A Love Letter to our Travel Buddies

travel love letter

Dear travel buddy,

Just a few weeks ago, we were talking about our next trip. We were so close to booking our flights. Somehow we didn’t as if we knew what would happen. And right now we would have been planning the details of a road trip around Ireland. I was looking forward to this so very, very much. Not just getting to know a new country but also spending so much time talking, laughing, exploring and eating. I miss our adventures.⁣

What is it with travelling that turns complete strangers into companions for our adventures? Some stick around for a single day, a single trip and some get together every year to explore the world together. Cheers to those who stay in contact for more than a single exploration – that’s the true recipe for a life long friendship.

Love Letter Travel Buddies

Travel buddies can make a great trip truly memorable. Our shared laughs and stories over hours on the road, the chance to order more than just one item on the menu and then swap plates halfway, different backgrounds and interests that inspire the other to try new things and open their mind about worlds that the other didn’t even know existed.⁣

Dear travel buddies of the world, you rock and I can’t wait to meet you and see some of you again somewhere,⁣ Take care,⁣⁣ xx

Love Letter Travel Buddies

Grüß dich, I'm Viki!

At Chronic Wanderlust, I write about my two great passions: travelling and diving – and have been doing so since 2013.

I usually spend a solid majority of the year travelling to experience extraordinary underwater adventures, taking road trips through countries I don’t know (yet) or exploring my home country of Austria.

As a certified divemaster, passionate underwater & travel photographer, road trip enthusiast and individual traveller, I collect unique moments all over the world.

I don’t believe that severe cases of wanderlust – aka chronic wanderlust – can be cured, only treated. On this blog, I want to show you how this can best be realised.

Curious to get to know me better?

Dear Travel, a Love Letter

Dear Travel,

Your alluring vistas call from afar, bringing whispers of lessons that fill my heart and mind. I have been your faithful student for some time, learning to embrace adventure and spontaneity, patience and grace, hope and humanity.

Fortaleza Canyon and Bayon Temple

Standing at the edge of canyons, from the Grand Canyon in the American West to Fortaleza Canyon in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul, I’ve come to understand that the beauty of the world runs deep into cracks and crevices that have been carved into the Earth for centuries, and that one’s perspective shifts when surrounded by such grandeur.

Feeling the mist of waterfalls chased through lush landscapes in Taiwan and Ghana , I’ve passed tests of fear and endurance and been richly rewarded, not just with the perfect picture, but with a sense of pride and strength, feeling alive in the moment.

Foot Bridge in Taiwan and Wli Falls in Ghana

I’ve learned that when you are lost in an unfamiliar place, there is always someone willing to help, to not only show you the way, but also share the way they live, dance, work and play.

I have wandered all manner of streets, lanes and alleyways and seen that human creativity comes in all forms, from the gritty street art of London’s Brick Lane to the spirit-filled architecture of Barcelona’s La Sagrada Familia.

Street Art in East End, London

I have learned that mind-boggling human ingenuity and man-made wonders transcend time, from the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat to the pinnacle of modernity that is Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.

There is no better way to be filled with the world’s lessons than over food, like while learning to make pork dumplings in Beijing, empanadas in Mendoza or cicchetti in Venice . Sitting at a table with newfound friends and sharing stories over a meal makes one aware that the bonds built while breaking bread are the true flavor of any destination.

Dim Sum in Hong Kong

I’ve learned that discovery is not just for far-off places. It’s found on roads close to home, in small towns with their own overlooked charms and natural beauty — each new discovery revealing familiar memories and offering the possibility of creating new ones.

undefined

Because, dear travel, the lesson you’ve taught is that no matter where or how far we travel, we can break free of the ordinary, see something new or see something old in a new way.

You challenge all of our senses, weaving your way into the fabric of our most treasured memories of people and places, and the feelings of joy, gratitude and love that go along with them.

Because of these lessons, I know we will travel again.

Picture of words for quote 9

  • “I just want to hold your hand and wander the streets with you.” – Anonymous
  • “I want to travel the world with two things in my hands: your hand in one and a camera in the other.” – Anonymous

These are so us, we wander the streets of every city we go to hand in hand. Never caring about any comments or wolf whistle & we’ve had a few.

To travel as a couple for us, make our trip more exciting & rewarding. Yes, I know I believe I am an incurable romantic, who knew…

Picture of words in quote 14

  • “A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it.”— John Steinbeck
  • “Travel keeps you young and free, even when you’re an old married couple.” – Anonymous

Oh wow are these two so correct, whilst travel does keep you young and free. As soon as you think you are in control the wheels fall off & go rolling down the road at break neck speed…

Though as we add in our article 6 steps to create your perfect itinerary … Number 5. is ‘Just Breathe’.

Picture of words in quote 11

  • “Here’s to road trips, red eyes, and a lifetime of adventure together.” – Anonymous

How could anyone deny number 17 doesn’t belong in our beautifully romantic travel quotes… ‘sigh’

I also have to add many of our road trip, red eyes are due to late nights sitting chatting. Though, it may also have a little to do with what’s consumed, whilst chatting. But adventures together are the very best.

Picture with words from Quote 19

  • “Oh darling, let’s be adventurers.” – Anonymous

How could anyone refuse an invitation like that I ask… I think this is one that goes into the ‘favourites’ box… It just make me tingly.

  • “Find someone who is a home and an adventure all at once.”— Anonymous

Now this one has a fine quality in it, who doesn’t want to find that one person. That has the ability to ignite the adventurer in them, whilst being their home base or lodestone.

Picture with words of quote 21

  • “As soon as I saw you, I knew you would be an adventure of a lifetime.” – Winnie the Pooh

I’m saving this for our family vacation this fall 😉

ha ha… you can print some out and post them around the place….

Mary

“Travel keeps you young and free,” But I’m LAAAAZYYYYYY 😅🤣Haha

Ha Ha … and I’m old but still love travelling… it is freeing you should try it ha ha

Mayra

These quotes are so inspiring! Who we choose as our travel companion is as important as the destination. I love travelling and I love desserts so the one saying “Love is the food of life, travel is dessert” sounded like home.

It is even when travelling in a group…I love that one also it’s quite fitting I think

A Love Letter to Travel

travel

About a year ago, friends came over to our house for dinner. They brought along a hostess gift, a thick brown scrapbook, glossy covered and tied together with what looked like a brown shoelace. The scrapbook had belonged to a woman they had befriended eons ago — another life almost — back when they were in school and pandemics were events that had happened so long ago that everyone who was in one was dead by now.

The scrapbook painstakingly documented two months of European travel, beginning when Miss Alma Kirkeby of Denver embarked on a White Star line sailing ship, the S.S. Majestic. At the time, it was recognized as the world’s largest ship. The young nurse was joined by three friends, sisters Misses Mabel and Martha Ford, and Miss Janie, whose last name I can’t figure out from the printed booklet listing Passengers in Second Class.

travel love letter

That was June 23, 1928. The friends were about to commence on A Distinctive European Trip — according to a pamphlet detailing that fact. Professor Herbert A. Youtz of Oberlin, Ohio gave them the deets:

For “ten weeks and a half . . . [with] the choice of a rewarding and varied itinerary which we shall all feel could not have been improved for the limited cost and time. . . [you are part of] the selection of a group of travelers eager for the travel experience and eager to make the social life of the party a memorable adventure in friendship.”

The cost was $1,025, (roughly about $15,600 in 2021) which included everything except steward’s fees on the steamers. The women would travel to France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Holland, England, Scotland, and Wales. Anyone else out of breath after reading that list?

