I’ve always thought Traveling Vineyard had a fun and unique concept, but also ideal. After all, what’s always served at in-home shopping parties, you guessed it, wine! And who doesn’t love drinking free wine?!

The company started back in 2001 with the goal of making wine tastings less stuffy, and their relaxed vision took off. Today the company has over 5,000 Wine Guides in 39 states!

The Products

Traveling Vineyard has 27 different varieties of award-winning wine in four different categories: red, white, sweet and fizzy, and semi-sweet. Besides wine, they also sell accessories such as chillers, decanters, and wine openers. Wine prices range from $14.99 – $29.99 per bottle, and because it’s a consumable item, people will often reorder their favorites when they run out. Traveling Vineyard wines also have a guest satisfaction rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars.

The Cost to Join Traveling Vineyard

To become a Wine Guide with Traveling Vineyard, you’ll need to purchase a starter kit, which there are three to choose from, Digital Success Kit ($59), The Essentials Success Kit ($99), or The Complete Success Kit ($179).

With each Success Kit, you also get your own personal website free for the first three months (Digital Success Kit is the join month + 1 month free versus 3 months free). Afterward, it’s $15.95 a month. I haven’t had the opportunity to review the personal websites, but it does contain your outward-facing website as well as your back-office, which includes training, videos, and accounting software so that you can track orders and see how much money you’re making.

If you’re uncertain if this opportunity is right for you, or you’re short on start-up funds, they have a program called, Decider Events. With this program, you’ll be able to host a party and use your host benefits towards a Success Kit. It also allows you to see what it’s like to work as a Wine Guide, and if you have others interested in hosting an event, it gives you a jumpstart on your business — which is a win-win in my book!

Compensation Plan

Wine Guides earn 15 – 35 percent in commission based on monthly sales volume. Payments for personal sales are made three times a month, and team sales are distributed at the end of the month via direct deposit. As a Wine Guide, you’ll receive a 20 percent discount on wine, and these sales are combined in your monthly personal volume. On average, Wine Guides sell $455 per event, earning them an average of $80 – $100 per event. There are no monthly sales quotas, minimums, or inventory that you need to keep on hand.

There are five ways in which you can earn money with Traveling Vineyard:

• Conduct Virtual Wine Tastings
• Website and Social Media Sales
• Subscription Sales (Rewined Program)
• Building a Team

With Traveling Vineyard, you can also earn Thrive Rewards for meeting certain milestones, like hosting events, sponsoring new team members, and getting promoted. The badges that you gain can be traded in for coins which allow you to purchase prizes, including:

How is it possible to serve and sell wine without a liquor license? Is there some loophole because it’s being served and sold in people’s homes?

Hi Jane! Great question! Traveling Vineyard hosts sign a Host Responsibility Letter before the tasting (which is a tasting of 1-2 ounce pours). Our Traveling Vineyard Wine Guides takes Host + Guests through a fun and educational wine tasting of 5 wines (the Host is required to pour for his/her guests). Hosts and Guests that are interested in placing a wine order may do so through our app or website – orders go directly to our licensed facility to accept and fulfill the order. The Wine Guide is not actually selling wine at the event, but acting as a marketing agent. We do have a few states (NH and NJ for example) that require our Wine Guides to obtain additional documentation based on specific state specifications. I hope this helps! Unfortunately, they are not open for business in Canada at this time. Given the nature of their business, they have to deal with strict regulations when it comes to alcohol. In fact, they are only open in 42 US states due to these regulations and laws. I’ll let you know if that changes in the future. Thanks for stopping by!

I just don’t see how this can be worthwhile. If it cost you $37.50 just to have a party and your only making 15% that’s a lot of wine to sell just break even.? Not mention the extra $15 a month for the website. If I’m wrong please point it out in layman’ terms!

Hi April, The average Traveling Vineyard show produces $400 – $500 in sales, which would earn you $80 – $100 in commission. So you don’t pay for wine tasting wine you take to the wine tastings? The company pays for it, am I correct or wrong? What if you don’t make the 400-500 at one event? So you have to buy the wine for the wine tastings yourself? Very curious how this works. What if you have 3 parties lined up for one week? Are you able to get wine credit for the third set of wine?

