specially designed crates to minimize the size and cost to you. After crating we contact our shipping company, Safari Cargo Systems Inc. (SCS), who collect the crate from our shop and make all of the necessary arrangements for transport to the United States. You will be notified when the shipment leaves our studios and will be provided with the contact at SCS to make arrangements for payment and choice of shipping method.

Q. How much will it cost to ship my trophies?

A.  The cost will depend on the size and weight of the crate and the destination. We Do all we can to minimize the size of the crate by carefully packing the trophies in the smallest space possible. The cost is calculated on the total weight of the crate or in most cases the total volume of the crate. The volume is typically the determining factor, since the shipping companies charge based on the amount of weight they could have transported in that space. You may see an equivalent weight charged based on the volume. You can contact SCS for shipping costs.

 Q. Once the trophies arrive in the United States, will they be sent to my home address?

A.  The shipment requires clearance by the US Fish and Game Department, US Customs, and the US Department of Agriculture. These inspections are arranged by your import broker and may take anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks and is depending on how busy the port of arrival is and the time of the year. After the inspections are completed and the shipment is released you can make arrangements for home delivery or warehouse pickup as you desire.

Q. You mentioned an import broker, what is that and how do I get one?

A.  The import broker is a company that specializes in the receiving of shipments from foreign countries. (For example we use, Fauna and Flora in New York city as the import broker. Our Taxidermists have worked with F&F for many years and have a close working relationship and they are experienced in all matters relating to you getting your trophies). We take care of all of the paper work and notify you when the trophies are ready to ship. SCS then works closely with you to coordinate the shipment and payment of transport fees. You will be provided with a point of contact at the import broker. Once the shipment arrives at the destination port of entry, the import broker will contact you to make arrangements for payment and coordinating the necessary inspections and final delivery to your door.

Q. What if my uncle is a taxidermist and in order to keep peace in the family I must have him do the taxidermy work?

A.  When skins and horns of trophies are sent to the United States they still must go through a process at our Taxidermists in order to be allowed to ship. The “green” skins and skulls must be treated, often called “dipped” to ensure that there is no transfer of bacteria or other microscopic organisms that would be harmful if transported to another country. Our taxidermists are authorized to perform all of the necessary treatments to safely ship green trophies to any destination. Once they are dipped and shipped they will pass through the same inspections coordinated by the import broker. The import broker will then ship the green trophies to a taxidermist certified to receive green trophies in the United States. There the trophies will be treated again and can be mounted there or sent to the taxidermist of your choice.

Q. How much does it cost to have my trophies done in Africa?

A.  See our taxidermy price lists. Additionally we only require a 30% deposit at the time the trophies arrive in our studio. The final balance due will be requested as the work nears completion, typically one or two months before they ship. That means that you would have nearly a year to make the final payment.

Q. What form of payment do you accept?

A.  We accept cash, wire transfers and various forms of checks. Checks will not be credited to the account until they clear payment at the bank. When making the final payment by checks, the shipping date could be delayed due to bank processing times. If you know you will be paying by personal check let us know and we can prepare the final bill with sufficient time to prevent added delays.

Q. When do you use sea-freight versus airfreight?

A.  As a rule of thumb, we normally use shipping by airfreight in most cases. When there is a large group of hunters and a full container of trophies can be shipped by boat to one location, there is normally a significant savings. We do consolidate containers and ship trophies by sea freight for customers that live within a radius of 150 Miles from NY. Should you live anywhere else in the USA, we normally use airfreight as the final costs are then cheaper.

Q. What other costs can I expect to pay?

A.  Other costs will be billed by your Import broker. It normally includes Import Documentation and freight to your preferred destination. In the event you need Cites permits, to import into the USA, you will also be charged for that.

Q. What is dipping and disinfection?

A.  Also called Dip & Pack or just Dipping, this is a veterinary regulated process where the aim is to kill all bacteria and pathogens in order to make raw trophies safe for export.

For export from South Africa to the EU, USA and most other countries, we are required to perform the following process on raw material in order for it to be considered “Dipped”:

  • Skins & capes & skulls were submersed in a organic acid solution with a ph of 2.5 for 48 hours
  • Skins & capes were then neutralized and dry-salted or wet-salted for a minimum of 14 days before dispatch
  • The consignment: has undergone all precautions to avoid re-contamination with pathogenic agents after treatment and has not been in contact with any product of a lesser health status.
  • Skulls & bones have been soaked, boiled for 1½ hours, de-greased and bleached in a concentrated solution of hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) and then dried.
  • In addition to the above, EU countries and Canada require the following: Skins, capes & skulls are packed in individual, transparent and closed, leak proof packages, which prevent contamination.

