the heart's voyage tarot

“By frequent remembering of our infinite nature, we reclaim the universe within us.” – James Wanless PhD

Are you ready to discover a different sort of tarot deck? If you’ve grown a little tired of the traditional aesthetic of tarot, then you may be ready to discover the Voyager. It’s been around for decades now, yet still feels remarkably fresh and relevant.

the heart's voyage tarot

The third tarot deck I ever got was the Voyager, co-created by James Wanless, PhD and Ken Knutson. I first encountered it at a local bookstore and was immediately drawn in by the picture on the box. That picture was of a card known as “Time-Space”, and was surreal, transportive, and even psychedelic. I followed my intuition and decided to purchase the Voyager. I had no idea what to expect, and what I soon discovered was something unlike any I’ve seen, before or since.

A Modern Take on the Tarot Tradition

The Voyager is unlike other tarot decks in a few remarkable ways. Firstly, it avoids the usual medieval imagery that you find on many traditional decks. You won’t find pictures of kings and queens on thrones, knights on horses, and other motifs from the Marseille tradition or RWS-influenced decks. This is a breath of fresh air for those who struggle to connect to the pictures on what is considered “normal” tarot. Tarot arose during the European Renaissance, and the images we see in traditional decks reflect that era.

It’s important to understand that tarot is a system of universal symbolic images. It is not intrinsic to the Renaissance or the imagery we see on traditional decks. Rather, the symbols and archetypes transcend any era, culture, or particular style. Tarot is just as relevant today as it was when it emerged, and it’s just as useful in Asia or Africa as in Europe. While traditional decks don’t adequately reflect the universal nature of tarot, Voyager does.

Some people can relate to the imagery on Marseille or Rider-Waite-style decks, but others struggle. A modern deck such as Voyager revives tarot’s themes for a contemporary worldview and makes it universal. This deck utilizes images from all over the world and from different eras. Asian, African, and Native American cultures are represented. Wildlife and majestic scenes from nature are explored. There are images from antiquity along with modern themes like big cities, scientific discoveries, and space exploration. The modernization of the tarot tradition is Voyager’s single-greatest asset.

The Voyager Aesthetic

As you initially flip through the Voyager deck, it immediately becomes obvious that this is not typical tarot. The style is unlike any you’ve seen before. Each card is comprised of a visually-striking photo collage containing many symbolic images. All the images within the card, taken together, capture the spirit of that card.

the heart's voyage tarot

On the other hand, it can be overwhelming trying to take it all in. I suggest not trying to interpret too much too fast. Focus first on what your eyes pick up on initially. These first impressions may be all you need to get the intuitive message from the card, without having to study the entire collage in detail. A thorough scan of the card is optional, depending on how much time you want to devote to your reading and how insightful your initial impression of the card is.

Some may find a thorough study of each card to be helpful in gaining greater understanding, but others may find it’s too much work. When I use the Voyager deck, my method of reading depends on what feels right at the time. Often a quick first impression is enough. When it isn’t, however, I find a detailed examination of the card brings intuitive wisdom and depth.

The Deck Structure

The Voyager deck contains the traditional 78-card structure. There are the usual 22 cards of the major arcana, 40 minor arcana cards of Ace through 10 in four suits, and a set of 16 personality cards, known as court cards in traditional decks.

The major arcana are essentially the same as you would find with traditional decks. These cards represent the primary archetypes of the experience of life. Here you’ll find the Magician, Empress, Wheel of Fortune, the Tower, and the rest. The Voyager diverts a little in some of the names of these cards, but the themes remain essentially true to tarot’s tradition. For example, the Fool is changed to the Fool-Child; Justice is now Balance; Temperance is called Art, and Judgement is changed to Time-Space. (This card still blows me away.) The changes made to these cards nicely modernize the themes without straying from what makes the major arcana so effective to work with. The images are striking and unforgettable.

the heart's voyage tarot

The meanings of some of the minor arcana are noticeably different from traditional tarot. These changes are made more apparent by a single keyword on each card. For example, most experienced users don’t associate the 4 of Cups with “Anger”, the 6 of Cups with “Sorrow”, or the 6 of Swords (here Crystals) as “Confusion”. Tarot newcomers aren’t likely to even notice these changes, but seasoned practitioners will have to adjust to them. My suggestion for the experienced user is to relinquish your usual interpretations when using this deck. Voyager’s uniqueness is its greatest asset, but only if you’re willing to go along fully for the ride.

