REVIEWS FROM OUR CLIENTS

“Absolutely EVERYTHING about this trip was perfect: itinerary, food, lodgings, trip leaders, educational opportunities. A perfect example of why Wilderness Travel will always be our first choice when planning adventures.”
“We were taught so much beyond the usual viewpoint given to a tourist that I felt I had a much deeper understanding of the culture and history than I would have if traveling with a different company.”
“An incredible variety of activities was packed into the trip, yet we never felt rushed. It would be impossible to do what we did in the same period of time without the expertise of WT guides.”
“I have dreamed of taking this trip for years. Truly this journey exceeded my expectations on all fronts. The wildlife, terrain, people, staff and fellow trip mates made it an adventure to always treasure. I feel blessed and fortunate. Thank you Wilderness Travel. You have my complete confidence.”
“Because of our Trek Leader’s vast experience in the area, we used several trails that aren’t known to many trekkers and we were invited into Sherpa homes, which was wonderful. I had been dreaming of this trip for 30 years and now those dreams are fulfilled.”
“Couldn’t have asked for a more interesting trip and two outstanding guides, accommodations, and meals. This was our fourth trip with Wilderness Travel and one of the best (although we say that about every trip we have been on!)”
“I love Wilderness Travel! You select the best guides, a variety of special places to stay, the food is always plentiful and cultural, and the adventure is top drawer! Thank you for offering trips that expand one’s knowledge of other cultures while making it enjoyable and fun.”
“We are still on a high a month after the trip, having had wonderful guides, camp crew, co-travelers, and the right mix of comfort and authentic experience.”
“WOW! This was an extraordinary trip. It was meticulously planned, but allowed for many spontaneous interactions and delightful surprises. Another WT success story.”
“This was my first trip to India and I cannot imagine a better introduction. Because of the care with which the trip had been planned and organized, I was able to relax, enjoy, and try to fully absorb the experience without spending even a moment concerned about the quotidian details of the trip. What a luxury.”
“Everyone was so thorough and helpful. It was like being whisked around on a magic carpet. Doors opened, every wish fulfilled, amazing service!”
“It was an indescribable, life-affirming experience that I will always cherish. In particular, I wanted to commend your selection of Trip Leaders. Their skill, thoughtfulness, and dedication made the entire trip seem effortless even though the challenge was great.”

Peru Treks & Tours

Witnessing a festival is a fantastic insight into the local culture | Richard I'Anson

With its rugged natural beauty, ancient ruins and architecture, rich history and vibrant culture, Peru is an unforgettable destination.

From deep within the Peruvian Andes rises Machu Picchu, the most spectacular legacy of the Inca Empire. Enshrouded in clouds and perched surreally among the verdant slopes of the Andes, the grand temples and terraces of Machu Picchu are one of the most awe-inspiring sights on Earth.

There's the striking city of Cusco, with its marriage of ancient Inca and Spanish colonial architecture; the vibrant capital of Lima, with its museums, galleries and buzzing food scene; the bustling markets overflowing with vivid textiles and handicrafts.

We trek and cycle among the sacred valleys, snowcapped peaks and ancient ruins of the Andes, and journey across the solitary high plains of the Altiplano; we cruise, raft and canoe our way through the lush jungles and twisting tributaries of the vast Amazon River basin; we tour vibrant cities and set our lenses on diverse and dramatic landscapes, always engaging with the people, culture and history of this incredible country.

No matter your age or inclination, World Expeditions has an exciting adventure ready to take you deep into the heart of Peru.

Our all inclusive approach

Our trips offer exceptional value for money featuring good quality, centrally located hotels and private transportation. We aim to incorporate as many inclusions as possible in the tour cost such as gear hire on treks, entrance and permit fees, transfers and most meals.

Authentic experiences

Whether you are trekking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, canoeing the waterways of the Amazon Rainforest, savouring the cuisines of Lima and Cusco or experiencing a traditional homestay on Lake Titicaca, our diverse range of active itineraries encapsulate the cultural heart of Peru. Our adventures take you off the beaten path to provide realistic insight into this corner of the world and the ways that its incredible geographic and cultural diversities fit together.

Experienced local guides

Our guides in the field are the real keys to our success, demonstrating a wealth of local knowledge and passion that they are eager to share with you. From climber Simon Yates of 'Touching the Void' to Javier Bello, one of the most experienced guides in the Andes, our team of experts ensure you receive the very best service as you gain insight into the unique Peruvian culture.

