The Pocono Mountains, frequently referred to as the Poconos, are one of Pennsylvania’s most visited areas. Stunning valleys, dense forests, rugged mountain scenery, and rolling countryside make the Poconos an ideal setting for some of the best resorts, inns, and hotels in the Keystone state.

If you’re looking for a rustic lodge or a luxurious property, you will find the best place to stay with our list of favorite resorts for the 50+ traveler in the Poconos. When selecting these properties, we looked at facilities, amenities, on-site activities, and location.

1. The Lodge At Woodloch Resort, Hawley

An escape to The Lodge at Woodloch will encourage you to rediscover your passions, explore new hobbies, and leave the 50+ traveler feeling re-energized.

This resort, a tranquil forest retreat only 95 miles from New York City , includes a world-class spa, fine and casual dining, as well as swimming pools, and lounge areas. The emphasis is not just on indulgence, though. Health and wellness activities hosted by the resort, including personal development seminars, culinary classes, guest speakers, and adventure programs, are available.

Set on a pristine lake, this private, adult-only resort features 58 luxuriously furnished rooms and suites. The rooms are all tastefully furnished and very bright due to the large floor-to-ceiling windows. They have furnished, private verandas with lake or garden views, mini-fridges, and spacious marble bathrooms with separate rain showers.

The spa offers entirely personalized treatments for individuals and couples. For relaxing before or after appointments, enjoy the outdoor terraces and indoor fireplaces, plus steam rooms, saunas, and whirlpools. This lodge is truly a delight for the mature traveler wanting to relax and rejuvenate.

2. Skytop Lodge, Skytop

Skytop Lodge is a top luxury resort in the Pocono Mountains. The ideal spot for those looking for a luxurious getaway or extended break. Established in 1928, the resort is set in a stunning 5,500 acres of unspoiled natural beauty and meticulously manicured lawns and fairways. The golf course itself is a big attraction and boasts a beautiful clubhouse with a massive stone fireplace, a pro shop, and a restaurant.

Skytop’s lodging options include the lodge, an inn, and cottages. My favorite is the elegant inn with 19 spacious guest rooms, each with its own refrigerator, fireplace, and a furnished balcony. They have two executive suites, famous for their wide built-in whirlpool tubs. If a multigenerational trip is what you had in mind, check out their cottages, which boast four separate guest rooms with their own porch.

There is much to see and do for the active 50+ traveler. Hike their winding trails, walk to waterfalls, go horseback riding, golfing, kayaking, tennis, swimming, or fishing. In winter, they even have ice skating.

3. Mount Airy Casino Resort, Mt. Pocono

If you’re into nightlife and gambling, the Mount Airy Casino Resort is the spot for you. There’s a golf course and a spa for when you take a break from winning all that cash. They often have big name entertainment playing at the resort. They host concerts, adult pool parties, and stand-up comedians. The casino, with blackjack, slots, and poker tournaments, is the big draw here.

Nine restaurants provide plenty of dining options. They also have a beautiful 51,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor pool space. There is a poolside bar and fluffy daybeds to enjoy some quiet relaxation. A full-service spa and a fitness center make your stay complete.

Each room has a pillow-top bed, free high-speed Internet, luxury seating, a Keurig, and a mini-bar.

4. Pocono Mountain Villas By Exploria Resorts, East Stroudsburg

Pocono Mountain Villas is located next to the Delaware River in the Pocono Mountains, offers plenty of things to do all year round. They have a golf course, hiking, horseback riding, mini-golf, and tubing.

Accommodations include studio options or villas with one or two bedrooms. All have free Wi-Fi, fireplaces, and kitchens.

5. Woodlands Inn, Wilkes-Barre

In Wilkes-Barre, Woodlands Inn , an Ascend Collection Hotel, is a lovely boutique-style property popular with couples with 150 rooms and suites. Guests enjoy the use of two swimming pools (one indoor, one outdoor), a hot tub, and a well-equipped fitness center. Your stay includes a buffet breakfast, along with a complimentary airport shuttle service.

The resort’s rooms have a king-size bed or two double beds. Standard features in all rooms include luxurious linens, chairs, HDTVs, and coffee makers. King rooms have a convenient kitchenette with a fridge and a microwave. Some units are wheelchair accessible, and some rooms are pet-friendly.

6. The French Manor Inn And Spa, Newfoundland

An ideal option for those looking for a peaceful, romantic getaway to Poconos, The French Manor Inn and Spa in Newfoundland offers bed and breakfast-style accommodation in a majestic building reminiscent of the traditional French Chateau. The exquisite rooms are each decorated and furnished differently. A variety of larger suites are available, some include whirlpool tubs for two. All rooms have gas fireplaces, mini-fridges, coffee makers, private balconies, and jacuzzi baths.

