The school visit: what to look for, what to ask

The school visit: what to look for, what to ask

Be sure to visit all the schools on your list, if you can. A visit is the best way to determine whether a school is right for your child. Even a short visit will help you identify a school’s strengths and challenges. It’s also the only way to get a feel for a school’s climate — intangible but important factors like the dynamism of the teaching, engagement of the students, quality of communication, level of respect between students, teachers, administrators, and parents, and the overall sense that the school offers a safe and inspiring learning environment .

School visit checklists

Use this printable guide to help you plan your elementary, middle, or high school visit.

Before your visit

  • Do your homework. Read about the schools you’ll be visiting. Examine their school profiles on GreatSchools.org. Talk to other parents and check your local newspaper for articles about the schools.
  • Contact the school.  Most schools conduct regular school tours and open houses during the enrollment season — typically in the fall. Call the school or go online to schedule a visit.
  • Ask and observe. Jot down your questions before your visit (the sample questions below will help you create your list).

Key questions to ask

  • Does this school have a particular educational philosophy or mission?
  • What curriculum does the school use for math, reading, science, etc? Ask if the school follows the Common Core State Standards , Next Generation Science Standards , and which program(s) are they using to teach children to read ?
  • What is the average class size ?
  • What is this school’s approach to student discipline and safety? Do they practice restorative justice ? Are the discipline practices fair for families of color ? Do they practice corporal punishment , and if so, can you opt out of that for your child?
  • How much homework do students have? What is the school’s philosophy/approach to homework ?
  • What kind of library resources are available to students?
  • How is technology used to support teaching and learning at this school?
  • How do the arts fit into the curriculum? Is there a school choir, band or orchestra? A drama program? Art classes?
  • What extracurricular opportunities (sports, clubs, community service, competitions) are available for students?
  • How do students get to school? Is free school busing available?
  • Is bullying a problem at the school? Does the school have an anti-bullying policy ?
  • Does the school have a program for gifted students ?
  • How does this school support students who have academic, social or emotional difficulties?
  • What strategies are used to teach students who are not fluent in English?
  • What professional development opportunities do teachers have ? In what ways do teachers collaborate?
  • Does the school offer Physical Education (PE) classes?
  • What are some of the school’s greatest accomplishments? What are some of the biggest challenges this school faces?

Features to look for

  • Do classrooms look cheerful? Is student work displayed, and does it seem appropriate for the grade level?
  • Do teachers seem enthusiastic and knowledgeable, asking questions that stimulate students and keep them engaged?
  • Does the principal seem confident and interested in interacting with students, teachers and parents?
  • How do students behave as they move from class to class or play outside?
  • Is there an active Parent Teacher Association (PTA) ? What other types of parent involvement take place at this school?
  • How well are the facilities maintained? Are bathrooms clean and well supplied, and do the grounds look safe and inviting?

Especially for elementary schools

  • What are some highlights of this school’s curriculum in reading , math, science and social studies?
  • What criteria are used to determine student placement in classes?
  • How does this school keep parents informed of school information and activities? Are they easy to communicate with ?
  • Does the school let parents know what their rights are (and aren’t ) in regards to your child’s education?
  • Is quality child care available before and after school?
  • How much outdoor time do kids get each day?

 Especially for middle schools

  • How does the school guide and prepare students for major academic decisions that will define their options in high school and beyond? Do they provide advice to parents on how to help this age group ?
  • Does the school offer tutoring or other support if students need extra help?
  • Are world language classes (French, Spanish, etc.) offered to students?
  • If the school is large, does it make an effort to provide activities that create a sense of community ?

Especially for high schools

  • Does this school have a particular curriculum focus, such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) or the arts?
  • What kind of emphasis does the school place on college preparation ?
  • Does the school have a good selection of Advanced Placement (AP) and honors classes?
  • What percentage of students take the SAT or/and ACT ?
  • Where do students go after they graduate? How many attend four-year college? Are graduates prepared for college ?
  • Are counselors available to help students make important decisions about classes?
  • Is college counseling and support available?
  • Does the school offer a variety of career planning options for students who are not college bound?
  • Does the school staff set high expectations for all students?
  • Does the school have a tutoring program so students can get extra help if they need it?
  • How do students get to school? Is there a parking lot, and are buses (public or district-provided) available?
  • Does this school have any school-to-work programs or specialized academies ?
  • What is the school drop-out rate ?

