Whether you're based in Switzerland or travelling through Europe, with trains from Switzerland to Italy you can quickly and cheaply cross the border and see the best of these beautiful countries. Journeys by rail mean you can enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Swiss-Italian border in comfort and explore exciting destinations, including Geneva, Zurich, Milan and Tirano.

Switzerland to Italy train travel time

The journey time on train trips from Switzerland to Italy depends on your specific start and end points. To take a popular example, trains from Zurich to Milan can take as little as 3 hours and 20 minutes. Geneva to Milan train trips can be as short as 4 hours and Chur (Coira) to Milan can be accomplished in around five hours. Direct Eurocity trains depart throughout the day, with the earliest typically leaving before dawn and the latest far into the evening.

Of course, if you're travelling between border towns, your train trips will likely be short and sweet. Trains from Lugano to Como take just half an hour, for example. This is an ideal way to see another country while staying in Southern Switzerland, taste an entirely different cuisine and take in the sights of somewhere new. Longer train journeys, however, have the advantage of bringing you on something of a tour of Switzerland and Northern Italy. Often cited as being the most beautiful scenery in Europe, it's a trip well worth taking.

Scenic trains from Switzerland to Italy

To take the route from Geneva to Milan as an example, you'll travel through a diverse range of geographies on your train trip. Pass alongside the crystal blue waters of the mighty Lake Geneva before heading through the alpine border region of Switzerland and Italy. Then, you'll move through the Gruyère Pays-d'Enhaut Regional Nature Park. This is a typically Swiss stretch of green hilly land where you'll have plenty of opportunities to take amazing photos. Finally, enter and then emerge from the Val Grande National Park in Italy to arrive in chic Milan .

You can also plan your trip to take in multiple cities along the way. Stop at Bern, Switzerland's capital, where you can see the Parliament Building and stroll through the Old City. This is easily achievable as a slight detour from Geneva or Zurich. You can also head to Como in Northern Italy, a favoured locale of the celebrity jet set.

From Chur to Tirano by train

Train travel from Chur to Tirano can be achieved in as little as four hours on direct trips with Bernina Express . The history of quaint Chur in Switzerland dates back to its settlement in prehistoric times. Today, the town's traditional houses and winding streets sit below mighty green hills, and the town features a range of beautiful parks to explore. Active travellers will adore the opportunities to hike and even ski nearby. This is a marvellous place to experience authentic Switzerland, among peaceful and attractive surroundings.

When you arrive in Tirano, you'll discover another charming little town, sitting at an important crossroads of Northern Italy. Breathtaking views of waterfalls and miles of forest will inspire you to explore the area. There are beautiful old churches in and around the town. Salis Palace and Museum feature stunning architecture, with magnificent artefacts and frescoes to admire. A trip from Chur to Tirano is an opportunity to reconnect with nature, as well as experience the traditional side of both countries while on holiday.

From Geneva to Milan by train

Trips from Geneva to Milan are among the most popular ways to cross from Switzerland to Italy. Geneva is one of Europe's, and indeed the world's, most important political centres. It's here that you'll find the UN's Palace of Nations, as well as the United Nations Office and the HQ of the Red Cross. Witnessing these institutions up close is a wonderful way to appreciate the way countries interact with each other, which is particularly appropriate on a multi-country train trip!

Milan is famous as Italy's capital of fashion. There are many places to shop for designer brands here. The Quadrilatero d’Oro, or Golden Rectangle, is made up of four streets of high fashion and chic boutiques. Milan's innovative fashion spirit extends to less costly brands too, with outlet shops like DMAG offering beautiful low-priced clothing. The outstanding Duomo di Milano, or Milan Cathedral, is a Gothic beauty that's well worth seeing during your stay. Most trains arrive at Milan Central Station .

From Zurich to Milan by train

Starting your journey from Zurich, you can pass through much of the beauty of Switzerland before arriving in Italy. As the financial capital of the country, Zurich is an impressive and surprisingly traditional city. Strikingly different in appearance to, say, Frankfurt, you'll find prime examples of attractive and classic Swiss architecture, such as the Fraumünster Church. The Swiss National Museum will also bring you closer to the origins of this unique and gorgeous European country.

