The Gold Coast has a fantastic subtropical climate, making it great to visit throughout the year! It never gets too hot or too cold. This means your Gold Coast itinerary can be put to use at any time of the year!

If you’re struggling to decide when to visit Gold Coast, keep in mind that the city’s peak season is during autumn (June to August) and winter (September to October). However, the crowds never get too big!

Because it grows very hot during summer days, many tourists avoid visiting during this time. But if you like the heat, and prefer to travel to Gold Coast when prices drop, we recommend a summer trip! Just keep in mind that Australia’s rainy season is in the hot months, so don’t expect as many sunny days as the other seasons.

The Gold Coast is a metropolitan region south of Brisbane on Australia’s east coast. There are some very distinct areas, towns and neighborhoods on offer.

One of the Gold Coast’s best neighborhoods is the famous Surfers Paradise. This is the perfect place to stay if you want to be where the action is! It’s a party neighborhood filled with locals and tourists having a great time.

So if you want to check out the Gold Coast’s nightlife, Surfers Paradise is ideal! As you might have guessed, it’s also right on the coast, so you can step out and onto the beach with ease!

Another great neighborhood, and certainly lesser-known, is Coolangatta. You’ll find a couple of cool backpacker hostels in Coolangatta too if you want to stay overnight. This southern suburb has a much more relaxed vibe, and some charming cafes and natural oases! It’s surprisingly close to the airport, and it just has such a fantastic atmosphere! The perfect place to stay if you prefer to rub shoulders with the locals.

If you’re visiting on a budget, we’d recommend staying at one of the Gold Coast’s best hostels . That’ll keep the accommodation costs low but you’ll be able to meet like-minded travellers from all over the world and enjoy a comfy bed.

Best Hostel in Gold Coast – BUNK Surfers Paradise

A 100m walk from the beach, BUNK is such a fun place to be. The dorm rooms (mixed and female only) are bright and comfortable. The location is perfect, and a free breakfast is provided daily, so you can set out strong! The common room is a great place to meet people, and the pool is brilliant.

Best Airbnb in Gold Coast – Studio close to beach

You really can’t stay any closer to Broadbeach than in this apartment. The studio, which is part of a resort, is ideally located in the main central area. You can walk to all of Broadbeach’s attraction in under 3min. Very clean and modern, the inside of this Airbnb is going to make you feel very comfortable. The pool and Spa are free to use.

Best Budget Hotel in Gold Coast – Palm Beach Hotel

Looking for a comfortable and clean hotel near the beach and some great cafes? This little hotel has fantastically friendly staff, great rooms, and an on-site restaurant serving local cuisine. The lounge, parking, and laundry facilities are a great plus, and make it ideal for people doing an Australian road trip!

Best Luxury Hotel in Gold Coast – Meriton Suites Broadbeach

Meriton Suites offers perfect class and luxury! The facilities include a sauna, indoor pool, and fitness center. Studios and suites are beautifully decorated and luxuriously comfortable. The staff are wonderful, and everything is provided! It’s also right by the beach, the best place to stay in Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast is a big area so you won’t be able or willing to walk from one end to another!!!!! Fortunately, the public transport system is highly developed. You’ll find a train, tram or bus going across the region.

The rail system has recently been upgraded, so it’s one of your best options. The busses are also great but expect some delays, especially during the busiest times of the day.

Another great option is cycling! You may not be able to reach the other side of Coast but you will be able to get between all of the great places on the Gold Coast ! None of them are too far away from each other, and in fact, many lie along the coast. These stops you can walk between, or rent a bicycle for the day and get around that way.

There are both ordinary taxis and water taxis available to get you where you need to go! The Gold Coast’s waterways are pretty extensive, so a ferry or water taxi can take you a long way. Touring Gold Coast is also a lot of fun this way.

Day 1 / Stop 1 – Walk to Snapper Rocks

• Why it’s awesome: A famous place to watch some of the world’s best surfers at work
• Food nearby: Enjoy a very tasty breakfast at the laid-back Cafe Dbar

Start your day off with a walk to the beach! This rocky outcrop is a super famous surf break. You can watch some fantastic surfers carving the waves all along the Superbank!

It’s a beautiful place to stroll along and look out over the beautiful coastline. You can see for miles down the massive sandbank that continues on from this point! Go for a dip in the rock pools and dry off in the sun!

The waves are powerful and crystal clear – it’s the perfect introduction to Gold Coast’s gorgeous beaches!

Insider Tip: If you’re an early waker, be sure to catch the sunset here, at one of the most impressive viewpoints in Australia!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – Take a Thrilling Ride at Dream World

• Why it’s awesome: It’s great fun with options for everyone
• Cost: $58 USD, or $61 USD for 3-day access to Dreamworld and Whitewater World
• Food nearby: Dream World has plenty of restaurants and cafes. Grab some churros from the stand, or get pizza at Dough Bros. Pizzeria!

Your next stop is the Gold Coast’s largest and most popular theme park! The immense park has an incredible range of thrill rides and family rides to keep you entertained for a good half of the day.

Whether you enjoy rides so crazy that you can hear the screams from across the park or something a little more relaxed like the Rocky Hollow Log Ride – there’s something exciting to keep everyone entertained!

This stop is a big favorite for families and groups, but any kind of traveler will leave with great memories and a heart that needs a little chill time.

There are also daily shows and events taking place at Dream World, so check out their lineup!

Insider Tip: We suggest you spend about 4 hours at the theme park! This will give you enough time to enjoy it to the fullest but still fit in all your other Gold Coast itinerary activities.

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Relax on Gold Coast Beach

• Why it’s awesome: There’s nothing like some tan, chill and swim time at this gorgeous beach
• Food nearby: Grab an ice cream from the market located just off the beach

You can’t come to the Gold Coast without spending at least some of your time on the beaches! Take a break from all the activity after a few hours at Dreamworld, and relax on the beach.

This is such a beautiful beach, stretching on for ages. Lather on the sunscreen and buy ice cream! This is full-blown chilling time. The sun is strong, and the sand underfoot is white, clean and soft. This is what holidays are made for!

After heating up in the sun, take a dip in the ocean, and enjoy some people-watching! It doesn’t often get overcrowded, but there are enough interesting people to make it more interesting.

You can finish off the day by going on a scenic and relaxing Gold Coast Sunset Cruise . The cruise starts late afternoon with some exquisite antipasto plates before you explore Gold Coast Broadwater and Surfers Paradise. A knowledgeable guide will accompany you down the waterways and past celebrity mansions as golden light bathes this beautiful city. All you do is sit back, drink wine and enjoy the view.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – Surf at Surfers Paradise

• Why it’s awesome: This is one of the best surf destinations in the world! You simply can’t miss it
• Cost: $37+ USD/lesson
• Food nearby: Enjoy a late lunch at Rhapsody Beachside

We’ve already raved about the surfing here in Gold Coast. As the name suggests, this place is a surfers paradise! So, take a surf lesson, and see what all the fuss is about!

You can also elect to be picked up for your surf lesson at Surfers Paradise and enjoy free transportation to Spit beach, which has gentler waves for first-timers. You can join a group class of 2 hours, and learn all the basics before catching your first wave! Then, head back to Surfers Paradise (transport is free with the lesson) where the waves are so long and impressive, there’s enough space for everyone and you won’t get a fist shook at you from some grumbling surfer. It’s free real estate!

You can also get a private class to get some personal attention. This is the best way to do it if you really want to learn the skills and put them into practice for the rest of your Australian vacation!

Another great option – and an obvious one to all of you already know how to surf – is to simply rent a board. The water is pretty warm, so if you want to go the cheapest route you can forego a wetsuit and tackle it in your swimsuit! Board rentals are available on all of Gold Coast’s beaches, and you’ll certainly find one here on Surfers Paradise.

Day 1 / Stop 5 – Cycle Along the Coast

• Why it’s awesome: You can take in the full coastline and get a little exercise in!
• Cost: $17 USD – $24 USD
• Food nearby: Have dinner at the lively Alfresco Italian Restaurant

Get those legs working as you explore the length of Gold Coast’s iconic coastline! Cycling is the best way to see everything at a good pace. You’ll get so much more ground covered than on foot, but you’ll still be able to stop at every interesting spot and take the sightseeing slowly.

It’s a perfect compromise between fast and slow travel, and the best way to tick off the best places to visit in Gold Coast!

The fantastic part about cycling along the Gold Coast is that you don’t have to stick to bike paths. You can – and there are lots to explore there. But you can also take to the beach!

The bikes available for rent are fat-tire bicycles that allow you to cycle right along the water’s edge. It’s a totally different experience and one you can experience in few places in the world!

You can also rent an e-bike if you don’t want to do all the peddling! This makes it a great option for all fitness levels and types of travelers.

Insider Tip: You can rent a bike for this stop, or you can rent one for the full day and use it as your transport between stops! Even using it for your full 3 day itinerary in Gold Coast, it will end up being the most fun and the cheapest option.

Day 1 / Stop 6 – Browse Nightquarter Markets

• Why it’s awesome: It’s a vibrant, busy market with loads on offer
• Cost: $3 USD entry, children under 12 free
• Food nearby: There are so many stalls with every kind of food! Try the calamari stall, or get ice cream sandwiches

If you’re spending the weekend in Gold Coast, Nightquarter is a must! This night market is the ultimate entertainment, with award-winning food and so much more on offer than the usual market experience.

Always evolving, this weekend market has some incredible live music, a huge range of exciting cuisines, vibrant stores and shipping container boutiques. It’s a very unique place, loud, busy and full of life.

Spend your evening walking among the stalls and finding interesting tidbits. Eat street food while you walk, and stop to watch the musicians, street performers and buskers! There are string lights above everything, making it look otherworldly.

If you’re looking for a great night out, bring your friends and your enthusiasm and make this the first stop of the night! There’s an extra paid area with top Australian performers on every weekend. You can spend the night here or enjoy a few drinks while listening to the music before you go out dancing or bar-hopping!

Day 1 / Stop 7 – Go Dancing at The Avenue

• Why it’s awesome: Dance all night at this lively, popular club
• Food nearby: The club itself has some great hearty meals that will line your stomach!

This final Gold Coast itinerary stop for day 1 is for the partiers! You may want to head to bed and crash after the Nightquarter, or, you might want to find out how the Gold Coasters like to spend their nights.

A bright and busy venue with regular live performances, The Avenue in Surfers Paradise is a fantastic dancing destination! If you’re in town on a Thursday, don’t miss their drag queen show! It’s legendary, and such absolute fun.

What you get depends on the night – there are comedy nights and drag nights, live music and DJs. But always great music pumping until 3am, and fantastic food at great prices. You simply can’t go wrong, whether you decide to make this one of the night’s stops or the whole event!

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Go for a Hike in Nerang National Park

• Why it’s awesome: It’s a beautiful bit of nature just outside the city!
• Food nearby: Find some healthy food at Cadence Cafe

On the second of your 2 days in the Gold Coast, leave the city behind and set out early to visit the exquisitely beautiful Nerang National Park! It’s a lovely place to enjoy a morning hike and see if you can spot some of Australia’s unusual wildlife!

The protected area is known for a large variety of birds and fantastic trails. The views are brilliant, and you’re surrounded by gorgeous indigenous nature. The forest habitat is home to many animals. Hike up and down the rolling hills, or follow the creek!

We suggest you bring a picnic along to enjoy in this natural oasis. You can also go horse riding here, for a very different and wonderful experience! Or bring your rented bike here and have some fast-riding fun on the trails.

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Go Kayaking

• Why it’s awesome: You can experience the gorgeous coastline in a totally different way!
• Cost: $24 USD rental, $34 USD tour
• Food nearby: For great Australian pub fare, eat out at The Glenelg Public House

Rent a kayak or join a tour to experience the Gold Coast coastline in a unique and exciting way! The crystal clear waters make for an ideal kayaking destination, and you may even spot some marine life.

If you are a bit wary of the Australian ocean, you can also kayak through the Gold Coast’s natural waterways. In fact, you may find this an even greater adventure! You pass by such impressive vegetation and diverse landscapes while navigating the calm waters.