Especially for charter schools

  • When and why was this school created ?
  • Does the school have a specific focus?
  • Who is the charter holder, or the group that created the school?
  • How does the school select teachers? Are the teachers certificated?
  • Is this the permanent location or facility for the school? If not, will the school be moving to another location in the near future?

Hello!! I'm Molly!!

classroom tour: a peek inside my 5th grade classroom.

Update: For a more recent classroom tour, check out my recent Youtube video!

Two years ago I switched schools and moved into a brand new (to me) classroom! Although I’ve posted many pictures of my room on my Instagram account, I haven’t done a classroom tour blog post yet, so I figured I’d round up some of my favorite classroom photos over the last two years to give you a closer peek into the space I spend most of my days during the school year! I rearranged a few things during these past couple years (got rid of my teacher desk, moved our small group table and mailboxes, etc.), but hopefully these pictures give you a general idea of my classroom environment! I’ve also included some affiliate links to help you easily find the resources I use and love in my classroom!

Classroom Library

Our classroom library is my favorite part of the classroom! You can read more about my classroom library and how it is organized in my post here !

Classroom Stage

After visiting the Ron Clark Academy, I just knew I had to get a stage in my classroom! I had a wonderful parent of a student volunteer to build one for me and my students absolutely LOVE it! They have lots of opportunities to stand on the stage and teach the class and share their learning!

A classroom tour of a colorful, 5th grade classroom

Small Group Area

This school year I got rid of my teacher desk and moved our small group table where my desk used to be! I meet with small groups frequently throughout the day, and when I’m not meeting with groups, students love to come and work at this table! In the fall I got a whiteboard table to replace this table, which is amazing! Students love writing on it, especially during our math small groups!

Desk Arrangement

I went from teaching at a school with smaller class sizes to one with larger class sizes, so figuring out how to arrange student desks was a challenge! I like to have my students sitting in groups, and over the past two years I’ve had desks in groups with 4-9 students at each group!

My students are constantly collaborating throughout the day, so it is important for me to have them sitting in groups where there can easily discuss ideas and work together. I have a supply caddy in the middle of each team, and each student has a cup to keep their pencils, erasers, and other supplies that we use on a regular basis.

Student Mailboxes

I inherited these student mailboxes from another teacher, however since I have more students in my class now, I had to get another smaller set of student mailboxes to stack under the original ones! I number student mailboxes by gluing numbers on binder clips ( see my blog post all about it ). Students store their iPad keyboards in their mailboxes, in addition to any mail that gets passed out to go home.

Student Photo Wall

Our student photo wall takes up half of the back wall of our classroom and is full of student photos with their favorite inspirational quotes and goals! You can read more about it + get the template here !

Writing Wall

Quote Quick Writes are a great way to combine daily writing and character education!

Our writing wall is a place to display amazing student writing! I bought the writing letters at Jo-Ann’s Fabrics and spray painted them with silver glitter spray paint. Then I hot-glued thumb tacks to the back of them so they would stay up on the wall!

Scholastic Magazine Classroom Feature

My classroom is my home-away-from-home, and I love making it a comfortable, colorful, and functional place for my students and myself. Last year I was honored to have my classroom featured in Scholastic Magazine! You can read parts of the article and see pictures from that photoshoot here !

Here is a list of resources that I’ve used in my classroom!

  • Classroom Library Labels
  • Name tags on student chairs
  • Chalkboard numbers for Leadership League
  • Accountable Talk bulletin board
  • Book Recommendation Cards
  • Inspirational Classroom Posters

I hope you enjoyed my classroom tour! I love our classroom space and already have a few new ideas in mind for next year! A special thanks to Stephen Simpson for the first and last classroom pictures in this post!