Dipped trophies are still considered as raw trophies, so no tanning of the hides has taken place to preserve the hides. This means that the hides will still deteriorate if left for a long time or if they get wet after the process. The aim of Dipping is simply to make sure that the trophies are safe for export with regards to disease control.

For this reason, no guarantee on dipping trophies can be offered by the facility doing the process. No insurance will cover the trophies for damage due to hair loss or deterioration due to bacterial damage, so the client runs the risk of the hides arriving at their taxidermist and being unusable without having recourse for this damage.

Q. What are the typical costs involved with shipping of the taxidermy work?

A.  Normally the following costs make up your freight bill:

  • Cartage and Trucking
  • Fuel and Security
  • Export Documentation & CBP
  • Insurance (optional)
  • Transit Permits
  • Air-freight / Sea-freight
  • Facility Fee

Cost of Dip, Pack and Crate...The Real Cost???

  • Thread starter CK1
  • Start date Jan 10, 2010
  • Jan 10, 2010

I have been doing my homework preparing for my first African safari for nearly a year. I've talked to numerous outfitters and negotiated rates and trophy fees. I also spent 3 of the last four days at the Dallas Safari Club convention speaking to many of the same outfitters plus several more. One expense that caught me off guard was the cost of dip, pack and crate of trophies. I plan to bring home 6-7 animals, all plains game. For example one operator in Zim says 3-10 species is $600. One outfitter in Namibia said to expect a $2000 bill. And SA estimates run the gamut between the two. What have y'all had to pay to dip, pack and crate 6-7 animals??? Thanks. CK

  • Jan 11, 2010

CK1, some outfitters charge an additional cost of dip & pack and some have it included in the package. In Tanzania for instance, trophy care/dipping/packing is mostly included in the package cost (i for one include it) and the only additional cost to you is the shipping charges which depend on the size and weight of the shipment.

Thunder head

Thunder head

Good luck with this portion of your trip. They have you over a barrell once you harvest your trophies. I got quotes for the 5 animals i wanted the most. I added an extra warthog skull and 2 backskins. I was satisfied with the extra cost from my dip and pac and coppersmith. The cost i had to pay to get them from Joberg to atlanta was double what i was quoted. When i asked for an explination of why the cost was so different the communication lines went silent for good. To get them to my taxidermist will end up being half the price of the taxidermy itself.

enysse

You can read my posts in the taxidermy section. But I believe it is one of the crookedness run business, in the whole world. It certain puts a damper on a safari with unexpected costs. I have had other SCI members in hushed whispers tell me the same thing. Ultimately if your lucky, you can take your safari costs and double it on a big plains game hunt to get the animals to your home and on the wall. The shipping and dip and pack costs change with the wind, with most taxidermist. I got smart on my second trip and had everything written down on paper and agree to before I let anyone handle the animals. Everytime I think of hunting in Africa I think of dealing with the taxidermists and shippers, and what the true cost of the hunt is really going to be. And yes, I'm frustrated by the whole process. Good Luck!

Thank you for your post Enysse. Not all Taxidermist are like that but there is some taxidermist which are a big headache for us as PH's and Outfitters as well. They abuse the system for there own pockets and ruin a "what is suppose to be" wonderful time in Africa for the hunter. I think it is time for us hunters to expose such taxidermist. Just my opinion.

  • Feb 2, 2010

I appreciate the advice I got on here. I've actually gotten quotes to dip, pack and crate 7 animals to DFW from a taxidermist. They're in the ball park and it's nice to have some peace about this.

The problem exist with the Airlines and on this side of the big pond, not in Africa..Fish and wildlife inspection, airline fees that change at their will, particularly British Air...Last time I had something shipped was a medium size Cape Buffalo skull and cape, and a Zebra skin and they tried to bilk me for $2500..I told them to keep'em, the Brits were amazed, they thought I was kidding!...fortunatly I could do that but many could not as that may have been their only trophies of a life time.

