12 Essential Idaho Road Trip Experiences

This is a sponsored post..

With such wide diversity in landscapes and outdoor recreation opportunities, Idaho is one of the most underrated states in the West. From the high desert plains to jagged mountain peaks to pristine rivers and streams, no matter what part of the state you find yourself in, we guarantee there’s someplace beautiful to explore nearby.

One of the best ways to get the full Idaho experience is to road trip through the state. With so many gorgeous scenic byways and charming rural towns to stop in along the way, the journey can be as much of a draw as the destinations themselves.

We compiled a road trip itinerary that features some of the best outdoor recreation activities the state has to offer. Whether you’re into kayaking, rafting, horseback riding, biking, hiking, or fly fishing, we’ve got something for you.

Located along the dramatic cliffs of the Snake River Canyon, the city of Twin Falls has a high desert climate but tons of outdoor water recreation.

What to Do: Snake River Canyon Rim Trail

Walk, run, or bike along the spectacularly scenic Snake River Canyon Rim Trail. The rim trail can be picked up from the northern terminus of Washington Street, next to the Visitor Center, or in Shoshone Park. Venture out to the famed Evil Knievel jump site, watch BASE jumpers leap from Perrine Bridge, or grab a drink at Elevation 486 and watch the sun set over the canyon.

Perrine-Coulee Falls  – This waterfall drops nearly 200 feet down into the Snake River Canyon, creating a continuous ribbon of water as it falls. Unlike most waterfalls, Perrine-Coulee Falls actually increases in strength during the summer because water used for irrigation spills over into the Coulee River. If you don’t mind getting a little wet, there’s even trail that leads behind the falls.

Where to Stay: Blue Lakes Inn – While the outside looks like an unassuming roadside motel, on the inside the rooms have all had a classy modern makeover. Don’t pass up this hidden gem. (Note: the complimentary breakfast here is legit!)

Where to Eat: The Buffalo Cafe – Light on amenities, heavy on character, this old fashioned hole-in-the-wall diner is where the town’s old guard gathers for breakfast.

KB’s – With five locations throughout Idaho, KB is quickly becoming the premiere burrito stop in the whole state (Recommendation: get the Jordan’s Burrito – It’s loaded with slow cooked pork, black beans, and yams!)

Slice Pizza – Delicious brick oven pizza right in downtown Twin Falls. Grab an order to go or hang out on their front patio.

From Twin Falls to Boise, take Interstate 84 heading west.

As one of the fastest growing urban centers in America, Boise is quickly becoming the new darling city of the West. With a charming downtown, new restaurants and breweries, and an abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities nearby, it’s easy to see why people are flocking to Boise. What to Do:

woman riding bike on greenbelt path

Boise Greenbelt  – Running through the heart of the city, the Greenbelt is a 25-mile pathway that runs along the Boise River. This tree-lined river corridor is both a recreation destination and means of access for pedestrians and cyclists. Take a sunset stroll, rent a bike from one of the many Green Bike stations , or grab an inner tube and float down the Boise River during the warm summer months.

Payette Brewing Tour – Feeling thirsty while pedaling down the Greenbelt? Stop by the Payette Brewery and take a brewery tour. With a brand new building, plenty of outdoor space, and tons of amazing craft brews on tap, Payette Brewing is a great place to spend the afternoon.

Old Idaho Penitentiary – While today Boise is a very modern city, you can still connect with its western roots at the Old Idaho Penitentiary. Operated as a prison from 1872 to 1973, this historical site is open to the public. While a sobering place to visit, it offers a glimpse into what life behind bars looked like in the old American West.

Raft the Payette River with Cascade Raft & Kayak – While the city of Boise is a great place to visit on its own, its access to outdoor recreation opportunities is what truly makes it incredible. Case in point: only 45 minutes outside of town and you have access to world class whitewater. Sign up with Cascade Raft & Kayak and get an introduction to the class III & IV rapids on the South Fork of the Payette River or check out the all-ages option for the whole family. This is a must do experience!

Where to Stay: Hotel 43 – Sitting on the 43rd parallel in the 43rd state, Hotel 43 is a uniquely styled boutique hotel right in the heart of downtown Boise. (Note: Coffee drinkers rejoice. Each room comes with a Keurig coffee maker!)Where to Eat: Bacon – This breakfast and lunch bistro joint takes its bacon seriously. In addition to the standard menu, there is also a separate bacon menu with five different kinds of bacon. Bacon also makes an incredible bacon Bloody Mary.

High Note – Exceptional breakfast and lunch menu with a slight dive bar feel, the High Note is a favorite locals hangout in the middle of downtown Boise.

Bittercreek Alehouse – Casual, mindful, and often pretty busy, the Bittercreek Alehouse serves a wide range of draft microbrews alongside locally sourced pub fare. (If you like fries, cheese, and gravy, then definitely check out their poutine!)

From Boise to Stanley, take Highway 21 going north.

At the foot of the Sawtooth Mountains, the tiny town of Stanley (population 63) is one of the last remaining holdouts of the Idaho frontier. Scenically located, pristinely untouched, this town feels a little like stepping into the past. With access to nearly any type of outdoor recreation you can possibly imagine, Stanley serves as a gateway to an entire world of Idaho adventures.

What to Do: Hike in the Sawtooths Mountains – While this stunning mountain range rivals the Sierra Nevadas and the Canadian Rockies in beauty, they are very lacking in one department: crowds. Their relatively remote location makes them a haven for those looking for a more intimate connection with the natural environment. There over 700 miles of trails, 300 high mountain lakes, and 40 peaks that rise above 10,000 feet. Out here, there’s plenty of wilderness to explore.

woman hiking on path along aspen trees

Horseback riding with Redfish Lake Corrals –   If you want to experience the Sawtooths like the early settlers, then you’ve got to ride out on horseback. Redfish Lake Corrals can take you on an early morning tour where you can watch the sunrise illuminate the jagged mountain cliffs, or lead you on a day ride out to one of the many gorgeous alpine lakes. It’s an experience that won’t easily be forgotten. (If possible, ask for Kagan to be your guide! An Idaho native, he’s full of fun facts and interesting history about the area.)

Land of Yankee Fork State Park – Take a glimpse into Idaho’s rich mining history with a visit to Land of the Yankee Fork State Park. Explore the old mining boom towns of Custer, Bayhorse, and Bonanza or take a guided tour of one of best preserved floating gold dredges in the world. (Not all visitor center movies are worth it, but the one at Yankee Fork definitely is.)

Where to Stay: Sunny Gulch Campground – While there is traditional lodging to be found in Stanley, there is also an abundant amount of camping. Sunny Gulch is located to the south of town, but offers spectacular views of the Sawtooths at dawn. (Try to get campsite #5 and you’ll be rewarded with a fantastic view of sunrise on the Sawtooths with your morning coffee.)

Where to Eat: Stanley Baking Company & Cafe – A charming breakfast and lunch spot with legendary baked goods and a friendly atmosphere. Order coffee and baked goods to go or sit down on the front porch and enjoy a full country breakfast. (Recommendation: their sourdough pancakes!)

From Stanley to Salmon, take State Highway 75 north to US 93 and continue north.

Nestled in the Bitterroot Mountains of central Idaho, Salmon is a small rural community with some serious small town vibes. Located along the Salmon River – otherwise known as “The River of No Return” – this town balloons in size during the annual steelhead run.

What to Do: Fly Fishing the Salmon River

man fly fishing

Idaho has some of the best fly fishing in the entire country and has serious anglers planning their vacations to Salmon during peak times of the year. Whether you’re a seasoned fisherman or just looking to get into the sport, stop by The Flybox – the only full service fly fishing shop in the area. (Note: Try to speak with the owner Steve. He’s a very humble, down to earth guy and an absolute wealth of knowledge.)

