How to enable your Mac’s VoiceOver screen reader

An easier way for those with visual impairments to use computers.

By Victoria Song , a senior reporter focusing on wearables, health tech, and more with 11 years of experience. Before coming to The Verge, she worked for Gizmodo and PC Magazine.

A MacBook Pro running macOS Monterey sits on a table in front of a window. The screen displays the Quick note app on top of a pink and purple background.

Starting with macOS X, Apple has included a native screen reader called VoiceOver on its Macs and MacBooks. The feature is designed to help low-vision or blind users navigate their computers — and the internet — more easily. It works by reading aloud text descriptions of everything that appears on the screen, as well as reading any displayed text. The technology also allows users to interact with elements on the screen.

While VoiceOver is primarily meant for those with visual impairments, it can be helpful in many different scenarios — for example, if you’re someone who has a learning disability and prefers to listen to text rather than read it.

Apple has a whole user guide that gets into the nitty-gritty of how to use VoiceOver with refreshable braille displays and trackpad gestures, as well as how to customize the feature to best suit your needs (e.g., reading speed, voice profile, enabling screen curtain for privacy, etc.). But if you’re just getting started, here are a few easy ways to turn on VoiceOver.

  • Open System Preferences and then select Accessibility . From the left-hand menu, in the Vision category, select VoiceOver . Click Enable VoiceOver . You can also click the Open VoiceOver Training button to access the Quick Start training menu. Clicking the Open VoiceOver Utility button will open a menu where you can customize features like reading speed and voice profiles.

A screenshot of the Welcome to VoiceOver window

  • Press Command and the F5 button . This should also bring up a Welcome to VoiceOver window. Click the Use VoiceOver button. In the lower left-hand corner, there’s a Learn More button where you can get the gist of basic commands, learn how the feature works, and practice using it effectively. You can turn it off by pressing the same keys and then clicking the “Turn Off VoiceOver” button.
  • If you have Siri enabled on your Mac, you can ask it to “Turn VoiceOver on” or “Turn VoiceOver off.” If you don’t have Siri enabled, you go to the Apple Menu in the top bar, select System Preferences , and then click the Siri icon. Once there, check the Enable Ask Siri box.
  • Press Option + Command and F5 to bring up the Accessibility shortcut panel. Press the tab key until you hear the VoiceOver option. Then press the space bar.
  • There’s an alternate shortcut if you’re on macOS Big Sur or later and your Mac has a TouchID button. While holding the Command button , quickly press the TouchID button three times . This also works if your Magic Keyboard has a TouchID button.

You can also opt to have VoiceOver turn on whenever you log onto the computer. To do this:

Screenshot of Login Options window displaying Accessibility Options

  • Go to System Preferences .
  • Select Users & Groups , then select the Login Options button at the bottom of the user list.
  • If the lock icon at the bottom left is closed, enter your administrator password.
  • Click the Accessibility Options button on the right-hand side of the window.
  • Check the VoiceOver box and then click Apply .

VoiceOver isn’t the only accessibility feature available on macOS. If you’re interested in exploring other options, check out our macOS accessibility guide here .

What Is the Reader View in Safari and How Do You Use It?

We'll explain how Safari's reading mode can eliminate distractions online and show you how to use it on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Our Apple devices are a pot of gold when it comes to convenient features we may be unaware of. One cool feature on Safari that you may have skipped over is Reader Mode.

Reader View, often referred to as Reading Mode, appears as an icon in the top-left corner of your Safari search bar, and it reworks your webpage into a perfectly organized, ad-free layout to help you focus better on reading the content. You can even make some quick edits to a webpage through this feature.

Want to read a novel or an article without interruption? Reader View is for you. Let's take a look at what it can do and how you can enable it on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

How to Turn on Reader View

Turning on Reader View is extremely easy and only takes a couple of taps. Before you begin, make sure Safari is updated on your device.

Read More: How to Update Safari on a Mac

Then follow these steps to enable the Reader View on an iPhone or iPad:

  • After you open the webpage you'd like to read on Safari, tap on the Reader View icon in the top-left corner of the Search Bar.
  • From the dropdown menu, select Show Reader View . Your webpage will appear ad-free and organized automatically.

If you want to enable Reader View on a Mac, here's how you do it:

  • Load a website in the Safari.
  • Use Command+Shift+R to turn on Reader Mode.
  • Another option would be to click the same icon at the left end of the Smart Search field.

If you don't see the button, it means that webpage doesn't have any articles that can be viewed in Reader View. To stop using Reader View across all devices, just hit the button again. You can also use the Esc key on your Mac to disable Reader View.

How to Make Edits in Reader View

You can also customize a page to your liking. Reader View allows you to choose from nine font styles, four background colors, and various font sizes. Here's how you can make these edits on an iPhone, iPad, and Mac:

  • Tap the Reader View icon again.
  • You should see options for font style in the dropdown menu with the font sizes above it and the background colors below it. Choose whatever you like.

The options to edit a webpage are pretty minimal, but Apple will hopefully expand to a broader range in the future.

A distinct advantage of Reader View is the fact that you can save your webpages as PDFs on iPhone and iPad straight into your Books app using this feature.

How to Make Reader View the Default

Happen to love Reader Mode? There's an option that automatically switches a URL to Reader View every time you open it. It saves up a lot of time and is efficient. Follow these steps to enable this feature on an iPhone or iPad:

  • Tap the Reader View icon in the top left of Safari.
  • Select Website Settings from the dropdown menu.
  • Turn on the toggle for Use Reader Automatically and press Done . The webpage will now automatically switch to Reader View every time you open it.

To do this on a Mac, all you have to do is Control-click on the Reader View icon and select Use Reader View Automatically on [Site Name] .

You can even enable this feature for all websites that you open in Safari. Here are the steps to do so on an iPhone or iPad:

  • Go to Settings and open Safari .
  • Scroll down and select Reader under Settings for Websites .
  • Turn on the toggle for Other Websites .