Hi Michelle! Included in our Success Kit are 10 bottles of wine (or two 5 bottle Tasting Sets) to get you started with your first two wine tasting events. The 5 bottle Tasting Sets are what our Wine Guides take with them to conduct a wine tasting. As long as our Wine Guides hold a “qualified event” ($150 in sales volume), Traveling Vineyard issues a $75 Tasting Set credit – the cost of another 5 bottle Tasting Set. So, as long Wine Guides hold qualified events (which our Wine Guides have no problem doing) – our Wine Guides never pay out of pocket for additional Tasting Sets! Millennials love their wine more than any other generation. They account for nearly half of all the wine consumed in the United States each year . That figure does not surprise me at all.  I developed a liking for wine after studying abroad in Italy and now make wine a regular part of my life. I love drinking wine with friends, attending wine tastings, and trying new wines.

That is why when I was approached by Traveling Vineyard to write a sponsored post on their wine guide program, I jumped on the opportunity. Here is my interview with Wine Guide Laura Iosbaker  about her experience working with Traveling Vineyard.

First of all, what is a Wine Guide?

A Wine Guide organizes wine tastings and receives a commission on sales.

I (Laura) work through Traveling Vineyard which is a special direct sales company that lets people earn a flexible income by doing what they love – enjoying great wines with friends. There are more than 5,000 Wine Guides across the country.

Uh-oh, how is this different from the pyramid schemes that are out there?

Two reasons – first, we don’t make money directly on our team through the sign up cost of other wine guides.

Second, it’s wine! You’re not asking people to buy more “stuff” they don’t need such as jewelry or clothes. People like trying new wines and drinking wine with friends.

You don’t have to be pushy at all. The wines sell themselves and people have a great time at the tastings.

Do you have to host the tastings yourself?

No, I actually don’t host most of my tastings. I’m responsible for the experience while at the tasting.

Friends and family gladly host the tastings and I have many repeat hosts. Hosts can earn free and discounted wine for hosting the event.

How did you get started with Traveling Vineyard?

In February 2014, I started looking into direct sales products. I researched saturation rate in the market and compensation plan among other factors and decided on Traveling Vineyard. I now work for Traveling Vineyard as a Wine Guide and teach college classes on the side.

What do you like about being a Traveling Vineyard Wine Guide?

I love the flexibility. I needed to take a break for a few months for personal reasons. I was able to move my schedule around and still take all the time I needed for my family while making enough to cover my bills.

I also like that I don’t have to push to schedule tastings. People seek me out because it’s a fun experience.

How much money can you make being a Wine Guide for Traveling Vineyard?

You can make up to 35% commission on each sale. You can also earn bonuses and incentives such as extra pay, wine, and even all inclusive vacations.

The chart below shows how much money you can make being a wine guide (in thousands).

What is the upfront cost to become a Wine Guide?

You need a tasting kit called the Success Kit to hold your first tasting. It’s $189 plus shipping and includes $150 worth of wine.

The Success Kit includes:

• 2 Tasting Sets of 5 bottles each – enough for your first two events
• Tasting glasses and a carrying box
• 6-bottle wine carrier
• Business paperwork – order forms, start-up guide (orders can also be made via mobile app)
• Marketing materials – brochures and flyers
• Wine accessories
• Sommology Kit – a training program and cheat sheet all in one

Do I have to rebuy the success kit after every couple of events?

After the first two events, you replace the wine for your tasting sets – at $75 per set – but if your event met the standards for a ‘qualified event’ (which is determined by the orders you collect), Traveling Vineyard credits you the cost of your next set.

A successful tasting means a free tasting set.

How many people do you need to host a successful event?

My personal recommendation is to get a minimum of six people. I’ve hosted a maximum of 30 people when I organize couples events.

I have a business Facebook page and send out event invitations via Facebook.

