Daelim Changgo Gallery COLUMN 대림창고 78 Seongsui-ro, Seongdong-gu, Seoul 서울특별시 성동구 성수이로 78 Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Must-Visit Warehouse-Turned-Cafe & Art Gallery At Seongsu-dong Daelim Changgo resides in a gigantic warehouse with a faded red brick façade. Half of the compound is an art gallery, displaying installation arts and paintings all over.

Wandering around the gallery with a drink in your hand sounds like a good afternoon to me.

One of the most IG-worthy items to get is the Strawberry & Cream Croissant (8,500 Won). While not the cheapest around, it is topped with generous sweet juicy strawberries and delicate fresh cream topping adds a light and creamy element to the flaky pastry, making it a satisfying treat.

Daelim Changgo uses Geisha single origin coffee as its signature blend. A cup costs 15,000 Won, with five different blends to choose from.

There are simpler coffee choices, like the Caffe Latte (6,000 Won), Einspanner (6,500 Won) and Vanilla Latte (7,000 Won).

NUDAKE Haus Dosan 50 Apgujeong-ro 46-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul Opening Hours: 11am – 9pm, (Mon – Sun)

NUDAKE Seongsu 26 Seongsuiro 7(chil)-gil, Seongdong-gu, Seoul Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Dessert Cafe Under Gentle Monster Brand NUDAKE 누데이크 the artisanal desert brand under Gentle Monster has opened their first flagship store in their home ground at Apgujeong HAUS Dosan. There is another outlet at Seongsu.

Their objective is to provide a space for quirky gourmet pastries and treats, that builds on the conceptual aesthetics of its parent company.

All the pastries are neatly displayed on the elongated wooden table surrounding the centrepiece, which mimics a walk down an art gallery where customers can view and pick their choice of pastries.

The Peak (23,000 Won) stood out among all, a black layered croissant tart crust, with generous amount of striking green due to the matcha milk spread, in contrast to the black charcoal tart.

A number of signature drinks can be found here, each also looking as unique as its concept, one of which is their Nu Truffle (9,000 Won), a mocha latte topped with truffle-infused cream and a mini black croissant sitting on top.

London Bagel Museum 런던베이글뮤지엄 – Anguk 안국점 20 Bukchon-ro 4-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul 서울특별시 종로구 북촌로4길 20 Opening Hours: 8am – 6pm (Mon – Sun)

Bagel Paradise And Super Popular London Bagel Museum 런던베이글뮤지엄 has stores at Anguk (Bukchon Hanok Village at Jongno-gu) and Dosan (Gangnam-gu).

A shortcut is to get it takeaway, for which you will get to enter the cafe much faster. Still, I heard friends waiting for more than 2 hours (that’s even if they allow you) at the Anguk store.

With so many Bagels to choose from, you can take a cue from a list beside the crates, which ranks the best cream cheese bagels at the café.

For fans of munching on the bagel itself, go for the Original Bagel (4,700 Won), Pretzel Plain Bagel (4,700 Won), Sesame Bagel (4,700 Won), Blueberry Bagel (4,700 Won), Black Olive Bagel (4,700 Won), and Dark Chocolate Bagel (4,900 Won), among others.

Cafe Layered – Buchon Hanok Village 84-14, Jae-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul 서울특별시 종로구 북촌로2길 2-3 Opening Hours: 8am – 10pm (Mon – Fri), 10am – 10pm (Sat – Sun)

With multiple locations across the city including Yeonnam-dong, Bukchon Hanok Village (Anguk), and The Hyundai Seoul, Cafe Layered 레이어드 offers a wide variety of Scones to satisfy your cravings.

As you step into the cafe, you will be captivated by the beautifully presented displays of Scones, baked goods and cakes. Scones have a way of raisin’ our spirits.

What immediately caught my attention was the vibrant and colourful display of Scones. Customers have the freedom to pick and choose from the wide array of options available.

Each Scone is reasonably priced between 5,000 to 9,000 Won, making it still accessible for everyone to enjoy these treats.

Among the sweet options, there are choices from Cinnamon Pecan Scones, Earl Grey Scones, Strawberry Compote Scones, and Blueberry Compote Scones.

These scones were not quite like the usual, baked till quite golden brown on the outside.

ongeundal 옹근달 41-1 Seongsuiro 7(chil)-gil, Seongsu-dong 2(i)-ga, Seongdong-gu, Seoul 서울특별시 성동구 성수이로7길 41-1 Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Popular Bakery Cafes At Seongsu-dong With Pretty Bakes, Cruffins And Hip Atmosphere Ongeundal 옹근달 meaning “Humble Moon” in Korean, is a well-known café and patisserie also at Seongsu-dong 성수동 .

The best part about the café is its eclectic layout, with a huge variety of seating. The building has two floors and a rooftop terrace, as well as an alfresco garden area.

The coffee bar and counter are where the cruffins are displayed. Ongeundal does their cruffins with some sort of filling at the center, depending on the flavour.

Some say that cruffins taste like cinnamon rolls in texture.

What seems to sell out fast are the Cruffin au Famplemousse (grapefruit) Earl Grey and the Cruffin au Cacahouete (peanut).

Coffee choices are par for the course, from a simple Espresso (5,000 Won) to a popular Café Latte (6,000 Won).

OUDE 오우드 101-1 Yeonmujang-gil, B동 Seongdong-gu, Seoul, South Korea 서울특별시 성동구 B동 연무장길 101-1 Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Minimalist Bakery Cafe Known For Cruffins & Cronuts At Seongsu-dong OUDE 오우드 is a bakery café at Seongsu-dong 성수동 housed in a standalone factory building, equipped with both seats indoors and outdoors.

Inside, the tall ceilings with spaced out furnitures makes it a cosy and conducive space to dine in. Here they’re famous for their cronuts, which are all displayed on the long table at the entrance.

The Caramel Custard (6,500 Won) came with light and flaky with a nice crunch, topped with crushed nuts and pistachio for an added texture. The savoury sweet caramel sauce was pretty addictive, and balanced well with the buttery taste of the cronut.

The Pistachio Cruffin (5,000 Won) was my favourite, nicely crafted with the air pockets to create an airy texture, and generously piped with pistachio cream within.

A cup of Espresso starts from 4,000 Won and a cup of White is priced at 5,000 Won.

2 different types of blend is used at OUDE for their espresso-based drinks – a blend from Kenya & Colombia, and a blend from Ethiopia & Colombia.

Onion Anguk 망고플레이트 South Korea, Seoul, Jongno-gu, Gyedong-gil 5 (Anguk Station, Exit 3) 서울특별시 종로구 계동길 5 Tel: +82 70-7543-2123 Opening Hours: 7am – 10pm (Mon – Fri), 9am – 10pm (Sat – Sun)

Hanok-Themed Cafe Near Gyeongbokgung Palace This is the 3rd outlet of Cafe Onion (and probably the most tourist-visited), located at Jongno-gu near Gyeongbokgung Place (main royal palace of the Joseon dynasty), for those of you who are unfamiliar with the area.

It is found near Anguk station, at Bukchon Hanok Village.

This totally departs from the industrial vibes in the previous Onion outlets , conceptualised with a different aesthetic spectrum from the rest.

This outlet is based and decorated like a Hanok, which is known as a traditional Korean house first designed and built in the 14th century during the Joseon Dynasty.

You can also spot the well-known Pandoro – the famed Italian-style bread covered in powdered sugar at this outlet as well.

Cheong Su Dang 청수당 (淸水堂) 31-9 Donhwamun-ro 11na-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea 서울특별시 종로구 돈화문로11나길 31-9 Opening Hours: 11:30am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Tranquil Café In A Bamboo Forest Cheongsudang 청수당 (淸水堂) is one of the most aesthetic Hanok-style cafes in the vintage neighbourhood of Ikseon-dong 익선동 .

Designed with an aquatic theme, Cheongsudang’s ethos is to promote the value of slowness. Here you can take your time and immerse yourself in a tranquil setting.

Customers can choose to sit at the tables in main dining hall, or choose the shoes off tatami-area for a view of the inner garden.

Their signature item is their Castella and Fromage Cakes (13,000 Won – 18,000 Won), baked in square-shaped pottery.

The brown colour square-shaped pottery was so well made that I initially thought that it was an edible toast.

Note that the Soufflé Castella are freshly baked upon order and will take up to 20 – 30 minutes waiting time.

With an aesthetic environment and insta-worthy desserts that lived up to expectation, Cheong Su Dang is definitely one of the cafes I will recommend when you are in Ikseon-dong.

There is another smaller gallery outlet at Garosu-gil.

Seoul Coffee 1945 (Ikseondong) 서울커피 33-3 Supyo-ro 28-gil, Jongno 1(il).2(i).3(sam).4(sa), Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea 서울특별시 종로구 수표로28길 33-3 Opening Hours: 11am – 10:30pm (Mon – Sun)

Charming Cafe Hidden Within Ikseon-dong Hanok Village One of the most popular cafes at Ikseon-dong 익선동 is Seoul Coffee 1945 서울커피, where you can slurp on delicious beverages, eat their famous Butter-Black Bread while enjoying the rustic, old fashioned Seoul atmosphere.

This café has a unique vibe. It aspires to recreate the beauty and ambiance of Seoul in the 1980s and 1990s.

The furniture and décor of the café uses mostly antique and preserved items from that era, maintains a classical almost monochromatic style that is both pleasing to the eyes and stylish.

The café solely sells coffee and desserts, and signature items include the Butter Loaf Bread, Butter-Black Bread, Choco or White Choco Twisted Bread, Injeolmi Tiramisu, and Injeolmi Chocolate Truffle.

Sinleedoga 신이도가 20-12 Jandari-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul 서울 마포구 잔다리로 20-12 Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Beautiful & Hidden Korean Cafe In A Traditional Hanok In Hongdae Sinleedoga 신이도가 (sometimes spelt as “Shinleedoga”) is an unmissable café with an exterior of a Hanok, located in an alley between ordinary modern houses, in the trendy area of Hongdae.

There are three levels to the café, including a rooftop terrace and a ground floor courtyard area.

Sit on one of the log benches inside that faces the courtyard, and tuck into a cup of hot Latte (5900 Won), Café Mocha (6400 Won), or Nurungji Latte (6800 Won), which is a coffee made with scorched rice.

It is only fair to pair the drinks with some pastries. The Snow Castella (8900 Won) is the showstopper because of the powdered sugar dusting that envelopes the soft cake.

Consider also the Injeolmi Toast (2500 Won). The bread was coated with a generous layer of injeolmi powder, which has a nutty, toasty flavour, contrasted with slightly stick and chewy texture on the inside.

Creative, Instagrammable Cafe At Hapjeong With Award-Winning Interiors One of the first things that customers may notice upon entering Perception Cafe is its unique and striking décor – and this is despite its small space in Hapjeong (near Hongdae area).

A cup of “Atmosphere of the place” (7,000 Won) is an ice-crème latte, a mix of sweet, bitter, and acid. “Temperature in the day” (6,500 Won) is a mocha crème latte, while “Memory of the moment” (6,000 Won) is an Einspanner.

Baked goods served at the café are homemade, which is a plus point. Have a financier (3,300 Won) that comes in six flavours, among which includes the sweet Salt-Caramel and the savoury Basil+Tomato.

Fresh out of the bakery are also Strawberry Cheese Cake, Chunk Cookies, Canele, Cheesecake, and Tiramisu. Each of the homemade bakes are priced between 3,300 Won to 7,500 Won.

Coffee Nap Roasters 망고플레이트 453-32 Yeonnam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea (Hongik University Station) 서울특별시 마포구 연남동 연남로 Opening Hours: 9am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Cafe With A “Red Brick Hill” Within Hidden in an alleyway away from the enclave of cafes in the ever so hip neighbourhood of Yeonnam-dong is the second branch of Coffee Nap Coffee Roasters 망고플레이트, the first being in Pyeongtaek.

Since its establishment in Seoul, it quickly became popular with not just with the natives, but also with foreign Instagrammers and café-hoppers.

The reason is obvious when you look at the café’s design alone.

Floor-to-ceiling glass windows line two sides of the café, as though to show off the centerpiece of the café’s interior design – the “hill” of 7000 red bricks.

Continuous with the flooring, it serves as a sitting area for patrons.

A few shoots of bamboo are also planted in the café to incorporate an element of nature.

Rust Bakery 러스트 베이커리 15 Gyeongin-ro 79-gil, Mullae-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Must-Visit Rustic Cafe At Mullae-dong, Transformed From Steel Industrial Factory Mullae-dong is a neighborhood located in the southwestern part of Seoul that’s known for its industrial warehouses and factories.

However, in recent years, the area has become a hub for artists, designers, and entrepreneurs, leading to the emergence of a vibrant cafe culture.

Transformed from an empty steel industrial factory, Rust Bakery’s rustic industrial outer facade but may look totally different when you step inside.

2 espresso blends are used here at Rust Bakery: Intenso blend with hints of dried plums, caramel, dark chocolate and Seasonal blend with notes of orange, peach and milk chocolate.

There was quite an assortment during my my visit, from Garlic Croissant (4,600 Won) to Apple Crumble Croissant (5,000 Won), English Madeline (4,700 Won), Cheese Brownie (5,500 Won), Cruffin and Scones.

My favourite was the Garlic Croissant (4,600 Won), a croissant version of the once famed Korean Cream Cheese Garlic Bread, piped with generous amount of garlic cream cheese within the buttery and flaky croissant.

Pont Cafe 폰트 33-4, Mullae-dong 2-ga, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul Opening Hours: 12pm – 9pm (Mon – Sun)

Charming Coffee Roastery At Mullae-dong, Transformed From Old Railway Office Pont occupies 5 factory units with a cafe, roastery, retail showroom and seminar space under the same roof.

