  • Trivia After production on the film was completed, and a month before the release, Anton Yelchin died in a freak vehicle accident at age 27. During the ending credits, there is a dedication that reads, "For Anton." J.J. Abrams announced that Chekov would not be recast, "I would say you can't replace him. There will be no new casting. I can't imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better."
  • Goofs The amount of ships and soldiers that the enemy has in its swarm changes dramatically during the final battle, from a few thousand to tens/hundreds of thousands when they attack the station. However, previously in the film, it is stated that the planet has deep and large underground caverns so it is entirely possible that there were more ships underground. Also, the amount of soldiers that would be needed to pilot all the ships would be huge as it was shown that they contain at least one soldier in each ship. But when they were watching the video logs near the film's ending, Captain Edison clearly states that they found drones. It is quite possible that the bulk of the enemy fleet is made up of drones and controlled by the hive mind that the music disrupts.

Doctor 'Bones' McCoy : [after removing shrapnel from Spock] Yeah. They say it hurts less if it's a surprise.

Commander Spock : If I may adopt a parlance with which you are familiar, I can confirm your theory to be horseshit.

  • Crazy credits There is a giant green energy-hand, in the closing credits, mentioned in the movie as one of the possibilities for a ship lost in space.

The Federation starship USS Enterprise arrives at starbase Yorktown , for resupply and shore leave for its crew. Struggling to find meaning in their exploration, Captain James T. Kirk has applied for a promotion to vice admiral; he recommends Spock as his replacement. Meanwhile, Hikaru Sulu reunites with his family, Montgomery Scott works to keep the ship operational, and Spock and Nyota Uhura have ended their relationship; Spock also receives word from New Vulcan that Ambassador Spock has died.

Enterprise is dispatched on a rescue mission after an escape pod drifts out of a nearby uncharted nebula. Its occupant, Kalara, claims her ship is stranded on Altamid, a planet in the nebula. A massive swarm of small ships ambushes and quickly begins to tear the Enterprise apart. The swarm's leader, Krall, and his crew board the crippled Enterprise , capture and kill many crew members, and attempt to capture the Abronath, a relic recovered during a recent mission. Kirk orders the crew to abandon ship, leaving the remains of the Enterprise saucer section to crash on Altamid.

On the planet, Krall captures Sulu, Uhura, and other survivors. Kirk and Pavel Chekov , accompanied by Kalara, locate the Enterprise ' s saucer section. Knowing that Kalara knew they would be attacked, they trick her into revealing herself as Krall's spy. She is killed when Kirk and Chekov escape Krall's soldiers and flip the Enterprise saucer, crushing her. Elsewhere on the planet, Dr. Leonard McCoy and a wounded Spock search for other survivors. Spock explains to McCoy that the tension he witnessed between him and Uhura at Yorktown was due to his intention to leave Starfleet to help the Vulcan survivors, and continue the late Ambassador Spock's work. Jaylah, a scavenger who previously escaped Krall's encampment where her father was killed, rescues Scott and takes him to her makeshift home, the grounded Template:USS , an early Starfleet vessel reported missing over a century earlier. Scott is reunited with Kirk, Chekov, McCoy and Spock. Krall coerces the Enterprise crew to hand over the Abronath, then uses it to complete an ancient bioweapon . With the device complete, Krall intends to kill Yorktown ' s inhabitants, then use the base to attack the United Federation of Planets . Kirk and the others free the crew as Krall launches into space with the bioweapon, leading his drones to Yorktown .

The Enterprise survivors power up the Franklin and launch her in pursuit of Krall. Theorizing the swarm's system may be vulnerable to high frequencies such as VHF or radio , they jam and destroy the swarm by broadcasting the song " Sabotage " by the Beastie Boys . Krall is chased by the Franklin through Yorktown . Uhura, Kirk and Scotty discover from the Franklin ' s logs that Krall is actually Balthazar Edison, Franklin ' s former captain. A pre-Federation human soldier, Edison rejected the Federation's principles of unity and cooperation with former enemies like the Xindi and the Romulans . When he and his crew were stranded on Altamid by a wormhole, the survivors used the extinct natives' technology to prolong their lives at the cost of the others, and re-purposed the ancient race's dormant mining drone workers into the swarm. Thinking the Federation had abandoned them, Edison planned to destroy the Federation and resume galactic conflict. Kirk pursues Edison into Yorktown ' s ventilation system, where Edison activates the bioweapon. Before it can spread, Kirk ejects it and Edison into space, where the weapon disintegrates Edison. Using an alien ship they commandeered, Spock and McCoy save Kirk moments before he is also blown into space.

In the aftermath, Commodore Paris closes the files of Captain Edison and the USS Franklin crew. Though offered the promotion to vice admiral, Kirk decides to remain in his position as a captain; Spock chooses to remain in Starfleet, and renews his relationship with Uhura. On Kirk's recommendation, Jaylah is accepted into Starfleet Academy . As the crew celebrates Kirk's birthday, they watch the construction of their new ship, the USS Enterprise -A —and resume their mission.

Production [ ]

Development [ ].

Abrams returned only as a producer so he could focus on directing Star Wars: The Force Awakens . [7] [8] [9] [10] Writer-producer Roberto Orci was announced as director in May 2014. [11] [12] He would have been making his directorial debut . [13] However, in December, Orci's role was also listed as a producer only, [14] with Edgar Wright considered to replace him as director, along with a shortlist of others, including Rupert Wyatt , Morten Tyldum , Daniel Espinosa , Justin Lin and Duncan Jones . [15] Also, Star Trek actor and director Jonathan Frakes expressed interest in the job. [16] At the end of the month, Lin was announced as director of the third installment. [17]

Screenplay [ ]

