How Do I Get from Porto to the Douro Valley?

These amazing wine tours from Porto are some of the most popular in the region

When it comes to getting from Porto to the Douro Valley, you have several options. As you probably guessed owing to the valley’s superb location on the Douro River, you can take a boat trip if you wish!

This is easily the most scenic of the following routes since you’ll be surrounded by local villages, lush green mountainsides, and seemingly endless wine vineyards everywhere you look.

The majority of river cruises to the Douro Valley take around 6 hours and depart from the Vila Nova de Gaia’s Quay in Porto and vary in pricing. Some include meals and free wine, whereas some are simply means of transportation.

✔️ By Train

If you prefer to get to the Douro Valley on your own, you have the option of taking the train directly from Porto. This is also one of the most scenic methods as the tracks travel right along the Douro River!

This method takes around 2 hours from Porto’s Campanha Station and is both a scenic and efficient way of getting from Porto to the Douro Valley.

For an in-depth look at the train ride from Lisbon to Porto, read up on the article: Lisbon to Porto Train: Everything You Need to Know

If you wish to reach the Douro Valley by bus from Porto, you’ll need to get your tickets at the Campo 24 de Agosto Station. The journey lasts about 2 hours and is a bit less scenic and less comfortable than the previous two options.

It is usually the cheapest option of getting from Porto to Douro Valley, however.

If you wish to drive yourself or hire a private driver to get you from Porto to the Douro Valley, then a rental car is likely in your future.

This is going to be the most expensive of your options (though the river cruise may be more expensive), but it will get you to Douro Valley in the shortest amount of time in just 1 hour and 15 minutes.

It also provides you the most flexibility since you’ll be on your own schedule and you’ll have more opportunities to stop for pictures along the drive.

You will need to pay attention to toll roads, however, so be sure to carry both cash and credit card on you along the journey.

Things to Know Before Taking a Wine Tour from Porto

wine tours from porto

If you’re thinking of picking one of the below wine tours from Porto, that’s awesome! They’re going to provide you with some amazing memories and really cool experiences in Portugal’s best wineries and terraced vineyards.

But, before you go… there are a few things I should note:

✔️ If you don’t like wine… that’s okay!

Of course, everyone around you will be tasting wine, but if you simply want to join a tour to learn more about wine and get a chance to explore a beautiful region with a local, you can definitely do that.

✔️ You have SO many options

If you don’t want to spend an entire day in the wineries and vineyards, you can opt for a half-day or even just a couple of hours doing some wine tastings at a single vineyard. There really is something for everyone.

✔️ The Douro Valley is the cream of the crop

There are plenty of amazing wine tours from Porto, but we mostly recommend the ones that bring you to the coveted Douro Valley.

There’s a reason that this region lures in wine connoisseurs from around the globe, so we suggest that if you really enjoy wine, get yourself to the Douro Valley pronto!

✔️ You don’t need to be rich to go on a luxurious wine tour from Porto!

We cover this more below, but you can find great tours for much less than you might expect.

Tours that include meals will naturally be more expensive than the ones that don’t, so pick a tour that is best for you and your budget. You can always bring your own lunch and just opt for the fantastic wine tastings!

The Best Season to Experience Wine Tastings and Tours in Porto & Douro

The harvest season of September through October is the best time to take one of these wine tours from Porto

Portugal is known for its comfortable temperatures year-round with just a few outlier days in the summers and winters. This makes it possible to enjoy wine tours and visits to vineyards whenever you plan on visiting Portugal.

However, we have found that the best season to visit Porto and the Douro Valley for wine tours is during the harvest season . This is when the vineyards are overflowing with plump grapes and the foliage just started along the Douro River.

The harvest season months typically fall between September and October , but the season may begin earlier or later depending on how hot and dry the summer months were.

This is also when you’ll get to experience the vineyards with fewer tourists since school has started and most summer breaks are over.

If you have the option of joining one of the below wine tours from Porto in the fall months, do it! You may be able to save a considerable amount on tours in the off-season.

What to Bring With You on a Wine Tour from Porto

wine tours from porto

I’m suuuper guilty of packing things that I never end up using on my travels (I’m working on it…), but I don’t want the same for you.

It’s always difficult to know what you should bring when you’re going on a guided tour, especially if there is no designated “packing list”, so I’ve rounded up just a few items that you’ll be happy to have with you on your wine tour from Porto.

First, a reusable water bottle with a filter . You’re going to be drinking a solid amount of wine, so staying hydrated will help keep you standing and will help curb your hangover the next day. Both are very important…

I like this one since it has a 2-step filtering process and if I’m not super comfortable drinking the tap water, I can just drink it through this bottle and not have to worry.

I’ve brought this same bottle to 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd , and even 4 th world countries (yes, there is such as thing as a 4th world country!) and I’ve never gotten sick from the water that came through this bottle.

✔️ Just to note … I was filling up this bottle in hotel rooms, bathroom faucets, airport taps, and so forth. It also saved me a lot of money from buying bottled water!

Second, a good camera . The Douro Valley is one of the most beautiful regions in not only Portugal or Europe, but the world. You’re going to witness breathtaking vistas that you’ll surely want some high-quality pictures of.

If you’re using your phone as your primary camera, I also suggest bringing along a spare battery pack if your phone is prone to dying quickly.

Third, sunblock and a hat . Even if you’re visiting during the harvest season, you may be walking through very open fields with no shade cover on a very sunny day in Portugal.

Your best bet is to only bring a little day pack with you. Something that is just large enough to carry your water bottle, the sunblock, your battery pack and charger, and maybe a sweater if the temperature starts to drop.

This backpack is my favorite ! It comes in a multitude of colors, is super affordable, and is very durable and water-resistant. I bring it everywhere I travel!

That’s it! You really won’t need much else. Some spare euros would also be good to tip the guides after the tour.

What to Expect on Your Wine Tour from Porto

On these wine tours from Porto, you can expect to taste numerous types of wines and be surrounded by beautiful scenery

Depending on which of the wine tours from Porto you take, you’ll generally have a good idea of what to expect right after you book.

The tours I have listed below go in-depth on safety and health practices (especially important during Covid-19), whether your tour will have a private guide, where you’ll be picked up and dropped off, the types of wines you’ll be tasting, the vineyards and wineries you’ll be visiting, if meals are included, and so forth.

We only recommend reputable tours that go above and beyond to ensure you have a truly enjoyable experience, and that are fully transparent with what is and is not included.

This way, you can be confident that you’ll know what to expect on your wine tour and you can ensure yourself a pleasant experience.

Porto’s Best Wineries and Vineyard

wine tours from porto

If you’re looking to escape to some amazing vineyards just outside of Porto, well, I can’t tell you to skip the Douro Valley. Some of the continent’s best wines originate here, so you really shouldn’t skip it if you really love your wine…

That being said, there are some beautiful wineries and vineyards just outside of Porto if you find yourself short on time or unable to reach the Douro Valley!

Douro Valley Wine vs. Port Wine

On these wine tours from Porto, you'll get to taste both Port wine and Douro Valley wine

You’re probably wondering… “is there a difference between Port wine and Douro Valley wine?” and the answer is a little bit confusing, but I’m here to help!

Port wines are fortified which means they have a higher alcohol content in comparison to regular wines. The Douro Valley primarily produces Port wines, so you’ll be primarily (if not exclusively) sampling Port wines on any of the above wine tours from Porto.

An average glass of wine typically runs at about 12-15% alcohol, whereas a glass of Port wine will come in around 18-20% alcohol. Needless to say, you won’t need to drink as much wine in Porto to catch a buzz as you would elsewhere.

The name “Port wine” comes from the name of the city: Porto! Port wine, or Porto wine, originates in this region of Portugal and can actually only be legally produced in the Douro Valley.

So, if you take one of the wine tours from Porto that I mentioned, you can guarantee that you’ll be tasting something that you can’t try anywhere else in the world!

Thus, the terms Port wine and Douro Valley wine are practically interchangeable, however, there is a small chance that you may find some other wines in the Douro Valley that are not Port wines.

Where to Stay in Porto

wine tours from porto

When it comes to visiting Portugal’s most popular port city, you have several options for choosing where to stay.

Porto’s most popular neighborhoods include Ribeira , Baixa , SĂŁo Bento , and ClĂŠrigos . This is where you’ll find the popular streets such as the popular Avenida dos Aliados and many restaurants, cafes, bars, and the majority of the city’s nightlife.

ClĂŠrigos is Porto’s art district, so if you’re in search of more quiet evenings nearby museums, art exhibits, and galleries, this is a great spot to rest your head for the night!

These neighborhoods are among the best places to stay in Porto since you’ll be nearby public transportation, be close to scenic overlooks, only be a moment’s walk from a restaurant or bar, and you’ll be within walking distance to the city’s most iconic landmarks!

