Travel Guides Season 3: Melbourne newlyweds' best piece of travel advice for couples

By Katherine Scott | 5 years ago

Travel Guides ' newest participants, Melbourne-based Deepesh ('Dee') and Sage, may still be newlyweds (the duo tied the knot in 2017 after two years of dating), but they reckon they've got this whole travelling as a couple thing down pat.

Firstly, they have a designated 'planner'.

"Project management is my official profession but when it comes to travel, [Sage] is the planner," Dee tells 9Honey Travel.

"Oh, she plans everything to the tee! She matches every outfit of hers with her shoes and she packs five of hers and two of mine … I am impressed at her lists, her ticks and crosses"

Sage – who is also apparently the official 'navigator' – agrees with this assessment. " I cannot relax until the last hairpin and rubber band are packed … I have my yellow book and my trusted pen and off I go! I absolutely need my list, down to the minute details."

Secondly, they've mastered the art of the compromise (important).

"Generally, we travel really well together. We used to bicker over what and how to pack for the travel. Since then, we have made a pact, which means that he is not allowed to touch the bags anymore, except for lifting and weighing them," Sage says.

sage travel guides

Dee agrees it's far more peaceful now that she packs for the both of them.

"I just go with the flow and gloss over itineraries, dates and stuff but Sage is very particular about most things she does."

Lastly, they have the same unique travel style in common – you see, it seems the newlyweds' both share a rare appetite for adrenalin.

To give you an example, following their 2017 nuptials the couple embarked on an "adventurous honeymoon," travelling around New Zealand's South Island and partaking in thrill-seeking activities like bungee jumping and jet boating.

Ahead of the launch of this year's season of Travel Guides , the couple are hopeful Australia will see their "cheeky and funny side" throughout the series ("do not miss our 'Taiwan' episode").

But just don't expect smooth sailing all the way – the Indian-born Aussies may complement one another nicely, but they're the first to admit they're not immune to the odd on-the-road hiccup.

"I am very 'expressive' and sometimes outrageous when put in unusual travel situations. I am also a bit accident / incident prone ... makes for funny television moments," Sage teases.

For any couples considering the same journey, Sage had this advice: "Be yourself, be expressive; let yourself go. Try out anything new, awkward and exciting together and you will enjoy it even more. Remember that life is short. It is now or never."

He is one of the few people in the travel industry to have achieved IAAP’s  Certified Accessibility Professional  designation.

Our Experience

Seven keys to success in accessible travel.

  • Be Accessible – All trip components should have minimal accessibility barriers according to the seven principles of universal design.
  • Show Accessible – Clear, detailed, comprehensive accessibility information should be publicly available so disabled travelers can decide for themselves if their accessibility needs will be met.
  • Talk Accessible – Staff should receive role-specific training on how best to serve disabled customers.
  • Standardize Accessible – Accessibility features should meet international standards across products, across borders, and across the industry.
  • Lead Accessible – The leadership team should communicate an accessibility vision with near-term targets and adequate resources.
  • Involve Accessible – People with disabilities should be involved in decisions about accessibility.
  • Market Accessible – Marketing to disabled travelers should be active, welcoming, and targeted.

The booking process: Michael was very responsive and worked with us to tailor and adapt multi-day itinerary options. He was so patient with all our questions and took into account what might be best for three very different hiking abilities, including a ten-year-old. As we neared our first hike he touched base to firm up and share meeting details, dietary requirements and trail openings/closures. The tours: Michael did an incredible job of explaining and guiding us through various parts of Bryce Canyon, managed the pace well (we did a 7.5-mile hike), and had so much fun chatting with him. On the second day, we headed to Zion and did the Emerald Pool trail. Michael is very knowledgeable and shared a huge amount of information on the fauna and flora - pointing out plants and their uses. He also explained a great deal about the history and evolution of rock formations, pointing out details wherever possible. Lunches were perfect on both days, with a charcuterie board and wraps. We wish we had more time in South Utah to do more hikes with Michael as our guide. If you are headed this way and looking for premium-quality tours, get in touch with Cedar and Sage. Michael was amazing and led us through a gorgeous snowy hike at Bryce. He provided all of the gear and snapped great family pics. We spent a second day with him exploring Zion. He’s super knowledgeable about the area! He was sweet and funny and great with the kiddos (his snack collection is on point ☺️). We will definitely be back to hike The Narrows and will 100% book with Michael again. It was the highlight of our trip! Read more Written March 19, 2024

