Summary [ ]

Clara , a young girl who just moved to the USS Enterprise -D with her father, Ensign Sutter , talks to Counselor Deanna Troi , discussing the nature of her imaginary friend named Isabella . Troi believes that Clara imagined Isabella as she moves from ship to ship often due to her father's career, and hasn't had the opportunity to sustain a friendship.

While the Enterprise explores the nebula, a small sphere of energy enters the Enterprise and roams about the corridors , sickbay , and finally the arboretum , where Clara is assisting Keiko O'Brien in planting nasturtium seeds. While there talking to the invisible Isabella, to her surprise, the imaginary friend appears to Clara in the arboretum seemingly in the flesh.

Act One [ ]

Isabella suggests to Clara that they explore the Enterprise together, despite the fact that Clara thinks she should inform her father. But Isabella insists that they go anyway and they leave the arboretum. The two spend all their time together. Increasingly, Isabella gets Clara into trouble by having her do things she knows are wrong, and leading her into off-limit places, including main engineering , where Data , Geordi La Forge , and her father Sutter were discussing potential names for the nebula. After his superior officer La Forge expresses his annoyance at Clara's presence in engineering, Sutter sternly orders that Clara return to their quarters. When Clara leaves, Isabella reappears. She says she needs to disappear while she is around the adults.

Meanwhile, the Enterprise is experiencing unexplained drops in velocity. La Forge thinks the ship is experiencing drag, as the engines are producing the same output. The rate of change in velocity decreases faster, but then Isabella tells Clara to wait and disappears. She returns, and the ship's velocity is back to expected. In engineering, Data examines this change in velocity and reports that it appears the problem simply corrected itself.

Act Two [ ]

Senior staff discuss FGC 47

" Collect your samples, Mr. La Forge. We'll proceed with caution. "

Generally others on the ship cannot see Isabella although Worf sees her when Clara and Isabella run into him in a corridor when they aren't paying attention. Worf too orders the young Sutter back to her quarters but after he enters a turbolift , Clara and Isabella return to running down the corridor. While talking to La Forge in engineering, Ensign Sutter asks him if he had parents serving in Starfleet when he was a child. La Forge says yes, his father was an exozoologist and his mother was in the command division and served on an outpost near the Neutral Zone . Ensign Sutter remarks that the experience must have been unpleasant for him, having to always be on the move. La Forge says that children are pretty resilient and as long as they know their parents love them, they can usually handle anything life throws at them.

Later on, Clara enters Ten Forward . Children on the Enterprise are usually prohibited from entering Ten Forward without an adult but Guinan allows it, taking on Clara as her personal guest. She has Clara sit up on the bar and serves her and Isabella papalla juice . Isabella is invisible during this time, but Guinan pretends, thinking Clara is pretending, too. She tells Clara that when she was her age, her best imaginary friend was a Tarcassian razor beast that put her to sleep every night. Counselor Troi then enters and escorts Clara out of Ten Forward.

Eventually, Troi sees that Isabella is getting Clara into enough trouble that Clara has to be with other children her age. Troi insists that Clara leave her friend alone to go play with others. She comes to invite Clara to a ceramics class, without Isabella. They leave and she reappears, now angry.

Act Three [ ]

The Enterprise is shaken again by the drag on the ship slowing it down. It stabilizes, but the drag coefficient is still unexplained. In engineering, La Forge and Sutter have determined there is a highly-charged form of plasma creating resonances on impact with the ship. They don't know how many there are, but they can modify the deflector dish to illuminate them for counting. They find, remarkably, an irregular lattice of about 47 million of the strands.

Meanwhile, Troi takes Clara to meet Worf's son Alexander at the class, and they create some clay sculptures together. Isabella, however, is causing trouble, first, by annoying Troi, knocking down her cup in her quarters, twice. Then, she ruins a Klingon -style clay cup Alexander was creating for his father when he isn't looking. He believes Clara caused it and complains to her. An upset Clara goes to the arboretum, crying. When Isabella returns, she is very angry that she left her. Saying she liked her and wanted to protect her earlier, now she doesn't care and says, " When the others come, you can die along with everyone else. "

Act Four [ ]

The strands are impeding the Enterprise 's ability to leave the nebula. They can't go to warp, and are forced to muddle through.

