Tourist Attractions of Corella

Secure your Cebu Bohol  ferry tickets today to start your unforgettable journey!

The municipality of Corella is much endowed with beautiful spots and attractions worthy of a visit. Its rolling terrain, thick forests and verdant rice fields are true manifestations of God’s grandeur and bounty in the area. Yet God’s greatest gift to Corella is the tarsier. Their presence in the municipality makes it one of the tourist destinations of Bohol.

The tarsiers are found in the barangays of Canapnapan, Cancatac, Tanday, Sambog and the Poblacion. Being endangered specie, the smallest primate is now being preserved, nurtured and fed in Corella by the Philippine Tarsier Foundation. In fact Corella as well as neighboring towns have been declared a tarsier sanctuary by the government.

The Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary

The Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary is a 167- hectare forested land within the municipalities of Corella, Sikatuna and Loboc established by the Philippine Tarsier Foundation.

The sanctuary is mostly of secondary growth forest some portions of which are open and relatively bare yet majority has lush vegetation mostly of second-growth trees, bamboo clumps, tall grass patches and thick bushes that tarsiers prefer.

One can also observe different fauna and flora in the forested areas. The later has signage with their scientific name, place of origin, geographical distribution, and a brief explanation of their properties and traditional applications.

Tarsier Research and Development Center

The Tarsier Research and Development Center is within the Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary. The Center is located at Cancatac, about three kilometers from the town proper of the municipality of Corella. The Tarsier Research and Development Center serves as a visitor center and a venue for research, as well as a habitat preserve. Visitors are oriented with the unique characteristics and habits of the animal through photos and audio-visual presentations.

Near the visitor’s center is an enclosed area with a seven-foot high fence where some tarsiers are kept for feeding, captive breeding and display. Within this spacious net enclosure, 100 of these animals are kept to easily monitor their development and production; and to protect them from predators like feral cats as well as from poachers and hunters.

Tarsier Trail

The Tarsier Trail has been set-up deep within the woods of the Sanctuary, starting at Corella and runs thru the towns of Sikatuna heading towards Loboc. Trained guides are provided to trekkers. The trail winds among wooded areas of mahogany and teak with wide varieties of palm, fern, bamboo, and other tropical plants and trees. Other animals, especially birds, also inhabit the forest.

The Corella Church of Nuestra Señora del Villar (Our Lady of the Village)is often visited by tourists who come to Bohol on pilgrimages or who are on heritage tours. The present church was built in the year 1924. The church is surrounded by a spacious and well-kept garden. The Tarsier Sanctuary is not far from it.

20 Epic Tourist Attractions in BOHOL – with prices

If you want to see the best of Bohol, this travel guide is for you! During my one-month backpacking trip in the Philippines , I spent almost one week on this beautiful island and I fell in love with its diversity.

From amazing beaches, to incredible waterfalls and stunning hills, Bohol has it all! You’ll find something different at every corner so be prepared for a bit of everything.

Virgin Island Panglao, Bohol

There are so many tourist spots in Bohol that it’s hard to decide which one to see first. In my opinion, spending at least three days on this exotic island is necessary to see all it has to offer.

Without further ado, these are the top things to do in Bohol. Get ready for incredible sights mixed with a lot of adrenaline!

Good to know – Bohol has another smaller brother – Panglao Island. These two islands are connected through two bridges. This guide includes tourist attractions on both islands.

Things to know when visiting Bohol

Here are a few things you need to keep in mind when visiting Bohol. These tips & tricks will make your life easier and your trip more enjoyable.

  • rent a motorbike – If you want to explore the island at your own pace, rent a motorbike. We rented ours from our guesthouse.
  • entrance fees –  Most of the tourist attractions in Bohol (including waterfalls) have entrance fees. Make sure to always have some cash on you at all times.
  • always negotiate – If you plan on buying souvenirs, you can always negotiate the price.

Top things to do in Bohol, Philippines

1. Bamboo Hanging Bridge

The Twin Bamboo Hanging Bridge in Bohol, Philippines

One of the places you have to visit in Bohol is the Bamboo Hanging Bridge . There are actually two suspended bamboo bridges that you can visit. You’ll cross one bridge and come back on the other.

Both bridges are hanging over the Sipatan River. The area is surrounded by lush vegetation and the views are pretty spectacular. However, keep in mind that this is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Bohol so expect to find lots of tourists there.