  • Duration: 9.5 Hours

  • Departure Time: 8:30 AM
  • Includes:  Transportation and professional tour guide, small group up to 8 people, visit to 2 wineries, traditional lunch, 1-hour river cruise on traditional boat

This was the first wine tour I went on in Portugal, and it impressed me so much I felt that it deserved to be first on this comprehensive guide.

The Authentic Douro Wine Tour Including Lunch and River Cruise  felt like I was living in some type of fairytale, where time didn’t exist and all stress melted away. Of course, I’m sure the delicious wine helped a bit with that!

Okay, so this tour is a full-day experience starting out at 8:30 am, so we had all day long to enjoy the tranquil countryside in our small group setting.

This isn’t one of those tours where a massive crowd of people is following a guide around, struggling to try and hear and see what they’re talking about. Rather, this is an intimate setting with a maximum 8 participants allowed so everyone receives a personalized experience.

Once we were picked up from our hotel by our tour guide, we headed out on a brief trip to the Douro Valley as our guide told us fascinating stories about the area.

We made a quick stop at the majestic Peso da Regua to take some photos and videos before making our way to the first winery stop of the day.

In my case, it was Quinta do Tedo, which is an insane 18th-century estate right where the Douro and Tedo Rivers merge and is known for its house-style blended Ruby and Tawny Ports!

We had an educational wine-tasting session here before heading back on the road, stopping at the amazing PinhĂŁo, which played a massive role in the commerce and transport of wine from Douro to Porto.

Finally, we ended up at Quinta do Beijo, where we tried even more wines while learning about how each one is produced and the differences between them.

Followed up with a serene boat ride down the river and an exquisite lunch at a traditional local restaurant (just keep in mind when weather isn’t ideal the boat ride can get quite rainy and windy so dress accordingly!).

More Information & Tour Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, 2. private douro valley wine tour: 2 wine estates, lunch and cruise.

  • Duration: 8 Hours
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM
  • Includes: Lunch, Wine tasting, Professional guide, transport by air-conditioned minivan, Alcoholic Beverages, Guided visit to 2 wine estates with tastings of different wines and port

This next tour draws many similarities to the first, starting early in the morning and with a convenient hotel pickup so you don’t have to worry about any kind of transport.

The Private Douro Valley Wine Tour: 2 Wine Estates, Lunch and Cruise  shows off the absolute best the UNESCO Heritage Site has to offer, and that’s saying a lot considering there’s new beauty and adventure to experience around every corner.

If you’re looking for an enchanting, stress-free day away from the city, this experience should be near the top of your list!

After picking us up at our hotel in Porto, we drove out in our comfy air-conditioned minivan down the winding roads overlooking the beautiful landscape of the valley.

On our journey, our guide was there to animatedly narrate quite the comprehensive account of Portuguese history, how it came to be, and cultural insight.

We took my favorite kind of stop – a coffee break – to stretch our legs and enjoy the fresh air before continuing on Sabrosa, which is known for its basket weaving, embroidery, and cheesemaking!

Here, we ventured through 2 charming wineries where we were taught how they produce their wine, as well as some additional history behind the Douro Region.

The wine was incredible – probably  too  incredible – so I was glad we had a filling, tasty Portuguese 3-course lunch to balance it out. After fueling up, we set out to PinhĂŁo where we took some photos at a spectacular viewpoint (honestly so much more impressive in person than in photos!).

We then boarded a traditional Rebelo boat for a nearly one-hour scenic cruise down the river, which was so tranquil and offered such a different perspective of the area than the viewpoints did!

Before visiting another famous winery in Folgosa, we drove down National Road 222, which I learned is considered to be the most beautiful road in the world! With so much beauty, great company, learning opportunities, and tasty wine and food, what’s not to love?!

3. Douro Valley All Included: Expert Guide, Boat, Lunch, Tastings

  • Duration: 8.5 Hours
  • Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: 8:00 AM
  • Includes:  Air-conditioned vehicle transport, specialized guide, guided tour of 2 wineries, Douro DOC wine tasting, gourmet olive oil tasting, panoramic cruise in PinhĂŁo, bottled mineral water, umbrella, all-inclusive

Tucked into the rolling hills and neverending vineyards of northern Portugal sits the beguiling Douro Valley, which has even gained the UNESCO World Heritage site designation!

Once you venture into these breathtaking landscapes, you’ll understand why, with its timeless beauty and world-famous winemaking heritage. The Douro Valley All Included: Expert Guide, Boat, Lunch, Tastings Tour  was a treat in every sense of the word, taking us on an adventure that I can’t wait to do again!

Whether you consider yourself to be a wine newbie or wine connoisseur, this tour is perfect for just about anyone of legal drinking age. The excursion begins relatively early in the morning with a convenient pickup right from your hotel lobby, so you don’t have to worry about separate transportation.

Our air-conditioned coach was spacious, smooth, and with windows large enough to take in the views as we listened to our guide’s interesting commentary about the history and importance of wine in the area.

After some stops for coffee and to enjoy one of the most legendary lookouts over the Douro Valley, we headed down for a wonderful boat cruise in a traditional “Rabelo” which are what transported the wine barrels to Porto!

I love this kind of stuff – not only learning about it but being able to experience firsthand what countless people before me did. We even got the chance to drive the boat, which was a bit nerve-wracking at first, but so much fun!

After that, we enjoyed a filling traditional Portuguese lunch where we had time to relax and chat with the rest of our small group and our guide about what we’d experienced so far.

We also tried 2 different Douro DOC wines before heading to a magnificent wine tasting and gourmet olive oil tasting in PinhĂŁo, which most tours did not offer! Last but not least, we followed it up with a visit to a 5-star wine producer where we learned firsthand everything from growing the grapes to bottling it!

4. Premium Small Group Douro Valley Wine Tour From Porto

  • Includes:  Transport in comfortable minivan, 3-course lunch, Douro DOC wines, guided visit to 2 premium wineries, wine tastings, English-speaking exclusive tour expert

Escape the bustling streets of Porto and embark on a luxurious adventure through the charming Douro Valley with this next meticulously crafted experience. Promising a day full of opulence, gorgeous landscapes, and unparalleled wine-tasting opportunities, no detail has been forgotten.

The Premium Small Group Douro Valley Wine Tour from Porto  is an exclusive excursion where you’ll be treated like a VIP, with a guide that feels more like a longtime friend than someone you just met!

Starting off early in the morning, the guide came to pick us up right from our hotel which was nice and convenient as we were bringing along jackets and small bags.

This is a small-group tour, but ours consisted of literally just the 4 of us in my party and one other person so it was super fun! We all became friends, and it felt like we were going on a little road trip while listening to our guide tell us all about the local history and culture.

We had a nice little minivan for the day, which was smaller than the coaches we’d taken on other tours but perfect for our group size and very comfortable. We made a few different stops along the way for coffee as well as taking in some of the most divine views.

There are plenty of charming little villages on the route, and it was amazing to get to cruise through these postcard-perfect places.

We got to enjoy guided tours of 2 different well-reputed wineries, where we got to learn about each of their winemaking processes, the history behind each, and try plenty of samples!

At this point I was ready for lunch, and we had an amazing selection of classic Portuguese dishes paired with either a white or red.

While the wine-tasting part is obviously not for everyone, I will say that this is a great tour option for the entire family to learn about and see this majestic region!

5. Douro Valley Tour with 3 Wineries Visits, 9 Wine Tastings, Lunch

  • Includes:  Transport by air-conditioned minivan, professional tour guide, tasting of 9 wines, traditional lunch, bottled water

If you’re looking for that best bang for your buck tour through any wine-lover’s paradise, look no further! The Douro Valley Tour with 3 Wineries Visits, 9 Wine Tastings, Lunch experience ticks all the boxes, taking you on an exclusive-access day through tastings of exquisite wines and ports.

This small-group tour offers the opportunity to engage with winemakers and professionals who will take you through the art of blending and aging these special wines to perfection.

Just like every other on this guide, this tour also includes a hotel pickup so you all you have to worry about is having fun and enjoying the view!

As we cruised over the beautiful, winding roads, our guide chatted with us about Portuguese history and culture, and how it’s tightly intertwined with wine.

As we made pretty good time, we were able to make a stop at the gorgeous Peso da RĂŠgua, which sits right on the banks of the river and has played a huge role in the production and transportation of Port wine.

We then arrived at Quinta do Tedo, which is one of the top wineries in the region and is where we they explained which wine was which and the differences between each.

Accompanied by a guided wine tasting, I felt like a bit of a pro afterward! We then went to the cute little village of PinhĂŁo where we visited their historical railway station before moving on to Quinta da RoĂŞda to try insane selections of Port during another guided tasting.

