A steep climb on the Triund trek that is marked by rocks and boulders

Difficulty Level: Easy

The trek involves gradual to steep ascents that even amateurs can cover. And since the Mcleodganj to Triund distance is not much, it is not very exhausting either. The first 5 km of the Triund trek are simple and not very undulating. Thereon, the Triund trek route gets steep and requires a sturdy walk. This stretch is popularly known as 22 curves because of the 22 sharp curves en route.

However, if you are trekking during winters, the trek becomes slightly difficult due to the presence of snow on the otherwise firm and well-defined path.

These are some of the following tips we recommend you to keep in mind while planning for the Triund trek.

  • Go for this trek with someone who has done it before. An authorised Triund Trek guide will be better.
  • There are a few guesthouses in the Gallu Devi Temple area. If you want, you can even take a halt there before going for the climb.
  • Night camping is not allowed at Triund peak. So, we recommend you to stay at any of the guest houses by Forest Department available. You can also book rooms at Dharamkot Village or Shiva Cafe as these two have been highly rated by our travelers.

Triund Trek: A Face-Off With The Dhauladhar Range

' src=

The trek up to Triund hill was the tail end event of the entire Himachal backpacking trip. An Unknown path, steep and rocky trail, blind trust in google maps, with nothing but an intuitive sense of direction, an impending deadline, and unexplainable love for mountains. It was a perfect recipe for an adventure. And when it comes to adventures, I am game for it, come what may. Looking back at that trek, it reminds of these beautiful yet lasting words by James Baldwin.

And once you realize that you can do something, it would be difficult to live with yourself if you didn’t do it. James Baldwin, The Paris Review.

There is something with climbing mountains that I simply can’t give up on (read the description of the Instagram post below to know what). climbing mountains gave so much satisfaction that it’s very difficult to live with myself if I didn’t. Especially when you can see the peak challenging you from the window of your hostel, I simply can’t tuck myself under the blanket.

View this post on Instagram Why do you have to trek sir, That busy mind of mine keeps asking me. Why do you have to take the pain And climb huge mountains Why do you have to take the pain To cross slippery rocks Why do you have to take the pain To walk alongside dangerous ridges With a sigh, I reply!! Those huge mountains, Represent the huge challenges I have set for myself Those slippery rocks Represent the pitfalls in my plans The dangerous ridges represent The risks you gotta take to complete the challenges. But above all, Trekking teaches you one thing Really Really well. That is to always, always take One step at a time. No more no less. Just One Step. And soon you'll find yourself On top of the summit. P.S. So, it was the last circuit of the Himachal Backpacking trip with my friends. After a whirlwind trip from Delhi to Kasol and flying high in Bir Billing, we landed in Mcleodganj after what seemed like a grueling journey. The last few days have been intense, hectic and what not. But the moment I put my foot down at Mcleodganj the snow-capped mountains of Dhauladhar range allured me. My whole purpose of adding Mcleodganj to the itinerary was to get a little closer to those massifs. So, I asked my friends if they were up for the trek. All but Hithesh and Santhosh said no. Understandably so.

The choice for me, however, was obvious. I looked at the massifs and gave a thumbs up, “Challenge Accepted and you shall be scaled”. The others planned to explore the Dharamshala the following day. Read on to know all about my experience of the Triund Trek.

Table of Contents

We knew we were up for a challenge. The trek was 8 KM one way. We were planning to go via the Bhagsunag waterfall. This trail was the only option left other than the one from Gallu Devi which was 10 KM one way. The problem, however, was that the trail through Bhagsunag Waterfalls wasn’t very clear on maps or the ground. On top of that, we had a bus to catch in the evening, to reach Delhi. So, we had to start early, be alert mentally about where we were going and push ourselves to not give up until we boarded the bus 😉

So, we set the alarm, woke up, and started the hike at around 6 AM.

triund trek blog

We reached the Mcleodganj taxi stand and took the street towards the Bhagsunag temple. After crossing the temple there was a concrete path made all the way to shiva cafe. You can see the Bhagsu Nag waterfall from here. A beautiful stream of water running down between the hills.

Bhagsunag Waterfalls Mcleodganj

The concrete path had too many stairs in between that slowed us down a little. But within no time we reached the famous Shiva Cafe. Because it was too early in the morning, Shiva cafe was closed but it had all the vibes of a peaceful place.

Shiva Cafe McleodGanj

We crossed over the Bhagsunag Waterfalls to reach the other mountain. The trail started to narrow down from here. It didn’t look difficult but had too many diversions and turns. Maps ceased to work and we were left with our own judgment on which trail to take.

Into The Unknown Trails To Triund

One of the thumb rule you can use is to see if the trail has any footmarks, indicating recent usage. And another is to look at the peak and see if you’re not deviating far from the peak. We crossed that trail and reached a point with some magnificent views of the sleeping Mcleodganj.

Sunrise Over McleodGanj

The sun just started uncovering the lush greenery from the low-lit early mornings. We continued walking and this particular stretch was a little steep but there was a hut at the end of it. So with pumped-up energy, we reached the hut.

Breakfast Time

We ordered some Maggi and chai to recoup some energy. There was an elderly man running the store. We also asked him if we were on the right path to reach the peak. He nodded with a smile. Such a lovely smile 😀 We paid for the meals and started the hike again.

Breakfast On Triund Trail

The trail just disappeared from here on. We knew we had to reach the ridge in front of us. All we could see were thorny and dense plants in front of us. A muddy path appeared on close inspection. We just assumed it would be the trail and started walking with the sight undeviated from the peak.

The Trail Of Thorns and Hops

Soon it leads to another trail and we hopped onto that and then another one appeared and just like that, we navigated past the thorny patch. It was indeed a real-life example of “Set your eyes on the destination and you’ll always figure a way to reach there.” Because sometimes that’s life.

You have a sense of where you wanna go and you reach there by trial and error.

Climb Or Walk?

