Dreadful experience

Dreadful experience. Coach didn’t turn up. 60 disappointed upset school children. Trip to London was cancelled.

Date of experience : July 05, 2023

Everything about the trip, from the driver to the hotel to arriving at the different attractions we had booked was brilliant, really hassle free. Lauren (our booking contact) was an absolute star from start to finish. Nothing was too much trouble for her. Will definitely be using STC for our next trip!

Date of experience : August 31, 2015

Do NOT book with these people!

Awful accomodation. Worse than a youth hostel. Poo stained sheets. Room stank of rank sewerage, couldnt breathe the smell was so bad! Food was slopped onto plates after having to queue up like Oliver Twist. It was also cold and inedible. Some people got food poisoning. Some nights it took nearly 3 hours for food to arrive. Stuck with all school kids in accomodation on a school trip. No lift so carrying heavy cases up and down stairs. When 5 families complained they couldnt care less and refused to refund.

First Class Service

I have run trips to Paris for many years with Kelly and the team at the School Travel Company. Every aspect of their service is totally professional. They are friendly, efficient and always keen and able to help. Their prices are extremely competitive and they are able to tailor the trips to suit our needs. I would not consider using anyone else and cannot rate them highly enough.

Reply from The School Travel Company

Dear Eleanor Thank you very much for your first class review. Our aim is to provide our groups with memorable experiences and we are delighted to learn that we were able to leave such a positive impression. We are always particularly delighted when it is mentioned how good the service is, as we know how much effort the teams put into organising every trip. It is comments like this that enable us to motivate our team to achieve greater heights. It will be our pleasure to work with you again on next year's trip. Kind regards, Kelly Glover

Excellent every year!

We have used school travel company for the past four years for our school French trip. Always well organised, excellent communication, hardly any problems and those we have had have been dealt with superbly. Kelly is a credit to the company. I will be recommending them to the German department.

Date of experience : July 22, 2015

Dear Simon, We would like to thank you for your 5 star review! Our aim is to provide an exceptional service and we are glad you continue to use our services every year and that we help make your experience a memorable one. Looking forward to working with you on next year's trip! Kind regards, Kelly Glover

Fantastic trip!

The school Travel Company have once more put together a fantastic itinerary for my students, who spent five days in Normandy. From planning to delivery, they have delivered some excellent outcomes, they are easy to communicate to and very organised. I was very reassured that they managed to pre-empty some of the worries that I had regarding the volatile situation in Calais last July and they booked us in on a ferry from Dunkirk, which meant no hassle for us! Thank you!

Dear Germina, Thank you very much for your review. We are very pleased to read that the service we provide is always excellent and that we enable you to have such a memorable experience! We are extremely glad and grateful that you continue to use our services every year and provide you with an educational 'Learning Outside the Classroom' experience. Looking forward to working with you on next year's trip to Paris! Kind regards, Kelly

Highly recommended company

As Educational Visits Coordinator for my school, I have used the School Travel Company for two years to organise 4-day residential trips to London for over 250 students. The logistics of this, as you can imagine, are immense. The STC have been a fantastic company to work with and I highly recommend them to anyone. Kelly and her team are both very organised and extremely pleasant. They are easily contactable and thoroughly efficient from start to finish.

Dear Mr Washington, Thank you for such a lovely review and taking the time to review your experience. We are absolutely delighted that you rate us so highly and it seems that most aspects of your trip were very positive which is excellent to hear. We are truly grateful for your nice comments on our service. It is always lovely to hear that our team have looked after you so well. Looking forward to working with you to arrange next year's trip. Kind regards, Kelly Glover

Review of service

i have worked with Kelly and other members of the School Travel Company for over 6 years on a variety of residential trips to France and I can not fault the service I have received. I have run trips for over 13 years and used numerous companies before transfering all my departments' residential trips to The School Travel Company. Kelly is always professional, friendly, able to suit any trip to my school's needs and available whenever I've needed (or if not, someone else is more than happy to help). I would recommend them highly for a very competitive price, friendly service and variety of packages available.

It is always pleasure to deal with The School Travel Company. The staff is very lovely and quick to reply. No job is too difficult for them. I hope to carry on to using their friendly and competitive service.

Dear Sylwia, Thank for taking the time to write such a lovely review and that your experience with us is always a positive one. One which we will continue to provide on all your future trips. Kind regards, Kelly Glover

Roanoke city middle schools offering saturday school.

Keshia Lynn , Multimedia Journalist

ROANOKE, Va. – Going to school six days a week can be rough, but that’s exactly what Roanoke City Public Schools is offering some of its students.

