Riding The Glacier Express: Routes, Ticket Prices & More

swiss travel pass glacier express reservation

The Glacier Express is one of the most famous train journeys in Switzerland and all over the world. It is world-renowned for the views of some of the most stunning landscapes in the Swiss Alps.

The Glacier Express is the slowest express train in Europe and the world, taking around 8 hours to go just 180 miles (290 km). But, by being the world’s slowest express train, you get to take in stunning views along the way.

It runs between two of the most famous mountain resorts in Switzerland, Zermatt and St Moritz, plus it also has a link to Davos. The Glacier Express stops along the way, too, so you can board it at one of the stops.

Fitted with panoramic coaches with world-class service, a trip on the Glacier Express is mind-blowing. Join me as I run through everything you need to know about riding the Glacier Express, from all the stops to booking tickets.

Glacier Express Route

Glacier Express - Zermatt

Zermatt to Brig

The Glacier Express train begins its journey in Zermatt, the stunning mountain resort with views of the Matterhorn. Spending a night or two in this beautiful car-free village before boarding the Glacier Express is well worth it.

Once the Glacier Express departs Zermatt it begins its journey to the next stop, Brig. Along the way, you will see incredible mountain landscapes including huge cliffs that rise up to 4,000 meters above sea level.

It drops down into the Mattertal Valley and the Mattervispa River which provide stunning vistas from the train on both sides.

Brig to Andermatt

From Brig, the Glacier Express moves on to its next stop, Andermatt. Along the way, the train follows the beautiful Rhône Valley which provides some magical views of snow-capped peaks and rural alpine villages.

The train then heads to Oberwald, where it climbs to 1,366 meters above sea level and then rolls into the Furka Tunnel at 1,550 meters above sea level.

The Farka Tunnel is 15.4 km long as it cuts through the mountains. Before it was opened in 1982, the Glacier Express would have to go over the top of the pass and could only run in summer.

From Brig to Andermatt, the views are magical and just as good on either side of the Glacier Express train.

Andermatt to Chur

From Andermatt to Chur, you want to sit on the train’s left side. This section has some of the most stunning views from the world’s slowest express train.

After leaving Andermatt, the train climbs to its highest altitude as it goes over the Oberalp Pass, reaching 2,033 meters above sea level.

If you are traveling between November and April, you will have views of a snow-covered wonderland with stunning peaks.

The Glacier Express then drops down into the Rhine Valley and along the Rhine Gorge. You will see a massive canyon resembling a scar across the landscape with giant cliffs on either side. This section is also filled with forests and wildlife.

Before arriving in Chur (the oldest town in Switzerland), you will descend to 585 meters. This section of the Glacier Express has the biggest altitude change and is the most beautiful.

Glacier Express Class Options

Glacier Express - Excellence Class

The Glacier Express offers numerous classes you can book for your journey, including Excellent, 1st, and 2nd class.

Excellence Class

Excellence class isn’t available on all trains, only the

  • 902, 903, and 923.

It is the most expensive class, as you’d expect, but comes with many benefits.

In Excellence Class , you travel in a special deluxe car of the Glacier Express. There is one seat on each side of the car and you have a table with a seat facing you, making it perfect for couples and everyone has a window seat to see the views.

When traveling in Excellence Class, you get a seven-course meal served to your seat with wine and complimentary champagne. Your luggage is taken from you at the station and given to you on the platform when you leave the train – the service is outstanding.

The car has an exclusive cocktail bar and a host to ensure you have what you need when you want it. You also get afternoon tea, coffee, snacks, and soft drinks included in the price.

1st Class cars have two seats on one side of the train and one on the other. This creates a booth of 4 seats on one side with a table and two seats on the other with a table.

If you are traveling as a couple, make sure your seat reservation is on the side with two seats facing each other so you both have a window seat.

The seats are larger than 2nd class and you get free earphones to plug into the info media that describes the trip along the way.

2nd Class has 2 seats on each side of the train with a table in the middle, creating a booth of 4 on each side. The seats are very comfortable and almost the same as first class. You also get free earphones to listen to the information about the trip.

The only downside to second class is that you can not sit as a couple alone with your own table which is why 1st might be better.

Swiss Travel Pass: First Class Vs Second Class

The glacier express cost.

Glacier Express Wallis

To travel on the Glacier Express you have to first buy a ticket for your chosen class and then buy a Glacier Express seat reservation on top of that.

The cost of the Glacier Express tickets is CHF 152 for 2nd class and CHF 268 for 1st class, for the whole route one way.

If you book in advance, you can get much cheaper tickets as a Saver Day Pass is around CHF 52 for 2nd class and CHF 88 for 1st class.

Children between 6 and 16 can pay half plus the adult supplement and kids under 6 are free.

Swiss Pass and Swiss Rail Tickets are also valid on the Glacier Express, but you must still buy the extra seat reservation.

For the Excellence Class, you need

  • a 1st class ticket (CHF 268)
  • an Excellence seat (CHF 420)

Making the total cost CHF 688.

Other seat reservations start at CHF 29 and go up from there. The more affordable reservations are available in the low season between Dec and May.

You can also make your tickets more affordable by doing a shorter route on the Glacier Express train.

The Glacier Express Timetable

The Glacier Express train runs all year round except for between the end of October and the middle of December.

Between December and April, there is one train per day from Zermatt, leaving at 8.52 a.m. and arriving in St Moritz at 4:37 p.m. In April, a second train leaving Zermatt at 9:52 a.m. is added to the Glacier Express schedule .

During December and April, the Glacier Express also runs from St Moritz to Zermatt, leaving at 9:50 am and arriving in Zermatt at 6:10 pm.

In the summer from May to October, there are 2 trains per day in both directions. You can only travel in Excellence class on the first train leaving St Moritz or Zermatt.

Where to Buy the Glacier Express Tickets

Glacier Express Albula

You can buy your tickets for the Glacier Express online here . They are only available 92 days before the date of travel, so if you are looking for a cheaper ticket, be sure to book precisely 92 days in advance.

Reservations are compulsory on the Glacier Express and the train can be booked, so be sure to get your ticket and seat reservation early.

You can also book the Glacier Express at any Swiss railway station.

How to Make Seat Reservations in the Glacier Express

Making a seat reservation on the Glacier Express is very easy and is a part of the ticket booking process.

Make sure you book a window seat for the views and I would recommend traveling on the left side of the train from Zermatt and the right side of the train from St Moritz for the best views.

Also, book a coach in the middle to get more extensive views.

Essential Tips for Riding the Glacier Express

  • Bring all the food and drinks you like with you if you are on a budget
  • Travel in May to see the Swiss Alps in spring with snow-capped peaks
  • Travel in October to see the amazing autumn colors
  • The same route is available on normal trains if you can’t afford the Glacier Express
  • Spend some time at the towns where you get on and off the Glacier Express; they are beautiful
  • Travel on the left side of the train from Zermatt for the best views
  • Travel on the right side of the train from St Moritz for the best views
  • Excellence Class is worth it if you can afford it

Best Scenic Train Rides in Switzerland (Views to Die For)

Frequently asked questions about the glacier express, is the food free in the glacier express.

In general, the food is not free on the Glacier Express. However, if you are traveling in Excellence Class , a 7-course meal with wine pairings, complimentary champagne, coffee, tea, soft drinks, and snacks are included.

If you are in 1st or 2nd class, you have the choice to order food from the food service car for your journey that will be brought to your table.

You can order a 3-course meal for CHF 47, the dish of the day for CHF 34, or order from the a la carte menu too. The food comes on china plates with silver cutlery and is served on a tablecloth – a high-end service.

If paying for a meal on board is a little out of your budget, you can bring your own picnic along with wind, beer, and champagne with you.

Can you hop on & off the Glacier Express?

No, the Glacier Express is not a hop on and hop off service. You have to travel according to your seat booking with the Glacier Express. So if you have booked a seat from Zermatt to St Moritz, you must stay on that train. You can’t get off at Chur and then get on the next train.

You can, however, book a ticket to match where you would like to get on and off for example, Chur to Zermatt instead of doing the whole route.

When is the best time to ride the Glacier Express?

No matter when you travel on the Glacier Express, the views are beautiful. But the best time is either in May when you will see lush green valleys and wildflowers with snow-capped mountain peaks.

Or, in October, when the leaves all change colors and the higher altitude peaks start to have snow on them as well.

For a full winter and snow experience, I recommend traveling in January or February, as everything should be white by then.

Is the Glacier Express worth it?

Yes, in my eyes, the Glacier Express is 100% worth it and is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. There is no better way of seeing the incredible mountain scenery of the Alps than on the Glacier Express.

You can do it in mega luxury in Glacier Express Excellence Class or on a budget by booking in advance and bringing a picnic.

Does the Glacier Express only go one way?

No, you can break the journey up into parts or go in different directions. So, although the Glacier Express is actually a complete route from St Moritz to Zermatt, the exact journey you take is up to you.

Can you sleep on the Glacier Express train?

No, there is no possibility to book a sleeper cabin or bed on the Glacier Express. However, you can nap on the comfy first-class seats anywhere along the way!

Which route of Glacier Express is most beautiful?

It is hard to rate the most beautiful section of the Glacier Express, but here are some of the highlights – Chur to St. Moritz includes the stunning viaduct-style bridges and tunnels, Andermatt to Chur consists of the breathtaking Rhine Gorge, Zermatt to Brig includes the whole Mattertal valley with 4000m peaks.