We met him right at the visitor center, which was packed already at 0645 and we changed our shoes and socks back at his car near the benches. He provided the socks, shoes and walking sticks, which were a life saver. He was patient with us guiding us through the best spots to walk. He took turns speaking with us individually (a few walked at a slower pace than others in our group). He constantly checked in on us and we were able to make it all the way back to see Wall Street. We opted to have lunch back at the visitor center so we could get out of the wet socks/shoes. The charcuterie board was delicious and much needed after the long hike. We went at the end of September and at the highest, the water level was only to our belly buttons (I'm 5'5"). We even saw deer and turkeys while riding the shuttle and having lunch. On the 40-minute ride back to the visitor center we all took a nap as we were exhausted. Michael was knowledgeable about the narrows, took amazing family photos for us and provided us with some recommendations on things to do in the area. I would definitely book this trip or another with Cedar & Sage Travel. Read more Written October 6, 2023

Zion National Park: Private Guided Hike & Picnic provided by Cedar & Sage Boutique Trekking

As part of an effort to raise awareness and funds for key conservation initiatives, and jointly offer unique passion projects from our design team to you, we are incredibly proud to introduce a special project that was born through the dedication and collaboration of our rod designers and some of the best saltwater guides in the world – SALT R8 TARPON ONE - an 8’10” one-piece limited-edition model of our acclaimed 11 weight SALT R8.

With a semi-mirrored and chrome-like finish, the all-new Flint colorway offers a modern take on two unique Sage reel chassis - the CLICK and TROUT. Inspired by the progressive feel of raw machined aluminum, Flint captures the essence of sophistication, precision, and craftsmanship found in these two iconic reel families.

The advanced, leading-edge material behind R8 enables us to shape a rod with a stiffer, stronger backbone but a more sensitive tip and more connected feel.

With our new R8 graphite, adding 25% more strength-per-weight was the easy part—a simple function of material advancement—but one that also increased the fight in the rod even down to our six-weight.

Be it Steelhead, Atlantic Salmon, King Salmon, or Sea-Run Brown Trout; Skagit, Scandi or Traditional lines; SPEY R8 rods capitalize on each cast, increasing the likelihood of the almighty moment that we all are devoted to. Introducing SPEY R8.

DEEPESH (41) & SAGE (39)

Loved-up Melbourne couple Deepesh and Sage met online four years ago through the dating site RSVP and married in 2017.

Both are Indian-born but now call Australia home. Deepesh is an IT manager at the Blood Bank and Sage is a childcare worker. They are highly educated, with seven degrees between them.

Deepesh and Sage are romantics still in the honeymoon phase of their relationship, which includes a healthy dose of good natured bickering.

Sage is the more volatile and passionate one, though also sensible and affectionate. Deepesh describes himself as the rock and calming influence in the relationship.

Deepesh is well travelled, while Sage has been to fewer countries. Eager to see the world together, they share a love of adrenaline activities and consider themselves to be quite adventurous. They’re avid photographers, oil painters, nature lovers, and as foodies, like nothing better than enjoying an exotic dish or three.

On overseas holidays Deepesh likes to learn key phrases in the local language and use them wherever he can. Sage is often embarrassed by her outgoing husband, but adores him nevertheless.

“Light Active” Tours

You don’t have to go on a “hike” to get your steps in, and sometimes a full day out in a city or exploring an archaeological site can be just as “active” as an organized walk. We’re also aware that we’re not as young as we once were, so we’re happy to offer tours that are…

