Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms collapse as thousands still owed refunds

The administration, which affects more than 4,000 customers, comes after the Travel Trust Association revoked the memberships of Teletext and Alpharooms on Friday

  • Updated 09:09, 7 Jan 2022

Travel giants Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms have reportedly collapsed – in a move that could affect tens of thousands of holidaymakers still waiting on refunds.

The administration, which affects more than 4,000 customers, comes after the Travel Trust Association (TTA) revoked the memberships of Teletext and Alpharooms on Friday on the back of financial concerns.

Consumer website MoneySavingExpert , which first reported the news, said Robert Cundy and Bijal Shah of Edge Recovery and Insolvency Practitioners had been hired by Truly Holdings on December 1, 2021, and the company is understood to now be in liquidation.

The TTA, a trade body, confirmed that directors at Truly Holdings, which owns both firms, “sought the appointment of liquidators” after the company was pulled up by the UK’s competitions watchdog for failing to pay out millions in refunds for holidays cancelled due to Covid .

According to statements issued by the two firms, Teletext Holidays is no longer taking new bookings, although it will honour existing holidays.

Any future bookings made via Alpharooms will not be fulfilled.

The Mirror has contacted Truly Holdings for a comment and will update this story shortly.

What it means for you

If you’re currently on a Teletext holiday, your trip should not be affected.

The TTA said it has contacted all suppliers and requested that all bookings remain in place.

Flights are also ATOL protected, meaning your return flight home will still go ahead.

All Teletext package holidays will continue as planned.

if the firm goes bust , the TTA says you will still be able to go on your holiday as normal, or receive a full refund, which will be covered by ATOL.

If you have booked accommodation with Alpharooms, however, this will no longer be valid.

However, you can claim for a refund. The TTA said all customers with an Alpharooms accommodation-booking have been contacted and offered a refund.

To claim your refund for your Alpharooms booking you will need to file a refund request and provide proof of payment and any reference numbers.

The TTA said refunds could up to 12 weeks to be processed.

I'm still waiting for a Covid refund

The CMA is in the process of taking Truly Holdings to court over a failure by the company to fully refund those who had holidays cancelled due to the pandemic.

The CMA said it continues to monitor the situation and will take action to claw back the money owed by Truly Holdings.

The watchdog said: "We are monitoring the situation and are seeking further clarification. While these reports will concern people awaiting refunds, we will continue to take all possible action to get people the money they are owed.”

A claims process for all customers awaiting refunds will be put in place shortly by the TTA.

You may also be able to claim a refund if you paid on credit card, via Section 75.

Alternatively, if you paid on a debit card, speak to your bank as you may quality for a Chargeback claim – this is essentially when the transaction is reversed.

You can contact the TTA directly with any questions about your booking via [email protected].

Court finds that Teletext Holidays broke consumer law

The High Court has today found that Truly Travel and Alpha Holidays broke consumer law by failing to refund customers within the legally-required timeframe.

  • CMA chief executive: “we hope the decision will make it easier for people to get their money back for a cancelled holiday in the future”

The High Court agreed with the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that Truly Travel Ltd and Alpha Holidays Ltd – which traded as Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms respectively – breached the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations (PTRs). These required them to refund customers for package holidays that were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic within 14 days.

The CMA sought a declaration from the High Court in this case to highlight the importance of travel firms respecting consumers’ refund rights. The CMA wants to ensure that people can book package holidays with confidence, knowing that their legal rights will be respected if their holiday is cancelled due to unavoidable circumstances outside their control.

This court action follows a significant programme of consumer protection law enforcement work by the CMA in the package travel sector, which has secured hundreds of millions of pounds in refunds for people whose holidays were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Because Truly Travel and Alpha Holidays have been placed into liquidation, Teletext Holidays or Alpharooms package travel customers with outstanding refunds are encouraged to submit a claim to the Travel Trust Association (TTA), which is now responsible for these. Today’s court decision does not affect this.

Andrea Coscelli, Chief Executive of the CMA, said:

This should be a wake-up call to any business that thinks that it doesn’t need to honour customers’ refund rights. Today’s ruling confirms the CMA’s view that Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms broke the law by not providing the refunds customers were due within 14 days for cancelled package holidays. While this ruling comes after these firms have been placed in liquidation, we hope the decision will make it easier for people to get their money back for a cancelled holiday in the future. Customers of Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms with outstanding refunds should get in touch with the Travel Trust Association.

