Handmade Travel Home Decor: Home Decoration for Travelers

I love travel themed items and have previously written posts on some of my favorite handmade travel themed wedding products and travel themed jewelry . I love globes, vintage maps, vacation photos, old postcards, etc. and love when I find items that incorporate travel themed elements into useful home decorations and furnishings. So we decided to put together another list on some great handmade travel themed home decor items.

These include pieces for all parts of the home from the office to the bedrooms and include everything from fridge magnets and lampshades to wall art and shower curtains. The items were also chosen to fit a wide range of decorating tastes and budgets with most items ranging in the USD $20 to $150 range.

Just so you know, many of the home decor items on this list we physically reviewed. Some were items we purchased or received as gifts, and others were given to us by artists for review. The other pieces are just ones I loved when searching for travel themed home furnishings online.

The majority of the items on our list are handmade or hand customized items, made by a single artist, family, or a small business. We love supporting these great individual artists and small businesses.

One of the things I love most about shopping for items on Etsy is that most artists can do personalized or custom items. Many of these items on this list are truly unique and many of them can be personalized for you.

We strove to include travel home decor pieces from around the world and items came from a number of places in North America, Europe, Australia, Africa, and Asia. However, the majority are from artists in the United States and United Kingdom.

If you are looking for a gift for your favorite traveler, but don’t find it here, consider checking out our guide to gifts for travelers . It contains 75 gift suggestions that should suit any budget or type of traveler!

We are happy to answer any questions you may have about any of these items included. We hope that this list helps inspire you to show your wanderlust in decorating your own home!

MOVA Solar-Powered Globes

I am in love with the solar-powered globes from MOVA . We first spotted them spinning in a window display in a shop in Venice, Italy. We assumed they were spinning because of their base so were surprised when the shopkeeper put them in our hands and they kept spinning!

The globes spin on their own using solar power and magnets so they don’t need to be plugged in and there are no batteries to be changed. They just need light, either indirect light from the sun or indoor lights. They can also be put onto about any base.

In addition to world maps, they also sell ones depicting planets, the moon, artwork, and sports teams. They come in a variety of color schemes with several base options.

You can personalize the title and legends of each map if you wish.

We have had one of these (in the vintage rustic style) on our own walls for years and we love it. The pin board comes professionally packaged and easy to hang on your wall as all the fixtures are included. Each map also comes with a set of two colors of pins.

I love traveling as much as I love handmade products! So whenever I travel, I make sure that I get to purchase handcrafts especially those made by local community artisans. There is just one time, I went to Chiang Mai in Thailand, I never had the chance to actually buy my souvenir, but thankfully I found a store called localbazaar who sells handmade crafts from Chiang Mai!

Hi Ruth, Yes, handmade travel products make for great souvenirs. If you don’t pick up something while traveling, you can always seem to find something online out there 😉 Best, Jessica

I’ve always wanted a hollow book. My mandatory entry I hit too soon it was 17, 15, and 7. Hope I can still be entered.

This post is so much fun!!! We actually own 2 of these… the map pin boards (which we got one year for our girls) and the scratch off map (which my daughter got for my husband). We always had fun moving the pin to our “next planned destination.” My husband loves maps, and these are terrific gifts. I recently received coasters from a friend that have outlines of areas in the city where we both used to live. I loved it… these are perfect gifts for the traveler in your life!

70+ World Travel Themed Home Decor Ideas

Pretty soon, I’ll have my first place of my own (I’ve moved out before, but I was always in some sort of dorm), and I’m super excited to buy all the furniture, decor, and everything else that goes with getting your own place. Given my very obvious travel addiction, I thought it would make sense for a lot of the home decor in my new apartment to be travel themed. I can’t make EVERYTHING travel themed (my boyfriend would kick me out before we even moved in), but let’s just say people won’t have to guess what I had in mind when decorating our new place. So, if you are moving into a new place, or just looking to do some redecorating, check out these world travel themed home decor ideas!

Travel Inspired Living Room Decorations

Travel throw pillows.

Pillows are a great way to add just a touch of travel decor to a living room. They’re not overly obnoxious, but still obvious. Plus, since they come in so many different colors, it’s not too terribly difficult to find one that would match your couch!

travel themed decor items

Stacked Travel Chests

I found out real fast when looking at furniture that end tables are surprisingly expensive. So, when I saw these on Amazon, I thought it was a really cool idea. Instead of the traditional end table (that may or may not have a small drawer to put things in), why not get suitcase styled chests? They’re stack-able and can store way more than your traditional end table.

travel themed decor items

Suitcase Shelves

I found these in one of the home decor stores I had visited and thought it was a cute idea. Instead of the traditional wooden shelves, get creative and use shelves that were decorated to look like suitcases. They’ll match your suitcase end tables!

travel themed decor items

Travel Coasters

If you don’t already have some souvenir drink coasters from your various trips around the world, you can get some world map drink coasters to make sure your new, nice tables don’t get ruined by condensation from drinking glasses.

travel themed decor items

World Map Tissue Box Cover

I don’t think too many people use tissue box covers anymore, but I thought it was one of the more unique travel decor ideas. If nothing else, it’s a conversation piece!

travel themed decor items

Traditional Globes

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of travel decor? A globe of course! You can’t decorate your new place with a travel theme and not have at least one globe around.

travel themed decor items

Travel Themed Dining Room Decor

Travel placemats.

Like I mentioned above, once you get that nice, new table, you don’t want it to be ruined from moisture from cold drinks or hot plates. Placemats are an easy and common fix to that problem. If you’re going to be buying placemats anyway, might as well make them travel themed, right?

travel themed decor items

World Map Table Runner

If dinner placemats aren’t enough, why not complete the look with a matching table runner?

travel themed decor items

World Travel Bedroom Decor

Travel lamp.

Looking for something cool and unique to show off to all of your friends? Then you have to check out this floating globe lamp! It uses magnets to make the globe levitate and it even spins around like a traditional globe! It has LEDs built into the frame to make it light up and look even cooler! Of course, you can always go with the more traditional travel home decor too…

travel themed decor items

World Map Bed Comforter

Do you dream of traveling the world? I thought so! Why not go to sleep surrounded by a map of all the places you dream of visiting?

travel themed decor items

Travel Pillow Cases

Of course, you can’t have a world map bed comforter and not have matching pillow cases. You just can’t do it.

travel themed decor items

Travel Themed Bathroom Decor

Travel inspired shower curtains.

Since most showers require some sort of shower curtain (unless you don’t mind lots of water getting all over the floor), having a travel themed shower curtain is an easy way to add a touch of travel to your home life. It’s simple, and separate from the rest of the rooms in the house (in case you don’t want your guests overwhelmed by travel decor the moment they walk into your new place).

travel themed decor items

World Map Towels

If you are looking to make the entire bathroom travel themed (instead of just having a touch of it), you can also get bath towels that are travel themed. It’s especially nice if you have a rack where you can sort of hang them on display when not in use.

travel themed decor items

Travel Inspired Kitchen Items

Travel themed alcohol items.

Even if you’re not into the “travel decor” thing, you can still add a bit of travel to your home life. You can break out these glasses when you’ve brought home some souvenir drinks from your most recent destination.

travel themed decor items

World Map Plates

If you don’t have a big dinning room table, or aren’t really the type of person to use placemats and a table runner, you can still add a bit of travel decor to meal time with these cool looking plates!

travel themed decor items

Travel Inspired Napkins

My mom always gives me a hard time because I have a bad habit of wiping my hands on my jeans instead of using a napkin (especially when eating greasy or salty foods), but if I had these napkins, I might be a little more inclined to use them (hint-hint mom: these would make a good moving gift).

travel themed decor items

World Map Cutting Board

Cutting boards are another one of those more subtle items that don’t necessarily get put on display. Since most traditional cutting boards are typically pretty bland, you can spice yours up by getting a travel decorated one.

travel themed decor items

Travel Themed Office Decor

Push pin cork globe.

