This Under-the-radar Italian Island Offers Gin-clear Waters, White-sand Beaches, and Postcard-perfect Villages

Here's what you need to know about visiting Elba, a stunning Italian island part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.

visit elba island

More than 50 million people visited Italy in 2022, and many made their way to popular destinations like Rome, Milan, and the Amalfi Coast . But, if you’re going to be among the millions that head to the European nation in 2023 and beyond, may we suggest you look beyond the normal spots and visit one of the most stunning Italian islands instead? Namely, we suggest heading to Elba, Italy’s third-largest island, part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.

The island is by no means hidden — it does, after all, have a population of around 30,000 full-time residents — but it is by every measure an under-the-radar spot for most tourists. It’s time you got to know what Italians already do: Elba is the place to be for summer break.

What to Know

Elba may be the third-largest island in Italy, but it still only measures in at 86 square miles. It’s large enough to feel like a place you can spend days on end, but small enough to feel manageable. The island is a destination perfect for outdoor lovers with seemingly endless hiking and mountain biking trails and awe-inspiring beaches that are ideal for lounging around for an entire day in the sun. Elba is also packed with history — it’s most famous for being the site of Napoleon’s first exile. The French military commander lived on the island from 1814 until 1815, when he escaped back to France.

When to Go to Elba

Like most places in Italy, there really is no “bad” time to visit Elba. There are just a few times throughout the year that may feel a little more pleasant than others. The summer months (between June and mid-September) are ideal, with daily average highs hitting above 75°F, according to WeatherSpark . However, even January, the island’s coldest month, is still worth considering for a vacation, as the daily high hovers around 55°F. The island’s rainiest months arrive in the fall, between September and early December — so if you’re hoping for a beachside break, perhaps avoid this time.

Things to Do on Elba

Soak in the thermal baths of san giovanni..

Vacations should be a time for rest and relaxation, and the island of Elba more than delivers thanks to its famed thermal baths . The baths can be found in a thermal basin located on the Portoferraio Gulf. It’s a place that’s said to be rich in iron and iodine, which will help soothe aching muscles.

Climb Mount Capanne.

Work up a sweat and take in the gorgeous view with a hike up Mount Capanne, the tallest mountain on the island. The mountain rises some 3,200 feet in elevation, and the trail to its peak is about eight miles long. If you plan to make the trip to the top and back, make sure to plan for an entire day and pack plenty of water.

Lounge on the beach.

Though the island is filled with gorgeous beaches worthy of your vacation days, Biodola is a standout option. The beach is home to stunning azure waters and warm, soft sand. It’s also sheltered from southern winds, making it the perfect place to lounge under an umbrella from sun up to sun down.

Go snorkeling.

The waters around the island make for an ideal place to go for a dip and take a peek at the fish swimming below. Guests here will find eels, starfish, and colorful coral. There are plenty of outfitters that are happy to take you out to various destinations around the island; see many of the spots and book a tour online .

The best 7 things to do on the elba island.

When summer comes we feel it in the air. After the cloudy winter months, the sun shines and the temperature gets warmer. While wheatfields turn from green to yellow colors, the call of the sea is strong on us living by the coast. The crystal clear waters of Elba Island in Tuscany are the perfect spot to take a bath and enjoy hours of well-deserved relaxation. Considering that this gem of the Tuscan Archipelago is not only beach and sunbeds, we selected a list of things to do on Elba Island in Italy.

Overview of Elba Island

For us, it is always great to go back to Elba Island. This island reminds us of our cheerful youth when we jumped on the ferry with our friends. No matter if it was for a week or just a weekend! Only one hour on the boat separated us from this little paradise, its amazingly clear waters, and lush nature.

Where is Elba Island?

The Elba Island is part of the Tuscany region. It is the most famous island of the Tuscan Archipelago that includes other six islands: Capraia, Gorgona, Pianosa, Giglio, Giannutri, and Montecristo .

On beautiful days when the sky is clear, looking at the sea from the Tuscan coast, you see the profiles of these islands over the horizon. That of Elba is the biggest and it doesn’t even seem too far away. From the town of Piombino, Elba is so close that it almost feels like you can touch it with one hand.

How to get to Elba Island?

You get to Elba Island from the port of Piombino on the mainland. Portoferraio is the main port on the island. Surfing the web you can find the best deals for the ferry from Piombino to Portoferraio . But there are a few lines to Cavo and Rio Marina too.

A good base on Elba Island is the lovely village of Capoliveri . You can choose your accommodation here and move around the island by car. No matter where you are on the island, there will always be a beach or small bay near you to relax.

However, Elba Island is not only beach life. You can hike if you want and if it’s not too hot. And discover a bit more of the history of Elba. This is the island where Napoleon spent his exile.

7 things to do on the Elba Island: our selection

Rest in the sun at the beach.

There are so many incredible beaches to visit that it would take two weeks to try a different place every day. We will dedicate a blog post only to them. You can choose between the wonderful white pebble beaches of Capo Bianco and Le Ghiaie near Portoferraio , the golden sandy beach of La Biodola , and the long-equipped Lacona Beach. Cavoli Beach is a favorite for young people looking for fun and music. To follow, we talk a bit about two of our favorite ones, the wild Pomonte Beach  and  Fetovaia Beach .

