Five Places to Shop in Arusha, Tanzania

For in-the-know locals and travelers alike, the downtown area is a place to linger and shop in a city known as a quick layover to safari destinations.

safari clothes arusha

By Shivani Vora

This sprawling city in the northern tourist region of Tanzania is the gateway to popular safari destinations and Africa’s highest peak, Mt. Kilimanjaro. But even if your stay is a brief stopover, you shouldn’t miss some of the stores that locals enjoy in Arusha’s downtown, an area of mostly low-slung concrete buildings where street vendors hawk everything from local crafts and fruit to children’s toys. These establishments sell goods made exclusively in this East African country and show off a side of Tanzania that’s beyond its prime game viewing.

A social enterprise and destination for design lovers, Shanga sells handicrafts made by Tanzanians with disabilities. These artisans produce an expansive range of goods such as drinking and wine glasses made with recycled colored glass, woven cotton shawls and place mats and decorative metal objects. Prices from $1.

When Arushans want to buy local culinary staples such as peanuts and cashews, honey, dried fruits like bananas and mangoes, and spices like turmeric, chai masala and clove powder, they go to this simple store. On the second floor of a mall, Gohil’s stocks premium versions of these staples at affordable prices. Prices from $1.

Sidai Designs

About 100 Masai women who live in the countryside around Arusha make the fashionable jewelry sold at this airy store. Their works range from delicate to dramatic, but beadwork is a common thread among the pieces — a slender cream bead bracelet was recently for sale, for example, but so was a thick cuff with bright red, blue and green beads. On Tuesday, market day, the women come from the countryside to display their talents on the lawn just outside the boutique. Prices from $15.

Burka Coffee Estates

Just beyond downtown, you can see verdant coffee plantations in the distance. A trip to this lush 1,200 acre coffee farm, built around 1899, is well worth it to learn about the pride Tanzanians take in their high-quality coffee production. Burka grows Arabica beans and produces five blends including its signature bold house variety; and for $35 a person, it’s possible to get a tour of the estate and the roasting facility, as well as a tasting. Prices from $7.

Schwari Collectibles

Beate Allard, a Tanzanian with a Swiss background, sells stylish home goods and clothing out of an airy 1952 bungalow that’s adjacent to her Mediterranean restaurant, The Blue Heron . Expect eye catching wares such as lampshades made of cowhides, beaded candle holders, handwoven table linens and wooden footstools adorned with bright, patterned fabrics. Prices from $3.

Clothing for a safari in Tanzania

If you’re planning a trip to Africa and a safari in Tanzania , you should know that you need to pack the right clothes before leaving .

How to dress for a safari in Tanzania? In this article we’ll reveal everything that you should know about the perfect clothes to pack for this experience

How to dress for a Safari in Tanzania: the recommended clothing

One of the most exciting experiences to plan while organizing a trip to Tanzania is the Safari. Being able to explore nature up close, guided by experts, will give you the opportunity to discover the most authentic secrets of this land that enchants every traveler.

The type of Safari clothing is not designed to take memorable photos, but to ensure comfort, security and practicality during an unforgettable experience.

Among the items that you must pack we find:

  • Lightweight trekking pants : suitable to all seasons, they must keep you cool and ensure you comfort in your movements. Try to go for those in fabrics that dry quickly, so you can manage them better. A plus? The convertible models with zip, which can change from long to short.
  • Comfortable shorts : if you’re going to visit Tanzania in the hottest periods, the best thing to do is to bring some comfortable shorts that can be worn during the safari.
  • T-shirts and long-sleeved shirts : try to go for technical fabrics, suitable for protecting you from the sun, but also able to protect you from sweating excessively. Going for a specific type of safari clothing with fabrics that are able to keep the body temperature stable is certainly a good idea.
  • Windbreaker : even in safaris there’s the rule of dressing like an onion. That is why among the items to pack there should be a windbreaker to protect you from the air and make sure you don’t feel the drops in temperature.
  • Trekking shoes : pay attention to the shoes, we recommend the usage of trekking shoes, but do not bring them as the only pair of shoes, since, if never worn, they could cause pain and blisters. Pack a pair of comfortable, closed and well-structured sneakers.
  • Swimsuit : maybe it may seem strange, but a lot of lodges have a swimming pool and this can allow for a different type of break. It does not take up a lot of space.

Rules for dressing during a Safari

There are very few rules for dressing during a Safari : it is recommended to wear comfortable and covering clothes , preferring light and neutral colors such as brown, sand, beige or gray. For what concerns the clothing, it is suggested to choose lightwear but covering fabrics and great attention is paid to shoes.