To read my full guide about the Bamboo Hanging Bridge, click here .

Bamboo Hanging Bridge entrance fee –   35 PHP per person

2. Dimiao Falls

Girl in front of Dimiao Twin Falls in Bohol

I’ve visited many waterfalls during my  one-and-a-half trip in Asia but Dimiao Falls is one of my favorites. To get to it you’ll need a motorbike. Unfortunately, this waterfall is not included in any of the guided tours available.

However, driving to Dimiao Falls is totally worth it. This waterfall is well hidden inside the dense jungle and fortunately, there are only a few tourists who know about it. This is one of the Bohol hidden gems.

Don’t forget to bring your swimming suit!

When we visited there were only a few of locals at the waterfall. Some of them were cliff jumping. If you want to try it too, make sure that the water is deep enough! Otherwise, you can simply enjoy the view, walk on the suspended bamboo bridges or swim in the natural pool formed at the base of the falls.

To read my complete guide about Dimiao Falls, click here .

Dimiao Falls entrance fee – 20 PHP per person

3. Corella Tarsier Sanctuary

Tarsier Sanctuary in Bohol

Tarsiers are some of the cutest animals and they can be found on Bohol Island. It’s extremely important to visit a responsible sanctuary because when stressed, Tarsiers commit suicide. I strongly recommend visiting the Corella Tarsier Sanctuary where these cute animals are kept safe.

Don’t visit places where Tarsiers are kept in cages or where tourists are allowed to get extremely close to them. These are the smallest primates and what makes them really special is the fact that they can rotate their head 180 degrees each direction. It will be a unique experience to see them!

Entrance fee to Corella Tarsier Sanctuary – 50 PHP per person

4. Alona Beach

Boat at Alona Beach Panglao, Bohol

Alona Beach is a must see in Bohol. This is the starting point for all the island hopping tours but it’s also a great place to spend a few hours relaxing, eating something delicious, or swimming.

This is the most popular beach in Bohol and for good reason. The white sand combined with the turquoise water creates a spectacular sight. The only downside to this place is the fact that there are many tourists.

If you’re looking for a hidden beach that you can enjoy by yourself, Alona Beach is not the one! However, I still think it’s a great beach and it’s definitely worth visiting.

To read my complete guide about Alona Beach, click here .

tourist spots in corella bohol

5. Anda Cave Pools

Far away from the touristy area is the beautiful town of Anda. The Cave Pools near this town are some pretty fascinating places that are worth visiting. The most popular one is called Cabagnow Cave Pool .

Some of these caves have stairs leading to the pools. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can swim there.

6. Chocolate Hills

Bohol itinerary

What else to visit in Bohol? Well, you can’t leave the island without seeing the famous Chocolate Hills. There are many viewpoints around the island but I chose to go to the “ Chocolate Hills View Point ” and I wasn’t disappointed.

After climbing a few stairs, I reached the top of the viewing platform and I was rewarded with some awesome views towards the Chocolate Hills. Too bad the rain was coming and we had to leave after just a few minutes.

The Chocolate Hills are round-shaped hills, covered in grass. During the summer, the grass changes its color and turns into brown – hence the name Chocolate Hills. It is estimated that there are over 1800 of such dome-shaped hills on Bohol Island.

-> To book your guided tour to the Chocolate Hills, click here

7. Man-Made Forest

Bilar Loboc mahogany man-made forest in Bohol

One of the Bohol activities included in most of the guided tours is a stop at the Man-Made Forest. But what makes this forest unique, you might ask.

Well, it’s a 2-kilometer long man-made mahogany forest. It’s great for photos (you’ll see lots of tourists taking photos here) and perfect to relax for a few minutes. The tall trees create a natural tunnel, covering the sky. It’s a unique sight but not a must see. If you don’t have enough time, you can skip it :).

To read my full guide about the Bohol Man-Made Forest, click here .

8. Kinahugan Falls

There are plenty of tourist attractions in Bohol and Kinahugan Falls is one of them. Although this waterfall is not as impressive as Dimiao Falls or Can-Umantad Falls, it’s worth visiting if you have the time.

Kinahugan Falls is great for a quick swim. The waterfall is not very big but most probably you won’t find any tourists here which is a big plus.

9. Loboc River Cruise

Loboc River Cruise

The next on my list of things to do in Bohol is the Loboc River Cruise. This is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island and it involves some great views and a lot of delicious food.