What Our Customers Say

This Cuba tour was overflowing with music, art, dance, culture, and connecting with the Cuban people. And, of course, amazing, authentic food and Havana Club Rum. It didn't feel like a tour, but like a visit with family and friends. Claire and Manu put together a mix of experiences we won't soon forget and partnered with local guides to enhance our knowledge and understanding of the island and its culture. Both Claire and Manu are adept at "feeling out" the guests on the tour and make suggestions and adaptations that are like icing on top of the already incredible itinerary. This beautiful island came to life for us, and we are so lucky to be able to travel to Cuba now. Wild Sage provided us with a bucket-list experience, one that we won't forget, but might repeat!
While our time with Manu and Claire was part of a private departure, our travel included Florence, San Gimignano, Siena and Pienza. Traveling with Manu and Claire is, for us, traveling with trusted friends. This is our highest possible praise. Manu and Claire tend to all the details, provide the transportation, speak your language and Italian (along with other languages), share their knowledge of the places, the people, the food and the wine, expose you to new experiences, and accommodate your interests. They do all of this with efficiency and a smile. With guides like these, you are free to enjoy each moment and truly relax. The Wild Sage itineraries work perfectly for us. They include exercise, sightseeing, unique experiences, and time for relaxation and reflection. We found that every day included something memorable and special. Often these elements were part of Manu and Claire’s plan. At times they were unexpected and magical. Manu and Claire also worked with us to shape the travel itinerary we wanted for a private departure. With their help we were able to have exactly the trip we were hoping for, enhanced by their scouting, knowledge, and suggestions. We could ask for nothing more. We are already daydreaming about and planning our next adventure with Manu and Claire.
My wife and I took a 10 day trip to Sicily in March 2023 with Claire Duiker from Wild Sage as our guide. This was our first time in Sicily and the tour had a perfect combination of seeing much of what the large island has to offer and time to relax and enjoy our group. The itinerary combined time in the amazing coastal cities of Palermo and Siracusa and in the middle of the island near Agrigento and Vittoria. Claire organized everything very well, from hotel selections, restaurant choices, and visits to sites. With her deep knowledge of European history, she provided historical context covering the many layers of Sicily’s past as we moved around and visited sites but gave us space to explore things ourselves too. And she was extremely flexible – if our group wanted to alter the schedule some or stay a little longer (or shorter) somewhere, she was always responsive to impromptu changes. I don’t like to move from hotel to hotel so much when I’m travelling so our itinerary was great in that regard: 2 or 3 nights in each location gave us a chance to unwind and enjoy the location without always worrying about packing and getting out the next morning. Claire is fluent in Italian and English, and it probably isn’t always easy to be working around the clock, including dinners out with your “customers”, but she is fun to be with socially and made it seem easy. I enthusiastically recommend Wild Sage and Claire as a guide for this trip or others. If Sicily, make your trip as long as you can- there’s a lot to see. JAM, California, U.S.
We just completed this amazing trip with Claire and her local tour expert in Greece and the Islands. We LOVE putting ourselves in Claire's hands because we know (having enjoyed an amazing tour in Italy with her years ago) that she scouts all the best untouristed hotels and restaurants for amazing beach locations with easy access to towns and the most amazing culinary experiences (indulging us in a dessert specialty and bakery treat every so often). Her hiking, kayaking, and sailing excursions are nothing short of spectacular fun. Claire's hunt for historical and scenic adventure (not to mention her professionalism and ongoing friendship) is what is going to set the Wild Sage experience above other travel companies. I can't wait to schedule our next trip--THANK YOU!
This is a great trip. We visited archeological sites of the Nuragic people, a sacred well, a burial tomb, including a tour of one of their villages. The guide explained what is currently known about the ancient civilization which was fascinating and frustrating because there is still so much about them that is unknown. We visited museums which have Nuragic bronzes and stone giants. We hiked through the countryside with panoramic views of coastlines, valleys, and mountains and sightings of a range of wildlife including the last wild horse herd in Europe. Six hundred horses in family groups of 30-40. There were so many wonderful things about this trip: the city guide who spoke a few lines of the native Sardinian language for us and answered all my questions about the language, the guide at the vineyard who was enthusiastic about his job, the park guide who showed us the wild horses, the beautiful beaches where we relaxed and all the Sardinians we met. The food, wine, and hikes were amazing. A huge grazie mille to Manu and Wild Sage for putting this trip together to this wonderful island.

Accessibility

' src=

Accessibility is the practice of making products, services, and environments available to all people, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities. This includes people with disabilities, as well as those without, and covers a wide range of areas, from physical access to information access.

Accessibility is important because people with disabilities or other impairments are often excluded from various aspects of society. This can include access to public facilities, information, or services that everyone else may take for granted. Additionally, the lack of accessibility can limit opportunities for people with disabilities, making it harder for them to find jobs, get an education, and participate in the community.