Follow these steps to allow all websites to open with Reader View on your Mac:

  • Control-click the Reader View button and select Reader Website Preferences from the popup.
  • At the bottom of the popup panel, click the dropdown box for When visiting other websites and choose On.

Enjoy Clutter-Free Reading in Safari

Reader View in Safari is the perfect way to do some reading without any distractions. Only relevant text and images will remain on your screen, and all other ads will be removed.

You can adjust the font size, style, and background color with this feature, too. Even better, you can automatically open specific websites, or all of them, in Reader View when you want to.

How to Use Safari Reader View for Mac

If you love reading our tips directly from our website on your Mac, or if you love reading articles around the web in general, you should try using Safari's Reader mode. Reader not only hides ads but also allows for a much cleaner, streamlined version of websites that feels more like a magazine than the internet. Here's how it works!

Why You'll Love This Tip

  • Eliminate unwanted ads, sidebars, and other distracting widgets from websites by using Reader on the Safari browser.
  • Make reading articles on the web with your Mac look and feel much more like reading a book or a magazine.

Not all pages on all websites are compatible with Reader. You must navigate to an article, as opposed to a shopping website, in order to be given the option to switch to Reader.

How to Read Aloud a Webpage on Safari on iPhone

safari screen reader mac

Supreeth is passionate about technology and dedicates himself to helping people figure it out. An engineer by education, his understanding of the inner workings of each device is what ensures he provides top-quality assistance, tips, and recommendations. When away from the desk, you will find him traveling, playing FIFA, or hunting for a good movie.

We all have varied preferences for consuming content. For example, some prefer to sit back and listen to podcasts and audiobooks while not being the biggest fans of reading long, text-heavy articles. Thankfully, your iPhone has you covered. Here’s how to use the Listen to Page feature in Safari to make it read a webpage aloud for you!

Read Aloud a Webpage Safari

The feature is a recent addition to Safari on iPhone as a part of the iOS 17 update . However, even if you are using an older iPhone that does not run iOS 17, there’s an alternative feature that lets you listen to a web page in Safari. In this article, we want to show you how to use these features; let’s begin.

What Is the Listen to Page Feature in iOS 17

The ‘Listen to Page’ feature lets Safari read aloud a webpage and all of its text contents. It was introduced recently with the iOS 17 update and works on blogs, articles, and other text-heavy web pages in Safari.

It supports webpages in all languages supported by Siri. Further, you can also control playback by increasing the speed of the audio output, and you can go forward or back by ten seconds. We’ll show you how to do it in the following section.

Make Safari Read Text Out Loud on iOS 17

Here’s how to use the Listen to Page feature to let Safari read text aloud from webpages.

Step 1: Open Safari and open the article or blog you want to listen to.

Step 2: Tap on the Aa icon in the toolbar.

Step 3: Tap on Listen to Page.

Open Safari

The audio playback will begin, and Safari will read aloud the article for you. Now, let’s figure out how to control the audio playback.

Control the Audio Playback

You only get the bare minimum audio playback controls. However, the essentials are covered. You can tap on the loudspeaker icon, select Speaking rate, and change the speed of the audio playback.

Speaking Rate

You can also go back or forward 10 seconds in the audio playback.

Playback Controls Listen to Page

Additionally, the playback controls are also available on the lock screen. Interestingly, the widget on the lock screen also shows the time left in the audio narration.

How to Change Listen to Page Language on Safari

If you see an article you want to listen to in Safari that isn’t written in the default language of your iPhone, you may notice that the ‘Listen to Page’ option will be greyed out. Hence, you must change that language in Siri to enable the option. Here’s how:

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Tap on ‘Siri & Search’.

Open Settings app

Step 3: Tap on Language.

Step 4: Select the language in the article to listen to in Safari.

Tap on Language 1

Additionally, you can also change the voice/accent of the narration language. For example, I can change the English narration accent by changing the Siri Voice settings.

Tap on Siri Voice 1

That is everything you need to know about the ‘Listen to Page’ feature on iOS 17 . If you are using an older iPhone that isn’t running iOS 17, you can use the similar ‘Speak Screen’ feature.

Use Speak Screen to Read Webpage Aloud on iPhone

Your iPhone has an accessibility feature called Speak Screen that narrates all the text on-screen. However, it isn’t as refined as the ‘Listen to Page’ feature, designed specifically to narrate the necessary content on a webpage. The Speak Screen proceeds to read all the text on the screen, including the ones that aren’t necessary, like ad banners on the webpage.

But you get a good number of options to control the audio output. Let’s explore all of them.

Step 1: Open the Settings app and select Accessibility.

Step 2: Tap on Spoken Content.

Open Accessibility

Step 3: Turn on the toggle for Speak Screen.

Step 4: Go back to Safari and swipe down with two fingers from the top of your iPhone. This will enable the speak screen.

Now, your iPhone will narrate the website contents whenever you open it on Safari.

Turn On Toggle for Speak Screen

Step 5: Tap on the speech controller floating button. Here, you’ll find all the options to control playback.

  • Select Section to Narrate: Once you tap on this button, select the specific area of the screen to be narrated. Enable this option, and tap on the area you want narrated.
  • Previous : This lets you go back to the narration of the previous section of the text.
  • Play/Pause: This lets you play or pause the narration.
  • Next: This lets you go to the narration of the next section of the text.
  • Change Narration Speed: This lets you change the speed of text narration.
  • Close Speak Screen: This will close and turn off the Speak Screen feature.

Tap on Listening Controls for Speak Screen

FAQs About ‘Listen to Page’ on Safari

The feature only works on websites with consistent paragraphs of text content. Further, the option will be greyed out if the content on the website is different from the Siri language.

Yes, if you can load the website offline, you can use the ‘Listen to Page’ feature in Safari.

Check your internet connectivity and restart your iPhone to fix the issue.

You can tap on the ‘Aa’ button > Listening Controls > End Listening to stop the narration.