Hop on the river cruise on the Sipatan River and admire the villages you’ll pass by and the lush greenery all while enjoying lunch. It doesn’t get better than this, trust me.

If you’re visiting Bohol during the high season, I recommend booking your tickets at least one day in advance.

10. Pangas Falls

Pangas Falls Bohol

One of the Bohol attractions you have to visit is Pangas Falls. What I loved about this waterfall was that there were no tourists in sight. I love off-the-beaten-path places where I can sit and enjoy the views.

Pangas Falls is situated close to the Chocolate Hills View Point and it’s the perfect place to go for a swim. The fresh water gathers in a natural pool at the base of the waterfall. Don’t forget your swimming suit home!

Entrance fee to Pangas Falls   – 30 PHP per person

11. Baclayon Church

If you don’t already know, most of the Filipinos are Catholic. Baclayon Church is considered to be one of the oldest churches in the country. Its construction was finished in 1727.

12. Go island hopping

Virgin Island Panglao, Bohol

My favorite activity in Bohol was the island hopping tour. All tours start from Alona Beach (you can buy your tickets there or online ) and they cover two incredible islands – Balicasag Island and Virgin Island .

You’ll have the chance to see the dolphins and swim with the turtles at Balicasag Island. My favorite place was the Virgin Island. This stretch of sand with no vegetation is surrounded by the clearest water I’ve ever seen.

If you’re feeling hungry, now is the time to grab something to eat. At the Virgin Island you’ll find lots of boats selling delicious local food. You can even find fresh coconuts. Is this paradise?

To read my complete guide about island hopping in Bohol, click here .

13. White Beach

Alona Beach Panglao, Bohol

If you’re looking for a more laid-back beach, White Beach is for you. This beach is mostly visited by locals and I loved watching the children playing in the sand.

Unlike Alona Beach, you won’t find many restaurants here but the views are pretty incredible. The water is great for swimming as there are almost no waves at all. Enjoy this hidden paradise!

14. Try some local food

Trying some local dishes is a must when in Bohol. Here are some of the things you have to try:

  • Calamay – a coconut shell full of glutinous rice, sugar, coconut milk and peanuts
  • Torta – a kind of bread cake
  • Peanut kisses – you’ll find these dome-shaped (just like the Chocolate Hills) cookies in supermarkets

15. Hinagdanan Cave

Bohol itinerary

Hinagdanan Cave is one of the things to see in Bohol. This unique cave is actually situated on Panglao Island (just across the bridge from Bohol) and is one of the most touristy attractions on the island.

Most guided tours include a stop at the Hingagdanan Cave. Once you climb down the narrow stairs, you’ll enter the cave that hides a large pool of fresh water. If you want, you can go swimming.

Honestly, I was pretty afraid to swim there since the cave was quite dark. Swimming in deep, dark water is one of my fears.

16. Ingkumhan Falls

tourist spots in corella bohol

What else to see in Bohol? Take your motorbike and head to the beautiful Ingkumhan Falls. This small waterfall is perfect for adventure seekers.

You can try cliff jumping and there is even a rope to swing above the natural pool formed at the base of the waterfall. You won’t find many tourists here. Relax and enjoy the nature!

17. Cadapdapan Rice Terraces

Bohol rice terraces

Located in the eastern part of the island, Cadapdanan Rice Terraces are proof of Bohol’s diversity. I never miss a chance to see some rice terraces.

There is something about their natural beauty that relaxes me. I could watch them for hours. If you have the time, add these rice terraces on your itinerary. If you don’t want to drive all the way to the rice terraces, book this guided tour .

18. Can-Umantad Falls

This is one of the tallest waterfalls on Bohol Island. The beauty of Can-Umantad Falls is impressive. There are several pools where you can swim and refresh yourself from the heat.

One unique thing about this waterfall is the incredibly blue water. If you feel like the sun is too harsh, you can hide in the shade of the trees. You can easily spend a few hours here.

It’s a long drive to Can-Umantad Falls and I recommend booking a guided tour. This tour includes other awesome stops at Anda Beach and Cadapdapan Rice Terraces.

19. Doljo Beach

tourist spots in corella bohol

One of the must see places in Bohol is Doljo Beach. If you’re searching for a place to watch the sunset, choose Doljo Beach. You’ll find many resorts on this exotic paradise but this beach is low-key compared to Alona Beach.

