Travel Baseball: A Complete and Updated Guide for 2023

March 11, 2023

James Arnold

travel baseball tryouts 2023

Do you want your child to be a great baseball player?

Are you a youngster who has finally realized that you want to take your baseball skills to the next level?

Or possibly both the parent and the kid are reading together, eager to learn more about improving their baseball skills and turning it into a more serious activity.

If you feel it to be a convenient strategy, participating in travel baseball may provide answers to all of your questions and allow you to accomplish all of your ambitions.

In this article, you will learn all you need to know about travel balls, from the fundamentals to the more advanced aspects.

What Is Travel Baseball?

What is travel baseball

First and foremost, we must familiarize ourselves with the concept of “travel baseball.”

Typically, when people talk about travel baseball, they’re referring to a squad of elite players who participate in tournaments and train at their own facilities.

You may think of it as a sort of youth baseball in which games are played away from home.

Teams known as ‘ travel ball teams or travel teams ‘ in this form of baseball may travel to another state or city to compete in baseball travel tournaments.

Structure Of Competition

A tournament system is used for almost all travel baseball games, played on weekends.

Tournaments may potentially take place anywhere, although they are most often conducted in multi-field sites near major transportation hubs.

You can anticipate traveling more if you reside far away from such transit centers.

The final teams for the event are decided after each travel ball team has played several matches.

Depending on how well a team does, they may play somewhere between three to eight games throughout the course of a two-day or three-day tournament.

The number of tournaments a team may enter isn’t set; although two per month is considered normal, higher-level teams may play more regularly.

Level-Play In Travel Baseball

There are generally three categories of competition in a travel baseball tournament, ranging from the least developed to the most developed level of youth baseball.

This classification is according to Baseball Youth’s DivLevel classification system, which is a travel baseball’s national team division classification system.

1. Division 1 Or D1

Within Baseball Youth’s DivLevel categorization system, Division 1 or D1 is the top level of play.

D1 is better suited for teams considered Major/All-Levels of AAA, Gold, or Elite/Advanced in their respective leagues.

Teams in the D1 division should play the bulk of their games against regionally competitive opponents and/or nationally rated.

2. Division 2 Or D2

Within Baseball Youth’s DivLevel categorization system, Division 2 or D2 is the intermediate level of play.

Teams graded as Medium AA/High AA, Silver, or High-Level Intermediate are best suited to compete at the D1 level.

Teams in the D2 division should play the bulk of their games against other mid-level regional and local opponents in the same division.

3. Division 3 Or D3

Within Baseball Youth’s DivLevel categorization system, Division 3 or D3 is the weakest level of play.

Low AA/All-Levels of A, Bronze, or Low-Level Intermediate/Beginner teams are the greatest fit for the D1 level.

Teams in the D3 division should play the majority of their games against other domestic and regionally-based opponents in the same division.

Travel Baseball Against Little League

Travel baseball and little league

There are several significant parallels and distinctions between travel baseball and little league baseball .

Both aid in developing important life qualities such as a positive work ethic, sportsmanship, cooperation, and the ability to learn from mistakes.

They are, however, significantly different in terms of time investment and competition.

One is recognized for being competitive and raising your skill level, while the other is known for being recreational and a means for youth to learn the rules.

Travel baseball offers a higher competition level than what traditional little leagues provide.

In a single season, roughly 14-20 games are played in both.

There isn’t much difference between these two, other than the amount of seriousness and the fact that you’ll have to travel for a travel ball .

How To Get On A Travel Baseball Team?

As a player, being a member of a travel baseball team is a thrilling experience.

Following are a few pointers that can help you relax and perform at your best, making joining a baseball team much simpler.

1. Be On Time (Or Before Time)

Be on time during travel baseball

First of all, plan to arrive a few minutes early. If you arrive late, you’ll have to hustle to keep up with everyone.

Arrive early enough to check in, go for a quick jog, play a game of light catch with a buddy, and ease up on your own.