My boyfriend and I are to turning our second bedroom into an office since both of us have computer desks. It’s the perfect place to put a tiny globe like this one. Plus, it’s exciting being able to put a new pin in it every time we go someplace new.

travel themed decor items

Globe Book Ends

I LOVE books. Unfortunately I don’t have as much time to read as I used to (which I think is a shame given how much I really loved it), but I’m really proud of my bookshelves and all the books that sit on them. Plus, I’ve always loved the feel of sitting in a library (especially those rustic ones you see in movies). I figured why not combine some of my biggest passions and add a little travel decor to my bookshelves?

travel themed decor items

Book Box Covers

If you’ve never heard of book boxes, don’t feel guilty. I hadn’t heard of them either until I started shopping for home decor! Book boxes are great for those book lovers (like me) that want their books to remain in mint condition. You can put your favorite books in book boxes to protect them from dust and moisture. Plus you can give your bookshelves more of a universal look (like the rustic library I mentioned above).

travel themed decor items

Pencil Holder

Because no desk would be complete without a pencil or pen holder.

travel themed decor items

Travel Wall Decor

Decorative world maps.

This is what usually comes to mind when you think of travel decor (and usually some of the first results when looking online). You can always go with the traditional, school-like world map, but there are some really cool looking world maps out there if you’re looking for something a little more unique.

travel themed decor items

Scratch Off World Maps

In more recent years, scratch off world maps have become more popular. They’re a great way to showcase all of the different places you’ve been! My mom got me one for Christmas and I absolutely love it. However, all of the places I’ve been are pretty small, so it doesn’t look like I’ve scratched anything off, but I’m working on it!

travel themed decor items

Wall Clocks

This is another one of more simple travel decor ideas. It’s a common household decoration and easy to customize to your style. Plus, there are lots of different options out there, so it isn’t too difficult to find one you like.

travel themed decor items

Word Art and Hangings

You can find all sorts of quotes that have been turned into travel decor. I feel like almost every home decor store that I’ve walked into has had some sort of wall piece with an inspiration adventure quote on it. Even if you’re not looking to go all out with the travel theme, they’re something small and nice you can hang on the wall to express your passion for travel.

travel themed decor items

Other Travel Decorating Ideas

World map welcome mat.

What better way to welcome guests than to welcome them to your adventures? No better way to set the travel theme than to have it be the first thing you see!

travel themed decor items

Light Switch Covers

I don’t know if I would replace every light switch cover in my new place with a travel inspired one, but I thought it was a unique way to incorporate travel into home decor. At this point though, the rest of the place is already travel themed, might as well make the light switches travel themed too.

travel themed decor items

Outlet Covers

If you’ve got travel themes lights switch covers, it only makes sense that you have travel inspired outlet covers too. If you have one, you just have to have the other!

travel themed decor items

And that’s it for my long list of travel themed home decor! What did you think? Will you be including any of these items the next time you decide to do some redecorating? Let me know in the comments below!

20 Travel-Inspired Decorating Ideas to Evoke Your Favorite Destination

Showcase globes, maps, suitcases, and other accessories from your travels throughout your home.

Andrea Beck served as garden editor at BHG and her work has appeared on Food & Wine, Martha Stewart, MyRecipes, and more.

travel themed decor items

Most everyone has souvenirs from their travels, whether it’s shells from the beach, novelty T-shirts, or even just plenty of photos. Luckily, there are plenty of both subtle and bold ways to incorporate your love for travel into your home.

Hanging photos is simple, but you can also turn them into a statement by creating a gallery wall or even unique wallpaper. Or use photos of places you dream of going, maps, or subway routes for more graphic, abstract art. Small touches can also add elements of travel to your home. Vintage suitcases come in many colors and can be displayed to add extra storage or serve as an end table. Use these travel decor ideas as inspiration, then adapt them to fit your favorite places and trips.

Seashell Display

Cameron Sadeghpour

Large seashells from a beach vacation double as tabletop travel decor and as a way to display Polaroids. Smaller shells can also nest inside a larger shell as a way to show them off on a shelf or table. Place them next to a blue glass lamp reminiscent of sea glass to tie the coastal theme into the rest of the room.

Abstract Travel Wall Decor

Adam Albright

City maps make stunning travel wall decor and are a great way to remember some of your favorite (or dream) destinations. These pictures lean abstract, using the city streets to create a leaf-like design. The shades of green used on each map complement dark green wall paint .

Subtle Travel Decor

Ann VanderWiel Wilde

Small accents can help show your love for a destination without dominating a room. In this alcove, a simple metal sign shaped like the state of Minnesota hangs above a rustic dresser with other memorabilia. This travel wall decor fits into almost any room and can take the shape of a favorite country or city skyline.

Map Wall Art

Using maps as wall decor is an easy way to incorporate graphic art in muted pastel colors. Despite varying color palettes, this trio of maps feels cohesive thanks to neutral frames with white mats. Bold navy walls help further showcase the travel decor.

Suitcase Bar Cart

Cocktails (or zero-proof drinks ) can definitely be part of a great vacation, so it’s only natural to incorporate travel decor into your home bar cart . A vintage suitcase is the focal point of this bar cart and acts as unique storage for a variety of bottles and bar tools. Antique drawers contain glassware and match the feel of the old-fashioned suitcase.

Seashell Storage

Brie Williams

Seashells are a popular beach souvenir, but finding a place to store them can be tricky. These embellished boxes are a beautiful way to display shells. Each box features a mosaic of shells while also providing storage on a living room mantel . Complete the look with other ocean souvenirs, like driftwood or sea glass, and vases and artwork with blue accents.

Entryway Travel Decor

David A Land

Display travel decor in your home’s entryway for a reminder of your favorite destinations every time you walk in the door. This console table includes a travel bag that's ready to be grabbed for any adventure. Houseplants also help give the space a tropical feel, and the tabletop provides a surface to display travel photos.

Travel Wallpaper

In addition to small accents, you can also add travel decor to your home on a larger scale. World maps paper the walls of this bedroom . The muted colors complement natural wood furniture and blue accents on the bed. The wallpaper contributes eye-catching texture without overwhelming the space.

Showcase Souvenirs

KIM CORNELISON

This living room features several souvenirs that work together in a subtle way. A gallery wall incorporates map artwork; its bright colors and abstract shapes coordinate with a globe perched on top of a bookcase. A bright blue vintage suitcase on one shelf nods to vacationing and pairs well with the navy velvet sofa .

Historical Wall Decor

Alisal Ranch

These large-scale framed maps act almost as an accent wall in this dining space. It includes historical boundaries and territory lines from the early days of the U.S., and its rustic appearance matches the wood-plank wall and vintage chairs. A large map can also serve as a way of tracking your travels across the country.

Bookshelf Display

If you enjoy collecting art on your travels, display them together on a shelf to blend souvenirs with your personal style. This bookcase includes a variety of vases, figurines, and sculptures from a variety of destinations. Natural materials like wood and earthy colors tie everything together.

Mural Accent Wall

John Bessler

Large-scale wallpaper prints can be overwhelming, but using them on an accent wall is a stylish way to add a bold pattern to a room. This living room has a tropical feel thanks to the blue and green mural of palm trees. The colors tie in with the area rug, and the graphic print contrasts the black-and-white striped seating.

Vibrant Color Palette

Dustin Halleck

The rich jewel tones of this library create a luxurious feeling. Stacked vintage suitcases serve as an end table while matching a floral rug and dark cobalt walls. Shelves near the seating area provide an opportunity to display travel souvenirs like prints, decorative boxes, and figurines.

Surfing Inspiration

Chad R. Mellon

Add a nod to the beach without displaying shells or pictures of the coast. Instead, hang a surfboard patterned with typography for a sunny, ocean vibe that upgrades a blank wall. Pair with a wood vanity and blue bathroom floor tiles for a casual coastal aesthetic.

Photo Wall Treatment

A repeating pattern of coastal photos creates a bold but still neutral wallpaper in this bedroom. Customize walls with your own photos, or find a print that features professional photos from a dream destination. Pair with a blue painted ceiling and geometric light fixture to turn the room into a beachy paradise.