If you’re more interested in the ocean, we do suggest you join a tour! There are short options where you’ll see the best of the bays. Perhaps most importantly, your safety in a group is guaranteed, as they know where to set off and provide all equipment and assistance!

If you really want to get out into the deep ocean and explore the waters, you can also charter a yacht from several destinations along the Gold Coast. This is a more luxurious way of exploring the waters, but split between six to eight people, it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg.

Day 2 / Stop 3 – Explore Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

• Why it’s awesome: It’s the perfect opportunity to see Australia’s unique wildlife!
• Cost: $34 USD
• Food nearby: Enjoy some casual outdoor eating at Currumbin Sanctuary Market

Wondering what to do in Gold Coast for animal lovers? This phenomenal wildlife sanctuary is by far the best way to spot some of Australia’s indigenous wildlife! Explore over 27 hectares of rainforest. Most of the animal enclosures are open to visits, so you can stroll around with them, cuddling koalas and feeding kangaroos!

Join a guide on a tour to learn all about the marsupials and mammals unique to the area while you’re meeting them! There are also shows available – like the free-flight show, and aboriginal dances!

Meet koalas and kangaroos, crocs and dingbats. See things you didn’t even know about, and make some new furry friends! You can even stop by at the wildlife hospital and see the good work the vets are doing there.

80% of animals indigenous to Australia can only be found here! That is a crazy number, and it means you simply have to dedicate some time to seeing them while you’re here.

Insider Tip: We suggest you spend about 3 hours here – this will give you time to see everything, without taking too much time out of your full day!

Day 2 / Stop 4 – Enjoy Incredible Views at SkyPoint Climb

• Why it’s awesome: You’ll get to see the Gold Coast sunset from up high!
• Cost: $12 USD
• Food nearby: Pop into the Skypoint Bistro and Bar for a burger and a pint

For unparalleled views of the Gold Coast at sunset, go to Australia’s one and only beachside observation deck! You’ll enjoy 360° views of the gorgeous coastline and the city, and see all the Gold Coast points of interest.

This isn’t a window in a building – it’s a 90-minute experience that takes you atop the building! You’ll clip in, get a quick safety go-over, and then make the trek from the top floor, the observation deck. It’s a great bit of fun!

We’ve set up your Gold Coast itinerary so that you’ll be here just as the sun is setting! Watch the sky change color while everything glows in golds and pinks! It’s a wonderful way to end your daytime adventures, and maybe get a few fun photos to upload to the gram.

Skypoint is located on top of the Q1 building – one of the tallest residential towers in the world! It’s the highest point in the Gold Coast. You’ll definitely have seen it on your Gold Coast adventures.

Day 2 / Stop 5 – Have a Tasty Treat at Miami Marketta

• Why it’s awesome: Super fun vibes and happy locals
• Food nearby: There are plenty of food stalls to choose from, but some creative, delicious desserts can be found at Reid Street Kitchen!

Street food dining is honestly the way to spend your evenings in the Gold Coast! There’s just so much variety and fun to be had with the relaxed dining experience – why sit at a restaurant when you can make a whole adventure of it!

This foodie market is open on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. There’s always some great live music and an incredibly vibrant, enthusiastic atmosphere. You’ll find plenty of locals having some fun here! Your next stop includes dinner, so we suggest you enjoy a few drinks, try lots of samples, and get a sneaky before-dinner dessert! Or two.

Day 2 / Stop 6 – Spirits of the Red Sand Aboriginal Show & Dinner

• Why it’s awesome: Experience the ancient culture of the Australian aboriginals
• Cost: $85 USD
• Food nearby: The show comes with a 3-course dinner!

No itinerary for Gold Coast is complete without this cultural experience. End off your night with this live theater show! It’s a rare opportunity to learn more about this fascinating culture, and have a truly entertaining night!

The show follows the lives of three aboriginal brothers who meet British settlers for the first time. Watch Aboriginal rituals and traditions in this respectful, exciting show! You’ll follow the creation myths of the Dreamtime and an enthralling story with great stage sets.

Follow the unusual experience with a chargrilled feast! The hearty Australian buffet dinner even includes dessert and hot chocolate!

With 3 days in Gold Coast or more, you can choose to space out these itinerary stops over a week, or just one more day! Pick and choose your favorite options. There’s still a lot to do in the beautiful Gold Coast!

Point Danger

• Enjoy exquisite views with in-season whale sightings
• Perfect place for a picnic and uninterrupted chill time
• Can get busy, and little parking available, so visit before 11 am or after 3 pm

One of the most famous vistas in Australia, Point Danger is a necessary stop on your Gold Coast trip itinerary!

If you’re here between May and September, you’re almost guaranteed to spot a majestic and massive humpback whale! The cliff-top view provides the perfect place to watch them as they migrate. Whale sightings are possible all the way till November, and you may even see a range of the creatures! Dwarf minke and Southern Right whales also move through here.

Even out of whale watching season, it’s a wonderful place to visit. You can take a walk up the hill and enjoy a view of the vast stretch of beach, and the surfers riding waves all along the coast.

The area also has a lovely little rock pool where you can wade and swim, plus take some fun photographs before drying off on the sandy beach. You could spend an hour here or a whole day! There are even some lovely cafes close by, so you won’t have to go hungry. Explore the area, chat with locals, and take it slow.

Go Skydiving

• Feel that massive adrenaline rush as you’re falling through the sky
• Experience some of the best and most unique views of the Gold Coast
• Freefall before floating over the blue ocean and spotting Gold Coast landmarks

If you’re looking to expand your list of adventure activities on the Gold Coast, this is the perfect thing for you! Jump out of a helicopter or plane and freefall before pulling that string and floating comfortably down.

Gold Coast Skydive is our favorite option – they’re a family-run business, and have a good focus on safety and fun! You’ll get a safety brief before you set off. And then – you’ll take to the skies in a helicopter! This part alone is worth the mention in your Gold Coast itinerary. You’ll watch the Australian coastline dwindle away below you, and look out over the vast ocean.

When you’re high enough, step out the door with your tandem instructor! This exhilarating, scary moment will leave your heart pumping twice as fast for the next few hours.

The skydiving experience will take about 2 hours in total – it’s the perfect way to spend your afternoon on day 3 of your Gold Coast itinerary. You’ll land on the beach after floating gently over the ocean. And you can even get pictures and a video of the whole event to take back home.

We recommend you get yourself an ice cream or a beer at this point, and laze on the beach for a while! You’ll likely be shaking like a leaf from all the adrenaline, and there’s nothing like a cold drink after falling from the sky.

• Spot colorful fish, living coral and perhaps a turtle or two
• You can join a tour or just rent a snorkel mask

There are so many great ways to experience the ocean here on the Gold Coast! One of our favorites is always snorkeling. You get to enter a whole different world without negatively impacting the creatures here.

Rent a snorkel mask and perhaps some flippers, and set out to one of the local snorkeling spots. They’re dotted along the coast – ask a local where you should enter the water close to the beach you’re probably lying on already!

The water is clear and blue, and there’s so much to see. It may not be as exciting as heading out to one of the nearby islands (we’ve got you covered with a day trip), but it’s a wonderful way to spend a few hours!

You’ll find bright fish of all sorts, and the coral they use to stay clear of predators. If you look really hard, you may even spot an octopus! They’re so good at hiding, capable of changing their colors and even their texture to suit the ground beneath them. But look out for a rogue tentacle!

If you join a tour you’ll be taken to the best snorkeling place in the area, and provided with all the gear. If you prefer to spend a little extra for the convenience, then this is your best option!

Wet’n’Wild Gold Coast

• This fun and exciting place is great for all ages
• So many rides to choose from, many of them immense
• Perfect place for some fun in the sun – though it can get very busy

Want to spend the day getting wet but growing a little bored of the beach? This theme park is a ball of fun! There are so many great rides to go on – from the black hole, to the good old fashioned giant slides.

You can spend all day here trying out all the rides and enjoying the active fun. It has a really great vibe – how can it not, when everyone’s enjoying themselves?

It’s definitely best in Spring, when the crowds aren’t too big, the weather is warm and sunny, and most of the rides are open! Some close in winter, so while this is a good time to avoid the crowds entirely, you may be frustrated by a lack of choice. On the other hand, you get to go on the rides as many times as you like with no line!

Some of our favorite attractions at Wet’n’Wild are the giant wave pool where you can grab a lilo and catch some waves. Also check out the Tornado – where you’ll slip and slide down a massive hole, the black hole – for some sliding in the dark, and the Kamikazee – for some thrills from on high!

Purling Brook Falls

• Visit the Springbrook National Park and immerse yourself in nature
• Hike to the horsetail waterfall of Purling Brook
• Admire the beauty of the falls and its surrounding wilderness

You may have noticed a rather large number of water-based activities on this Gold Coast itinerary. That’s because the city is known for its amazing variety with just that! Not to mention – it’s usually perfectly warm and sunny, making beach time and waterfalls just the ticket.

The last stop on your 3 day itinerary in Gold Coast, is Purling Brook at the Springbrook National Park! This lovely horsetail waterfall is the perfect destination to head to on a hike. The trail takes about 2 hours to complete, both ways.

We suggest you pack a picnic and chill at the waterfall before setting off again. Just be respectful and leave no litter behind!

The waterfall is incredibly beautiful, and an important feature of the Gold Coast hinterland. The hiking trail will take you to the Purling Brook lookout, where you’ll enjoy fantastic views over the area, and see the waterfall plummeting off the cliff to the valley below. The trail then continues to the base of the waterfall, where you can swim in the natural pool.

If you have the day to spend, we suggest you check out the other Gold Coast attractions at the national park! The Natural Arch is the best lookout spot in the hinterland, and there are some smaller twin falls on another trail. You can enjoy a great day of hiking and exploration in the great Australian outdoors.

The Gold Coast, like the rest of Australia , is a relatively safe place to visit. There are few violent crimes, and most holidays go off without a hitch! However, the area has a bit of a drug problem going on, so there are some drug-related crimes you should try to steer clear of.

You can do this by avoiding quiet empty streets where you could easily be robbed. Keep your bags closed and at your side. Springbrook – Mount Tamborine National Park Small-Group Tour

Go beyond the city and explore the Australian wilderness. This is a serene, beautiful day trip that takes you to some of the best viewpoints in the country.

Your ranger tour guide will show you some of the rare wildlife and ancient trees while you learn about the unique habitat. Nocturnal Rainforest and Glow Worm Tour

Day 1 – Burleigh Heads

On day 1 of your Gold Coast itinerary, we’ll leave the morning open assuming you’re flying in and taking some time to get settled. Today, we’ll stick to the south of the Gold Coast and explore the Burleigh Heads area.

The Tropic on Burleigh Beach is a dining hotspot offering modern Australian cuisine with a focus on local seafood.

The park offers two main walking trails: the Rainforest Circuit and the Oceanview Walk.

The Rainforest Circuit, a tranquil path amid towering trees and dense vegetation, offers wildlife spotting, from koalas to lorikeets.

While the Rainforest Circuit may not be suitable for wheelchairs and strollers due to steeper sections, the Oceanview Walk provides assisted access.

There are some great restaurant options within walking distance from the Mysa Motel. You can find Italian, Thai, Mexican, classic Australian, and anything else you might want!

We also recommend heading to a supermarket tonight before you head out on your activity tomorrow.

Pick up some yummy cheeses, crackers, fruits, vegetable sticks, and dips to snack on for your lunch or afternoon snack while you are out adventuring!

Day 3 – Surfers Paradise

Today on your Gold Coast itinerary, head to Mariner’s Cove Marina for an epic day out on the water!

Pick up some breakfast on the way to the marina and head out on some jet skis for the morning.

This jet ski adrenaline ride will take you on a guided tour through the scenic waterways and as far as North Stradbroke Island, allowing you to discover hidden gems and iconic landmarks along the coast.

When you arrive, you watch a safety video and learn about the rules of the waterways.

All participants receive comprehensive instructions and safety equipment before embarking on the jet ski safari. No licence or experience is necessary which makes it fun for both beginners and experienced riders.

Professional guides will accompany you to guide you throughout the journey, pointing out landmarks and ensuring a safe and memorable experience for guests.