2. If You Are A Baseball Player, Look Like One

Dress appropriately for tryouts; do not show up in jeans or oversized basketball shorts.

The ideal outfit consists of a clean pair of baseball trousers , a decent light sports shirt, and a nice hat worn with the bill facing front.

If you don’t have baseball pants available, a nice pair of sweatpants will do.

3. Practice Makes Perfect

You should play catch even if you only have time to do so twice or three times before the tryout.

If you’ve been to the tryouts previously and are familiar with a few of the activities they’ll be doing; it’s a good idea to put those skills into practice as much as possible.

Practice gaining leads , doing excellent leaps, and anything else you believe you’ll see during the tryout.

4. Play Your Usual

travel baseball tryouts 2023

You should just play your game and allow the game to come to you; don’t try to force it.

Simply wait for the right chance to present yourself, and then boldly do your task to the best of your ability.

If you push too hard, you will almost certainly make more errors than you would otherwise.

5. Good Behavior

You’ll be a suitable candidate if you’re willing to work hard and take constructive feedback.

Have a sportsman’s attitude ; if you don’t catch the ball, ask the coach to throw it again instead of pouting.

Don’t be hesitant and hide in places, missing out on the chance to learn what you need to know in travel teams.

Also, remember to be kind to your teammates , motivating them when they make errors and communicating with them regularly while conducting the exercises.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Travel Baseball

There are upsides and downsides to consider when it comes to travel baseball.

  • Strong Competition: Travel baseball lets kids play with and against some of the finest players in their region and even beyond.

The players are more committed to the game and motivated to progress. Your child’s performance will be pushed to the limit by the increased level of competition.

  • Improved Coaching: Coaches are frequently ex-players who have gone on to coaching careers in the sport.

There is a higher likelihood that a travel baseball coach will be better educated, more experienced, and more tied to the game.

  • Fun Experience: Many weekends will be spent in hotels together, learning about new places and bonding as a group in a travel baseball team.

It’s one of the best ways for young people to go to new places around their region and the country, and they can do it while having an amazing time with their teammates.

  • Easy Exposure: You can get a lot of attention from college and professional scouts by playing travel baseball.

One of the best things about being on a high-level travel baseball team is meeting other high-level coaches.

  • Character Growth: The significance of travel teams about being on time, behaving well, and putting in the most effort makes a child more disciplined.

As young people move from Minor League Baseball (MiLB) to Major League Baseball ( MLB ), they already have the sense of urgency that they need.

Disadvantages

  • Very Competitive: Travel teams take their games seriously and strive to win games.

A travel team must balance the development of its players while still attempting to win matches. This often results in players who aren’t the greatest not having a chance to play.

  • Costly: Travel baseball is costly and sometimes extremely costly, which might be a reason for most kids to drop its idea.
  • Prioritized Task: Even a reasonably competitive travel squad may consume a summer’s worth of weekends.

As a result, it is a time-consuming task that you must be able to prioritize.

2023-2024 Tryout Dates Posted

You may contact us regarding 2023-2024 Tryouts at [email protected].

Please ALWAYS confirm dates and times here prior to attending. CHANGES OR ADJUSTMENTS WILL BE POSTED IN THE SCHEDULE BELOW !!

SOME SCHEDULES AT VARIOUS AGES HAVE BEEN ADJUSTED. SELECTIONS ARE BEING FINALIZED. IF ANY NEW DATES ARE CREATED, THERE WILL BE A NOTE HERE.

I f there are weather/field concerns or forecasted inclement weather, we will post a weather update by 3:30 PM each weekday for planned tryout dates.

We will post weekend updates by 2pm and throughout the day.

Save yourself registration time - download the form (below) and bring it filled out.

Catchers - don't forget your equipment!!

Players - don't forget your water bottles!

Tryouts are annually held, beginning in July, for our next FULL YEAR Longshots Baseball season, which includes the fall program, three winter development segments and the spring/summer season. Additional private instruction is available from some of the Chicago area’s premier instructors and coaches.