Given the size of the inn, the services are impressive. A highlight is the fine dining restaurant, which focuses on world-class French cuisine, and if a fast or casual bite is required, the on-site cafe offers a range of tasty choices. Other features of note include a spa, indoor heated saltwater swimming pool, hot tub, steam sauna, fitness center, and yoga classes. There’s also an impressive array of photos and artwork to enjoy, along with a small library. The Inn also provides direct access to some of the best hiking and snowshoeing trails in the region.

7. Stroudsmoor Country Inn, Stroudsburg

The Stroudsmoor Country Inn is another boutique hotel in the heart of the Poconos worth a stay. Located in the city of Stroudsburg, the building is more than 100 years old. Highlights include beautiful antique furnishings, many of which can be enjoyed in public places, including the lobby and a fine dining restaurant. Amenities include a full-service spa with several treatment rooms, hot tubs, an indoor swimming pool, and a fitness center.

Located in the main inn, the luxurious Ledgemere Suites are a perfect place for the 50+ traveler to stay. Spacious units, varying in size from 750 to 1,000 square feet, feature king-size beds, luxurious marble baths with jet tubs, separate living areas with fireplaces, balconies, lofts, and wet bars. There are also large two- and three-bedroom suites available and various stand-alone cabins with large living rooms, fireplaces, and furnished porches.

The Golf Resort in the Poconos.

8. The Shawnee Inn And Golf Resort, Shawnee

The historic Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is a perfect choice for couples searching for a quiet lakeside location in Poconos. Opened in 1911, the inn has 80 attractive rooms and suites. Popular options include luxury King Jacuzzi suites with real hardwood flooring as well as classy decor and furnishings. They have self-catering cottages, some of which can host groups of up to 24 guests and overlook the Delaware River.

In addition to an indoor swimming pool and hot tub, visitors can enjoy a large sundeck or sunbathe on the resort’s private beach. Other facilities include a wellness center, basketball and tennis courts, golf, archery, putting green, and driving range.

9. Kalahari Resort Pocono Mountains, Pocono Manor

Located in the middle of the Poconos, the Kalahari Resort in the Poconos is ideal for the whole family. If you’re bringing the grandkids along, they will love this resort. Guests enjoy the largest indoor water park in America, which spans 220,000 square feet, with a retractable roof, a lazy river (my favorite), water slides, a family hot tub, and a wave pool. They even have an adults-only swim-up bar.

They have about 1,000 rooms for visitors, with suites of up to five bedrooms. Suites have balconies, bunk beds, fireplaces, and even a pool table.

There are 11 options for mealtimes! From Italian and steakhouse restaurants to a more casual pizza spot and buffet options. They also have a tavern and bar as a sanctuary for adults. Visit the Kalahari Spa for treatments using organic ingredients and a little lounge in their Relaxation Sanctuary for those looking for a little quiet.

While a family resort and very busy and noisy around the waterpark area on weekends and in the summer or holidays, it is a lot of fun for the active mature traveler… Weekdays in the offseason are much less crowded and quieter.

Whichever lodging accommodation you choose, you are sure to enjoy your time in the serene and scenic four-county Pocono Mountain region.

  • Inability to migrate to a new community
  • Lack of adult role models in academia

9 Best Vacation Destinations for Seniors

Whether you're looking for a relaxing retreat or an active getaway, I have a resort for you.

senior trip ideas in pennsylvania

You're retired — and vaccinated — and it's time to treat yourself to a well-deserved and probably long-awaited vacation. With no time constraints, you can plan a stay of a few weeks, and you might appreciate the convenience of a destination resort that lets you arrive, unpack, and enjoy dining and most activities on site.

Like many retirees, you're game to try something novel or pick up a new hobby, and you want to continue (or start) focusing on your well-being and health. The right mix of relaxation and activities, opportunities for time outdoors, pampering, and fun should complete the picture. A place designed for adults might be ideal, and perhaps a (short) visit and some entertainment for the grandkids and family would work well, especially if your get-togethers have been limited over the past year.

We've searched for a few places based on these amenities, and we have suggestions for you here. We hope at least one will spark your vacation imagination and get your planning started.

Suncadia Resort: Cle Elum, Washington

Set in Washington's Cascade Mountains and the Wenatchee Washington National Forest, this picturesque resort offers rich scenery, crisp mountain air, and a variety of outdoor activities. Choose The Lodge for panoramic river and mountain views or The Inn, an elegant lodge with golf course views.