Great information on wine tastings! Pacing yourself and not staying strict to plans are great pieces of advice. My husband and I started doing wine tastings last summer in Napa Valley, CA; we had a great time, and though we had 5-6 wineries on our list to hit in an afternoon, we were so charmed by two of them that we skipped the rest in order to take in the sights, smells, and just enjoy it.

6 of the best active pursuits on Cape Cod and the Islands

From morning hikes along Martha’s Vineyard's towering bluffs to sunset sails on Nantucket Sound, this picturesque pocket of New England is perfect for an active getaway.

By land or by sea, the great outdoors beckons in the seaside paradise of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. This natural New England beauty is incredibly scenic, with a rugged coastline and golden dunes, surrounded by the mesmerising blue-grey expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. From kayaking across the yacht-filled waters of Nantucket Harbor to oceanfront golf on Martha’s Vineyard, here are six of the best activities to enjoy Cape Cod and the Islands.

1. Set sail on Cape Cod

Sailing is an iconic New England pastime, and Cape Cod is one of the best places for people to master their nautical know-how. Visitors needn’t be America’s Cup-ready to set sail here — the coastline is navigable for novices looking to sail on their own or learn from an experienced crew. Falmouth, on the north side of the island, is home to placid waters and programmes designed to enhance the sailing prowess of children and adults alike — from individual lessons by Falmouth Harbor to all-women clinics on Buzzards Bay.

2. Whale watch on Cape Cod

Wildlife lovers should follow the ‘arm’ of Cape Cod’s peninsula north to Provincetown, where the first recreational whale-watching in the US originated on the East Coast. Whales are an integral part of Cape Cod’s history and economy, and seeing one in the wild is magical. Cape Cod was established as a whaling community in the early 17th century, but the ever-present humpback whales were almost extinct in the 1960s during an era of commercial whaling. In 1986, a temporary ban was put in place to allow whale stocks to replenish, which is still in place today. Thankfully, they can be spotted today on sailing cruises to the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, which is also a popular feeding ground for fin and minke whales. Peak season is from May to October, and if you’re lucky, you can also spot whales from the shore at Race Point Beach, the northernmost tip of Cape Cod.

3. Hike on Martha's Vineyard

Wide open spaces await amid sprawling meadows, rolling hills and 124 miles of unspoiled seaside on Martha’s Vineyard . An excellent way of exploring this island is by foot — it’s a wonderland of walking trails, with more than 220 miles of forest tracks, cliffside hikes and seaside paths. Though the island may seem quaint, Martha’s Vineyard is the third-largest island on the East Coast, and 40% of its land is protected, making the island a haven for threatened wildlife.  

Birdwatchers are sure to enjoy a morning walk in Edgartown’s Sheriff’s Meadow Sanctuary or amid the 600-plus acres of dunes and woodlands in Vineyard Haven’s Long Point Wildlife Refuge . The Aquinnah Cliffs also have an excellent trail leading to Gay Head Lighthouse along Moshup Beach, while the 311-ft summit of Peaked Hill in Chilmark, renowned for being a Second World War military lookout, offers beautiful vistas.

4. Play golf on Martha’s Vineyard

Hit the links on Martha’s Vineyard, home to an enticing selection of golf courses available to locals and day-trippers alike — no club membership necessary. Head out to the idyllic island of Chappaquiddick for nine holes at The Royal and Ancient Chappaquiddick Links (otherwise known as the Royal Chappy). Don’t let the name fool you — this establishment is anything but uptight and the shorter course allows visitors to spend the remainder of their afternoon exploring the rustic surroundings. For a more upscale outline, Farm Neck Golf Club in Oak Bluffs is a championship-level course favoured by the Obamas, which has pristine views of the Nantucket Sound. Luckily, the club is only semi-private, so you needn’t have the presidential seal of approval to gain entry.

