The best flight apps help you score a deal with a few swipes on your smartphone.

While a looming recession could reduce demand for travel and bring prices down, that doesn’t help those who want to fly right now.

While inflation may be cooling nationwide, travelers are likely to still face some sticker shock when booking flights for this year’s vacations. As of March 2023, airline fares were up 17.7% compared to the year before, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics .

Industry experts point to a variety of factors pushing prices higher: ongoing inflation , oil prices and a lack of airplanes and pilots to fly them. While a looming recession could reduce demand for travel and bring prices down, that doesn’t help those who want to fly right now.

Fortunately, there are a number of apps designed to help you find cheap flights . The best flight apps offer features that will alert you to price drops, let you search for cheaper travel times or help you find special pricing not found elsewhere.

Try one of these discount airfare apps and services that frequent flyers say work for them:

  • Skyscanner.
  • Dollar Flight Club.
  • Google Flights.
  • ExpertFlyer.
  • Your Favorite Airline’s App.

A good flight alert program can simplify the process of finding a deal. These services send emails or notifications whenever there is discounted airfare available to selected destinations, and Going – formerly known as Scott's Cheap Flights – is a favorite source for flight alerts. The company notes that most deals are 40% to 90% off normal prices.

“(It) is one of the best apps to use when searching for cheap flights,” says Alex Miller, CEO of UpgradedPoints.com. “It can narrow down what city you're located in and then alert you when a qualifying airfare, based on criteria that you set, is found.”

Users can choose from three tiers of service. Free limited accounts receive alerts about deals on international economy flights. Premium plans cost $49 a year and include international and domestic economy flights as well as weekend getaways and mistake fares from chosen airports. Frequent globetrotters may want to spring for the elite plan that provides alerts for economy , business and first-class flights as well as mistake fares from all U.S. airports. It costs $199 per year.

Skyscanner has a free flight app that is compatible with both Apple and Android devices and provides pricing alerts when a good deal becomes available. The app is easy to use and allows you to set alerts for specific dates or routes.

Travelers can also use Skyscanner's calendar and charts to compare hundreds of flights for both international and domestic destinations. The app highlights flights that emit less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, lets users mix and match flights from different carriers and offers a search option that allows travelers to find the best prices for flights originating from their chosen airport.

When you find a flight you like, Skyscanner will direct you to a third-party booking app to make the purchase. In addition to flights, users can search for hotels and car rentals using Skyscanner.

Dollar Flight Club

Dollar Flight Club is similar to Going, but it structures its plans differently.

Free accounts get alerted to deals from one departure airport while premium members can choose four departure airports for deal alerts on domestic and international economy flights. Premium membership costs $69 a year. There is also a Premium Plus+ membership that runs $169 per year and includes premium economy and business class deals as well.

The service says booking a single flight using Dollar Flight Club can provide a return of 10 times your investment, and it provides additional discounts to Premium and Premium Plus+ members. With Premium Perks, members get access to special discounts from partners such as Babbel and Scribd.

Google Flights

While not currently available as an app, Google Flights offers a simple online interface that allows you to search for flights to specific airports and then see a calendar view that shows when flights will be cheapest. It also has a price graph that allows you to see pricing trends over time.

“You can plug in your start city and then let Google Flights make suggestions on where to fly from there based upon the cost of airfare,” Miller says. That’s a useful tool for travelers with flexibility.

Once you find the right airfare, you'll need to find and book it directly with the carrier or through a third-party booking service.

Hopper says it can predict future travel prices with 95% accuracy and, as a result, saves users an average of $65 on their flights. Users can watch certain flights and be notified when prices drop to their expected lowest level. Hotel and car rental deals can also be found on Hopper, and everything can be booked through the app.

That’s one reason it’s among the best flight apps, according to Kevin Raposo, founder of KnowTechie. He used it to book a vacation to Saint Lucia and says it couldn’t have been easier. “You can do it all at the push of a button,” he notes.

Those booking through Hopper can earn Carrot Cash Rewards of 1% back on flights, which can be redeemed on future bookings. For those just browsing on the app – which is free and available for Apple and Android devices – Hopper will color code flights using green, yellow and red to indicate which flights are most and least expensive.

Compatible with Android and Apple devices, Kiwi promises its app will provide travelers with exclusive offers and prices. It searches for the best rates from all available airlines to piece together the lowest-priced itinerary.

The free app also offers the opportunity to search for all deals from a specific airport, which can be handy for those who are ready to take a vacation but don't have a particular destination in mind. Within the app, users can get price alerts, access mobile boarding passes and view airport maps.

Kiwi also offers travel hacks that can save money, such as bookings with “hidden cities” and a Nomad tool for those who want to visit multiple cities. What's more, the app offers other travel services such as destination guides and the location of Wi-Fi hotspots.

ExpertFlyer

The ExpertFlyer website won’t win any design awards. It looks like something from the early days of the internet and even references now-obsolete Blackberry devices. But frequent flyers say that shouldn’t deter you.

“ExpertFlyer is another great tool, though admittedly it's for the more advanced flyer,” Miller says. “Rather than perform ordinary searches to uncover good airfare deals, you can set alerts and search by specific inventory on flights.”

That means that this service is intended for those who know where, when and with which airline they want to fly. If you have a specific route that you travel frequently, ExpertFlyer can help you find discounted fares. A free version provides seat alerts while a paid pro subscription, which starts at $4.99 per month, comes with additional features such as the ability to search for awards and upgrades.

