Your car’s dashboard contains many gauges and measurements, but the odometer reading might be the most important. This random set of numbers means more than you might be aware of.

In this guide, I show you how to read the odometer. I also explain what it means to roll back the odometer, and how you can avoid becoming a victim of this practice. 

How Does the Odometer Work?

The odometer is a measurement device that shows the total distance traveled by the car. It’s found on the car’s dashboard. Two Greek words come together to form the word “odometer,” leaving us with the meaning of path and measure.

There is also a trip odometer on most cars. Unlike the standard odometer, the trip odometer is easy to reset to show how many miles were traveled during a specific time. It’s a helpful tool if you want to figure out the approximate gas mileage of your vehicle. 

How to Check the Odometer Reading

Whether you have a mechanical or electronic odometer, you can read the numbers that are shown on your car’s dashboard. These numbers show how many total miles the vehicle has been driven. However, there are some ways these numbers can be messed with, giving you a false impression. 

Here is more detailed information on how to check your car’s odometer, depending on whether you have a mechanical or electronic odometer:

1. Mechanical Odometer

Mechanical odometers are constructed with a few cogs. Each one represents a numerical digit. The functionality of this kind of odometer begins at the car’s transmission. There is a small gear used to change the odometer which is found attached to the transmission. 

The drive cable for the speedometer is connected to this gear, with the other end reaching the instrument cluster. As the car moves, the transmission gear also turns in conjunction. The drive cable connected to it changes the digits on the odometer. 

As can be seen by the illustration above, the counting begins on the right. This particular odometer shows 160,648 km. All of these numbers will reach a peak value before resetting to zero and starting again. However, the mechanical odometer numbers can often be slightly off-center, making them more difficult to read. 

2. Electronic Odometer

The electronic odometer design is newer than the mechanical type. It’s a digital odometer that is run by the electrical system. While there is still a special gear measuring the mileage, there isn’t a drive cable. Instead, a magnetic sensor is used to count how often the gear turns with the transmission. The mileage is then shown by the numbers reflected on the dashboard electronically.

Electronic odometers are more accurate than mechanical ones, and they aren’t as easy to alter. If you look at the illustration above, it shows the mileage of the vehicle at 100000 km, revealed electronically.

Why is the Odometer Reading Important?

The numbers you read on the odometer show you how many miles the vehicle has traveled. When you look at the odometer, you know how many miles are on that vehicle’s engine, transmission and other vital parts.

This measurement is important to know before you purchase a vehicle, since the mileage determines a large part of the car’s value. Vehicles are often priced according to the model year, condition and mileage. The lower the mileage, the higher the resale value typically is.

How to Calculate Fuel Economy with the Odometer

You can use the odometer to figure out the approximate fuel economy of your vehicle. Knowing what the car should be getting, you can determine if the engine is working as it should.

• When you fill-up the gas tank, reset the trip odometer.
• Drive normally until the next time you fill-up.
• At that filling session, write down the number of gallons you added and take note of the trip mileage since the last fill-up. This shows how many miles you drove for that many gallons of gas.
• You can divide the number of miles driven by the number of gallons you put in the tank. For example, if you drove 200 miles on 10 gallons of fuel, the average fuel economy was 20 mpg. 

To get the most accurate reading, try to record the mileage for an entire tank of fuel. You can also perform the test several times to see a better average.

Can the Odometer Be Wrong?

It’s possible for the odometer to show the wrong measurement. If you have a mechanical odometer, you want to watch it periodically to ensure it is recording the mileage correctly. If you measure the distance you’ve driven, the odometer should accurately report it. 

If the odometer isn’t working correctly – even a little – the mismeasurement can quickly add up. Let’s assume that the odometer changes too soon – again, even by a little. It won’t take long before the car is showing far more miles than what has actually been driven, leading it to lose resale value unnecessarily. 

It’s possible to have the fault repaired and get back on track. If you plan to sell your car in the future, this is something you want to take care of right away.

What Does it Mean to Roll Back an Odometer?

Dishonest people aren’t afraid to roll back the odometer to make a car look like it has fewer miles than it actually has. It is much easier to roll back a mechanical odometer. While there are some hoops to jump through to get around the security system, criminals know how to make it happen with minimal effort.

How to Tell if Odometer Has Been Rolled Back

Before you purchase a vehicle, you want to be sure that the odometer is accurate. The best way to do this is to run a CARFAX report on the vehicle . With this vehicle history report, you can see how many owners the car had and see the service records. With all of the reported mileage and dates, you will know very quickly if the odometer has been turned back at some point.