As for accessories, a hat and sunglasses are a must . We recommend bringing a small beauty case with sunscreen with protection filters and a repellent that can protect you from insect bite.

To choose the correct outfit, you need to consider the period: a safari in august has maximum temperatures of 27° and low humidity. This means your adventure won’t be excessively hot. While in september the temperatures , especially in the northern parks, are known for going from 15 to 27°

When you get dressed for a safari, you need to keep in mind the type of excursion that you’re facing. Normally, you stay out the entire day, from sunrise to sunset, this leads you to different temperatures during the day and it is important to have everything you need with you in order to being able to protect yourself from wind blows or the sun.

In addition to advice on what to bring, we want to give you some advice on what to avoid : not only dark colors are banned, but also white. These colors seem to be preferred by mosquitoes and tsetse flies. Do not think that short sleeves t-shirts or tank tops are the best option, long sleeves are not unbearable and can help you to protect you from insect bites.

Private Safaris in Tanzania

What to wear on a safari & how to pack, a safari gear list.

Planning what to wear on your upcoming safari in Tanzania is easy. Everything you need is most likely in your closet already! Our clothing suggestions apply for all seasons and regions. In case your region requires specific gear we will inform you accordingly.

HOW TO PACK MY SAFARI GEAR?

For group safaris, we recommend using a duffel bag of a maximum capacity of 90 liters (15-20kg) + and small daypack as hand luggage. As all luggage must be transported inside the safari jeep, please do not overpack. Excess luggage must remain at your accommodation in case that the jeep is full and will be decided by your safari guide. Be respectful to your fellow travelers and reduce your luggage as best as possible.

Suitcases with wheels and hardcover might be damaged during transport and might consume too much space so we recommend avoiding those. They can be kept at your accommodation in Arusha and you can collect them after your safari.

WHAT KIND OF CLOTHES ARE RECOMMENDED ON SAFARI?

Casual, comfortable and easy-to-wash clothes are definitely recommended. The goal is to pack lightly and most lodges and camps will launder clothes for a small fee. Safaris are informal, and there is no need to dress up. Do plan to dress in layers so you can adjust to temperature changes as early morning game drives can be quite cold depending on the time of year while daytime temperatures can get quite hot.

Minimum temperatures (at night): 5-10 degrees °C / 41 °F Maximum temperatures (at daytime): 30-35 degrees °C / 95 °F

Stick to neutral, sand or khaki colors and avoid wearing dark blue or black clothes as these colors tend to attract tsetse flies. Wide brimmed hats , sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent are a necessity. After sunset, we recommend that you wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and socks and spray insect repellent to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.

RECOMMENDED SAFARI CLOTHING*

  • T-shirts and tank tops (quick dry, liner)
  • Long-sleeved shirts (for protection from sunburns)
  • Light long pants or convertible long-short pants
  • Warm fleece pullover or jacket
  • One swimsuit
  • Cotton socks and underwear
  • One pair of comfortable walking shoes
  • One pair of sandals or flip-flops
  • Wide-brimmed hat
  • Bandana (for dust)
  • Heavy sweater, gloves, a scarf if traveling in the cold season (June – August)

We highly recommend that you carry-on all important items such as prescription medication, camera equipment, essential toiletries (please keep in mind that many airlines have liquid restrictions) and one or two changes of clothes in case your luggage arrives late or gets lost at the airport. Tanzania Horizon Safaris cannot be held reliable for any loss, damage or delay of your luggage at the airport as this is subject to the airline.

* all gear can be rented on arrival at our office in Moshi, Kilimanjaro. In case that you are arriving in another region and starting your safari from there, please contact us with enough time in advance.

Please contact us for further information concerning the right gear for your safari.

HOW LONG DOES A SAFARI IN ARUSHA TANZANIA TAKE?

Normally, a visit to Arusha National Park is a one-day trip, providing a compact yet diverse introduction to Tanzanian wildlife.

That being said, the most popular safaris are multi-day experiences, often lasting 3 days or more. These safaris typically include multiple national parks.

BEST TIME TO VISIT ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK?

The best time for wildlife viewing in Arusha National Park is during the dry season, from late June to October.

During these months, animals are easier to spot as they gather around water sources. The vegetation is also thinner, which means it’s easier to see the animals and take photos.

The weather during this period is typically better, with average daytime temperatures around 21°C (70°F), dropping to around 9°C (48°F) at night.

MY EXPERIENCE ON THE ARUSHA SAFARI

After our Kilimanjaro trek , we were transferred by the Altezza Travel crew to Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge located just outside of Arusha National Park.

We spent one night here, and at around 7:30 am the morning after, our safari guide arrived at the hotel.