We went with Jet Ski Safari Gold Coast and they were fantastic. I was a beginner and Jarryd has been on a jet ski before but our guides Pandora and Connor were magnificent catering to different skill levels.

They give you tips and advice to make your ride more pleasurable.

You don’t get too wet at all on the jet skis (that’s if you don’t fall off). It is up to you if you want to head back to the hotel for a shower before all the other awesome activities you have planned for the day.

This is such a fun adrenaline-fuelled adventure and a unique way to explore the Gold Coast’s waterways and canals.

After all that adrenaline, you’ll probably be hungry so it’s time to grab some lunch. At the Mariner’s Cove Marina, you can find lots of excellent fish and chips restaurants.

You can eat your meal overlooking the marina. Since you are on the coast, fish and chips is a classic Aussie meal that you should definitely indulge in!

Duffy Down Under Boat Hire is also located at the Mariner’s Cove Marina. After lunch, you can get straight out on a boat and explore the other side of the waterways that you didn’t see on the jet skis.

Duffy Down Under Boat Hire has several electric boats which offer a sustainable and easy way to navigate the canals and rivers.

The staff will go through the potential routes, local rules, and safety tips before you take off.

You don’t need a license to hire the boat and it’s a great way to have freedom and flexibility while exploring the Gold Coast’s waterways.

Make sure you have your snacks and drinks for this afternoon boat adventure.

Enjoy the city views, and relax with your favourite music playing through the boat’s Bluetooth sound system.

These guys offer such a unique and leisurely experience to enjoy the Gold Coast’s stunning waterways. We really enjoyed it and highly recommend it!

Experience the awe-inspiring beauty of the Gold Coast from above with the team at Gold Coast Heli Tours . You can honestly see the entire city and area, with panoramic views from the Gold Coast beaches all the way out to the Hinterland.

We can not recommend this tour enough. This is a family-run company that offers thrilling helicopter rides where you will enjoy breathtaking aerial views of iconic landmarks, golden beaches, and the vibrant cityscape.

You can head out during the day or wait till sunset and see the golden light on the city.

The pilots have so much knowledge and provide commentary through your headset so you can learn about the history and culture of the area.

Nestled in the heart of the Gold Coast, Costa D’oro Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria is a charming culinary treasure.

From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with a warm and inviting ambiance that feels like a cozy Italian trattoria.

They have indoor or outdoor dining. The night we went, it was a little chilly but they had the heaters outside and it was cozy.

Whether you indulge in their wood-fired pizzas, classic pasta creations, or delightful seafood options, every bite transports you to the streets of Italy.

The staff were so friendly and the food was delicious. If you are looking for Italian flavours on the Gold Coast Costa, check out Costa D’oro Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria.

If you are not into Italian, there are many other restaurant options in the Surfers Paradise area.

Consider switching up your accommodation tonight and stay in Surfers Paradise at the fabulous Meriton Suites .

Having stayed at Meriton Suites Gold Coast ourselves, the views are incredible and their rooms are not badly priced.

The suites are spacious, well-appointed with full kitchen setup and a balcony. The hotel is 78 floors (252 metres) so depending on your room location, you will have an excellent view.

The staff are super friendly and helpful and the location is perfectly located near the beach and various shops, restaurants, and attractions.

The tram is right behind the hotel if you need to head to another part of the Gold Coast or the airport.

Stay here for a couple of nights to be near all your activities for the next few days!

Day 4 – Surfers Paradise and Northern Gold Coast

On day 4 of your 7 day Gold Coast itinerary, you will be spending the day in the Surfers Paradise area and surrounds.

Take an early morning stroll along the beach of Surfers Paradise and witness a breathtaking sunrise that paints the sky with vibrant hues.

As you walk along golden sands, the gentle sound of crashing waves creates a soothing ambiance.

Pause for a moment to soak in the awe-inspiring beauty and feel the warmth of the sun on your skin. Watching the sunrise along the beach path of Surfers Paradise is a serene and uplifting experience that connects you with the natural wonders of the Gold Coast.

You can rent a bike and ride along the Surfers Paradise boulevard if you want! The boulevard is a picturesque route, lined with palm trees and overlooking the glistening ocean.

Gold Coast Beaches are stunning so take advantage of these mornings. Walk or ride down to ESPL Coffee in Surfer Paradise and grab breakfast to start your day.

Head to One of the Theme Parks

The Gold Coast is renowned for its world-class theme parks, offering a plethora of thrills and entertainment for visitors of all ages.

It is fun for all ages. Everyone can indulge in exhilarating water slides or relax in the sun-drenched pools.

Spending a half-day to a full day here ensures ample time for water-based excitement.

Movie World is another popular choice for everyone, combining thrilling rides with cinematic experiences.

Explore movie-themed attractions, enjoy spectacular live shows, and embark on exciting roller coasters inspired by iconic films.

So you can choose from a number of theme parks for the day. Spend the whole day at one theme park, or choose to switch between different locations.

We have not mentioned Sea World as we are still on the fence about this theme park company. Sea World does great conservation work but they are also breeding dolphins within their facility for entertainment. We are not a fan of this and would not visit Sea World ourselves.

This is our opinion and we ask you to please your own research and decide whether you want to visit or not.

The trail winds through towering trees and vibrant greenery, providing a peaceful and refreshing walk. We found ourselves mesmerised by the diversity of plant life, with ferns, moss-covered rocks, and delicate wildflowers adorning the trail.

This loop walk is very easy and will only take about 30 minutes from the Burra Binna Lodge carpark.

If you do the walk early in the morning or late in the evening, the lighting is gorgeous coming through the trees. You can hear all the native birds and you may even see a kangaroo!

Binna Burra Lodge has a restaurant there that offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The rustic restaurant offers a menu showcasing fresh, locally sourced ingredients prepared by its chefs.

Binna Burra Lodge offers inside dining by the fire or al fresco on the terrace or on the deck with a beautiful view.

Elevate your stay in the area with a tiny home at Binna Burra Lodge ! This is where we stayed and it was an amazing experience.

As we arrived, we were immediately captivated by the charm and tranquility of the lodge nestled on the border of the Lamington National Park. The location of this accommodation is stunning.

The Tiny Houses are located on the Bellbird clifftop, with uninterrupted views of the Ships Stern Range with their full-sized glass wall. You can sit inside on those chilly morning or evenings or make the most of the outside deck and take it all in.

The Tiny Wild Home was so cozy and thoughtfully designed providing a unique blend of comfort and immersion in nature. Surrounded by greenery and breathtaking views, we honestly felt a deep sense of connection to the natural world.

Each tiny home was equipped with modern amenities, with comfortable bedding to a well-equipped kitchenette while still maintaining a rustic charm. It’s a chance to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with the beauty and serenity of the natural world.

Make sure you wake up for sunrise. You will experience the most amazing sunrise from your Tiny Wild Home, even laying in bed.

From watching stunning sunrises and sunsets to stargazing under clear night skies, this place is an experience of its own.

Day 6 – Tamborine National Park

One Day 6 of this Gold Coast itinerary, continue exploring Lamington National Park before heading over to Tamborine National Park!

Do not miss this one! Waking up in the Tiny Wild Homes was a truly magical experience as the sun slowly rose over Lamington National Park.

The serene ambiance and breathtaking views created an unforgettable start to the day, filling me with a deep appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounded me.

You can have breakfast in your Tiny Wild House or head up to the Binna Burra Lodge for breakfast.

They offer a range of different breakfasts and great coffee. If it is a chilly morning, you can sit by the cozy fireplace or sit on the deck and enjoy the sun and view.

The staff were very friendly and accommodated for different dietary requirements.

The Caves Hike in Lamington National Park is a captivating trail that unveils the park’s natural wonders.

With a length of approximately 4 kms, the hike typically takes around 2 to 3 hours to complete, depending on your pace and exploration along the way.

As you embark on the trail, you’ll meander through ancient rainforests, surrounded by towering trees and lush vegetation.

The path gradually ascends, leading you to magnificent rock formations and hidden caves.

These caves serve as a testament to the park’s geological history and provide a unique opportunity for exploration.

Throughout the hike, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and distant mountain ranges.

The tranquil sounds of birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves accompany you on your journey, creating a serene and immersive experience.

The days can heat up, especially in the summer, so make sure you have enough water for the hike and sun protection.

Also, there are no facilities along the trail so make sure you go to the toilet before you leave. Like any time being in nature, please leave no trace.

Take your time to appreciate the natural beauty and immerse yourself in the peaceful ambiance of this secluded corner of the park. It really is just gorgeous.

The drive to Tamborine National Park from Burra Binna Lodge will take about 1 hour to reach Cedar Creek Falls entrance. As you ascend into the mountainous region, the air becomes cooler and crisp, signalling your arrival at this lush rainforest retreat.

The well-paved roads guide you through the park, allowing you to explore its many walking trails and breathtaking lookouts.

Along the way, you will be surrounded by dense forests, towering trees, and vibrant birdlife, creating a sense of tranquility and natural beauty.

Cedar Creek Falls is a picturesque waterfall nestled in the Tamborine National Park in the Gold Coast hinterland.

The waterfall cascades down a rocky ledge into a tranquil swimming hole, inviting visitors to cool off and relax.

With its natural beauty and peaceful ambiance, Cedar Creek Falls is a popular spot for locals and tourists seeking a moment of tranquility in nature.

The walk down is well pathed with some stairs. Anyone with a bit of fitness will be fine. There is a viewing platform near the beginning of the path if you do not want to walk all the way down.

The best place to eat in the area is Rainforest Restaurant and Bar at Cedar Creek Lodge.

The tranquil ambiance and natural elements of the restaurant create a serene backdrop for your meal. Get dressed up and make a night of it.

The menu showcases a fusion of flavours using locally sourced ingredients, with options ranging from fresh seafood to succulent steaks and creative vegetarian dishes. We had a variety of dishes and they were all magnificent.

The restaurant offers inside dining or outside dining on the deck area where you can enjoy your meal amidst the rainforest garden.

They have a bar where you can grab a drink before your dinner or after.

This is another accommodation we loved and highly recommend staying here. The Glamping Tents at Cedar Creek Lodge near Tamborine National Park are for those who want a camping getaway in luxury style.

Inside the Glamping Tents, you are greeted by a spacious and beautifully designed interior.

The tent is equipped with 2 comfortable queen size beds, cozy furnishings, coffee and tea setup, lamps, an outside modern bathroom, and a lovely deck with your own fire pit and sitting area.

There are large windows that you can roll up to allow natural light to flood in.

In the evenings, you can stargaze from the comfort of your own outdoor seating area while keeping warm by the fire pit. They also have games in the tent for you to enjoy.

There is one glamping tent that has a heated swimming pool, offering a great way to relax overlooking bushland. Get disconnected from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with the natural world.

Day 7 – Hot Air Balloons, Alpacas and Back to the City

This is the last day of the Gold Coast itinerary! You will finish the morning in the Hinterland and drive to the airport to head home.

A hot air balloon over the hinterland is a must-do on your Gold Coast itinerary! We highly recommend the guys at Hot Air . They were so professional and full of so much knowledge.

You will have to get up early, but it will be worth it! As the sun begins to rise, you will get ready to embark on a thrilling adventure that will take you soaring above the breathtaking landscapes.

As the balloon takes to the skies, you’ll be greeted by panoramic views of the stunning hinterland, with its rolling hills, farms, verdant forests, and picturesque vineyards.

Drifting with the wind, the pilot (Stu) points out iconic landmarks and tells you all about the area. You’ll have a bird’s-eye view of the region’s natural wonders, watching as the landscape is bathed in the warm hues of the rising sun.

The tranquility of the experience is truly captivating, offering a sense of serenity and freedom as you float above the world below.

Take your camera or phone to get some great photos. Just make sure they are attached to you somehow so you do not lose anything over the edge. The company has a camera on board for group photos also.

It’s an adventure that will leave you with a sense of wonder and an appreciation for the natural wonders that surround us. It is a great way to finish your Gold Coast itinerary.

After touch down, you may get a chance to walk inside the balloon. It was great to check out. The team will then take you to O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards to have a glass of champagne and a cooked breakfast.

After breakfast and the thrilling morning in the sky, calm your nerves by visiting with an alpaca. Located right next door to O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards is Mountview Alpaca Farm .

