Mahindra Scorpio-N vs Tata Safari comparison – Old-time rivalry rekindled
An old rivalry rekindled with the launch of the new scorpio-n, is mahindra ready to do what it did 20 years ago when the scorpio was launched we find out..
The new Mahindra Scorpio-N has finally made its world debut after numerous speculations and keeping fans on the edge of their seats. The unveiling of the latest Mahindra Scorpio-N not only has fans excited to finally see the vehicle in flesh but also rekindles an old rivalry between two iconic names in the Indian automotive industry — Scorpio vs Safari.
Since the Scorpio’s market debut in 2002, it immediately rivalled the Tata Safari, as these were the only two ‘modern’ SUVs in the Indian market at the time that offered luxury compared to the Qualis and the Bolero. However, the Mahindra Scorpio was priced much lower (Rs 5.99 lakh ex-showroom) compared to the Tata Safari’s hefty price tag (Rs 8.30 lakh ex-showroom).

Now, with the launch of the new Scorpio-N, Mahindra’s back on the offence. Let’s take a closer look at the new Mandira Scorpio-N vs the Tata Safari’s design, dimensions, features, engine specifications, and more.
Mahindra Scorpio-N vs Tata Safari pricing
The Tata Safari is already on sale, priced at Rs 15.24 lakh onwards (ex-showroom, Delhi). Mahindra, however, has announced prices for the manual transmission versions alone. Bookings will open July 30 onwards, while test drives for the new Scorpio-N will begin starting July 5 in select cities. Also, Mahindra is looking at starting deliveries of the new Scorpio-N from this festive season.
New Scorpio-N vs Safari – Design and dimension
The new Mahindra Scorpio-N has grown in dimensions and is based on a new ladder-frame chassis. It retains its upright stance and a high-set bonnet which made the Scorpio popular with its high stance. The new Scorpio-N features Mahindra’s new grille and logo, a style trickled down from the XUV700. Overall, the new Scorpio-N looks butch and muscular.
Speaking about the Tata Safari, the SUV is based on Land Rover D8 Omega-Arc or the Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced Architecture platform, and similar to the new Scorpio-N, has seen a radical design change over the older-gen Safari. The platform is shared by the Tata Harrier as well, and the overall design is similar, with DRLs taking the traditional headlight spot. The Tata Safari features a sleeker look compared to the Scorpio, however, the large front fascia matches the Scorpio-N in terms of muscle when it comes to design.
The new Mahindra Scorpio-N is wider, taller, and has a longer wheelbase compared to the Tata Safari, giving occupants better headroom, shoulder room, and leg room.
Exterior and interior features – 2022 Mahindra Scorpio-N vs Tata Safari
The new Mahindra Scorpio-N features projector headlamps, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED tail lamps, rounded wheel arches and large wheel wells to accommodate slightly uprated tyres, roof rails, and a lot of chrome accents.
Inside, the new touchscreen infotainment system with AdrenoX connectivity and a Sony 3D surround sound system takes centre stage. The SUV gets an electric sunroof, a digital instrument console, leather-finished seats, steering, and gear lever, automatic climate control, dual-tone finish, silver accents on the dash, steering-mounted controls, and much more.
The Tata Safari gets LED headlamps and tail lights, cornering lights, electrically adjustable and retractable ORVMs, rain-sensing wipers, 18-inch wheels, and roof rails.
Inside, the list of features is quite similar, but the biggest difference is the driving position, as the Scorpio offers a high, upright position, while the Safari’s is a bit relaxed. The list of features includes an electric sunroof, a digital instrument cluster, an 8.8-inch floating infotainment system with smartphone connectivity and connected car tech, a dual-tone finish, a 9-speaker JBL system, and more.
New Mahindra Scorpio-N vs Tata Safari engine specifications
Mahindra offers petrol and diesel power trains with the new Scorpio-N. This is further divided into two diesel engine options and one petrol unit. On the Tata Safari, there is a standard diesel offering.
Both vehicles offer drive modes, however, the new Safari takes it a notch higher with a 4X4 system. This may not look like much for city dwellers, but a much-welcomed feature amongst enthusiasts.
Safety on the Scorpio-N vs Safari
Mahindra and Tata offer the new Scorpio-N and the Safari with 6 airbags, ABS, Hill-descent control, hill start assist, EBD, a tyre pressure monitoring system, ISOFIX child seat anchors, reverse parking camera and sensors, and more.