From the lodge, we began our journey to the entrance gate at Arusha National Park, a short 30-minute drive.

Arusha National Park

The first activity was a 1.5-hour walking safari with a guide and armed ranger around a section of the park.

We spotted countless wildlife such as warthogs, buffaloes, baboons, and giraffes to name a few, then we continued to check out the beautiful Tululusia Waterfall.

Arusha National Park 4

After the walking safari, we drove around the stunning Momella Lakes filled with pink flamingos, and then stopped for lunch at a picnic site overlooking Mount Meru.

We continued our Arusha National Park safari with a 2-hour game drive, spotting many more animal species and seeing some of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve seen in Africa.

The best chance of seeing the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti is during June and July and the time to see the wildebeest calving is late January to February. Tanzania’s main rainy season, or the ‘long rains’, last during about March, April, and May.

Moshi and Arusha are both well-known towns in northern Tanzania, and each has its unique characteristics and attractions:

You can visit Chaga villages, interact with residents, and learn about their customs, traditions, and way of life. Arusha: Safari Hub: Arusha is often referred to as the "Safari Capital of the World" because it serves as a major starting point for safaris in northern Tanzania. It's the gateway to renowned national parks like Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire. Cultural Diversity: Arusha is known for its cultural diversity and is home to various ethnic groups. You can explore the city's vibrant markets, taste a variety of local foods, and experience the rich tapestry of cultures that call Arusha home. Planning Your Safari Trip

-ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK, TARANGIRE, SERENGETI , NGORONGORO & LAKE MANYARA

When planning your safari trip, consider the following:

  • Location : The Northern Circuit is a popular choice for first-time safari-goers, as it includes some of Africa’s most iconic parks and reserves, such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Some people will book their hotel in Moshi and book the safari which starts in the morning (no matter which national park you will start with). It’s much easier to book a hotel in Arusha as here your will be much closer to the National Parks and, not far away from the airport ( Kilimanjaro airport or Arusha airport ). With this you will be saving 2 hours or so, as it takes anywhere from 2-3hours to travel from Moshi to Arusha . If your planning a private ( luxury flying safari ) this shouldn’t be a problem as the next morning your will be driving to your airstrip off to your first National Park.
  • Duration : The length of your safari trip depends on your budget and availability. As safaris can be expensive, consider using a different approach when booking to cut costs. Keep in mind that the more time you spend inside the national park, the closer or higher chance you a close to see something rare, special and you will see a lot of animals even the rare once. Duration will depend on your time as if you have limited time then your forced to visit few national parks than you should. If you are looking on itinerary ideas we have few suggestions that you can pick through our Tanzania safari itineraries guide .
  • Budget : Safaris can be expensive, so it’s important to set a budget and stick to it. Consider using a local tour operator to save money. Most efficient way to cut of the safari prices is by join a group. In this way you will be sharing you safari cost with the group. Most of tour operators are providing (or should be providing) all the basic needed for your safari trip including tents, mattress, sleeping bags all should include the price that they offer. As there is big competition in the market, the price range can vary greatly and you may find options significantly cheaper but be careful to fall into this trap. It all comes down to the service you will receive at the end of the day. So if you pay way less, prepare yourself not to complain if your trip will be ruined later on. As this might be your one time life experience, be sure not to ruin your experience and go with the professionals. As Junior Jackson would tell his guests that it’s 1000 times worth having a good experience and ensuring great memories, than saving a few dollars for a cheap, yet bad experience. The story of your safari gets better and more unique as you witness all things new and exciting. With the boost of that traveler feeling, your story will be one of the best stories to tell your family and friends. If your traveling alone (particularly for females) you will not be sharing tents with those you dont know. We have a long term experience with arranging both groups joining and private safari. Whichever type of Safari you choose, we can arrange this;  budget safari , mid-range or luxury safari . The most popular safari itineraries  with joining groups are the  3 days safari (Serengeti & Ngorongoro)  or 4 days safari (Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro)  The price to join our group safari is set, all inclusive, is affordable and you can be assured good quality service. If you will like to save the extra expenses and go an even cheaper option, you can skip the Serengeti National park as this park is one of the most expensive national park and join a group that goes on tour for still 3 days but you won’t visit the Serengeti. You will go on  3 days safari (Tarangire, Lake Manyara & Ngorongoro)

Must-Visit Parks and Reserves

The Northern Circuit includes several must-visit parks and reserves, such as:

  • Serengeti National Park : This park is a must-see for anyone wanting to go on safari. It is home to the famous wildebeest migration and offers incredible wildlife viewing opportunities
  • Ngorongoro Conservation Area : This area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to the Ngorongoro Crater, which is the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera
  • Tarangire National Park : This park is known for its large elephant herds and baobab trees
  • Lake Manyara National Park : This park is known for its tree-climbing lions and flamingos

Tips for a Successful Safari

To make the most of your safari, consider the following tips:.