Mountview Alpaca Farm is a charming and interactive destination nestled in the scenic Gold Coast hinterland.

Visitors can get up close and personal with adorable alpacas by hand-feeding them and learning about these gentle creatures.

The farm provides a picturesque setting surrounded by lush greenery, offering a serene atmosphere to relax with your alpaca.

The guys at Mountview Alpaca Farm do great work. They have a few alpacas that are therapy animals and the owners take them into hospitals to visit patients.

Animals lovers will definitely have to check this place out!

As your time in the Gold Coast comes to an end, you have the option to drive back to either Gold Coast or Brisbane to catch your flight home.

If you choose to drive back to the Gold Coast, you’ll have the opportunity to soak in the beautiful coastal scenery one last time. The drive along the coastal highway offers stunning views of the Gold Coast beaches.

Alternatively, driving back to Brisbane gives you the chance to explore the vibrant capital city of Queensland before bidding farewell to this stunning region. Brisbane offers a mix of cultural attractions, bustling markets, and scenic parks that are worth exploring if you have some extra time before your flight. You could even spend the night.

Getting Around the Gold Coast

If you do not have your own wheels, there are many ways to get around the Gold Coast area. You will need a car to head out to the Gold Coast Hinterland as transport is very limited out there.

The Gold Coast has an excellent public transport system managed by TransLink , offering bus, tram, and train services.

The G:link light rail system , also known as ‘the G’, runs from Helensvale to Broadbeach, connecting several main points, including Southport and Surfers Paradise.

Surfside Buslines operate numerous bus routes throughout the region. A Go Card, a pre-paid travel card, can be used across all TransLink services.

If you prefer the convenience of your own vehicle, car rental services are readily available.

Driving gives you the flexibility to explore further afield areas like the Hinterland’s national parks.

Do note that parking, especially in popular areas like Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, can sometimes be challenging to find and may be paid.

The Gold Coast is very pedestrian and bike-friendly, with extensive pathways and bike lanes.

It’s an ideal way to explore the beachfront areas. Bike rental services are available at numerous locations.

Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber are also popular on the Gold Coast. They offer a convenient and often time-efficient way of getting around, especially if you’re travelling in a group or have lots of luggage.

Lastly, the Gold Coast also has a network of waterways, and taking a ferry can be a scenic and leisurely way to travel, especially around areas like Main Beach and South Stradbroke Island.

Planning your routes and transport methods in advance can help you make the most of your visit to the Gold Coast.

Getting to the Gold Coast

There are a few ways to get to the Gold Coast area. You will need a car to head out to the Gold Coast Hinterland as transport is very limited out there.

Flying into the Gold Coast is very simple. Gold Coast Airport , also known as Coolangatta Airport, is your gateway to this stunning region where there is so much to do.

The Coolangatta Airport is located in the southern part of the city. As you fly in, enjoy beautiful views of the coastline and hinterland, so try and get a window seat.

There are many transportation options, from car hire services to taxis, Ubers, and the SkyBus service, providing transfers to key Gold Coast locations. We picked up a rental car and the process was very simple and easy.

The airlines that fly into the Gold Coast airport are Air Asia, Air New Zealand, Jetstar, Qantas, Virgin Australia, Scoot, and Hong Kong Airlines.

If you can not fly direct from your destination, you may have a connecting flight through another city or you can fly into Brisbane and drive down to the Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast is well-connected with several major highways and motorways. If you’re driving as a day trip from Brisbane , the most direct route is via the Pacific Motorway (M1), which takes approximately one hour.

This scenic route provides stunning views of the Gold Coast skyline as you approach the city.

If you’re coming from the south, you can take the Pacific Highway (also known as the M1 in New South Wales), which connects with the Gold Coast Highway.

This route will bring you up from New South Wales through beautiful coastal towns such as Byron Bay and Tweed Heads.

The Gold Coast Highway is a major arterial road that runs parallel to the coastline, providing access to the city’s key attractions and beachside suburbs. It’s a scenic drive with ocean views on one side and high rises on the other.

Taking a bus to the Gold Coast is a cost-effective and straightforward option. Long-distance services like Greyhound Australia connect the Gold Coast to major cities like Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne, usually arriving at Surfers Paradise’s Coach Transit Centre.

From Brisbane, Translink buses offer regular services to the Gold Coast, taking just over an hour.

Upon reaching the Gold Coast, local bus services by Surfside Buslines and Translink provide easy access to popular attractions.

For regular public transportation users, consider purchasing a Go Card, a prepaid card valid on all Translink services in South East Queensland.

Check the latest timetables and plan routes in advance for a smooth journey. Taking a bus allows you to relax and enjoy the scenic journey to the Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast’s stunning beaches set the scene for an unforgettable first day. Begin at Surfers Paradise, the iconic heart of the Gold Coast’s beach culture. 

Here, the vibrant energy is palpable as you stroll along the golden sands, the rhythmic waves setting a serene soundtrack. 

After basking in the morning sun, find a cosy café where the scent of coffee mingles with the salty sea air, offering a delightful start to your day.

Next, head to Broadbeach, known for its family-friendly atmosphere and proximity to Pacific Fair, one of Australia’s largest shopping centres. 

This beach offers a more relaxed vibe, perfect for unwinding after indulging in retail therapy. The soft sands and gentle waves provide a peaceful retreat.

In the afternoon, explore Palm Beach, celebrated for its clean, unique beachfront living. It’s an ideal spot for those seeking a quieter, pristine beach experience. 

The area’s natural beauty makes it perfect for a leisurely walk or a tranquil picnic by the sea.

As the day transitions to evening, visit Currumbin Beach, nestled in lush bushland. This area is known for its picturesque stretch of sand between Currumbin Alley and Elephant Rock. 

The rock pools here are ideal for a refreshing swim or a relaxed picnic as the sun sets.

Conclude your day at Burleigh Heads, where the dramatic backdrop of Burleigh Heads National Park meets one of the finest surf beaches on the coast. 

The vibrant dining scene offers many options for a memorable dinner with stunning ocean views. 

After your meal, immerse yourself in the lively nightlife, where bars and cosy spots come alive with music and local charm.

Day 2: Sea World Adventures

Embark on an aquatic adventure at Sea World, where the ocean’s wonders come to life. 

This marine park is a delightful blend of thrilling rides, educational exhibits, and up-close encounters with marine life. 

It’s an experience that appeals to all, whether you’re a family with kids or fascinated by the ocean’s mysteries.

One of the highlights for me was the mesmerising jellyfish exhibit. Watching these ethereal creatures glide through the water, changing colours in a hypnotic dance, was an experience I’ll never forget. 

Learning about these fascinating and often misunderstood creatures is a visual spectacle and an educational journey.

For those seeking a bit of playful fun, Castaway Bay – Battle Boats is a must-try. I had a blast here, engaging in friendly water battles. 

Armed with water cannons, visitors can soak each other, making for a hilarious and refreshing experience. 

It’s a great way to cool off and share some laughs, especially on a warm Gold Coast day.

The thrill-seekers in my family were drawn to the Leviathan roller coaster. 

My husband and daughters braved this ride and returned exhilarated, declaring it the most thrilling experience ever. 

The sheer excitement and adrenaline rush of the Leviathan is something they still talk about, insisting that no other roller coaster could ever match up to this experience.

Gate opens 9:30 am – 5:00 pm.

Attractions open: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Day 3: Cinematic Thrills at Movie World

Prepare for a day of adventure and excitement at Warner Bros. Movie World , where the magic of the movies comes to life. 

This movie-themed park is a wonderland for those who love the thrill of rides, the joy of shows, and the fun of meeting beloved characters. 

It’s an entire day dedicated to cinematic magic and exhilarating experiences.

One of the standout attractions is the Wild West Falls Adventure Ride. Despite waiting over 30 minutes, the anticipation only adds to the excitement. 

This ride transports you into the heart of the Wild West, complete with Indian reservations, ghost towns, and geysers. 

The journey through this rugged landscape culminates in a heart-pounding splash, a moment that’s both thrilling and refreshing. 

It’s an experience that captures the essence of adventure and the wild spirit of the movies.

For the younger ones, the Junior Driving School is an absolute delight. 

Here, kids can swap the backseat for the driver’s seat, navigating a miniature version of Warner Bros. Movie World . 

Watching my girls take the wheel, their faces lit up with joy and independence, was a highlight of the day. 

A unique feature of Movie World is the daily parade, a spectacle not to be missed. Every day at 3:30 PM, the park comes alive with a vibrant parade that lasts until 3:45 PM. 

Characters from various movies and shows go through the park, accompanied by music and fanfare. 

It’s a dazzling display of costumes, floats, and performances, creating a festive atmosphere that captivates visitors of all ages. 

This parade is the perfect way to wrap up an action-packed day, leaving you with awe and a collection of magical memories.

Day 4: Mount Tamborine

Day 4 of your Gold Coast itinerary takes you to the serene and picturesque Mt Tamborine, a haven for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts. 

The area offers a variety of trails, each providing a unique glimpse into the region’s natural beauty. 

Two notable hikes I embarked on were the Curtis Falls track and the Cedar Creek Falls track to rock pools, which offered distinct experiences.

🚶‍♀️ Curtis Falls Track

Distance: 1.1km return

Time: Allow about 30 minutes of walking time

Experience: 

The Curtis Falls track is an enchanting journey in a wet eucalypt forest beneath towering flooded gums. 

As you walk, you’ll notice a noticeable drop in temperature, a welcome respite on a warm day. 

The path leads you into a lush rainforest, where the air is filled with the scent of damp earth and greenery. 

See the beautiful crow’s nest and staghorn ferns adorning the canopy. The track ends at a stunning rock pool, set against a backdrop of basalt rock, a glow-worm habitat. 

Be mindful that the track can get muddy and slippery, especially after rain, so checking the weather beforehand is advisable.

🚶‍♀️ Cedar Creek Falls Track to Rock Pools

This track starts from the Cedar Creek Falls lookout and takes you through a mix of eucalypt forest and dry rainforest. 

The descent to the rock pools is marked by a series of steps, ensuring a bit of a workout on your return journey. 

The rock pools themselves are a serene spot, perfect for a refreshing dip or to enjoy the tranquillity of nature. 

Unlike the Curtis Falls track, the path to Cedar Creek Falls is gravelled, making navigating easier.

Both hikes offer an excellent opportunity to connect with nature and experience the tranquillity of Mt Tamborine. 

Another must-visit trail is the Witches Falls, which offers a captivating walk through rainforest and past seasonal lagoons. It’s a journey that encapsulates the mystical feel of Mt Tamborine.

For a different perspective, visit the Tamborine Skywalk. This elevated walkway takes you high above the forest floor, offering a bird’s-eye view of the rainforest canopy. 

Or you can experience the thrill of Australia’s largest zipline attraction at the TreeTop Challenge in Tamborine Mountain.

Home to the Canyon Flyer, the country’s biggest, highest, and fastest guided zipline tour, and boasting Australia’s most prominent high ropes adventure park, it’s an exhilarating adventure not to be missed.

After your hikes, head to Gallery Walk, a charming street lined with galleries, craft shops, and cafes. 

It’s a perfect spot to find unique souvenirs or enjoy a leisurely lunch amidst local arts and crafts.

In the heart of Mt Tamborine’s Gallery Walk, a delightful lunch experience awaits at the Gallery Cafe. 

This charming spot is about the art on the walls and the art on the plate. The servings here are generous, offering great value for the price. 

The food is exceptional, with each dish crafted to please the eye and the palate. 

It’s the perfect place to refuel and relax after a morning of exploring the natural wonders of Mt Tamborine. 

As the day winds down, make your way to Main Western Road. Here, at Robert Sowter Park, you can catch an unforgettable sunset. 

It’s also a popular spot for hang gliders, adding an element of thrill as you watch them soar against the backdrop of the setting sun.

In the evening, you can enjoy an intimate encounter with glow worms , observing their luminous bodies and sticky silk threads up close.

These creatures rely on rainforests and damp caves for survival, needing consistently moist environments.

This specially crafted glow worm cave provides an optimal, controlled habitat for these unique insects, ensuring their preservation.

