Later today, The Smashing Pumpkins will appear at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood for a commemorative ceremony in celebration of their tour announcement. Each band-member will add their handprints in cement, joining a long list of global treasures before them.
When The Smashing Pumpkins first emerged out of Chicago in 1988, the world had never heard a band quite like them. They spun together rock, pop, shoe-gaze, metal, goth, psychedelia, and electronic into a kaleidoscope of saccharine melodies, fuzzy distortion, bombastic orchestration, incendiary fretwork, eloquent songcraft, and unshakable hooks. Upon their formation, their sound was different, iconoclastic, and wholly new—and it still is today. As a result, they’ve sold over 30 million albums worldwide and collected two GRAMMY® Awards, two MTV VMAs, and an American Music Award. Their catalog is highlighted by the platinum Gish [1991], the quadruple-platinum Siamese Dream [1993], diamond-certified Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness [1995], platinum Adore [1998], and gold Machina/The Machines of God [2000]. In 2018, they embarked on one of their most successful tours ever, the Shiny and Oh So Bright Tour , followed by SHINY AND OH SO BRIGHT, VOL. 1 / LP: NO PAST. NO FUTURE. NO SUN. Meanwhile, 2020 saw the release of the band’s eleventh full-length and latest double album, CYR . As prolific as ever, The Smashing Pumpkins confirmed they will release more music in 2022 as they resume touring. More details to come.

jane says this is smashing news
Smashing pumpkins and jane's addiction head to houston on alt-rock dream 'fire' tour.
Heads up, shoe-gaze fans. Two Gen X favorites are headed to Houston to kick it like it’s 1996.
Alt-rock superpower Smashing Pumpkins will bring all its rage to Toyota Center on October 3 as part of a 32-date Spirits on Fire Tour . Adding to the can’t-miss appeal: art rockers Jane’s Addiction will join Smashing Pumpkins on the bill for select dates, including a Texas run. Genre-bending singer/satirist Poppy will open for a majority of the trek.
The Spirits on Fire Tour kicks off at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, on October 2, before heading to Toyota Center the following day on October 3. The tour then heads to the Moody Center in Austin on October 5.
Expect tickets to go fast for the major tour — the first since 2019 for the Pumpkins and since 2016 for Jane’s Addiction. Pre-sale begins at 10 am Thursday, May 12 , while general sales begin at 10 am Friday, May 13. All ticket information and more details can be found at the official tour site .
After the big Texas trio dates, the tour will wind across the country, visit Canadian cities Toronto and Montreal, and conclude at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles (a fitting venue for the L.A.-based Jane’s Addiction.)
On Wednesday, May 11, Smashing Pumpkins will hit L.A.’s TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood to commemorate the tour announcement. Members will even add their handprints to the cement in a time-honored tradition.
Leading a stream of Chicago alt-rock talent, Smashing Pumpkins debuted in 1988, combining rock, shoe-gaze, pop, metal, goth, psychedelia, and electronic. Fans fell in love with the effortless hooks, sweeping orchestration, and lead singer Billy Corgan’s vocals that would jump from mumble to shriek without warning.
The Pumpkins boast 30 million albums sold worldwide, two Grammy Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, and an American Music Award. Memorable releases include the platinum Gish (1991), the quadruple-platinum Siamese Dream (1993), diamond-certified Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995), platinum Adore (1998), and gold Machina/The Machines of God (2000). Pumpkins singles such as “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” (and its unforgettable “despite all my rage” chorus) and “Tonight, Tonight” have become TV commercial, sports broadcast, and pop culture fixtures.
The band promises to release even more tunes this year in conjunction with the tour.
Formed in 1985 in L.A., Jane’s Addiction is the brainchild of flamboyant lead singer Perry Farrell and founding bassist Eric Avery. The band also bent and fused genres, mixing in new wave, metal, funk, and dreamy art rock into unforgettable singles such as “Stop,” “Been Caught Stealing,” and “Hard Charger.” The 1990 album Ritual de lo Habitual has become an alt-rock how-to for countless bands since.
Considered one of the most influential acts of the 1990s, Jane’s Addiction saw myriad lineup changes; guitarist Dave Navarro even joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers for a red-hot minute.
Always wildly innovative, Farrell is the mastermind of the music and art fest, Lollapalooza, now a pop culture icon itself.
Smashing Pumpkins will kick off the tour in Texas.