5. Kayak on Nantucket

Nantucket is the best place to take to the sea and be seen, so downtown Nantucket Harbor is, unsurprisingly, a diverting locale for kayakers. Enjoy the terrific people-watching (a classic Nantucket pastime) as you navigate among the mega-yachts and classic sailboats, and take in the Brand Point Lighthouse. Calmer tides await at Sesachacha Pond near Quidnet Beach, where the brackish, shallow water is a paddlers’ paradise — stand-up paddleboarding included. A freshwater oasis awaits kayakers and birders alike at the 132-acre Long Pond in the wetlands of the island’s west side.

6. Cycle on Nantucket

Only 14 miles long and home to more than 35 miles of bike paths, Nantucket is the perfect spot for biking. It’s not very hilly and the ocean breeze renders the conditions ideal. Plus, it’s the best way to beat the high-season traffic that clogs the roads every July and August — rendering the one-mile Town Lane path downtown is especially valuable. Sconset Path is a scenic, six-mile journey to the island’s eastern end, passing cranberry bogs and hydrangea-adorned Cape Cod houses. Madaket Road Path, on the island's western side, has one of the longer bike trails on Nantucket and it is also one of the most rewarding, especially when you arrive at the marvellously secluded Madaket Beach.

9 Incredible Vineyards in the U.S.

Experience the U.S. one sip at a time.

The wine-drinking experience is something we tend to associate primarily with our senses of taste and smell. But being immersed in the source is the ultimate reminder that there's so much more to feel and absorb from a wine beyond its salient qualities, and that what we take in with our eyes can sometimes be equally (if not more) impactful. From an impossibly charming vineyard farmhouse centered around community visibility and empowerment in Oregon's Willamette Valley to a Mexican winemaking family's distinctive interpretation of New York terroir, these are the country's most breathtaking places to drink wine amid the vines.

Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards, Verde Valley, AZ

Regardless of your personal music tastes, there's something to worship about "Reverend" Maynard James Keenan's boutique Arizona wines . As the frontman of legendary alt-metal band TOOL and a winemaker since the mid-2000s, Keenan's experiential vinous empire channels the same cerebral, multisensory experience as his music, thanks in large part to business partner and lab manager Jennifer Lei Li Keenan, who also happens to be his wife. Together, the Keenan family owns Caduceus Cellars, Merkin Vineyards, and several other concepts in and around Arizona's Verde Valley area — while the tasting rooms themselves are located in town centers, you can book a private, customized tour with Sip Sedona for an intimate look at the striking desert vineyards that's as easy on the eyes as it is on the palate.

Kitá Wines, Santa Ynez Valley, CA

Trailblazing winemaker and entrepreneur Tara Gomez is a force, to say the least. Gomez, who founded Kitá Wines in California's Santa Ynez Valley in 2010, is leading the way for female-identifying wine professionals in both the Indigenous and LGBTQ spaces (especially where the two intersect). Visit Kitá for a tasting and a tour of the sunny Camp 4 Vineyards, which is owned by the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians (the nation to which Gomez belongs), and take in the views of the valley's picturesque rolling hills while supporting tribal tourism development and sipping a variety of winery favorites.

RGNY, North Fork, NY

For those on the East Coast, rest assured that cross-country travel is not a requisite for full immersion in the lounging-around-gorgeous-vineyards lifestyle. New York State is home to plenty of beautiful wineries and vineyards, but there's something about RGNY on the North Fork of Long Island that sets the property apart from the rest. Owned by the Rivero González family of winemakers, who planted their first vines in southern Mexico back in 1998, this sustainable winery presents itself through a design-forward lens, and both the tasting room and surrounding vineyard blocks make for the perfect backdrop to any casual visit, event, or curated experience .

Frichette Winery, Benton City, WA

Located in the heart of Washington state's Red Mountain winemaking region, Frichette Winery is a beautifully warm and welcoming place to kick back and sip a big, bold red either inside the tasting room, on the patio overlooking the vineyards and nearby mountains, or in an Adirondack chair around the fire pit, depending on your vibe. Wife-and-husband team Shae and Greg Frichette offer daily visiting hours and a variety of flights and experiences (not to mention a mean cheese plate), and the winery's dedication to supporting local organizations and community members makes the scenery at Frichette Winery that much sweeter.

