Everybody loves a great day by the sea, and Felixstowe has great days for everyone.

Did you know.

Felixstowe is the only seaside resort in East Anglia to face southwards. Enjoy a cup of coffee at the View Point Cafe and you won’t be able to miss the huge container port at its southernmost point - known to be the largest container port in Britain.

The John Bradfield Viewing Area at Landguard Point offers stunning views across the estuary to the Shotley Peninsula and the Essex towns of Harwich and Dovercourt and if the weather is really clear you can even see the off-shore wind turbines beyond The Naze.

Famous visitors to the town include Wallis Simpson who stayed in the town for six weeks during the abdication and the actor Sir John Mills who grew up in Felixstowe. You can find a theatre named after him in nearby Ipswich.

15 Best Things to Do in Felixstowe (Suffolk, England)

On the North Sea between the Orwell and Deben Estuaries, Felixstowe is a coastal town with both an Edwardian spa resort and a major shipping port.

The Port of Felixstowe is the busiest in the UK, with almost half of Britain’s containerised trade passing through every year.

This huge enterprise is on the Orwell Estuary, which is shielded by the aptly named Landguard Peninsula.

This was the site of the last attempted seaborne invasion of England in 1667 and is armed with one of the best preserved artillery forts in the country.

As a holiday destination, Felixstowe came into its own in Edwardian times when the upper class came to “take” the spa waters.

On the seafront there’s a tapestry of ornamental gardens from that time, as well as a Spa Pavilion for live entertainment and a newly renovated Edwardian pier.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Felixstowe :

1. Landguard Fort

Landguard Fort

The Landguard Peninsula has been armed with a fort since 1540 to defend the approach to Harwich Harbour.

In 1667 this was the site of the last opposed seaborne invasion of England, when a Dutch contingent of 2,000 landed at Felixstowe Beach and were fought off by the Royal Marines in their first ever land battle.

In its current form the fort dates to a rebuild in the early 18th century, and additional outside batteries were installed in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The fort was decommissioned in 1956 and has a labyrinth of rooms and passageways to navigate with the help of audioguides.

In the magazines you can find out the kind of firepower that this facility used to wield, while you can climb up the Harwich Bastion for the ultimate view of the Port of Felixstowe.

2. Felixstowe Museum

Felixstowe Museum

The Victorian submarine mining establishment at Landguard Fort houses the Felixstowe Museum, which has 14 rooms bursting with artefacts.

You can examine mammoth tusks, cannon balls, fossils, Medieval coins, Roman ceramics, peer into a submarine mine and find out all about the steamers that used to dock at Felixstowe Pier.

There are also some curious medical displays from the defunct St Audry’s Hospital.

In the Second World War Felixstowe was a Coastal Forces base, and has an aircraft seat, models and RAF uniforms harking back to that time.

From the 1st to the 4th centuries AD, the Landguard Peninsula was inhabited by Romans, who left behind pottery, coins and jewellery, a selection of which is on show at the museum.

3. Felixstowe Seafront Gardens

Felixstowe Seafront Gardens

North of the pier there’s a string of eight Victorian and Edwardian gardens, which have helped earn Felixstowe the epithet, “The Garden Resort of East Anglia”. These delightful gardens are laid out on terraces cascading down the cliff, forming a continuous pleasure ground.

The Seafront Gardens were born with the completion of a pump room, allowing visitors to “take” the natural spring water that rises from the cliff’s rock.

The gardens continue, one after the other, for a kilometre along the seafront, and still have most of their original planting, paths, and lots of turn-of-the-century features.

There are Pulhamite grottos, waterfalls, fountains, sculptures and elegant old shelters, all in a wonderland of brilliant flowerbeds, exotic palms and immaculately clipped shrubs.

A designated heritage trail points out the many fixtures that have survived for more than a century.

4. Felixstowe Pier

Felixstowe Pier

Central to Felixstowe’s waterfront since 1905, Felixstowe Pier has had a troubled history.