Most Senior Division (HS) players in our program typically play with their high school graduating class team, regardless of their age eligibility.  If they are capable and it's the correct course of action, we will place them "up".  Players should try out for the team that corresponds with their graduating class.

All younger players will play with their class, as well.  We believe, based on our extensive and successful experience, that "age-under" players, when playing up and developing with their school class early, stand a much better chance to compete as they approach high school. We do not set up players to “play down”. If you would like to “try out up”,  please contact us.

All players in our program try out every year.  Where there is no entitlement here,  our players always are challenged to earn their way.  There is clearly an advantage to getting into the program early and developing faster to be more competitive as players get older.  As most folks in travel baseball, college coaching and pro scouting know, Longshots Baseball is highly recognized for player development. We become a highly sought-after destination as players get older. Our track record of player success – EVERY YEAR – speaks for itself.

Players, by age group (and ultimately teams), are selected by our highly respected and experienced Senior Division (HS-level) coaches. For 8th Grade and under selection, evaluation and selection is primarily done from coaches outside outside that age group. Our 7th and 8th grade age groups have been non-parent led.

2023-2024 TRYOUT SESSIONS

All current and prospective players must try out. Current LB players have obviously tried out across the year. If there are dates or injury concerns, please feel free to notify us. We will do what we can to accommodate folks, but there isn’t always a lot of flexibility.

Players will be allowed to attend only one tryout session.  We will give players feedback after tryout session.  We will likely give feedback in one of a couple forms:

1)   An invitation to play (done in-person or follow-up contact)

2)   An offer to attend a follow-up tryout session for further review (done in-person, follow-up contact or listed here on our site)

All players play with their grade, regardless of age eligibility .    All grade group rosters start “clean” every year – nobody is guaranteed a spot.  We are not like most programs... we don't look for "a player or two".  We are looking for the most talented, skilled, passionate and committed players who want to truly be the best baseball player they can be… because it’s what we  as a program commit to support and develop. It is what we do best… and have done... for 29 years!

We have had 60  MLB draft picks, 5 MLB players and ~480  college commitments in 17 graduating classes. How many programs have been so consistently successful each year? In today’s world of so many new travel teams popping up each year, we are beginning our 30th year.  Every program talks development… we DO development.  Ask any college coach or pro scout for a reference. They all know us and what we do.

We welcome parents to be as involved as they want to be in this program, but the program and the age groups are non-parent led . We do have many parent coaches involved in the program... some of whom have played MLB ball.

We encourage youth players to try out when they are ready, but as young as reasonable.  It is very clear that the training our younger guys get positions them much more effectively for making our older teams, as highly talented players try out at all ages here every year.  All our training is designed and executed as age-appropriate.

Tryout Schedule 2023-2024 Season

NOTE:   These dates are subject to change . Please check the schedule before attending a session, and please check here for rain/weather and other updates.

NOTE: Roster spots will begin to be filled immediately. In most cases, we will save a very limited number of spots for our last listed tryout. When a player is offered a roster spot, it is confirmed when we receive a deposit check.

NOTE: We will notify all interested tryout participants when each age/grade group tryout process is completed. Roster completion notice will be posted next to the Age Group (below). Confirmed 2023-2024 players will be notified prior to the tryout process being completed.

The Registration "Raider Travel Baseball" is not currently available.

2024 Tournament Trail

Summer 2024 tournament trail, 2024 spf raiders travel baseball tryouts.

We thank you for trying out for one of our 7u through 12u travel baseball teams. At this time, the tryouts have taken place and the teams have begun their winter training.

Tryouts were scheduled for October 7 through October 9, 2023.

As participation in the Travel Program is outside of the recreational baseball program, all players must attend a tryout session in order to be considered. As always, trying out for one of our Travel Baseball Teams DOES NOT GUARANTEE a spot on a team, but rather an opportunity for a player to show what they know for our coaches and evaluators.