Coastal Travel Decor

Bring the beach to a small area of your home. In this room, seashells and starfish are displayed alongside ceramics featuring shades of blue. The seaside collection and cool colors help bring a coastal feel to a section of the room where dishes and serving platters are stored.

DIY Nightstand

CARSON DOWNING

Vintage suitcases take on a new function with this DIY bedroom decor. Stack three on top of each other to create just the right height for a nightstand next to the bed . Pair with a lampshade patterned with a map of the country to really highlight a travel theme.

Tropical Decor

Carson Downing

Large-scale botanical wallpaper creates a tropical aesthetic in this bedroom. The print complements green painted flooring and a leafy bedspread. Natural accents, including a woven leather headboard and rattan side table, make this room feel like a tropical destination.

Decorate with Globes

Kritsada Panichgul.

Go all-out with travel decor with a shelf full of globes. Here, the globes feature similar colors and are grouped by size for a cohesive look. Instead of buying new globes, shop secondhand or thrift stores for vintage varieties.

Dining Room Souvenir Display

Several decor items work together to create travel-inspired style in this dining room . A large print of a beach scene provides seaside inspiration, while a large shell and a piece of driftwood act as centerpieces for the table and credenza. A pendant light with natural fibers completes the look.

Travel-Themed Decorating Ideas

framed map and potted plants

Traveling has a host of physical, spiritual, and emotional benefits. Learning how to decorate your home with a travel theme means you can display all your souvenirs in a way that keeps those special moments and memories close. However, you don't just have to decorate with mementos from your trips. There are many ways to incorporate a love of travel into your living space. Doing so might give you some travel benefits without ever having to leave your house.

Travelex explains that traveling relieves stress and helps to boost our mental health. However, it's not just the traveling that's good for you. Even planning for a trip and looking at dreamy places on Airbnb has a positive impact on your health. Having something to look forward to can help you through the worst days. Depending on how and where you travel, you can learn more about different cultures and open your mind to new experiences and ways of life.

It may also improve your fitness, depending on your travel style. If you visit Europe or even Disney World, you can expect to log thousands of steps on your fitness tracker. You can reap even more benefits if you're an active traveler who likes hiking, paddleboarding, or swimming. Travel can also improve your sleep because of extra activity and reduced stress. You can reap all these benefits at home if you decorate with a travel theme.

Turn travel photos into coasters

This clever idea allows you to revisit your favorite travel memories whenever you sit down with a drink. They can evoke memories of the people who traveled with you and inspire you to share stories with visitors who notice and appreciate the snapshots. According to  Travel Inspired Living , these are easy to create with basic supplies you can get almost anywhere.

You'll need four to six plain colored ceramic coasters, depending on how many photos — and drinkers — you have. These can be any color you desire, but neutral shades like white, black, cream, or beige are the easiest to find. You'll also need Mod Podge, a foam brush, spray adhesive, travel photos, and felt cushions. New-age polaroids work great for this project because they are square.

First, cut your photos to fit the coaster. You can attach them with either spray adhesive or Mod Podge. Choose a matte or glossy finish, whichever best suits your preferences. Position your photo, and coat it with a thin layer of Mod Podge. You can do this with a foam brush or a foam roller. This step will initially obscure the photo, but it will dry clear. Allow the Mod Podge to dry completely before applying two more coats, leaving them for several hours in between. Once your final layer is dry, turn the coasters over and apply felt pads to the corners to prevent them from scratching your tables and other surfaces.

Construct a vacation memory photo map

Get travel pictures off your phone and onto your wall with this fun travel-inspired DIY project. Per DIY Fun Ideas , you can link your photographs to the places you took them using a world map decal. Frame your photos any way you choose and use yarn to connect the frame to the correct location on your map.

There are lots of ways you can customize this project to suit your preferences. Instead of yarn, you can use tape or ribbon. Ribbon comes in various colors and styles to go with any decor. Different colors, sizes, and types of frames can also make this travel-themed decor pop. Consider choosing a few larger frames to fit three or four pictures together. Pair these with your smaller and medium frames to offset one another. The wall decal is black and pairs nicely with black frames, but if you're looking for more variety, you can also use gray. For eclectic wall art , select various colors to distribute around your map.

Build a dresser with global appeal

While this DIY project is time-consuming, the results are worth it. One of the best things about this project is that the piece of furniture you are decorating doesn't need to be expensive. You can choose the size, shape, and price you desire by visiting thrift shops, antique stores, or flea markets. Alternatively, you can repurpose a bureau or cabinet you already have.

Re-invent your cabinet or dresser and give it a fresh face by attaching maps with Mod Podge or similar decoupage paste.  Between the Rafters  recommends practicing with a smaller project if you've never worked with Mod Podge before and staying patient. The decoupage process and cutting your maps to fit the size of your drawers will take time and effort. The finished result, however, will be stunning.

Like so many travel-themed decor projects, this one is totally customizable. An old-school map in yellows, creams, and whites will work best if you use a black or dark brown bureau. If you start with a white or cream piece, maps with large amounts of water create a perfect complement. If you don't have a bureau or cabinet in colors that go with your existing maps or vice-versa, you can fix this by starting your project with a can of paint.

Frame your foreign currencies

If you're a world traveler, you probably have a collection of coins and foreign currency around the house. While you could save them up for your next trip — maybe you're already planning one — you can also use them as decoration in your home. According to the School of Decorating , floating frames are ideal for displaying your paper currency from international destinations. You can use store-bought frames as-is or adjust them to best complement the currency.

Many countries use coins for smaller denominations of currency, making them more challenging to display. Most travelers store and display their coins in jars or small boxes. However, you can also use frames to display coins from faraway places (via Indigo Amethyst ). You can glue the money to the back, or if you want the possibility of using it in the future, use a soft mounting foam instead. It comes in various colors, or you can cover it in fabric to create the look you want. Black or blue velvet will nicely offset your coins, no matter the material.

Build an international gallery wall

A gallery wall is a beautiful way to display your photos and other collected souvenirs from your travels. You can even create a clipboard with hinge clips to hang your smaller pictures or prints. This idea is a unique way to display odd-sized items from your travels. Hang ticket stubs, painted images, or photos from your Instagram account. According to Live Laugh Rowe , you will need plywood, polyurethane, brushes or rags to apply the polyurethane, metal hinge clips, screws, a screwdriver, 4 x 4 prints, and a sawtooth hanger to create your clipboard. Cut the board to fit the number of pictures — or other items — you will be mounting.

Start by applying polyurethane to the wood, then decide which direction to hang your clipboard and where to mount your clips. Drill holes and mount the clips with flathead screws. Attach the sawtooth hanger to the back, clip your photos or mementos to the clipboard, and hang it on the wall. When deciding on other items for your gallery wall, aim for frames of the same or similar colors, but choose items of different shapes and sizes for eye-catching visual appeal. Consider using mixed mediums as well — watercolor paintings, canvases, and photographs.

Create a travel-themed shadowbox

If you've collected a bunch of small tokens from your trips but haven't managed to do much with them, this may be the project for you. It allows you to assemble a small collection of photos and mementos from a trip and put them on display. It's a wonderful option if you're the kind of person who brings more than just photographs home from your travels. Shadow boxes allow you to display multiple items from a location in one place, which means you're not limited to two-dimensional displays.

Per  A Sacred Journey , you can use a photo, print, or postcard as your background. Or use more than one, layered on top of each other. Build your shadowbox around the background display, or pick up a pre-made one from stores like IKEA or craft shops like Michael's, Jo-Ann's, or Hobby Lobby. Start by using an adhesive to attach your mementos to your background, including shells, tickets, pins, bills, and other small tokens. Add any accents you choose, like paints, pens, markers, glitter, embroidery floss, or whatever else you can imagine. Layering gives your display depth and lets you show off everything you collected from your favorite destinations in one place.

Turn your suitcases into shelves

Don't start disassembling the suitcases you use for your travels; this design hack from Ki Nassauer Style  works best with vintage luggage and trunks . Search thrift shops or online stores for well-crafted, unique pieces that speak to your personal style. Flea markets and antique shops are also good places to source your suitcases for this DIY project.

