About Sasebo

Sasebo lies on the western end of Japan, and is a hub for foreigners due to the presence of a U.S Navy base. The second largest city in Nagasaki Prefecture, Sasebo presents a vibrant option by the coast for visitors interested in urban and natural sightseeing.

The Huis Ten Bosch theme park, which is Dutch-themed, is a major attraction in the city. The rows of tulips combined with the Dutch-styled buildings will transport you to Europe instantly, and the regular fireworks shows add some glamour to the visit.

Sasebo is home to the Sakai National Park 99 islands, otherwise known as Kujukushima. The area actually contains 208 uninhabited islands instead of the 99 mentioned in its name. There are three observation towers — Tenkaiho, Ishidake and Yumihari — to admire the landscape's beauty. Visitors can also get up close and personal with the islands on one of two touring boats at the Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort.

Japan first traded with the West here, and the influences are still strong

Curving around the north of Nagasaki Prefecture are Sasebo and Hirado, a haven for culture and nature lovers alike.

How to Get There

JR limited express trains run from Hakata Station in Fukuoka. This two-hour journey will set you back around 5,000 yen round trip. You can also get the hourly JR Seaside Liner trains from Nagasaki. A 100-minute journey for 1,680 yen one way. Nagasaki Airport and Sasebo are connected by airport buses (75 minutes, 1,400 yen one way).

Now an internationally important city, Sasebo was once a humble fishing village controlled by the Hirado Domain until shortly after the Meiji period.

It was around this time that the Admiral of the Imperial Japanese Navy, Heihachiro Togo, surveyed Sasebo. Seeing the protected deep-water harbor, nearby coal mines, and its geographic proximity to China and Korea, he took the initiative. Sasebo Naval District was founded in 1889. This harbor came to play an important part as a major port for the Japanese navy during the First Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War. It remained a major navy base until the end of World War II.

The Sasebo we know today was founded on April 1, 1902. Although it was spared an atomic bomb, Sasebo suffered heavy damage during World War II.

After the end of World War II, the United States Navy took over part of Sasebo base and formed the U.S. Fleet Activities Sasebo in 1946.

Because of the U.S military base, Sasebo allows visitors to experience various aspects of American culture. The most famous of these is Sasebo's acclaimed Sasebo Burger. Soft and sticky buns, and an abundance of lettuce and sauce—these together make the Sasebo burger delicious.

Connected to the mainland Nagasaki by a red bridge, Hirado is just a short drive from Sasebo. Hirado was once the port of call for ships between the Asian mainland and Japan as far back as the Nara Period (710-784).

Most of this trade took place at the Hirado Dutch Trading Post, built in 1609, which you can still visit today.

Similarly to Sasebo, Hirado has also been influenced heavily by foreign visitors—primarily the Dutch. Hirado still retains its own style of Japanese culture, however, making it a unique and fascinating place to visit.

In addition to the Trading Post, try visiting Hirado Castle, once the home of the Matsura Clan. Offering gorgeous views of Hirado Port and the ancient forest of Kurokojima Island, the castle is the perfect place to look out over Hirado.

If it's culture you're after, Hirado has it in abundance. Rich with festivals famous across Japan, you should be able to take part in one regardless of what time of year you visit. Perhaps the most notable is the Tabira Jangara, a harvest dance where the dancers keep their faces hidden throughout the performance. Because of it's elegance and cultural importance, this dance has been listed as a National Intangible Cultural Property.

For nature lovers, the Kawachi-toge pass is a beautiful walk, offering a uniquely panoramic view of the island. On a clear day, you may even be able to spot Iki and Tsushima off into the distance. Kawachi-toge pass is perfect for a hike on a beautiful day.

In spring Hirado holds the Hirado Thousand Lantern Festival. Said to celebrate the renewal of spring, the festival is held over two days in April. Come see Fumonji Temple illuminated with stone and bamboo lanterns. Each bamboo lantern is hand carved by local artisans.

The city is alive, with food stalls lining the streets and live music. Come walk the winding cobbled path to the temple and enjoy this beautiful festival.

If you arrive early enough, you can get a prime view of Jigenzakura, a 140-year-old giant sakura tree—a sight not to miss.

Enjoy the attractions of the port town of Sasebo, filled with historical sites and exotic culture

A seawind journey over two nights and three days

A city incorporating many islands and varied landscapes, Sasebo has deep ties to the sea. Located in Nagasaki Prefecture, Sasebo flourished as a military port. After World War II, American culture played a major role in the formation of a distinctive international culture. Everywhere you go in the city, you will notice foreign influences. The cultural melange is a special feature of Sasebo.

Wanting to bask in the seawind and the international ambience, I took a two-night, three-day trip to experience as many of the city's attractions as I could.

Seawind Journey: Day 1

I arrived in Sasebo in the evening. Straight off, I headed to the Kujuku Islands to immerse myself in the aura of the great outdoors.

Kujuku Islands

About 20 minutes outside the city center is the Tenkaiho Observatory. From here, you can see wide, beautiful panoramas of the scenery that take in the complex Rias coastline and the 208 Kujuku Islands. This area served as the opening to The Last Samurai . It is always beautiful here, and when the sun sets, it feels like there is magic in the air. (I timed my arrival for that reason!)

With the rays of the setting sun reflecting off the water and the islands in silhouette, it seemed as though I was looking at a black ink painting. Time seemed to stop when I gazed over the textured artforms molded by Mother Nature.