Goldbug Hot Springs   – Widely considered to be one of the most “epic” hot springs in the entire country, Goldbug has a combination of attributes that make it a truly incredible experience. Its remote location and steep two miles hike tends to deter some but its terraced pools offer both seclusion and stunning views while the water is crystal clear. The bottom is stony gravel and there’s a hot water waterfall. It pretty much doesn’t get any better than that.

Where to stay: Stagecoach Inn – A classic roadside motel right in downtown Salmon. Enjoy views of the Salmon River that runs directly behind the property or take a short walk into town.

Where to Eat: Rise and Shine Espresso – Small funky coffee shop with an eclectic breakfast & lunch menu. Eat in or stop by their drive-thru window for an order to go.

Oddfellows Bakery – A must stop destination for anyone visiting Salmon. Great coffee, nice atmosphere, and out of this world bread!

Junkyard Bistro – A funky small town bistro and bar with a surprising amount of vegetarian and gluten free options.

The 1120-mile, 17-hour road trip from San Diego to Yellowstone National Park takes you through Las Vegas, St George, Salt Lake City and Idaho Falls, plus natural wonders the Grand Canyon, Mojave National Preserve, Zion National Park and Dixie National Forest.

To help with the planning of your amazing road trip, check out all the information below for great inspiration, information and things to do along the way.

How far is Yellowstone National Park from San Diego, and how long will the road trip take?

The road trip from San Diego to Yellowstone National Park is approximately 1120 miles and takes around 17 hours. That's if you were to drive nonstop along the route, without accounting for any stops including filling up with gas.

There's no point in a road trip if you just drive from A to B though. There are so many great places to see along this route, each with their own unique experiences. You should definitely break it up for a more relaxing journey and creating an unforgettable road trip.

We would recommend taking a steady four days to get between San Diego and Yellowstone National Park, breaking up the drive into a more manageable 4 to 5 hours per day. This gives you the chance to experience Las Vegas, Zion National Park and Salt Lake City during your fantastic road trip.

Of course, if you have the time there are plenty of opportunities to extend this trip, especially if you're keen on spending time in some of the country's great natural spaces.

Best road trip route from San Diego to Yellowstone National Park

The direct route between San Diego and Yellowstone is a pretty straightforward one, allowing you plenty of time to experience the wonderful sights along the way.

The drive will take you through numerous states, all of which have some exceptional scenery to soak up along the way.

You do have the option to head further inland to see the Grand Canyon or Monument Valley, but even if you only have time to stick to the direct route you'll still enjoy some incredible stops along the way.

How to drive from San Diego to Yellowstone National Park

The map above shows our suggestions for the best road trip routes between San Diego and Yellowstone National Park. Keep reading for detailed descriptions of both routes, where to stay on either, and the best things to do on the way.

Hop on the I-15 North straight out of San Diego, switching to the I-215 at Murrieta. You can stop at San Bernardino National Forest if you want to stretch your legs under the shade of the trees before heading out into the desert.

The I-215 merges with the I-15 after a few more miles. The route from here is very simple, passing Mojave National Preserve before crossing into Nevada to reach the vibrant streets of Las Vegas for your first recommended overnight stop.

After you've finished trying your luck in Vegas, get back on to the I-15 heading north. From Littlefield the road takes you through the Virgin River Gorge, following the path carved out by the river for several miles.

Turquoise river runs through steep sided red rock gorge

After crossing into Utah you'll approach Zion National Park, which is another great spot to break your journey. Take Exit 16 of the I-15 to get up to the park.

Continue on the I-15 northwards towards Salt Lake City. You have the option to detour to Dixie National Forest before you reach the city - a highly recommended stop if you're keen on hiking, with some very photogenic rocky landscapes to explore.

Stick with the I-15 as you leave Salt Lake City, which takes you across yet another state line into Wyoming. Take a break at Idaho Falls before finally leaving the Interstate at exit 119 and continuing along Highway 20, which takes you right up to Yellowstone National Park.

Grand Canyon Detour

From Las Vegas, you have the option of extending your trip to visit the Grand Canyon. This will add around seven hours to your drive but is well worth the detour if you still have to check this magnificent natural monument off your bucket list.

Leave Las Vegas on the I-515 and switch to the I-11 at Henderson. You'll cross into Arizona right by the Hoover Dam, and the road changes to Highway 93 here.

Join the I-40 at Kingman, then turn north onto Highway 64 at Williams. This will take you right up to the canyon.

View of the Horseshoe Bend near Paige, Arizona - a famous 180 degree turn of the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.

After exploring and admiring the stunning views, continue east on Highway 64 until it joins Highway 89 at Cameron. This road will take you through many miles of desert landscape, passing Vermilion Cliffs National Monument.

To visit Zion National Park hop onto Highway 9 before returning to Highway 89.

Bryce Canyon, accessed via Highway 12, is your last stop before rejoining the main route on the I-15. To get back to the main route, turn onto Highway 20 at Bear Valley and follow it until you meet the I-15 and continue on your journey north.

Best places to stop between San Diego and Yellowstone National Park

As mentioned above, we would recommend three overnight stops along this beautiful route. We've outlined the best locations below, as well as things to do and places to stay.

You can also combine the stopovers with other activities and sights along the route, depending on how much time you have to take this trip.

Soak up the bright lights of Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is most certainly one of a kind - it has everything you can want, and more.

Whether it's dining in all you can eat buffets, getting your adrenaline fix on the skyscraper thrill rides or gambling the night away in Caesar's Palace. You'll be sure to never find a dull moment in the entertainment capital of the world.

Around a five hour drive from San Diego, there's more to keep you busy in Las Vegas than you might think. Test your nerves on the thrill rides at the top of the Stratosphere, practice your shooting at the Gun Range, zipline through Fremont Street or indulge yourself at the Heart Attack Grill. The list of optional activities is endless.

Stay overnight in Zion National Park, Utah

Heading further North and situated a pleasant 2 hours and 35 minute drive from Las Vegas you will arrive at your second overnight stop at the magnificent Zion National Park.

This also makes a great stopover if you add on the Grand Canyon detour, you'll just have a longer drive to get all the way here.

As you approach Zion you will be greeted by exceptional views in every direction. Sheer rock faces and vast valleys are scattered throughout the entire National Park.

Zion National Park is a perfect spot for hikers and photographers alike. A true highlight is the five mile round trip hike to Angel's Landing - the elevation gain of 1500ft is challenging, but you'll be rewarded with utterly breath-taking views of the 270 million-year-old rock layers when you reach the top.

The rays of the sun illuminate red cliffs and river at sunset with a beautiful pink sky

Another great activity in Zion is to explore The Narrows as you wade through the Virgin River surrounded by huge 1000 feet tall rock faces.

Hotels are slightly less common in this area, however we have an absolute gem of a recommendation in the SpringHill Suites by Marriott Springdale Zion National Park - a property that oozes both class and modern comfort. Built to make the most of its stunning situation, it's in a perfect location to head out and explore Zion.

Whether you're hiking in the national park or just appreciating the views on a scenic drive, where better to end a day on this road trip than by the on-side pool with its fantastic red rock view.

Explore the Great Salt Lake and Bonneville Salt Flats near Salt Lake City, Utah

Salt Lake City is an amazing spot to stay overnight on your road trip from San Diego to Yellowstone National Park. Situated directly next to the Great Salt Lake and Bonneville Salt Flats, you will be spoilt for choice with the multiple options of excursions and activities available.