Play golf, try your hand at archery, or grab an axe and heave it at the target. (Yes, axe throwing is a popular new activity!) Hike or stroll along deer and elk trails, rent a bike, canoe, or kayak, or find your inner artist with a resort-provided acrylic painting kit or a tie-dye lesson. Begin the day with guided meditation or a full-body outdoor workout class. Fit in a spa treatment for some pampering. Should the grandkids arrive for a visit, there's a pool, stuffed bear factory, and plenty of ways to play at Suncadia.

Big Cedar Lodge: Ridgedale, Missouri

This wilderness resort in Missouri's Ozark Mountains is set on 4,600 acres of natural beauty. A wide variety of accommodations lets you choose the perfect place to stay, whether you decide on one of the three grand lodges, a cozy private log cabin, luxurious cottage, or a glamping unit at Camp Long Creek.

Five golf courses and practice facilities include the new Payne's Valley course, driving range, full-swing simulator, and the Tom Watson putting course. Sharpen your aim at the Bass Pro Shops Shooting Academy with sporting clays, American Skeet, and more. Hike, bike, take a scenic nature walk, or journey to Top of the Rock Lost Canyon on an electric cart for waterfalls and lake views. Fitness classes, exercise equipment, and a personal trainer are available. If the grandkids visit, they'll love the Kids Adventure Club and Nature Discovery Center.

Lone Mountain Ranch: Big Sky, Montana

Just 18 miles from Yellowstone National Park, the ranch is set in the Montana Rockies about 40 minutes from Bozeman Airport. Stay in one of 27 historic log cabins, ranging from one to six bedrooms, each individually named and offering wood stoves, cozy rustic furnishings, full baths, forested settings, and stunning views.

In true ranch style, there's horseback riding, with backcountry trails and experienced wranglers to ensure a memorable experience for riders of all levels and ages as well as naturalist guided hikes, mountain biking, and fly fishing, for first-timers or seasoned anglers. Paddle a canoe or kayak or spend a day floating down the Madison River in a tube. Take an excursion to Yellowstone National Park, curated by an experienced guide. Start your day with an outdoor yoga class, and then have some fun with archery or axe throwing. Adventure programs for youth are available as well.

Mission Point: Mackinac Island, Michigan

This waterfront resort boasts the longest lakeshore on the island, and guests can stay in the Main Lodge or the more secluded Straits Lodge with dog-friendly rooms. Guest rooms and suites in both lodges feature comfortable furnishings, and the Bois Blanc Suite offers 1,500 square feet, full kitchen, and laundry facilities — ideal for longer stays.

Relax on the expansive lawn in an Adirondack chair, stroll downtown for shopping (Don't miss the famous Mackinac Island fudge), play golf, swim in the pool, or soak in a hot tub to your heart's content. Treat yourself to an afternoon at the Lakeside Spa and Salon. The vintage feel of the island, a National Historic Landmark, is enhanced by its ban on motor vehicles as well as its historic architecture and relaxed pace. Take a horse-drawn carriage ride to learn about the island, and you'll be transported to another era.

Montage Palmetto Bluff: Bluffton, South Carolina

Guest rooms, suites, cottages, and residences are available in the 20,000-acre community that encompasses a nature preserve, two picturesque villages, a riverfront marina, and Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, making it easy to choose accommodations for your visit. In fact, should you fall in love with the Lowcountry lifestyle, moss-draped oaks, and natural beauty, you might make a permanent home there as many visitors have over the years.

Play golf at the May River Golf Club, kayak, canoe, or take a boat tour and spot dolphins cruising along with you. Sporting clay stations wind through a 40-acre forest for shooting practice and games. Tennis, bocce ball, and pickleball courts are offered for both play and instruction, if you want to improve your skills. Stroll or take a leisurely bike ride among tree-lined paths. When the family comes to visit, the youngsters will enjoy Paintbox for games, crafts, movies, scavenger hunts, nature walks, and outdoor activities, and they'll thrill to the treehouses as they climb to the observation deck.

Cavallo Point: Sausalito, California

Located at the foot of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and set among 75,000 acres in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Cavallo Point offers stunning scenery, world class dining, and a variety of experiences. Historical architecture blends with contemporary design, giving guests the choice of historic or contemporary-style rooms, many boasting views of San Francisco Bay, in a serene setting just minutes from the city.

Hike, bike, run, or walk during the day, and spend the evening around an outdoor fire pit. Take a guided hike, yoga class, sunset cruise, or an exciting Seaplane or Helicopter tour. At the Healing Arts Center & Spa, guests can choose from a variety of wellness experiences. Cooking classes and demonstrations are offered, and the Cavallo Point Oyster Experience features chef Tony Adams shucking and grilling fresh oysters to be served with expertly paired wine and cocktails. Camp Cavallo for Kids keeps them busy with nature hikes, art, games, and historic exploration.