What a beautiful classroom! I love all the colors.

I absolutely LOVE your classroom decor! I’m going to be starting my first year as an Autism teacher in August and have been obsessed with colorful classrooms. Your’s is by far my favorite! I’m wondering where you got that super cute map? It’s ADORABLE

Hi Macy! Thank you so much! I actually made the made the map! I posted a tutorial here with lots of step-by-step pictures!!! https://lessonswithlaughter.com///colorful-united-states-map-tutorial/

I’m completely in love with your classroom!! It’s so so pretty!! I wish my class was like yours, I’m sure my kids would have lots of fun!

Thank you SO much, Elena! It took several years of purchasing teaching supplies, books, and materials! My classroom during my first year teaching looked much different! Ha! Thanks so much for your sweet comment!

Where did you get your desk caddies? Really Good Stuff?

Hi Mark! I got most of them from Michael’s, but the orange one is from Lakeshore! I’m not sure if Really Good Stuff carries them or not, but that would be another great place to check!

Love your room and organization! How did you create the cursive lettering on the Reading graffiti wall? Do you type the word in PDF and then print and cut out by hand? If so, how large did you make the font letters and what font did you use? Thanks in advance!

Thank you so much, Ashley! I actually have a Silhouette that I used to cut the letters! I’m sure you could do it the other way too, but that would be a lot of work! I can’t remember the size, but the fonts I used were KG The Fighter and KG Part of Me!

Thank you for sharing your classroom. Can you tell us more about your Reading Graffiti wall? What is written, is is chalkboard paper and how do you refer to it or is it more decoration? Thanks

Hi Casey! I have a whole blog post about it here: https://lessonswithlaughter.com///reading-graffiti-wall/ Hope that helps!!

Hi! Loving these ideas so much! Where did you get that teacher tool box thing on type of the white shelves behind your desk?

Hi Katy! It is from Lowe’s! It was a dark blue (or grey… I can’t remember!) when I purchased it, so I just spray painted it white!

Where did you get your US map? I want one!! : )

Hi Ruth! I made it! I posted a step-by-step tutorial with lots of pictures here! https://lessonswithlaughter.com///colorful-united-states-map-tutorial/

Love the room! I just recently went to RCA came back inspired and want a stage in my room. What are the dimensions of your stage? I am moving from kindergarten to 2nd grade this year and changing my decor a little bit to be more spa like and inspirational with fun encouraging quotes.

Oh my goodness, isn’t RCA so inspirational?! It is such an amazing experience! I had a parent make the stage for me and I can’t remember the exact dimensions! I will have to measure the next time I’m in my classroom! It sounds like your new classroom is going to be amazing!

Where do you post your standards and essential questions in your room?

Hi Alice! Our district isn’t big on posting them, but when I do I just write them down on the white board!

Hey! Where is the math “TIME” poster from? I am obsessed with your classroom, great work!!!!

Hi Kelsie! The math posters are from Ladybug’s Teacher Files! She has a whole post about how she uses them in her classroom and they are AMAZING!! Thank you so much!

I LOVE the colorful bright room & ALL you did with it! Where did you get the black & white polka dotted rug? Also the #READ letters with lights? Thanks! Michelle

Hi Michelle! Thank you so much! The black and white rug is from IKEA, but sadly they don’t sell it anymore! They have a black and white striped one though, which is what I’m using for my library this year! The #READ letters are from Target, but they don’t sell those plastic ones anymore! They have metal ones, but no hashtag! Maybe you can find them at another craft store or online? It’s always such a bummer when stores stop selling the really great stuff that we love!

What a beautiful classroom! I love how all the colors combine together. I am going to try and change up my classroom design this year and I might borrow some of your ideas! Where did you get that awesome U.S. map?