We couldn’t leave out the quaint Quinta do Beijo, where the actual owner of the property came out to give us a tour of the property and explain his production and flavor process!

I know it depends on the time available, but we got lucky and were able to do a quick visit to D’Origem for a tasting of DOC Douro wines as well as some olive oil! It was a fantastic day, and while it did last all day, it was an unforgettable journey!

Cosa fare a Porto & Douro?

Cosa degustare a Porto & Douro?

1 – Cockburn’s Lodge & Cooperage

Cockburn's Lodge & Cooperage

Rating: ⭐️ 4.8/5 ( 1407 reviews )

“Thoroughly enjoyed the tour and found the story of Cockburn port absolutely fascinating.” Anne, civitatis

Cockburn’s Lodge is one of the most unique Port wine cellars that you can visit in Porto for two reasons.

First, it’s the largest in the area, with over 10 million liters of wine aged in hundreds of wooden vats and barrels.

Second, it’s the only one with an on-site cooperage, where you can witness the coopers in action repairing barrels and fixing vats.

Each tour is the same, but the difference in ticket price determines how premium your wine and tasting room will be and whether it will be paired with cheese or chocolate.

  • Book this tour

The Cockburn’s Lodge is one of the most impressive and authentic Port wine cellars you can visit.

The facility is not only the largest in the city but also features a grand cobblestoned hallway that makes an impact when you suddenly turn a corner and face the seemingly endless rows of wooden vats and barrels.

2 – Graham’s Port Lodge

Graham's Port Lodge, Porto

Rating: ⭐️ 4.7/5 ( 224 reviews )

“The views of Porto from the winery are incredible.” MarĂa JosĂŠ, Civitatis

Graham’s Port Lodge is one of the most internationally recognizable Port wine brands and an official Port supplier to the British royal family. Graham’s distinguished cellar and tasting rooms reflect the refined style of the stereotypically elegant English gentleman.

Whether you choose to indulge in their entry-level Ports in the main tasting room or treat yourself to a premium selection in the VIP Vintage Room, you’ll gain an appreciation of how Graham’s Port wine has consistently stood out from the pack since the early 19th century.

Graham’s and Cockburn’s are both owned and operated by the same family, Symington Family Estates , so there may be some overlap of information in the tours. However, the two brands and lodges couldn’t be more different.

Whereas Cockburn’s provides a behind-the-scenes look at the craft of the cooperage, Graham’s tasting room offers impeccable views over Porto and the riverside that are simply breathtaking.

3 – Quevedo Port Wine & Cheese or Chocolate Tasting

Quevedo Port Wine & Cheese or Chocolate Tasting

Rating: ⭐️ 4.9/5 ( 262 reviews )

“Excellent value for money, great guide and the port was also excellent.” Stefan, Getyourguide

Quevedo is one of the new kids on the block compared to the other Port wine houses. Established in 1993, the Quevedo brand is younger than many of the visitors who come to its tasting room.

However, the Quevedo family’s winemaking traditions go back over five generations, and this expertise is evident in the quality of their Port wine.

Although there are no Quevedo cellars to visit in Porto, there’s a beautiful two-story tasting room where you can try not only Port wine but also dry red and white wines — and even a housemade gin.

Quevedo’s wine specialist, Michael, was a gracious host for the Port wine tasting — paired with cheese and chocolate, which I highly recommend.

The low-key vibes of the space make it easy to feel comfortable and relaxed without the overly formal and rigid structure you might come across in other tastings. The aged white Ports are an uncommon style you must try while there.

4 – Porto Food & Wine Tasting Tour

Porto_ 3-Hour Food and Wine Tasting Tour - Guided Experience

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 1206 reviews )

“Our guide was fantastic! Great food and wine – lots of fun! Easy walking and a nice small group. Highly recommended!” Kathryn, Viator

The tour provider, Bluedragon , runs this popular walking tour. You’ll have the opportunity to sample authentic Portuguese wine and cuisine in five typical bars, cafes and restaurants across Porto’s historic downtown.

There will be a maximum of 15 participants on this tour, but if you prefer a more intimate and personalized experience, you can upgrade to the private tour option. Whatever option you choose, your taste buds will be delighted with sweet and savory pastries washed down with sweet and dry wines.

The quality of a food and wine tasting tour is all about choosing the most authentic and traditional eateries in the city. On this tour, you’ll not only enjoy the best flavors of Porto but also experience them in places that the locals have frequented for generations.

5 – Sweet Port & Dry Wine Walking Tour

Porto_ Port and Douro Wine Walking Tour with Tastings

Rating: ⭐️ 4.7/5 ( 642 reviews )

“We had the most amazing afternoon! our guide was so lovely and would keep checking in to see if we had any queries and made the whole experience even more enjoyable. We would 100% recommend doing this tour!” Heather, Getyourguide

If you want to try some non-sweet Douro wines along with some Port, this is the tour for you. Enjoy a total of 10 tastings at three different wine cellars while learning about the history of producing fortified and non-fortified wines in the Douro Valley.

You’ll meet your EFun tour guide along the riverside of the Cais de Gaia and then stroll around the cobblestone alleyways from one wine cellar to the next to sample the best Port and Douro wines that each one has to offer.

Without a doubt, you get plenty of bang for your buck with this tour as far as wine tasting goes. The chance to try ten different wines in just a few hours is a challenge that most wine lovers would happily accept.

This is also a good option if someone in your party stubbornly opposes sweet wines, as traditional robust red wines are also on the menu.

6 – City Lovers Wine Tasting Tour

Porto_ Walking and Wine Tasting Tour with Snacks

Rating: ⭐️ 4.4/5 ( 1339 reviews )

“Daniela was a knowledgeable guide with lots of historic facts about Porto. The walking gave a great view of the city, and the wine tastings were amazing.” Tej, Getyourguide

This City Lovers tour is a great choice if you want to try three very different, yet all iconic, styles of Portuguese wine — from the lightest of the light Vinho Verde to the boldest Douro reds and luxurious Port wines, your palate will need to use the full range of its taste buds with plenty of smoked meats and cheeses to keep up the tempo.

Starting at either Restaurante MO in the center of Porto or by the bridge in the Cais de Ribeira, your guide is ready to take you on a gastronomic adventure with some of the best flavors Portugal has to offer.

This is a fantastic money-for-value option, as you’ll get plenty of Portuguese tapas and different styles of wine.

Book this tour at the beginning of your stay, and that way, you’ll know which styles of Portuguese wines you prefer to help narrow down the hunt for goodies during the rest of your trip.

7 – Petiscos & Wine Tour

Petiscos & Wine Tour in Porto

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 115 reviews )

“Great way to get a taste of Porto! Experienced tucked away places that we wouldn’t have found on our own.” Julie, Viator

Let Food Lover Tour guide you and your palate to the tastiest and most authentic bars and restaurants in the historic city center of Porto.

You’ll have a chance to try typical Portuguese tapas (or petiscos, as the Portuguese say) and sample different styles of red, white, sparkling and fortified wines.

This tour will only have a maximum of 10 participants, so you’re guaranteed to enjoy the intimacy of a small group experience while receiving the guide’s full attention for any questions you might have, like “Can I try some more of that?”

This experience has an almost perfect five-star rating on Viator, which speaks to the quality of the food, wine and guide that you’ll have on this tour.

The tour starts at 6 PM, and you’ll eat enough to fill you up, so why not book this experience over a sit-down dinner and try a larger variety of food and wine at more locations?

8 – Full-Day Douro Valley Day Trip

Full-Day Douro Valley Day Trip from Porto

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 4327 reviews )

“Perfect tour of the Douro Valley. Guide was fantastic – informative and engaging. Wineries and food were excellent. Small group in a comfortable minibus. Couldn’t have asked for more.” Adam, Viator

The well-known and respectable tour provider, Living Tours , operates this full-day tour to the heart of the Douro Valley from Porto.

While enjoying the unparalleled views of the Douro River Valley, you’ll be treated to wine tastings at prestigious estates and a regional lunch at a local restaurant.

Another highlight of this unforgettable tour is the river cruise in PinhĂŁo on a traditional Rabelo-style boat to experience how wine was transported down this river for centuries.

Visiting the Douro Valley is a must-do while in Porto. This tour package provides a convenient and affordable way to try some of the best wines and cuisine in this region without having the worry about navigating around these sometimes hair-raising roads (which is even less fun after a few glasses of Port!).

9 – Small Group Douro Valley Tour

Small Group Full-Day Douro Valley Day Trip from Porto

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 3178 reviews )

“Our tour to Douro valley was the highlight of our trip to Portugal. We visited two wineries, had a delicious lunch at another winery, and did a cruise down the river as well.” Shobi, Viator

Let CoolTour Oporto take you and just a few others on a scenic day trip to the Douro Valley from Porto.