Get iPhone to Read Webpages

We hope this article helps you listen to websites on Safari with ease. However, we wish Apple added more playback controls to this feature. But we like how the voice does not seem as robotic as the traditional text-to-speech style. Further, with Apple rumored to be working on a large language model, we can expect significant enhancement of features like these with forthcoming updates.

Apple to unveil AI-enabled Safari browser alongside new operating systems

Marko Zivkovic's Avatar

Safari getting new AI tools in iOS 18

safari screen reader mac

The software — expected to debut as Safari 18 later in 2024 — is currently undergoing evaluation alongside internal builds of Apple's next-generation operating system updates, namely iOS 18 and macOS 15, according to people familiar with the matter. Should all of the new features make it to the release candidate stage, users will be treated to a new user interface (UI) for customizing popular page controls, a "Web eraser" feature, and AI-driven content summarization tools.

Intelligent Search - AI-enhanced browsing and text summarization

Engineers evaluating the latest builds of Safari 18 can find a toggle for the new page controls menu within the browser's address bar. The menu consolidates — and provides quick access to — old and new page control tools, among them being the browsers new "Intelligent Search" feature.

A screenshot of Arc Search on iPhone with a summary of an article from AppleInsider

This feature is not automatically enabled in test builds of Safari 18 and instead requires manual activation from the page controls menu. Once enabled, it's believed the tool leverages Apple's on-device AI technology — specifically the Ajax language-learning model — to identify topics and key phrases within a webpage for which to base the summarization.

In selecting key phrases, the Apple's LLM software identifies sentences that provide explanations or describe the structure of objects, depending on the text in question. Words repeated within a text and key sentences are recognized as text topics.

These early indications suggest Apple is striving to deliver text summarization alongside Safari 18 later this year, though the exact implementation of this feature remains fuzzy.

Apple's text summarization features could be a response to rival generative AI tools, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. But Apple's on-device models and technologies like Private Relay could make the experience much more secure for users. Intelligent Search is also likely to be the same AI browser assistant that one X user hinted at a couple of weeks back.

Web Eraser for better content-blocking

Also accessible from the new page controls menu is a feature Apple is testing called "Web Eraser." As its name would imply, it's designed to allow users to remove, or erase, specific portions of web pages, according to people familiar with the feature.

The feature is expected to build upon existing privacy features within Safari and will allow users to erase unwanted content from any webpage of their choosing. Users will have the option to erase banner ads, images, text or even entire page sections, all with relative ease.

A screenshot of 1Blocker's element blocking feature that removes selected parts of a webpage

The erasure is said to be persistent, rather than limited to a browsing session. This means that Safari will remember the changes even after the original tab or window has been closed.

When visiting a web page with previously erased content, Safari will inform the user that the page has been modified to reflect their desired changes. The browser will also give the user the option to revert changes and restore the webpage to its initial, unaltered state.

As for where Apple got the inspiration for Web Eraser, the company could have Sherlocked the feature from the third-party app 1Blocker. The application features a similar way of erasing ads, where users would tap ads to make them disappear.

Updated UI will move key tools into one easy location

The new page controls menu referenced throughout this article will attempt to offer Safari 18 users quick and easy access to several options previously located across different menus and the Share Sheet. Running on pre-release versions of macOS 15, for instance, the menu also "pulls in the Aa" menu common on existing iPadOS versions of the browser. These include zoom options, webpage settings for privacy controls, content blocking options, extension shortcuts, and access to the new AI and erasure tools.

A mockup image of desktop Safari with an iPad-like menu that includes AI and erase features.

These various options existed previously on macOS, but were found by navigating through the Safari settings menu. Having all of these controls in one central location in the Address Bar will make these options more discoverable for end users. Other options like on-page text search and reader mode are also in this menu.

This all suggests Apple intends to unite the iPadOS and macOS Safari UI paradigms when it unveils its new OS releases during its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

AI-enhanced Visual Lookup feature could be available in 2025

Simultaneously, Apple is also working on a much more powerful visual search feature scheduled for integration sometime in 2025 that will allow users obtain information on consumer products when browsing through images. People familiar with the tool say it's similar to the Visual Lookup feature, through which Siri can identify plants, pets and landmarks from photos.

An image of a black cat with big yellow eyes in Apple Photos with text below classifying it as a 'bombay'

Visual Search could be implemented as a system-wide feature. So, instead of surfacing search results in the Photos app, the user may be able to use Visual Search directly in Safari by selecting an image.

Given development of this tool is in the earlier stages, it remains unclear how Apple will ultimately go about implementing it. It also remains to be seen whether or not the feature will make it through internal testing.

The iPhone maker has expressed significant interest in artificial intelligence and more recently published research related to on-device language learning models. This goes hand in hand with widespread rumors about several other AI-powered software features, many of which are expected to make their debut later this year with iOS 18.

Another big year for Safari

From its inception, Safari was always meant to rival existing web browsers.

A Flickr login screen with password auto fill shown as a pop-up

Safari was originally added to macOS as a means of replacing Microsoft's Internet Explorer for Mac, which was the default browser. Over the years, the app made its way to the iPhone , and has since received various upgrades over the years.

More recent versions of Safari provide users with personalized web suggestions, and allow for greater privacy protection with features such as iCloud Private Relay.

This latest set of enhancements only serves to better position Safari against the competition, in an ever-increasing landscape of generative AI tools and third-party ad-blockers.

While Apple tests many such features during different development stages, it is important to remember that not all of them make it to release. Apple has been known to delay features or cancel them entirely, so there's always a chance we may not see these new Safari features after all.

Along with Safari 18 and its associated improvements, we should also see a revamped Calculator with Math Notes make its way to iPadOS 18. Freeform Scenes and Adaptive Voice Shortcuts are new OS features, which are also expected to debut later this year.

Apple is expected to introduce various AI-related enhancements as part of iOS 18 and macOS 15, both of which should be announced at the company's annual WWDC on June 10.