Airfare apps aren’t only for those booking vacations. Business travelers and their employers are often searching for a good deal as well. That’s the niche Onriva fills.

“We’ve built a platform to bring everything in one place (so) you don’t have to hop from site to site,” says Onriva founder and CEO Vajid Jafri. “This has never existed before.”

While other apps may make it possible to book from multiple companies, they typically serve as a digital travel agency. With Onriva, all bookings are made directly with an airline or other vendor through the app’s platform. Onriva also provides customer service for these bookings for added convenience. The app brings together travel options from more than 2 million suppliers and then uses artificial intelligence to learn user preferences and make recommendations.

Anyone with a business email address can sign up for an Onriva account. Those who want access to advanced features – including cash back on bookings – will need to sign up for the premium service that costs $96 per year.

Your Favorite Airline’s App

In your search for cheap flights , don’t overlook your favorite airline’s app. Booking direct can sometimes be the best option, according to Sandra McLemore, a travel TV host and travel industry expert.

“While these (third-party) apps may feel convenient and more user-friendly than other online booking options, buyer beware,” McLemore says. If you buy your tickets through that third-party app, you may find it difficult to receive customer service should any issues arise. “An airline will send you right back to the app or online booking engine to receive service,” McLemore explains.

By focusing your spending with a specific airline, you may find it easier to accumulate frequent flyer miles which can be redeemed for free flights and save you more money in the long run.

Anytime & anywhere feature is back!!

UPDATE: you changed it back! Must’ve been doing A/B testing or something and I got in the unlucky group. Back to 5 stars! . Latest update killed off the best part of the app. When you select “explore anywhere/anytime” it gives you a list of prices to several locations, but then no longer brings you to those flights. If I see a $99 flight to Denver for example (after using the anytime/anywhere criteria) I used to be able to click on it and see the exact dates that $99 flight was for & then browse other dates with low prices to that destination. Now, I’m brought to an info page on the city with a button to “find flight deals” and the date is arbitrarily filled in and it’s not even the date with the cheapest prices. Please go back to the previous version! I would honestly use that feature to find my next destination! Just find a cheap flight to someplace I hadn’t been to without having to spend hours browsing and looking for a good deal.

Priceline has better deals unfortunately

Initially I got great deals through this app. That’s how they lure you in. I have used it now for 2 years and I can honestly say this with confidence. The first 2 flights I booked I got great deals! I literally got 2 round trip tickets for $40 each traveling to different locations. That was within months of each other. After that the luck was gone and I have never had such a deal since. It’s been about a year and a half and I have yet to buy another flight using this app. I spend lots of time comparing flights and you can get better deals on Priceline after your 2 “lucky” flights. This app usually has the highest prices compared to any of the others out there. Use for your first 2 flights then delete it!! It’s not worth it. Download Priceline and thank me later!! ;) Also the new version has started linking to third party websites once you get to the dates and flight you want. The third party sites are screechy to say the least. Once you choose the flights you want the price increases and you can’t get back to the original price. This was once a great app but has now lost all cool points. I haven’t used it in a year and a half since I’m finding the best deals on Priceline or going straight to the business site for rental cars. Once you buy your flight through Priceline they will send you codes for better deals on cars/hotels. Thank me later ;)

Developer Response ,

Hi there, thanks for your review. At Skyscanner, we always aim to show you the most comprehensive results we can, so that you can choose the flight that suits you best. We show prices on behalf of travel providers, rather than setting the prices ourselves, and we display the price exactly as it is set on the travel providers page at that time. If you have seen better prices somewhere else, we'd be keen to investigate this further. Feel free to get in touch with the details of your search, and a member of the team will get in touch with you as soon as possible. -Skyscanner Support

Great app, but needs work with some accessibility features for Voiceover users

Great and useful app. It has a lot of different airlines available to you, including Jet Blue, Spirit, Frontier, United, Delta, American, etc. that I've seen so far. I'm not sure if they have Alaska as I haven't looked at enough flights to fully be aware. The things Ive noticed, though, in terms of accessibility are with the calendar, and also with looking at further flight details. The date of departture and arrival get lost a bit, and it's not entirely intuitive when you're trying to sort out what's what. When you're entering in departure and returning dates, the months are labeled, but the actual days are blank buttons. It's doable since you can just count in your head, but it's a little irritating. That said, plenty of other airline apps are way worse with their calendar accessibility. So, that said, this isn't horrible. When you're booking a one way flight, though, Voiceover responds beautifully to the calendar and suddenly reads the numbers and days of the week on the calendar. Bizarre, but I'm not complaining. Just wish it could also be sorted for the round trip calendars.

7 flight booking apps every traveler should download

Lori Zaino

Jumping on a fantastic deal you saw on The Points Guy, using those hard-earned points and miles for an incredible award redemption and hunting for low fares on Google Flights are usually our preferred methods of booking travel — but you may also be able to find a great deal or route by using an app, which could offer valuable perks such as exclusive pricing, flight status updates, trip inspiration, airport maps and more when booking or researching your next trip. So check out (and prepare to download) this list of go-to, TPG-approved apps for searching and booking airfare.