Smashing Pumpkins (formed in 1988) is an American alternative rock band formed by frontman Billy Corgan and guitarist James Iha.
Following the break-up of his gothic rock band The Marked, frontman Billy Corgan departed his home in St. Petersburg, Florida, U.S. and returned to his native city Chicago, U.S. Before long Corgan met rhythm guitarist James Iha and the two practiced and made their debut performance as a duo at the Polish Bar Chicago 21. The pair named themselves The Smashing Pumpkins and shortly after met bassist D’arcy Wretzky who was invited to join along with jazz drummer Jimmy Chamberlin.
The Smashing Pumpkins made their recording debut on a Chicago alternative rock compilation CD entitled “Light Into Dark”, which was followed by their sell-out debut single “I Am One” released in 1990 through Limited Potential Records. The band’s full-length debut arrived after signing with Caroline Records in 1991, “Gish”, produced by Butch Vig, fused alternative rock with heavy metal, psychedelia and dream pop, drawing comparisons with Jane’s Addiction. After subsequently releasing the EP “Lull” in October 1991, The Smashing Pumpkins signed with Virgin Records and supported their album with opening slots for bands such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction and Guns N’ Roses.
In an attempt to move drummer Chamberlin away from his narcotic supply, the band moved to Marietta, Georgia in 1992 to record their sophomore album. With the help of producer Butch Vig again, “Siamese Dream” came about amidst a sea of turbulence within the band. Corgan, as with the first album, thought it was best for him alone to play all the guitar and bass parts, drawing some resentment from Wretzky and Iha. Chamberlin quickly found new drug connections and was absent for days at a time and Corgan was responding to his depression by spending all of his time in the studio.
Followed by a relentless touring schedule with appearances at 1994’s Lollapalooza tour and Reading Festival in 1995, Virgin issued a B-sides and rarities compilation titled “Pisces Iscariot” which reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200.
For the follow-up album frontman Corgan wrote fifty-six songs which ultimately got narrowed down to twenty-eight for 1995’s “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness”. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, became double platinum selling, earned the band seven Grammy nominations and spawned the hits “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” and “1979”. Around this time The Smashing Pumpkins were considered one of the biggest bands in the world, with considerable airplay on MTV and an appearance on the Simpsons.
In 1996 touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin and Chamberlin overdosed on heroin in a hotel room in New York City, Melvoin died and Chamberlin fortunately escaped the same fate. Chamberlin was subsequently fired and Corgan named “Mellon Collie…” the band’s last conventional rock album. True to his word the album’s follow-up “Adore” arrived in 1998 and represented a huge shift towards electronica and gothic influences. The album sold around 830,000 copies which was considered a failure by the record label. The band supported the release with a 17-date North American tour funded entirely out of the band’s pocket, of which they donated $2.8 million in total to charity over the course of.
After a short lived reunion with rehabilitated Chamberlin and the departure of Wretzky, who was replaced by Melissa Auf der Maur, The Smashing Pumpkins released their fifth full-length “Machina/The Machines of God” in 2000. The album performed poorly compared to its predecessors, however was argued to be one of their strongest. In 2000 the band announced they were disbanding after independently releasing “Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music” in September.
In 2005 Corgan took out a full-page ad in The Chicago Tribune to announce The Smashing Pumpkins were returning. Chamberlin was the only original other member to actually return, but alongside new guitarist Jeff Schroder and bassist Ginger Reyes they released the album “Zeitgiest” in 2007. From 2009 Corgan released a scattered selection of songs from a 44-track concept titled “Teargarden by Kaleidyscope” and followed by the full-length “Oceana” in 2010. The announcement of two new albums came in 2014 to tie up “Teargarden” concept, with the names “Monuments to an Elegy” and “Day for Night”.
Live reviews
I used to listen to Smashing Pumpkins growing up. I didn't listen to a lot of their stuff, probably only like a song or two, so it was kind of neat to see this concert. I'm not sure what I was expecting when I went to see them, but the concert performance was overall a lot more low key than I was expecting, but not in a bad way.
As it is, it's kind of what I expect from an alternate rock group. The venue is very fitting for this band and their performance, a dark place with low lighting giving off the feeling of low energy and little movement. There's a certain kind of drab intensity I feel while watching this concert, kind of like time has slowed down and the outside world doesn't exist, at least for now. It's oddly enjoyable.
During the songs, the crowd is very quiet, but will show their appreciation in between songs. Billy Corgan does a good job singing, as always. The rest of the band is very good as well, especially the drummer. Billy as I recollect him looks very young (due to this being over 20 years ago), and there's a grunge feel to the concert because of the times. The music and atmosphere feels kind of raw but in the grungy sort of way.