Scorpio N vs Safari: Exterior, interior & driving experience compared
The black & brown cabin is a more practical option as compared to the beige or white upholstery in the Safari or XUV700.
BHPian NitSat recently shared this with other enthusiasts.
Tata Safari owner’s observations about Scorpio N
Hello friends
I accompanied my brother-in-law and fellow BHPian Cool-Shine to check out the newly launched ScorpioN. He is seriously considering Scorpio N.
I own Tata Safari 2021, and these are my observations about the new Scorpio N, purely in comparison with Safari 2021.
We went to NBS showroom at Malad Link road. There were a couple of potential customers ahead of us. But within 10 -15 minutes, a demo car was made available to us. That was a top-end diesel automatic TWD.
The front is humongous. The bonnet is imposing even in comparison with the Safari. M&M, for a change, has not gone overboard with the design elements and that gives a mature look to the car. Somewhat similar to the Fortuner. They had demo cars in white and black shades. I particularly liked the white shade, which has shiny elements, giving a more premium feel to it.
The side profile is similar to the classic Scorpio.
The rear however looks abrupt and plain. The front two third looks much better than the last one third (which looks like a work in progress). I mean Safari looks elegant and proportionate, from whichever angle you look at it. But looks are purely a subjective parameter.
The black and brown cabin is a more practical option as compared to beige or white upholstery in Safari or XUV. Maintenance should be relatively easy. The cabin height is good.
However, I felt the driver bay was a bit cramped as compared to my Safari. A heavily built person may find it inadequate, especially the seat width. However, the knee room is good in front (unlike the Safari where the left knee constantly touches the central console). The dead pedal is adequate. A lot of soft-touch material on the dashboard.
The infotainment system is definitely a lot sleeker, as compared to the archaic one in Safari. Even though we could not check out all the functions in our ten-minute test drive, but the touch response was very good.
Middle-row seats are equally comfortable in both Safari and Scorpio N. Three average size adults can be easily accommodated in the middle row and leg room is more than adequate.
The third row of Scorpio N was universally panned by everyone, but I found that for short journeys, average size adults can definitely travel. However, absolutely no under-thigh support and minimal leg room will make it the least desired place in Scorpio N. The Safari scores over Scorpio N here, because of the sliding second row, making it more user-friendly.
The sliding second row and separate AC Blower make the third row of Safari a way better proposition than Scorpio N. Also beige interiors, panoramic sunroof make the cabin look more airy and refreshing in Safari.
Driving experience
The driving position is commanding. It offers a complete view of the bonnet. Push the Start button, slot it in D mode and wow. The car just blows you out. The instant power delivery brings a smile to your face.
Compared to the hydraulic steering of Safari, the electronic steering feels so easy to drive, especially at low speeds. It makes manoeuvering and turning a lot easier than Safari.
In a strictly ten minutes, 1.5 km test drive, I could not assess some critical details like highway manners, high-speed stability or brake adequacy. I felt the steering was too light in terms of feedback and sincerely hope that it weighs up proportionately at high speeds. The body roll is well contained in a BOF behemoth of this size, at least at lower speeds.
Scorpio N comes with Micro hybrid technology. So when you brake, the engine comes to a standstill and it restarts as soon as you touch the accelerator.
This feature is similar to the Auto hold function in Safari. But the only difference is, in Safari the auto hold puts the car in the idle position, rather than a complete standstill. But in bumper-to-bumper city traffic, repeated start-stop in Scorpio N will put more burden on the engine and will also reduce the FE considerably I feel.
We all know it’s negligible in both Safari and Scorpio N. However, the bench seat of Scorpio N doesn’t have a 50-50 split. Also when folded, it goes vertical, thereby reducing the boot space a bit more. The boot floor becomes uneven leaving a small trough in the floor, after the bench seat is folded. So loading and unloading the heavy bags will be a bit of a task here. In Safari, the third row folds completely flat (well almost). The side opening tailgate is definitely a lot easier as compared to Safari where the tailgate is heavy and the opening button is not easily accessible.
The build quality, the fit and finish of materials and finesse (or rather lack of it) are equally comparable in both cars.
The Scorpio N is the taller car of the two. The higher GC is evident while getting in and out of the car.
Overall Scorpio N is a very promising vehicle. It’s the best option under thirty big ones, for someone looking for a 4WD, comfortable five-seater with luggage or a seven-seater for short family drives.