Meanwhile, Troi is concerned about her approach with Clara in Ten Forward. Guinan sits down at her table and admits to her imaginary friend, and says a child shouldn't need to give that up just because they get older. Then, Troi is called to the Sutters' quarters by Ensign Sutter when Clara is having trouble going to sleep because Isabella has been threatening her. Clara now tells Troi that Isabella isn't imaginary anymore, and that she and others like her will kill everyone aboard. Troi tries to assure Clara that sometimes the mind can imagine things that are just as frightening as something real. Troi tells her there is no way Isabella can hurt anyone and guides her to her room to search for her and then she suddenly appears and attacks Troi, who is knocked unconscious in Clara's closet .

Act Five [ ]

Afterwards, while Troi is being treated in sickbay by Dr. Crusher , Clara is brought in by Nurse Ogawa . Clara talks to her father and then talks to Captain Picard . The ship then shakes again and Picard orders the ship to stop. An energy being comes toward the Enterprise and starts to drain the shields . Then, more come. Picard decides to try to talk to Isabella in the arboretum.

Picard appeals to Isabella to show herself in the arboretum. Suddenly, Isabella makes herself visible to everyone. The crew learns that Isabella is actually an energy-based lifeform whose home is the nebula outside the ship. Isabella claims to Picard that she came to the Enterprise because the energy generated by the ship's graviton field generators are far richer than their normal sources of power. Picard tells Isabella that there are other ways to provide power and that her people should not destroy them. Isabella tells Picard that they should be destroyed anyway, because of the way the adults treat Clara. Picard begins to talk to her about the concept of Human parenting and he explains that the rules are there for her protection, and even Clara will make some rules for her children when she eventually grows up. Clara asks Isabella not to hurt them and wishes to still be her best friend, if she would like. Isabella is convinced and allows the ship to pass safely through the nebula. Before leaving, Picard keeps his promise to provide energy to the beings living in FGC-47 by having La Forge bring the ship's warp engines to full power and to direct that energy into the nebula. Isabella appears one last time to Clara in her bedroom and apologizes for frightening her. She tells Clara she never had a friend before and hopes she will return to the nebula someday. The Enterprise departs FGC-47 for open space.

Memorable quotes [ ]

" So, what are we gonna call this nebula? FGC- 47 just doesn't have the proper ring to it. " " Why don't we call it Sutter's Cloud? " " No, I was thinking about something more along the lines of the La Forge Nebula. It has sort of a majestic sound, don't you think? " " Given the selections, I prefer FGC-47. "

" It's just, I've never seen you before, not for real. " " Well, now you can see me for real. Doesn't that make you happy? "

" It is interesting that people try to find meaningful patterns in things that are essentially random. I have noticed that the images they perceive can sometimes suggest what they are thinking about at that particular moment. Besides, it is clearly a bunny rabbit. "

" I was going to protect you, Clara. I liked you. Now, I don't care. Now, when the others come, you can die along with everyone else! "

" Sounds scary! " " Oh it was! Especially when he smiled. "

" Can you only communicate by threatening a small child? "

Background information [ ]

Production history [ ].

  • Final draft script, and production meeting: 24 February 1992 ( [1] ; "The Perfect Mate" call sheet )
  • Filmed: 26 February 1992 – 5 March 1992
  • Special effects inserts filmed: 6 March 1992
  • Premiere airdate: 4 May 1992
  • First UK airdate: 17 May 1995

Story and script [ ]

  • Rick Berman was an early supporter of this episode's premise. He commented, " Where else but in science fiction could you do an idea about an imaginary friend who turns out not to be imaginary? It's a story about an alien who takes the form of a little girl's imaginary friend and begins to perceive our world through the eyes of a child. " ( Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages , p. 245)
  • The script for "Imaginary Friend" passed through several freelancers' hands before the final rewrite was given to Brannon Braga . While Isabella was a curious and friendly alien in earlier drafts, Braga took the character in a darker direction. ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion  (2nd ed., p. 201)) Braga recalled, " It wasn't quite working in its original guise and Jeri Taylor and Peter Fields and I broke the story and tried to make the imaginary friend more of a bad seed. Before, it was more like Puff the Magic Dragon and it was that the alien was simply curious and didn't have an evil intent. It just kind of laid there and was playful fluff. We decided to make the alien malevolent, where it's mean to the kid. " ( Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages , p. 245)
  • A working title for this episode was "Invisible Friend". ( "The Perfect Mate" call sheet , [2] )
  • Earlier scripts did not have Guinan appearing in this episode at all. When Whoopi Goldberg became available, her character was written in only days before shooting began. The cloud-watching scene with Data was originally written for Crusher and Troi, and later Guinan and Troi. ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion  (2nd ed., p. 201))