There are also a few restaurants, in case you get hungry. The atmosphere here is relaxed and the people are friendly towards tourists. Doljo Beach is also a great place for snorkeling.

20. Momo Beach

El Nido Twin Beach Sunset

I’m ending this list of things to do in Bohol with Momo Beach. Situated on Panglao Island, this awesome beach is a great choice if you want to escape from all the chaos surrounding the popular tourist attractions.

Grab some snacks and something to drink and head to Momo Beach to enjoy a magical sunset. This beach is perfect if you’re looking for a romantic place to spend the evening with your loved one.

Where to stay in Bohol

Finding the perfect accommodation on this big island might be challenging. I’ve been searching for the best hotels for each budget. Please find my recommendations below.

  • Mid Budget –  Mario Dive Resort  –  great location, clean & spacious rooms, great facilities

Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary

Previous Post: Dinner at Amarela Resort in Panglao Island

You Bohol Trip will not be complete without seeing and taking photos with tarsiers in Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella Bohol. That’s why on our second day, we visited the sanctuary as part of our Central Visayas Familiarization Tour – a project of PHILTOA. Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA) is the team behind the Philippines most successful yearly trade show – The Philippine Travel Mart 2012 .

Corella Tarsier Sancuary in Bohol

Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary was built to protect the endangered tarsier, the world’s smallest primates. The tarsier sanctuary is located exactly 4 kilometers from the town center of Corella and a mere 20 minutes drive from Tagbilaran City. The Corella Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary is maintained by a non-profit organization called Philippine Tarsier Foundation.

Corella Tarsier Sanctuary Bohol

Visitors, as well as researchers, can learn about this 45 million-year-old species of small primates that can amazingly turn their heads to 180 degrees. It provides immense knowledge about this endangered species and also a great opportunity to see one of the rare species in the world.

Inside the Tarsier Sanctuary

A visit to the sanctuary is just like a trip inside the deep forest having thick vegetation with different flora and fauna. Inside the sanctuary, travelers can see tarsiers that can freely live on its natural habitat. The tarsiers are kept in such manner so that they are free to travel inside the mini protected forest and roam inside the larger area of the sanctuary. Visitors have to enter the semi-enclosed area composed of shrubs and mini-forest where they can spot and take photos of the tiny tarsiers. Inside this sanctuary, tarsiers are found resting up in trees, behind leaves or in branches, jumping from one tree to another when disturbed.

Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary in Bohol

The Philippine Tarsiers have bigger eyes than brains and are nocturnal critters that literally will melt your heart. At just about 8-16 centimeters long, they are truly tiny and lovable. Even though they are that small they have been known to jump up to 16 feet! Good thing there’s a sanctuary that keeps them safe from wild and endangered species collector. The Corella Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary is an ideal place for the tarsiers as there is no population stress or any form of pollution. The sanctuary is a one of kind tourist attraction that is best for group tours, a company summer outing and Family trips.

The Smiling Tarsier

The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary has established a visitor’s complex to attract more guests. The visitor’s complex comprises of reception, exhibition area, audiovisual room, mini cafeteria, and toilet facilities. In addition to this, the sanctuary includes a library, research center related to tarsiers, conference rooms, and storage rooms. The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella is a hotspot for scientist, technicians, and research analysts related to tarsiers. A research center is constructed within the sanctuary equipped with laboratory and veterinary clinic for the betterment of the tarsiers.

Philtoa Fam Tour in Bohol

Separate pathways are provided from the visitor’s complex to various parts of the sanctuary. Tourists are not allowed to touch the tarsier and flash photography is also prohibited to protect the small primates.

Philippine Tarsier

They charge 50 Pesos entrance fee before you can enter the sanctuary. Guides are available in the sanctuary to provide details about the endangered species. In house tour guides normally go the sanctuary early to spot the location of the tarsiers so they would know where to find them when the tourist starts to arrive at the tarsier sanctuary.

How to Get There

Corella Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary is hardly 14 kilometers from the provincial capital Tagbilaran City. Buses and jeeps are available from the capital city on a regular basis to reach this place. Moreover, resorts in Bohol Island provide transportation facility to Corella. The sanctuary is located in a wide area of 134 hectares of forest area in Corella. Anyone can visit the sanctuary every day from 9 am to 4 pm except for Holidays. The best season to visit the Corella tarsier Sanctuary is from December to May.