When it opened more than 110 years ago the pier had its own train station and was a landing point for steamers that linked Felixstowe with destinations like London and Great Yarmouth.

Fears of a German invasion led to the pierhead being demolished in the Second World War and after decades of slow deterioration the remainder of the pier was closed to the public because of safety concerns in 1999. The good news is that a multimillion pound redevelopment has just been completed at the landward end, featuring a family entertainment centre with arcade machines and retro-style ten-pin bowling.

There’s also an ice cream parlour, fish and chip shop and the Boardwalk Cafe Bar where you can savour the distant sea views.

5. Felixstowe Ferry

Felixstowe Ferry

Three miles up the coast from Felixstowe Pier you’ll discover Felixstowe’s more peaceful side.

Felixstowe Ferry is a lovable maritime hamlet at the mouth of the River Debren.

On the shore are old boat huts, weatherboard houses, a pub, a church, a sailing club and a boatyard.

Bobbing in the estuary waters are houseboats and small fishing craft, and in the mornings you can buy freshly caught fish next to the water.

Two of Felixstowe’s four Martello towers (Napoleonic era coastal defences) guard the waterfront at Felixstowe Ferry.

You can reach this charming place on foot from the main promenade.

After poking around the hamlet you can catch the ferry over to Bawdsey Manor or carry on up the Deben Estuary.

A short way inland you’ll come to the King’s Fleet, a waterway used by Edward III to assemble his fleet before setting sail to claim the French throne at the start of the Hundred Years’ War in 1338.

6. Felixstowe South Beach

Felixstowe South Beach

One reason families set a course for Felixstowe in summer is to enjoy the four miles of beach on a sheltered, gently curving bay.

Although the beach is continuous, the stretch north of the pier is known as the North Beach and is mostly shingled, while the longer South Beach has a mix of sand and shingles and is the beach of choice for families.

For the full length of the beach there’s a tarmac promenade lined with beach huts and navigated by a road train during the school holidays and on weekends year round.

There’s enough sand on the South Beach to build sandcastles, while on cooler days you can take a refreshing walk along the shore, watch the giant container ships pulling into the port and do some beachcombing.

All along Sea Road are fish and chip shops, amusement arcades and ice cream parlours in summer.

7. Martello Park

Martello Park

There’s another seafront park behind the promenade at the southern end of Sea Road.

Martello Park is named for the Napoleonic coastal defence that sits right on the lawn and has just been restored.

This structure is built from more than 750,000 bricks, and after the Napoleonic Wars became a coastguard station and then a radio station in the First World War.

The park has a generous swathe of grass for picnics during beach trips, as well as a splash pad for children, open April to October, and two kiosks for refreshments.

8. Landguard Visitor Centre

Landguard Visitor Centre

Right beside Landguard Fort and the Felixstowe Museum is a visitor centre with exhibitions about the history and nature of the peninsula.

Kids can get to grips with hands-on displays and multimedia screens, while there’s also a cafe if you’d like something indulgent, a salad, full meal or just a welcome hot drink in winter.

Just in front of the visitor centre you can catch a ferry over the estuary to take a tour of Harwich, which has a quaint old town on a grid pattern.

9. John Bradfield Viewing Area

John Bradfield Viewing Area

On the shingle beach outside the Landguard Visitor Centre is the best vantage point for the busiest container port in the UK. At this outdoor terrace you can watch the Port of Felixstowe’s humungous container ships navigating one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

Some 3,000 ships dock at Felixstowe Port every year, arriving from 400 ports around the world and run by more than 30 shipping lines.

You’ll also see the Harwich/Shotley ferry shuttling across the channel, looking miniscule compared to the immense container ships.

Aside from the ships, you can look west and northwest to contemplate the Stour and Orwell Estuaries, or across to the Shotley Peninsula and the towns of Dovercourt and Harwich.

10. Trimley Marshes

Trimley Marshes

When the Port of Felixstowe was upgraded in the 1990s, this site at the mouth of the River Orwell was chosen as a wetland habitat for migrating and resident birds to replace the Fagbury Mudflats, which were lost in the expansion.