On a small group tour to the heart of this scenic UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll visit several wineries and indulge in a typical regional lunch.

There’s no need to worry about rushing to a pickup point in the city, as this tour includes hotel pickup at no extra cost. Sit back, relax and get ready to ride through the awe-inspiring rolling hills of the incomparable Douro River Valley.

Compared to a large group tour with dozens of fellow travelers, this small group tour is only slightly more expensive and is well worth it, considering the added comfort and attentiveness you’ll have from your guide and hosts at the wineries.

10 – Three Douro Vineyards & Lunch

Douro Valley Wine Tour from Porto with Lunch and Tastings at Three Vineyards

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 1053 reviews )

“Fantastic trip out to the Douro Valley. A lot of thought has gone into the Wineries selected, with the intention to support locally owned vineyards. A great level of foundational knowledge supplied by both the driver and the vineyard staff. Exceptionally helpful staff as well!” Zoe, Viator

Another popular experience organized by EFun Tours takes you on a wine-tasting journey to three different vineyards in the terraced hills of the Douro Valley.

You’ll have a chance to walk through legendary estates, such as Quinta das Casterlares and Quinta da RoĂŞda, and try their remarkable wines.

In between the winery visits, you’ll stop at the town of PinhĂŁo for a hearty lunch overlooking the Douro River and the valley’s seemingly endless hills that fade into the horizon.

This experience is similar to the other Douro Valley day trips. However, the main difference is the lack of possibility to add a Douro River boat cruise to your excursion. If this is a must-do for you, it’s better to choose one of the other tours, but if you’d rather visit three wineries instead of two, this is the tour package for you.

11 – Private Douro River Cruise plus Vineyards & Lunch

Private Douro Valley River Cruise plus Two Vineyards and Lunch

Rating: ⭐️ 4.9/5 ( 651 reviews )

“This was one of the best wine tours I’ve ever been on. Not only were the wines and ports fantastic, but our guides and the winemaker made the tour and explanations fun and interesting—this wasn’t stuffy at all like some wine tours can be and the group was laughing the whole time! The lunch place is beautiful with panoramic views of the Douro Valley (…) ” Madeline, Getyourguide

Take a day trip to the Douro from Porto with the tour provider, aDayinDouro . This experience is more intimate than many of the other Douro tours, as you’ll be having a home-cooked meal by a professional chef at the family’s very own winery.

Besides the incredible lunch overlooking the Douro Valley, you’ll also enjoy a riverboat cruise with onboard snacks and drinks. After this, you’ll visit two wineries in the region to taste a selection of dry and Port wines.

As guests must be at least 12 years old for this tour, this may be a disqualifier for many of you, so you’ll need to choose another tour on our list. If this isn’t an issue for you, take advantage of this opportunity to have a more intimate experience in the Douro with a family-owned winery and smaller estates in the region.

12 – Private Wine Tour in the Douro Valley

Private Wine Tour in the Douro Valley

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 193 reviews )

“We felt like we were spending a day with family. We learned so much about the valley, and about port wines and food. We had the most amazing lunch in such a beautiful region, it seemed like a dream. Choose this tour with confidence, it’s like no other!” Patricia, Viator

Tourvent offers one of the most exclusive and highly rated day trips to the Douro from Porto, which is why it’s one of the few tours you can find on Viator with a nearly perfect five-star rating and no review below four stars.

On this Douro tour, you’ll not only visit several Quintas for private wine tastings and enjoy a three-course meal at one of the finest restaurants in the region but, during all this, you’ll be accompanied by one of the best guides in the area to make you feel at home and cared for at every step of the way.

The Viator ratings and reviews on this tour truly speak for themselves — you’re simply guaranteed to have a good time with this experience. Although the price per person is slightly higher than the group tours, you’ll be ensured that your private day trip to the Douro is truly special for you and your loved ones.

13 – Douro Valley & Mateus Palace Small-Group Tour

Douro Valley & Mateus Palace Small-Group Tour

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 36 reviews )

“Pedro from North on Wheels is a wonderful guide! He is knowledgeable, professional, patient and a fun person to spend the day with. Highly Recommend! Weather, food, scenery were all perfect!” Kathy, Viator

North-on-Wheels organizes this intimate tour into the Douro Valley in a private Mercedes van for groups of only up to 5 people at a time. This is a great bargain for a private or nearly private tour, depending on how many are in your party.

Besides some of the typical stops of all Douro Valley tours, this excursion also includes a stop at Mateus Palace in Vila Real. As opposed to the other tours, it has a detailed itinerary so you can already know exactly where you’ll be visiting on this tour.

Although this tour has fewer reviews than the other Douro tours, it’s notable that none of the reviews are below five stars. This certainly speaks to the high quality of the organization of the tour and the attentiveness of the guide, who’s mentioned in nearly every review.

14 – CĂĄlem Port Wine Cellars & Fado Show

CĂĄlem Port Wine Cellars & Fado Show

Rating: ⭐️ 4.4/5 ( 1997 reviews )

“The Fado show was absolutely fantastic.” Akvile, Getyourguide

The CĂĄlem Cellars and Fado Show is certainly a crowd favorite among visitors to Porto.

Not only do you get to take a tour of the CĂĄlem Cellars where they store and age millions of liters of Port wine, but you also get to sample two glasses of their Port while enjoying a live show of Fado music.

Before your tour starts, you can enjoy a modern Port wine museum in the waiting area. During the tour, you’ll also be treated to innovative installations that help demonstrate the capacity and functionality of the large vats and barrels.

Although CĂĄlem Cellar tours are not the most exclusive experience with group sizes of up to 45 people, the guide will give you a comprehensive overview of how the different styles of Port wine are made.

This is a perfect introduction for those just discovering Port wine, and the fado show during the tasting makes for a complete Portuguese experience at an excellent price.

15 – Casa do Fado Live Concert & Port Wine Tasting

Casa do Fado Live Concert & Port Wine Tasting

Rating: ⭐️ 4.8/5 ( 2811 reviews )

“We really enjoyed the Fado show experience. The singer was very talented as well as the guitar players. Performance was excellent along with great space acoustics! We felt that they were successful in transmiting knowledge and enthusiasm for Fado music. we highly recommend it.” Monalisa, Viator

At Casa do Fado , you can sip on Port wine while enjoying a live Fado concert .

During the show, you’ll learn about the history of the emblematic wine and about the genre of Fado music, including its development over the centuries, particularly in Lisbon and Coimbra.

Casa do Fado has three different locations in the historic center of Porto, so you can attend a show that’s closest to your accommodation or near a restaurant that you plan to visit for some grilled fish or the typical Francesinha.

This Fado show and port wine tasting is a great option if you prefer to hear live music over a guided tour, or simply as an additional wine tasting experience after visiting the cellars in Gaia or the vineyards in the Douro.

16 – Casa da Guitarra Fado Show & Wine Tasting

Casa da Guitarra Fado Show & Wine Tasting

Rating: ⭐️ 4.8/5 ( 1752 reviews )

“spacious room, authentic and modern at the same time. We had a wonderful time! With two exceptional singers and musicians! It has become a must-visit place for us in Porto.” Reko, Getyourguide

Casa da Guitarra offers one of the best fado shows in the city , which is paired with a Port wine tasting free of charge.

This is your chance to see how a Portuguese-style guitar is played and accompanied by the beautifully melancholic Fado singers.

An illustrated postcard about the history of Fado is included with your entry ticket — the perfect keepsake to take home with you and remember this unforgettable music and wine experience in Porto.

An added bonus of this fado concert and Port wine tasting experience is the venue itself. Casa da Guitarra features an exhibition of traditional Portuguese instruments, including the viola de Fado. This show is perfect for both wine and music lovers.

17 – Fado na Baixa Port Wine & Live Music

Fado na Baixa Port Wine & Live Music

Rating: ⭐️ 4.8/5 ( 1639 reviews )

“Excellent experience. The mix of music, the history of Fado and a glass of Port wine constitutes an incredible experience. I would recommend it for those who try Fado for the first time but even for someone with a little more experience.” Jaime, Getyourguide

Fado na Baixa offers one of the most comprehensive Fado experiences in Porto .

The show is divided into four segments and features four musicians that’ll take you on a journey through traditional Fado from Lisbon, Coimbra-style Fado and the legendary songs of Amalia Rodrigues.

All of this will be paired with a chilled glass of tawny port for a sip of comforting sweetness to complement the melancholic melodies coming from the stage.

Fado na Baixa has a rotating cast of performers, so chances are you would be able to catch a different show each day of the week. That being said, all the singers and musicians are some of the best performers of Fado that you can see in downtown Porto.