Used car resale value: Mahindra Scorpio vs Tata Safari

If you are in the market for a used SUV, this is a good time to look for one as there are many who are upgrading to bigger, newer models. Two of the most popular SUVs in the budget segment are the Mahindra Scorpio and the Tata Safari.
Here we take a look at the used car prices of the two – the Mahindra Scorpio and the Tata Safari, across multiple listings on the Internet collected in our used car database. One thing we have noticed is that between the Mahindra Scorpio and the Tata Safari, there are a higher number of listings for each model year for the Mahindra Scorpio than the Tata Safari. The ratio of Mahindra Scorpios to Tata Safari listings available is nearly 4:1, which is reflective of the new car sales figures as well, where the Scorpio outsells the Safari over three times at least. Also read: Checklist for buying a used Mahindra Scorpio
From the collective database, we’ve got a fairly good indication of the average price of each model year of the Scorpio and the Safari. The prices listed are an average of all prices for that particular model year, across variants – and so it evens out to a mid-variant price. Prices also vary by number of kilometres covered and by city (prices in Bangalore are much higher compared to Delhi).
Prices of Used Mahindra Scorpio (Updated March 2013)
The Mahindra Scorpio was launched in 2002 and has steadily risen in sales since then. The vehicle has been undergoing constant updates as well. It was launched with a 2.6 litre DI diesel engine and a 2 litre petrol engine (which was discontinued after three years). The first upgrade was in 2003, with a change to the diesel engine components. In 2004, the engine was further refined and a few more features were added on, as well as further variants. In end 2005, the new CRDe 2.6 diesel was introduced. In 2006, the Scorpio body got a makeover with distinct styling changes coming in. In 2007, the 2.2 litre M-Hawk diesel engine was introduced. In 2009, the new body styling came in, which is seen on the present Scorpio too. In 2012, it got a change in suspension design.
Mahindra has been refining the Scorpio over the years and has added a number of features, including safety features such as ABS and airbags in the top-end variants. It sells at least nine different variants now in 4×2 and 4×4 versions.
Prices of the first generation Mahindra Scorpio are relatively low, at Rs. 2.2 lakh for a 2002 model going up to Rs. 3.54 lakh for a 2003. Post 2006 models fetch much better resale value, with prices for a 2006 model averaging over Rs. 5 lakh. A three year old, 2010 model Mahindra Scorpio is available for about Rs. 8.5 lakh (which is more than the price of an entry-level new Scorpio). New Mahindra Scorpio prices range between Rs. 7.8 lakh to Rs. 12.21 lakh ex-showroom. Meanwhile, check out our Mahindra Scorpio: Used Car Buyers’ Guide for great, comprehensive advice on buying one right!
Mahindra Scorpio resale values
2002-2003: Rs. 2.20 lakh – Rs. 3.54 lakh
2004-2005: Rs. 3.40 lakh – Rs. 4.06 lakh
2006-2007: Rs. 5.06 lakh – Rs. 5.74 lakh
2008–2009: Rs. 6.29 lakh – Rs. 7.59 lakh
2010–2011: Rs. 8.49 lakh – Rs. 8.90 lakh
Prices of used Tata Safari (Updated March 2013)
The Tata Safari is older to the Mahindra Scorpio by four years. Launched in 1998, the original Tata Safari came with a 2-litre diesel engine that put out 90 bhp of power. This engine was upgraded in 2004 only to a 3-litre Dicor engine in the interim, before the launch of the 2.2 Dicor engine in 2008, and which continues in the present Tata Safari as well. There was a petrol variant of the Tata Safari on sale with a 2.1 litre engine for a couple of years but it was discontinued due to poor sales. The Tata Safari hasn’t had as many refreshes as the Mahindra Scorpio. However, the latest Tata Safari Storme, launched in 2012, was its biggest change till date. Also read: Checklist for buying a used Tata Safari
Tata has been making fewer changes in the Tata Safari over the years compared to Mahindra. It has fewer variants as well, with only five variants of the Dicor on sale till recently, while the Storme has only about four variants.
Unfortunately, when it comes to resale value the Tata Safari does not hold its value as much as the Mahindra Scorpio. Mechanically, the Tata Safari, especially after the 2.2 litre variant was introduced is quite reliable. The latest Safari has more power than the Scorpio and it has always enjoyed a space advantage. Still, in the market, the perception of Tata service and a history of earlier niggling troubles have resulted in the Safari fetching a lower resale value. For example, a 2006 model Safari has an average price of Rs. 4 lakh, compared to Rs. 5.06 lakh for the Mahindra Scorpio. A 2010 model has an average price of Rs. 6.40 lakh compared to Rs. 8.49 lakh for the Mahindra Scorpio, and this when the Tata Safari is actually more expensive than the Scorpio when new. Prices of the Tata Safari (new) range between Rs. 8.32 lakh to Rs. 13.68 lakh ex-showroom.
Tata Safari resale value
2002-2003: Rs. 1.5 lakh – Rs. 2.65 lakh
2004-2005: Rs. 2.75 lakh – Rs. 3.5 lakh
2006-2007: Rs. 4 lakh – Rs. 4.7 lakh
2008-2009 : Rs. 5.18 lakh – Rs. 6.52 lakh
2010-2011 : Rs. 6.38 lakh – Rs. 7.86 lakh
If you are a seller, you would be better off owning a Mahindra Scorpio, as it would fetch you better resale value. However, if you are a buyer looking for a good deal, a used Tata Safari, post 2008 models especially, would be a better deal compared to a Mahindra Scorpio. Also read: Buying used SUVs in India