It took over the space previously occupied by a railway office in the 1940s, with a former railway depot nearby.

The curved coffee bar extends all the way from the entrance to the dine in area, welcoming guests by connecting the five factory units.

Inside, the orange-toned interior space using plywood, terracotta tiles and plaster walls, symbolises their bright and warm services.

The bakes are all displayed along the curved coffee bar.

The Choco Palmier (4,500 Won) was my favourite, with a crispy and buttery puff pastry, dipped in hot chocolate sauce the the extra indulgence.

As a coffee roastery themselves, Pont focuses on their Single Origin Filtered Coffee such as the 2021 Guatemala C.O.E #4 La Reforma Geisha Washed (9,000 Won), Ethiopia Guji Hambela Alaska Washed/ Natural (6,000 Won) and Honduras El Puente Washed (5,500 Won).

25 Best Cafes in Seoul, South Korea

Cafes in Seoul

Home > South Korea

There is quite literally an abundance of unique cafes in Seoul, so if you’re a coffee lover looking for a cool place to sip your coffee in, then Seoul definitely is the way to go.

From animal themed cafes (cats, dogs, sheep and raccoons all featured in this article) and hidden cafes tucked away in narrow alleys to modern and minimalistic spaces with unique interiors, there’s something for everyone in this list of the best cafes in Seoul. I have personally visited all of the cafes below and am happy to admit I have an (un)healthy obsession with just about any Korean cafe.

Since I know not everyone manages to visit more than one or two cafes a day, I decided to narrow down my extensive list of the best cafes in Seoul to 25 for you to easily choose from. In this article are also a few TikTok viral Korean cafes that I am certain a lot of people will recognize. And most of these best cafes in Seoul are even on my TikTok account !

My top 25 Best Cafes in Seoul (updated with every new visit)

1. hong kong milk company.

This is a real hidden gem (for now) and the walk there is worth it! Amazing interior, views of Namsan tower through stained glass windows and the most heavenly pudding I’ve ever tasted in my life. I can highly recommend this cafe in Seoul.

Check out my TikTok video from Hong Kong Milk Company in Seoul.

2. Greem Cafe – 2D Cafe in Seoul

The cafe’s name, Greem, comes from a Korean word which means a “cartoon” or a “painting”. This particular cafe is one of the best cafes in Seoul. Why, you ask?

Well, this is a 2d cafe in Seoul and when you step inside of it, it looks like you’re in a cartoon! From the drink lids to the furniture, everything about Greem cafe is cool and you’ll definitely want to snap lots of photos here! Without a doubt one of the most instagrammable cafes in Seoul!

Check out my TikTok video from Greem Cafe.

3. Nuldam Space – Send a letter to yourself

Looking for something special to make your trip to Seoul extra memorable? Check out Nuldam Space – this unique cafe in Seoul offers a truly one-of-a-kind experience. Here, you can send a postcard or letter to yourself from the future! Grab a drink and the letter kit, write your message, use wax to seal it and then place it in the box for your chosen date of when you would like it delivered.

You can purchase both international and domestic stamps right at the counter. The letters will be held safely until that chosen date, when they’ll be sent directly to your mailbox.  No wonder its so popular on TikTok and so high on the list of the best cafes in Seoul.

4. Onion Cafe – Hanok house cafe

This Seoul cafe is viral on TikTok, and for a good reason – it’s absolutely adorable! Located in a traditional hanok house, Onion Cafe is the perfect spot for an afternoon of tea, coffee and pastry. You’ll find a couple of Onion Cafe’s in Seoul, but the one that’s in a hanok house is in Anguk.

5. Cat’s Playground Myeongdeong – Cat Cafe with over 50 cats

If you love cats, then Cat’s Playground in Myeongdeong is the place for you. This cat cafe has over 50 cats and they charge an entry fee to all visitors. But don’t worry, it’s only $10 and it includes a drink! All cats are very friendly and you can easily spend a few hours here just hanging out with them.

Check out my TikTok video from Cat’s Playground.

6. Tongue Planet – Tongue cookies and quirky drinks

Tongue Planet is another one of the best cafes in Seoul’s area of Seongsu. They have a wide variety of unique drinks, snacks and desserts, but their most popular items are their tongue cookies and distressed face cake.

The cafe itself is very big and even has beds for sitting, as well as lots of out-of-the-box furniture design. I loved this place and since Seongsu is my second favorite area in Seoul, I highly recommend a visit here.

Check out my TikTok video from Tongue Planet.

7. Daelim Changgo – Industrial cafe, coworking

Almost right next door to Tongue Planet is Daelim Changgo. An industrial cafe with beautiful pastries, this is one of the cafes in Seoul that is also great for coworking. So if you need to get some work done while sipping on a latte, this is the place!

Check out my TikTok video from Daelim Changgo.

8. Nudake Haus Dosan – Unusual desserts and coffee

Nukade has a couple of locations in Seoul, but I love the one in Haus Dosan. They have all the unique pastries, desserts and drinks here, but the bonus is that it’s in the basement of the house where Gentle Monster (sunglasses) and Tamburins (perfumes) are located as well. But beware, it’s very easy to spend money here, especially if you like the last two Korean brands.

Check out my TikTok video from Nudake.

9. Moment Hannam – Minimalist haven

Moment is one of those cafes where you enter and just feel at ease – and this is why it’s on this list of the best cafes in Seoul. The soft jazz playing in the background, the minimalist design and the absolutely amazing coffee – you can’t go wrong with this place. They even have a few cool photo spots here so make sure you come with a camera!

Check out my TikTok video from Moment Hannam.

10. Cafe Munei – Cake sandwich

One of my favorite cafes in Seoul is Cafe Munei. Partially because it was 1 min walk from my Airbnb and partially because their drinks were really good. But for the most part, it was because of their cake that is actually a sandwich. So if you’re in the mood for a sweet sandwich, I highly recommend you try it out.

Check out my TikTok video from Cafe Munei.

11. Wonhyeongdeul – Crazy cake designs

Just a couple of minutes away from Cafe Munei is Wonhyeongdeul, a cafe known for its made-by-order crazy cake designs. The cafe has a hipster vibe and decor and the cakes and coffees they offer are very tasty. We shared the most popular pink one and it’s 100% worth the order. They also do cakes by order so don’t forget to add it to your list of the best cafes in Seoul if you happen to be celebrating a special occasion during your visit to Korea.

Check out my TikTok video from Wonhyeongdeul.

12. Time to Tune – Small and cozy cafe

And my third favorite cafe in the same area as Munei and Wonhyeongdeul is Time to Tune. The cafe is very small and super cozy and their coffee and donuts taste beautiful. The coffee here is in my top 5 of everywhere I’ve been in Seoul!

PS: the cafe is now a brunch spot with the name Hoook Euljiro.

Check out my TikTok video from Time to Tune.

13. Pink Pool Cafe – Pool cafe with lots of pastries

Stylenanda Pink Pool Cafe was one of my first outings when it comes to unique cafes in Seoul. The pool area is incredibly Instagrammable and I love their choice of drinks and desserts. It’s located in the trendy Hongdae area and on the top floor of the Stylenanda store (which you also need to browse). I wrote an article from my visit to this cafe and you can find it here .

PS: I believe the pool is not the same anymore, but still worth a visit!

Check out my TikTok video from the Pink Pool Cafe.

16. Happy Bear Day – Cute and colorful cafe

This Hongdae cafe is probably the cutest and most colorful place I’ve visited in my whole life. They have cakes with really pretty design that ACTUALLY taste good, as well as plenty of other desserts and bear cookies in different flavors. On the photo is the red velvet cake and a choco cookie.

Check out my TikTok video from Happy Bear Day.

17. Thanks Nature Cafe – Sheep cafe in Hongdae

In the heart of Hongdae, a popular Seoul district, right next to a busy street lies one of best themed cafes in Seoul – a sheep cafe. There are two sheep in this cafe (or just outside of it) and you can pet them as much as you want! There is no admission fee, but you do have to make a purchase to get in with the sheep.

I ordered a croffle and a latte here and they were delicious! I pet some sheep before getting my order, as well as after I finished, and I gotta say – my day was made!

Check out my TikTok video from the Sheep Cafe.

18. Seoul Angmusae – Kouign Amann and cinnamon rolls

Near Seoul Forest in the area of Ttukseom is Seoul Angmusae, a Seoul cafe that went viral on TikTok due to its delicious Kouign Amann and cinnamon rolls. When going there expect to stand in a line to place an order. You will only be able to sit inside if you order a drink.

19. Soha Saltpond – Salt bread cafe

Ikseon-dong is small yet packed with cosy hanok cafes. I walked past Soha Saltpond one evening and noticed almost all their pastries were gone. So I figured we have to come back earlier one day, and we did! The cafe is small and cosy and their coffee and pastries tasted amazing.

20. Cafe Tape – Space cakes and theme

I didn’t cafe-hop in Itaewon so much, but Cafe Tape is one of the best cafes in Seoul if you’re looking for Instagrammable cakes and drinks. The interior is pretty cool too and they have a rooftop area where you could also enjoy a craft beer.

Check out my TikTok video from Cafe Tape.

21. Appiforet 아삐뽀레 – Animal sculptures in a hanok

If you’re looking for a cafe in Ikseon-dong with a great selection of cakes and ice-cream than this is the place! The inside is also very beautiful and there’s lots of people taking pictures here. I opted for a carrot cake and it was delicious!

22. Hyemindang – Secret spot cafe

Coffee lovers unite – this secret cafe has drip coffee and the taste and flavors are so good you’ll feel like you won’t be sleeping for a week. It’s a little harder to spot so make sure you keep your eyes peeled to a tiny space between two buildings to enter.

23. Cafe 1인1상 – View of Eunpyeong Hanok Village

If you happen to be going to Eunpyeong Hanok Village (which you should!), you can’t give Cafe 1인1상 a miss. With a beautiful view of the village from the top floor, make sure you arrive just before they open to secure a spot just by the window. We ordered a variety of drinks and traditional desserts and everything tasted very delicious. This cafe is located a little further out from the city, but it’s definitely one of the best cafes in Seoul!

10 best cafes in Seoul to visit that make your airfare worth it

Pavin Chopra

Jetting off to Seoul anytime soon? I’m sure you’ve got a list of Korean BBQ spots to tick off, but don’t miss out on the cute cafes the city has to offer. From Insta-worthy interiors to food so adorable you can’t bear to eat it, Seoul has something special for everyone.

I discovered a few on my recent trip there and it warms my Seoul (thank you, God, for making me so hilarious) to share them with you.

1. Café Onion, Anguk

seoulcafe - cafe onion exterior

For one of the world’s most technologically-advanced nations, South Korea certainly does love its connections to the past. No surprises, then, that ‘hanok’ -themed cafes like the Cafe Onion branch near the unmissable Gyeongbokgung Palace are so popular.

seoulcafe - pandoro

That doesn’t take away from the amazing creations dreamed up by this cafe’s wonderfully creative team. Perhaps most iconic is their Pandoro . Café Onion’s versions adds a gigantic helping of icing sugar (tasted like Glucose powder to me) to the traditional Italian sweet bread to make it resemble a snow-covered mountain. Mine was a bit wonky structurally but right on point with deliciousness.

seoulcafe - trays of pastries

I strongly advise you to add some savouries to your tray— it will help balance out the mile-wide array of sweet indulgences. My smiley-face pizza definitely helped and the Cafe Latte was a delight on the sub-zero day as I sat outside. Inside, cushions on the floor straddle low tables— very quaint!

2. Caf é Layered, Yeonnam-dong

seoulcafe - cafe layered

From the outside, Café Layered is as unlike Café Onion as you please. This cute little red brick building stands out from a sea of smoothly-plastered white ones. If you’re drawn to the wonderfully-textured façade, wait till you step inside— it’s an artist’s wonderland!

seoulcafe - spread of pastries

An expansive multicolour spread awaits you, laid out on tables high and low. It’s not an exaggeration that every bit of horizontal surface, including the window sills are laden with pastries, scones and cakes. In fact, the place is so chock-a-block that it’s hard to navigate the narrow aisles.

seoulcafe - cakes

That is a small price to pay for the deliciousness with which Café Layered rewards you. And that artist’s wonderland? It’s more than the edible artistry all around you— there are interesting paintings, tapestries and even handmade stuffed toys on the walls and windows. What I remember most is how dense their cakes were and that I had a hard time finishing my huge slice despite the lovely taste.

3. Café Knotted, Anguk

seoulcafe - knotted cafe

Winter may not be the best time to visit Café Knotted — there’s always a queue outside. But I guess the people in the queue outside know that the baptism by ice is worth the trouble. So, there I was, one of those shivering souls at the Anguk branch, gazing longingly at the warm interior and the magnificent sweet treasures on the other side of the glass.

seoulcafe - smiley cakes

The cheeky smiley face licking its lips is emblazoned almost everywhere.

seoulcafe - donuts

Café Knotted is famous for its doughnuts and they are presented to you in a cup. It’s a cute sight, almost like a 3-dimensional Pac-Man waiting to devour those little white dots (of icing sugar). Sorry, Pac-Men, we eat you instead and you’re very tasty. Thank you for your service.

There’s cotton candy, croissants , ice-cream, coffee and tea as well. The colouring sheets and colour pencils add a cute whimsical touch.