Accessibility helps ensure that everyone is given the same opportunities to participate in their community and experience the same level of quality of life. It is also a civil right that allows all individuals to be included and have equal access to services, products, and facilities.

So today, as part of our ongoing series on accessibility, we were lucky enough to interview John Sage of New Braunfels, Texas.

He is CEO of three prominent companies in the accessibility and inclusive travel industry: Sage Traveling , Accessible Travel Solutions, and Sage Inclusion .

Nice to meet you John! Tell us how you got started in this field.

My journey in this position began by recognizing the need for accessible travel experiences. With a passion for ensuring equal opportunities for all, I embarked on a mission to create innovative solutions. This drive led me to establish Sage Traveling, Accessible Travel Solutions, and Sage Inclusion each dedicated to addressing the unique challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. In my role as CEO, I oversee the operations of all three companies. Sage Traveling specializes in planning trips for people with disabilities, ensuring their needs are met at every stage of the journey. Sage Inclusion offers training, certification, and cutting-edge technology to enhance accessibility in the travel industry.

Additionally, we have collaborated with destinations like Dubai, Santa Barbara, and Galveston to create inclusive travel experiences. Our expertise has been recognized by Virtuoso, a leading luxury travel network, further affirming our commitment to excellence.

Can you describe what, exactly, you do for these clients?

Sage’s Mission is to Make Travel Easier for People of All Abilities | Photo Source: John Sage

What are some of the hidden issues you deal with that the general public might not consider?

There are several accessibility issues that often go unnoticed by the general public. We work closely with companies and government entities to address these concerns. Our approach involves providing accessibility training to staff members and documenting accessibility, thereby creating a more inclusive environment for all travelers. Through our work, we have shed light on areas that are often overlooked. For example, the location of lamp switches can be crucial for individuals with mobility challenges. The training for shower chairs and handheld shower nozzles can significantly enhance the bathing experience for people with disabilities. These details are essential in creating truly accessible travel experiences.

Do you have a mission statement or guiding principle for your work?

Our mission is to make travel easier for people of all abilities. We strive to break down barriers, promote inclusivity, and ensure that every individual has equal opportunities to explore and enjoy the world. Our commitment lies in providing accessible and inclusive travel solutions that empower and inspire. Companies, government agencies, and nonprofits should be asking themselves how the travel experience differs for individuals with disabilities and whether it is equitable. Considering these questions can foster a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by people with disabilities and pave the way for meaningful improvements.

Taking the train in Ireland – what you need to know

Apr 19, 2024 • 11 min read

Iranrod Eireann. Rosslare to Dublin line. Woodenbridge golf course

A train travels along the Rosslare, Wexford to Dublin line in Ireland © Irish Rail

Traveling by train is one of Ireland ’s great, if under-appreciated, pleasures.

It’s a small island and the rail network is limited, so no journey is especially long – but riding the rails across the country is one of the loveliest ways to enjoy the rolling countryside.

Compared to its European counterparts, Irish trains aren’t especially spectacular, but this is a country that doesn’t need high-speed or sleeper trains: you roll along at a maximum of 160km/h (99mph) and before you know it you’re on the other side of the island.

The particular nature of Irish demographics has shaped train travel in Ireland: with around a quarter of the population clustered in the greater Dublin region, it makes sense that most train journeys begin or end in the capital. In Northern Ireland the same is true of Belfast .

Irish trains might not be especially quick or super luxurious, but they’re an efficient and eco-friendly way of exploring the island – so long as your explorations are focused on the major cities and towns. Here is our essential guide to train travel in Ireland.

Overhead shot of trains on rails at a depot

The lowdown on rail travel in Ireland

Irish trains are efficient, relatively frequent and usually on time.  Irish Rail/Iarnród Éireann operates the entire network of trains in the Republic, from intercity trains linking the major urban centers to the busy commuter network that services the greater Dublin region.

There are two main lines into the west and three into the south and southwest; spurs off the main lines connect to a host of smaller towns throughout the country. There’s also a line to Belfast, from where  Translink services connect the city with the Antrim Coast and Derry (Londonderry) .