World firsts

We proudly pioneered the first commercial Inca Rivers Trek in Peru in 2004, showcasing a remote trail to the north of Machu Picchu. As a result, our knowledge of the region and logistics is second to none, ensuring your adventure is unforgettable.

Leaders in responsible travel

Responsible travel practice is at the heart of every program that we offer in Peru. When you book one of our adventures you're supporting true sustainability in the protection of local communities, natural environments and wildlife.

Litter collection

The 10 Pieces litter collection initiative, where travellers collect 10 pieces of plastic or paper litter on the trail each day, is offered on all our Peru treks. This simple yet effective initative harnesses the collective power of tourists to keep wilderness trails clean and to educate local communities about the negative impact of litter on their environment and tourism economy.

7 Principals of Leave No Trace

We use campsites that are not on cultivated land, are not near sources of drinking water and are always on durable, well drained surfaces. All waste is carried out, and campfires are not lit on our treks, with the exception of village visits where sheep or llama droppings are used as a fuel source or an underground stone oven is used.

Porter welfare policies

Porters receive the same access to medical service as clients. We provide three meals per day, as well as gas stoves for cooking, and are one of five companies (among almost 200) that pay the highest wages. All porters can access interest free long-term loans from us and are provided with basic life and accident insurance, full coverage of medical costs that they incur, transport to and from the trek's start and finish, sleeping tents, sleeping pads and bags, footwear, warm jackets and raingear.

In cities or large towns you will be accommodated in 3 to 4 star properties that are centrally located, atmospheric and reliable.

Our lodges provide comfortable accommodation that is well maintained and with good facilities.

Gain wonderful insight into the local culture during a homestay, a style of accommodation where a local family opens their home to you.

Enjoy our fully supported camping in quality two person tents erected in scenic wilderness.

His favourite trek is the high Inca Trail.

He loves any trek that's off the beaten track, of which World Expeditions has many.

wilderness travel peru

Jose Ugarte

Jose has been leading tours and treks for more than 20 years and if he hadn't become a guide would have ended up a botanist or biologist in the Amazon. We're happy he chose the former as he is now recognised as one of Cusco's best guides with great humour and endless knowledge. His favourite trips involve both trekking and expeditions into the rainforest.

wilderness travel peru

Admil studied Andean Anthropology and Archaeology before becoming a guide in 2004. He is a great companion for anyone wanting to travel through the mountains and valleys of Southern Peru with his knowledge of local customs and both modern and pre Inca history. Joana Miranda

Joana is one of our youngest guides and is a university graduate of Archaeology and Andean Mythology. She was born in the highlands of Cusco and speaks Quechua, English, Spanish and Portuguese. wilderness travel peru

Lily Caceres

She has real attention to detail and makes sure that every little detail is carefully organised by our large team of professional guides and camp-staff in the Andes. Students take an Amazon cruise on their educational travel trip in Peru - Photo: Drew Collins

The main trekking season in Peru lasts from late April - mid October. This is the dry but 'cold' period, with the best mountain views and all passes open.

The Costa dry coastal desert region experiences mild average daily temperatures ranging from 19 °C (66 °F) in winter to 22 °C (72 °F) in summer. Rain-bearing winds from the Amazon Basin are blocked by the Andes mountain system, contributing to the west coast of South America having one of the driest climates on Earth. Despite this, coastal fogs (garúa) provide some areas of the Costa with sufficient moisture to support some vegetation. These fogs cloak the central and southern beaches from April - early December, but coastal cities can be visited all year regardless, and the northern beaches will keep sun-worshippers happy year-round.

Variance in latitude, elevation and local winds all factor into the wide range of climates experienced in the central Sierra/Andean mountain region. Average temperatures in the Sierra vary little between seasons, but there is dramatic daily variance. While the average daily temp may only vary a few °C between January and July, the diurnal (daily) temp range is often huge: you can expect daytime temperatures in the highlands to be in the range of 10-25 °C (50-77 °F), falling as low as -10 °C (14 °F) at night.

Higher elevations in the Sierra receive snow falls, with many peaks having permanent snow caps. In general, temperatures decrease as elevation increases, and rainfall decreases from north to south and from east to west. November – March brings the rainy season to the Sierra highlands, with the heaviest precipitation in the north and along the eastern flanks of the Andes, facing the Amazon Basin. Some trek routes do not operate at these times due to possible wet conditions on the passes, but the heavy rain periods do not usually arrive until late January.