4. Madang Flower Café, Ikseon-dong

seoulcafe - flower cafe

Koreans love their hanoks … and so do I! Madang Flower Café is located bang in the middle of an adorable hamlet of only traditionally-designed single-storey buildings. The area comes complete with rather narrow criss-crossing streets lined with pretty restaurants, stalls selling knickknacks and, of course, cakes and pastries!

seoulcafe - coffee

This café, though, stands out from afar with its pretty decor of colourful umbrellas, fairy lights (especially magical at dusk) and the boundary marked out by little pots of thigh-high trees. Apart from being a divinely-Instagram-able bakery, it’s also an actual flower shop! For the famished, there is coffee, tea, desserts and brunch, as well as beer and wine.

I was simply mesmerised by the combination of bright flowers and their soft scents combining with the aroma of freshly-baked goodies. Oh yes, If you are a fan of Korean serials, you may recognise Madang Flower Café from the show Goblin .

5. Cong Caphe, Yeonnam-dong

seoulcafe - garden

Vietnamese coffee marches on across the world, this time landing in Seoul in the avatar of Cong Caphe . The military green star of the franchise chain can be found at 6 locations across the country but I got my fix at the Yeonnam-dong outlet on the same day I was at Café Layered.

This was the brand’s first branch in the country in 2018. It boasts the characteristic laidback vibe that I found (and loved) when I was in Da Nang, South Vietnam late last year. There are some very interesting rustic armchairs while the crockery seems almost too antique-ish to be handed out to the public.

seoulcafe - interiors

Cong Caphe’s coconut coffee is on the menu here and it’s one that I recommend to anyone with a sweet tooth. Visit early in the day if you have a hankering for a Vietnamese breakfast.

6. Green Mile Coffee, Bukchon Hanok Village

seoulcafe - coffeeshop

Bukchon Hanok Village near the city’s artsy Insadong district is one of my favourite places in all of Seoul. Part of the reason is Green Mile Coffee . Despite the name, the café’s actual focus (and forte) is tea-based beverages and desserts.

As you have probably guessed, green tea features heavily as an ingredient on much of the menu. There is no better way to sample their wares than the Green Mile Latte , a verdant concoction of green tea concentrate and espresso.

seoulcafe - rooftop view

It’s not just what you drink but also where you drink it. Take your perch on Green Mile Coffee’s second floor and rooftop for the best and least-seen views of the hanok homes. I found it to be a particularly enthralling sight as the sun warmed me up in the crisp winter air.

Really, the whole décor with its muted brown and ochre shades is just ideal for relaxation.

7. Cheongsudang, Ikseon-dong

seoulcafe - garden view

Another of my beloved Ikseon-dong finds, Cheongsudang is a serene ocean of tranquillity amidst the buzz of activity in the area. The experience begins even before you enter, with the soothing sound of running water calling out to your weary body and mind. Hop across the (very steady) stone steps partly immersed in a shallow pool to the wooden building beckoning beyond.

As with Café Onion in Anguk, Cheongsudang offers a mix of traditional seating on a low raised platform (shoes off, please) or Western-style long table and chairs. There’s the expected menu of teas, coffees and cakes but one set of items blew me away: the artistic castellas and fromage cakes.

seoulcafe - desserts

It’s like someone went into the garden and carefully cut out a rectangular block of turf and soil. The intricacy and attention to detail of these wondrous bits of creativity really cannot be fully conveyed through photos. Go and seeee!

1-9 Donhwamun-ro 11na-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea +82 2-747-8215 Daily: 11.30am – 10pm Instagram

8. C. Through Café, Itaewon

seoulcafe - storefront

If the creativity of the blocks of soil at Cheongsudang appeal to you, the care and precision that goes into the works of coffee art at C. Through Café will please you no end. Each is crafted before you to your request by master barista Lee Kang Bin.

seoulcafe - cute cakes and coffees

Forget those basic leaf patterns that you admire at your local American coffee chain outlet; these are in a class of their own. There is colour. There is texture. There are pink marshmallow bits masquerading as cherry blossoms.

seoulcafe - cafe interiors

Barista Lee even recreates edible versions of the world’s most famous paintings. The catch is that you can only watch the action on weekends.

A word of caution, though. Make sure you find out exactly how to get there as C. Through Café is located in a maze of alleyways and there is but one shy sign announcing its presence.

9. Coffee Nap Roasters, Yeonnam-dong

seaoulcafe - cafe

My friends, I say again, it’s not just what you drink but where you drink it that flavours your memories. Coffee Nap Roasters is the perfect example of this philosophy. Its combination of abstract design and minimalism has propelled an otherwise not particularly remarkable café to widespread Instagram fame.

At the literal centre of its appeal is a neat sloping mound of red bricks. Sunlight floods in from the huge windows that line the walls, illuminating the structure with direct light as well as photons reflected off the otherwise sterile-white décor.

seoulcafe - coffee

From what I can tell, their rather small bites menu is almost an aside; nothing on the list is permanent and may not be available when you visit. I don’t know why, but that makes me want to go back try my luck again right now.

10. Greem Café, Yeonnam-dong

seoulcafe - black and white cafe

What the…! Walking into Greem Café is like leaving the 3-dimensional world behind and walking into an unfinished comic. It’s surreal, the way that every physical object is white while every edge is marked by thick black ink-like borders to resemble a graphic artist’s work-in-progress. The Korean word greem refers to artwork.

seoulcafe - cafe and drinks and fod

It will come as no surprise, then, that the coffee and light bites seem to be purely an afterthought. The focus is undoubtedly on delivering an experience that shakes your senses out of their reverie into a reality that challenges ‘perspectives’. (See what I did there?)

This is the 2nd edition of Greem Café; they moved out of their original location when their popularity exploded. Among the added features of the new chapter is a rooftop terrace complete with 2D clothesline and hanging laundry.

The ultimate list of the best cafes and the best coffee in Seoul

Best cafes and best coffee in Seoul

Hi! If you don’t know me already, let me tell you I can write and talk about coffee and cafes for hours. And if you are looking for the best cafes in Seoul and/or the best coffee in the city, you have landed on the right page.

That’s because in early 2021 I plunged into Seoul’s coffee scene and maybe the first thing I ever googled about the city was “where can I find the best coffee in Seoul?”. Since the results weren’t satisfying, I decided to try as many places as I can and to write my own comprehensive guide.

As friends might say, I’m a coffee snob, and I have certain types of coffee that I truly enjoy. That being said, Seoul is a bit different when it comes to coffee and cafes, and I’ll explain why.

Dear Bear Cafe Seoul

Cafes and coffee in Seoul : what should you know?

Before we left Hong Kong and moved to Seoul, one of my friends told me I will love it there because they have thousands of cafes.

I had visited during winter some a few years before, but I couldn’t really remember seeing so many cafes. But I guess I was focused on sightseeing and not as much on cafes.

After we moved to Seoul I understood really quickly that there are 3 types of cafes in town:

  • The Instagrammable cafes where you mostly go to for the picture, not so much for the coffee. These are some of the most popular places in town, they show up like mushrooms after the rain and if you try to visit shortly after they are open you might find it challenging even during the week.
  • The chain cafes – a Twosome Place, Ediya Coffee, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Cafe, Pascucci, Angel-in-us Coffee, Hollys Coffee, only to name a few. Here you will find so-and-so coffee, at a more reasonable price, together with cake and other pastries. Most of these places also have larger spaces and free internet so that people can come and hang out. Pretty much like Starbucks.
  • The cafes with single origin coffee where coffee lovers go. These are pretty much my kind of places. Most of them have an interesting interior design, they are not huge cafes, in some places you can even go to work or just to hang out with your friends. But one thing is sure, you go there for the coffee and nothing else! Most places have something sweet, but don’t usually offer cakes or food.

Since you have now been introduced to the 3 types of cafes in Seoul, let me tell you it is sometimes difficult to know where you are going before you get there. Of course, you will always know that if a cafe is popular for its Instagram charm, coffee won’t be the best.

That’s why I have decided to split this post into 2 sections and guide you through the Instagrammable cafes in Seoul but also help you choose the best coffee in Seoul.

The best cafes in Seoul – Instagrammable cafes in Seoul

As mentioned before, these are mostly Instagram-worthy cafes, mainly because of the interior design, but also because the food can be Instagrammable.

At this kind of cafe, you will find food – mainly “westerner” type of food such as pizza, pasta, or some kind of brunch option. Cakes and sweets will always be an option, even though the taste won’t be as you might expect it.

All neighborhoods have their own cafe streets or areas, but there are some places more popular than others such as Yeonnam-dong, Yeonhui, Gangnam, Hongdae, Buamdong, and others.

Cafe Colline in Hongdae

Cafe Colline Seoul

We went there during the hydrangea season because I absolutely love these flowers and this cafe is well-known especially for this: flowers.

As you step inside its garden you feel like in any flower lover’s paradise, and they even change them based on the season and seasonality.

They have a flowers shop as well, and you can go home (or back to your hotel ) with some flowers to make your room joyful.

Food and coffee were not really my favorite, even though I must admit it really looked delicious and Instagrammable. However, everything was sweet even though I got an omelet and some sausage, the french bread had sugar on it and it made everything taste sweet.

The good thing about this place is that it has been around for some time and you won’t have any difficulties in finding a table.

The Royal Food and Drink in Yongsan

The Royal Food and Drink Seoul Yongsan

Another cafe that is not about the coffee but about the area and views. Located in Itaewon, there’s no wonder this place is so popular with expats and tourists.

Getting to the top of the terrace is not a breeze because of the small stairs, but the view will be rewarding enough.

It is also worth knowing that the table you see in all of the pictures is only for that: take your picture and move to a different place inside the cafe.

While we didn’t have coffee there, the food was delicious and they have a few options for vegetarians as well – such a rare thing in South Korea.

Greem Cafe – 연남동 223-14 (Yeonnam 223 Cafe)

Cafe Yeonnam 223 - 연남동 223-14

When I first visited Seoul for 3 days as a tourist on a cold December, this place was high on my list of things to see in the city. It wasn’t easy to find it because the cafe had moved its location and the taxi driver took us to the previous place, since they haven’t updated the address on Instagram.

A few minutes later and after getting a bit lost on the streets of Yeonnam-dong we finally managed to find it.

However, the place had a huge line in front (mostly tourists and foreigners) and we couldn’t get in since we only had limited time on our hands.

Fast forward to one year and a half later, I went during the week just after the place opened and was one of the few customers inside.

The interior of this place is quite unique and interesting – designed to look 2D, and I could easily understand why so many people would wait in line for hours to get inside. However, drinks and food weren’t incredible and you could only take pictures after you bought something.

Happy Bear Day Cafe in Hapjeong

Happy Bear Cafe Seoul

In between Hongik University and Hapjeong Subway Station on a hidden street, we found this very colorful cafe.

Best known for its beautifully decorated cakes, this place attracts color-loving people alike. The whole building is a splash of color, both on the outside and on the inside.

When we went there on a weekday it wasn’t crowded at all, and because it was rather cold outside nobody was standing on the terrace.

The cake was nice, and the coffee was ok, but I think this place can easily be part of the Instagrammable cafes in Seoul.

A new place in town, opened in 2023, offering a stunning view over Han River, and delicious pastry along with good coffee.

“The River” is actually a bigger location that brings together Hey Cafe, a wine bar (NOCT), a live music bar (NOCT M), and a French dining restaurant (Le Da). All with a stunning river view!

If you don’t like your pastry or sweets to be too sweet, go for the lemon croissant, you won’t regret it!

In full honesty, I haven’t been to this place but have passed by it several times. With so many cafes around town, it is hard to try them all.

However, this couldn’t be skipped from any list of the best cafes in Seoul. It has a girly interior and design, plenty of great-looking pastries, and no matter the location, it was always full every time I’ve passed it by.

It is for sure one of the popular cafes both with locals and with tourists alike.

Tucked away on a narrow street in the heart of Myeongdong, this place used to be one of the most popular cafes in Seoul. Every girl traveling to Seoul would end up one way or another in the land of cosmetics, Myeongdong.

That’s why, the location and the design of this pink cafe were a great choice.

Undoutebly, these are some of the most popular cafes in Seoul, and if you have been researching things to do and see, StyleNanda cafe has poped up for sure until now.

It is worth knowing that StyleNanda has 2 different cafes located miles from each other:

The cafe at Ader Error Flagship store in Seongsu

Ader Cafe and terrace Seoul Seongsu

Ok, let’s not talk about the fashion available at this store, because I’m obviously not an expert and the Korean brand is not my cup of tea.

However, a visit to their flagship store in Seongsu should be a must because the interior is amazingly cool. On top of that, on the last floor, they have a pretty cool cafe and a rooftop terrace.

Coffee was surprisingly strong and good, and the interior design is something else. Torn from a Wes Anderson movie, you will have coffee next to colorful beds. Oh, and the lamps have wigs.

Ok, this place! I haven’t said a thing about the cat cafes in Seoul – there are literally tens of them and I’ve been to a few myself.

But this place is a pink cafe, where you get to sit on a bed, sip out of your coffee, and play with pomeranian dogs.

Innisfree Green Cafe Seoul

Innisfree is one of the largest skincare brands in South Korea, and you will find their stores everywhere around town. However, the largest one is their flagship store in Myeongdong, right across the street from Zara.

Apart from the large variety of skincare products and great offers, they also have a cafe on the 2nd level. Inspired by nature, with a clean design and a great atmosphere, they offer mainly sweets, fresh juice and tea, but also coffee.

Because of its central location, the place opens at 9 AM and closes at 11 PM.

Dear Dahlia Cafe Dosan Seoul

On top of the Dear Dahlia Flagship store next to Dosan park in Gangnam, this cafe is pink, girly, and packed with makeup.

I loved the sparkling interior, the cool lipstick panel in the women’s bathroom, but mostly the big window and the tables with a view.