The CMA launched court action against Truly Holdings, and its subsidiaries Truly Travel Ltd and Alpha Holidays Ltd, last year, over outstanding refunds owed to customers. Truly Holdings had previously signed formal commitments, known as undertakings, requiring them to use all reasonable endeavours to pay outstanding refunds to passengers in an agreed schedule, and to ensure that all refunds due for cancelled package holidays going forward were paid within 14 days. When the CMA found that Truly Holdings was not fully abiding by these undertakings, the CMA took the company to court.

The court claim for refunds was stayed – paused indefinitely – after the firms entered liquidation, but the CMA continued to seek a declaration from the court that these companies broke the law. This has resulted in the ruling made today.

For more information, visit the CMA’s case page on COVID-19 package holiday cancellations.

Notes to Editors

  • Teletext Holidays is the trading name of Truly Travel Limited, which is a subsidiary of Truly Holdings Limited. Truly Travel Limited and Alpha Holidays Limited (which trades as Alpharooms.com) are both subsidiaries of Truly Holdings Limited.
  • The CMA’s investigation relates to package travel holidays booked with Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms.com, not flights or accommodation booked on a standalone basis.
  • The CMA is encouraging package travel customers of Truly Travel and Alpha Holidays with outstanding refunds to submit a claim via an online form to the Travel Trust Association (TTA). The online form differs for Truly Travel customers and Alpha Holiday customers .
  • The declaration from the High Court today follows an uncontested hearing on the papers which took place on 22 February 2022.

Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms' parent company on verge of collapse

Truly Travel has had its membership of the Travel Trust Association revoked - here's everything you need to know

The parent company of Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms has stopped trading and is in the process of appointing liquidators, BusinessLive has learnt.

Truly Travel has also had its membership of trade body Travel Trust Association (TTA) revoked after the TTA said it could not meet payments to non-travel creditors.

The announcement comes just weeks after the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it was launching court action against Truly Travel for its "inadequate progress" on refunding package trips cancelled due to the pandemic.

In May, the CMA said Truly Travel had signed a voluntary agreement committing to refund package holiday customers for trips cancelled because of Covid.

But Truly Travel failed to meet its refund deadlines , leaving furious holidaymakers around the UK out of pocket.

The watchdog warned in September that it would take Truly Holdings to court unless it took urgent action to process refunds.

Dozens of people got in touch with BusinessLive earlier this year to say they had not been paid and hundreds of people made complaints to the CMA about Truly Travel. There are also now 3,500 individuals who have joined a Facebook group called ‘Alpharooms No Refund Support’.

BusinessLive asked the CMA what would happen in relation to the court action and what it was doing to help consumers who had still not received refunds, but the watchdog did not provide a specific response.

Instead, a CMA spokesperson said: “We are monitoring the situation and are seeking further clarification. While these reports will concern people awaiting refunds, we will continue to take all possible action to get people the money they are owed.”

Truly Travel did not respond to a request for comment.

What does this mean for upcoming holidays?

According to the TTA, all customers with upcoming Teletext Holidays bookings have had their bookings re-contracted with TTA Travel and the holiday will go ahead as planned.

The TTA said financial protection remains in place for these bookings through its own scheme and also through ATOL. It said any unpaid balances, when applicable, will still be collected.

The TTA said no Alpharooms bookings would be fulfilled. Customers are being told to submit a claim for refunds on accommodation on the TTA website.

What if you're already on holiday?

The TTA has said that those already away on holiday should not be affected - and that it has contacted all suppliers and requested all bookings to remain in place.

The Teletext package holidays taken on by the TTA are all ATOL protected, which means even if Teletext Holidays collapses, customer's flights will still be valid.

What about customers still waiting for refunds?

All Truly Travel customers with bookings that were cancelled due to Covid, who are still expecting a refund, are now required to submit a claims form as part of the process overseen by the TTA.

To complete the claims process, proof of payment made to Truly Travel is required for both the deposit and the balance paid.

The TTA estimates that refunds will take up to 12 weeks once the claims are confirmed.

New to TTG?

Tta begins making teletext holidays and alpharooms refunds.