Historic Sites In Bohol: Exploring The Rich Heritage

Introduction.

Nestled in the heart of the Philippines, Bohol is a gem laden with historical and cultural treasures. This magnificent island province, brimming with rich heritage and captivating landmarks, beckons history buffs and culture enthusiasts alike. From the iconic Chocolate Hills to the enchanting Philippine tarsiers, Bohol offers a unique blend of natural wonders and historical significance. As we delve into this journey, we’ll explore the corners of Bohol that echo the tales of Filipino resilience and splendor.

The Legacy of Baclayon Church

Baclayon Church, a parish church built in the 18th century and declared a national cultural treasure, stands in the town of Baclayon, a key heritage site in Bohol. Its rich history not only contributes to the cultural and historical fabric of the province of Bohol but also places it among the top heritage structures in the Philippines. The church’s architectural marvels, from its aged stone walls to the intricate religious relics within, narrate the story of the Philippines’ colonial past under Spanish rule. Baclayon Church, located a mere few kilometers from Tagbilaran City, is not just a tourist attraction but a beacon of the enduring faith and history of the region. Learn more about this historical landmark and other Bohol tourist spots  here .

Blood Compact Shrine: A Symbol of Friendship

Journeying a little further, we encounter the Blood Compact Shrine, a national historical landmark commemorating the first treaty of friendship between the Filipinos and Spaniards. This event, led by Datu Sikatuna, a local chieftain, and Spanish explorer Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1565, marks a significant moment in Philippine history. The Blood Compact Shrine, located in Tagbilaran City, offers a glimpse into the diverse history and cultural influences that have shaped the island. The monument, a work of national artist Napoleon Abueva, captures the essence of this historic event, making it a must-visit for those keen to delve into the rich history and culture of Bohol.

The Enigmatic Loboc River

Venturing deeper into Bohol’s heart, the Loboc River presents itself as more than just a picturesque natural attraction. This river has played a pivotal role in the historical and cultural fabric of Bohol. A river cruise, highly recommended for visitors, offers a serene way to appreciate the lush greenery and the traditional Filipino lifestyle along its banks. The river’s course through the island province, passing near towns like Loboc and Dimiao, offers an opportunity to learn about the history and culture of Bohol. Loboc River is not just a body of water; it’s a lifeline that has nurtured generations, a silent witness to the evolution of the Boholano culture. Immerse yourself in this unique experience and explore more about the Loboc River Cruise in Bohol  here .

The Significance of Punta Cruz Watchtower

Located just kilometers from Tagbilaran City, the watchtower is a popular tourist attraction and has been declared a national cultural treasure, underscoring its importance to the historical commission. This historical tower of adobe and limestone is a remarkable example of Spanish colonial architecture. Erected as a defense mechanism against marauding pirates, the watchtower today stands as a symbol of the resilience and strategic ingenuity of the Boholanos during the Spanish colonial period. Its unique hexagonal structure and the scenic view of the Bohol Sea it offers make it a fascinating stop for history buffs and architecture enthusiasts.

The Mystical Charm of Philippine Tarsiers

No exploration of Bohol’s heritage is complete without mentioning the Philippine tarsiers, one of the smallest and oldest primate species on the planet. These tiny creatures are an integral part of Bohol’s ecological and cultural heritage, symbolizing the island’s rich biodiversity. Conservation efforts to protect these mystical beings highlight the Boholanos’ commitment to preserving their natural heritage. Discover more about these enchanting creatures and their habitat in Bohol  here . Their preservation on Panglao Island, part of Bohol Philippines, is crucial for maintaining the ecological balance and cultural heritage of the region.

Unveiling the Heritage of Loboc and Duero Churches

As we delve deeper into Bohol’s ecclesiastical heritage, the Loboc and Duero Churches emerge as epitomes of historical and architectural grandeur. The Loboc Church, renowned for its age-old bell tower and stunning frescoes, represents a fusion of Filipino creativity and Spanish influence. Meanwhile, the Duero Church stands as a silent guardian of Bohol’s past, with its classic Baroque architecture and storied past. These churches are not just places of worship, they are custodians of centuries of history and culture, showcasing the rich spiritual life of the Boholanos.

The town of Loboc, home to one of these stone churches in the Philippines, also hosts the Carlos P. Garcia Memorial Park, featuring the Dagohoy marker, a tribute to the revolutionary leader Francisco Dagohoy.