Day 5: Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

On Day 5 of your Gold Coast adventure, the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary offers an unforgettable experience with Australia’s native wildlife. 

One of the most heartwarming experiences here is cuddling a koala. 

This intimate encounter allows you to feel a unique connection with these adorable marsupials, highlighting the importance of their conservation.

As you wander through the sanctuary, don’t miss the Kangaroo Enclosure. You can walk amongst kangaroos in their natural habitat, observing and interacting with these iconic Australian animals. 

It’s a rare opportunity to experience wildlife in a respectful and close-up setting.

The sanctuary is also home to diverse animals, offering a unique glimpse into Australia’s rich biodiversity.

Day 6: Wet’n’Wild

On Day 6, your Gold Coast itinerary takes a splash at Wet’n’Wild , a water park that promises fun and excitement for all ages. 

This is the perfect place to cool off and enjoy some water-based adventure.

One of the highlights for children was the H2OASIS, a tropical splash zone paradise for anyone looking to dive into the fun. 

Its vibrant, playful setting is ideal for children and adults to enjoy the water in a lively yet relaxed atmosphere.

For the little ones, Wet’n’Wild Junior offers a world of fun. This area is specially designed for younger children, ensuring they can enjoy the water park experience in a safe and enjoyable environment.

It’s a delightful space where the kids can splash around and have a great time.

A family favourite was the Mammoth Falls, where we joined in for a white-water rafting experience. 

Riding together on a raft, we navigated through the watercourse’s twists and turns, enjoying the rapids’ thrill. 

It’s an exhilarating ride that brings the family together for an unforgettable adventure.

Day 7: SkyPoint Observation Deck

Day 7 of your Gold Coast journey takes you to new heights at the SkyPoint Observation Deck. 

Perched atop the Q1 building, Australia’s only beachside observation deck offers breathtaking panoramic views encompassing the Gold Coast, from the rolling surf to the distant hinterland.

SkyPoint stands at a staggering 230 meters above sea level, with the Q1 building reaching 322.5 meters. 

The journey to the observation deck is an experience, with the elevator whisking you from ground level to level 77 in just 42.7 seconds. 

The spire, a striking feature made of steel and glass, soars to a height of 97.7 meters. 

It’s fascinating to learn that the lifts use 1000 kilometres of electrical cabling, enough to stretch from the Gold Coast to Sydney.

One of the highlights of our visit was the buffet breakfast at SkyPoint Bistro + Bar , located on level 77. 

While the buffet was lovely, the spectacular view of the Gold Coast truly made the meal extraordinary. 

Imagine starting your day with a feast for the senses as you dine with the whole Gold Coast sprawling beneath you.

The SkyPoint breakfast buffet is available every day from 7:30 am to 10:30 am, with ticket prices starting from $44 per adult and $30 per child (aged 3 – 12). 

If you’re visiting for the view, entrance fees are $31.00 for an adult on weekdays and $23 for a child. 

On weekends, public holidays, and school holidays, the prices are slightly higher at $36.00 for adults and $28.00 for children.

Day 8: Springbrook National Park

On Day 8 of your Gold Coast itinerary, venture into the captivating Springbrook National Park, where nature’s artistry is vividly displayed. 

Located about 400km southwest of SkyPoint via Mudgeeraba, Springbrook is a treasure trove of natural wonders, from cascading waterfalls to ancient Antarctic beech trees.

Springbrook National Park is renowned for its stunning waterfalls and cascades and its ancient Antarctic beech trees remnants of the Gondwana rainforests. 

The park is divided into four distinct areas, each offering its own unique experiences:

⭐ Cougall Cascades Walk: This walk leads through subtropical rainforests to viewing platforms overlooking the scenic cascades and rock pools, with a glimpse into the area’s sawmilling past.

⭐ Warrie Circuit: A journey that takes you to ‘Meeting of the Waters’ and past the triple waterfalls of Poondahra, Poonyahra, and Blackfellow Falls before ascending back to the Canyon Lookout.

Day 9: Lamington National Park

For those who enjoy a stroll, the Rainforest Circuit is a must. This short walk takes you through a warm subtropical rainforest, a haven for bird watchers. 

The diversity of birdlife here is astounding, and the peaceful ambience of the forest is truly rejuvenating.

The Morans Fall Track is another gem, leading you through a forest of booyongs, figs, and brush boxes to the Morans Falls lookout. 

The view of the gorge from here is breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista that captures the essence of Lamington’s beauty.

If you’re intrigued by ancient history, the Box Forest Track is for you. 

This path winds through forests of the world’s oldest brush box trees, some dating back more than 1500 years. Walking among these ancient giants is like stepping back in time.

For families, the Albert River Circuit is a great choice. This track takes you down to Lightning Falls, following the Albert River to Echo Falls and Echo Point. 

The walk is enjoyable and suitable for children, though caution is advised near the cliffs.

Where to Stay on The Gold Coast

When planning a trip to the Gold Coast, choosing suitable accommodation is crucial for a memorable experience.

On our recent visit, we stayed at Pacific Place Apartments in Bilinga. While the place had its charms, I wouldn’t recommend it for those looking to be close to the main attractions.

The distance from hotspots like Surfers Paradise meant we faced long travel times, often 40 minutes to an hour one way, thanks to the challenging traffic in the area.

I suggest accommodations in Surfers Paradise or Southport for a more convenient and enjoyable stay.

These areas are bustling with activities and are much closer to most attractions.

You’ll find yourself right in the heart of the action, with easy access to various entertainment, dining, and shopping options.

The only exceptions are Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and the airport close to Bilinga.

However, staying in Surfers Paradise or Southport offers a more central location for exploring the Gold Coast’s many delights.

You could easily spend a couple of months on the Gold Coast and not run out of things to do, but most travelers only have a few days up their sleeves to explore.

Furthermore, I have put together this 3 Days in Gold Coast itinerary with recommendations on the best beaches to swim, fun-fuelled activities to try, panoramic viewpoints to see, raging waterfalls to visit, and much more!

BEST TIME TO VISIT GOLD COAST

The Gold Coast is one of the only places on the East Coast of Australia that sees glorious sunshine almost all year round.

If you want the best of the best conditions weatherwise, I recommend visiting between May and October (Autumn – Spring) which is ideal for beach bumming, nature walks, and water sports. 

Summer on the Gold Coast is between December and February which sees hot temperatures and a lot of rainfall.

GETTING AROUND THE GOLD COAST

The Gold Coast is quite a large destination boasting 57 km of white sand beaches, vast hinterland areas, and everything in between.

There are a few transportation options on the Gold Coast which include renting a car, public transport, and Uber.

RENT A CAR:

In my opinion, renting a car is by far going to be your best option to reach all of the spots on the Gold Coast. 

Driving a car on the Gold Coast is very safe and the road rules are very straightforward. If you’re an American or European, do note that we drive on the left-hand side of the road in Australia so this might take a few hours to get used to.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT:

Public buses and trams run frequently along the Gold Coast Highway which is another good option for getting around if you decide to not rent a car. 

I recommend purchasing a Go Card from the ‘Hub convenience store’ at the Gold Coast Airport when you arrive or from any 7-Eleven stores on the Gold Coast.

It costs $10 AUD to purchase a Go Card and you will also need to top it up with around $20 – $30 which should be enough to cover your transport for 3 days on the Gold Coast. 

It’s as easy as tapping on and tapping off with your Go Card when riding on the buses or trams on the Gold Coast.

A handy tool to use when traveling on public transport is the Translink Journey Planner .

If you don’t have a Go Card, it’s possible to purchase paper tickets on board public transport, however, you will end up paying around 30% more for each journey.

There are quite literally thousands of Uber drivers on the Gold Coast and at any time of the day you are able to search and book an Uber online using the app and within a matter of minutes, you can easily find a ride to get from A to B.

Uber is a lot cheaper than taxis on the Gold Coast and if it’s your first time using Uber, you’ll get your first ride for free!

ITINERARY GOLD COAST – DAY 1: GOLD COAST NORTH

Burleigh hill & cock rock viewpoint.

Burleigh Hill is an iconic landmark and not to be missed on your itinerary for Gold Coast.

There are 27 hectares of the national park that makes up Burleigh Hill and awaits to be explored.

You can discover dense rainforest, coastal pandanus groves, rocky foreshores, amazing beaches, tidal sandbars, and panoramic viewpoints.

Start the first day bright and early to explore Burleigh Hill by taking the 2.3 km walking track that leads you in and around the beauty of Burleigh Heads National Park.

On the Rainforest Circuit, you can find the Tumgun Viewpoint which overlooks the southern Gold Coast beaches, and Cock Rock which is an infamous viewpoint perched on the cliffside at the very top of Burleigh Hill.

MIAMI BEACH & LOOKOUT

Heading north of Burleigh Heads along the beach road, the next location on this itinerary is Miami Beach.

Miami Beach is most popular for surfing, beach bumming, laid-back cafes, coastal walks, and panoramic viewpoints. 

It’s no more than 10 minutes drive from Burleigh to reach Miami and there are plenty of free parking spaces along the beachfront.

You can head straight to the beach for a swim or take the walking track along the shoreline and up the Miami Stairs to the Mick Schamburg Park Lookout.

This particular lookout is up there with one of my favorites! Boasting extensive views of the beaches to the south and the incredible Gold Coast City skyline can be seen clearly to the north. 

Miami Beach is a worthy addition to your list of places to see and you only need around 30 – 45 minutes to visit this beautiful location.

SURFERS PARADISE

Next up on this Gold Coast itinerary is Surfers Paradise which is the beating heart of the Gold Coast, boasting a high-rise metropolis right on the very shores of Surfers Paradise Beach.

Surfers Paradise is one of the most iconic and most popular places to visit on the Gold Coast featuring not only white sand beaches and high-rises but also restaurants, cafes, bars, shopping centers, market stalls, nightclubs, arcades, indoor skydiving, and many more fun-fuelled activities to keep you entertained for hours!

One of the must-see attractions in Surfers Paradise is the SkyPoint Observation Deck in the Q1 building which is the tallest tower in Australia standing 322 meters above sea level.

GOLD COAST ITINERARY – DAY 2: GOLD COAST SOUTH

Tallebudgera creek.

To kick things off on day 2 of your Gold Coast itinerary, head to the beautiful Tallebudgera Creek which is situated on the south side of Burleigh Hill.

Tallebudgera Creek, also known as Talley Creek, boasts some of the clearest turquoise water in the entire Gold Coast.

On low tide there are several sand bars that appear, creating little islands to go and enjoy while they last.

Another popular spot is Echo Beach, a cute little cove tucked away on the south side of Burleigh Hill. There is access to this beach along the Burleigh Headland coastal walk.

If you love bridge jumping, there is a deeper section of Tallebudgera Creek where you can launch yourself off of the five-meter-high bridge and into the creek below.

There can be strong currents and boats zipping around so be mindful of these conditions when swimming in Tallebudgera Creek.

To be on the safe side, it’s best to swim in the lifeguard-patrolled area in between the red and yellow flags.

Be sure to take a stroll along the pathway on the southern side of Talley Creek which leads out to a rock wall sitting in the ocean. From here you can enjoy epic views of Burleigh Hill and Tallebudgera Beach.

Also at Tallebudgera Creek, there are some facilities such as changing rooms, toilets, showers, and a nearby cafe.

CURRUMBIN ROCKPOOLS & COUGAL CASCADES

Currumbin Rock Pools and Cougal Cascades is the perfect place to go to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and spend a few hours swimming, adventuring, and relaxing in nature with your friends and family!

Currumbin Rock Pools and Cougal Cascades are located in Currumbin Valley at the southern end of the Gold Coast, approximately 25 minutes drive from Tallebudgera Creek.

Currumbin Rock Pools features a large natural swimming hole that is fed by a running stream known as Currumbin Creek.

The large pool is surrounded by boulders and rocks which is great for exploring and rock jumping.

A short 10-minute drive up the road from Currumbin Rock Pools I highly recommend checking out another epic attraction known as Cougal Cascades.

Cougal Cascades features a lush rainforest walk that leads upstream through Currumbin Valley, passing by multiple waterfalls, cascading swimming holes, and epic viewpoints along the way. 