Before they pushed off from American shores, the four planned to visit New York, including — according to James J. Ford of Denver, in a letter typed on translucent onionskin dated June 15, a must-visit attraction: Niagara Falls. Ford, likely Mabel and Martha’s father, prepared a Memorandum of Things To Do On The Trip .

Ford’s tone was stern: “Put your handbags, valuables, passports etc, on the seat under the mattress under your head. NOT on the mattress under pillow as they might slip out on floor. Don’t place too near the back or side as they might slip under the seat. Be careful.”

Throughout his missive, Dad rode shotgun, advising where to store luggage, how much to tip porters, Red Caps, and Bell Boys, and the importance of getting a refund of $8.40 from the ticket agent before having breakfast at the Falls. With a fatherly flourish, Ford typed an all-caps reminder: “PLEASE DONT GO TOO NEAR THE WATER OR ON THE ROCKS they are slippery.”

He then encouraged the foursome to “have the time of your lives,” declaring that once they get to the steamer, he “can go no further.”

Was there a lot of whooping and hollering with joy at this? I wish I knew, but while Alma memorializes the journey in her scrapbook, she expressed little to no emotion. There are menus from the ship crossing and menus from restaurants; postcards of sights seen; drink coasters; tour maps; concert tickets; pressed flowers and more. It is a pictorial testament that transports us to the past, to a time when European travel was a luxury few could experience.

travel love letter

Fast forward to 2021. We, the travel-starved since March 2020, have endured days of uncertainty, wondering when life might, or if, return to normal in the After-Times. We have with resignation acknowledged that travel is an evolving experience, encompassing the virtual, the actual, and someplace in between.

As I turned the pages of Alma’s scrapbook, pent-up emotion washed over me — a cocktail of loss, petulance, and frustration —, and before I knew it, tears threatened to drop on her almost 93-year-old travelogue. Fearing that I’d splotch and ruin this pictorial history of life lived fancy free, I closed the scrapbook and pondered the good old days.

But then I paused. These women took on months of journeying only eight years after the conclusion of the Spanish Flu pandemic, without vaccines or the science we rely upon today to keep us healthy. Seen in that light, they were intrepid adventurers.

Carefully preserved travel mementos raise a question: Are you a tourist or a traveler?

If you Google “travel,” at some point you’re bound to run into the tourist v. traveler debate. After distilling a number of these arguments, I’ve reached an understanding that:

  • tourists plan their trips, often with the help of travel agents; travelers are footloose and fancy free, letting emotions and whims guide them;
  • tourists stay in hotels, take cruises, and travel in group tours; travelers can most often be found sleeping in a tent or a hammock strung between two palm trees;
  • tourists are fond of restaurant meals, particularly the expensive ones that require reservations; travelers will eat street food (and endure the consequences);
  • tourists hail taxis; travelers climb mountains, often alone;
  • tourists take selfies; travelers photograph the vibe;
  • tourists visit the Taj Mahal; travelers skydive from the highest mountain;
  • tourists go to Vegas; travelers seek out green, environmentally friendly locales;
  • Note: souvenir means a thing to help remember a person, place, or event

I preserve photos from our travels because they help me recall places and feelings, often providing a basis to write about the locale. Photos we’ve taken while traveling often figure in my blog posts and novels because I believe you have to visit a spot — and breathe in its very essence — before you can write about it.

travel love letter

The truth is travel is an experience defined by the individual. For some, adventure happens only when it’s uncomfortable, for others, adventure happens each time you turn a corner. However you define your travels, they are mind-broadening, eye-opening, and if you want to live fully, one of life’s essentials.

Here’s to traveling wherever your heart leads you, and may that be as soon as possible.

We had reservations in Madrid, Barcelona, Montserrat, and Tossa Del Mar besides stays in Portugal & Annecy & Paris France. May try again in the fall.

Emily Kemme Ken Widel What a wonderful trip. I think the world will begin to open up in the fall, if infection numbers continue to recede. We’ve mostly traveled to Europe in September-November. It’s the perfect time to experience it (when life is normal) because kids are back in school so everything is much less crowded. Of course, who’s to say what normal will look like for awhile.

Emily, put Annecy France on your bucket list. We were there 10 years ago and didn’t get enough time there. It borders the Swiz Alps and is about 30 miles south of Geneva but there are poor train connections between French and Swiz trains.

Agree – Annecy is a great place especially in the weekend for farmers market. I work sometimes in Nyon, CH and drove one day to Annecy. Beautiful place. Ken Widel where in Portugal? That sounds like a fantastic itinerary

Judi we booked an AirB&B in Cascais because it was on the beach and has a long bike path that follows the coast to the north. It’s a short train ride to Lisbon and has regular bus service to the castle’s to the north. We booked AB&B everywhere but a hotel in Annecy and the monastery in Montserrat. When the airlines shut down AB&B gave us a full refund for every one. BTW we were meeting Linda’s sister in Annecy & going on to Paris and were splitting an outrageous $ AB&B and I was really surprised to get our $ back on that one.

Thanks for the Lisbon ideas. We’ve wondered how to work in a bike trip in Portugal.

We were in Lisbon 3 yrs ago and loved it. Take good walking shoes. All streets are cobblestone and big jills everywhere. We have a good friend who has a house in Cascais – she’s Swiss but her husband is from Porto. We booked a day tour with a group called “We hate tourism tours”. Don’t let the name out you off – it was fantastic. We went to Sintra and they put together a great tailgate lunch. They have several different tours and did an excellent job. A lot of fun. https://www.wehatetourismtours.com/

Judi thx that’s great to know. I keep a journal of every trip and notes for future ones. I really appreciate the info!

Annecy looks like it’s close to Vevey, Switzerland — I have a cousin who lives there and we’ve tried to hook up (but have had to cancel two trips to do that for various reasons pre-covid.). We did get together with him and his partner in Split (Croatia), which is wonderful for both bicycling, food, and history. It’s on the Dalmatian Coast on the Adriatic.

Croatia is #1 on Linda’s list. We spent time in Slovenia just to the north of Croatia which was heavily forested and very pretty with locals who were very “stand offish.” We were in a Peugeot convertible so I suppose we stood out, but we were stopped 3 times to check for our tax stamp which you must purchase before entering the country ($500 Euro fine). I had the stamp and they politely sent me on but that part was creepy. We drove around Vevey just checking it out until the streets got super narrow and I met a bus. We decided at that point to get back on the highway. Loved the town.

Yeah, dealing with the income discrepancy is an issue in those Slavic countries. They’ve had it really tough with their wars. We found them nice but stand-off-ish in Croatia. Didn’t drive there because we were on a bike tour. I’ve driven on highways in Spain, no problem, but the UK, yuck! Especially with a manual, driving left handed on the left side of the road. I stalled so much, once in a roundabout in Oxford trying to exit. Doug’s the navigator and all I can say is he wasn’t happy with me. And we’ve usually, actually always, found people to be helpful and friendly in France, Spain, less so in the UK.

driving in different countries is often like a Disney ride isn’t it? Mr Toads wild ride!

Especially in the UK! Their roads are so narrow.

I think our most harrowing drive was to the Cliffs of Mohr in Ireland. Narrow roads, wrong side and a manual shift. I drove and Jim lived to tell about it! Lol. If you’ve never encountered a tour bus in Ireland on roads that are really no more than a bike path, you haven’t lived!

we loved London but the sidewalks were a mad house and people rarely spoke. We went to Windsor the day before Harry & Meghan’s wedding and it was a party atmosphere and somehow the locals could tell we were USA and all wanted to talk. It was so different we wondered if they don’t have time to have fun. BTW, we went to Sky Garden 3 times. Great little coffee bar & scones up there.

