Frequently Asked Questions

What should i do if my child is new to volleyball or new to travel clubs  .

If your child is new to the sport, Next Revolution offers a Developmental Program for players ages 12 and Under to learn fundamental volleyball skills.  If you are new to travel volleyball, speak to a board member, coach, or parents that have experience with travel volleyball.

Our travel teams have two options based on player skill level; Black (Open) Royal (Club) and usually have a season that runs from December through April with multiple practices per week. Our Black teams will also participate in either USAV or AAU Nationals in June and will take a small break until mid May after their final tournaments.

Participating in travel volleyball is a commitment which will mean attending tournaments on the weekends (a combination of single day and multi-day tournaments).  Single day tournaments are typically an all day event depending on format, while multi-day tournaments usually require going out of town beginning Friday evening through either Sunday or Monday (depending if the tournament is a 2 or 3 day tournament). Some tournaments that are three days can also begin on Saturday and end on Mondays.

Travel costs associated with out of town tournaments are NOT included in projected team fees. This includes travel, lodging and food.

How do I know which age group my child should play in?

The tryouts page includes a definition of player age groups based on date of birth.

Players are allowed to select one age group higher than they would be based on their birth date ie a player who should play 13's for their season could choose to tryout for 14's if they believe their skill level is high enough.

In a rare occasion if the club feels a player is able to play higher than one age group then the board would contact their parent/guardian to discuss the options.

When are tryouts usually held?

Tryouts are generally held in the month of September and October with the Open and Club/Non Travel levels separated.

How often do teams practice?

Teams will hold scheduled practices at a minimum two times per week. Coaches may decide to supplement their schedule with an additional practice on occasion or may decide to begin their season holding three practices a week throughout the first month of the season. Practice times are generally either 5:30-7:00 or 7:00-9:00.

How is a team's schedule determined?

Next Revolution's directors select common schedules for our Open, Club, Amethyst and Developmental level teams. Some Open teams may have select tournaments based on the team's talent level and players who are looking to play at the collegiate level and need recruiting opportunities.

How many players are on a team?

The number of players on a team can vary however generally have between 10-12 players.  A total cost is calculated for each team depending on numerous factors such as tournament schedule/entry cost, length of season, player gear package, number of coaches, travel expenses for coaches, etc.

Once the total team cost is determined, it is divided equally by the number of players on that team.  Deposits and payments are non-refundable, as accepting a position on a team is a commitment to share in the total cost of that team for the full season.  Final costs are calculated as soon as all rosters are complete and the tournament schedule has been determined. WHO WILL TRAIN MY PLAYER?

Next Revolution Volleyball is home to a knowledgeable, experienced and successful staff of coaches with a wide variety of volleyball backgrounds. Our club includes coaches who have played at the Division I, II and III levels and coaches who have experience coaching at the middle school, JV, Varsity and college levels. Several of our coaches have also had an opportunity to participate in postseason play at National level tournaments like AAU Nationals in Orlando Florida. Our coaches attend annual coaching conventions, workshops and clinics to continue to stay current in their knowledge of the sport. We encourage you to read more about each of our coaches on their individual team pages.

Next Revolution Volleyball requires coaches to be background checked as well as IMPACT and Safesport certified in accordance with USA Volleyball and Old Dominion Region standards. Coaches are also certified through the CDC "Heads Up Concussion" concussion training annually.

How far away are tournaments?

Single day tournaments attended by Next Revolution teams are generally within 90 minutes of Roanoke, though some teams may travel to locations such as Richmond.

Other tournaments can be as far away as Florida for our Open teams or as close as Virginia Beach. Each team's schedule is communicated very early to help with planning for each family.

What do USAV, AAU and ODR mean?

USAV (USA Volleyball) is the primary governing body of volleyball in the country. Many tournaments attended by Next Revolution teams are sanctioned by USAV.

The ODR (Old Dominion Region) is the specific region within USAV that Next Revolution is a part of based on our geographic location. All players must register with USAV/ODR and AAU while completing their required online modules in order to participate in the travel season.