The best thing about Cougal Cascades is that there is not just one attraction to see when venturing here.

There are lots of things to see and do during your visit which are suitable for people of all sorts and all ages!

CURRUMBIN BEACH & ELEPHANT ROCK

Currumbin Beach is one of my favorite places to visit which is why I couldn’t resist adding it to this itinerary for Gold Coast.

Currumbin Beach, also known as Currumbin Alley, is approximately 15 minutes drive back to the coastline from Currumbin Rockpools.

When you arrive, you can park your car in the beachfront parking lot and set off on foot to explore.

Most famous for its right-hand surf break, Currumbin attracts surfers from far and near to experience a long-riding wave that breaks off the point in front of Currumbin Rock.

If you want to take a surf lesson during your visit to the Gold Coast then Currumbin Alley Surf School is the place to do it!

Book a 1.5-hour surfing lesson for as little as $40 AUD and ride your very first wave. Suitable for people of all ages, sizes, and ability levels.

Other than surfing, Currumbin is a great spot for beach bumming, swimming in the clear waters in the alley, exploring the rocky headland around Currumbin Rock, and having a coffee at one of the beachfront cafes.

Elephant Rock lies at the very southern end of Currumbin Beach, which boasts a panoramic viewpoint at the summit.

It’s a steep climb up the concrete stairs to the top, but the coastline view is 100% worth it!

KIRRA BEACH & VIEWPOINT

Next up on this 3-day Gold Coast itinerary is Kirra Beach and viewpoint.

Located just 15 minutes south of Currumbin Beach, you can drive the coastal road that runs parallel to the ocean and you can find plenty of parking spaces when you arrive in Kirra.

Kirra Beach is widely known across the globe in the surfing community as one of the best surf breaks in Australia, and the entire world.

Only occasionally does Kirra show its true potential, but when it does, you’ll be in for a show!

In the very corner of Kirra Beach, you can find the Surf Club situated right on the sand overlooking the long stretch of white sand coastline and turquoise ocean waters. Pop in for lunch and a cold beer on a hot summer day!

Kirra also has an awesome viewpoint located on top of the grassy headland. There is a huge statue of an eagle with its wings spread, so it’s very hard to miss.

There is a set of stairs leading up to the viewpoint and at the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Kirra Beach facing north, and to the south, you can see Greenmount, Rainbow Bay, and Snapper Rocks.

GREENMOUNT COASTAL WALK

Once you’ve spent some time enjoying Kirra Beach, drive a few minutes south and find a car park along the beach. From here you can set off on foot along the Greenmount coastal boardwalk.

Greenmount is yet another spectacular beach that is great for swimming, sun tanning, and surfing.

There are lifeguards on duty 7 days a week between 8 am to 5 pm, so if swimming isn’t your strong point be sure to swim between the red and yellow flags.

After a dip in the ocean, take the boardwalk around Greenmount Headland and over to Rainbow Bay.

There are a number of great photo opportunities along this walk so have your camera at the ready.

RAINBOW BAY & SNAPPER ROCKS

If you are still on foot, continue along the Greenmount coastal walk to the beautiful Rainbow Bay and Snapper Rocks.

I used to live in an apartment in Rainbow Bay for a year or so and ultimately it became my favorite beach on the Gold Coast! Boasting a beautiful cove, white sands, crystal clear water, and amazing surf, Rainbow Bay is not to be missed on your itinerary for Gold Coast.

At the end of Rainbow Bay, there is a rocky headland known as Snapper Rocks, which is a world-famous surf break here in Australia.

Every year the World Surf League event is held at Snapper Rocks which draws in hundreds of spectators to watch professional surfers from around the world competing for the win.

I can also recommend heading up to the restaurant and bar at Rainbow Bay Surf Club for a meal or a drink.

The view from the top deck overlooks the entire Gold Coast and it’s a sight you just have to see with your own eyes!

POINT DANGER LOOKOUT

Last but not least on day 2 is Point Danger Lookout which is located at the top of the hill, near Snapper Rocks.

Point Danger features a clifftop pathway with stunning views of the Gold Coast beaches to the north and in the opposite direction, you can see right across the river to Fingal Heads in Northern NSW.

There is a large monument at Point Danger that marks the border of Queensland and New South Wales which is worthy of checking out and taking some happy snaps.

Another popular surf break that lies below the cliffs at Point Danger is Duranbah Beach, featuring white sands, big waves, and a grassy area with undercover seating and BBQs. Not a bad spot to perch up for the afternoon.

If you didn’t pop into either of the surf clubs along the way, there is a popular spot for food and drinks at Point Danger at a place called D’bah Cafe.

I recommend sticking around for sunset here at Point Danger as it’s one of the best locations to be able to watch the last rays of the sun setting over the mountains!

GOLD COAST ITINERARY – DAY 3: GOLD COAST HINTERLAND

Springbrook national park & waterfalls.

Springbrook National Park is one of the most popular hinterland areas on the Gold Coast which plays home to an array of iconic Australian wildlife and beautiful nature.

From the coast, it’s approximately a 1-hour drive to reach Springbrook Mountain and you will need your own vehicle as there are no public transport options.

There are many viewpoints, nature walks, and waterfalls to visit in Springbrook National Park and I recommend spending an entire day out here to see it all.

A great option for visiting is the Springbrook Waterfalls and Rainforest Tour .

This guided tour includes return transfers from your hotel in Surfers Paradise and a visit to a number of awesome locations in Springbrook National Park.

DRACULA’S CABARET DINNER & SHOW

Draculas Cabaret is, in my opinion, one of the best attractions on the Gold Coast and an unforgettable experience not to be missed during your visit.

Located in Broadbeach across the road from Pacific Fair Shopping Center, Draculas is open 5 nights a week from Tuesdays to Saturdays and it’s recommended to book in advance to secure a ticket.

Without giving too much of the experience away, Dracula’s Cabaret Gold Coast is a comedy cabaret show that will have you laughing until your head falls off.

There is plenty of dancing, singing, aerial performances, and much more to keep you entertained.

When you step inside you will get to take a ride on the Ghost Train to the theater waiting room where you will then be given a glass of complimentary champagne and some finger food before taking your seats. The ticket also includes a 3-course dinner!

Gold Coast Travel Guide

For most travelers, visiting the Gold Coast means spending time in the most famous city in the area, Surfers Paradise (a name which dates all the way back to 1917). This is a major stop for travelers and backpackers looking to get some sun, surf, and spend time partying.

Surfers (as it’s colloquially known) is a fun place to visit but my advice is to avoid spending a lot of time here and head to some of the better, less crowded cities like Burleigh Heads and Coolangatta instead. When you get out of the city, you get to see a lot of nicer beaches, watering holes, local spots, and places with cheaper prices (and fewer tourists).

Top 5 Things to See and Do on the Gold Coast

1. Learn to surf

It isn’t called “Surfers Paradise” for no reason! Up and down the coast, you’ll find some of the best surfing in Australia . Even if you don’t know how to surf, you’ll be able to find cheap lessons anywhere along the coast. A two-hour group lesson costs around 75 AUD. If you don’t need lessons and just want to surf, you can rent a board for around 60 AUD per day. Rainbow Bay, Greenmount, and Burleigh Heads and some of the best surf spots for beginners in the area.

2. Visit the Q1

Opened in 2005, this supertall skyscraper was once the world’s tallest residential tower (it was the tallest from 2005 to 2011). Today, it’s the 13th tallest residential tower in the world as well as the tallest building in Australia at 322 meters (1,058 feet). For views overlooking the coast, this place can’t be beaten. Admission to the SkyPoint Observation Deck, which offers 360-degree views, is 29 AUD.

3. Explore the hinterland

There is more to the Gold Coast than beaches. Head into the “hinterland” for great rivers, swimming holes, hiking, and parks. During the weekend, you can snap up some local produce at a farmer’s market or tackle one of the many rainforests walks available on Tamborine Mountain. Some suggested hikes include Curtis Falls and Lower Creek Circuit (easy), Knoll Walking Track and Cameron Falls (easy), and Palm Grove Circuit to Jenyns Circuit Loop (moderate).

4. See the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

This massive compound spans almost 70 acres and is home to aviaries, crocodiles, dingos, emus, wombats, and more! A part of the Queensland heritage Register, the sanctuary opened in 1947 and has a mini railway so you can easily explore and navigate the park. A huge free-flying population of lorikeets (colorful parrots) visits daily and you can watch the birds eat and fly around. Admission is 54.95 AUD for adults and 41.95 AUD for kids under 13.

5. Hit the beaches

The region has more than 70 kilometers (43 miles) of fantastic beaches and Surfers Paradise is home to some of the “best beaches in the world” according to some. Popular beaches include Southport, Broadbeach, Nobby’s, and Coolangatta. I personally like Coolongatta the best.

Other Things to See and Do on the Gold Coast

1. walk the burleigh hill.

Make like the locals and stretch your legs along Burleigh’s esplanade before heading around the hill. The track, located halfway between Surfers Paradise and Coolangatta, is bordered by lush rainforest on one side and stunning views north to Surfers Paradise and south over Tallebudgera Creek. It takes around 45-minutes to walk (it’s only 2.3 kilometers).

2. Go whale watching

Between June and October, humpback whales make their migratory journey from the Antarctic to warmer waters where they mate and give birth. Later in the season, the whales make their return journey, swimming with their calves beside them. It’s also common to see bottlenose dolphins, huge loggerhead turtles, and orcas. Tours start at about 89 AUD.

3. Experience the nightlife

“The Goldie” is one of the biggest party destinations in Australia. There are countless bars, clubs, and pub crawls here. Surfers Paradise has the biggest nightlife and is where most people party, but Coolangatta is just as good and less touristy (and cheaper).

4. Explore Infinity

If you are looking to do something completely different, check out Infinity Attraction. This mirror and sensory maze is filled with funky music, dazzling lights, sound effects, and mirror illusions. It’s like a super fun carnival maze but way more interactive and high-tech, with 20 different rooms to explore. It’s a good activity to do with kids. Admission is 28.90 AUD.

5. Check out the Currumbin Valley rock pools

At the end of the drive through Currumbin Valley, you’ll find an easy pathway through the rainforest leading you to some rock pools. Fresh mountain water flows over the hills of boulders and it makes for the perfect place to have a swim and cool off (especially in the hot summer months). There are picnic tables, rope swings, bathrooms, and even a snack bar to get something to eat.

6. Hike the Lost World Valley

Although it’s only a short drive from Surfers Paradise, the Lost World Valley is an off-grid, deep-in-the-jungle hiking trail in Lamington National Park, a World Heritage Site that spans 206 square kilometers (80 square miles). At the end of your rainforest trek, you’ll find private swimming holes and waterfalls. There are dozens of hikes here. Some of the most popular are the Coomera Circuit (moderate), Morans Falls (moderate), and the Green Mountains Albert River Circuit Loop (hard).

7. Hang out at Miami Marketta

This diverse food market is home to pretty much every type of cuisine there is. You can find Thai food, tapas, and everything in between. There are also all kinds of events and live music here too (tickets required). The market is open Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 5pm until late. Bring an appetite!

8. Visit the Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre

At the Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre you can hire an Indigenous guide to lead you through Burleigh Head National Park. You’ll hear traditional stories and learn about the historical sites used by the Yugambeh people, allowing you to connect with some of Australia’s most fascinating indigenous cultures. Walkabouts start at 39 AUD.

9. See Twin Falls

Twin Falls is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in South East Queensland, located in Springbrook National Park. It only takes 15 minutes of hiking to get there, and it’s actually best to visit after heavy rainfall. All you need to do is follow the road through the Settlement Camping area and then just beyond Canyon Lookout for the road leading to the Twin Falls Circuit.

Gold Coast Travel Costs

Hostel prices – Dorms with 4-8 beds start at 40-53 AUD per night. There aren’t really any larger dorms here. Private rooms start at 85 AUD per night. Free Wi-Fi is standard and most hostels have self-catering facilities so you can cook your own food.

For those traveling with a tent, a basic plot without electricity costs around 30 AUD per night for two people.

Budget hotel prices – Budget hotels start at 120 AUD, though options are limited for two-star hotels. Expect the standard amenities like Wi-Fi, TV, and AC. Most hotels in the region are three-star and up, costing closer to 200 AUD per night.