Zurich to Milan is one of the quickest city-to-city routes from Switzerland to Italy and will allow you to see many of the best sights of both countries. The rural scenery is equally breathtaking to the journey from Geneva to Milan, with the border crossing at Mount San Giorgio being a particular highlight. Pack the good camera, or perhaps just allow yourself to sit back and take in these dramatic and dazzling landscapes. Before you know it, you'll be at your destination and it will be time to check out a new city.

The best of Switzerland and Italy by train

Train travel has many advantages when travelling from Switzerland to Italy. You'll have the opportunity to truly take in the incredible scenery Switzerland and Northern Italy are famous for. Plus, train travel is quick and cheap. You can easily take day trips across the border before heading back to Switzerland , or perhaps make a spontaneous decision spend a few days or longer at your destination to really take it in.

How to Travel Between Italy and Switzerland by Train

switzerland train tour to italy

Leonid Andronov / Getty Images

If your trip to Europe includes stays in both Italy and Switzerland, traveling between the two countries by train is a convenient option, especially if you don't want to rent a car. While the process of getting from Italy to Switzerland, or vice versa, is mostly straightforward, there are a few things you should know before undertaking your journey.

There are essentially two main corridors for train travel between Italy and Switzerland. Almost all trains entering Switzerland from Italy begin in either Milan or Tirano, a small town on the Swiss border. Likewise, trains from Switzerland to Italy terminate in one of these two locations. The one exception is a single daily, direct train that runs between Venice, Italy and Geneva, Switzerland.

Milan is connected to the rest of Italy by high-speed or slower regional trains. If you're planning to travel from elsewhere in Italy on the same day you go from Milan to Switzerland, keep an eye on those schedules. Allow yourself at least an hour to connect in Milan, especially if you're arriving in Milan on an Intercity or Regionale train. Your train might be late reaching Milano Centrale, meaning you'll miss your connecting train to Switzerland. Not only will you have to wait several hours for the next train, but you may also have to buy a new ticket, pay a stiff change penalty, and miss out on your first choice of seats or carriages. Some of us have learned this lesson the hard way.

Travel Between Switzerland from Milan

From Milano Centrale, Milan's large, main train station, direct trains depart for the Swiss cities of Geneva, Basel, and Zurich. Routes and travel times are as follows, and we highlighted some of the major cities on these routes:

  • EC 32 or 36 Milan to Geneva: 4 hours, with stops in Stresa (Lake Maggiore), Domodossola, Brig, Sion, Montreux, and Lausanne
  • EC 50, 52 or 56 Milan to Basel: 4 hours, 12 minutes, with stops in Stresa (Lake Maggiore), Domodossola, Brig, Visp, Spiez, Thun, Bern, and Olten (EC 56 also stops in Liestal)
  • EC 358 Milan to Basel: 4 hours, 46 minutes, with stops in Monza, Como S. Giovanni (Lake Como), Chiasso, Lugano, Bellinzona, Arth-Goldau, Rotkreuz, Lucerne, and Olten
  • EC 310, 312, 314, 316, 320, 322. 324 Milan to Zurich: 3 hours, 40 minutes, with stops in Monza, Como S. Giovanni (Lake Como), Chiasso, Lugano, Bellinzona, Arth-Goldau, Rotkreuz, and Zug (EC 312 does not stop at Monza)

These trains are part of the EuroCity network, which are international trains connecting major cities across Europe. EuroCity trains run under the jurisdiction of whatever country they're in. This means you can purchase EuroCity train tickets from both the Italian (Trenitalia) and Swiss (SBB) national train services. When the train is in Italy, you are traveling with Trenitalia. When the train crosses into Switzerland, you're traveling with SBB.

EuroCity trains are labeled EC on train schedules. To function as an EC train, trains must meet specific criteria. Among them, they must be high-speed and only stop in train stations in or near major cities. They must have first- and second-class carriages, all cars must be air-conditioned, and there must be dining services aboard.

Seat reservations are required on all EuroCity trains (unless you're traveling with a Swiss Travel Pass). While second-class carriages are perfectly comfortable, first-class carriages tend to be less crowded, quieter, and they generally have cleaner bathrooms. Still, if you're traveling on a budget, you'll be perfectly comfortable in second-class train cars, especially for shorter trips.

In Milan's sprawling station, you'll be asked to show your printed, PDF, or e-ticket before you can access the train platform. Once onboard, a conductor will recheck your ticket. Once you cross into Switzerland, SBB conductors may take over and again ask to see your ticket—they may also request your passport or other official identification. If you're making the trip from Switzerland to Milan, expect more or less the same process in reverse.