In 2013, Orci had begun writing the script with Patrick McKay and J. D. Payne, [18] [19] with Payne saying of the script in March, "We really want to get back to the sense of exploration and wonder. The kind of optimistic sense of the future that Star Trek has always kind of had at its core. It's the Chicago Bulls in space, in terms of these people who are all awesome at their job." [20] In January 2015, after Orci's departure as director, Simon Pegg and Doug Jung were hired to rewrite the screenplay, [21] with Pegg saying on the previous draft, Paramount "had a script for Star Trek that wasn't really working for them. I think the studio was worried that it might have been a little bit too Star Trek -y." Pegg had been asked to make the new film "more inclusive", stating that the solution was to "make a western or a thriller or a heist movie, then populate that with Star Trek characters so it's more inclusive to an audience that might be a little bit reticent." [22]

Casting [ ]

The first film's major cast members signed on for two sequels as part of their original deals. [23] In 2014, early in the film's development, William Shatner said that he was contacted by producer Abrams to see if he would be interested in a possible role, but as the process continued and the script changed hands, the role never materialized. [24] [25] Alice Eve was not included in the film despite her character having joined the Enterprise crew at the end of the last installment, because Pegg, in writing the script, did not have anything meaningful for her to do; however, he stressed that Eve could appear in a later installment. [26] Joseph Gatt 's cyborg Science Officer 0718 was dropped from the film after a rewrite. [27] In March 2015, Idris Elba was in early talks to play the villain, and he was confirmed for the role in the following months. [28] [29] Pegg noted that the villain would be an original one, rather than a known antagonist from past stories in the Star Trek franchise. [30] In April, Sofia Boutella joined the cast in a lead role, [31] and in early July, Deep Roy was confirmed to reprise his role of Keenser. [32] That month, Joe Taslim was added to the cast opposite Elba's villain, [33] and by August, Lydia Wilson joined as well. [34] In March 2016, Shohreh Aghdashloo was cast as Commodore Paris for reshoots on the film. [35]

Filming [ ]

Principal photography on the film began on June 25, 2015, in Vancouver, [36] and Squamish, British Columbia , after several delays caused by multiple script rejections. [37] [38] [39] [40] Additional filming locations were Seoul , South Korea , and Dubai , United Arab Emirates . [41] [42] Principal filming ended on October 15, 2015. In March 2016, production underwent reshoots, with Aghdashloo added to the cast. [35]

In August 2015, composer Michael Giacchino confirmed that he would return to write the score. [43] On June 26, 2016, singer Rihanna released a teaser across her social media accounts for a single for the film entitled " Sledgehammer ", and the song premiered the following day. The Beastie Boys ' " Sabotage " was used in the movie's trailer, as well as the final battle scene.

Visual effects [ ]

The visual effects are provided by Atomic Fiction, DNEG and Kelvin Optical and Supervised by Kevin Baillie, Ryan Tudhope, Pauline Duvall and Peter Chiang as the Production Supervisor with help from Rodeo FX . [44]

Release [ ]

The film was released in 2D, Real 3D , IMAX 3D and Barco Escape . In August 2014, it was announced that Paramount had pushed back the release of the film to 2016, for the 50th anniversary celebration of the debut of Gene Roddenberry 's original sci-fi series. [45] In December, it was announced that the film was to be released on July 8, 2016. [46] In September 2015, the film's release date was pushed back to July 22, 2016. [47] The film was released in Dolby Cinema format in selected theaters. [48] The film had its Australian premiere in Sydney on July 7. [49]

Marketing [ ]

A teaser trailer for the film was released on December 14, 2015, [50] and was criticized by some fans for focusing too much on action, and for featuring the Beastie Boys song " Sabotage ", which many considered out of place, despite its use in the first film of the rebooted series. Pegg expressed similar thoughts of dissatisfaction with the teaser, saying that he "didn't love it" because "I know there's a lot more to the film." He interpreted the trailer to be a way of the marketing team saying, "Come and see this movie! It's full of action and fun!" [51] A second trailer was released on May 20, 2016, to warmer reviews. [52] A third and final trailer was released on June 27, 2016, featuring Rihanna's single "Sledgehammer".

Home media [ ]

Star Trek Beyond was released on Digital HD on October 4, 2016, [53] and on Ultra HD Blu-ray , Blu-ray and DVD on November 1, 2016. [54]

Reception [ ]

Box office [ ].

Star Trek Beyond underperformed financially at the box office. Scott Mendelson of Forbes observed that one factor contributing to the film's underperformance was its untimely release in a crowded summer in which it was surrounded by other films like Ghostbusters , Jason Bourne and Suicide Squad . He also noted that had Paramount released the film for the Star Trek ' s 50th anniversary on September 8, the film could have benefited from that occasion, as demonstrated in October 2012 when MGM released the James Bond film Skyfall (which went on to gross over $1 billion) [55] for that series' 50th anniversary. [56] [57]

Star Trek Beyond grossed $158.8 million in the United States and Canada and $184.6 million in other countries for a worldwide total of $343.5 million, against a production budget of $185 million. [2] It had a global opening of $89.2 million and an IMAX opening of $11.6 million on 571 IMAX screens. [58] Industry analyst Danny Cox had previously estimated that in order for the film to break even , it would have to earn $340–350 million worldwide, [59] and ended losing an estimated $50.5 million. [60]

North America [ ]