If it had not been for the love, respect, and talent of the Pumpkins, the entire night would have been trash. A certain entertainer from across the pond is just a mirage of an oasis since splitting with his brother, but he made matters worse. From his first interactions with the crowd and everyone after, he made it a point to belittle the community, state, and fans with "F" bomb laden disparaging remarks. His condescending attitude oozed from every pure of his being. Hemade completely clear from comments such as the first of his set, 75% of his set, was "fucking for him" and "buy his fucking merchandise because he isn't making a dime just fucking performing there," made it evident that he truly was a wretched person consumed by greed and former fame. His parting shot was "fuck Rogers, fuck Arkansas, we're never fucking coming back to this fucking state again!" May he have a safe, expensive, and miserable stay and trip back from Arkansas and the United States.
The Pumpkins killed it as did AFI!
I didn't see Smashing Pumpkins lately. I saw them at the Arlene Schnitzer Auditorium in 2016 and the show was great but I didn't buy the tickets. I had a dream while napping the afternoon of the show telling me, I need to go up to the box office at the Schnitzer with $80 and see if I can get tickets. At that time I was listening to Siamese Dream everyday and finding for the first time so long after it was released I was amazed. We got to the box office and they were sold out so a guy in line was watching the whole thing and offered an extra ticket he had because his girlfriend didn't want to go and then another guy about 15 people back said basically the same thing, so I had 2 tickets for free for me and my date. It pays to listen to your dreams " Siamese Dream's" that is..
This was an amazing show! They played flawlessly in my opinion. From songs like 'Today', and 'Tonight, Tonight', to David Bowie's 'Fame' their energy tore the roof off the Warfield!!
What I especially liked was there was no opening act, it was just them, what I came to see!
This was one of the best shows I've seen in a very long time!
The last time I had an opportunity to see them was around 1992/1993 when they headlined Lollapalooza. At the time they only played one song because it seemed they were wasted on something! I remember being very disappointed with this.
This time I was happy to hear Billy say that he never appreciated the fans when he was younger, but now he does! This really reflected in their performance!
What a show! I am still in awe!
I had never been to a smashing pumpkins concert before and I didn't know what to expect. Their songs are great. They played all the ones I am familiar with. They sang awesome. However I was not impressed with their stage show. They just stood there like statues. The background set was boring. And the stage lights kept blinding me and gave me a headache. I actually fell asleep during smashing pumpkins. Marilyn Manson was also there. He was kick ass. Awesome stage show as always. Seen him like 5xs before. Interacted with the audience. Great background set and props as always. Loved it,the best part of the show was Manson!!!!
3 stars. Overall a good show and reasonably priced. They did a great job on a Bowie cover and the first half of the show was great. The second half was featured a lot of Zwan and their newer stuff which I like to call twitchy techo rock, Just not feeling it. They did a version of "Stand Inside Your Love" where Katie Cole leads the vocals, it was amazing. Billy's got a signature voice but I think it sounds better in a duet. Sorry to end on a bad note but, I don't know how you screw up Disarm but they found a way... Billy Solo with an organ. Skip the bad Rolling stones cover and get out before the encore.
I was fortunate enough to see this show in OKC on Saturday and then again on Wednesday in Dallas. Even though it was the same set both nights, I loved every second of it. While they do play a good amount of hits, some of the other tunes and covers they play are really what stand out over the 3+ hour set. The stage production is probably the best I've ever seen them have. I've seen The Smashing Pumpkins every chance I've had for the past 22 years and Billy and Jimmy still shred their instruments and impress me every time. If you're on the fence about this show, GO. You will not regret it.
I kind of feared the new lineup and new material would provide a less than thrilling night out but boy was I wrong. This is a very tight band and I was captivated by every song, including the many new ones I didn't know, because of the power and skill of the playing and the quality of the compositions. This was a guitar feast with two fabulous soloists taking it in turns to dazzle us. Especially in the second half of the show it was a ferocious sonic assault; classy, masterful, above all really heavy. For the nostalgic they played plenty of hits too. I loved it. Pumpkins still rule!
The Paramount Theater in Seattle seems to be a perfectly appropriate venue for the Smashing Pumpkins. The sound was very well managed - loud enough to rock but not so loud that it was just ringing.
I especially liked Billy's cover of Space Oddity but the rendition of Disarm with the Organ was odd to me, but then I love playing that tune on my acoustic guitar so I guess I am biased.
The only thing I didn't like was that leg room for the seats. It felt very cramped and tight. But is was easy to forget about that when listening to the band.
Best concert ever! The band was on fire, Corgan and Iha are a surprisingly good comic duo, the setlist was incredible with songs spanning all their career and surprise numbers like a Rolling Stones cover. The stage was magic, with giant puppets and light shows that really made the evening seem like something out of a dream.
The location is small and collected and the sound was PERFECT, contributing to the atmosphere: it seemed like an evening with friends, the gods descending between men to share stories and emotions.
Beyond good.