As long as I can turn it off/hide it they can knock themselves out.

Will the web eraser feature remove pop up videos, such as the ones that appear on this site?

I use the 'Reader' function in Safari quite a bit, but sometimes it doesn't work very well. Seems like something that AI could help make better.

Web ads suck but how else do you think your favorite websites will stay in business? Are you prepared to pay a subscription to every site? I doubt it…

Apple's Safari browser will get an AI makeover this year

Apple Web browsers Mobile software Rumors

Apple's getting ready to overuse the AI buzzword just like everyone else has been doing for a while, and the big AI push is also coming this year to Safari, the company's web browser, according to a new report.

The next version of Safari will be AI-infused, and it's expected to launch alongside iOS 18 , which means it will most likely be presented at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June .

Apple's Safari browser will get an AI makeover this year

Safari will get Intelligent Search, which will leverage on-device AI to identify topics and key phrases within a web page you're looking at in order to summarize its contents for you. Apple's large language model (LLM) will identify sentences that provide explanations or describe the structure of objects, depending on the text on the page, and words which are repeated and key sentences will be recognized as topics.

This is said to come in response to (what else?) ChatGPT but of course Apple will deliver its usual twist in that the experience, being on-device, will be much more secure.

Web Eraser will let you remove specific portions of web pages - things like banner ads, images, text, or even entire page sections, with "relative ease". The erasure will be persistent across sessions too, as Safari will remember the changes even after you close the original tab or window.

Apple's Safari browser will get an AI makeover this year

When you visit the same page again you'll be informed that the page has been modified to reflect your desired changes, and you'll then get an option to revert changes and restore the webpage to its unalerted state if you want.

This sounds a lot like an overcomplicated way to create an ad blocker and use the AI buzzword for that, but ad blockers also do exist, and have predated all these AI shenanigans, so we're not sure what to make of this.

The new Safari will also come with an updated UI, with a new page controls menu giving you easy access to a lot of options that were previously scattered across the UI. Aside from the aforementioned Intelligent Search / Intelligent Browsing and Erase Web Content, this will house other stuff like zoom options, privacy controls, content blocking options, in-page text search, reader mode, and extension shortcuts.

Apple's Safari browser will get an AI makeover this year

Next year, Apple will integrate a "much more powerful visual search feature" into its browser that will let you "obtain information on consumer products when browsing through images". This is apparently similar to the Visual Lookup feature which lets Siri identify plants, pets, and landmarks in photos.

Apple's Safari browser will get an AI makeover this year

While all of these things are purportedly already in development, keep in mind that it's not impossible for Apple to delay their launch or cancel some altogether - things that have all happened before.

Web Eraser actually seems pretty useful if you don't like ad banners popping up all the time. Kind of like uBlock's element picker mode.

What about adblocker? Oh forgot its an iOS simply works.

Pretty uninspired use of AI tbh. Most, if not all of those functions already have alternatives.

How to have siri read articles to you on your mac.

Don't want to read a long article or research paper on your Mac? Give your eyes a rest and let Siri read the text to you!

Quick Links

How to enable the text-to-speech feature, how to use the text-to-speech feature to read articles aloud.

Siri can read any text aloud to you on your Mac. You can even use its built-in accessibility feature to listen to articles instead of reading them. Here's how to enable the feature and launch it using a keyboard shortcut.

First, let's enable the text-to-speech feature from preferences. To turn it on, click on the "Apple" icon from the menu bar and select "System Preferences."

From here, click on the "Accessibility" button.

From here, select "Speech" from the sidebar. Next, click on the checkmark next to "Speak Selected Text When the Key Is Pressed."

From this page, you can also click on the drop-down menu next to "System Voice" to change the voice of the speaker. Use the "Speaking Rate" slider to slow down or increase the speed of the speech.

By default, the keyboard shortcut for the accessibility feature is set to "Option+Esc." If that doesn't work for you, you can click on the "Change Key" button to set a new keyboard shortcut.

Now that the text-to-speech feature is active, go to your browser and open the article you want to read.

To simplify this process, we will use the Reader Mode in Safari, which strips the website of all formatting and presents only the article text. Firefox has a similar feature called Reader View. The Reader View extension brings the same functionality to Google Chrome.

In Safari, click on the "Reader Mode" icon from the left edge of the URL bar to enable the Reader Mode (the process will be different in Firefox and Chrome).

Instantly, all the formatting from the page will be removed, and you'll see only the article text and the essential images in a beautiful, easy-to-read format.

Hit "Command+A" to select all text.

Now that all the text is selected, hit "Option+Esc" (or whatever you might have changed it to) to start the text-to-speech feature. Your Mac will start reading the article to you until it's finished.

You can now reduce the brightness of your Mac's screen or turn away to do something else while listening to the article. If you want to stop at any time, hit the same keyboard shortcut again.

You can also use the Speak Screen feature on your iPhone or iPad to listen to articles on the go.

Iphone web browser choice gets one thing right, two things wrong, say developers.

Avatar for Ben Lovejoy

Being prompted to make an iPhone web browser choice in Europe has seen an uptick in the use of third-party apps , but not everyone is happy about it.

The EU itself is investigating whether Apple’s implementation of the antitrust requirement goes far enough, and developers of third-party browsers say the process gets one thing right, and two things wrong …

iPhone web browser choice

While iPhone owners have been theoretically able to choose their preferred web browser since iOS 14, it wasn’t much of a choice, for a couple of reasons.

First, most people didn’t even know they could choose an alternative browser. The default is Safari, and you’d have to proactively install a third-party one and then manually set it as your default.

Second, Apple insisted that all browsers had to use its own WebKit API. That ensured that competing browsers couldn’t do anything to impact security of privacy, but it also meant that they couldn’t offer faster speeds, or features not available in Safari.

The EU required Apple to drop the WebKit requirement, and also to proactively present users with a choice of browser when they first use their device. These changes were introduced in iOS 17.4 , and only apply within EU countries.