SPF Raiders Travel Baseball Program

The SPF Raiders Travel Baseball Program is the competitive side of the SPF Baseball league.  As the name indicates, teams in the travel program compete against other towns and baseball clubs through various leagues and tournaments.  Our teams have completed in baseball tournaments in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and of course Cooperstown New York.  In order to be a member in this program players must tryout in October for one of our teams.

The Mission of the SPFBL Raiders Travel Baseball program is to provide youth ballplayers in both Scotch Plains and Fanwood more intensive skill development and a higher level of competition on an additive basis to the traditional house league program. SPFBL Raiders Travel Baseball is an extension of the SPFBL recreational youth baseball program, which is designed to promote the development of strong character, a right attitude, a sense of responsibility and citizenship in youngsters, using the game of baseball as a vehicle. It is the intent of the SPFBL Raiders Travel Baseball program to achieve this goal through fair play, good sportsmanship, congenial fellowship, and a level of competitive baseball that meets the needs of a select group of kids and their families.

SPF Raiders Middle School Baseball Program

Registration is now closed for tryouts for the 2024 SPF Raiders Middle School Program. (12/22/2023)

Our league operates 2 middle school age baseball teams (Nettingham Middle School and Terrill Middle School) that are open to those who play baseball through SPFBL.  This includes being a participant on one of our travel baseball teams or playing in the recreational baseball program.  Tryouts are open to players in seventh or eighth grade and are attending either of the schools above. Not affiliated with the SPF BOE.

NOTE: Beginning with the 2024 teams, in order to be eligible to tryout for one of the teams, players must have been a participant the previous year (2023 Season) in one of the following SPFBL baseball programs:

1.  Played the previous year on one of the Middle School teams

2.  Played the previous year on one of the 12u Travel Baseball Teams

3.  Played in the recreational baseball division

To clarify, in order to tryout for one of the Middle School Baseball teams, the player must have played for SPFBL the previous year (during the 2023 season to try out for the 2024 Middle School Teams).  Exceptions to this rule are as follows:

1.  A player new to Scotch Plains or Fanwood the previous year

2.  A player who would have played but sustained an injury or illness that prevented him/her from playing

3.  A player who tried out for a travel baseball slot (i.e. 12u or Middle School) and was not offered a slot by the league.

4.  Other unspecified reasons (In this case, a family may submit their exception to the travel committee for review.  It does not guarantee that the committee accepts the reason).

SPF Raiders Travel Baseball Annual Cooperstown Trip

travel baseball tryouts 2023

Our program invites our travel teams to participate in one of three Cooperstown venues  at the conclusion of their 12u season. Our teams have competed at All Star Village, Dreams Park and the Cooperstown Experience at the University of Oneonta. At these venues our teams compete against other teams from the United States and, in some cases, the world. Our travel program views this as a culminating experience for our youth players before they move on to the larger field in middle and high school.

NOTE: Beginning with the 2024 teams, in order to be eligible to be a participant on the 12u Cooperstown team, a player must tryout for and make that year's 12u roster and be a full time player competing over the summer. Additionally, any player that SPF Raiders Travel Baseball program is sponsoring for the Cooperstown experience must have been playing in the league during their 11u season prior to trying out for the 12u team.

Players who had not been a participant on their prior 11u team may tryout for and make the 12u team, however they may NOT be on the roster for the Cooperstown trip.

To clarify, in order to be placed on the Cooperstown roster for one of the 12u teams, the player must have played for the 11u team previously. Exceptions to this rule are as follows:

3.  A player who tried out for a travel baseball slot during the 11u seasons prior to the 12u season and was not offered a slot by the league.

PWYBA Travel Baseball

PWYBA is proud of our strong community based baseball program.  In addition to our in-house program, PWYBA offers a full travel schedule option to 9-15 year old kids.  Travel baseball is an extensive commitment and families need to consider all aspects of this commitment carefully before making the decision between in-house vs. travel.  Travel baseball requires commitment from players, coaches, and parents, from April through July, and possibly into early August.  Every player’s presence is important and the player is expected to make every effort to attend all practices, league games, and tournament games.  Unexcused and/or excessive absences will result in a reduction of playing time and may result in dismissal from the team.  This should only be considered for kids who are most serious about baseball and can commit to the schedule.