How much does it cost?

You buy a normal ticket or Saver Day Pass or can use an Interrail pass, Eurail Pass or Swiss Travel Pass .  You then pay the Glacier Express reservation fee on top.

Children under 6 go free without their own seat.  Children aged 6 to 16 pay half fare but must pay the adult reservation fee.

How to buy tickets

First some explanation .  Listen up, I'm going to save you some money...

You need two things to travel on the Glacier Express:  (1) A seat reservation which secures your place on the train and (2) any sort of ticket for the class you've reserved.

The ticket can be a regular point-to-point train ticket or it can be a Saver Day Pass , Swiss Travel Pass or Interrail or Eurail pass.

I recommend buying the seat reservation first, then buying the ticket separately.

Why?  Because the Glacier Express website only sells expensive full-flex standard-fare tickets, even when a much cheaper Saver Day Pass is available and covers the whole Glacier Express route.  Wouldn't you rather pay CHF 52 for a Saver Day Pass than CHF 152 for a full-price ticket?  See the fares above .  So buy a Glacier Express reservation (only the reservation!) in whatever class you want using the Glacier Express website, then buy a Saver Day Pass for the relevant class at a website that sells those.  It's not rocket science!

Step 1, make a seat reservation .

Reservations open 93 days ahead.

Go to the official Glacier Express website, www.glacierexpress.ch and run an enquiry for your journey.

Select Classic Glacier Express for normal 1st & 2nd class, or select Excellence class .

If you're booking between 93 & 60 days ahead, it may warn you that it can only sell a reservation at this time, which is what you want anyway.

Select the train you want, then select seats from the seat map.  Do not worry about the price it shows at this stage.

You can't tell which seats face forward or which side of the train they'll be, because the system has no idea which way round the carriage will run.  I recommend that a couple book face-to-face window seats, a family books 4 seats around a table.

Now the science bit:  On the page where you enter your personal details, change the Reservation drop-down box to Reservation only .

You should see the price drop to the cost of a Glacier Express seat reservation, see the fares section above .

Go ahead and buy the reservation, you are then safely booked on the Glacier Express!

In principle, you could now simply buy a full-price standard ticket at the station 10 minutes before the train goes, full-price standard tickets have unlimited availability and cannot sell out.  But it's a lot cheaper to buy a ticket in advance, as per step 2...

Step 2, buy a ticket .

If you have a Swiss Travel Pass , Interrail or Eurail pass, you already have a ticket so no further action is necessary.  If you don't have such a pass, here's how to buy a ticket:

Tickets go on sale 60 days ahead.  You can't buy before sales open.

Go to Omio.com and run an enquiry for the journey you wish to make, for example St Moritz to Zermatt.

Find your train and select it.  Look for a train with 0 changes, just remember there is more than one Glacier Express a day in summer - although as Saver Day Passes are good for any train, it doesn't matter if you pick the wrong one.

If a Saver Day Pass is available it will be offered, usually as the cheapest option.  Select it in the class you want, which must (obviously!) be for whichever class of seat you've reserved.

Go ahead and buy it.  You can print it out or show it on your phone.

A Saver Day Pass gives unlimited travel all day all over Switzerland on most main train routes including the MGB & RhB who run the Glacier Express, and the mainline SBB & BLS routes.  The price varies depending how far ahead you buy it and how popular that day is.  Read about Saver Day Passes here .

Omio.com is really easy to use, it adds a small booking fee and I get a little commission if you book this way.  Alternatively, you can buy tickets (including Saver Day Passes) with no booking fee at www.sbb.ch but it's a little more fiddly and may default to a 50% Half Fare Card discount which you need to be sure to remove before buying.

If you've an Interrail, Eurail or Swiss Travel Pass

Interrail & Eurail passes cover the Rhätische Bahn (RhB) and the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) so cover the whole Glacier Express route.  Until 2017, Eurail & Interrail gave free travel on the RhB part of the trip, but only a discount on MGB.  They now give free travel on both.

So all you need is a Glacier Express seat reservation, see the reservation prices above .  You can even travel in Excellence class if you have a 1st class pass and make an Excellence class reservation.

To make a reservation , follow step 1 in the How to buy tickets section above .  You do not need to follow step 2 if you have a pass.

Holidays & tours on the Glacier Express

Railbookers :  For a custom-made trip on the Glacier Express with trains, transfer & hotels arranged for you as a package, call Railbookers.  Tell them what you want, and they'll advise you on the best trains, routes & hotels.  They get great reviews and take good care of their guests.

Check out two of their top sellers:  8-day Switzerland's Lakes & Mountains tour (link to their UK site) or Swiss Lakes & Mountains tour (link to their US & Canada site) which includes both Glacier Express & Bernina Express trains, and their shorter 5-day Classic Bernina Express & Glacier Express tour (link to their UK site) or Classic Bernina Express & Glacier Express tour (link to their US & Canada site) which also combine these two classic Alpine routes.

UK flag

Tailor Made Rail can also organise a trip to Switzerland by train, with hotels and transfers arranged as a package. Call their dedicated seat61 phone line 020 3778 1461 and quote seat 61 when booking.  From outside the UK call +44 20 3778 1461.  Lines open 09:00-17:30 Monday-Friday.  Their website is www.tailormaderail.com/trains/glacier-express-holidays .

Escorted tours:   If you'd prefer to go to Switzerland to travel on the famous Glacier Express on an escorted tour with a convivial group of travellers rather than travelling solo, here are the two UK companies which arrange escorted tours by train from the UK to destinations all over Europe on various dates through the year, including popular trips taking in the Glacier Express and equally famous Bernina Express .  Both companies are part of the same group.

What's it like on the Glacier Express?

The Glacier Express uses modern panoramic coaches specially built in 2006.  It's a pleasure to travel on, clean, comfortable, carpeted and air-conditioned, its most distinctive features are the huge panoramic side windows and glass skylights as well, so you don't miss any of the scenery.

In 1st class cars seats are 2+1 across the car width, with bays of 4 seats around a table on one side of the aisle and bays of 2 seats across a table on the other.  In 2nd class, seats are arranged 2+2 across the car width, with bays of 4 around a table on each side of the aisle.  Apart from more space and fewer passengers per coach, seats are similar and there is little to choose between 1st & 2nd.  Both are excellent and on-board service is exactly the same.  However, for couples a face-to-face table for two is a good reason for going 1st class.  See Glacier Express seat map .

Both classes have power sockets and free WiFi.  You'll get a free printed route guide with an explanation of the key sights and route map.  There are free headphones which you can plug in to listen to the commentary.  Video screens at the end of the car show the train's location and other information.

There is a bar car, but no need to visit it.  Staff come down the train taking orders for tea, coffee, alcoholic and soft drinks & snacks, also for a 2, 3 or 4 course lunch.  You can pre-book lunch, served at your seat on real china with proper cutlery, with a choice of starters, main courses and desserts, accompanied by a good selection of wines.  You can find sample menus & wine list at www.glacierexpress.ch under Travel planning then Gastronomy . Or feel free to bring your own picnic and bottle of wine.

Lunch served at your seat in 1st or 2nd class.  A 2, 3 or 4-course lunch can be ordered and paid for in advance when you reserve, or you can order and pay for it on the day.

Excellence class

Since 2019 there's a premium option called Excellence class,  only available on trains 902 & 903/923.  It's become incredibly popular and gets booked up fast.

Excellence class consists of one deluxe panoramic car with seats arranged 1+1 across the car width, face-to-face tables for two on both sides of the aisle, so everyone gets a window seat.  There's a cocktail bar at one end of the car for Excellence class passengers.  A 5-course regional menu with wine is included in the reservation fee, as is complimentary coffee, juice, snacks & champagne.  A dedicated Excellence class host travels with the car.  See the 360º photo of Excellence class here ( please let me know if this link stops working).

To travel in Excellence class you need a first class ticket (or 1st class Interrail , Eurail , Saver Day Pass or Swiss Travel Pass ) then you pay the Excellence class reservation fee.  You can make the reservation at www.glacierexpress.ch and print it out, but I recommend buying a Saver Day Pass separately rather than paying for a full-price ticket, see the prices and advice on tickets above .

Traveller James Morris reports:   "Excellence Class is brilliant.  A professional concierge service helps you with your bags and shows you to your seat.  They are friendly and chatty, nothing is too much trouble.  They are clued up on the food and drink they serve and explain it all to you. They wear white gloves when serving, and know how to open and pour champagne.  I had iced tea all trip with spring water and herbs, best iced tea ever.  I was never without a drink in front of me all trip.  They refill glasses or get you a new bottle of water without a second thought.  For those that do drink.  It was champagne to start, followed by a different wine for each course of the meal. They served a full 7 course meal, amazing food.  The seats are very comfortable with good recline, and full lumbar adjustment.  A shelf by the side of your seat has easy to reach sockets & USB charger.  An IPad was provided to help you follow the journey.  A Glacier Express tilting glass was given as a souvenir at the end of the trip, along with Excellence class branded chewing gum or hand cream.  On arrival, you are told to just leave the train, someone comes on board to carry your bags off. It exceeded my expectations, which isn't bad considering the price.  Definitely a must do if you can afford it."

