godsmack tour 1998

Godsmack have regularly ramped up their live shows with dueling drum battles, lights and pyrotechnics — and now the multi-platinum hard rock band from Massachusetts are reinventing themselves yet again for the acoustic-heavy 2024 Vibez Tour .

The North American trek offers a different side of Godsmack, starting with an expanded concert lineup of frontman Sully Erna, guitarist Tony Rombola, bassist Robbie Merrill, drummer Shannon Larkin, and longtime collaborators Tim Theriault (guitar) and Chris Decato (keys). Danish solo artist Bastian Da Cruz also takes his first trip with the band as the tour’s opener.

Although Erna confirmed that 2023’s Lighting Up the Sky would be Godsmack’s final studio album, the band has quickly shown fans that they are nowhere close to riding off into the sunset as a touring act. With reworked classics and covers of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and more, the band is sure to thrill fans as they enter their most ambitious and experimental live era yet.

Godsmack is an American alternative metal/hard rock American band originally from Lawrence, Massachusetts. The current lineup consists of Sully Ema, Robbie Merrill, Tony Rombola and Shannon Larkin.

In February 1995, Sully Ema decided to start a band with Lee Richards on guitar, Robbie Merrill on bass and Tommy Stewart on drums, which they initially called The Scam. The name didn’t stick long, as they changed the name to Godsmack after they recorded their first demo. In 1996 Richards and Stewart left the band and were replaced by Tony Rombola and Joe D’Arco. For a few years the band would tour up and down the east coast, until in 1998 they signed with Universal/Republic Records.

In a mere six weeks later, the replaced D’Arco with former drummer Tommy Stewart and released their eponymous album; this was then followed by a series of shows and tours around America and Europe. The album was met with success, reaching certified gold by 2011. In 2000 they returned to the studio to record “Awake” which was later released in October. “Awake” reached four-times platinum, and the single “Vampire” garnered a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2002.

In 2003, Stewart once again left the band, due to personal reasons, and was replaced by Shannon Larkin. The following record “Faceless” went on to sell over a million copies along with a massive sold out tour with Metallica. In 2007 the band celebrated their being a band for ten years with the release of “Good Times, Bad Times...Ten Years of Godsmack,” that included a DVD of their live acoustic performance at the House of Blues, Las Vegas.

After taking about a yearlong hiatus, the band reunited to record and release “The Oracle” in 2010. The band headlined the Mayhem Festival, an annual heavy metal festival that travels throughout the United States, followed by a tour with Staind. In 2014 Ema announced that the band was working on new material, and in August they released “1000hp.”

Live reviews

Godsmack: Hard hitting yet hypnotic Many casual listeners/concert goers would chalk this amazing band up to an Alice in Chains clone, but nothing could be further from the truth. True that the sludgy grunge infused sound is reminiscent of such, but Godsmack took it one step further toward the end of the '90's, updating the sound and putting an industrial/nu metal spin on it all their own. One could call it looking back while looking ahead simultaneously; namely transitional as there are turbulent and sludge passages with a modern sound fused with a trippy, hypnotic undercurrent. From Pantera to Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and almost everyone in between, Godsmack's list of influences runs nearly the full gamut as evidenced both in concert and on the record. A true highlight of many performances of theirs I have seen and heard entails a dueling drumming interlude between skins man Shannon Larking and multi-instrumental front man Sully Erna, the latter of whose main instrument was once drums as well. Guitarist Tony Rombola and bassist Robbie Merrill bring heaviness and hard hitting riffs of their own to the table as well which make for a mix of both raucousness and meditativeness, sometimes in separate instances, and other times simultaneously combining them! For me also, the crowning touch the last concert we attended in 2012 was winning our way in to the show complete with a catered lunch and a chance to meet the group with a photo op and signing all included. They were very kind to us and as always were firing on all cylinders once they hit the stage. Kudos to them all the way!

Godsmack, the alt-metal rock band has been touring and recording for twenty years and although it has been a number of years since they performed in London, they left their impression on the crowd. Assured that they have always been a traditional rock band, the stage set up is sparse and the lighting minimal as the group allow themselves and even more importantly the music to take centre stage.