Thanks so much, Kalli! I love bright colors and could never just decide on just a couple, so I decided to use them all! Ha! I actually made the map! I have a step-by-step tutorial with lots of pictures here! https://lessonswithlaughter.com///colorful-united-states-map-tutorial/

Love your white bench and the adorable striped, polka dot & pom pom trimmed pillows! Can you share where they came from?

Thanks, Lisa! The white bench and rug are from IKEA, although they don’t sell the polka dot one anymore! They have a new black and white striped one though, which is what I’m using for our library this year! The pom pom pillows are from Hobby Lobby!

Thanks for sharing these pictures. Your classroom is incredible. Makes me motivated to keep working on mine! I am in the process of creating a stage in my classroom too. Could you tell me what the dimensions of your are? Also, I am super curious about the leadership league. Can you tell me about it?

Thanks so much, Maureen! My students LOVE our stage! I’m not sure what the exact dimensions are, so I’ll have to measure for you next time I go in! And I did a whole blog post on our Leadership League! You can read it here: https://lessonswithlaughter.com///from-homework-club-to-leadership-league/ !

Where did you get that map of the united states!?

Hi Kyle! I made it! I have a step-by-step tutorial here! https://lessonswithlaughter.com///colorful-united-states-map-tutorial/

Moving to 5th grade and your classroom makes me SO excited! May I ask what you used for your “reading graffiti” letters? A cricket?

Where did you get your colorful map from??

Hi Wendy! I bought the canvas and painted it! I have a tutorial with lots of pictures that you can see here: https://lessonswithlaughter.com///colorful-united-states-map-tutorial/ Hope that helps!

I love your classroom! I teach 5th grade and my classroom is teal, grey, and black. I’m planning on adopting some of your awesome ideas. When I read the article in the magazine I noticed that you use a number file system for students to hand in their papers. Did you make the number files or did you buy them? Can you please share where you got this? Thank you for your inspiration!

Hi Laycie! Thank you so much! Yes,that file system is amazing! I bought it on Amazon back in 2012 and still use the same one since it has held up so well! Here is my affiliate link! http://amzn.to/2vaVGVH

Love your classroom!! Did you create your clipboard and manipulative labels using your computer? If so are they on your TPT?

Hi Tammy! I got the clipboard label from Ladybug’s Teacher Files! Yes, I created the manipulative labels on my computer, but those ones aren’t on TPT! I have other supply labels on TPT though (including editable ones) under my name: Molly Maloy!

Your classroom is adorable!! Where did you get your team cart with the markers and stuff on it and the white cupboard with the clips boards on the bottom shelf?

Thanks so much, Kallie! The cart is from IKEA, but I don’t think they sell that color anymore! I think Michael’s and Target both have a similar one though! The bookshelf is from IKEA and is the Billy one! Hope that helps!

Do you do all of your series’ in bins? I am redoing my library alphabetically and have all my series’ on the shelves grouped together after the other books. I am just curious to know what you think has worked best for you. My husbands boss just bought me all new book shelves for my room and I want them to look amazing, but functional. Any input would be appreciated!

Hi Melissa! I just had a few series in bins, but this year I am moving more of them over to be in with the other fiction books alphabetically! I’m planning on using the book bins more for my informational books! That’s so excited that you have new shelves for your room this year! I bet they are going to look great!

Love your room!! Where did you get your bright paper for your bulletin boards? Or is it fabric?

Thanks so much, Codee! It is all Fadeless paper from Lakeshore, but they sell it on Amazon this year! I’m using fabric for my boards this year, which has tons of bright color options too! I love both!

Where are you buying your bright fabric?

I got most of it from Joann Fabrics!!

Amazing room! Bet the kiddos love it! Curious about your “turner inner” mentioned in the Schilastic article. Can you share more info, please?

*Scholastic

Where did you get your white shelf that’s behind your u shape table that has your phone on top of it?

And your cute silver buckets on your teal cart!

LOVE!!!! Where did you get your caddies for the student desk! Mine have most definitely seen their better days!

Hi! I absolutely adore this classroom! So many great ideas!

Can you share where you found the calendar behind your teacher desk? I love those colors!