Travel tips & FAQ

What time of year is best?

You can go almost any time, as the Glacier Express runs all year round apart from a short break from Late October to mid-December when the MGB does annual track maintenance on the Brig-Zermatt line, see the timetable above .  Indeed, you really need to do it twice, once as a summer jaunt through sunny green Swiss meadows and again through a snowy wonderland in the depths of winter.  They are two different experiences!  You can still go in the October-December period when there's no Glacier Express, using local trains on the same route, with a change of train or two somewhere, use www.sbb.ch to find times.

Is eastbound or westbound better?

It makes little difference, either is fine, scenery is the same in either direction and all the trains do the whole run in daylight even in winter.  Arguably, Zermatt is the nicer destination to end up in for a short stay.

Should you go first or second class?

The scenery is exactly the same whether you choose 1st or 2nd class and the on board service is the same, too.  The only difference is the seating arrangement, see the photos above .  As you can see, 2nd class seats are arranged 2+2 across the car width, 1st class seats 2+1, so 1st class seats offer more elbow room and fewer passengers per car.  It also means that there are tables-for-two on one side of the aisle, which are nicer for couples than sharing a 4-seater section in 2nd class.  But there's no difference in on-board service, all you're paying for is the lower-density seating.  2nd class is absolutely fine.

Which side of the train to sit?

Eastbound from Zermatt, the right-hand side is best along the Mattertal Valley from Zermatt to Brig, but in the Rhine Gorge, all the river scenery is on the left.  The train changes direction in Chur.  Then from Chur to St Moritz the best views are on the right hand side, including the classic view as the train curves onto the Landwasser Viaduct .  Westbound from St Moritz, it's obviously the opposite side in each case.  However, when booking you can't tell which way round the carriages will be, so unfortunately you can't reserve a seat on a specific side.

Opening windows for photography or video

The panoramic windows are great for viewing, but the double glazing isn't great for reflection-free photography.  There are two solutions:  In each passenger car, the droplights in the entrance doors open:  Pinch together the two small knobs at the top of the window to lower it.  In the bar car, one large window on each side pulls right down, quite a few passengers gather in there to photograph key sights such as the Landwasser Viaduct!  Obviously, don't lean out, just point your camera through the open window, staff won't usually mind if you're careful.

Luggage on the Glacier Express

Like any other European train, you take your luggage onto the train with you and put it on the luggage racks.  Within reason you can take whatever you like, suitcases, backpacks, whatever, as long as you can carry it yourself.  There are large luggage racks in each car, just inside the seating area, see the photos below.  You can also put bags between the seat backs.

Food on the Glacier Express

There's a bar car in the centre of the train selling tea, coffee, snacks and souvenirs.  But you don't need to visit it.  In 1st & 2nd class, staff come down the train at regular intervals taking orders for food and drink, and a 2, 3 or 4-course lunch can be served at your seat at extra cost.  You settle up at the end of the journey.  Or you're free to bring your own picnic and even wine on board, as on other European trains.

Juvalt Castle , dating from 1216.  The castle guards a pinch point in the valley, through which the trade routes pass.

Chur, 585m above sea level.  The train passes Reichenau and reaches Chur, Chur is a dead-end terminus and the train changes direction here.

Rhine Gorge .  The train leaves Chur, passes back through Reichenau and soon afterwards starts snaking along the River Rhine.

The train follows the river for quite a way.

Passing an eastbound Glacier Express.  Note the rack between the rails, this section is too steep for unaided adhesion.

Oberalp Pass , the highest point on the journey at 2,033m above sea level.  The lighthouse is a 2010 replica of one that once stood at Hoek van Holland and is now in the Maritime Museum in Rotterdam.  The source of the Rhine is a stone's throw away from here.

Descending from the Oberalp Pass.

Approaching Andermatt

Andermatt and its station are visible way below.

Furka Tunnel :  After Andermatt the Glacier Express passes through the 15.4 km Furka Tunnel, opened in 1982.  You may see cars & lorries on transporter wagons being shuttled through the tunnel, especially in winter when the pass over the top is closed.  Year-round service on the railway was only possible when the tunnel opened.  Incidentally, the train is named after the Rhône Glacier on the Furka Pass which is no longer visible from the train since the tunnel opened, although you may see other glaciers high in the mountains at points along the train's route.

Between Andermatt & Brig.

Brig , 691m above sea level.  The metre-gauge MGB platforms are in the road in front of the mainline SBB (Swiss Railways) station.

The train runs alongside the mainline SBB tracks from Brig to Visp, then heads off on the line to Zermatt ascending the Mattertal Valley.

Rack and pinion is used on the steeper sections as the train climbs relentlessly towards Zermatt, along the Matter Vispa river.

Getting higher...

Looking back at Tasch rail terminal.  Zermatt is car-free, road vehicles park at Tasch, from where shuttle trains run to Zermatt.

Zermatt , 1,804m above sea level.  The town is car-free, those electric vehicles are taxis.

End of the line:  Zermatt nestles at the foot of the imposing 4,477m Matterhorn.

Take a winter trip.

The Glacier Express runs all year round apart from a few weeks break from mid-October to early December.  The journey through winter snow is a completely different experience from the same journey past summer meadows.  So you really need to do it twice!  The train is less busy in winter, so it's easier to get seats, too.  Photo below courtesy of David Saville.

A brief history of the Glacier Express

After the first world war, Switzerland steadily gained popularity as a winter and summer holiday destination for those who could afford it.  Railways grew up to support this tourism, and through services on he metre-gauge line between Brig, Chur and St Moritz started in 1926.  But it was in June 1930 that the first Zermatt to St Moritz 'Glacier Express' started running, initially summer only, and run jointly by the BVZ (Brig-Visp-Zermattbahn), FOB (Furka Oberalp Bahn) and RhB (Rhätische Bahn).  It could not run all year because of the impossibility of keeping the line over the Oberalp pass open in winter.  Construction of the Furka base tunnel started in 1973, and at long last in 1982 all-year operation was inaugurated between Zermatt and St Moritz.  BVZ and FOB merged in 2003 to form the MGB (Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn).  The Glacier Express has been progressively developed as a premier tourist attraction in its own right, and rightly so, though it continues to form an integral part of the Swiss transport network.  More info at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glacier_Express .

The Glacier Express has its own website, www.glacierexpress.ch , where you can check up to date times & fares, and the current menu.

Hotels in Zermatt

The Monte Rosa Hotel is the most famous & historic place to stay if your budget allows.  This was the first hotel in Zermatt and it was from here that Edward Whymper set out on the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865.  It's right in the centre of the town only 400m from the station, with a superb 9/10 review score.

Otherwise (assuming your budget won't stretch to the other top-notch place directly opposite the Monte Rosa, the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof , opened in 1879), a much more affordable and down-to-earth choice close to the station in Zermatt's main street is the clean & comfortable Hotel Garni Testa Grigia .  Or just search booking.com , anything with a review score over 8.0 will be great.

The famous Monte Rosa Hotel and plaque dedicated to Edward Whymper, see larger photo .

Hotels in St Moritz

The Hotel Waldhaus am See is an easy 4 minutes walk from St Moritz railway station, see walking map .  It has friendly staff, a cosy, family-run atmosphere and the restaurant/breakfast room has a lovely view over the lake.  It's also about as affordable as hotels in St Moritz get.  Perfect!

Alternatively, the Romantik Hotel Muottas Muragl is a truly amazing hotel opened in 1907, perched on a 2,454m high mountain with spectacular views over the Engadin Valley, a short ride by train+funicular from St Moritz/Samedan/Pontresina.  I have never seen a more spectacular view out of any hotel window over breakfast.

To reach the Romantik Hotel Muottas Muragl , take a local train from St Moritz to Punt Muragl Staz , see Muottas Muragl train route map , or you can get off the Glacier Express at Samedan (the stop before St Moritz) and take a local train to Punt Muragl .  It's then a 250m walk from either of these unstaffed halts to the bottom of the funicular railway which climbs up the mountain to the Hotel Muottas Muragl.  To check train times, simply use the journey planner at www.sbb.ch and run an enquiry from anywhere in Switzerland to Muottas Muragl , that's the name of the upper station of the funicular right next to the hotel.

12 Things You Need To Know Before Riding The Glacier Express

Robert Marmion

The Glacier Express is the most iconic train ride in Switzerland. It travels from Zermatt to St. Moritz over 8 hours and gives incredible views of snow capped mountains and lush valleys. It is one of the most scenic train rides in the world and a bucket list experience.

Best Seats On The Glacier Express

The best seats on the Glacier Express are the single seats that face each other in first class. While the group of 4 seats in first class provide a little more room than second class, they don’t give the same freedom of movement and views to each person. If you were going to sit it a group of 4 in first class, there wouldn’t be much difference between first and second class.

Both 1st and 2nd class on the Glacier Express have the same beautiful windows to look through, so you won’t find a bad view on the whole train.

Glacier Express 1st class seats

The second class seats are in groups of 4 on both sides, with a little less room per seat.

Glacier Express 2nd class seats

Does The Glacier Express Make Stops

The Glacier Express does make stops along its route to pick up and drop off passengers. You do not have to book a ticket to ride the entire route at once, and could do it over several days, or only do a certain section.