1. Discovering the wreck at Pomonte Beach

Pomonte Beach is one of the wild spots of Elba Island . To reach this beach, I remember that from the church of the village, we have to follow the main road, and once there, park the car in one of the free parking 60 meters away from the beach. Pomonte beach is a lovely tiny pebble beach with crystal clear water . It is a  quiet place to relax , where is also possible to rent a sunbed and a sun umbrella. Our suggestion is to arrive early in the morning to take place.

It is perfect if you love snorkeling  or  immersion too. It is possible to admire the submarine fauna, and the  wreck of a ship called “Elviscot”  that, since 1972, lay on the white sea bottom at only 200 meters from the beach. I remember that, when I went there years ago, the East wind was blowing and some guys were surfing. I also have the memory of an intense moment admiring the sunset facing the silhouette of Corsica, France’s largest island, on the horizon.

2. Paddleboat at Fetovaia, a beach perfect for families

Fetovaia Beach  is one of the most beautiful beaches of Elba Island, located not far from the village of Marina di Campo . Nestled in a small natural cove, Fetovaia is a golden sandy beach with watercolors that go between turquoise and sapphire . It is possible to add moments of relaxation at the beach, with excursions in paddleboats , or with walks along the long promontory surrounded by the wild Mediterranean scrub.

If you are traveling with kids, this beach is perfect because the water is shallow and calm. The sea is rough only if southern winds such as Libeccio or Scirocco are blowing. So you do not have to be worried about them while they are playing in the water. The beach has facilities like a bar and restaurant, paddleboard rental, and is pet-friendly too.

fetovaia beach Elba Island

The only inconvenience is that especially in July and August, it is one of the most crowded beaches of Elba Island, but once plunged into this marvelous water, I am sure you will forget about it.

Walking into the history of Elba Island

3. visit the fortress of volterraio.

Being fascinated by castles and legends of knights and old families, I would visit the Fortress of Volterraio. You have to drive to Rio nell’Elba, and from there, with a nice walk reach the castle, which is the most ancient building on Elba Island , and its origins date back to the Etruscan civilization .

Its name may come from the Etruscan term “ Vultur ” (Vulture); if you are a fan of the  Twilight Saga , this term is probably familiar to you. In 1281, Pisa decided to use the fortress for defensive reasons investing enormous resources for its expansion. Thanks to this important reinforcement, the Turkish pirates never conquered the castle during their several incursions on Elba Island.

4. Villa San Martino, an eye on Napoleon’s life

The historical figure of Napoleon always had a great appeal to me since the time of elementary school, for his role during the French Revolutionary Wars, and for becoming in a short time a great conqueror thanks to his strategic skills. Therefore we won’t miss for any reason a visit to the places where he lived on Elba Island as Villa San Martino and the Villa dei Mulini .

Located in the countryside of Elba Island the neoclassical Villa San Martino , made of a golden color stone hailing from Elba Island, has a fascinating history, especially for its owner Napoleon Bonaparte. He used to rest here in the coolest hours of the day, and often he enjoyed the company of noble ladies and peasants of the gentle sex. He wanted this two-storey house with sober architecture as his summer residence, and his sister Paolina lent him the money to buy it. Napoleon Bonaparte lived here in exile for only nine months, from 4 May 1814 to 26 February 1815. He was entitled Prince and the Elba Island became for the first time the center of European political affairs. He invested money in modernizing the island, financing the construction of a road system, introducing administrative decrees, and sustaining the rise of the industries.

The Egyptian Room

At the entrance of the villa, the statue of Galatea welcomes the visitor. The Italian artist Canova made this masterpiece by choosing Mrs. Paolina Bonaparte Borghese as a model. A must-see in this astonishing villa is the Egyptian room on the second floor, and its walls decorated with trompe l’oeil representing the Egyptian campaign. Inside the Egyptian room, it is also possible to admire an octagonal basin containing papyrus plants.

The Room of the Love Knot

In the room of the Love Knot, used at that time as a dining room, look up to the ceiling and appreciate the beautiful frescos representing the love between Napoleon and Marie Louise, symbolized by two doves flying away that are tying a knot of love. We will also have a look at the Demidoff Gallery. In 1851, the Russian prince Anatolio Demidoff, husband of Matilde of Monfort, Napoleon’s nephew, decided to buy the villa. He financed the building of a gallery to conserve his astounding Napoleonic gallery, and to satisfy his pleasure as an art collector.

To celebrate his devotion to Napoleon, the gallery was decorated with Napoleonic symbols such as the imperial eagle, the three bees, and the initial “N”. It hosted also another famous sculpture, the Paolina Bath, with the well-known marble bathtub, the imperial library, and other decorations representing the Egyptian campaign. Unfortunately, this first real Napoleonic museum of the world was closed at the death of Anatolio in 1871, and all the collection was sold.

Since 1984 the gallery has been used as an exhibition space housing several prints of the Napoleonic Era coming from many private collections, and temporary historical exhibits.

Villa San Martino where Napoleone spent his esile on the Tuscan Island

5. Villa dei Mulini, the town dwelling of Napoleon’s court

The city residence of Napoleon on Elba Island is set on Portoferraio promontory, between Forte Falcone and Forte Sella . It takes his name from the several Mulini (windmills) settled here in the olden days. The reason for using this villa as his preferred residence was the strategic overlooking position above the town and the sea . From the panoramic terrace, he could observe the boats entering the port and even admire a wonderful landscape.