Reception [ ]

  • Brannon Braga named this episode's script as the most gratifying he had written in the fifth season . He credited this for the chance to write a show in which children played a large role. He commented, " I've taken to calling it Romper Room: The Next Generation . Kid stories appeal by their very nature. There's an innocence to kids and kids can have conflict. The funny thing about kid shows in the Star Trek universe is you can get conflict with kids because they're not developed yet like our perfect adults. In a strange kind of way, kids can have more problems and conflict than our regulars. They can still be imperfect. It is a fun episode and hopefully people won't be so sick of seeing children on the show. " ( Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages , p. 245)
  • In another interview, Braga admitted, " I think it's one that people don't like very much. It was a cute little story, maybe a little predictable. The concept might have been better as a half-hour Twilight Zone episode than an hour of The Next Generation . " ( Star Trek: The Next Generation 365 , p. 257)
  • Rick Berman was pleased with the final episode. " I think it turned out quite nicely, and we got two great performances. It's very difficult to work with kids because they're not as experienced and you only get them for a few hours a day […] I would not rank this as one of my favorites for the season, but it was a lot of fun. " ( Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages , p. 245)
  • Herbert J. Wright was fond of neither the premise nor the finished episode. He remarked, " It's not a show that dealt with our regulars and not a show that needed to be on Star Trek . I think Michael [Piller] was trying to do E.T. , but what made that film work is hard to do on Star Trek aboard the Enterprise . E.T. was an alien in a suburban neighborhood trying to get home. It was like the lost pet that turns out to be a genius alien. But 'Invisible Friend's' problem was how do you have, in effect, an adolescent alien? " Wright was also displeased with the shift in story direction exemplified by this episode. He opined, " I think the problem is that when you narrow your focus to what kind of show you want to do to the point where you're doing 90 percent personal stories and you're trying to do them in outer space on a 24th century starship, you're going to run into a brick wall and there's only so many times you can do that. " ( Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages , p. 245)
  • A mission report for this episode by John Sayers was published in The Official Star Trek: The Next Generation Magazine  issue 21 , pp. 37-39.

Star Trek: Who is Isabella?

T he Star Trek franchise has explored concepts beyond the bounds of science fiction. Across countless episodes, they've delved into fantastical ideas and absurd flights of fancy. The show sports complex technical details one week and silly cartoon nonsense the next. When the writers wanted to pitch something wild, they developed an alien with the necessary biological characteristics. Someone wanted to tell the story of the Enterprise-D crew held hostage by a child's imaginary friend, so they invented Isabella.

Gabrielle Beaumont made history in 1989 when she directed "Booby Trap," the 54th episode of the Star Trek franchise and the first directed by a woman. Beaumont returned to The Next Generation six times over the next five years. Her career stretched far beyond the franchise into various hit TV shows and a few films. Her fifth entry, "Imaginary Friend," introduced Isabella to the world.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Who Is General Martok?

Isabella's role in star trek.

Isabella is Clara Sutter's imaginary friend. Clara was one of many children who lived on the Starship Enterprise-D . Many Starfleet crew members brought their kids to work, letting them grow up like military brats with regular upheaval and constant relocation. Clara's father, Ensign Sutter, only appeared in one episode. Clara struggled to make friends, regularly leaving vessels shortly after adjusting to her new conditions. Like many lonely kids, she created an imaginary friend named Isabella. Isabella resembled a young lady approximately Clara's age. Clara regularly mentioned Isabella, but the adults couldn't see her.

