Read more: Official List of Countries that are allowed to enter Turkey with their ID-Card (without Passport).

For most countries, your passport should be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Turkey.

In addition, it should have a full blank page for the entry and exit stamp.

How long can I stay with a Tourist Visa in Turkey

How Long Can I Stay in Turkey with a Tourist Visa?

The length of time you can stay in Turkey depends on the citizenship on your passport. It can vary between 30 and 90 days .

Citizens from most European countries are able to travel without a visa for visits of up to 90 days within a 180-day period .

This means that a maximum of 180 days is possible in one year.

Note that  visa runs are no longer possible  to renew your tourist visa. Therefore, leaving Turkey and reentering does not reset the 90 days within the 180 day limit.

Most tourists are granted a "multiple-entry visa", which allows them to enter and leave the country as long as their visa is valid. There are also "single entry visas ", which allow only one entry to the country.

Travelers who want to stay longer than 90 days can apply for a “ Short Term Residence Permi t ” at the Local Immigration Offices (Provincial Directorate of Migration Administration).

Please note, if you stay longer than your tourist visa allows, you risk a fine and deportation .

E-Visa, Visa at the Land Border or Visa from an Embassy in Antalya in Turkey

E-Visas, Visas upon Arrival, and Visas from an Embassy

From most countries, it's possible to easily obtain an e-Visa online. The e-Visa application only takes a few minutes .

After filling out the online form and paying the visa fee, you will receive your visa within 3 days . For urgent applications, you will get an e-mail with your e-Visa in about 14 minutes.

We recommend that you use the official Turkish government site for this purpose. Note that government sites are always recognizable by the suffix ".gov".

See if you are eligible for an E-Visa.

Visa upon arrival:

Some citizens may obtain a  visa upon arrival at a Turkish airport .  However, tourists who need a visa are strongly advised to apply for an e-visa before their trip, as there are fewer and fewer Turkish airports with visa application centers.

In addition, the fees charged by the official e-Visa website are lower than the fees for visas obtained upon arrival at Turkish airports.

See if you can obtain a visa on arrival.

Turkish Embassy or Consulate:

You can also contact the Turkish Embassy or Consulate in your country to obtain a Turkish visa.

For this type of application, it is best to start applying at least one month before the date of travel and already have all the necessary documents prepared.

Enter Turkey with a Car

Entering Turkey with a Car

When entering Turkey by car, in addition to the travel documents already mentioned (passport or ID card, visa if necessary), you must also present these documents at the Turkish land border:

  •  International driving license
  •  License documents for the vehicle
  •  International Green Card and insurance to travel on Turkish roads
  •  Power of attorney (if the vehicle belongs to someone else)

Car Insurance: Please note that the Green Card insurance is usually valid only up to the Bosphorus.

We therefore recommend that you check in advance whether your insurance policy is also valid for the Asian side of the country.

If you need, you can buy valid insurance at border crossings.

Enter Turkey with a Cruise Ship or Yacht

Entering Turkey with a Cruise Ship or Yacht

When entering Turkey by cruise ship, for example in Alanya or Antalya, you do not need to apply for a visa, if you do not stay ashore for more than 72 hours.

We recommend that you ask your tour operator about the necessary documents and current entry requirements.

Health Insurance in Turkey

Health Insurance in Turkey

It's highly recommended to get travel insurance or international health insurance  before traveling to Turkey.

In the event you need emergency medical treatment, as a tourist, you are more likely to be admitted to a private clinic due to the higher standards.

However, healthcare insurance does not usually cover the full costs of private clinics. The difference must be paid out of your own pocket.

For this reason, it's a good idea to purchase travel insurance or international health insurance in advance. Travel insurance is available for as little as 10 euros per person.

Turkey Visa for Tourists: A Complete Guide

Updated: October 19, 2023

Turkey visa on arrival image

Turkey has a liberal visa policy offering visa exemption and e-visas to many nationalities. A Turkey visa is also quite easy to obtain from the embassy or an authorized agent.