Taking influence from the likes of Alice in Chains and Led Zepplin, the band had a lot of work to do to match the stature of their claims. Luckily from the moment they swagger onstage to the sound of AC/DC's 'For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)'. The crowd knows they are in for one hell of a show as the blistering riffs of 'Straight Out of Line' begins and the band tear apart four of their most early tracks in quick succession.

It does not take lead vocalist Sully Erna to dismiss his tee and play the rest of the show half nude. The crowd cheers him on and he aggressively commands the audience during songs such as 'Voodoo' and 'Whatever'. There is no doubt Godsmack are a genuine rock act, no gimmicks or games, just great music.

Godsmack show was very excellent , I saw them a couple of times before they always performed good shows , but this time I bought VIP Unforgettable Package to meet & greet .

I have experienced before with VIP tickets like Paul Stanley , Accept ,UDO ,Dee Snider , Black Label Society , Dream Theater & etc, they all signed stuff without any problem but this time I spend maybe 10 seconds with Godsmack guys when the lady photographer made the picture , then the security people forced us to leave & this was the end meet & greet. Godsmack treated their fans very bad and I was really disappointed because I spent so much money and wasn't able to get anything signed. Also, I want to say about the lady photographer, because I looked through the gallery of pictures and Tony and Robbie were cut off in nearly all of the pictures which is absurd since they are important to. Either please tell her to learn how to take professional pictures or get someone else to replace her right away.

Godsmack in Grey Hall Christiania Copemhagen.

It was my first time to see Godsmack and it turned out that it was 20 years ago, that they last entered a stage in Denmark.

It was also my first time in The Grey Hall, so I was a bit exited about everything.

Franklin Zoo was support and they did a hell of a good job... Great band.

Godsmack entered the stage and they all looked like they enjoyed them selves and that quickly merged to the audience, the more the band played, the bigger a party the audience had.

The Double drumkit drum solo was magnificient and the 2 cover version "Come Together" & "Highway To Hell" was just performed perfect.

All in all this was a great concert and I will be among the audince, next time Godsmack comes to Denmark

My husband and I enjoyed the show very much. There were a few sound technical issues that are not noticeable to an untrained ear like the lead vocalist being slightly out of sink with the track playing. But each bands performance was incredibly entertaining, especially Red Sun Rising. The engry was high and we managed to get a free seat upgrade for showing up early to the venue. We were very happy with our experiences. And we were very happy to get free autographs from Red Sun Rising during the setup for Godsmack. It has been a dream come true to experience Godsmack LIVE!!

Godsmack -the Iband-was fantastic as usual. I've seen them so many times. This time..after paying 264$...I got stuck behind a huge speaker and couldn't see them. I was horrified. The staff wouldn't let me change to a better seat and we weren't able to exit the row as we were literally corralled in by metal bars. I'm thinking henious Firecode violations but whatever..Pensacola Bay Arena TANKED for this show..Ive been to a gazillion concerts (1000+)and this was one of my worst. Paid all that money and it was a bust.

Love Godsmack! They sounded great and put on a great show with the short time they had.

The venue was terrible, 1st time there. Went to celebrate my birthday. Should have waited until they were closer at Camden NJ or Montage PA.

Pass along a great venue in PA - Penns Peak in JimThorpe, my favorite place and about 1-1/2 to 2 hrs away. A very quaint little town with nice people.

Didn’t like Jiffy Lube Live at all.

Most fun I have had at a concert in a long time. Godsmack played a great show, excellent stage presence and involved the audience. I love how un-politically correct Sully is.

I have liked Godsmack but not as my go to Band, but after last night I think it will be,even bought a shirt.

Best band of the night, blew everyone off the stage.

If and when they come back I'll be there.

Thank you Godsmack!!!

Where do I begin!!!!??? Seeing Godsmack has been on my bucket list, and for good reason!! They were sensational! I was on my feet, from the moment the curtain went up, till the last note played. They were everything I expected, and so much more!! I hope this first experience isn’t my last. I absolutely loved them!!!!!!

Wow what a great show. It was my first time to see Godsmack and I wasnt disappointed. I can't wait to see them again hopefully not at an outside venue but it was well worth suffering in the heat. They sound great live. Shinedown was the main reason I went but will definitely be looking forward to see more Godsmack.

