How to stack and combine emoji on your iPhone

  • Spice up your messages by piling emojis on top of each other in the Messages app, mixing and matching to craft your own unique visuals.
  • Kick off with a big emoji sticker: just drag an emoji into your message, then layer more on top to amp up the fun.
  • Tweak your emoji masterpiece anytime -- move or remove emojis to get your stack just right.

There are some iPhone features that aren't very well-known, and when you discover them, you might wonder how you ever managed without them. One such feature is the ability to use the space bar on the keyboard to move your cursor back and forth through whatever you're typing.

Another little-known iPhone trick is the ability to stack emoji in the Messages app. Because what's better than sending an emoji? Sending a giant emoji sticker, of course. And what's even better than sending a giant emoji sticker in Messages? A giant emoji sticker with a whole bunch of other emoji stacked on top.

Stacking emoji allows you to create your own unique images, and if a picture is worth a thousand words, a stack of emoji must be worth enough words to write War and Peace. Here's how to stack emoji on an iPhone.

Spring forward with a clean iPhone: Storage and home screen tidying tips

How to send an emoji as a sticker on iphone, just drag it into the message field in apple's messages app.

By default, when you add an emoji to your message in the Messages app on iPhone , it appears in the blue bubble at the same size as the text. If you don't enter any text and just send an emoji, the image is sent on its own without the blue bubble and is slightly larger. However, it's possible to send an emoji as a much larger sticker by dragging it into the message field.

  • Open the chat you want to add the emoji sticker to in the Messages app.
  • Tap the iMessage field at the bottom of the screen to bring up the keyboard.
  • Tap the Emoji button in the keyboard.
  • Find the emoji you want to use and tap and hold it.
  • If it's an emoji with configurable options such as skin color, release your finger, and tap and hold the emoji option that you want to use. Otherwise, keep your finger down.
  • Without lifting your finger, drag the emoji in the message field. You should see a green + (plus) icon appear.
  • Release your finger.
  • After a moment, the emoji will appear as a giant sticker in the message field.
  • Tap the blue arrow to send the message, and your giant emoji sticker will be sent.

How to block someone on iMessage: Stop unwanted callers

How to stack, layer, and combine emoji on iphone, drag and drop to combine emoji in apple's messages app.

Once you've sent your emoji sticker, you can drag other emoji on top of it to create your own unique emoji stack. You can place these emoji directly over your original sticker or to the side to create a line of emoji. There doesn't seem to be a limit to the number of emoji you can pile on top of one another; I got bored after adding twenty, and to be honest, this is too many to be remotely useful anyway.

  • Send your first emoji sticker using the instructions in the section above.
  • Tap the Emoji button on the keyboard again.
  • Tap and hold an emoji you want to add to your original one.
  • If it's an emoji with a choice of options such as skin color, let go and tap and hold the option you want to use.
  • Drag the emoji into the main Messages window and place it on top of the emoji you just sent.
  • When you're happy with its placement, let go of the screen , and the emoji will be added on top of or alongside your original sticker.
  • The person you sent the original emoji to will now see the emoji stack you've created in place of the original message.
  • Repeat the process with as many emojis as you wish.

The method works with all types of stickers in the Messages app. So, for example, you can stack emoji on top of a sticker, or stack stickers on top of emoji. You can even combine emoji and memoji . You're really only limited by your imagination. Just go easy on the poop emoji .

How to hide iPhone messages without deleting them

How to edit emoji stacks on iphone, reposition or delete combined emoji in apple's messages app.

It's all too easy to get carried away with making your stack of emojis and create something that becomes a bit of a monstrosity. The good news is that it's fairly simple to reposition any emoji you've added or delete some of them if you wish. You can delete all the emojis except for the first one that you posted.

  • To reposition an emoji in your stack, tap and hold it.
  • The emoji should enlarge slightly, indicating that you've got hold of it.
  • Drag your finger around to move the emoji to where you want it.
  • Release your finger, and the emoji will be repositioned.
  • To delete an emoji, tap and hold part of the original emoji that's at the bottom of the stack.
  • In the menu that appears, tap Sticker Details.
  • Swipe left on the sticker that you want to delete.
  • Tap the Trash symbol.
  • Repeat for any other emojis that you want to remove.
  • Tap Done, and the emojis are removed from your message.