If you're traveling during the day and the weather is clear, you can expect some lovely scenery. Depending on the route, you may catch glimpses of Lake Como or Lake Maggiore, the Italian and Swiss Alps, Lake Geneva, or Lake Lucerne. Trains traveling between Milan and Lucerne, Zurich, and Basel pass through the Gotthard Base Tunnel. At around 35 miles long, it is the world's longest and deepest train tunnel. Opened in 2016, it shortened travel time between Milan and points in Switzerland by up to an hour, since it goes through—rather than up and over—the Alps.

Traveling with a Swiss Travel Pass

The Swiss Travel Pass , which makes travel by train, bus, boat, and even cogwheel rail so easy and convenient in Switzerland, complicates things just a little when traveling to or from Italy. If you're going from Milan to anywhere in Switzerland and you have already purchased a Swiss Travel Pass, you only need to buy a ticket that's good as far as the first city across the Swiss border. For example, for travel from Milan to Geneva, you'd purchase a ticket as far as Brig, the first stop in Switzerland. Then just stay on the train, and when the SBB train conductor checks tickets, present your Swiss Travel Pass. If you bought second-class tickets for the Italian portion of your trip, but your Swiss Travel Pass is for first-class travel, you can change train carriages once you're in Switzerland—though it's not necessary to do so.

Likewise, holders of the Swiss Travel Pass who are leaving Switzerland bound for Italy need only purchase a ticket for the Italian portion of their trip. Seat reservations are compulsory for the Italian leg of the journey but are not required on most Swiss trains. So the trick is to reserve the Italian ticket with seat reservation in Switzerland, board the train and not have to change seats once you cross into Italy. We've found the easiest way to do this is in person at an SBB ticket office. The SBB staff person will give you a seat assignment for the Swiss leg of your journey (which you usually wouldn't need) that's valid to Milan. You'll pay a service fee of a few Swiss francs for the seat reservation within Switzerland.

Travel Between Tirano and Switzerland and Venice and Switzerland

Two other routes also connect Italy to Switzerland. The first is one of the most spectacular train rides in Europe—the Bernina Express from Tirano, Italy to St. Moritz, Switzerland. The scenic train climbs from Tirano up to the Bernina Glacier, then down into Pontresina and St. Moritz. Trains are run by the Rhaetian Railway . For more information, read our complete guide to the Bernina Express .

From Venice's Santa Lucia Station, there is one daily train to Geneva, Switzerland. The EuroCity 42 train leaves Venice at 4:18 p.m. and makes a lot of stops before arriving at Geneva at midnight. Stops are Venezia Mestre, Padova, Vicenza, Verona Porta Nuova, Peschiera Del Garda, Brescia, Milano Centrale, Gallarate, Domodossola, Brig, Sion, Montreux, and Lausanne. The seven-hour EuroCity 37 leaves Geneva at 7:39 a.m. and makes the same stops in reverse, arriving at Venice at 2:42 p.m.

Review by Marilyn & Terry

We have taken two trips with JayWay and have received excellent service each time. As we’ve gotten older we still prefer independent travel but really like the extra assistance with transfers, local into private tours and so much information about each place we went.Highly recommend!

Review by Ali, Marguerite, Paula & Amy

JayWay was easy to work with, had great ideas and were very responsive. We always felt taken care of and their contacts are top-notch!

Review by Mark & Suzanne

We have had Switzerland as a bucket item for a few years. I started out looking at river cruises, but it didnt hit what we wanted. Googled Swiss trips, and Jayway came up. From interest to commitment to scheduling hotels, excursions, transfers, the personnel at Jayway have been topnotch. The interaction between online requests and respinses, and timeline issues, as well as last minute changes have been well anticipated by staff and handled easily. Cant say enough about the experience over 11 days. Just would recommend Jayway for your extensive travel needs.

Frequently Asked Questions about Travel to Italy and Switzerland

Most of our guests travel to Italy & Switzerland from the US by air, unless they are already traveling in a neighboring country. There are direct flights from the US to many of the large cities in Italy and Switzerland, such as Geneva, Zurich, Milan, Rome, Venice, and Naples. We usually recommend getting an “open jaw” ticket which has you flying in to the first city on your trip and out of the last. This will save time and usually cost less when you factor in the cost of returning to the first city on your itinerary. The exception is if you opt for a self-drive itinerary, in which case a round trip route will make more sense due to one-way fees. Although we don’t sell airfare, our travel advisors will help you pick out the best fare and routing.