For example, if the CARFAX shows that in 2019 the car had 156,000 miles on it, you would know something is wrong if you are looking at it in 2022 with only 125,000 miles on the odometer. This simple step indicates that the odometer has been messed with, and you should avoid the car at all costs. 

You can also physically look at the mechanical odometer to see if anything appears shady. If you see scratches around the numbers or other imperfections, this should serve as a red flag to you. 

Finally, listen to your gut. If the car dealer gives you a bad feeling or doesn’t seem to care about regulations, it’s best to choose somewhere else to do business. If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

An odometer has 6 digits with a 1/10 th digit. The number reading displays how many miles the car has driven since it was released from the factory. There is also a trip odometer that counts how many miles you’ve driven since your last “trip.”

In this guide, I’ll explain how to read an odometer in greater detail and what trip odometers are (and how to use them).

What is an Odometer?

An odometer is a device that measures the distance traveled by a vehicle. It’s typically found in cars, trucks, motorcycles, and other road vehicles and displays the distance in miles or kilometers. The odometer is usually located on the dashboard near the speedometer and is designed to provide an accurate record of the total distance traveled by the vehicle.

The odometer works by using gears and a set of mechanical or electronic components to calculate the number of rotations made by the wheels of the vehicle. The odometer is connected to the drivetrain of the vehicle, which allows it to measure the distance traveled accurately. The odometer readings are used for various purposes, including tracking maintenance needs, determining the value of a vehicle, and monitoring fuel efficiency.

Types of Odometers

Your car will come with either a mechanical odometer or a digital/electric odometer.

1. Mechanic odometer

This is the traditional type of odometer that uses gears and a set of mechanical components to calculate the distance traveled by a vehicle. It’s a simple and straightforward device that has been in use for many decades.

Mechanical odometers are typically less expensive than digital odometers and are known for their durability and reliability. However, they are not as accurate as digital odometers and can be prone to wear and tear over time.

2. Digital/Electric odometer

This is the modern type of odometer that uses electronic components to display the distance traveled by a vehicle. It’s typically found in newer vehicles and is designed to provide an accurate and reliable record of the distance traveled.

Digital odometers are easy to read and can display the readings in miles or kilometers, making it easy to interpret the data. They also often offer additional features, such as a trip odometer and odometer correction, which allow for more detailed monitoring of the vehicle’s performance. However, digital odometers are more expensive than mechanical odometers and are susceptible to technical issues such as software errors.

How to Read an Odometer

Reading an odometer means seeing the total miles driven in a car. You’ll want to know how many miles the car has driven to guesstimate its engine’s condition. Normally, an odometer with a higher mile figure denotes an engine that has seen better days. The lower the odometer’s reading, the “newer” and less worn-out it is.

The odometer’s display can be found on your car’s dash. If it’s mechanical, it will consist of 7 boxes, with the final box (representing 1/10th of a mile) being a different color. The first six boxes show the total miles driven (up to 999,999 miles). For instance, if the boxes are filled with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, that means the car has driven for around 123,456.7 miles.

If you notice that one of the digits on the odometer is between 2 numbers, that means that the digit is on the verge of increasing—in other words, the previous digit is about to go up from 9 to 0.

Please note that the odometer’s readings may also be expressed in kilometers, depending on where you live. In this case, the example above means that the car has driven for around 123,456.7 kilometers since it was released from the factory.

On the other hand, if your car is fitted with a digital or electric odometer, the numbers will be displayed in digital format.

What Is a Trip Odometer?

If you have a mechanical odometer, take a close look at it. You’ll most likely find a narrow secondary readout somewhere beneath the 7-digit main display. That is known as the trip odometer.

The trip odometer is usually reset to zero after each use and can be reset manually by the driver. This information can be useful for tracking fuel efficiency, monitoring maintenance needs, and recording distances for reimbursement or tax purposes .

In some cars, the trip odometer is a part of the primary odometer, while in others, it has its own display that is located somewhere underneath the main odometer display. The trip odometer is a useful tool for tracking the distance traveled for specific trips, and it can be a valuable addition to the overall monitoring and performance of your vehicle.

How to Use the Trip Odometer

Unlike the main odometer, the trip odometer can be reset to 0. This allows you to record the traveled distances of short trips—for example, if you’d like to record how many miles you drive from home to work, from work to school, how many miles you drive between gas refills, etc.