Within the greater Dublin region, a network of commuter services connects the capital with a host of suburbs and dormitory towns in the surrounding counties. Dublin’s coastline between the northside suburbs of Howth and Malahide, and Greystones in County Wicklow is served by DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transport) trains.

There are some notable gaps in the country’s rail network, with no services in counties Donegal , Monaghan and Cavan , and no trains into West Cork . Some towns – like Buttevant in Cork or Annacotty in Limerick – are on the rail line but they’re bypassed as they have no functioning station.

Ireland’s bigger train stations – including Cork , Limerick , Galway , Sligo, Belfast and the two in Dublin – are all pretty well stocked when it comes to picking up supplies and other assorted sundries for your journey. Most other stations will have a small shop.

A train crosses a viaduct below a dramatic cloudy sky

Train tickets are relatively good value

The good news about traveling by train in Ireland is that it is relatively inexpensive compared to train travel in some places, such as the UK, for example. If you buy it online, a standard one-way fare between Dublin Heuston and Kent Station in Cork costs €30–35, and around €55 in first class.

Online is the best place to buy your tickets for train travel in the Irish Republic. Not only do you get the best fares (with savings of up to 50% compared to buying the ticket at the station), but you can purchase your ticket up to 90 days in advance and reserve a seat when you do.

You have the option of collecting your bought ticket from a machine at the station as you’re boarding, or downloading a QR code at the point of purchase. If you wait to buy your ticket at the station, you’ll pay significantly more and have to get there early to queue up at the ticket kiosk.

For travel in Northern Ireland, you’re better off buying the ticket at the station as only a limited number of tickets are available online. Show up a short time before your intended departure time and just buy your ticket there.

Only a handful of services offer first class, but upgrading is relatively inexpensive. On average, expect to pay around €20–25 more to sit in first. There are three kinds of first class service on Irish trains. CityGold is on direct Dublin to Cork services, and includes an onboard host and a complimentary newspaper on selected early morning services. The Enterprise service between Dublin and Belfast offers the same, plus a fine breakfast. Premier Class is similar, but is only available on direct services between Dublin and Tralee and some Dublin to Cork trains.

A train runs through a village near the edge of the sea

Some discounts and offers apply

There are discounted fares for children and young adults aged between 19 and 25, as long as they have a valid discount card. Under fives and those aged 66 and over travel for free.

The commuter network in the Greater Dublin area has a fare cap of €6 for travel between the capital and a host of towns in the surrounding counties.

There are two rail passes aimed at visitors. The Trekker Four Day (€88) offers unlimited travel for adults on all Irish Rail services on four consecutive days from the date of issue. The Explorer (adult/child €128/64) provides five days of travel on all services in a 15-day window.

However, before investing in either, be sure that you plan on making the most out of it. The limited rail network means that connections are limited and traveling between some destinations involves backtracking: Cork and Waterford are both on the south coast, but to get from one to the other means travelling to Limerick, while Sligo and Westport are only 140km (87 miles) apart along the west coast, but to go between them by train you’ll have to travel through Dublin – which is on the other side of the country.

In Northern Ireland, the Sunday Fun Day Tracker ticket gives passengers unlimited train travel on a Sunday for £9 (£4.50 for children). Tickets are available from all ticket offices, the mLink ticketing app and from the conductor on the train.

A busy train platform in the evening

These are the busiest times to travel by train

Unsurprisingly, peak times for train travel coincide with busy rush hour periods. Early morning services to Dublin from cities including Cork, Galway and Limerick can be busy, especially if the train is due to arrive in Dublin around the start of the working day. Friday evening trains departing Dublin can also be quite busy. However, as online bookings also include the option of booking a seat, you’ll never have to stand.

The commuter network is busiest on weekdays from 7am to 9am and from 4:30pm to 6:30pm as thousands of people travel in and out of work. You can’t prebook seats on these services, so plenty of people do end up standing. Keep an eye out on changing schedules, especially for weekend and holiday travel, as frequencies diminish.

The train network is limited, but it has some benefits over road travel

There are no rail links to any Irish airport, which means you’re relying on taxis, private cars or buses once you arrive in the country. Irish ferry ports are better connected to rail lines, however, and you can catch trains in Rosslare, Dublin and Larne; there is no rail link to Belfast Port.