Gary Noakes

The Travel Trust Association (TTA) has begun processing claims from Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms after TTA membership was terminated.

eCard

It comes after parent Truly Travel had its TTA membership terminated on Friday (29 October) by The Travel Network Group, which incorporates the TTA.

A TTA spokesperson said: “All Truly Travel, trading as Teletext Holidays, package holidays have been re-contracted with TTA Travel, the fulfilment travel company for Travel Trust Association.

“This means that all these bookings remain in place and continue to be financially protected through the Atol scheme and the trust account model operated by Travel Trust Association.

"All customers have been written to and they do not need to action anything. Payments for balances will be collected by TTA Travel and TTA Travel will make the payment to the relevant suppliers.”

The spokesperson added Alpharooms accommodation bookings were being refunded by the TTA. “TTA Travel has a claims process in place for all customers with accommodation-only bookings – they need to submit details of their booking with Alpha Holidays, including proof of payment for both the deposit and the balance.

“We anticipate that once the claims are confirmed, refunds will take up to 12 weeks.”

The TTA said customers in resort should not be affected and upcoming bookings “remain in place” as these had been re-contracted with TTA.

Truly Travel was the subject of an investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority, which began legal action after the operator allegedly failed to provide refunds to package customers within 14 days during the pandemic. Truly told TTG last month it had repaid £10.8 million but had £1.2 million outstanding.

A CMA spokesperson said: “We are monitoring the situation and are seeking further clarification. While these reports will concern people awaiting refunds, we will continue to take all possible action to get people the money they are owed.”

The TTA spokesperson added: ”All costumers with bookings that have been cancelled due to Covid, who are due to receive a refund from Truly Travel are now required to submit a claims form, as part of the process overseen by Travel Trust Association.” The CAA said the issue was being dealt with by the TTA “because of the way their franchise agreement is set up”.

Truly Travel, which owns both Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms, have ceased trading and are in the process of appointing liquidators, as they cannot meet payments to non-travel creditors.

As a result their membership with Travel Trust Association has been revoked and both firms have stopped taking new bookings while Alpharooms is also unable to fulfil any existing reservations.

It comes after the firms  face court action after failing to return refunds to some of its package holiday customers who had trips cancelled during the pandemic.

The Competition and Markets Authority ordered both to pay back customers after many said they were still awaiting refunds and it requested a court order after they failed to do so.

Teletext Holiday and Alpharooms are not taking new bookings after failing to offer refunds

Both companies have now had their membership with Travel Trust Association, a trade body, closed as of 29 October with no reason given for the change.

Teletext's website reveals that customers with existing Teletext Holiday bookings will have their holidays honoured although they have now have been re-contracted with TTA Travel.

However, those with existing Alpharooms bookings will not be fulfilled and customers will have to fill out a form to claim a refund.

How this is money can help.

  • What you need to know about money every week: This is Money podcast

This is Money heard from hundreds of people who were frustrated about not receiving their funds, some of which were waiting for thousands of pounds.

Truly Holidays formally agreed in May to address failures to issue timely refunds after thousands of Teletext customers complained they had not received their money back.

However, after reviewing Truly Holdings' final report on progress with repayments, the CMA wrote to the firm on 16 September stating it would take the company to court unless it took urgent action to improve how it handles refunds to package holiday customers.

Last month, the regulator said it does not consider that Truly Holdings has done enough to provide refunds to package holiday customers with outstanding claims, including recent cancellations, or to make sure that it pays all future refunds that are due within the 14 days.

As a result, the CMA will be asking the court to order that Truly Holdings puts in place appropriate processes to ensure it complies with the law in the future.

It added that as it considers Truly Holdings is in breach of the law and that harm to consumers is ongoing, it is seeking that the claim be expedited, so that the case can be heard more quickly.

However, it is for the court to determine a date for the hearing.

A CMA spokesperson said: 'We are monitoring the situation and are seeking further clarification. While these reports will concern people awaiting refunds, we will continue to take all possible action to get people the money they are owed.'

This is Money has contacted Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms for comment.

Many customers of both Teletext and Alpharooms have taken to social media to vent their frustration.

Some customers have even claimed they turned up to their accommodation abroad to find their rooms had been cancelled by Alpharooms with no warning.

What do customers need to do?

What does this mean for future bookings?

All Teletext Holidays package holidays have been re-contracted with TTA Travel, the fulfilment travel company for Travel Trust Association.