During his stay, Napoleon recreated a few times the splendor of his French court . He made a favor to host his mother and his sister Paolina that, otherwise they would never have come to Elba. Nowadays the villa houses memorabilia and furniture from the Napoleonic Era. A special mention goes to the library that Napoleon brought with him during his exile. It includes some precious Voltaire, La Fontaine , and Plutarco . and he donated it to the town of Portoferraio.

Experience the Mediterranean scrub

6. hike the capanne mount.

If you love hiking, we suggest reaching the peak of  Capanne Mount , which is a fascinating challenge being one of the highest points of the entire Island with its 1019 meters above sea level. Walking along the trails that lead to the peak you will discover the beautiful  Mediterranean scrub and its unique scent .

The Monte Capanne is also a perfect environment for several plants and animals. Here you can catch sight of wild boars or mouflons.

If you cannot walk too much, or you are too lazy to move, do not worry, in just 14 minutes the cable car drops you on the top. This lookout is the ideal spot to admire the wonderful landscape of Elba Island from three sides and a good place to take great panoramic shots of the island and the Mediterranean Sea .

Monte Capanne on Elba Island

Discover the wildlife of Elba Island sea

7. elba aquarium and wildlife museum.

If you have time, take a look also at the little Elba Aquarium located in Marina di Campo , in the Southwest of the island.

More than 80 tanks , filled with 250.000 liters of seawater, host about 150 different species of Mediterranean marine organisms, making it one of the most complete current Mediterranean aquariums . The reason why we think that the Aquarium is well worth a visit is that tanks are handmade with artificial and natural materials to accurately reproduce the habitat of each species of the Mare Nostrum and of the Tuscan Archipelago.

You will probably lose the perception of time admiring sharks , fishes, turtles , crustaceans and mollusks , marbled newts, starfishes, and sea urchins. We guess that sea lovers cannot miss a visit. We also think it might be interesting both for adults and children. They can learn how to recognize, appreciate, and protect sea life.

Where to Sleep on Elba Island

The island is relatively small and easy to explore by car. Wherever you decide to stay, the distances between places are very short. To follow you find info about locations where to book your Elba Italy Hotels.

Portoferraio

Accommodation in Portoferraio

Portoferraio is the port where most of the ferries dock . It can be a good base for everyone who doesn’t have a car. You can easily reach the beaches of Le Ghiaie and Le Viste , and get public transportation to explore the rest of the island.

Marina di Campo

Accommodation in Marina di Campo

Marina di Campo has the advantage of having the beach within easy walking distance. It is then one of the favorites for families with kids. There is also a good choice of bars, restaurants, and shops. So it is a good base for everyone who loves a bit of nightlife after sunset. Every Wednesday along the waterfront the street market takes place. Not far from Marina di Campo is the famous beach of Fetovaia.

Accommodation in Capoliveri

Capoliveri is, in our opinion, the loveliest town on the island. It is on the top of a small hill and is quite lively at night. The main square is like a terrace with a sea view. Almost every summer night hosts events, entertainment, and music concerts.

Marciana Marina

Accommodation in Marciana Marina

Marciana Marina is the smallest village of Elba in the northwestern part of the island. There is a lovely promenade along the central pebble beach. This is the perfect shore if you don’t want to move around the island. If you don’t like the sand and prefer to rest in the sun on the rocks, facing the sea, on the right you will find the Scogliera del Cotone .

Porto Azzurro

Accommodation in Porto Azzurro

The fishermen’s village of Porto Azzurro develops at the foot of the fortress of San Giacomo . It was built in the early 1600s at the behest of the Spanish. On the seafront, dine in one of the exclusive restaurants on stilts. Stroll around the tourist harbor, you can admire majestic yachts during summertime and small fishing boats in winter.

It’s the historical side of Elba that interests me the most. I’d see those villas, then go snorkeling or diving in the evenings!

' src=

Good Idea, avoid the hottest hours at the beach that is not very healthy, visiting historical sites, then enjoy snorkeling and relax at the beach at sunset. 🙂

' src=

I was wondering where I had heard of Elba Island and then I read your post and remembered – Napoleon’s exile. It seems like an interesting island with a lot of things to do! And the waters look breathtaking as well! Sounds like the perfect place to explore this summer, enjoy 🙂

we give you a local tip if you will come in the future: skip the summer and come in May or September. the island will be empty and the temperature still very warm to enjoy the sea and hiking. 🙂

' src=

Thank you for the tip. I was planning on going for my birthday in July but now changing plans for September for sure.

Glad to have helped you. 🙂

' src=

Ciao! I noticed the comments are rather old. Is Elba Island still non-touristy in September? Grazie!

Ciao Julie, in my opinion Elba in September is perfect. Maybe during the first week/10 days it might be quite touristy, but when the “Italian school season” starts most of the tourists leave.

' src=

Never heard of this place before and it sounds wonderful! Great article!

Great article and a truly interesting place. Very lovely town with scenic landscapes and amazing history. Definitely, on my top places to visit.

Elba Island looks stunning – I think I’m probably going to add this to my Tuscan bucket list, having only visited Pisa + Florence!

You saw only a little bit of the many things to do. 🙂 We hope you will have time to come again and visit a bit of the rest.