Isabella began life as a creation of Clara's mind. "Imaginary Friend" depicts an alien appearing aboard the Enterprise-D to scout the ship as an energy source. The energy-based entity adopted Isabella's form. When adults approached, she became invisible to continue blending in. Isabella regularly leads Clara into the ship's dangerous off-limits areas. When Clara refuses to break the rules, Isabella threatens her. Donna Troi searches Clara's room to ease her fears, but Isabella appears and blasts Troi with an energy beam. Clara tells her dad, who relates the issue to Captain Picard . The Enterprise crew must overcome the imaginary menace before she endangers the vessel.

What happens to Isabella?

After Clara explains Isabella to her dad, Picard and the crew work to uncover her identity. They discover the energy-based entity operating as Isabella and hunt her down. Isabella and other members of her species drain power from the Enterprise-D's shields, threatening the crew. Picard finds Isabella in the ship's arboretum. He reasons with her, asking why she'd attack the vessel. Isabella's childlike perspective led her to misinterpret the adult crew members' rules as dictatorial demands. She believed Clara to be a prisoner and the adults her oppressors. She accuses Picard of cruelty and mistreatment, but he explains the circumstances. Picard outlines his duties as an adult to set boundaries and protect children from dangerous circumstances. Picard uses Clara as an example, noting that she will likely set rules for her children when she grows up. Isabella gradually understands his explanation and apologizes for her behavior. She allows the Enterprise-D to pass safely through her home nebula. Before she leaves, she apologizes to Clara and promises she'll try to visit her again when she grows up. Neither appeared in any later episodes, ending their story.

Who plays Isabella in Star Trek ?

Shay Astar plays Isabella in Star Trek . Astar was eleven years old when the show aired. The year before, she appeared in the 1991 comedy, Ernest Scared Stupid . She remains best known for her three-year turn as August Leffler on 3rd Rock From the Sun . The character appeared regularly as Joseph Gordon Levitt's character's first stable girlfriend. Her most recent credits include a one-episode appearance in Shameless , a bit part in Lucky McKee's All Cheerleaders Die , and the title role in Rose McGowan's 2017 short film Ruth . Astar is also a musician who released her debut album, Blue Music , in 2010. Though Astar doesn't pop up often, she brings a strong performance to every project she appears in.

Isabella is a bizarre Star Trek antagonist. The show frequently introduces otherworldly beings that pose physical threats, relying on the heroes to find a nonviolent solution. Isabella has godlike energy powers, but her unique perspective makes her more dangerous than most. Picard solves the problem by gently explaining the concept of responsibility to a child. While Clara, her dad, and her imaginary friend never return to the spotlight, the story of Isabella demonstrates a fascinating spout of creativity in the Star Trek writer's room. "Imaginary Friend" is the story of a child learning why people keep telling her what to do and deciding to accept the explanation. It's arguably a coming-of-age episode.

Edit locked.

  • Nightmare Fuel : "Isabella" is, quite frankly, kind of terrifying, with a flat monotone voice and really dead eyes. It really says a lot of Clara's loneliness that she still clings to Isabella for as long as she does.
  • Isabella is played by a very young Shay Astar, one of those actresses you've probably seen in all sorts of stuff—most notably, Ernest Scared Stupid , a recurring role on 3rd Rock from the Sun , and All Cheerleaders Die .
  • As for Noley Thornton, she went on to play another endearing little girl on the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode " Shadowplay ."
  • The Woobie : Clara's dad keeps getting posted to new ships, and even she acknowledges how she never gets to make any friends as a result. And then Isabella screws things up for her when she tries to make friends with Alexander. Poor Clara.

Star Trek The Next Generation: Imaginary Friend

Coincidentally, I just re-watched this a few nights ago. I'm not a fan of this episode, but the Clara Stutter actress also guest stared in a season 2 episode of DS9 called Shadowplay that I like, so I marathoned both. She does a great job in both and is probably the only thing that I like about this episode.

Yes, Shadowplay is much better! As to the fact that a committee wrote this - I think that because it was a poor idea, it kept getting passed along. And one theme, the idea that children who have fewer rights are being mistreated (rather than protected) is an interesting one - because it is really easy to go from protection to mistreatment. But to do that in an interesting manner would have required a completely different story.