For Airbnb, private rooms start at 75 AUD but average closer to 150 AUD per night. For an entire home or apartment, expect to pay at least 150 AUD (though prices average triple that so be sure to book early).

Food – Most meals at a restaurant cost 20-30 AUD. For a three-course meal with a drink, expect to pay around 50 AUD. Fast food (think McDonald’s) is around 13 AUD for a combo meal while a medium pizza is 17 AUD. If you want international food like Thai, Chinese, or Indian, meals cost between 15-20 AUD for a main dish.

Beer is around 8-9 AUD while a cappuccino or latte is 5 AUD. Bottles of water cost 2.50 AUD.

If you cook your meals, expect to pay 75-90 AUD per week for staples like pasta, vegetables, chicken, and other basic foodstuffs.

Backpacking the Gold Coast Suggested Budgets

On a backpacker budget of 75 AUD per day, you can stay in a hostel dorm, cook all of your meals, limit your drinking, use public transportation to get around, and stick to mostly free activities like lounging on the beach, swimming, and hiking. If you plan on drinking more, add 10-20 AUD to your daily budget.

On a mid-range budget of 225 AUD per day, you’ll be able to stay in a private Airbnb room, eat out most of your meals, do a couple of paid activities (like surfing), take the occasional taxi to get around, and enjoy a few drinks at the bar. You won’t live large but you’ll be comfortable.

On a “luxury” budget of 475 AUD or more per day, you can stay at a hotel, eat out for every meal, drink all you want, do more expensive tours (like whale watching), and hire a rental car to get around. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages – some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in AUD.

Gold Coast Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

The Gold Coast can be very expensive (it’s a popular tourist getaway after all) to visit. Fortunately, there are still some ways to save here. Here are ways to cut down your costs so you don’t break the bank:

• Free transport – Some accommodation provides free transport to and from the airport. If you are going to Surfers Paradise, they might also pick you up for free at the bus station. Book accommodation with a shuttle to save a few bucks.
• Eat cheap – Eating out can be very expensive; however, there are a lot of sandwich shops around that can keep your costs down. Avoid the sit-down restaurants, and instead, grab a sandwich or some delicious Asian or Indian food (which tends to be a little cheaper).
• Stay with a local – Accommodation on the Gold Coast is pricey. If you plan ahead, you can usually find a Couchsurfing host. This way, you not only have a place to stay, but you’ll have a local host that can share insider tips and advice.
• Drink goon (box wine) – Goon is infamous on the Australian backpacker hostel trail. This cheap box of wine is the best way to drink, get a buzz, and save a lot of money at the same time.
• Work for your room – Many hostels offer travelers the chance to work for their accommodation. In exchange for a few hours a day of cleaning, you get a free bed. Commitments vary but most hostels ask you to stay for at least a week.
• Cook your own meals – The best way to reduce your costs is to cook as many meals as possible. Book a hostel or Airbnb with a kitchen so you can save money on food costs. It’s not glamorous but you’ll save a fortune!
• Book tours as a package – This country has a lot of exciting activities and tours that eat into any budget. Booking activities together through a hostel or tour agency may get you a discount and save you hundreds of dollars. Always ask if there are package deals available.
• Bring a water bottle – The tap water in Australia is safe to drink. Bring a reusable water bottle with you to save money and lower your plastic use. LifeStraw makes a bottle with a built-in filter so you can be sure your water is always clean and safe.

Where to Stay on the Gold Coast

There are only a handful of hostels along the Gold Coast so be sure to book early. Here are my suggested places to stay at:

• BUNK Surfers Paradise (Surfers Paradise)
• Budds In Surfers (Surfers Paradise)
• Coolangatta YHA (Coolangatta)

How to Get Around the Gold Coast

Buses – Buses can get you just about everywhere you need to go on the Gold Coast. TransLink is the largest public transit operator and has buses that run from the south to the north side of the coast (and beyond). There’s also a NightLink night bus service for buses after midnight.

Fares start at 2.76 AUD and go up depending on how far you travel and whether you’re traveling off-peak or on-peak. Make sure you get a reloadable Go Card to save money as fares are much cheaper with one. Cards cost 10 AUD and are refundable.

Unlimited travel on Translink is 10 AUD per day.

Light rail – G:link, the regions light rail, runs along the Gold Coast highway. You’ll be able to reach all the main tourist spots and the fares are the same as the Translink public bus system. As with the bus, the Go Card will save you money on fares.

Ferries – You can explore the Gold Coast’s waterways (including Stradbroke Island) by using the region’s ferry and water taxi services. The vehicle ferry to Stradbroke Island costs around 88 AUD while the pedestrian ferry is 18 AUD return.

Taxi – Taxis are expensive here and should be avoided. Prices start at 4.50 AUD and go up by 2.50 AUD per kilometer. Skip them if you can!

Ridesharing – DiDi is the main ridesharing app here and is cheaper than taxis.

Bike rental – There are tons of bicycle trails around the Gold Coast! Daily rates per bicycle rental start around 35 AUD.

Car rental – You can get just about anywhere along the Gold Coast via public transit, but if you want to get off the tourist trail or travel inland, having a car rental is ideal. You can find rentals for around 60 AUD per day for a week-long rental.

When to Go to the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is busy year-round thanks to its consistent weather and nearly 300 days of sunshine per year. That’s what makes it such a great place to visit!

One of the best times to visit is near the end of April throughout May because the average daily temperature is between 17-27°C (62-80°F), making it one of the most comfortable times to be here. There aren’t too many crowds during this time and hotel prices are lower.

Mid-November to early December should be avoided if possible due to Schoolies Week, when students and their parents take holidays. The beaches get crowded, as do all the attractions. This extends through summer (which, in Australia, lasts until February). Daily highs hover around 27°C (80°F).

In October there’s the Gold Coast 600 (a car race), which brings in some 200,000 people — with inflated prices to boot. Be sure to book early if you’re visiting during this time.

How to Stay Safe on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is an incredibly safe place. People are friendly and helpful and you’re unlikely to get into trouble. Violent crime here is rare. Theft is rare but it does occur. When you go to the beach, leave your valuables at home just in case.

Most incidents tend to occur because visitors are not used to the country’s unique climate, so be sure you have plenty of sunscreen and stay as hydrated as possible. If you’re venturing out of the city, be mindful of wildlife, especially snakes and spiders. If you’re bitten, seek immediate care.

If you’re swimming, heed the red and yellow flags. Yellow flags indicate swimming conditions may be dangerous; red flags mean the beach is closed.

Solo female travelers generally feel safe here. However, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone at night intoxicated, etc.). For more information, check out one of the many solo female travel blogs on the web that can help more!

If you’re worried about travel scams, you can read about common travel scams to avoid here . There aren’t many in Australia though.

If you experience an emergency, dial 000 for assistance.

When in doubt, always trust your instincts. If a taxi driver seems shady, get out. If your hotel or accommodation is seedier than you thought, go somewhere else. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID, in case of an emergency.

The most important piece of safety advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. How To Spend 5 Days In Gold Coast: An Ideal Itinerary

If planning a trip to the Gold Coast in Queensland and not sure what to see and do, follow this 5-day see-it-all itinerary and travel the most on your Gold Coast Holiday.

Recently I had a chance to visit the most frequented place for Indian tourists in the Queensland region of Australia — the Gold Coast, during a blog trip with Queensland Tourism and Scoot Airlines.

A nearly 60-km expanse of photogenic beaches, the Gold Coast, that I, before my visit, expected to be no different than any other upcoming beach destination in Australia (dominated by water sports, traditional cafes, and a laid-back Australian life) started surprising me as soon as I get there.

As I explored one neighbourhood after the other, I realised that the Gold Coast had much more to offer than what I had initially thought it will. It wasn’t just another laid-back beach town in Australia (which in fact it was) but much more than that. There were nature trails, beaches, crazy unheard-of-before adventure tours, beautiful wildlife, cafes, casinos and everything else you can think of — and to actually see it all, I had to in fact extend my holiday and stay back another 3 nights.

So out of many different experiences, laughter, confusion, memories and my 8-day Gold Coast itinerary, these are a few handpicked experiences I would recommend you try. What I also recommend is staying for at least 5 days in Gold Coast to be able to soak it all in well!

I flew from India to Gold Coast on a Flyscoot flight , which is a low-frill budget airline. If, however, you are more of a business class person, check my Singapore airlines business class experience .

5 Days In Gold Coast: Itinerary

Day 1: introduction to gold  coast.

About 15min drive from the Gold Coast Airport lies one of the serenest and most popular surfing beaches — the Snapper Rocks and about a 1-minute drive away from the beach is the traditional D-Bar cafe.

Located on Point Danger, while overlooking the famous surf breaks, Cafe D’Bar offers a picturesque coastal dining experience, featuring local seaside art and homewares during the day and home to live music throughout the night.

On a perfect sunny day, as we had it, a satisfying breakfast, perfectly blended with cafe D’Bar’s traditional laid-back ambience is all you need to kickstart your real Aussie holiday.

A perfect place to go if you want to surf, and even if you don’t the Snapper Rocks beach (and the adjoining Coolangatta as well) will quintessentially introduce you to a true Aussie lifestyle near the shore(s) — that’s either beautiful and relaxing or active and adventurous.

If you’re into surfing, there can’t be a better place than the Snapper Rocks in the entire Gold Coast to try it, and even if not, it’s still a great place to watch others surfing as you relax and unwind. If you’re lucky, you might also spot whales further out in the ocean.

So spend a good share of your morning around the area, before you head to Currumbin Beach for lunch.

Nestled on Elephant Rock, The Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Life Saving Club offers visitors a view of the Gold Coast like no other place does. I completed (like literally!) my day with beautiful views of the ocean on my right and a filling (massively big!) veggie burger with some fries and a drink, before a few hours of walking in and around the sanctuary of Currumbin that was next in our list.

One of the prime experiences for anyone to be travelling to Australia, no matter what part of the country they are visiting, is spotting a Kangaroo and a Koala. But what if you also get to feed one and hug the other? Well, that’s what the wildlife sanctuary of Currumbin offers, in addition to a few other things.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, which in fact, is also a wildlife conservation organisation, offers Kangaroo feeding and Koala cuddling experiences. Just pay a 60 AUD entry fee (for adults) and explore its 27 hectares of rainforest, and with that, a few endangered species of reptiles, birds and other wildlife animals.

With over a dozen different shows and activities, one can spend an entire day at the park and not get bored. However, if short on time (yes, a 5-day trip to the Gold Coast is still not enough!) just try a few recommended activities like Kangaroo feeding and Koala cuddling (to complete your Aussie trip) and get going.

Surfers Paradise is the most happening and the very centre of the Gold Coast. It’s in the Surfers Paradise where most travellers and backpackers looking to get some sun, surf, and spend time partying can be found throughout the year.

A couple of hours stroll at the Surfers Paradise the day you ended up in the Gold Coast will help you get the essence and understand the town better There are moreover enough places to eat and get a few drinks around.

Day2: VISITING THE FREQUENTED

A must-see for everyone visiting the Gold Coast, SkyPoint Observation Deck unveils beautiful 360-degree views from the coast to the hinterland, giving you a fair idea of what to expect from the city — and that’s a bit more beautiful than you’ve seen in your life.

Breakfast at the Skypoint observation deck is a great way to kickstart your day. For 32 AUD (or just 15 AUD if you don’t want the breakfast and only the entry to the Skypoint Observation Desk), you get one full-day ticket to explore the Skypoint observation deck as well as enjoy a lovely buffet breakfast.

To make your visit to the Skypoint even memorable, however, just like we ended up doing try a 1-hour tour of the Skypoint Climb that offers unparalleled 360 views of the entire Gold Coast city.

Rising 270m into the air, SkyPoint Climb is Australia’s highest external building climb and is the entire southern hemisphere’s highest point. Tickets start from AUD 74 per person.

Climbing the Skypoint made me recall my first bungy jumping experience in Malaysia.

From Kangaroo feeding to adult-thrill rides, learning about the Aboriginals to a Madagascar-themed set up for kids, the theme park of Dreamland has something for everyone.