I bet that was an energy-filled day! How fun! We drove from London to Edinburgh and after that harrowing adventure (sheep! “roads” that were walking paths! and the crawling traffic on the M1) Doug returned the car and we took the train back to London on our way back. That was so much more relaxing and scenic. Truthfully, next time we go, we might just stick with trains. We did that with the kids for 2 weeks in Italy (Rome-Venice-Florence) and even with limiting the suitcases — because you’ve got to be ready to jump off and go, especially if you’re making a connection — we enjoyed it. But, we are still planning on a driving trip once we get to Edinburgh, and hopefully it won’t be as hectic in the Highlands. You’re making me wonder if a Highlands drive is a good idea.

I rented a car for one day in Scotland and will never do it again. I wanted to see a castle outside Inverness and that seemed to be only way. No tour buses but the round-a-bouts were a challenge! I had dreams of seeing the Cliffs of Mohr and more of Ireland but stuck to the train and missed so much.

Me too 😂😂😂 plus the weather adds an exciting element!

Emily, my brother rented a car for a week in Ireland and said after the first day he was fine. I was happy to have Linda to help me on the turns. You can do it and think of pride you’ll have!! Get an automatic. Shifting with the left hand was really strange.

Thanks, Emily. I shared this piece to my private Delta travel group- I’ll let you know their musings!

I look forward to hearing what they think! Thanks for reading.

I enjoyed the article and would say Linda & I are travelers although I do book lodging in advance. Linda and I traveled to see Neuschwanstein Castle only to find bicycling in the valley and hiking the mountain behind it more to our taste and we skipped the castle with all the “tourist.” We are looking forward to once again being able to wander the road less traveled.

Cycling is a great way to get to know a locale and its people.

If you get a chance Fat Tire Bike Tours in Paris is a great way to see Versailles. We’ve done it twice & were going again last June but…

I checked out the company. Looks like they’ve got Fat Tire Bike tours in a lot of cities. It sounds like a fantastic way to experience historic sites and get a side tour of the cities, too. Thanks for the tip. Maybe you should bump your June trip out to September. . . Barcelona looks interesting, too.

fully endorse Barcelona! One of our favorite places.

It’s on the list!

Well written…. ( and I for sure am a “tourist”. Yep…. cruise ships, nice hotels, fine restaurants…. yep that’s me! ) And boy am I missing it!

I think most people have a bit of tourist and traveler in them. I know I do.

Loved this. Enjoy your Feeding the Famished every time, but loved this.

Why with everything we have and everything we can do once this pandemic nightmare is over, can we not travel for 10 ½ weeks across Europe like these four ladies did? I would love to embark on such an adventure – tourist, traveler or not.

Isn’t what these ladies did amazing? Now I need to dig into the bags of her postcards that I also received. It’s quite the collection of travel memorabilia, and the history of a life.

So glad we caught the travel bug from Grandma, my mother.

I loved your article. I guess for now all we have are memories, just memories. And Jordan and Morro in Manhattan. That picture I would like to keep as well as Doug and the Pyrenees. I’ll slide them into my pictures

Happy Valentines Day

Happy Valentine’s Day to you, too!

Nice job Em! What an grand experience for these four young women. Based on your definitions, I am both a traveler and a tourist. Cannot wait to hop on a bicycle in Europe and anywhere else possible with you and Dr. K.

I’d say I fit into both categories, too. I think many do. Looking forward to hopping on a bike and exploring with you guys, too!

A priceless gift your dinner guest gave you! And then, you shared it with us through the photos and beautiful descriptions, Emily. Thank you

It is a treasure trove of history! They also gave me several bags of postcards from Alma’s other trips. I haven’t gotten to those yet. It’s so beautiful!

How to Write a Love Letter

Crafting the perfect sentimental missive may seem daunting initially, but these comprehensive step-by-step guidelines break the process down to make it more manageable.

Follow this meticulous advice to create wonderfully meaningful love letters that deeply touch your recipient's heart.

To get into a creative headspace, set aside at least an hour without distractions. Play soft instrumental music and brew a warm cup of their favorite coffee or tea.

Dim the lights, light some candles, and gather inspiring romance novels or poems for additional inspiration as needed.

Invest in heavyweight, high-quality stationery or cardstock paper with envelopes for a luxury feel. Stock up on pens in their favorite colors like gold, rose gold, or classic black ink.

Purchase wax seals, floral stamps, calligraphy pen sets, or other embellishments to make it extra special.

Really reflect on your best experiences together from when you first met to recent milestones.

Jot down very specific moments – inside jokes, adventures to favorite locations, sweet gestures during difficult times, or even minor moments that meant a lot to you. Referencing these vividly will add sentimental weight.

Dig deep within to articulate exactly what you feel for them, why you fell in love, how they make you a better person, what you dream for the future, and how treasured they make you feel.

Don't hold back expressing your deepest longings, secret dreams, vulnerabilities, and immense gratitude for their presence in your life. Honesty and openness are vital.

Determine whether you want an uplifting, humorous, sympathetic, lighthearted, or sincere tone, then fashion word choice and stylistic elements accordingly while retaining an underlying romanticism.

Weave in subtle references that have intimate meaning just between the two of you.

Consciously vary sentence structure and incorporate short, impactful statements, longer descriptive passages, and even rhyming poetry or metaphorical imagery.

Use alliterative or repetitive phrasing, clever plays on words, incorporate song lyrics – anything to add lyrical flair.

Consider selectively divulging lesser-known stories from your past, secret dreams you hold for “someday,” or intimate insecurities you struggle with.

Knowing this level of vulnerability brings you closer together. Analyze whether candid revelations or admissions add beauty.

As you draw your poetic prose to a close, unambiguously reaffirm the intensity and eternity of your love, commitment to nurturing your bond no matter what, and unwavering belief in their inner beauty.

Assure them this relationship outpaces all others in importance.

After pouring intense emotional energy into articulating sentiments, set aside your letter overnight. Then, reread again with a fresh perspective.

Refine and polish words that feel clunky, awkward, or ineffective at conveying what you yearn to express.

Once the letter meets your standards, focus on dazzling delivery by rolling it into a scroll tied with ribbon or sealing it with a wax stamp.

Let creativity guide you as you follow these tips for writing stylistically stunning love letters from the heart. Soon, you'll have a memorabilia box filled with handwritten notes your beloved will treasure for decades.

21 Love Letter Examples

Crafting intimate prose from scratch feels intimidating for even seasoned wordsmiths. So, for extra inspiration, here are 21 love letter excerpts exemplifying authenticity across a spectrum – from lighthearted to sensual to anniversary reflection. Let these excerpts ignite ideas!

I still get butterflies remembering our magical first date when we closed down the county fair and rode the Ferris wheel until dawn broke, munching leftover cotton candy. Each time we slow dance in the rain after impromptu picnics, my heart races like it's our first embrace under the fireworks all over again. Even after all these years of cozy late-night talks and long strolls, you still give me that sparkling rush of new love. You’re my forever adventure partner.

I’m already counting down the days until I get to rush into your arms this weekend after our months apart! I’m picturing sunset strolls hand in hand, gazing up at the constellations like old times. Rain or shine, every meal we cook, movie we watch, and nighttime whisper under the blankets will feel extra magical. This getaway is exactly what we need to come back stronger. Distance makes the heart grow fonder, and even more so when it’s you!

I swear you become even more devilishly handsome every single day – those bright eyes make my heart stop, and that crooked smile still gives me weak knees! I lose all sensible thought when you glide your fingertips down my arms or whisper in my ear with that sultry voice. I crave your passionate embrace constantly. How is it possible to desire someone exponentially more with each moment? You leave me absolutely spellbound in the best possible way!