Roanoke City middle schools are now open on Saturdays.

Right now, three schools offer this program: John P. Fishwick, Lucy Addison, and Woodrow Wilson. The first school offered this program last month. However, all five middle schools will offer Saturday school by May.

“We found students that were eager and staff to work in on Saturdays, which is very unique that students are willing to come in, but based on our numbers, we’re seeing that we do have students who are willing to come in to receive that additional support. A lot of the principals that I spoke with that have Saturday schools they’ve been really energized to see the students working one-on-one with their teachers,” said Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education Lori Wimbush.

Each week, principals put out a robo call asking if kids want to attend. Teachers then design the tutoring for those students. Wimbush said it’s individualized, and it’s based on grade level. Division leaders said teachers are also trying to help kids with their upcoming Virginia SOL testing.

“Our middle schools have provided us with programs that they’re going to be implementing in the next few Saturdays to prepare for the upcoming testing season,” said Wimbush.

Division leaders said each week they’ve been introducing a new middle school. They said on average, about 35 students attend. Middle school parents can reach out to their kids’ schools to sign them up. There’s more support for students too. Summer and after-school programs are available as well.

Roanoke City high schools also offer Saturday School, which started in October. The attendance is fluid based on students’ needs.

“What we’re doing right now currently is providing all of our students the opportunity to receive additional academic support on Saturdays and what we found is a lot of our students, especially in our secondary schools, are taking advantage of coming into school on Saturdays and working with our staff to obtain additional academic support,” said Wimbush.

More than 300 new SROs placed with new Tennessee school safety funding

school travel s.r.o

More than 300 new school resource officers have been placed in schools across Tennessee since lawmakers approved funding to make SROs available for every public school following the deadly shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville.

Lawmakers approved $230 million in new funding for school safety measures in the weeks following the Covenant shooting in March, including money to support an SRO in every public school in the state, funds for Homeland Security agents to be placed in each county to coordinate school security measures, and grant funding for public and non-public schools to install new security equipment.

Gov. Bill Lee first proposed new funding aimed at school security before the Covenant attack, but the legislature increased funding amounts following the tragedy, and passed the school safety package almost unanimously ― with four Democrats casting the only opposing votes .

Of the $230 million, $140 million is allocated for school resource officers, $54 million for school security upgrades, and $30 million for Homeland Security agents to coordinate school safety responses and $8 million for school-based behavioral health staff.

Accompanying the funding, lawmakers established new requirements for schools to lock exterior doors when students are present, and conduct annual incident command and bus safety drills, in addition to already-required intruder drills.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

300 new SROs placed since July

Districts can use the $140 million in SRO funding to support SROs that have already been placed in schools, or to hire new SROs for schools that do not already have them.

Since funds became available in July, more than 300 new additional SROs were hired and placed in schools this year and more are in training, Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Jeff Long told lawmakers this week. Schools have also used funds to offset costs already supporting existing SROs.

So far, the department has disbursed $101.6 million of the $140 million grant funds to 1,355 out of the 1,815 schools in the state.

The department has contacted every law enforcement agency that has not yet applied for SRO grant funding to help streamline the process.

"I personally called three agencies who had not completed the process and asked them to get it done, and we got those three agencies completed within a week," Long said.

A hurdle to placing more officers is staffing shortages.

"One of the things that naturally takes a little time on this is getting the SROs trained by the local agencies," Long said.

In the meantime, the agency has directed Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers to help patrol around schools. Troopers have conducted more than 58,400 school safety checks this year, Long said.

Long said that the department worked quickly to develop new software to streamline applications and MOUs from local law enforcement agencies. The agency began distributing the grant funding during the first week of July.

SRO placement rates low in urban centers

Statewide, middle and high schools are more likely to already have an SRO placed than elementary schools.

According to data from the department, 64% of public elementary schools have agreements with local law enforcement seeking to hire SROs, and 89% of those have placed a full-time SRO. Secondary schools have higher placement rates: 71% of middle and high schools have agreements with law enforcement and 94% of those have been provided an SRO. Many secondary schools already had SRO programs prior to the new funding.

Tennessee’s urban centers have some of the lowest SRO placement rates, through the end of September.

Davidson County has historically not placed SROs in elementary schools , due objections from school district leadership and staffing challenges. At first, when state grant funds came available, the district did not intend to apply for funds to staff SROs in elementary schools ― a move the governor decried as "a disservice to parents and teachers." Instead, the district initially sought $3.375 million in state grants to support existing positions at middle and high schools in the district.