Salt Lake City is approximately a 4 hours and 20 minute drive from Zion National Park and a steady 4 hours and 30 minute drive from your final destination of Yellowstone National Park.

The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art and the Clark Planetarium are both top sites to visit. Come evening you can take a short evening drive out of the city to East Canyon State Park for some stunning views of the Milky Way.

Best time to go on a road trip from San Diego to Yellowstone National Park

The route between San Diego and Yellowstone National Park is astonishing all year round, but we would recommend spring or fall as the best times to take this trip.

There's potential in the winter months for roads and trails through the national parks to be completely closed due to snowfall or unsafe conditions. Or for contrast, if you visit in summer you'll have to factor in some stretches of hot desert driving that won't suit every traveler.

April to May is when Yellowstone really starts to spring back to life after the long, hard winter. Wolves are commonly spotted, bears are starting to emerge from hibernation, and newborn bison can often be seen.

Even if you don't manage to spy any of the park's wildlife, you'll be in for a treat with a burst of color from the wildflowers. You'll avoid some of the crowds of tourists that can descend on Yellowstone during the summer school holidays too.

Hot steam erupts in a fountain from a geyser, brightly lit by moonlight in a dark sky filled with stars

That said, a lot of the accommodation in Yellowstone closes for the winter, so check reopening dates if you're planning on visiting in April.

Whether snow-covered or dazzled by sunshine, Yellowstone will always supply an abundance of breathtaking views, but vehicle access is very limited when snow is on the ground. The only way to reach Old Faithful at this time of year is via guided snowmobile tour.

One thing's for sure, your road trip from San Diego to Yellowstone National Park will be jam-packed with activities and definitely one you will never forget.

Why We Love It: The desert is a bright spot with cool options for a no-children getaway

We love kids, but sometimes we want to enjoy our mimosas and pool time in peace. Thankfully, Coachella Valley has new destinations for travelers without tots. Or try Sparrows Lodge , a 21-and-over boutique hotel with a hip country-cool vibe and elegant outdoor dinners every Wednesday and Saturday. In town, get to Rooster and the Pig when it opens at 5 p.m.—the no-reservations, dinner-only pan-Asian restaurant is a hot ticket in town for those in the know, and the wait is worth it for crispy beef noodles and black pepper tofu.

The Moroccan-inspired hotel is decked out in blush tones, ornate tile work, a three-room spa, and the Pink Cabana restaurant, a print-happy nod to retro tennis and racquet clubs. And even if you go to the scene-y Parker Palm Springs , don’t miss the somewhat secret Counter Reformation , a monastery-chic indoor wine bar tucked into their back garden.

Valle de Guadalupe

Why We Love It: There’s a new crop of resorts and restaurants in Mexico’s wine country

Maybe you’ve been to Finca Altozano, Laja, and Deckman’s, and you’ve already stayed at La Villa del Valle and Encuentro. So let us introduce you to el Valle’s impressive freshman recruits. The Villas at El Cielo Winery Resort debuted in November with 95 suites and 33 villas, two restaurants, and a café adjacent to the five-year-old winery, all spanning 79 acres.

Vineyards at El Cielo Winery Resort, Valle de Guadalupe

In August, Hotel Partana opened its six-room steel-and-wood-heavy property on the same site as Finca (chef Javier Plascencia’s alfresco ode to wood-fire cooking), Lupe (his food truck serving tortas and ice cream), Animalón (his pop-up dinner series hosted beneath a 200-year-old oak tree), and Das Cortez (a trendy coffee kiosk).

This summer, look for glamping staple CuatroCuatros in nearby Ensenada to open new cabins, plus a spa and Japanese restaurant. And in the fall, the Valle Food & Wine Festival —which last year drew major chefs like Nancy Silverton and Dominique Crenn—is rumored to be returning for food, music, and oenophilic pleasures.

Just across the border in Tijuana, take in cocktails and food from the famed Tacos Kokopelli at the new Cereus Bar, located in the trendy live-work space Estacíon Federal.

Laguna Beach

Why We Love It: A new hotel is breathing fresh air into the quirky beach town

We’ve always appreciated the pristine beaches, electric sunsets, and funky art scene in Laguna Beach, but thanks to the somewhat uninspiring hotel scene, it’s usually a day trip rather than a multi-day excursion. That’s changed with Hotel Joaquin , a 22-room boutique property on the beach from the same team behind Korakia Pensione in Palm Springs. It’s understated sexy, best suited for adults and friend groups. Breakfast and gear like bodyboards and surfboards are free, and it’s a quick two-minute walk to the beach.

Around town, Trap Door Dining hosts seasonal pop-up dinners for 15–20 guests led by chef Kenny Seliger, who previously worked in the kitchen at Montage Laguna Beach. His next dinner takes place March 23 at Newport Beach’s Kit Coffee with a four-course meal of whipped burrata, spring peas with pork belly, and a vanilla shortcake with blueberry jelly.

Los Angeles

Why We Love It: City of Angels? Try City of Creatives.

Don’t let proximity stop you from enjoying LA’s current renaissance. Finally there’s a chic place to rest your head on the east side: The upcoming Silver Lake Pool & Inn , due next month, has a vintage California feel—wood facades, open layouts, greenery, and natural light aplenty.

Farther west, Culver City is now a destination in its own right thanks to the vibrant, two-month-old Palihotel Culver City , with 49 rooms outfitted in modern decor and art deco touches. They say nobody walks in LA, but from the Palihotel it’s no more than 20 minutes to BäcoShop for Middle Eastern eats, Destroyer for Scandinavian-style plates, and Arcana for coffee table books on fashion and photography.

Elsewhere in the city, clock in at least one meal at Fiona , the new all-day eatery near Melrose serving Asian-inspired dishes as well as can’t-miss desserts—owners Shawn Pham and Nicole Rucker previously worked at the Southeast Asian spot Simbal and carb temple Gjelina, respectively.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

The Hollywood Roosevelt

Looking for a more classic stay? The Hollywood Roosevelt , site of the first Academy Awards 90 years ago, is a posh boutique option with The Spare Room , a hybrid cocktail bar and bowling alley within the hotel.

Leave the car at home!

Board the Pacific Surfliner train from downtown, Solana Beach, or Oceanside and get to LA in under 2.5 hours. You can use The Freehand as a home base—the 13-story downtown hotel has apartment-style lofts, traditional rooms, and coed or female-only shared accommodations with bunk beds, less than two miles from Union Station. And don’t miss yoga on their colorful rooftop.

Why We Love It: Post-wildfires, the ’bu needs your support

Last fall’s deadly fires wreaked havoc on the tony coastal enclave, obliterating at least 670 structures. Now it’s time to pour some money back into the community. The Surfrider Malibu  combines classic SoCal beach culture with high-end details. Beachfront rooms are decked in whites and blond woods, fitted with rain showers and outdoor terraces, and in the suites, hammocks.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

The Surfrider Malibu

If you can pull yourself away from the property, the front desk can arrange “surf safaris” and hiking trips. It’s a similarly serene vibe at Nobu Ryokan . With only 16 rooms, the Japanese-style inn embraces its East Asian influences with teak soaking tubs, linen yukata robes, and tatami mats. Plus, it’s just a short walk to Nobu Malibu for their famous sushi, sashimi, and Japanese fusion dishes. To take in that fresh sea air, lace up for a hike to Mugu Peak , a five-mile trek past meadows and mountains that leads to a panoramic ocean view.