I finally feel like I can breathe easy now that we found each other, after so many near misses discovering partners who didn’t quite understand me. With you, I’m positive I’ve met my soul’s mirror image. Every day, we grow together through joy and sorrow alike. I admire your strength and compassion a little more. I promise to nourish this partnership that makes me the best version of myself – kinder, wiser, braver. However many years we’re granted, I’m devoted to you.

Your loyalty astounds me; I don’t know how I would have survived losing Dad without your listening ear when memories ambushed me. You held space for my grief even during days I lashed out irrationally. But your patience reminded me that the pain would eventually ease. Now, I vow whenever adversity strikes you in the years ahead, I’ll be the rock providing a safe harbor just like you gave me. Our soulmate bond can weather any storm.

Can you believe our half-year mark is already here? We’re basically pros already if those “awards” from our friends’ speeches at dinner last week count! Who knew we’d master compromise, cuisine, and contentment so quickly? Not to mention take home “Best Laugh” and “Most Likely to Make Out in Public!” I’m honored to keep learning how we fit together better each moment. Since time flies when you’re falling in love, here’s to celebrating 125 more six-month milestones!

Fate clearly smiled on me the day our paths crossed! I swear time slows down whenever I stare into your magnificent green eyes – so vast I imagine sailing overseas and discovering new worlds. Your brilliant mind leaves me star-struck, hanging onto every captivating word about quantum physics theory or 16th-century art. And that alluring confidence mixed with sharp wit? Absolutely irresistible! I’m still baffled at what I did to deserve someone so perfect choosing me. Don’t wake me if I’m dreaming!

I’m in awe of your tenacity, battling inner demons day after day. Even when bipolar disorder overwhelms you with tidal waves of emotion, your resolve inspires me to develop more grit in meeting my own challenges. I promise whenever dark, drained days leave you hollow, I’ll be your ray of light until laughter returns. Together, we’ll find strategies so these storms pass more quickly. Please call any hour when clouds roll in. My loyalty is unconditional – both in the brilliant sun and raging rains.

How delightfully bizarre that you guest star nightly in my subconscious escapades recently! My slumbering creativity sure conjures elaborate plot lines – from narrowly escaping smugglers aboard a pirate ship to wedding ceremonies underneath the Northern Lights. No matter the premise, I always feel euphoric finding you by my side all night long. Clearly, my longing heart hopes our tangible adventures mirror these whimsical visions. I’ll manifest it by keeping you ever close both awake and asleep!

That very first night cuddling together on the lumpy plaid couch in our shoebox apartment, I shed the weight of years spent wandering, finally discovering where I belong. Safe in your arms as the rain pattered the windows, I let the tension trapped in my ribs release at long last. Now, even when life’s relentless pacing strains, your steadfast embrace grounds me just the same. While places and faces shift, you remain my constant – my true North Star guiding me home.

Jolting awake to your bellowing ballad was not how I envisioned starting my day, but your sheer enthusiasm for sweeping me off my feet inspired a grin despite the early hour. I know your musical prowess remains a work in progress, much like my dancing skills. But I’ll gladly give up sleep to humor your creative attempts at sweeping me off my feet when passion strikes! Please schedule an encore performance soon – even tone-deaf, your earnest efforts sounded sweeter than any love song.

Who would have guessed when we nervously held hands watching fireworks after our awkward first date that we’d still be cheering each other through life’s highs and lows a decade later? We’ve conquered it all: cross-country moves, job uncertainties, and family health scares. Sure, we sometimes stumbled, but never alone. Now, whatever exhilarating adventures or obstacles this next chapter holds, I’m positive our proven partnership can weather it with laughter. I wouldn’t want to take on this rollercoaster called life with anyone but you!

Your faith in my long-abandoned talents sparked a creative inferno I thought was extinguished forever. Late nights brainstorming tales yet untold while you gently unraveled my writer’s block and reawakened passions I buried after past rejections. But restarting this decades-delayed dream no longer feels daunting with your steady encouragement. Soon, a book brimming with the magical stories we imagined together will line shelves thanks to your inspiration. I’m endlessly grateful for the creative reignition you lit inside me. May our artistic ambitions nourish each other for years to come!

I’m still baffled by the absurd number of “coincidences” revealing that we’re destined soulmates – adventuring abroad months before meeting in our future home country of Portugal, both secretly envisioning matching owl tattoos to symbolize wisdom. And don’t even get me started on randomly referencing the same throwback films from childhood! With all these quirky commonalities plus effortless chemistry, clearly, the universe meticulously crafted us for one another. So let’s toast once more to serendipitous fate guiding us together at long last! No one fits me better.

Before you, I dreaded the chaos of spider infestations, heavy-lifting projects, and draining small talk with strangers. But your reassuring presence makes life’s frustrations melt away. Now rich desserts taste sweeter when you’re across from me. Sunrises dazzle brighter, waking up in your arms. Even mundane moments feel vividly beautiful simply because you’re in them. Although nothing erases earthly troubles permanently, this incredible, passionate love still feels miraculous.

During storms of misunderstanding, you choose to cling tighter rather than push away. When plans crumble unexpectedly, you readily revise rather than guilting me over changing priorities. Even on tiresome, lackluster days, you uplift my spirit, keeping promises to indulge my ice cream cravings. Your steadfast devotion despite life’s hiccups makes weathering adversity with you my safest harbor. I anchor myself in your dependability. You have my endless trust.

My adrenaline and crashing insecurities two years ago meeting you for pizza now seem silly, given how swiftly the conversation flowed into an epic five-hour first date. Yet that jittery excitement still resurfaces every time we slide into our usual corner booth to reminisce on when this exhilarating romance began. I vividly recall grasping your hand that night, marveling to myself I’d just met my soul’s match. And I’m still as confident as ever in that split-second assessment, even 730 days later.

I feel so terrible, recalling the hurtful words I unleashed in irrational anger. You didn’t deserve that explosion over an innocent mistake. My temper sometimes overrides rationality, sabotaging the better angels of my nature. Please give me the grace to grow beyond my knee-jerk reactions so I don’t hurt you again. I promise to restore what my anger briefly broke with patient listening, compromising cooperation, and heaps of affection until I mend your trust in me. I’m imperfect, but I love you so much and hope you’ll forgive me, my love.

Another year older only makes you more distinguished and debonair! With every candle we blow out, wrinkle we earn, and gray hair we sport together, my admiration and appetite for you intensify, not wane. I promise a lifetime of birthday pancake breakfasts in bed, surprise parties with our inner circle, off-key serenades, and adoring embrace on every future trip around the sun with me. Growing old feels magical because I get to do it wrapped in your arms.

Red roses can’t possibly convey a fraction of the burning passion and love I have for you, but I hope they summon even an ounce of the butterflies you give me every single day! I’ll take any excuse this day offers for devouring chocolate strawberries, strolling in the moonlight admiring your stunning beauty, and slow dancing cheek to cheek – reliving our wedding day dance. You always have been my special Valentine, and you always will be.

We’re still savoring the anniversary dinner, reenacting our first moonlit stroll, and reminiscing about monumental moments from when our lives together began fifty wonderful years ago on this very day! And after 168,000 hours of raising children, navigating career twists, fulfilling bucket list dreams hand in hand, I’m even more enamored. As decades pass, I know we’ll cling just as tightly to traditions we cultivated early on – snuggling by the fire pit, watching stars blanket the sky every summer night, and having our morning coffee together. Here’s to keeping the sparks alive through a century together, my love!