' src=

Haven’t even heard of Elba before now but it looks amazing. i’d love to walk through that old villa of Napoleon, close my eyes, and imagine it was 200 years earlier.

we too…Napoleon history is so fascinating… 🙂 and then when you open your eyes, you have a wonderful panorama in front of you!! 🙂

Elba is just one of those perfect Mediterranean vacation destination that everyone should visit once in the lifetime. Luckily I was born on the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian Sea and Elba are not too far away!

You are right, few hours to cross Italy and you will be there. 🙂

Great article 🙂 Thanks for sharing! I went to Elba as a kid and I only remember the beaches, will have to go back to see more:)

Actually the main reason to go to Elba is resting in one of the wonderful beaches. But as you can see, if you want to do something different, you have nice alternatives.

' src=

Great Pictures! Thank you for sharing! 🙂

many thanks to you. happy you enjoyed pictures.

' src=

Looks like a great place to visit with a good mix of history and attractions. The Napoleon angle is certainly interetsing and and alternative to all the sun and sea

we agree with you…you can make a good mix of things to do on Elba!! 🙂

' src=

Honestly, in my ignorance I didn’t even hear about it. Now it is definitely on my bucket list. It looks stunning. Thanks so much for the inspiration.

we are happy you have discovered a new place to visit. We wait for you then. 🙂

' src=

The photos are gorgeous… I can’t get over those blues!

Many thanks Nuraini…if pictures are gorgeus can you imagine to admire those blues in person? 🙂

' src=

I also loved learning about Napolean. I had no idea he was exiled! I think it’s so cool that rooms in his home were named, like the Egyptian room.

Actually he was exiled twice…the second one in St Elena in the Atlantic Ocean is the place where he died. 🙂

' src=

Hello! The Island looks amazing! I love the colour of the water!! It would be very interesting to see the wreck of the “Elviscot” . Is it possible to go on your own or is it necessary to go with a “”diving company””?

About the Capanne Mount , I will take the cable car hahahhhaha.

Nice post Edoardo!

Hello Luis, we are happy you enjoyed the post. the wreck is only 8-10 meters under the water. You are not obliged to get a guide, but if you are an expert in free diving or scuba diving, for your safety, we suggest to get a guided tour of the wreck.

' src=

Ahhh. Capoliveri where my roots are. Love Elba and have visited my cousins there 3 times. My cousins own The Mandel Club and Cala Dei Peducelli and Villa Rosanna.

Dear Linda, thanks for your comment. Elba is a lovely island. I will take a look into the accommodations of your cousins. 🙂

' src=

Hi, Thanks for sharing, Great post, looks very beautiful. I plan on visiting in August with my family. Are there any places to hire bicycles with a guide for a leisurely cycle ride around part of the island and perhaps recommended places for lunch close to the shore? We will be based in Capoliveri.

Dear Yvonne, thanks for your comment. I am not living on the island but I am trying to collect good info for your and reply to your requests. I will get back to you very soon.

Dear Yvonne, for a guided tour by bike, you can contact “bikecenterelba.it”. For restaurants close to shore I would suggest “da Luciano” in Scaglieri next to Portoferraio and “Borgo Al Cotone” in Marciana Marina. However, the choice is certainly wider and there are lovely restaurants in every town. 🙂

Hi, we are coming to Italy in March next year and wanted to travel to Elba. Weather good toward the end of March? Would be interested in a tour and a BB to stay at …maybe 1 or 2 days during the week not weekend. Thank you for recommendations and/or information

Hey Sharon, thanks for contacting us. March is a bit risky for Elba. Sun may shine with mild temperature but you can also find rain and low temperature. I would suggest a middle season like the end of April, May, or September to avoid the crowd. If you have a car you can tour around the island with no problem and reach all the main attractions and towns. In March not all hotels/BB are open because is still low season so the choice can be limited. For more info about Elba, I suggest you visit the website infoelba.it.

' src=

Thank you for the informative advice. It sounds wonderful there. I’m hoping to go in August as a solo traveler. A couple of friends have visited Elba and said it was so beautiful

Dear Marina, thanks for leaving a comment. Your friends are right, Elba is beautiful. August will be the crowdest period of the year which means many people at the beach and in restaurants. You will need more organization. Instead, September is much better: less expensive and less people but still wonderful weather. Highly recommend to have a car. public transport is not so good to reach every part of the island.

' src=

Hello! Is October already too cold to enjoy the beaches ?

Hey Astrid, It is not easy to give you an answer. Last year I had my last bath at the end of October. Yesterday 1st october I had a bath too. If the sun shines temperature are still good. The water is not as warm as in August but still pleasant and refreshing. I would suggest a location where in case of bad weather or cold day, you can do something else.

Hello! Is the weather in mid October already too cool?

Hey Astrid, last year we had a warm October. One of the best time to visit Tuscany. Obviously is not as warm as August but you can enjoy a few hours at the beach if the sun shines.

' src=

We are hoping to be there in early October. Is this a good time to Visit. Where would you suggest we stay. Just the 2 of us .

Dear Colin, many thanks for writing. I think is a good period. In recent years, the month of October is still warm and you can comfortably go to the beach and swim. Of course, the temperatures are not summer temperatures (which are actually too high and annoying). Since it is now out of peak season, the island will not be crowded. You are able to enjoy days of sunshine and calm.