I was assuming that the child who played Isabella was intentionally wooden, so as to let the audience know that she didn't really understand human interaction. Far from being bad acting, it seemed to me that the child was effectively creepy as Isabella, which is an amazing thing for a kid to pull off. It's true that it's a terrible episode, but at least the child is a girl this time! We've had boys, boys, boys, and boys, to the extent that I wondered where adult women came from, since it seemed as if the girls must have been drowned at birth. :-)

Corylea, good point about the young actress. And that it was girls for a change. :)

TNG Cast Reflects On Most Memorable Guest Stars

star trek tng isabella

Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted in syndication the week of September 28, 1987. So, believe it or not, the 25th anniversary of the series that captured lightning in a bottle… again, is upon us. Events of all kinds have been occurring in the Star Trek universe, from the release of TNG Blu-rays to a handful of full-cast convention appearances. StarTrek.com thought it’d be revealing, informative and entertaining to reach out to as many full-time first-season TNG actors as we could corral and ask each of them to answer six questions. Today, in part three of our cast interview, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Wil Wheaton and Denise Crosby answer the following question: TNG welcomed a lot of great guest stars over the years. Who were you personally most excited to meet and/or share scenes with – and why?

star trek tng isabella

Brent Spiner: Whoopi (Goldberg), although she was recurring. Saul Rubinek. I knew Saul already, but I loved working with him. I’d worked with Jean Simmons before. I didn’t really get to work with her in the episode, but it was just great having her around. I think, if you made a list of all of the actors who’ve been on Star Trek , in all of its incarnations, it’s a pretty impressive bunch of people, acting-wise. Every series had wonderful regular actors, and the guest stars were incredible. The films had really interesting people. It’s a pretty interesting batch of folks.

Denise Crosby: My favorite guest star was Christopher McDonald, who played Lt. Castillo in “ Yesterday’s Enterprise .” I have never laughed so hard in my life! We had a great connection right from the start...Chris and I would go on to play husband and wife in a film called Divorce: A Contemporary Western , and I turned around and did a guest appearance on his legal drama he did for CBS. Jonathan Frakes:

star trek tng isabella

You probably know I'm going to say this, but to direct… I was honored to work with the talented and beautiful Jean Simmons. I just thought she was spectacular. Also, like everybody else , I’m a huge John de Lancie fan. I loved Michelle Forbes and Carolyn McCormick, who played Minuet. I have a soft spot for all these people in my heart. And the idea that Stephen Hawking was on the show, that Colin Powell came to visit, that Mae Jemison was on the show… that’s just nuts. Then there are the people who don’t admit they were on the show, like Ashley Judd and Teri Hatcher. Gates McFadden: My two biggest thrills were in the movies.  (We had) Malcolm McDowell, who’ s an awesome actor, and Tom Morello, who’s an unbelievable guitarist. In episodes, (we had) Stephen Hawking, who was brilliant and funny, Jean Simmons, who was very classy, and Madeleine Al bright, w ho was super-smart and funny (when she visited the set).Michael Dorn: I loved Jean Si mmons, Jo hn Anderson, and John Colicos. Along with being a joy to work with, you "saw" why they are stars.Marina Sirtis: If you look back, when they were really good guests stars on the show, someone didn’t work very much that week, and it was usually me. The only really spectacular guest star, or important Star Trek guest star that I got to work with was Jimmy Doohan. Of course, I knew him from the Star Trek conventions and the Star Trek functions we’d been to together, etc. He was such a delightful man, a sweetheart. It was lovely working with him. He still had it. He came prepared. He knew his lines, which can’t be said for some of the younger g uest stars w e had; no names. So tha t w as great, but I never got to work with Jean Simmons, which I would have loved to have done . I n ever got to work with Leonard Nimoy, which I would have loved to have done. De Kelley, again, never worked with him. Patrick and Brent got the good guest stars, and that’s understandable. The two most popular characters get good gigs. That’s the way it goes on TV.Visit StarTrek.comagain tomorrow, as the TNG cast discusses which TNG film they considered the best working experience. Isabella's video comes amid her continued health battle. She was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a tumor that starts in the back part of the brain. Earlier this month, Isabella revealed in a new YouTube vlog that she needed a third craniotomy one month after her second.

The procedure caused her chemotherapy treatment to be pushed back a month. It also left her in a lot of pain.

"It's not as bad as the first time but I'm really in pain. They do give me pain medicine...they don't work that well on me. So I'm in a lot of pain," she confessed, before bursting into tears. "My head really, really hurts right now. Not gonna lie, I've been crying a lot. I'm in a lot of pain. It's not as bad as last time... my face isn't as puffy but it literally hurts to do anything."