We were now at the start of the ridge. On one side it was the grandiosity of Dharamshala and Mcleodganj. Look at those brick-sized brick walls in front of the mighty mountains. It felt as if, if not for their mercy, those brick walls would’ve crumbled a long time ago. And on the other side, we had a steep climb ahead of us.

Birds Eye View Of McleodGanj From Triund Trek

While the ridge was really steep, almost as if it touched the sky but there was another route available by the side. We started hiking on the other route. And boy we were so glad we took this route. Just after a 100m- 200m walk on this route, we found another cafe. It wasn’t open yet but there were a few granite slabs turned into Sofas for customers to sit. I sat on one of the granite sofas. This cafe was almost on the edge of the mountain. So my eyesight slowly went down the valley before taking a steep climb up to a towering snow-capped mountain. What a tiny speck of dust I was in front of the majestic mountain.

Cafe With The View On Triund Trail

As much as we wanted to stay, the thought of getting a better view from the top made us restart the hike again. The hiking route took us up the ridge again and this time we continued on the ridge without any deviations.

The sun was right on our backs. The sweater I got slowly turned from a shield to baggage. The ridge walk became rough after a while. With steep climbs on a rocky path, it just threw one blow after another.

The Magic Unfurls

By then the snow-capped mountains started wrapping clouds around them. As if they’re doing a magic show to entertain us and make us forget and endure the pain of the steep climb. The occasional sight of a Himalayan Griffon made it all worthwhile.

Meadows And Massifs Of Triund

The first steep climb was behind us and the mountain rewarded us with another. We conquered that as well thinking the peak or Triund campsite was just at the top. But I think the ridge fell in love with our determination, So it presented yet another steep climb, we trekked up that too and then another and another and another. And we yelled at the ridge, “Up Up here we go” .

Trails of Triund

We kept taking small breaks and continued the climb. Occasionally looking back at the downward slope all the way to Mcleodganj. From that point, Mcleodganj was as tiny as an ant. The climb didn’t end there and the steep slopes kept challenging us. Added to that, the sun was merciless too. So we took the meadows to ease the stress on the legs for a while.

Meadows Of Triund Trek

After a brief walk on the meadows, the trail flattened out. The meadows were dotted with huge rocks.

Rocky Trails Of Triund

Face-Off With Dhauladhar Range

To our utter surprise, We reached the Triund Campsite at around 10:15 AM. And there it was, the magnificent Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. With nothing but courage and a paraglide away from where we stood. I just stood there, taking in everything I can.

Reaching Triund Hilltop

The slippery glacial slopes, the towering sharpness of the peak, the clouds caressing its crown. I sometimes wonder, how on earth do such meadows even exist. I mean, look around, all you see are nothing but towering and unreachable peaks. Yet, almost magically, you have this Triund hill. A hill with all its meadows makes the perfect ground for you to witness the mighty mountains. I sometimes feel its all part of a clever architect’s design.

The Magnificent Dhauladhar Range

I was in love with that place. Just resting there, looking at those mountains made me unreasonably happy. With enough time at hand, we decided to take it slow.

Tranquility Of Triund

Looking at the cloud patterns it appeared to rain, so at around 12 PM we started the climb down the same way. Considering the trail was completely downhill, it was quick and not as tiring as it was. One last click before the rain kicked in xD

Posers Of Triund

On the way back we saw a few people. They may have climbed up via the trail starting at Gallu Devi Temple, stayed at the Triund campsite overnight (which I believe is now banned), and were climbing down. We climbed down the hill, hiked through the thorny trail, and after the last stretch of those winding narrow trails which were now familiar, we saw the Shiva Cafe. I was proved wrong when I said it had the vibes of a peaceful place. Against all my thoughts, it was surprisingly crowded. So crowded that we had to wait for a while to get a seat to sit and eat.

Shiva Cafe On the Way Back

We reached the La Vaca Hostel at around 3:30 PM. Met the other guys, packed our bags, and left to Dharamshala for the bus back to Delhi. For the first time during that trip, I stood there in silence witnessing the myriad shades of sunset sky. And just like that, we bid goodbye to the sun, Dharamshala and the Dhauladhar range of Himalayas.

The Goodbye Sunset At Dharamshala

As part of my effort to help more and more travelers witness the beauty of this world, I’m adding few FAQs to help you plan a hike up to the Triund Peak.

Why Should You Choose Triund Trek?

How long is the triund trek.

There are two routes you can choose for the trek. The trek to Triund via Bhagsu nag waterfalls is the shortest but also the toughest. The trail via Bhagsu nag waterfalls is 8KM one way . The other route to Triund via Gallu Devi temple is 10 KM one way but it’s not as tough as the first one.

How to do Triund trek?

If it was earlier, I would’ve advised you to set aside 2 days for the Triund Trek. The sunset and sunrise are supposedly breathtaking. But camping is now banned. So you can plan to do this in one day. I would suggest you start very early

How To Reach Triund Trek?

The basecamp for the Triund Trek is Mcleodganj. McLedoganj is 8 KM from Dharamshala and is frequented by local buses every 20 Mins. Dharamshala, in turn, is connected with all major cities in India via road. There are overnight Volvo buses running to and from Dharamshala to all major cities like Shimla, Manali, Chandigarh, and Delhi. So you can reach Dharamshala by bus from cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, etc.

You can even choose to fly down to Dharamshala. Book a ticket to Kangra Airport from wherever you’re in the world.

While at Mcleodganj, ask for Dharamkot which is another small area near McLeodganj. After reaching Dharamkot, ask for Bhagunaag Temple or look it up on maps. Once at the Bhagsunaag temple, take the concrete path towards Bhagsunag Waterfall. The waterfall is visible clearly once you cross the temple. Follow the trail to reach the Triund Peak via Bhagsunaag waterfalls. If you want to take the less intense Gallu Devi trail, then the Gallu Devi temple is about 1.6 KM from Bhagsunag Temple.

How difficult is Triund Trek?