' src=

Traveling to portoferraio at the end of October! Will this still be a good time to visit??

Dear Janice, the end of October is a bit borderline. It depends on the weather. If it’s still nice and warm, it’s worth it, otherwise I would change plans. At that time of year, there will be no problem getting a seat on the ferry so, if you can, I recommend making a last-minute decision and being prepared to change your plan. The surroundings of Piombino (the port of departure to get to Elba) are beautiful with many places to visit (the Gulf of Baratti and the archaeological park, the towns of Suvereto, Massa Marittina, the small villages of Bibbona, Castagneto and Bolgheri, the thermal waters of Venturina and Sassetta….).

Visit the beautiful island of Elba

Elba is the biggest island of the Tuscan Archipelago and the third largest in Italy after Sardinia and Sicily. Together with eight other islands, including Giglio, Giannutri and Montecristo, it is part of the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago, the largest marine park in Europe.

The island of Elba is famous around the world for harboring French Emperor Napoleon in 1814 during his exile. But its history goes back to prehistory, with the Ilvati tribe from Liguria who named the island Ilva. It was then inhabited first by the Etruscans and later by the Romans , who really appreciated the island and its rich deposits of iron and its mud baths.

There are several memories of its glorious past as we visit the island, from the archaeological findings in its museums to the impressive fortresses and military constructions such as Castello del Volterraio and then on to the beautiful Napoleonic residences of the 1800s such as Palazzina dei Mulini.

What really makes Elba famous and renowned are its clear and blue sea and beautiful beaches . The extraordinary richness of its landscapes, both land and marine, turns the island of Elba into a unique destination in Tuscany . We can say that is a heaven on earth, with nothing to envy of more exotic Caribbean destinations.

In addition, Elba is the perfect place for outdoor sports and activities . Among the most appreciated sports, there is diving and snorkeling in Elba , thanks to its rich seabeds housing lots of different species of fish. But outdoors lovers can also enjoy spending time on land hiking and mountain biking , enjoying a round of golf , a day of sailing or enjoying days of complete relaxation at the thermal baths of San Giovanni . Here's another excellent  resource on the Elba island and what you can see and do on the island of Elba!

The 10 Most Adventurous Things to Do on Tuscany's Elba Island

visit elba island

Isola d'Elba, or Elba Island, is the largest of the Tuscan Archipelago, the group of seven enchanting islands off the coast of Tuscany, Italy . While it's a popular beach destination for droves of Italians, Europeans, and, increasingly, North Americans, Elba is also a hub for adventure lovers. Much of the island, especially in the rugged interior, is undeveloped and laced with hundreds of trails for hiking and biking. The pristine sea surrounding Elba invites lovers of water sports, while other attractions on the island are designed with soft adventure in mind.

Of course, if you want to visit Elba and pass your time hopping from one beach to the next, there are plenty of opportunities for that. But if you yearn for a more active vacation, here are our top-recommended things to do on Elba Island , starting with mild and escalating to wild!

Ride to the Top of Monte Capanne

At 950 meters above sea level, Monte Capanne is the highest mountain on the island. From viewing platforms at the top, you can catch glimpses of the islands of Capraia, Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio, and even the French island of Corsica on a clear day. But the real fun is in getting to the summit. Up to two riders at a time stand in bright yellow, bird-cage-like cable cars ( cabinovia in Italian) that slowly climb up the mountain. During the 20-minute ride, you get spectacular views of the terrain and sparkling blue sea in the distance, and you might spy a mouflon or two—the wild sheep are common on the island. In the summertime, there's a bar when you reach the top of the mountain.

Descend Into Miles of Abandoned Mines

Miniere di Calamita Capoliveri Isola d'Elba

Since at least Etruscan times, Elba was prized for its rich mineral sources, especially magnetite, or iron ore. While the operations at the Calamita Mine in Capoliveri are much more recent—the mine only closed in the 1980s—they tell the history of mining on Elba. Via a guided tour, you can trek through underground tunnels and mine sites, learning about its mechanics and the dangerous, difficult lives of the miners who worked there. There are more than 7 miles of tunnels, though the tour visits just a portion of them. Don’t worry—the mines are safe to visit these days, and hard hats are mandatory.

Jump on a Mountain Bike or E-Bike

With so many miles of terrain and trails on Elba, think about exploring the island on a bike. Cyclists of all skill levels will find a route to meet their match, with trails rated in difficulty level from green to double black diamond. You can rent a traditional mountain bike or e-bike—perfect for getting some extra oomph on those steep hills—from Bike Centre Elba , which also offers guided tours of the island.

Tackle a Challenging (or Easy) Hiking Trail

One really cool thing about hiking on Elba? It's hard to get lost. That's because the island's miles and miles of trails are fully charted on Google Maps thanks to the Elba Smart Exploring project. Using drones and a 360-degree camera, the project mapped every hiking and biking trail and beach on the island, making it super easy for anyone to navigate Elba with their smartphone.

One of Elba's most epic hikes is the Grande Traversata Elbana (GTE), a 31- to 34-mile, multi-day trek across the entire island. There’s also plenty of short, flat trails, so anyone can join in on the fun regardless of fitness level.