Our Glacier Express route guide will show you which parts of the route are the most scenic. Some passengers like to start or end before Zermatt and St. Moritz as they are expensive remote ski villages that aren’t perfect for an overnight. On our trip we did the whole route, but ended up doubling back to Chur on a regional train after arriving in St. Moritz for more affordable accommodations.

The Glacier Express stops in Zermatt, Brig, Andermatt, Chur, St. Moritz, Filisur, Samedan, and Tiefencastel.

Does the Glacier Express Have WiFi

Yes, the Glacier Express has WiFi. The WiFi is free and provides enough quality to handle most tasks while on the train. We didn’t notice any slow speeds or dropouts while we were on board.

Is the Glacier Express Good In Winter

The Glacier Express runs year round including the winter months and is especially pretty in December, January and February after the snow has fallen. In addition to the beauty, you’ll save CHF 10 on the price of a seat reservation in winter. There is a more limited schedule though, so you’ll still want to make your winter seat reservations early.

Glacier Express in Winter

Which side of the Glacier Express is Better for Views

The right side of the Glacier Express is the best side for views along most of the route in the direction of Zermatt to St. Moritz. Note that the train will change directions in Chur so your side will switch. The Zermatt to St. Moritz direction is also best for views of the Landwasser Viaduct as you’ll be going in the direction you are entering the viaduct instead of leaving it. If your only purpose was to see the Landwasser Viaduct you should be on the right side when leaving south from Chur for the best view.

It is best to plan to catch the viaduct on another train if you are on the wrong side here as the Bernina Express and many regional trains also go through it. By the time we had left Switzerland we had been through it many times.

Landwasser Viaduct from the Glacier Express

How Long Does The Glacier Express Take

The Glacier Express takes just under 8 hours to follow its entire route from Zermatt to St. Moritz. Winding through 91 tunnels and 291 bridges while doing so. The train does not ever travel fast, instead taking its name from the fact that you’ll have the same seat the entire journey and it doesn’t make as many stops as a normal train would along that distance.

What is the Best Time of Year To Ride the Glacier Express

The best time of year to ride the Glacier Express is February. The landscape will be stunning over almost all of the route, with snow covering the foreground and the mountains. In addition to amazing scenery, you’ll have less people to deal with and the prices will be cheaper. February also makes you more flexible on your dates, as you can lock them in later as seat reservations don’t fill up so quickly.

Glacier Express in Winter

What is the Most Scenic Part of the Glacier Express

The most scenic part of the Glacier Express is from Andermatt to Disentis through the Oberlap pass. If you are lucky enough to go in winter you’ll see more snow than you can imagine. As you approach Chur you’ll be treated to a wonderful view of the Rhine Gorge. If you can only ride one section of the Glacier Express it should be the Andermatt to Chur section.

Andermatt from the Glacier Express

Can You Bring Your Own Food On the Glacier Express

Yes, you can bring your own food on the Glacier Express. We recommend bringing some food even if you are going to purchase a meal. The ride is almost 8 hours long, and the food service can come at unpredictable times. We saw one table get their food and the next table over didn’t get food until an hour later.

We brought our own food and purchased one meal to share, which seemed like a wise choice after the ride. The dish we purchased was CHF 28 and was very good. Our meal was served just before noon, and we were ready to eat again before we got to St. Moritz so we were glad we had snacks.

Can You Take Luggage On The Glacier Express

You can take your luggage with you on the Glacier Express. The train has luggage racks in each car and a section under your seat to store bags and backpacks. You won’t have any problem storing you luggage on the train.

Is There Commentary on the Train

When you board the train you’ll be given a set of headphones that can plug into the seat. When you hear a bell on the train it is a cue to put your headphones in to listen to a few brief minutes of explanation of what you are seeing. It happens periodically throughout the trip. Commentary was available in several different languages.

We wished we had brought our own more comfortable wired headphones, but the ones they provided were fine. We had wireless ones with us, but they could not connect to the system.

This was a nice touch that we did not expect!

swiss travel pass glacier express reservation

Can the Swiss Travel Pass Be Used on the Glacier Express

The Swiss Travel Pass can be used as your ticket on the Glacier Express and is good for whichever class of the pass you have booked. If you’ve booked a 1st class Swiss Travel Pass you’ll be able to ride in 1st Class on the Glacier Express.

In addition to your Swiss Travel pass you’ll need to make a seat reservation, which costs CHF 39 in winter and CHF 49 in summer.

The addition of the Glacier Express to the Swiss Travel Pass makes it an incredible value.

The Glacier express is operated by Rhatische Bahn (RhB) and the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB). During summers, there are 4 trains running in each direction however, in winters, the service dries up as there in only two Glacier Express trains running per day in each direction.

It is a nine-hour long journey covering a distance of 290 km since it gallops at a speed of about 24 mph. However, Glacier Express isn't for those who want to reach their destination fast but want to savour and take in the beauty of the Alps and Glaciers along the way.

The train is made of panoramic sightseeing windows so that passengers can witness the beauty from the train. A delicious meal can be enjoyed as well by the travellers.

The scenic Glacier Express route will take you through three cantons of beautiful Valais Uri and Graubunden offering varied and stunning panoramic views. Eight hours of pure pleasure for your eyes. Here are some places that you can visit.

  • Zermatt - a beautiful quaint little car-free village situated at the foot of the mighty Matterhorn offering views that will take your breath away.
  • St. Moritz - a dazzling snow resort in Switzerland
  • The Albula Line, which comes with Landwasser and Solis viaducts along with Spiral Tunnels.
  • The Grand Canyon of Switzerland called the Rhine Gorge.

Glacier Express | Fares, Timetables and Info [2024]

The Glacier Express Train (or Gletscherexpress in German) is considered one of the most scenic Swiss Railway journeys in the country.

Often referred to as the world’s slowest express train, this Swiss Alps train runs between St. Moritz and Zermatt and passes some of Switzerland’s most stunning landscapes including mountains, streams, impressive rock formations and, if you travel during the colder months, plenty of snow.

A Glacier Express tour is often a highlight of many travellers’ trips to Switzerland.

A brief history of the Glacier Express

The Glacier Express first began operating on 25 June, 1930. The route connected Zermatt and St Moritz, and four of the finest vehicles owned by the three local Swiss railways involved were used. A brand new dining car was also added.

The initial trips between Zermatt and St Moritz took just under 11 hours each way. Electricity was supplied to most of the route, apart from the section between Brig and Disnentis.

Steam power was used here for over a decade, until electricity was introduced during the summer of 1941.

During the first two months, the new service proved to be incredibly popular, and about 20,000 passengers had used the Glacier Express by September 1930.

Though the service was suspended during the Second World War, it was given its red livery in 1968. From 1982 it operated all year round.

The early 1980s saw the Glacier Express being heavily marketed to American and German audiences.

By 1985, two more trains were needed to cover the summer season, and by the mid 1990s, over 250,000 passengers per year were travelling on what was nicknamed ‘the slowest express train in the world’.

Around this time, new cars were also purchased to upgrade the service. Some 25 years later, for the 90 year anniversary in 2020, every panoramic car was also fully overhauled and updated once again.

Today the Glacier Express is one of the best-loved panoramic train journeys in the world. Now, passengers can also book the superior Excellence Class with sweeping views from every window seat.

Selected windows can also be opened on the train once more to allow for better views and photography.

The Glacier Express Route

The Glacier Express runs between the two major Swiss mountain resorts of St. Moritz and Zermatt and takes you through the three cantons of Valais, Uri and Graubünden.

Throughout the almost 8-hour journey, passengers are rewarded with some of the most beautiful landscapes in all of Switzerland, including crossing a staggering 291 bridges and passing through an impressive 91 tunnels.

While the journey can be taken across an entire day, it’s best to think of the trip in sections.

This way you can choose whether you do all sections in the one day, or over a few days, allowing time for exploring the various Glacier Express stops along the route.

Map of Glacier Express route

Following is a brief overview of each section:

Zermatt to Brig

The Glacier Express Switzerland train journey starts in the alpine village of Zermatt , which is at the end of the Alpine Valley, just below the world-famous Matterhorn.

Zermatt is a gorgeous car-free mountain village which sits at an altitude of 1,605 metres above sea level and offers fantastic views of the Matterhorn.

From Zermatt, the Glacier Express train route heads to the town of Visp.  Along this part of the journey, expect to pass between narrow sections with massive rock walls rising to heights of around 4,000 metres.

The train then descends 651 metres towards the town of Brig, where it makes its first stop.

For this section of the journey, either the left or right side of the train has brilliant views.

Glacier Express in front of Matterhorn.

Brig to Andermatt

From the town of Brig, the train crosses the river Rhone and winds its way up through the Upper Rhone Valley.  Soon the train reaches Oberwald at an altitude of 1,366 metres.

The train then travels through the Furka Tunnel.  This tunnel is 15.4 kilometres long and, at its highest point, sits at an elevation of 1,550 metres.

After the tunnel, the train follows a relatively flat stretch of track into Andermatt, which is the second stop.

Glacier Express on Oberalp Pass

Andermatt to Chur

From Andermatt, the train climbs upwards through the Oberalp Pass.  The track reaches an altitude of 2,033 metres – the highest point of the entire journey.  During November through to April, expect the area to be covered with snow.

