The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

Putting a 21st century spin on the hip late-'60s world of Burt Bacharach, Sly Stone, and Barbarella, Denmark's the Asteroids Galaxy Tour had barely let their demo out into the world before fame came calling thanks to Amy Winehouse and the iPod family. Multi-instrumentalist Lars Iversen and vocalist Mette Lindberg formed the Asteroids in 2007. Thanks to a freshly pressed demo landing in the right hands, their debut gig was an opening slot at the request of Winehouse when the superstar singer visited the duo's hometown of Copenhagen. Soon after they were signed to the major label Universal who released their debut single, "The Sun Ain't Shining No More," in 2008. As the Asteroids were preparing their debut album and expanding their live lineup to a six-piece, their B-52's-flavored, retro-party single was featured in a television commercial for Apple's iPod Touch MP3 player. ~ David Jeffries

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour is an indie and psychedelic pop band from Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen. They formed in 2007 and have built a reputation of their songs featuring in Film, TV and Commercials.

It was in their formative years that the band decided to record a demo. The demo was heard by Amy Winehouse’ management, who asked the group to open for her in Copenhagen. This was the band’s first live show, and soon after, their track “Around the Bend” was chosen by Apple to be used in the new iPod Touch commercial and to be aired worldwide from December 2008. After the success of the commercial, this track became the band’s biggest single to date helping to launch the band onto the international stage. They even supported Katy Perry on her 2009 summer tour in Europe.

The band has had a lot of promotion, with their works being used in TV commercials, Film and TV shows. Myer, Australia’s largest department store chain used the song “the Golden Age" to launch their 2009 summer range and SBS Television used the song “The Golden Age” to promote the U.S. television series, Mad Men. Even Heineken International used the song in the 2011 commercial, “The Entrance” where the band in fact featured in the commercial.

“Around the Bend" is featured in the Anna Wintour documentary movie, The September Issue which was released in 2009. In 2008, three songs by the band were featured on the Gossip Girl episode “It’s a Wonderful Life”. “Around the Bend" was featured in the NBC TV series Chuck in episode 209. “The Sun Ain’t Shining No More” has been selected as the theme song of the Canadian action comedy television series InSecurity, which premiered on January 4th 2011.

The band has experienced chart success with their song “The Golden Age” which became a hit in Austria, Switzerland, Spain, UK, Canada and the US. They released an album called “Bring Us Together” on September 15th 2014.

Live reviews

Shooting to some kind of fame after ‘The Golden Age’ was used to market a popular beer, all the hard work put in by Danish act Asteroids Galaxy Tour since forming in 2007 has finally started to pay off. The core duo of Mette Lindberg and Lars Iversen write complex pop songs with killer hooks filling their albums Fruit and Out of Frequency with great songs that could really all be used to market whatever you like, such is the power of the band’s catchy hooks. Some of AGT’s songs have been used during rather well-known TV programmes like Chuck and Gossip Girl, while Mette herself appeared as a guest on Never Mind the Buzzcocks back in 2008. But never mind all that, what about the music itself? Well, Mette Lindberg is the one to watch, a bundle of energy and in possession of a powerful voice that one moment can sound helium-filled, the next she’s belting songs out like a soul singer. They will of course play ‘The Golden Age’, its swinging 60s feel supplemented by a dose of electronica but there’s also the giddy ‘Heart Attack’ which has crazy synths burbling over a little garage rock riff and the set will close out with the funky brass attack of ‘Major’ – which, in fact, is by far their best song. It will probably turn out that you know more Asteroids Galaxy Tour songs than you think – and the ones you don’t? Well, that’s just a bonus.

Despite sounding more like a live schedule than a band, Danish pop outfit The Asteroids Galaxy Tour have forged quite a reputation for themselves following the release of their debut album 'Fruit' in 2009. The brain child of vocalist and producer Mette Lindberg and Lars Iversen, TAGT have become known through central Europe as one of the liveliest and most involving acts on the circuit.