This means that all these bookings remain in place and continue to be financially protected through the ATOL scheme and the trust account model operated by Travel Trust Association.

All customers have been written to and they do not need to action anything. Payments for balances will be collected by TTA Travel and TTA Travel will make the payment to the relevant suppliers.

For Alpharooms bookings, accommodation only bookings are not ATOL protected.

As of 25 October, no accommodation-only bookings were fulfilled and customers were contacted and offered a refund.

TTA Travel has a claims process in place for all customers with accommodation only bookings – they need to submit details of their booking with Alpha Holidays, including proof of payment for both the deposit and the balance.

The Operations Team at TTA Travel will then review all submitted claims and advise customers of next steps. It anticipates that once the claims are confirmed, refunds will take up to 12 weeks.

What about people who are currently abroad on one of the holidays? Will their bookings still stand?

Customers of Teletext Holidays who are currently in resort should not be impacted.

TTA Travel has contacted all suppliers and requested that all bookings remain in place, as TTA Travel has made or will make payment, depending on the date of travel.

Upcoming bookings remain in place, as these have been re-contracted with TTA Travel.

What about people who are still waiting for refunds from last year?

All customers with bookings that have been cancelled due to Covid, who are due to receive a refund from Truly Travel are now required to submit a claims form, as part of the process overseen by Travel Trust Association.

To complete the claims process, proof of payment made to Truly Travel is required for both the deposit and the balance paid.

Teletext holidays stops taking new bookings.

travel trust association alpharooms

The beleaguered holiday company, alongside sister company AlphaRooms, no longer holds an ATOL licence or Travel Trust Association (TTA) membership.

Teletext Holidays has stopped taking holiday bookings two weeks after the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched court action against the company over inadequate progress on refunds to package holiday customers.

The Travel Trust Association (TTA), part of The Travel Network Group, will look after and fulfil the firms’ ATOL-protected bookings through TTA Travel.

On 18 October the CMA filed proceedings requesting a court order that outstanding refunds be immediately repaid by Teletext Holidays and that, going forward, customers who are entitled to a refund are repaid within 14 days.

The regulator had been investigating Truly Holdings Ltd, the company that operates Teletext Holidays and its sister company Alpharooms.com, after customers complained of not receiving refunds for trips that couldn’t go ahead due to the pandemic.

Last summer, YourMoney reported how customers of the holiday firm had  refund requests ignored and debit card chargebacks requests disputed .

A Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Tweet on Friday said: “Truly Travel Ltd (trading as Teletext Holidays) no longer holds an ATOL licence. Consumers impacted by this news should seek support from the Travel Trust Association.”

However, a statement on the TTA’s website said: “Truly Travel Limited, trading as Teletext Holidays is no longer a member of Travel Trust Association, as of 29th October 2021.

“Your Truly Travel booking has been re-contracted with TTA Travel and your holiday will go ahead as planned. The financial protection remains in place with TTA Travel ATOL T7173. The balance, when applicable, will be collected as advised at the time of confirming your booking.”

A statement on Teletext Holidays’ website said: “Truly Travel Ltd, trading as Teletext Holidays have had their Travel Trust Association membership closed on 29th October 2021 and are no longer taking new bookings.

“All existing Truly Travel bookings have been re-contracted with TTA Travel, ATOL Licence T7173 and existing customers’ holidays will be fulfilled as planned. For any questions, please see the TTA Travel website, available here https://www.ttatravel.co.uk/ ”

A statement on AlphaRooms’ website said:” Alpha Holidays, trading as Alpharooms.com have had their Travel Trust Association membership closed on 29th October 2021.

“This means that sadly, your existing booking with Alpha Holidays will not be fulfilled. In order to process a refund on your accommodation, please submit the claims form available by clicking here.  https://alphaholidays.traveltrust.co.uk/ ”

Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms broke consumer law over Covid cancellation refunds, High Court finds

Firms trading as Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms flouted the Package Travel Regulations (PTRs) over Covid refunds, according to the High Court.

The court agreed with the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that Truly Travel and Alpha Holidays breached rules which required them to refund customers for package holidays that were cancelled due to the pandemic within 14 days.

The competition watchdog sought a declaration from the High Court to highlight the importance of travel firms respecting consumers’ refund rights.