In place of the customary court cards, Voyager contains 16 family cards. Instead of the usual King, Queen, Knight, and Page (or Prince and Princess), we get a Sage, Father, Mother, and Child of each suit. The Father is akin to the King and the Mother is like the traditional Queen. But with the Sage, we see an elder of each suit, representing the wisdom that comes from age and experience. With the Child, we get the young energy of the suit in a playful and relatable manner. With these two new dynamics, the user of Voyager is encouraged to examine and engage with the wise older person and carefree youth within. I find these family cards to be one of the most innovative aspects of Voyager. They make this deck far more approachable than traditional court cards.

The Voyager deck is an excellent starting point for a tarot beginner who does not feel drawn to medieval imagery on traditional decks. It’s also an effective vehicle for the experienced practitioner who wants to broaden and modernize their understanding of the tarot archetypes. The deck has been around since the 1980’s yet feels like a breath of fresh air to this day.

the heart's voyage tarot

The downsides of this deck are likely to be felt most by rigid traditionalists. The meanings of some of the minor arcana are very different and the entire structure of the court cards have changed. Frankly, I have mixed feelings with the use of a single keyword for each card of the minors and family cards. Sometimes they narrow my appreciation of a card a bit too much, but they also provide an effective launching pad for my intuition to work with. It’s a double-edged sword, so to speak. Or perhaps a double-edged crystal?

Since purchasing the Voyager, I’ve gotten to know James Wanless and consider him a great mentor and friend. I’ve attended some of his tarot workshops, earned certification in his Voyager Tarot Coaching program, and had private readings done by him. He’s one of the warmest, most honest and insightful people I’ve ever known. Plus, his deck is awesome.

I highly recommend Voyager Tarot to anyone who is ready for a modern, unique deck. I’m confident that it will stand the test of time and always hold a special place in the ever-evolving tarot tradition.

The Ship Lenormand Card Meaning and Combinations

The Ship Lenormand Meaning Keywords

The ship lenormand card meaning and interpretation.

At the heart of the Ship card is the concept of travel, of journeys and all that one experiences during it. It can very well mean taking a trip of some kind to a far off place, but it can also signify the mental state of travel - the desire to see new places, to explore and to voyage into the unknown. Regardless of whether you are actually, physically making a journey, this card signals heading out on an adventure of some sort - where you are going far from what is familiar.

This card can also imply distance to its surrounding cards, sometimes concerning long-distance relationships, far away family, or an overseas business trip - depending on your question and the other cards in the spread. This definition too, can also be more metaphorical in nature. While you may be in close proximity physically to something, you may not feel close to it.

Finally this card can also signal the choice to move away from something. While journeys can be taken in the search for new, unexplored realms, there are times too when we must undertake a journey in order to leave something else behind.

Astrology and Horoscopes by Eric Francis

An introduction to the Voyager Tarot

By  Sarah Taylor

Of all the tarot decks that I have written about and worked with on these pages, the Voyager Tarot is almost certainly one that stands out as being particularly different in terms of its symbolism.

Woman of Wands -- Voyager Tarot deck.

It shares something with the Mary-El Tarot in that it deviates considerably from more traditional, Golden Dawn-based interpretations of the cards (think Rider-Waite Smith and its variants, on which many tarot decks are based), but the similarity ends there as far as I see it.

Some of you have been introduced to the Voyager Tarot through Eric’s work with the deck, which has formed part of some of the astrology readings that he has released over the years. In fact, Eric’s own work with the Voyager is far more in-depth than mine; I am a relative newcomer to the deck, and have only worked with it occasionally.

To this end, I want to emphasise up-front that this is my own initial take on it, and no-one else’s. And it is only initial: I have a feeling that my work with, and understanding of, the Voyager Tarot will deepen over the ensuing weeks. Which is something I am looking forward to, given that it feels rather like my tarot equivalent of China: somewhere that feels both unfamiliar and which also holds a certain alien attraction.

Voyager Tarot creator James Wanless is a symbologist, and this is immediately apparent in the cards. Assisted by artist Ken Knutson, he has birthed a tarot deck that is constructed with layer upon layer of images. Each card is a ‘cosmic collage’ that can at first seem quite overwhelming in the number and diversity of components in any given card.

However, what I have found consistently is that my eye will be drawn to a particular detail that seems to want to make itself known to me. Once I have investigated that, I will start to make links between it and other elements in the card, and from there, my own story will meet with the story it is presenting to me. It starts to reflect my experience. I begin to see what feels familiar to me; I begin to be aware of what feels like ‘China’ — which I see to be a more sub- or unconscious element of my psyche requesting my attention.

