Best things to do in Punta Cana and around

' src=

Punta Cana in the far east of the Dominican Republic is one of the most popular holiday resorts on the beautiful Caribbean island thanks to its dream beaches and its own international airport. Most holidaymakers are drawn either to the long, lively Bávaro Beach north of the airport or to the quieter Cap Cana in the south, which is characterised by luxurious resorts. The beautiful beaches like Macao beach could easily tempt you to spend your entire holiday in a deckchair, but that would be a shame. After all, there are sights and natural attractions around Punta Cana that you should not miss. Take a rental car for a few days or join organised excursions and really get to know the Dominican Republic!

Table of contents

What to do in Punta Cana

One thing first: Punta Cana is not a place name. The term encompasses several beachfront holiday resorts that have grown up around the two towns of Verón and Bávaro on the eastern tip (Punta in Spanish) of the Dominican Republic. Both offer visitors rather few attractions. If you are looking for sights in Punta Cana, you will have to travel a little further by car or on organised tours. Here is our top five:

Scape Park and Hoyo Azul

The number one attraction and thing to do in Punta Cana is Scape Park, an extensive park area with the Hoyo Azul (“blue hole”) as the star attraction: a beautiful blue lagoon in the heart of a walk-in cave system where you can jump in to cool off in the natural pool. Another cave hides another swimming opportunity in an underground lake reminiscent of Mexican cenotes. Around these natural attractions, other entertainment options for tourists have sprung up, including an animal park and a great zipline . You can’t miss this one, because at the top end you have a beautiful view over the region and at the bottom end you go swimming.

A view of the blue lagoon of Hoyo Azul, at the edge of which there is a boardwalk with railings.

Bávaro Adventure Park

Adventure activities for the whole family is offered by the Bávaro Adventure Park with a wealth of different activities such as ziplining, buggy tours and horseback rides, as well as a climbing park and a large swimming pool to cool off in. A tip: you can save money with combined tickets!

ScubaDoo Underwater Experience

Sometimes you’re a little annoyed that you don’t have a diving licence to explore the magnificent underwater world of the tropics? Then ScubaDoo might be the right thing for you: You get a kind of helmet with a diving mask and a hose that supplies you with air, almost like scuba diving. Then you go down to a depth of five metres into the sea, where you move around on an underwater scooter and are soon surrounded by colourful fish. Afterwards, you can take a ride on a glass-bottom boat, where you can watch the colourful hustle and bustle underwater again at your leisure.

Saona Island

If you want to see sights that nature has created in Punta Cana, you can book a boat trip to Saona Island in Cotubanamá National Park. This beautiful island has only one permanent settlement, the fishing village of Mano Juan, and is otherwise completely covered by jungle. However, the idyllic palm beaches will hardly give you that Robinson Crusoe feeling, as numerous motorboats and catamarans swarm out daily to bring tourists from Punta Cana or the cruise port in La Romana to the island. Tip: Take fins and a snorkel with you and dive down before the hustle and bustle to quietly observe the colourful sea creatures off the coast in turquoise waters.

The capital of La Altagracia province is the closest major city to Punta Cana and well worth a day trip. Here you can experience the Dominican Republic from its authentic side. Admire the extraordinary architecture of the Basilica de La Altagracia and the much older church of San Dionisio before learning about the history and culture of the region in the air-conditioned La Altagracia Museum. If you still have time and energy, continue to San Rafael de Yuma . Here you can visit the home of the Spanish navigator Juan Ponce de Léon, who set out from here to found the first European settlement in Puerto Rico, and get an idea of life on the island in the 16th century.

The unusual construction of the Basilica of Higüey with two oval arches. On the highest of them is a cross.

Other things to do around Punta Cana

If you don’t mind a longer journey, you can visit sights outside Punta Cana such as Los Haitises National Park south of the Samana Peninsula. This 1,600-square-kilometre region with extensive mangrove forests, caves and coral islands offers a faint glimpse of what the Caribbean islands looked like before Europeans arrived. No wonder filming for the blockbuster Jurassic Park took place here! You can take a motorboat through the national park or explore the blue waters yourself by kayak and on foot along hiking trails.

The drive to the Dominican capital Santo Domingo is comparably far. It boasts that it is the oldest city in the New World built by Europeans. In the historic old town with its charming alleys, the cathedral and the Alcázar de Colón, you will definitely feel transported back a few centuries.