It’s incredible to think that until that time the Trimley Marshes were actually farmland, and that the pools, reedbeds and wet meadows have come about by human intervention.

Avocets, ringed plovers and tufted ducks nest around the reserve’s lagoon and islands.

Spring and autumn bring migrants like greenshanks, curlew sandpipers and common sandpipers, which come to forage on the muddy banks in large numbers.

Due to the coastal setting you may be able to spot some species rare to these shores like stilt sandpipers, lack-winged stilts and pectoral sandpipers.

11. Forum Amusement Centre

Forum Amusement Centre

Attractions like this have been the soul of English seaside resorts since Victorian times.

The Forum Amusement Centre is all about games like claw machines, coin pushers, fruit machines and a variety of arcade video games.

There’s also an array of those classic games where children and grownups can earn tokens for prizes like cuddly toys.

The Forum has a food court for treats like fish and chips, as well as a souvenir shop selling Felixstowe rock candy.

12. Manning’s Amusement Park

Manning's Amusement Park

Set around a splendid Art Deco pavilion from 1932, Manning’s Amusement Park promises an hour or two of fun for teenagers and younger children.

The park has an amusement arcade, crazy golf, a funfair, old-school fair games, a ten-pin bowling alley and a busy market on Sundays.

The first owner was none other than by W. E. Butlin, who became famous for his chain of holiday parks, and has been managed by the Manning family since 1946. In its early years there was a man-made rowing lake with an island that was literally inhabited by monkeys.

13. Spa Pavilion

Spa Pavilion

A linchpin of Felixstowe’s waterfront is this performing arts venue first built in 1909 to replace the town’s bandstand.

The Spa Pavilion was completely reworked in 1939, but was damaged in the Second World War, which explains its partial Modernist exterior dating to 1950. The gargantuan Art Deco auditorium is from the 1939-rebuild and can seat more than 900 people.

The theatre was owned by the Suffolk Coastal District Council up to the 2010s, but was sold off for just £1 as cost-cutting measure.

Since 2015 the Spa Pavilions has bounced back as a community venue, and is a go-to for touring comedians, dance companies, musicals, tribute acts and all kinds of guilty pleasures.

14. Felixstowe Road Train

Felixstowe Road Train

Families visiting Felixstowe with younger children can use an unconventional mode of transport to get around the long seafront promenade.

The Felixstowe Road Train runs 11:00-16:00 every day during the school holidays, but also on weekends all year round.

You can catch it from Manor End by the entrance to Martello Park in the south, up to the Spa Pavilion.

The train stops at Manning’s Amusements, Ocean Boulevard, the Pier and Bent Hill before reaching the Spa Pavilion.

Tickets are £2.50 for adults and £1 for children.

Golf

The highly-rated Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club is the only links course in the county of Suffolk, as well as one of only 246 genuine links courses in the world.

The course was founded in 1880 and picks up new awards by the year, including Championship Venue of the Year by England Golf in 2018. Green fees at the prestigious Martello Course are priced at £60, and it’s an experience not soon forgotten, not least for its coastal scenery, taking in another of Felixstowe’s Martello towers.

For a more casual round Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club has a nine-hole pay and play beside the River Debren . Back on Sea Road, families can put their putting skills to the test at Adventure Golf, set among water gardens and strange Mesoamerican statues.

travel to felixstowe

Felixstowe Ferry is perhaps the most charming part of the town. It's in the far north, beyond the golf club, at the mouth of the River Deben. It's a popular place for sailing and walks. It has good real ale pub (see below). It is best to park at the cliff top car park as there is little parking at Felixstowe ferry.

The promenade stretches 1 mile north and south of the pier two limes in total, and expect for a small length there is a good path (it is part of the Suffolk Coast long distance path) between Landguard Fort and Felixstowe Ferry. North is generally quite pleasant, with landscaped gardens and quiet shingle beaches.