Flexible travelers looking to save cash should immediately download Hopper. Once you enter your home airport and preferred destination, the farecasting app uses years of historical data to generate a calendar of the coming year with dates color-coded to reflect prices. Days in green are generally the cheapest, followed by light orange, coral and red — the latter of which are the most expensive to fly. Hopper (which you can also use to book hotels) has a Watch This Trip feature that sends you alerts if the price changes, and lets you know if the price is the same to fly nonstop. You can also choose to exclude basic fares from the results. But arguably the most useful feature is the price predictor, which explains if and when the price will rise and by approximately how much, allowing travelers to decide whether or not to book or wait. Now, if only Hopper could do the same for award-ticket availability! Download Hopper for free on iTunes and Google Play .

Skyscanner is great for travel inspiration, as it has special sections for categories such as solo travel, quick getaways and kid-free vacations. It also has recommendations and deals for last-minute trips, providing you with pricing for a variety of destinations. The app pulls in the best deals by month and includes photos of each city, making sure you get a solid dose of wanderlust as you organize your trip. If you happen to know your destination and dates already, the app's clear, concise interface makes it easy to see prices and itineraries. The Best Deals by Month feature is particularly fun, allowing travelers to find the coolest and most affordable destinations at any time of year. Once you select a flight, you'll be transferred to the airline's website or an online travel agency to book. You can also use Skyscanner's app to shop for rental cars and hotels. Download Skyscanner for free on iTunes and Google Play .

For travelers who want to explore new destinations and book everything in one place, you can book your flight, hotel, car rental and even activities and tours using Kiwi.com . In the app, you can also click on the specific airports you'll be flying into and out of to locate the lounges, ATMs and luggage storage areas. Kiwi.com has thought of everything -- there's even a special feature that lets you measure your bags with your phone camera. And booking flights is fairly simple: You can choose from round-trip, one-way, multicity and the special Nomad feature, which has interesting flight itineraries mapped out for you in packs, like the Tour South America option, which has a customizable itinerary including three- to five- nights in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; three- to five- nights in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and three- to five nights in Santiago, Chil. Download Kiwi.com for free on iTunes and Google Play .

Using a hip chipmunk find an airfare deal may seem weird, but the Hipmunk app really simplifies trip planning, with user-friendly charts that filter your journey by price, time of day, airline, length of layover and even whether or not your aircraft has Wi-Fi. The app also tracks flight prices and notifies you when it's the best time to buy. The Discover feature offers deals on destinations like Canada or Mexico, and also provides inspiration for trips based on your interests, like the nightlife or foodie-favorite cities. Once you've booked a flight (the app will transfer you to airline websites and OTAs), you can also reserve a hotel or rental car. Download Hipmunk for free on iTunes and Google Play .

This app is great for the initial destination and fare search, especially if you know you want to go on an affordable vacation but aren't sure where to go. Instead of searching Instagram hashtags, check out the Explore tab on the app, which gives you a selection of weekend getaways or destinations like Japan or Italy to check out. The search function populates nearby destinations starting at the lowest price. Once you've explored a bit, you can save your favorite places to your Hitlist tab, which shows all your preferred spots. Then, the app notifies you of price drops for your dream destinations. You can also sign up for a premium version of the app starting at $3 a month, which gives you access to a personal travel planner and members-only fares. Download Hitlist for free on iTunes and Google Play .

Like some of the other apps on the list, Momondo is another airfare metasearch app that finds you the most affordable airfare and then reroutes you to other websites to actually book. However, Momondo's main emphasis is clear: cheap fares, not travel inspiration. The app searches over 1,000 different airlines and online travel agencies to find you the best price, also offering a price calendar so travelers with flexible dates can identify the absolute cheapest day to fly. The site locates the fares and will autofill your information for booking once you're rerouted. You can also use the app to track your flight status or measure your suitcases. Download Momondo for free on iTunes or Google Play .

Kayak isn't new or groundbreaking, but it's a dependable flight search app you can count on to find affordable airfare. The airline pulls in information from a number of airlines, and when you click on your desired flight, it offers options for booking on the airline itself or through other OTAs. And in many instances, you're quoted mobile-only rates that are unique to the app. Similar to Momondo (the two apps are owned by the same company), you can also book hotels and car rentals, track the status of your flight and measure your bag. The app allows you to add flights, hotels and car rentals to your watchlist, and will send you alerts when prices drop. Newer features allow you to create destination guides to share recommendations with other users, and play a game where you jump over virtual obstacles in an airport -- the perfect way to deal with boredom when your flight is delayed. Download Kayak for free on iTunes or Google Play .

travel apps for flights

It's easy to waste precious time filling in booking info only to realize that your chosen website has inaccurate pricing or hidden fees.

As a passionate world traveler on a budget, I've tried all the apps and services over the years. The below apps stand out for their upfront costs, reliable and communicative customer service, and noteworthy features that help you choose the fastest, cheapest days to fly.

If you have wanderlust but don't have a specific destination in mind, many apps include interactive maps that allow the user to explore travel options across the globe.

Because of the finicky and volatile nature of booking prices, however, you shouldn't set up shop with only one of these apps or services. To truly find the best flight deals, you've got to dig and compare.

Here are the best travel apps to download to take the headache out of booking flights and save money.

Skyscanner began as a small Scottish startup and bloomed into a global service. It is now owned by the international online travel agency Trip.com and is highly regarded by thousands of app users.