Choose the right time : The best time to visit the Northern Circuit is during the dry season, from June to October, when wildlife is easier to spot. In summary, the dry season is generally considered the best time for safaris in Tanzania and Kenya due to favorable weather conditions and optimal wildlife viewing. However, the wet season and shoulder seasons can also offer unique experiences and opportunities for those who prefer fewer crowds and are interested in birdwatching or lower costs. Your choice should be based on your specific interests and priorities. if you want to learn more about this, all information can be found on Celebrate the Circle of Life: Best Seasons for Safari Adventures in Tanzania and Kenya

Pack appropriately : Bring comfortable and breathable clothing, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a camera with extra batteries and memory cards

Respect the wildlife : Keep a safe distance from the animals and follow the instructions of your guide

Support local communities : Consider buying souvenirs from local vendors and supporting local businesses

Arusha National Park – The Ultimate Safari Guide

Split Top with Sidebar

Snug between Kilimanjaro  and  Mount Meru , Arusha National Park is one of the lesser-known safari destinations in Tanzania. It boasts densely wooded forests and secluded lakes, offering wildlife safaris, iconic hiking trails and more.

The park’s landscape is dominated by the towering Mount Meru, a near-perfect volcanic cone with a deep and impressive crater. Sheltered by the mountain is the Ngurdoto Crater, whose densely wooded slopes are home to a range of exotic forest birds and the extremely rare colobus monkeys.

Whenever I visit Kilimanjaro, I always make a point of descending into picturesque Arusha and basking in the rich environment, history and culture of this iconic wildlife park. It may not harbour as much wildlife activity as the other northern parks, but what it lacks in animals it makes up for in breathtaking vistas and exhilarating hiking and outdoor opportunities.

In this article, I'll give you my best insights into Arusha's rich history, best times to visit Arusha, the costs of an Arusha safari, how to get to Arusha, budget and luxury accommodation in and around Arusha, the abundant wildlife in Arusha and other scenic spots you can explore around Arusha.

Let's get started!

Which tour? Here are 5 Arusha safari tours I highly recommend:

  • Arusha National Park Day Safari (1 day)
  • Budget Big Five Safari (incl. Arusha)  (4 days)
  • 5 Days of Tanzania Safari  (5 days)
  • Northern Tanzania Camping Safari (7 days)
  • Serengeti Trail (incl. Arusha)  (8 days)

Arusha National Park FAQs

Before we descend into the Arusha National Park FAQs, why not try orienting yourself first with our dynamic map of Tanzania below? As you'll see, Arusha forms part of Tanzania’s Northern Circuit national parks consisting of the Ngorongoro Crater ,  Lake Manyara ,  Tarangire  and the  Serengeti .

Tanzania safari map by Mountain IQ

Arusha National Park is part of the Northern Circuit and offers a unique wildlife safari experience for visitors.

Why is Arusha called 'The Geneva of Africa'?

The town of Arusha is called 'The Geneva of Africa' because it is the launchpad for safari-goers visiting Tanzania. The bustling metropolis of Arusha is one of the fastest-growing cities in Tanzania and the epitome of African urban living. Arusha is in stark contrast to the untamed natural wilderness beyond the city’s borders.

Arusha is also close to other iconic destinations, such as Ngorongoro, Serengeti and Karatu, which are at most a two-hour journey from the town. Arusha National Park lies 32km east of the eponymous town and covers only 552 square kilometres.

Even if you don't end up doing a safari tour, visiting illustrious Arusha will be an unforgettable experience.

When is the best time to visit Arusha National Park?

Dry season (june-october):.

The best time to visit Arusha National Park is during the dry season between  June and October . The vegetation is thinner and water is scarcer, which makes it easier to spot animals. Another perk is fewer mosquitoes is the dry months and ultimately a reduced chance of catching malaria.

Arusha enjoys a temperate climate due to its proximity to the base of Mount Meru and its altitude of about 1300m. The Park is generally lush and green all year round and is comprised of a large forest section, even the rainy season can make for successful safaris.

Wet season (November-May):

There are two rainy seasons in Arusha National Park. The season of ‘short rains’ is between  November and December  with sporadic showers generally clearing up quite quickly. The wet season of  March to May  brings long, rainy days and outdoor activities and safaris offer slim pickings. Most lodges also close their doors during this season.