All-New Mahindra Scorpio vs Old: Top 5 Things to Know
Would like to know, what the All-New Mahindra Scorpio is all about? Here are ‘Top 5 Things That You Should Know’ between the New Scorpio and the old one.
Marketing has finally started. After months of testing and millions of spy shots later, Mahinda & Mahindra has finally released a teaser of the All-New Scorpio . Expected to be launched in June to celebrate 20 years of the iconic nameplate, the third-generation model will sport updates to its styling, technology and engines. Here are five key differences between the 'old and the New Scorpio'.
1. All-New Mahindra Scorpio vs Old - Exterior Styling:
While the car retains its boxy shape and ladder frame construction, it gets a more rounded design. The new model's front end features a new multi-slatted front grille with chrome embellishments in place of the old 7-slat grille, similar to Jeep models. The spy shots suggest that the company has dropped the hood scoop and extended the nose to provide the SUV with a cleaner look. The old model already came with LED headlamps and taillights, but the new units take it a step further. We can also expect the new model to feature a dynamic lighting sequence similar to the one seen on the Mahindra XUV700 . Moving away from the design of the current generation, the alloy wheels get a fresh look with diamond cutting and a two tone finish. Completing the front look, the 2022 model has a reprofiled bumper with a chunky bash plate and a C-shaped fog lamp housing.
2. All-New Mahindra Scorpio vs Old - Interior styling:
Unlike the industrial design of the current cabin, the new model will have an upmarket feel with a large central infotainment screen along with a digital drivers display. The new dashboard design seems to take inspiration from the XUV700 and will offer additional connected car features. According to the spy shot, the 2022 model will also be the first Scorpio to receive a sunroof and an e-parking brake. Mahindra has also paid close attention to interior feel, the hard plastics found on the current generation Scorpio are replaced with leather and soft touch materials. The new cabin will get full leather seats with a new dual-tone brown and walnut colour upholstery instead of the half fabric seats seen on the 2nd generation model. Further, Mahindra will ditch the side facing seats on the last row for a bench seat and captain seats in the front two rows. This allows for better utilisation of the boot space when the last row of seats are not in use.
3. All-New Mahindra Scorpio vs Old – Engines Options:
One of the most significant changes comes in the form of the powertrain. The Scorpio will ditch its 2179cc MHAWK diesel engine in favour of a larger 2184cc mill. The new model will also be offered with a 2.0-litre petrol engine. Both these engines are currently doing duty on the New Mahindra Thar and the XUV700. In terms of gearbox option, the company will continue to offer a 6-speed manual along with a new and efficient 6-speed automatic.
Like the current model, the 2022 Scorpio will be offered with a 4X4 transferase and low range. The new 4X4 unit will be more efficient than the one seen on the outgoing model.
4. All-New Mahindra Scorpio vs Old – Technology:
To start, the current generation Scorpio is a well-equipped vehicle. It is among the few SUVs that offer features like rain-sensing wipers, dual front airbags, static bending beams and more. But for the new model, we can expect the company to provide features like 6 airbags, a 360-degree camera, Hill-Hold and Hill Descent Control, 3D Sony audio and more. We can also presume that the homegrown carmaker will provide some ADAS functions like radar-guided cruise control and lane-keep assist to make the SUV future proof. We believe that the added equipment and more efficient construction will help the 2022 Mahindra Scorpio fair better if put through a crash safety test.
5. All-New Mahindra Scorpio vs Old – Launch Date and Pricing in India:
The third generation of the Scorpio is expected to be launched in June, 20 years after the first generation was introduced. The current generation Scorpio price starts at Rs 13.5 lakhs (ex-showroom), but with added technology and better styling we expect Mahindra to price the new Scorpio between Rs 15 lakhs to Rs 20 lakhs (ex-showroom). Once launched, the new model will rival the likes of Hyundai Alcazar , Tata Safari and the MG Hector Plus in its category.
So with the launch nearing, are you excited about this SUV? Will the added technology and a new design peak your interest? Let us know in the comment section below.