Skyscanner app

It has expert functionality, like an interactive price chart. This shows the booker the precise day and time to book for the lowest price possible. You can find the cheapest trip available if your travel dates are flexible.

This comes in handy when you know you need to fly to a certain state, perhaps to visit friends and family, but don't mind picking an airport in a city close by to save some cash.

If you know you want to get away and are not picky about where you're going, the app includes an explore everywhere feature that shows you cheap flights to popular destinations.

Skyscanner's 'explore everywhere' feature

If your work schedule is flexible and you're unsure which day is the best to depart, use the feature whole month to check ticket prices for each day that month.

Skyscanner's other perk strives to reflect the final price you will pay by credit card — no hidden fees.

Additionally, Skyscanner allows you to book your hotel room and rental car.

Skyscanner does not require a subscription and is user friendly. It offers both an app and web browser version. The app is compatible with iOS 14 or later and is a free 229.8 MB download from the app store.

TravelPerk was developed in Barcelona and focuses primarily on traveling for business. The array of features offered is what sets TravelPerk apart from other apps.

TravelPerk app

Flight search engines and google flights often box you into booking with the same airline or partner airline throughout each leg of your trip.

With TravelPerk, you can package all your tickets under the same trip, consolidating all your travel plans in one place.

TravelPerk allows the user to consolidate travel itinerary in one place

Another perk is that Travelperk includes rail travel. This will come in handy if you're traveling a public transportation-friendly continent like Europe.

While traveling in Switzerland, using TravelPerk to channel the SBB train app worked like a dream.

TravelPerk is also very customer-support-friendly. The average wait time to speak to a live representative is fifteen seconds — 24 hours a day.

Instead of paying monthly for a subscription you might only use here and there, TravelPerk makes it so that the user only pays to use their software in the months they book a trip, with no hidden fees.

TravelPerk is compatible with iOS 15 or later, has starter (free), premium, and pro versions to suit your needs, and is a 135.9 MB download from the app store. TravelPerk is also available as a subscription service online. To view current subscription pricing, check out TravelPerk.com .

If you've ever missed a connection due to delays or cancellations and have found yourself stranded in a strange city for the night, Kiwi takes the hassle out of negotiating with the airline for a refund.

Kiwi app

Kiwi stands out among other apps because it searches for each segment of your trip separately. For example, suppose your international trip plans require a stop anyway, and you don't mind using two separate airlines to reach your destination. In that case, Kiwi will direct you to the airlines with the lowest fares for separate bookings.

Kiwi has a clean, interactive interface that makes it easy to plan your trip.

Kiwi's clean user interface makes it easy to book your next trip

Kiwi will send you your boarding passes 24 hours before your flight and will note any luggage specifications beforehand, such as luggage weight limits.

Because you might not be traveling with the same airline to your destination, if a flight delay, cancellation, or schedule change should compromise your connecting flight, Kiwi guarantees an alternative flight or refunds the price for the unused ticket.

However, you must inform Kiwi as soon as you know of any of the above situations. Then, email them a receipt for the new flight within 14 days of rebooking.

Kiwi is compatible with iOS 14 or later and is a free, 86.3 MB download from the app store. If you prefer to use the web browser version, it can be accessed at Kiwi.com .

Momondo has an easy-to-navigate user interface with a streamlined flight and hotel search function.

Momondo app

One of this app's many perks is fetching the most cost-effective and fastest flights and displaying them in convenient tabs at the top. Normally, their reasoning behind the "best" flight combines a cheap flight paired with the most expedient flight times.

Like Skyscanner, if you know you'd like to get away but aren't sure where, the app has an interactive map that displays flight prices from your home airport to various places around the globe. Additionally, it has a 'budget' feature that shows applicable plane tickets for every set budget.

Momondo allows the user to set a budget to look for applicable, potential trips

Momondo is compatible with iOS 14 or later and is a free, 102.9 MB download from the app store. If you prefer to use the web browser version, visit Momondo.com .

You've likely heard of Kayak before.

It is an all-encompassing app for travel that finds the best deals for hotels, rental cars, and flights. It also includes the cheapest flight and hotel combo deals from travel agencies, although I've found it's often cheaper to book these separately than to bundle.

Kayak app

Kayak also has a cool price monitoring feature. It will ping your phone when your tracked flight has changed in price.

Another notable feature is that after you input your number of bags and whether you'd prefer a nonstop or layover flight, it accurately represents the final cost, even if you are flying with two different airlines.

Finally, Kayak includes an interactive app that shows current flight prices across the globe, making it one of the best travel apps around.

Kayak's interactive map makes it easy to spot a good deal across the globe

It is highly rated in the app store, with hundreds of thousands of reviews and a great standing of 4.8.

Kayak is compatible with iOS 14 or later and is a free, 122.1 MB download from the app store. If you prefer to use the web browser version, head over to Kayak.com .

Other services: Google flights

Google flights doesn't have an app, but it deserves an honorable mention here.

Google flights

After you plug in your desired trip duration, Google flights features a noteworthy calendar and bar graph option that displays your cheapest options to depart and return.

Google flights has a nifty calendar feature that shows the user the cheapest dates to fly

All you need to do is tap your departure and return dates to find the cheapest flying options.