As I was there a few minutes after they opened, I was lucky to get the best table and enjoy the view. I also thought to myself that the ginko tree in front of the window will offer a stunning view during fall in Seoul.

One of the newest Instagrammable cafes in town, the floating Hangang Starbucks is set right on the river that diveds Seoul in 2.

Where to go for the best coffee in Seoul

If you’ve come this far, I’m glad you did it because I’ve saved the best for last.

As I’ve said before, I’m a coffee snob and coming from Hong Kong where the coffee culture is strong, I couldn’t leave Seoul without finding good coffee.

I also know that not everyone is as picky as I am, and it is also a matter of taste, but here are my favorite places with great coffee in Seoul.

The coffee is strong, and you can choose from various types and origins. I always go for the flat white Purple Rain and I also used to get it for home.

The cafe in Yeonnam-dong is my favorite, just make sure to go during the week because it can get really crowded during the weekend, especially after lunch.

seoul must visit cafe

Because of its popularity, you will see the place is hosted in 2 buildings one next to the other. One has a more cozy vibe, while the other has tables on the second floor only.

As you would expect from such a cafe, they don’t serve food, and you can only choose between a few sweets.

seoul must visit cafe

They have another open-space location in the Hyundai Department Store in Yeouido. This place was always crowded when I visited, and almost impossible to find a table. I would take a coffee to go and would drink it by the Han River in the Hangang Park.

Onion Cafe Anguk

seoul must visit cafe

Set in a hanok traditional building, in the heart of the city, we would often take the bus and go here for the atmosphere and the great coffee.

Its interior is minimalistic and you will have to take off your shoes if you want to sit inside, but they also have a few tables outside.

I would always go for the flat white (yes, I almost never take anything else) no matter the season, but they do also the traditional ice coffee Koreans love so much.

Additionally, they have lots of sweets to choose from, and a few savory pastry.

Just make sure to go as early as you can, because this is another popular place where you will find it hard to find a table.

Address : Gyedong-gil 5, Jongno-gu

Opening hours : Mon – Fri 7AM-10PM, Sat & Sun 9AM-10PM

Coffee Nap Roasters in Yeonnam-dong

seoul must visit cafe

A very small coffee place in a unique building on a small corner in between houses in Yeonnam-dong. This place was almost walking distance to our place, so I would go there often because I really enjoyed their coffee.

They are pet friendly, in a quite area, and bake cookies you can smell as you approach. Their chairs aren’t the most comfortable, but the interior is unique and interesting with a small hill made of 7000 bricks.

Address : 453-32 Yeonnam-ro, Yeonnam-dong, Mapo-gu

Opening hours : 9 – 22

Deep Blue Lake Cafe in Mangwon-dong

seoul must visit cafe

In a blue building right next to the Mangwon Market and minutes away from the Mangwon subway station, you will find this great cafe.

People here have a love for coffee and you can even see how they roast their beans as soon as you enter the place. Since it is a popular cafe, sometimes you might have to wait a bit for your coffee, but it will be all worth it!

They have 3 floors where you can sit back and enjoy your coffee.

Address : 9 Poeun-ro 6-gil, Mangwon-dong

Opening hours : 11 – 21:30

Anthracite Coffee Seogyo in Mangwon-dong

seoul must visit cafe

Another great cafe close to the Mangwon subway station, where you can choose from different types of beans.

The building looks like it isn’t finished yet, but its garden is typically Korean – a tranquility oasis.

The big windows let just the right amount of sun in for this place to be one of the coziest in town. Come here after you have eaten, because they only serve sweets and coffee.

How ro find it on Naver : 앤트러사이트 서교점

Address : 서울 마포구 월드컵로12길 11

Opening hours : 9 – 23, only during weekdays

Greyt Coffee next to Seoul Forest

Best cafes and best coffee in Seoul

Coffee here was amazing! And their croffle was delicious as well, one of the best I’ve had in Seoul – and the first one I’ve tried.

Located in a small building, with only a few seating areas, this cafe is not particularly popular among tourists. The lady who served us was clearly not the owner because she wasn’t too joyful, but all in all I really loved this place.

The place is Instagrammable, especially the seat by the round window, and they are well-known for their Vienna coffee – even though I’ve tried the flar white, as always.

Address : 6 Seoulsup 2(i)-gil, Seongdong-gu

Opening hours : 12 – 22 daily

Space Coffee in Yeonhui

seoul must visit cafe

This cafe looks more like a furniture shop, but they do have coffee and they are hidden on a street in Yeonhui.

Even though we went on a weekend day, we didn’t have any problem in finding a table.

Stainpark Cafe in Itaewon

seoul must visit cafe

Join the dolpin at this small cafe tucked away on a small street in Itaewon. Hidden from the eye, this is a place for those who know and love coffee.

With a simple and sleek interior design, I’ve seen people pose in front of this cafe, but I would rather come here for the coffee.

Address : 635, Itaewon-dong, Yongsan-gu

Opening hours : daily from 11 until 22, and from 12 to 20 on Sundays

Coloured Bean in Yeonhui

Another great coffee place in one of my favorite areas to explore, the hip neighborhood of Yeonhui.

Hosted in a corner building, with an inside area and a small patio, this is a tranquil hidden gem.

Another righteous cafe to earn its place on this list, Greem Cafe in Mapo-gu is indubitably a must visit for anyone looking for a unique design of a coffee place. The café has a distinct 2-dimensional design, making it appear as though its interior and decor have been lifted straight out of a cartoon or comic book. Its furniture, walls, floors, and ceilings are all made up with intricate patterns and optical illusions that create a playful and surreal atmosphere, which is pretty hard to exclude when exploring the area.

Cafe 58.4 is one of the prettiest and most unique cafes I’ve ever visited in Seongbuk District in the mid-north part of Seoul. The cafe not only sells an array of fresh fruits, but also provides delicious homemade fruity beverages and desserts. However, none of these are the highlights which you can experience on the cafe’s higher ground: the stunning view of a nearby Hanok village. And this viewing space on the second floor is also set to become even more photogenic in the summer months with plants and flowers decorations, adding a natural and vibrant touch to the already beautiful environment.

While there are many spots to view the picturesque vista of Eunpyeong Hanok Village in Seoul’s northeasternmost district, Eunpyeong-gu, one of the best is undoubtedly from the rooftop of 1 In 1 Jan cafe. Besides the view, the cafe’s design itself is spot on. It is inspired by classic Korean traditional houses, with wooden beams and intricate detailing that add to its charm. The highlight of the interior is undoubtedly the panoramic, curvy windows, which offer stunning pictures of the village and the Bukhan Mountain as a backdrop. The natural light that floods the space creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that’s perfect for snapping photos.

20. Colline

Hangul: 콜린 Drink prices: 5,000KW~7,800KW

Colline is a unique cafe that brings together two seemingly disparate concepts – brunch and flowers – in a harmonious and beautiful way. Located in the heart of the hipster walking street of Hongdae, this cozy cafe offers a carefully curated menu of brunch favorites, with an emphasis on fresh and seasonal ingredients. But what makes Colline stand out from the other cafes in the area is its floral decors and offerings which change with the seasons, so there’s always something new and exciting to discover.

21. Teobangnae

Hangul: 터방내 Drink prices: 2,500KW~5,000KW

If you’re a fan of all things retro and vintage, then you’ll love Teobangnae Cafe in Seoul’s Dongjak District. 14 of the Best Cafes in Seoul, South Korea

I wanted to visit as many of the best cafes in Seoul during my week there, but there are just so many to choose from. South Korea is known for many things but a lot of travellers don’t realise just how big the country’s coffee scene is…

cafes in seoul

In the capital city of Seoul, locals and tourists alike can pick from thousands of different coffee shops, many of which use home-roasted beans.

The city is jam-packed with the best coffee shops South Korea has to offer.

So much so, Seoul is a great place to dip your toe into the wonderful world of specialty coffee, unique beverages, and quirky cafes.

In fact, the coffee scene here has so much to offer, you have no choice but to dive in head first. If you live for the coffee culture, you’ve come to the right place.

In today’s post, I’m going to be showing you the best cafes in Seoul. I’ll show you the cafes you have to visit if you want the best coffee, trendy vibes, and a delicious bite to eat.

Best Coffee Shops in Seoul

These are the Seoul cafes you should make a beeline to…

1. Cafe Layered

The first cafe on this list off the best cafes in Seoul is Cafe Layered. Found in Garosu-gil in Sinsa-Dong, this is a charming cafe that serves some of the best coffee and a huge selection of cakes.

seoul must visit cafe

You can buy a classic South Korean lunch or dinner here, but you have to try the cakes instead.

The cafe makes all its own pastries, cupcakes, and the most amazing cheesecakes. Aside from coffee, this dainty cafe also sells a range of matcha-cream drinks.

Everything about this cafe is great. The interior design is magnificent too, offering a uniquely Japanese style in the heart of South Korea.

2. Ddong Cafe

Ddong Cafe is a Seoul cafe dedicated to… dong. Or poop.

Go inside and you’ll see everything here is poop related, from the cushions, to the serving dishes, to the menu. You’ll find it’s also known as the ‘poop cafe in Seoul’.

cafe in seoul

I didn’t actually sit in here, but instead ordered one of these poo shaped delicacies from the window and walked round the nearby market eating the gooey chocolate from the inside of it. Mmmm, chocolate shaped like poo – appetising!

3. Nolsoop Plus

I loved Nolsoop Plus. I wasn’t getting the best sleeps in my hostel in Seoul unfortunately, so an hour or two here lying in my own personal cabin on the Wi-Fi and in the warm was just what I needed.

It’s actually a book cafe, but such is the modern world that I didn’t get past my phone.

seoul must visit cafe

See, I was tucked up in one of those cosy cabins at the back. Absolutely loved it!

If you’re visiting Korea in autumn , or spending winter in South Korea , the cafes are a great place to get some refuge.

4. Wizard Cafe (Harry Potter cafe!)

Look at this, 7 floors of Harry Potter goodness right there!

The Wizard Cafe in Seoul is awesome. So much to see and do, and they serve wine and cakes, and proper meals too.

seoul must visit cafe

Look at me drinking wine in Ollivanders wand shop – what a dream!

5. Flower Cafe

This was more of a tea shop in Seoul than a coffee shop, with all different flowery teas to choose from. Every floor was decorated with dried flowers, and as I’m sure you can imagine, there were girls everywhere getting their Instagram on.

cafes in seoul

I decided to join them, with a flowery tea of my own, right by a flowery wall – as is the Instagram way.

6. Cafe Onion Anguk

Heralded as one of the best cafes in Seoul, if not the whole of South Korea, Cafe Onion Anguk is one of the best cafes to stop by on your way to Gyeongbokgung Palace.

Situated in Anguk, the cafe has a neat hanbok (traditional Korean house) design.

Resembling a home from the Joseon dynasty, you can expect a traditional roof, open windows, floor seats, and traditional wooden tiles.

If you seek an authentic Korean experience, this is the place to go.

When it comes to food and drink, Cafe Onion has it all. There are fresh cakes and pastries, hot fresh coffee, and traditional Korean dishes.

The avocado pollack roe baguette is particularly popular.

7. Moon Cafe

Another cafe you’ll find near Gyeongbokgung Palace is Moon Cafe. The Moon Cafe features a similar theme to Cafe Onion but offers extra entertainment.

best cafes in seoul

In an attempt to offer a one-of-a-kind experience, this cafe regularly treats customers to traditional Korean music.

To top the experience off, the cafe serves classic Korean desserts and drinks as you sit back and relax.

A fresh cup of coffee, waffles, or an authentic patbingsu should be on your list of things to try.

You’ll leave the cafe feeling refreshed, full, and with memories to last a lifetime.

8. ACOFFEE Seoul

The next Seoul cafe on this list is ACOFFEE Seoul. ACOFFEE Seoul is the sister of the original Melbourne ACOFFEE branch. This is the perfect cafe in Seoul to visit if you simply seek a good coffee.

Featuring a minimalist design, the cafe handpicks the beans from the brand’s headquarters.

As a result, the beans change from one season to the next, offering a different flavour every time you visit.

The coffee is roasted in small batches so that the most can be made of each variety. This results in a super delicious cup of coffee, oozing quality and natural flavours.

9. Cerulean

Located in the creative Insa-Dong, Cerulean is a cafe best known for its eatery, teahouse, gallery, and traditional craft shop. You can pick up some great Korean souvenirs here !

Half of the cafe is taken up by the hanbok-style seating area, whilst the other half consists of a sleek glass structure.

This creates a unique coffee experience that blends the past with the future. This is easily one of the best places in Seoul to enjoy a coffee.

Alongside your fresh coffee, you can enjoy a variety of snacks including home baked cookies.

Cerulean is a cool place to buy quirkier drinks too. The baristas are known for making a wide range of weird and wonderful concoctions that look great and taste even better.

Cafes in Seoul to visit

10. Coffee Nap Roasters

Coffee Nap Roasters is a popular Seoul cafe and coffee shop that can be found in the Yeonnam-dong area. This cafe makes our list for a number of reasons.

First of all, Coffee Nap Roasters sell a variety of impressive monster-sized cakes and pastries. Secondly, the cafe uses its own brand of coffee to make your drink.

Finally, Coffee Nap Roasters has one of the quirkiest interior designs you’ll ever see.

The cafe was built around a mound that was covered in brick. Therefore, the floor in the cafe rises higher and higher the further in you get. This creates an utterly bonkers design.

11. Cong Caphe

It’s also possible to experience a Vietnamese-style cafe during a trip to South Korea.

Cong Caphe offers the best experience. Cong Caphe is a popular cafe franchise that has coffee shops across Vietnam.

The franchise has now started opening cafes in Seoul too.