Why We Love It: The SoCal town specializes in next-level luxury

In the high-end beach community of Montecito, which counts Oprah among its residents, the weeks-old Rosewood Miramar Beach promises luxury and seclusion from the wineries, restaurants, and State Street hubbub in Santa Barbara just five miles away. The resort feels more like an estate, with 161 rooms over 16 acres, plus seven restaurants, a yacht-inspired beach bar, the farm-to-table eatery Malibu Farm , two pools, The Gatehouse (a concept store curated by James Perse), and a Goop boutique, selling Gwyneth Paltrow–approved skin care, clothing, and gifts.

Want to really splash out? Book one of the eight seats in the restaurant-within-a-restaurant The Silver Bough at the Montecito Inn . For $550 per person (tax and gratuity included, phew!), each diner is treated to an 18-course meal with pairings—anything from bone-marrow-stuffed potato to dishes made with locally caught box crab—available Thursday through Sunday by reservation only (they’ll accommodate vegan and pescatarian menus upon request).

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

The Silver Bough

For a little more energy and walkability, head west to Santa Barbara for gourmet versions of Thai and Vietnamese street food at the new Tyger Tyger in the Funk Zone , a neighborhood of warehouses turned wineries and restaurants.

It’s about five hours via the Pacific Surfliner to Santa Barbara, with an ocean view most of the way. The station is conveniently located less than a mile from the Funk Zone, for wineries and restaurants and the Mediterranean-inspired Hotel California.

Joshua Tree

Why We Love It: Geek out beneath the night sky

Designated an International Dark Sky Park two years ago, Joshua Tree National Park is celebrating its fifth annual Night Sky Festival on September 21, pegged to the fall equinox. Tickets go on sale this summer for the event, which will have 20 telescopes, astronomy lectures, photo booths, music, nature walks, and crafts for kids. (The park website has some recommended night-sky etiquette, like using red flashlights instead of white.)

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

Find the eponymous trees in the northwestern section of Joshua Tree National Park.

When you’re not hiking, rock climbing, or observing the stars, check out the year-old boutique Shop on the Mesa , stocked with desert-chic decor, including many locally made pieces. And while options for food in town are limited to vegan eats at Natural Sisters Cafe and Pie for the People! pizza, make time for La Copine , a surprisingly polished restaurant in nearby Flamingo Heights started by a Philadelphia couple who honeymooned in Joshua Tree and fell in love with it, then took over an old diner. The menu has high-end fare like grilled flatbread with whipped ricotta and a lamb burger topped with harissa—a far cry from those campfire hot dogs.

Why We Love It: One tiny town packs a ton of eclectic festivals

Beyond its hippie ethos, famous “pink moment” sunsets, and the luxurious Ojai Valley Inn & Resort , the tiny town of Ojai (population 7,400) is also a hub for nearly a dozen annual festivals. Things kick off over Memorial Day Weekend with Art in the Park , a two-day celebration where nearly 100 fine artists sell their work in a show hosted by California’s oldest art nonprofit. On June 6, the 73rd annual Ojai Music Festival returns with four days of classical music at the Libbey Bowl amphitheater. This year’s event pays tribute to composers with ties to Ojai, including Igor Stravinsky. June 9 brings the Wine Festival , when more than 60 wineries and 30 breweries pour into town.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

No room? No problem. Access two pools, the gym, and locker amenities with Ojai Valley Inn & Resort’s $75 day pass (ages 16 and up).

Want to enjoy Ojai Valley’s bounty? The Lavender Festival on June 29 has local farmers selling soaps, oils, and decor made from the versatile flower. And due in August and October, respectively, the Playwrights Conference gives audiences a seat to workshop performances from new writers, while the Storytelling Festival brings together storytellers from across the country to perform personal narratives, ghost stories, folktales, and more. When you need some mid-festival fuel, be sure to visit the recently reopened cafe Hip Vegan for wholesome salads, sandwiches, smoothies, and desserts.

Death Valley

Why We Love It: Views that are so out-of-this-world, they’ve stood in for Star Wars planets

It may be the “hottest, driest, lowest national park,” but you’ll forget that when you’re splashing around the spring-fed pool at the revamped Oasis at Death Valley (formerly Furnace Creek Resort), the 92-year-old resort composed of Inn at Death Valley (66 rooms plus 22 casitas) and Ranch at Death Valley (geared toward families, with 224 rooms). The property just unveiled a $100 million makeover that includes refreshed rooms, a spa, and a new restaurant and cocktail lounge, all surrounded by date palms and sweeping mountain views.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

Oasis at Death Valley

You can book sunset and moonlight horseback riding excursions with Furnace Creek Stables or tee off at The Furnace Creek Golf Course . Within Death Valley National Park , see shooting locations from A New Hope and Return of the Jedi at Golden Canyon and Dante’s View terrace, or visit Badwater Basin to see otherworldly salt flats located at the lowest point in North America.

Why We Love It: The college town has grown up

Dated strip malls, fraternity life, and sugary margaritas no more—the affluent, history-rich hometown of the University of Arizona has recently gotten a fresh perspective thanks to an influx of young creatives. Shop for minimalist apparel and accessories at the MSA Annex (a collection of 13 shops housed in shipping containers), dine on Central Mexican cuisine at Penca Restaurante downtown, and grab a light meal at Exo Roast Co. , which uses local ingredients like barrel cactus jam and the cult favorite Barrio Bread. The award for most unique nightcap goes to The Owl’s Club , a hip, intimate cocktail bar located in a former funeral home.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

Amid all the new and cool, there are still the staples worth visiting, like Saguaro National Park , home to 25 varieties of cacti, including the namesake, which ranks as the tallest in the country, and Sabino Canyon , with its hiking trails, freshwater pools, and mini waterfalls. The retro-cool Hotel McCoy opened last summer with a pool and local art.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

Saguaro National Park

And side trip alert! It’s worth detouring two hours north to Phoenix for the all-day eatery Roland’s Cafe Market Bar , a joint venture between award-winning pizza pro Chris Bianco and the duo behind Tacos Chiwas. While there, stay at Arizona Biltmore , a favorite among US presidents that just commemorated its 90th year with a $35 million renovation. Take a happy hour history tour of the 39-acre property with your choice of two tipples—like a tequila sunrise (first created at the resort) and a Catalina Spritz (Marilyn Monroe’s favorite to sip poolside).

Eastern Sierra

Why We Love It: It’s an underappreciated playground for outdoor enthusiasts

Fancy a road trip within a road trip? Venture north near Sequoia National Park and begin your drive along the 395, a gateway to some of California’s most photogenic natural wonders. You’ll start in Lone Pine , an Old West town that’s home to the impressive rock formations of Alabama Hills , where movies like 2013’s The Lone Ranger were filmed, as well as Mount Whitney .

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

Iron Man, Django Unchained, and other movies have been filmed in Alabama Hills.

From there head an hour north to Bishop , known for its trout fishing and bouldering—there’s a women’s climbing event March 22–24. Great Basin Bakery is a homey, tasty option for bagels, sandwiches, pastries, and coffee. Making your way another hour north, bypass the tried-and-true Mammoth Lakes and opt for June Lake Loop . The landscape of the 15-mile drive looks straight out of the Swiss Alps, with plenty of cycling, fishing, and horseback riding to keep you busy. When you want to rest up, Double Eagle Resort & Spa is the winner, with comfortable cabins (pets allowed in some), a spa, and an indoor pool. If you want to trek even farther, head to Mono Lake , a serene, slightly spooky basin with boating and nature walks.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

Sin City is more than just casinos, pulsating nightclubs, and restaurants that’ll shrink your wallet. Here’s a guide to the other side of Vegas—sparkly dresses and AmEx black cards not necessary.