Later, despite years of pushback against officers in elementary schools, then-Mayor John Cooper announced a long-term goal to put at least one full-time officer on every MNPS campus. Police Chief John Drake announced in August that MNPD is recruiting 70 additional SROs to be trained and placed in MNPS elementary schools by the end of the 2023-2 4 school year. It will take some time before the schools are fully staffed. As of September, no MNPS elementary schools had an SRO, according to the Department of Safety, while all MNPS middle and high schools did.

Tennessee's other major cities are also still working to recruit officers. In Shelby County, 28 of the 260 schools are covered by the district’s MOU with law enforcement, according to the Department of Safety, and 25 of those have an officer placed. Only 42 of Hamilton County’s 81 schools are covered by the county’s MOU, and of those, 32 have an SRO. Contracts are pending with the Knoxville Police Department and Knox County Sheriff's Office, Long said.

"The thing that we have found out from some of the larger departments is simply manpower, getting the manpower hired, getting them trained, getting them into the process," Long said. "We've give them the full year of the mount of the grant to get that done, so they have a full fiscal year."

School hardening measures funded

The department is also working to administer the $50 million in school security grant funding – which lawmakers approved to allow schools to take security measures like installing bulletproof film on windows, and improving security cameras and other tools.

"Each school is required to do a safety assessment and they can only utilize their funding for their high priority items," said Shannon Gordon, chief operating officer for the state Department of Education.

So far, 233 school districts and charter schools are using grant funds, according to Tennessee Education Commissioner Lizzette Reynolds. The top uses for the grant funding are surveillance and communications equipment, access control technology, and window film.

“We have not denied any applications,” Reynolds told Gov. Lee during the agency's budget hearing this week.

The Department of Safety has placed 56 Homeland Security agents in each county to help coordinate and educate school safety teams. The agency's goal is to have all 122 such agents complete training by February.

School of Business graduate program surges in top rankings

A U.S. News & World Report methodology change rewards schools for job placement, graduate earnings

school travel s.r.o

The UC Riverside School of Business increased 20 positions in a U.S. News & World Report 2024 graduate school ranking released this week. UCR’s business school was the benefactor of a methodology change this year that places greater emphasis on post-graduation earnings and how quickly graduates found jobs.

The School of Business’ Master of Business Administration program ranked No. 90 on the business school list, released Tuesday, April 9. Though 506 accredited institutions were canvassed, only 124 U.S. graduate-level business programs provided sufficient information on post-graduation earnings and job placements to merit inclusion on the U.S. News list.

“The school’s ascent in the rankings is a testament to its strategic initiatives, such as the expansion of its facilities and the enhancement of its academic offerings, which align with the evolving demands of the global business landscape,” said Rami Zwick, associate dean of graduate programs for the School of Business.

The rankings released this week are based in part on reputational surveys sent to more than 15,000 academics and industry professionals, including corporate recruiters. In the surveys, deans, program directors, and senior faculty are asked to judge the academic quality of a program.

In addition to the surveys, scoring factors selectivity — gauged by graduate exam test scores; undergraduate GPA, and acceptance rate. About half of the score is based on a change this year that places greater emphasis on earnings — assessing post-graduate salaries by profession — and successful job placement. The revised job placement metric rewards business schools when their graduates get jobs quickly — either when they graduate or within three months of graduation.

Separately, the business school’s part-time MBA program was ranked No. 73, an increase of three positions from the past year. That ranking was among 269 universities.

In fall 2024, the School of Business will mark the 55th anniversary of its founding and the 30th anniversary of the A. Gary Anderson School of Management with the opening of a new 63,400-square-foot academic building .

UCR’s School of Education was ranked No. 86 out of 237 positions in the graduate school rankings, which considered only doctoral-level education programs. Last year, the school ranked No. 80.

The education rank is based on research expenditures; assessments by education-school and graduate-school deans and by professionals including recruiters and school superintendents; total degrees awarded; student-faculty ratio; faculty awards; and selectivity, measured by acceptance rates.

U.S. News this week postponed publication of its rankings for medical and graduate engineering programs after some universities questioned the rankings methodology for those programs.

U.S. News & World Report, the standard-bearer among college rankings, publishes its anticipated undergraduate rankings every fall. In the most recent rankings, released in fall 2023, UCR climbed 13 positions to No. 76 overall among U.S. private and public universities. UCR was ranked No. 2 nationally in social mobility, which considers the degree to which a university elevates its graduates to a higher standard of living.