Snorkel in the Tyrrhenian Sea

Crystal-clear water, amazing visibility, colorful corals, and lots of fish: Snorkeling in the Tyrrhenian Sea is one of the best ways to cool off on Elba. You can bring your own snorkel and fins, though most sizable beaches and seaside towns have stores that offer gear rental. Once you’ve got your mask, simply swim out from the beach—no boat required. Some of the best snorkeling spots on Elba include the beaches of Capo Sant'Andrea and Marciana Marina. Do be aware of and avoid the medusas, or jellies, that float on the top of the water—several species here have a nasty sting.

Kayak Over Crystal-Clear Waters

Elizabeth Heath

Elba looks spectacular from any angle, but especially from the water. If you’re ready to make a splash, plan a morning of kayaking on the calm beaches of the island. There are plenty of kayak rental places that will provide you with everything you need, including tips on how to kayak safely. It’s a solid workout, but if you get too hot, no problem—just jump in the sea! Kayaking is also a great way to beat the summer crowds; most tourists flock to the beaches on a sunny day, but not everyone picks up a paddle. Kayaks can also take you to hidden coves and beaches that are not otherwise reachable by land.

Keep Your Balance on a SUP

Elba Water Sports Procchio

Ready to put your balance to the test? Try stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP, on the calm waters close to shore. Whether you stay on your knees or stand all the way up, the challenge of balancing on the water (without falling in!) is a lot of fun. It’s great exercise, but also a sport that requires no experience. At Elba Water Sports on Procchio Beach, you can rent paddleboards or take a lesson before heading out.

Take a Deep Dive

Diving in Elba

If you have your scuba diving certification or want to get certified on vacation , there’s a whole new world to be discovered under the sea. Elba is a celebrated dive site, thanks to its abundant marine life, rock formations, reefs, and lots of shipwrecks, some dating back to ancient Rome. Local dive shop Diving in Elba runs regular dive boat excursions, including to the Pomonte, the island’s most famous wreck. Advanced open water divers will love the Scoglietto dive site, which features caves, walls of coral, and deep blue water.

Ascend to New Heights

For thrill-seekers and gravity-defiers, Elba offers some great rock climbing spots. With so many granite mountains and cliffs to scramble up and down, arrampicata sportiva (or free climbing with ropes and a harness ) is popular throughout the island. Popular climb sites include Monte Capanne, Fetovaia, and San Bartolomeo. If you’re heading to the island to climb, you might want to link up with the Elba Free Climbing Club; shoot them an e-mail to find out about any planned organized climbs while you’re visiting.

Catch the Wind in Your Sail

Relish the feeling of sea spray on your face and the wind at your back? If so, take to the sea on a windsurfer, sailboat, or catamaran, and enjoy an exhilarating ride as you breathe in the stunning island scenery. Elba Water Sports rents out windsurfers and other boats, and also offers charter trips around the island. If you prefer to speed around the island a bit faster, you can also rent small motorboats and gommone (zodiac rafts) that don't require a marine license.

Situated just 10 kilometers from the mainland, Elba Island is the largest of the seven islands that make up the Tuscan Archipelago.

With a diverse terrain that ranges from rugged mountain peaks to pristine beaches, the island offers a wealth of natural beauty to explore.

Monte Capanne, Elba’s highest peak, rises majestically to 1,019 meters, providing panoramic views of the surrounding azure waters and verdant landscapes.

The Lesser-Known Italian Island You’ll Want To Visit On Your Next Trip

visit elba island

  • Destinations

When thinking about Italian islands, names like Sardinia, Sicily , or Capri will probably spring to mind first. Whilst these are sitting in the Mediterranean Sea, we will introduce you to an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast of Tuscany . Elba, or Isola d’Elba in Italian, is the largest of seven islands that form the Tuscan archipelago, located just 10 miles east of the Tuscan town of Piombino, which is also the departure port for the ferry, the only way to travel to Elba. There is a small airport on the island, but it is not frequented by popular airlines.

Portoferraio is the island’s capital, the largest city, and the port where the ferries from Piombino arrive. Before embarking on your trip to Elba, you should take some time to explore Piombino with its historical center, marina, and terrace jutting out over the sea.

The best time to visit Elba is from April to October when Italians and other nationals – predominantly Europeans – come to enjoy an island that is so diverse and is growing more appreciated. Elba’s name is probably best known because it was here that Emperor Napoleon was exiled in 1814. Apparently, he didn’t like the island very much. Under the circumstances, this is hardly surprising, but his exile lasted only 9 months. Today’s visitors, however, will love it because there is so much to do and see. The interior is rugged and crisscrossed with many paths for avid hikers and walkers. Beach lovers find their paradise on one of the approximately 80 beaches and coves. Divers and snorkelers can explore the crystal clear water and the sea life of the coasts.

Fans of history can visit the home of Napoleon, the museums, and can enjoy the fine food and wines of Elba. A last word to the legacy of the emperor: he wasn’t idle during his exile. He worked on improvements, foremost the creation of the internal road network. This is indeed very convenient because the ferry carries cars during the summer, meaning that you can explore the island in a vehicle. That said, the interior roads are steep and winding.

The port of Portoferraio on Elba Island in Italy

1. Exploring Portoferraio

The name reflects the island’s past when iron ore was mined, milled, and exported from here; this industry brought wealth to Elba. Portoferraio greets you with a massive fortress, called Medici Fortress, and a lovely old town that is prettier than the industrial port area. Visit the Linguella Tower Villa dei Mulini , Napoleon’s residence during his exile on Elba. The villa is today a national museum.