SMASHING PUMPKINS Announce New Summer 2024 North American Headline Tour Dates
Expanding an already stacked schedule, two-time Grammy Award -winning iconic rock band THE SMASHING PUMPKINS reveal a string of new North American headline performances in 2024. In addition to a combination of arena and headliner festival dates in Europe and North American stadium performances with GREEN DAY , as part of "The Saviors Tour" , the band added additional solo arena bookings that span July through September. This new run of dates kicks off on July 31 in Muskoka, Ontario at Kee to Bala, rolls through markets such as Kansas City, Cedar Rapids, St. Louis, and concludes on September 27 in Las Vegas, Nevada at Fontainebleau. Plus, they will close out Osheaga Festival as one of the headlining acts in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on August 3.
Tickets for the new dates will be available starting with an artist presale beginning Tuesday, April 2 at 10 a.m. local time. Additional presales will run throughout the week ahead of the general onsale beginning Friday, April 5 at 10 a.m. local time at smashingpumpkins.com/tour/.
THE SMASHING PUMPKINS continue firing on all cylinders live. During 2023, they headlined and curated their very own "The World Is A Vampire" tour joined by STONE TEMPLE PILOTS and RIVAL SONS , while 2022 saw them canvas North America on the "Spirits On Fire" tour alongside JANE'S ADDICTION . A spectacle of eye-catching stage production and a setlist sequenced like a film with moments of heavy guitar catharsis and transcendent melodic singalongs, their shows have consistently incited widespread critical applause. NME professed, "it's indisputable that the band are responsible for many of the '90s' best rock songs, and this is as good as you're going to hear them." Meanwhile, The Patriot Ledger proclaimed, " [THE] SMASHING PUMPKINS proved they are still one of America's most interesting — sometimes befuddling, but never boring — musical groups." Miami New Times attested, "the band took the audience back in time to when alternative music was the mainstream, and the idea of browsing on your phone during a fantastic concert was bad sci-fi satire."
Last year, THE SMASHING PUMPKINS completed the three-act trilogy "Atum" , releasing the 33-track project in its entirety. Among many highlights, it boasted "Beguiled" , which catapulted to No. 6 at Active Rock and No. 12 at Alternative Radio charts. "Spellbinding" emerged as the No. 1 most-added at Alternative Rock. Plus. Rolling Stone applauded, " 'Atum' is clearly meant to be the kind of record that requires your full attention, and Act Three makes for a nicely trippy conclusion to the whole project, as well as an intriguing listening experience in and of itself." In a "4-out-of-5 star" review, NME raved, "This sci-fi-inspired epic is ambitious and complex."
THE SMASHING PUMPKINS are currently in the studio recording the follow up to "Atum" as they prepare to release new music this year.
Newly announced tour dates:
Jul. 31 - Muskoka, ON - Kee to Bala Aug. 03 - Montreal, Quebec - Osheaga Festival Aug. 04 - Bangor, ME - Maine Savings Bank Amphitheatre Aug. 14 - Kansas City, MO - Starlight Theatre Aug. 16 - Springfield, IL - Illinois State Fair Aug. 20 - Des Moines, IA - Vibrant Music Hall Aug. 21 - St. Louis, MO - Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre Aug. 27 - Simpsonville, SC - CCNB Amphitheatre at Heritage Park Sep. 10 - Southaven, MS - BankPlus Amphitheatre at Snowden Grove Sep. 21 - Reno, NV - Grand Sierra Resort Sep. 24 - Airway Heights, WA - BECU Live at Northern Quest Sep. 27 - Las Vegas, NV - BleauLive Theater inside Fontainebleau Las Vegas at Fontainebleau

Upon their formation, their sound was different, iconoclastic, and wholly new-and it still is today.
As a result, they've sold over 30 million albums worldwide and collected two GRAMMY® Awards, two MTV VMAs, and an American Music Award. Their catalog is highlighted by the platinum Gish [1991], the quadruple-platinum Siamese Dream [1993], diamond-certified Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness [1995], platinum Adore [1998], and gold Machina/The Machines of God [2000].
In 2018, they embarked on one of their most successful tours ever, the Shiny and Oh So Bright Tour, followed by SHINY AND OH SO BRIGHT, VOL. 1 / LP: NO PAST. NO FUTURE. NO SUN. Meanwhile, 2020 saw the release of the band's eleventh full-length and latest double album, CYR. As prolific as ever, The Smashing Pumpkins confirmed they will release more music in 2022 as they resume touring. More details to come.