Recap: steps to find the cheapest flights with the best travel apps

  • Plug in your departure date and destination using Skyscanner or Google flights. Set up email alerts and wait a few days to see if flight costs are decreasing or increasing
  • When you're ready and think you've got a good price, double-check the fares using one of the above apps
  • Do one last price check utilizing the airline's app or website
  • Voila — by now, you've gleaned enough comprehensive data to book the cheapest route thanks to the best travel apps!

Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilizing the best travel tools.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was March. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and June the most expensive.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying non-stop is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than non-stop flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.com/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible "weekend" or "month" search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United States over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Tuesday. For international flights, Thursday had the cheapest tickets on average.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

The 17 Best Travel Apps to Help You Make the Most of Your Travels

After using hundreds—maybe even thousands—of travel apps, I’ve figured out a workflow that’s simple and straightforward. It uses the fewest number of travel apps possible and it will help you to stay on top of where you’re going and what’s happening around you.

The 17 Best Travel Apps to Help You Make the Most of Your Travels

Traveling can be a complicated endeavor.

From keeping track of bookings and finding local sights, to currency conversions and translations, staying on top of what’s going on, where you’re going, and what you’re supposed to be doing can be tricky.

Especially with a constant onslaught of new travel apps, it can be hard to cut through the noise and figure out which are not only the best travel apps but the easiest to use.

After five years of travel on six different continents , and hundreds of tools and travel apps later (maybe even thousands), I’ve trimmed the fat, uninstalled the apps that claim to be the best (but aren’t), and learned what the best travel apps truly are—the ones that are tried and true, and have withheld the test of time.

These travel apps will help you to stay organized and on top of where you’re going and what’s happening around you.

The Best Travel Apps for Booking Flights

Booking a flight is the first step to any trip, and though most people will only check the major sites like Expedia, Priceline, and Travelocity, it’s well worth doing your due diligence, especially for the sake of saving money.

What’s often even more important, though, is user experience. Some apps are clunky and confusing and don’t make finding and booking flights very easy.

There are a lot of booking apps, but I steer clear of most of them, usually relying on my core group of three. With these travel apps, I know that 90% of the time, I’m finding the best deal on flights.

Skyscanner is one of the best travel apps for booking flights

Skyscanner lets you search from city to city, and from country to country, to find the best deals on flights. Got some free time, want a getaway, but not too concerned about where you go? Use the flexible search to search for flights from a particular destination to anywhere.

As well as being able to search for specific dates, you can check the prices across a whole month. Skyscanner can find some of the best deals by combining carriers for different legs of a journey. This may mean, however, that you need to book separate flights, use a travel agency, and/or collect your bags and check-in again between flights.

momondo is another one of the best travel apps for booking flights

Momondo is similar to Skyscanner, in that it compares numerous airlines and travel agencies on a variety of routes to get you from A to B. There is also the option to search for flights to anywhere, and you can opt to also search for airports near your original choice (if a final destination is specified).

Google Flights

Google Flights doesn't have a mobile app but it has a great mobile interface

Google Flights is another top comparison site for flight tickets. As well as performing basic searches, it also offers a wide range of features to make planning your travels easy. If you’re not yet ready to commit to making a booking, you can monitor different flights.

You can get notifications when prices are likely to increase on a particular route, letting you get in there and book a flight before the price jumps. You can see prices across a region, be shows which flight combinations offer the best value for money (taking into account layovers and so on) and can automatically see alternatives, such as date or time changes, that will give you a saving.

Google Flights doesn’t have a downloadable mobile app but the website does have a fantastic mobile interface, which is just as good.

The Best Travel Apps for Booking Accommodation

I’m a terrible planner, so when it comes to accommodation, I don’t often book in advance. Depending on the type of accommodation I’m looking for, I use one of the following options:

Booking.com

Booking.com has one of the best mobile apps for finding accommodation when traveling

Booking.com has properties to suit most budgets and travel styles, with accommodations located all around the world. There are numerous filters, allowing you to find exactly what you’re looking for. Some properties do not require a deposit or advance payment, with flexible cancellation terms. Do check, however, as the booking terms are not the same for all. If you become a member there are more potential savings to be made.

Hostelworld

Hostelworld is the best app for finding hostels around the world

A top choice for budget travelers, Hostelworld is ideal for finding beds in dorm rooms. If you love the social aspect of staying in a hostel, but prefer to have some privacy at bedtime, you can also search for private rooms in hostels.

HotelTonight

If you’re taking an impromptu trip or have left booking a place to stay to quite late in the day, HotelTonight is great for finding last-minute deals. No property wants empty rooms for a night, so unsold rooms are advertised, often with savings, on Hotel Tonight. While there may not be so many options to choose between, you can be assured that any listings are at top-notch places. All participant accommodations are screened by HotelTonight. You can search for somewhere to stay in a variety of global cities, searching as far as a week in advance.

Airbnb search via application

If you’re traveling in a larger group, want a home-away-from-home feeling, or are planning a longer stay, Airbnb could be just what you are looking for. It connects private property owners with travelers.

While some hotels and guesthouses use the service to advertise rooms, many of the listings are for regular houses and apartments. They may not be available all of the time; people can make places available when they aren’t actually using them themselves. It’s also, therefore, a great way for home-owning travelers to make some money by renting their own place out when they are on the road. Properties may be vacant or you may share with the owner.

A wide range of facilities may be available; each listing is unique. Airbnb offers an alternative to staying in a traditional accommodation when traveling. There are often discounts for longer stays too.