Skip the Buffets—Dine Downtown

Located five miles from the flash of the Strip is a set of restaurants and cocktail bars that are much friendlier to your bank account. (And frankly, who needs a dozen types of pancakes before noon?) Try pies made by a 12-time pizza world champion at Pizza Rock or Asian-influenced chicken dishes at Flock & Fowl from James Beard–nominated, Joël Robuchon–trained chef Sheridan Su.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

Fremont East

Forget Club Hopping—Go Cocktail Bar Hopping

Instead of succumbing to bottle service, try the numerous zero-fuss bars around town, beginning with Herbs & Rye , a locally loved steakhouse with great happy hour deals. Then head north to Frankie’s Tiki Room for potent tropical tipples. When you cross east into the Arts District, the dimly lit Velveteen Rabbit will please everyone from cheap beer drinkers to cocktail connoisseurs. Finish the night at Atomic Liquors , a staple spot known for beer cocktails.

Don’t Walk the Strip—Stroll the Museums

Vegas culture goes beyond Lady Gaga concerts and Cirque du Soleil performances. At the Neon Museum , visit the Neon Boneyard, an alfresco collection of iconic neon signs collected from casinos, restaurants, and elsewhere. This fall, director Tim Burton will bring his original fine art to the space. The Mob Museum traces the history of organized crime in Las Vegas and throughout the country with hands-on forensic exhibits, preserved artifacts, and a working speakeasy and distillery to better explain the seedy side of the Prohibition era—and serve thirsty museum-goers.

Why We Love It: Newcomers are bucking the Napa traditions you used to know

You’ve ridden the wine train, dipped in the mud baths, and been denied a reservation at The French Laundry. Thanks to a crop of up-and-comers, Napa locales surrounded by old vines are finally keeping up with the times. On the northern tip of the region, Healdsburg’s Harmon Guest House , a boutique with 39 rooms, opened last fall; so did Vista Collina Resort on the southern end. The latter boasts “The Village,” a lawn next to a food and wine center with cooking classes and nine tasting rooms, where you can even support San Diegan Tim Bacino at Gen7 .

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

Vista Collina Resort

Indulge in buttermilk fried chicken at Yountville’s Addendum , a counter-service offshoot of Ad Hoc (itself known for chef Thomas Keller’s simple prix fixe dinner), before beginning your tasting. Robert Mondavi and Grgich Hills are a good place to start. Purchase a Wine Priority Pass online to help pare down the rest of your reservations with deals like two-for-one tastings at select wineries. Ashes & Diamonds ’ made-for-Instagram tasting room nails a midcentury-modern aesthetic as an homage to the era when wines really put the valley on the map.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

And while most of wine country calls it quits around 5 p.m., there’s the updated Villagio Bar & Lounge in Yountville and Sky & Vine Rooftop Bar atop the Archer Hotel in downtown Napa, both of which stay up late for the die-hard oenophiles.

Why We Love It: It’s one of the country’s most famous R&R spots for a reason

This pine-forest oasis in the scorching Southwest is famous among New Age and alt-medicine circles for its four “vortexes,” said to be natural centers of earth energy and enlightenment. Start with a psychic reading and aura photo from Mystical Bazaar . At ChocolaTree , nourish your physical body with an organic, homemade, largely vegan menu with gluten-free and raw options. For affordable crystals and geodes, brave the tourist crowds downtown for Discount Gems & Minerals —and enjoy the public-use marimbas just outside.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

Marg’s Draw makes for an easy afternoon hike; or for a steeper trek, Cathedral Rock Trail brings you to one of the fabled vortexes. Once you’ve hit peak serenity, lay your head in one of Sky Ranch Lodge Resort ’s private cabins with a back porch that opens up to stunning views of the red-rock-bluff valley.

San Francisco

Why We Love It: A new nonprofit restaurant is all the buzz

For 14 years, La Cocina has served as an incubator for food entrepreneurs in the saturated, uber-costly market of San Francisco. Their mission is to offer immigrant women and women of color affordable commercial kitchen space and technical assistance to build their businesses. So far, their efforts have helped launch several well-loved restaurants in the Bay Area: There’s the Lebanese-Syrian bakery  Reem’s California and Cambodian Nyum Bai in Oakland, Southern food translated into sandwiches at  Pinky & Red’s in Berkeley, and vegan tamales at  Alicia’s Tamales Los Mayas in Hayward.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

Tilden Hotel

This summer, the incubator will debut  La Cocina Municipal Market  in San Francisco’s ever-changing Tenderloin neighborhood to showcase the many small businesses they’ve fostered. In the same neighborhood, the  Tilden Hotel ’s minimalist design and suave in-house speakeasy are a welcome respite from the city’s hubbub. Hotel Emblem  on the border between Nob Hill and Union Square just opened in January, paying tribute to the Beat Generation in decor and activities. They offer Meditation Hour every Saturday, a book butler program, and poetry slam nights, when guests are encouraged to take the stage.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

Hotel Emblem

Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge, Big Sur’s crucial connection to the outside world, reopened after a mudslide closed it down for eight months in 2017. Many of the hotels—like Post Ranch Inn and Ventana Big Sur—used that time to execute multimillion-dollar renovations. (Hello, glamping tents!) To really take in the scene, sign up for the Big Sur Marathon, taking place April 28 along Highway 1. The highlight is the tuxedo-clad pianist playing on a baby grand along the Bixby Bridge.

National Treasures

There’s no time like the present to show some love for our national parks. Here are three road-trip-friendly excursions, plus one longer haul that’s worth every mile.

Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon celebrates its 100th year as a national park in 2019 with events all year long. Highlights include the Centennial Summerfest and Star Party June 22–29 and a music festival August 25–26. The South Rim, a little over eight hours by car, offers that classic postcard landscape, but is also notoriously crowded. Opt for the more secluded North Rim , which is open after the snow melts from May to October and boasts vibrant foliage in the fall.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

Under Canvas

You can make a home away from home with Under Canvas , a company that sets up glamping tents with a shower, sink, and flush toilet from late April to mid-November just outside the park in Valle, Arizona. (Their other locations include Yellowstone, Glacier, and Zion national parks, as well as Tucson, Mount Rushmore, Moab, and the Smoky Mountains.) After the arid areas, quench your visual thirst with a two-hour trip north to Lake Powell , a reservoir in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area that straddles the Arizona-Utah border, where you can swim, kayak, and hike.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

Lake Powell

Eight hours from San Diego, Yosemite is all about the granite peaks and cliffs, especially El Capitan and Half Dome , which is why it’s such a draw for rock climbers. If you’re new to the sport or need a brush-up, REI’s Kearny Mesa store is hosting a Preparing for Half Dome class on March 2 with tips on gear, routes, and training. Otherwise, Half Dome’s summit is reachable on foot—if you’ve had a couple days to adjust to the altitude and start the 17-mile hike at the crack of dawn, that is.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

Yosemite National Park

For an easier trail, seeing the supersize sequoias in Mariposa Grove is a must, and the park also offers a five-hour tour bus option departing from Yosemite Valley Lodge May through September. The Majestic Yosemite Hotel , formerly the Ahwahnee, is the quintessential stay, but if you want to get a taste without the triple-digit commitment, lunch in their grand dining room will give you the flavor.

For fun and inexpensive lodging minutes outside the park, stay in a yurt (sleeps four to six) at Yosemite Lakes RV Resort , complete with bathroom, kitchen, gas grill, and even cable TV.