I am so happy that I found your blog through Pinterest! Your classroom library is STUNNING! That will definitely be my favorite part of my classroom one day too I’m sure 🙂

xoxo, Juliana Grace | http://www.julianagraceblogspace.com

Your classroom is such an inspiration on how I would like my classroom to look one day! I love how you focus on incorporating ways of collaboration, creativity, and communication just within your classroom. I am such a fan of working in small groups so the whiteboard desk is such a great tool to have! I also like how organized your classroom library is. There are so many options and I feel like students enjoy reading in your class because of it. I think students also enjoy having the Reading Graffiti wall that pulls meaningful quotes from the book for others to view and read.

Where did you get your white board table and which shape did you go with???? Your classroom is just FUN!!!!!

Is your whole wall cork? I have no bulletin boards and I am so jealous you can have so much on your walls.

Hi! Beautiful classroom- are your bulletin boards that big or did you stick the fabric to the walls?! If you stuck them, what did you find held them up the best? I always have a hard time once I hang things!

Love your classroom-thanks for sharing! I’m wondering where you got the colorful map of the United States??

Thank you so much! I made it! You can find the tutorial with lots of pictures here: https://lessonswithlaughter.com///colorful-united-states-map-tutorial/

Oh.My.GOSH! I love it! I have been looking EVERYWHERE on instagram and pinterest to find upper elementary decorated classrooms… I’m like really?!?!? Are they all glum and bare?! Yours is perfect! I love the students’ pictures on the wall! That’s my favorite.

LOVE this!!! I’m returning to the classroom and I love the Accountable Talk area? Possible to see more photos of it?

Hello. I love your Math time board with space to post groups. Is that available on TPT?

It’s from Ladybugs Teacher Files on TPT!

I’m moving to 5th from 1st next year and I’m nervous! I’ve never taught upper grade before! Looking at your blog I’m completely inspired and excited about what next year will hold for me!

Hi there! I absolutely love your classroom! I am a first year fifth grade teacher this fall and trying to get as many ideas I can for setting up my classroom and yours as given me so much inspiration! I wanted to ask where did you purchase the #READ letters at?

They are from Target but a few years ago!

I love all of your classroom decor. Where did you find the light up hashtag symbol and letters?

They are from Target, but a few years ago! I haven’t seen them there recently!

Where did you get the book bins on your bookshelves?

I love all of these ideas! Can you share some information about the whiteboard table you have for small groups now? I’m looking to ditch the bulky kidney table for something more modern that takes up less space.

My school bought the whiteboard table! I’m not sure where it’s from, but I would highly recommend a whiteboard table! My students love it!

Where did you get the map poster? I’ve been trying to find something that size.

Hi Molly, I love your classroom! I am so happy I found it on Pinterest! I wanted to ask you about your silhouette for your letters on the bulletin board. Where did you find the silhouette? I’ve been trying to find the font and I can’t. 🙁

Do you have the calendar squares for your calendar in your store? I could not find them, but love them!

Thank you!! My calendar is from Kristen @ladybugsteacherfiles! She has it in her store here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Editable-Events-Calendar-Set-for-the-Upper-Grades-3253245

Your classroom is amazing! I was wondering if you could explain the watercolor hand project that is on your wall. I love to include decor created by the students

Hi! This is my DREAM classroom! I love it! Do you happen to know what size your bookshelves are or have a link for them?

Hi Kylea! Thank you so much!!!! My bookshelves are the Billy bookshelves from IKEA! I love them!

Your room is such an inspiration! I’m wondering about the spaces on your walls…do you really have that many bulletin boards? If not, what did you use on the wall to make it look like a board?

Hi there, just found your blog. I’m interested in those silver brad things you used on the writing wall. Where do you get those and what are they called? I can’t figure out how to find them!

The Queens Museum’s School Programs provide Pre-K-12 students with engaging learning experiences that integrate in-depth observation, interpretation of art and historical exhibitions, and hands-on art-making activities. All of our school programs emphasize Common Core and Next Generation Learning standards–particularly in English Language Arts and New York City’s Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts–and can be adapted for any grade level.