CMA launches legal action against Teletext Holidays parent

Because Truly Travel and Alpha Holidays have been placed into liquidation, Teletext Holidays or Alpharooms package travel customers with outstanding refunds are encouraged to submit a claim to the Travel Trust Association, which is now responsible for these.

The court decision does not affect this, the CMA said.

The CMA started court action against Truly Holdings and its subsidiaries Truly Travel and Alpha Holidays last year over outstanding refunds owed to customers.

Truly Holdings had previously signed formal commitments, known as undertakings, requiring them to use all reasonable endeavours to pay outstanding refunds to passengers in an agreed schedule, and to ensure that all refunds due for cancelled package holidays going forward were paid within 14 days.

The CMA took the company to court when it found that Truly Holdings was not fully abiding by these undertakings.

The court claim for refunds was paused indefinitely after the firms entered liquidation, but the CMA continued to seek a declaration from the court that these companies broke the law. This has resulted in today’s ruling.

The legal action follows consumer protection law enforcement work by the CMA in the package travel sector to secure hundreds of millions of pounds in refunds for people whose holidays were cancelled due to Covid-19.

CMA chief executive Andrea Coscelli said: “This should be a wake-up call to any business that thinks that it doesn’t need to honour customers’ refund rights.

“Today’s ruling confirms the CMA’s view that Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms broke the law by not providing the refunds customers were due within 14 days for cancelled package holidays.

“While this ruling comes after these firms have been placed in liquidation, we hope the decision will make it easier for people to get their money back for a cancelled holiday in the future.

“Customers of Teletext Holidays and Alpharooms with outstanding refunds should get in touch with the Travel Trust Association.”

Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, said: “Teletext Holidays attempted to shirk its legal responsibilities to refund customers within 14 days for cancelled trips, leaving its exasperated customers out of pocket for years.

“Holidaymakers have been badly let down, but this important court ruling means they should finally be able to claim the money back they are owed.

“Teletext is not the only holiday company to break the law over refunds in recent years. The government must ensure there are better protections for holidaymakers’ money by giving regulators stronger powers to take action against companies that break consumer law – including the ability to impose fines if necessary.”

Not sure I understand the question.

We do have existing threads about alpha rooms, I recall them being known as a subpar agent

Tripadvisor staff removed this post at the original author's request.

The Travel Trust Association are the organisation that covered Alpharooms should it go into administration or collapse.

My booking with Alpharooms was cancelled 2 weeks before travel in November 21 as The TTA closed there membership.I then submitted a claim for my refund of £1500 for my booking ,which the TTA should pay back.

After having my first claim turned down ,as they needed more payment info,i then submitted a second claim with the relevent info only to be told they dont cover accomodation only bookings!!!There website clearly states that all parts of a booking with a travel agaent registered with them is covered..

They claim that Accomodation only bookings arnt covered by there finacial cover plan.

There website clearly states all aspects of travel including accomodation is covered .

The BBC’s Rip Off Britain series covered this a few weeks ago. You might wish to search those episodes out on i-Player.

Thanks ,i will check it out.

What you say may be logical but the TTA are not applying logic and have refused refunds for all Alpha rooms customers with an accommodation only booking , This is clearly at odds with what is stated on their website

but also clearly goes against what they stated in the Daily mirror on 7/1/2022" all Alpha rooms customers with accommodation only bookings have been offered a refund ".

Teletext Holidays and its sister company Alpharooms appear to be on the brink of collapse.

Teletext has stopped taking new bookings and Alpharooms will no longer honour existing trips, according to announcements on both their websites today.

The messages to customers say that Teletext Holidays is no longer taking new bookings, although it will honour existing holidays, while existing bookings made via Alpharooms as of 25 October will not be fulfilled. Alpharooms has asked affected customers to fill out a form online in order to get a refund.

News of the imminent collapse of Truly Holdings, the parent company of both travel brands comes after the Travel Trust Association unexpectedly revoked the memberships of Teletext and Alpharooms on Friday, October 29, on the back of financial concerns, according to Moneysavingexpert.com .

The Travel Trust Association (TTA), a trade body that ensures travel companies abide by industry regulations, told MSE that directors at the two firms have sought to appoint liquidators.

Truly Holdings declined to comment.