The eastern Amazonia region is characterised by wet tropical conditions. High rainfall is common throughout the year, although somewhat heavier from December - March. As in the Sierra region, there is little variance in seasonal average temperature but relatively large daily temperature variation, with daily temperatures often ranging from lows of 15 °C (60s°F) to highs of mid-30s °C (mid-90s °F). Be prepared to shelter from rain pretty much all year, but be consoled by the fact that downpours rarely last more than a few hours.

Peru is a country of great linguistic diversity. Spanish is the main official language, spoken by 84.1% of the population; Quechua is the second official language spoken by 13%; followed by the third official language of Aymara at 1.7%; then Ashaninka 0.3%; other native languages (including a large number of minor Amazonian languages) 0.7%; and Other 0.2%. Some English (and other European languages) is spoken in cities and major tourist areas, but attempts to speak basic Spanish will be well received.

Please note however that passports will not receive immigration entry or exit stamps at any international airport in Peru. Instead, entry and exit from the country will be digitally recorded.

Additional Information

The Incas placed their most revered sites high above the Sacred Valley of the Urubamba River, with mystical Machu Picchu perched on a promontory at its farthest reaches. We've created a fantastic adventure in this stunning valley with exhilarating hikes by day and comfy overnights in hotels and lodges (no camping!). Our hikes bring us to major Inca sites as well as hidden Inca ruins as we descend traditional paths to farming villages in the Sacred Valley, with breathtaking views all the way, and we follow trails to fascinating archaeological sites. We'll also visit a Quechua village for a traditional pachamanca feast honoring Mother Earth, and finish with an overnight at the coveted Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, right next to the ruins.

Days 1-4 Cusco / Sacred Valley / Pisac Exploring Inca sites on foot, we hike from the imposing Saqsayhuaman fortress down past the rock monolith of Q'enqo and Inca springs at Tambo Machay, with a final stroll right into Cusco's colonial neighborhood, San Blas. From atmospheric Chinchero, built on Inca foundations high above the valley, we descend rows of Inca terracing as we cross the mountain-ringed Sacred Valley. One hike brings us through an Inca cemetery to spectacular Pisac, a temple-ruin clinging to a mountain spur. Its Inca agricultural terraces are still in use today.

Days 5-6 Sacred Valley / Ollantaytambo We visit the enigmatic terraces of Moray, where the Incas built concentric terraces in natural depressions in the valley, then hike from Maras to the roaring Urubamba River, a great spot for our picnic lunch. In the early morning, when the light is dramatic and there are fewer visitors, we visit the massive ruins of Ollantaytambo and the quaint 13th century town below it, a beautiful example of Inca city planning. At a remote village, we enjoy a festive pachamanca lunch (meat slow-roasted over hot stones). Generations of trail crew, cooks, and porters for Wilderness Travel's renowned Inca Trail staff are from this traditional village, and we are welcomed here as family.

Days 7-9 Machu Picchu / Cusco The morning train brings us to Machu Picchu. Many travelers rush in and out of here within a few hours, but our overnight stay at the Sanctuary Lodge, right at the gates of this indescribable Inca city, gives us plenty of time to discover its mysteries with our specialist guide. Return to Cusco on Day 8 and depart on Day 9.

Wilderness International Peru

"save the rainforest" projects on the pulse of the amazon.

Hot jungle air, colorful macaws, but also the noise of the street in Puerto Maldonado... This is the working atmosphere of our Peruvian rainforest conservation organization in the most biodiverse place on earth.

Our mission here is to save the last remnants of contiguous rainforest in Peru. They are fiercely contested. Land is coveted for agriculture, timber and gold mining. Roads cut habitats and from there the herringbone pattern of clear-cutting eats into the forest.

Working with the people of the region and developing joint projects such as agroforestry for sustainable livelihoods are at the core of our work here. Without them, rainforest conservation would be unthinkable.

Our big goal, the international protection of wilderness, we put into practice every day in many different projects, piece by piece.

The Wilderness International Peru team consists of the Asamblea General, the Consejo Directivo (Board of Directors) and numerous volunteers.

Wilderness International

Chief Financial Officer

I was born in the Andes, in Urcos, near Cusco, a wonderful place full of nature at that time. As a child, I moved with my family to Madre de Dios, where I have now lived for more than 45 years. I love the trees, rivers, streams and waterfalls, the heat and the sounds of nature with its thousands of species of animals here. Although I have to admit that I don't like mosquitoes very much. I have worked for numerous entities in Puerto Maldonado, from tourist accommodations to government organizations to family businesses. But working with Wilderness International is the most fulfilling for me because I see us preserving the things I love so much. And most importantly, because I feel that in this way I can also raise awareness in others about how to care for, protect, and preserve our beautiful natural world.

