A Virtual Tour through the Tutankhamun Collection at the Egyptian Museum

Photos: Egypt Launches first virtual visit of King Tutankhamun’s tomb at the time of discovery

As part of celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb, the Tourism and Antiquities Ministry, represented by the Supreme Council of Antiquities, on Friday launched the first virtual tour of the tomb recreated as it was first discovered in 1922, with all artifacts intact.

This virtual show is presented at the Visitors Center in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, using advanced Meta Quest II glasses, and in cooperation with private Egyptian and foreign companies.

The Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mostafa Waziri, said that a set of these glasses are available at the Visitors Center in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor.

He noted that the experience has received great response and interaction from most Egyptian visitors and tourists.

This unique experience falls under the Tourism and Antiquities Ministry’s keenness to use modern and advanced technology in displaying and improving the experience of visiting archaeological sites and museums in Egypt, he explained.

British archaeologist Howard Carter discovered King Tut’s tomb in 1922, when he dug through one of the doors and entered the tomb of the pharaoh, which has remained intact for about 3,200 years.

The tomb contained more than 5,000 artifacts, including a solid coffin, a gilded mask, and thrones.

It took Carter ten years to record all the items. But the only thing he couldn’t find was any record of how Tutankhamun died as there were no surviving records of the circumstances of King Tut’s death.

Scholars have now concluded that King Tutankhamun was not murdered, after a lengthy investigation that seemed to refute popular theory.

Inside Egypt’s Visit to King Tut's Tomb 

You can explore the interior of the popular tomb of Tutankhamun while visiting the Valley of the Kings in Luxor on your Luxor city tour . Tutankhamun's Tomb (KV62) is one of the most famous monuments in the world as Tutankhamun, the pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty, was buried there. Tutankhamun, also sometimes called Tutankhamen, ruled Ancient Egypt from 1333 to 1323 B.C.E. The tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered by Howard Carter and George Carnarvon in November 1922.

With ticket to the Valley of the Kings, you can visit three of the eight tombs of the pharaohs. The tour of Tutankhamun's tomb is not among these included tombs and is an extra charge. The Tutankhamun tomb price is 500 EGP per person.

The ticket for Tutankhamun's tomb must be purchased at the ticket office before entering the Valley of the Kings. You can buy a ticket in person, or ask our tour leader for help purchasing it.

In the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, our guests spend approximately three hours visiting the three tombs that are included in your ticket. Other pharaoh tombs are paid extra, including the tomb of Tutankhamun.

During the King Tut tour, you can see the final resting place of Tutankhamun, complete with his mummy wrapped in linen cloth and beautiful murals on the walls. Unfortunately, the Tutankhamun treasure along with the famous golden mask has been transferred to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, and is available for visitors to view there. King Tut's tomb is amazing and very special. This is the only tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor that has not been robbed and was uncovered with all its contents intact. You can almost feel the spirit of the young pharaoh next to you.

Tutankhamun’s tomb price and fees.

A question that many tourists ask is whether King Tut's tomb is open to the public. The answer is, yes, the tomb is open and you can visit the tomb of Tutankhamun. Your entrance ticket to the Valley of the Kings includes visits to three of the eight available royal tombs. Unfortunately, the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun along with two other tombs is not included in these eight.

You will need to buy a special ticket to visit the Tutankhamun tomb. The price is currently 500 EGP at the ticket office. This ticket allows you to visit the tomb of Tutankhamun individually, as part of your tour of the Valley of the Kings. Your guide cannot visit King Tut's tomb with a group of tourists, due to the size of the tomb. However, when exploring the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, he will give you tips on what to look for on the King Tut tomb tour. When you visit King Tut's tomb you can take photos for free with your mobile phone as long as you're not using a flash.

Why should I take a King Tut tomb tour?

A royal tomb during the 18th Dynasty was usually ornately decorated. However, due to his unexpected death, this was not the case for Tutankhamun's tomb. They had to use an existing tomb for his burial place and they had very little time to prepare it. Only the burial chamber itself was beautifully decorated with paintings. The marvelous wall paintings can still be seen inside the burial chamber during a tour of Tutankhamun's tomb. The walls were painted yellow, which is a sign of immortality, and they showed the following scenes: Figures on the north wall were painted in the distinctive style of Akhenaten's reign where the people are drawn with short legs, big stomachs, and they have large almond shaped eyes. Also on the north wall it shows the king's funeral. His coffin is placed in a large model boat with goddesses Isis & Nephthys looking on protectively. This is then staged across the sand towards the afterlife.