Arizona Biltmore: Phoenix, Arizona

If classic luxury is the vacation style you're after, the newly renovated Arizona Biltmore , a Waldorf Astoria Resort, should be high on your list. Built in 1929, the 39-acre estate at the base of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve is reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour with 701 accommodations (including 36 suites, 28 cottages, 54 villas) and Frank Lloyd Wright-influenced design.

Closed for more than a year for major renovations, the resort reopened in May 2021 with new restaurants, a day spa, and seven pools including an adults-only pool and family pool with a 65-foot water slide. Play golf, tennis, or pickleball or take advantage of concierge arrangements for hot air balloon rides, stargazing, biking, hiking, and more. At Tierra Luna Spa, select from a range of curated therapies or join a yoga or aqua aerobics class. Be sure to order a Tequila Sunrise at the Wright Bar where the cocktail was invented.

Bungalows Key Largo: Key Largo, Florida

This all-inclusive, adults-only resort is a tropical oasis where you can choose from a variety of activities or just relax in a poolside cabana. Stay in a waterfront bungalow or one set among the lush gardens with a soaking tub and outdoor shower.

Water sports include kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, and swimming in the protected bay where you might see manatees and dolphins glide by. Don your snorkel gear to float among colorful native fish. Join a beachfront yoga class or do your own workout at the full-service Fitness Tiki Hut and then head to the Zen Garden Spa's steam room, sauna, or outdoor treatment cabana for a soothing massage. Find your spot at the Sunset Pool, and sip frozen drinks while you work on your tan. Watch the sun go down on a catamaran cruise with a cocktail in hand.

Rancho Bernardo Inn: San Diego, California

Guest rooms, suites, and specially designed accessible rooms are set among lush gardens for a secluded feel. Private patios and balconies offer garden, spa, or golf course views. The resort 's 250 acres and San Diego's perfect weather provide opportunities for al fresco dining and outdoor activities.

Play golf at the pristine 18-hole course, relax by the pool, or have fun with lawn games like cornhole, croquet, or oversized Connect Four. Tour the Chef's Garden to see the source of the restaurants' fresh ingredients or get some ideas for your home garden. Spend some time at the spa, take a sunset yoga class, or arrange a private session. You can interact with a trained bird of prey with a private falconry encounter. If young ones visit, they'll love the "dive-in movies" at the family pool, the well-equipped game room, and San Diego's nearby attractions.

The 10 Best Road Trips in Pennsylvania

senior trip ideas in pennsylvania

The state of Pennsylvania is a diverse East Coast destination, with a combination of magnificent natural beauty as well as bustling urban hubs. While driving around the state, you’ll find mountainous regions, wine trails, amusement parks, historical landmarks, and white water rafting. In Pennsylvania, the larger cities are located in the southern ends, with Philadelphia situated on the southeastern side and Pittsburgh on the southwest. But no matter where you drive or visit, both places are great starting points for a variety of fun road trips around the state.

Pennsylvania’s Grand Canyon

Yes, there is a really a grand canyon in Pennsylvania , though the official name is Pine Creek Gorge. This ancient canyon and surrounding trails offer plenty of incredible lookout points with jaw-dropping panoramic views. Choose the most picturesque drive (along routes 44 and 414) as these roads run along the Pine Creek Rail Tail’s southern side. You can drive around the area in three or four hours, and you can picnic along the way, but it’s best to spend at least one night to appreciate this natural wonder. (The town of Williamsport has the most lodging options). You’ll find other attractions in Pennsylvania’s Grand Canyon, including hiking, fishing, mountain biking, and several museums.

Susquehanna Heartland Wine Trail

Courtesy of Shade Mountain Winery & Vineyards

With over 300 wineries in the state, Pennsylvania has no shortage of wine trails for road trippers (there are ten to choose from). As for The Rittenhouse Hotel, it’s the ideal vacation base as you explore Philadelphia.

It’s in a prime location, after all.

However, it’s pretty popular, so expect crowds, especially during the peak season.

Want to enjoy a wide array of activities without dealing with the crowds?

Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is an excellent alternative.

Its only downside is that its bathrooms could be bigger.

How I Picked The Destinations

In picking the destinations on this list, I first considered my personal experiences in Pennsylvania.

And I’ve had many of those.

I visited Pennsylvania many times with my family.

I also went there several times for my work as a travel writer.

To ensure a complete review, I also considered the information provided by fellow travelers during my visits.