Intercon

  • Feb 9, 2010

Hi CK1, the ongoing debate on actual costs of dip and pack linked to indeterminable freight rates at the time of quoting is always always going to be open to abuse, and ryan is correct once your trophies have been shot there is not always the time or stand point to negotiate on. i am glad though that you have taken the time to educate yourself on these hurdles BEFORE you go on your hunt. i run a company called intercon freight, that has both a trophy recieving centre, a dip and pack centre and a freight forwarding centre all under one roof in zimbabwe. we take possession of your trophy from your outfitter or PH until its delivery to you personlly. one quote no service providers inbetween. if you would like some more information on your trophies or what to expect drop me a note and i would be pleased to answer all of your concerns etc.

Andreas Duhring

  • Mar 7, 2010

CK1, Gentlemen, the trophies you hunted belong to you, not the Outfitter, PH or your booking agent with whom you booked the hunt or hunted with. This means you have every right to querry who and how much it's going to cost to ship your trophies home. Nobody has got anybody over a barrel here. There are very few Outfitters that do their own dipping, packing and shipping of their client's trophies, this means they use a service provider and will charge for this service if it is included in theirs. If not they will deliver the trophies to a Taxidermist or Dip and Pack agent of your choice. Note of your choice. You must remember most and I do mean most clients are clueless as to how their trophies are going to get back to their home country and believe anything their Outfitter tells them. Outfitters get a commission from the Taxidermists they do business with and will often encourage you to have your work done locally to get this commission. Also remember your hunting trophies must conform to import requirements of the country of import and as such have to go through a minimal process, then they must be packaged to conform to airline specs and then shipped. To give you an idea of how a Dip-Pack is run: We have to conform to State vet regulations in order to run and operate our facillity A yearly inspection and licence fee. Wed are part 108 CAA approved which means we are a known consignor. Also a once a year inspection and re-approval We use only timber and packing material approved once again a certification process and yearly inspection and re-approval. These are but a few of the regulations we must comply with to make your cargo safe to export. Gone are the days when items where thrown into a box and put on an aircraft. Every regulation we must comply with adds a cost to you the end user, the same as your F&W regulations and inspections you must pay for on your end. Processing your trophies for export is a necessary evil but you as the hunter can control this process and you have every right to choose whom you want to do business with. I always advise my client to contact me to tell me whom they are hunting with and I make all the arrangements to collect the trophies and finally get them to you. This is never a problem. Please remember the less you want to do yourself and the more you expect your outfitter to do for you the more it's going to cost you. We have a special offer on for this year which equates to about a 20% saving on our regular price.

Just this past Friday I wired my final funds to get my trophies shipped home form RSA. My trophies and what I had shipped home are as follows. Waterbuck - skull, horns, cape, backskin Gemsbok - skull, horns, cape, backskin Springbok - skull, horns, cape Impala - skull, horns, cape I used the taxidermist my outfitter works with for my dip and pack. I paid $100 per animal for dip/pack. I knew this cost before I went and was fine with it as I checked some other places and seemed to be inline. My cost to get these animals from Safari Cargo Sytems' warehouse in Jo-burg to the tannery in Michigan was $914. This included all freight (air), customs fees/broker at JFK (Fauna & Flora), and shipping from JFK to the tannery in Michigan. I have them going to the tannery as that's who my taxidermist uses and it was "6 to one- 1/2 dozen to another" on costs if I had them shipped to me and then the hides still shipped back the the tannery. Figured one less step I had to deal with in offloading trophies. So, for those for animals I have $1,314 wrapped up in shipping/dip costs. Some might think that's high but I don't. I had talked to several people before I went asking what shipping costs would be and knew it would be about $200-$250/animal. Like I said that's just for shipping, not dip/pack.

TRAVEL EXPRESS

TRAVEL EXPRESS

Guys, something to keep in mind that we have learned over the years is to have your outfitter cut the top of the skull plate with horns in tact of your animals that you plan to have mounted. Most taxidermists in Africa will give you a break on the preparation and cleaning if it is not a full skull as it's less work for them. It also saves weight in your crate, which equates to less freight charges over the water and to your final destination. Of course you don't want to do this if you think you might want to do a european mount of the skull.