Apple gets one thing right

Developers of third-party web browsers have seen an increase in usage following the implementation of the changes, and they say Apple did play fair in one important respect: browsers are listed in random order, and Safari doesn’t get any special position or prominence in the list.

But two things remain unfair, they say

Wired spoke to a number of developers of alternative iPhone web browsers, and found that they had two criticisms.

First, iPhone owners are not asked to make their choice during the initial iPhone setup process. Instead, they are only presented with the choice when they first open the Safari app. This means that Safari has already presented itself as the default.

“It starts from you clicking Safari,” says Jon von Tetzchner, CEO and cofounder of Vivaldi. “Which, I think all of us agree, that’s the wrong spot.” Tetzchner said he prefers Google’s implementation of its new browser choice screen that guides Android users to select a default while setting up their phone.

Second, users are given zero information about each browser – just a list of names, many of which will be unfamiliar to non-techy users. That reinforces the idea that they should select Safari unless they already know a reason to make a different choice.

“Giving people information about the choice, and also information about what they’re choosing is really, really important,” says Kush Amlani, a global competition and regulatory counsel at Mozilla, which makes the Firefox browser.

A fairer option would be to give each developer a few words to pitch their browser. DuckDuckGo, for example, might have something like “Uses our privacy-first search engine, which doesn’t track you or filter your results.”

We’ll need to wait for the EU’s conclusion to determine what changes might be needed to comply with the law.

Why Apple’s iPhone Browser-Choice Option Sucks

iPhone displaying a list of internet browser apps

You just bought a new iPhone in Europe and finished setting it up. You’re excited to start planning a much-needed vacation, so you tap on the Safari browser to search for upcoming flights. Oh, you suddenly see a pop-up asking you to choose a default browser. You quickly scan the list of options, only recognizing one or two, then decide to keep Safari and move on with your hunt for travel deals.

With the iOS 17.4 update , Apple now includes a default browser selection pop-up screen for European iPhone users. It’s part of the company’s response to the Digital Markets Act , which EU lawmakers enacted earlier this year to encourage competition on the internet. (The browser choice screen is not currently rolling out to iPhones in the United States.) While browser choice screens are, in theory, meant to level the playing field in markets dominated by a handful of gatekeepers , their effectiveness is determined by the quality of the user experience.

Many of the competitors appearing on Apple’s browser choice screen are dissatisfied with how it’s been implemented in European markets. Brendan Eich, CEO and cofounder of Brave , compared powerful companies that control the defaults on smartphones to street magicians who fan out cards to pick from but hustle you by forcing a specific card to the top of the deck.

An Apple spokesperson requested to speak off the record about browser choice screens. When WIRED declined and asked for an on-the-record comment, all further requests for an interview went unanswered.

Whenever someone updates their software to iOS 17.4 in Europe, they may see the browser choice pop-up the first time they tap on the Safari browser. After a short introductory screen about the default browser choice, a list of 12 browser options are displayed in a random order. The browsers that appear on the list vary slightly by country. Safari is automatically included, and the 11 other picks are browsers with the most iPhone downloads in a particular country that also adhere to Apple’s configuration requirements for defaults.

“It starts from you clicking Safari,” says Jon von Tetzchner, CEO and cofounder of Vivaldi . “Which, I think all of us agree, that’s the wrong spot.” Tetzchner said he prefers Google’s implementation of its new browser choice screen that guides Android users to select a default while setting up their phone.

Google actually has some experience implementing a choice screen to appease European regulators. When it was forced to add a search engine default selector to Android in 2019, many of the developers behind alternative options initially criticized the design and denounced Google’s practice of selling slots on the screen through auctions. The company responded by rolling out an updated pop-up without slot auctions in 2021. Google did not respond to multiple requests for comment on this story.

The slow speed of enforcement from European regulation means any changes mandated by lawmakers only arrive after a drawn-out process. “Google had implicit permission to implement a bad version of it and run out the clock. In the process, it makes the entire remedy of a choice screen look bad,” says Kamyl Bazbaz, a vice president of public affairs for DuckDuckGo . “If you can only judge the effectiveness of a thing based on a bad version of it, you're gonna think it sucks.”

A few representatives from smaller browser companies also expressed that they wanted more information included with Apple’s choice process, like definitions of what a browser is for less tech-savvy users and descriptions of the different browsers’ specialties. “Giving people information about the choice, and also information about what they're choosing is really, really important,” says Kush Amlani, a global competition and regulatory counsel at Mozilla , which makes the Firefox browser.

Sophie Dembinski, a head of public policy and climate action at Ecosia , mentioned how Apple’s pop-up appears for all iPhone users even if they’ve already gone into their phone’s settings and set an alternative browser as their default. In comparison, Google’s browser choice screen for Android users won’t show up if you’ve already gone through the steps of setting a preference for a third-party option.

While many developers are unhappy with Apple’s implementation, not every company with a browser on the choice screen expressed frustration. “We believe that Apple's approach to presenting the browser choice screen is fair and acceptable,” says Andrew Moroz Frost, the Aloha Browser founder. He pointed out the randomized order of the browsers shown on the pop-up as one example of Apple designing it in a fair manner.

Richard Socher, the founder and CEO of You.com , seemed more encouraged by there being a browser choice screen that includes the search-focused startup rather than frustrated by Apple’s implementation. “I think it’s great that there’s not the default already preselected,” he says. Socher highlighted the randomized order as a positive sign as well.

Is this choice screen a true turning point for alternative browsers to grow their user base? “We’re expecting to have a clear picture on user uplift within months, not weeks,” says Dembinski. While some browsers reported initial upticks in downloads , it still seems too soon to make sweeping generalizations about the long-term efficacy of Apple’s choice screen.

“We would like to encourage platform providers to also level out the playing field for app developers around the world, not just in the EU,” says Jan Standal, a vice president of product marketing at Opera . Some of the companies WIRED spoke with remain hopeful that the precedent of browser choice screens set by the DMA will inspire international software changes.