This is no accident. The image on the back of each card is that of a strand of DNA. As James Wanless writes in the LWB (the “little white book” that accompanies the deck):

The structure of DNA is such that any one part is like the whole. The macro reflects the micro. Similarly, each human being is both a part of the universe and a micro-expression of its totality. You must recognize your complexity in order to realize your full potential. Voyager Tarot’s symbolic portrait of the Universe Self is like the universe — and like yourself — full, intricate, interwoven, dynamic, and mysterious. The cross-cultural and multi-level symbolism of the Voyager deck suggests that each card-symbol can manifest itself throughout all aspects of your life, and at any place at any time. It illustrates that many of the 78 symbols may operate simultaneously.

Three of Worlds -- Voyager Tarot deck.

The Voyager is a pictorial depiction of each individual that meets with it, as well as a descriptor of their experience in the outer world. This is not unique to the Voyager — it is the story of tarot as a whole — but the way it accesses this truth and how we experience it is where the Voyager stands out. What Wanless has managed to do is to design something that communicates on a pre-verbal level more than many other tarot decks I have encountered.

The advantage of RWS-based decks is that the language has become like a second tongue to me. The disadvantage is the flip-side to this: this familiar language creates ‘interpretative grooves’ that are all too easy to be directed along at the expense of noticing something new. Four of Cups? Oh — disappointment. Three of Pentacles? Easy — skills acquisition. Don’t get me wrong: this approach to interpretation can be highly effective and insightful. It might not be the whole story though. The Voyager offers us another option in this regard.

In terms of practicalities, the cards are large at 9.5 x 14 cm. This is almost certainly to accommodate the collages at a scale that allows for each component to be seen clearly. I know that some people balk at large decks because of their portability and ‘manoeuvrability’ (although I’m never sure that this is the whole story to their reservations), but this can easily be circumvented by going for the floor swirl rather than a riffle shuffle (and a larger handbag!).

The card stock is substantial, with a semi-gloss coating. I find the light-olive borders attractive and a fine foil for the often dark, often vivid images.

There are two familiar suits in the Cups and the Wands, and two that will be less familiar: Crystals, representing Swords in the more traditional decks, and Worlds representing Pentacles or Disks. The attributes of each suit remain the same, i.e. Wands being creativity/spirit, Cups being emotions, Crystals being thoughts, Worlds being physicality. The Queen has become “Woman”; the King, “Man”; the Knight, “Child”; the Page, “Sage”. Like the Thoth, Balance (Justice) is card VIII, and Strength is card XI.

The Little White Book accompanying the deck is pretty substantial as far as LWBs go, and includes an introduction to the deck and its prevailing themes, an introduction to each arcana, a description of all 78 cards, and reading methods and layouts.

Star -- Voyager Tarot deck.

I am going to refrain from delving into too much more analysis of the deck, save for one last thing, which is a re-emphasis of what I’ve stated earlier: a significant majority of the tarot decks that I have featured and worked with here have been variations on a RWS, and thus the Voyager could feel so new by comparison as to present something of a challenge. Stay with those feelings, but also stay with the deck. It has secrets to unlock — those secrets being ones that reside in each of us.

Approach it with an open mind, and we are approaching it in the same spirit in which the Voyager, and its creator, asks us to engage with it — namely, intuitively. No immediate analysis required, just an ability to let our eyes wander over the images in a process of self-inquiry — something that becomes possible when we surrender a part of ourselves to the uncharted and unexpected.

“THEY lie somewhat…..” sorry, typo!

Thank you so much for the wonderful intro and commentary on the first steps to looking at the Voyager deck. I myself only bought the deck a couple of months ago, but I’ve been pulling a card a day from the Voyager website to familiarize myself with the cards and in how they manifest for me. I love this deck so much, really, have fallen in love with it.

The only small thing I wanted to perhaps share as an addendum here, is that the traditional Knight seems to have actually disappeared. I feel the Child is the Page, and the Sage is a new family/court card where we associate its role with that of an elder, shaman, or grandparent who surpasses the expertise of the Man/Woman and transcends it into pure integration and effortless wisdom. The lie somewhat on the fringes, connecting us to the universe in a deep level of being.

Looking forward to more of your insights on this deck Sarah! 🙂

Understand [ edit ]

Moscow Oblast is the economic and political heart of Russia and is by far its most populous oblast—excluding the city of Moscow itself, the region has approximately seven million residents. Destinations in the region are easily accessible by day trips from Moscow and have an extraordinary amount of sightseeing for the interested traveller.

On 1 July 2012, a significant chunk of the Moscow region, including the towns of Troitsk and Moskovsky , Kievskyi settlement and stretching out all the way to Kaluga region was re-designated as part of Moscow itself. While this has not affected the character of the territory immediately, they will inevitably be integrated more and more into the city, thus making this area a unique tourist destination to see still (almost) rural places right before they urbanize.