If you want to reach the more remote corners of the island, then the Irish rail network is quite limited, and a car will give you the flexibility you need. However, rental fees can be very expensive and fuel is another considerable cost, with the price of unleaded and diesel hovering between €1.75 and €2 a liter. Parking is also pricey in all urban centers, especially Dublin.

Traveling by bus is the cheapest way to get around, but it can be a slow business, as most make lots of stops along the way. There are some direct express services, but they are at the mercy of traffic, which can also add considerable time to a journey compared to traveling by train. Plus, buses don’t have bathrooms, with those traveling longer distances relying entirely on rest stops.

A train passes through autumnal countryside

On board facilities vary depending on the type of train

There are two kinds of Irish trains: InterCity and commuter. InterCity trains are all the same – relatively modern with comfortable seats in standard class and fancier recliners in first – and they travel at speeds of up to 160km/h (99mph). There’s no journey in Ireland that is longer than 2½ to 3 hours. Commuter trains are slightly older, with less comfortable seats; older trains are used on some small-distance spur lines in rural areas and are very basic (facilities include seats and a toilet).

While Ireland’s flagship service is the one between Dublin and Cork, the fanciest train is the Enterprise service between Dublin Connolly and Belfast Lanyon Place, which is a joint venture between Irish Rail and Translink. This train is on a par with most services you’ll find in mainland Europe and first class is the most luxurious of any in the country.

All InterCity trains have three-pin sockets at every row where you can plug in a charger or a laptop. Most commuter trains in the greater Dublin area also have sockets. All trains have toilets and there is a cross-network wi-fi service operated by Irish Rail, but it is patchy and inconsistent. Translink has its own wi-fi network, which is accessible on all bus and rail services in the north, but, like in the Republic, you’re at the mercy of signal strength and contention levels.

Food options are pretty limited. There is a trolley service on the Dublin to Cork service, while the Enterprise between Dublin and Belfast operates a full service menu in a dedicated dining car; first class passengers also get a pretty good breakfast as part of their ticket.

Some trains on the Dublin to Cork route have a “quiet carriage” (usually Carriage G, marked in purple when booking) where the use of phones is prohibited and passengers are encouraged to keep noise levels down.

You can bring a bike on any Irish Rail train for free, although there are some restrictions during busy periods (such as sporting fixtures and concerts). The Dublin to Cork line is the only one to have a dedicated bike storage area; all other InterCity trains have (very) limited bicycle spaces within the passenger compartment – it’s not unusual for only two bikes to be allowed into the compartment, so be sure to book in advance. Bikes are not allowed on commuter and DART services during peak hours – before 10am and from 3:30pm to 7pm Monday to Friday.

A train follows a scenic route by the sea

There are many scenic train routes: here are the best

No matter where you are in Ireland you’re going to find a beautiful landscape or two, but some journeys are worth keeping your eyes wide open for.

Dublin to Sligo

Once you’ve gone past the huge suburban sprawl of the greater Dublin area, the landscapes get quite gentle; beyond Mullingar the train skirts alongside the edge of beautiful Lough Owel. For the best views, sit on the left-hand side of the train.

Dublin to Belfast

The Enterprise service is the best in the country, with the most comfortable seats and the best food options – especially in first class. The train skirts alongside the Irish Sea between Malahide and Balbriggan, so be sure to sit on that side as you travel (on the right-hand side if you’re traveling to Belfast).

Derry (Londonderry) to Coleraine

The Translink service between Northern Ireland’s second city and Coleraine is a stunner, a 40-minute journey along the Causeway Coast that comes with beautiful beaches, huge cliffs and unimpeded views out over the North Sea.

Downpatrick to Inch Abbey

It’s only a 10-minute journey, but the trip from Downpatrick in County Down to the monastic ruins of Inch Abbey takes place in a vintage steam train (or a 1960s diesel train) that chugs its way along the line, over the River Quoile and past the drumlin-specked landscape.

Cork to Cobh

One of Ireland’s most scenic trips is the 25-minute trip from Cork City to the seaside town of Cobh , which takes you along the river (sit on the right for the best views), past marshy Harper’s Island and over the bridges on Lough Mahon and the Slatty Water. You can always stop off at Fota and visit the  wildlife park  there.