Shortly after Apple’s choice screen launched, the European Commision announced that the screen would be part of its wider investigation into how Apple, Google, and Meta might be breaking these updated regulations: “The Commission is concerned that Apple's measures, including the design of the web browser choice screen, may be preventing users from truly exercising their choice of services within the Apple ecosystem, in contravention of Article 6(3) of the DMA.” In keeping with its slow-moving tradition, this investigation may take up to a year to complete.

Melissa McCarthy green dress, adam shankman pink suit, at the Center Theatre Group Hosts CTG The Gala 2024 at The Ahmanson Theatre on April 28 in Los Angeles

Melissa McCarthy attended the Center Theatre Group Hosts CTG the Gala on Monday in Los Angeles. The Oscar-nominated actress was joined by friend and director Adam Shankman.

For the occasion, McCarthy embraced springtime pastels and tulle, fashioning a look by Mac Duggal. The tiered, strapless A-line dress featured layers of tulle ruching in a soft seafoam green hue. McCarthy kept her look monochrome, wearing a similarly colored blazer over her dress.

McCarthy previously wore a design by Mac Duggal for the PGA Awards in February, fashioning a metallic purple gown with a pleated floor-length skirt and long sleeves. She was styled by Katja Cahill for the event.

McCarthy’s latest look is a true color contrast to another recent ensemble. At the opening night of the new Broadway musical “Suffs” on April 18, McCarthy wore an all-black look with coordinated blazer and pants and a sheer mock-neck long-sleeve top. The subdued outfit was the ideal canvas for her statement accessory.

The actress wore a pair of Tender and Dangerous nude embroidered gloves adorned with the phrases “Can ladies kill?” along the front and “Kiss here” up the middle finger, as well as images of knives, cigarettes and diamonds. Along with these past two looks, McCarthy has also worn pieces by Christian Siriano, Valdrin Sahiti and more in 2024.

The Center Theatre Group is a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles. With theaters including the Ahmanson, Taper and Douglas, the Center Theatre Group helms educational programs and artistic initiatives to cultivate a community exposed to theater.

This Mac app is essential if you read a lot of PDFs

If you read a lot of PDFs for research, you need Highlights.

Back in 2020 I wrote a book that involved huge amounts of research. It was during the first lockdown so this research didn't look like trips to a library or in-person interviews. Instead, it was all conducted via the internet and many, many copies of surveys, studies and research papers.

The majority of these documents were PDFs and I found them really difficult to markup and organize. I only wish I had discovered Highlights back then, an app that works on your iPhone and iPad, but I highly recommend using it on your Mac for the best reading experience.

The Highlights app does a lot of things, but one of the simplest and yet most useful features is that you can use it to highlight and markup any text and images in a PDF that are then formatted into notes on the fly. It can also extract notes from any existing PDFs as soon as you open them up. Research tasks are about to get a whole lot more straightforward.

Make PDF research quicker and easier

When you open Highlights, you'll see a toolbar — this is the main hub of the app. It contains thumbnails to documents, annotation and markup tools and notes, all in one place. This enables you to really quickly and easily move between different documents and all of the notes you've been making across them.

It's very easy to annotate a PDF, just drag your pointer or finger over the bit you want to markup and a pop-up appears that allows you to copy, underline, highlight and lookup text or add it to a note. Highlights also works with images and is optimized for scientific research, so that includes graphs, charts and any other sorts of diagrams too, all of which can be added to a note along with text.

Once you've created lots of notes from your PDFs you can export them anywhere as PDF files themselves. If you get the Highlights Pro version you can export notes in editable formats too, like Markdown and HTML. The Pro app costs $3.99/£3.99 monthly and $29.99/£29.99 a year and comes with more extra features, like custom default colors for different annotation tools and integration with reference managers.

If you're doing a lot of research and writing it up for a paper, a study, a book or anything else, I'd also recommend checking out some of the best comprehensive writing apps. My favorite, and the one I used to write my book is Scrivener .

Apple WWDC 2024 updates: iOS 18 to get major overhaul with advanced Siri, AI-driven features and more, suggests Gurman

Ios 18 is expected to be unveiled at wwdc 2024, promising significant changes focusing on ai-driven features. notable updates could include redesigned iphone apps, siri enhancements, improved home screen customization, rcs messaging, and ai-powered safari..

For representation purposes only.

As Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference approaches, all eyes are on the rumored significant changes coming with the iOS 18 update. Set for June 2024, WWDC is expected to unveil a major overhaul of the iPhone operating system, centered on artificial intelligence and a suite of new software features.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman , who provides insights into Apple's plans, iOS 18 will see a complete redesign of several popular built-in iPhone apps, including Photos, Mail, Notes, and Fitness. Notably, the Calculator app will gain additional features and make its debut on the iPad, offering a much-anticipated update for iPad users.

The insights from Gurman indicate that iOS 18 might be Apple's most significant iPhone update yet, featuring a range of AI-driven enhancements. Among these new features are automatically created playlists on Apple Music and AI-based writing support in Pages and Keynote. A distinguishing factor is Apple's focus on running AI tasks directly on the iPhone, reducing dependence on cloud servers, though some high-end features could be exclusive to the latest iPhone 16 models.

Siri, Apple's virtual assistant, is also in line for a significant upgrade with AI advancements. Users can expect more natural conversations with Siri , enhanced Spotlight search, and improved Shortcuts automation. Apple's approach to AI technology could involve its proprietary large language model or collaboration with other major players like Google or OpenAI.

One of the most anticipated features in iOS 18 is a new way to customize the Home Screen. Users might soon be able to place app icons wherever they choose, allowing for blank spaces, custom rows or columns, and a more flexible iPhone layout. This could be a welcome change for those seeking a more personalized smartphone experience.