Andreas I have a question that you may of assistance. I will be hunting the Cape region this May for several species found down there such as blue duiker, Vaal Rhebok and Cape grysbok. Then in October, I'll be in Zimbabwe hunting Cape buffalo and several species of PG such as klipspringer with the possibility of spotted hyena (hopefully) added as well. With that said, would there be any way to have my May safari be held in country until my Zim hunts completes and then once my Zim hunt arrives in SA, have both safaris combined and sent Stateside via ocean freight under one combined crate? I know its alot to ask for, but surely worth trying if it saves me from having to pay for 2 crates sent in the same year. Any ideas or options you know of? Thank you.

  • Mar 9, 2010

Scotty, best liase with the taxidermist in Zim and confirm if he sends his cargo via JHB. While this is possible you are still going to sit with two set of documentation and two lots of cargo meaning they may as well belong to two different people. Given that the two service providers use the same shipping agent you may get a better rate if you combine the shipments. You would also have to co-ordinate all the import and export permits. Shipping from two different countries is normally considered a separate shipment from each. I know it's not what you wanted to hear, but I've had shipping costs from Moz to JHB equal that of sending the same freight to the US form SA. Transport in Africa is veeeeery expensive as we don't have the same infrastructure that you have in the US, plus we often don't have the choice of operators that you have. if you need more info please send me an email and I will gladly assist.

Restoring the Great Karoo one reintroduction at a time

safari cargo crate

It was late in the evening when we sat down for a beautifully prepared three-course dinner at the impeccably decorated Manor House in Samara – a game reserve located near Graaff-Reinet in the Great Karoo. The main topic making the rounds was about the much-anticipated lion release, which took place earlier in the day. Well, technically it happened, though not in the way it was planned…

Waking up at the crack of dawn, the Samara team and a small group of lucky people, including yours truly, had eagerly made our way to the boma where two lions – Titus, a three-year-old male, and Sikelele, a four-year-old female – had been living for the past six weeks. Today was the day of their release into the reserve. A day that would herald the start of new beginnings in Samara history.

The lions had been spotted at the far end of the boma, sleeping under a bush. The gate was quickly opened, and a fresh gemsbok carcass lay just a few metres outside the entrance in the hopes to entice them out… We waited quietly in the game drive vehicles, about 25 metres away from the gate, the first warm rays of the sun hitting our backs as the sound of cameras zooming in on anything that moved broke the otherwise silent group.

A few minutes passed, then murmurings amongst the rangers and a few concerned glances were shared. Maybe they haven’t noticed the gate was open? Perhaps they need more time?

Half an hour later and still no sign. One of the rangers decided to check up on the location of the lions by circling the outside perimeter of the boma. He soon came back and dejectedly reported that the lions were still dozing under the bushes… flat-cats.

Landscape of the Great Karoo and location of Samara Private Game Reserve

So, with the promise from Marnus, the general manager, that we would be informed as soon as any movement happened, we continued with our day, taking advantage of the available time to explore the vast landscape of Samara.

Now a lion release might not seem like a big deal – relocations happen all the time across the country – but in this case, it is quite significant for what Samara stands for, and what the owners and staff are hoping to achieve for the Great Karoo and its wildlife.

THE GREAT KAROO – THE ‘PLACE OF GREAT DRYNESS’

To understand more about the Great Karoo and the importance behind animal reintroductions by Samara, let’s first take a brief moment to step back in time to see how the Great Karoo became what it is today and why it’s such a unique and special place.

A semi-desert landscape, the Great Karoo is considered internationally famous in palaeontological circles for its abundance of pre-dinosaur fossils. The region covers two significant extinction events, the end-Permian (252 million years ago) and the end-Triassic (200 million years ago), and is home to rich fossil beds that preserve approximately 80 million years of vertebrate evolution that documents early primitive reptiles to the transitional stage between reptiles and mammals. This is the only place in the world where such an extended fossil record of the early evolution of ‘reptilian’ life is preserved in a single basin.

Incredible geological transformations over millions of years from glaciers to desert dunes to volcanic lava, and erosion over time, helped create the landscape that we see today.

Fast forward to recent history, and we discover that less than two hundred years ago large herds of antelope – such as eland, blesbok and springbok – roamed the grass plains. Also present were quagga (now extinct), Cape buffalo, black rhino, ostrich, wildebeest, lions, leopards, painted wolves (African wild dogs), hyenas and jackals.

Amongst the wide variety of indigenous wildlife, the springbok stood out above all others for their strange and puzzling behaviour.