PWYBA Travel Handbook

2023 pwyba travel tryout dates.

The tentative dates and times for the 2023 PWYBA Travel program tryouts are below. These dates are subject to change. Your player will be assigned a time within this block about 7-10  days before the tryout date.  Tryouts typically last 1.25-1.5 hours.

2023 Travel Tournament Schedule

The 2023 PWYBA travel tournament schedule is below.  This schedule is tentative and subject to change based on final registration numbers and teams formed.

Travel Baseball Teams

PWYBA travel baseball will field travel teams at the 9-15 year old age levels.  In general, there will be one AAA team at each age level, one or two parity AA teams and one or two parity A level teams. 9U is the exception to this, where two or three teams will be formed: one AAA team and one or two AA teams.

PWYBA strives to have as many kids playing travel baseball as possible while ensuring they are competitive at the level they are assigned.  Being competitive is important for player and team development, success on the field, and continued interest in the sport.  The number of AA and A teams may change each year (increase or decrease) depending on the factors listed below.

Players registered – The depth of players at each grade level can have an effect on the number of players ready/available to play travel baseball.

Competitiveness – PWYBA wants players appropriately placed against competition that is best suited for their skills as a baseball player.  This does not mean that the team must win every game but rather that the players can consistently challenge the competition before them in any given game.  With competitiveness a somewhat subjective term, PWYBA considers winning percentage (winning percentages of .350 -.500 can still be competitive), run differential, number of times losing by more than 10 runs, number of times the team played on Sundays in tournaments, number of times a team placed (1st-3rd) in a tournament, and if they qualified for state.

Coach Feedback – Coach feedback is a tool used to get an understanding from those most familiar with the players’ abilities on their team and at their grade level.  At the end of each season, and in subsequent follow up interviews if necessary, coaches are asked to discuss their season and the players.  This feedback will be an important part of the grade level team formations.

History – Records are maintained at each grade level and will be utilized to gain a historical perspective of the grade levels overall success.

The travel oversight committee, made up of five board members, will make the final determination on the number of teams and level of play.

Travel baseball teams will play in the Metro Baseball League or Gopher State League (roughly 16 game league schedule) along with entering four weekend tournaments.  The teams could also play in up to three state tournaments in July if they qualify.

Players who do not make one of the travel teams will be placed on a summer team in the house league.

Again, the commitment for travel baseball is extensive.  We strongly encourage families to carefully consider these options and sign up for the program best suited for their player.

If you have questions please feel free to reach out to Paul Koziol or Chris Post, PWYBA Travel Directors.

Eligibility

A player is eligible to participate in PWYBA Travel Baseball team tryouts subject to the following criteria:

  • In accordance with MBL and MYAS policy, players must reside within the boundaries of Independent School District 284 OR if outside the boundaries the player must be open-enrolled in a public school of ISD 284.  A listing of those schools may be found at www.wayzata.k12.mn.us
  • Players must have paid all applicable fees and any arrearages from previous PWYBA programs
  • Players must meet age guidelines specified by the national governing organizations.
  • Proposed exceptions to this policy, describing extenuating circumstances for the exception, must be addressed to the PWYBA and reviewed by the PWYBA Board of Directors at a regular monthly meeting.
  • Players cannot be rostered and play for any other team or association from May 1 through the last game of the travel season (except for any player participating on a high school team). Any player found to be rostered on another team will be removed from the PWYBA team. There may be exceptions with High School and Spring Baseball leagues. These will be handled on a case by case basis.

Players must have a legal residence within the Wayzata School District 284 boundaries as of April 1 OR if the player does not live within the boundaries the player must be open enrolled (registered) to a Wayzata School District 284 public school as of April 1.  Players who have made a travel or tournament team but move out of the district 284 boundaries before April 1 OR players who qualify to play via open enrollment but are no longer attending a Wayzata public school on April 1 will be removed from the team.