The trip odometer will likely have a button that you can press. This allows you to scroll from trip A to trip B, so you can record the distances of 2 journeys. In mechanical odometers, pressing it will clear the readout, rolling it back to its 0 state.

For digital odometers, pressing the odometer button once will let you scroll between trip A, trip B, and the main readout. You can clear the trip readouts by pressing and holding the button for 3 to 5 seconds.

Can You Roll Back an Odometer?

If you mean the main odometer—i.e., the one that’s supposed to read the total miles driven since the car was made—the unfortunate answer is, yes, you can. I won’t teach you how to do it here since it’s unethical.

Rolling the odometer back, also known as odometer fraud or tampering, refers to the act of altering the readings on an odometer to make a vehicle appear to have traveled fewer miles than it actually has. This unethical practice is often done to increase the resale value of a vehicle or to conceal its true condition.

Rolling the odometer back is illegal in many countries, as it misleads potential buyers and constitutes fraud. In addition, it can also be dangerous, as it conceals important information about the vehicle’s maintenance history and wears and tear. When a vehicle has more miles on it than indicated on the odometer, it may have worn-out parts or other hidden problems that could affect its performance and safety.

However, rolling back the trip odometer is completely fine and can be done straight from the dashboard (check the previous section to learn how).

How do I use the trip computer in my Ford?

The trip computer in your vehicle keeps track of the time and distance you have traveled. The trip computer has several menu options that you can access by using the five-way controls on your steering wheel. Press down, up, left, or OK to scroll through the options, which include: 

• Distance to Empty:  Indicates the approximate distance your vehicle can travel before running out of fuel. 
• Trip Odometer:  Registers the distance you have traveled on an individual trip.
• Trip Timer:  Keeps track of how long each trip takes. The timer stops when you turn your vehicle off and restarts when you restart your vehicle.
• Average Fuel:  Shows the average fuel economy for a given trip.
• Outside Temperature:  Shows the outside air temperature.
• Digital Odometer:  Tracks the overall distance you have traveled.
• All Values:  Shows the Distance to Empty, Trip Odometer, Trip Timer, and Average Fuel. 

Setting the Trip Odometer to Track an Individual Trip

• Scroll to either the Trip Odometer , Trip Timer , or Average Fuel screen using the five-way steering wheel controls.
• Press and hold the OK button until you see the status bar loading. When the status bar fills in all the way, your computer will be reset.

Resetting All Trip Computers

• Scroll to the All Values screen using the five-way steering wheel controls.
• Press and hold OK until you see that the computer is reset to zero.

Changing the Display Information

• Go to Settings from the main menu.
• Select Display . Choose one of the following options:
• Measure Unit or Distance depending on your vehicle
• Temperature

Mechanical odometers have been counting the miles for centuries. Although they are a dying breed, they are incredibly cool because they are so simple! A mechanical odometer is nothing more than a gear train with an incredible gear ratio.

­The odometer we took apart for this article (pictured above) has a 1690:1 gear reduction ! That means the input shaft of this odometer has to spin 1,690 times before the odometer will register 1 mile.

Odometers like this are being replaced by digital odometers that provide more features and cost less, but they aren't nearly as cool. In this article, we'll take a look inside a mechanical odometer, and then we'll talk about how digital odometers work.

Mechanical Odometers

Computerized odometers.

Mechanical odometers are turned by a flexible cable made from a tightly wound spring. The cable usually spins inside a protective metal tube with a rubber housing. On a bicycle , a little wheel rolling against the bike wheel turns the cable, and the gear ratio on the odometer has to be calibrated to the size of this small wheel. On a car , a gear engages the output shaft of the transmission , turning the cable.

The cable snakes its way up to the instrument panel, where it is connected to the input shaft of the odometer.

The Gearing

This odometer uses a series of three worm gears to achieve its 1690:1 gear reduction . The input shaft drives the first worm, which drives a gear. Each full revolution of the worm only turns the gear one tooth. That gear turns another worm, which turns another gear, which turns the last worm and finally the last gear, which is hooked up to the tenth-of-a-mile indicator.

Each indicator has a row of pegs sticking out of one side, and a single set of two pegs on the other side. When the set of two pegs comes around to the white plastic gears, one of the teeth falls in between the pegs and turns with the indicator until the pegs pass. This gear also engages one of the pegs on the next bigger indicator, turning it a tenth of a revolution.