Zion National Park

About eight hours from San Diego, Zion was Utah’s first national park—now there are five—and it has some of the state’s most famous trails. Check out the waterfalls of Emerald Pools , and The Narrows , a gorge with walls reaching thousands of feet high that requires “hiking” through a river. Or let someone else do the trekking for you: Local operators like Zion Ponderosa offer horseback riding trips into the park.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

When you want to rest those weary limbs, you can camp ( Lava Point and Watchman are popular sites) or stay at the only in-park accommodation, Zion Lodge , in a cabin, hotel room, or suite surrounded by towering trees and red rock mountains.

Redwood National & State Parks

What a trip to the Redwoods costs in 800 miles worth of gas, it makes up for with the staggering sight of the world’s largest trees. The national park, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, is unlike many others in that there’s no entrance station or fee, and portions of it overlap with the state park, for which daily use fees apply.

21 Ultimate Road Trip Itineraries from San Diego

Redwood National & State Parks

One of the best places to see the trees is the moderately challenging 4.2-mile James Irvine Trail in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park , which ends at Fern Canyon , a lush area (albeit redwood-free) marked by a footbridge that’s open in summer months. Or hop back in the car and drive the steep 17 miles down Bald Hills Road to see old-growth redwoods, wildflowers in the spring, and if you’re lucky, Roosevelt elk.

A road trip from Idaho to California promises to be an exciting adventure. From the serene landscapes of Idaho to the sun-soaked beauty of California’s coastline, travelers will be treated to a wealth of diverse attractions. You can see majestic mountains and stunning national parks, and you can also spend some time in iconic cities steeped in culture and history.

Below are three options for a road trip from Idaho to California designed to suit every traveler’s preferences, interests, and time frame. Whether you’re drawn to bustling cities, stunning natural wonders, or outdoor activities, each route has lots to choose from and plenty to see and experience.

Road Trip from Idaho to California Option 1: Boise to Los Angeles

Distance: 1050 miles Approx Driving Time: 15 hours Major Points Of Interest: Shoshone Falls, Salt Lake City, Bryce Canyon National Park, Zion National Park, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Hoover Dam

From the vibrant city of Boise, Idaho to the bustling metropolis of Los Angeles, California, this road trip option is a great choice for those who want a combination of outdoor adventure and fun city life.

This route will take you through a variety of landscapes, from the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains to the allure of the desert in the southwest. Here’s a glimpse of what this adventure has in store.

Boise, Idaho

Your journey begins in Boise, the capital city of Idaho. Known for its friendly atmosphere and outdoor recreational opportunities, Boise is a fantastic starting point for a road trip.

Take some time to explore the city’s vibrant downtown, visit the Boise River Greenbelt , and perhaps even tour the Old Idaho Penitentiary or the Idaho State Capitol Building .

Shoshone Falls in Twin Falls, Idaho is a great stop on your road trip from Idaho to California

Shoshone Falls

Head south and make a stop in Twin Falls, Idaho, which is home to the awe-inspiring Shoshone Falls .

These falls, often dubbed the “Niagara of the West” because of their impressive horseshoe shape, are one of the largest natural waterfalls in the United States and surpass the famous Niagara Falls in height. It’s an ideal spot to take a break, stretch your legs, and enjoy the breathtaking views.

if you want to do something a little more adventurous, rent a kayak and see the falls from below, or simply take a walk along the Canyon Rim Trail to get a little exercise with some stunning scenery.

Salt Lake City

Continuing your journey, you’ll arrive in Salt Lake City, Utah’s capital.

Take some time to immerse yourself in the rich history of the city by visiting Temple Square or venture out to explore the stunning Antelope Island State Park or the scenic Big Cottonwood Canyon .

Bryce Canyon National Park

Heading further south, Bryce Canyon National Park is the perfect place for a stop.

With its dramatic rock formations, unique hoodoos, and horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters, Bryce Canyon is home to some of the most interesting landscapes in the US. There are plenty of short but scenic trails where you can get up close to the hoodoos and take in the stunning natural beauty. Or take a day or two and dive deeper unto the park and see as much as you can!

Zion National Park

As you head southwest, prepare to be amazed by the natural wonder of Zion National Park .

This iconic park boasts towering red rock formations and offers incredible hiking opportunities through slot canyons. It’s a must-visit for nature enthusiasts.

If you are interested in hiking the popular Angel’s Landing trek, you will need a permit. You can find out more information on the NPS website here .

The Grand Canyon National Park

Grand Canyon National Park

While en route to Los Angeles, consider a slight detour to Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. This jaw-dropping marvel is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and if you haven’t been yet, you should make the time to go when you are this close!

There is so much to see here, so depending on how much time you have, you could do something as simple as swinging by one of the overlooks (I recommend Mather Point along the South Rim) and taking a peek and a picture, or you could take some extra time and do a hike, take a mule trip, or even get your adrenaline fix with a whitewater rafting adventure.

Valley of Fire State Park is a great stop from Idaho to California

Valley of Fire State Park

Before hitting Las Vegas, take some time to explore the stunning Valley of Fire State Park .

This is Nevada’s oldest and largest state park. It’s known for its unique red and pink rock formations, panoramic views, and petroglyphs dating back more than 2,000 years.

There is plenty to see from the car if you’d rather just drive through, or you could opt for a short hike through Petroglyph Canyon or to Elephant Rock for even more amazing views.

When I was here it was super hot so I didn’t get to explore much, but it was so pretty I’m itching to go back and give it the time it deserves on my next visit.

No road trip to California would be complete without a stop in Las Vegas, Nevada .

The famous Las Vegas strip awaits, offering a dazzling array of entertainment, shows, and casinos. Take in the bright lights and lively atmosphere or try your luck at the slot machines. They are pretty much around every corner!

Even if you don’t really gamble or drink (like me), there are so many fantastic shows to see, and the hotels themselves are worth wandering around to view. I recommend the Cirque du Soleil shows or the Tournament of Kings, but there really is an option for everyone, including families.

The Hoover Dam is a good day trip from Las Vegas

While in Las Vegas, be sure to visit the Hoover Dam , an engineering marvel that’s a testament to human ingenuity.

Located 45 minutes outside of Las Vegas on the border between Nevada and Arizona, the Hoover Dam holds back the mighty Colorado River, but it’s also worth seeing the natural scenery of the surrounding area.

Personally, I’d make a plan to either see the dam on the way out of Vegas or find something else to do in the area before or after, like a kayaking trip . The dam is worth a quick peek, but I don’t think it’s worth driving from the city just to see it and then driving back unless it’s on your bucket list or you want to take a tour inside the power plant .

Red Rock Canyon is a perfect day trip from Las Vegas on your road trip from Idaho to California

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

With its vivid colors and spectacular scenery, Red Rock Canyon is another must-see day trip while visiting Las Vegas.

Hike one of the many trails or follow the Scenic Loop Drive for stunning views of the red rock mountains that give the park its name. You don’t need a ton of time here, but if you want to get out of the city and stretch your legs, this is a great place to do it.

Mojave National Preserve in California

Mojave National Preserve

Continuing south into California from Vegas, the Mojave National Preserve is another stunning sight to see on this route. Drive past the unique scenery, explore the Kelso Dunes, and marvel at all the Joshua Trees.

Los Angeles

This road trip route concludes in the bustling city of Los Angeles, California .

Dive into the glamor of Hollywood , relax on the stunning beaches, and visit iconic attractions such as the Griffith Observatory and Universal Studios . You could spend as long as you want to here and never run out of things to see and do.

Road Trip from Idaho to California Option 2: Coeur d’Alene to Los Angeles

Setting out on a road trip from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to Los Angeles, California takes you on a journey through some of the West’s most captivating landscapes and iconic destinations.