18 – World of Wine Museum Entry & Tasting

World of Wine Museum Entry & Tasting

Rating: ⭐️ 4.9/5 ( 18 reviews )

“Fabulous place to know about the life of grapes. How fascinating the storytelling to explain the beauty and hardship to turn the beautiful berries into something so elegant and classy.” Cheng, Headout

The World of Wine is much more than a single museum. This wine-themed amusement park of sorts is actually a collection of six separate museums that focus on cork-making, rosĂŠ, fashion, history and even chocolate.

This ticket grants entry to the Wine Experience museum, where you can explore interactive installations about everything you need to know about wine.

Learn how and where wine is made and the history of glass bottle making. Then, walk through a blind aroma exhibit where you can try to smell the subtle notes commonly found in white and red wines.

This is truly a one-of-a-kind wine experience in Vila Nova de Gaia. One highlight of the Wine Experience museum is the small cinema showing a film on the landscapes and wine regions of Portugal. Be sure not to skip it!

After your visit, there are plenty of chic restaurants with wonderful riverside views inside the WOW facilities where you can have a snack or scrumptious meal. In one restaurant, you can even dine inside a giant wine barrel!

19 – Vinho Verde Wine Tasting & Picnic at Quinta Santa Cristina

Vinho Verde Wine Tasting & Picnic at Quinta Santa Cristina

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 3 reviews )

“What a wonderful experience from start to finish! Transport was on time, friendly and the vehicle was clean. It was a beautiful drive from Porto to the Vineyard. Once you arrive at the property you are immediately greeted by the most beautiful panoramic views of the vineyard and the mountains. (…) The wine is amazing, and the food was delicious! Highly recommend this experience for couples and groups!” Catherine, Viator

Although the Douro Valley and Port wine might be the first things that come to mind when thinking about wine tours and tastings near Porto, you shouldn’t overlook its closest wine region, Vinho Verde, and a chance to visit Quinta de Santa Cristina .

The name of this wine style and region literally translates to “green wine,” but the most typical example of this wine is white in color, low alcohol, delicately aromatic and slightly sparkling.

This tour is a great opportunity to try this wine as it’s meant to be enjoyed — in the sunshine paired with a picnic and beautiful views.

If you’re looking for a wine-tasting experience at a vineyard near Porto and don’t have the time or endurance for a full-day trip to the Douro Valley, this half-day wine tour to Quinta Santa Cristina is a wonderful substitute.

You can spend the day sipping wine with vineyard views and still be back in time to hit the streets of Porto in the early evening.

20 – Private DĂŁo Region Wine Tour from Porto

Private DĂŁo Region Wine Tour from Porto

“The vehicle was very nice, clean and equipped with water. We were able to sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. The tour was very interesting and Carlos is very well informed and knowledgeable.” Diana, Viator

Endless Weekend Tours runs this private tour for up to 7 people to the DĂŁo wine region.

Located southeast of Porto, the DĂŁo wine region may be lesser known than its more famous counterparts to the north, the Douro and Vinho Verde regions, but it’s not to be missed.

DĂŁo DOC is traditionally known for its sparkling wines that many say can rival even the best examples of Cava and Champagne, but they also produce aromatic whites and reds, which are more floral and lighter-bodied due to the higher altitudes and cooler temperatures in this region.

This tour takes you to a castle and cathedral in Lamego and Viseu before visiting different vineyards for wine tastings.

As this is a private tour, you can customize your stops to focus on the styles of wine you prefer or spend more time in museums and historical sites. Make sure to discuss your preferences with your guide before your DĂŁo trip.

The Best Porto Port Houses for Tastings & Tours

View of river and Porto port houses from Vila Nova de Gaia

Are you a wine lover planning a trip to Porto, Portugal? If so, there’s one thing you absolutely can’t miss: Porto port houses.

While technically located just across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, these historic port producers are just a quick walk or boat ride away. You’ll get to tour ancient cellars, learn about port winemaking, and taste some amazing ports.

But with around 60 port wine cellars and tasting rooms to choose from, it can be overwhelming to decide which ones to visit. Don’t worry! As an advanced WSET wine expert , I personally researched and tasted my way through the port houses. And I put together this easy guide that has everything you need to know.

Read on to find out the best port houses in Porto for wine tastings, cellar tours, and more.

The Best Port Houses for Port Tastings

These port houses are great for enjoying port tastings without a tour. And they’re all right along the Douro River just steps apart from each other. So, you can easily do them in one day.

C.N. Kopke port wine and chocolate tasting

If you’re looking for a unique experience, one of my favorite tastings was C.N. Kopke , the oldest port house. What makes it so special? Well, for starters, they pair their delicious ports with chocolate. Yup, you heard that right!

Kopke has been in the game since way back in 1638 when Nicolau KopkĂŤ started a wine-buying venture. But it became a port producer in 1781 after snagging a farm in the Douro Valley.

And let me tell you, they’ve got some seriously old ports. You’ll find vintages dating back to the 1930s. And even a 50-year tawny.

If you want to try some non-fortified wines too, Kopke’s got you covered. These come from Quinta de São Luiz, which they purchased in the 1920s. The vineyards are in the Cima Corgo area of Douro Valley, where you’ll find many of the top quintas.

I love their non-fortified wines too, including reds, rosés, and white wines from vines planted up to 50 years ago. You’ll see top Portuguese grapes like Touriga Nacional and Tinta Cão.

Visiting Tips

In Kopke’s cozy tasting room, you can choose from a selection of tastings that include their ports and Douro Valley DOC wines. The tasting room staff is very knowledgeable, and they’ll give you just the right amount of information without overwhelming you.

Plus, you’ll get to enjoy stunning views of the city while sipping and snacking on traditional Portuguese chocolates.

Quinta do Noval

Quinta do Noval port wine tasting with white port, ruby port, and tawny port

This famous port wine house is another great spot to stop and sip along Vila Nova de Gaia’s waterfront.

Quinta do Noval ’s Douro Valley vineyards date back to 1715. After being hit hard by phylloxera, the property was bought and replanted by a port shipper named António José da Silva.

By 1931, Quinta do Noval was making a name for themselves as one of the only ones that year to declare a vintage. And the president of Portugal chose it for Barack Obama’s visit in 2010. Talk about a good endorsement!

Today, Quinta do Noval makes a variety of ports and non-fortified wines. These are all produced and aged in the Douro Valley.

You won’t want to miss unique finds like the single-vineyard vintage port made from ungrafted vines. Plus, they make an unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage that you can age in the bottle.

For non-fortified wines, you’ll find red wines and white wines from local grape varieties. But they also make international varieties such as Syrah and Petit Verdot.

Quinta do Noval’s tasting room is open for walk-ins, so stop by to try five of their delicious port wines. And did I mention they make their own olive oil too?

Espaço Porto Cruz

Espaco Porto Cruz port house with roof deck

If you’re looking for an interactive and fun wine experience, check out Espaço Porto Cruz .

Cruz is one of the largest port producers, with 10 million bottles sold annually. Their grapes are grown on 400 hectares in the Douro Valley and the wines are produced at Quinta de Ventozelo.

Their ports run the full gamut, with ruby, tawny, white, and rosé. And they’ve got a variety of Vintage, LBV, and Colheita port wines.

The 5-story Espaço Porto Cruz is like a wine lover’s playground. There’s a tasting room, restaurant, wine shop, and even a gelateria! I mean, it’s hard to say no to wine and ice cream .

If you’re planning ahead, you can make a reservation for one of their delicious wine, chocolate, and cheese tastings. But if you’re just popping in, there’s plenty to see and do.

The first floor is a multimedia center with interactive experiences and sensory activities to help you learn all about port wine. And you can even check out some cool contemporary Portuguese art while you’re there.

But my favorite level is the fourth-floor roof deck. The 360-degree terrace has jaw-dropping views of the river and city. It’s the perfect spot to order a glass of wine and a cheese platter, and just take it all in.

Besides Cruz ports, they also serve ports from Dalva, a smaller producer owned by the C. da Silva family. And a great selection of white, rosĂŠ, red, and sparkling Portuguese wine.

The Best Porto Port Houses for Port Cellar Tours

While there are many great port houses, these are my picks for some of the best port wine cellars for port tours. All offer options for an English tour and have excellent port wines to taste.

Taylor Fladgate

For experiencing one of the larger and most famous port houses, I’d recommend Taylor Fladgate . This OG producer has been making port for more than 300 years. And their 20-year Tawny is one of my go-to ports.

It all started back in 1692 when an English merchant named Job Bearsley arrived in Portugal. In later generations, they were the first British wine shipper to buy land in the Douro Valley. And they even invented Late Bottled Vintage port.

Taylor specializes in vintage ports. And you’ll find ones dating back to the 1960s. Their tawny ports go up to 50 years. Plus, they have a newly released Very Very Old Port (VVOP), made with wine from before the Second World War!