What could be said to be on par with that of the Great Wildebeest Migration in East Africa, the Karoo once played host to its very own migration spectacle of trekbokke – ‘migrating antelope’.

Springbok in Samara Private Game Reserve

Not much is known about this phenomenon as it was never scientifically studied, but accounts from the 19th century tell of herds numbering in the millions.

In his book, The Migratory Springboks of South Africa, the Trekbokke (1925), S.C. Cronwright-Schreiner recalls the time in 1896 when he and two farmers, who were used to estimating small stock numbers, attempted to estimate the amount of migrating springboks, saying:

“With the aid of the field-glasses, we deliberately formed a careful estimate, taking them in sections and checking one another’s calculations. We eventually computed the number to be not less than five hundred thousand — half a million springboks in sight at one moment. I have no hesitation in saying that that estimate is not excessive.”

However, the springboks that they could see were just part of a massive herd, which in total covered an area of approximately 138 x 15 miles (222 x 24 km)!

Cronwright-Schreiner declared: “To say they migrate in millions is to employ an ordinary figure of speech, used vaguely to convey the idea of great numbers; but in the case of these bucks it is the literal truth.”

Following the rains and resultant nutrition across the Karoo basin, these migrating herds were of such enormity that it would sometimes take a week for all the springbok to pass.

They would eat their way across the landscape, an unstoppable force grazing their way through vegetation like a locust swarm. This may sound destructive but, like a natural veld fire, the springbok manure and hoof action helped prepare the soil for the next rainy season, and also helped to prune and invigorate the vegetation.

Lawrence G. Green’s book, Karoo (1955), provides a personal account by Gert van der Merwe of the great springbok migration:

“At last came a faint drumming. No doubt the Bushman had sensed this drumming hours before, with his ear to the ground. Only now could Gert hear it. The cloud of dust was dense and enormous, and the front rank of the springbok, running faster than galloping horses, could be seen. They were in such numbers that Gert found the sight frightening. He could see a front line of buck at least three miles long, but he could not estimate the depth. Ahead of the main body were swift voorlopers , moving along as though they were leading the army.”

Unfortunately, the last natural springbok migration was recorded in 1896. Due to human interference – by overzealous hunters and farmers dividing the land with barbed wire fences – the springboks faced too many obstacles to continue their natural route, and so it came to an end.

Samara's 'Samara Mara' with 360 degree views of the Great Karoo landscape

The expansion of human settlement in the Karoo caused much of the wildlife to be displaced or wiped out. With the occupation of the area by stock farmers, cattle, sheep and goats gradually replaced the wildlife and the grass receded along with the changed grazing and weather patterns.

It is at this point where Samara comes in. Reintroducing indigenous wildlife back into the Great Karoo has been a vision of Samara’s and its owners. Since the inception in 1997 of Samara, Mark and Sarah Tompkins have made it their mission to rewild the Great Karoo, recreating a self-sustaining ecosystem and restoring it to its former glory.

Over the last 22 years they have been painstakingly restoring eleven reclaimed farms that were once degraded and overgrazed, removing the internal fences of their 70,000 acres property and allowing the land to first rest and recuperate for at least a decade before reintroducing indigenous species that had gone locally extinct. They hope that one day the reserve could act as a link between other conservation areas – from Camdeboo National Park in the west to Mountain Zebra National Park in the east – creating an ecological corridor for wildlife to traverse, and perhaps even see the return of such great spectacles like the great springbok migration.

REINTRODUCTION SUCCESS STORIES

Since their journey began, Samara has engaged in an ambitious programme of animal reintroduction, some of the more notable reintroductions to date include:

In 2004, Sibella – a young female cheetah rescued from abuse at the hands of hunters – was the first among three cheetahs to be released into Samara. They were the first cheetahs to step back into the wilds of the Karoo in 130 years, after hunting and persecution drove them to local extinction in the 1870s. Sibella thrived in her new environment, successfully rearing 19 cubs in four litters before she died of natural causes in 2015 at the ripe old age of 14. Near the end of 2018 Samara was proud to announce that Sibella’s last daughter, Chilli, gave birth to a second litter of cubs.