The Best Travel App for Tracking Bookings

TripIt

Using confirmation emails to keep track of booking times, dates, and directions is nearly impossible. Having information in one centralized place in a travel app can make an itinerary much easier to understand. I always use  TripIt  for an at-a-glance view of all upcoming bookings, including flights, accommodation, and transportation.

Depending on who you’re flying with, use the airline’s native app during the check-in process (or Wallet on iOS) to keep track of boarding times and gate changes. Using third-party travel apps for flight and gate tracking can sometimes be cumbersome and they’re not always up to date. That being said, TripIt is usually on the ball!

The Best Travel App for Tracking Rewards Points

Awardwallet.

Best Travel Apps

Staying on top of points, rewards, and miles can be daunting, too, especially with the plethora of rewards programs out there nowadays. Though not a perfect system, AwardWallet is the most comprehensive way to view all your rewards balances in one spot. Their web interface is a little clunky, but their mobile app is pretty great.

The Best Apps to Use While You're Actually Traveling

The first set of apps I recommend for daily use come from Google. Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as Google Travel (yet?), but they do have a suite of tools which are perfect when you’re traveling. And they all work seamlessly with one another.

Best Travel Apps

The original Google app is the first one I check when I arrive in a new city, and usually every morning. They have smart “cards” that dynamically update with various types of location-based information, including local weather, local attractions and photo spots, currency conversions, time back home, updates from your favorite sports teams, and more.

Google Maps

Best Travel Apps

When I find a new place that I want to remember, I switch over to Google Maps and save the location. I also make sure to save the location of my accommodation, local bus or train stations, and other points of interest. Google places a star on each place that you save, so one look at your map shows you where everything you need is located.

Google Maps has also proven to be very accurate when it comes to public transportation schedules. From New York to Melbourne to Athens, Google Maps has proven to be a reliable and up-to-date tool for finding subway and bus stops and knowing what lines are running, and to where.

Google Translate

Best Travel Apps

If I’m having a particularly hard time communicating with locals, Google Translate has become a staple in my app toolkit. With their recent acquisition of WordLens, not only can you translate words and phrases, but you can automatically translate a sign, box label, or menu by taking a photo of it.

Best Travel Apps

Finding local places to eat and go out is never a problem using the crowdsourced Foursquare app. It finds where you are and recommends restaurants, cafes, and nightlife based on your preferences. So, if I like sandwiches and whiskey (which I do), it automatically shows me the best sandwich shops and whiskey bars in my new city, and provides me with tips for what to order when I get there.

Trail Wallet

Trail Wallet, Best Travel Apps

The only way I’ve been able to keep track of my expenses in places like Thailand is by using the Trail Wallet app. I set a daily and monthly budget and categorically keep track of my expenses throughout the day. It allows me to manage multiple currencies and switch between them seamlessly, automatically updating to my home currency based on the current conversion rate. I can also see what my major expenses are in list form or in a pie chart, and make adjustments to my spending habits based on my track record.

XE Currency

XE Currency

XE Currency provides the most up-to-date and accurate conversion rates. I always check XE before exchanging cash (which I try not to do because exchange booths generally provide the worst rates). It also shows conversion charts so you can keep on top of exchange rates and cash in by withdrawing a larger amount when a currency from an upcoming location drops.

Travel Apps for Keeping Records of Travel Documents

Best Travel Apps

Before going anywhere, take a picture of your important documents and keep scanned copies of your passport and health insurance policies in a folder in Dropbox .

Best Travel Apps

Whenever you find an interesting piece of information about an upcoming destination, paste it into Evernote , alongside the rest of your notes and information that you keep on hand. Evernote allows you to clip emails and web pages so you can hold onto copies of flight tickets, itineraries, visas, directions, or anything else that matters.

This is a great list and we use most of these apps too. Thanks for including Trail Wallet and I’m glad you’ve found it useful!

Of course! Trail Wallet is one of my favorite apps! 🙂

Great list of travel apps. Some of them I was using already, but at least I discovered a few new apps that will be very useful while travelling. Evernote will come in handy among others 🙂

Great! I’m glad you found some new ones. I don’t know what I’d do without Evernote. It helps me keep both my travels and my life organized!

I tried TripIt once and it was a good thing to have – but only because I had a lot of connections (from trains, through coaches, taxis and planes) during my trip so it helped me to keep the record of my journey. Otherwise I don´t use any apps (sometimes google maps but rarely when I am actually on road). But I think I am an exception because I´m not a friend with my smartphone! 😀 I will definitely use Dropbox on my travels out of Europe but so far I haven´t felt the need…thanks for the useful tips anyway 🙂

Google Maps is great when you’re on the road, because it shows you exactly where you are! I never get lost, all thanks to Google 🙂

Simply Decalre is an app to help you organize your receipts for customs declarations, it has real time currency, many other features like snapping a picture for your records. We have used it on the last couple of foreign trips, and it just makes life a whole lot easier. Simple to use. Another great app for your readers.

Fantastic resource man! Ive spent a good chunk of time traveling and I’m always looking for ways to make life on the road easier. Cheers!

That said, I have some thoughts with regards to the prolific use of tech on the road that I thought I’d share. Tech, as wonderful and as convenient as it is, has the ability to withdraw you from the present moment of travel, and all the exciting lessons on offer.