Turkey has introduced e-Visa to simplify its visa application process and replace its Visa on Arrival. Currently, 30 nationalities can obtain a Turkey e-Visa from the comfort of their homes. 21 nationalities can also obtain an e-Visa if holding a visa or residence permit from any Schengen country, US, UK or Ireland.

Many nationalities from the African continent that were previously eligible for e-Visas were unfortunately removed from that list recently. They will now have to apply for a Turkey visa through a Turkish mission or an agent.

The passport validity is different for different nationalities. It also depends on whether you are visa-exempt or require a visa.

For nationalities that are visa-exempt, the minimum passport validity required is 60 days beyond your “allowed period of stay” in Turkey. For some, it’s 90 days.

For those who require an e-Visa, VOA or visa from the embassy, the minimum passport validity required is 6 months from the day of arrival. For some, it’s 3 months beyond the validity of their visas.

So in general, you will be fine with 6 months of validity remaining your passport at the time of entering Turkey.

Turkey transit visa requirements

Transit visas are NOT REQUIRED for transiting through Turkish international airports.

If you are not leaving the international transit area, then you do not require a transit visa. But if you have to leave the international transit area, or claim your bags, or change to a different airline, then you would require a transit visa.

Turkey visa requirements for cruise passengers

A Turkey visa is NOT REQUIRED for cruise passengers for up to 72 hours.

Cruise visitors are issued a Harbor City Entry Permit that’s valid for 72 hours and limited to the harbor city where the cruise arrived and its surroundings.

TURKEY VISA ON ARRIVAL

Turkey introduced its e-Visa system in 2013 with the intention of phasing out its Visa on Arrival. But VOA is still available and a few countries that are eligible for e-Visa are also eligible for obtaining VOA at international airports in Turkey.

Even though the e-Visa takes only a few minutes to apply, the VOA fee is considerably lower than the e-Visa fee for certain nationalities. It makes sense to simply get a VOA instead of an e-Visa if you are eligible and the fee is lower.

Validity of Turkey Visa on Arrival

Visa on Arrival is valid for 90 days, with multiple entries. Total stay cannot be more than 90 days in a 180-day period.

How long can you stay in Turkey with Visa on Arrival

Turkey Visa on Arrival is valid for 90 days. That means, if you continue to stay in Turkey after you have obtained your Visa on Arrival, you can stay up to 90 days. But if you leave and come back, you can only stay until your Visa on Arrival expiration date.

Also, your total stay in Turkey cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.

  • Your arrival date in Turkey is March 10
  • You obtained VOA on March 10
  • Your visa is valid from 10 March 2022 to 08 June 2022 (90 days)
  • After 45 days, on 24 April 2022, you left Turkey.
  • You entered Turkey again on 19 May 2022 using your previous VOA. You can only stay till 08 June 2022, which is 21 days.

Visa on Arrival application process

The VOA process is quite quick at airports in Turkey. Right before the immigration or passport control, you will see a section called “Visa”. Stop by there and get your visa on arrival.

For obtaining VOA, all you need is your passport and visa on arrival fee in USD, EUR or GBP. Some nationalities require a passport-size photo.

Documents required

You must present the following documents.

  • Passport that’s valid for at least 6 months from the day of arrival in Turkey
  • Cash in USD, EUR or GBP for visa fee payment

The Visa on Arrival (VOA) fee starts from $30 and goes up all the way to $70 USD depending on nationality. Below is the Visa on Arrival fee for all eligible nationalities.

Processing time

It usually takes a few minutes for the Visa on Arrival process. But it depends on how busy the Visa on Arrival section is.

TURKEY E-VISA

Turkey e-Visa - Step-by-step guide

Turkey introduced its e-Visa portal in 2013 to help visitors obtain visas from the comfort of their homes. Today, 51 countries are eligible for Turkey e-Visa .