Wilderness International

CEO WI Peru

I have been living in Peru since 1995 and carry out projects for the organization Fauna Forever to research biodiversity, protect tropical forests, provide environmental education and develop local communities. My focus is on the rainforests of the Madre de Dios region in the south-east of the country. I previously completed a PhD in Biology at the University of East Anglia, an MRes at the University of York and a BSc at the University of Edinburgh.

My joining Wilderness International was definitely a happy coincidence – in the right place at the right time, with the right people committed to preserving wild nature. A Peruvian friend introduced me to Fabian Mühlberger in 2018. Fabian and David MacDonald then accompanied me to the Peruvian Tambopata rainforest to photograph the wildlife of the Amazon and to explore the potential for conservation projects in the region. It is always fun for me to show environmentally conscious people this corner of the Amazon, because the sheer diversity of animal and plant species never ceases to take people's breath away. I was very pleased that Fabian and David were no exceptions.

I believe in community conservation because it takes a lot of minds and skills to properly implement processes in this area. That's why we soon started talking about WI's conservation goals. It quickly became clear that WI's strategy of preserving wilderness areas with high biodiversity would fit very well into the local socio-ecological context, and soon enough, I began to actively support the WI team in establishing a permanent presence in the Peruvian Amazon. Today, I am the Chairman of the Board of Directors of WI-Peru and lead the process of evaluating and subsequently sourcing suitable land for long-term conservation measures in Peru.

Wilderness International

My biology studies have taught me to respect, appreciate, and above all, love nature. It has brought me here, to my beloved jungle, to accomplish a great work. It reminds me of what a great poet once said, "Turn a tree into firewood and it will burn for you, but it will not bear flowers or fruit for your children."-Rabindranath Tagore. Meanwhile, it is not just words, it is our reality. It is inexplicable to be able to study and protect from everything that is most dear to me. To even be able to make it my profession is one of the best gifts that life could give me. I studied biology at UNSAAC in Cusco and have since worked in various projects in the Madre de Dios region, including an environmental study for the regeneration of natural areas destroyed by gold mines and the renaturation of tree species threatened with extinction.

Wilderness International

Founding Member WI Peru, Member of the Board of Directors WI Peru

Having grown up in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest, I have been fascinated by nature since I was a child. That's why I did my bachelor's degree in forestry in Peru, then my master's degree in forest ecology in Germany, and am currently doing my PhD in plant ecology. The more I have learned, the more I have come to love and appreciate nature and everything that belongs to it. And I have developed a comprehensive understanding of how quickly humanity exploits nature.

Rising population figures, deforestation, environmental pollution, the depletion of natural resources and all the associated consequences are problems that concern me every day. I would like to contribute to solving them. As a Peruvian, I look at these problems from a very personal perspective. As part of Wilderness International, I want to contribute to the protection and restoration of unique ecosystems around the world, starting in my own country.

I was born in Lima-Peru, but moved to Puerto Maldonado, Madre de Dios, 17 years ago with my parents and brother. I am studying law at the Universidad Nacional Amazónica De Madre De Dios (UNAMAD). I love nature and always try to be outside and gain new experiences. I am very happy and satisfied to be part of Wilderness International Peru. My biggest dream is to be able to help and defend people in need. I thank my mother, father and brother for supporting me in all my dreams.

Wilderness International

forest guardian

I am originally from the highlands of Peru and am proud of my roots in Arequipa. I have known the jungle for many years. My children were born in Madre de Dios. I immediately fell in love with the jungle and carried out many important construction works for the city, for example the obelisk of Madre de Dios. I consider myself a lover of biodiversity and a connoisseur of flora and fauna since I was 20 years old. I am happy to be part of WI because I like the approach of protecting nature and preserving what little we have left of our wonderful forests.

In the heart of the Amazon, this pristine wilderness shows nature’s resilience

Ecuador’s Yasuní National Park, along the banks of the Napo River, shows how biodiversity can thrive when humans don’t interfere.

A yellow-spotted river turtle with a butterfly perched on its shell

Amid the din of tragic tales of environmental degradation in the Amazon, there are other, quieter but no less compelling stories testifying to the sheer power of nature to thrive when left untouched. Such is the case of the Napo River, which flows along the north of Ecuador’s Yasuní National Park .