Although the difficulty is subjective, I can assure you that if you have basic fitness, (If you can clock 5KM sprint in 40-45 Mins) then you will be able to comfortably finish the trek in one day. Even if you take the trial via Bhagsu Nag waterfalls. So, I would classify it as an easy to moderate trek. Triund trek is regarded as one of the best treks for beginners.

How To Plan For Triund Trek?

If you are coming from Delhi or nearby cities, take an overnight bus on one of your leisure weekends. Reach Dharamkot and start the trek using the directions mentioned above. Complete the trek. Stay in one of the hostels (I stayed in La Vaca Hostel , inexpensive for students too and very cozy). Explore Dharamshala the next day and head back to your city via another overnight bus.

In Case you’re planning for Triund Trek from Hyderabad or Bengaluru or Mumbai, then I recommend you to club a few other places in Himachal Pradesh. I personally took a week off and explored Kasol(Check out my blog post here ), hiked up the meadows of Kheerganga(Check out the DIY guide here ), Manali, did Paragliding Bir Billing, and landed at Mcleodganj for the trek. It was very hectic for me so you may delete or swap a few places. My strong recommendation is don’t come all the way just for Triund Trek.

Essentials For Triund Trek?

If you’re doing a one-day trek to Triund, then below are few items I definitely recommend:

  • Sweatshirt (If you’re starting very early)
  • Good Hiking Shoes
  • Comfortable pair of clothes.
  • Another pair if you wish to get into Bhagsunaag waterfalls on your way back.
  • 2-3 Liters of Water. It gets really hot at the top during the summer months.
  • Shades/sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Protein bars or Nutri Bikies to energize yourself. Don’t pack the entire supermarket citing the hiking reason. And PLEASE DON’T LITTER.

P.S: For Ladies, please pack essentials as deemed necessary by you beyond the above-mentioned items. Safe trekking.

P.P.S: I’ve mentioned the above essentials keeping summer months in mind. Please plan according the season in which you’re planning to go.

Is Triund Trek Safe?

Whenever you are in the mountains, you are always at the mercy of nature. Please respect the nature and conditions and you will be good. The trail from Bhagsunag waterfalls to Triund is a continuous climb. I am sure of its slippery nature in monsoons. The trail from the Gallu Devi temple is a ridge walk. So, it is quite dangerous in the event of a landslide. Otherwise, the trail is very good for hiking. Just respect the nature and overcast conditions and you will be safe in the lap of nature.

Can Triund trek be done alone?

It is given that Triund Trek is very ideal for beginners and also the trail is clear from the Gallu Devi temple. So, even solo trekkers and travelers can hike up to the Triund campsite without any doubts in mind. Take sufficient snacks and water and precautions about your personal safety while you’re on and off the trail. It’s highly likely that you will find enough people to befriend if you take the Gallu Devi temple. So rest assured and you can do this trek completely on your own without a guide.

Where To Stay In Your Trip To Triund Trek?

Dharamkot is the basecamp for a lot of treks in the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. By the virtue of that, there are a number of backpackers hostels in McleodGanj and Dharamkot. You can find branded backpacker hostels like Hosteller, La Vaca Hostel, etc. We stayed in La Vaca hostel and it was really comfortable and affordable. You can check for bookings on booking.com or Airbnb.

Other Treks Near Triund!

So, if you have more time at hand you can go for other trekking destinations around Triund. Treks like Indrahar Pass Trek, Laka Glacier Trekking are all one day trek away from Triund hill. Refer to this article for more details.

Cost of Triund Trek!

Barring the personal expenses, the cost for Triund Trek is INR 0 rupees. You read that right, unsure why, but there is no entry fee for Triund trek. So if you’re doing it on your own it’s completely free of cost.

What’s The Height Of Triund Hill?

The Triund Hill is at a height aka Altitude of 2850m above sea level. It is situated at the foot of the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas.

Triund Trek Map/Route

Refer to the below-handmarked trek route for reaching Triund Hill from Mcleodganj. I’ve marked the trails for both the trails of Bhagusnag Waterfalls as well as the Gallu Devi Temple trail.

Triund Route Map From McleodGanj

Should You Choose Kheerganga Trek or Triund Trek?

Honestly, there is no right answer. For me, Kheerganga was more exciting simply because it had much more variety. Kheerganga has meadows, forests, steep climbs, waterfalls, and above all hot water springs. You can read about my experience here . But on the other hand, Triund Trek brought me much closer to the snow-capped mountains which were just distant backgrounds in pictures during Kheerganga Trek. However, Kheerganga is a moderate difficulty trek and you need two days to complete the trek. So if you have two days to spare, give Kheerganga a shot. If you’re looking for a quick weekend trek, then go for Triund.

Hope the FAQs help you plan your trip better. Have a good time in the Himalayas and while you’re there, take care of the mountains.

Triund Trek in McLeod Ganj : A complete guide

Standing over the green meadows at the top of Triund,  I was overwhelmed   by the sight of the snow covered  imposing face of the Himalayas. I can hardly ever forget that image! At the same time, it was natural for me to feel philosophical up there. At the top, it suddenly turns adventure into spirituality, a very unique experience indeed! However, in order to experience that unique feeling, one has to complete a 10 km long trek. Though the Himalayas offer scores of trekking options, Triund trek in McLeod Ganj is one of the moderate ones. If you are up for that experience, here’s a complete guide to the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj.

{To make your reading complete, here’s the link to our Triund trek diary:  Triund: Trekking in a garden }.  {For more such trekking plans, do check out:  Dzukou Valley Trek }

The base location: McLeod Ganj/ Dharamshala

The location of Triund near McLeod Ganj in Dharamshala couldn’t be any better. Its history, heritage, scenic views, cultural and spiritual vibes are reasons for me to go back again and again. It was established as a hill-station by the British in the later part of the 19th century. In fact, it’s named after a British lieutenant governor- David Friell Mcleod.

{Read about another hill-station named after a British official:  Dalhousie }

It was only in the post-independence era, in 1959, Tibetan leader- His Highness the Dalai Lama sought political refuge in India. In an act of solidarity with the Tibetan freedom struggle, Indian government permitted to set up his capital in exile in McLeod Ganj. Since then,  McLeod Ganj has become a hub of Tibetan Buddhism, and is known as ‘Little Lhasa’ (the capital of Tibet).