What you should bear in mind when visiting Punta Cana’s attractions

A holiday in the Caribbean is best in the winter months: The perfect time to travel is December to March. Since the resorts are usually full, the sights in Punta Cana are correspondingly busy. Then it makes sense to book organised tours at the hotel: You won’t have to worry about parking and will often be able to pass others through the group entrance with the group tickets you already have.

Find out more about the best destinations in December.

But even in less busy months, a group tour can be the more comfortable and uncomplicated option, for example, when a large motorboat is waiting for your group on boat trips to Saona Island or through the mangroves of Los Haitises and you don’t have to take care of transport yourself.

One last tip: A few words of Spanish will be enormously helpful! Make sure to learn some basic words when travelling to Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic.

Out and about in Punta Cana: Things to do for every taste

Whether family-friendly facilities like the Bávaro Adventure Park, the Juanillo beach, the quiet beauty of the national parks or culture and history in the cities: You’ll find things to do around Punta Cana that will enhance your holiday. So get out of your deck chair and experience the real life of the Dominican Republic!

Staying in a Swim-Up Suite, mom and dad and two kids were comfortable with a king-sized bed and pull-out queen, with a shared swimming pool right off our deck," Aimee White Beazley , a Travel + Leisure contributor, said.

For an even more special experience, stay in The Pineapple , an homage to the famous undersea dwelling from SpongeBob SquarePants . The lodging includes two bedrooms, three bathrooms, and an infinity pool. According to Beazley, it's "Instagram-worthy."

The Aqua Nick Water Park, Character Central, and Club Nick will entertain the kids, and adults can relax in the spa. Restaurants feature Italian cuisine, Asian fusion, poolside casual dining, and more. "The hotel’s nine restaurants included family favorite, BRGRS, and parents loved a night out at Verdello Sicilian Kitchen, while kids were safely entertained at Club Nick, a kids-only club," Beazley told T+L.

"The Hyatt Ziva affords the perfect contemporary perch from which to absorb it all. I was super impressed from the moment I entered the property's expansive lobby, with its lush greenery hanging overhead and bamboo-lined ceilings. My suite was just as dazzling; sleekly appointed with local cultural accents, unobstructed in its seaside panorama."

Musicians and dancers provide nightly entertainment in the resort's outdoor amphitheater. For young visitors, there's a kids' club and supervised games, and guests ages 13-17 can experience Formula 1 racing at the teen club.

As for Japhe, he noted: "I enjoyed more of the same from the pools and hot tubs, seated at the edge of the playa. There are several dining options on the property, including the beachside Chinola. I found the best dishes at El Mercado, where a daily buffet focuses on Caribbean flavors."

"There's much to explore across the grounds, including an eco-park populated by local flora and fauna," said Japhe. "I encountered several peacocks while strolling the grounds. There is a good degree of walking to be expected here — for me, that was more of a feature rather than a flaw."

Looking for feedback after a 'difficult' time at Impressive hotel, punta cana through Tui

Attempting to be objective but...thanks for your thoughts

' class=

I have no idea what you are asking. Perhaps re-word what you are in search of.

Hi, who do you work for, I am going to be listing a complaint to Tui about the holiday experience

I'm looking for indi ideal objective feedback

Can't help you with this post as you tell us absolutely nothing about this so called experience as per post #1 asking you the same thing.

Simply asking if anyone else had bad experience with Tui or/and Impressive hotel etc

punta cana trips tui

You need to list your issues or this is going nowhere.

The regular posters on here are amazing, it’s frustrating that no details are mentioned.

Any complaint is with TUI and once home difficult to raise .

Reviews of the hotel are mixed on Tripadvisor .

So if you want information regarding your holiday can you kindly explain your points.

Ok, so I didn't put my negatives on so as not to influence any comments...I'll just leave it there and I guess Tui will keep on conning people.

Like any holiday company there’s good/bad and yes TUI have had some bad press here in the UK .

But they are a huge part of the UK market flown twice this year Cape Verde /Mexico very good from start too finish

What to expect

Pure relaxation awaits on this trip to Saona Island. If you're looking for that perfect Insta-ready escapade, you've found it. Saona is a textbook tropical daydream of an island, swathed in exotic flora and fringed with swaying palm trees, powder white sands and endless blue-green waters. You'll reach the island in a combination of catamaran and fast boat, with an outbound snorkel stop.