All NRV coaches (age 18 and older) are required to undergo a background check through USA Volleyball as well as complete training through SafeSport .

AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) is another sports organization that provides their own sanctioned tournaments, coaching requirements, and coverage which our teams also participate in.

JVA (Junior Volleyball Association) much like AAU provides their own sanctioned tournaments, coaching requirements, and coverage which our teams also participate in.

If I am selected for a team what happens?

Next Revolution requires that all players submit an initial deposit in order to secure their roster spot. This deposit is non-refundable and a part of each player's contract as this is a commitment being made to your team.

Anyone who needs assistance may contact us at [email protected] to discuss alternate payment schedules, etc. prior to further installments being due .  We are happy to work with families that need alternate arrangements made; we just ask that you reach out to us.

Are there any fundraising options?

Next Revolution works to provide several fundraisers throughout the season. The local Shamrock Festival in March also provides players with a fundraiser through selling advertising to local businesses.  Their sponsorship form is available on our Forms/Policies page.

USA Volleyball National Rankings

USA Volleyball’s Indoor National Ranking System is the official ranking system for USA Volleyball and is based on results from USA Volleyball-sanctioned events. Uses for the ranking system include:

• Help tournament directors seed events; and • Easily see and track where you stand against USA Volleyball teams across the country.

This is Phase 1 for the USA Volleyball National Ranking System. As with any new system, we will go through some inevitable tweaks based on feedback that we receive and observe. A goal for future uses of the ranking system is a tool that could include selecting at-large teams for USA Volleyball national championship events.

The USA Volleyball National Ranking System uses a multitude of algorithms to objectively rank teams. Results from USA Volleyball-sanctioned events are uploaded from various event management systems and tournament directors running USA Volleyball-sanctioned events. For results to be included, the USA Volleyball team code is required.

National Ranking System FAQ

Our ranking system uses an aggregation of several statistically robust methods to calculate ratings for each team based on match results from USA Volleyball-sanctioned events.

Each rating method relies only on head-to-head match results and the relative strength of teams competing against each other. By tracking results across the entire season and emphasizing quality wins over highly ranked opponents, the methods produce a robust ranking that showcases the top teams across the country.

The ratings are recalculated weekly during the season as new data comes in, so the rankings stay current and reflect how teams are performing right now. You can feel confident that the science and statistics behind the rankings make them a reliable measure of competitiveness.

We understand it can feel discouraging when a notable win does not boost your child’s team’s ranking position.

However, our system does not overreact to any solitary match outcome. A single upset victory alone is unlikely to dramatically alter the rankings. The higher ranked team achieved its position by compiling consistent wins over time. For your child’s team to move up in the rankings, it needs to string together multiple wins against quality opponents week after week, demonstrating the victory wasn’t an isolated occurrence. As the team accumulates consistency, its rating will rise to reflect true skill level. Please be patient and keep celebrating those signature wins when they happen.

Only matches from USA Volleyball-sanctioned events are factored into the national rankings.

Club teams must participate in USA Volleyball tournaments for their results to be incorporated. This ensures the rankings offer a fair nationwide comparison of teams competing under the same system.

Outcomes from non-USA Volleyball sanctioned tournaments, scrimmages or league play do not get calculated into the rankings.

The rankings are recalculated every Tuesday morning during the club season based on results from the preceding weekend.

The updated rankings are then published online by Tuesday afternoon. This weekly process continues throughout the season to keep the rankings current.

If a team does not appear in the published rankings, it simply indicates there was insufficient data for the system to rank it that particular week.

This can occur early in the season before a team has competed in enough matches. As soon as the team plays in a USA Volleyball event, its results will feed into the system and it will begin earning a ranking the following week.

It’s likely that the event results were not uploaded in time for them to be included in the most recent USA Volleyball National Ranking System.

You will need to wait until the next rankings update for the results to be included in your ranking record.

The most effective way to ascend the rankings is to consistently defeat opponents ranked ahead of you. The system rewards victories over highly rated competition.