Once you've found your luggage, the first thing you'll need to do is remove the lining (via Instructables ). Then, trim it to the appropriate size. This job is not for novices, so find someone with experience using a scroll or circular saw and a jigsaw. These are necessary for cutting through the metal band in most vintage suitcases.

Decide what depth you want your shelves to be, then apply a layer of painter's tape to mark where you will cut the suitcases. You will also need to cut pieces of wood to the same size and shape as your suitcase. You use these for mounting. Plan out where you want each shelf to go. Once you've picked your locations, attach the wood pieces to the wall using 2 ½-inch screws. Then fit the luggage over the wood, and decide what to display on your new shelves.

Light up the night with LED map candles

This idea from The Navage Patch is a genius way to give your standard LED candles a fun travel theme. All you need are some maps, Mod Podge, and LED candles. You have two options for applying the decoupage glue. You can attach it directly to the candle or put it on the back side of the map. The map is a slightly easier option in this case because it is a flat surface, and the candle is round.

Try your best to cut the map to the same size as the candle before starting, but it doesn't have to be perfect. It should be slightly larger than the LED candle's surface. A paper cutter will make this task easier, but it's necessary. Glue the map onto your LED candle and smooth the surface, removing air bubbles. Fold the edges over the bottom of the candle, gluing it to the bottom. When using the decoupage paste, keeping your fingers clean is essential. If you get glue on them, wipe it off quickly on a clean cloth. Otherwise, your fingers can stick to the paper, making this project more challenging to complete. Using scissors, trim the map as close to the top of the LED candle as possible. Let the glue dry completely before switching on your candles and lighting up your new display.

Turn a globe into a lamp or shade

There are several ways to create these lovely travel-themed lamps, depending on what kind of globe you choose to use.  Upcycled Wonders  recommends cutting a traditional globe in half if you want to decorate a child's room, using the Northern hemisphere for one lampshade and the Southern hemisphere for the other. Since globes come in many colors, you can choose one that complements your existing decor. You can even add decorative accents to the bottom if you prefer.

If you're looking for something more subtle, you can turn a whole globe into a nightlight or chandelier. Drill a hole into the globe's top and place a bulb inside, or cut it in half and reassemble it around the bulb. Either is an excellent option for a child's room, where it can serve as a nightlight and an educational tool all in one. You can also use non-transparent globes as lights, but it will take a bit more work. You will need to drill holes to let the light escape from inside, but this provides tremendous opportunities for your travel-themed decor. You can drill holes along the borders of the countries. If you're a world traveler, you can drill holes in each location you've visited, so your lamp doubles as a reminder of all your favorite trips.

Decoupage garden decorations with maps

You don't have to limit travel decor to the inside of your house. You can also decorate your garden, porch, or patio with travel-themed objects and designs. One of the best ways to do this is by adding maps to planters or a charming birdhouse . You can use roadmaps or world maps depending on the size and design of the objects.

According to Midwest Living , matching the colors on your maps to your birdhouse is critical for this project. You can buy unfinished birdhouses from craft stores and paint them in the colors that correspond to your maps. If birdhouses aren't your thing, you can decoupage maps on planter cans or even the rims of terracotta planters (via 365 Designs ). To plant in them, you must use a water-resistant decoupage medium. However, this isn't necessary if you use them for storage or decoration.

Start by applying a water-based stain to your pots. Measure the rim and cut your maps to a slightly larger size. Look for maps made from decoupage paper, which is thicker and more resistant to bleeding than traditional paper. Put painter's tape under the rim to prevent decoupage paste from getting on the pot's surface. Apply a base layer of decoupage on the rim to help seal the clay. Attach your map to the edge using the same decoupage medium. Smooth out the air bubbles and coat the map with another layer of decoupage. Three coats should be sufficient to seal the decorative rim on your pot.

Make a memory jar

If you collect things like theater ticket stubs and train tickets from your travels, creatively store and display them with mason jars. Mason jars come in various colors, styles, and sizes, with a variety of lids. A rusty-hued jar is an excellent choice for rustic or vintage decor , according to  She's Crafty . If you favor modern or minimalist styles, nickel or black are ideal choices.

Memory jars are an excellent way to display your collection of tickets and travel stubs in a visually pleasing manner while also reminding you of the memories associated with those experiences. There are so many things you can include. Consider cards from your hotel room (if they aren't the kind that needs to be turned back in), Disney passes, ticket stubs from a ferry ride, or the funicular you rode in Capri on your last trip to Italy. If you find yourself traveling extensively in Europe and using public transit, you may have a whole collection of ticket stubs for your jar. You can keep all of them in one place alongside your other travel memories or collect location-specific memories in a jar with pictures from the corresponding vacation.

11 Minimalist Travel-Themed Home Decor Ideas You’ll Love

Site under maintenance, please excuse our appearance.

This article’s recommendations may include affiliate links.

Everything about my life and decor preference leans toward minimalism. It’s why I can travel light, move from place to place, and live a clutter-free lifestyle. And despite hardly buying souvenirs when abroad, I’ve been able to partially hang up my digital nomad life and create a warm, stylish abode with mindfully curated travel-themed home decor.

map pillow decor with continents

Here are 11 minimalist travel decor approaches I take in our own home. All of these items have been collected over the years (both stateside and overseas) and fit seamlessly into a modern boho aesthetic without overwhelming the rooms with trinkets and clutter. I hope it inspires travel-themed home decor projects of your own!

Add a Moroccan Leather Pouf

I love this leather Moroccan seating cushion for three reasons: (1) the pouf was purchased in Fes, Morocco after enthusiastic negotiations, (2) it came without the filling so we were able to fold it tightly into our baggage and continue traveling to three more destinations, and (3) it is beautiful!

I filled the pouf with old clothing that wasn’t good enough to donate. This helped save money and reduce waste (though as you see from the photo I need more to really fill out the pillow)!

You can buy a Moroccan-style pouf in the States but you’re likely to pay $75-300 depending on the size and material. I believe we paid about $16 USD in Fes medina , where it is manufactured.

Use a stylish globe for travel decor.

Decorating the home with a globe is a classic way to incorporate travel-inspired decor. You can go the classic academic route with a large blue globe, opt for a world map wall, or choose different globe sizes or colors.

Since I love white for minimalist home decor, this gorgeous white globe caught my eye! I purchased it along a US road trip in a home goods store, but you can surely find similar ones online. I’ll suggest a few below.

Celebrate your favorite international wines with a bar cart or wine rack.

Whenever Alex and I travel together, we make sure to visit a local brewery and/or winery. I absolutely love vineyards (even beyond the wine) and feel connected to a destination and its community and history when I visit them.

Because of our minimalist lifestyle and mindful budget travel, we’ve only ever purchased a few bottles of wine abroad (and subsequently drank them) but we have learned so much about wine regions, and their best wines respectfully. So much so, that we knew we wanted some form of bar cart or wine rack to showcase international wines we love.

wine collection bottles and glasses at home bar

We bought our wine cart for well under $100 through an amazing Facebook marketplace bargain (don’t sleep on Craigslist, tag sales, and Facebook marketplace for sweet deals — just know you’ll have to pick it up), but here are some options from Amazon if you just want to have it delivered to your door.

Bar carts to show off your favorite wines or barware:

Hang an acoustic guitar.

A hanging guitar may not immediately scream wanderlust to everyone, but it does to some… and here’s why. Many road tripping adventurers bring along a guitar for entertainment. Some of their best memories may be camp-side practicing a new song, or traveling hundreds of miles to perform or follow a tour.

Backpackers also find travel nostalgia in guitars; anyone who’s ever stayed at a hostel knows the importance of a communal guitar/singing session with newly found friends.

If you’re a musician or concert enthusiast, you might even have some cherished signatures on that guitar, commemorating some of the best adventures of your life.