The train then makes a long descent along the Rhine Valley.  On this section, you will pass the Rhine Gorge where the river is carved into the rocks. The gorge is a stunning canyon, often referred to as the Grand Canyon of Switzerland.

The area is surrounded by cliffs several hundred metres high and the region is covered with forest and is full of wildlife.

You will then arrive in Chur, which at 585 metres, is the lowest altitude of the train journey.  Chur is the oldest town in Switzerland and the largest town on the Glacier Express route.

On this section, the train makes a stop at Disentis and Chur.

For the best views, it is recommended to sit on the left side of the train for this section.

Glacier Express in winter

Chur to St Moritz

This section of the Glacier Express route is also covered by the Bernina Express route.  On this section, the train heads in the direction of Reichenau, followed by Thusis and Tiefencastel in the Domleschg Valley.  This area is known for its castles and ruins.

The train continues passing through the narrow valley before arriving at the spectacular Landwasser viaduct.

The Landwasser Viaduct is a stunning 136 metre long and 65 metre high, single track, six-arched (each arch spans around 20 metres) limestone viaduct which crosses the Landwasser between Schmitten and Filisur.

After Filisur, the train takes several spiral turns as it ascends 1,789 metres to the Albula Tunnel.  The tunnel takes you even higher up the Upper Engadine Valley before reaching the final destination of St. Moritz .

St Moritz is one of the swankiest alpine towns in all of Switzerland.  This is where the rich and famous come to holiday.

As well as being well known as a top class ski resort, it’s also an excellent base for hiking, thermal baths , fine dining and luxury shopping.

On this section, the train makes a stop at Tiefencastel, Filisur, Samedan and St Moritz.

There is also an option for passengers to disembark at Filisur and take a connecting train to Davos in the east.

For the best views, it is recommended to sit on the right side of the train for this section.

Classes available on the Glacier Express Switzerland

An interior view of a 1st class coach on the Glacier Express

There are three different class options available on the Glacier Express Swiss Alps train, including 2 nd class, 1 st class and Excellence Class (this class is only available on selected services).

Regardless of which class you book, you can expect the following facilities onboard:

  • Panoramic windows all the way to the roof of the carriage.
  • Information about the routes – in 1 st and 2 nd class this is provided by way of headphones.
  • Air conditioning.
  • Food and drink available to be served at your seat.
  • Access to an onboard restaurant and bar.

The main differences between 1 st class and 2 nd class is space.  Second class carriages have a seat configuration of 2 and 2, whereas the 1 st class carriages have 2 seats on one side and 1 seat on the other. You may also find it quieter in 1st class due to there being less passengers.

If you really want to splash out though, another option is the brand-new Excellence Class – this takes 1 st class to a whole new level.

This is what you can expect in the Glacier Express Excellence Class carriage:

  • Only one seat per window – so everyone gets a window seat.
  • Spacious and luxurious lounge seats.
  • Five course lunch with accompanying wines.
  • Snacks throughout the day as well as afternoon tea.
  • Tablet with Bordinfotainment.
  • Lockable luggage compartment.
  • Personal concierge to answer your questions and provide information en route.
  • Limited of 20 passengers per carriage.
  • Private bar area.

Taking luggage onboard the Glacier Express

As most passengers who travel on the Glacier Express will be travelling with luggage, there is space to store suitcases on board.

Luggage racks can be found at the end of each carriage and these are suitable for medium and large suitcases.

There are no overhead luggage racks on the Glacier Express as these would interrupt the panoramic views.  Instead, hand luggage can be stored at your feet or between the backs of the seats.

Passengers are responsible for loading and unloading their own luggage.

If you wish to have your luggage transported for you, the Swiss Federal Railways operate a luggage transport service.  You can find all the details here .

Glacier Express Price

The Glacier Express ticket price varies depending on what sections of the journey you take, however for the entire trip from Zermatt to St Moritz the Glacier Express cost is CHF 159 for 2 nd class and CHF 272 for 1 st class and Excellence Class.

Yes, you read that correctly the 1 st class and Glacier Express Excellence class prices are the same – however, the price difference comes in the seat reservation – see below for details.

Things worth knowing about travelling on The Glacier Express

Travelling on The Glacier Express

Our guide to making the incredible ride focuses on the less obvious aspects of making this journey, including how rail pass users can now take this train!

Simon Harper

All of the core information you will need about The Glacier Express train is on its website but a summary of the less obvious aspects of taking this train will hopefully be useful.

The two largest independent mountain railway networks in southern Switzerland are the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn ( MGB ) and the Rhätische Bahn/ Rhaetian Railway ( RhB ), and what makes the Glacier Express train unique is that it is the only service that travels between BOTH networks. Therefore the Glacier Express is the only DIRECT train in either direction between Zermatt/Visp/Brig and Chur/Davos/St Moritz.

The longest journey possible on the Glacier Express is that between St Moritz and Zermatt, which takes around 8hrs and 10 mins; it’s not a fast train (speed isn’t the point of making a journey). In contrast, making the journey between St Moritz and Zermatt by a combination of regular MGB and RhB trains requires at least 4 (usually 5) changes of train.

  • St Moritz to Reichanau-Taimins
  • Reichanau-Taimins to Disentis-Muster
  • Disentis-Muster to Andermatt
  • Andermatt to Zermnatt or Brig
  • (Brig to Zermatt)

The cost of purchasing separate tickets for a journey by regular trains between Zermatt and St Moritz is similar to the cost of a Glacier Express ticket; so those Glacier Express ticket prices are actually good value. For journeys by The Glacier express the total price is the journey price + the reservation fee, so the 'journey price' is not the total cost. The journey price varies according to distance travelled, but the reservation fee is a fixed price, irrespective of distance.

You also don’t have to travel the length of the whole route to experience a ride on The Glacier Express – short section tickets are now available.

Booking a minimum of a couple of weeks ahead is highly recommended, as many departures sell out completely in advance. When making a booking, you will select seats on a seating plan, so can see if window tickets are available etc.

The booking process

The booking process is unconventional, because seat reservations can be booked from 93 days ahead of the travel date, but tickets aren't released for sale until two months ahead. However, don't wait until the tickets are released, as it's a very good idea to book reservations as early as possible At peak travel times, such as June - August and December - February, it's not unknown for Classic 1st and 2nd Class seats to be fully booked on certain departures more than two months ahead; and window seats inevitably sell particularly quickly. You will need to travel with a reservation + a ticket, or a reservation + a valid rail pass; which include Eurail, InterRail and Swiss Travel Passes .

Booking reservations up to two months ahead:

If you book reservations up to two months ahead, the tickets will also have been released for sale, so they will automatically be included with the booking. So users of Swiss Travel Passes, and Eurail / InterRail passes, will in effect need to remove the ticket element.

Booking Glacier Express tickets

Booking reservations more than two months ahead:

Booking reservations more than two months ahead for the Glacier Express

Note that the reservation fees for both rail pass users and ticket holders, are a flat rate regardless of distance.

Booking tickets for the Glacier Express after you have booked the reservation

(1) The reservation fees/supplementary charge is cheaper in the winter compared to the summer.

(2) Connections to Swiss mainline SBB trains are available at Brig, Visp and Chur - SBB trains from Basel and from Zurich operate to Chur.

Brig and Visp stations are served by trains from many Swiss cities including Basel , Bern, Geneva , Lausanne and Zurich . EC trains also provide a direct service between both Brig and Visp and Milan .

(3) Optional quality meals are served from the restaurant car on the trains to passenger’s seats in both 1st and 2nd class, but meals are only served to passengers who have requested meals prior to boarding. Meals can be added to a booking on the website - so the ticket prices therefore do NOT include the price of meals. A snack bar is available to passengers who do not want a hot meal or have not reserved a meal prior to boarding.

(4) The train will reverse direction on departure from Chur station.

Between St Moritz and Chur on the Glacier Express

Brig to Visp Between these stations the route runs parallel to a mainline operated by SBB and there is a more urban, less spectacular flavour here, though the views from the right of the train, of the valley walls towering above, have their moments.

Panoramic trains

Scenic train Switzerland - 7 Top Deals and Prices 2024

There are several world-famous panoramic trains in Switzerland, such as the Glacier Express, the Bernina Express and the Golden Pass Line. A panoramic train runs on routes that are particularly worth seeing. Whether beautiful landscapes, remarkable natural attractions or extraordinary buildings, the view is always very special. That's why a panoramic train has particularly large windows that allow a good view and great photos. In addition to the panoramic windows, a panoramic train often also offers elevated seats from which you can get an even better view of the surroundings.

Glacier Express

The Glacier Express is called the "slowest express train in the world" and lives up to this title. It covers a distance of 291 km between Zermatt and St. Moritz, passes 91 tunnels and crosses 291 bridges. It takes no less than eight hours to do so. This results in an average speed of 36 km/h, which is roughly equivalent to the speed that a leatherback turtle can cover under water.

The Glacier Express is operated by the two railroad companies Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn (MGB) and Rhätische Bahn (RhB). The MGB operates the section between Zermatt and Disentis, while the part between Disentis and St. Moritz is operated by the RhB.

So if you're making your way from St. Moritz to Zermatt on the Glacier Express, you'll have more than enough time at turtle speed to get your fill of the enchanting scenery. Check out this Glacier Express review for more information on this scenic ride.

Route Glacier Express

  • Where does the Glacier Express route pass?