“It’s a place where all your senses explode. You’re not just seeing life all over, you’re hearing calls of birds, frogs, the wind; smelling the pollen of plants, the soil, the rain. It’s overwhelming,” says biologist, conservationist and environmental photographer Lucas Bustamante . “For anyone in love with nature, it’s like being a kid in a toy store.”

A trio of hoatzins (Opisthocomus hoazin) hanging over a stream by the Napo River

Established in 1979 in northwestern Amazonia, Yasuní National Park is the largest conservation area in Ecuador. It protects some 1,1 million hectares of Amazon rainforest, an area roughly the size of Croatia. It’s one of the most biodiverse forests on the planet—and the Napo River is the artery pumping life into its heart.

The river begins in the high slopes of the Andes to the east and marks the park’s northern frontier. It eventually joins the Amazon River to the west, after crossing into Peru.

Bustamante is from Ecuador, and he organizes expeditions for photographers into Añangu, a village by the Napo River managed by local Kichwa indigenous families. Twenty years ago, the group decided to pursue ecotourism instead of logging and hunting as their main source of income. The project has thrived, and so has nature.

“It took a few years for the animals to start coming back, and for the forest to start recovering,” Bustamante says. “Right now, it’s like a small paradise, an island of biodiversity.”

‘aquatic spiderweb’.

This pristine space was the perfect place for photographer Thomas Peschak , who wanted to capture the deep connections between the Amazon’s animals and its waterways. A National Geographic Explorer, Peschak is working on a long-term project to document the rainforest from the water—its “aquatic spiderweb” of giant rivers with hundreds of tributaries and thousands of streams.

He and Bustamante spent weeks on a canoe paddling on the creeks around the Napo River, looking for endemic species like the giant river otter. These endangered mammals are among the Amazon’s top five predators, wolfing down seven pounds of fish in one day. Their presence is a strong indicator of a healthy aquatic ecosystem .

“Across the Amazon we are seeing things deteriorate, but Napo really bucks the trend. Because there’s no poaching, illegal logging or mining a lot of the wildlife around the river is incredibly relaxed around people,” says Peschak.

That ease, in turn, gives Peschak a unique opportunity to capture and showcase many animals’ behavior in the wild, like a butterfly drinking the tears from a river turtle’s eyes, a giant otter snatching up a fish, and red howler monkeys feeding on leaves above a stream.

Not everything is so simple, however. In the days before Peschak’s expedition, heavy rain swelled the Andean headwaters. Water levels in the Napo River rose dramatically, making its streams overflow and bleed into the forest.

The flood, while not unusual for the river and its ecosystem, made the explorers’ search for otters much harder. The flooded streams meant that the animals could swim far inside the flooded forest, away from the main riverways. So Peschak and Bustamante spent seven days paddling with no otters in sight—until, on the final day, they saw a group of them feasting on fish.

“In this job, you have to be patient beyond stupidity,” says Peschak. “When every bone and brain cell in your body tells you to give up, that's when you have to keep going. Patience and persistence are rewarded by nature.”

Highway of seeds

The remarkable biodiversity around the Napo River reflects its descent from the foothills of the Andes to the Amazon Basin . These ecosystems blend along its banks in a unique way, and this means that the Yasuní National Park has a vast array of species within its bounds.

A red howler monkey (Alouatta seniculus) seated in a tree picking leaves and fruits

The Napo is also loaded with nutrients from the Andes, including rich ash from volcanic eruptions. It’s a whitewater river, which designates waterways carrying large amounts of sediments, giving them a muddy color. It’s also an efficient disperser of seeds. “The Napo River is like a highway in which millions of seeds travel from the Andes and across the region, helping species to propagate,” says biologist Gonzalo Rivas-Torres.

This flow of seeds is also a crucial food source for the great variety of fish found in the Napo’s waters. And this has ripple effects on the rest of the forest, far beyond the river’s bends.

“Fish depend on the amount of nutrients, fruits and seeds in the water. If the forests by the riversides aren’t in good shape, fish populations will be low, and otters won’t have enough food,” he explains. “Everything is connected.”

Rivas-Torres is the director of the Tiputini Biodiversity Station, a biological field station kept by Universidad San Francisco de Quito in collaboration with Boston University for research, education and conservation.

Their base is on the banks of the Tiputini River, a tributary of the Napo. From this perch, Rivas-Torres says he’s always spellbound to see wildlife so close and all around. His students have wept after seeing a jaguar in the wild for the first time, for example, or when releasing a yellow-spotted turtle back into the river.

“They say they didn’t expect to see this, or they didn’t know Ecuador was also this.” Rivas-Torres says. “It’s a life changing experience.”