Exploring Less-Known Sites: From Mt. Carmel Hill to Clarin Ancestral House

Bohol’s historical tapestry is woven with numerous lesser-known sites, each with its unique narrative. Mt. Carmel Hill, with its panoramic views and historical significance, offers a tranquil escape. The Clarin Ancestral House, a preserved relic of the Spanish era, provides a window into the lifestyle of the Boholano elite during colonial times. These sites offer a glimpse into the top heritage and architectural wonders of Bohol, a province celebrated for its UNESCO World Heritage Sites and rich history.

Final Thoughts

Our journey through the historic sites of Bohol reveals not just the landmarks themselves, but the stories and spirits behind them. From the solemn halls of age-old churches to the tranquil waters of the Loboc River, each site contributes to a tapestry that is uniquely Boholano. As we leave these shores, we carry with us a deeper appreciation of Bohol’s rich history and culture, a reminder of the Philippines’ diverse heritage. It’s a call to not only explore but also to preserve these treasures for generations to come.

Loboc and Corella are the two places where you can visit the endangered tarsiers in Bohol. But which is better? Most tours will include the former because of its proximity to the Chocolate Hills. However, the conditions are less than ideal for the tarsiers. Responsible travelers prefer the one in Corella because it provides a more natural environment. The Corella Tarsier Sanctuary is also a foundation that has research and conservation efforts supported by the government so you know they’re legit!

At Balicasag Island you’ll have even more opportunities to observe sea life. Head to the opposite side of the beach (where there are no boats docked) to snorkel with fish, corals, reefs, and turtles. Watch your step because corals are shallow on this part of the beach.

With your rented boat, you might as well visit the neighboring Virgin Island and its sandbar! You can also book a boat tour with Klook which includes all of these destinations and activities.   Check it out here.

Not many know about the existence of Bohol’s rice terraces. Contrary to popular belief, there are quite a few scattered all over the island. The Cadapdapan Rice Terraces is a good choice because it’s near the Can-Umantad Falls and the Canawa Cold Spring if you fancy a visit.

A quick 15-minute trek is involved but it’s easy enough to be accomplished by kids and senior citizens alike. The Cadapdapan Rice Terraces is not as crowded as the other tourist spots in Bohol. If you’re lucky, you might get this view all to yourself!

Bohol Tarsiers: The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary Travel Guide

Did you know that Asia is home to some of the world’s most exotic animals? If you’re looking for an exciting travel destination, consider the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary in Bohol .

Here, you’ll have a chance to see the world’s smallest primate up close and personal! Keep reading for more information on this unique sanctuary.

Table of Contents

About the Tarsier

Tarsiers are one of the oldest mammal species on earth. They’ve been around for 45 million years and are thought to be related to monkeys, apes, and humans.

These creatures are tiny! An adult tarsier is only about 4 to 5 inches tall and weighs less than 5 ounces. Despite their small size, they have big round eyes that help them see in the dark.

Tarsiers are nocturnal animals, which means they’re most active at night. During the day, they usually sleep clinging to branches or the trunks of slim trees.

Although they look cute and cuddly, tarsiers are actually quite delicate creatures. They easily get stressed out and can even die from too much noise or human interaction.

Tarsiers are also slow to reproduce. Females usually only give birth to one baby at a time and they only have one mating season per year. This low reproduction rate makes it difficult for tarsiers to bounce back from population decline.

The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary in Bohol

The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary is located in Corella, Bohol. It’s a protected area that covers more than 160 hectares of forest.

This sanctuary was established in order to help conserve the tarsier population. The sanctuary works to educate the public about these unique creatures and their habitat. They also work to rehabilitate sick or injured tarsiers.

The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary is open to the public and has become a popular eco-tourism destination.

When you visit, you’ll be able to learn all about tarsiers in the exhibition area. There are also conference rooms, a souvenir shop, an audiovisual room, and a library full of tarsier-related information.

The sanctuary offers guided tours led by experienced guides. They’ll take you on a short trek through the forest and help you spot some of these shy creatures.

If you’re lucky, you might even get to see a baby tarsier! Seeing one of these rare animals in person is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Getting There

The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary is located in Corella, Bohol. The best way to get there is by taking a bus, renting a car or motorbike. Once you’re in Corella, follow the signs to the sanctuary.