Create a Photo Series of Your Favorite Postcards, Artwork, Travel Photos

Photography is one of my favorite things to do. I started shooting black and white film at 16 years old and enjoy documenting my adventures around the globe. I have a few photo collections in my home of my favorite travel adventures and they inspire wanderlust whenever someone walks past them.

Photo collections are a way to not only showcase your work, but also celebrate the beauty of the world. If you choose carefully, they’ll even elevate the room decor.

Can you believe the above photo of Machu Picchu was shot on an iPhone 5!? It took a bit of editing in Lightroom and Photoshop to get the quality to a point where I could enlarge the image, but I am so proud of it.

dual wall photo of machu picchu

Note : I use York Photo to print all my images; even my mom has used them since the 90’s for their great prices. They were just acquired by Snapfish (or merged, whatever) so I have to try them to see if the quality is the same.

If you don’t have photos you’d want to showcase, there are still other easy ways to display your amazing adventures. Consider framing postcards or artwork, for instance. I love this printed sketch of La Tour Eiffel from across la Seine , one of France’s most famous rivers. I bought this sketch while visiting Paris in 2010 and it sat in a box for years until I found the perfect place to hang it.

Showcase Artisanal Embroidery, Blankets, or Textiles

One of my favorite purchases is an alpaca blanket we bought in Peru. We had to trek off the beaten path to a factory in Peru in order to find true alpaca and vicuña products that weren’t a polyblend.

When we finally got there, we spent $100-200 USD (totally breaking our unemployed backpacker budgets) for a beautiful blanket, and then gifted it to a well-deserving couple.

Yes. We gifted it and never bought one for ourselves. These days we often kick ourselves for not finding a way to purchase a second one because it was so comfy and beautiful… but que sera, sera .

Anyway, since we gifted it I don’t have a photo of it, BUT here’s one of the other embroidery and textiles we love in our home: a pillow gifted to us from Ecuador ! I also have a well-worn purse from Nicaragua and a wool blanket from Scotland.

indigenous women pillow embroidered

If you don’t have the opportunity or capacity to source handmade textiles overseas, you could head to Amazon’s “Handmade” section and search there, or support small businesses through Etsy.

You can also shop at your local home goods or department store and search for travel-themed throw pillows; the header image of this article highlights a gorgeous atlas pillow. The tag shows it was from Nordstrom Rack (it was a gift).

Throw pillows that celebrate travel and culture:

Celebrate south american mate or moroccan tea.

Yerba Mate is like tea with the punch of coffee. Mate is the term for the vessel from which you drink the beverage: a wooden gourd. Yerba mate are the indigenous dried leaves you crush within the gourd, followed by pouring hot water and drinking with a special filtered straw, called a bombilla.

Some of my best travel memories are of my three-month South America backpacking trip starting at the Atacama Desert in Chile, through Patagonia, Argentina, and Uruguay. During the latter, Alex and our friend Jon were inspired by the locals drinking mate.

Yerba mate was everywhere; most often seen hanging from a thermos crossbody worn by local men. Naturally, Alex and Jon bought their own gourds and lived their best mate lives.

Mate Gourds You Can Buy Online:

Another drinking tradition Alex and I really got into is Moroccan tea. While visiting this beautiful northern African country, we were enamored by the mint tea tradition (with tons of sugar!) and couldn’t imagine our days without it.

The entire presentation is always done so beautifully, and the Moroccan mint tea was one of our favorite memories, so we bought a Moroccan teapot of our own for the home! Note, we got one for quite cheap (under $15 USD) knowing that it is not real silver. If you want a real silver one, it will be heavy and much more expensive.

Hang Wanderlust Wall Decor

There are two types of people in the decor world: ones who have “Live, Laugh, Love” wall art and ones who don’t. I have always thought of myself (post-college) as the latter but, alas…here we are: I have word art signage now hanging on my wall.

If it is any consolation, this signage was perfect for the short hallway entrance to my home office — completely relevant since my work is literally built on wandering. If you love it, I got it from Home Goods and will suggest a few similar wall art options below.

Wall Decor with Words (Travel theme):

Spice up your kitchen with international swag.

One of the easiest ways to inspire wanderlust without taking up space is through flavor! There are so many dishes and sauces you can bring to your home and daily routine that will totally remind you of travel — and get you excited to hit the road again.

From my transition to eating certain pasta with olive oil instead of tomato sauce after a trip to Italy, to my constant yearning for the desayuno tipico de Costa Rica (specifically black bean and egg breakfast), the kitchen is a comforting place to celebrate travel.

Coasters from Another Country

Coasters are a common (and inexpensive) way to decorate with travel in mind. You can place them in your living room, on the dining table, or even your bedroom bedside table.

Careful though, this type of travel home decor can get cheesy quickly. If you want to showcase coasters that won’t clash with the style of your home aesthetic, avoid overly touristy coaster souvenirs by keeping an eye out for the three C’s: clean, calm, and chic.

I love this coaster set from my bachelorette party to Tulum because it mimics the wood accents of my home while depicting one of Tulum, Mexico’s most popular attractions. Can you recognize the ruins?

Travel Theme Coasters:

Decorate with travel-inspired rugs.

I have a love-hate relationship with rugs because my mother didn’t really allow them growing up. They collect dust and we were an anti-dust house! Plus if you have children or pets, they are prone to staining quicker.

That said, area rugs have grown on me over the years, within reason, and I particularly love rugs that are inspired by beautiful destinations.

Here are some of the rugs in my house. If I had the capacity, I would’ve purchased rugs abroad but they are quite expensive and heavy! For now my rugs from Rugs USA work just fine for me, and their geometric shapes remind me of some of my travels.

What type of travel-themed Home decor do you have in your own home?

I hope these ideas inspired wanderlust! They sure do so for me. This list just scratches the surface of travel decor you can add to your home. Again, since I try my best to be minimalist, this is just enough for me. If you want other home decor ideas, I’d definitely recommend considering:

  • Travel inspired curtains
  • Travel inspired bedding
  • Woven wall decor (like baskets)

Enjoy your upgraded, travel-themed home! If you loved these suggestions, be sure to save them on Pinterest and share with your community.

Love this article. I can totally see how I can quickly pick up a clash of things from my travels that can overwhelm my home, definitely got to be more thoughtful. I’ve bought quite a few fabrics from South America that I want to use to upholster old charges or have as a wall hanging. Stuffing the Moroccan pouf with old clothes is a great idea.

there’s so much that can be done with fabrics! a wall hanging sounds amazing!

Simple home decor tips to add love for travel into your home

This month, as we celebrate World Tourism Day. It’s the perfect moment to delve into the world of travel inspirations and offer globe-trotters some delightful travel-themed home decor ideas. After all, who doesn’t want their living space to inspire their wanderlust?

Whether it’s a wall adorned with a tempting image of Spain’s mouth-watering paella, a cherished snapshot from a family vacation six years ago, or a world map design that allows us to mark off each new destination, we adore these personal travel mementos.

Let’s dive deep into this blog and explore ideas that will inspire you to book those long-planned vacations.

Travel Wall Decor: The World Map

Incorporating a world map into your home decor is a beautiful way to showcase your love for travel. Look at this elegant living room with white walls and a striking black textured world map design on one accent wall . Complete the look with a sectional sofa and a hexagonal coffee table in wooden laminate to create a comforting aura in your living room. Now, here’s the fun part. Get some sleek wooden floating shelves next to the TV unit. That’s where you can showcase all your travel souvenirs and quirky knick-knacks from your global adventures.

PS: You can have a personalised world map accent wall according to your preference.

Travel-Inspired Room Decor: Keeping It Authentic

Take a look at this vibrant bedroom design. Its travel-themed decor is adventurous and incredibly chic. You can choose travel quotes, a city skyline, your favourite destination, or a world map to accessorise with photos and to-do lists. The wooden platform bed and matching side table add an earthy touch to the room. And don’t forget to hang some travel-themed home decor accessories on the wall, such as a travel bag, to create a space that inspires you to wake up with a new goal each day.