Our guided tours and workshops are led by experienced Teaching Artists, connecting our permanent collection and rotating contemporary exhibitions to our workshop curriculum and themes.

Appointments are required for all school groups visiting the Queens Museum and must be scheduled at least three weeks in advance. Availability is limited.

Our two-hour school program includes a guided gallery experience and art-making workshop  incorporating our permanent collections such as t he Panorama of the City of New York ,  Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass , Relief Map of the New York City Water Supply System , and the World’s Fair Collection .

Guided tours and workshops are offered Monday – Friday, between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm. Before scheduling your guided tour and workshop , p lease review our School Group Guidelines  in advance of your visit.

To explore the Museum independently, teachers and students may schedule a Self-Guided Visit .

Our guided school programs can accommodate a maximum of 25 participants , with one chaperone for every 10 students. Larger groups will be divided into smaller groups in order to offer more individual attention to students and maintain safety in the galleries and other museum spaces.

The Museum reserves the right to limit the number of adult chaperones participating in school programs.

  • DOE Public Schools – $300
  • Private Schools – $400
  • Title 1 & District 75 Schools – $200

Guided Tour & Workshop Themes

2 hours, includes a guided gallery tour and art-making workshop

Panorama: City Blocks Recommended Grades: Pre-K through 5th grade Learning Standards: Science and Literacy

Panorama City Blocks is the Museum’s most popular workshop and a tradition for many school groups annually. Students will experience a guided tour of the Panorama of the City of New York, Queens Museum’s 9,335 square foot model of NYC hand rendered as a 3-dimensional architectural model. Under the guidance of Queens Museum teaching artists, students will problem solve while making their own models of urban communities. Focus can be placed on “Sustainability and the Environment”, “Transportation” and “Urban Planning”, while examining the differences between urban, suburban, and rural areas. Students draw on the aesthetic cues from the Panorama as a jumping off point to discuss architecture, sustainable living, and the ecological future of NYC as well as their own experiences as urban inhabitants.

Panorama: Suspension Bridges Recommended Grades: 4th through 5th grade Learning Standards: Math, Science and Literacy

Working in teams, students construct a three-dimensional suspension bridge as they learn about transportation flow and the structural components used in the building of bridges as well as, key architectural terminology. Queens Museum Teaching Artists will lead students on a guided tour experience of the Panorama of the City of New York with attention to stories of bridge construction and the overarching transportation history of New York City.

Tiffany Lamps: Tiffany Windows Recommended Grades: 1st to 3rd Learning Standards: Literacy and Cognitive Development, Science, History

Students discover Louis Comfort Tiffany’s glass through a variety of hands-on experiences. Students participate in storytelling, movement exercises and art-making activities that focus on pre-literacy skills such as shape, color, and pattern recognition, as well as creativity and self-expression. In conjunction with a guided tour and discussion in the Tiffany gallery, students learn about the history of Louis Comfort Tiffany and the science behind glass-making, constructing faux stained-glass window panes using transparent paper and collage materials in the art studio.

Cancellations & Rescheduling

If you need to change or cancel, please contact us as soon as possible.   Cancellation requests must be sent by email to [email protected] two weeks prior to your scheduled visit. Your cancellation is only finalized once acknowledged by an email response. Schools who cancel with less than two weeks notice will incur a cancellation fee of half the total cost of the program.

If you need to reschedule (with at least two week’s notice), we will make every effort to accommodate a new proposed date, but cannot guarantee a spot. Schools who cancel with less than 48 hours notice, or do not attend on their scheduled date, are responsible for the full amount.

DOE Cancellation: The Queens Museum agrees to cancel or reschedule tours with no fee if the NYC Department of Education issues a cancellation of field trips and/or school due to outside circumstances or inclement weather.

We reserve the right to cancel museum visits based on circumstances beyond our control. If we have to cancel a visit, we’ll notify you as soon as possible and assist you in rescheduling. If we are unable to reschedule, we’ll provide a full refund.