On my part, I have a fondness for Buddhist philosophy as well as Tibetan culture, especially their colourful Monasteries.  Besides, Dharamshala is also home to tea gardens, heritage sites and much more. In many ways, it reminds me of  Darjeeling  (have look). Find a list of major tourist attractions in Dharamshala-McLeod Ganj in a section  below .

Triund Trek in McLeod Ganj: A fact sheet

Triund peak is 2850 meters (9350 feet) above sea level. The  route of  Triund trek in McLeod Ganj is 9-10 kilometers (one way) from the base to the top, and can be covered in 5-6 hours. If one starts early in the morning, one can complete the Triund trek in one day. However, a night-stay in a tent at the Triund peak overseeing the snowy mountains is an amazing experience not to miss.

For your information, some trekkers go much beyond Triund peak. They trek up to snow-line at 3500 meters (10,000 feet), and Indrahar pass at 4300 meters (14108 ft). Thus, if you are interested in trekking beyond Triund peak, have some more days in hand.

Triund Trek in McLeod Ganj: How to plan

We heard that trekkers do it in all seasons across the year. But in general, in my view, spring (March-April) is the best time. The temperature is just perfect, neither too cold nor too hot. Besides, clear skies mean the best views. And of course, not to forget the  Rhododendrons  ( Buraansh in Hindi). Because Rhododendron flowers bloom only in the spring.  Believe me, the walk among the Rhododendrons is absolutely enjoyable.

triund-trekking-gang

Monsoons could be risky due to possibility of landslide/ rocks falling off. Besides, thick clouds block views of the valley. Winters would be too cold to enjoy, especially the night camping at the top. In the summer, day time trekking would be really difficult; but one can start in the wee hours of the morning.

Arranging the trek (with a guide or without):

Though one really doesn’t need a guide to trek, it’s good to have one if you are doing it the first time, or you are with family. The guide’s company provides all amenities like tents, blankets and food/ water, etc. They carry all the stuff by mountain-hardened horses. They charge approximately Rs. 1000 per person, including guide services, tents, sleeping gear, food, etc.

If you need a guide, you may contact Anil (we have his mobile phone number; just ask in the comment section).

To camp overnight or not:

No doubt, camping for the night at the top is a must do. The blanket of stars spread across the clear night sky makes it an unforgettable experience. The nearby snow-clad mountains are visible even in the darkness of night. And if it is a full moon night, one would enjoy sitting outside the tents or walking around the plateau. Plus, the experience of the morning-after is also beautiful. See in the picture below how a morning at the top looks like.

Alone or in a group:

While travelling in groups can be a little limiting (freedom) in general, I would say it’s more enjoyable trekking (and other adventure trips) in groups rather than alone. Moreover, trekking in group reduces the fear factor, and calms down the nerves.

The trek route and schedule

The two routes:.

There are two main routes to complete the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj:

  • While one route starts from Bhagsunag temple side, the other one starts from the Guna Devi temple.
  • Though the route that starts from Bhagsunag temple is a bit shorter than the other one, it’s steeper at places.
  • The route starting Guna Devi temple is longer, but has gentler slopes. However, in order to take this route, one needs to hire a vehicle to get dropped at Guna Devi temple, some 2-3 kms away. Else, add that distance in the trek itself, which makes it around 12+ kilometers.
  • In any case, both the routes have easy to moderate slopes at different points.
  • Overall, I would suggest first timers to take the Guna Devi temple route.

triund-trek-mcleod-ganj

When to start:

  • In order to complete the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj in one day, one should start as early as possible in the day so as to reach the top by early afternoon. This way, one has some time in hand to spend at the top, and enough time to reach back McLeod Ganj before it’s dark.
  • If one is planning for night camping, the starting time can be a little late in the morning. But it’s always good to start early so as to avoid trekking in the afternoon sun, unless it’s winter or spring.

The trekking path:

As Triund is a popular trek route in McLeod Ganj, the trekking path is well laid out. Moreover, unlike many trekking routes, one would not get lost on the way. At places, the path is like a stairway made of rocks/ stones. At other places, it’s just a gentle slope to hike. It’s only towards the end of the trek that the path becomes a little steep and a bit difficult, that’s only about 1 km.

One thing that I loved particularly about the trekking path was the abundance of blooming Rhododendron trees. Interestingly, number of these trees kept increasing as we gained height. So much so that at one point, it just felt like trekking in a garden! You will experience the same if you are trekking in the spring.

rhododendrons-triund-trek-mcleod-ganj

The Midway rest points:

On the way, there are two proper halting stations, which really means two decent eateries. The first one is called the Magic point, approximately 2 kms from the starting point.

Just ahead of the Magic point, look for a small off-route towards left side. Hike a bit to find a nice view point, perfect for photography. I liked a huge black rock there inching out of the hill surface like a cliff. It’s easy to climb up there and take cool clicks!

The second one doesn’t have a name, but it’s like a little polythene covered snack point. After the second rest point, the trekking route becomes gradually more difficult.

magic-point-triund-trek-mcleod-ganj

How is it at the top:

Once you reach the top, it’s but obvious to be overwhelmed by the sight of those snow-clad Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. You will feel as if the grand mountains are smiling at you and are welcoming you to their home. Instantaneously, all the pain taken in the last 5-6 hours would vanish, and would seem totally worth it.

After a while, you will notice the lush green plateau beneath your feet. Huge pieces of boulders interspersing the meadows look fascinating!

Triund Trek in McLeod Ganj: Miscellaneous Tips

In this section, I list out a few miscellaneous tips which might be helpful in planning and making up your mind for the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj.