Book in advance for wheelchair access to trains

All InterCity services are nominally accessible, but if you do need assistance you will need to book it in advance so that suitable arrangements can be made. This usually means that a conductor will have a ramp ready for wheelchair access, but we have also heard plenty of anecdotal evidence of staff simply lifting a wheelchair onto a train, which depending on the individual can either be a help or an annoying hindrance. Whatever you do, make sure to communicate your requirements before you travel as assistance is not guaranteed otherwise.

For passengers with learning difficulties or any issue where there may be a challenge with communication (such as autism) Irish Rail staff are trained to recognize visual cue cards such as the  JAM card , which inform the interlocutor of the holder’s condition. JAM cards are available online or at mainline train stations in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford and Sligo.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 The Sotted Sage Walkthrough

March 23, 2024 by Gage Leave a Comment

The Sotted Sage is a side quest in Dragon’s Dogma 2. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of The Sotted Sage side mission.

  • Starting Location: Agamen Volcanic Island > Volcanic Island Camp
  • Quest Giver: Lamond
  • Requirement: Reach Volcanic Island Camp
  • Reward: 980 XP, 500 G, Rotten Soft-Boiled Egg, Warfarer Vocation, Grandmaster’s Path tome (Warfarer Maister’s Teaching)
  • Quest Description: You encountered Lamond, a tippled patron of the hot springs. But is that all he is? There’s a curious air about him that hints at something more – unless that’s just the sulfur?

Objectives:

  • Give Lamond what he seeks

Starting Location: The Sotted Sage

This quest is started in Agamen Volcanic Island (3rd main region furthest south on map) > Volcanic Island Camp > Geyser Hamlet. To get to this area, follow the path south in Battahl (desert region), then go through Drabnir’s Grotto which connects to the Volcanic Island region.

Inside Volcanic Island Camp go up the wooden ramps and climb the ladder to find Lamond. He will automatically talk to you when you approach the hot spring bath. After the interaction you will receive the quest regardless of the choice you made.

sage travel guides

Give Lamond what he seeks (3 Newt Liqueur)

Lamond is seeking alcohol, specifically Newt Liqueur. You need to bring him three of them to complete the quest (if you gave him one during the first interaction that counts too). You can rarely find them through exploration or by combining Saurian Tail and Fruit Wine, but the easiest way to obtain three at once is by purchasing them for a total of 15,000 Gold from Higgs’s Tavern Stand located in Bakbattahl.

You must complete a little extra step before you can buy them. Outside Higgs’s Tavern, to the left of the entrance, is a small fenced area and two bags. You first want to put on a Beastren Mask if you are human, because the shop only lets in Beastren. If you haven’t obtained a mask already, they can be purchased at Ibrahim’s Scrap Shop at the Checkpoint Rest Town. While wearing the mask pick up one of the bags with R2/RT and drop it into the fenced area.

sage travel guides

If you are wearing the mask, you will be immediately taken inside the shop. If you weren’t, an NPC will call for help because he’s upset you are messing with his stuff. Defeat the enemies who come.

Then go UPSTAIRS and through the wooden door. This door was locked until now. Interact with the merchant behind the door upstairs and buy 3 Newt Liqueur from him (not the downstairs vendor).

sage travel guides

If you can’t interact with him, rest at a bench and come back. Due to having triggered combat it sometimes blocks the interaction prompt but resting fixes it.

sage travel guides

After buying the 3 items, you may or may not get another guard coming in who will fight you. If he comes simply defeat him, if not you can leave in peace.

Make your way back to Lamond where the quest started and turn in the Newt Liqueur to complete the quest. As a reward he will give you the Warfarer vocation, which is the “all-in-one” vocation that lets you use all weapons and unlocked skills from other vocations. Watch out that Lamond also gives you the item “Grandmaster’s Path” item (check right side of screen after giving him 3rd liqueur). If not, talk to him again, this is the Warfarer’s Master Teaching.

This finishes The Sotted Sage side quest in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

  • A Brief Guide to All the Key Hotels in Washington D.C.