In the United States and Canada, the film was projected to gross $50–60 million from 3,928 theaters in its opening weekend. It opened alongside Ice Age: Collision Course and Lights Out , but critics noted that the film did not face any direct competition with them. [61] [62] It opened across 3,928 theaters, of which 391 were IMAX. [63] It made $5.5 million from Thursday previews from 3,100 theaters, an improvement over its two immediate predecessors. Of that, the film grossed $1.1 million on 387 IMAX screens. This includes revenues generated from Wednesday night, when Paramount screened all Star Trek films, which concluded with a 10pm screening of Beyond . [64] [65] [66] [67] On its opening day, it earned $22.3 million, which is the second-biggest among the franchise, only behind Star Trek ($30.9 million), the third-biggest opening day of the summer for a live-action film and the second-biggest opening day of the year for a non-comic book superhero live-action film, behind only The Jungle Book . [68] It earned $59.3 million in its opening weekend, which is the third-biggest debut among the franchise but the lowest of the reboot series (behind Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness for both). Adjusted for inflation, it ranks fourth behind the aforementioned films and Star Trek: First Contact ($60 million). [69] It performed exceptionally well in IMAX making $8.7 million in 387 IMAX screens. [70] The film came in 14% lower than the opening of its immediate predecessor, Star Trek Into Darkness , but box office experts noted that the fall was mild in comparison to other sequels of 2016 and is still considered a hit. [71] [72] It dropped precipitously by 69% on its second Friday and was overtaken by newcomer spy film Jason Bourne , earning $6.75 million. By comparison, Star Trek dropped 56% on its first Friday while Star Trek into Darkness fell 53%. However, this was not the worst Friday-to-Friday drop for a Star Trek film, as Star Trek: Nemesis plunged 83% on its second Friday due to negative word-of-mouth and heavy competition from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers . [73]

By the second and third weekend following the film's release, box office revenue continued to drop significantly due to the release of competing films like Jason Bourne and Suicide Squad . [74]

Outside North America [ ]

Internationally, the film received a scattered release pattern and was released across approximately 76 markets. [58] [63] It opened in 37 markets in conjunction with its North American release in its first weekend, including in the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia — territories where the franchise has traditionally performed well. It earned a total of $30 million from the said number of markets which is slightly lower than Star Trek Into Darkness ' $31.7 million international debut in 2013. Paramount said that the heatwave in Europe negatively impacted the weekend's results. Beyond debuted at first place in 16 of them and recorded the biggest opening weekend ever for the franchise in 17 markets, including Russia, Taiwan and Thailand. It debuted in third place overall at the international box office, behind Skiptrace and The Legend of Tarzan . [58] Beyond set numerous records in IMAX theaters. Led by very strong results in the UK and Russia, it grossed an estimated weekend of $3.2 million on 184 screens besting Star Trek Into Darkness ' $2.8 million debut. [58] In its second weekend, it fell drastically by 57% earning $13 million. As a result, it slipped into sixth place at the box office. [75] After fluctuating up and down the charts, it finally topped the international box office in its seventh weekend due to a robust debut in China [76] and remained at the top for the second weekend in a row. [77]

The highest international tallies were recorded in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Malta ($6.1 million), South Korea ($5.6 million), Germany ($4.5 million), Russia and the CIS ($3.3 million), Australia ($3 million), France ($2.1 million), Mexico ($1.5 million), Brazil ($1.6 million), Venezuela ($1.4 million) and Taiwan ($1 million). [58] [78] [76] [77] In the United Kingdom, where the performance of the franchise has been consistently solid, it was edged out by the family film The BFG . [58] Its £4.74 million ($6.2 million) opening from 535 theaters is the lowest among the rebooted series and a 31% decline from the £8.43 million ($11 million) opening posted by Star Trek Into Darkness , if previews are deducted. The Guardian cited J. J. Abrams ' departure as the director and fans' unenthusiastic response to Idris Elba as the villain (in comparison to Benedict Cumberbatch in Star Trek Into Darkness ) as some possible reasons why the film failed to generate lucrative revenue. The site also projected a total gross of around £20 million ($26 million+) for the film. [79]

It opened in China on September 2, and earned an estimated $9.30 million on its opening day (representing 66% of the total marketplace), including $370,000 in midnight preview showings which is 160% larger than the opening day of Star Trek Into Darkness [80] and $21.8 million in two days. [81] In total, it had an opening weekend of $31.3 million (per Paramount) and $30.7 million (according to Chinese box office service Ent Group) from 6,259 screens, marking the biggest Star Trek debut in country which is 105% bigger than the opening of Star Trek Into Darkness . [82] [76] [83] It was the only one of five new releases to make any impression on the chart. [83] It remained at the top of the box office for a second weekend by adding another $10.1 million (according to Chinese data provider Ent Group), or $11.37 million (according to Paramount) from 5,830 locations from Friday to Sunday, a steep decline of 62.6% from its previous weekend. [84] [85] [86] It fell out of the top 10 in its third weekend, [87] and has grossed a total of $64.2 million there. [88] It is projected the film will end its run there anywhere around $70–100 million, [89] [90] a disappointing figure considering the robust marketing effort by investors Alibaba Pictures and Huahua Media. Thus, the film is the second Paramount film to underperform in that corner following Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows in July. [86]

In terms of total earnings, its biggest offshore markets are the United Kingdom ($13.3 million), Germany ($8.6 million), Russia and the CIS ($5.5 million) and Australia ($5.2 million). [75] Star Trek Beyond opened in Japan on October 21, where it has earned $4.9 million as of 17 November 2016. [76]

Critical response [ ]

On Rotten Tomatoes , the film has an approval rating of 86% based on 310 reviews, with an average rating of 7.00/10. The website's critical consensus reads, " Star Trek Beyond continues the franchise's post-reboot hot streak with an epic sci-fi adventure that honors the series' sci-fi roots without skimping on the blockbuster action." [91] On Metacritic , the film has a score of 68 out of 100, based on 50 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". [92] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A–" on an A+ to F scale, down from the first two films' "A". [93]

Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film 3 stars out of 4 and said, "Even with its big-screen pyrotechnics and its feature-length running time, Star Trek Beyond plays like an extended version of one of the better episodes from the original series, and I mean that in the best possible way." [94] Scott Collura of IGN awarded the film 8.4/10, describing it as being: "terrific, a fun and exciting entry in the series that balances subtle fan service while also feeling fresh and modern; Star Trek Beyond is the perfect way to celebrate the series’ 50th anniversary." [95] David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter said the screenplay by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung "injects a welcome strain of humor that's true to the original Gene Roddenberry creation, delivering nostalgia without stiff veneration", and went on by saying, "While Beyond won't unseat 1982's thrilling The Wrath of Khan as the gold standard for Star Trek movies, it's a highly entertaining entry guaranteed to give the franchise continuing life." [96] Owen Gleiberman of Variety , in an otherwise positive review, described the film being: "a very familiar, old-fangled, no-mystery structure, and that's because it's basically the Star Trek version of an interplanetary action film, with a plot that doesn't take you to many new frontiers." Furthermore, he called Star Trek Beyond "a somewhat diverting place holder, but one hopes that the next Star Trek movie will have what it takes to boldly go where no Star Trek movie has gone before." [97] Mark Hugues of Forbes said, " Star Trek Beyond is the third-best Star Trek film of all time, creating the sort of emotional connection and familiar, powerful characterizations we loved in the original series while delivering top-notch action and the best Star Trek movie villain since First Contact ' s Borg Queen." [98]