Sibella the cheetah

White and desert-adapted black rhino

Already under serious threat from poaching and illegal trade, Samara did their part for rhino conservation in 2006 when they introduced white rhinos into the reserve. Then in 2013, they introduced south-western black rhino ( Diceros bicornis bicornis ) – a desert-adapted subspecies of the critically endangered black rhino. According to Samara, they are one of only two private reserves in South Africa to house this subspecies, the population stronghold being in South African National Parks and Namibia.

Samara takes rhino protection very seriously, and several measures form part of the anti-poaching strategy, including dehorning, patrols, surveillance and community education.

In the hopes to restore what once was, Samara recently reintroduced 800 springbok to the reserve and has plans to increase that number to several thousand in a bid to recreate the natural ecosystem processes of holistic grazing. It is hoped that the reintroduction of springbok and the growth of the herds will enable the reserve to meet its objective of reversing decades of prior livestock overgrazing.

After a 150-year absence, elephants were successfully reintroduced into Samara in October 2017. A founder family herd of six elephants came from Kwandwe Game Reserve near Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape and were soon joined by two mature bulls, who came from Phinda Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, in 2018.  Both elephant reintroductions were part-sponsored by the NGO Elephants, Rhinos, People.

The reintroduction of elephants has helped restore the function of the megaherbivore ecosystem processes in Samara. They have plenty to eat, and no supplementary feeding is required as they enjoy grazing mainly on cabbage trees and jacket plums that grow in the reserve.

Tracking collars have been fitted to two of the elephants: the sub-matriarch of the family herd, and the one bull, so that they can be tracked for conservation, ecotourism and academic purposes.

safari cargo crate

Reintroducing a founding lion pride has been Samara’s latest milestone in its journey to restoring a fully-functioning Great Karoo ecosystem. Lions once roamed the mountains and plains of the Karoo, though over time were wiped out by hunters and farmers, with the last wild lion spotted in the region in 1840. There is a pressing need for conservation initiatives targeting lions as the species has dwindled by 43% in the past 20 years, with current lion populations estimated to be between 20 000 and 30 000. However, researchers believe that the number is closer to 20,000.

At the end of 2018, a new chapter started as the first pride of two lions arrived at Samara, and were officially released into the reserve in January 2019. This marks Samara as the first Big 5 private game reserve in the Great Karoo region, and at the same time, this forever shifts the predator-prey dynamic in the reserve.

Read more about lions here in this story: The African Lion

Additional reintroductions over the years have included dozens of plains game like red hartebeest, eland and Cape mountain zebra, to name but a few. Incredibly there has also been the natural return of other species, such as the elusive Cape leopard and Cape vultures.

A WELCOME DINNER INTERRUPTION

Now that we’ve covered a bit of the background, it’s back to the evening’s dinner after a long day out with no word from the rangers as to the movements (or lack thereof) of the lions…

We were finishing off our main course when Veronica, the assistant manager, approached the table.

“I have an announcement to make,” she declared with a hint of a smile.

The table quietened down, turning towards her with anticipation

“I have a message from Marnus,” she went on calmly. “He says that the lions have finally left the boma and that you must all head outside as he is waiting to take you to where they are.”

It took us a mere moment to process what she had just said… and then all hell broke loose. Napkins flew into the air, chairs were pushed hastily away, and the room erupted in an energetic frenzy as everyone scrambled to get their cameras and jackets while hot-stepping it to where Marnus was waiting in the vehicle.

Dessert would have to wait!

Soon we were on the road for the short ride to the boma. It was pitch black and slightly chilly, and Marnus drove by the boma’s gate, left open since the morning, surveying the area with a spotlight for any sign of the lions – the gemsbok carcass lay untouched.

Had they really left without feeding? Surely they were hungry? Would they vanish into the night, leaving us equally excited yet disappointed at the same time? Questions and theories to their location flew around in hushed whispers.

Trying to remain positive, we slowly drove around the area, the spotlight dancing across the landscape, creating shadows that had us second-guessing, when suddenly it fell upon a sleek feline figure walking about a hundred or so metres away – everyone gasped – it was Titus! Moving like the ghost of his ancestors, he was silently making his way through the thick acacia trees towards the carcass.

Lion and lioness eating gemsbok

In anticipation, we drove back to the carcass, only to find that Sikelele had returned in the last few minutes and was already tucking into her dinner, unperturbed by our presence.

ABOUT THE KAROO

The Karoo covers almost 40% of South Africa’s land surface and stretches over the provinces of the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, and Western Cape. No exact definition of what constitutes the Karoo is available, so its extent is also not precisely defined.