Darioush, Napa Valley, CA

While it's tough to narrow down the best wineries in Napa, Darioush is certainly among the most uniquely beautiful. Described by founding couple Shahpar and Darioush Khaledi as being "both a destination and a journey," this elegant winery is steeped in the family's Persian heritage and is transportive in a way that words fail to describe. A visit to Darioush is a feeling of being embraced by centuries of culture, history, and tradition in a hospitality experience that's simply stunning inside and out. Book a walking winery tour or a private table in the gardens to soak in the surroundings while you sip a glass of the house's iconic Darius II red blend between bites of mezze.

Remy Wines, Willamette Valley, Oregon

Remy Drabkin, founder of Remy Wines in Oregon's Willamette Valley, wears many hats. In addition to making wine and owning multiple businesses in McMinnville, Drabkin not only currently serves as president of the local city council, chair of the McMinnville Affordable Housing Commission, and a director on the Oregon Wine Board's Education Committee as appointed by the state's governor, but she's also the brains behind Wine Country Pride. Needless to say, Drabkin's dedication to serving her community is admirable, and it's businesses and people like this that we can all feel good about supporting. It just so happens that the Remy Wines Dundee Hills family farmhouse — an inclusive, peaceful place for wine lovers from all walks of life — is full of visual charm, to boot.

Scribe Winery, Sonoma, CA

Of all of the wineries I've visited throughout my near-decade of drinks writing, Scribe has to be the coolest, most impeccably-designed and highly-curated expression of California cool I've ever come across. Situated on a sprawling farm dotted with lush palms amongst the seemingly endless rows of vines, Scribe is anything but your everyday winery experience — in fact, it's a minimalist oenophile's dreamscape with thoughtful nooks destined for the 'gram at every turn. Here's the catch: you have to be a member of the Scribe Viticultural Society to gain access to the property, but there's no cost to join, and the long list of perks is more than worth the commitment to two consecutive seasonal allocation shipments. As for the wines themselves, well, let's just say the aesthetic appeal is merely an added bonus.

Bluemont Vineyard, Bluemont, VA

If you've ever dreamt of vacationing in a mountainside vineyard, Bluemont — one of Virginia's top wineries — is the place to go. At Bluemont Vineyard, you can book a stay in one of the property's ultra-charming guest cottages, some of which are dog-friendly, and when you're not busy tasting, there are plenty of other fun things to see and do in town . Or, if you're just passing through, either reserve a tasting in the Harvest Room or simply walk in for a seat on the patio overlooking the mountainside. Or, check out the programming for Bluemont's separate tasting room in the winery's mountain lodge for additional options like this season's Champagne tasting. This area is beautiful year-round, but we suggest aiming for a visit around the holidays to see the 10,000 surrounding vines illuminated by sparkling white lights each night.

Red Tail Ridge, Penn Yan, NY

As the only LEED Gold-certified winery in the state of New York, Red Tail Ridge on Seneca Lake is headed up by winemaker Nancy Irelan, a sustainably minded visionary known for her scientific background and approach to the craft. Irelan favors Old World grape varieties like riesling, which is known to thrive in this region, along with a few lesser-known European grapes not often grown in New York (think: teroldego and lagrein). The winery itself is a sight to behold from both a design and engineering standpoint — Irelan and co-owner Mike Schnelle commissioned the highly sustainable structure from a local architectural firm, and the grounds that surround it are some of the most beautiful in the area no matter the season.

GV Loyalty Club Dining & Shopping Rewards

Become a member and be rewarded! GV Loyalty Club members earn one point for each dollar spent on food or merchandise at The Bistro, The Crush House, The Still House, The Piazza, The Marketplace or The Twisted Olive (located in Green, OH). How to Enroll

• Our Loyalty Website updated to a new URL. When you are onsite we may provide a sticker for the back of your card with the new URL for you to easily remember.

Can I get credit for a visit where I forgot my card? YES! At the time of purchase, you may provide the phone number registered to the card and earn points without having your card with you.
