15 Things To Do on a Rice University Campus Visit
By Anvita W.
January 12, 2023
Considering applying to Rice University in the near future? Maybe it’s time to schedule a campus visit.
I’m currently a freshman at Rice, and just a short time ago, I was building my college list. Rice University quickly rose to the top. I was amazed by the residential college system and array of academic programs. I couldn’t see myself anywhere else, especially after my campus visit.
Here are the places on campus that I recommend you visit to get a feel for what student life is like at Rice.
Navigate Through This Article:
Scheduling your campus visit.
First, make sure to book an appointment ahead of time to sign up for a guided tour of the campus.
While self-guided tours are always an option, tours led by Rice students provide fun bits of information, including Rice insider lingo and hot spots on campus. The student guides are also the best source to answer any questions about the university.
15 Places To Check Out on a Rice University Campus Visit
1. lovett hall.
Lovett Hall, the main entrance of the university, represents the beginning and end of a student’s years at Rice. New students matriculate through Lovett Hall the first night of their orientation, called “O-week.” Don’t go in or out through the Sallyport until the day of graduation—it’s rumored that your graduation will be delayed you use this entrance before the last day as a student.
2. Rice Memorial Center, “RMC”
Located in the center of campus, the RMC is home to the Rice Student Center. It’s always bustling with students studying outside in the shade, fundraising for clubs, making late-night coffee runs, and buying merch at the campus store. The RMC is a must-see spot for those wishing to experience a bit of student culture at Rice.
3. Baker College Commons
Rice University has a residential college system where students are randomly placed into one of the eleven colleges. Placement takes place the summer before matriculation. For fellow Harry Potter nerds, Baker College, the first of the residential colleges, is dubbed the college that looks the most like the iconic Hogwarts Great Hall.
As a proud resident of Baker College myself, the wooden interior and traditional banners hanging from the tall walls of the Commons provide the perfect space to study, play a round of ping pong, or dine with my fellow Bakerites.
4. Turrell Skyspace
Built by the famous American architect, James Turrell, the Skyspace sits behind the RMC and in front of Brockman Hall for Opera, which is also a great place to check out. Visit Skyspace during sunrise or sunset to see the special light show.
5. Fondren Library
Rice’s main library, dubbed “Fondy” by students, is one of the main hubs for studying on campus. Open until the late hours of the night, students can always find a quiet space to study or librarians for help. As you go up each of the six floors, the volume of the floor decreases: the sixth is nearly pin-drop silent for students who prefer that environment to study.
6. Rice Coffeehouse, “Chaus”
Chaus is the student-run coffee shop on campus. This staple caters to students until midnight every day. Offering affordable and delicious drinks, Chaus is a great spot for students to study with friends or grab a snack on the way to class.
7. The Hoot
Only open after 8pm, the Hoot is a student-run organization in the RMC that sells food for late night studying and snacking. Selling Raising Cane’s, fresh Banh-mis, and a selection of snacks, the Hoot is always teeming with students enjoying a late dinner or study break.
8. Brockstein Pavilion
Between Fondren and the RMC, Brockstein Pavilion is the second of four coffee shops on campus. One of the many study spots on campus, Brockstein’s chic and modern look is a fun spot to enjoy a drink or grab lunch on your visit to Rice.
9. McNair Hall
McNair Hall is one of the newer buildings on campus and home to Rice’s renowned Jones School of Business. To the right of a beautiful fountain in front of Skyspace, McNair is one of the most recognizable buildings on campus. It’s a lively place—busy with graduate students, fun study spots, and the campus’ third coffeehouse, Audrey’s. With many outdoor spaces surrounding the building, McNair Hall is a guaranteed student favorite.
Just Off Campus
10. rice village.
Just a short walk or campus shuttle from campus, Rice Village is the closest shopping and restaurant district for students and one of my favorite spots to visit on the weekends. Student favorites include Insomnia Cookies, Tiger Noodle House, and Dave’s Hot Chicken.
11. Houston Medical Center
Houston’s Medical Center is the largest in the world and definitely worth checking out. It’s also a short walk from campus. The hospital provides numerous opportunities for internships and research, restaurants, and convenient places to stay off campus.
12. Herman Park
Located in the museum district just across from campus, Herman Park is a great place to relax and take a walk or jog. The park has several places to visit like the Japanese Garden and Houston Zoo, and it also has recreational activities like pedal boats and golf courses.
13. NASA Space Center
Have you ever heard someone say, “Houston, we have a problem”? This popular phrase was coined during the Apollo 13 mission, which was based out of Houston along with all its sister missions. Today, Houston is home to the NASA Space Center, a Smithsonian Affiliate museum that houses many iconic artifacts from the Space Age. If you are a stargazer like me, I highly recommend that you book tickets and visit this internationally famous space center while in Houston. Experience interactive exhibits and theatres to learn about NASA’s programs.
14. Bodegas Taco Shop
A popular joint for students, especially over the weekends, Bodegas is a must-visit restaurant for authentic Tex-Mex food and drinks. This locally-owned restaurant is located in the heart of Houston’s Museum District, so it’s a great place to grab lunch while you’re out sight-seeing.
15. Museum of Fine Arts, “MFA”
The Museum of Fine Arts Houston is one of the largest art museums in the country and a great place to see historic art and interactive exhibits or to capture Instagram-worthy pictures.