In the centre of the tourist area, by the sea, there are some excellent arcades, including the famous Mannings Amusement Park (including crazy golf). There is a Sunday market beside Mannings, and a car boot sale on Saturday

Further south the beach gives way to a very industrialised dock area. In the middle of this is a little wildlife haven, around Landguard Fort. It's popular with bird watchers.

The sea shore is the site of the last opposed invasion of England in 1667 and the first land battle of the Royal Marines. The fort was built in the 18th century, modified in the 19th century with substantial additional 19th- and 20th-century outside batteries. The fort is open every day from Easter to October.

The nearby submarine mining building houses Felixstowe museum’s collections of local interest and is open Sundays & Wednesdays in summer.

People on the beach at Felixstowe on a blue-sky day.

Returning home to Felixstowe: ‘Stories are everywhere’

Novelist Hayley Long always thought her home town, on the Suffolk coast, was a bit of a joke but now she’s proud of its gentle charm

  • Plus: three more glorious, less well-known coastal destinations

O n my bookshelf I have a 1914 Ward Lock travel guide to Felixstowe. I’ve had it for years and it introduces the town I grew up in with words that make me smile each time I read them. “There is in Felixstowe and its surroundings, a combination of grace, prettiness and interest which lingers pleasantly in the memory when the visitor returns to regions less captivating.” It’s the most gorgeously alluring description of my home town that I’ve ever encountered and, while my smile may once have been followed by a hoot of incredulous laughter, these days I take the words at face value and respect them.

I’m not the first person who has ever been guilty of questioning Felixstowe’s charms. When I tell people where I’m from, the conversation usually shifts quickly to Southwold or Aldeburgh. And I do understand why. As a teenager, I looked out of my bedroom window and saw shipping containers. It’s only as a visitor that I’ve come to appreciate Felixstowe for the vibrant and very diverse place that it is and, finally, I recognise the grace and prettiness which was right under my teenage nose all along.

Boats at low tide on the shore at Felixstowe, UK.

OK, so it isn’t the most fashionable town on the Suffolk coast and I’m not about to argue that it’s the prettiest either, but it’s infinitely more attractive than might be expected of the UK’s biggest container port. The pier is the new gem on the seafront, but there is plenty more that sparkles. Just opposite, the Alex has been a favourite spot to dine and look at the sea for decades. Not so far back, it was a formal tea room from a forgotten age, but today it’s a friendly modern cafe and brasserie with a menu to make anyone happy. Downstairs, you’ll find delicious all-day breakfasts made with locally sourced ingredients while upstairs offers a broader choice. The seafood medley and chips is every bit as good as it should be and the salt-baked beetroot, tomato and feta tarte tatin comes with my personal recommendation. There are cocktails, too, including a delicious espresso martini, or you can enjoy a pint of Adnams’ Southwold bitter if that’s more your tipple.

Further down the promenade, Grade II-listed gardens rise in terraces up the cliffs and, at the top, Edwardian mansions stand proud and provide a reminder of the grandeur of Felixstowe in its heyday. Of these, the most impressive is the enormous Harvest House, which stands above the Spa Pavilion . Today, Harvest House is a retirement complex, but its exterior is surely no less impressive than when it opened in 1903 as the Felix Hotel. The hotel’s best-known guest arrived in 1936. Wallis Simpson laid low here as she waited for the divorce that would leave her free to marry Edward VIII and shift the course of British history.

Stories are everywhere in Felixstowe. A short walk from Harvest House will bring you to a luxury apartment block on Bath Hill. This is all that remains of the Bath Hotel which closed in April 1914 after being almost entirely burned to the ground by suffragettes. In an ironic twist, there is now a plaque commemorating the fire-starters, Evalina Burkitt and the fabulously named Florence Tunks. Fortunately, Burkitt and Tunks didn’t do any permanent damage to Felixstowe’s hotel trade. There are plenty of places for today’s visitors to stay. A good option is the Fludyers Hotel . Edwardian on the outside and modern on the inside, it has a welcoming bar and restaurant, and best of all a heated terrace looking out to sea. There are many guesthouses, too, but you may feel like you’re staying at your nana’s. In truth, the price of rooms here is refreshingly reasonable wherever you choose to stay.