Despite its international success, Star Trek Beyond was met by critics who were less taken with the film. Kyle Smith of the New York Post gave the film 1½ stars out of 4 and he commented that the filmmakers "should have called it Star Trek Into Drowsiness. " Smith later added, " Beyond is tepid when it's trying to be emotional, moronic when it's trying to be thrilling and unfunny when it's trying to be non-unfunny. It lacks a storytelling module: Things just click into place when needed, as when Kirk commands Scotty to rev up a busted old spaceship, Scott says it's impossible, and 14 seconds later everything is ready to rip." [99] James Berardinelli of Reelviews gave 2½ stars out of 4, writing: " Star Trek Beyond is a Star Trek movie, although not an especially good one; The action sequences are frenetic, kinetic, and, at times, incoherent. This isn't unexpected; it's Lin's trademark. But the plot, credited to Simon Pegg & Doug Jung, is pure Trek . Unfortunately, it's also instantly forgettable." [100] Dave Robinson of outlet Crash Landed writes that " Star Trek Beyond fails to push beyond its own roots and becomes just another very safe sci-fi popcorn movie in an increasingly crowded market, that will likely have you leaving the theatre feeling exactly as you entered." [101] Chris Nashawaty of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a C+ and wrote, "[w]ith Beyond , it feels like just another summer tentpole with not enough going on underneath the tent." [102]

:Main article: Development of Star Trek 4

A fourth reboot film has been announced 27 times since the release of Beyond. Pine and Quinto had signed contracts to return as Kirk and Spock for a fourth film should one be made. [118] In July 2016, Abrams confirmed plans for a fourth film and stated that Chris Hemsworth would return as Kirk's father, George, whom he played in the prologue of the first film. [119] [120] Later that month, Paramount confirmed the return of Hemsworth, as well as most of the Beyond cast, producers Abrams and Lindsey Weber, and writers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. [121] That same month, Abrams said that Chekov would not be recast, after Anton Yelchin died in an accident outside his residence in California. [122]

In December 2017, it was revealed that Quentin Tarantino had pitched an idea for a potential Star Trek film to Abrams and Paramount, who were reportedly enthusiastic about the idea. Tarantino was mentioned as a possibility to direct the film if his schedule allowed, and that Abrams and Paramount would attempt to assemble a writers’ room to explore the concept. [123] On December 22, writer Mark L. Smith was hired by Paramount and Bad Robot to write a screenplay based on Tarantino's original pitch, with Tarantino still expected to direct. [124]

In April 2018, it was announced that two new Star Trek films were in development at Paramount. [125] Later that month, it was announced that S. J. Clarkson would direct the second Star Trek film in development, and that the film would enter production before Tarantino's film. J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay would co-write the screenplay, while Abrams and Lindsey Weber would co-produce the project. [126] In August 2018, Pine and Hemsworth walked away from negotiations to star in the film after refusing to take pay cuts as a result of Star Trek Beyond Template:’ s alleged under-performance at the domestic box office. [127] According to Hemsworth, the reason for his exit was because he found the script underwhelming. [128] In January 2019, Paramount reportedly cancelled development of the fourth installment, refusing to offer a comment. [129]

In May 2019, Tarantino confirmed that his Trek film was still in development, saying:

On November 19, 2019, it was reported that Pine had signed-on to return for a fourth installment alongside Quinto, Saldana, Pegg, and Urban, and that Noah Hawley was in talks to write and direct the film. [131] Simon Pegg later stated that he had no knowledge of the reboot cast's return in the film. [132] The following year, it was announced that Hawley's movie had been put on indefinite hold, reportedly by Paramount's new president to get a better handle on how to move the film franchise forward. [133] In late November 2020, it was revealed that the project was cancelled and Hawley left. [134]

In December 2019, it was reported that Tarantino had left his proposed film, looking to make a smaller budget film. [135] [136] In January 2020, Tarantino stated the film "might" be made, but he would not direct it. [137] In March 2021, Star Trek: Discovery writer Kalinda Vazquez was hired by Paramount to pen a new Star Trek film, which is said to be based on an original story. [138] The following month, it was announced that the next installment in the franchise would be released on June 9, 2023, with J.J. Abrams returning to produce; sources at the time reported the 2023 release will not be the Vazquez script. [139] Matt Shakman was hired as the director in July 2021, [140] and the release date has been delayed to December 2023. [141] While no plans were set in stone, Paramount hoped that cast members, including Pine, would return for the film. [142] In February 2022, it was announced that shooting for the film would begin at the end of the year and the cast were in talks to return for the film, including Pine, Quinto, Pegg, Urban, Saldaña, and Cho. Star Trek 101: Everything You Need To Know Before Star Trek Beyond

star trek beyond wiki

This year marks Star Trek 's 50th anniversary. What started as a science fiction primetime program following space exploration a couple years before we'd landed on the Moon, became a pop culture phenomenon spawning other TV shows, movies, books, comics, games and plenty more. There have been some bumps over the years, but the franchise remains a way to not only show off cool action and unique aliens, but also explore interesting social issues and ideas. However, something so large may intimidate newcomers from wanting to partake in the fun. Don't worry, we've got you covered.