Godsmack Concert Review

Godsmack concert review (special guest Breaking Benjamin) – Cleveland, OH – Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica – September 22, 2015

Photo: T. Patrick Fenner

Godsmack made their way to Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica on a beautiful fall evening. While this writer hardly classifies Godsmack as a favorite, somehow, I’ve made it to eight shows (thanks in part to the band playing every touring festival known to man). Godsmack also accounts for two of my favorite shows, one being a taping of an MTV episode at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum back in 2001, the other an intimate acoustic show at the Akron Civic Theatre in 2004.

Godsmack came out swinging in 1998 when their self-titled debut sold more than four million copies behind the strength of the singles “Keep Away” “Voodoo,” “Whatever,” and “Bad Religion.” Frontman Sully Erna , bassist Robbie Merrill, and lead guitarist  Tony Rombola were all in tow before the release of the first record, while current drummer Shannon Larkin entered the band in 2002.

Unfortunately, with a 4x platinum debut, there is only one direction to go: down. 2000’s ‘Awake,’ the band’s sophomore effort, sold half the number of copies than their debut, with each of the next four records taking a dip in sales as well. But to say the band regressed musically or in popularity is unfair. After all, there is no shame in a gold record. And, to be fair, album sales across the board aren’t what they used to be. The reaction of the 3,000+ fans in attendance showed that their new music is revered almost as much as Godsmack’s early classics.

Godsmack photos from Cleveland on 09.22.15

Breaking benjamin photos from cleveland on 09.22.15.

The show got off to an awkward start with a marginally (at best) entertaining video showing two girls sneaking backstage and evading buffoon security guards for ten minutes before finally achieving their mission of meeting the band. The band entered the stage to Dropkick Murphys’ “I’m Shipping Off to Boston.” Strikes one and two in the books and Godsmack had yet to play a note. Fortunately, during the band’s 15 song set, strike three never came.

On tour in support their 2014 release, ‘1000hp,’ Godsmack opened the show with back to back songs off the album, “Generation Day” and the title track. A consecutive trio of hits, “Cryin’ Like a Bitch,” “Straight Out of Line, ” and “Awake” also made their way into the setlist in the first half of the show.

CleveRock’s interview with Godsmack bassist Robbie Merrill (09.18.15)

After performing “Whatever,” Erna disappeared momentarily before two doors located slightly behind Larkin’s drum kit opened, and Sully slowly wheeled out center stage to line up next to Larkin’s kit and a drum-off ensued. While not exactly Danny Carey and Carter Beauford, the two more closely resembled that duo than say…Patrick Carney and Meg White.

After the 10-minute drum battle, Erna remained behind the kit as Larkin stepped up to the mic for a cover of the Ramones’ “Blitzkrieg Bop.” An Alice Cooper cover ( “School’s Out” ) preceded “I Stand Alone,” the closing number for the night.

Opening act Breaking Benjamin put on an impressive 50-minute set. Having seen this band approximately ten times (eight of them on accident), I was pleasantly surprised that Ben Burnley and his retooled lineup sucked far less than I remember. I dare say they didn’t suck at all. Burnley was my first nationally touring act to grant me an interview back in 2004, and he’s come a long way since. With a six-year gap between 2009’s ‘Dear Agony’ and their current album, ‘Dark Before Dawn,’ Burnley seems re-energized. Opening the show with their 2004 hit, “So Cold,” and closing with their biggest hit to date, “Diary of Jane,” Breaking Benjamin sandwiched “Polyamorous” and “I Will Not Bow” during their thirteen song set. An oddly awesome moment came mid-set when the guys played a cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” after a lead-in of a lightsaber bearing Burnley as the band played “Imperial March.”  Burnley managed several variations of words of gratitude towards the fans (all of which contained F-bombs). And, for anyone wondering, he can still pull off his trademarked lion like growls. BB returns to the area for a co-headlining gig with Shinedown on November 7 at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown.

Sharing The Savvy Of My Life|Family,Food,Travel,Fun

Review | @godsmack #vibeztour rocks durham, nc @dpac @livenationncsc.

If you enjoy live music that rocks and rolls, thrills and sends chills to your soul, then you must experience Godsmack • Vibez Tour , an intimate evening of acoustic/electric performances + untold stories from Godsmack with special guest Bastian da Cruz!