The world is becoming smaller, tech is largely to thank for this, and I appreciate that people nowadays feel the compulsive desire to ‘stay connected’ to current events, homeland, relationships etc. (or sometimes to gloat to those who decided not to join in on the adventure – not recommended). I think for many travelers, especially the younger generation, clinging to tech and searching for the nearest free WiFi is an attempt to bring familiarity with them on their journey. Connection with their familiar life back home provides a level of comfort and security – knowing that people back home care, are informed, and are supporting your ‘crazy’ decisions along the way (even if in reality, they aren’t).

Speaking from experience, this connection to familiarity is useful when you reach a low spot on your travel journey (which all of us will at some point), and it is also a hinderance when it comes to building authentic, genuine connections with the place, the people, and the culture you find yourself amongst.

It is truly a pet annoyance of mine to see people clinging to their smartphones, huddling around the nearest free WiFi zone, and checking facebook / instagram / twitter updates, when there is a wondrous world of activity happening right in front of them.

Tech makes life on the road easier, yes. But it takes away the intimacy of connection with people, places, and cultures that encompass travel. I’m not saying tech is taboo, however I feel that it’s use in the travel society is becoming so prevalent that good old face-to-face relationships are becoming endangered, and a forgotten shade of the travel canvas.

Maybe if people had a better appreciation of self, were more certain of their destiny, and were courageous enough to embrace a new world without the constant desire to cling to their beliefs back home, we would see more genuine connections on the road?

Just some thoughts. Indeed, your apps may in fact reduce the need to be constantly on our smartphones attempting to track the necessities of life. I’ll let you know on that one!

Jason Townsend – www.kickstartacause.com

Thanks so much for your insightful comment. I believe that, in today’s world, with the advent of technology, the most important thing we can do is limit it. I do rely on technology on a daily basis, especially since I work and travel at the same time, but yes, finding the right balance can be hard.

To frame things differently, perhaps staying connected to home allows people who wouldn’t otherwise go travel to feel more comfortable going out into the world. And sometimes, especially when we are constantly surrounded by new people and places, it can be nice to have something comfortable to lean back on.

I think we’re on the same page here. Technology is extremely accessible, and too much of a good thing can definitely be bad. As for me, I make efforts, whenever I can, to put the phone down and just enjoy 🙂

Great reframe Jeremy. That’s an excellent point.I can relate to this in my early traveller days…

Enjoyment comes from the simplest things. Life happens outside the ‘idiot box’ (a.k.a television) 😉

Jason Townsend

I would add diveadvisor to that list for Scuba Diver centric travellers.

It shows you articles on best places to dive, list of dive centres by country etc.

Also, airbnb imo should definitely be on there.

Otherwise cool list 🙂

Oh cool! I hadn’t heard of DiveAdvisor. Going to check it out 🙂

Although Jason rightly pointed out the hindrance that staying connected brings, I do enjoy its conveniences and the help that comes from the apps you listed. In fact, I just re-downloaded the Google App to take advantage of the cards. I forgot how awesome they were and appreciate you mentioning them.

One thing I’d like to add is instagram, and its usefulness when traveling. One time, my wife and I were in Gyeongju in Korea and drunkenly doing a photo search of instagram to see if there was anything we could see one night. This really beautiful pagoda came up and after piecing together enough pigeon Korean to ask a person about it, off we were to a previously unknown place.

Other than that, I like using instagram to see the perspectives that others are employing when taking shots of famous places. Just thought I’d that but besides that, this is a wonderful list. I actually played on the Google app for about ten minutes after reading this, haha. Thanks for sharing, Eric!

I do love Instagram, and these days, especially with the more enhanced location features, it’s increasingly more easy to find people and places nearby. I read an article recently about whether the recent advance in technology has stripped travel of its magic, and though I do think it has to an extent, I also really appreciate the conveniences that it provides.

But ultimately, it’s up to the user to decide how much they use it, and how much they want to get out of the real world vs. the online world.

I agree that keeping track of awards programs/points can be a pain. I am definitely going to look into the AwardWallet. The Foursquare also looks interesting. Thanks for the great tips/suggestions.

I was so optimistic when I saw this list just when I was trying to find how to get to my closest train station in Yongin, but alas, google maps tells me I can’t walk to either one when I walked to the furthest one, has none of the major landmarks I recognize to help orient me, and has no transit directions for the new train line here.

2gis was a GREAT app for this kind of thing, but other than randomly Santiago, Chile, 2 cities in Italy and 1 in Czech Republic, they’re ALL Russian cities. So disheartening!

Great list. Hopefully this can be great for us! Cheers and Thanks for this.

11 cities where you can fly for $150 or less round trip from Newark this spring

travel apps for flights

Looking for some travel deals from New Jersey? We got you covered.

Spring has sprung bringing warmer weather and more desire for travels. And so far, airfares in April are 1% cheaper than last year's April fares, according to Hopper , a travel website that tracks airfares.

Currently, the cheapest flights from New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport are en route to Miami and Detroit. Flights to these cities are selling for as low as $36, or $75 per roundtrip with no stops on Spirit Airlines.

The fares don't include checked luggage, or extra carry-on bags, which Spirit Airlines would charge around $80 for each item per round trip. (One personal item that fits entirely in the smaller sizer box — like a purse, small backpack, etc. — is included with your ticket, the airline's website says).

Here are the cheapest airfares from Newark in April and May — all under $150 for the roundtrip.