This Friday will finally see the release of Star Trek Beyond , the third movie in the reboot series and the 13th movie overall. To celebrate its release and the franchise's huge milestone, we've put together this guide, to go over all the important elements surrounding the franchise, with most of the focus resting on the "Original" characters, both from the '60s and the new versions that are currently on the big screen. Here are all the Star Trek basics you need to know before seeing Star Trek Beyond .

Star Trek Original Series

Star Trek: The Original Series

After creator Gene Roddenberry made two pilots in 1964 and 1965, respectively ("The Cage" and "Where No Man Has Gone Before," both of which eventually aired/made available to the public), Star Trek finally premiered on NBC September 8, 1966. The series followed the Enterprise crew as they went on their five-year mission to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, and to boldly go where no man/no one has gone before. While the sets, effects and even some episodes may not have always been top-notch, the series made its mark by exploring themes and ideas that few TV shows at the time were willing to touch upon.

Star Trek: The Original Series ended in 1969, but it continued to impact viewers in reruns, and that, along with a short-lived animated series, led to the Enterprise crew reuniting in 1978's Star Trek: The Motion Picture . Five more movies followed, concluding with 1991's Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country . That was the last time the original Enterprise crew were together, though all of the main characters, with the exception of Uhura, guest starred on one of the later TV shows and/or briefly appeared in the 1994 movie Star Trek: Generations .

James Kirk

William Shatner will always be best remembered for playing James T. Kirk for nearly three full decades, but for the reboot movies, Chris Pine has taken over as the captain of the Enterprise. His childhood may have been different thanks to the events of the 2009 movie (we'll get to that later), but at his core, the alternate timeline's Kirk is still the same as he was in the Prime Universe. He's cocky (becoming Starfleet's youngest captain no doubt boosted this), he's headstrong and he frequently thinks outside the box when solving problems. He's also notorious for breaking regulations, and if it were any other officer, they would have been sacked long ago. Fortunately, Kirk gets results, and while he has faced consequences for his actions on some occasions, the status quo usually reverts to normal.

Spock

In contrast with James Kirk, Spock , the Enterprise's First Officer, is driven by logic and following the rules. That's not surpassing since he's half Vulcan, a race that pushes down their emotions in favor of experiencing life more practically... most of the time. Leonard Nimoy played Spock in the series (he was the only character from "The Cage" pilot to remain a series regular), and later, six movies and two Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes, while Zachary Quinto is now officially the new Spock. Nimoy also reprised his version of Spock in Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness . One difference between the original and new version of Spock is that the new movies have arguably placed more emphasis on his human side. He's in a relationship with fellow crew member Nyota Uhura, and during moments of great loss or pain, he's succumbed to anger and sadness.

Leonard McCoy

Leonard McCoy

The third leading man in the Star Trek cast (at least by Original Series standards) is Dr. Leonard McCoy, the Enterprise's Chief Medical Officer who was first portrayed by DeForrest Kelley, but is now brought to life by Karl Urban . He's also known as "Bones," a nickname which was originally shortened from "sawbones," an archaic term for surgeons, but in the new movies was attributed to his ex-wife leaving him "nothing but his bones" in the divorce. Kirk and McCoy have been close friends for years, to the point that they're basically brothers. However, while he and Spock are also friends, McCoy is frequently frustrated by the Vulcan's detached nature, which wildly contrasts with his own passionate personality. Regardless, McCoy has demonstrated many times that he has an excellent understanding on anatomy, both human and many alien races. Just don't forget that he's a doctor, not a fill in the blank .

Scotty Uhura Sulu Chekov

The Other Main Crew Members

The Enterprise is full of hundreds of crew members, but for viewers, there are four other characters who round out Star Trek 's main cast. First, there's Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott, a.k.a. Scotty, originally played by James Doohan and now played by Simon Pegg . You can always count on Scotty to be jovial (and in Pegg's version's case, more comical) and to give the Enterprise gives everything she's got when flying.

Second, there's helmsman Hikaru Sulu , originally played by George Takei and now played by John Cho . In addition to his position on the bridge, Sulu is also quite athletic and a talented swordsman. Third, there's Communications Officer Nyota Uhura, originally played by Nichelle Nichols and now played by Zoe Saldana . Her main duties are manning the comm and translating alien languages, and in the new movies, she has also been romantically involved with Spock. Finally, we have Pavel Chekov, who, in the Original Series, wasn't introduced until Season 2. Walter Koenig originally occupied the role, and he was played in the reboot movies by the late Anton Yelchin . Aside from being the navigator, Chekov is best remembered for his distinctive Russian accent.

Starfleet

In the Star Trek universe, humanity achieved warp flight technology in the mid-21st century, thus kicking off a new era for Earth. By the 22nd century, Starfleet had been established, though the first iteration was only connected to Earth, while the later, more notable one is an arm of the United Federation of Planets. The scientific organization's goals are benevolent: exploring the galaxy, studying other kinds of life and culture, going on diplomatic missions, etc. Although Starfleet's personnel are peacekeepers and don't want to do harm (with some exceptions), their ships are armed with weapons in case they need to defend themselves, allies or innocents being targeted. Of course, not every being looks at Starfleet as a force for good. There are some who would love nothing more than for it to be eliminated. The latest individual to try to accomplish that is Star Trek Beyond 's antagonist Krall .

Prime Directive

The Prime Directive

As mentioned in the previous section, Starfleet sends its ships out to explore the galaxy. Often times they'll run into other advanced alien races, but sometimes, they'll discover a world still stuck in a primitive state. When that happens, the crew of that ship must follow the Prime Directive, i.e. they are not allowed to interfere with the natural development of a civilization. The idea is that rather than Starfleet impose their own values by providing advanced technology, these races need to develop on their own. Of course, as longtime Star Trek fans know, the Prime Directive has been frequently broken, whether accidentally or on purpose. The most recent example of the latter was when Kirk and the Enterprise prevented a volcano from destroying all life on a primitive planet in Star Trek Into Darkness . Consequently, the Enterprise was seen by the natives (seen above), and the ship was looked at by them as a god.

