A beginner’s guide to Marella Cruises

tui marella cruises cruise control

This is a guest post by cruise and travel bloggers Paul and Carole from Paul and Carole Love to Travel . You can find more links to their website and social media channels, at the end of this post.

We have now cruised 13 times and 2 out of our last 3 cruises have been with Marella Cruises (formerly Thomson Cruises). We had previously discounted them due to the ships being older, smaller, and not having the glitz and glamour that we had been used to with RCL and Celebrity. However, it was due to our friends persistent recommendations that we took our first Marella cruise and we are so glad we did.

Marella Celebration

Marella Cruises have some fantastic itineraries to choose from, each varied and interesting and we loved the fact that our cruises had 6 – 7 ports in 7 days, in comparison with other cruise companies that were only offering 3-4 ports in 7 days at the same time.  Our Greece and Adriatic itineraries were superb. New itineraries have recently come out for Asia which is one of our favourite parts of the world to visit, so that is very exciting!

If we have the choice, we would now choose an adult only cruise and Marella Cruises do offer these. However, they also cater really well for families with their kids clubs which have won awards in the past.

We are British and as soon as we were on board we loved the familiar Britishness. We have cruised on different cruise lines but for us having familiar customs, the British sense of humour and the overall polite mentality, really works for us.

On board entertainment

There are no huge theatres on board but the entertainment offered by Marella Cruises compares very well with other companies. The standard of singing and dancing was excellent and shows were varied. We never saw the same show twice, something other companies don’t do so well. The variety of duos and bands such as Top Men, have been the best we have seen and the old school British comedians have had us in hysterics. We liked the fact that the singers and dancers interacted and mingled with the passengers too.

One thing we noticed cruising with Marella Cruises, is that the officers were very visual around the ship. Not just at the organised events, but throughout the cruise. This was great to see and we had some very interesting conversations and insights into life on board.

Mistrals speciality dining

We enjoyed Marella’s freedom style dining, sometimes just having a table for 2 and at other times joining other guests for an interesting dinner. Choosing your time to eat in the main dining room was also a great option. We were not tied to a time which we really liked.

The afternoon tea was exceptional and was offered free everyday, whereas some other cruise lines do charge extra for this.

We found the quality of the food excellent throughout, with a fantastic selection of British and international foods on offer. If you’re craving your British sausages, black pudding and good baked beans then you can have this. Our experience in the speciality restaurant Mistrals was superb, the meal we experienced was fine dining at its best.

Paul having breakfast in the Lido

Marella Cruises have one of the cheapest all inclusive cruise drinks packages out there. It is very reasonable. We paid £25 and it included a really good selection of drinks. An optional upgrade was available for £10 a day if you wanted bottled beers, particularly wines and top end spirits.

The entertainment team were very engaging and we had many fun afternoons by the pool. However, if you wanted peace and quiet there were always plenty of places where you can find this. This is also the first time we didn’t experience sunbed hogging. Passengers seemed to remove their towels when they were not using the beds which was so refreshing after experiencing selfish behaviour on other cruise lines.

Carole by the pool

The Dream and the Celebration have aft swimming pools and plenty of deck space to enjoy the views, we really liked this. They also have promenade decks which wrap around the ship, something unfortunately some of the newer ships do not have. This was our favourite place to sit, just the two of us, watching the sun go down over the ocean. This is definitely our favourite time of the day.

The comfort and service we received on board was very good. Our cabin service was spectacular on every occasion. As soon as we were in our cabin, our stateroom attendant introduced themselves and showed us around. We were on first name terms from then on and it really was a personalised service right from the start. We had towel animals in our cabin most days, which always made us smile.

Gratuities are always a contentious issue and Marella Cruises takes this stress away as tips and service charges are all included in your cruise price. We always tip on top to those that have given exceptional service, but that is a personal choice.

Promenade Deck

We are not lovers of formal nights but they do happen on Marella Cruises. However if you do not want to partake in the formalities, then there are plenty of other places to go.

We understand that there is now a Navigate App on some of the Marella Cruises ships which enables you to book speciality restaurants, treatments and excursions which also shows that, even though the Marella ships may be older, they are engaging with up to date technology and are moving with the times.