Take a self-guided audio tour to explore the ancient cellars at your own pace. Learn about the history of port wine and how production has changed over the years.

After your tour, you can enjoy a tasting and fantastic views from the terrace overlooking the city. And if you’re there around lunchtime, grab a meal at the on-site restaurant, Barão Fladgate.

Plan to spend an hour and a half to two hours for the informative tour and port wine tasting. No reservations are needed for the audio tour. But you can book a private tour and tasting in advance.

Three bottles of Taylor Fladgate port and a port wine tasting

Churchill’s

If you’re looking for a more intimate visit, head to Churchill’s . This family business is located a bit off the beaten path. But it’s worth the walk.

Although founded by a descendant of the Graham’s Port family, Churchill’s is a newer port producer. John Graham (aka Johnny) arrived in Porto in the 1970s.

His family had recently sold Graham’s Port Lodge to the Symington Family, who also own Cockburn’s Port, Warre’s Port, and Dow’s Port.

Johnny wanted to make port wines in a more modern, drier style. So, he founded Churchill’s, naming it after his wife Caroline Churchill.

Grapes for the wines come from Quinta da Gricha, a grade-A vineyard in the Cimo Corgo sub-region of Douro Valley. These are hand-picked and foot-treaded, ensuring the best taste and quality.

I like that Churchill’s is a smaller place, so you don’t have to deal with massive groups during the tour and tasting.

You’ll have the opportunity to visit the cellars with a tour guide and learn about the port-making process. And then enjoy a tasting of their excellent port and other Douro wines in the 1982 bar and garden.

Which wine region should you visit? Click to take the quiz.

Ramos Pinto

Another great option for a tour and tasting experience is Ramos Pinto . This historic port house was founded by the young artist, Adriano Ramos Pinto, who had great success exporting his ports to Brazil.

Over the years, Ramos Pinto continued to expand by acquiring more vineyards in the Douro region. They currently own four quintas. And they’re now part of the famous Louis Roederer Champagne house.

During the museum visit, you’ll learn about the company’s history and Adriano’s unique marketing methods. Then you’ll take a guided tour of the cellar, followed by a tasting of Ramos Pinto ports.

The tasting pours are generous. So, if you plan on visiting multiple port houses, you may want to share one between two people. There are also different levels of tastings to choose from, so you can tailor your experience to your preferences.

You can make a reservation in advance online, but they do take walk-ins if space is available.

Port wine barrels in a port cellar

Porto Wine Museum

While you’re in Vila Nova de Gaia, don’t miss the WOW museum complex . With 7 museums and 12 restaurants and bars, you’ll be hard-pressed to run out of things to see, eat, and drink.

Learn about winemaking and Portugal’s wine regions at The Wine Experience. Plus, enjoy a wine tasting at the end of your visit.

And did you know Portugal is the world’s largest producer of cork? Find out how wine corks are made at Planet Cork. This interactive museum has kid-friendly exhibits so it’s great for the whole family.

Wine Tour in Porto

If you’re not the DIY kind of traveler and prefer a guided tour, this is a great half-day port wine tasting tour . It includes an English-speaking guide who will take you to 3 port houses. You’ll get to visit a cellar and enjoy tasting 7 different ports.

Where to Stay for Visiting Port Houses in Porto

View of the city of Porto Portugal and the Douro River

As one of the most affordable places to visit in Western Europe, there are lots of great accommodation options in Porto. If you plan to spend most of your time seeing the historical attractions in the old city center of Porto, then you’ll want to be on the Porto side of the river.

Eurostars Porto Douro is a great value. Located right along the banks of the Douro River, it’s close to the Dom Luis I Bridge. So, you’ll have easy access to both the port houses and Porto’s main attractions. And they even have room options with kitchens.

But if you’re all about the wine, there are great places to stay in Vila Nova de Gaia too. The Yeatman is a fantastic luxury option. All rooms have river-facing views. And the hotel has a great program of wine tastings, seminars, and wine dinners. Plus, a 2-Michelin-star restaurant.

FAQs About Visiting Porto Port Houses

Restaurants and port wine tasting rooms in Vila Nova de Gaia

When is the Best Time to Visit Port Houses?

The summer months are the best weather-wise for visiting Porto. July and August are the peak tourist months. If you want to avoid the crowds, you’ll still have great weather in May, June, September, and October.

You could also time your visit around the Essência do Vinho event that’s held in Porto each year. Wine producers from all over Portugal come together at the Palácio da Bolsa. You can join masterclasses, walk-around tastings, and find out who made the list of the top 10 Portuguese wines.

Where Are All the Port Houses in Porto?

The port houses are all located in Vila Nova de Gaia. This is an area on the southern bank of the Douro River just across from the city of Porto. Getting there is easy. Just walk across the double-decker Dom LuĂs I Bridge. Take the lower deck for the faster route.

Or for spectacular views, I recommend walking across the top deck. At the other end, the Gaia cable car will take you straight to the pier. And you’ll be right in the middle of all the port houses.

Another option is to take a boat taxi across the river for a few euros. These run every 15 minutes but may not be available in the evenings.

Vila Nova de Gaia is perfect for exploring on foot. But be warned that the port houses farther from the river are up steep hills. So, wear comfortable shoes. And don’t worry, the port will be worth it!

Do You Need Reservations for Port Houses?

Visiting port houses is a popular activity in Porto, so it’s best to be prepared before you go. Some places don’t require reservations, but it’s always a good idea to check ahead of time to avoid any surprises.

If you’re set on visiting a specific port house, make a reservation in advance to ensure you get in without any wait time. But if you didn’t plan ahead, you can try walking in and see if they can fit you in.

Keep in mind that port is stronger than your average wine. And those small tastings can add up fast! It’s best to limit your tastings to 2-3 per day, but at most 4.

History of Porto Port Houses

Sandeman Cellars port house in Porto Portugal

If you’re familiar with port, you know that it’s made in the Douro Valley, which is about 60 miles inland from Porto. But you may be wondering how all these port houses ended up by the coast.

Well, back in the day when Great Britain was at war with France, they could no longer get their beloved Bordeaux and Burgundy wines. So, they started looking for a new source of good wine.

The British took a liking to Portuguese wines. But found they would often spoil on the long journey.

But then, a couple of English brothers had the brilliant idea to add some grape brandy to the wine before one trip. They found that it worked to preserve the wine. And just like that, port wine was born!

So, British-owned port houses began popping up in the city of Vila Nova de Gaia. This cooler coastal climate was much better for aging the wines than the hot Douro Valley.

The Brits would buy the wine from the Douro Valley and it would be transported downstream in flat-bottomed boats called rabelos. Once aged, the port houses also handled the transport to England.

In the late 1800s, the root-louse phylloxera devastated much of Europe’s vineyards. And many of the Portuguese winemakers gave up and sold their land to British companies.

After the solution was found of grafting vines to American rootstock, port production started up again. Except this time many of the British companies were running the production from start to finish.

So, that’s why you see so many port lodges today with British names like Graham’s, Croft, Taylor, and Sandeman.

Port Winemaking Process

Quinta das Carvalhas in Douro Valley

Grapes for true port wine are grown in the Douro Valley, the oldest demarcated wine region in the world. The vineyards are planted along terraces on steep slopes that rise above the Douro River.

If you’re visiting Porto, make sure to take a wine tour of Douro Valley . It’s seriously one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. And you’ll get to see where all the magic happens.

There are actually 100 grape varieties allowed for port production. But the top ones used for premium ports are Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, and Tinta Roriz (aka Tempranillo).

Since port wine goes through a shorter fermentation process, winemakers use special techniques to extract lots of color and tannin. The traditional method is called foot treading, which involves getting a bunch of people together to stomp (or dance!) on the grapes in large granite troughs (called lagares).

But nowadays, they also use machines like autovinifiers and robotic lagares that don’t require as much manpower.

Once the grape juice reaches 5-9% ABV during fermentation, a neutral grape spirit called aguardente is added. This spirit can be up to 77% ABV, which kills off the yeast before it can convert all the sugar to alcohol. And voila! You have a sweet wine with alcohol levels between 19% and 22%.

Back in the day, all port was aged at the Vila Nova de Gaia port houses. But with the invention of air conditioning, some producers are now aging their ports in the vineyard area.

Styles of Port

Port wine is typically made from a blend of grapes. And often from different harvest years. But there are some single-year versions, such as Vintage Ports, Late Bottled Vintages, and Colheitas.

The style of port varies based on the type of aging vessel. For example, small vs. large oak barrels or stainless-steel tanks. And how long it’s aged.