You can now see why, when your odometer "rolls over" a large number of digits (say from 19,999 to 20,000 miles), the "2" at the far left side of the display may not line up perfectly with the rest of the digits. A tiny amount of gear lash in the white helper gears prevents perfect alignment of all the digits. Usually, the display will have to get to 21,000 miles before the digits line up well again.

You can also see that mechanical odometers like this one are rewindable . When you run the car in reverse, the odometer actually can go backwards -- it's just a gear train. In the movie " Ferris Bueller's Day Off ," in the scene where they have the car up on blocks with the wheels spinning in reverse -- that should've worked! In real life, the odometer would've turned back. Another trick is to hook the odometer's cable up to a drill and run it backwards to rewind the miles.

While that does work on older mechanical odometers, it does not work on the new electronic ones, as we will see in the next section...

If you make a trip to the bike shop, you most likely won't find any cable-driven odometers or speedometers. Instead, you will find bicycle computers. Bicycles with computers like these have a magnet attached to one of the wheels and a pickup attached to the frame. Once per revolution of the wheel, the magnet passes by the pickup, generating a voltage in the pickup. The computer counts these voltage spikes, or pulses, and uses them to calculate the distance traveled.

If you have ever installed one of these bike computers, you know that you have to program them with the circumference of the wheel. The circumference is the distance traveled when the wheel makes one full revolution. Each time the computer senses a pulse, it adds another wheel circumference to the total distance and updates the digital display.

Many modern cars use a system like this, too. Instead of a magnetic pickup on a wheel, they use a toothed wheel mounted to the output of the transmission and a magnetic sensor that counts the pulses as each tooth of the wheel goes by. Some cars use a slotted wheel and an optical pickup, like a computer mouse does. Just like on the bicycle, the computer in the car knows how much distance the car travels with each pulse, and uses this to update the odometer reading.

One of the most interesting things about car odometers is how the information is transmitted to the dashboard. Instead of a spinning cable transmitting the distance signal, the distance (along with a lot of other data) is transmitted over a single wire communications bus from the engine control unit (ECU) to the dashboard. The car is like a local area network with many different devices connected to it. Here are some of the devices that may be connected to the computer network in a car:

• Engine control unit (ECU)
• Climate control system
• Power window controls
• Anti-lock braking system
• Air bag control module
• Body control module (operates the interior lights, etc.)
• Transmission control module

Many vehicles use a standardized communication protocol, called SAE J1850, to enable all of the different electronics modules to communicate with each other.

The engine control unit counts all of the pulses and keeps track of the overall distance traveled by the car. This means that if someone tries to " roll back " the odometer, the value stored in the ECU will disagree. This value can be read using a diagnostic computer, which all car-dealership service departments have.

Several times per second, the ECU sends out a packet of information consisting of a header and the data. The header is just a number that identifies the packet as a distance reading, and the data is a number corresponding to the distance traveled. The instrument panel contains another computer that knows to look for this particular packet, and whenever it sees one it updates the odometer with the new value. In cars with digital odometers, the dashboard simply displays the new value. Cars with analog odometers have a small stepper motor that turns the dials on the odometer.

Displays the average fuel consumption since the function was last reset.

• To reset the function, press and hold the button while average fuel consumption is being displayed.

The average fuel consumption meter will also be reset, returning the needle to the 0 position.

How do I use the trip computer in my Ford?

The trip computer in your vehicle keeps track of the time and distance you have traveled. The trip computer has several menu options that you can access by using the five-way controls on your steering wheel. Press down, up, left, or OK to scroll through the options, which include: 

• Distance to Empty: Indicates the approximate distance your vehicle can travel before running out of fuel. 
• Trip Odometer: Registers the distance you have traveled on an individual trip.
• Trip Timer: Keeps track of how long each trip takes. The timer stops when you turn your vehicle off and restarts when you restart your vehicle.
• Average Fuel: Shows the average fuel economy for a given trip.
• Outside Temperature: Shows the outside air temperature.
• Digital Odometer: Tracks the overall distance you have traveled.
• All Values: Shows the Distance to Empty, Trip Odometer, Trip Timer, and Average Fuel. 

Using Your Trip Computer

Setting your trip odometer to track an individual trip.

• Scroll to either the Trip Odometer, Trip Timer, or Average Fuel screen using the five-way steering wheel controls.
• Press and hold the OK button until you see the status bar loading. When the status bar fills in all the way, your computer will be reset.