“When I first started KD, I had zero SAT® experience. The summer lessons helped me build my foundation and I really started to see a boost in my scores after taking numerous workshops throughout the school year to build on that foundation. Without KD, I don't think I would have the motivation to consistently study for the SAT (test). In the beginning, every time I saw a KD email, I'd remember to sign up for a workshop and practice test for the weekend. Then, it became a habit to go to KD on Saturday mornings. Going to these workshops and taking practice tests consistently helped me get exposed to every question on the SAT (test) for math. Therefore, I was hardly ever surprised to... Read more...

“Honestly, was really, really solid. Doing the program the summer before junior year — and I only did the one — actually got me a lot of experience and review of technical skills needed for the SAT® test. I only had to do it once because I got to relearn those pesky algebra skills that I forgot through the program.”

“Our son, Joseph, is our fifth child to go through the KD College Prep program and our fourth National Merit Finalist. He had another test prep program available to him through his private high school but chose KD because he felt like it made the biggest difference in his scores in the least amount of time. He found the program easy to follow and adapt to his strengths and weaknesses. As parents, we cannot say enough good things about the KD program and would recommend it to anyone looking to improve their scores and earn scholarship dollars!”

“It’s hard to believe we are finally done at KD Prep with our three children. We are incredibly grateful to you for all of your support over the years, which undoubtedly helped each of our children realize their college dreams. All three were accepted to colleges with single digit admission rates. Our eldest was selected as a National Merit® Finalist and was able to apply to colleges with a perfect SAT® score. Our other two were both named National African American Recognition Scholars and National Merit Commended Scholar. One of them applied to college in 2020 with an SAT score of 1520 (780 math and 740 verbal) and the youngest scored 1500 on the October 2021 SAT test (720 verbal and 780 math). Our... Read more...

“Obviously SAT® test prep was NOT fun. The experience was difficult and exhausting, but learning through KD definitely made the experience much less stressful and definitely easier. It's a great system with tons of resources all aimed to give you what you need and more to reach whatever score range you set as your goal (I was able to get a 1540). My favorite part though, specifically with the Coppell campus, was the people! Everyone was so incredibly nice and always in impossibly good moods. It was a great environment to learn and improve in!”

“I want to thank KD College Prep for helping me get the score I needed to receive over $464,000 in scholarships, including two full rides. I started the program the summer going into my junior year. I had an excellent GPA but struggled on standardized tests. Taking the test prep classes throughout junior year and taking practice tests got me more prepared each time I took the test. I achieved my best score the summer going into my senior year. That score allowed me to apply to my top schools as soon as early decision opened. I am so grateful to Karen Dillard and the extra practice and proctored exams! My parents are grateful too—for the small investment they got a great return.”

“KD had a very streamlined process of learning the ins and outs of the reading and grammar part of the SAT® test as well as a very well-structured mathematics process that went through the subjects of algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus in depth. Another great part of the KD experience was the wonderful staff giving me so many useful tips and strategies for the areas that I was specifically struggling with. The staff understands students have different strengths and weaknesses, and the fact that they tailor the info they give to each student is very useful. After months of using KD's methods my scores definitely improved but hovered around 1350—still not near the score I needed but closer. "My initial goals when I first started working with the KD Counseling crew was to compile a list of colleges that I would be somewhat interested in attending and fit my career goals. I think that this step I was by far the most concerned about. I didn’t know how exactly I should go about choosing which places to apply to and if I were to be accepted, if they would fit me. The team did a wonderful job considering my likes and dislikes and helped me compile a list of colleges that suited my tastes and would further my academic career. Thomas D. – Class of 2019
"In just one year, I was able to raise my score by 300 points and get into my dream school."
Piper F. – Class of 2020
"Having our recent GHS graduate attend KD was life changing. It provided our son with choices and opportunities that he might not have had otherwise."