Our Rating Method

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

  • Kid-friendly Activities: I use this to evaluate the availability and variety of family-friendly amenities at every property. Does it feature playgrounds and kids’ clubs? Does it organize events designed specifically for kids? I ask myself these questions whenever I rate this property’s kid-friendly activities.
  • Family Accommodations: This is used to assess the family accommodations of the property. Are the rooms spacious? Does it offer family suites with connecting rooms? Can it accommodate families of different sizes? Is there a crib or baby-proofing in every room? These questions are essential whenever I rate the property’s family accommodations.
  • Dining Options: This evaluates the dining options at the property. Are there kid-friendly options at the property? Is there an on-site restaurant that caters to everyone’s dietary preferences and needs? I use these questions to assess the dining options of every property.
  • Safety and Security: I use this criterion to assess the safety and security of every property. Are the premises secured? Is the staff trained to handle any emergency? I consider these factors when rating the property’s safety and security.
  • Value for Money: This is used to evaluate the value for money of every property. Are the room rates reasonable? Are the services, activities, and amenities suitable for the price? I ask myself these questions to rate the value for money provided by the property.
  • Location and Accessibility: This measures how accessible the property is for families. How far is it from the popular family attractions? Is it easily accessible via public transportation? I use these questions to evaluate the property’s location and accessibility.

senior trip ideas in pennsylvania

Based on my experience, each vacation spot on this list has something unique to offer everyone.

At Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, the kids and I couldn’t get enough of The Peak and our paintball sessions.

My partner and I explored Rittenhouse Square easily, with the Rittenhouse Hotel as our base.

We loved resting in our spacious room after a long day outside.

Meanwhile, the kids had a blast at Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort.

They played volleyball, tennis, and arcade games in the hotel’s designated areas.

But of all these places, I still think the Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center is a cut above the rest.

We enjoyed one of our best family vacations in Pennsylvania, with its top-notch amenities.

My kids and I bonded during our swimming sessions in the infinity pool.

My partner and I also managed to go on a beautiful wellness retreat in the spa.

You may encounter minor noise issues here.

But they’re nothing compared to the value for money you’ll get.

Autumn Colors (9 Days, Boston Airport And Post Trip Hotel Transfer)

Tour director and driver were excellent!!! We were very disappointed with the coach. Something happened and apparently we didn’t get the bus we were supposed to. This bus was old , dirty, the seats didn’t work, some of the windows lost their seal so it was hard to see out of them. The video system didn’t work for the tour director to show pictures. On a positive note the food was great and the accommodations were very nice. The director and driver took it all in stride and that helped. Guess when you spend the amount of money that you do on these trips you expect a little better.

Classic Fall Foliage Tour

Classic Fall Foliage

I was on a fall foliage tour with Globus. The guide was great, the itinerary was also very nice and I enjoyed it very much. I was however disappointed that despite Globus claiming on their website that they have "small group" tours that average 24 people there were 42 on our tour. I guess I should look for advertisement of the total group size instead of thinking that an "average" of 24 would be closer to 24 than to 42! Proof of vaccination was required, which was necessary for me to sign up in the first place but I truly felt deceived that my "small group" was almost double the average.

Boston Cape Cod & The Islands (Classic, 8 Days) Tour

Boston Cape Cod & The Islands (Classic, 8 Days)

Cons: 1. Daniel Webster Inn was over-rated. Would not stay there again. 2. Visit to the Plimouth Plantation was a waste of time. Spent way too much time there. 3. Transportation from Logan Airport to the Boston Hyatt was a mess!!!! No signs, no directions, and the taxi driver had no idea what to do with the voucher. Ended up paying for the taxi! Ridiculous!! 4. Service at the included dinner at the Daniel Webster Inn was horrible!! Kathy (our waitress) should be fired! However, the food was delicious! 5. Not enough time spent in Nantucket. 6. Way too much time spent at the Breakers in Newport. 7. This should not be considered an 8-day tour. All we did on day 8 was ride on the bus to the airport! Pros: 1. Tour director Robin was outstanding!! Wellness director, Brittany, was also fabulous! 2. Canolis, Cape Code Chips and Cape Codders on the bus was a nice touch! Thoroughly enjoyed the snacks on the bus! 3. Ferry to Martha's Vineyard was fun! Thoroughly enjoyed the talk session/information about the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association. Very interesting. 4. Local guide tour of Nantucket Island was great! Lots of interesting information. Not enough time spent in Nantucket. 5. Loved the Harbor View hotel! 6. Sailing on the Adirondack II was THE BEST!! Need to offer more than one Mimosa! 7. Luggage service was great.