Late Arrivals

Groups are responsible for arriving at the Museum at their scheduled time. Please carefully review driving and/or public transportation directions in advance and be aware of traffic/transit issues. Review our Visit page to note our location in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, transportation recommendations, and any updates that may impact your travel.

Unfortunately, we cannot delay or extend the length of your guided tour because of late arrival. Late groups are still responsible for paying the full amount.

If your group is in transit and going to be late, please call our front desk at 718-592-9700, ext 233.

We do our best to be flexible with every school but late cancellations and no-show groups incur significant staffing costs to the Museum. Schools with outstanding invoices and groups that repeatedly cancel with late or no notice may be prevented from booking trips in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a lunchroom or cafe space for our group to eat?

The Queens Museum does not have lunchroom facilities available for school groups. We can store lunches along with bags and coats during your tour, and we encourage you to enjoy lunch in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, just outside the Museum entrance.

My group includes students with disabilities, should I use a separate reservation form?

The Museum welcomes visitors with disabilities and we offer discounted rates for Title 1 & District 75 Schools. Please use our standard School Group Reservation Form and let us know any accommodations we can provide to meet your needs. You can also review our Social Narrative to help prepare for your visit.

My group size is changing, can we change our reservation?

Please let us know any requests to change your reservation as soon as possible by emailing [email protected] . Please include your name, phone number, confirmation number, name of organization, and date and time of your visit.

If you are expecting more than 25 students your group is subject to an additional group visit fee and will need to divide into smaller groups. Due to capacity, only five chaperones are permitted per group and we may not be able to accommodate the additional adults. If this is the case, the additional adults are welcome to explore the Museum and reconnect with the group afterward.

Where should our school bus or van park at the Museum?

Buses and vans may stop on the Grand Central Parkway side of the Museum and drop students directly at the entrance. Aside from drop-off and pick-up, there is no parking directly at the Museum entrance. Free parking with limited spaces is available in lots on either side of the Museum. We recommend buses park in the larger southern lot, to the right of the Museum.

School Programs at the Queens Museum are made possible with support from the Lily Auchincloss Foundation, The Milton and Sally Avery Arts Foundation, the Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation, and the Michael Tuch Foundation.

Russborough House Russborough House & Parklands is a stunning Palladian Mansion.  The house was designed by the German Architect Richard Cassels and built in 1741.  It has the longest façade of any house in Ireland stretching over 700 feet across the Wicklow landscape.  2017 will see the 18th century walled garden opening for pre-booked groups.  Walled gardens played a major part in the running of large period houses by supplying vegetables, fruit and flowers for ‘the Big House’, staff and some neighbours in the locality.

For Primary school tours there will be a tree trail taking in approximately 8 -10 trees on the Demesne.

One of the oldest trees is called a Wellingtonia (Giant Sequoia) planted in 1861 by the then Prince of Wales

And Earl of Dublin.  At that time Joseph Leeson 4th Earl of Milltown (1799 – 1866) lived in Russborough.

He was the Grandson of the 3rd Earl and he inherited the peerage at the age of 8 years of age.

The tree trail will form part of a school tour for Primary children ages 5 to 8 years.  It will also take inThe Fairy trail, Playground & Maze.   For older children aged 9 to 12 years a guided tour of the house will be offered together with the Maze and Playground.

Tara’s Palace and Wicklow Gaol  have joined up for a fun filled school tour that lets children explore the magical Museum of Childhood as well as experiencing prison life in the eighteenth century.

Tara’s 22 room Palace has been meticulously constructed by some of Ireland’s finest craftsmen and has been designed and built to one-twelfth scale, encapsulating the grandeur and elegance of three of Ireland’s 18th Century Mansions; Castletown House, Leinster House and Carton House. Paintings by leading Irish Artists, including Tom Ryan R.H.A. and miniature furnishing masterpieces by Fed Early, Paul Geoghegan, Michael Walton, John Hodgson and others adorn the State Rooms and private apartments. The Museum also contains hundreds of fascinating exhibits, including the amazing 17th century house in a bottle, the smallest doll in the world, and a 300 year old doll’s house. There is a Museum Quiz, which is popular with all visitors and an interactive room for younger visitors. Tara’s Palace runs school tours and children’s birthday parties throughout the year.