Resetting All Trip Computers

• Scroll to the All Values screen using the five-way steering wheel controls.
• Press and hold OK until you see that the computer is reset to zero.

Changing the Display Information

• Go to Settings from the main menu.
• Measure Unit or Distance depending on your vehicle
• Temperature

What does “odometer rolled over” mean?

“Odometer rolled over” refers to the odometer reaching its maximum reading and starting over from zero, common in older vehicles. This means the odometer starts counting from zero, so it is necessary to add past mileage to know all past mileage.

Can you change a car’s mileage?

It is possible to change car mileage, but doing so is illegal and unethical unless correcting a known error.

Calculate your Past Odometer Readings

If the IRS audits you for mileage or any other reason, you’ll have to know your past odometer readings.

To create a retrospective mileage log , use the odometer reading calculator to calculate how much the odometer reading could be at certain refuelings/chargings and at the end of the month.

Before you get started, you’ll need some information:

• The starting odometer reading of your vehicle,
• The current odometer reading of your vehicle,
• Approximate fuel consumption of your vehicle,
• The date of your refuelings/chargings,
• Amount of fuel refueled per refueling/charging.

Without this information, you will not be able to calculate accurate odometer readings at certain refuelings/chargings. Without accurate odometer readings, your mileage logs will be inaccurate, so we recommend that you take the time to gather the data as soon as possible.

TIP: You can find information about the odometer readings recorded during a service visit or vehicle inspection by checking your vehicle’s history if you know its VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). Check your VIN for more info.

Can I switch from actual to standard mileage?

If you opt for the standard mileage rate during the first year a vehicle is in use, you have the option to alternate between using the standard mileage and actual expenses methods each year. • Check the arrangement: To calculate your distance, count the odometer digits. Some versions also show a tenth of a distance unit. This normally appears in a different-colored wheel.
• Read the displayed number from left to right.
• Add the current number to the rollover: Old odometers roll back to zero after a certain limit, reducing their accuracy. Note and add these readings to gain a better idea of the vehicle’s trip distance.

Secretary Blinken talked economy, security and AI during trip to China

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with China's leader Xi Jinping. Washington and Beijing are engaging in talks over issues of economic development, global security, AI and more.

ARI SHAPIRO, HOST:

Today U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with China's leader Xi Jinping. The meeting wraps up a three-day visit to China as Washington and Beijing held talks on economic development, AI and more. Our colleague, Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep, was also in Beijing, and he spoke to Blinken about what he's gleaned from meetings with China's top leaders on global security.

STEVE INSKEEP, BYLINE: One thing you were focused on was trying to get China to stop giving aid to Russia's military as it invades Ukraine. And we can talk about China's attitude here because they've made a public statement. Their foreign ministry spokesman was asked today about ending aid to Russia, and he said, look. We trade with Russia, and you guys aid Ukraine. You're hypocrites. That sounded like a, no, we're not stopping - seemed to be what they were saying.

ANTONY BLINKEN: What China is doing now - it's not providing weapons to Russia for use in Ukraine as...

INSKEEP: Right.

BLINKEN: ...For example, North Korea and Iran are. But it is the No. 1 supplier of the critical components for Russia to rebuild its defense industrial base and other things that are going right into a massive production of munitions, of weaponry, of tanks, of armored vehicles, which in turn are going into Ukraine. This is not only a problem for us. It's not only a problem for Ukraine. It's a problem for virtually everyone in Europe because they see this as helping to perpetuate the Russian aggression in Ukraine. They also see it as creating a growing threat to Europe's security. So one of the things that I shared with our Chinese colleagues is that at the very same time that they're trying to develop better relations with Europe, they can't be doing that while at the same time helping to fuel what is the biggest threat to Europe's security since the end of the Cold War. Now, we've already taken steps ourselves. We're prepared to do more if China is not prepared to act to curb this activity.

INSKEEP: So Elbridge Colby, who's a former Republican defense official - you're nodding; you know him - was on the program this week and said he is concerned that these U.S. efforts could provoke a war that the United States is not ready for. What is the risk here?

BLINKEN: We're all about preventing wars, preventing conflict. And, again, one of the things that was so important in trying to reestablish regular contact with the China, regular engagement was the restoration of our military-to-military communications, something that came out of the president's meeting with President Xi last year. And we've seen...

INSKEEP: That prevents an accidental war.

BLINKEN: That's right.

INSKEEP: But what if China decides they must act 'cause they're running out of time?