The Prime Directive also applies to advanced worlds, like not getting involved in internal political matters or staying away if the leaders of a society doesn't want Starfleet around. There is also a Temporal Prime Directive established centuries in the future from the main Star Trek eras, which explicitly commands time travelers from changing events in the past.

Enterprise

The Enterprise

You can't think of Star Trek without thinking its most famous ship, the USS Enterprise, a.k.a. NCC-1701. Within the universe's chronology, The Original Series' Enterprise was the first to bear that name, but for TV viewers, it will always be the starship that kicked off the whole shebang. As with other ships in Starfleet, the Enterprise travels across the galaxy with its warp drive, and is armed just enough to make it a formidable threat in anyone picks a fight with the crew. The Original Series Enterprise was destroyed in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock , and by Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , it was succeeded by the Enterprise-A. Four more Enterprise ships would be created over the next century, with the latter two being manned by the Next Generation characters.

Vulcan

Humanity has made many alliances with alien races in the Star Trek universe, and chief among them are the Vulcans. They were nearby when Zefram Cochrane made the first warp flight, and seeing that humanity was ready to get involved with the rest of the galaxy, they publicly presented themselves to us, i.e. made first contact. The primary Vulcan physical feature are their pointed ears, though if they bleed, you'll notice blood is green. Vulcans are also capable of contact telepathy, like "mind melding" with someone else or passing their "katra" to someone else to essentially cheat death. They are also excellent fighters whenever non-violence isn't an option, with the "Vulcan neck pinch" being their trademark move to incapacitate someone.

As mentioned earlier when discussing Spock, the Vulcans prefer to have logic dictate their actions rather than emotions, as the latter nearly drove their ancestors insane. Most Vulcans are able to suppress their emotions on their own, but the best students also complete the Kolinahr ritual, which would completely purge all emotion. Every seven years, a Vulcan must also submit to pon farr, where a hormone imbalance forces them to mate with someone in order to properly deal with the effects, though other methods have also been used to treat it.

Star Trek villains

Classic Star Trek Villains

We could spend hours discussing the greatest Star Trek villains over the TV shows and movies, so for this feature, we're providing a brief rundown of the best adversaries the original Star Trek characters have face over the years. Chief among them are the Klingons, a warrior race who love battle, but also cherish honor. They are primarily recognizable by their brown skin, sharp teeth and, for many of their population, forehead ridges (seen above). There are also the Romulans, who look almost identical to the Vulcans. The Romulans descended from Vulcan ancestors who refused to suppress their emotions. So while the Vulcans are primarily nonviolent and use logic to dictate their actions, the Romulans are emotional and love nothing more than conquest and exerting their power.

Other villains who the Original Series characters faced include Khan Noonien Singh , Gary Mitchell, the Tholians, the Mirror Universe counterparts, etc. The list of Star Trek enemies gets even bigger when you account for the folks introduced in the Next Generation era, like the Borg, Cardassians and Q. So if you're eager to join Starfleet and travel the galaxy, just know there quite a few individuals, groups and races who will want to hurt you badly.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

The Other TV Shows

Star Trek: The Original Series may have begun this entire craze, but the franchise wouldn't have stayed alive for as long as it has without the other TV shows. Following the first four theatrical movies, Star Trek: The Next Generation began airing in 1987. The series followed Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Enterprise-D (seen above) on the same mission of exploration nearly 100 years after the events of the Original Series . After that series concluded in 1994, those characters' story continued in four movies, the last being 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis .

In 1993, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was added to the slate. Unlike the other shows, this took place on a space station, and was notable for being darker and having more of an ongoing storyline. Star Trek: Voyager hit the airwaves in 1995, and it literally distanced itself from the other shows by stranding the crew of the eponymous ship in the Delta Quadrant. Finally, Star Trek: Enterprise aired from 2001-2005, and follow the first starship Enterprise (dubbed NX-01) as they explored the galaxy 100 years before The Original Series .

Next year, CBS will air a new Star Trek TV series exclusively on their All Access streaming service, though the pilot will be shown on the actual channel. Few details have been released about the new show, but it will reportedly take place between the Original Series and Next Generation eras, and will also feel more like an anthology series.

Star Trek Into Darkness

The Events Of The Previous Reboot Movies

The Star Trek franchise has frequently explored other timelines, but it was the 2009 Star Trek movie that gave fans their most important alternate reality yet. In the Prime Universe (a.k.a. the original continuity), Leonard Nimoy's Spock attempted to destroy a supernova that was nearing the planet Romulus by creating a black hole using red matter. His attempt failed, and he was sucked through the black hole and was transported back in time to when the main Star Trek characters were active. Unfortunately, a Romulan named Nero and his followers were also sucked in by the black hole. They arrived about 20 years earlier than Spock, and they were pissed that their loved ones were dead.

These events kicked off the changes in this new timeline, namely with Kirk's dad dying on the Kelvin (the Starfleet ship that discovered Nero coming through the temporal portal) and Vulcan (the planet) being destroyed by Nero as revenge for losing Romulus. Still, the original crew managed to meet each other and defeat Nero together, and by the end of the movie, they were off on their way to explore the galaxy together.

2013's Star Trek Into Darkness picked up a few years later when a new villain appeared seemingly out of nowhere to destroy Starfleet. This man was originally called John Harrison, but it was revealed halfway through the movie (even though some fans had already guessed correctly) that he was really Khan Noonien Singh, who the "Prime" Enterprise crew had fought in the Original Series episode "Space Seed" and the movie Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan . Just Ricardo Montalbán's version, Benedict Cumberbatch 's Khan was a superhuman, both physically and mentally. His actions even led to Kirk temporarily dying, though the captain was later revived. Spock was eventually able to incapacitate Khan and put him back in stasis, and one year after the movie's events, the Enterprise crew began their infamous five year mission. Star Trek Beyond will reunite with the crew approximately halfway through this endeavor.

