Navigating a city by bicycle offers a different experience than driving or walking through it. The refreshing pace enables cycling enthusiasts and recreational bike riders alike to fully absorb their surroundings.
Certainly, applying pedal power still requires observing the rules of the road, but riding along a path or through streets and avenues allows riders to take in sights, sounds and even smells in ways that are muted when whizzing past in a vehicle.
Don’t own a bike? The RideKC Bike program through BikeWalkKC has electric-assist and pedal-powered bikes available to rent throughout the city. Simply register via the app for walk-up, day pass, or longer-term memberships. The program also offers service at several Johnson County parks and Lenexa as well.
BikeWalkKC’s Tour de Bier KC also runs through the month of September. The event is a self-guided tour of Kansas City’s brewing past and present in historic neighborhoods. Whether you rent a bike or use your own, it’s easy to explore several areas of the city for exercise, food, drink and sightseeing.
Downtown North Kansas City consists of many blocks worthy of bike-riding jaunts. Cyclists in downtown Kansas City can cross the Missouri River via the Heart of America Bridge to easily enter NKC.
Once there, you can cruise to Velo Garage and Tap House , which combines a bike shop and craft beer taproom under one roof. Swing by The Little Store and Cafe — the cutest place in Northtown — for a quick bite to eat. And FM Music Vintage Sounds is an aural oasis for browsing music and movies.
Iron District is an entire dining and retail destination unto itself, replete with fun spots like Kind Food, Thaiger’s Far East comfort food, Tiki Huna’s cocktails, Bombshell Boutique, 3&Me women’s boutique and more. Take a break to play Jenga, cornhole or dominos before venturing further.
Chicken N Pickle is a fun stop to play pickleball and yard games, grab a bite to eat and rehydrate. Of course, NKC is home to Cinder Block Brewery , The Big Rip Brewing Company , Callsign Brewing and kombucha at The Brewkery . If you have time, catch a film and bite to eat at Screenland Armour . And if vino is more to your taste, pop over to Sail Away Wine , a nearby wine bar.
North Kansas City’s sixth annual Fall Pint Path on Saturday, Sept. 25, is a perfect opportunity to explore these local businesses and many others.
Trolley Trail By Bike
The six-mile Harry Wiggins Trolley Track Trail extends from the Country Club Plaza south through the Brookside and Waldo neighborhoods. Paved with asphalt and crushed stone surfaces, the trail is shared with walkers and joggers and runs along the former Country Club route of Kansas City’s last streetcar, which ceased service more than 60 years ago.
Now cyclists can peep at the city’s famed fountains in and near the Plaza before cruising southbound. Replenish your strength with a pastry from Cafe Europa , browse Underdog Wine Company’s selections, pick up a fresh bouquet at Crestwood Flowers , and meander into other Crestwood shops and restaurants.
Further south, Brookside is packed with charming shops. A Store Named STUFF c ontains work from artists and makers to explore for gift shopping or sprucing up your abode. Geek out at Brookside Toy and Science , a beloved toy store. Inhale deeply and pick up scented votives at The Corner Candleshop .
Need food and drink? Treat yourself to Topsy’s Popcorn , a Kansas City tradition for more than 60 years. The Brookside Farmers Market is a great place to pick up locally and sustainably grown produce every Saturday. Get your caffeine fix at The Roasterie Cafe , nosh on sushi at Sayachi or indulge in Foo’s Fabulous Frozen Custard .
A bit further south, Waldo is home to Kansas City Bier Co.’s Bierhalle and Biergarten right off the trail. The 29th Annual Waldo Fall Festival on Saturday, Sept. 18, is yet another reason to hit the trail and partake in a seasonal tradition. Waldo Pizza and Betty Rae’s Ice Cream are some of the many places in Waldo t o eat, drink and replenish your strength as you bike across the metro.
Troost Boost
Small business development along Troost Avenue is slowly revitalizing this section of the urban core. Explorers can start their adventure at Soulcentricitea , located at the Wonder Shops and Flats . Formerly a historic Wonder Bread factory, the Wonder Shops and Flats is also home to The Combine deli, pizza, and taproom , Ruby Jean’s Juicery and Solid State Pinball Shop and Arcade .
From there, head west on 30th Street to grab coffee, juice and nourishment at Filling Station . Once you've had your fill, head south on Cherry Street, where you'll pass 816 Bicycle Collective . Take a right and head west on 31st Street to check out Made in KC Cafe and Neighborhood Shop and The Black Pantry for local goods and gifts.
Peruse plant-based sustainable products and inquire about spa treatments at Hand & Land . Scoot over to Penn Valley Park via 31st and Wyandotte Streets to roll through green space, and visit The Scout .
Biking Overland
Downtown Overland Park is yet another destination packed with retail shops, boutiques, eateries , bars and attractions worthy of a biking expedition. From the west, you can bike there via side streets and bike lanes on 79th Street or Santa Fe Drive. But if you're coming from the east, avoid Metcalf and take side streets or drive to a nearby spot, then bike from there.
Visitors will find Buffalo State Pizza Company , the upscale Strang Hall food court, olive oils and balsamic vinegar at The Tasteful Olive , tasty brews and food at Brew Lab , and classic neighborhood spots like The Other Place .
Some notable retail shops include Harper’s Fabric and Quilt Company , Penzey’s (known for its spices) and the women’s boutique Ensemble . The Overland Park Farmers’ Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays attracts large crowds for fresh produce and locally-made goods.