Of these 51 countries, 30 nationalities can apply for e-Visa with just their passports. And 21 nationalities can apply for an e-Visa only if holding a US visa , UK visa , Schengen visa or Ireland visa or a residence permit from any of those countries.

E-visa approval is immediate and it only takes 5 minutes to obtain the e-Visa.

Validity of Turkey e-Visa

The validity of the Turkey e-Visa is 180 days from the “arrival date” that you’ve selected in your e-Visa application.

Can I visit Turkey without a visa?

Possibly, it depends on your nationality and the purpose of your trip. Here’s what you need to consider:

  • Visa-Exempt Countries: Turkey allows citizens of certain countries to visit visa-free for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
  • E-Visa Option: If your country isn’t visa-exempt, you might be eligible for an electronic visa (e-Visa) instead. This is a convenient option that allows you to apply online without visiting a Turkish embassy or consulate.

Can I get a visa on arrival to Turkey?

Yes, in some cases you can get a visa on arrival in Turkey. However, it’s not guaranteed and generally not recommended compared to an e-Visa for a few reasons:

  • Eligibility:  Visa on arrival is only available to citizens of specific countries, while the e-Visa program applies to a wider range of nationalities.
  • Convenience:  Obtaining a visa on arrival involves filling out forms and waiting in line at the immigration counter upon reaching Turkey. An e-Visa allows you to apply online beforehand, saving you time and hassle at the airport.
  • Uncertain Approval:  Turkish authorities might deny your visa on arrival application, which could lead to delays or even being turned away. An approved e-Visa guarantees your entry into Turkey.

What are the benefits of having a Turkey eVisa?

There are several benefits to having a Turkey eVisa, making your trip to Turkey much more convenient:

  • Convenience: The biggest advantage is the ease of application. You can apply from anywhere with an internet connection, skipping visits to embassies or consulates.
  • Speed: The processing time is quick, with most eVisas issued within 24-48 hours.
  • Accessibility: The online application system is available 24/7, allowing you to apply at your convenience.
  • Cost-effective: While there is a fee, it’s generally less expensive than traditional visa applications.
  • Flexibility: Depending on your travel plans, you can choose between single-entry or multiple-entry visas.
  • Security: Despite the simplified process, the eVisa system uses strong security measures to protect your information.

Do I need a Turkey eVisa if I’m on a cruise ship?

You might not need a Turkey eVisa if you’re visiting Turkey on a cruise ship,  but it depends on two key factors:

  • Duration of your stay: If your cruise ship visit lasts no more than 72 hours (3 days) and you stay within the city where the ship docks, you generally don’t require an eVisa.
  • Venturing beyond the port city: If you plan to explore beyond the port city limits or your stay exceeds 72 hours, you most likely will need a Turkey eVisa (or a regular visa if your nationality isn’t eligible for eVisas).

Should I obtain a visa if I already hold a resident permit in Turkey?

No, you generally don’t need to obtain a visa if you already hold a valid residence permit in Turkey.  A residence permit serves as your legal authorization to stay in Turkey, eliminating the need for an additional visa for most purposes.

Can I be denied entry into Turkey with an eVisa?

Yes, even with a valid eVisa, it is possible to be denied entry into Turkey.  Here are some reasons why this could happen:

  • Invalid Travel Documents: This includes having an eVisa that doesn’t exactly match your passport information (misspelled name, wrong date of birth, etc.), or a passport with insufficient validity (less than six (6) months remaining).
  • Security Concerns: If Turkish authorities have reason to believe you pose a security risk, they can deny entry. This could be based on a criminal record, suspected involvement in terrorism, or anything else raising red flags.
  • Health Concerns: If you appear to be sick or contagious upon arrival, immigration officials might deny entry to prevent the spread of illness.
  • Insufficient Funds: While there’s no set amount required, immigration officials might deny entry if you cannot demonstrate you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in Turkey.
  • Inconsistencies with Application: If the information you provided in your eVisa application doesn’t match what you tell immigration officials upon arrival (different purpose of visit, longer stay planned than indicated, etc.), it could raise suspicions and lead to denial.
  • Violations on Previous Visits: If you violated Turkish immigration laws during a prior visit (overstaying your visa or working illegally), you might be denied entry.