She hopes to be done with chemotherapy treatment this summer and to return to school at USC in Los Angeles where she started as a freshman before being diagnosed.

Quotes

Isabella : I came to say I'm sorry I frightened you.

Clara Sutter : That's okay.

Isabella : And I misled you. I wasn't really your Isabella.

Clara Sutter : For a while you were.

[first lines]

Clara Sutter : I like to cook all kinds of stuff, like yogurt and raisin salad, chocolate chip pancakes and... purple omelets.

Counselor Deanna Troi : [disgusted]  Purple omelets?

Clara Sutter : You put grape juice in the eggs. Isabella doesn't like it very much. She says it tastes funny.

Counselor Deanna Troi : I can see her point.

[Guinan and Clara talk about imaginary friends]

Clara Sutter : If the other grown-ups don't understand, how come you do?

Guinan : Well, maybe because when I was your age, I had one.

Clara Sutter : You did?

Guinan : Mmm.

Clara Sutter : What was she like?

Guinan : It... wasn't a she.

Clara Sutter : What was *he* like?

Guinan : It wasn't a he.

Clara Sutter : 'It'?

Guinan : It was a Tarcassian razor beast. It had dark brown fur and gold eyes and huge spiny wings, and it would fly past so fast nobody could see it but me.

Clara Sutter : Sounds scary.

Guinan : Oh, it was. Especially when he smiled.

Counselor Deanna Troi : Maybe you could draw me a picture. I'd love to see what she looks like.

Clara Sutter : You don't think she's real.

Counselor Deanna Troi : I think she's real for you, and THAT is real enough for me.

How gophers golfer isabella mccauley climbed atop the big ten with a comeback for the ages.

Isabella McCauley isn't much of a scoreboard-watcher. Midway through Sunday's final round of the Big Ten women's golf championships, the Gophers sophomore stole one quick glance at the leaderboard, just to get an idea of what it would take to contend for the title.

"On my ninth hole, I made a birdie from a pretty tough spot in the rough," she said. "That definitely brought me to a place where I was like, 'Wow, this could be a pretty special day.' And it just kind of continued."

Special turned out to be an understatement. After she began the day in 18th place, McCauley's dream round — an astonishing 8-under-par 64 — catapulted her to a share of the Big Ten championship. That score tied the course record at Bulle Rock Golf Course in Havre de Grace, Md., which hosted five LPGA Championships, a major, from 2005 to 2009.

A former Simley High School star and state Class 3A champion, McCauley lopped 10 strokes off her opening-round 74 on the tournament's final day. She started her round on the back nine, and that escape on No. 18 sparked a run that turned a good round into a spectacular one.

McCauley birdied the next three holes, too, on her way to the Gophers' first Big Ten individual title since Kate Hughes won in 1989. McCauley's three-day score of 209 was 7 under, tying her for the crown with Michigan's Monet Chun and Indiana's Caroline Craig.

Gophers coach Rhyll Brinsmead hoped McCauley could shoot well enough Sunday to climb into the top 10. Brinsmead wasn't expecting a championship, but she wasn't completely surprised either.

"It's pretty remarkable," Brinsmead said. "But if anybody's going to do it, Bella is going to do it. For a young person to go out on that stage of that magnitude and shoot a 64, it's pretty cool."

Sign up for our Gophers Update newsletter

McCauley has done plenty of cool things in her stellar career, but she couldn't recall ever making such a giant leap up the leaderboard or sinking four consecutive birdies. She managed only one birdie in Friday's opening round, ending a cold, windy day tied for 25th.

Her second-round goal was to hit closer to the pins to set herself up for more birdies, then make those putts. McCauley figured par or slightly under would be "a really great round of golf," and accurate putting gave her a 1-under 71 to move her up to 18th place. Sunday morning was more emotional.

Seniors make up half of the Gophers' eight-player roster, and McCauley wanted to support and celebrate her friends in their final college tournament. Her primary aim was to enjoy the day, but she had something more on her mind.

"Everyone was trying to savor the moment," said McCauley, who tied for second in last year's Big Ten championships. "But I also knew we had a little bit of a job to finish."