Felixstowe beach hut

But Felixstowe is much more than famous lost hotels and historic links to determined women. Positioned between two estuaries, the town offers some startling and varied landscapes. To the north is the picture-postcard area known as Felixstowe Ferry . Stilted beach houses stand next to the River Deben at the point where it joins the North Sea. Wooden kiosks sell freshly caught seafood, sailing dinghies zigzag through the water and everything smells powerfully of fish. An actual passenger ferry – picture a rowing boat with an outboard engine – carries customers across the choppy estuary to Bawdsey. And for those who would rather stick to dry land, the Ferry Café unsurprisingly has a great reputation for its fish and chips. But the top destination in this corner of Felixstowe is probably the Ferry Boat Inn . Fish is big on the menu here, too – and more Adnams ale – all enjoyed in impeccable 15th-century comfort.

To the south is the Orwell estuary and the Landguard peninsula. Much of this is a nature reserve, but at its tip is Landguard Fort , a sprawling world of cement and stone that looks like a stage set for Game of Thrones . It’s a fascinating place to visit and, even on a sunny day, it can feel incredibly desolate. A short walk away is the View Point, where people sip tea in parked cars or in the View Point Café and watch the constant comings and goings of a busy port. There’s a ferry here, too, taking foot passengers across to Harwich – if their stomachs can stand it. And, of course, there are cranes. A row of them disappears around the headland. And anyone who thinks this sounds ugly should sit on the cafe’s terrace with a fisherman’s breakfast or a cream tea and just watch the drama. There’s a hypnotic beauty to it all that could have come straight out of the mind of HG Wells.

Felixstowe terraced gardens

Back in the town centre there is still more to enjoy, especially for anyone who loves to read. The Treasure Chest and Poor Richard’s Books are two labyrinthine secondhand bookshops, and Stillwater Books is a lovely little place selling new stock.

An Adnams shop brings a taste of Southwold to the high street and quirky delights such as Vintage by the Sea are another signifier of the town’s buoyancy. One weekend every summer there’s a book festival, too. But crucially, all year round, the whole place feels lived-in lively. And that’s because Felixstowe is a town that has plenty to attract tourists without being exclusively a tourist town. For me, that’s its real winning magic.

Hayley Long will be appearing at Felixstowe Book Festival on 30 June

Three more glorious, less well-known coastal destinations

Filey, North Yorkshire

Filey esplanade and beach, East Yorkshire, England, UK

This Edwardian seaside spot between Scarborough and Bridlington is a seaside classic, complete with promenade, boating lake, horseshoe-shaped sandy bay and a bandstand. There’s a nature reserve, birdwatching and even porpoise sightings in summer. Walk along the sandy beach all the way to Filey Brigg, a finger of rock reaching into the sea, look across to Filey Bay and, in late summer, look out for minke and sei whales. yorkshirecoastnature.co.uk

Alnmouth, Northumberland Sitting on the Aln Estuary, Alnmouth, like Filey, has a glorious sandy beach, distinctively coloured houses and buckets to do beyond the obligatory castle-hopping. Within the Northumberland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it has excellent birdwatching opportunities and coastal walks and cycling along the Coasts and Castles Cycle Route. Try an aromatic visit to Howick Hall, home to the Earls Grey, as in the tea ( howickhallgardens.org ).

Maldon, Essex As seaside gems go, Maldon is as nostalgic as a stick of rock. It has an Edwardian promenade, beach huts, a playground, a splash park, great pubs and, for nature lovers, salt marshes and birdwatching. Water babies can go sailing or you can charter a Thames sailing barge (stay overnight if you want to) to take you across the Blackwater Estuary. There are coastal walks that lead you through boatyards and quaysides, as well as to Heybridge Basin. Lunch is your reward, at the waterfront Old Ship pub. Alternatively, buy picnic supplies from the Maldon Smokehouse.