Mahindra has launched its 2022 Scorpio N SUV in India. The new iteration of the iconic SUV is filled with lots of technical & design changes. While the potential customers eagerly wait to get their hands on the new SUV; we compare it with the old Scorpio. Here, we showcase to you the top 5 differences between the old Scorpio vs the Scorpio N.

Design & Dimensions
The major difference that is visible instantly is the size & dimensions of the new Scorpio N. The new SUV is made to stand apart from the crowd & it sure does that. Badged by Mahindra as 'BigDaddy of SUVs'; it indeed is.
While the length, width, and height of the new Scorpio are bigger; the ground clearance is less in comparison to the old gen. This is due to the revised rule of measurements for the body dimensions. The overall design is also completely new but the butch looks retained.
New Scorpio N has a taller stance, as well as muscular body lines, making it look more attractive. However, the rear design is completely new and we feel it might take some time to get used to it.
Engine & Gearbox
The major difference is under the hood between the two SUVs. The Scorpio N uses the same 2.2-mHawk turbo-diesel from the old Scorpio. But, this engine is now reworked to churn more power & torque figures.
Not just this, but the gearbox is also new and seems to have carried from the XUV 700 . There is an option of a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox with the new Scorpio N. While the old Scorpio comes with a 5-speed manual/6-speed manual transmission only.

Specifications
In terms of specifications, the difference between both the generations of the Scorpio is humongous. The new Scorpio N uses a patented tech for suspension called Pentalink Watt's Linkage. The ride quality of the new Scorpio N is class-apart & it is something that none of the Mahindra SUVs can provide until now.
The comfort levels are attributed due to large wheels, EPS wheel, and all-four disc brakes. Additionally, the new Scorpio N comes with a standard RWD drivetrain & 4WD option as well.
The new Scorpio N is a big jump in terms of every aspect. Considering the features list, the 2022 Scorpio N stands apart from the crowd as well as the old Scorpio. Even the sunroof is a big addition that increases the cabin ambiance multiple folds.
With the latest add-ons like the new touchscreen, dual-tone leather interior, dual-zone climate control, captain seats, & SONY music system; the new Scorpio is miles ahead in comfort and convenience from the old Scorpio.

Safety is another major area where the difference between the new Scorpio N and the old Scorpio widens. The addition of 6 airbags, ESC, Hill Hold Assist, Hill Descent Assist, all-4 disc brakes, & LED projector headlights + foglights; have made the new Scorpio N much safer than before.
Speaking of the rivals, Tata Safari remains the main competitor of the Scorpio brand. The updated Scorpio has many things to offer that lead it above the competition.
Our review of the 2022 Scorpio N will go live soon; so please stay tuned here. Also, do comment down below and shower your thoughts about the new differences between the old Scorpio vs the new Scorpio N.