On the south wall, the scenes show the king wearing a white wig. In front of him, Hathor offers the sign of life (ankh) to Tutankhamun's nose, and behind him, Anubis places a hand on the king's shoulder. Behind Anubis is Isis, who is welcoming him into the netherworld.

There are three more scenes on the north wall. The first shows Ay (king's advisor, who became king after Tutankhamun died) wearing the blue crown, showing that he is heir to the throne.

The next scene shows the goddess Nut welcoming Pharaoh Tutankhamun into the realm of the dead.

The last scene in the burial chamber shows Tutankhamun standing before Osiris. Behind him stands a figure with raised arms on his head, between which is a bull, giving Tutankhamun's Horus name 'The strong bull'. The western wall is the most important as it faces the direction of the setting sun & the netherworld. The scene here presents 'what is the netherworld'. The scarab god Khepri (rising sun) is shown on a solar boat with two figures of Osiris (god of the dead) beside him. Before him stands Maat (goddess of truth & cosmic order) and Horus (god of kingship). Below this is a grid with 12 sections, each showing a baboon. This represents the 12 hours of the night. The Pharaoh traveled with the sun god through all of the 12 hours on a journey full of dangers. At the final destination he is re-born with the sun at dawn.

Tutankhamun's tomb - where is it located?

The discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb (KV62) was one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the early 20th century. In the Egyptian Valley of the Kings , located near the Egyptian city of Luxor, excavations were carried out from the end of the 18th century. However, most of the tombs there had already been robbed. Carter and Carnarvon were licensed to excavate this site in 1914. Archaeologists decided to remove the long-known remains of ancient barracks for workers employed in constructing the tombs and dig under them.

In 1922, they found stone stairs and doors. On November 26, they opened the chamber of Tutankhamun's tomb and the research went on for years. George Carnarvon, one of the explorers, died on April 6, 1923.

Who was King Tut?

3,400 years ago Amenhotep, the second son of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, later known as Pharaoh Akhenaten, abandoned his ancestral name and religion and he left the then capital of Egypt - Thebes (today's Luxor). He built the new city of Akhetaten, today called Amarna. This city was to be the capital of his new state and the main center of his new religion. Akhenaten and his wife Teye erected a great temple there dedicated to Aten - the sun god.

After Akhenaten's death, his 10-year-old son Tutankhamun became ruler of Egypt. He reverted to traditional Egyptian polytheism. At the age of 12, he had to marry Princess Anchesenaton, his half-sister and he then moved the capital of Egypt to Memphis. Initially his name was Tutankhaten, but in the fourth year of his reign he changed it to Tutankhamun. His wife Anchesenaton changed her name to Anchesenamon.

Genetic studies of the mummy showed that Tutankhamun suffered from malaria and osteitis. He also had a complicated leg fracture. These factors led to the death of the Egyptian ruler at a young age. King Tut was 19 years old at the time of his death.

What is the Curse of Tutankhamun?

The death of archaeologist George Carnarvon gave rise to rumors of Tutankhamun's curse. The explorer died as a result of an infection of a wound on his cheek that had formed a few months earlier after a mosquito bite. The novelist Marie Corelli published an article in several newspapers where she stated that she had found an ancient Arabic text saying that intruders disturbing the peace of the dead pharaohs would die due to poisoning by poisons placed in the tombs.

In the eight years after the discovery of the tomb, about 20 people were associated with Tutankhamun's curse. There were speculations that it might be a conspiracy or the effect of bacteria hidden in the tomb. However, Howard Carter announced that Tutankhamun's tomb did not contain any dangerous bacteria and there was no inscription with the curse above the entrance to the tomb.

Scientific research shows that the members of the team that discovered Tutankhamun's tomb lived to an average age of 70 years and Howard Carter died 17 years after opening the burial chamber.

Are the treasures still there?

The explorers were impressed by the furnishings of Tutankhamun's tomb and they found in it, three beds, a statue and a throne, among other things . All these objects were made of pure gold. The finds also included four gilded chariots, grave chests, three pharaoh-shaped coffins tucked into each other, and a golden death mask.

The most valuable find was the well-preserved mummy of Tutankhamun and research into the mummy began in 1925. The mummy was buried in a sarcophagus made of quartzite, but its cover was granite. According to scientists, the sarcophagus was originally intended for another person, but after Tutankhamun's death, the carvings were changed. In total, over 5,000 objects were found in Tutankhamun's tomb.