How to reach:

  • By air: Gaggal airport, 15 kms away | Flights from Delhi and Chandigarh
  • By train: Joginder Nagar is the nearest station, 70 kms away
  • By road: Regular comfort buses from Delhi (~500 kms) and Chandigarh (250 kms) | Or, one can drive

Where to stay:

  • Budget hotels:  Moon Walk Residency | Hotel Akash | Albela House | Grand View Lodge | Treebo Trend Roshan House | Green Hotel | King Castle
  • Hostels:  The Hosteller (Bhagsunag | Mall Road) | Moustache | Zostel | Mitra Hostel | Young Monk Hostel & Cafe | Alt-Life Dharamkot | La Vaca India | goSTOPS.

Where to eat:

The Clay Oven | Tibet Kitchen | Hummingbird cafe | Tibetan Mandala cafe | Moonpeak cafe | Nick’s Italian Kitchen | Jimmy’s Italian | Illiterati Books & Coffee | Crepe Pancake | Four Seasons Cafe

Dress for the trek:

  • Wear comfortable fitting clothes. Avoid tight-fitting clothes like jeans.
  • Put on layers (sweaters, jackets etc) as per seasonal requirement.
  • The weather can deteriorate any time at the top. So, it’s good to carry some woolens even during the summers.
  • Trekking shoes, or at least good sports shoes with grip is a must.
  • Besides, a cap or some kind of head gear is advisable.
  • Further, sunglasses are a good addition.

magic-point-triund-trek-mcleod-ganj

Big question: Is there a toilet up there?

Answer: No; so, you know what to do, right! (The Forest Deptt. is not allowing any construction work at the top. However, somewhere below the peak, some trek operators have toilet facilities). In any case, believe me, toilet would not matter; everyone manages just well, out in the open.

Things to carry:

  • If you are not on a guided trek, of course you have to carry the tent, blanket, food etc.
  • A torch, a lighter and an umbrella would be handy
  • A walking/ trekking stick is optional (we didn’t need them)
  • Some dry snacks/ energy bar
  • Water bottle; not too many, just one to start with. Their weight can be annoying. In any case, there are small shops at 2-3 points on the way.
  • Above all, carry basic first-aid kit; sun-screen lotion, etc.
  • While you might want to carry a lot of things, control your urge. It will be better to keep yourself light rather than stuffed.

Things to explore in McLeod Ganj/ Dharamshala

By the way, after completing the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj, you better have some more time to explore that wonderful place. There are so many interesting places to see and things to do! Here are a few that I would suggest.

Natural sites:

  • Naddi view point; nice to walk around in the wilderness enjoying the views
  • If you love waterfalls, hike 1-2 kms to reach Bhagsu Waterfalls
  • Dharamkot, a sleepy village to leisurely hangout
  • Dharamshala Tea Gardens; enjoy the view, and shop some great tea
  • Dal lake, a cute little lake
  • If you love paragliding, you have to travel a bit more to reach Bir- Billing, the paragliding site, 75 kms away.

Cultural Experiences:

  • For a great spiritual experience, visit the Dalai Lama temple complex. Find out if he is around, and speaking at the temple one evening
  • Namgyal Monastery, a beautiful Buddhist temple
  • Shakti Peeth Chamunda Devi temple; 25 kms
  • Tashi Jong Monastery; 56 kms away
  • Baijnath Shiva temple; 60 kms away
  • Conveniently, the last three places are actually on the same route, i.e. towards Bir.

Heritage sites:

  • Church of St. John in the wilderness; established 1852
  • Norbulingka Institute: Tibetan school of art and craft; 15 kms away
  • Kangra fort; the largest fort in the Himalayas, and one of the oldest in India; 30 kms away
  • Musroor rock cut temple; an 8th century Hindu temple; 45 kms away.

musroor-rock-cut-temple

Other sites of interest:

  • The Tibet Museum; a great collection of Tibetan artefacts and culture
  • Dharamshala Cricket Stadium: A picturesque ground with the Himalayas in the backdrop
  • Kangra Art Museum; rich collection of traditional miniature paintings.

Concluding Notes

Triund trek in McLeod Ganj is really enjoyable with gentle slopes and great views of the Himalayas all around. It’s long enough to give that satisfaction of completing a proper trek. At the same time, i t’s not too long to deter non-regulars to undertake this trek. If you have never done trekking in mountains, Triund trek in McLeod Ganj is a great option to start the journey.

I would suggest to plan your trek in the spring season- late March to April end, especially because of pleasant weather and the Rhododendron flowers. Do plan for a overnight camping at the top. Further, icing on the cake would be a full moon night. If possible, do it in a small group- your best buddies.

Besides, please don’t forget to have some extra time (at least two days) on hand to explore places in and around McLeod Ganj. Have a great time and thank me later!

Triund Trek: Complete Guide for an Adventure Experience

If you are an ardent trekker, you probably have heard about Triund and even have added this to your wishlist. But if you are yet to be introduced to Triund, let us do the honour! Triund is a stunning trekking destination in the state of Uttarakhand. 18 km away from Dharamshala, in the lap of the Dhauladhar Range is Triund’s permanent address. With the Dhauladhar Range in the backdrop and the Kangra Valley on the other side, Triund offers breathtaking views! And these views keep changing their sheds with the coming and going of dusk, dawn and moonrise!

Coming to the trek, there are quite distinctly visible trails, leading across the luxuriant forests of oak and rhododendron. So, you can easily trek through while enjoying the encompassing natural sights! Can’t wait to plan a Triund Trek? Then don’t. Plan your Triund Trek right away and below is a complete guide with all the Triund trek details to help you out!

The best time for planning a Triund Trek

First thing first, deciding on the time for planning the trek! The trek is open throughout the year except for the months of January and February! During the two months, Triund generally receives heavy snowfalls and that makes some of the trails completely inaccessible. So, avoid these two months and you will be good to go! But if you want our recommendation, we will say the time between March and June is the Triund trek best time to go. In fact, Triund is considered to be one of the treks to do in India in March . The weather this time remains pleasant and you will get clear views.