Avoid scheduling matches against weaker teams, as lopsided wins will not significantly improve the rating.

Instead, focus on competing against the strongest possible opponents, even if it results in some losses against top teams. In time, earning wins against higher caliber teams will boost your rating and ranking.

During the initial weeks, the ranking systems have limited data from which to make calculations. Most teams will have played only once or twice.

So, early rankings can fluctuate more as the systems strongly weigh one or two outcomes. As the season progresses and teams accrue more results, the rankings stabilize and become more precise.

Allow approximately one month for enough match data to properly assess team strengths. Late-season rankings will provide the most accurate assessment of top teams after compiling the full body of work.

All USA Volleyball-sanctioned matches are valued equally in ranking computations, whether from national tournaments, regional tournaments, local tournaments, or other USA Volleyball-sanctioned play. No single competition format is weighted more heavily. The priority is participating in sanctioned events as often as possible against the highest caliber competition available.

At the start of a new season, the ranking systems have a limited number of match results to base calculations on. Most teams will have only played one or two matches in the opening weeks. This small data sample means the rankings can fluctuate more wildly early on as the systems strongly react to one or two results.

As the season progresses and teams play more matches, the rankings become more stable and reliable. By mid-season, the accumulated match data allows the systems to accurately assess team strengths. The more results that are fed into the algorithms, the more precise the rankings become.

Therefore, take the very early-season rankings as a preliminary estimate based on minimal information. Allow approximately one month for teams to accumulate sufficient match data to stabilize the rankings. After that point, the systems have enough information to separate top contenders from lower ranked teams. The late-season rankings will provide the most accurate assessment of the highest performing teams.

Scheduling less competitive matches early in the season is not recommended.

Given the limited data samples, the ranking systems cannot yet properly distinguish between strong and weak opponents. Scheduling such matches may artificially boost your early rating, but hurt you later on. Once you start facing quality opponents, your inflated rating will cause you to lose more points than you would have otherwise.

The optimal approach is to challenge your team from the start. Seek out respectable opponents and do not shy away from potential defeats. This provides the system with an immediate performance benchmark to accurately rate your team against. Competitive early season matches will provide long-term ranking gains.

We do not selectively omit individual results from the ranking calculations, as doing so would undermine the integrity of the system. The ranking algorithms inherently account for anomalous match outcomes over time. As the team earns more quality wins, an isolated negative result will become less impactful on its rating.

Rosters naturally fluctuate, especially early in the season. As long as the core of the team remains intact, roster changes will not invalidate or alter a rating.

The ranking reflects the team’s overall performance, not that of individual players. New players quickly become part of the team’s record used in calculations.

The rankings calculations run from the first USA Volleyball event of the season (usually in January) through the conclusion of the respective USAV Girls and Boys Junior National Championships in late June/early July. This captures the full club season results. Teams earn their final ranking at season’s end.

No, our system does not factor in margin of victory – only win/loss results are used. This is intentional to avoid incentivizing teams to run up the score or coaches compromising playing time once a match is in hand. All that matters is winning, not how much you win by. Close matches, comebacks and upsets all provide great data for the rankings.

The concluding rankings are published immediately after the USA Volleyball Girls and Boys Junior National Championships in late June/early July. This capstone event marks the end of club season and offers teams a final opportunity to impact their ratings. The rankings published afterward reflect teams’ total performance throughout the entirety of the competitive season.

Playing time is not guaranteed on our Elite teams.

National level teams are designed for athletes that are also looking for a competitive environment to compete. They will practice 3 times per week from December-June, play in 10 tournaments (some more regionally based) but still including USAV or AAU Nationals (if a bid is earned, the team will attend USAV Nationals), have the ability to use HUDL & Neurofuel, and will compete in tournaments at a lower level than Elite teams in most events. Each player on National teams will be guaranteed playing time in at least one set per day of each tournament.

Regional teams are designed for players that are looking to play volleyball in a less intense environment. 2023-2034 Travel At a Glance

Payment schedule, tournament schedule, most frequent questions and answers.