The Karoo, however, is distinctively divided into the Great Karoo (or Groot Karoo) and the Little Karoo (or Klein Karoo) by the Swartberg Mountain Range area. Both regions lie almost entirely within two of South Africa’s eight botanical biomes: the Nama Karoo and the Succulent Karoo.

The massive Nama Karoo is South Africa’s second-largest biome which extends into southeastern Namibia. It is defined as a vast semi-desert region, and the name is derived from the Khoi San word kuru , meaning ‘dry’. The Succulent Karoo covers the arid western parts of South Africa, including Namaqualand and the Richtersveld, up to the south-west region of Namibia. It is distinguished by its arid or semi-arid climate, allowing for a rich diversity of succulent plants and animals.

ABOUT SAMARA

Samara Karoo Reserve is a family-run, award-winning, malaria-free, Big 5 reserve in the Great Karoo. It is located in the Eastern Cape province, 53 km southeast of Graaff-Reinet – the country’s fourth oldest town. Spanning 70,000 acres of Great Karoo wilderness, Samara offers a Big 5 safari with a difference.

Consisting of 11 former livestock farms assembled since 1997, Samara’s vision is nothing less than the rehabilitation of an entire landscape. Key to the Samara experience is the concept of co-creation, where every guest plays a role in rewilding the landscape and preserving it for posterity. Activities include game drives, guided walks, wilderness picnics, cheetah tracking on foot, aardvark spotting (best sightings to be had in winter), birding, hiking and a luxury star bed (open October to April). Children of all ages are welcome, and there is a Samara Kids Programme that caters to children up to the age of 12 years old.

Thea was graciously hosted at one of the two accommodation options at Samara:

The Karoo Lodge is a restored farmhouse encircled by a natural amphitheatre of mountains. Combining colonial comforts and modern-day luxuries with a rustic and welcoming feel, the Karoo Lodge is the perfect place to relax, either outside by the pool or on the verandah. The lodge has nine, en-suite double rooms of varying sizes and caters for individual travellers, couples and families.

The luxurious Manor House is a modern yet understated villa which reflects the local Karoo landscape and traditions with a unique twist. It comprises four, en-suite luxury suites, which can be booked independently or the entire villa can be taken over on an exclusive-use basis. This option is popular with families and groups looking for privacy, indulgence and complete relaxation.

For those seeking just a bit more privacy and adventure, Samara offers a star bed  – a bedroom on a raised wooden platform. The star bed is some distance from the camp and overlooks the Milk River, where wildlife comes to drink. You will be dropped off at the private star bed in the evening and picked up the following morning. Your stay in the star bed includes a romantic sundowner drink followed by a moon-lit dinner. You will sleep high up and safe from predators and things that go bump in the night.

Your bed is as comfortable as those back in the camp, and a mosquito net protects you from pesky insects. The treehouse has a toilet and hand-basin. Awaken the next morning to the big skies and birdsong of the Karoo as another beautiful day dawns in Africa, before being collected and taken back to the main camp to freshen up. This is a wonderful, romantic and very memorable twist to any safari.

The Tracker Academy

The Tracker Academy , a training division of the SA College for Tourism, operating under the auspices of the Peace Parks Foundation and funded by the Rupert Family Trust, was founded and is hosted at Samara. The one-year full-time intensive course into the dying science of tracking, led by experienced trainers, is the first of its kind in Southern Africa.

Samara makes its land available free of charge to the Tracker Academy for all its semi-arid practical training sessions and as part of its charitable donation to the Academy, also provides lecturing facilities and accommodation for the trainees.

Samara Private Game Reserve is a stylish safari lodge in the heart of a malaria-free area within the Eastern Cape. Gaze out onto a vast landscape extending over 28,000 hectares where Africa’s most iconic creatures are free to roam. Accommodation is spread out between Karoo Lodge and Suites and The Manor. Karoo Lodge consists of a renovated farmstead, sleeping up to 18 clients. Enjoy fantastic facilities including open fireplaces and outdoor verandas. The three Karoo Suite cottages are fully air conditioned and set within their own gardens. The Manor is a large luxury villa with an infinity pool and a good range of scenic outdoor spaces.