One can spend an entire day inside the premises and not get bored — after all, it’s the biggest theme park in the entire Gold Coast and one of the biggest in Australia. We had spent almost 4 hours trying a few thrill rides in addition to activities like holding a Python, Tiger presentation, and an interactive walk-through experience celebrating Aboriginal culture, wildlife and stories of native Australia.

There are almost 50 rides and attractions in the park in total, with a lovely in-house restaurant too (called the Billabong Restaurant) for a buffet lunch.

It’s a lovely place to spend a day for families, especially for families with kids under 15 years old as the entire place offers a lovely fantasy world. Just make sure you plan a visit on a weekday and not on a school or a public holiday, as it may get quite busy and crowded.

Among all other things to appreciate about Australia, one thing is the fact that a big chunk of Australians, every day, is becoming Vegan. And to appreciate and understand that fact a little more, a visit to one of the many vegan restaurants across Gold Coast (or whatever part of Australia you’re visiting) is a must.

For vegan food in Gold Coast, the recommended stop is Greenhouse Canteen & Bar. Just try one of the many platters they’ve complemented with a drink to conclude your day beautifully.

Day3: GOING OFFBEAT

If you think that the Gold Coast is all about exploring beaches and trying water sports, think again. Because there is enough to see and do on the Gold Coast that has nothing to do with the sea and one such thing that tops the list is a hot air ballooning ride. It was much better than my Hot air balloon tour in Goa .

A morning Hot Air Balloon ride is an exceptional way to watch the sunrise over Surfers Paradise as well as the rolling hills of the majestic Gold Coast Hinterland. The only problem is, you will have to wake super-early, but trust me if you can handle that, a hot air balloon ride may just be the most memorable experience of your entire holiday on the Gold Coast.

Prices start at AUD 280 which also includes a buffet breakfast followed by the ride & a glass of champagne at a local vineyard with return transfers, of course!

Though there are a few companies doing the same tour, I did it with Southern Cross 4WD Tours and totally recommend them. It took a total of 5 hours to cover the two places, a half an hour’s drive on both sides and a quick stop-over at a cosy café on-site for some freshly baked cookies and afternoon tea.

Though I was staying at the hotel QT itself and The Bazaar happened to be their in-house restaurant, a dinner at the Bazaar is certainly recommended. Popular among locals and tourists alike, The Bazaar offers a fine buffet-style dining experience with food ranging from smoked beef to lobsters to veg Pizzas.

They also offer a great selection of locally brewed beer for enthusiastic beer-guzzlers (try a Balter though!). Even if you wished to eat someplace else, a quick visit to The Bazaar during one of the evenings while you’re on the Gold Coast is totally recommended.

DAY 4: SHOPPING + FUN TOURS

Offering an expansive collection of luxury, iconic global brands and leading Australian retailers, Pacific Fair is the Gold Coast’s unmissable shopping and dining destination. It has over 400 stores all belonging to luxury and iconic retailer brands making it exclusive in the entire Queensland if you are looking for a blend of the world’s best brands.

The ambience of the Pacific Fair is moreover worth appreciating which includes various cosy sitting pods and community areas making it a great place to wander through, even if you are not going to be shopping much.

Pacific Fair is moreover a great place to find a great section of food. Post our three-hour shopping spree, we had our lunch at a place called Bin 232 — which I particularly loved for its great selection of cocktails and lively atmosphere.

For those who are not into surfing or find solo jet-ski hire a bit too much to handle, a Jet Boating ride is a great option to try some adventure water sports while you’re on the Gold Coast.

A 55-min of fun and adventure, the ride that takes you through a 35km stretch of Moreton Bay Marine Park, with wonderful scenery and sightseeing at your disposal.

Enjoy 360-degree spins, high-speed drifting, power slides, beach-buzzing, and other exciting manoeuvres through the beautiful, pristine waterways. If you’re lucky, you may also end up spotting some wild dolphin spotting.

For a tour, as I had it, I can recommend Paradise Jet Boating located on the Main Beach, which happens to be Australia’s only jetboat tour to be certified by Eco Australia — recognising a commitment to Eco-sustainability, customer safety, quality experience, and great service.

No wonder, a ride   in a firetruck and holding a real working water-hose is on everyone’s wishlist – especially during their early days of life. So for those travelling with kids, something as crazy as a fire truck ride and posing and clicking pictures while holding a fire nozzle and wearing real Fire Helmets can be an exceptional thing to do while in the Gold Coast.

Both, the Fire Truck Tour and The Jet Boating take less than two hours in total to finish.

Located right in the centre of Surfers Paradise, the in-inhouse restaurant of The Island Hotel is a great place for a casual dining experience.

With impressive burgers, seafood, steaks, wood oven pizzas, and fresh locally-sourced produce, The Island Bistro is certainly a place I would like to recommend among all the places I had tried during my stay in the Gold Coast. And if you have a taste for some live music, the Island Rooftop (the bar-with-a-view) is a great place to chill out and relax after the food over a few cocktails, or your usual beer.

During our visit, we had a lovely jazz- band playing for us.

DAY 5: THE HIGHLIGHTED LADY ELLIOT ISLAND & THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

Any trip to Australia is incomplete without visiting and exploring the rich coral life at the Great Barrier Reef. And if you’re visiting the eastern coast of the country, it becomes even more crucial. From Gold Coast, you can access the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef and with it, perhaps one of the most unspoiled and unexplored islands in the region: Lady Elliot Island.

The island is regarded as one of the best snorkelling and diving locations on the reef, famous for its unspoiled coral reef and an amazing array of marine life.

Located at about a 1.5-hour flight from the Gold Coast (or 100-min to be precise) Lady Elliot Island can be explored during a day trip from the Gold Coast (as well as from Brisbane). However, if you have time a one-night stay is totally advised to enjoy the place even more.

The Gold Coast to Lady Elliot Island flight is itself a highlight that offers scenic views of the Gold Coast, North and South Stradbroke Islands, Moreton Island and Fraser Island.

The day trip (that starts with a hotel pickup at 5:45 in the morning and finishes at around 5 in the evening with a hotel drop) includes a brief 1-hour snorkelling trip with a 15 min glass-bottom boat ride. During most days, the visitors get to spot (and even swim with) a turtle and/or a manta-ray. The trip also includes an in-flight breakfast and a  buffet lunch with a choice of wine, beer, and soft drinks.

A trip to Lady Elliot Island is certainly going to be the highlight of the Gold Coast Itinerary.

Conclude your Gold Coast Itinerary with a cheer and a festive vibe with a visit to the Night quarters in Helensvale: a weekend market full of colourful market stalls, exotic street food and live music all stocked up into one happy playground. At Nightquarter, you will find everything: culture, food, art, fashion, music and local talent of every kind.

The entire place is moreover so photogenic that you’re going to end up clicking more pictures here than during your entire trip.

For those looking for a happy ending, try a Nutella Ice-cream cookie at the Nightquarter after the food.

Where To Stay In Gold Coast

Gold Coast has enough accommodation options, ranging from budget backpacking hostels to high-end hotels, with most of the hotels being located at the Surfers Paradise.

• During my visit to the Gold Coast, I stayed at three places in total in the town and found all three worth recommending as they all served a very different niche. So, to those looking for a high-end business class sort of ambience, can try QT Gold Coast . At prices still not too brutal to afford, the QT offers a great luxury experience.
• For almost a similar price, but a more cozy, loud and friendly ambience, try The Island Hotel . Located right in the center of the Surfers Paradise, the Island Hotel is only a stone through away from most attractions and nightclubs in the town.
• If, however, your budget is comparatively less and you’re looking for a friendly backpacking hostel, I can recommend Surfers Paradise YHA . Tucked away from the crowded centre the hostel offers a great friendly atmosphere, with a big common room, a communal kitchen, and a TV room. And since the hostel is a little detached from the city centre, they offer a free pick-up and drop too (four times a day) to make it easier for their guests to commute to the city center. So enjoy the perks of staying in a quieter neighborhood while still having virtually everything at your disposal.

If you are looking for cheap flight tickets from India to the Gold Coast, I will suggest checking out fares for Scoot Airlines. They’ve been flying to the Gold Coast in addition to a few other destinations in Australia for amazingly cheaper prices. Though a low-cost airline, for those who appreciate a little more comfort they have a premium economy and business class too. I also flew to the Gold Coast with The Scoot airlines.

• Do I need a passport to travel to the Gold Coast? All international visitors to Australia will need a valid passport and an Australian visa or Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) which you will need to apply for before you arrive. Visa types will depend on the length of stay and your visit purpose, but please check before departing your country of origin if you need a visa to visit Australia. If you are arriving via a domestic service into the Gold Coast, you are not crossing any international borders and won’t be required to pass through customs. • Do I need to tip on the Gold Coast? Tipping is not required in Australia but is always appreciated should you feel the service received was exemplary. Tip jars may be present on counters at some cafes, restaurants and tour operators, but it’s discretionary rather than expected to provide a tip and is usually spilt at the end of the day with all staff who have worked that shift. Most Australians leave the change if it’s under a few dollars, which is optional also.
• Is the Gold Coast accessible? The Gold Coast is an inclusive and welcoming destination for all, and accessibility is an integral part of the Gold Coast visitor experience. Upon arrival at the Gold Coast Airport, you’ll find an Eagle Hoist to assist passengers with special needs, accessible parking close to the airport entrance and transport options available across both private and public sectors just outside the terminal too. Most Gold Coast hotels, resorts, apartments, private homes and caravan parks offer accessible accommodation options. Public facilities include accessible toilets and change rooms, you’ll find local parks with accessible playground equipment and public swimming pools with hoists and chairlift access, and shopping centres, cafes, restaurants and theme parks all provide level accessible areas, ramped access, automatic doors and lift access. • What is Australia’s emergency contact number? In an emergency, call 000. If you need urgent help from the police, fire or ambulance service while visiting the Gold Coast, you should call 000 immediately and Australia’s Telecommunications provider Telstra will answer the call and transfer you, along with information about your location, to the emergency service you request.
• How do I stay safe at the beach? Surrounded by waterways, and with the open ocean lapping our Gold Coast shores, it’s essential to know how to stay safe when visiting our beaches. Always choose a beach to swim at that is patrolled by Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) lifesavers and only swim between the flags. Flags represent the area that is patrolled by surf lifesavers (they wear red and yellow) and indicate the safest place to swim at the beach. Read the safety signs located between the flags before entering the water, and if you’re unsure, ask a surf lifesaver for advice on local swimming and surfing conditions. Inexperienced swimmers should not swim alone, and children should always be supervised by an adult, even when surf lifesavers are present. Don’t forget to put on plenty of SPF 50+ sunscreen also, and choose a reef-safe brand if you can too, which protects not just your skin, but our marine life also.
• What travel tips should I know before arriving on the Gold Coast? The Gold Coast is a friendly and relaxed place to visit but knowing a few local tips before you arrive is a good idea. We’d recommend you pack high-protection sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat, and if you plan to go swimming, a rash shirt to protect you from the sun while you are enjoying the water. Pack your swimwear for all adventures, as there are plenty of places to take a dip, but remember, it’s safest to swim at patrolled beaches and only swim between the flags. Dress codes do apply at some establishments, including public bars, surf clubs, hotels, golf clubs and nightclubs and you may be asked to provide ID. Pack a light jacket during cooler months or if you plan to go out at night.
• Where can I find Visitor Information Centres? The Gold Coast has two Visitor Information Centres conveniently located at the Gold Coast Airport and in Surfers Paradise. You’ll find all the information you need for exploring the Gold Coast including maps, brochures and itineraries and endless options for things to do. Friendly assistants will help with advice on how to make bookings for local tours, purchase tickets for theme parks, book accommodation, restaurants and more, plus give you local insights from what to wear, where to eat, how and where to catch public transport and how to make the most of your time on the Gold Coast.
• How many days do I need to enjoy the Gold Coast? There are so many ways to enjoy the Gold Coast, and you could stay for weeks and still not see and do all that is on offer. But we recommend spending at least five days on the Gold Coast to experience our world-class beaches and iconic surf culture, sample some of our fresh local cuisine, do a spot of shopping, take a few tours and still have ample time to relax and enjoy our laid-back coastal lifestyle.