17 Creative and Clever Ways to Decorate and Deliver Your Love Letter

A beautifully decorated letter creates lasting sentimental memories, and thoughtful delivery aims to surprise and delight. Going beyond plain stationery proves your partner's uniqueness with customized touches. From little love notes to sealed scrolls, here are 17 ways to wow them with artsy embellishments and strategic presentations.

Make letters extra special by selecting or designing stationery featuring their favorite colors, animals, hobbies, or even an intimate photo of you together. Custom details make your partner feel special .

Add artistic flair by gently diluting watercolor paints to create a light pastel background shade on quality cardstock or heavy stationery before writing your letter on top.

Use a cotton swab to lightly mist your love letter with your partner's favorite scent, such as perfume, cologne, or essential oils. This adds sensory impact when they read your thoughtful words.

Melt wax in their favorite hue, imprint with a custom stamp bearing your initials together, then gently press to the back of the folded letter before mailing for decorative impact.

Collect meaningful blooms like roses, sunflowers, or lilacs to convey symbolism. Place petals delicately between folds or include entire flowers if sealing a scroll with ribbon.

Handwrite letters using quirky hued or metallically flecked ink in pens to contribute stylized flair that captivates your reader as they trace every heartfelt word.

If you’re artistic, illustrate personalized sketches on the letter, such as cartoon versions of you together, inside jokes, or favorite memories. Use your time and talent to personalize your love letter.

Strategically collage sentimental images together thematically depicting your relationship timeline or favorite moments, then feature them as a background visual element tied to what you write in your letter.

Decorate blank spaces by adorning them with thematic stickers featuring romantic symbols like hearts, roses, song lyrics, or words that summarize your affections or future dreams.

Achieve textural beauty by layering thin strips of delicate paper or burlap atop each other in an overlapping crisscross orientation – then write your letter and glue it to these tactile surfaces.

To spark joy when least expected, tuck your love note into random places your partner will discover throughout their day – mailbox, coat pocket, luggage, work bag, pillowcase.

Up the ante by crafting a series of consecutive love notes directing your partner to memento-filled locations, culminating with a gift or date surprise!

For dramatic delivery, stand outside their window at night strumming a guitar and singing a romantic ballad before passing your scroll up to them with a rose clamped between your teeth!

Script your letter on parchment paper, roll it up, and place it in an ornate glass bottle. Use this symbolic vessel when proposing ideas, making wishes, or commemorating monumental moments between you.

Roll up your handwritten note with a pretty ribbon securing it closed. Tuck this into a baked dessert like a cookie or cupcake! Present this after dinner for a sweet reveal.

Ink your words on parchment paper, band both ends with a ribbon, then dramatically unfurl to read aloud on special occasions for theatrical delivery full of old-world charm.

Go above and beyond by dressing formally to deliver your letter on a silver platter while holding a single crimson rose clamped between your teeth. Humorous delivery creates laughs and lifelong memories!

What would you write to your younger self about travel?

What lessons and wisdom could you share with other women?

Nadine’s Travel Story

Several years ago, I took a stand. I decided that I was worthy of receiving love, even if I had no life partner.

I decided to celebrate ME!  I asked myself: ”what is one of the things that makes my heart vibrate with joy?”  The answer: Travel !

Travelling brings me new life experiences by exposing me to different environments and inviting me to try something different.

It helps me discover new aspects of myself.   I would not have found these additional layers of myself if I remained only surrounded by the same daily life events and elements.

Travelling opens my heart by seeing beautiful differences in people, culture, values, lifestyle, natural environment, architecture, and more.

It provides personal accomplishment by learning new things, whether from witnessing a different way of life, listening to a historical narrative from tour operators or discovering how self-reliant you can be when alone in a new country.

Travelling can also be your best friend for life by contributing to remarkable life’s milestones or giving your everyday life a “vacation” when creating excitement and adventure for your mind, body and soul.

A Little Something Extra

Did you know….

How do I love thee? Valentine’s Day Japanese Style

To keep things simple, in Japan, Valentine’s Day cards are not commonly given, and it is traditionally only the women who give gifts. Historically, women were thought to be shy, and this holiday provides the opportunity to express feelings through the giving of a gift.

The most popular item to give is, of course, chocolate! There are two types of chocolate gift-giving: Honmei-Choko, which means “true love chocolate,” and is only given to loved ones; and Giri-Choko, which means “obligation chocolate,” and is given to friends and colleagues as a token of appreciation. Recently, new trends have emerged, and now one can give Tomo-Choko, “friend chocolate,” to one’s friends, and if a man chooses to buck tradition by giving chocolate to a woman, it is called Gyaku-Choko, “reverse chocolate.” Alternatively, if a particular box stands out, and you really want to gift it to yourself, you can purchase Jibun-Choko, “self-chocolate.

How Travel is a Living Love Letter to Yourself…

I was recently asked by a fellow mom how I managed to get through/cope with my kids’ younger years, not keep all my “goodness trapped inside of me”, and re-discover myself and my passions along the way…gah, motherhood can be quite traumatic at times! I only spent a few moments reflecting on this question before I quickly realized the answer: travel.

Travel = Self-care

February, the month of love, is the perfect time to discuss all the ways travel must be a part of your self-care. I cannot think of a greater, more profound way to show yourself some love. Rather than a written letter, you get to live it, and the letter just gets longer and longer!

travel love letter

Travel & Motherhood

It’s one of the hardest things to do as a mom – leave your kids behind. As they get older, it actually becomes even harder! The list of their activities grows longer, the logistics, the need for control. But, when you make travel a priority, you begin to notice its impact. I’ve said this time and time again, I am a better mom (spouse, friend, colleague, and so on) when I fill my cup first. When I travel I am so present, so disconnected from the everyday stressors, and so.damn.alive. My cup is full.

It isn’t an hour here, a half-hour there – it is a fucking experience, and its impact can last a lifetime.

Make It a Priority

It’s interesting that so many people don’t prioritize travel, when in fact, it is the one thing that might change their lives. As a mom, whether we have a supportive spouse or not, whether we work in or out of the house, whatever our circumstances might be – we are wired to take everything on. We want to. We do so much. And, while it’s the most rewarding thing in the world, it is equally the most draining.

To make the decision to travel (and first, budget for travel! ) – be it solo, with your spouse (on a much-needed romantic getaway) or a retreat – is actually doing something so sweet, so intentional and so powerful for yourself (btw, that actually benefits your family too!). I refer to it as travel therapy.

Travel reminds me

…that I am forever young, wild, and free.

…that I am empowered, confident, and worldly.

…to slow down and show myself compassion and care.

…that I have so much yet to learn, see, and experience (which excites me).

…who I truly am or who I still want to become.

…that I love tasting new foods, seeing new sights, hiking challenging terrain, basking in the sun, how therapeutic it is to explore new lands, sit under a palm tree, sip on a spicy margarita, meet new people, dance under the stars, enjoy long uninterrupted conversations, shop from local artisans, watch and listen to the waves crash against the shore, stay at gorgeous boutique hotels, inspire every single sense, discover hidden gems, learn history and immerse myself in different cultures. Hearing my kids tell me that they love and miss me ( hello! ).

More than anything – travel reminds me how to love myself, in the most magical ways.

travel love letter

My Love Letter to Travel

Travel keeps me alive. It keeps me grounded. It keeps me evolving. Travel keeps me anticipating the next adventure. It brings a deeper insight into my hopes and dreams. It shows my kids how to love themselves (repeat that one!).

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

Travel is a love letter to myself,

How about you?