How to reach Triund

Before you start your Triund Trek, you will have to know how to reach Triund trek. So, why don’t we get that sorted! The base camps for Triund Trek are in Dharamkot-Kangra, Mcleodganj-Dharamshala and Bhagsunag-Dharamshala. You can board a flight to Dharamshala or Gaggal (Kangra) airport. If you want to take the railways, the nearest railway station to both is at Pathankot.

Triund Trek difficulty level

Triund Trek difficulty level

Let us break down a few details and then come to a verdict, alright? The trail moves from gradual to steep ascents. That means, even if you are a novice, you can trek easily. Also, the distance to Triund from the base camp (any of the three) is not that much. So, you will not get tired. Basically, the first 5 km of the trek will be easy. After that, the trek becomes a little steeper and hence, will require you to walk in a sturdy manner. The stretch named 22 curves is going to be a little difficult since it actually has 22 curves.

So, if you have an overall look, the verdict on this trek’s difficulty level is easy. But there’s a catch. The closer you are to the winter months, the tougher the trek can become. And if there is snow, the trails will become quite hard.

Let’s plan the Triund Trek

With all the basic details in mind, it is time to finally plan the Triund hill trek. We will do so in two phases spread over two days. And among the three base camps, we are starting the trek from Dharamkot base camp. If you want to start your trek from any of the other two base camps you can. The two phrases will remain the same, ascending to Triund from the selected base camp and then descending from Triund to base camp.

Phase 1: Base camp (Dharamkot-Kangra) to Triund Trek

The first day of your Triund Trek begins! Wake up as early as possible, have your breakfast and then get started. Locate the water tank near Dharamkot Government Primary School. Beside that water tank, you will find a trail going through the forest. That’s your way! After walking for some time, you will reach the Galu Temple. Here you can stop for a few minutes and sip on some tea from the shop located just below the temple. You will also spot the trekking trail with a forest checkpoint. No charges will be required, but your ID and backpacks will be checked.

Once the checking is done, continue your trekking. The trails will start rising here. But you will be rewarded with oak forests, Laka ridge and clear views of the Dhauladhar range. From here onwards, you will face many carves (22 in total), rhododendron forests, a cafe and some dhabas as you make your way to the Triund! Once you have reached, first of all, take some time to witness the serene natural beauty around you. Then have some tea and food. And set up your tent or stay in the Forest Rest House (prior booking needed!

The distance of this trek is 5.45 km and it will take you around 4 hours.

Phase 2: Back from Triund to base camp

After camping at Triund overnight, wake up early so that you don’t miss the sunrise. Trust us, the sunlight falling over the Kangra Valley will be a sight worth remembering forever! If you want, you can spend some time here, clicking pictures and soaking in the beauty here. Once you are done, start trekking down the same way you came up. Descending Triund to the base camp obviously will take less time than ascending. And hence, it will be the best time to go slow and explore the cafes and other spots on the trails.

Two more things! Instead of going for a 2-day trek, you can cover the whole trek in 1-day as well. However, you will not have enough time to explore the trail as much! Also, if you have time on your hand, instead of making a stop at Triund and then coming back to base camp, you can trek further to Lahesh cave and then trek back.

Since you will be descending the same trail, you will be covering a distance of 4.45 km and it will take you another 4 hours to return to the base camp.

Triund Trek undoubtedly is one of the best treks in India and we highly recommend this one! Happy trekking!

The beauty of Himachal Pradesh in its finest form

Reaching Triund from Mcleodganj

Galu is a starting point of the Triund trek. In order to reach Galu, one can either hire a taxi from Mcleodganj , or just start the trek right from there. Many travellers start their trek from Bhagsu Nag which is famous for the stunning waterfall. Moreover, while trekking from Galu, one has to follow a path which goes through a dense forest covered with deodar and oak trees. In case, you face any difficulty while climbing up, you can hire a horse/pony to reach the top.

The beginning of My Triund Adventure

I started my solo journey at around 5am from Delhi, taking a route via Sonipat, Panipat, Ambala, Chandigarh and Solan. Because I didn’t want to miss the Parathas of the most famous restaurant, Amrik Sukhdev, I stopped my car at Murthal.  I gobbled 3 buttery Parathas with a glass of creamy Lassi that was actually a divine treat to my taste buds! I reached Dharamshala by 5pm, and searched for a place away from the hustle-bustle of the town. After visiting several guest houses and hotels, I ended up settling at a hotel in Naddi village which was much more secluded and peaceful than the other places I had searched. Enclosed by the village, the hotel offered wonderful views of the splendid Dhauladhar Ranges. On the next day, I decided to go to Bhagsu Nag Temple which is situated in Mcleodganj. Before reaching there, I came across St. John’s church. Without a second thought, I parked my car and went down to the cathedral. Later I visited Bhagsu Temple, Dalai Lama Temple and Dal Lake. After capturing several photos with my DSLR and getting mesmerized by the calmness of the soothing environment of Dalai Lama Temple, I went to Jimmy’s Bakery for breakfast and Taste Of India for lunch.  In the evening, I explored Tibetan Market, where I did some shopping for my friends and family. On the second day, I started my long awaited trek to Triund from Naddi village at around 9 am. After collecting information from locals, I first reached Dharamkot covering a distance of 3 km. The trek was delightful, with sights of colourful prayer flags, flowers, mud houses and alpine trees. Meanwhile, I met few other trekkers as well. After introducing ourselves we headed towards Galu Devi Temple, which serves as a base for the trek. I stayed there for 10 minutes to refill my water bottle and to click some pictures. One thing that I can’t forget was the group of talented mountain goats; talented because they were balancing themselves amazingly while grazing on that steep mountain! The last one hour of the trek was a test of my fitness, as I was exhausted by the end. I reached the top of this majestic hill by 2 pm which, I think, was good timing. The glance of Triund top was the curtain raiser to all my expectations. It gave peace to my mind while soaking away all my tiredness. The biggest surprise that was waiting for us was snowfall. I stayed overnight in the camp that was set on the top of Triund hill, and the night sky, with all its twinkling stars, mesmerized me.