Experience a phenomenal range of nature-based actives as you track down elephant, zebra and buffalo. You may also capture spectacular photographs of ferocious predators slinking through the dried vegetation. Game drives are operated regularly while guided walks give you more time to discover all the secrets of landscape.

Karoo Lodge , a lovingly renovated 1800s farmhouse encircled by a natural amphitheatre of mountains. Combining colonial comforts and modern day luxuries with a rustic and welcoming feel, Karoo Lodge is the perfect place to relax and allow the tranquillity of the Karoo to envelop you – on the wide verandah in summer or by the cosy fire in winter. With nine double rooms of varying sizes, Karoo Lodge caters for individual travellers, couples and families. It can also be booked on an exclusive-use basis for up to 18 guests, plus a limited number of extra children.

The luxurious  Manor House , an exclusive-use villa ideal for families and groups looking for privacy, indulgence and complete relaxation, sleeps 8 in four luxury suites. The Manor is unique in its warm design which reflects the local landscape and traditions with a light, modern twist, interpreted through the eyes of talented South African interior designer John Jacob Zwiegelaar. Upon arrival your eye is drawn through the glass double doors flanked by beaded African artwork and traditional Karoo antiques to the breathtaking views beyond. Unwind as you watch the Karoo mountain landscape unfold over a 21m infinity pool.

The first of these, Karoo Lodge, is classically colonial in style, a brick and corrugated iron build, its front porch, stretch veranda and French doors all motifs from another era. Consisting of a main lodge and 6 suites, and set in grounds populated by rehabilitated cheetah, the lodge includes a lounge, dining room, library, pool, spa and bar. Furnished with beautiful antique side tables, slumber seats and, on the veranda, a set of chunky easy chairs, the lodge is comfortable, and smart.

Animal skins, carvings and animal patterns sit cheek to jowl with restrained ceramic pots and glassware, and the design is one that looks to have grown organically; yet retains an overall feel that is at once tasteful and welcoming. Homely, stylish, it sits comfortably with a service that is excellent, discreet, friendly, and with a standard of cuisine that is South African, delicious and caters very much for specific diets.

With room for up to 12 guests, the suites are divided according to location: lodge suites and Karoo suites, the former located in the main building, the latter in the property’s grounds. The Karoo suites, which possess the same verandas and corrugated iron roofs, are that bit more private than those situated in the lodge, and include a lounge area, double bed and en-suite bathroom. Both types – lodge and Karoo – are beautifully decorated, with individual four poster beds complimented by the same eclectic mix of antique, stressed hand-me-down and Lamuesque furniture. The bathrooms – Victoriana claw-foot bath, flush toilet, shower and twin sink – are equally fine.

The second of Samara’s properties, The Manor, is a private home belonging to Mark and Sarah Tompkins, who with the help of John Zwiegelaar (of John Jacob Interiors), built the property on land once owned by Lord Charles Somerset. A beautiful and very private stay, accommodates 8 and includes a lounge, dining room, breakfast room, veranda, pool and 4 suites. The bedrooms are very much like the lodge’s suites, but the shared areas are, as one might suspect, more of a specific style, with less of an Africana influence. The Manor comes with its own ranger, chef and butler. Please note that The Manor is only available at certain times and may be booked on an individual basis, as well as exclusively.

Samara’s third property, Mountain Retreat, sleeps 10, is advertised as perfect for families and large groups. With 3 in-house suites and 2 located nearby in a converted Victorian barn, there’s plenty of room. Cosy, built around a lovely fireplace, the property possesses an extraordinary view, and specialises in being the base from which guests explore the area on foot, wildlife drives being an optional extra.

Food at Samara is served from our  Karoo Kitchen , delivering lovingly-prepared fare rustled up by our local chefs. What truly sets Samara apart is its unbeatable activities. Cheetah viewing and particularly cheetah tracking on foot is one of the reserve’s specialties and is an unforgettable experience. For the ultimate romantic experience you can have a helicopter picnic during the day on the ‘Samara Mara’ followed by a star bed sleep-out at night. Samara also takes conservation very seriously and has the ethos that when guests stay they become part of the ongoing conservation journey through animal re-introductions and the preservation of important habitat. It is one of only 2 private reserves in South Africa to have the desert-adapted black rhino, has recently introduced the elephant, and we are eagerly awaiting the introduction of the lion later in 2018. Your time here will be a holiday with meaning.