To date, there are a handful of Cong Caphe’s in Seoul, so make sure you pay one of them a visit.

Inside a Cong Caphe, you’ll find a simple, yet sophisticated interior, Vietnamese food, and classic Vietnamese drinks.

One of the most popular drinks to try is ca phe cot dua, which is a frozen coconut drink that many would argue is a dessert.

12. Ongozisin

Ongozisin is regarded by many as the best cafe in Seoul. Famous for its scenic views and awesome coffee, this is a must-visit cafe during your trip to Seoul.

Aside from selling what is arguably the best coffee in Seoul, Ongozisin has the best views of the Gwanak District.

Therefore, if you want to kick back and relax, enjoy a fresh coffee, and take in some of the city’s best views, you need to visit.

That’s not all this cafe has to offer either.

The cafe also has a wonderful menu that features interesting snacks and lunches. Two foods you have to try are the monggo buns and the paprika ice cream.

13. The Royal Food And Drink

The penultimate Seoul cafe on this list is the Royal Food and Drink. The Royal Food and Drink is widely believed to be the best coffee shop in the city for brunch.

The cafe offers a staggering range of hearty dishes that will fill your belly and satisfy your soul.

While you enjoy a fresh sandwich, salad, or bagel, you’ll also be treated to impressive views of the city.

In fact, the cafe actually has a scenic rooftop view that offers unparalleled views of Namsan Tower.

14. Dorrell Coffee 6z4

The final Seoul cafe I have for you is Dorrell Coffee 6z4. This specialty coffee shop fuses high-quality coffee with skateboarding culture.

The concrete ramps and deck-shaped seating areas are designed to remind visitors of the cafe’s inspiration.

The coffee menu is just as unique as the cafe’s interior. You’ll find a range of quirky drinks and unique coffees.

One coffee you might like to try is the “Nutty Cloud” which is an espresso-like drink made using peanut cream and cold milk.

Best cafes in Seoul

Seoul is blessed with thousands of epic cafes and coffee shops that offer locals and tourists the chance to enjoy a fresh drink, delicious food, and something new.

While it’s impossible to list all the cafes in Seoul, I’ve listed the ones generally considered to be the best.

Now you have this list at your fingertips, you should be able to find somewhere great to grab a coffee and a bite to eat. 9. Starbucks Seoul Wave

Starbucks Seoul Wave | ©EatingOutorIn

Starbucks actually have some quite incredible locations across Asia. This one within the Seoul Wave Arts Centre, a floating three story exhibition venue, has to be one of the best. With stunning views of the Han River, this is not your average high street Starbucks.

10. Flipper's Ikseon

Flippers | ©EatingOutorIn

For the tastiest desserts in Seoul it has to be Flipper’s in Ikseon-Dong. They have the fluffiest Japanese style pancakes. Not only are they beautiful with their mixed fruit or chocolate toppings, but also mouth-wateringly tasty.

11. Knotted

Knotted | ©EatingOutorIn

The best café in Seoul for delicious doughnuts, that I know of, is Knotted. Their signature cream filled doughnut is something really special. Super soft dough and oozing with cream. Attractive building in Hongdae with an outdoor terrace on the second floor.

12. 한옥랑솜 익선

한옥랑솜 익선 | ©EatingOutorIn

One of the other cafe’s amongst the small alleyways of Ikseon-Dong is called ‘한옥랑솜 익선’. If it has an English spelling, I haven’t been able to find it.  However, it has a beautiful entrance, with stepping stones leading from a wooden doorway. It’s an attractive space. Plus, the cakes and coffees are excellent.

22 of the Most Brewtiful Cafes in Seoul & Nearby

Green Mile Coffee, cafes in Seoul, Korea

Want to dip your toe into the wonderful world of trendy and unique cafes in Seoul? Considering I both live for cafe culture and Seoul is one of my favorite major cities in the world, I like to think I’ve compiled a pretty good list of recommendations!

In the original version of this post, I said I’d never encountered a country with such an incredible cafe scene. I do have to say Vietnam gives Korea a run for its money, but both countries take their coffee shops very, very seriously.

When it comes to Seoul, Portland hipsters  wish.  I mean, even Korea’s budget, franchise options are fun! You can find a Paris Baguette in even the most rural of destinations, not to mention Tous le Jours, the “fancier” Paris Croissant, Cafe Benne, Ediya… I really should do a whole separate post on Korean franchise coffee shops because they are extensive.

Of course, Seoul, which sits at the very center of Korean culture, is the ultimate mecca for coffee addicts and Instagrammers alike. I’ve visited this city more times than I can count, and on every trip I’ve visited at least one cafe. Below are some of my absolute favorite cafes in Seoul!

Quick Seoul Guide

  • Stay: To be near trendy cafes, your best bet is to stay in Hongdae . Top hotels include RYSE and L7 Hongdae by Lotte and more affordable stays include Cocoa Guesthouse and Hotel Baroato .
  • Getting in: Don’t spend a ton of money on getting a taxi into Seoul. Just use the subway which is super nice and easy to use from all of the airports, train stations, and bus terminals. If you do need a private transfer, just book ahead .
  • Stay in Touch: Korea has the best thing ever – eSIMs! No need to worry about losing your physical SIM card anymore. Just buy here and you’ll be emailed a QR code which will set you up!
  • Where to Book Activities: I always like checking Klook or Trazy for the best deals on anything related to tours and day trips in Seoul.
  • Getting Around: When it comes to Seoul, you’ll most likely do a combination of subway and walking (so much walking). Under each cafe I have a little bit on how to get there.
  • Absolute Needs: Good walking shoes; there’s so much more walking in Seoul than you’d think. I like Birkenstocks or just a cute pair of white sneakers ! Also if you also don’t respond well to dairy, make sure to bring with or stop by a pharmacy (약) for lactaid pills . A lot of the smaller cafes won’t have milk alternatives.

Some Updates on Cafes in Seoul

So if you’ve found this post before April 2022, boy, do I have some big updates for you! Seoul is always changing even in normal times, so there’s a lot of new things to be aware of.

1. Many cafes offer milk alternatives now

Not all but now when I go to a cafe, I can ask for soy, oat, or sometimes almond milk and… they might actually say yes. You have no idea what a revelation this is! It used to only be Starbucks that didn’t look at you like you were crazy, and even then they only offered soy milk.

2. A lot of cafes did not survive the big C

Going through this list, I discovered a lot of cafes that simply no longer exist anymore. When I clicked through to KakaoMap, I kept getting an error. If you’re wondering about specific ones you’ve seen here, I have a little RIP Cafe list down below.

3. I took out the quirky cafes

Again, editing this list I realized how many cafes I put in that weren’t particularly trendy . I’d say they’re more on the quirky side (i.e. the poop cafe), but they’re more something a tourist would visit for fun, not really a cafe you’d find local Seoulites frequenting or starring on their KakaoMap app. I’ll also note them below just so you know you were hallucinating when you originally saw them on this list.

Trendy Cafes in Seoul

Now for my favorite trendy cafes in Seoul! I’ve listed them alphabetically so they’re easy to find. Below each description is also a link to KakaoMap (which is what you should use instead of Google Maps for accurate navigation) and a link to their Instagram if it exists. If you’re like me and my friends, we save things in Instagram and star spots on KakaoMaps to remember them for later.

seoul must visit cafe

1. Boulanger Maison Bukak (블랑졔메종북악)

Area: Seongbuk-dong (성북동)

My friend, Hallie , and I stopped here after we went up to the Bugak Skyway. It’s such a charming spot that’s quite tucked away. I mean the rustic bread decor alone… Instead of a typical tray to put all your desserts on, you can use cute baskets! This is also one of the few cafes on this list that has normal food instead of just sweets.

How to Get There:

  • KakaoMap Location
  • Quick Directions: Closest subway stop is Hansung University Station (한성대입구역) on Line 4. From Exit 5, it’s a 1.6km or 25 minute walk. You can also take Bus 1111 or 2112 to the Oriental University of Culture Stop (동방문화대학원대학교)

Cafe Layered, Yeonnamdong, Seoul, Korea

2. Cafe Layered (레이어드)

Area: Yeonnam-dong || Instagram: @cafe_layered

Located in a pretty brick building in the every trendy Yeonnam-dong (연남동), Cafe Layered is pretty much everything sweet and girly! I stopped in quickly with my friend, Angie , on my way to the metro and was delighted by all the wonderfully fancy desserts! I picked up a salted caramel scone, which was delicious.

  • Quick Directions: The closest subway station is Hongdae Station (홍대입구역). Exit 3 is the closest exit, and then you have about a 15 minute walk along the park. (The park is called Gyeongui Line Forest Park, but its nickname is Yeontral Park, like Central Park lol).

Cheongsudang Gallery, Sinsadong, Seoul, Korea

3. Cheongsudang Gallery (청수당 – 갤러리)

Area: Garuso-gil in Sinsa-dong || Instagram: @cheongsudang_gallery

My friend, Raquel , introduced me to this cafe! We went here after getting cheesesteaks in Garosu-gil. They have some really cool drinks, including this matcha cream drink we both got. The best thing about this cafe, though, is the very cool design. I don’t really know how to describe it! It feels like it’s got a bit of Japanese nature inspiration with some cool, earthy interior decor that incorporates elements like sand and rock.

  • Quick Directions: You can get to Cheongsudang from either Apgujeong Station (압구정역) or Sinsa Station (신사역), and I’d say they’re about equidistant.

Coffee Nap Roasters | Cafes in Seoul

4. Coffee Nap Roasters (커피냅로스터스)

Area: Yeonnam-dong // Instagram: @coffeenap_roasters

Fun fact, I think this is actually where I first met Hallie! She sent me this spot to meet because the design was pretty intriguing. Basically it’s a cafe built around a mound that as then covered with brick. Very random but very funky.

  • Quick Directions: The closest subway stop for Coffee Nap Roasters is Gajwa Station (가좌역). You’ll want to leave from Exit 1 and walk for about 10 minutes. Bus-wise, the Gyeongui Line Forest Park Entrance (경의선숲길공원입구) stop is even closer.

Cong Caphe, Yeonnam-dong, Seoul

5. Cong Caphe (콩카페)

Area: Yeonnam-dong // Instagram: @congcaphe_kr

I had add Cong Caphe! If you traveled or lived in Vietnam , you know Cong Caphe is a mini-franchise there, so this isn’t anything particularly special. However, if you’ve never been or have experienced a long absence from the country, you’ll be as delighted as I was when I saw those familiar army green colors. This is where I was introduced to the beautifully delicious cà phê cốt dừ a , a frozen coconut coffee drink that is more dessert than coffee!

Plus, all Cong Caphes have a cool design, and the one in Seoul is no exception. They basically have all these Vietnamese-inspired military decor and each cafe is different from the other. Definitely grab a table outside for the full effect.

  • Quick Directions: Cong Caphe is quite buried in Yeonnam-dong, so either Hongdae Station (홍대입구역) or Gajwa Station (가좌역) will still put you almost 20 minutes away on foot. If you can, try to get a bus to Eden Jiwoo Apartment (에덴지우아파트) stop to be only a few minutes away.

6. Dore Dore (도레도레)

Area : Sinsa-dong // Instagram: @doredoreofficial

Home to the rainbow cake! It has a few locations, including the airport now, but my favorite is the one in Sinsa-dong that looks like it belongs in an episode of “Saved by the Bell.” At various points I’ve been able to share a slice between four people happily and gobble up one on my own…

  • Quick Directions: Either Apgujeong Station (압구정역) or Sinsa Station (신사역) should work and be about a 10-12 minute walk. And if you do miss going to this one, you can literally go to the bottom level of the airport and try it before you check in!

7. GrainSEOUL (그레인 서울)

Area: Yeonnam-dong // Instagram: @grain_seoul

Angie took me to their old location a while ago and I always remembered it for the good food and cute setting! You basically create your own tray and pick from a nice selection of breakfast and brunch options. This is a good spot if you want something with substances and not just sweet treats. I even requested we meet up at their new location on my most recent trip because I remember loving it so much!

  • Quick Directions: If you use Hongdae Station (홍대입구역) and come out Exit 2 or 4, it should be about a 25-minute walk over. You could also use Gajwa Station (가좌역), but it’s like a 20-minute still.

seoul must visit cafe

8. Greem Cafe (그림카페)

Area: Yeonnam-dong (연남동) / Instagram: @greem_cafe

I swear photos of this cafe were everywhere in 2019! The design is meant to look 2D, which gives it quite a quirky vibe, and I really liked how creative they got with our drinks. If you’re confused – this cafe took a few years to figure out its permanent name and location (and it looks like it’s expanded to other places around Korea). The current iteration is Greem Cafe (which is a weird Anglicization of “그림”, Korean for picture. Really should’ve just gone with the 2D Cafe or Picture Cafe, because “Greem” sounds funky!). It’s still in Yeonnam-dong and from Instagram has similar interiors as when I went.

  • Quick Directions: It’s quite close to Cong Caphe from earlier on this list, so you’ll want to take either Hongdae Station (홍대입구역) or Gajwa Station (가좌역). This will still put you almost 20 minutes away on foot. If you can, try to get a bus to Eden Jiwoo Apartment (에덴지우아파트) which only be a few minutes on foot.

Green Mile Coffee, cafes in Seoul, Korea

9. Green Mile Coffee (그린마일커피 북촌점)

Area: Bukchon Hanok Village // Instagram: @green_mile_coffee

Green Mile Coffee is very pretty looking cafe in one of the loveliest areas of Seoul – Bukchon Hanok Village. The real selling point is its rooftop which gives you a nice view of the tiled hanok roofs and even out to Namsan Tower on a clear day. I also really liked the drink, and the interior has some warm, traditional elements that make it a pretty cafe to visit even if you don’t make it up to the roof.