BLINKEN: Well, I'm not going to get into their own decision space, but we've been very clear that when it comes to the South China Sea, when it comes to the Taiwan Strait, our purpose, our focus is on maintaining peace and stability, maintaining the status quo and not seeing any actions taken that could disrupt it.

INSKEEP: So while we're here in Beijing, we've been talking with a lot of people, and we met a university professor who said America's reputation has declined here, in part because of U.S. support for Israel and its war against Hamas. And it's been widely reported that China is playing up this conflict in the Global South, in many nations, to undermine the United States. How can you respond to that?

BLINKEN: Look. I can't, you know, focus on what they may be saying or doing inside of China. But what I can focus on is two things. One, of course, is what what we're doing in the Middle East, both to try to bring this conflict to an end as quickly as possible in a way that allows Israel to ensure that October 7 never happens again but also to do everything we can to protect the men, women and children who are caught in this crossfire of Hamas' making. And I've had, I think, six conversations with my Chinese counterparts since October 7. I actually believe that China could play a constructive role. It has influence with critical countries in the region, including, for example, Iran. So what I'm focused on is trying to encourage China to use that influence in a productive way.

How close did German troops come to Moscow during World War II?

German units just ahead of Moscow.

In the Fall and Winter of 1941, Soviet troops stopped the Wehrmacht on the outskirts of the Soviet capital at the cost of tremendous efforts and huge sacrifices. The Nazis managed to come closest to the city only from the north-western direction.

On November 30, units of the 2nd Panzer Division of Lieutenant General Rudolf Fayel occupied the village of Krasnaya Polyana (today – a microdistrict of the town of Lobnya, Moscow Region). The distance to the administrative border of Moscow from there in a straight line was about 17 kilometers and to the Kremlin – a little more than 30.

The settlement was located on a hill and the Germans planned to place long-range artillery there to bombard the center of the Soviet capital. They had no doubt that the Red Army was on the brink of disaster and were preparing for a decisive assault.

"We stand near Moscow as victors and before our mental gaze in a blood-red glow arise burning city blocks, countless domes of cathedrals and the walls of the Kremlin! I wish it would come true sooner!" This was what, according to the memoirs of Colonel Luitpold Steidle, many German soldiers thought in those days. 

However, such dreams were not destined to come true. On December 5, completely unexpected for the Nazis, Soviet troops launched a major counter-offensive and, three days later, liberated Krasnaya Polyana.

Russia is not very tourist-friendly (for non-Russian speakers - possibly russian speakers too) - so i thought i'd share a few tips with future travellers

1. Gett and Uber generally work quite well (except certain hours like 6-9pm) and are quite affordable. given the scale of the city, worthwhile to give these a try

2. My wife and I have been quite cautious but we have felt safe throughout our time here in Russia so far (a week)

3. Don’t exchange money at the airport – rate is horrendous – there are many exchange shops (don’t need to go to a bank) with competitive rates and no commission, eg Tverskaya street (main street leading to red square) near Sheraton.

5. Must see the GUM and take a look inside. St Basil's Cathedral – skip if short of time. We booked Armoury tickets online in advance and think this is a good idea. Managed to get tickets for Cathedral square and diamond fund on the day. Getting Armoury and diamond fund tickets for the same time slot is no problem (in fact, probably best)

6. Get your gifts and souvenirs at Izmaylovo – can’t beat the price-quality ratio and variety anywhere else in Russia pretty much I think

7. Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer: men cannot enter in shorts. There’s a shop that women can rent cloths for their head and shorts – but men are not allowed to rent (how bizarre). Bring your own? Get the seafood spaghetti in the Italian restaurant outside – it’s v good

8. Kostroma ballet show worth a try. Some dances are incredible. River Cruise is worthwhile (we were happy with Radisson cruise , but go early to get an outdoor seat)

9. Book your train tickets in advance online. Buying one at the station is a horror show. Took us an hour… lucky we arrived early. And no body speaks any English – very confusing. Much better to buy online and print in english

Great stuff, but do be aware that many of us have spent a lot of time educating folks that the easiest and almost always "honest" rate to be had for exchange is via ATMs, which are all over the place. They use a "globally" set exchange rate that pretty much agrees with the rate set by the Central Bank of Russia...now, at times, rates may change a bit during the day...up or down...and I guess if you want to spend your precious vacation time trying to say what likely will be a couple of bucks, then sure, go ahead and hit one of the "convenient" non-bank exchange places...

thanks Ebertsj for all your priceless advice over the years. I did not try ATMs so cannot comment or compare with the exchange shops - just want to say i thought the rates at exchange shops seem pretty decent (whereas at ATMs i think you don't know the rates immediately?)