33 secret WhatsApp tips and tricks you might not know

Q: how to stack emoji in whatsapp.

It is possible to do a similar thing in WhatsApp, although it's not quite as clean as in Messages. Your first emoji becomes a photo with a white background, but you can then add other emoji as WhatsApp stickers on top of it.

  • Open a WhatsApp chat and tap in the message field.
  • Tap the Emoji icon in the keyboard.
  • Select the emoji you want to use as your base image, and drag it directly into the main chat window, rather than the message field.
  • The emoji will open as a photo.
  • Tap the Stickers icon at the top of the screen.
  • Tap the Emoji tab at the top of the screen.
  • Select an emoji and it will be stacked on top of the photo.

Q: Can you stack emoji in other messaging apps on iPhone?

Emoji stacking works in Messages, and kind of works in WhatsApp but it doesn't work on other third-party messaging apps. In Telegram , you can drag emoji into messages to add them as stickers, but you can't stack them. In Signal , it's not possible to stack emoji, either. Using Messages is by far the best way to send stacks of emoji.

‘A family used to live here’: The Spanish sticker rebellion battling tourist lets

Tired of overtourism pushing up rental prices, Málaga locals have found a novel way to vent their anger

Incensed after finding out his rental home of 10 years was about to become a tourist apartment, Dani Romero took to social media. What followed swiftly snowballed into a movement, as residents in Málaga began plastering stickers – reading “A family used to live here” or “Go home” – outside tourist lets across the southern Spanish city.

“I didn’t mean to arm a revolution,” said Romero. “I’m just looking for a house to live in.”

At the core of what one Spanish broadcaster called “the sticker rebellion” is not a rejection of tourism, said Romero. Instead, as city residents grapple with a record number of tourists, it’s a cri de coeur for a more balanced approach that could allow for a better coexistence between residents and tourists.

A set of stickers posted on Facebook on 23 February by Daniel Romero

It’s a debate playing out across Europe, as cities from Athens to Amsterdam wrestle with how best to tackle overtourism.

In Málaga, Romero did all he could to negotiate with his landlord, offering to pony up more rent for the three-bedroom flat he lived in on the outskirts of the city centre. His landlord’s refusal, however, cast Romero into a desperate search amid the slim pickings of a real estate market where tourist lets have for years outstripped the number of residents in the city centre.

“I’ve looked at houses that don’t have windows, another that wanted a €40,000 (£34,192) deposit,” he said. “On Friday, one asked me for a €200 deposit just to visit the apartment.”

Fuelled by frustration, he took to the social media page of the bar he owns, posting his own take on the blue AT – Apartamento Turístico or Tourist Apartment – signs that advertise tourist lets in the city. “ATtack against the citizens of the city,” he said, as he invited others to come up with their own rebrand of these short-term rentals.

'Go back home' anti-tourism stickers appear on holiday rental flats in Malaga https://t.co/4XXs7k93p6 — SUR in English (@SUR_English) March 14, 2024

Answers soon rolled in, all of them cleverly playing off the AT sign. “This used to be my home,” reads the translation of one response. Others were more blunt: “Go to your fucking home.”

The campaign soon took on a life of its own, as residents began printing out the responses and sticking them on to the AT signs across the city.

“To me it seems a very peaceful way of protesting,” said Romero. “There’s no organisation or political party behind this. It’s neighbours who are fed up because this is an issue that affects absolutely all of us.”

A recent survey of residents in Málaga found that access to housing ranked as their principal concern, with 60% of those polled describing rental prices as “very expensive”.

People enjoy views over Malaga city from a viewpoint towards Gibralfaro castle.

While about 80% of those surveyed described the impact of tourism as “very positive” or “positive,” the most recent data available showed that in 2021, the number of foreign nationals moving to the city rose by 2,600 while the population of Spanish nationals dropped by nearly 1,000.