The scenery is most spectacular during the wet season and many lodges offer low-season rates , which make the accommodation more affordable.

How much does an Arusha National Park safari cost?

Arusha safaris cost about $300 per person for a budget Tanzania safari to $950 per person for a luxury Tanzania safari . Tourists also have the option of selecting a Tanzania camping safari for their visits to Arusha National Park. It is relatively small, so most tourists usually spend 1-2 days in this national park. Also, tours are often combined with other popular tourist destinations in the area like Mount Meru, Mount Kilimanjaro, and the other Northern Circuit national parks (Serengeti, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro).

Arusha is a spectacular safari park waiting to be discovered. Safaris along the plains offer up sightings of Cape buffalo, various antelope and the occasional elephant, rhino, and leopard – if you’re lucky! Adding to the park’s allure is the opportunity to experience mountain biking, canoeing and walking safaris.

How do I get to Arusha National Park?

The best way to get to Arusha National Park is to fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (60km east of Arusha), the main port of entry for visitors entering northern Tanzania. From the airport, it is a quick bus ride into Arusha town or directly to the park.

Alternatively, there is a small domestic airport in the west of Arusha itself which tourists can use for their travels.

What accommodation is there in or near Arusha National Park?

There are lots of accommodation options in and near Arusha National Park.

Africa’s ‘Safari Capital’ is home to some of the  best hotels and lodges in Tanzania . With Arusha National Park being so close it makes sense for most park visitors to stay in the town rather than in the Park where accommodation is scarce.

Where to stay? Here are 5 of my favourite accommodation options close to Arusha National Park:

  • Four Points by Sheraton (The Arusha Hotel)
  • Africa Lodge (Arusha)
  • Mount Meru Hotel
  • Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge
  • Lake Duluti Lodge

See more  Arusha accommodation options .

The most famous of the city’s lodgings is the Arusha Hotel. Frequently visited by John Wayne in the 1960s during the shooting of ‘Hatari’, guests will feel like they have been transported back in time when they visit the hotel’s famous bar.

Mount Meru Game Lodge and Wildlife Sanctuary is a retreat for discerning admirers of wildlife and nature. The sanctuary was created as a home for injured and orphaned animals, and the lodge provides a magnificent backdrop to the surrounding wildlife.

Other lodges set around the town of Arusha offering unique and memorable stays include Arusha Coffee Lodge, Arusha Safari Lodge, Kigongoni Lodge and Lake Duluti Serena Hotel. Africa Safari Lake Natron offers camping and caravan options just outside the park and has exquisite semi-permanent tents.

Hatari Lodge is one of just a handful of lodges inside the National Park’s perimeters. This classy establishment offers nine rooms situated in the acacia woodland. Views of Mount Meru can be enjoyed from the terraces of the main building. Guests can also enjoy highly professional game drives and walks.

What other scenic spots can I visit near Arusha National Park?

Lucky for you, there are many scenic spots you can visit that are close to Arusha National Park.

If safaris aren't your thing, you can always try out excellent hiking trails through the park and head out towards Mount Meru and do some birdwatching at the Momella Lakes.

Mount Meru tops out at 4556m, making it the fifth-highest peak in Africa and second highest in Tanzania. Being so closely located to Mount Kilimanjaro it can be an excellent choice for climbers trying to acclimatize before attempting one of the world’s Seven Summits.

The first ascent of Mount Meru is still a hotly contested topic and is widely thought to have been undertaken and achieved by either Carl Uhlig in 1901 or Fritz Jaeger in 1904. It is not to be confused with Mount Meru in the Himalayas, which was the site of the 2015 movie ‘Meru’.

Mt-Meru

Here are a few important things to note about Mount Meru:

  • Its formation
  • Challenges of the climb

Adding to the mountain’s allure is the fact that it is still an active volcano. The mountain burst into life with its first explosion around 500,000 years ago. That explosion blew apart half of the mountain and the eastern rim was shattered. This left behind the distinctive 5 km wide breached caldera. The most recent eruption was in 1910 but it now stands dormant.

An additional summit, Ash Cone, was formed during the eruption in 1910 and is worth exploring. After drinking in the unparalleled views at the summit, most hikers will make their way all the way back down to the Meriakamba Hut or right back to the gate.

climb-mount-meru

There is only one route up the mountain – the Momella Route. Starting at the Momella Gate, the first portion of the hike passes through plains and forests filled with waterfalls and wildlife. There are two huts along the route up to the summit:

  • Meriakamba Hut is roughly a five to six hour walk from the gate and is an ideal place to spend the first night on the mountain.
  • Saddle Hut is the second hut and is normally used for lodgings on the second night.