Among the valuable relics found in Tutankhamun's tomb is the golden mask of the pharaoh, which was on the face of the mummy. It weighs 10 kg and is 54 cm in length. Tutankhamun's mask was richly decorated with stained glass, faience, quartz, carnelian, obsidian, and lapis lazuli. On the arms of the mask there are hieroglyphs with a spell from the Egyptian "Book of the Dead". The mask along with Tutankhamun's treasure is now on show in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Which nearby monuments are worth visiting?

The tomb of Tutankhamun is located in the Valley of the Kings, with a total of 11 royal tombs open to the public. As part of your tour of Tutankhamun's tomb, you can choose three of the eight tombs available to visit with your entrance ticket to the Valley of the Kings, and three tombs, including the Tomb of Tutankhamun, are additionally payable. Near the tomb of Tutankhamun, you will find the terraced temple of Hatshepsut, also known as the Million Years Temple. It is another surviving object in West Luxor that is definitely worth visiting. It is inscribed on the wall of a high cliff behind which is the Valley of the Kings. This sacred building is the art of one of the great pharaohs - the woman of Egypt, Queen Hatshepsut. The temple is dedicated to the sun god Amon-Re, and the building is made of a three-story structure decorated with numerous columns. Inside there are chapels, a sanctuary and a courtyard.

A short distance from the tomb of Tutankhamun is the Valley of the Queens, which lies southwest of the Valley of the Kings in Western Thebes. Not only queens were buried here, but also princes and princesses, and sometimes even high state dignitaries. The tombs in the Valley of the Queens come from the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth dynasties. All burial sites are in the form of halls, chambers and corridors carved into the rock. The most famous and beautiful tomb belongs to Nefertari (QV66). Beloved wife of Ramesses II, she was one of the most influential women in ancient Egypt. Her great tomb testifies to her position, and the inscriptions confirm the great affection that Ramses II had for his wife. Among the other well-preserved tombs of the Valley of the Queens, the tombs of the sons of Pharaoh Ramses III should be visited:  tomb of Amun-her-khepeshef (QV55) and Khaemwaset (QV44). The frescoes and reliefs decorating the walls of these tombs are still clear, with rich colors preserved.

Medinet Habu complex looms in the vicinity of the Valley of the Kings, where you'll find the tomb of Tutankhamun. It's one of the remaining attractions on the left bank of the Nile. It is a complex of ruins that used to be the center of worship of the god Amon. This place has the appearance of a fortress - the high South Gate leads inside, where you'll find chapels and temples. The former Western Thebes is decorated with two huge statues - the Colossi of Memnon. These are figures that reach 15.60 meters high, representing the figure of the pharaoh Amenhotep III of the 18th Dynasty. This is the only part of the mortuary temple of this ruler that remains. It is estimated that the temple was affected by an earthquake, but the exact circumstances are unknown to this day. The Colossi of Memnon is a fine example of the art of the New Kingdom, which can be admired free of charge. Earlier this month, Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced the release of five new virtual tours of historic sites, adding to the range of online adventures that you can now embark on from home.

The tours explore the tomb of Meresankh III , the tomb of Menna , the Ben Ezra Synagogue , the Red Monastery and the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Barquq . Each virtual experience features detailed 3-D imagery through which users can “walk” by clicking hotspots along the structures’ floors.

As James Stewart reports for the Guardian , the tours boast “beefed up” 3-D modeling made by experts with Harvard University’s Giza Project . Unlike their real counterparts, most of which charge a small entry fee, the virtual renderings are free to all.

“The virtual tours target both [international] tourists and Egyptians, a ministry spokesperson tells Al-Monitor ’s Amira Sayed Ahmed. “They serve the double purpose of promoting Egyptian tourism nationwide and increasing Egyptians' awareness of their own civilization.”

Two of the tours—the tombs of Meresankh III and elite Egyptian official Menna —include background information accessible by clicking circles overlaid atop specific features. The former’s tomb, dated to some 5,000 years ago, is the oldest of the Egyptian sites available as a virtual walkthrough. Meresankh, a queen wed to King Khafre, was the daughter of Prince Kawab and Hetepheres II of the fourth dynasty, and the granddaughter of Great Pyramid builder Cheops, also known as Khufu.

Harvard archaeologist George Andrew Reisner discovered the queen’s tomb in 1927. He later stated that “None of us had ever seen anything like it.” Today, the burial place’s paintings and carvings remain well-preserved, showcasing hunters catching water birds, bakers making triangular loaves of bread and servants holding offerings.

In the northern chamber, along the wall furthest from the virtual tour’s starting point, ten statues of women stand shoulder to shoulder—an unusual sight among Gaza tombs. The statues “serve to emphasize Meresankh’s position among her queenly relatives,” the tour explains. Along the path to the 16-foot-deep burial shaft, users pass a pair of statues depicting Meresankh and her mother, Hetepheres II, with their arms around each other.