Ramon, one of our expert guides, says, ‘We work hard to protect our pristine environment and all the species that make it so special. We were the first country to protect manatees by law, and we have a turtle conservation programme here on Saona, too.' The island and surrounding sea are of such importance for their biodiversity that they're protected as a national park.

You'll set sail from Bayahibe into the sun-splashed seas surrounding Cotubanama National Park. Along the way, you'll stop to swim or snorkel among shoals of tropical fish at a shallow pool formed by sandbanks in the middle of the sea. Once you arrive at Saona, you'll have plenty of time to soak up those dazzling vistas and snap lots of photos. Perhaps you'll take a barefoot stroll along the 1km-long private beach, or maybe you'd prefer simply relaxing with a cocktail. Although Saona is one of the country's most-visited areas, there's an exclusive beach area reserved just for you. Another highlight is the surf'n'turf lunch at a beachfront restaurant. And don't worry about getting thirsty – all your drinks are included.

Terracross Tour of the Countryside from Punta Cana

There are few better ways to see the unspoilt Dominican countryside than a Terracross safari. You'll drive through winding rural dirt tracks through plantations all the way to the famous Domitai Cave Park and a replica Taino village. Luis, one of our local guides, says, ‘We are the world's largest producer of organic, fair trade cocoa. Around half of our cocoa is made into the finest chocolate you can buy. So, trying traditional cocoa products in a Dominican farm is a real treat, even if you don't have a sweet tooth.'Kick off with some mud-splattered, high-octane fun as you ride cross-country to a cenote cave for a swim in the Domitai Cave Park. These sinkholes with clear, fresh water are perfect for a cooling dip. As it's a private venue, there are fewer crowds and vendors than at other cenotes. You'll also get to savour some local specialities such as empanadas and pineapple wine. Next, drop by a recreated Taino village – they were the aborigines who lived on the island before Columbus arrived – where you'll observe a folkloric show.Plus, you'll learn all about the production of local crops which are so critical to the local economy – coconut oil, sugarcane, coffee and chocolate as well as the unique Dominican chocolate tea. During your visit you'll have the chance to try some of these local products, along with the national tipple, mamajuana. Overall, a great close-up view of the Dominican countryside and local culture – on a thrilling Terracross safari.

Despite looking so tempting with their cool aquamarine water, the Taino people never swam in the cenotes or used the water because of their belief that they were a gateway to the underworld.' Plus, you'll enjoy a Dominican dinner and an open bar followed by live music and dancing around a bonfire. To kick off your all-action evening, you'll power through the Dominican countryside, zoom along dirt tracks and watch as the landscape transforms from day to night. Guided by torchlight, you'll continue your journey to take a swim in a natural cave pool, known as a cenote, with atmospheric lighting. And if you choose the safari truck option, you'll also get to visit the eerie depths of Yara Cave. With flaming torches lighting the way, you'll make your way back to base for a well-earned drink and a tasty dinner of local cuisine. Alex, one of our expert guides, says, ‘I'm a native and have been guiding tours here for more than 10 years. You'll learn about local history, plants and crops, and get to try home-grown coffee and fruit, too.'Fun facts, exotic wildlife and the chance to take a river swim – this tour has it all. After pick-up from your hotel, we'll head deep into the Dominican outback. And because we'll visit the less-travelled parts of the country, it helps support areas that don't usually benefit from tourism. What's more, you'll be part of a small group of just 16 guests, minimising our carbon footprint. ‘It's a great way to get in touch with nature and give back to the rural community,' says Alex. Rolling through the forest-carpeted countryside, we'll arrive at a ranch, where we begin with complimentary drinks and the lowdown on the day ahead.Set off trekking through luxuriant, peaked landscapes as your friendly guide shows you around. You'll meet the locals and taste locally grown seasonal products – from farm to fork, it doesn't get much fresher. Be sure to keep an eye out for rare plants, birds and wildlife, too. Being part of this experience is a boost to wildlife conservation efforts in the region. Finally, we'll head to the River Anamuya, where you can cool off with a well-earned swim and a thirst-quenching coconut water.