Sunset at sea

We have been trying to think about how Marella Cruises could be improved, but it is difficult to decide what to change without them becoming the same as other mainstream cruise companies, and ultimately losing their identity. If you love a balcony then the older ships that we have cruised on (the Dream and Celebration) do not have a large numbers of balcony cabins. If that is important to you, then you would need to book early. For first time cruisers Marella is a great choice as it is very relaxed and informal and the ships are not huge, so finding your way around is also not too difficult.

We know that we will be cruising with Marella Cruises in the future. Their new ships – the Discovery 1 and 2 – are old Royal Caribbean ships and we look forward to experiencing what they have to offer too.

In conclusion, if you are looking for the glitz or gimmicks that are found on the newer ships – or a more cosmopolitan European experience – then then you will be disappointed with Marella Cruises. But if you are after a great British cruise experience, then you will not be disappointed!

We are going on the explorer for the first time cruising if anyone can give us any advise we would be grateful

Hi Dianne, We have not cruised on the Explorer as yet but do plan to in the future. Is there any particular advise that you are after that we could source for you? Carole.

Anything really not having cruised before it is all new to us. We are going all inclusive as we do on all our holidays. It’s dress code really not sure what to take also trips organised by the ship are they more expensive than if we do them before we go

We had one formal night on our cruises. Some dressed in full Dickie bow and suites, some in just shirt the and trousers all acceptable for dinner. Simple dress or sparkly top and trousers for women is ok too, in fact if you don’t want to partake you don’t have too and just eat at the buffet. We tend to explore ourselves so not sure about the excursions, however we do know that if there is something you really want to do then book it as some excursions do sell out. For more Marella information check out our website link in the post.

Going on our first ever cruise and not sure what to pack and what to expect. We have the premium drinks package even though we aint big drinkers and neither of us what to get dressed up to the 9s . And we have looked at the speciality dining but have been told not to book it up has it does come on the normal menu ? . Also not sure if to book the excursions through TUI or try to do our own thing any advice

Resolved, problem with "Cruise Control".

Cool Cruiser

First time cruisers, we had booked and paid deposit for Marella Explorer 2, Adriatic Delights for October this year. Tried to log into "Cruise Control" to look at excursions etc. but time after time kept getting "Login failed, please check your data and try again". I could access my booking fine through "Manage my Booking" but not Cruise Control. Naturally I'm panicking even though it was 5 months away :-), how will I get my tickets, check in, luggage labels etc., bear in mind I'm used to walking onto Ryanair with hand luggage.

Anyway after emails to customer services, phone call to same and a visit to my local TUI shop all to no avail I decided to go back into Manage my Booking and go through it thoroughly and what did I find but I had omitted to put my wife's date of birth in. Corrected and saved this. Three minutes later got email confirming amendments so tried Cruise Control and yipee de doo dah straight in.

Lesson leaned, never ever forget wife's birthday.  😂 😂

Haha

Marella Explorer Review

tui marella cruises cruise control

Marella Explorer was launched in May 2018 and debuted a number of new-to-the-fleet features, including a link-up with upmarket health spa Champneys (the first at sea), a raft of brand-new restaurants, a gin- and whisky-tasting bar and a large number of new shows.

Familiar facilities, such as The Veranda adults-only terrace and Broadway Show Lounge, are bigger, as is the spa. (However, despite boasting the largest spa in the fleet, there's no indoor pool.)

Aimed squarely at the British market, the vessel is easily manageable for first-timers, with plenty of entertainment for families with kids (despite the fact there is a tiny kids' club) and enough standout and high-end facilities -- including upmarket eateries and a high-tech top-deck disco/bar/casino -- to keep the most seasoned cruisers happy.

Like the fleet as a whole, the ship is billed all-inclusive (in that alcohol and tips are included), and you'll find buckets full of cold beer outside the theatre and on the deck, as well as beer and wine dispensers in the buffet. However, should you wish a more "premium" experience, there is a number of excellent restaurants that carry a cover charge.

Marella inspires loyalty with its long-serving staff and repeat passengers from the line's days as Thomson. The line knows its clientele thoroughly, inside and out -- exactly what they need and want.