Is it necessary for me to obtain an additional Turkey eVisa for those accompanying me?

Yes, everyone traveling to Turkey must obtain a separate eVisa, including any people you are accompanying. The Turkish eVisa system treats each traveler individually, regardless of whether you are applying with family or friends.

Do I need a visa if I don’t leave the international transit area?

No, you generally don’t need a visa if you  won’t leave the international transit area at a Turkish airport.

Can I use my international passport instead of an eVisa to enter Turkey?

No, an international passport alone is not enough to enter Turkey for most nationalities in most situations.

  • Visa Requirements: Turkey requires visas for most nationalities. An international passport proves your identity and citizenship, but it doesn’t replace a visa, which acts as an official permit to enter the country.
  • Visa Exceptions: There are exceptions for some nationalities. Certain countries have visa-free entry to Turkey, meaning they can enter for a specific period with a valid passport.
  • eVisa as Alternative: For nationalities that require visas, a Turkey eVisa serves as a convenient alternative to a traditional visa obtained through embassies or consulates. It’s an electronic visa obtained online.

Is it possible to work in the country with an eVisa?

No, you cannot work with a Turkish eVisa in Turkey.  The eVisa is designed for tourism and short-term business visits, not for employment.

Regardless of whether you choose a 30-day, 60-day, or 90-day allowed stay duration, all Turkey eVisas have a validity period of 180 days after they are issued. You must enter Turkey within this 180-day window from the issuance date.

What should I do if I want to stay in Turkey longer than the eVisa allows?

Turkish eVisas are designed for shorter stays, and unfortunately,  you cannot extend them once you’re in Turkey.

  • Depart and Re-apply: If you only need a slightly extended stay, say a few extra weeks, the most straightforward option is to depart Turkey before your eVisa expires and then re-apply for a new eVisa online at Visas for Future. There’s a processing fee associated with each application, so you’ll need to pay again. Ensure you factor in the 180-day rule ( 180-Day Rule: There’s a regulation limiting stays on eVisas to a total of 90 days within any 180-day period, starting from your first entry date into Turkey. This applies even if your eVisa itself has a longer validity period. Make sure you factor this rule into your re-entry plans if you choose to depart and re-apply for a new eVisa.)
  • Apply for Residence Permit: If you require a significantly longer stay exceeding 90 days, you cannot use the eVisa system. You’ll need to apply for a short-term residence permit through the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management in Turkey. This process typically involves more paperwork and may require reasons for your extended stay.

When will I receive my Turkey eVisa after completing the application?

The Turkish eVisa website claims to maintain high-security standards for credit card payments. However, it advises that it is not responsible for security vulnerabilities on your device or internet connection.

Can I receive a refund if I don’t use my Turkey eVisa?

No, refunds cannot be issued for unused eVisas. The application fee is non-refundable regardless of whether you use the visa or not.

If my Turkey eVisa application is rejected, will I be given a refund?

No, you won’t be given a refund if your Turkey eVisa application is rejected.

Common Problems of EVisa Application

Where should i enter my middle name since there is no space for it in the “personal information” section.

In the “Given Name(s)” section of the Turkey eVisa application, enter your middle name right after your first name. There should be a space between your first and middle name.

What should I do if the system informs me that my Turkey eVisa application cannot be processed?

If the system rejects your Turkey eVisa application, a specific reason will not be. However, here are some steps you can take:

  • Review Application: Double-check all the information you submitted for any errors or inconsistencies. Pay close attention to typos, especially in your name, date of birth, passport number, and nationality.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Review the eligibility requirements for eVisas on the official Turkish government website ([evisa Turkey]). Ensure your nationality and purpose of visit qualify for an eVisa.
  • Payment Issues: In rare cases, there might be a glitch with the e-payment processing. Verify that your credit card information was entered correctly and that you have sufficient funds.
  • Contact Turkish Authorities: If you’ve reviewed everything and can’t identify the problem, reach out to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the nearest Turkish embassy or consulate. Explain the situation and see if they can offer insights or next steps.