Cheap places to fly from Newark in April/May 2024

  • Charlotte, NC: $100
  • Miami, FL: $75
  • Atlanta, GA: $100
  • Orlando, FL: $125
  • Boston, MA: $130 (May fares only)
  • San Juan, PR: $150
  • Austin, TX: $130
  • Houston, TX: $125
  • Dallas, TX: $125
  • Detroit, MI: $75
  • New Orleans, LA: $105

*Fares don't include bags. Some airlines, may also charge fees for carry-on bags.

Passengers can sort United Airlines flights for planes that accommodate their wheelchair

travel apps for flights

United Airlines is officially rolling out new accessibility features Thursday that it says will make flying easier for wheelchair users.

The updates, which the airline previously announced , include the ability to find flights that are the best equipped to handle their mobility equipment by inputting the dimensions of their wheelchair in a filter on the booking page both on the airline’s app and website. The flight results will then prioritize the itineraries with planes that are best able to carry the mobility device.

“The more we know about a customer’s device, the more likely their experience will be a good one – from booking and check-in to the flight itself,” Linda Jojo, executive vice president and chief customer officer for United, said in a statement: “These new tools and policies also set our employees up for success, especially those working on the ramp or at the gate.”

Jojo told USA TODAY customers with disabilities will also be able to apply for partial refunds if the flights that are best able to accommodate their equipment are not the cheapest option on the route.

“Often, there are certain types of aircraft that we have where the cargo doors are not conducive to loading the larger personal wheelchairs,” she said.

The updates come out of a partnership United has with the United Spinal Association , a disability advocacy group.

“We hope with this partnership to continue looking for opportunities to improve travel for wheelchair users,” Vincenzo Piscopo, chief executive officer and president of United Spinal Association, told USA TODAY. “My hope is that they’ll continue with us in that journey, taking our feedback as we continue reaching that goal that any wheelchair user has a travel experience as close as possible to the experience that the rest of the community,”

Traveler stories: Airlines damaged thousands of mobility aids this year. Here's how 30+ flyers were affected.

Jojo acknowledged that air travel is not always accessible to people with disabilities and that there is more work to be done.

“We’re finding the best way to make this travel more safe and accessible to people who are in wheelchairs is talking to people who are actually in wheelchairs,” she said.

USA TODAY has reported on how difficult air travel can be for wheelchair users. Over the course of 2023, more than 30 disabled travelers shared their stories of wheelchair damage by airlines. On average, U.S. airlines damage or destroy 10,000 to 15,000 mobility devices every year, about 1.5% of the total number they transport.

United Airlines also announced Thursday that it is initiating a pilot program at Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport to assist passengers whose devices are damaged more quickly.

For at least the next six months, the airline will make specialized cushions available to install on its loaner chairs if a traveler’s personal wheelchair is unusable or unavailable after their flight.

“The pilot program focuses on the timeframe between a customer’s arrival and when United returns the wheelchair or provides an appropriate loaner wheelchair if the original is damaged,” a statement from the airline said. “United is currently testing specialized, adjustable Permobil cushions for loaner wheelchairs at its Houston hub that better match the customer’s needs and improve comfort and stability. The airline is also reimbursing customers for transportation expenses should they choose to wait at a location other than the airport.”

travel apps for flights

Taxis - Uber, Yandex Taxi and GetT, Metro - Yandex Metro. Maps: Google or Yandex again (Yandex is a Russian company actually bigger than Google here). Translations - again Google or Yandex... Yandex Transport for city buses, if up to...

2GIS as well — their businesses database is actually better that Yandex' one, so it' easier to look up the various establishments there.

Yandex Weather may be helpful too. It's as reliable as any weather prediction. If you're planning to use the Aeroexpress then their web app is useful and will save about 10% on tickets if these are purchased online. Both these apps have English language interfaces.

' class=

Use Accuweather app for weather forecast. Its very accurate. I have been using it for like a year and was always outperforming similar apps used by my friends.

Taxi-Uber is cheap and reliable all right.

' class=

I don't believe the Aeroexpress web app works anymore for ordering tickets (where they used to send bar code to cell phone app). Instead, at least it seemed to me when I was there in April, they had switched to using the Troika card. But maybe there is a different app I am not aware of?

mohanapte, here is what I use:

1. Hiring taxis - Uber first, then Gettaxi. Uber is being really aggressive to over take Gett and Yandex. They have dropped their airport to city center fare to ~700 rubles.

2. Maps to locate places - google maps is perfect. you can find your routes on your hotel wifi and then head out or do screenshots

3. Using the metro system - i use google maps. it will tell you the stations and number of stops

4. Translations - google translate. make sure you download the Russian offline package

5. Any other? - Tripadvisor!

Although I plan to familiarize myself with Cyrillic alphabets, I am very bad with languages and would like an interface in English. - if you message me I can send you pdf scans of my Russian language lessons. In the mean time take a look at this pocket guide I made two years ago to help me get around. You need to print it on one sheet of paper (double sided). Link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5faWKBo16t0T3dwWGhRZno0eGs

For Metro, I suggest using Yandex Metro...it is Russian, but can be set to English, and also does the best job by far I have seen of allowing you to pick locations, and if your phone is enabled, to provide real time tracking, minutes to destination, etc. When in Rome...that is, Google is fine for a lot of stuff, but I trust a local provider to have better, more up to date info...