And, in the case of this ship, Marella has even anticipated what passengers might not yet know they need or want with a number of first-time additions. This ship is an outstanding addition to the Marella fleet.

Bottom Line

Fellow passengers.

Marella Explorer attracts an exclusively British clientele wherever it is based, whether in the Med during the summer or the Caribbean in the winter. You'd be hard pressed to find any other nationality, and certainly no concession is made for them. The average age is around mid-50s, with multigenerational groups during peak holiday periods. Expect a lot of children onboard from the beginning of July to the beginning of September and over the Christmas holidays.

Marella Explorer Dress Code

The ship is casual during the day -- think shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops -- due to its locations (summer in the Med and winter in the Caribbean). In the evenings, it's smart casual. One night on a seven-night cruise is "Dress to Impress" night, which has replaced gala evenings or formal nights. There's no real guidance on this, though most people opt for a jacket and smart trousers or (non-ripped) jeans for men and a dress and perhaps heels for women.

You wont be surprised to know I,m confused.com

The negative test certificate,do you have to present this pre boarding as well as airport check in?

Pensioncruiser

Sorry I can't help but chin up mate 🤗 you will sort it.

😁 I,ll need to as unlikely to get the answer from TUI  😉

Saying that,by the time we go it may no longer be a requirement

When we went to Malaga last October we had to show the negative cert, NHS vaccination proof, and Spain passenger locater form at the uk and Spanish airport + passport.

At the port before boarding it was the same documents plus proof of comprehensive cruise insurance with covid cover.

keep well 😉

Thanks

Knew I,d get the answer on here, thanks for that  😁 ,

Thankfully the locater form is no longer necessary and hopeful LFT might be gone  by the time we go

While I,ve got you B

1)If LFT is still a requirement how long before travel is best to order them?

2)What exactly is comprehensive cruise insurance?

We have our WW travel  insurance with cruise cover through our Nationwide flex account

1 hour ago, Jim The Scot said:   Hi Jim. We ordered our lateral flow tests from Chronomics about three weeks before we were due to sail. When you order online with them they ask for your booking number and the date when you are flying and they get them to you at least  two days before before you need them.   Not really sure what comprehensive cruise cover is to be honest. My policy includes cruise cover and the cruise part covers as follows……   Missed port departure Cabin confinement Unused cruise excursions Cruise interruption Sports and activities Enhanced COVID-19 cover   We printed out the page which states Cruise cover included and highlighted the Enhanced COVID-19 cover and this was accepted no problem. Hope this helps

Thanks B your a star

Tried a dummy ordering of LFT test kits and issue we have is chronomics not recognising my booking number but dont know if its because its a while before our cruise.I,ll wait till nearer the time and try

Thanks regards insurance, will check our policy

you’re welcome.

keep well. 👍

That's strange that you can't order your LFT kits, We are away next tue 26 April and I ordered two kits last night (14 April) no problem to be delivered tomorrow.  The reason that I left it so late to order my kits was because I was hoping they might drop the need to test anyway. (this test is a Marella cruise thing)

Hope you get sorted. 👍

I am experiencing other weird things with cruise control:

I've actually printed out my boarding passes - but the menu says "Locked - please complete your travel information and take covid survey" ???, so won't let me print them again.

The Luggage tag menu says "Your luggage labels are ready" but when I access this menu item  is says " Cabin allocation has not yet finished, please try again later." Which is a bit odd as there are only 15 outside solo cabins.

Do I actually need luggage labels, will they attach them at the airport ??

That’s almost exactly what happened to us. I was told by marella it was a known issue. They would give me labels at either airport or embarkation. I made our own. They were perfectly adequate if you know your cabin number. If not they take them to reception in ship from where you can fetch them.  Our labels were readable andthat was all they were concerned with. It was odd though a good quarter had home made labels.

Not strange to me B.Had numerous issues with accessing anything to do with my booking since we had to amend our booking in February from a cruise and 4 day stay to a cruise and 3 day stay because  TUI cancelled the  cruise and 4 day stay as were dropping the inbound flight.Intially we were TUI flights outbound and inbound but now BA outbound and TUI inbound and thats when the issue began.