Travel Wall Decor Favourite: A Photo Gallery

We love this one! One of the most stylish and thoughtful elements in interior design is the incorporation of photographs. Why not create a collage of these cherished memories on one of the walls in your space? Our favourite is the living room, which serves as a delightful icebreaker for guests, enabling them to get to know you better. Consider using trail lights and spotlights on the false ceiling to draw attention. Don’t forget to add a stylish touch to the space with a vibrant camelback sofa, an accent chair, and a stunning rug. We also recommend choosing lighter colours for the room so that the limelight remains on your memory wall.

Travel-Themed Decor Ideas for the Bathroom

One of the most enjoyable aspects of a vacation is the ambience, especially those impeccably designed bathrooms with candles, wooden accents, well-organised vanities, and a spa-like serenity. Ah, we all deserve a break! If this applies to you, consider a bathroom makeover. Notice this simple and inviting bathroom design , featuring warm earthy tones and a white cabinet to maintain a clutter-free space. The shower cubicle features wooden flooring to create a rustic charm, while a sleek glass partition adds a modern touch. With a few strategically placed plants and the sweet scent of a cedarwood candle, you’ll feel rejuvenated, as if you’ve escaped to a distant island, far from the daily hustle.

Travel Decor Ideas for the Patio

This one is for homes with outdoor spaces. To your advantage, why go so far when you can simply step outside the door and experience the vibe? If you enjoy picnics with your family, barbeque nights with friends, and throwing house parties, you need to transform that unused patio space. This covered patio, with a wooden ceiling , features a bar where you can enjoy chilled drinks. The rattan furniture and two tall chairs beside the bar counter provide additional seating options for your guests. Add tall plants and night lights to experience those tropical beach-side night vibes!

Travel Wall Decor to Embrace Your Love for Wildlife

Express your love for wildlife in a remarkable way! While souvenirs and pictures are great, there’s a more dramatic option: wildlife murals. These striking murals infuse your living space with adventure and instantly become the centrepiece of your travel-inspired decor. Complement this theme with a sturdy, coffee table using a wood slice, bringing a taste of the outdoors indoors. Incorporating more natural materials such as stone, wood, and earthy colours will add depth and character to your space. Remember, the most exceptional homes embrace their true selves and passions, even if it means taking an unconventional path.

Wildlife-themed travel wall decor ideas for the living room to bring nature vibe

As you draw inspiration from your travels and experiences, remember that travel-inspired home decor extends far beyond wall decor. Your canvas for creativity includes patterned tiles, floral prints, teak wood furniture, and contemporary designs that can subtly or dramatically transform your living space. You can explore biophilic and bohemian designs for a peppy character. travel themed decor items

Now, you just need a college dorm room theme or color palette. A travel themed dorm is not only inspirational, but it’s classic! A travel themed dorm is not likely to be a common dorm room theme, making your room super cool and unique.

The key to a classic, travel-themed dorm room is incorporating travel decor into every space in your room, without overdoing it. In this post, I’ll show you how to add elegant decor all over your room for a put-together, classic travel themed college dorm room.

Here are 9 showstopping decor ideas for a travel-themed college dorm room.

TRAVEL-THEMED DORM ROOM DECOR

Wall canvases.

travel themed decor items

These wall canvases are perfect for the base of a gallery wall above your desk, or using as decor throughout the whole room. I love that they’re black and white, so they fit with any color palette.

VINTAGE POSTCARDS

travel themed decor items

These vintage postcards compliment the above wall canvases extremely well, and would be perfect for making in to a gallery wall. Plus – only $8 for 32 postcards? What a steal!

travel themed decor items

GLOBE PEN HOLDER

travel themed decor items

A large globe I can confidently say will take up much more room than it is worth in your dorm room. Keep the same aesthetic and use this pencil and pen holder in place of it – decor with a function!

SCRATCH OFF MAP

travel themed decor items

I bought one of these for my partner, since we travel frequently together. This is a super cool piece of decor if you’ve been quite a few places or plan to be in the near future. This gold one is especially elegant and would complement many dorm room themes nicely.

travel themed decor items

TRAVEL PILLOW

travel themed decor items

This is quite the literal travel pillow! The elegant writing doesn’t draw too much attention to the pillow, allowing it to blend in with your theme.

travel themed decor items

I know, I know. More wall decor! Depending on how much wall space you have to decorate, you’ll want to make sure that you decorate it as much as possible without cluttering it. These road signs are perfect for being one of your statement pieces.

In your dorm room, you’ll want to keep 2-3 statement pieces, and the rest just accent pieces. I had my statement pieces above my desk, next to the wall on my bed, and my 3rd and final statement piece behind the head of my bed.

VINTAGE STAMP BEDDING

travel themed decor items

This vintage stamp bedding will definitely set the tone for your entire room. While this bedding is super flattering and will bring a ton of character to your room, make sure that you use other travel themed decor sparingly – you don’t want to overdue it!

DISPLAY YOUR TRAVELS!

travel themed decor items

This gold wire grid is absolutely amazing for displaying the places you have traveled to. I love these wire grids since they allow you to create such a wonderful display – you can add shelves, other wire grids, and it’s easy to pin items other than pictures to it. This is perfect for displaying your travel adventures!

WORLD MAP WATERCOLOR TAPESTRY

Just like the bedding, this is another statement piece. However, it’s gorgeous! Adding a tapestry to a dorm room is a great way to cover a ton of wall space with decor for a super affordable price.

Gallery Wall Themes: Ideas For Every Room In Your Home

Are you looking to spruce up your living spaces and add a personal touch to your home decor?

One of the best ways to achieve this is by creating a stunning gallery wall. This is like a curated collection of art pieces, photographs, and other sentimental items arranged on a wall. It's a fantastic way to showcase your style and construct a focal point in rooms!

*This post may contain affiliate links and I’ll earn a commission if you shop through them. You can read my full disclosure here .

So, if you’re ready to explore a range of gallery wall themes that complement any room in your house, continue reading:

1. Nature ’ s Beauty

Start by bringing the serene beauty of the natural world into your home with a gallery wall featuring images or paintings of the following:

  • Flowers

Imagine entering your living room and seeing a framed picture that features close-ups of various flora. Tulips, daisies, lilies, and roses can create a vibrant, colorful nature-inspired gallery wall.

  • Landscapes

Visualize standing in your bedroom and gazing at a collection of breathtaking landscapes. Think about hanging paintings of Lake Tahoe and the Amazon Rainforest for a peaceful atmosphere.

  • Wildlife

If you’re an animal lover, why not make a gallery wall filled with captivating wildlife images? From majestic elephants to cute squirrels, the possibilities are endless!

Nature-themed gallery walls create a sense of harmony, perfect for relaxation after a long day.

2. Travel Memories

Take a trip down memory lane each time you enter your home by building a travel-inspired gallery wall. This theme lets you showcase your favorite travel destinations and capture the essence of your adventures.

Consider displaying framed photographs of the following:

  • Iconic Landmarks

Envision a wall adorned with captivating photographs of your experiences at the Eiffel Tower and the Great Wall of China. This gallery wall theme will not only bring wanderlust to your home but also serve as a reminder of the fantastic places you've been.

  • Colorful City Streets

Visualize walking up to a gallery wall that transports you to Paris, New York, or Tokyo’s lively streets. Display colorful photos of bustling cityscapes, street art, or iconic buildings like the Arc de Triomphe or Times Square.

Travel-themed gallery walls will take you around the world without leaving the comfort of your own home.

3. Black and White Elegance

For a sophisticated look, consider a black-and-white gallery wall. This theme creates a striking visual impact while maintaining an air of elegance. Here are your options:

  • Abstract Art

Visualize a modern black-and-white gallery wall featuring abstract paintings or sketches. Geometric shapes and bold lines add a contemporary flair to your room .

  • Typography

Think about adding black-and-white typography to your gallery wall. Inspiring quotes, meaningful words, or playful typography can make a bold statement in your home. Mix different fonts and styles to personalize your gallery wall and express yourself.

The monochrome palette allows the beauty of the photographs to take center stage, enhancing the aesthetic of your space.