"There's no relative direction in the vastness of space," a Starfleet high mucky-muck tells  Enterprise  Captain James T. Kirk ( Chris Pine ) in "Star Trek Beyond." "There's only you." She's asking him whether he wants to give up his captain's seat for a chance at a powerful desk job on the eve of his thirtieth birthday, a year younger than his father was when he died. Her language is meant to spur Kirk to look inward, and for a moment we might hope that he will, and that the film will look inward with him.

There's a precedent for this sort of thing. Where all of the TV incarnations of " Star Trek " were mainly about morality and philosophy, with characterization serving as a means of examining those dramatic values, most of the big-screen film versions, including the '80s and '90s versions of the flagship TV show, were mainly concerned with the heroes' personalities. The screenplays gave us detailed examinations of, say, the relationship between Kirk and his half-Vulcan first officer Mr. Spock, between Kirk and the United Federation of Planets, between Kirk and the Klingons who tormented his civilization and killed his only son, and between all the characters (Kirk especially) and the prospect of aging and death. It was more soap opera than space opera at times, but always fun to watch, sometimes moving.

What undermines "Star Trek Beyond" is that it's ultimately not interested in taking a long look at the "you" of Kirk, Spock ( Zachary Quinto ), ship's doctor "Bones" McCoy ( Karl Urban ), communications officer Uhura ( Zoe Saldana ), and the rest of the NCC-1701 crew. Sure, it nods in that direction. Even the worst "Star Trek" stories do. But in the end it's mostly a good big-budget sci-fi action movie that's been marinated in "Star Trek" flavor packets—and thus not terribly different from the 2009 "Star Trek" reboot or its sequel, " Star Trek Into Darkness ."

"Star Trek Beyond" pits the crew of the  Enterprise  against another bellowing megalomaniac ( Idris Elba ) who wants to punish the United Federation of Planets for its perceived sins. It's the best of the new "Trek" films, but it's still an unsatisfying effort if you want "Star Trek" to be something more than a military-minded outer space action flick, with familiar, beloved characters shoehorned into a standard mix of martial arts slugfests, close-quarters firefights, and scenes of starships and cities being shredded and burned. Advance publicity hyped "Star Trek Beyond" as a return to the original series' roots as a showcase for a bunch of eccentric personalities traveling the galaxy, ingeniously solving problems, and indulging in populist philosophizing about civilization and the frontier as they went along. But that's not what we get here—not really.

Yes, there's a promising setup (the  Enterprise  crew is held hostage by a vicious bad guy who rules a backwater planet a la Kurtz in "Heart of Darkness"). And there are suggestions of classic "Star Trek" style action-plus-characterization-plus-cleverness, and pleasing performances by a cast that has settled into each others' rhythms, as a real-world naval crew would after years of sailing together.

But the movie never delivers on its considerable promise because it's always in such a hurry to get to the next action scene. And aside from three magnificent setpieces—the first, crippling sneak attack by a fleet of tiny ships that swarm the  Enterprise  like explosive bees, and two vertigo-inducing chase-and-fight scenes in which geography goes all M.C. Escher on us—the action is not good enough to be the film's main course. Lin, who proved in the "Fast and Furious" series that he could do great or near-great action, here substitutes wobbly camerawork, chop-chop editing and rumbling sound effects for suspense and a sense of spatial design. It's a step up from the action in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" movies, but that's not the sort of thing one should brag about. A climactic reprise of a certain overused Beastie Boys song might be the franchise's low point, rivaled only by the laughable credits sequence of "Star Trek V," which cut from a helicopter shot of a lean young stuntman scaling a craggy peak in the Pyrenees to a close-up of the 57-year-old star/director Shatner's meaty hand in a studio, gripping a fiberglas "rock."

Simon Pegg and Doug Jung's screenplay provides the right amount of homage (as when Kirk grumbles after an opening action scene that he ripped his shirt again), plus Spock/McCoy odd-couple banter and some marvelous, character-based laugh lines (Scotty demands that Kirk give an opinion on one of his engineering improvisations, because "if I mess it up, I don't want it to be just my fault"). There's psychological nuance, irony, even a political subtext (Elba's character, Krall, a reptilian Che Guevara-type who wants the galaxy's "frontier" to "push back" against the Federation's expansionism). Too bad none of these aspects are filled out with the detail they deserve. Krail's fire-and-brimstone sermonizing is turned to nonsense by a pointless and self-defeating third act "twist"—like we need another one of those after the boneheaded fan service of "Darkness"!—and there are points late in the film where "Star Trek Beyond" seems jolted by the sudden remembrance of things that it told us it was going to deal with but didn't.

Uhura spends most of the movie in a prison camp. Kirk, Spock and even McCoy have human moments, but they spend too much of their screen time sprinting through hallways, firing phaser pistols, and piloting spaceships while yelling and grimacing in tight closeup, like the heroes of every other science fiction-flavored action movie projected in theaters recently. Krall and other characters allude to the Federation's fake-benevolent brand of imperialism, but unless you're familiar with examples from elsewhere in the "Star Trek" universe or got briefed by a super-fan before buying a ticket, you'll leave with no sense of whether the villains' grievances are legitimate, much less if you're supposed to feel mixed emotions at Kirk's inevitable triumph.

Spock, whose home planet was destroyed by a renegade Romulan warlord in the first movie, suffers most from the filmmakers' preoccupation with  pew-pew-pew! a ction-adventure. For three movies now, Spock's been carrying a crushing load of survivor's guilt. The character's barely disguised Jewishness, brilliantly articulated by the late Leonard Nimoy in the original TV and movie series, is more pronounced in the new franchise: he's been turned into a holocaust survivor, part of a fragile Vulcan diaspora haunted by genocide. But the scripts seem scared of treating Spock's predicament with the seriousness it deserves, much less daring to put it at the center of a film. Here it's treated mainly as an explanation for why Spock can't seem to keep a relationship going with Uhura. The death of Leonard Nimoy is integrated into the story by having Vulcan diplomats inform Spock of the death of Ambassador Spock, an alternate-universe incarnation of the character who dispensed advice and plot points to new Spock whenever the screenwriters painted themselves into a corner. The film's method of mourning Nimoy's Spock makes the Spockus ex machina  thing worse. New Spock mourns classic Spock as if the two were dear friends who had dinner every Monday at the same Chinese restaurant.