The path leads down a spiraling staircase into the burial shaft, where Meresankh’s black granite sarcophagus—originally created for her mother but re-engraved upon the queen’s death in 2532 B.C., according to the History Blog —was originally found. The tour includes a reconstructed image of the chamber with the sarcophagus in place, but the actual coffin is now kept at the Egyptian Antiquities Museum in Cairo.

The tomb of Menna, dated to the 18th dynasty (about 1549 B.C to 1292 B.C.), is “one of the most visited and best preserved” from the era, the ministry writes in a statement quoted by Live Science ’s Laura Geggel. The tomb’s decorations suggest the elite official was a scribe in charge of the pharaoh’s fields and the temple of sun god Amun-Re.

Menna’s tomb also includes informational blurbs highlighting such features as paintings of the scribe’s family, including his wife Henuttawy and their five children. Curiously, all of the paintings of Menna have been defaced.

“The ancient Egyptians believed that the soul of a person inhabited paintings of them and destroying the face would ‘deactivate’ the image,” the tour notes. “Why would someone want to destroy the memory of Menna?”

The tomb also served as a point of communication with the dead. It once featured life-size statues of Menna and Henuttawy that family members could make offerings to, ask for favors or visit during festivals.

The other three tours do not offer information blurbs at this time, but they still have plenty of detailed 3-D imagery for virtual visitors to explore. The Red Monastery , a Coptic church in Upper Egypt, features ornate frescoes, while the 14th-century Mosque-Madrassa is known for its immense size and innovative architecture. The Ben Ezra Synagogue in Old Cairo is alleged to be the site where baby Moses was found.

Ancient Egypt is coming to Jacksonville this summer. What we know about 'Beyond King Tut'

The secrets of an ancient Egyptian king will be on display in downtown Jacksonville this summer when “Beyond King Tut: The Immersive Experience” comes to town. 

The Tutankhamun show will open June 9 for "a limited run" at the NoCo Center , the former First Baptist Church auditorium at Beaver and Hogan streets where “Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience” opened in September for what was supposed to be a two-month run. “Beyond Van Gogh” closes April 30 after selling more than 130,000 tickets. 

Visitors to "Beyond King Tut" will travel through eight galleries, tracing Tutankhamun's life and his journey to the afterlife and learning about the mummification process and the preparation of the burial chamber. The main gallery features a 23-minute loop of images projected onto the walls, floors and people. A separately ticketed virtual-reality "Beyond the Tomb" experience is also available.

Tickets for "Beyond King Tut" will go on sale Thursday, April 27 at www.beyondkingtut.com . Tickets, which start at $33.99 for adults and $24.99 for kids, are sold in specific time slots and will be more expensive for peak times. It takes about an hour to see the whole show, but visitors can take as much time inside as they like. The venue and show are wheelchair-accessible.

More than pictures on the wall: Beyond Van Gogh is a moving art experience for Jacksonville fans

“Beyond King Tut,” which was put together with the help of the National Geographic Society, made its debut in 2022 — the 100 th anniversary of the discovery of Tut’s tomb — in New York and Boston. The show has also played in Los Angeles, Vancouver and Washington, D.C., and is scheduled to play in Atlanta later this year. 

The Tut show was created by Paquin Entertainment Group , the same company that put together the Van Gogh show. Hidden equipment projects a constantly changing series of images onto the walls and floors of the exhibit space, immersing visitors in the images. The show in other cities has included interactive elements, games and a virtual-reality experience.

There are no actual King Tut artifacts in the show. The Egyptian government has reclaimed artifacts from around the world for the new Grand Egyptian Museum , slated to open late this year.

"I think that’s their right," said Justin Paquin, president of Paquin Entertainment Group. "Can’t be upset about that."

Paquin said it takes a lot of work to switch from Van Gogh to Tut. The Tut exhibit involves a lot of physical displays in addition to the projection show.

"We have to load a lot of it out. It’s not like changing a USB stick or anything," he said. "There’s a lot of physical scenery involved in the show and there’s a lot more to read and look at than the Van Gogh show. There’s a bit more to it with the King Tut show."

He said his favorite part, aside from the main projection room, is the King's Room, where visitors can learn about Tut's life and play games that date back to ancient Egypt.

Paquin said the show will remain in Jacksonville through the summer. The company also has a "Beyond Monet" show available and at least two others — "Dinosaur Discoveries" and "Marvel Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N." — in development.