Here are the most common types:

  • White – A white port made from a blend of indigenous white grape varietals
  • RosĂŠ – A newer port style made like a rosĂŠ wine with red fruit and floral notes
  • Ruby – Fruity style of red port aged for 1-3 years in large oak barrels or stainless steel
  • Tawny – Red port aged for 1-3 years in smaller oak barrels called pipes, giving it nutty and caramel flavors
  • Reserva – Higher quality versions of the basic ruby or tawny ports, with tawny requiring 6 years of aging
  • Aged Tawny – A long-aged tawny port that can range from 10 to 40+ years old, giving it flavors of walnuts, coffee, and chocolate
  • Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) – Ruby port produced from a single harvest year, aged 4-6 years before releasing, and may or may not be filtered
  • Vintage – Ruby port produced from a single vintage, aged 2-3 years, and released unfiltered
  • Single Quinta Vintage – Vintage port made with grapes from a single estate vineyard
  • Colheita – Special tawny port made from a single harvest year and aged a minimum of 7 years

Most ports are released ready to drink. But vintage ports are meant to be aged in the bottle for as much as 40 years. And unfiltered LBVs can improve similarly with time in the bottle.

Port cellar tours and Port tastings in Porto - updated for 2024

Porto is famed for producing Port wine, and a tour of one of the historic port cellars along with a port tasting session, is one of the best unique activities of the city.

Ancient laws dating back to the 17th century, dictate that for the sweet, fortified wine to be classified as Port, it must be stored and matured within the city of Vila Nova de Gaia, which sits opposite Porto on the southern banks of the Douro River. This means that within a relatively compact area of Vila Nova de Gaia are all of the major Port houses and their cellars (which are referred to as Lodges)

Many of the Port houses provide guided tours of their cellars along with Port tasting sessions. These tours and tastings sessions are informative, social and surprisingly inexpensive, and are a fantastic experience while on holiday to Porto.

This guide will detail the best Port tour and tasting sessions and help you get the most from this very enjoyable experience. Related articles: Introduction to Porto – Top 10 Porto

Port cellar tours in Porto

All of the Port cellars are situated on the southern side of the Douro River in the city of Vila Nova de Gaia. Each of the Port houses provides a slightly different experience, but they generally follow the same pattern: • An overview of the production of Port • The history of their company • A guided tour of the cellars (including photo opportunities) • A tasting of two or three ports

The tasting session often compares the three types of Ports; White, Ruby and Tawny or a selection of Ports of different ages.

The typical cost of a cellar tour, with a basic tasting, will range from €14-17. This type of tour is offered by all of the Port houses. More expensive tours include a premium selection of Ports, often hosted in a more impressive tasting room.

All of the Port cellar tours (except for Taylor's) are led by a tour guide, so they have a maximum number of spaces and set times for different languages. Tours should be pre-booked before heading to Vila Nova de Gaia, as turning up on the day can often lead to disappointment, especially in the peak summer season.

We always suggest visiting at least two Port cellars during your stay in Porto. This is a fantastic activity for later in the afternoon or evening, as you may leave a little bit tipsy!

The main tourist area of Vila Nova de Gaia lies along the banks of the river, and the port houses in this area (such as Sandeman and CĂĄlem) will always be the most popular and sell out first. The cellars further away from the river, which are up a steep hill, provide a calmer atmosphere and often have more spaces available. These cellars include Real Companhia Velha, Graham's and Cockburn's.

The interactive map below shows the location of the Porto lodges within Vila Nova de Gaia. The shaded yellow area marks the main tourist area. ( Note: zoom out to see all of the points)

The best Port cellar tours and tastings sessions in Porto

With more than ten different Port houses providing tours and tasting sessions, there is a wide choice available to you. As these are all very similar, you will have a fantastic time whichever one you choose to visit.

The best Port cellars to visit are: 1) Ferreira 2) CĂĄlem 3) Real Companhia Velha 4) Graham's 5) Sandeman 6) Taylor's 7) Ramos Pinto 8) Cockburns 9) Burmester

Insight: If you are new to Porto, we would recommend starting with one of the more tourism-focused Port cellars, such as CĂĄlem or Sandeman, then have a second (or third) tour to one of the more atmospheric cellars, such as Real Companhia Velha, Ferreira, Graham's or Cockburns.

Ferreira is regarded by the residents of Porto as the best Port cellar to visit. It offers an informative tour of some of the oldest port cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia and concludes with a great selection of Ports. The Ferreira company is highly regarded by the Portuguese, as it is a wholly owned Portuguese company (most Port houses were British owned) started by an inspirational woman named Dona AntĂłnia Ferreira.

Ferreira

If you have no prior knowledge of Port, CĂĄlem makes a great starting point. It provides knowledgeable guides and fascinating interactive displays. The downside is that it can get very busy, with large tour sizes and slightly rushed tasting sessions. ( CĂĄlem cellar tour tickets )

Real Companhia Velha provides a more authentic experience and features magnificent port cellars, however it is a long way from the main tourism area of Vila Nova de Gaia. Real Companhia Velha is one of the oldest wine companies of Portugal, having been started by King Jose I in 1757. ( www.realcompan hiavelha.pt)

Graham's is a highly recommended experience, with a relaxed atmosphere and a larger set of cellars (www.grahams -port.com ). The Sandeman cellar, at the heart of the tourism area, has enthusiastic guides and is always a popular choice with visitors: www.sandeman.com

Taylor's should also be mentioned, as it provides a self-guided tour with a multi-language handset. This tour is not limited by visitor numbers, which is great for the busy summer season or if your desired language tour is sold out at other cellars. Taylor’s also has a pretty outside tasting area in a charming courtyard garden. ( www.taylor.pt )

Ramos Pinto makes an interesting choice for your second or third Port tour, as it includes the original 19th-century office and details the 'unique' marketing techniques of the company. www.ramospinto.pt/

Cockburn's is the largest Port cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia. Their tour provides something extra, as here you are able to watch the coopers at work as they preserve and repair the wooden barrels. ( www.cockburns.com )

Burmester is a smaller Port cellar at the base of the Ponte LuĂs I, which is also well worth a visit.

Tourist insight: The port tours are excellent value, but the bottles of Port sold in the shops attached to the Port houses are often not good value. For standard bottles of Port, it is much better value to visit the wine shops in Porto or even the supermarkets. Unique gift: Each bottle of Port states the year it was produced, which can make a unique gift for a birthday or to commemorate a special year such as an anniversary.

Why are the Porto lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia?

All of the Port cellars are located in Vila Nova de Gaia, and the reason for this dates back to the 13th century.

Medieval Porto was effectively ruled by the bishop of Porto, and he taxed all boats that moored in the city. King Alfonso, seeking to avoid these taxes, established a second port in Vila Nova de Gaia (New Town of Gaia) opposite Porto on the southern banks of the Douro.

This port became the main centre for the transportation of grapes from the Upper Douro, and it became law in the 18th century that all Port must be matured within Vila Nova de Gaia.

Best Things to do in Douro Valley Portugal

L isted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Douro Valley Portugal is the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. Nestled in Northern Portugal, the valley is known for its beautiful lookout points, charming villages and abundant wineries. About an hour from the city of Porto, the Douro wine region can easily be visited on a day trip or a long weekend trip while visiting Portugal . Viking River Cruises also offers an intimate longship journey through the Douro.

Table wine and port wine are produced here and shipped all over the world. Spend the day exploring vineyards, crushing grapes with your feet or sampling local wines. In addition to wine tasting , visitors can take a river cruise on the Douro River, go hiking and visit a natural park. Plus, be sure to explore the valley’s villages. Read about these activities, and more, with our roundup of the 6 best things to do in Douro Valley Portugal.

1. Visit a winery

A trip to Douro Valley would be incomplete without a visit to a winery. Quinta da Pacheca in Lamego sits in the heart of the Douro Valley. One of the region’s oldest wine estates, Quinta da Pacheca is a winery, hotel and olive producer all-in-one. Wine lovers can take a guided tour of the winery, book a tasting, go grape stomping, participate in an olive harvesting experience and more. The wine hotel features traditional guest rooms or for something a little more adventurous, guests can go glamping in huge wine barrels.

In addition, Quinta Nova is another hotel and winery that goes way back. Here, visitors can go wine tasting, take a wine-making class, enjoy a vineyard tour at sunset and order traditional Portuguese food at the winery restaurant. Plus, there is a museum associated with the winery that preserves its history.

Quinta do Seixo

Visit Quinta do Seixo for beautiful views over the valley. This winery is part of the Sandeman brand, a popular port wine producer. Here, visitors can have a picnic in the vineyard, take a guided tour of the estate or book a tasting. Quinta do Vale Meao is another famous winery. In the city of Vila Nova de Foz CĂ´a, this winery is family-owned and a great place to learn about Douro Valley wine production.