As the number of tourist apartments swelled, the supply of rentals for locals shrank, pricing out groups such as retirees, some who had been forced to move into shared accommodation, and young people, said Romero. “I’m 48 years old, have a high income, money saved up and I can’t find a house. What’s the situation like for people who are 25 years old?”

Those lucky enough to own their home were not immune either, he said, as the influx of tourists had steadily replaced fruit shops and fishmongers with souvenir stands and luggage storage. “I don’t have anything against tourism. Tourists visit my bar and I’ve been a tourist,” said Romero. “But we have to regulate tourism – me and half the city can’t live like this.”

The city of Málaga, which recently rejected legislation that would have seen the municipal rental market classified as “under pressure” allowing officials to put in place rent caps in certain cases, did not reply to a request for comment.

As news spreads of Málaga’s sticker rebellion, messages poured in for Romero from across the country. From San Sebastián to Valencia and Madrid and Barcelona, residents got in touch to express interest in printing out their own stickers.

Others had weighed in with opinions. “Some people have been really supportive. Others think this is all silly,” he said. “But at the end of the day, all I’m doing – I repeat – is protesting because I don’t have a home.”

Whatsapp's all-new search bar makes another appearance.

But it needs some polish

  • A recent WhatsApp beta version introduced a new search bar in the Chats tab for easier message searching.
  • This search bar is now appearing more widely to beta testers, although it has a design issue that needs to be ironed out.
  • Separately, a new "Move to top" button has appeared for stickers in WhatsApp beta 2.24.7.26 for quicker access to frequently used stickers.

WhatsApp is among the most popular messaging apps in the world right now, with developers constantly rolling out new and upcoming features through the beta channel. We touched on one such feature a couple of weeks ago when the app got a search bar for the Chats tab, helping users search for a specific message from a long list of conversations. While the new search bar was added with WhatsApp beta version 2.24.7.1, it hasn't yet made its wider appearance for all users. But that's changing now, with one of our devices showing a prominent search bar in the Chats tab.

We managed to spot this under-development search bar in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.6.77, which first debuted in early March. This makes it clear that the search bar is being tested across multiple app versions, indicating that it's here to stay.

An early version of the search bar ( left ); The newly spotted search bar in WhatsApp beta ( right )

A side-by-side comparison with the search bar that first appeared in version 2.24.7.1 of WhatsApp beta reveals that the new implementation still needs some work. The fact that a portion of the search bar is absorbed by the dark green header tells us that it's not fully optimized just yet.

Meanwhile, my Android smartphone on WhatsApp beta v2.24.8.2 still doesn't have the search bar in any form, so to say it's a slow rollout would be an understatement. But since we've already seen it appear on a couple of occasions already, we can safely say that it is going to be a big part of WhatsApp in the future.

WhatsApp will soon put your favorite stickers front and center

In a separate development, Android app sleuth AssembleDebug has revealed that version 2.24.7.26 of WhatsApp beta contains a " Move to top " button, as shown above. This is designed to put your favorite or frequently used stickers at the top of the list, thus saving the trouble of manually finding them from an exhaustive list. It's a relatively minor feature but one that will benefit users who routinely send stickers to their WhatsApp contacts.

Things To Do

Author

You’re more likely than ever to fly somewhere this summer, and when you do, you may find some surprises. As usual, for passengers the bad surprises often outnumber the favorable, but either way, they’re coming at you.

Overall airfares are holding firm this summer. Airlines are better than ever at tweaking fares to meet changes in demand, so you’ll see some great flash sale deals where they think demand needs a boost and some real sticker shock at popular times for popular places.

One big change that could ultimately make things a bit easier is that both airlines and security agencies are serious about using facial recognition to replace pieces of paper, app images, and physical screening. The confidence is high enough that facial recognition could actually be all you need to get through an airport and get on a plane. It’s in use in only a few places so far, but you might well encounter it this year and for sure will encounter it in following years. It could make the process easier – let’s hope it works out that way.