On Friday, March 08, 2024, fans came to see the band perform at Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) , located in Durham, NC for a memorable, magical and miraculous night of music. For almost 30 years, Godsmack has an amazing way of connecting with fans on what they are going through in life and how we all can have our spirits lifted up with their songs. This is a very unique concert experience unlike I’ve experienced from the moment you step in the venue, the “Vibez” were set:

In continued support of their latest studio album  Lighting Up The Sky , multi-platinum Grammy-nominated hard rock band  GODSMACK  is transforming their thunderous pyro-filled amphitheater rock show into a more intimate experience. The band is set to deliver a series of intimate evenings featuring acoustic/electric performances and untold stories in theatres across North America.

With over 20 years of chart-topping success, GODSMACK have cemented themselves as 21st-century hard rock titans. To date, they’ve accomplished a staggering  11 #1 singles  at mainstream rock radio and have achieved  20 Top 10 hits  at the format (the most of any act since February 1999). Additionally, they’ve enjoyed four Grammy nominations and were named  Billboard Music Award’s Rock Artist of the Year  in 2001. Selling over 20 million records worldwide, the band has released eight studio albums;  Godsmack  (1998),  Awake  (2000),  Faceless (2003),  IV  (2006),  The Oracle  (2010),  1000hp (2014),  When Legends Rise  (2018), and  Lighting Up the Sky  (2023).

GODSMACK  is Sully Erna (vocals, guitar), Tony Rombola (guitar), Robbie Merrill (bass), and Shannon Larkin (drums). Sully Erna’s voice is as fantastic as ever and leaves an impact on the souls of the audience. Equally, Shannon, Tony and Robbie pour their hearts into their performances creating powerful music!

PGA Tour players learn how much loyalty is worth in new equity program

Players who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour amid lucrative recruitment by Saudi-funded LIV Golf are starting to find out how much that loyalty could be worth.

The PGA Tour on Wednesday began contacting the 193 players eligible for the $930 million from a “Player Equity Program” under the new PGA Tour Enterprises .

The bulk of that money — $750 million — went to 36 players based on their career performance, the last five years and how they fared in a recent program that measured their star power.

How much they received was not immediately known. Emails were going out Wednesday afternoon and Thursday informing players of what they would get. One person who saw a list of how the equity shares were doled out said the names had been redacted. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because many details of the program were not made public.

The Telegraph reported Tiger Woods was to receive $100 million in equity and Rory McIlroy could get $50 million, without saying how it came up with those numbers.

Commissioner Jay Monahan outlined the first-of-its-kind equity ownership program in a Feb. 7 memo to players, a week after Strategic Sports Group became a minority investor in the new commercial PGA Tour Enterprises.

The private equity group, a consortium of professional sports owners led by the Fenway Sports Group, made an initial investment of $1.5 billion that could be worth $3 billion. The tour is still negotiating with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia — the financial muscle behind the rival LIV Golf league — as an investor.

Any deal with PIF would most certainly increase the value of the equity shares.

Another person with knowledge of the Player Equity Program, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the dealings, said the equity money is not part of the SSG investment. That money was geared toward growth capital.

Golf.com received a series of informational videos on the Player Equity Program that was sent to players and reported only 50% of the equity would vest after four years, 25% more after six years and the rest of it after eight years.

It also reported how the 36 players from the top tier were judged on “career points,” such as how long they were full members, victories, how often they reached the Tour Championship and extra points for significant victories.

Jason Gore, the tour’s chief player officer, said in one of the videos, “It’s really about making sure that our players know the PGA Tour is the best place to compete and showing them how much the Tour appreciates them being loyal.”

Emails also were sent to 64 players who would share $75 million in aggregate equity based on the past three years, and $30 million to 57 players who are PGA Tour members. Also, $75 million in equity shares was set aside for 36 past players instrumental in building the tour.

The program has an additional $600 million in equity grants that are recurring for future PGA Tour players. Those would be awarded in amounts of $100 million annually started in 2025.

Players only get equity shares from one of the four tiers now, although everyone would be eligible for the recurring grants.

Even with equity ownership geared toward making the PGA Tour better, the concern was players questioning who got how much and whether they received their fair share.

LIV Golf lured away seven major champions dating to 2018 since it launched in 2022, all with guaranteed contracts and most of them believed to have topped $100 million.

McIlroy, playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, was asked how much would make players feel validated for their decision to stay with the PGA Tour.

“I think the one thing we’ve learned in golf over the last two years is there’s never enough,” McIlroy replied.