Many factors that go into our decisions for pricing for all of our travel teams. Each team operates independently on its own budget to ensure that each family’s costs are going directly to their child.

It is important to first understand what the tuition costs do cover:

  • Court Rental Space & Facility Utilities
  • All practices through the duration of the travel season with each team practicing 2-3 times per week (Regional teams into May & National/Elite Teams through June/July)
  • Coaching Salaries for all practices & tournaments
  • Coaching Travel Expenses & Memberships
  • Tournament Registration Fees (Including USAV/AAU Nationals for Applicable Teams)
  • HUDL (for applicable teams)
  • NeuroFuel (for applicable teams)
  • Administrative Costs – including on site non-coaching staff member for travel practices

What it does not include:

  • Player & Parent Travel to tournaments
  • USAV/AAU Memberships
  • Uniform Package

Why costs are increasing for the 2024 Travel season:

  • Greater efforts to reduce the number of players on each team
  • No canceling of practices the day after tournaments and offering teams opportunities to practice additional times
  • Tournament Registration Fees
  • Travel expenses
  • Paying for an on site non-coaching staff member during practices
  • More diverse travel schedules for regional & national teams to offer players a better and more competitive experience comparable to each team’s skill level

Yes, you may tryout for multiple age groups. You must register for both age groups. A player may only advance to a higher age group (i.e “play up”) if they could hypothetically make the elite team of the higher age group.

We are still finalizing the uniform package for the 2024 travel season. We will have more information at a later date on the uniform package. We intend to allow 2023 players to use their currently jerseys for this upcoming season.

Yes. Full details on the application process are forthcoming. Families will have to apply and demonstrate need by the deadline that is set. All recipients of financial assistance will be required to play on a regional level team.

Please refer to the USAV age definition chart to determine which age group you should register for.

You can register for whichever time slot works best for your schedule for the first weekend! All players will be notified via email which session to attend for the second weekend*

*The absence of a National tryout invitation for the second weekend does NOT mean that you will not be offered a spot on an Elite or National team.

Unrivalled Fischer's Remarkable Gold Medal Run

Unrivalled Fischer's Remarkable Gold Medal Run

About the games, the american boycott.

The Olympics were disrupted by another, even larger boycott, this one led by U.S. President Jimmy Carter, part of a package of actions to protest the December 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Carter engaged in extensive arm-twisting to gain support from other nations.

Some governments, like those of Great Britain and Australia, supported the boycott, but allowed the athletes to decide for themselves whether to go to Moscow. No such freedom of choice was allowed U.S. athletes, as Carter threatened to revoke the passport of any athlete who tried to travel to the USSR. In the end, 67 nations did not participate, with 45 to 50 of these nations likely being absent because of the U.S.-led boycott. Eighty nations did participate—the lowest number since 1956.

Olympic Firsts

Aleksandr Dityatin of Russia earned medals in every men's gymnastics event to become the first athlete to win eight medals at one Olympic Games. Super-heavyweight Teófilo Stevenson of Cuba became the first boxer to win the same division three times, and Gerd Wessig of East Germany became the first male high jumper to break the world record at the Olympic Games.

British Duel

British middle-distance runners Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe faced each other in a memorable confrontation. In the 800m, Ovett won the gold medal ahead of his compatriot. Six days later, a determined Coe redeemed himself in the 1500m. He took the gold, while Ovett managed only a bronze.

Last-Minute Gold

The boycott deprived the inaugural women’s field hockey tournament of all of its entrants except the hosts, USSR. Zimbabwe responded to a late invitation, selecting members less than a week before the Games and rushing to Moscow, then surprised everyone by finishing first.

Observers of the medal ceremony for the men’s coxless pairs rowing event might have been excused for rubbing their eyes. Both the gold and silver-medal winning teams were comprised of identical twins. Bernd and Jorg Landvoigt of East Germany took first place, while Yuri and Nikolai Pimenov of Russia finished second.