Everybody involved is expecting a record year for European travel. Among the low-fare options, Norwegian Atlantic remains a standout with its nonstops in 787s. The latest addition is Las Vegas-London, which adds to its impressive list of US gateways: Los Angeles, Miami, New York/JFK, Orlando, and Washington. French Bee continues its nonstops to Paris/Orly from Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and San Francisco. But beware: It flies some of the narrowest, tightest seats anywhere in the air. Meanwhile, the two lines based in Iceland – old timer Icelandic plus newcomer Play – continue to serve a bunch of transatlantic routes with one-stop connections at Reykjavik. As I’ve said before, these look best when you take advantage of an Iceland stopover – otherwise, you can usually get as good a deal on somebody’s nonstop.

Here at home, Frontier is tackling the challenge of “main cabin” misery by offering what the blogosphere calls “European-style business class.” That means ordinary economy seating but with the middle seat blocked off. In my view, Spirit’s “big front seat” is a better option – a few genuine first-class seats at the front. Pricing will vary depending on demand, but the idea is good.

Recent start-up Avelo seems to have struck gold at New Haven airport, with flights to an expanding bunch of cities mainly in the South. Its initial Los Angeles/Burbank base is expanding, too, but its big new winners are Sonoma, California, and Wilmington, Delaware.

Unfortunately, Avelo is guilty of an ongoing trend of deceptive airport names. It didn’t start the trend; we’ve had Chicago/Rockford, New York/Stewart, Boston/Manchester, and Frankfurt/Hahn for years now. Avelo has added Portland/Salem, Oregon, and Philadelphia/Wilmington. The good folk of Oakland are also thinking about renaming their airport as “San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport.”

In cases where an airport enjoys good ground transportation, the result is harmless and even beneficial: Getting to Manhattan from Newark isn’t much more of a problem than getting there from JFK, and if you live in North Bay, Sonoma beats San Francisco International by a wide margin. But some renames put a hapless arrival a long way from the major city and no easy way to get there. If you’re dumped in Rockford, you have a tough time getting into Chicago; ditto Manchester to Boston, Salem to Portland, and Stewart to Manhattan.

All is not well with other low-fare and niche lines. Newcomer Breeze is struggling to find the right way to use its extremely capable A220 planes. Although not a true low-fare line, JetBlue is also in big trouble. Carl Icahn just bought into the line, and Icahn’s record with TWA leads observers to think an Icahn investment means the vultures are circling.

You can’t spend more than a few seconds in airline-land without encountering some learned treatise or other on Boeing. The focus is understandable: safety, which beats even low fares and convenience. As a traveler, if you’re worried, you can often avoid Boeing planes. But the company needs a major reboot, which travelers really can’t provide.

Whenever I’m in Santiago de Compostela, in the northwest corner of Spain, I have a three-part agenda: See pilgrims reach their goal in front of the cathedral, explore the market, and buy some barnacles in the seafood section – then have them cooked for me, on the spot, in a café. I’m an Economist. Don’t Worry. Be Happy.

An illustration of a simply drawn punch card, with USD written along one margin, a dollar sign and an “I” with many zeros following. Certain zeros have been colored red, creating a smiley face.

By Justin Wolfers

Mr. Wolfers is a professor of economics and public policy at the University of Michigan and a host of the “Think Like an Economist” podcast.

I, too, know that flash of resentment when grocery store prices feel like they don’t make sense. I hate the fact that a small treat now feels less like an earned indulgence and more like financial folly. And I’m concerned about my kids now that house prices look like telephone numbers.

But I breathe through it. And I remind myself of the useful perspective that my training as an economist should bring. Sometimes it helps, so I want to share it with you.

Simple economic logic suggests that neither your well-being nor mine depends on the absolute magnitude of the numbers on a price sticker.

To see this, imagine falling asleep and waking up years later to discover that every price tag has an extra zero on it. A gumball costs $2.50 instead of a quarter; the dollar store is the $10 store; and a coffee is $50. The 10-dollar bill in your wallet is now $100; and your bank statement has transformed $800 of savings into $8,000.

Importantly, the price that matters most to you — your hourly pay rate — is also 10 times as high.

What has actually changed in this new world of inflated price tags? The world has a lot more zeros in it, but nothing has really changed.