Here are some of the highlights of this unforgettable route, which is filled with natural wonders and cultural gems.

san diego to idaho road trip

Goldbug Hot Springs

As you leave Coeur d’Alene, you’ll swing into Montana for a bit and then head back into Idaho. Once you hit North Fork, you’ll follow the beautiful Salmon River through some of the state’s most gorgeous scenery.

As you head south, consider stopping at Goldbug Hot Springs , a not-so-hidden gem nestled in the Salmon-Challis National Forest. These natural hot springs offer a tranquil oasis amidst the wilderness with a million-dollar view.

To reach the springs, there’s a two-mile fairly steep trail, but it’s easy to follow and the reward is well worth the effort. Soak in the soothing, geothermal heated pools while being surrounded by lush greenery and the sound of cascading waterfalls.

While I highly recommend Goldbug Hot Springs, a few things to note:

  • It can get very crowded here as this hot spring is not a secret anymore. If you want the most private experience possible, go really early on a weekday.
  • The beginning of the trail is on private property, so even though you should be respectful no matter what, keep this in mind as you walk through that section.
  • These springs are clothing-optional, and a lot of people will take advantage of this. Just keep this in mind when you visit, and if it bothers you, reconsider going.

The Sawtooth Mountains are worth a long stopover on your Idaho to California road trip

Stanley & The Sawtooth Mountains

Stanley, Idaho is a charming mountain town nestled in the heart of the Sawtooth Mountains and is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.

You can explore the pristine waters of Redfish Lake , go hiking or mountain biking on scenic trails, and enjoy world-class fishing. Be sure to visit the picturesque Stanley Lake , where the Sawtooth Mountains reflect beautifully on the crystal-clear waters. There are also over 10 hot springs within a 2-hour drive of the town, making it the perfect base for hitting as many as you can.

Stanley was probably one of our favorite stops on our out-west road trip. We spent 3 days in the Sawtooth Mountains and wished we would have had more time. I recommend at least 2 full days here, but even if you can only pass through, you won’t regret it!

Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve

As you leave the Sawtooth National Forest, take a fascinating detour to the Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve . It will make you feel like you’ve landed on another planet!

Explore the surreal volcanic landscape with its cinder cones and lava flows on one of the short trails, or camp overnight where you’ll have even more opportunities to explore.

Continue south through Idaho to the awe-inspiring Shoshone Falls , often referred to as the “Niagara of the West.” With its horseshoe-shaped falls, it’s easy to see where these falls get their nickname from. Witness the power and beauty of these cascading waters, a true gem of the Snake River.

If you have a little more time, check out Perrine Memorial Bridge and get a great view of it and the Snake River Canyon from the Canyon Rim Trail .

Once you pass into Nevada, make a quick stop in Elko , a town that captures the essence of the Wild West.

Nestled amid the Ruby Mountains and the Great Basin Desert, Elko offers a unique blend of natural beauty and Western heritage. Be sure to visit one of the local steakhouses, where you can savor hearty cowboy cuisine.

Ready for the Ultimate SD Road Trip? What You Need to Know to Make It Epic!

Embarking on a road trip to San Diego promises an adventure filled with sun-kissed beaches, breathtaking landscapes, and unforgettable experiences. But how do you ensure your journey is as smooth as the Pacific Coast Highway? Let's dive into the essentials that will make your trip to America's Finest City a breeze.

Planning Your Route: The Road Less Traveled Can Be a Game Changer

When it comes to road trips, the journey is just as important as the destination. Before you hit the road, a bit of planning can go a long way. Start by mapping out your route to San Diego. While the fastest route might seem appealing, don't shy away from the scenic paths. Discover hidden gems by taking detours through charming small towns or along coastal roads. These unexpected stops can turn into highlights of your trip.

Equally crucial is timing your travel. San Diego is beautiful year-round, but its attractions can get crowded during peak seasons. Consider traveling during the shoulder months—spring or fall—when the weather is still pleasant and the crowds are thinner. Also, check for any road closures or construction that could affect your journey. A well-planned route will save you time and stress, allowing you to soak in every moment of your adventure.

The Vehicle: Ensuring Your Ride is Road-Trip Ready

The vehicle you choose is your chariot, carrying you to your coastal haven. Whether driving your car or opting for a car rental in San Diego , ensuring your ride is in top condition is crucial. Start with a thorough check-up: oil change, tire pressure, brakes, and battery. For those long stretches of road, comfort is key. Clean out your car to make space for luggage and ensure your seats are comfortable for the hours ahead. If you're not bringing your vehicle, San Diego offers a variety of car rental options. Choosing a reliable and comfortable car will make your journey much smoother. Remember, the right vehicle can transform your road trip from mundane to extraordinary.

Packing Essentials: Less is More, But Don't Forget the Must-Haves

Packing for a road trip is an art form. The goal is to balance being prepared and having enough space to breathe. Start with the basics: clothing that's comfortable and adaptable to San Diego's climate. Even though it's famous for its sunny weather, nights can get cool, especially by the beach, so pack accordingly. Don't forget your essentials: sunscreen, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.

Entertainment and snacks are road trip must-haves. Create a playlist of your favorite tunes or download audiobooks and podcasts to keep everyone entertained. Healthy snacks and a few indulgences will keep the energy up and reduce stops along the way. Lastly, ensure you have all necessary documents, including your driver's license, registration, and insurance. A well-packed car ensures a comfortable ride, allowing you to focus on the adventure ahead, not what you left behind.

Car Detailing: Elevate Your Ride Inside Out Before Hitting SD

Imagine cruising down to San Diego in a car that’s not just road-trip ready but gleaming, inside and out. This is where car detailing comes into play, transforming your vehicle from a mere mode of transport to a luxurious part of your adventure. With its laid-back vibe and impeccable weather, San Diego is the perfect backdrop for a ride that shines. But why settle for any detailing service when you can opt for car detailing in San Diego that will even come to you? Mobile detailing services offer the ultimate convenience, allowing you to get your car pampered without interrupting your pre-trip preparations. These professionals do more than a simple wash; they deep clean, polish, and protect every inch of your vehicle, ensuring it looks and feels fresh for your journey. From the sparkling exterior to the spotless interior, a detailed car enhances your road trip experience, setting the stage for an unforgettable entry into San Diego. It's not just about the aesthetics; a clean car provides a more comfortable and healthier environment for your travel. So, treat your ride to a professional detailing service and arrive in style, ready to explore the wonders of San Diego.

Embracing San Diego's Vibe: The Local Secrets to Enjoying Your Stay

Upon arriving in San Diego, the real adventure begins. To truly embrace the local vibe, dive into the experiences that make this city unique. It's not just about visiting popular attractions like the San Diego Zoo or Balboa Park, though they are must-sees. San Diego's soul lies in its neighborhoods, each with its own flavor and charm. Spend a day exploring the Gaslamp Quarter's vibrant nightlife, or relax in the laid-back beach towns of La Jolla and Ocean Beach. Local farmers' markets, like the one in Little Italy, offer a taste of the region's fresh produce and artisanal goods, perfect for a picnic on the beach.

To connect with the local culture, participate in activities that San Diegans love. Try surfing at one of the many renowned surf spots along the coast or take a leisurely bike ride along the boardwalks. San Diego's culinary scene is a blend of influences, especially its famous Mexican food. Don't miss out on trying fish tacos from a beachside stand or enjoying a craft beer at one of the city's numerous microbreweries. Engaging with the community by attending local events, festivals, or outdoor concerts can also enrich your experience.