What should I do if I make an error in my passport number on my Turkey visa application?

The course of action depends on whether you applied for a  regular visa   through a Turkish embassy or consulate or a  Turkey eVisa online:

Regular Visa Application:

  • Contact the Embassy/Consulate Immediately:   As soon as you realize the error,  reach out to the Turkish embassy or consulate where you submitted your application. Explain the mistake and inquire about the correction process. They might ask you to submit a new application with the correct information or provide a written statement acknowledging the error.
  • Follow Their Instructions:   The embassy/consulate will have specific procedures for handling application errors. Follow their guidance carefully to ensure a smooth resolution.  There might be additional processing time or fees involved, so be prepared for that possibility.

Turkey eVisa Application:

Unfortunately, the eVisa system doesn’t offer a direct way to edit or correct existing applications . Here are your options:

  • Submit a New Application (if time allows): If your travel dates allow sufficient time, you can submit a new eVisa application with the correct passport number. Each application has a processing fee, so you’ll need to pay again for the new one.
  • Contact Turkish Authorities (if urgent):   If your travel date is approaching soon and resubmitting an application isn’t feasible, consider contacting Turkish authorities directly.  You can try contacting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the nearest Turkish embassy or consulate. Explain the situation and see if they can offer any alternative solutions or guidance.

If the information on my Turkish EVisa doesn’t match the information on my travel document completely, can I still enter Turkey with this eVisa?

No, it’s best to err on the cautious side and avoid traveling to Turkey with a mismatched eVisa. Here’s why:

  • Invalid eVisa: The Turkish government clearly states that any discrepancies between your eVisa and travel document render the eVisa invalid. This means you might be denied entry into Turkey.
  • Travel Delays and Costs: If immigration officials discover the mismatch upon arrival, you could face delays and frustration and possibly be forced to reapply for a visa at the airport, which might incur additional costs.

Here’s what you should do if you discover a mismatch:

  • Contact Turkish Authorities: The recommended course of action is to contact the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the nearest Turkish embassy or consulate as soon as possible. Explain the situation and seek guidance on how to proceed.
  • Apply for a New eVisa: You’ll likely need to submit a new eVisa application with the correct information. This new application will incur a processing fee.

Preventing Mismatches:

  • Double-check information: Before submitting your eVisa application, thoroughly review all the details you enter, ensuring they precisely match your travel document (passport).
  • Proofread meticulously: Pay close attention to any typos or inconsistencies, especially with regard to your name, date of birth, passport number, and nationality.

What should I do if I discover that some of the information in the Turkey eVisa application needs to be corrected?

Unfortunately, the Turkish eVisa system doesn’t allow for correcting existing applications. You must apply for a new eVisa with accurate information if you discover a mistake. The new application will incur a processing fee.

What is the meaning of the CVV/CVC/CVC2 number?

The CVV/CVC/CVC2 number represents the same thing and stands for Card Verification Value or Card Validation Code . It’s a 3-digit (for Visa, Mastercard, Discover) or 4-digit (for American Express) security code located on your credit or debit card.

Useful Advice for Travelers Arriving in Turkey with an eVisa

Before Your Trip:

  • Double-Check Everything:  Ensure you have a valid passport with at least six months validity beyond your intended departure date from Turkey.
  • Print Your eVisa (Optional):  While not mandatory, it’s recommended to print a copy of your eVisa and carry it with you in case immigration officials request it. You can also save a copy on your phone.
  • Download Helpful Apps:  Consider downloading offline translation apps and ride-hailing apps that work in Turkey for easier navigation and communication.
  • Research Local Customs:  Familiarize yourself with basic Turkish greetings and customs to avoid any cultural faux pas.