Kansas City is a sweet mix of urban mountain biking, classic pathways, and world-class gravel.
To describe cycling in KC, it makes sense to start with cycling outside of KC. The gravel riding here — with rolling hills, pristine tallgrass prairie ecosystems, and perfectly dirty roads — has risen to international fame. Unbound Gravel, which began in Emporia in 2006 with 34 riders, now brings in 4,000-plus participants and is considered one of the world’s top gravel events. But there’s no shortage of other races, including the Lunar Kanza, the Pony Express Gravel Dash, the Cannonball 550, and Rage Against the Chainring. Kansas City itself is a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community, thanks to hundreds of miles of paved trails spanning the metro area and weaving back and forth across the Kansas–Missouri state line. Our top picks: the mostly flat, 17-mile Gary Haller Trail (from Nelson Island, on the Kansas River, to Olathe) and the quiet and easy riding on the pretty 23-mile Indian Creek Bike Trail, which connects lots of parks and playgrounds. Urban KC also has surprisingly accessible mountain biking, whether you hit the 15 miles of rocky trails and nice flow of the Blue River Parkway Trail — or try the 20 miles of stacked loops in Swope Park, which range from mellow curves to tree rides and gap jumps. No matter where you ride, you’ll likely catch glimpse of limestone bluffs, expansive valleys, and gently sloping forest. For a longer adventure, cruise the crushed limestone of the 118-mile Flint Hills trail, where you can still glimpse old wagon ruts and remnants of trading posts left from the earliest days of exploring the West. If you’re after a traditional organized event, sign up for the Wild West Ride, with distances ranging from the Shetland Pony (14 miles) to the Thoroughbred (100 miles).

How it works…
The groups will generally choose 3 destinations they would like to visit along our route throughout the ride. We will meet at International Tap House in the Crossroads (403 E 18th St, Kansas City, MO 64108) and hop on board and begin pedaling to each desired destination. Our “pilot” will be behind the wheel to insure a safe journey to each destination. The ride usually consists of three 15-30 minute stops with 15-30 minutes of ride time between stops. Just tell your pilot where you would like to go when you show up, if you are unfamiliar with the area our pilot will have some good suggestions for you. You must have a group of 6-16 people, we do not pair up groups. All rides are 2 hours long.
Private Tours Only
We only offer the rental of the whole Pedal Hopper for a two hour flat rate for 6-16 people. We have tried to sell single seats in the past but had difficulty getting everyones schedule to line up.

Sustainable city cycling tours offer an eco-friendly and intimate way to explore urban landscapes. These tours allow you to navigate through the heart of cities, often uncovering hidden gems that are not accessible by car or bus. From the bustling streets of Amsterdam to the historic lanes of Kyoto, cycling tours provide a unique perspective on city life, culture, and architecture. This guide takes you on a two-wheeled journey through some of the best cities in the world to explore by bike, each offering a distinct and memorable experience.
1. Amsterdam, Netherlands
In Amsterdam, cycling is more than a mode of transport; it’s a way of life. The city’s flat terrain, dedicated bike lanes, and respectful traffic culture make it ideal for exploring on two wheels. A bike tour here lets you experience the city like a local, weaving through historic canals, past iconic windmills, and through vibrant neighborhoods like the Jordaan. You’ll discover hidden courtyards and bustling marketplaces and perhaps pause for a coffee at a canal-side café. Cycling in Amsterdam offers a blend of leisure and exploration, allowing you to cover more ground than walking while enjoying the city’s sights up close.
Insider’s Tip: Explore the Jordaan neighborhood to glimpse local Amsterdam life away from the tourist crowds.
When To Travel: Late spring to early fall offers pleasant weather for cycling.
How To Get There: Fly into Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The city center is easily accessible by train, and bike rentals are widely available.
2. Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen’s reputation as a bike-friendly city is well-earned. Its extensive network of bike lanes and the Danish culture of cycling make it a joy to explore on two wheels. A bike tour in Copenhagen might include the historic Nyhavn harbor, the whimsical Tivoli Gardens, and the modern architecture of the Ørestad district. Riding through Copenhagen, you’ll experience the city’s commitment to sustainability and quality of life. The tour is not just about seeing the sights; it’s about feeling the city’s pulse and understanding why Copenhagen is often ranked as one of the happiest cities in the world.
Insider’s Tip: Ride through the Assistens Cemetery, a peaceful and beautiful park where famous Danes like Hans Christian Andersen are buried.
When To Travel: May to September for the best cycling weather.
How To Get There: Copenhagen Airport is well-connected internationally, with easy public transport access to the city center.