  • Quick Directions: If you take Anguk Station (안국역) and leave through Exit 3, it should be a straight shot up Bukchon-ro for about 10 minutes.

seoul must visit cafe

10. Midlevel (미드레벨)

Area: near Seoul National University // Instagram: @cafe_midlevel

Only go here if you’ve got a giant sweet tooth! It’s supposed to be a Hong Kong dessert cafe, so we got these cream-filled waffles to share as well as some milk tea.  Not my first pick for dessert in Seoul but I enjoyed the sugary treats I got. There are some cool neon signs on the outside which is a fun photo op!

  • Quick Directions: Your best bet is to use Seoul National University Station (서울대입구역), leave through Exit 1 or 2 and walk about 8-10 minutes.

seoul must visit cafe

11. Nakrangpara (낙랑파라)

Area: Near Hongdae Station (홍대입구역 ) // Instagram: @nrparlour

Angie took me here after we ate at Grain to do a little work. It’s so nice and cozy, and she said she used to come here often to study for her exams. They also have some vintage things for sale while you wait for your coffee!

  • Quick Directions: If you leave Hongdae Station (홍대입구역) from Exit 2 or Exit 4, it should be less than a 10 minute walk.

seoul must visit cafe

12. Ongozisin (온고지신)

Area: Near Seoul National University // Instagram: @ongozisin

So Papago tells me the name of this cafe comes from a verb, “온고신하다” which basically means looking to the past as a guide for the future. I’m pretty sure there’s some sort of Japanese influence as well.

The cafe has a more rustic feel and when we went one of the baristas spokke English! Of course, the main feature is this big, circular window. We got some milk teas here if memory serves and is just a nice vibe all around. It does fill up on the weekend, just a warning.

  • Quick Directions: It’s along the same street as Midlevel Cafe, so you’ll want to use Seoul National University Station (서울대입구역), leave through Exit 1 or 2. Then it’s a 8-10 minute walk.

seoul must visit cafe

13. Perception (퍼셉션)

Neighborhood: Hapjeong-dong (합정동) // Instagram: @perception.coffee

Hallie sent me this fun cafe to meet her at when I landed in Seoul one visit. I literally got off my plane, soaked in a sauna, and ditched my suitcase in a subway locker before headed over! This cafe is just a super, quiet space tucked away in Hapjeong where we got to catch up. The ceiling is the main focal point of design!

  • Quick Directions: The closest subway stop is Sangsu Station (상수역). Use Exit 4, and it should be less than a 10-minute walk.

On KakaoMap // Instagram

Project Seoul Cafe, Seoul, Korea

14. Project Seoul ( 프로젝트서울)

Area:  right near Seoul National University // Instagram: @projectseoul

What a funky a little cafe! Hallie took my friend and I here, and when we first walked in, it was like stepping into an Instagram Twilight Zone. There was a rose wall, a bed, trendy seating, a giant pink unicorn… I could have easily shared like ten more photos from the different angles! I recommend the rose lemonade.

  • Quick Directions: Get off at Seoul National University Station (서울대입구역) and leave through Exits 1 or 2, and it should only be bout a 5 minute walk and on the 4th floor of the building.

Space Shinseon Cafe, Seoul, Korea

15. Space Shinseon (스페이스신선)

Area:  Hannam-dong near Itaewon (한남동) // Instagram: @spaceshinseon

So Space Shinseon is also kind of a mini museum or art gallery with a cafe on the first floor. It has such a nice, clean design with interesting sculptures, including the spiral staircase with doves. Hallie, Angie, and I relaxed here after we walked around the museum.

  • Quick Directions: Use Hangangjin Station (한강진역), Exit 3 and it’ll be about 6 minutes. You can’t miss the exterior!

16. Stylenanda Pink Hotel Cafe (핑크호텔) & Pink Pool Cafe (홍대플래그쉽스토어)

Areas:  Hongdae and Myeongdong // Instagram: @pinkpoolcafe

I wrote about both cafes here , but I’ll say it again — there are two locations and when I was researching them they just kept coming up as  one place. However, one is more of a hotel theme and the other is a restaurant/pool theme! The hotel one is in Myeongdong, and it’s also the one with the rooftop area. The Hongdae one is the one with the mini pool (that you don’t swim in) and the pink restaurant vibe that looks like that famous London cafe. I would say if you could only choose one, the Hongdae location is better!

Thanks Oat, Seoul, Korea

17. Thanks, Oat (땡스오트)

Area: Yeonnam-dong (연남동) // Instagram : @thanksoat

What a cute little place in Yeonnam-dong! Hallie wanted to go here, and I can see why. It has delicious yogurt bowls and just has this countryside feel once you step inside. It even  smells delicious in there. Great cafe if you want some healthier food options.

  • Quick Directions: Thanks, Oat is in the same area as Coffee Nap Roasters, so the closest subway is Gajwa Station (가좌역). You’ll want to leave from Exit 1 and walk for about 10 minutes. Bus-wise, the Gyeongui Line Forest Park Entrance (경의선숲길공원입구) stop is even closer.

Ver's Garden, Yeonnam-dong, Seoul

18. Ver’s Garden (벌스 가든)

Area: Yeonnam-dong (연남동) // Instagram: @vers_garden

Ver’s Garden has to be one of the prettiest cafes in Seoul! It’s decorated with tons of dried flowers and plants and overall just a nice, relaxed vibe. Actually, if you live here, this is a great spot to buy your houseplants! My friend, Angie, told me about this cafe years ago since she used to live nearby, and I’ve been wanting to go ever since. I managed a few hours working with her here. The coffee is delicious and the vibe is very relaxing – hard to believe just a kilometer way is the busier part of Hongdae!

  • Quick Directions: Ver’s Garden is also in the same area as Thanks, Oat and Coffee Nap Roasters. You can use Gajwa Station (가좌역) and leave via Exit 1 if you want walk for about 10 minutes. Bus-wise, the Gyeongui Line Forest Park Entrance (경의선숲길공원입구) stop is even closer.

Cool Cafes Near Seoul

Akira Coffee, Incheon, Korea

19. Akira Coffee (카페아키라) in Incheon

Area: Incheon, close to Chinatown & Incheon Station // Instagram: @akira__coffee

Akira has a few locations but the one we went to is right near Incheon Station and Chinatown. It’s a Japanese-inspired cafe with very relaxing vibes, a nice rooftop, and the CUTEST dog. Just a warning – kids are not allowed inside but they’re okay outside and on the roof.

  • Quick Directions: Once you exit Incheon Station (인천역), it’ll be about a 7-minute walk.

Gardenus, Paju, Korea

20. Gardenus Cafe (가드너스) in Paju

As part of Paju’s Hyeri Art Village , Gardenus is a super cool, spacious cafe! My friend, Jamie, drove us here to meet Hallie and Angie, and we parked nearby, but I added public transport options below. The cafe has a cool, concrete design and really feels like it goes on and on! I remember getting one of their macarons with a coffee, and then we all just hung out on one of the blue or yellow seats.

  • Quick Directions: So, the easiest way to get to Hyeri Art Village besides driving is get a bus from near Hapjeong Station. Right outside Exit 1 is the Hapjeong Station Bus Stop (합정역 정류장). Look for Bus #2200 and ride it to Hyeri Gate 4 Bus Stop (헤이리4번게이트 정류장). From there it’s about a 4-minute walk to Gardenus.

Real Factory 1988, Paju, Korea

21. Real Factory 1998 (실공장1998) in Paju

This is such a random cafe in such a random spot in Paju! The entire theme is yarn (so much so that I honestly just figured out its real name as I was writing this post). You’ll see SO much in the way of yarn decor, it’s really a fun way to hang out for an afternoon.

  • Quick Directions: This one’s a bit trickier as it’s not really with anything else and is outside of Hyeri Art Village. Super easy if you have a car, but if not your best bet is to find a bus to take you the Church Apartment Bus Stop (교회앞). That or just grab a taxi over.

22. Dreamy Camera Cafe (꿈꾸는사진기) in Yongmun-myeon

Area:  Yongmun-myeon (용문면) // Instagram: @dreay_camera_cafe

Ok, so this isn’t  in Seoul, but you can visit easily through the subway and a taxi ride. And it’s just so lovely and charming, I highly recommend visiting! I wrote a post about the cafe here if you want more information.

  • Quick Directions: The closest station is Yongmun Station (용문역); from there you can get a taxi! If you click that KakaoMap link, you can see just how remote the cafe is.

Cafes in Seoul I Still Want to Visit

ShikmulgwanPH (식물관PH)

Another one I saw on   Hallie’s IG , and another IG I started following, @wi_cloud . I tried translating the Korean and it came out as either “Botanical Tube PH” or “Botanical Coffin PH,” so…. I might need to work on my Korean skills more. But it looks like a pretty botanical-themed cafe!

There’s honestly SO much more; I have a saved folder on Instagram solely dedicated to cafes in Seoul! I’ll have to update this section more when I sit down and go through them.

Cafes No Longer On this List

No longer open:.

  • Seoulism – I wrote a whole post about them; they’ve closed as a cafe but should be open as a bar now.
  • Banana Tree
  • Kyul by Bean Brothers
  • Understated Coffee

Random Ones I Took Off:

  • 943 Kings Cross

And there’s my list of trendy cafes in Seoul… for now! I know this is a small, small number in the grand scheme of cafes, so please let me know if you know of any cool places I need to add for my next visit!

Hello Samantha!!!!!!!!

I am Olga, from Spain. I know you wrote this article many time ago, but I am so thankfull for it because it helps me a lot with my investigation of the sweetest places in Seoul.

I am thinking to go alone, so I think my first question is… Do you think is it safe, travelling alone to Corea being a woman? I am thinking to move around, going to Daegu, Gyeongju, Busan, Jeju an, finally, Seoul.

And my next question is about the article… It is able to pay by card in most of the places, even if you only take a coffee or by cash is most often?

And this places have the option of “take away” or only “eatting in”? I know the better thing is to eat in and enjoy the atmosphere of the place…. but I have many places, I want to see them all and try the typical things, but some times is going to be impossible because, for example, when I am in Yeonnam-Dong I have kind of 5 places to go… I can do that, but maybe I can not eat in all of them… Can I buy the things to take away and them eat them during the day or at the hotel?

You should be totally fine traveling alone in Korea; I’d say it’s one of, if not THE safest country I’ve ever been to. Obviously, use normal precautions but I’ve honestly never felt unsafe or uncomfortable, and I’ve often gone places on my own at all times of day.

It’s definitely possible to pay by card. I’d say all of these places are card-friendly. Off the top of my head the only places in Korea that might not be are really lowkey mom and pop shops where you pay like 5,000 KRW to get some dumplings. I also don’t know how the subway is these days but last I visited, I had to use cash at the subway machines and to top up my subway/bus card.

As far as I’ve experienced every cafe has take away options; just let them know when you order with “Take out” or (테이크아웃). If they don’t understand you, say it with a Korean pronunciation – tay-keh ah-oot) or if they really don’t understand you, show them that bit of hangul or say “ka-da” which is “to go”.

Thanks for all the information and the TIP´s Samantha. I really appreciate it

Hi, I just wanted to let you know I wanted to go to Café Orbit today but there was a sign saying „The café is gone“ (in English even). :( Too bad! The hotel is still there, though.

Oh no!! What a bummer :( It must’ve been recent too. Thanks for letting me know!

Hello Samantha,

I love your write up.

I’m actually traveling to Seoul next month and I have been indecisive on where I should stay. Either Gangnam or Hongdae at the L7 hotel chain.

I live in the heart of Los Angeles, specifically in Koreatown.

Where would you honestly suggest for someone who’s in their late 30’s but looks mid-20’s? Enjoys the city, fashion and living life to its fullest?

My friend suggested I stay where I’m “comfortable” which I interpreted being comfortable while Black lol but she meant being comfortable without being “on” all the time.

Also, what are the distances typical in terms of time that it would take to transport to Gangnam, Itaewon and Hongdae by taxi?

Humble Regards,

Hi Amber! Luckily Seoul is absurdly easy to navigate via its subway so ultimately it doesn’t matter where you stay :) As it’s also a major city, you’ll be a bit more comfortable as a foreigner here especially in the main tourist areas!

I wrote a post on where to stay in Seoul here which has more of a breakdown (need to update it though!): https://thereshegoesagain.org/where-to-stay-in-seoul-neighborhoods/

Based on what you want to do, I’d say Hongdae, Insadong, or Myeongdong are your best bets!

Hongdae – kind of the university area which means it’s got a lot of cool, trendy spots, good eateries, and fun shopping (though warning if you’re over a size 2 shopping in Korea is… limited). Also it’s closest to the airport (still an hour away), so I like to stay in this district either right when I come or leave Korea. ( https://thereshegoesagain.org/hotels-in-hongdae/ ) Hotel wise – RYSE or L7

Insadong – the “traditional” part of Korea near the palaces. Very cool if you want to be more near the cultural stuff! Personally one of my favorite areas. ( https://thereshegoesagain.org/hotels-in-insandong/ ) Hotel wise – I’d look into one of the hanok ones.

Myeongdong – this is the shopping area and also very trendy. It’s also the most central of the shopping districts while still having good food options and things to do. I’d say this is my pick and where we were going to base our 3 day Seoul extension on our Korea tour. ( https://thereshegoesagain.org/best-hotels-in-myeongdong/ ) Hotel wise, we booked Hotel28 for our tour!