  • A love letter to Australia: wild, inspiring and forever friendly

Card image

“When the sun comes out, it bats its eyelids, it’s glamorous, beautiful, attractive, smart, and it’s very hard to get away from its magnetic pull,” said Baz Luhrmann about Sydney. Except, as anyone who’s been to Australia will attest, that applies to the whole country, not just its showstopping harbour-side city.

travel love letter

Australia is a place where gin-clear water laps golden beaches, rainforests throng with birdsong, stingrays glide through the surf and idyllic vineyards dot rolling hills. It retains a sense of being unexplored while also serving up flat whites and avocado toast (café staples long before Londoners were blathering on about them).

Modern, sophisticated, wild, inspiring and full of opportunity, Australia is a place that makes you feel a washing machine of emotions – especially when you’re bobbing about The Great Barrier Reef with a cold tinny in your hand.

It’s no wonder, then, that Australia has just been awarded the title of ‘most Instagrammable country in the world’ by travel site Big 7 . According to hashtag popularity, the country beat Mexico’s vivid cenotes, Canada’s wilderness and the Maldives’ astonishing coastline to take top spot. Rightly so, too.

travel love letter

I first went to Australia the year I finished university. Armed with a new travel towel, a guide book and a money bag bulging with traveller’s cheques, I spent three months travelling up the East Coast. After a whirlwind trip of pristine beaches, island-hopping, raucous hostels and diversions to the hinterland – which is just as beautiful as the coastline – I was smitten. Three years later I went back for a year.

It was one of my happiest years, and not just because I took a sabbatical from real life. Australia enamoured me with its people, always chatty and kind; with its weather, which gave dreamy summers and sparkling winters; and with its vast changeable landscapes and towering skies, which I walked, ran and rode through, often without seeing anyone else.

You see, for all of Australia’s Instagram hot spots and tourist sites, it’s a big enough place that you can still immerse yourself in its beauty without a self-stick wielding crowd around you.

Take Port Stephens, only two hours’ drive north of Sydney but home to the largest-moving sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere, and the perfect canvas for sand-boarding (it’s so remote that no-one can hear you scream – thankfully).

Then there’s Palm Cove, half an hour north of rowdy Cairns. Instead of partying backpackers, you’ll discover palm trees keeping watch over a ridiculously perfect swathe of white sand.

It should be packed with towel-to-towel sunbathers but it’s so quiet it feels like a secluded island. Best of all: walk through the trees and you’ll find a campsite hidden away.

travel love letter

Even the tourist haven of Byron Bay, with its laid-back atmosphere, coffee shops and markets, manages to scoop up all the tourists, tune them into the same wavelength and make everyone seem like a friendly local. Australia is so friendly that when I returned to London I said “hello” to strangers on the street. I soon remembered that’s an Aussie thing. In Britain, people just think you’re trying to sell them something.

Australia does big, show-off vistas better than anywhere else (just take a look at Fraser Island, Uluru, The Whitsunday Islands or Western Australia’s Kimberley region), but there are subtle snippets of beauty at every turn.

Take the ferry that spends all day chugging back and forth between Sydney Harbour and Manly. Drifting past the Opera House, with the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the distance, it feels like a bucket-list experience yet this is how people commute .

In the Hunter Valley, the place to go for some of the country’s best wines, one of the highlights is actually wobbling and weaving between them on a bike.

If you think Australia is only for beach bums, you need to take another look at #australia on Instagram. Alongside the blazing skies, aquamarine waters and lush rainforest you’ll also see world renowned art, joyous Mardi Gras parties, Aboriginal culture and a booming cafe and foodie scene that will give you a head-start on the next food trends to hit our own shores.

We talk a lot about work/life balance in Britain but for a first-hand experience of the perfect mix you need only visit Australia, a country where an after-work beach trip is commonplace, weekend barbies are the norm and the beer is always cold.

In the words of Lara Bingle in the infamous Tourism Australia advert: “Where the bloody hell are you?”

Love Letter to Cruising

travel love letter

Setting sail to see the world by ship is a truly special experience. The smell of the sea, the breeze at your back, all the amenities you could hope for in one central place, and those views! Oh, how we miss the views.

In case it’s not obvious, we clearly miss cruising the globe – call it our version of cabin fever! Between the start of Spring, temperatures rising and the fond recollection of previous charters, our team is patiently waiting to board once again.  To tie us over, our ATI Travel Advisors have dug into our memory trove to share some of the most incredible sights, experiences, and people we’ve encountered.

travel love letter

“One of my favorite parts of cruising is being able to sit outside on our balcony and enjoy a glass of our favorite pink bubbles as the ship sails away from the most beautiful places on earth. I also really enjoy the all-inclusive aspect and feeling like you don’t have to sign a check every time you leave the dinner table. And of course, the most wonderful part of all is the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and establish friendships that have proven to last a lifetime! Both Ryan and I terribly miss cruising and we are so ready to get back on board! We may just sail for an entire year once the ships open up and we’ll invite all of our ATInsiders to join us!” – Malaka

“My favorite cruise memory is sailing down the fjord heading to Kotor, Montenegro. The sail in or out takes about 2 hours and it is enchanting – the views are fabulous as you sail quite close to shore winding through the fjord. The town of Kotor at the end of the fjord is a mini- Dubrovnik with a beautiful harbor. The town is old and magical, if you’re a “Game of Thrones” fan then you would love it as the series was filmed in Croatia and Montenegro.” – Amanda

“Cruising the Croatian coast by gulet was one of my most enjoyable trips. The traditional design yachts are exclusive use with all the flexibility you could desire from meals to drinks to activities and itinerary. Visiting small towns and villages along the coast that would otherwise be inaccessible and cruising through the brightest deep blue water I’ve ever seen was something really special.” – Michael

travel love letter

“Our ship glided through water the color of jade, sailing past Cat Ba Island as we entered HaLong Bay aboard the Regent Mariner . It was daybreak, hauntingly quiet and the morning mist was heavy in the air with sunlight backlighting hundreds of limestone formations. Breathtaking is an understatement, and my only reaction was pure awe. I realized I am one of the luckiest people on earth to have witnessed that unique display from Mother Nature. This memory will remain with me for all of my days.” – Michelle

travel love letter

“I had the opportunity to travel down the Ganges River in India, the most sacred river to Hindus. It is a lifeline to millions of Indians who live along its course and depend on it for their daily needs. It was an honor to visit local villages and experience life along the banks. Not only were the off-board experiences memorable, being on board the Uniworld ship was very special.  They incorporated cooking classes, the culture and history, and the wellness that is famous from the region! From learning to make chai tea to watching Bollywood dancers on the bow of the ship, cruising opened my eyes both onboard and off, and created a greater appreciation for the destination and its people!” – Isabelle

travel love letter

“Sailing along the coast of Turkey by gulet is my favorite travel experience yet (right up there with Safari) as I loved being able to see the small ports and unique towns dotted along the coast that I wouldn’t necessarily have visited otherwise. Waking up in the morning by jumping into the bright turquoise waters of the Aegean sea before breakfast is the only way I wish to wake up from here on! Oh, and I got engaged to my now-husband on that cruise so it feels a little extra special!” – Alexis

If you’re just as eager as we are to get back on board, many of our cruise line global travel partners are currently running amazing promotions for future sailings. 10 Romantic Time Travel Movies to Binge Watch: I’ll Love You to the End of Time

These are some of the best time travel romance movies!

10 Romantic Time Travel Movies to Watch pinterest image

Time travel as a genre is always fascinating in any medium, whether a book, movie, TV show or comic. The possibility of meeting anyone in existence, going to places long forgotten, and uncovering secrets of well-loved icons of the past and maybe even the future gives a special allure to time travel romance movies.

romantic time travel movies list with image of Somewhere in Time.