That’s because the currency that really matters is how many hours you have to work to afford your groceries, a small treat, or a home, and none of these real trade-offs have changed.

This fairy tale — with some poetic license — is roughly the story of our recent inflation. The pandemic-fueled inflationary impulse didn’t add an extra zero to every price tag, but it did something similar.

The same inflationary forces that pushed these prices higher have also pushed wages to be 22 percent higher than on the eve of the pandemic. Official statistics show that the stuff that a typical American buys now costs 20 percent more over the same period. Some prices rose a little more, some a little less, but they all roughly rose in parallel.

It follows that the typical worker can now afford two percent more stuff. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but it’s a faster rate of improvement than the average rate of real wage growth over the past few decades .

Of course, these are population averages, and they may not reflect your reality. Some folks really are struggling. But in my experience, many folks feel that they’re falling behind, even when a careful analysis of the numbers suggests they’re not.

That’s because real people — and yes, even professional economists — tend to process the parallel rise of prices and wages in quite different ways. In brief, researchers have found that we tend to internalize the gains due to inflation and externalize the losses. These different processes yield different emotional responses.

Let’s start with higher prices. Sticker shock hurts. Even as someone who closely studies the inflation statistics, I’m still often surprised by higher prices. They feel unfair. They undermine my spending power, and my sense of control and order.

But in reality, higher prices are only the first act of the inflationary play. It’s a play that economists have seen before. In episode after episode, surges in prices have led to — or been preceded by — a proportional surge in wages.

Even though wages tend to rise hand-in-hand with prices, we tell ourselves a different story, in which the wage rises we get have nothing to do with price rises that cause them.

I know that when I ripped open my annual review letter and learned that I had gotten a larger raise than normal, it felt good. For a moment, I believed that my boss had really seen me and finally valued my contribution.

But then my economist brain took over, and slowly it sunk in that my raise wasn’t a reward for hard work, but rather a cost-of-living adjustment.

Internalizing the gain and externalizing the cost of inflation protects you from this deflating realization. But it also distorts your sense of reality.

The reason so many Americans feel that inflation is stealing their purchasing power is that they give themselves unearned credit for the offsetting wage rises that actually restore it.

Those who remember the Great Inflation of the ’60s, ’70s and early ’80s have lived through many cycles of prices rising and wages following. They understand the deal: Inflation makes life more difficult for a bit, but you’re only ever one cost-of-living adjustment away from catching up.

But younger folks — anyone under 60 — had never experienced sustained inflation rates greater than 5 percent in their adult lives. And I think this explains why they’re so angry about today’s inflation.

They haven’t seen this play before, and so they don’t know that when Act I involves higher prices, Act II usually sees wages rising to catch up. If you didn’t know there was an Act II coming, you might leave the theater at intermission, thinking you just saw a show about big corporations exploiting a pandemic to take your slice of the economic pie.

By this telling, decades of low inflation have left several generations ill equipped to deal with its return.

While older Americans understood that the pain of inflation is transitory, younger folks aren’t so sure. Inflation is a lot scarier when you fear that today’s price rises will permanently undermine your ability to make ends meet.

Perhaps this explains why the recent moderate burst of inflation has created seemingly more anxiety than previous inflationary episodes.

More generally, being an economist makes me an optimist. Social media is awash with (false) claims that we’re in a “ silent depression ,” and those who want to make American great again are certain it was once so much better.

But in reality, our economy this year is larger, more productive and will yield higher average incomes than in any prior year on record in American history. And because the United States is the world’s richest major economy, we can now say that we are almost certainly part of the richest large society in its richest year in the history of humanity.

The income of the average American will double approximately every 39 years. And so when my kids are my age, average income will be roughly double what it is today. Far from being fearful for my kids, I’m envious of the extraordinary riches their generation will enjoy.

Psychologists describe anxiety disorders as occurring when the panic you feel is out of proportion to the danger you face. By this definition, we’re in the midst of a macroeconomic anxiety attack.

And so the advice I give as an economist mirrors that I would give were I your therapist: Breathe through that anxiety, and remember that this, too, shall pass.