I would recommend against staying in Gangnam or Itaewon. I’d only recommend Gangnam if you’re in on business or getting plastic surgery lol. It’s not very central and only has a few things worth seeing! Itaewon is known as the foreigner district. It’s fine but also not particularly central and feels the least like Korea or Seoul.

Transport wise — I’m always a fan of the subway. It’s clean, fast, cheap, and easy. Like better than the taxis; I even take it when I’m coming in from the airport! If you do need taxis, get the KakaoTaxi app, it’ll be better for getting a taxi when you need it. Also I don’t know how things are and haven’t experienced first hand since I’m East Asian, but I do know friends (anyone non-East Asian) have one or two instances where the taxis ignore them or stop and leave when they realize they’re foreign.

Hope that helps!!

This article was amazing! I really loved all the pictures included as well :) thanks for your help!

Of course! Enjoy :)!!

Hi Samantha

Thank you so much for this great article. I spend a lot of time searching and surfing the web to find some of Seoul’s cafes. and finally, you save me at the last minute thank you for the help.

Aw thanks Flora! Glad you found it helpful :)

25 Unique Themed Cafes In Seoul, South Korea

Seoul cafes composite image

Enjoying a great meal is only part of dining out, the ambiance, social aspect, and service play a big role as well. Dining at a Michelin-star restaurant is like a fanciful getaway from reality. Just as easily, a small-town staple can teleport you to a bygone era. Whether humble mom-and-pop eateries or nationwide franchises, the right setting can make dining out a delicious escape. That's especially true of South Korea's themed cafe culture. Immersive and experientially unique, cafes there have evolved to become much more than places to grab a quick cup of joe. They are aesthetic playgrounds for locals and tourists alike.

Suppose you enjoy getting your caffeine fix while in the company of live animals, Korea has it. If you have a concerning Hello Kitty obsession, fret not, there's a themed cafe for you. There are countless imaginative and Instagram-worthy cafes to experience in South Korea, and here are a few that we recommend.

Cafe Layered (scone-themed)

Whether you're already an authority on  tips for making the best scones or a novice when it comes to the pastries, Cafe Layered should definitely be on your bucket list. Inspired by European bakeries, the inside feels like a boulangerie. The interior is mostly white with an eye-catching display of doughy options as the only pops of color. Offering delectable sweet and savory scones, satisfy your pastry cravings with cinnamon pecan, jambon beurre (or bacon and butter) scone sammies, and more. After your fill of scones, try one of Cafe Layered's several cake options, which range from red velvet to cheesecake. The menu also features coffee, tea, and juices and there are several locations throughout Seoul.

Soha Salt Pond (salt-themed)

Soha Salt Pond is like being transported back in time to the height of Seoul's Hanok-era architecture, the country's traditional style of home. A beautiful salt pond is the centerpiece of this themed cafe and it's surrounded by an equally amazing space filled with a wide array of salt-infused pastry options. Under warm lighting, choose between an assortment of croissants, savory and sweet buns, and of course, hot coffee. Soha Salt Pond's signature salt coffee, served with a chunky salted rim, is one of the menu's most popular. Bread is baked on the spot, so as a result of its popularity, the queue time requires a bit of patience.

21-5, Supyo-ro 28-gil, Jongno District, central Seoul, South Korea

Viva Salon (toy-themed)

Reignite your inner child at the toy-themed Viva Salon. Colorfully youthful, it's covered wall-to-wall with classic cartoon characters, memorabilia, and unique branded products. Viva Salon's toy selection is a veritable child's dream. You can enjoy a cup of cartoon-themed beverages flanked by Sesame Street, Peanuts, famous Disney characters, stuffed animals, and more. There are also fun Winnie The Pooh and Wallace & Gromit-themed coffees that are so cute, you'll want to just take pictures of it. The menu is filled with many amusing beverages. Along with the cafe's colorful drink offerings, customers can purchase toys to take home as well.

84 Poeun-ro, Mangwon-dong, Seoul, South Korea

Cafe Munei (cake sandwich-themed)

One of the cleverest themed cafes in South Korea, Cafe Munei is known for making a savory sandwich that resembles a cake. Rather than icing, the "cake" is covered in a layer of whipped cream, donning decorations that further suspend disbelief. Hidden beneath the sweet and creamy exterior is a two-tier sandwich that requires a fork and knife to enjoy. Cafe Munei masterfully marries the sugar with the salt to give you a wholly unique experience. Along with the cake sandwich, the menu features an assortment of desserts and beverages to enjoy. Projections of beach scenery cover the walls of Cafe Munei's minimalist setting, leaving the pastries as the centerpiece.

Cafe Teteum (teddy bear-themed)

For those who aren't into toys so much as they are into cuddly-soft teddy bears, Cafe Teteum is the South Korean destination for you. Opened in 2022, entering this themed cafe is like unlocking a teddy bear-topia. From its caffeinated selection of beverages and wall-lined artwork to its cute merchandise and table coasters, Cafe Teteum is a growling good time. The location consists of two floors and along with bear-inspired beverages and merch, it also sells tasty food. After you've got your filling of edible goods, take advantage of any number of selfie-ready spots throughout the cafe.

15 Donggyo-ro 36-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea

The Amoene Cafe (upside down house-themed)

One themed cafe that's sure to turn your frown upside down is The Amoene Cafe. It takes immersion to a surreal place and gives you an experience that goes beyond mere interior decoration. The building is a topsy-turvy structure that looks more like an art installation than a cafe. As soon as you walk through the heart-shaped entrance, you find windows askew and ceilings on the ground floor. Inside is spacious and perfect for meeting up with friends. You can hang out for a bit, study, take selfies, or simply stop by to discover  why Americanos are so popular in South Korea .

Aquagarden Cafe and Aquarium (aquarium-themed)

Enjoy a latte in the company of fish at Aquagarden Cafe and Aquarium. As the name implies, it's a themed cafe that allows guests to submerge themselves in an underwater world, figuratively speaking of course. Aquariums are the main attraction here and this place has lots of them. A colorful dance of swimming fish is a pretty sight to see. The watery worlds at Aquagarden aren't any ordinary fish bowls either, they are massive and teeming with life. A large tree extends from an aquarium located in one corner of the cafe, lush with greenery. If the fish don't hypnotize you, make sure to order something too.

Songpa-gu, Olympic-ro, 300 (Lotte World Mall), Seoul, South Korea

Nuldam Space (letter to the future-themed)

While many themed cafes focus on evoking excitement, pop culture, and art, Nuldam Space offers a more endearing experience. In place of a colorful selfie-ready aesthetic, customers are invited to write a letter to their future selves and have it mailed back to them by the cafe at a later date. It's a genius idea, the walls in Nuldam Space are lined with cubby holes; one for each day of the year. You can pen the letter over a cup of joe and secure it with an old-world wax seal. Little touches like that add even more value to the experience. Nuldam is vegan-friendly and has three locations throughout South Korea.

24 Samcheong-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Cheong su Dang (bamboo forest-themed)

In today's bustling world, it's important to take time to slow down. Cheong su Dang is another Hanok-style cafe that promotes the value of slowness. Relaxing and made for group seating, the traditional setting is juxtaposed by young patrons who come to hang, study, or stand anxiously in line for one of the signature cakes, Castella and Fromage. The presentation of the desserts is stunning and looks closer to prop food. Wherever you sit, nature is nearby. For example, an inviting bamboo forest greets you at the entrance. Although it seats 85 patrons, Cheong su Dang is known to attract a long line so be prepared for a wait.

31-9 Donhwamun-ro 11na-gil, Ikseon-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Rain Report (rain-themed)

A newer themed cafe on the scene has found a way to recreate the calming experience of a rainy day. Aptly-titled Rain Report Cafe, it literally rains inside, yet thankfully, no raincoat is required. Sip premium coffee to the sound of relaxing droplets, the menu has a wide selection that also includes cocktails, ice cream, and pastries. Joining the various water installations are HD screens that display continuous rainfall. Outside of the cafe, the rain continues, falling into a pond with stepping stones that you can traverse. It's definitely the place to go for those who prefer a quieter setting, of course, if you don't mind getting wet.

258-63 Itaewon-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Nudake Haus Dosan (abstract dessert-themed)

The pastries at this elegantly minimalist cafe are the definition of creative. Nudake Cafe is located in the multi-level store Nudake Haus Dosan, one of several experiential retail locations owned by designer eyewear brand Gentle Monster. Stores often feature unique art installations that create an immersive feel for customers. The Seongsu location is like attending a modern art dinner party where the cookware is made from dough. Nudake Cafe only adds to the experience by offering wildly creative desserts that look unlike anything you've ever seen. Even the pastries and cakes are presented like pieces at an exhibit so keep your camera phone ready.

Multiple locations

Cheese Industry (cheese-themed)

There's a themed cafe in South Korea that will surely make all of your cheesy dreams a reality. Appropriately named Cheese Industry, it's most known for its cheesecakes that resemble cheese wheels, amongst other dairy-rich appetite-whetting offerings. From wooden cows that move to cascading LED marquees that read "Cheese Industry," to the farm-like aesthetic, you'll be moo'ing with glee. Along with cheese-infused desserts and beverages, there are also cheese-less options. Like many themed cafes in South Korea, Cheese Industry is a hot spot for locals and often has a line outside. The cheese-perience is most certainly worth the wait, not to mention, the Instagrammable opportunity.

instagram.com/cheeseindustry

Witch's Kitchen (witch-themed)

Referred to as Manyeojubang in its homeland, Witch's Kitchen is a place that's in a state of perpetual Halloween. The main difference is that rather than ghouls, ghosts, and things that go bump in the night, it's dedicated solely to witch lore. Dimly lit and scarily immersive, the interior is like entering a dark fantasyland that's somehow spooky and inviting. After the aesthetic puts you under a spell, enjoy a cauldron's worth of food and beverage options. The menu features a wide range of savory Korean dishes served in cookware that fits the theme, and the purveyors experiment with some witchy cocktail recipes that look like drinkable potions and are served in IV pouches.

witchskitchen.co.kr

Daelim Changgo (industrial-themed)

You'll find more than a warm cup of joe at Daelim Changgo, it's also an art gallery and community hot spot. It's a spacious warehouse with a rustic industrial aesthetic and looks as if it were an actual factory once upon a time. Red brick walls are worn, beams are exposed, and the floor is plain gray concrete. As unfinished as it may sound, the aged look is what makes Daelim Changgo so charming. There are two stories of space for patrons to enjoy solo or with a group of friends. Under a large transparent sunlit roof, enjoy a menu that features a large selection of pastries, desserts, and caffeinated drinks.

78 Seongsui-ro, Seongdong-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Petite France (French village-themed)

South Korea does an awesome job of recreating the feeling of visiting a foreign country. Petite France is one such place as its French village-themed and looks as if it were lifted from French soil and transported to Seoul. It was inspired by "Le Petite Prince," a 1943 book authored by Saint-Exupery. There, locals can immerse themselves in French culture along Korea's countryside. The property features 16 buildings, some of which can be rented by guests. Stop by the cafe for different types of coffee and enjoy the spectacular view while sipping away. If that weren't exciting enough, Petite France has a youth training facility, a marionette experience, and more.

943 Kings Cross (Harry Potter-themed)

Dive into the magical world of Harry Potter at 943 Kings Cross. Inside you're welcome to explore five distinct floors with varying themes. The first floor recreates the wand shop, a necessary stop for young spellcasters. There's food and beverages available too, as you'll need sustenance for your wizarding adventures. Down in the basement, you can peruse a selection of magic potions (a.k.a. alcoholic beverages). Move up to the second floor to visit a cafe inspired by Hogsmeade. After you've procured a cup of joe, enjoy it with friends on the third floor, where the Hogwarts Great Hall is. The fourth and final floor is the wizard dormitory, another lounge area for you to relax in, rent wizard robes, and take pictures for the 'gram.

24, Yanghwa-ro 16-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Greem Cafe (line art-themed)

Stepping into Greem Cafe is like entering an illustration. It resembles a 2D outlined version of a storybook-style cafe or a cartoon. From the tables and chairs to the walls and countertops, one thing's for sure, you can snap some insanely cool pictures there. Sometimes referred to as Café Yeonnam-Dong 223014 (its address), Greem is considered a modern dabang  or updated version of a traditional South Korean tea shop. While you can certainly purchase coffee, tea, pastries, and more there, the real attraction is the immersive design. One caveat to honor before getting your selfie on is first to purchase one item from the menu.

artworkgreem.com/?ckattempt=2

Sinleedoga Cafe (Hanok Village-themed)

Nestled in a small alleyway in Hongdae is a cafe from another period: Sinleedoga Cafe. It's located in a trendy South Korean neighborhood where its traditional aesthetic stands apart from the surrounding urbanized landscape. Inside, you'll find a nice mixture of the past and present spread across three separate floors. Sinleedoga thankfully offers more than looks though as it specializes in creative beverages like the Nurungji Latte, made with scorched rice. After you find a place to sit, enjoy your latte paired with one of the menu's array of pastries and desserts. The ambiance is warm, welcoming, and a nice escape from the city.

20-12 Jandari-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Sanrio Lovers Club (Sanrio character-themed)

South Korean locals can obsess over classic Japanese cartoon characters. Sanrio Lovers Club is dedicated to one of the most popular animated worlds to come from Asia. You may have heard of Hello Kitty, but if not, it's an overly cute cartoon cat created by Sanrio and one of many characters. Two words best describe what you'll find at Sanrio Lovers Club: pink and cute. From wall to wall, ceiling to floor, you're surrounded by pinktopia. There are pink and purple lockers plastered with Sanrio stickers, pink lounge chairs with puffy Sanrio characters, and even the bathroom has a wall covered by Sanrio plushies. You might just forget to buy coffee.