With the journey from the United States always involving an overnight flight, it’s usually best to make your first stop a city that has direct flights if possible, or with the least changes. In Switzerland that’s usually Zurich. For Italy, typically Rome or Milan.

Much depends on what you want to do on your vacation. If you are interested in hiking when in Switzerland then May to September is ideal. If winter sports are your thing then December through mid April usually guarantees good snow conditions. Northern Italy’s lakes and mountains have similar weather to Switzerland but further south temperatures are usually warmer. Unless you like very hot weather, or are planning a beach and seaside vacation, we suggest avoiding southern Italy from mid July to the end of August.

All our tours are custom, based on your preferences for accommodation, excursions and transport method. All our suggested Italy and Switzerland itineraries have a price guide function so you can get an instant price estimate. In general Switzerland is much more expensive than Italy, so reducing the number of nights spent in Switzerland can result in big savings.

Just visiting all the highlights of Switzerland could take a couple of weeks. To see all of Italy could take several years. At a minimum we suggest a ten night itinerary, to give a taste of each country, which can be adjusted to include your choice of destinations and activities. Our travel advisors will help you pinpoint the places and kinds of experiences to concentrate on.

In Switzerland, a combination of train and private transfer will get you everywhere you need to go. In Italy the major cities are very well connected by train, but for certain segments of your trip, particularly in regions like Tuscany, or Puglia, you might prefer to self-drive. We can include a car rental in your package if you require.

Italy uses the Euro while Switzerland has the Swiss Franc. Although part of the Schengen Agreements (which covers trade, and border controls) Switzerland is not a member of the EU.

All our tours of Italy & Switzerland are private tours. You will work with our travel advisors to create your perfect tour itinerary, based on your dates, interests, and budget. You get to choose how busy or relaxed your schedule is. We like to call this semi-independent travel and we think it’s the better way to take a Europe tour. We make all the arrangements, from airport transfers, accommodation, full day and half day guided tours with a local guide, and transport between cities. You can opt for private or group excursions and activities as part of your package. And you can choose to leave some free time for exploring on your own. Unlike an escorted tour, you aren’t paying to have a guide and driver the whole time, just when needed, so our packages are more affordable too. Our local staff handle the role of trip leader remotely too, to keep the total price of your trip down.

A lot depends on your destinations. Public transportation between major destinations in both countries is a good option. There are good high speed rail links from many Swiss cities to Northern Italian destinations such as Milan and Venice, and in some cases local trains between close-by destinations like Lugano and Como. Private transfers are another option, and allow you to make a sightseeing stop on the way. At certain times of year traveling by road isn’t the best idea as routes like the Gotthard Tunnel can involve a several-hour wait. If you are combining Switzerland with central or southern Italy, an intra-European short flight might be quicker and more economical. Renting a car for both countries is only practical if picking up and dropping off in the same country. If you rent a car in Italy and want to take it to Switzerland, you will need a Swiss Highway sticker, which is only available in an annual version.

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions

Can i book my roundtrip in advance.

Yes and advance booking is highly recommended, especially for the busy summer season when demand is particularly high. Packages can be booked easily, online or via one of our travel experts.

What is the best time of year to take the trip?

This depends on your personal preferences. Each season offers something different:

  • Spring (April to May) : Ideal for nature lovers, as landscapes bloom and temperatures are pleasant. There may still be snow at higher altitudes.
  • Summer (June to August) : The best time to enjoy the full splendour of the Swiss countryside, especially if intending to hike or cycle. The weather is warm and days are long however, this is also peak season for visitors.
  • Autumn (September to November) : Great for photography enthusiasts, as colours change to magnificent seasonal shades while the weather remains mild.
  • Winter (December to February) : This season brings magical snowy landscapes and the opportunity to experience Switzerland’s winter sports resorts.

In general, spring and autumn mean pleasant weather, while summer is ideal for those that love sun and outdoor activities. Winter offers a unique opportunity to enjoy snow-covered Alpine landscapes.