It’s not only Napoleon who left his traces; the Romans did so too. Remains of a Roman villa can be visited near the Martello Tower. Despite his rather short sojourn on Elba, Napoleon treated himself to a summer residence a short distance from Portoferraio called Villa San Martino . The magnificent neoclassical architecture of the building is worth the little side trip from the capital.

There are also various festivals during the year, even more so as it is the 201 st anniversary of Napoleon’s death. Depending on your tastes and interests, you might want to plan your stay around these dates.

If you like seafood, a great place to eat in Portoferraio is Pizzeria 2001.

Cable cars traveling up Mount Cappane

2. Climbing Mount Cappane

At 3,343 feet, Mount Cappane is the highest elevation on the island. Choose a clear day and set off early in the morning to ascend the peak for a spectacular view over Elba and the entire archipelago. There are two ways to get to the top: if you are a keen and fit hiker, you can do it on foot. The path leads through a thick chestnut tree forest and at the top awaits a facility with a bar to catch your breath and freshen up. The trek takes about 3 hours.

More fun, in my opinion, is to use the cable car because it is such a tiny thing. But you better not have fear of heights, because it’s just a cage – open on all sides – that only carries a maximum of two adults. The cable car runs from early spring to the end of September. The departure station is to be found between the villages of Poggio and Marciano, and the ride takes 20 minutes. There is a big parking lot at the station where you can leave your car and also a bar and pizzeria.

Terranera Beach on the island of Elba, Italy

3. Enjoying The Beaches Of Porto Azzurro

If hiking in the mountains isn’t your thing and you have come to Elba for the beaches and water sports, you’ll find no shortage of either. The Elba beaches are partially sandy and partially pebbles, so there is something for every taste.

Porto Azzurro is a charming seaside town, dominated by the massive 17th-century San Giacomo Fort that stands on the promontory. Located in the southeast part of the island, Porto Azzurro shed its past as a civil prison when tourism started to develop and is now one of the most visited places on Elba. Not only is the pretty village full of narrow streets of quaint shops, but it’s also near three fabulous beaches. They are Terranera Beach , with its pool of an emerald green sulfur lake and shiny black sand, Reale Beach, and Barbarossa Beach . The latter is a mixture of sand and shingle, but very smooth and dark in color. The beach can be reached from Porto Azzurro by a short scenic pathway that follows the lower wall of San Giacomo Fort. There is also a hotel, and on all the beaches you will find beach clubs and restaurants that provide you with sun loungers.

If you prefer fine, golden sand, you have to head to the southwest side of the island, to Marina di Campo and the famous Fetovaia Beach . Blue water, granite cliffs, and lots of green vegetation contrast beautifully with the color of the sand.

The town of Capoliveri on the coast of Elba

4. Visiting Capoliveri

Capoliveri is an enticing, larger town on the south coast of Elba. Its special attraction lies in the fact that it is a medieval town located on a hill with a great view over the south. Squares, narrow streets, and plenty of steps, often running below archways and lined with balconies bursting with flowers, give this town a special charm. Capoliveri was long connected to the now-defunct Mines of Calamita , which are a popular tourist attraction to explore. During your visit, you can enter into the Ginevro mine with a guided tour and learn all about the hard work of the miners in the Museum of the Workshop. Capoliveri celebrates its mining past with a festival at the end of May.

Not only is the history of Capoliveri captivating, but the beaches are a special attraction as well. Lacona Beach , nearly a mile of golden sand and the second-longest beach on Elba, is the only beach that still has sand dunes left. It is popular with young people and has bars, restaurants, and beach clubs that provide amenities. There are also parts that are free and where you can just spread your towel.

The wreck of the Elviscot off the coast of Elba

5. Diving And Snorkeling

Whether you are an experienced scuba diver or prefer to stick to snorkeling, there are over 30 sites on Elba where you can carry out this activity. They are mostly to be found on the northern side . In the southwest, one of the most exciting experiences is diving the wreck off of Pomonte . In 1972, an Italian cargo ship by the name of Elviscot was shipwrecked on Ogliers’ rock and sank, now lying on the bottom of the sea completely covered with marine organisms and a habitat for fish. The bridge and engine room of the ship can safely be dived.

Capo di Colvo is for experienced divers, while Punta della Madonna takes you down a sea wall and nearer the surface to come to the statue of a Madonna. For more information and alternative sites, visit the Ondasub Diving Center in Marina di Campo.

Cardinalfish; Elba Island, Italy

6. The Aquarium

If you want to see the sea life but neither scuba dive nor are fond of snorkeling, you can visit the popular aquarium in Marina di Campo. Over 50,000 visitors per year find their way to what is considered one of the most complete aquariums of the Mediterranean. 80 tanks house over 1,150 different species of marine life.

7. Moncione Mill

Another interesting look into the island’s past is to be had with a visit to the Moncione Mill . It is one of the largest and most beautiful water mills on Elba, deep in the countryside and standing on a promontory overlooking the sea and facing Montecristo and Pianosa. The mill was enlarged and made more productive in 1880 until production ceased in 1910. The wheat was transported up to the mill on donkeys’ backs, and the flour came back down the same way.

The building is still standing and can be visited, as can the millpond and some of the cogs.