“I came to KD College Prep after already using another tutoring service which we were not seeing results with. Due to time constraints, the traditional classes were not going to be feasible for my daughter. They took the time to figure out a personal plan that would work for her and were always available for our questions and helping her reach her goals. Every employee from the managers to the students working at their locations are top notch.”

Here are 3 ways Fond du Lac is celebrating Earth Day and Arbor Day this week
Events are planned at lakeside park pavilion, on main street and at founders hall of the congregation of sisters of st. agnes..
FOND DU LAC — Earth Day is April 22, and with Arbor Day on its heels April 26, Fond du Lac will celebrate both all week long.
From the Gottfried Prairie & Arboretum to the Niagara Escarpment , the natural world of Fond du Lac is often marveled, and area businesses and organizations take the spring season as an opportunity to highlight and educate about what the area has to offer.
This year, city officials, Arbor Acres and the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes have each planned ways to honor Earth Day and Arbor Day. Here's how Fond du Lac will celebrate the nature-focused holidays.
City celebrates Arbor Day April 26 with Roberts class planting annual tree
The City of Fond du Lac will honor Arbor Day at 1 p.m. April 26 at the Lakeside Park Pavilion, in a joint celebration with the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Fond du Lac Campus.
A Roberts Elementary School third-grade class will plant the Arbor Day tree on the park's west lakefront, courtesy of Festival Foods, which will also donate tree seedlings for the students.
Fond du Lac will also receive its 36th Tree City Award after meeting Tree City USA’s four requirements: maintaining a tree board or department, having a tree care ordinance, dedicating an annual community forestry budget of a least $2 per capita, and hosting an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
UW Oshkosh's campus in Fond du Lac will receive the award for its fifth year of Tree Campus Higher Education status, contributing to UW Oshkosh being the only UW System school with all three of its campuses holding that status.
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Urban Forestry Coordinator Olivia Witthun will present the awards on behalf of the National Arbor Day Foundation .
Fond du Lac nonprofit marks 20 years: Whisper Hill Clydesdales to celebrate 20th anniversary with fundraiser at The Hive April 27
Arbor-Earth Day Festival with Arbor Acres and more returns for second year
Arbor Acres will host the Arbor-Earth Day Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 27 on the north block of Main Street, between Merrill Avenue and Division Street.
The event includes a craft fair, yard games, brat fry, food trucks, drinks and live music, as well as a tree raffle benefiting Salute the Troops. The first-place prize is a Royal Raindrops Crab Apple from Midpark Nurseries Inc , including free planting from Arbor Acres.
Bay Lakes Council will host a sneaker drive at the festival, accepting new, gently used and good-condition sneakers that will be used for recycling and repurposing for those in need. Every pair donated will grant participants an entry for a chance to win a $250 Tree Work gift card from Arbor Acres.
For more information and updates, visit the Arbor Acres Facebook page .
CSA Earth Day Fair includes Earth-focused exhibitors and tours
The Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes will host the Earth Day Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27 at Founders Hall at the motherhouse, 320 County Road K.
The fair will include several exhibitors showcasing how to "care for our common home," featuring Advocap, Fond du Lac County Audubon Society, Fond du Lac Bird City, Fond du Lac Public Library, Fond du Lac Wastewater Treatment & Resource Recovery Facility, Friends of Gottfried Prairie & Arboretum, Glacial Lakes Conservancy, Niagara Escarpment Resource Network and more.
New this year is a series of 45-minute presentations throughout the day, beginning at quarter past each hour and covering topics such as water treatment technologies, the Winnebago Wild Rice Revitalization Project, using eBird, the value of native plants and the Niagara Escarpment.
Tours of the property will be available, with guided tours including solar array tours, a bird walk and a two-hour in-depth tour of the land including the escarpment. Space will be limited for each, so online pre-registration is encouraged, but not required.
Marian names next president: Marian University appoints former educator and Marian alum as 18th president
Self-guided tours are welcome, but visitors exploring the property will need to sign in at the registration desk in Founder's Hall and wear a visitor's badge while on the grounds. CSA will ask visitors to stay on pathways and remember to take only pictures and leave only footprints.
The Big Blue Yummy food truck will be on site 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and a raffle will feature prizes of sustainable household products and gifts, including birdhouses, a fairy house, a native plant starter pack and an Atkinson Farm Basket.