On view my bookings via my account it shows my past bookings and our American cruise booking for 2023 but not our cruise in July

Ths only portal I,ve had success with eventually was flight extras to select my seats and assistance at the airport and that was only down to help from a customer adviser in a nearby TUI store 2 weeks ago, this was after 5 phone calls to TUI  in an attempt to resolve my issue.I had 5 different reasons why I was having problems and 5 different work arounds. They were as much good as a chocolate fireguard

Anyway,11 weeks before we go and hoping by time we go the test will have been dropped.

Have a great time on your cruise B

I feel your pain Jim.

I have always said that the admin side of TUI is woefully inept, It's hard to believe that the crew onboard are working for the same company as they are so good at their jobs.

Good luck anyways.

And thanks. 😉

Marella Cruises (formerly Thomson Cruises) is a British cruise line operated by TUI UK, offering cruise holidays around Europe, the Caribbean, and Asia. The company had initially entered the cruise market in 1973, but due to rising fuel costs the venture was terminated in 1976. In 1995, Thomson restarted their cruise line after their competitor Airtours had made a successful entry in the cruise business under their Sun Cruises brand. On 9 October 2017, TUI Group announced that Thomson Cruises would be rebranded in late October 2017 as Marella Cruises, with all of the existing Thomson fleet adopting the name change either from Thomson or TUI to Marella (except Thomson Spirit which will be renamed Spirit and Thomson Majesty which will be transferred to Celestyal Cruises). The line also announced that it would base TUI Discovery in Asia for the Winter season of 2018, with the ship being based out of Malaysia, the first in the line's history. In 2012, Marella Cruises holds approximately a 1% market share of the worldwide cruise industry. In May 2021, with the cruise sector planning for revival following the COVID-19 pandemic, TUI were reported to be planning to merge Marella Cruises with their TUI Cruises joint venture with Royal Caribbean, as they had already done with Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.

Marella Cruises runs first ‘trade-wide’ booking incentive

  • Share by email

The first ‘trade-wide’ booking incentive by Marella Cruises is offering 25 places for agents on a Caribbean sailing.

The ‘Make it on Marella’ trade promotion will see winning agents take a cruise from the Tui line’s new home port of La Romana in the Dominican Republic.

The top 20 agents, plus five ‘wild card’ agent places, will win a trip onboard adults-only ship Marella Explorer 2.

The seven-night itinerary departs on March 11, 2025, with calls at St Maarten, Dominica, Antigua, British Virgin Islands and Samana, Dominican Republic.

To enter, agents need to submit their own Marella Cruises package bookings on a digital form. A leaderboard will be created by the line to ensure agents are aware of their placements.

The incentive runs from today (Wednesday) until December 31.

Winning agents will receive the full end-to-end service from Marella Cruises with flights, transfers and tips included, and an all-inclusive treatment as standard to sample the food and drink options onboard.

The trip will be hosted by representatives of Marella Cruises and Tui.

Marella Cruises managing director Chris Hackney said: “We are thrilled to be offering 25 incentive places aboard the Marella Explorer 2 in 2025.

“It’s important to us that we give our trusted travel agents a unique trip to immerse themselves in the product whilst also experiencing one of our new Caribbean homeports for 2025 in La Romana, Dominican Republic.”

Marella Cruises Cancels Middle East and Asia Itineraries

  • April 22, 2024

Marella Discovery 2

Marella Cruises informed its guests that the entire season of Middle East and Asia itineraries are now cancelled due to the conflict in the Red Sea.

“For the safety of our customers and crew, we can confirm that due to the ongoing conflict in the Red Sea area, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our Asia and Middle East program between November 1, 2024 – April 30, 2025,” the company said in a statement.

“We appreciate how disappointing this news will be and therefore all impacted customers will be contacted by their booking agent to discuss the options available to them. Options include being able to rebook with a £200 per person reduction or receive a full refund.”

The British cruise line is currently rerouting the Marella Discovery 2, which has been based in Singapore during the winter season. The ship is currently sailing around Africa instead of via the Red Sea. This resulted in canceling Discovery’s repositioning cruise from Asia to Europe, as well as the winter 2024-25 program in Asia.

Marella Cruises is yet to announce where the ship will be based during the winter 2024-25 season.