4. Minimalism

If you appreciate simplicity, a minimalist gallery wall is the ideal choice. Consider these:

  • Muted Tones

Envision a gallery wall with muted tones of gray, beige, and soft pastels. Display abstract art pieces with simple shapes and clean lines, creating a soothing ambiance in your home.

  • Grid Layout

Imagine a grid-based gallery wall with identical-sized frames displaying minimalist abstract art. This symmetrical arrangement creates a clean look, perfect for those who appreciate order and balance in their home décor.

  • Mixed Media

Consider mixed media art for your minimalist abstract gallery wall. Create texture and depth with materials like paper, fabric, or metal. Whether it's a collage of torn paper or a piece with layered textures, mixed media art adds an artistic touch to your gallery wall.

This theme adds a touch of modernity to any space, making it the ideal option for those who crave a sleek atmosphere.

5. Vintage Charm

Transport your home back in time with a gallery wall with vintage charm. Here are two choices:

  • Victorian Era

Picture a gallery wall with vintage photographs, illustrations, or Victorian-era replicas.

  • Retro Pop Culture

If you’re a fan of the vibrant retro era, consider creating a gallery wall filled with posters, album covers, or vintage ads from that time. Showcase your love for pop culture icons like Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, or The Beatles.

A vintage-themed gallery wall will add character and a sense of history to your space, making it one-of-a-kind.

6. Family Collage

Celebrate your loved ones and create a gallery wall that tells your family’s story. Consider these:

  • Wedding Day

Visualize a gallery wall dedicated to showcasing you or your parents' wedding day. Display shots of the ceremony, the reception, and candid moments with loved ones.

  • Generations

Imagine a gallery wall that celebrates the generations of your family. Showcase photographs of your parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents.

  • Childhood Memories

Capture the essence of your childhood by constructing a gallery wall filled with photographs of your younger self. Include candid moments, nostalgic snapshots, and even old family portraits.

A family-themed gallery wall adds warmth and a personal touch to any room, making it feel like home.

7. Cultural Textures

Infuse your living space with vibrant cultural diversity by adorning your walls with a gallery that highlights global textures and patterns, including:

  • Intricate Macramé Designs

Picture a gallery wall featuring stunning macramé pieces in various sizes and patterns. Macramé is a textile art that involves knotting cords or ropes to create gorgeous designs.

  • Embroidery Art

Showcase culturally specific patterns like Mexican Otomi embroidery or Indian Kantha stitching. This will beautify your gallery wall and highlight cultural diversity.

  • Woven Tapestries

For an added touch of texture and depth, include woven tapestries on your gallery wall. These pieces can be sourced from regions like vibrant Turkish kilims and intricate Moroccan tapestries.

Cultural gallery walls create a captivating, globally-inspired space where each piece tells a story.

8. Color Explosion

If you’re a lover of bright hues and bold statements, a color explosion gallery wall is the ideal choice for you. Imagine a playful, eclectic collection of rainbow-colored paintings, prints, and photos.

Embrace the power of color and let your gallery wall become a focal point that energizes your space. You can choose a mix of abstract pieces or even pop art prints. This color explosion gallery wall will make your home come alive with joy and creativity.

9. Music Lovers

If music holds a special place in your heart, consider building a gallery wall that pays homage to your favorite artists, albums, or instruments. Visualize framed concert posters, vinyl album covers, or musical notes displayed in sleek frames.

You can also include musical instruments or famous musician-inspired art. Envision a photo featuring Beethoven on the piano and Taylor Swift strumming her guitar. This music-themed gallery wall will introduce rhythm and melody to your home and show your passion for music.

10. Coastal Retreat

Lastly, infuse your home with the soothing vibes of the coast with a gallery wall inspired by all things nautical and sun-kissed. Imagine a collection of seashells, driftwood, framed ocean waves, and sandy shore photos.

You can choose between a neutral color palette or embrace vibrant hues reminiscent of a tropical paradise. A coastal-themed gallery wall will transport you to the beach and create a sanctuary of relaxation .

From Bland to Beautiful

Ultimately, gallery walls are a great way to express creativity, show off your style, and personalize your home decor. From nature to shoreline, every room in your home can have a gallery wall theme.

So, let your walls become canvases, and let your imagination guide you as you curate your perfect gallery wall. Good luck with creating a visual story with your chosen pieces!

The Most Beautiful Stations on the Moscow Metro

travel themed decor items

You might have heard that there are some beautiful metro stations in Moscow. Soviet decorations, chandeliers, mosaic painting and statues are common in many of the stations. The good news is that the Moscow Metro does not cost a lot of money and many of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro are on the same line, so you can almost get on and off at each station to visit these. Over the New Year holidays, I had a free afternoon and decided to visit some of these stations. Check out what I found below…..

The main stations that you will want to visit are on the Number 5 line, also known as the Circle Line. An advantage of this line is that you can get to it very easily and quickly no matter where you are in Moscow. The announcements on the metro are in Russian as well as English so you don’t need to worry if your Russian language skills are not good.

If, like me, you arrive in Moscow via train from Kyiv , then you will arrive at a metro station which many Muscovites believe to be the most beautiful of them all…..

Kievskaya metro station was opened in 1954 and features white marble walls which curve upwards and have with large mosaics surrounded by a gold trim in a very classical style. The mosaics depict life in Ukraine and was designed by a Ukrainian who wanted to display Ukraine’s influence and contribution to Soviet Russia.

Belorusskaya

If you look at a map of the metro , you will want to go in a clockwise direction on the circle line. So you will want to get on the train going in the Barrikadnaya direction and not Park Kultury. Stay on this line until you reach the 2nd station, Belorusskaya. This station was built in 1952 and like Kievskaya also features white marble pylons and a plaster ceiling.

The ceiling features 12 mosaics in an octagonal shape depicting Belarusian life, while the tiling on the floor is said to resemble a Belarusian quilt. One of the passageway exits of the station has a statue called ‘Belarusian Partisans’ of three men wearing long coats, holding guns and carrying a flag.”

Mayakovskaya

To get to the next station, we need to change onto the green line (line 2) and go just one stop to the station of Mayakovskaya. This station has an art deco theme and, for some, resembles an elaborate ballroom. The columns are faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite while the marble walls and ceiling have 34 mosaics with the theme “24-hour Soviet Sky. Apparently, Stalin resided here during the 2nd World War as the station was used as a command post for Moscow’s anti-aircraft regiment.

It’s time to get back on the metro and return to Belorusskaya. At Belorusskaya, change to the circle line again and continue clockwise to the next station, Novoslobodskaya. With its 32 stained glass panels, this station reminds me of a church. The panels were designed by Latvian artists and are surrounded by a brass border.

Prospekt Mira

Back on the metro and again just one stop until our next station, Prospekt Mira. This station was originally called Botanichesky Sad after the nearby Botanical Gardens of the Moscow State University. The pylons are covered in white marble and decorated with floral bas-relief friezes. The ceiling is decorated with casts and several cylindrical chandeliers.

Komsomolskaya

On the metro once more and once more we are going just one stop to the next station – Komsomolskaya. This station is famous for its its yellow ceiling. The chandeliers in this station are huge. The photos below do not do this station justice.  For me, this station resembles a presidential palace.  You hace to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it.

Because of it’s location, this is one of the busiest stations in the Moscow metro as it serves three of the main train stations in the city – Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, and Kazansky so be prepared for a lot of people.

Elektrozavodskaya

When you are ready to leave Komsomolskaya metro station behind, then get back on the circle line and go one stop to Kurskaya and change to the blue line (line 3) and go to two stops to the Elektrozavodskaya station. This station gets it’s name from a nearby electric light bulb factory and has a somewhat industrial but also futuristic style, with 6 rows of circular lamps (there are 318 lamps in total). I think this is one of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro for how unique it is. The station was opened in 1944 after a delay because of the 2nd World War and features 12 marble bas-reliefs of the struggle on the home front during the war.