See the Tarsiers by tour

You can also see the Tarsiers as a part of the Countryside Tour at an affordable price. These trips are quite popular in Bohol, and they’re an excellent way to learn about the island while staying safe. For more information and availability, click the button below:

Best Time to Visit

The best months to visit the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary are from January to May when the weather is dry and cool.

What to Expect

When we visited the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary, we were pleasantly surprised to find out that the sanctuary does not keep the tarsiers in cages. In fact, they have taken great care to preserve the natural habitat of these creatures.

The guides are very knowledgeable about the tarsiers and are more than happy to share information about these fascinating animals.

We highly recommend you take a guided tour of the sanctuary so that you can learn all about the tarsiers and see them in their natural habitat. It lasts 15 to 30 minutes but you’ll be able to see these rare creatures up close and personal.

tourist spots in corella bohol

During the tour, we got to see three tarsiers up close! One turned its head 180 degrees which was creepy but cute! Haha. It was truly an amazing experience. My face hurt from smiling so much.

Ryk and I were giggling like little girls the whole time. We were just so happy to see these rare and beautiful creatures.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, we highly recommend you visit the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary!

2024 BOHOL TOURIST SPOTS AND THINGS TO DO IN BOHOL + ITINERARY

by thepinay solobackpacker | Feb 15, 2024 | Bohol , Itinerary , Philippines , Tourist Spots , Travel Guide | 0 comments

This is a detailed blog of top Bohol tourist spots, and best things to do in Bohol with sample Bohol Itinerary (4 days and 3 nights). Also included here are suggested Bohol side trips and  where to stay in Bohol.

Bohol is like a compressed version of the entire Philippines – powdery white sand beaches, colorful marine life, azure lagoons, pristine waterfalls, mystical caves, sprawling rice terraces and gentle farmlands, carefully-preserved historical churches and age-old Spanish-era houses. That’s why it is no surprise why Bohol seduces thousands of tourists yearly. But what I like about this province is, despite its growing luxury trappings and the crowd it brings, most parts of the island remain tranquil and bucolic, a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle.

If you’re keen on visiting or revisiting Bohol soon, here’s a quick travel guide on the best places to see in Bohol and top things to do in Bohol .

If you’re planning a Cebu-Bohol trip or Bohol-Cebu trip, you can save by getting a Cebu-Bohol Pass, where you can enjoy activities within the 2 cities, ferry, spa and tours. See the link below.

You would have to take a combination of  local bus, jeepney, and tricycle.  I usually DIY whenever I solo backpack, but I opted to join a group tour because doing a DIY Bohol tour is quite a hassle since the public transportation in Bohol is pretty unreliable, this will take up more time. Quite possibly, you won’t be able to cover all the top attractions listed above in a day.

Also, tricycle is pretty expensive in Bohol, even for a short distance ride (5-10 minutes), you will possibly be charged ₱100 ($1.81) to ₱200 ($3.61). It’s like you are renting the entire tricycle. That’s the sad thing about Bohol. I asked some resort workers if they’re charged the same as they are locals, they said yes, unfortunately. I hope the local government can do something about this, perhaps imposed a fare tariff. I’ve read a lot of complaints from other tourists about this.

BOHOL LAND TOUR  – TOP BOHOL TOURIST SPOTS

Chocolate hills.

The picturesque Chocolate Hills is the poster boy of Bohol province attracting thousands of tourists every year. Reportedly, around 1,260 hills to 1,776 hills that are actually conical-shaped limestone mounds clad in grass peppered across a sprawling area. *The cheaper tours don’t typically include lunch and snorkel gear + guide.

3.1. DOLPHIN WATCHING

bohol tourist spotS - ALONA BEACH

  • ALONA BEACH: The most popular and most photographed Bohol beach, where most island hopping in Panglao originate. Still, it remains as one of the top Bohol tourist spots.
  • DUMALUAN BEACH: Another palm-fringed white sand beach in Bohol that is peppered with resorts along its coastline is Dumaluan Beach . Other tourists prefer this beach than Alona Beach because it has lesser crowd. Bohol is oozing with pristine waterfalls that is devoid of tourists, since they’re not typically included in the Bohol Countryside tours or on the list of best Bohol tourist spots.  Here are some of the waterfalls that can be reached from Tagbilaran or Panglao for roughly 30 minutes to 1 hour. They’re not usually on the list of the top Bohol tourist spots, but if you’re into waterfalls and have extra time, it’s worth checking out.