Vibe Check: USC's Best Study Spots
A roundup of our favorite study spots across campus..
The stress of finals is building and those semester-ending exams the only thing standing between you and a much-deserved summer vacation. Your planner looks like a bowl of Lucky Charms, a rainbow consisting of every study plan and final meticulously laid out and scheduled in preparation. You can practically taste the success. But where’s the best place for you to focus and go through a thousand Quizlet flashcard decks? Where can you spread out your textbooks and fav pens? Is it quiet? Does it have comfy chairs?
Every person is a little bit different when it comes to their study environment. Some like to study in big groups, huddled around white boards while verbally processing the material. Some like warm, cozy and dim spaces that are filled with the quiet ambient noises of pages turning, pens scratching feverishly against paper and coffee cups clinking. Others enjoy a silent, clean and bright environment with minimal distractions to enter a level of hyperfocus that can’t be broken. Then there are students who find that the best study spots aren’t in a building at all.
Gibbes Green
Tucked away in the trees, Gibbes Green provides a small, island-like oasis for those looking to be outdoors on campus, but not have to be directly in the South Carolina sun. In this space, you’ll feel like the main character of your favorite romcom as you devour your notes, the intertwining oak branches casting shadows across your notebooks and study blanket. Gibbes Green is also centrally located, making it a great spot for those who enjoy the chatter of passersby as ambient noise. We suggest bringing an acai bowl from Colloquium for extra brain power and the perfect study picnic.
Patio at Barnwell College
The patio at Barnwell is a gem hiding in plain sight. This shady outdoor study spot is perfect for those who want the vibes of Gibbes Green but prefer a table to layout their study materials. Plus, the tables at this location have enough room for the whole gang.
Academic Advising Center
Located on the third floor of Close-Hipp, the Academic Advising Center is the perfect study spot for those looking for a bright and modern space to absorb notes and information. Natural light and plenty of outlets make this spot a great choice if you’re wanting to hunker down for the long haul with few distractions. This location is convenient for Columbia Hall and Capstone residents, and it even has a microwave for your favorite study snacks.
Third Floor Russell House
Russell House is no surprise to this list, but the third floor is uncharted territory for many. As you weave through the chairs, booths and around corners, you’ll discover several nooks and crannies to tuck yourself away. This space has cozy chairs and couches that are more removed from the hustle and bustle of Russell, while still giving you proximity to your favorite dining options.
Thomas Cooper Library
It's an icon. It is the moment. T-Coop is the obvious go-to study spot for most and can get packed quickly during exams. Regardless, this location is the best for group studying or a quiet place for hyperfocus. Want to lock yourself away in a guaranteed room where time becomes a blur? You can book your study space ahead of time. If you're an avid ASMR listener, T-Coop is the study spot for you. The turning of book pages, the soft hum of AirPods playing music, highlighters gliding across notebooks, the gentle tap of keyboards typing, it's all there. If the library isn't your vibe but the sounds are , we’ve got the perfect ASMR video for you.
The Horseshoe
Picture this: A soft breeze rustling the oaks and palmettos. The soft murmur of chatter and wireless speakers coming from a dozen or so clusters of study groups dotting the grass on brightly colored blankets. It’s warm, tranquil and there’s probably a dog to pet when the going gets tough. This is the Horseshoe study experience, quintessentially South Carolina and sure to inspire finals success. We suggest grabbing your favorite Beezer's sandwich to push you through that last PowerPoint.
South Caroliniana Library
After years of painstaking renovations, the South Caroliniana Library reopened this past fall. Inside, you’ll feel at one with history as you tap a nervous toe on the original floors and study at the same desks that the university’s Board of Trustees used back in 1844. The library is airy, quiet, studious and will make you feel like you’re studying in the Library of Congress rather than on a college campus. Even though you’re not allowed to have food or drinks in the library, its proximity to a Cool Beans latte or a Carolina Café bagel makes it an elite spot for focus and vibes.
Moore School Dominion Energy Study Commons & Patio
Just down the hill from central campus lies the Darla Moore School of Business patio and Dominion Energy study commons. If you’re a student who likes to switch up scenery without having to go somewhere entirely new, this location is perfect for you. Inside is filled with different kinds of seating, depending on your preference, and floor-to-ceiling windows for natural light and Columbia views that will keep you alert through every flashcard. Outside on the patio, the sounds of the city will become the soundtrack to your study session as you stretch out across one the large patio tables.