On the final day of the hike, climbers will negotiate their way past Rhino and Cobra Point, relishing views of the Tanzanian highlands as the rising sun gently illuminates the plains below. The last part of the hike traverses the narrow crater rim path – an exhilarating section, especially when the summit is capped in snow.

The view from the summit is breathtaking with a 1500m drop down a sheer cliff to the crater floor on one side, and the vast plains of Tanzania stretching out on the other.

Meru is a challenging climb in its own right and although no technical climbing gear is needed, it is high enough to bring upon the effects of altitude sickness. Most journeys to the summit take three to four days with a guide and usually porters. An armed ranger accompanies hiking parties through the entire expedition to alleviate the threat of wild animal attacks.

Momella Lakes

Momella Lakes offer an enjoyable change of pace to the usually dry and arid Tanzanian landscape. The tranquil waters can be explored with canoe while taking in the stunning views of Mt Kilimanjaro 70km to the west, with its snow-capped peak.

The forest trails in the Ngurduto Crater offer 50 kilometres of footpaths winding their way through the belly of the jungle. The beautiful network of trails leads hikers to the top of the crater rim where the panoramic views of the forest and plains below are simply spectacular.

What animals can I see in Arusha National Park?

Despite being relatively small, you can still see animals in and around Arusha National Park. Of these animals, monkeys and flamingos are notable features of this unique African habitat.

Monkey Population  in Arusha National Park

A highlight of the park for many is the chance to spot the black and white colobus monkeys performing their acrobatics high up in the canopies that decorate the Ngurduto crater’s edge. Walk through the forest and listen as the eerie calls of the monkeys reverberate through the trees.

Colombus-monkey

Colombus monkey

Blue monkeys or diademed monkeys have also prized sightings in Arusha. Part of the ‘old world monkeys’ family, these natives of central and east Africa are a rare find.

Pink Flamingos in Momella Lakes

Arusha-National-Park-Flamingos

Momella Lakes is special because of its unique aquatic wildlife and habitats as well as its diverse footpaths for hiking through picturesque forests to the Ngurduto Crater.

A variety of water birds – the majestic pink colonies of flamingoes being a particular favourite - can be found in the forest areas.

safari clothes arusha

I am mainly living out of a backpack and looking for reasonably hardwearing, quick drying all weather kind of clothing. Looking at other forums many people say not to bother with the safari gear because it is really overpriced and unnecessary.

Does anyone know any shops (online or high street) that will stock the sort of clohting that I will need? I am mainly doing a lot of walking and safari in Tanzania and Namibia adn the diving in Mozambique (where I will probably wear more normal clothing)

' class=

I just traveled for a month with 3 outfits, as did Idiot She. She carries gauzy, lineny things that dry overnight. I carry camping nylon kind of stuff. I typically rinse out a shirt every night - under good conditions they take about 4-6 hours to dry. I did two the night before we left and actually had a clean shirt to change into at the airport in Amsterdam.

We've had good luck with this place that specializes in deeply discounting camping gear... most of it is first quality, but remaindered... some seconds as well... great prices, lots of coupons and deals..

http://www.sierratradingpost.com/

here's an example... high-tech wicking for cool and dry, 30 UPF sun protection, etc... - and we usually have coupons that drop the prices significantly from the regular listed...

It also depends on where you are staying or how long. I found that most clothing, especially socks and underwear do not dry overnight. If you are a location for more than one night, it helps with the drying. If you stay at lodges, you can get laundry done , but again, usually not for the next day.

We just returned. Ex Officio makes travel clothing that IMHO is spectacular. I had one of their safari shirts, which are long sleeve but roll up as well as a pair of their convertible pants (long pants that zip off to make shorts). The shirt has many pockets, has a mesh area under the arms for ventilation, weighs almost nothing, and dries quickly. The pants are great. I also purchased a similar set from a well known US outdoor type store and they were lousy. Ex Officio also makes undergarments that can be rinsed and dry within 2 hours.

safari clothes arusha

OP, I just went this route, looking for light-weight quick-dry travel clothes that I could wear anywhere. Not much where I live so I resorted to the online (Sierra Trading Post, Ex Officio, Columbia) i usually do not buy clothes online as they are hard to fit. well, I am now about $35 poorer and have NO clothes from the endeavor. long story short, got all the stuff on sale, but not free shipping (or return) and yes, looked for coupons, etc.

nothing fit right (heck nothing FIT) and ended up returning it all, and paying for shipping in both directions. I even called Sierra and pleaded my case, they could not have cared less.

Bottom line, unless you have ordered clothes online before and are fairly certain they will work for you, I'd try local shops. Mr S was able to find a couple of things, but unfortunately, nothing for women.