Pic of Magaluf beach, Majorca

The move comes after a bruising 18 months that has seen the parent company, Truly Holdings, reprimanded by the UK competitions watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), for failing to fully refund customers for holidays cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the CMA, which was planning to take Truly Holdings to court , the company has paid out £10.8 million in refunds but still owed £1.2 million to customers in mid-October.

The CMA said: "We understand people awaiting refunds may be concerned about this and are seeking clarification from Truly Holdings. We will continue to take all possible action to get people the refunds they are owed."

The news will likely affect thousands of customers, but if you made a booking with Teletext Holidays, your trip will still go ahead as things stand.

The Civil Aviation Authority, the UK's aviation watchdog, said Teletext Holidays no longer holds an ATOL licence, however, the TTA has confirmed it has taken on all Teletext package holidays and these trips will still go ahead.

You can contact the TTA directly with any questions about your booking via [email protected].

The TTA is thought to have contacted all Teletext Holidays customers and any outstanding payments will be collected by the TTA.

If you have a booking with Alpharooms, this will no longer be going ahead. However, you can claim for a refund. The TTA said all customers with an Alpharooms accommodation-booking have been contacted and offered a refund.

To claim your refund, you will need to fill out the refund form and provide a number of details, including proof of payment for both the deposit and the balance. TTA will then review all submitted claims within seven working days and advise of the next steps. The TTA said it anticipates that once the claims are confirmed, refunds will take up to 12 weeks to be processed.

TTA to launch ‘voluntary refund scheme’ after Truly Travel customers complain they’ve been left out of pocket

travel trust association alpharooms

The Travel Trust Association has told customers left out of pocket by the collapse of Telextext and Alpharooms that it will announce a ‘voluntary refund scheme’ next month.

No further details have been revealed, but the scheme is understood to be for Alpharooms accommodation-only customers who might not automatically qualify for refunds from the TTA.

The TTA had provided financial protection to Teletext and Alpharooms customers, operating as a franchisee of the Civil Aviation Authority, but it says not all accommodation-only bookings were covered by the scheme.

Clients who booked accommodation-only have been told they’re not automatically entitled to their money back from the scheme if the funds had already been transferred to the accommodation supplier when the parent company Truly Travel collapsed, and if the supplier has refused to refund.

It told these customers in an email that it has been trying to persuade suppliers to issue refunds, and it has also advised them to submit a charge back or Section 75 request to their bank.

However, TTA said it will set up a voluntary refund scheme for Alpharooms customers who have been unable to get a refund from their debit or credit card issuer.

It has told customers that claims submitted online by 2 March, with proof that a charge back/S75 request has been rejected by their bank, will be considered.

Details of the Voluntary Refund Scheme will then be revealed on 3 March, it said in an email to customers.

The TTA announced the launch of the scheme following multiple complaints to the CAA about TTA’s handling of refunds following the collapse of Truly Travel in December 2021.

Thousands of people were left out of pocket, many of whom had been waiting for refunds for bookings cancelled during the pandemic in 2020.

The CAA confirmed to Travel Gossip that while the ‘vast majority’ of claims have been paid, it is aware that some are still outstanding more than a year after Truly Travel called in the liquidators.

CAA Head of Crisis Management Andy Cohen added: “We understand the frustrations of customers who are waiting to be refunded by The Travel Network Group [TTA’s owner].

“We continue to monitor the situation closely, but the vast majority of claims have already been paid and we are actively working with the Travel Network Group to ensure that all customers with a valid ATOL claim are refunded without delay.”

Customers who have complained directly to the CAA that they are still waiting for refunds have been told by the regulator that their claims have been escalated.

However,  TTA Customer Experience and People Development Director Ionela Dinu-Mihai told Travel Gossip that some claims had been rejected initially because they were accommodation-only and therefore non-ATOL protected.

Ionela said ‘probably 97%’ of Alpha claims were from customers who’d booked accommodation-only.

She said the ‘very few’ people who had booked packages with Alpha had been refunded once their claims were validated.

“The Alpha customers who contacted the CAA are all accommodation-only bookings, and not package bookings,” said Ionela.

“There is no statutory insolvency protection scheme which refunds accommodation-only bookings when a company such as Alpharooms financially fails – such protection only applies to package holiday bookings.”

TTA said some Teletext claims were also disqualified because the customers didn’t travel even though the flight and accommodation were available.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