At Arrival:

  • Have Your Documents Ready:  Keep your passport, eVisa (printed or digital copy), and completed arrival card (if provided) easily accessible for immigration checks.
  • Cash for Convenience:  Carry some Turkish Lira (TRY) in cash for taxis, buses, or small purchases as some places might not accept foreign currency directly. You can exchange currency at the airport or ATMs.

During Your Stay:

  • Respect Local Dress Code:  While Turkey is a modern country, dressing modestly, especially when visiting religious sites, is appreciated.
  • Bargaining is Expected:  In bazaars and some shops, expect a bit of friendly bargaining for goods. Research typical prices beforehand to have a baseline.
  • Tipping is Common:  While not mandatory, tipping waiters, taxi drivers, and service providers is customary. Small change is sufficient.
  • Public Transportation:  Istanbul has a good metro system and trams. Consider purchasing an Istanbulkart for discounted fares on public transportation.

Can I use my ID card as a substitute for a passport to enter Turkey?

No, you cannot use your ID card as a substitute for a passport to enter Turkey for most nationalities. Turkey generally requires a valid passport for entry.

There are a few exceptions:

  • Citizens of Specific Countries: Citizens of a small number of countries, including Germany and Greece, can enter Turkey using their national ID cards, but these must be the new-style cards with information in Latin characters.
  • Direct Flights from Specific Countries: In some cases, citizens of countries bordering Turkey might be allowed to enter with their ID cards if they are arriving on a direct flight from that country. However, this is not a guaranteed option and it’s best to confirm with the nearest Turkish embassy or consulate before relying on this method.

Is it necessary to take a vaccine before applying for a Turkey eVisa?

No, being vaccinated is not a mandatory requirement for applying for a Turkey eVisa itself. As of October 26, 2023, there is no requirement to show proof of vaccination for entry into Turkey.

Turkish Tourist Visa Tips

Last Updated on May 2, 2019

Important Notes

• The rules below are for  tourist visas .  Click here  for info on visas for  work, study or residence  in Turkey .

• There are normally  two types of tourist visas . A  single-entry  (tek giriş)  visa  allows you to enter Turkey once. After you leave, no matter how long you’ve stayed in Turkey, you must pay for another visa to enter Turkey again.

A  multiple-entry  (müteaddit giriş)   visa  allows you to enter and leave Turkey multiple times within its period of validity (normally 30, 60, or 90 days) at no additional charge.

• You may obtain  e-visas  online  from an official  Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website , paying by credit card. More…

Pursuant to Turkish government regulations instituted on January 12, 2012, “ 90-day tourist visa ” means that you can visit Turkey for up to 90 days  within any 180-day period . This means that, after staying in Turkey 90 days,  you cannot simply cross the border into another country, stay outside of Turkey for a day or two, then re-enter Turkey on a new 90-day tourist visa . Instead, you must apply in advance at a Turkish consulate for a  residence visa  and, when you arrive in Turkey, you must apply for a  residence permit   (İkamet Tezkeresi).

If you’re coming to Turkey for a short tour of, say, a few weeks, and not returning to Turkey in the near future, this restriction would not affect you. But if you come to Turkey for long periods (several months) frequently, you may be affected.

The regulations are meant to restrict foreigners who are, in effect, living in Turkey for part of the year but have not applied for a residence permit as required. Waivers are granted to certain groups, such as retirees who spend part of the year in Turkey, or foreigners who own property in Turkey and come to live for part of each year.

Official Passports

The term “ official passports ” covers diplomatic, service, special and official passports. You probably have an “ordinary” passport unless you’re going to Turkey on diplomatic, military or other official business. Visa rules for official passports may differ from those for ordinary passports.

Apply for Your Visa in Advance!