The story of Wicklow’s Historic Gaol is interwoven with the history of Wicklow and Ireland itself and is an excellent educational and atmospheric school tour offering a glimpse into Ireland’s past. Children can visit the original gaol dungeon which re-opened in recent years for the first time in over 100 years to experience first-hand the sights and sounds of the harsh life of prisoners in the dungeon. Through an interactive tour led by experienced actor guides, you can hear the story of its prisoners including the participants in the Irish Rebellion of 1798 and those awaiting transportation to a new life in Australia. You can learn more about The Great Famine of the 1840s and The Independence Era (1916 -23) and aspects of daily life including work & chores, medicine, children, and health and hygiene as well as meeting characters like Mary Morris the Matron.

  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

  • BeverleyT 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat trip - TERRIBLE We got on the bus, but couldn’t buy a 1 day ticket. They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019

But to add additional unnecessary delays; the bus stops at each site for 15 minutes at a time or More ! I gave up half way through ( 45 minutes) ; and walked back to the starting point in 10 minutes! • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018

  • Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018

The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018

2024 Zurich Classic odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions by model that's nailed 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the zurich classic of new orleans 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.

rory-mcilroy-pga-golf-getty-images.jpg

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay look to reclaim some team magic when they pair back up for the 2024 Zurich Classic. The PGA Tour's yearly team event tees off Thursday at TPC Louisiana in New Orleans, and 80 two-man teams will be in attendance for tee off on Thursday. Schauffele and Cantlay were the winning duo back in 2022 and they are the 5-1 favorites on the 2024 Zurich Classic odds board. Should you back this pair of California natives with your 2024 Zurich Classic picks? Or should you back Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry at 8-1 odds?

Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala are listed at 11-1 in the lastest 2024 Zurich Classic odds, and Collin Morkiawa and Kurt Kitayama follow at 16-1. Defending Zurich Classic champions Nick Hardy and David Riley are 80-1 longshots to have repeat success. Before making any 2024 Zurich Classic picks, be sure t o see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship, and the RBC Heritage this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the Zurich Classic 2024 field is finalized, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 Zurich Classic predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the Zurich Classic 2024: McIlroy and Lowry, who've combined for 26 wins on the PGA Tour, barely crack the top five. McIlroy is set to play in his fourth consecutive event when he tees off at TPC Louisiana. He's failed to crack the top-10 in seven of his eight starts on the PGA Tour this season, while Lowry has finished T-19 or worse in six of his past eight events.

Both players have struggled mightily on the green this season. McIlroy enters the 2024 Zurich Classic ranked 78th in strokes gained: putting (0.119) and 72nd in putting average (1.758), a big reason why he ranks 98th in scoring average (70.44). Lowry, meanwhile, ranks 99th in strokes gained: putting (-0.012) and 143rd in putts per round (29.38), which doesn't bode well for their chances to finish on top of the leaderboard this week.

Another surprise: Rasmus Højgaard and Nicolai Højgaard, 35-1 longshots, make a strong run at the title. The twin brothers have a much better chance to win it all than their odds imply, so they're a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.

The Danish twosome has been making headlines abroad for years now, becoming the first brothers to ever win events in consecutive weeks on the European Tour back in 2021. They are now making noise on the PGA Tour as Nicolai finished second at the Farmers Insurance Open back in January and finished T16 in his first ever Masters appearance earlier this month. Nicolai also played this event last year, so his experience makes the duo an under-the-radar competitor at the 2024 Zurich Classic.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 Zurich Classic picks

The model is also targeting three other teams with odds of 35-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 Zurich Classic, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the Zurich Classic 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected Zurich Classic leaderboard , all from the model that's nailed 11 golf majors, including the last three Masters.