Please note that it is only possible to complete the full Grand Train Tour of Switzerland from spring to autumn, due to the seasonal opening of the Gotthard Panorama Express route.

Can I travel with children?

Yes, trains in Switzerland are suitable for passengers of all ages, including families with children but please do note the following important points:

  • Tickets:  Children can benefit from reduced fares, depending on their age. Please contact our travel experts for more specific information about your booking.
  • Entertainment and Activities:  Remember to bring something (books or games) to keep your children occupied.
  • Snacks and Refreshments: The Glacier Express, Goldenpass Express and Gotthard Panorama Express boat all offer catering options but we, nevertheless, recommend that you bring plenty of snacks and drinks for your children.

Are the trains wheelchair accessible?

Yes, the trains are wheelchair accessible. Please contact one of our travel experts to organise your trip.

What is the difference between 1st and 2nd class?

The main differences between 1st and 2nd class are the seat arrangement and comfort. In 1st class, passengers enjoy larger, more comfortable seats with additional legroom and space for luggage. The seating arrangement is usually 2+1, meaning two seats to one side of the aisle and one on the other, offering more privacy. In 2nd class, there are usually two seats on either side of the aisle. Although 2nd class seats are still comfortable, they offer slightly less space and legroom than those in 1st class.

How do I get around Switzerland?

There are many ways to get around Switzerland , the two main ways are using public transportation and renting a car. I’ll highlight the best way to get to each destination below. This Switzerland itinerary can easily be used with either a car or by train.

If you choose to get a rental car in Switzerland, I always recommend using this site to compare rates and cars.

If you choose to use public transportation in Switzerland, I recommend getting the Swiss Travel Pass to maximize your time and save you money. The Swiss Travel Pass offers unlimited train rides on most lines, free or discounted gondola rides, and discounts to many attractions though Switzerland.

I find that it’s especially worth buying the Swiss Travel Pass if you are planning to visit Zermatt because the expensive Gornergratt train is quite expensive, and it’s half off with the pass. If you’re comfortable riding trains and buses, I think it’s the best way to travel in Switzerland.

Where do I purchase my Swiss Travel Pass?

You can purchase your Swiss Travel Pass here . Just select the correct number of days for your Switzerland itinerary and check out. The pass begins on your selected date and runs continuously. The Swiss Travel Pass comes in. 3, 4, 6, 8, and 15 day increments.

Swiss Half Fare Card

If you’re unsure of your dates or the amount of time your Switzerland itinerary will be, it might be a good idea to purchase a Swiss Half Fare Card instead. This pass is good for one month and will offer 50% off most trains. There seems to be less of a discount on shorter journeys. I prefer to purchase the more expensive Swiss Travel Pass just for ease of use while I am in the country. But the Swiss Half Fare Card may be a better option if you are only planning on taking several long and expensive rail journeys. You can purchase the Swiss Half Fare Card here .

Renting a Car in Switzerland

If you want a little more freedom during your trip, you may want to consider renting a car in Switzerland . You’ll have the ability to reach some more off-the-beaten-path places that trains can’t reach. Driving in Switzerland is easy, especially if you’re from the US because they drive on the right side of the road.

Download the SBB App for Switzerland Transportation

SBB App – Public transportation in Switzerland is shockingly punctual, clean, fast, and efficient. The SBB app will tell you when and where to get your trains and buses to take you where you want to go. This is the most important app you’ll need in Switzerland if you’re only traveling by public transportation.

I hope this guide to Switzerland transportation will help you get around the country with ease. Be sure to check out the most beautiful places in Switzerland and our Switzerland Itinerary.

There are lots of pros and cons to renting a car in Switzerland and using public transportation. Here’s a good list

Here is a list of pros and cons for traveling Switzerland by train vs. by rental car:

Traveling by Train in Switzerland

  • More scenic views out the window
  • Can relax and enjoy the ride
  • No need to focus on driving/navigation
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Arrive directly in city centers
  • Less flexibility with schedule/stops
  • Can be more expensive
  • Limited luggage space
  • More flexibility with schedule and route
  • Can stop wherever you want
  • Usually cheaper than train
  • More privacy
  • Can carry more luggage
  • Less scenic views
  • Have to focus on driving
  • More planning required for navigation
  • Have to find and pay for parking
  • More environmental impact

I hope this helps you plan your trip to Switzerland!