Without a doubt, the best clothing range I've found is from ROHAN. They also do excellent mail order.

Their clothing ranges are designed for all climates, and with travel in mind. It is ALL made with weight restrictions and ease of washing in mind.

Sorry to sound like an advert, but it really is that good. Not cheap, but they also have regular sales. And, as it dries overnight, you don't need 7 of everything. I recently spent 2 months in a cold and damp climate (England), with hand luggage comprising mostly of Rohan. Apart from maybe the fleece and windproof jacket, I would take the same stuff to Africa.

Yeh, a UK equivalent to REI and MEC. I figured some one would know one. Thanks Peter....and Claire - they have shops not far from you, so you can try them on and hope for some sales.

I'm one of those who shops in her closet, cotton pants/shirts/t-shirts.

Simple mocassins for the feet (no boors or sneakers)

Paper underwear as locally these aren't laundered most everywhere - this way 'wear/oss'

A Fleece/jumper/sweater - for cool/cold mornings and nights.

For other ideas, lots of threads good for a search on options and additional items.

Lots of good catalogues in UK (I am told by my buyer.)

Landsend, Country Casuals. Millets.

Take cotton and wash them out overnight. 3 of everything. Just like IAB except I don't change that often as it deters the Tsetse by day and annoying companions at Dinner.

We buy Craghoppers when they have their sale. The Nosilife range is quick drying, half an hour in a breeze, they do socks and underwear if you should so wish. Zip off trousers, nice shirts , T shirts etc etc. this year will be our 4 th safari with the same core set of clothes and we use it for other holidays as it's also quite smart! The Nosilife does help with insect problems but it's the quick wash/ dry we find really convenient. C

6 Fabulous Things To Do In Arusha, Tanzania Before Your Safari

safari clothes arusha

  • Activities and Interests
  • Destinations
  • Outdoor Activities

Visitors from around the world arrive in Arusha, Tanzania, and quickly head out on their safaris. With an international airport and a wide range of accommodations, it’s the perfect place for weary travelers to rest for a night before venturing to the Serengeti and other national parks.

However, Arusha is so much more than a launching point for safaris. It’s a bustling city filled with vibrant markets, art galleries, cafés, and restaurants. Drive through the city streets and you’ll see brightly colored bajaj moto-taxis, Maasai men wrapped in plaid shukas, and vendors pushing their wares through the streets in wooden carts.

Before departing for my seven-day safari, I decided to add an extra day in Arusha to explore all that it has to offer. Not only did I find ample souvenir shopping opportunities, but I also had a glimpse of local life in Tanzania.

1. Swahili Art Group Studio And Gallery

Set in a public park, the Swahili Art Group is an outdoor studio and gallery. Founded by Elishy, a young man with both a talent and passion for painting, the group is made up of formerly impoverished young men and women. Through Zoe Empowers , these young people have learned to generate income and care for themselves and their families. They are no longer desperately poor, but instead are thriving. Now they sell their art to well-off tourists looking for a souvenir with special meaning. They also give back to the community through art classes for young children.

I had the chance to visit the studio and watch several artists at work. Elishy explained how they had built themselves a studio out of recycled plastic soda bottles. The studio is stocked with canvases, paint supplies, and long, round packing tubes ready to hold recent purchases.

Paintings of all sizes are displayed along a park path, many depicting the animals that visitors will see on safari. In addition to paintings, the group has also crafted notecards.

Pro Tip: If you can’t make it to Arusha, the Swahili Art Group sells some of their art on Etsy .

Arusha's state of the art Cultural Heritage Center

2. Cultural Heritage Center

Among the best-known tourist destinations in Arusha is the Cultural Heritage Center, a vast property filled with larger-than-life sculptures that sells handicrafts and fine art.

Most guests are dropped off in front of the building selling Tanzanian-made items, so this was where I began my visit. At the entrance are demonstrations of local music and artwork. Inside, items sold range from small key chains to sculptures, jewelry, baskets, and clothing. At the back is a small shop selling Tanzanite, a blue gemstone found only in the Northern region of the country.

Unlike some of the markets in town where these items might be purchased for less money after negotiating, haggling is not permitted here — everything is sold for the price marked. English-speaking staff is plentiful, making it easy to inquire about the items or request assistance.

Pro Tip: The Cultural Heritage Center is located on a large property and it can take a couple of hours to explore it all. If you get hungry or thirsty — or just need a caffeine boost — there is both a café and a sit-down restaurant on site.