All foreigners who need visas may apply for them to  Turkish diplomatic missions . If you do this, apply at least a month before your departure date for Turkey. But if you’re a citizen of one of those countries allowed to  get a visa online in advance , why spend time filling out paper forms months in advance?  More…

Visas for Filmmakers & Researchers

Foreigners who intend to  shoot documentary films , to  conduct research , or to do  archeological excavation , should apply for special permission in advance from the Turkish authorities.

Visas for Truck Drivers

Visa requirements for  truck drivers  may be different. Contact a  Turkish consulate .

Questions & Comments

You can send comments and questions to the Visa section of Turkey’s  Ministry of Foreign Affairs  at  [email protected]  . (I cannot help you with questions on official visa matters—I am not a Turkish diplomat!)

What is Reciprocity?

Nonimmigrant visa applicants from certain countries*/areas of authority may be required to pay a visa issuance fee after their application is approved. These fees are based on the principle of  reciprocity:  when a foreign government imposes fees on U.S. citizens for certain types of visas, the United States will impose a reciprocal fee on citizens of that country*/area of authority for similar types of visas.

How Do I Find Out if I Have to Pay a Reciprocity Fee?

To view the Reciprocity Page for your country* of nationality, select your country*/area of authority from the list of countries on the left side menu. On the Reciprocity Page, select the Visa Classifications tab from the column on the left

Select the type of visa you have applied for, such as a B-1/B-2 (temporary visa for business or pleasure), F-1 (student visa), etc. from the drop down menu:

The reciprocity information for that country*/area of authority will display:

What does this table tell me?

Visa Classification:  The type of nonimmigrant visa you are applying for.

Fee:  The reciprocity fee, also known as the visa issuance fee, you must pay. This fee is in addition to the nonimmigrant visa application fee (MRV fee).

Number of Entries:  The number of times you may seek entry into the United States with that visa. “M” means multiple times. If there is a number, such as “One”, you may apply for entry one time with that visa.

Validity Period:  This generally means the visa is valid, or can be used, from the date it is issued until the date it expires, for travel with that visa. If your Validity Period is 60 months, your visa will be valid for 60 months from the date it is issued.

What is the Difference between the Reciprocity Fee and the Nonimmigrant Visa Application Fee?

The nonimmigrant visa application fee, also known as the MRV fee, is a nonrefundable fee paid by most applicants for U.S. visas, whether the application is approved or refused. It covers the costs associated with processing a U.S. visa application. Current nonimmigrant visa application fees can be found on our  Fees – Visa Services  webpage. (This webpage also lists the few visa categories for which application fees are not required.)

While most visa applicants are required to pay the visa application fee, the Reciprocity Fee is only charged to an approved nonimmigrant visa applicant after the visa interview.

Immigrant Visa Interviews

For Immigrant Visa interviews each U.S. Embassy or Consulate has specific instructions for their applicants. Please click here to select your designated interview location.

Civil Documents and How to Use Them

Immigrant visa applicants are required to submit certain civil documents as part of their visa application, such as birth certificates and police records. (Nonimmigrant visa applicants do not routinely need to submit civil documents as part of their visa application.) Each Reciprocity Page will provide detailed information about how to obtain these civil documents from the country* you have selected, as well as the location of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you can apply for your visa. For more information about civil document requirements for immigrant visa cases, see  civil documents .

To view the Civil Documents for your country* of nationality, select your country*/area of authority from the drop-down menu below. On the Reciprocity Page, click on the tabs on the left to see the categories of Civil Documents and how to obtain them.

* With respect to all references to “country” or “countries” on this page, it should be noted that the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, Pub. L. No. 96-8, Section 4(b)(1), provides that “[w]whenever the laws of the United States refer or relate to foreign countries, nations, states, governments, or similar entities, such terms shall include and such laws shall apply with respect to Taiwan.” 22 U.S.C. § 3303(b) (1). Accordingly, all references to “country” or “countries” in the Visa Waiver Program authorizing legislation, Section 217 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, 8 U.S.C. 1187, are read to include Taiwan. This is consistent with the United States’ one-China policy, under which the United States has maintained unofficial relations with Taiwan since 1979.