18 Wausan-ro 19-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Koriko Cafe (Kiki's Delivery Service-themed)

Another Japanese cartoon-themed place takes inspiration from one of the world's most legendary animation studios, Studio Ghibli. Koriko Cafe gets its name from the place where "Kiki's Delivery Service" is set. The building even looks like the bakery that Kiki worked at in the film. Inside, rather than overdoing the Ghibli inspiration, it's decorated in a humble cottage style that's found in many of the studio's popular films. Bits and bobs of ornaments throughout the cafe are a cherry on top of the overall experience. As you might expect, the menu is filled with tasty options inspired by Kiki's Delivery Service too.

223-96 Yeonnam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Check Grow (library-themed)

The name of this cozy-themed cafe doesn't give much away but one visit will surely turn it into a favorite go-to. Check Grow (referred to as Chaegro) is a two-story library-themed cafe with a beautiful view. Inspired by a desire to break from the hustle and bustle of societal expectations, it's meant to provide an escape and serve as a return to self. When life's expectations begin to weigh you down, Check Grow encourages you to stop by for a coffee and connect face-to-face with people, books, and yourself. Those in need of a good book can participate in Check Grow's reading club as well.

Ddo-Ong Café (poop-themed)

Drinking coffee has been known to send people running to the restroom. Well, at a unique coffee shop called Ddo-Ong Café, everything is about poop. Only someone with poop on the brain could imagine some of the funny (or funky) things you'll find there. Childishness is welcomed at Ddo-Ong Café. From poo plushies and massive bean bags to poo seat cushions and poo-inspired beverages, it's certainly worth getting gassed about. The menu offers customers a choice between solid or mushy poo coffee that ranges in color from dark brown to tarry green. Even funnier, there's a sweet corn-filled option as well. The best part of the experience is the toilet bowl coffee mugs.

Insadong-gil, Jongno-gu 4th floor of Ssamzigil mall, Seoul

However You Want Cafe (paint-themed)

Coffee pairs well with all sorts of activities, and at However You Want Cafe, customers get to flex their creative muscles while enjoying a warm mug. Paint is the theme and it's incorporated into every inch of the cafe. Each room is a solid color and throughout, the cafe is decorated with theme-centric items like painter's coveralls, paint cans, brushes, and more. Sauces and creams resemble vivid multi-colored paint that you're meant to pour atop cakes and pastries. Even the beverages resemble a vibrant rainbow gradient. However You Want Cafe is easily one of the best places to snap a cool picture.

Cafe 1in1jan (Eunpyeong Hanok village view-themed)

While there are many traditional-style cafes in South Korea, no place is more transportative than Cafe 1in1jan. With five floors for you to enjoy coffee on and a jaw-dropping view of the sprawling Eunpyeong Hanok Village beside the Bukhansan mountain range, each sip is like drinking a bit of South Korea itself. Despite its massive size, it's a popular spot for locals and is frequently filled with tourists. The basement level is a gallery space, while floors one and two are the cafe. Floor three is a showroom for wooden furniture maker Karimoku, and four and five belong to 1in1sang restaurant.

Coffee Hanyakbang & Hyemindang Desserts (traditional medicine-themed)

A themed cafe that's also a historical treasure in South Korea is Coffee Hanyakbang. Hanyakbang means "herbal medicine shop." Once the home to Heo Jun, the chief physician for the royal hospital, it is now a coffeehouse and bakery. Visiting the small establishment is like being a guest of Heo Jun as it still retains much of the original 1920s aesthetic. The cafe still contains furniture from China's Song Dynasty. World War II artifacts pepper the interior design, adding to the overall historical feel. Even the drip coffee-making method used there is old world. Directly adjacent is the Hyemindang bakery which serves complimentary desserts in a similarly traditional setting.

If you’re a fan of LP cafes, House of Vinyl in Mangwon-dong offers a relaxing and calming afternoon of music and coffee. The cafe feels almost like a house, with most of the seats facing their music system – an LP player with gigantic speakers. Seats are limited, and it does get crowded during the weekends. Menu-wise, it’s not the most extensive, but you can have the usual coffee menu and a small range of desserts.

Butter & Shelter

Food and drinks at Butter & Shelter

Aesthetic cafes are common in the neighbourhood of Yeonnam-dong, but Butter & Shelter caught our attention with its simple, cottagecore vibes. London Bagel Museum

London Bagel Museum

Situated in Anguk, London Bagel Museum is one of Seoul’s most popular cafes, and it is common to find snaking queues at any time of day. The freshly baked bagels are continuously replenished for patrons to help themselves to – they come in a mix of sweet and savoury flavours like Blueberry , Dark Chocolate , Pepperoni Cheese , Spinach Cheese and many more! It is also recommended to pair your bagels with cream cheese, which comes in flavours like maple pecan , garlic spring onion and truffle pesto . While most patrons opt for takeaway, you can also dine in and enjoy the British-themed interior décor!

Cafe Onion Gwangjang

seoul must visit cafe

The popular cafe chain, Café Onion has opened its fourth and newest outlet in Gwangjang Market . The cafe is decked out in an open-air industrial theme featuring raw concrete and exposed brick. You will find benches and stools in an outdoor seating area, covered in the brand’s signature ‘Onion’ tape. One of the many unique things about this outlet is that they only serve one food item, which is their Strawberry Pastry Pizza – a flaky, buttery pastry that resembles a croissant and is served with strawberry jam. Drink choices include their signature Hazelnut Latte and Omija Tea.

Check out a comparison of the different Cafe Onion outlets in Korea to decide which one to visit!

Tidewater_Cafe in Seoul_Interior

Tucked away in an alley within Seochon Village, Tidewater Cafe can be found in a gorgeous hanok that makes it worth hunting for. They serve a variety of teas such as White Tea, Oolong, Red Tea, Pu’er and one of the highlights is you can have the experience of brewing your own tea! Pair your tea with the dessert of your choice – there’s Black Rice Matcha Cake , Rice Cake Castella and many more options for you to choose from!

Artist Bakery

Artist Bakery Seoul Exterior

Artist Bakery is one of the hottest bakeries in Seoul! Opened by the folks behind London Bagel Museum, this bakery cafe near Anguk station offers a variety of salt bread alongside bakes like baguette sandwiches and comforting bowls of soup. There’s quite a long queue even on weekdays, but opting for takeaway is one of the ways to skip the snaking queues. One of our favourite items was the Original Salt Bread (Soft Version), so make sure to try it!

Cafe Low Roof

Cafe Low Roof Backyard

Situated near Bukchon Hanok Village, Cafe Low Roof is a spot that has a remarkable concept. When setting foot into the storefront, it appears like any other modern cafe with clean lines and a minimalist theme. However, in the backyard of Cafe Low Roof lies Hyigyeomjae, a Hanok built in the 1920s. Its majestic architecture gives a beautiful contrast to the modern design of the cafe. Caffeinated beverages include Americano , Flat White and their Signature Cream Latte while dessert options such as Chestnut Cream Croissant, Financiers and Scones are available as well.

In the heart of one of western Seoul’s oldest industrial neighbourhoods, Mullae-dong, lies Pont Cafe . It is one of the handfuls of cafes that have slowly popped up in Mullae-dong over the past few years. The design of Pont Cafe is certainly something to appreciate as it retains the original charm of the factory building that it is located in while incorporating modern elements. Indulge in buttery, flaky pastries like their Canele, Choc Twist and Almond Croissants . Coffee-based beverages like Espresso, Latte and Flat White are available as well.

Teddy Beurre House

Croissants and drinks we ordered

If you’re ever in the Samgakji/Singyongsan area, one particular cafe stands out amongst the rest and it’s none other than Teddy Beurre House. This cafe might be the reason locals head to the area, to try their hand at the range of bakes such as the iconic Pistachio Kouign Amann , Milk Cream Castella Croissant and more. We absolutely enjoyed the pastries in their French cottage-inspired setting, definitely worth adding to your list!

2nd Floor of Seoullo PH Cafe

Seoullo PH is another café with a mesmerizing view – it’s located within a high-rise building close to Seoul Station, making it easily accessible for everyone. Upon entering the premises, you will be welcomed into a huge space that spans three floors. Liberal use of marble and the ceiling-to-floor windows which let in a lot of natural light give this establishment an airy and luxurious feel. Seoullo PH is well-known for its brunch menu, with options like Steak Salad and Burrata Cheese Salad. Drinks like Iced Corn Latte and Grapefruit Ade are available as well!

Urban Plant Seobinggo

Glasshouse Cafe in Seoul Urban Plant Seobinggo

Urban Plant Seobinggo has to be one of the most beautiful cafes in Seoul! Follow the stepping stone walkway that leads you over the shallow pool, and you will be welcomed into a space that combines both modern and traditional features to create a timeless and eye-catching design. The items on the menu are equally as visually appealing – with drinks such as the Green Flow , a drink resembling a Matcha version of an Einspanner. Another highlight is the Chocolate Mousse Cake and Canele, featuring a ‘rock’ perched delicately on top of a canelé, which is filled with a thick, rich layer of mousse when dug into.

Non-Coffee Beverages from Hey! The River

The River is a 4-in-1 spot located along the Han River, specifically near Seoraeseom for this one. In one building, you’ll find 4 different concepts, from a cafe, fine dining restaurant, live music bar and wine bar. At night, we highly recommend visiting the wine bar as the ceiling is decorated with tiny lights, making it feel as though you’re dining under a sky of stars!

Oats Coffee is renowned for its Einspanner , a drink made by topping black coffee with cold whipped cream. Their Yongsan branch is conveniently located near to Sookmyung Women’s University Station (Line 4) and Namyeong Station (Line 1). The cafe is tastefully decorated with wood and tatami, befitting the industrial vibes of Yongsan-gu. Other beverages include drip coffee, Milk Tea and Matcha Latte . Be sure to pair your drink with a scone, which comes in different flavours such as Butter, Cranberry, Matcha and more!

Interior of Ichi Seoul near Sinsa

Ichi Seoul is located in Sinsa-dong, somewhat hidden from the crowds that mainly head for Garosugil. It has a simplistic design, with modern design elements such as wood slats making the place refreshingly elegant. Some of the drinks that Ichi Seoul sells include Basil Strawberry Latte , Cherry Cinnamon Ade , Basil Kiwi Ade and more. Ichi Seoul’s ice cream, especially their Mugwort Ice Cream is definitely worth a try as well, and can be served in a variety of different styles depending on your preference!

Glasshouse Cafe Hrr Seoul

Hrr Seoul is another cafe that specializes in serving bagels. It is located near Jamwon Hangang Park, so be sure to stop by if you are visiting! Paying homage to the site’s heritage as a ferry dock, this glasshouse cafe features an all-white interior with some wooden furnishings.

The bestsellers here are the bagels, which come in flavours like Blueberry, Squid Ink Cheese and Cheese Potato. Like any good bagel shop, they also sell a variety of cream cheese like Maple Cinnamon , Chives Bacon and Corn ! You can also find Drinks such as Latte with Condensed Milk , Lemon Ade and Choco Shake .

Nudake Sinsa

Kimchi Oniwassant Nudake Sinsa

If you’re in Sinsa-dong, pay a visit to Nudake . The Sinsa outlet is croissant-themed, with furniture and even staff outfits coordinated around the pastry. This outlet is also known for its onigiri croissants which have taken social media by storm. We recommend visiting during the weekdays for the best experience.

It features a super instagrammable interior with modern architecture and walls that are painted in a unique camel shade. D Flat Cafe is a great spot for those looking to get some work done, and they even have power points to charge your devices. One of their menu highlights is the Drip Coffee which comes in many bean options. Other beverages include their signature D Flat White and Ice Cream Latte . They also have dessert options like Green Tea Triangle and Chestnut Tarte .

Seoul Angmusae

It’s impossible to miss Seoul Angmusae while walking through Seongsu – thanks to its colourful wall that has catapulted it to Instagram fame. The Kouign Amann and Cinnamon Rolls are the specialities here, and the sheer variety of flavours that you can choose from is amazing! Some of the options include Matcha Mochi Kouign Amann , Kouign Amann Rum Raisin and Chilly Pizza Cinnamon Roll . The desserts are delectable to look at as well, with one-half of the Kouign Amann covered in toppings, and the other half retaining its buttery, flaky texture!

Grandpa Factory

Grandpa Factory is widely known for being featured on K-dramas and variety shows like Vincenzo and More Than Friends. The entire space comes across as being one with nature – especially with elements such as the built-in treehouse, which can be accessed via the second floor and the rooftop filled with greenery. Grandpa Factory serves some interesting drinks like Dirty Einspanner and Hallabong Ade. They also have mains consisting of dishes like Shrimp Pomodoro , Avocado Chicken Breast Salad and Mixed Mushroom Risotto .

Foreplan Cafe

Foreplan Interior

Located in Seongsu, Foreplan is a unique architecture-themed cafe opened by architects. With an interior that looks almost like an architect’s office, perfectly blending elements of wood, glass and bricks – this cafe is worth visiting when in Seoul!

Eunpyeong Hanok Village Cafe (1in1jan)

view of eunpyeong hanok village

Near the outskirts of Seoul next to Bukhansan mountain lies Eunpyeong Hanok Village, a relatively low-profile hanok village that is not known to many. Overlooking the village, 1in1jan , a cafe housed in a 5-storey building provides a breathtaking view of the entire village. Wooden flooring and antique furniture give this cafe a hanok-themed aesthetic. One of the highlights is the Grapefruit Tea, made from handmade concentrates to give a better flavour. Their traditional rice cake desserts, such as the mal-ee-ddeok, filled with red beans are also one of the many delicacies.

Undoubtedly, one of the best cafes in Seoul!