The Glacier Express commutes between St. Moritz in the Engadine and Zermatt, the mountain village at the foot of the Matterhorn. Shortly after its departure in St. Moritz, the Glacier Express travels along the winding Albula line.

On this railroad line, the train passes through six viaducts and three helical tunnels to overcome the altitude between the Albula Pass and Filisur. It was included in the UNESCO World Heritage inventory in 2008. On this route, the train keeps changing the side of the valley and the direction. This does not make it easy to keep track of where you are. So keep a close look out the window.

This segment of the Glacier Express also includes the impressive Landwasser Viaduct, which leads directly from the bridge structure into a tunnel. The viaduct is 146 m long and 65 m high.

Next, the Glacier Express travels through the Rhine Gorge , also known as "Ruinaulta" or the "Swiss Grand Canyon" . If you start the journey in St. Moritz, here you have the best view of the Rhine Gorge on the left side of the train .

After a quick break in Chur, the capital of the canton of Grisons, the journey continues across the Oberalp Pass via Disentis/Mustér to Andermatt in the canton of Uri. Up here, the Glacier Express overcomes its highest point and passes Lake Oberalp, 2044 meters above sea level.

Afterwards, it's more or less all downhill and along the River Rhone to Brig in the canton of Valais . After Brig, the Glacier Express makes another change of direction and begins its final ascent to Zermatt. Here, the Matterhorn hopefully waits impatiently for you and does not hide behind the clouds.

  • Things to know about the Glacier Express
  • The Glacier Express runs three times daily in summer and twice daily in winter.
  • A seat reservation is mandatory for a ride on the Glacier Express. The cost depends on whether you're travelling in summer or winter and whether you're travelling the entire journey or only parts of it. The price for a seat reservation varies between CHF 29 and CHF 49. With the GA or Swiss Half Fare Card, you don't receive a discount on the reservation.
  • Several Rail Passes are accepted on the Glacier Express. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass , a Eurail, an Interrail or a day pass, you don't pay extra for the ticket and only need to buy a seat reservation. With the Swiss Half Fare Card you get a 50% discount on the ticket price.
  • Swiss Activities Tip : If you're interested in the journey, but not in a trip on the panoramic train, there are also "normal" trains running between Zermatt and St. Moritz. However, for this trip you have to change trains in Brig, Andermatt, Disentis/Mustér and Chur. The journey is only a little longer than with the Glacier Express. But you're not bound to the departures or the reservation obligation of the Glacier Express.
  • Service and gastronomy are very important on the Glacier Express. After all, the journey takes almost one full day, which won't go down well on an empty snomach. The easiest way is to order your meal when you get your seat reservation. However, the menu is also available for spontaneous requests.

Bernina Express

With its 55 tunnels and 196 bridges, which the Bernina Express panorama train crosses and traverses on the 156 km between Chur and Tirano, you could call it the little brother of the Glacier Express. In terms of speed, the two roughly balance each other out, as the Bernina Express also glides along the rails at leather turtle speed.

What's special about the Bernina Express is that it crosses the Swiss border and you have to change means of transportation in between. After about four hours, the panoramic train of the Rhaetian Railway reaches Tirano in Italy. From there, the Bernina Express bus covers the remaining 90 km to Lugano .

Due to the fact that the Bernina Express crosses the Alps, you will be able to marvel at glaciers on this trip in the beginning and be surrounded by palm trees only a few hours later. A more contrasting train ride in such a short time will be hard to find.

Learn more about the Bernina Express in our extensive review we wrote about this panoramic train.

Route Bernina Express

  • Where does the Bernina Express route pass?

The Bernina Express begins its journey in Chur and then shares its route with the Glacier Express until St. Moritz. Thus, this panoramic train also passes through the Rhine Gorge, over the Landwasser Viaduct and along the confusing Albula line into the Engadine.

From St. Moritz, the train climbs steeply up to Ospizio Bernina, which at 2253 meters above sea level is the highest point on the Bernina Express route. On the way there you have a wonderful view of the Morteratsch glacier as well as the ice-cold and deep blue Lago Bianco.

After this steep climb, it's all downhill. Literally.

Heading towards Italy, the Bernina Express travels over various viaducts, through the fertile Val Poschiavo, past Lago di Poschiavo and, shortly before crossing the border into Italy, across another highlight.

The circular viaduct in Brusio allows the train to overcome the required height on a small area and demonstrates for a moment the effect of centrifugal force.

In Campocologno the train crosses the border to Italy and ends in Tirano, a small town in Lombardy. From here, the Bernina Express bus takes you back to Switzerland in Lugano during summer. It takes three hours to drive through the Mediterranean Valtellina and past Lago di Como.

  • Things to know about the Bernina Express
  • The timetable of the Bernina Express is not easy to understand at first glance. The rail segments are divided into two different routes. One runs from Chur to Tirano, while the other starts in St. Moritz and also ends in Tirano. The train that starts in Chur does not stop in St. Moritz, but goes directly to Ospizio Bernina via Pontresina.
  • The panoramic train between Chur and Tirano runs daily, while the one between St. Moritz and Tirano runs only between May and October. The bus between Tirano and Lugano also runs between May and October.
  • If you travel outside the operating hours of the Bernina Express bus, your only option is to travel back to St. Moritz or Chur, or to travel individually to Lugano using public transport in Italy.
  • A seat reservation is mandatory for the Bernina Express. The cost depends on the time of year you are travelling and whether you use the bus to Lugano or end your trip in Tirano. The price therefore varies quite a bit between CHF 10 and CHF 42 depending on the route and season. With the GA and the Swiss HalfFare Card you don't get a discount on the reservation.
  • Several rail passes are accepted on the Bernina Express. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, a Eurail, an Interrail or a day pass, you only have to buy a seat reservation. With the Swiss Half Fare Card you get a 50% discount on the ticket price.
  • Swiss Activities Tip : If you're interested in the route, but not in a ride on the panoramic train, there are also "normal" trains running between Chur, St. Moritz and Tirano. Coming from Chur you'll have to change trains in Samedan and Pontresina, while between Tirano and St. Moritz you have a direct train. The advantage is that the trains run hourly, which gives you more flexibility than waiting for the panoramic train. In addition, the obligation for a seat reservation is omitted.
  • Unlike the Glacier Express, the Bernina Express doen't have a dining car. However, there is a bistro on board where cold snacks and regional delicacies can be purchased. The lunch break is spent in Poschiavo or in Tirano, where you find several catering options.
  • Don't forget: You'll need a passport or identity card to cross the border into Italy.

Golden Pass Line

The Golden Pass Line is a panoramic train route consisting of three individual stages. The first stage - operated by Zentralbahn - runs between Lucerne and Interlaken . After that, the BLS regional train takes over to Zweisimmen, from where the Golden Pass Panoramic finishes the third section to Montreux. All in all, this scenic route covers 191 km in roughly six hours.

The Golden Pass Line connects the German-speaking part of Switzerland with the French-speaking part and passes some important Swiss lakes along the way. These include Lake Lucerne , Lake Brienz , Lake Thun and Lake Geneva . You can also catch a glimpse of the Giessbach Falls along the way next to Lake Brienz.

Since the Golden Pass Line cuts right through the middle of Switzerland, it's especially easy to integrate it into your Switzerland itinerary .

Route Golden Pass Line

  • Where does the Golden Pass Line route pass?

Coming from the east, the Golden Pass Line starts in Lucerne. Before its ascent to the Brünig Pass at an altitude of just over 1000 meters, the train passes three smaller lakes: Lakes Alpnach, Sarner and Lungern. After crossing the Brünig Pass, it begins its descent towards Brienz and winds its way along Lake Brienz to Interlaken.

The views on this section are breathtaking. After Brienz, you can even catch a glimpse of the Giessbach Falls and the imposing Grand Hotel on the other side of the lake.

In Interlaken Ost, you'll need to transfer onto another train. This train changes the lakeside after Interlaken and travels along Lake Thun to Spiez. The subsequent journey through the Simmental invites you to slow down and dream. The train takes its dear time here and you can enjoy the narrow valley, the dark forests and the charming river.

After a flying change in Zweisimmen onto the Golden Pass Panoramic, the train continues uphill and through the Bernese Oberland to Gstaad. This ride offers another picture-perfect panorama. Green meadows, grazing cows, traditional wooden chalets and snowy peaks of the Alps in the background show you Switzerland as you imagined it.

On its final stretch to Montreux , the Golden Pass Line passes through the Vaud and Fribourg Alps and ultimately down through the vineyards to Lake Geneva. Here, an extremely contrasting journey comes to an end.

  • Things to know about the Golden Pass Line
  • Since 2022, it is no longer necessary to change trains in Zweisimmen every time. Certain trains travel directly from Interlaken to Montreux, while others still require a transfer in Zweisimmen with good connections.
  • Trains run once an hour all year round on all sections of the Golden Pass Line.
  • Seat reservations on the Golden Pass Line aren't mandatory. Between Lucerne and Interlaken as well as between Interlaken and Zweisimmen you will always find a seat. To be on the safe side, however, the Golden Pass Panoramic customer service recommends a reservation between Zweisimmen and Montreux. This can be bought at the counters of most major train stations in the region.
  • On the Zentralbahn between Lucerne and Interlaken, you can reserve a seat in the panoramic wagon if you don't want to travel on the "normal" car with "normal-sized" windows. You can either make a reservation at the ticket office in Lucerne, over the phone or online.
  • Several rail passes are accepted on the Golden Pass Line. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, a Eurail, an Interrail or a day pass, the entire journey is covered. With the Swiss Half Fare Card you get 50% reduction on the ticket price.
  • The service on the Golden Pass Line varies between the different train operators. On the Zentralbahn between Lucerne and Interlaken, meals and drinks can be purchased in the Bistro. On the trains between Interlaken and Montreux, there are no meal options for individual travellers. It's best to buy something for the road in Interlaken if you can't stand being without snacks for a few hours.