2. Take a boat tour through the Douro River

One of the easiest ways to see the Douro Valley is from a boat trip down the Douro River, which stretches from the Soria Province in Spain to Porto. In fact, wine was traditionally carried down this river in Rabelo boats, long flat boats, recognizable by the long oar protruding from the back. The wine was then stored in Porto wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. Today, many boats make the same journey, this time carrying tourists as part of organized river cruises.

There are short boat trips that depart from PinhĂŁo or longer ones that leave from Porto. Many tours include wine tasting and lunch. The longer tours from Porto typically make stops at some of the smaller villages along the river valley. Click here  to select the right tour for you.

3. Go to a lookout

The Douro Valley is known for its amazing lookout points. SĂŁo Leonardo da Galafura is one of the most famous lookouts. Here, visitors will be greeted by stunning views of terraced vineyards, rolling hills and the meandering Douro River. There is also a chapel and a picnic area.

São Salvador do Mundo is another breathtaking viewpoint. It’s perched at the top of a hill, and although you can drive up part of the way, you’ll have to walk the rest, but the views are certainly worth the walk. The Valeira Dam, open countryside, lush greenery, rugged slopes and the beautiful Douro River are all visible from the viewpoint.

The Miradouro de Casal de Loivos is another amazing place to soak up the Douro Valley’s natural beauty. It’s located near the village of Casal de Loivos and can be reached by car. From here, viewers can look over Pinhão, the Douro River and several wineries spanning the hillside.

4. Visit the Douro International Natural Park

Immerse yourself in the valley’s untouched nature while hiking in the Douro International Natural Park. This protected area is close to the Spanish border and features a deep river canyon, majestic cliffs, olive trees and many different animal species, including wolves, wild boar, cave bats and Egyptian vultures.

For panoramic views of the canyon, head to one of the park’s many beautiful viewpoints. Penedo Durão is the best viewpoint for birdwatching and Miradouro de Penha das Torres is a great place to see the sunrise. If you’re not sure where to start your adventure to the Douro International Natural Park, book a guided tour, such as this one with Ambieduc .

5. Visit the Douro Museum

Dive into the valley’s history at the Douro Museu or the Museu do Douro. Located in the small town of Régua, the museum is housed in a historic wine warehouse on the riverfront. Exhibits showcase the history of the wine-making industry in the Douro Valley, and its impact on the local community. In addition, you’ll learn about the geographical features of the valley and why these are so well suited for producing wine.

After exploring the museum, enjoy a glass of wine at the on-site wine bar. Visitors receive one complimentary glass of port or table wine with their ticket. For those based in Porto, the museum can be reached by train from the SĂŁo Bento Station or through a boat tour from Porto.

6. Visit the small towns

When you’re not wine tasting or soaking up the views, explore the charming towns scattered throughout the valley. The town of Lamego boasts a beautiful historic chapel sitting atop a grand staircase. The chapel, called the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, was constructed between the 18th and 20th centuries. It features a variety of architectural styles, including Baroque, Romantic and Gothic. The outside of the chapel is decorated in stunning blue and white tiles, called azulejos. Lamego is also home to other historical sites and museums, located just down the hill from the chapel.

Travel Train

If you love azulejos, be sure to visit PinhĂŁo train station, built in 1937. PinhĂŁo is also centrally located, close to many of the most popular wineries, making it a convenient place to stop. There is also a historical train that stops in PinhĂŁo. There is wine and often entertainment on the train.

The train departs from Peso da Régua, another popular town in the Douro Valley. Since many boat tours also depart here, there’s plenty to do for tourists. for example, walk along the Régua pier, check out the town’s churches and grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants.

A Guide to Portugal’s Best Beach Towns

The famed and lesser known spots on and off Portugal’s stunning coast, from the Algarve to the Azores.

wine tours from porto

Portugal is the place to go at the moment. An approximately seven-hour flight from the East Coast, it’s one of the most accessible countries in Europe—but that’s not the only reason why it’s so popular. Portugal is a choose-your-own-adventure country; you can embark on a city exploration, wine tasting tour, action-packed adventure or beach retreat. The best part? You don’t need to pick just one. Everything is a short car ride, train or quick flight away.

Planning a vacation around Portugal’s beach towns is one of the best ways to organize your trip. Each town offers a glimpse into a different side of the country, from the sweeping coastal capital, to the smaller southern regions, to the sunny islands. With picturesque beaches and an impressive culinary scene with plenty of fresh seafood, there’s something for everyone.  For those looking to narrow down the ample options of scenic towns, start with Lisbon, and then venture down the coast to the Algarve. The Azores—a collection of volcanic islands off of the mainland—are not to be missed.

Now, we present the best beach towns (and cities) in Portugal. Don’t forget to pick up a pastel de nata—or two—while you’re there.

Discover Portugal's Beach Town Hidden Gems

When you think of a beach town, a bustling city might not be the first thing to come to mind. Lisbon, however, defies expectations at every turn. As the only European capital along the Atlantic coast, Lisbon is as much a beach town as it is a cultural hub. There are a handful of famed museums—like the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and Museu Nacional do Azulejo —and you can admire the pastel-colored architecture of waterfront Belém. Walk to the suburbs of Alfama and Mouraria, along the hillside below the castle. For a home base, the luxurious Four Seasons Ritz is always a safe option. Slightly removed from the commotion of the city, the hotel serves as a relaxing retreat where you can venture up to the rooftop for a grand view of the ocean. After exploring the city and its local beaches, take a trip to the famed resort town of Sintra. Once a royal sanctuary, it now stands as a glamorous historical site, replete with palaces and sweeping vista points. It can be pretty chaotic, so we recommend booking a guide . Upon your return back to Lisbon, stop into Trinca —a hole in the wall local eater—or dine beachfront at Casa Reîa .

You can also visit Lisbon’s northern cousin, Porto, which is famed for its massive bridges and port wine production. Head to the medieval Ribeira district and meander through vibrant streets while observing the ornate architecture. Stay nearby at Gran Cruz House , which overlooks the Douro River. Go to Foz do Douro to experience the city’s buzzy beach, and follow it with drinks at one of the terrace cafés. You can also take a day trip down the coast to Nazaré and watch the surfers come from near and far to tackle the monster 100-foot waves.

Looking to escape the touristy crowds and up for a longer road trip? Smack in the middle of Lisbon and the Algarve (about an hour and forty minutes from the capital) is the lesser-known parish of Melides. The creative community of Melides is a stark contrast to its sceney neighbor, Comporta. An international set of famed artists—designers, painters, architects and more—have second homes in this humble town. You can pop into the quaint restaurants lining the main cobblestone square, opt for a wine tasting, or go horseback riding on the beach. Stay at the Christian Louboutin -designed Vermelho Hotel for one of the most uniquely ornate experiences; he has permanent residence in Melides. It’s an amalgamation of glamorous art and sleepy coastal streets.

One of Europe’s quintessential beach towns is located just 45 minutes outside of Lisbon. Known for its silky sand and crystal waters, Cascais is the Portuguese Riviera’s top vacation spot. Choose a hotel that’s situated on the coast, like Relais & Châteaux’s Fortaleza de Guincho , which was built on the site of a 17th-century fortress and is home to an eponymous Michelin-starred restaurant. Make sure you squeeze in a cliffside lunch at The Albatroz Hotel overlook for unparalleled ocean views. To take full advantage of all the coastal town has to offer, book a sailboat that takes you along the Atlantic Ocean.

The Algarve is on everyone’s radar as of late, but the southernmost region of Portugal has been enticing travelers since the 15th century. The fishing villages of the past are now filled with restaurants, villas, hotels and bars, making this one of the liveliest beach areas in Europe.  For a bigger resort with a wide range of activities and experiences, book somewhere like Domes Lake Algarve . While you can venture to the beaches, the resort also offers activities in its surrounding lake. Bella Vista Hotel is a romantic oceanfront oasis featuring a L’Occitane spa. Make sure you visit the Bengali Caves on a kayak, paddle board or dolphin cruise from Portimão .

Dubbed the “Hawaii of Europe,” the Azores are the talk of the travel industry. If you want to stick with just this region, there are five-hour direct flights from New York. The Azores are composed of nine volcanic islands, boasting breathtaking foliage and natural feats. Sao Miguel, the largest of the islands, has lake-filled caderas and Europe’s oldest tea plantation. The Azores archipelago also features lagoons, thermal springs and craters to explore, as well as ample whale watching. Two notable hotels include Octant Furnas and Santa Barbara (with its sister partner White serving as a romantic option for honeymooners). Santa Barbara is the Azores’ first eco-beach resort; a luxurious, calming retreat set amid green pastures and blue waters. For a spa-centric vacation, Octant Furnas is all about wellness, with thermal pools, treatment rooms and culinary and sensory experiences. Outside the hotel, there’s no shortage of epic experiences, from an ATV tour of the massive crater of Sete Cidades to canyoning and rappelling down waterfalls.