BOHOL TOURIST SPOTS - MAG-ASO FALLS

9.1. MAG-ASO FALLS

Though this waterfall is surrounded by a dense jungle, it’s not that high, only about 8-meter tall. It’s a popular swimming spot for the locals and the natural pool that served as a swimming area has been developed. Take caution when walking down the stairs because it is slippery. If you want to swim here, wear life vest provided by the resort for safety reasons. There are toilets and changing rooms but they’re not that well-maintained.

11. hilltop 360 view park.

BOHOL TOURIST SPOTS - HILLTOP 360 VIEW

This is one of my favorite Bohol tourist spots and viewing area for Chocolate Hills and the mountains of Bohol. It’s actually a park with a cringe design, to be honest, but the scenic view here is unparalleled. We just stumbled upon this place during our drive in Bohol, searching for the government-owned viewing deck, and when we entered and saw the view of its surroundings, it was jaw-dropping.

bohol 38

We went to Hilltop 360 View Park pre-pandemic. So, I’m not sure if it’s still open because I can’t find any updated information about it. Their FB page is inactive. I tried texting their number but no response. I checked social media posts and latest photos I could find was back in 2021. So, if you happen to know if this place is already closed, please leave a comment below or private message me on Instagram. Thank you!

12. ANDA BOHOL BEACHES

About 3 hours’ drive from Tagbilaran and Panglao is Anda, Bohol.  This bucolic town is peppered with palm-fringed white sand beaches devoid of luxury trappings, that makes Anda one of the rising Bohol tourist spots.  It’s a nice place to just relax on the beach and enjoy subtle pleasures like the changing color of the sky and clouds at sunset. Here’s 2 of my favorite beaches in Anda, entrance is free for both beaches.

It’s about 15 minutes away by motorbike. The entrance is not particularly enticing as you will see a man-made swimming area.  But if you go further, you’ll see the undeveloped part under the tree with a clear turquoise water, perfect for a quick dip.

If you have heavy luggages, or you’re traveling with kids or seniors and you just want a hassle-free Bohol Airport transfer to your hotel, you can book a private airport transfer below.  Many luxury and midrange hotels in Bohol also include an aiport pick-up on their package.

Getting around bohol.

Tagbilaran Carmen bus

I already discussed this above. There are 5 ways you can get around Bohol.

  • By bus and jeepney – Buses and jeepney in Bohol are unreliable. They will eat up your time. But if you want to save money, this is the way to go.
  • By tricycle – Tricycle is pretty expensive in Bohol, a short ride will cost you ₱100 ($1.80) to ₱200 ($3.61).
  • By car rental – I’d recommend this if you’re a group of 3-4 persons, you can save more than joining a group tour that charges per person.
  • By scooter rental – You can rent a motorbike or scooter in Panglao or Tagbilaran starting at  ₱300 ($5.41) per day. Gas not included.
  • By group tour or private tour – If you’re a solo traveler or a party of 2, this is a good option, especially if it’s your first time in Bohol since you’ll be able to visit the top tourist spots in a day.

WHERE TO EAT IN BOHOL

I don’t usually plan ahead where to eat when I travel. I dine wherever is nearby when I’m hungry or wherever my feet take me. LOL But if you’re a foodie, here are some restaurants that I’ve personally tried. I’m easy to please when it comes to food though, my palate is only picky when it comes to Japanese food.

BOHOL TOURIST SPOTS - PAPRIKA RESTAURANT FOOD DONATELA RESORT

  • Paprika Restaurant – Latest restaurant I tried in Bohol is Paprika Restaurant at Donatela Resort. They have okay food, lots of choices. I especially love their fish ala plancha, salmon pappilotte, and truffle pasta. I like their complimentary breakfast too, especially the egg with hints of bacon. You can dine at al fresco at Paprika Restaurant and enjoy the view of the endless sea.

IMG-55ea5deed5af0218bc07dcfaef32129a-V

  • Henann Alona Beach Restaurant – For Henann Resort in Alona Beach, they have dinner buffet for ₱898 ($16.20)  every Friday to Sunday, and ₱798 ($14.39) every Monday to Thursday. Unlimited drinks is ₱250 ($451).

bohol

  • Saffron – This is the restaurant inside Amorita Resort. I tried it years ago.
  • Giuseppe Pizzeria and Sicilian Roast
  • Bohol Bee Farm Restaurant