Gotthard Panorama Express

The Gotthard Panorama Express is, in a way, a historic remnant of Switzerland's impressive railroad history. In summer 2016, the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the longest rail tunnel in the world, was inaugurated. It is 57 km long and shortens the journey to Ticino by 20%. Today, it's no longer necessary to travel via the traditional mountain route between Göschenen and Airolo. The faster route runs from Erstfeld directly to Bodio.

Until 2016, the mountain route was the only way to reach Ticino by train. Today, the traditional route is used by the Gotthard Panorama Express. This train takes its guests through the many helical tunnels and the Gotthard Tunnel, inaugurated in 1882, to the other side of the Alps. This panoramic journey between Lucerne and Lugano is combined with a steamboat-ride on Lake Lucerne and a train ride in the panoramic train through the old Gotthard tunnel.

Route Gotthard Panorama Express

  • Where does the route of the Gotthard Panorama Express pass?

The journey from north to south starts with a trip on the boat from Lucerne . On Lake Lucerne you will travel from Lucerne to Flüelen. This trip is served either by a historic paddle steamer or the modern motor ship "Diamant" . On the way you will pass breathtaking landscapes and historical places like the Tell's Chapel or the Rütli meadow.

In Flüelen the panorama train is waiting for you and continues the journey southwards to Lugano. It climbs over various helical tunnels up to Göschenen, where the old Gotthard tunnel leads to Airolo. The special thing about this stretch is the "Chileli vo Wasse" . The train passes this small chapel in Wassen three times.

To overcome the necessary altitude, the train makes some loops here and you have the opportunity on this section to view the cute chapel from different angles and altitudes. This " Chileli " is so famous among the Swiss population that the Swiss band " Lo & Leduc " even dedicated a song to it.

After crossing the original Gotthard tunnel, the descent follows through the Mediterranean Ticino countryside. You will pass the medieval castles of Bellinzona until you reach Lugano, where a southern flair with palm trees and Italian gelaterias awaits you.

  • Things to know about the Gotthard Panorama Express
  • The Gotthard Panorama Express operates between May and October from Tuesday to Sunday. It departs Lucerne at 11:12 a.m. and Lugano at 9:22 a.m., arriving at its destination 5:30 hours later.
  • If you travel outside this season or prefer a different departure time, you can take the "normal" train through the old Gotthard tunnel. This train runs once an hour between Locarno and Zurich, with the section between Bellinzona and Flüelen being relevant for you. The boats on Lake Lucerne also run all year round. However, in winter there is only one direct trip between Lucerne and Flüelen.
  • A seat reservation is mandatory on the train route with the Gotthard Panorama Express. Regardless of whether you have a GA, a Swiss Travel Pass or any other railway pass. The reservation costs 16.- CHF and can be purchased either online or at the counter at the train station.
  • On the Gotthard Panorama Express train you always travel in first class, while you have the choice between 1st or 2nd class on the boat. Several railway passes are accepted on the Gotthard Panorama Express. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass or a day pass, the whole journey is covered. With the Tellpass you also enjoy free travel between Lucerne and Flüelen. With the Swiss Half Fare Card you get a 50% reduction on the entire journey.
  • If you have an Interrail or Eurail ticket, you travel free of charge on the rail route (apart from the reservation surcharge), while you receive a 50% reduction on the boat ticket.
  • On the ship as well as on the trainm there's the option to buy food. It's not necessary to order your meal in advance. So you can decide spontaneously for a "cold Plättli Ticino style" or a warm lunch.

Voralpen Express

The Voralpen Express is not a panoramic train in the true sense like the other candidates in this article. It neither has oversized panorama windows, nor is it specially designed for tourists. But it's the most comfortable and attractive connection between St. Gallen and Lucerne with beautiful views.

Originally, the Voralpen Express used to serve the route between Romanshorn on Lake Constance and Lucerne. In 2019, however, it was shortened and has since ended or started in St. Gallen.

On the one hand, it is used as a commuter train, but is equally popular with day-trippers due to the varied and scenic route. The Voralpen Express takes "only" just under two and a half hours to cover the approximately 125 km. With an average speed of 55 km/h, this puts it in the same category as the kangaroo.

Goodbye leatherback turtle.

Route Prealps Express

  • Where does the route of the Voralpen Express pass?

In the east, the Voralpen Express begins in the beautiful city of St. Gallen. Shortly after its start, it passes over the 99-meter-high Sitter Viaduct, the highest railroad viaduct in Switzerland. This is followed by another viaduct in Herisau, which scores with its unrestricted view over the Alpstein mountains. Afterwards, the train winds through green, hilly and typically eastern Swiss landscapes that pass by outside your window.

After two long tunnels through the Wasserfluh and the Ricken, the Voralpen Express arrives in Rapperswil on Lake Zurich . This pretty little town with its striking castle is located at the eastern end of the lake dam that leads across Lake Zurich to Pfäffikon. Along this dam is a wooden footbridge that forms part of the Camino de Santiago and is very popular for walking.

If you want to break up your trip, a short stay in Rapperswil followed by a quick walk along the footbridge to Pfäffikon might be a good idea. In Pfäffikon you can continue your journey on the Voralpen Express. From Pfäffikon the train climbs up the hill to Rothenthurm, where you'll pass the largest contiguous high moor area in Switzerland.

Afterwards, you'll be accompanied by more impressive views of the Alps. Soon Lake Zug and Lake Lucerne join the panorama. After a ride along the lake and one last stop at the Museum of Transport Lucerne you will arrive in the city of Lucerne.

  • Things to know about the Voralpen Express
  • The Voralpen Express departs once an hour from St. Gallen and Lucerne between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm. You can breatk up your journey on the way as often as you like and always continue one hour later.
  • You don't need a seat reservation for the Voralpen Express. You have free choice of where you like to sit. Unless you travel during rush hour, which you should not do in Switzerland , you are almost guaranteed a seat.
  • The Voralpen Express has a bistro zone where you can stock up on snacks and drinks.
  • Several railway passes are accepted on the Voralpen Express. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, a Eurail, an Interrail or a day pass, the entire journey is covered. With the Swiss Half Fare Card you get a 50% discount.
  • Swiss Activities Tip: Since you're travelling on a "normal" train here, there are also Supersaver tickets available, which you can buy either on the SBB website or with the SBB app. The earlier you know your travel date, the better your chances of scoring a good deal.

Rapperswil is on the way of the Voralpen Express

More scenic train journeys in Switzerland

Admittedly, these five panoramic trains rightly enjoy a high degree of fame. But if you look at the several thousand kilometers of track in Switzerland, there are countless other scenic sections. These may be less well known, but some of them are also very impressive. So if you are looking for a slightly more "ordinary" and less exclusive route, we will give you a small selection here at the end.

  • Zurich to Chur: Take the express train past Lake Zurich and Lake Walen

The train first travels through the Zimmerberg Base Tunnel. Afterwards, the railroad line to Pfäffikon runs directly along the western shore of Lake Zurich . This means you can enjoy the lake on the left-hand side of the direction of travel. As soon as the train has passed the Ziegelbrücke stop, it passes a lake again. It is the Walensee , which you can also see clearly on the left as far as Walenstadt.

On the right, however, you have a direct view of the Glarus Alps. After Sargans you will see the Pizol in the foreground.

  • Trai ticket Zurich-Chur
  • Chur to Arosa: By regional train over the Langwieser Viaduct

The journey from Chur to Arosa takes an hour. After a leisurely ride through Chur , the train climbs high. The train climbs around 1000 meters in just 26 km. At the start, you can see the Dreibündenstein plateau with the Brambrüsch on the southern side. To the north is the Hochwang chain with the Hochwang at 2533 m above sea level as the highest point. You will see almost untouched nature all around. You quickly reach the mountain landscapes of Schanfigg. Schanfigg is the name of the elongated valley that leads directly to Arosa. The Langwieser Viaduct is a particular highlight of this ride. And it goes even higher: the train climbs up to 1739 m above sea level in Arosa and has thus covered 1155 meters in altitude since Chur. Now you have a view of the Weisshorn chain with the Weisshorn reaching 2653 m above sea level.

  • Train ticket Chur - Arosa

Train on Lake Walen

  • Chur to Davos: By regional train over the Landwasser Viaduct and the Wiesen Viaduct

The InterRegio takes one hour from Chur to Filisur. Then take the regional train for about half an hour to Davos. Near Filisur, the Rhaetian Railway crosses the world-famous Landwasser Viaduct, which is 65 m high and 142 m long and enters a tunnel in a tight curve above the Landwasser Valley. Another viaduct awaits you on the rest of the route, the Wiesen Viaduct. It may not be as famous, but it is almost 89 m high. Both viaducts are only about 3 km apart.