Seven hotels earned at least one MICHELIN Key in Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. MICHELIN Keys Travel Hotels

sage travel guides

On April 24, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide announced its very first Key hotels in the United States — a brand new distinction recognizing the most outstanding hotels in the country. We're thrilled to report that, in Washington D.C., seven hotels earned at least One Key. And while hotels in the capital have historically skewed towards the traditional, our seven Key hotels run the gamut of styles. Among the newest and hippest, the Eaton DC sports a boho aesthetic and a firm commitment to a progressive ethos — this hotel, set downtown on K Street, is a launchpad for progress, where rotating art exhibits fill the first floor and activists and political groups make use of its radio station, screening room, and co-working space. Representing the more traditional luxury hotels, the Hay Adams has been an institution — set in a monumental Italian Renaissance building just across from the White House — since 1928. Here, the feeling is of old-world elegance. Between the Eaton and the Hay Adams, we find the rest of our Key hotels somewhere in the stylistic middle. For waterfront views try the Pendry , with its modernist, Parisian-influenced aesthetic set on the Potomac in the city’s Southwest Waterfront. Or head to Georgetown and the Rosewood , where vistas from the rooftop bar overlook the C&O Canal. Other highlights: the  Dupont Circle Hotel , one of the only hotels privileged enough to set up in Dupont Circle, with its sophisticated restaurant and a swanky cocktail bar. The Jefferson , another option downtown, has the Quill, an upscale cocktail bar and lounge in its historic building dating back to 1923. At the Riggs , in the city’s Penn Quarter, there’s both an enchanting cafe and a subterranean bar. You can hardly go wrong. Below, explore the map of every Key hotel in Washington D.C. And scroll down to learn more each accommodation.

11 Things on Sale You’ll Actually Want to Buy: From Champion to Our Place

Portrait of Sam Daly

Good news if you’ve been doing some apartment-décor hunting, because Brooklinen and Our Place are both having excellent sales today. I’ve included some of our most recommended products from the brand (including a personal fave). I also found some wardrobe basics to stock up on at Amazon and self-tanning mousse for a faux pre-summer glow.

Coco & Eve Sunny Honey Bali Bronzing Self Tanner Mousse

If the scent of self-tanners turns you off, our friends at the Cut say this is the best-smelling option.

Wander Agio Women Bikini Cover Up

And to show off your new ( faux ) tan, one of our favorite tunic-type swimsuit cover-ups .

Hanes Men's Essentials T-shirt Pack

If you missed the deal on Jungmaven’s white tee in yesterday’s post , here’s a set of tried-and-true Hanes that shakes out to just $5 apiece.

Champion Powerblend Fleece Jogger Sweatpants

Also for $20: some classic Champion sweats.

Brooklinen Down Pillow

Everything at  Brooklinen  is 25 percent off, which is the best deal we’ve ever seen the brand offer. This plush  down pillow  is “the epitome of the airy fluffiness that luxury down pillows are known for,” according to former Strategist sleep writer Latifah Miles.

Brooklinen Mulberry-Silk Pillowcase

I highly recommend this silk pillowcase (which I own in the celestial print above and a now-discontinued emerald green). My hair is less staticky when I use it, and I never wake up with sleep lines on my face.

Brooklinen Super-Plush Bath Towel Bundle

Bundles are even cheaper: These super-plush bath towels that our former writer Lori Keong  raved about  after receiving them as a housewarming gift are “exactly what I would want if I didn’t already own them,” she says. “They’re so soft and luxurious and big enough to swaddle yourself in.”

Brooklinen Super-Plush Robe

And this already on-sale robe made out of the same fluffy material as the towels is doubly discounted down to just $36.

Our Place Mini Always Pan 2.0

Our Place is having a spring sale, and Nordstrom is price-matching. If you don’t have room for the full-size version, the mini–Always Pan is cute (and plenty cheaper).

Our Place Home Cook Apron

And for those who’d like to match their Always Pan, its apron is 20 percent off.

Our Place Short Night & Day Glasses

Stackable glasses worth stocking up on. The “heavy-bottomed beauties feel wonderfully hefty in your hand, look more expensive than they are, and are great for drinking everything from water to old-fashioneds to wine,” says Strategist writer Dominique Pariso.

The Strategist is designed to surface the most useful, expert recommendations for things to buy across the vast e-commerce landscape. Some of our latest conquests include the best acne treatments , rolling luggage , pillows for side sleepers , natural anxiety remedies , and bath towels . We update links when possible, but note that deals can expire and all prices are subject to change.
