A passing score on the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Ophthalmic Medical Assisting exam serves as a prerequisite for the written certifying examination for ophthalmic medical assistants offered by the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO). Successful completion of this course alone does not constitute certification as an ophthalmic medical assistant.

Uzhavar-Aluvalar Thodarbu Thittam

Increased usage of new crop technology in agriculture for improved crop produce in the state.

Tamil Nadu government has come up with a scheme named ‘ Uzhavar-Aluvalar Thodarbu Thittam ’. This scheme is mainly designed to bridge the gap between the farmers and the village panchayat wherein the farmers will get new crop technology and its usage as well as the authorities will get the condition of crops. Under this scheme new extension system will be created. A group of farmers will be selected in each village panchayat and accordingly they will be given training to use new technology in agriculture and the group of farmers will then be a bridge in between the authorities and the other farmers.

• The main objective the scheme is to let out new technology to the farmers for increased crop produce
• It also aims to fill in the gap between the farmers and authorities which enables the farmers to get the training and use new technology thereby

• Each village panchayat will create a group of farmers willing to learn new technology and they will then act as a bridge between the other farmers and authorities. Thus, there will be smooth flow of information

Better attention by agriculture extension officers on villages raises farmers' hopes

THANJAVUR: Farmers in the delta region welcomed Tuesday’s budget announcement on allocation of fewer villages per agriculture extension officers, as they believed this would increase the latter’s visits to each village to advise them on various aspects, including schemes and saving crops from pests and diseases. Minister for Agriculture MRK Panneerselvam while presenting the budget announced the ‘Uzhavar Aluvalar Thodarbu Thittam-2.0’ (UATT) (farmer-official interacting scheme).

Currently, an assistant agriculture officer is allocated eight to 10 panchayats and one horticulture officer 10 to 15 panchayats for providing extension services to farmers like providing department-related information and implementing the schemes. As such the officers can visit the respective village panchayats only once in a fortnight.

Hence designating one extension official for each village panchayat has met a long-pending demand of the farmers, the minister pointed out. "So, the 4,311 extension officers of agriculture and allied departments working at the block- and village- levels will be pooled and each one will be assigned three or four villages," the minister added.

They will integrate all activities related to agriculture, horticulture and plantation crops, agricultural marketing and agribusiness, and agricultural engineering at the village level, he said. P Senthilkumar, a farmer from Ammapettai in Thanjavur pointed out that such an officer currently covers even up to 20 villages.

"Besides lack of information on various schemes, many farmers now depend on input dealers for advice on saving crops from any pest attack or diseases," he said. Many a time the farmers had to shell out extra money due to wrong advice by the dealers. Now with one officer concentrating only on about four villages, farmers can meet them often and get suitable advice, he added.

Further, Senthilkumar welcomed the proposal to nominate one agriculture scientist per block to provide information on newly-released varieties, cultivation methods, nutrient management, etc. The budget envisages nominating one scientist per block either from nearby agricultural colleges or from agriculture research centres and farm science centres.

The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission ( TNPSC ) has released the exam schedule and admit card for the posts of Assistant Agriculture Officer (AAO) and Assistant Horticulture Officer (AHO) 2023. Eligible candidates must complete registration on the official website tnpsc.gov.in .

The Computer Based Test (CBT) is scheduled to be conducted on February 7, 2024, in two shifts at 7 district centres.

The recruitment drive aims to fill up a total of 263 vacancies out of which 84 vacancies are for the post of Assistant Agricultural Officer in Tamil Nadu Agricultural Extension Subordinate Service and 179 vacancies are for the post of Assistant Horticultural Officer in Tamil Nadu Horticultural Subordinate Service.

An online site and mobile application geared at farmers to apply all programs and services in the agricultural and allied sectors. Pertinent information, such as qualifying requirements and guidelines, is provided for all programs on the site.

Applicants can use their cellphone numbers to follow the real-time status of their applications via the portal or the app. They will know who is accountable for processing their application throughout the subsequent phase.