Moscow Oblast is in the UTC+3 time zone.

Talk [ edit ]

Within Moscow Oblast , more English and other European languages are spoken than in most of Russia, but travelers should still consider familiarizing themselves with some key Russian phrases.

Moscow Oblast lacks any signs using the Roman (as opposed to Cyrillic) alphabet, except the signs on some major highways. Even there, expect to find differing titles of the same place. For instance, while driving you can see signs displaying "Moscow", "Moskow" and "Moskva" within a short distance.

Get in [ edit ]

the heart's voyage tarot

In most cases travelling to the Moscow Oblast is done via the transport hub of the city of Moscow .

By plane [ edit ]

The airports of Moscow with international flights are located either inside Moscow Oblast or in the outer parts of Moscow proper and have direct bus or commuter train ( elektrichka ) connections with the cities of Podmoskovie , as following:

  • From 55.408611 37.906111 1 Domodedovo airport - elektrichka to Moscow goes through the cities of Domodedovo and Vidnoe (Aeroexpress trains proceed directly to Moscow without any stops).
  • From 55.972778 37.414722 2 Sheremetyevo airport - bus 21 or 48 to the town of Lobnya , bus 38 to the city of Dolgoprudny , bus 41 or 43 to the city of Khimki .

If you want to get to any other part of Podmoskovie from the airports - hire a taxi or proceed through Moscow .

By train [ edit ]

There are three kinds of local commuter trains operating from Moscow to Moscow Oblast and neighbouring regions:

  • Elektrichka (ordinary trains). Be aware of 2 hours break after morning rush hour on weekdays for all local trains except bound to Pushkino from Yaroslavskiy train station.
  • Express trains (several a day in all major directions from Moscow to the further lying cities in the region ( Mozhaysk , Zvenigorod , Istra , Volokolamsk , Klin , Dmitrov , Dubna , Sergiev Posad , Monino , Noginsk , Orehovo-Zuevo , Kurovskoe , Kolomna , Kashira , Chekhov , Serpukhov and Naro-Fominsk to name major of them) and sometimes neighboring cities outside the region. Expresses run only during rush hours, typically 1 to each destination each morning and evening.)
  • Sputnik trains - as fast and comfortable as express ones but connecting Moscow with its largest satellite suburbs: Mytischi , Korolyov , Pushkino , Zheleznodorozhny , Lubertsy , Ramenskoe . Those usually run each hour or two, with possible breaks off-rush hour

Both express and sputnik trains are further divided by brands. The major brands are following:

  • Original Sputnik trains. Those were first expresses in Moscow Oblast and hence have given colloquial name to all short-ranged expresses. Typically but not always served by 6- or 8-wagon trains of yellowish color with 6 doors each.
  • Aeroexpresses serve airports and typically don't stop in Moscow Oblast. They are also more expensive.
  • Various named expresses serving long-range destinations like Fedor Chizhov to Alexandrov . Some expresses may continue quite further beyond Podmoskovie (to Tver and Yaroslavl for example) and still serve cities of Moscow Oblast.
  • "Expresses REX" are one of more common types of the above, with typical blue coloring and picture of a dog. They serve both short-range and long-range destinations.
  • Latest appearing brand are "Lastochkas", using red-colored trains, produced by Siemens AG. They now serve Khimki , Solnechnogorsk , Mozhaysk, Orehovo-Zuevo, Klin and Serpukhov, with trains bound to Zelenograd , Tver , Nizhny Novgorod , Smolensk , Oryol and Kursk .

Multiple types of expresses may be confusing, especially as brand, serving particular destination, may change with time. While not typical, train, using specific brand coloring, may serve destination of other brand, or - for older types - even run as a simple elektrichka . You may need to check particular type of train using timetables or asking locals in such situations.

When you're trying to buy a ticket, both from ticket office and from vending machine, you usually should know exactly, which kind of express you're boarding, especially with Lastochkas. Ask for help or opt for ticket office when unsure. Pricing and discounts are different for different types of expresses.

Although your destination will be within Moscow Oblast, if the express is bound outside Moscow Oblast, you will need to provide your passport to buy a ticket (this rule is enforced in Russia everywhere). Tickets for expresses bound outside Moscow Oblast are also unavailable from vending machines for local trains (which do not require your passport).

Long-distance trains in most cases have no stops in Podmoskovie . The only large stop for long-distance trains in the region is Ozherelye for south-bound trains from Moscow and Saint-Petersburg . Volokolamsk and Mozhaisk may have 1 or 2 trains in each direction daily.

Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