After four days on the course, Bulle Rock's mysteries had become clearer to her. The putts were falling early, boosting her confidence. The birdies at holes 18, 1, 2 and 3 made her believe she had a shot to win.

Brinsmead believed it, too. She was following a different Gophers golfer, but she was getting text updates from McCauley's father, Sean, who was at the tournament.

"He was sending me birdie emojis," she said. "The text chain was like: 'Another. Another. Another.' It just started rolling."

After McCauley finished her round, she had to wait to see whether her score would hold up. She watched with Brinsmead and her teammates as Craig missed a short birdie putt on No. 18, preserving the three-way tie for first.

One of McCauley's goals entering the 2023-24 season was to win a college tournament for the first time. She did that in last fall's opener, the Boilermaker Classic .

Now she will go into next month's NCAA regionals as a two-time champion, thanks to an unforgettable round.

"This is something you dream about as a kid," she said. "You pretend a putt is for the Big Ten championship. But it's not something I actually thought would happen."

Star trek confirms an original series genius is so smart, even the gods respect him.

In Star Trek #19, fans learn a beloved crew member of the Original Series is so respected, that even the gods come to him for advice.

  • In Star Trek #19, by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly and Megan Levens, fans learn even the gods respect Scotty's intelligence and experiecne.
  • The Organian/Vulcan T'Lir comes to Scotty, seeking advice on how to handle a crewmate.
  • Scotty is taken back to be giving advice to a god, but T'Lir takes what Scotty says to heart.

Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek #19!

Throughout Star Trek history, Scotty distinguished himself as one of Starfleet’s best engineers, and his reputation is so sterling that even the gods come to him for advice. A Star Trek icon, Scotty has joined Captain Sisko and the Theseus on a mission to save reality itself. As the crew prepares for the mission ahead, one god-like being comes to Scotty seeking advice in Star Trek #19 .

Star Trek #19 is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Megan Levens. After T’Lir has a falling out with Ensign Sato, they go to Scotty, seeking advice on how to handle mortal friendships. Scotty was a little taken back that a god-like Organian would come to him for advice. T’Lir persists in their request, and Scotty gives them solid advice, citing his own familial experiences as well as his time with Kirk and Spock.

Scotty advises T’Lir to cherish everyone close to them, god-like or not.

Scotty Earned His Reputation as "the Miracle Worker."

Scotty lived to the 24th century thanks to his ingenuity.

Montgomery Scott, known as “Scotty,” set the template for all other engineers in the Star Trek franchise. After years of bouncing around on freighters and other ships, Scotty came to the Enterprise. While Strange New Worlds established that Scotty knew Captain Pike, it would be under Captain James Kirk’s tenure that his reputation as the “miracle worker” grew. Scotty would retire in the early 24th century, but fate had other plans for him. Crash-landing on a Dyson Sphere, Scotty kept himself alive for decades in a jury-rigged transporter.

Scotty has been played by three different actors: James Doohan in the Original Series, Simon Pegg in the Kelvin-timeline films and Martin Quinn on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Rather than mope and brood about his situation, Scotty returns to duty in Starfleet. In some non-canonical sources, he helped design the Sovereign class starships, of which the Enterprise NCC-1701-E was one. When Kahless embarked on his genocidal quest against the gods, Scotty joined up with Sisko to help. He offered Sisko use of the Theseus , an older starship that Scotty refitted to be the best ship in Starfleet. The Theseus is an impressive feat of engineering, one of the most advanced ships in the fleet, and is a testbed for new technologies, some of which Scotty designed.

"It's Been 70 Years Since My Feet Touched the Ground": Scotty Reveals the Bittersweet Final Fate of Star Trek's Original Heroes

Scotty's genius is respected even by the gods, now scotty is going to meet the god-like beings of the star trek universe.

Scotty has been front and center in IDW’s flagship Star Trek comic. His service to the Theseus and the Federation as a whole has been a great reminder to fans why Scotty is a Star Trek icon in the first place. T’Lir remembers meeting Scotty as a child on Organia, and they recognize his genius. A century’s worth of experience on board starships counts for something, and T’Lir knows this. This god-like being sees Scotty as the true Star Trek genius he is, both as an engineer and as a human being.

Star Trek #19 is on sale now from IDW Publishing!