Triund Trek — All You Need To Know

For nearly all tourists visiting Dharamshala and Mcleodgunj , the Triund trek remains a must-do. It is one of those popular places in Himachal Pradesh that you will find on most tourist’s wishlists.

“You have been to Dharamshala so many times and never did Triund trek?” I remember my friend being flabbergasted when he realised how despite being to Dharamshala about a dozen times I never visited Triund Top. “I find it too mainstream,” I replied in my defence.

But this time, in December 2020, as I spent a week in Dharamkot (also known as the Mini Israel of India ), I decided I was going to do it. To make it more exciting and not feel that I am following the crowd, I decided to do it in as little time as possible.

“How long does it take to do Triund trek?” I asked the manager at the hostel I was staying. “Most people do it in 4 to 5 hours,” he replied. “How long will you take it if you were to do it in the least possible time?” I asked.

“1 hour 30 minutes”!

And that was it! The challenge was taken!!

The next thing I knew, we (me and Sanjeev — the same property manager and now a good friend) pushing ourselves to do Triund trek in under 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Triund Trek

One of the popular treks in the state of Himachal Pradesh, it can be counted amongst the easiest Himalayan treks too. With breathtaking views of the adjoining Kangra valley (that connects Kangra to Dharamshala) on one side and the snow-covered Dhauladhar range  on the other, it is also quite picturesque.

On the way, trekkers come across a number of cliffs ideal for Instagram’s perfect spots.

Triund Trek is ideal for those who are seeking a hassle-free taste of trekking in the Himalayas. No need to hire a guide or look for a trek-buddy, just do it solo. The trek is, moreover, well-marked.

It is possible to travel all the way from Delhi or Chandigarh and do it over the weekend.

The trail to Triund is short (about 9km from Dharamkot, or 11 km from McleodGunj) but quite steep. On the way, trekkers come across rhododendron and oak trees with a few maggie point too to buy refreshments.

Given the fact that the trek is quite easy and popular, there are a large number of trekkers attempting it, particularly on weekends making it difficult to enjoy the serenity of the place. Therefore, the best time to do Triund trek is during the weekdays and during the non-peak season. On a normal day, it is possible to find hundreds of trekkers making their way or coming from the Triund Top.

The town of McLeodganj also provides for a great opportunity to experience the culture of Tibetan migrants in India.

buddhism prayer

How Long Does The Trek Take

For most tourists, it takes about 4 hours to reach Triund Top (from the town of Dharamkot, add another 30 minutes for Mcleodgunj to Dharamkot).

I, however, did it in 1 hour 30 minutes from Dharamkot, without making any stops. Let me also mention that I never ran during the trek but only walked a little faster than most tourists do.

Locals guides can do Triund trek in less than 50 minutes. I met someone during my trip who claimed to have done it in 45 minutes. The person was a local guide too.

So yea, considering you’re not an avid trekker and are going to take a few photo-stops, it is going to take 4 or 5 hours. It is therefore advised to begin from Dharamkot no later than 9 am. The earlier you start and the earlier you reach the top the more time you will have to enjoy on the way and still return in time.

Technically, the return journey takes almost half of the total time taken to reach to the top.

triund trek

Where Does Triund Trek Begin From

From the town of Dharamkot. Dharamkot is located at 2km from McleodGunj and about 4km from Dharamshala. From Dharamkot, it is quite easy to spot the way.

Trekkers start their walk from Zostel, Dharamkot (easy to Google Navigate) from where they reach Gallu Devi Temple (about 800m from Zostel). Right next to Gallu Devi Temple is Triund Trek Checkpoint.

The forest officer, at the checkpoint, makes sure trekkers are not carrying any plastic, drugs or alcohol.

Please note that the last time to check-in at the checkpoint is 11:30 am. There are a few other shortcuts to avoid the checkpoint but they’re not advised to be taken.

How to Reach Triund Trek

As mentioned above, the trek begins from the town of Dharamkot.

There are regular buses (ordinary and luxury Volvos both) from all major towns like Delhi, Chandigarh and Amritsar to Dharamshala-Mcleodgunj. From Dharamshala/Mcleodgunj, it is easy to find shared and personal cabs for Dharamkot.

For those who are self-driving, it is an easy two and a half-hour drive from Pathankot, in Punjab. The road remains pretty good in shape throughout the year.

For those who are travelling in winter and worried about driving in snow, let me tell them there’s no chance of finding snow until Dharamshala. From Dharamshala to Dharamkot (6km) it is possible to find patches of snow and a bit of slit on the way. The entire Triund trek, moreover, gets about 1-2 feet snow in winter (particularly between January and February). Trekking in winter is very different from that of trekking in summer.

It is possible to find hotels (of every budget) in Dharamshala, Mcleodgunj as well as Dharamkot.

triund trek

Is Triund Trek Open in July and August

Yes. It remains open the entire year, however, trekking during monsoon months of July and August is not really advised. Not only the route becomes slightly dangerous it is no fun either.

As far as the question of closing and opening of Triund trek is concerned, be known that it remains open throughout the year, it’s only the matter of convenience and preference (of the weather).

As long as you’re crossing the checkpoint at Gallu Devi Temple before 11:30 am, you’re good to trek 365 days of the year.

Best Time To Do Triund Trek

The best time to do it is between March and June, and September and November. Many trekkers prefer trekking during winter months too because of snow.

What Makes It One of The Popular Treks In Himachal

I think the fact that one doesn’t need to trek for days (unlike with many treks in Kullu-Manali region ) here, tourists can enjoy the idea of being on top of the world in just a matter of 4-5 hours.

The top point gives tourists a sweeping panoramic view of Kangara valley with Dharamshala, Mcleodgunj and Dharamkot being clearly visible on one side. On a clear day, it is possible to see as far as the international cricket stadium (and much beyond it) in Dharamshala.

It is also possible to see Moon peak, Indrahar Pass, Rifle Horn and Arthur’s seat in the opposite direction.

himachal pradesh

What To Expect On The Way To The Top

A lot of beauty and cliff stones for Insta-perfect photos. A part of the trek also passes through the pine forest — the cliched Himachali landscape. During Spring and Summer season, trekkers also enjoy rhododendrons in their full-bloom.