Bounding onstage in a wash of colour and sound, the five musicians take their place and warmly greet the crowd before performing a double opener of 'Hero' and 'Push The Envelope'. The energy is clearly infectious and the audience are beginning to move, jump and even dance in places under the command of the likeable Mette. They work through a setlist primarily comprising of tracks from 'Fruit' yet there is some new music showcased this evening with similarly shiny production and infectious melodic hooks. There is no doubt that The Asteriods Galaxy Tour are one of the most fun artists currently working.

This is an annotated NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image of the barred spiral galaxy UGC 12158, with compass arrows, a scale bar, and colour key for reference. It looks like someone took a white marking pen to it. In reality it is a combination of time exposures of a foreground asteroid moving through Hubble’s field of view, photobombing the observation of the galaxy. Several exposures of the galaxy were taken, which is evidenced by the dashed pattern.

The asteroid appears as a curved trail as a result of parallax: Hubble is not stationary, but orbiting Earth, and this gives the illusion that the faint asteroid is swimming along a curved trajectory. The uncharted asteroid is inside the asteroid belt in our Solar System, and hence is 10 trillion times closer to Hubble than the background galaxy.

Rather than being a nuisance, this type of data is useful to astronomers for doing a census of the asteroid population in our Solar System.

[ Image description : Annotated image of barred spiral galaxy UGC 12158 against the black background of space, with compass arrows, a scale bar, and colour key for reference. The galaxy has a pinwheel shape made up of bright blue stars wound around a yellow-white hub of central stars. The galaxy is tilted face-on to our view from Earth. A slightly S-shaped white line across the top is the Hubble image of an asteroid streaking across Hubble’s view. Indicated filters are expressed as: “F475W” in blue, “F606W” in green, and “F814W” in red. Watch newly discovered asteroid fly between Earth and moon on Jan. 27 (video)

The space rock poses no threat to our planet, despite being on a path to zoom between Earth and the moon.

Near-Earth Asteroid 2024 BJ very close encounter: online observation – 27 Jan. 2024 - YouTube

Update for Jan. 28: Astronomer Gianluca Masi was able to capture some fascinating footage of asteroid 2024 BJ during its flyby of Earth on Jan. 27. Watch the space rock zoom by our planet on Space.com (above) thanks to the Virtual Telescope Project or on the project's YouTube channel .

An asteroid discovered earlier this month will reach its closest point to Earth on Saturday (Jan. 27), when it will soar through the sky at a distance closer to us than the moon.

Astronomers first detected the up to 121-foot-wide (37 meters) asteroid, dubbed 2024 BJ, on Jan. 17. They  documented  their discovery the following day, after calculating that the rock will safely soar past our planet without incident.

The asteroid will fly close to the moon just before 9 a.m. EST (1400 GMT) before zooming past Earth three and a half hours later at an estimated speed of 14,200 mph (22,850 km/h). The flying space rock will reach its closest point to Earth at 12:30 p.m. EST (1730 GMT), according to  NASA .

You can watch the airplane-size asteroid as it sails just 220,000 miles (354,000 kilometers) from Earth — more than nine tenths of the average distance between our planet and the moon — on a  Virtual Telescope Project livestream  from 12:15 p.m. EST (1715 GMT). On the live, you can expect to see the asteroid as a white speck moving quickly among the background stars.

an illustration of an asteroid's orbit, showing it passing close by Earth

2024 BJ is a near-Earth asteroid of the Apollo type, which means its  egg-shaped orbit crosses that of Earth  to reach its closest point to the sun before turning around and extending out toward the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Apollo asteroids, of which over 1,600 are currently known, make up the majority of the population of Earth-crossing and  potentially hazardous asteroids . But fear not: 2024 BJ is nowhere near large enough to be considered hazardous. In fact, Earth appears to be safe from asteroids — at least from cataclysmic, "planet-killer" ones measuring more than 0.6 miles (1 km) across —  for the next 1,000 years .

And if a currently unknown planet-killer should happen to sneak up on us — say,  from the direction of the glaring sun  — scientists already have a few plans for dealing with such an Earth-threatening catastrophe, including attempting to deflect the space rock with rockets, or possibly with  nuclear weapons detonated in space . Hopefully, we'll never have to put such a mission to the test.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.

Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.