Returning downtown in the twilight, I found that the town had undergone a complete transformation. With American flags and neon signs everywhere, it almost felt like I had been whisked away to the United States. There are a lot of expat bars here, commonly known as gaikokujin bars , where visitors to Japan and expats like to gather. One that I�fd like to mention in particular is the Gramophone. It has the perfect atmosphere for American expats to get a taste of home while in Sasebo. The expats tend to pile in after nine at night, so come later if you are looking for some lively nightlife.

Seawind Journey: Day 2

Sasebo morning market.

For great early-morning sightseeing, visit the Sasebo Morning Market, about a ten-minute walk from Sasebo Station. Things start moving at an eye-opening three o�fclock in the morning, but the peak hours for goods are between five and seven o�f clock, so you can still enjoy the morning market without sacrificing that much sleep. In addition to freshly caught seafood, you will find fresh produce, tsukemono pickles, dried foods and many other delectables to buy.

To dive deeper into the history, lifestyle and culture of Sasebo, I headed out to the beautiful Uku Island. Remote and filled with natural beauty, Uku Island is located at the northern tip of the Goto Islands, about two and-a-half hours on the jetfoil from the ferry terminal at the Port of Sasebo.

Dress like a samurai

On Uku Island, you can dress up in full armor like a samurai (advance reservation required). It takes about 15 to 30 minutes to get fully attired, much of which is done with assistance. Once I was fully kitted out, I went to Kojima-jinja Shrine to take photos.

What do you think? I think I�fd make a first-rate samurai. I had fun striking different poses and acting out samurai scenes for pictures, but it really surprised me how heavy the armor was. It�fs amazing to think that people used to fight while wearing this.

Ohama Beach

Nature is among the wonderful attractions of Uku Island, and Ohama Beach feels like a vast landscape of art painted by the sea. There are the waves that dash themselves on the volcanic rocks and then the beautiful sea with its gradations of color extending from the sandy beach outward. Other notable features include the Tsushimase Lighthouse, which stands solitary on a gently sloping promontory covered with grass, and the horizon beyond in the distance. Everywhere you go on the island you will see beauty (and your social media followers will love your posts!)

On the island, you can stay overnight at a private residence in what�fs sometimes called a minshuku taiken , or homestay. I opted for such accommodations on my second night. I pitched in to make dinner with the family. The warmth that the Uku islanders extend to strangers is one of the great qualities of the residents. Sitting around the dinner table, my host mother and father made me feel like part of the family, refreshing me with their warmth. It was a wonderful night I will never forget.

Seawind Journey: Day 3

After a fun time on Uku Island, I returned to downtown Sasebo. For my last day, I explored Sasebo on foot!

Guided Walking Tour of Sasebo

The �gSasebo Naval Town Walking Tour�h provides a guided tour of the city in Japanese or English (reservations required). The guide explains the historical significance of famous spots, shows you some of the culinary high points of the town, and provides other information. I highly recommend it!

The Sasebo Burger

For the gourmand traveling to Sasebo, the Sasebo burger is a must-try. Said to be the cradle of the Japanese hamburger, Sasebo is filled with burger joints. My pick was BigMan, an established restaurant that is considered standard-setting, where I ordered their ganso (founding) bacon-and-egg burger. I couldn�ft believe how high it was stacked! Definitely a Sasebo burger. The juicy patty, smoked bacon, crunchy fresh lettuce, and soft fried egg come together with the specially made mayonnaise to create a superb harmony. An absolute winner! If you come to Sasebo, make sure to try one.

Over my three days at Sasebo, I had a lot of adventures and learned about some of the local history in-depth. I felt the warmth of locals, and my mind and body were reenergized by the calm atmosphere. I recommend that you get out to Sasebo, Land of the Seawind, and experience some of the many breezes that blow gently around it.

An amazing part of traveling is discovering a new place, but there’s something special about returning to a beloved destination—which also speaks volumes about what makes a place stand out as one of the best.

So what are the places travelers want to return to the most?

Travel insurance specialists InsureandGo recent issued a report ranking the places that travelers are most eager to revisit . To come up with this list, the researchers looked at almost 500 countries, cities and global tourist attractions, then analyzed thousands of comments on Reddit and numerous online reviews to uncover the places that hold the greatest allure for repeat visits.

“There’s no end to the experiences you can have while traveling, with so many different countries and cities around the globe just waiting to be explored,” Russell Wallace, travel insurance expert at InsureandGo, said in a release. “In some instances, however, traveling to the same place repeatedly can in fact, provide a richer experience. Bringing with it a deeper understanding of a destination, along with local insights and maybe even discovering some hidden gems.”

Topping the list of countries that travelers yearn to revisit is Japan, which is renowned for its rich culture and diverse offerings. With an impressive 324 mentions on Reddit discussions alone, Japan has clearly enchanted visitors with its captivating blend of tradition and modernity, from the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serene landscapes of Kyoto.

Following closely behind Japan are Italy and Spain, two perennial favorites among globetrotters. With 294 and 209 mentions respectively, these Mediterranean gems captivate visitors with their culinary delights, stunning coastlines and architectural wonders.

When it comes to cities, London—with its iconic landmarks like Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London—reigns supreme as the ultimate destination for repeat visits. Rounding out the top five on the list: Paris, Barcelona and New York City (a tie), then Rome.

When it comes to tourist attractions, Dollywood was named the place travelers want to return to most. Set in the heart of Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains, this theme park—partly owned by the legendary Dolly Parton—delights visitors with its unique blend of entertainment, nostalgia and Southern hospitality. Disneyland in California came in at number two. A number of locations tied for the fifth spot on the list, including Yosemite National Park, England’s Blenheim Palace and Tokyo Disneyland.