Atm's will always give best rate abroad. Only other good thing is if you have a credit card specifically for travel, but then that's credit and not cash in hand.

Glitter: The Popstar Paedophile review – a most sickening nostalgia trip

This relentless documentary takes us back in time to meet the women abused by glam-rock star Gary Glitter as children … and the roadies who tried to stop him (and set his wig on fire) 25 years before he finally got caught

D o you remember – it feels so long ago now – the days when it was a shock to find out that a rich, famous, charismatic man had been using his riches, fame and charisma to rape and abuse women and children and cover it up for years and years?

Glitter: The Popstar Paedophile is the bleakest of nostalgia trips, taking us back to those quaint times, before the public Jimmy Savile revelations, before the R Kelly revelations, before the Rolf Harris revelations, before Harvey Weinstein, Jeffrey Epstein … I could, unfortunately, go on but I think the point is made.

This 90-minute film tells the story with whose main beats we are now grotesquely familiar. We see the fame, this time via plenty of Top of the Pops footage of the glam-rock star Gary Glitter – real name, the name under which he would eventually be prosecuted, Paul Gadd – the high-energy interviews on the likes of Saturday Scene with Sally James, the more stately stuff with Terry Wogan and other chatshow presenters, and even an episode of This Is Your Life that was devoted to him. And, as with most of the documentaries about British celebrity paedophiles and/or abusers, there is a stomach-churning interview with Savile himself from what looks like the late 1980s, by which time they were both well practised in their depravities and giving new meaning to the phrase “hiding in plain sight”. See also Glitter’s 1980 hit What Your Mama Don’t See (Your Mama Don’t Know) replete with lines like “You insist you’re not to be kissed / ’Cause your mama’s not far away … One more glance, I might take a chance / I’m a desperate kind of man.”

We hear, mainly via the prosecuting counsels, from and about the women who would eventually see him convicted of various sex offences. Woman A suffered an attempted rape by 31-year-old Glitter/Gadd in 1975 when she was eight years old. Two other girls, around the age of 12, were raped by him after concerts, their mamas ushered elsewhere by members of the star’s entourage. There is an incident recounted by music journalist Garry Johnson about two men who were hired to work security for a Glitter gig around 1990 who discovered in one of the boxes they were carrying from his van huge numbers of Polaroid photos of children. They confronted him. He cried and offered them money. They refused it and walked off the job, setting fire to his wig on the way. The bathos of the last act should not obscure the fact that this seems to have been the closest his victims got to justice for the next 25 years.

The film assembles its evidence meticulously, relentlessly and unsensationally, including not just the facts that would end up in court but moments that tell us almost more than the lawyers can. There is the fleeting look of absolute terror in Glitter’s eyes when Paula Yates interviews him on the infamous On the Bed segment of The Big Breakfast and asks of his girlfriends: “Are they very young?” Glitter’s relief when she appears to mean women in their early 20s is palpable.

Despite a 1993 story in the News of the World about him having sex with a 14-year-old (attention focused on the photo she had of him without his wig, completely bald) and the rumours that had been swirling for years, it wasn’t until child sexual abuse images were found on a laptop he took in for repair in 1997 that any charges were filed against him. Woman A added her complaint to the charge sheet but the judge reckoned too much time had passed and dropped her case. Woman B, from the News of the World story, was destroyed on cross-examination, and by the judge’s recommendation that the jury should bear in mind that there are 14-year-olds “who look like girls” and 14-year-olds who “look like sophisticated ladies” and consider which category woman B fell into. Gadd was cleared of offences against her, but the public gallery reeled in shock when he pleaded guilty to all the child abuse image charges.

The film slightly rushes the years he then spent in south-east Asia, free to exploit vulnerable children in poorer countries, and the legal systems that effectively function as an international ring of enablers for paedophiles and other abusers. But it does its job in reilluminating the horrors of the past, which are also the horrors of the present and no doubt the horrors of the future too. We have a little more knowledge, a little more awareness, a little more wisdom. Perhaps we are a little more protective. But, as Glitter et al’s long freedom (and usually nugatory sentences if ever caught) show, these terrible, terrible predators are ever in our midst, and we are no closer to ridding ourselves of them.