14 Unique Stops To Make On A Road Trip From LA To San Diego

Four Electric Pickup Trucks Drove Coast-To-Coast. Here's How They Stack Up

The top four electric trucks you can buy in 2024 get put through their paces in this florida to san diego road trip..

EV Truck Race

Over the past few weeks, the crew at the Out of Spec Motoring YouTube channel has provided a wealth of great information on the current lineup of EV trucks and their capabilities . While the Rivian R1T and Ford F-150 Lightning are a fairly known quantity at this point, seeing them compete against the recently released Chevy Silverado EV and Tesla Cybertruck has been interesting to watch.

In their latest vehicle comparison, four teams get behind the wheel and pit these EV trucks against one another in a coast-to-cost race from Florida to California.

Get Fully Charged

The EV truck market is growing

EV trucks aim to fill a crucial niche for American buyers. But whether they can hold up to the demands of towing and hauling without losing too much range remains to be seen with several new models.

In part one of this series, we get a good demonstration of each truck’s capabilities on a long-distance road trip. While each truck has its strengths, they share one major hiccup: various charging issues and limitations. Not even the Cybertruck was able to provide a completely seamless charging experience.

Thanks to a massive battery pack size, the Chevy Silverado EV’s first charging stop came much later than the other trucks. This despite beginning the race 6 miles behind and at a lower state of charge than the rest.

Unfortunately, the Silverado EV can currently only fast charge at CCS stations, limiting the team’s options, although this limitation should soon be lifted as General Motors’ EVs go to the Tesla NACS plug soon . Team Chevy’s first stop was at an Electrify America (EA) station where one of the Hyper Fast units (which peaks at 350 kW) was out of service and the other station was occupied.

With only four stalls this could have been a major issue. To avoid charging on the slower 150 kW units, the team offered to pay for the other EV driver’s charge if they swapped spots. Additionally, the Silverado ran into an issue where turning on the A/C resulted in charging speed fluctuations. This is likely a software bug that needs to be remedied in future software updates.

EV Truck Race

The Tesla Cybertruck also performed well in the initial leg of this road trip. The team did criticize the Cybertruck’s top charging speed of 250 kW compared to competitors. But they were pleasantly surprised to find the charge curve has improved following earlier complaints .

Because the Cybertruck relies heavily on slippery aerodynamics for range, strong winds and heavy rain impacted efficiency enough that they had to charge earlier than planned.

After stopping, they found the Cybertruck would not initiate a charge. Moving to a different unit did the trick in this case. However, the F-150 pulled up shortly after and successfully charged at the same unit that initially failed for the Cybertruck.

On the next Supercharging stop, this issue occurred again. It seems that the truck was not quite ready to accept a charge immediately after parking. Their solution was to park the vehicle and wait a few seconds before plugging in. Thankfully this is an issue that is unlikely to occur for drivers casually charging their trucks day to day.

The Ford F-150 team noted that they do not trust the truck’s range estimates or the expected battery buffer when driving long distances. They had been stranded by the F-150 not once but twice in the recent past. So they were not willing to run the pack down to 2 or 3% like the other teams.

With a max charge speed of only 150 kW, the F-150’s charging often seemed erratic on this trip, and they consulted Tom Moloughney for help optimizing future fast charging sessions. They also had to switch units at a Supercharger to hit their max charge speed.

Like the Cybertruck, the R1T’s efficiency was impacted by the heavy storms in the early part of the race. As a result, they had to reduce their speed early to reach their first charger. At this first stop, they had their EA session cut short after only a minute of charging. This is unfortunately a pretty common occurrence with EA stations.

Despite the charger troubleshooting, every team has made good progress, already trading first place multiple times. We will be keeping an eye on the rest of this series to see which EV truck comes out on top.

Which one would be your pick in 2024?

Distance between San Diego and Idaho Falls

Driving non-stop from san diego to idaho falls.

How far is Idaho Falls from San Diego? Here's the quick answer if you have friends taking shifts as driver so that you can make the entire trip by car without stopping.

Nonstop drive: 962 miles or 1548 km

Driving time: 14 hours, 22 minutes

This is a really long drive, so it's not very realistic to drive nonstop. To get a better idea of how long this road trip would actually take, scroll down to calculate how many hours it would be if you drive with stops .

Flying non-stop from San Diego to Idaho Falls

Now let's assume you have a private jet and you can fly in the fastest possible straight line between San Diego, California and Idaho Falls, Idaho. Because of the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the "great circle" distance, or "as the crow flies" which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula. For a long distance, this appears as a curve on the map, and this is often the route that commercial airlines will take so it's a good estimate of the frequent flyer miles you'll accumulate as well.

Flight distance: 794 miles or 1277 km

Flight time: 2 hours, 5 minutes

The straight line flight distance is 168 miles less than driving on roads, which means the driving distance is roughly 1.2x of the flight distance.

Your plane flies much faster than a car, so the flight time is about 1/7th of the time it would take to drive.

This is a medium length flight, so unless you have a nice private jet, you might be booking a commercial flight. In that case, your travel time would really need to include how many minutes to get to your local airport, wait for security, board and taxi on the runway, land at the other airport, and get to your destination. Scroll down to see a more realistic calculation that takes into account all these factors to get a more accurate estimate of your actual flight time .

San Diego to Idaho Falls road trip

Let's say you're actually planning a road trip to Idaho Falls, and you want to stop along the way to rest. If it's a real road trip, you might want to check out interesting stops along the way, eat at great restaurants, and maybe even find a hotel to stay overnight. That's what Trippy is perfect for, helping you figure out travel plans in detail.

Based on the length of this trip, we think you could spread out this fun road trip over more than one day.

Road trip: 2 days of driving

With the full itinerary planned out, we can estimate your total travel time for this trip.

Travel time: 15.5 hours on the road with 1 overnight

Start in San Diego .

Drive for about 3 hours , then stop in Barstow and stay for about 1 hour. Next, drive for another 2.5 hours then stop in Las Vegas and stay for 4 hours. Drive for 2.5 hours then stop in Cedar City (Utah) . Stay overnight. The next day, drive for about 2.5 hours , then stop in Manti and stay for about 1 hour. Next, drive for another 2 hours then stop in Salt Lake City and stay for 2.5 hours. Drive for 2.5 hours then stop in Pocatello and stay for 1 hour. Finally, drive for about 45 minutes and arrive in Idaho Falls .

San Diego to Idaho Falls airports and flights

In the quick calculation above, we assumed you had a private plane and just wanted to know the time in the air from city to city. But for most of us, we're going to be flying on a commercial airline (whether it's first class or coach). So that means we really need to account for all the extra travel time getting to the airport, waiting for our flight, and making it to the destination.

To give you a better estimate of real-life travel, we've put together a flight itinerary with actual airports. Eventually you'll be able to customize this plan, choosing your own airports and flights. But for now, here's an example we've selected to give you an idea of how traveling might work between airports.

Departure airport: San Diego International Airport (SAN)

Arrival airport: Idaho Falls Regional Airport (IDA)

With the airports selected, we can estimate the travel time to and from the airport, based on how far the airport is from downtown.

Getting to the airport: 6 minutes

Getting to your destination: 6 minutes

Now finally, let's look at an example flight from SAN to IDA and figure out how long it would take to fly including take-off and landing, and time to taxi on the runway.

Commercial flight time: 2 hours, 5 minutes

So now we can finally get an idea of the total travel time from San Diego to Idaho Falls including time spent getting to/from the airports, an estimated wait time of 2 hours at the airport for TSA security lines and waiting at the gate, and the actual flight itself.

Total travel time: 4 hours