Ploschad Revolyutsii

Back on the metro line 3 (but in the other direction), getting off at the 3rd stop – Ploschad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). This is located underneath the square in Moscow of the same name and is a short walk from Red Square in the city centre. It is the perfect place to end a visit around Moscow’s metro. The station features red and yellow marble arches with a total of 76 sculptures in between each arch. The sculptures are supposed to represent the people of the Soviet Union and include soldiers, farmers, industrial workers, children etc… I noticed a lot of people touching the golden chicken in the photo below as well as the show of the woman. I am assuming that this is for good luck.

Kievskaya definitely caught me off guard. Didn’t know Moscow metro stations were THIS extravagant! Mayakovskaya is gorgeous too with the marble walls and mosaics. I might just need to book a flight over to admire all of these!

Do it! Kievskaya was my first introduction to the Moscow metro as I got an overnight train from Kyiv.

You know, in the States, all we ever hear is bad stuff about Russia. It’s nice to see other (and lovely!) dimensions of such a controversial place.

It’s the same in the UK which is why I prefer going to see somewhere and making up my own mind. It’s all ‘politics and bullshit’ as I say

' src=

I went to Moscow about 13years for Christmas and went to train stations, so I can see these amazing mosaics and chandeliers. I agree with you that are beautiful Stations for sure and I could of wandered around for days. I think Kievskaya is definitely my favourite out of them all and I even have some similar pictures as you.

I imagine Moscow would have been a little different 13 years ago but these stations have probably always looked beautiful

Food and Footprints

You chose some great stations for this write up! Beautiful details in these stations and would love to visit them sometime. Particularly like the Komsomolskaya station with that yellow ceiling!

Thank you very much. Komsomolskaya seems to be a lot of peoples favourite stations too

Wow! Without the text I would have thought them to be some museum or gallery.

I know exactly what you mean!

Rosie Fluskey

Wow, it is just stunning! How does anyone get to work with so much to look at. I’m surprised at the very bourgeois-looking Komsomolskaya station. I would have thought it was all too Tzarist looking, but then I haven’t been to Russia yet lol. This has just made me want to go more!

' src=

Wow, that’s a lot of artwork. I wonder how old some of these pieces are?

Generally most of the stations are from 1940-1960 approximately. The later stations are more functional than style.

' src=

My mother-in-law was in Moscow fifty years ago and still raves about the metro stations. So far, I could not imagine much. But now! The pictures are great and I think it’s almost a pity that this splendor is underground. But for every user of the Metro can enjoy a free trip to the world of art. Susanne

True. It is like having a free trip to an art museum/gallery. I hope that you can one day visit Moscow and see for yourself.

' src=

Oh wow, I would never have known that these were metro stations. The ceilings remind me of how you need to look up sometimes, even in the commuter rush!

It is true about life in general, we just go from A to B looking directly in front of us instead of around us

' src=

Wow, I would have never guessed that these were stations. The decor is so pretty and not one I’m used to seeing at metro stations. Love the ceiling at The Komsomolskaya metro station.

They certainly don’t look like metro stations. The ceiling there is one of my favourites too!

Christmas gift guide to Moscow surroundings

travel themed decor items

Visitors from America and Western Europe might be surprised to discover that Russia celebrates Christmas on January 7th. That’s because the Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar. After the end of the Soviet Union, some Russians have begun celebrating Christmas on December 25 in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. But many Russians still observe the tradition of fasting on January 6th, breaking the fast with a large feast on Christmas Eve after the first star has appeared in the sky.

During the Soviet era, Christmas and religious traditions were banned in Russia. Santa Claus was replaced by Ded Moroz, or, Grandfather Frost, an old man with a long white beard who would bring gifts to children on New Year’s instead of Christmas. According to Russian tradition, Ded Moroz is accompanied by his granddaughter, Snegurochka, the Snowmaiden, who helps him on his journey to give presents to children.

Although the tradition of having a Christmas tree, known as a yolka in Russian, was also banned during Soviet times, Russians got around this by having New Year’s trees from which they hung homemade decorations. Today, the restrictions of the Soviet Union have faded into history, and during the Christmas season visitors to Russia can even purchase Christmas ornaments in the shape of matryoshka dolls, or religious icons that depict nativity scenes.

Heading counterclockwise around the Golden Ring this holiday season, northeast of Moscow, your first stop will most likely be the city of Vladimir, home to some of Russia’s most striking churches and cathedrals. The Vladimir region is known for its fine crystal. Stop by the Crystal, Lacquer Miniatures, and Embroidery Museum ( 2 Bolshaya Moskovskaya ) for an overview of traditional crafts before visiting the gift shop in the museum to browse the crystal selection. Vladimir Chic ( 2 Dvoryanskaya ) also sells local glass and crystal work.

Typical souvenirs are also for sale in Vladimir’s old town, especially by the Golden Gate, a triumphal arch and defensive tower that is one of the last-remaining parts of the wall that once surrounded ancient Vladimir and a sure stop on any tour of the Golden Ring.

Just 63 kilometers from Vladimir lays the nearby city of Gus-Khrustalny , the ‘Crystal Goose,’ also home to a rich glass and crystal making tradition. You can visit the glassmaking factory in Gus-Khrustalny and buy gifts ranging from plates and vases to decanters, or visit the outlet store back in Moscow ( 4 Ilyinka ) just east of the Kremlin.

North of Vladimir, you’ll arrive in Suzdal, one of the Golden Ring route’s more tranquil towns. Suzdal boasts a number of small bazaars and stands outside the main tourist sites where visitors can purchase local honey mead, called medovukha, along with traditional crafts, like a pair valenki, or Russian woolen boots, which make an ideal Christmas gift for friends and family back home. The shopping stands outside Suzdal’s Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life ( Ul. Pushkarskaya ) are also highly recommended. Market Square ( Torgovaya Pl ) houses a number of shops where visitors can search for arts and crafts.

Following the Golden Ring north of Suzdal, many tours will stop in the city of Kostroma, a former trading outpost on the immense Volga River. One of the city’s highlights is the Museum of Linen and Birchbark ( 38 Tereshkova ), where visitors can view exhibits on traditional Russian crafts woven from flax and bark. A gift shop in the basement sells tablecloths, napkins, baskets, linen dolls, and traditional clothing typical of the region.

South from Kostroma, stop in the city of Rostov-Veliky for enamel jewelry, a craft which allows artists to produce small paintings on metal that are then fired to produce a thin glaze over the image. Rostov became famous for its tradition of enamel work. Today, visitors can purchase rings, earrings, bracelets, brooches, and jewelry boxes in the gift shop of the Rostov Enamel factory ( 3 Borisoglebskoye Highway ).

While you’re in Rostov, visit the House of Crafts ( 16 Vtoraya Tolstovskaya Naberezhnaya ) for local pottery and the Souvenirs shop ( 5 Ul. Kamennyi Most ) for ushanka hats—Russian fur caps with earflaps—paintings, and samovars for tea lovers.

The last two stops on a tour of the Golden Ring are the cities of Pereslavl-Zalesskiy and Sergiev Posad. Pereslavl is most famous for its embroidery work, available at the Art Salon ( 12 Ul. Sovetskaya ) along with souvenirs made of wood and stone. Nearby Sergiev Posad is considered the place where Russia’s matryoshka dolls were first invented, and was the chief production center of the dolls before Soviet times. Visit the city’s Toy Museum ( 123 Pr. Krasny Armii ) to get a better sense of the birthplace of one of Russia’s most recognizable toys, then head over to the market alongside the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius—one of the city’s most important sites—to load up on matryoshka dolls, painted eggs, and icons before going home.

If you’ll be in the Golden Ring during New Years, the city of Vladimir hosts an impressive Christmas fair, with an iceskating rink and performances by local artists, in the main square ( Sobornaya Pl ). In most other Golden Ring cities you’ll find similar events in the center square as Christmas nears.

Most shops and markets in the Golden Ring are open year round. If you’re coming to Russia for a short period of time, whether in winter or summer, consider a trip to this stunning part of the country, and bring an extra bag if you plan to go shopping for Christmas gifts.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