The fantastical direction this genre takes adds elements of magic, naivete, and touches of illusion, appealing to older and younger viewers alike. Add into this the sprinkle of romance, and you have me hooked.

If I get the chance to watch Shakespeare wooing a girl from the 21st century using poems that have become cult classics, I’m grabbing the popcorn and switching my phone off.

RELATED: 80 OF THE BEST ENTERTAINING TIME TRAVEL TV SHOWS YOU NEED TO WATCH

Like most people, I grew up watching time travel movies. Consequently, they have become my favorites. For example, we can all appreciate Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure or watching Hermione travel back in time to see herself punch Draco in the face. (Not only a win for Harry Potter fans but for girls all around.)

Meanwhile, Doctor Who (2005) is my first exposure to real romance and time travel. With the Doctor’s companions all falling for him, he initially only falls for Rose (Nine and Ten).

As a result, it had millions of us hoping he would appear in our living rooms, ready to take us on our own adventure. Since then, there was no going back. There are just so many romantic time travel movies calling out to be binged.

Here is a list of my personal favorite romantic time travel movies that have thus far survived the test of time. However, I will admit this list is not exhaustive (limiting the films to 10 was difficult).

10 ROMANTIC TIME TRAVEL MOVIES TO BINGE WATCH

(In No Particular Order)

the lake house still with Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves

#1: ABOUT TIME (2013)

About Time

Without a doubt, this is a humorous and engaging retelling of a classic boy trying to win over a girl story. Tim wishes to change his life and get a girlfriend. With this intention, enter Mary.

Tom falls for her and is relentless and tenacious in his pursuit, all thanks to a family secret. The men in his family can travel through time! What a secret to have, and at 21, your options are endless.

About Time beautifully captures the fun-loving side of romance. And, as viewers, we see the benefits of having such a gift and just how painful the gift can be.

For this reason, we see the love between a man and woman and the close relationship between Tim and his father, played by the talented Bill Nighy . Have tissues ready, as poignant scenes will get you teary-eyed.

Content Note: This film is rated 12A in the UK for mild profanity, nudity, violence, and moderate love scenes. For the same reason, About Time is a mild rated R in the United States.

#2: THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE (2009)

Romantic Time Travel Movies - The Time Traveler's Wife

This falls quite high on my list of must-watch romance films in general as it has sweeping romance and not to mention swoon-worthy Eric Bana as the protagonist. The film beautifully interweaves through different phases of time, keeping the viewer enthralled.

It follows the life of Clare (Rachel McAdams) and how she meets Henry (Eric Bana), or rather how he encounters her. Clare and Henry ‘meet’ in a library. Soon, they both know what Henry is and what he can do, which is being involuntarily thrown through time, forwards or backward.

The movie’s most interesting aspect is that, despite Henry being the traveler, Clare knows more about him. She’s even aware of their relationship during their ‘first meeting’.

You can assume this is not their first meeting without giving too much away. The story follows them through their life together, how his continued absence becomes a toll on Clare, and over time, it delves into the life of living with a time traveler.

Could you live with someone who knows your future? They will know exactly where your life together could end up. Instead of going for the fated lovers’ angle, this looks at how fate may have brought them together, but should they have walked away?

Content Note: This film is rated 12A in the UK for mild sensuality, nudity, and profanity. In the US, the film is rated PG-13.

#3: SOMEWHERE IN TIME (1980)

Somewhere in Time

If you prefer sweet innocent love stories with classic romance, Somewhere in Time will be perfect for you.

Set in 1972, Christopher Reeve stars as student Richard Collier who travels to Mackinac Island to stay at the Grand Hotel, where he sees a portrait of a woman who he becomes enamored with.

He finds out she was a famous stage actress who has passed away. In this obsession with the picture, he finds a way to go back in time to meet her.

Using methods of self-hypnosis, he is able to get back to 1900 and meet Elise McKenna, but what fate is in store for two people with such a big ‘time’ difference? Get ready to fall in love with the characters, cinematography, music, and love stories all over again.

Fun tidbit: Somewhere in Time was nominated for an Oscar for best costume design.

Content Note : This film is rated PG for mild profanity and sensuality.

#4: THE LAKE HOUSE (2006) AND IL MARE (2002)

The Lake House

The Lake House is a somber story, showing love with a facet of yearning, similar to Somewhere in Time . Both have protagonists who are trapped in different times.

Kate Forrester (Sandra Bullock) moves to a new house, leaving behind a letter for the next tenant. The person who reads the letter, Alex Wyler (Keanu Reeves), realizes some unusual things are happening.

Events mentioned in the letter have yet to occur. They come to the realization that they are exactly two years apart, writing from different times.

This charming movie weaves a beautiful story that will appeal to anyone in a long-distance relationship. You will be able to relate to the dates they attempt to go on and how they try and share experiences with each other.

It will make you appreciate that you are at least a phone call away. The ending of the movie will have you on the edge of your seats, and the revelations revealed will make you want to believe in fate and kismet take your pick.

Special mention to the original movie Il Mare (2002), a Korean production and equally a must-watch if you don’t mind subtitles.

Content Note: This film is rated PG with mild profanity, alcohol, and drugs.

#5: BACK TO THE FUTURE PART III (1990)

10 Romantic Time Travel Movies to Binge Watch: I'll Love You to the End of...Err...Time: Back to the Future Part III

If you are not familiar with this series, what are you doing? Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and the iconic DeLorean made a generation of kids dream about hoverboards and Nike trainers.

This is the third installment of the series, giving more focus to the ‘Doc’ Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd).

Set against the backdrop of the 1885 old west (and true to the name), we get standoffs, brawls, and romance. Meanwhile, Marty travels to 1885 and is stuck because his car breaks down.

Of course, he has a run-in with ‘Mad Dog’ Biff Tannen and his unruly gang. (Trying to send Marty back with their limited resources makes you appreciate a lot of amenities we take for granted.)

In this process, Emmett meets a school teacher, Clara Clayton (Mary Steenburgen), who is a science geek just like him, and soon a romance blossoms.

It is surreal and sweet to see Doc so enamored and unable to figure out how to act. Furthermore, the romance breathes new life into his character and shows an angle we never thought we needed.

In the climax of the movie, there is a race against time to get the DeLorean fixed and Marty back to the present day. Ultimately, even as a sequel, Back to the Future Part III is brilliant.

Content Note: This film is rated PG with moderate profanity, mild sensuality, nudity, and violence.

#6: MIDNIGHT IN PARIS (2011)

midnight in paris; romantic time travel movies

‘ You’re in love with a fantasy.’ ‘I’m in love with you.’

Woody Allen does it again, giving us a spellbinding movie with sophisticated and witty characters. He portrays Paris in a way that will make you want to go there and explore.

Winner of an Oscar, Midnight in Paris follows Gil (Owen Wilson) and Inez (Rachel McAdams) on vacation in Paris, where he wishes to move after they marry.

However, his wife-to-be doesn’t see the magic of the city, hoping to settle in America instead. In the meantime, Gil struggles to write his first novel and takes a strange late-night stroll through Paris, getting an invite to a party that includes guests such as Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Gertrude, and many others who frequented the famous salon of Stein.

It is up to the audience to decide if this is time travel or just the fantasy of a desperate writer who is in love with the golden era of the ’20s. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie because it gave a glimpse of how some of my favorite writers would interact.

This is what other genres cannot do, transport and introduce characters and figures who we would love to meet. This charming film will have you falling in love with the characters and the dialogue.