In short, Triund trek can be described as ‘starting from a Buddhist town, trekking through a lush green forest and arriving at the end of the tree line — with a grand opening of the ridge’.

Sunsets are another reason to visit Triund for. It is because of the sunset that many trekkers also plan to stay overnight camping at the ridge. But those who choose to return also get to see the sunset (even if they miss it on the top and return a little early) at a few points on the way.

triund trek blog

It is also worth seeing Dharamkot on the way back, after sunset.

dharamkot night photo

Useful Factual Information

Dharamkot is the base to start the trek of Triund.

It is also possible to start from Mcleodgunj as well as from Bhagsu village but the total distance will be a little longer, comparatively.

The trail from Dharamkot is, moreover, not only shorter but more picturesque too.

Here’s what the figures say

  • Dharamkot to Gallu Checkpoint: 800 m
  • Gallu Checkpoint to Magic View Cafe: 2.70 km
  • Magic View Cafe to Triund Top: 2.10km
  • Total distance: 5.60 km
  • Total Time: 4-5 hours to reach the top. 2-3 hours to return to Dharamkot

Again, as mentioned above, start as early as possible so that you can spend most of the time of the day on the top. The first half of the trek up faces the sun. Though there are a few points where you can fill the water, it is still advised to carry a water bottle.

trekking essentials

Carry a few eatables too if you don’t want to spend 150 Rupees for a Maggie and 80 Rupees for a half-litre Pepsi. Almost everything is sold at double the MRP because those who are selling have to carry everything on ponies or by using human porters (and hence pay the extra price)

Please note that your backpacks may be checked at Gallu Checkpoint for the amount of plastic you are carrying and will be checked again while you return back. Ensure you carry them back and trek responsibly. Trekkers are often fined if found carrying any drugs or alcohol.

There are no charges to be paid at the checkpoint, however, your ID card will be asked for and your details will be logged into a book.

Please also note that it can be quite cold on the top, regardless of the weather, with high winds making it a little hard for most tourists to spend a lot of time in the open.

triund trek

During the summer season, expect the day temperatures to be around 16 to 25 degrees on the way with the top point having around 10 degrees. During the night, it can drop to 5 to 8 degrees.

Between September to December expect the temperatures to start dropping. The day temperatures will be fairly pleasant with the night temperature dropping to as low as 1 or 2 degrees. Again, high wind makes the temperature feel a few degrees colder.

Useful Things To Carry

Unlike earlier, it is not allowed to camp on your own at Triund (though many trekkers still carry a tent, do it and risk being caught).

Earlier, when camping was allowed on top, it was necessary to carry a tent that can withstand high wind, in addition to a sleeping bag that can feel comfortable at 0 degrees. A light foam mat was also recommended.

Since there are no washroom or toilet facilities on the Triund trek, carry basic toiletry too.

Here is a more concrete list of things to take with you…

Trekking shoes: Even though it is an easy trek, it demands walking on a Himalayan trail. Having said that it is absolutely necessary to wear comfortable trekking shoes. I’m currently writing a detailed guide on how to choose the right trekking shoes.

A Small Backpack (20-30 litres): A backpack with sturdy straps and a supporting frame. Rain cover for backpack is essential. Carry essentials like a few energy bars, a water bottle, shades and other things of personal necessity.

High-Altitude Medication : Though Triund Top is located at only about 2800m above sea level if you feel dizzy and breathlessness on high altitude and windy areas, carry an Acetazolamide.

A Windcheater or A Light Hoodie (in summer): Since it is cold and quite windy on the top please carry something that you can wear on top and not feel dizzy. Oxygen level on top can also be a little

Woollens (in winter) : In winter, the temperature during day time can feel less than 10 degrees in Dharamkot. On Triund Top, it can be about 0 degrees. So carry enough woollens.

Other Necessary Accessories : Sunglasses, a suncap, hand gloves, Balaclava, a headlamp (if you intend to see the sunset), a trekking pole (for first-timer trekkers).

That’s all in the travel blog on Triund Trek. If you have more suggestions to add, please leave a comment below. If you have any questions to ask, please connect on Instagram .

triund trek blog

Are you always on the lookout for new experiences? Do mountains have a special place in your heart? Is it your dream to tour the world? If you answered yes to all of these questions, then let's get your spirits up and experience the magnificent Triund trek. Triund Trek is one of the simplest and most well-known treks in India, located in the Dhauladhar range. It is the ideal place for folks embarking on their first hike since it provides excitement while maintaining small distances and inclined trails. In this article, we will be covering all the important details about the Triund trek - like the Triund trek cost, the Triund trek package, Triund trek booking requirements, Triund trek height, Triund trek time, and much more.

Introduction

Triund trek is one of the shortest and simplest Himalayan treks, offering breathtaking scenery and a magnificent vista of the snow-capped Dhauladhar peaks and Kangra valley. This two-day hike may easily be completed over the weekend. The Triund trek allows us to experience the Himalayas' beauty and tranquility. Although this trek is brief, it will provide you with a sense of adventure due to the trail's steepness at times.

Views of the whole Dhauladhar range, as well as the huge, lush green meadows, provide a dreamlike experience that draws countless trekkers searching for a moderate-to-easy weekend trek. The 18-kilometer trek begins at Dharamkot and is marked by a well-defined track. If this is your first time trekking, it is recommended that you hire a guide/tour operator because the routes pass through dense woods of rhododendron and deodar, which, despite their beauty, may be a little confusing. The trek takes a maximum of six hours, depending on your pace, and there is a large flat space where you may pitch a tent and acclimate if you plan to go higher.

The beautiful Dhauladhar range may be seen towering over the area from the summit of Triund Hill. If you want to see snow, go in January, and if you want to see stunning and clear views of the huge forest and mountain ranges, go in March-May. It's roughly a half-hour drive from Dharamshala.