Smashing Pumpkins Debut Two New Songs at Triumphant Tour Kickoff: Review, Set List
No small feat following up Jane's Addiction 's ferocious set at Sunday night's Spirits on Fire Tour kickoff, but the Smashing Pumpkins rose to the occasion with a dynamic headlining performance that blended massive hits, old-school deep cuts and a sprinkling of brand-new, unreleased songs.
The Billy Corgan -fronted outfit opened its hour-and-50-minute set with "Empires," a recently released song from the upcoming three-part rock opera ATUM . The 33-track set will serve as a sequel to the band's chart-topping 1995 double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness , as well as 2000's Machina/Machines of God . Mellon Collie was the most-represented album in the Smashing Pumpkins' oeuvre on Sunday, accounting for six of the evening's 22 songs.
The group dished out the aggressive, anthemic "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" and "Zero," treated the audience to an acoustic version of "Tonight, Tonight" and summoned the biggest singalong of the night with "1979." They ended the set with a brutal, knuckle-dragging rendition of "X.Y.U.," contrasting nicely with the delicate Machina II cut "If There Is a God" that preceded it.
Other requisite hits and set-list mainstays — Siamese Dream smashes "Cherub Rock" and "Disarm," Adore 's "Ava Adore" — made their appearances, but overall, the Smashing Pumpkins' tour kickoff was hardly the warm, fuzzy nostalgia trip that some audience members had hoped it would be. Along with the darkly seductive ATUM track " Beguiled ," the band debuted two new songs from the upcoming album. The first, "Neophyte," was a melancholy, synth-inflected number whose " It ain't right " refrain was emphasized by the words broadcasted on the screen behind the band. The second, "Harmageddon," was a riff-heavy thrasher that bore a passing resemblance to the obliterative Siamese Dream track "Silverfuck," which also appeared late in the set.
Corgan and the band seemed most engaged when they indulged that heavy side, including a doomy, larynx-shredding rendition of Talking Heads ' "Once in a Lifetime" that became an early set highlight. They also excited hardcore fans by dusting off Mellon Collie 's "We Only Come Out at Night" and Machina 's "I of the Mourning," which they hadn't played since 2008 and 2013, respectively.
Not everybody was receptive to the curveballs, though: It was easy to telegraph when fans would take their seats or make a run for the bar and bathroom as the band broke into newer or lesser-known material. No arena act is immune to this kind of apathy, and the Smashing Pumpkins have never been afraid to defy audience expectations, even at the expense of their popularity. And besides, the newer songs still had their perks, like a gobsmacking drum solo from Jimmy Chamberlin in the middle of 2018's "Solara."
If the Smashing Pumpkins' tour kickoff eschewed the instant gratification of a pure greatest-hits set, it also offered a defiant, often virtuosic display of dynamics from a band that still feels like it has something to prove — and isn't that all we want from our rock stars anyway?

The Smashing Pumpkins continue firing on all cylinders live. During 2023, they headlined and curated their very own The World Is A Vampire Tour joined by Stone Temple Pilots and Rival Sons, while 2022 saw them canvas North America on the Spirits On Fire Tour alongside Jane’s Addiction.
Upon their formation, their sound was different, iconoclastic, and wholly unique – and it still is today.
As a result, the band has sold over 30 million albums worldwide and collected two Grammy Awards, two MTV VMAs, and an American Music Award. Their catalog is highlighted by the platinum Gish [1991], the quadruple-platinum Siamese Dream [1993], diamond-certified Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness [1995], platinum Adore [1998], and gold Machina/The Machines of God [2000].

Alice Glass Covers Smashing Pumpkins' "Drown"
It's the first taste of a new project due this summer

BY Allie Gregory Published Apr 18, 2024
Alice Glass is back! After releasing her Exclaim!-favourite debut solo album PREY//IV in 2022, the hyperpop-industrial vet has returned with a cover of Smashing Pumpkins ' post- Gish single "Drown."
Joining forces with her long-time collaborator, producer Jupiter Keyes, the track is the first in a promise of "a new project due this summer."
Alice Glass shared the following of her transformative cover, which balances sparkling production with scattershot down-pitched, witch house-y vocals:
I believe in the power of art to transcend betrayal and disappointment. "Drown" is not just a cover; it's a testament to resilience and artistic integrity. This track was created after we were asked to be a part of an exciting compilation that ultimately didn't end up happening. But I didn't want that to stop us from sharing our interpretation of this iconic Smashing Pumpkins track. This release is a declaration of autonomy and a reminder that true artistry cannot be stifled by broken promises.