The superb acting by Wilson portrays an awe-struck, enthusiastic writer who meets his heroes. There is no real story to follow, but rather more events that unfold and how the characters react to them. But life is like this sometimes: we don’t know where things are going until later on.

Content Note: This film is rated 12A  in the UK and PG-13 in the U.S. for mild profanity, sensuality, and nudity.

#7: 13 GOING ON 30 (2004)

13 Going on 30

13 Going on 30 is a reverse-coming-of-age time travel romantic comedy. Jenna (Jennifer Garner) makes a wish on her thirteenth birthday, wanting to be older after going through an embarrassing ordeal.

Jenna wishes to make her older, and it is fulfilled magically. She wakes up the next day to find she is weeks from her thirtieth birthday, has a dream job as a magazine editor, a car, and a very attractive boyfriend.

Everything that anyone could want, but she is still not happy, which pushes the story toward what she truly desires.

This approach is always fun to watch, including hilarious scenes where the protagonist tries to understand the new circumstances and her new body. I admit it’s nothing new in terms of what we can expect, but Garner portrays the character’s innocence and naivete so well.

We see beautiful shots of New York City, which will make you want to book your flight and get over there. However, the surprise in this movie is Mark Ruffalo, who plays Matt, the high school best friend.

Seeing him in this role will be new and a fresh take for fans of the Marvel world. One of the best moments in the movie is the Michael Jackson ‘Thriller’ dance which will leave you astounded and get you on your feet.

Content Note: This film is rated 12A in the UK and PG-13 in the U.S. for mild profanity and suggestive content.

#8: WINTER’S TALE (2014)

Winter's Tale - Romantic Time Travel Movies

Winter’s Tale is set in 1895 on the streets of New York and is based on the novel of the same name. Peter Lake (Colin Farrell) is a seasoned thief who enters the home of Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay). Beverly catches him in the act.

They both fall in love, and she tells Peter a story about how everyone is born with a miracle inside them. This is the theme for the whole movie so keep this in mind while watching.

The movie boasts a lot of big stars: Russell Crowe, Will Smith, and William Hurt, who all play fantastical characters brilliantly. The story jumps to modern times showing us Peter again. But he has amnesia, setting the story for the rest of the movie. The search for his memories and lost story.

Romance like this is always beautiful to watch, even though the audience and characters know it will not be the happy ending we all hope for.

Fans of Downton Abbey will recognize Findlay as Lady Sybil Crawley, carrying off the character of Beverly competently, with a timeless beauty that is only enhanced because we know the fate of the character.

Farrell is exquisite as always, playing his role as an Irish thief so convincingly. There are many twists and turns to keep you entertained during the second half, which is worth the effort.

Content Note: This film is rated 12A in the UK and PG-13 in the U.S. for violence and sensuality.

#9: IF ONLY (2004)

If Only

If Only uses the winning formula that led Groundhog Day (1993) to success, where the day is on repeat. We have Samantha (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ian (Paul Nichols), who are a typical couple, showing the relationship and fights.

Tragedy strikes when Samantha has a car accident leaving a heartbroken and grief-stricken Ian. But fate gives him another chance to back in time to try and change events. He lives the same day again and, like any sensible hero, tries to alter the events leading up to her accident.

It’s a sweet story showing the importance of cherishing the people close to you. The film further makes you wonder about how you would react in this situation. Would you be able to change anything?

The story moves at a good pace, keeping audiences on edge as to whether Ian will succeed. Very beautiful moments occur between the two as Ian knows what will come.

He tries his hardest to make everything perfect (and take notes, guys – ahem, ahem). Tissues may be needed; you have been warned.

Content Note: This film is rated PG-13 for some sensual material.

#10: KATE & LEOPOLD (2001)

kate and leopold - Romantic Time Travel Movies

‘I’m not very good with men.’ ‘ Perhaps you haven’t found the right one.’

This time travel romance movie captures everyone’s heart because Leopold (Hugh Jackman) comes from 1876 and has a romantic, classic approach to love.

He has purity dripping from every glance and every word he speaks. It would make any girl fall head over heels for the chivalrous Leopold.

So, what chance does Kate (Meg Ryan) have? Leopold needs to marry someone for wealth, with a dwindling purse and big dreams to pursue. He enters a portal transporting him to modern times. This blows him away to see the sights and progress.

He meets Kate, a market researcher who is cynical but ambitious. They get close but inevitable differences arise, and he returns back to his time.

Kate & Leopold also provides well-written comedic scenes with Kate’s brother, an actor assuming Leopold is deep in character. For fans of epic romantic movies from the ’90s, this 2001 film is equally awesome. Plus, any fan of Jackman will enjoy seeing him in this swoony role.

Content Note: Rated PG-13 for brief strong language.

Did you find one of your favorite movies about time travel and love? If you had the chance to have one of these romances, which one would it be?

Found some new ones for my list, so thanks! I love Hugh Jackson in Kate and Leopold – he plays it so straight it makes the whole thing so much funnier.

Though I haven’t seen it in a while now, I remember that I liked “Lake House,” and I just started to watch “About Time” last night. It’s nothing like I expected, but so far I quite like it! 🙂

Man, Rachel McAdams is all about that time travel life!

Oh, I hoped I’d find a new romantic time travel movie to add to my watched list, but I’m afraid I’ve already seen them all. Lovely curated list, tho!

A long time ago there lived a scientist who would hardly ever venture outside. His life was a lonely one, with long days of research and experiments. It was his ambition to create a potion to see into the future. He had over years collected hundreds of herbs and combined them in various ways until eventually, he was on the brink of a breakthrough…

Where am I able to find the remainder of this story? One mustn’t dangle a carrot expecting no one to bite! Rachel

All these are lovely —- another good one is “1994 Timecop” with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Mia Sara — thriller & romance

I can’t seem to find the movie which was based on a short story “ Christopher Frame “ a photo restorer who time travels ,.falls in love and stays there , tried to lookup but there is no information about it ,I can’t remember the name of the movie or episode either for the love of God ,If anyone knows about it please let me know ,thanks

Another outstanding time travel movie is the 1998 Hallmark Hall of Fame production “The Love Letter”, starring Campbell Scott and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Aired in the late 90s, it’s about an engaged civil war buff who finds hidden letters in an old desk which were written by an unmarried woman in 1863. He is compelled to respond to her and even though he lives in the late 20th century she receives his letters and they begin a correspondence through time. This obviously causes a big problem for his life with his fiance. It’s an excellent movie based on a short story by Jack Finney. Finney is the author of two great time travel novels, Time And Again and From Time to Time.

Hi Everybody, I read through the candidates for best time travel romance, all of which I have seen. I agree with your choices, but not exactly in that order. Although they were all great movies, it is “Somewhere in Time” that takes the number one spot. I was happy to see that at least you gave them the 3rd spot, but, in reality, it was the one movie that expressed so beautifully the concept that love transcends time and in the end, true love brings them together as they slip off into eternity.

There is one more movie to which I would give honorable mention. That is the 1979 movie “Time After Time” where the prolific writer HG Wells pursues Jack the Ripper into the future where Hubert (Malcolm Mcdowell) meets Mary Steenburgen and falls in love. This is another great movie. Thanks, DAD

Hi Dad! I agree with you that Somewhere in Time is the best time-travel romance movie. 🙂 Such a beautiful film!

The Love Letter Poster

Scotty Corrigan buys an antique desk and finds a Civil War-era letter inside it, written by a woman who died over a hundred years ago. Fancifully, he writes and mails a reply...only to have it reach its destination in the past. As Elizabeth and Scotty continue their remarkable correspondence, they find themselves falling in love, and more than restless about their impending, respective, marriages. -- IMDB- Kathy Li