What to Know About Venice’s Fees for Day Trips

Venice is trying to mitigate overtourism with a small fee on busy days. City leaders hope it will make visitors more aware of the city’s fragility.

After years of debate , Venice on Thursday began charging day visitors five euros to visit its fragile historic center on peak days, making it the first city in the world to adopt such a measure to counter overtourism.

Critics question whether a nominal fee will put people off from visiting one of the world’s most desired destinations. But officials hope that it might encourage some to rethink their plans and decide to come on weekdays or in the off-season.

That might help mitigate the impact of the estimated 20 million visitors who descended last year on the city’s beleaguered residents, who number fewer than 50,000, according to municipal statistics . About half of those visitors came only for the day, city officials said. Overnight guests are exempt from the fee.

The spirit of the initiative, city officials have said, is to make people aware of the uniqueness — and fragility — of Venice. Overtourism is creating an economy solely based on tourism that risks killing the city by pushing its dwindling residents out, said Nicola Camatti, an economics professor and expert in tourism at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.

When will Venice start charging?

The fee went into effect on Thursday, a holiday in Italy. For 2024, city officials have singled out 29 peak days when single-day travelers in Venice between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. have to pay. The days run until mid-July and are mostly on national holidays and weekends. The access-fee website provides a list of the dates.

Who must pay?

While just about everyone visiting the city has to register to obtain a QR code, not all visitors have to pay the fee. Overnight guests at registered accommodations like hotels or Airbnbs are exempt, because they already pay a daily tourist tax, as are people who study or work in Venice and those visiting relatives. There are other exemptions as well.

Residents of Venice, those born there and minors under 14 are among those who do not have to register. But they must have documents that prove their status.

It is possible that different fees will apply next year on a sliding scale that will depend on how many people city officials expect on any one day. City officials said the fees could be as high as 10 euros per day.

How will the system work?

Before coming to Venice on peak days, visitors should use the website to register and get a QR code.

The code will be scanned at points where visitors enter, like the train station, the city parking lot, the airport and the sprawling waterfront along the San Marco basin where boats dock. The access points will have one line for tourists and another for residents and what officials call city users, who are coming into Venice for reasons other than sightseeing.

At least for now, those who do not register ahead of time can do so at some access points or on their cellphones, officials said. Assistants will be available.

Initially, the controls will be “very soft,” said Michele Zuin, the municipal councilor responsible for the city’s budget.

Speaking to reporters at the foreign press association in Rome this month, Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said the fee was not about cashing in on tourists. “The costs of the operation are higher than what we’re going to make,” he said.

Why is Venice doing this?

City officials hope to relieve some of the stress that tourists put on the city by encouraging them to come on less busy days. They also say that by knowing ahead of time how many visitors to expect, the city can better deploy services.

“We want to better manage the numbers of tourists and disincentivize mass tourism” that makes it difficult for residents and visitors to “live in this city,” Mr. Zuin said this month.

To track the flow of visitors, the city already monitors them via phone location data and surveillance cameras, a system some critics have likened to Big Brother .

Venice has also fallen under the scrutiny of the United Nations’ culture agency, UNESCO, whose experts are concerned that not enough is being done to protect the city. Last year, Venice risked being added to UNESCO’s list of Endangered World Heritage Sites after experts at the agency listed mass tourism , along with climate change and development, as a major threat to its future. It urged City Hall to take steps to ameliorate the damage.

The municipal council approved the access fee just days before UNESCO was to vote on its status, and Venice stayed off the “in danger” list . But UNESCO officials said in a statement that “further progress still needs to be made” to conserve Venice.

Critics of the access fee note that officials have not capped the number of visitors, and they say that the nominal fee is hardly a deterrent. As recently as Friday, city officials said that about 80,000 visitors swelled the city’s narrow calli, as the streets are known, and the gardens of the 2024 Venice Biennale , still the world’s principal place to discover new art .

How else is Venice trying to restrict visitors?

Venice also has taken other steps it hopes will reduce what city officials call “mordi e fuggi” tourism, or “eat and flee,” referring to those who seek the city’s greatest hits — the Rialto Bridge and St. Mark’s Square — and who bring packed lunches and dump their garbage, contributing little to the local economy.

After years of heated debate and protests by vocal Venetians, the city banned cruise ships from its inner canals in 2021 , though Mr. Camatti, the tourism expert, said the ban on the ships had not reduced the number of day visitors.

This year, the city imposed a limit of 25 people per tour group and also banned the use of megaphones.