Another potential update in iOS 18 is the adoption of the RCS messaging standard, bridging the communication gap between iPhone and Android users. RCS messaging offers enhanced features such as high-resolution photo sharing, improved group chats, and read receipts across platforms.

Safari, Apple's browser, could also see AI-powered improvements, potentially incorporating a browsing assistant similar to existing tools in other browsers. The Calculator app is set for a revamp, featuring a history bar for past calculations and enhanced unit conversion tools. Meanwhile, the Notes app could soon support complex mathematical equations, catering to students and professionals alike.

Apple Maps is poised for enhancement, with new topographic maps that include elevation data and marked trails. This could be a significant addition for outdoor enthusiasts and hikers.

Lastly, iOS 18 may bring a "hearing aid mode" to AirPods Pro , potentially building on the existing Conversation Boost feature. Additional updates are expected for CarPlay, Freeform, and other applications. However, these details remain speculative until Apple's official announcement at WWDC 2024.

Early in 2015 the Drzewiecki Design studio released X-Plane's first Russian scenery in UUEE Sheremetyevo Airport XP. Personally I was very excited, in that of what X-Plane can do in allowing you to explore new frontiers, new countries, new areas. So a trip to Russia was going into another brand new frontier with finally with a quality payware scenery as a destination.

If any scenery shows the explosion of detail in X-Plane over the last five years it is UUEE - Sheremetyevo. That first review visit was really to an isolated scenery in a barren wilderness in more like Siberia than Moscow... read the full original review here to see huge differences between the original and current visual detail of UUEE Sheremetyevo Airport.

Airport Review : UUEE Sheremetyevo Airport XP by Drzewiecki Design

But remember that at the time it was pretty good...

UUEE Sheremetyevo Airport XP v2 So here is the upgrade (finally) to that release in the v2 X-Plane11 version of Sheremetyevo. The previous proclamation is in relation to the changes around this original scenery. Drzewiecki Design has been on a sort of mission statement to recreate Moscow in it's entirety. Their release of Moscow XP did a huge service in recreating a city out of nothing...   Scenery Review : Moscow City XP by Drzewiecki Design and another brilliant addition was JustSim's excellent UUWW - Moscow Vnukovo v1.2 which was constructed to fit within the same framework as DD's Moscow XP scenery, the funny thing was the only airport scenery that was now the odd one out was actually the older UUEE Sheremetyevo?

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_Head 1.jpg

The approach now to Sheremetyevo makes you shake your head, "oh wow" as this is so, so different from the original...

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_Head 5.jpg

If you have the Moscow XP scenery (highly recommended here) then the installer will fit in the new UUEE to merge perfectly with the city scenery... if you don't have it there is an option to blend into the standard default textures, but why not have the full Russian monty, it is excellent, but there is also a lot of objects now running in your system, so you will need at least a 8K graphic card to run the full Moscow layout.

Drzewiecki Design uses a .exe installer to install your Sheremetyevo, for Mac/Linux there is a manual .zip option, but the manual version is complicated in that you have to place certain files for certain options in there manually. And there are a lot of options...   there are three options on the style of the "Borders" or the way you want the scenery to fit into your current layout (i.e. with Moscow XP or not), second set of options that cover Static aircraft and Ground Photoreal textures, there is another option to use the volmetric 3d grass (recommended) and if you want the manual to appear when the install is done. All options with the installer can be changed by just running the installer again and selecting your new options, it works very well in changing around options quickly...

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_Install 2.jpg

.... the installer will also check if you have the SAM (Scenery Animation Manager) installed, which is required by the scenery, it did pick up I was a version out of date (I was away traveling) so I was impressed by that. Finally it will install the scenery into your custom scenery folder (on the fly as noted it asked me if I wanted it to install the correct textures for use with Moscow XP, again impressive). So you can see how hard it would be to set up manually, however there is full instructions in the manual for Mac/Linux users (note I am using the static off (WT3) and photoreal/grass on).

First new view of UUEE - Sheremetyevo shows a major airport change in a new runway 06L - 24R (there are a set of charts provided with the scenery)

UUEE_CHARTS.jpg

06L -24R is set a fair way from the terminal zones, I mean really far away from the southern Terminal D, E & F complexes to the south so expect a long taxi...

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_06L_24R 1.jpg

...    detail along side including a runway tower complex is excellent, in fact all detail around the airport is now highly elevated by a lot of local objects.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_06L_24R 4.jpg

Visually the surrounding areas around the airport are very realistic, note the Moscow City well into the background as the objects coverage over the whole area to the Moscow city centre, so the question has to asked is that if you have the full set of Moscow XP, UUWW Vnukovo and this scenery is then the question is of do you have the most detailed complete city layout in X-Plane? I personally now think so.

It is really very hard to imagine the basis of this version is still many the older objects, and yet that is the case but most have had attention, as this is now a far more comprehensive and dynamic scenery than before...

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE 1.jpg

...  to highlight this aspect are the new PBR (Physical Based Render) reflective runways, and in the right light they are excellent, add less light and wet conditions and they go mindblowing.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE 4.jpg

South Sheremetyevo

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE 17.jpg

The original iconic Sheremetyevo-2 Terminal now Terminal F looks now even better with PBR and reflective glass, although I see a few areas of marching ants on the windows in some lighting conditions.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE 7.jpg

The adjoining Terminal E has also had the reflective glass treatment, but also internal detail added, as usual it is quite basic, but it all looks good of where it counts in the external view. The internal detail is also on the futuristic Terminal D, this futuristic terminal looks so much better here, it was certainly well modeled originally, but the average surroundings didn't give it the attention it deserved.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE 13.jpg

Like the new runway, new infrastructure landside has also been included, including new hotels and administration buildings, so the scenery is now completely up to date in it's current form. The Park inn hotel has been remodeled, and is far better and not as gaudy as before and the Holiday Inn Express is all new and both are excellent.