The mountains that you see from Chur on the left (northern) side belong to the Plessuralpen. The Lenzerhorn stands out clearly at 2906 m above sea level. Then you can see the Strelakette of the Plessuralpen on the same side. The Guggernellgrat at 2810 m above sea level is clearly visible.

The other side of the window (from Chur to the right or south) shows you the striking rock of Piz Mitgel southwest of Filisur, which reaches 3159 m above sea level. The slightly higher Piz Ela, at 3339 m above sea level, peeps out behind it. Further along the railroad line towards Davos , the Albula Alps reveal themselves in all their glory.

  • Train ticket Chur - Davos via Filisur
  • Chur to St. Moritz: By regional train along the world-famous Albula line

Between Chur and Filisur, the Rhaetian Railway follows the same route as the train journey to Davos. From Filisur, however, it heads south and, after the Landwasser Viaduct, also has several helical tunnels along the way. They are located between Bergün and Preda and also look very spectacular from below. In winter, a very popular toboggan run runs from Preda to Bergün.

From the right-hand side of the window, you can see the peaks of Piz Bial (3061 m above sea level) and Piz Ot (3247 m above sea level) of the Albula Alps quite clearly in the direction of St. Moritz . Later, Piz Nair (3030 m above sea level) comes into view. On its eastern slope you will find the popular St. Moritz ski area of Corviglia.

  • Train ticket Chur - St. Moritz

  • Between Bern and Lucerne through the Emmental valley

The Emmental lies in the hilly Bernese Plateau. The train runs from Bern via Langnau and also passes the Entlebuch, a huge biosphere that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To the west of Langnau (from Bern on the left-hand side of the journey) you can see the Blasenflue hill country, whose highest point is the Blasenflue at 1118 m above sea level. The train runs right through the middle of the 400 km² UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch Nature Park . Shortly before Lucerne, you will see the striking Pilatus on the right.

  • Between Schaffhausen and Romanshorn: along the Rhine and Lake Constance

The train route between Schaffhausen and Romanshorn takes you through unique countryside and past a number of sights. Heading towards Romanshorn, you will see the Munot fortress towering high above the town right at the start of your journey in Schaffhausen. It has guarded the town of Schaffhausen since the 16th century. From the Feuerthalen train station, you have a more beautiful view on the left-hand side of the train. First you see the High Rhine, which you can see as far as the beautiful town of Stein am Rhein . After a brief look at the medieval houses on the other side of the Rhine, you will see the pilgrimage church of St. Otmar on a small island. The Lake Constance accompanies you on the left-hand side of the route for the rest of the way to Romanshorn. On the right-hand side, you will occasionally see vineyards.

  • Train ticket Schaffhausen - Romanshorn
  • Between St. Gallen and Wasserauen through the hilly landscape of Appenzell

This leisurely ride through the Appenzell countryside takes about an hour. As soon as you leave St. Gallen , a picture-book landscape begins on both sides of the train. Small villages with scattered buildings, interspersed with fields, meadows and forests. Heading towards Wasserauen, you will see the Hundwiler Höhi (1306 m above sea level), a popular vantage point, on the left. Later, on the other side, you can see the Alpstein massif in the distance. Its highest point is the summit of the Säntis (2502 m above sea level).

  • Train ticket St. Gallen - Wasserauen

  • Between Lausanne and Montreux through the UNESCO World Heritage Lavaux wine landscape

The train journey between Lausanne and Montreux is unique. You can't sit on the "wrong" side of the train. Heading towards Montreux, you have a view of the beautiful Lake Geneva with its ships and boats on the right-hand side. But it's not boring on the left-hand side either. Here you will discover the huge Lavaux wine-growing region. The growing area covers around 830 hectares and is spectacularly situated on terraces on Lake Geneva . It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007. The vines here benefit from the reflection of the sun's rays that shine on Lake Geneva. Additional heat is stored in the stone walls around the vines.

  • Between Interlaken Ost and Zermatt: along Lake Thun and through the Bernese and Valais Alps

You change trains twice on the way from Interlaken Ost to Zermatt, but the stunning scenery is your reward. The first stretch from Interlaken Ost takes you to Spiez. All along the route, you have a direct view of Lake Thun to the right and a good view of the Jungfrau region to the left. Incidentally, this route is part of the Golden Pass Express.

On the rest of the journey from Spiez to Visp and on to Zermatt, you travel right through the Bernese and Valais Alps. Between Visp and Zermatt, you cover part of the Glacier Express route. So you can look forward to wonderful views. In Zermatt , the four-thousand-metre peaks with the Matterhorn and the Dufourspitze await you.

  • Between St. Moritz and Alp Grüm: take the regional train over the Bernina Pass

Take the regional train between St. Moritz and Alp Grüm. On this route you travel through the Engadine Alps over the Bernina Pass. The alpine pass runs at 2235 m above sea level. Alp Grüm emerged from a Maiensäss and is a small settlement with a restaurant at the station. The view from its panoramic terrace is particularly spectacular.

  • The Centovalli Railway between Locarno and Domodossola

The Centovalli Railway connects Ticino with Italy and thus extends the Gotthard Railway line to the Simplon line in Domodossola.

The leisurely narrow-gauge railroad takes you through the "100 valleys" of the Centovalli and the adjoining Valle Vigezzo. You will pass through a number of tunnels and cross 83 bridges and viaducts. All around you will see a sleepy and largely untouched landscape with the River Melezza and beautiful waterfalls. Small Settlements are scattered across the landscape. It is not until you reach Italy that the villages through which the little train passes become somewhat larger. And you will notice that there are many churches along the route. The ride on the little train is a special experience.

Immerse Yourself in the Swiss Alps on an Express Train That Takes Its Time

For instance, guests can splurge on a multi-course meal or opt for a la carte items like regional cheese plates and chicken tikka masala. As of a 2020 renovation to celebrate the train line’s 90th anniversary, Wi-Fi and power sockets are also available to every passenger for free. Meanwhile, the seats themselves are comfortable, while the cars are spacious and relaxing to be in. Trust us when we say that if you haven’t yet sipped a crisp white from a tilted glass while traversing the Alps , it’s unclear if you’ve even lived. So, ready to climb aboard one of the most scenic train rides in the world ? Here’s what you need to know to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime travel experience.

How to book your trip on the Glacier Express

An individual ticket ranges from 73 Swiss francs to 268 Swiss francs depending on how far you go and whether you’re cool with second class or want to get fancy in first class . (That’s about $83 and $306, respectively.) The seat reservation fee ranges from 29 Swiss francs to 420 Swiss francs. The cheaper end is for a first or second-class seat during the low season (December to May) going a shorter distance, while the more expensive fees are for those living it up in the so-called “excellence class” during the high season (May to October)—for the full eight-hour trip, of course.

Whatever type of ticket you choose, the journey is mostly about the view, and you can get that anywhere on the train. It should go without saying that snagging a window seat is the way to go, so you don’t have to lean over a stranger to snap your pics. But don’t worry too much about what side of the train you’re on—if you’re going the full route, the train actually reverses directions going into and out of Chur. It is wise, however, to go for a spot in the middle of the coach, so you’ll be guaranteed a wider view regardless of which way you’re traveling.

Where to start and stop on the Glacier Express

One of the Glacier Express’ termini, St. Moritz has twice hosted the winter Olympics. That means it’s heaven for anyone into skiing or snowboarding, though it’s hard to imagine not having a good time there. It’s a place to hike, mountain bike, or even slide down a famous bobsled run at breakneck speeds. And for those who aren’t into the outdoors at all, St. Moritz has a range of swanky shops, grand hotels, and really everything you need to relax without worrying you might also fall on your face.

While the Glacier Express only runs between St. Moritz and Zermatt, you’re not required to start your journey at those specific stops. For many passengers, the town of Chur makes a great starting point. It’s often called the oldest town in Switzerland, and is still host to millennia-old archeological finds. The quaint, car-free Old Town is well-preserved and a great place for a stress-free stroll. Chur also has the highest concentration of restaurants and bars in the country. Not only that, it’s the largest shopping center between Zurich and Milan.

Notable sights along the way

Rhine gorge.

They call it the “ Grand Canyon of Switzerland,” and it was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in June 2002 for good reason. This place is a serious beaut. It’s largely inaccessible by road, so enjoy the opportunity to sit back and see the results of a prehistoric rockslide. Today, it’s where the Rhine River winds through massive geological formations, resulting in a picturesque ravine.

Albula Line

The Albula Line, a twisting section of the railway located between Filisur and St. Moritz, is where you’ll traverse many of those viaducts and tunnels that make the Glacier Express so incredible—including the famous Landwasser Viaduct. Anyone interested in railway engineering—or stunning scenery—is sure to be impressed. It is, after all, a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well.

Landwasser Viaduct

Did someone say viaducts? The Landwasser Viaduct is the most famous along the Glacier Express route, standing at 65 meters (or a little over 213 feet high) and stretching 142 meters (or around 466 feet long) before disappearing into a tunnel. Since it comes up just outside of the village of Filisur, it’s a good reason to make sure your chosen itinerary includes the railway’s eastern section. You’ll be able to see—and enjoy—the marvel’s highly pronounced curve from fairly far away.