One Of The Largest Art Galleries In Africa

After stocking up on a few souvenirs, I strolled across the grounds of the Cultural Heritage Center to the imposing building that houses fine art. Designed by the owner and inspired by a drum, shield, and spear, this certainly is one of the most unique gallery settings I’ve ever seen.

Spread among several levels is an impressive collection of photography, sculpture, paintings, masks, and textiles from all over Africa. While everything here is for sale, it felt more like a museum since many of the pieces included bios of the artists as well as information on the genre of art.

On the first level, you’ll see the largest piece of ebony art in the world. It depicts an old Maasai (one of Tanzania’s tribes) tradition of a young male warrior killing a lion to prove his manhood so he could subsequently be married. These massive sculptures can take years, and even decades, to complete.

3. Arusha Coffee Lodge

Whether or not you stay at the Arusha Coffee Lodge , you’ll want to pop in for a meal here. As the name suggests, the resort is set amidst a coffee plantation on the edge of town. Their restaurant can be found in an expansive garden with tables set on wooden platforms and protected from the sun by large umbrellas.

Complimenting the lovely setting is delicious food served family style. I ordered their vegetarian lunch, which included a variety of salads and bread. Dessert is included, which on the day I visited, was a refreshing mango passionfruit sorbet.

Coffee beans drying at an Arusha coffee plantation

4. Coffee Plantation Tour

While you’re visiting Arusha Coffee Lodge, take advantage of their coffee plantation tours, especially if you’re a coffee lover like I am.

My one-hour tour began with my guide, Anuary, walking me through the coffee plants and sharing the history of coffee. Then he explained how coffee is planted, cultivated, and harvested. Finally, we returned to the nearby coffee shop where he roasted beans and finally brewed a pot of coffee using a French press. After a lifetime of drinking coffee, it was so much fun to learn all about it.

The tours are not regularly scheduled. Check in with the concierge to request a tour.

Pro Tip: The coffee throughout Tanzania is seriously good and makes a great souvenir for fellow coffee lovers. I brought some home for my parents and they already want to know how to get more.

5. Shanga (An Opportunity To Support Disabled Artisans)

Also on the grounds of the Arusha Coffee Lodge is a social enterprise called Shanga . Men and women with disabilities receive training to make jewelry, glass, and textiles, which are in turn sold in their shops. A free tour is offered to visitors through the weaving, crafting, and glass-blowing studios.

I began in the weaving area where a young woman demonstrated how she makes fabric on a loom. Then I was led to the jewelry area and had the chance to string beads to make myself a colorful bracelet. Next, I watched as two men demonstrated glass blowing. Even the gift bags used in the shop are made here of recycled newspaper.

I was impressed by the Shanga shop, which is bright and beautifully styled. The prices were quite reasonable. I went home with two necklaces, one for me and one for my sister. I wanted to buy much more, but the size of my suitcase is always a limitation.

The Maasai women of Arusha

6. Sidai Designs Jewelry

The presence of the Maasai tribe is felt everywhere in Tanzania. Brightly colored beaded jewelry made by Maasai women is a staple at every market. However, with much of the jewelry looking identical, visitors haggle for the lowest possible price and don’t appreciate the craftsmanship.

Sidai Designs set out to change this narrative by combining the skills of Maasai women with contemporary colors and materials popular with consumers. Instead of multi-colored plastic beads, the Sidai jewelry is made with glass beads in neutral tones. The designs honor traditional patterns marking important life events. Five Maasai women are employed full time and over one hundred are paid by the piece and work as their schedules permit.

The jewelry is attractively displayed in a stylish boutique in Arusha. Portraits of the Maasai women employed in the business hang on the wall along with their life stories. Sales staff are well versed in the shop’s history as well as the jewelry-making process and materials. Purchases are wrapped in handmade cloth bags that are perfect for gift-giving.

Pro Tip: Sidai Designs is not yet on the radar of drivers and tour guides. If you plan to visit, be sure to share the address of the shop with them. Also, if you can’t make it to Arusha, feel free to shop online instead — they ship all over the world.

City view of Arusha

Tips For Exploring Arusha

To explore the town of Arusha, I hired a driver for several hours. This can be arranged through your safari company or with the help of the front desk at your hotel. My driver, Franklin, waited for me at each stop and I was allowed to stay as long or as little as I liked. In between the different stops, Franklin pointed out some of the other sights in town including government buildings, churches, and markets. He also gave me a bit of Tanzania’s history and a brief rundown of the country’s politics.

Half-day tours of Arusha are also available online through companies like Viator or GetYourGuide. These tours include some, but not all, of the places I’ve mentioned.

Be sure to have plenty of cash while visiting the different shops. The larger places do accept credit cards, but the smaller ones do not. It’s also nice to have cash available for tipping.