A big feature now included is the SAM (Scenery Animation Manager) plugin for VGDS gate docking and remote parking and every airbridge is now active, that is EVERY airbridge at SVO.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_SAM 1.jpg

Approaching Terminal F is now a real occasion if an historic one as this terminal is steeped in history, to dock at the red airbridge just completes the Russian arrival.

North Sheremetyevo

If any area of Sheremetyevo that has had the most changes it is on the older north side.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE 18.jpg

Gone is the old iconic "Sheremetyevo-1" or the original first terminal built at Sheremetyevo in 1964 with it's unusual spaceship-like design, and it has been replaced with two new terminals in B and C. They have sort of done a modern glassed in replica design of the older terminal as part of terminal B, but in reality it is not the same as the iconic design.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE 19.jpg

The advantages however are that you get a lot more active gates to choose from and as you can't stop progress and passenger demand. It keeps Sheremetyevo as an active modern airport as well, and not sinking away into a relic of the past. But the differences here in facilities compared to only five years ago is quite comprehensive.

Nightlighting

The lighting of UUEE has had a full overhaul and "thank god for that".

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE lighting 1.jpg

Most of the original terminal night textures were just simply really "plain awful" and to the point I hit the Photoshop app to make them at least more realistic, mostly all the glaringly bad textures have banished to be replaced with the see-through glass lighting, but there are a few areas they still brightly protrude from.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE lighting 3.jpg

The worst offenders were the Terminal's D and E and thankfully both have had serious attention, D is nice now, and E is lovely on the landside arrival side. The hotels at night look excellent as well and very realistic...

Terminal F night texures are the same, but the new ramp lighting sorts of dilutes the age. But a bit more attention to detail here to make it blend in better would have helped.

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE lighting 7 LG.jpg

As 80% of the north Sheremetyevo is new then so is the lighting...

UUEE Sheremetyevo_v2_UUEE lighting 8.jpg

It looks great and very modern, and the ramps are well lit. The highlight is the control tower lighting which is very effective by the side of the older tower building. Control Tower view however is not set, but ground focused...  overall the lighting here at SVO is very good.

WT 3 : Any old ground routes don't work with the new runway layout, so they have to thrown away. The new generation is not bad and works but needs refinements in a few areas to make it perfect, but overall WT2 works very well and some approach views are excellent.

A note that the older waypoint issues have thankfully gone as well, having current or newer Navigraph data will fix all the old misalignment issues.

The first really good payware scenery for Moscow has had a complete refurbish. Originally the scenery was a speck in an area of X-Plane blandness, but not anymore. Now you have the extensive Moscow XP and JustSim's UUWW - Moscow Vnukovo to compliment this highly updated UUEE - Sheremetyevo and what a grand plan it all is now.

There has been a lot of changes at Sheremetyevo in the last few years, with a new runway 06L -24R  and most of north Sheremetyevo being totally rebuilt with two new terminals, and all the changes and a lot more of the new infrastructure is all in this scenery, so UUEE is totally up to date with the current conditions with this upgraded scenery. SAM animated airbridge plugin and dynamic PBR textures with 3d volumetric grass gives the scenery a huge dynamic lift as well as has most of the lighting also being thankfully redone. Full ground vehicle and radar animations are well done as well so this is now the full complete and highly optioned package of SVO.

Moscow as a destination city is one of the best served in X-Plane if you are willing to invest in all of the three principal sceneries of Drzewiecki Design's Moscow XP, JustSim's Moscow Vnukovo and now this totally updated Drzewiecki Design UUEE - Sheremetyevo, and the totally outstanding vista is married by some of the most sensational airport scenery with this Sheremetyevo now also a highly developed and usable scenery...  Only earlier that Sheremetyevo suddenly felt very dated, but now fits in beautifully with the the whole context of the scenery, yes you will need a bit of computer power to run the extreme amount of objects created here so a 8K Graphic Card is a must, other wise it is perfection...  a must have (all of it).

If you are at risk of voice loss or have a condition that can progressively impact your voice, Personal Voice can help. It’s a simple and secure way to create a voice that sounds like you. 1 Read through a series of randomly chosen text prompts to record 15 minutes of audio that can be used to generate a voice that sounds like you. 2 This feature uses on-device machine learning to keep your information private and secure. And Personal Voice seamlessly integrates with Live Speech, so you can type what you want to say and have your iPhone, iPad, or Mac speak it aloud in your Personal Voice.

Magnifier + point and speak.

Point to hear your way around.

safari screen reader mac

Magnifier works like a digital magnifying glass, using the camera on your iPhone or iPad to increase the size of anything you point it at — from a prescription bottle to a candlelit menu. For those who are blind or have low vision and want more information about their physical surroundings, Detection Mode in Magnifier combines input from the camera, LiDAR Scanner, and on-device machine learning to offer intelligent tools like People Detection, Door Detection, Image Descriptions, Text Detection, and Point and Speak. 4

If you’re standing in line, you can use People Detection to determine a person’s proximity to you. Door Detection can help you navigate by identifying doors, text, and the presence of symbols — such as a restroom symbol, a no smoking symbol, or an accessible-entrance symbol — within a few feet of you. Image Descriptions and Text Detection let you hear more about people, objects, landscapes, and text in your camera’s field of view. And Point and Speak makes it easier to interact with physical objects that have text, like household appliances, keypads, or labels on files. As you point and move your finger over or under different buttons or elements, your iPhone or iPad reads the text out loud, so you can perform everyday activities and tasks with more ease and independence. 5

Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 193 With Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements

Apple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview , the experimental browser Apple first introduced in March 2016. Apple designed the ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

Safari Technology Preview Feature

The current ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ release is compatible with machines running macOS Ventura and macOS Sonoma , the latest version of macOS that Apple released in September 2023.

The ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences or System Settings to anyone who has downloaded the browser . Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website .

Apple's aim with ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

I'm always curious about these Safari Tech Preview posts. Are they just a quick way to add another headline? I suspect so, as I don't see many people trusting these builds as their daily driver. I've tried that in the past, but it never stuck.