The missteps of writing and direction are more depressing when you consider the excellence of the core cast. Quinto and Saldana give the Spock-Uhura relationship and their own spotlight moments a lot more than the film gives them. Pegg is a hoot as Scotty, colorful but never hammy, though we may justifiably raise a Spock-like eyebrow at all the times that the actor-screenwriter lets his character save the day. Pine's Kirk seems to be morphing seamlessly into Shatner's, complete with surprising pauses and intonations, but he's more credible as a strong, respected leader; watch how the actor grows more calm and friendly whenever Kirk's bridge crew is becoming more agitated. Elba is such a strong presence throughout, even near the end, that it's a shame Krall is never granted the depth and complexity that his character keeps threatening to disclose.

At this point it's worth asking what, if anything, this franchise is good for besides generating cash for Paramount and its above-the-line talent. Everything that made the original TV series and its follow-ups, small- and big-screen, seem so open-hearted, intelligent and playful is marginalized to make room for hyperactively edited action scenes and displays of hardware and production design. These are technically state-of-the-art but ultimately not all that different from what you see in most other CGI-driven action pictures, superhero as well as sci-fi—long, loud spectacles that are filled with people fighting, blowing up cities and planets, and crashing things into other things, instead of finding some other, more surprising way to move the plot along. What's the point of giving up pleasures that the "Star Trek" franchise is good at providing, to make more room for pleasures that most big-budget science fiction and fantasy already give us, month after month and year after year? Why boldly go where everyone else is already going?

Three years into its five year mission, the USS Enterprise arrives at Starbase Yorktown , a massive space station, for resupply and shore leave for her crew. Struggling to find continued meaning in the endless nature of their mission of exploration, Captain James Kirk has applied for a promotion to Vice Admiral and commanding officer of Yorktown . He recommends Spock as the new captain of the Enterprise . Meanwhile, Hikaru Sulu reunites with his family, Montgomery Scott works to keep the ship operational, and Spock and Nyota Uhura amicably end their relationship; Spock also receives word from New Vulcan that Ambassador Spock (Spock's future self from the original timeline) has died.

The Enterprise is dispatched on a rescue mission at short notice after an escape pod drifts out of a nearby uncharted nebula. The survivor, Kalara, claims her ship is stranded on Altamid, a planet within the nebula. The rescue turns into an ambush when the Enterprise is quickly torn apart by a massive swarm of small ships. Krall and his crew board the ship, and unsuccessfully search for a relic called an Abronath that Kirk had obtained for a failed diplomatic mission. Krall captures and removes many crew members from the ship. Kirk then orders the crew to abandon ship as the Enterprise 's saucer section hurtles towards the planet.

On the planet's surface, Sulu, Uhura, and other survivors are captured by Krall. Kirk and navigator Pavel Chekov, accompanied by Kalara, locate the wrecked saucer section. Kalara is discovered to be Krall's ally when she tries to retrieve the Abronath. To escape Krall's soldiers, Kirk activates the still-functional thrusters, causing the saucer to lurch forward, crushing Kalara. Meanwhile, a wounded Spock and Dr. Leonard McCoy search for other survivors. Spock confides to McCoy that he intends to leave Starfleet to continue the late Ambassador Spock's work on New Vulcan. Meanwhile, Scott is rescued by Jaylah, a scavenger who previously escaped Krall's encampment. She takes Scott to her makeshift home, the grounded USS Franklin , an early Starfleet vessel reported missing over a century earlier. Scott is reunited with Kirk, Chekov, McCoy, and Spock. Using the ship as a base, they plot to raid Krall's camp and transport the crew to the Franklin , then escape the planet in the repaired ship. Meanwhile, Krall coerces Ensign Syl to hand over the Abronath that she had kept hidden for Kirk. The Abronath is the missing half of an ancient bioweapon, created by the planet's original inhabitants which can disintegrate any humanoid. With the device complete, Krall intends to attack Yorktown and kill its inhabitants, and using its advanced technology, go on to attack the Federation. Kirk and the others free the crew as Krall launches into space with the bioweapon, leading his drone fleet to Yorktown .

The Starfleet crew pursues Krall in the Franklin . Scott transports Spock and McCoy into one of Krall's drone ships. After dispatching the pilot, they learn that VHF transmissions can disrupt Krall's communications. Matching the drone fleets frequency and using the 'classical' song "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys, they destroy almost the entire fleet. Krall and his three surviving ships crash in Yorktown . As Krall flees into the city, Uhura and Kirk discover from the Franklin 's logs that 'Krall' is actually Balthazar Edison, the former captain of the Franklin . A pre-Federation human soldier, Edison became disillusioned with the newly founded Federation, rejecting its principles of unity and cooperation with former enemies. When he and his crew were stranded on Altamid by a rogue wormhole, he believed the Federation had deliberately abandoned them. The three survivors prolonged their lives with the technology of the planet's extinct natives (at the cost of their human physiology and their numerous victim's lives), and repurposed that species' dormant drone workers into the swarm. Krall now plans to destroy the Federation and resume galactic conflict. Kirk pursues Krall into Yorktown's ventilation system, where Krall activates the bioweapon. Before it can be unleashed, Kirk ejects the weapon and Krall into space. Spock and McCoy save Kirk moments before he is also blown into open space.

Kirk decides to remain as a captain and Spock chooses to stay in Starfleet and resumes his relationship with Uhura. Jaylah is accepted into Starfleet Academy based on Kirk's recommendation. As the crew celebrates Kirk's birthday, they view the construction of their new ship, USS Enterprise -A, and after its completion, they depart on their next mission.