2023 Season Birthdate Cutoff

The birthdate cutoff is April 30. The age level for which a player is eligible is the player’s age on April 30.  A player can play up only to play with his school grade, and not because he or his parents believe he needs to be “at a more competitive level.”  The Travel Director should be notified of a player wishing to play up with his grade.  A player cannot play down (i.e., play on a team younger than his/her age level) for any reason, per rules of the governing organizations.

A copy of the child’s birth certificate should be supplied to the head coach at the first parent/coach pre-season meeting. It should be noted that players who have not completed the third grade by the end of the school year will not be eligible for the 9U program.

  • 9U - 5/1/2013 through 4/30/2014 or completing 3rd grade
  • 10U - 5/1/2012 through 4/30/2013 or completing 4th grade
  • 11U - 5/1/2011 through 4/30/2012 or completing 5th grade
  • 12U - 5/1/2010 through 4/30/2011 or completing 6th grade
  • 13U - 5/1/2009 through 4/30/2010 or completing 7th grade
  • 14U - 5/1/2008 through 4/30/2009 or completing 8th grade
  • 15U - 5/1/2007 through 4/30/2008 or completing 9th grade.

A player who has the option of playing up with his grade can only be evaluated for the age level he has signed up for (e.g., cannot tryout for the 10u team if opted to evaluate with 11u at his grade level).

Players in the PWYBA travel program are not allowed to be rostered and play for any other team or association from May 1 through the last game of the travel season, except for any player participating on a high school team.  Any player found to be rostered on another team will be removed from the PWYBA team.  Those rostered on a spring team prior to the start to the travel season will need to complete that spring season prior to playing in any games for their PWYBA travel team.

Registration Fees

The initial registration and travel fee covers the team’s expenses for participation in league games, umpires, equipment, uniforms, and association administration and support.

The initial registration and evaluation fee are collected at time of registration. The evaluation fee is non-refundable.

If a player makes a travel team, the travel fee will be collected at uniform handout.

A player who makes a travel team and decides not to participate on that team will not be given a refund and will be ineligible to participate in the travel program in the next year.  This includes the senior travel programs.

Additional Fees

If a team qualifies for and receives bids to a state tournament, the association will pay the entry fee for one state tournament.  All other entry fees for state tournaments will be at the teams expense.

Teams will also be responsible for any gate fees due to the host association for any tournaments that have this charge.

There will be a parents’ meeting conducted by the head coach to review all appropriate fees. Once a player has been placed on a team, there will be no refunds except for players who suffer a long-term injury or illness. All refund requests will be prorated by the number of games played and must be approved by the Travel Director.

Bat Standards

Travel baseball teams with the PWYBA play games under the governing rules of MYAS and MBL/MBT.

The most current bat standards are posted on the MYAS and MBL/MBT websites.

It should be noted that some of the standards set by each organization may be different. Your player will likely be playing tournaments and/or league play in each of the organizations. We recommend you review both sets of standards and purchase a bat that would be eligible for use in both MYAS and MBL/MBT.  The standards are set by MYAS and MBL/MBT and are subject to change.

My Background

My winning philosophy, my support team.

I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic where baseball is life. I was lucky enough to be recruited to play baseball in America, and have played for and worked with some of the best organizations around. I now have dedicated my life to helping others excel in the game of baseball.

I recruit the best coaches and trainers to ensure the success of our organization. We work hand in hand to support our young athletes and their families.

I believe that hard work and a positive mindset are the keys to success. While some sports require you to be tall, or large to truly succeed, baseball is a game of skill. With the right mindset and work ethic, anyone can excel.

The objectives of the Bulldogs are to teach positive values to the players, with a great deal of emphasis on discipline, hustle, attitude, and teamwork. We achieve this while accelerating player development and increase their exposure to next level opportunities by providing first-rate coaching, strong competition and a dedication for success.