  • In the summer months of July and August, it can get very crowded because the Italians enjoy their summer break.
  • A lot of walking is required, either in the countryside or the cities, so make sure you are reasonably fit and have good shoes.

Elba Island, view on the town of Portoferraio

Elba Island – Where Tuscan Charm Meets Seaside Serenity

Although it’s not well known by US visitors, Elba Island is truly a delightful destination in Italy. It’s the largest of the seven main islands that make up the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. Following Sicily and Sardinia, Elba is the third biggest island in Italy .

Elba has a rich history. It was inhabited by the Etruscans and the Romans, and it harbored the exiled Napoleon Bonaparte in 1814. Museums, residences, and architecture on the island highlight its past for visitors. However, Elba is most enjoyed for its tropical-like landscapes and outdoor activities . The white sand beaches and turquoise water will make you feel like you’re in the Caribbean, so it’s the perfect destination if you want a change from Tuscany’s vineyards.

However, there’s a lot you should know about Elba Island before heading there. Let’s dive into how to get there, where to stay, what to do, and more.

Where is Elba Island?

Elba is located off the western shore of Italy , nestled in between Tuscany and the French island of Corsica.

It’s only 10 km west of the mainland city of Piombino , and 50 km east of Corsica. Elba Island is situated in the Tyrrhenian Sea, part of the larger Mediterranean.

10 Places to See on the Elba Island

Dozens of towns, hundreds of shops, and endless winding cobbled streets await you. Museums guard intriguing history from the ancient to the Victorian era. Historical centers, parks, and a spa are just some of the many places that call out to visitors.

1. Portoferraio

Volterraio Castle (Castello del Volterraio), in the Portoferraio municipality

The main town of Elba is Portoferraio, which is situated on a harbor on the north side of the island.

Architectural beauty and ancient history shine through museums, fortresses, and churches. Villa delle Grotte and Villa della Linguella offer glimpses into ancient Roman life, while the Medici fortresses offer more recent history.

The town, with its colorful buildings and lively ambiance, leaves visitors enamored. Here, there is no shortage of shops or restaurants. You’ll find everything from seafood restaurants to lounge bars to local boutiques.

2. Residence of Napoleon Bonaparte

The residence where Napoleon lived when he was in exile on the island of Elba

When Napoleon was exiled to Elba in 1814, he had two residences in Portoferraio. One residence, Villa di San Martino, was reserved for his private life.

Palazzina dei Mulini, on the other hand, was Napoleon’s residence with respect to his public life and representation in exile.

Still today, visitors can tour the extravagant rooms of the two-storied building.

3. Capoliveri

Artists' road in Capoliveri, Elba Island

Capoliveri is a charming comune on the southeastern part of Elba Island.

From the top of the hill, you can see a stunning Mediterranean landscape. Like Portoferraio, the rustic buildings feature bright orange terracotta roofs, adding to the beauty of Capoliveri.

Explore nearby coves, hike along green trails, and enjoy beach activities. Check out the squares of the old village, the shops and bistros, and the medieval streets.

4. Mineral Park

Elba Island has almost 3,000 years of mining culture characterized by iron extraction. The Mineral Park of Elba Island preserves this aspect of the area’s heritage.

Visitors can observe mineral displays in the science museum and tour the 3 mines .

The tour covers the main iron mining sites, each of which is marked by a specific color. You can hike between the key tour points or take a small red train.

Either way, you’ll come across unreal views of otherworldly landscapes painted red and orange. Don’t forget to check out the unique red pond in the Cantiere Conche.

5. Sant’Ilario al Campo

The panoramic view of Sant'Ilario al Campo, on the island of Elba

Sant’Ilario al Campo is a humble village located just west of Elba’s center. With less than 200 inhabitants, it offers an opportunity to experience welcoming Italian culture.

The hamlet’s parish church is one of its architectural stars. Beyond the Chiesa di Sant’Ilario in the center, the village is surrounded by stone remnants of medieval life.

Sant’Ilario al Campo is rich in splendid beryl ore and tourmaline, so keep your eyes peeled for green crystals in the natural surroundings.

6. Terme San Giovanni

This luxurious spa is located conveniently in the capital of Portoferraio, just near the shore.

Terme San Giovanni offers a plethora of relaxing services, including body massages, facial masks, manicures, and more.

There are also saunas and pools, making the spa a great option if you want to get in the water when the sea is cold.

7. Porto Azzurro

A seafront path near Porto Azzurro

After Portoferraio, Porto Azzurro is one of the most well-known communes on Elba Island. The fishing town is bordered by deep blue Mediterranean water on one side and lush greenery on the other.

Porto Azzurro, which translates to blue port, features a fascinating historical and artistic heritage.

The churches of San Giacomo Maggiore and Madonna del Carmine radiate elegance. The Madonna di Monserrato Sanctuary, just 600 meters from Porto Azzurro, was built in the seventeenth century by Spaniards that were occupying the area.

8. Marina di Campo

Marina di Campo is the town nearest to La Pila Airport, so it’s especially appealing to those who arrive on the island by plane.

Like many of the other towns of Elba, Marina di Campo has no shortage of places and monuments of interest.

The San Mamiliano and San Gaetano churches are small but wonderful slices of culture. There are examples of military and civil architecture as well, such as the Torre di Marina di Campo.

9. Acquario dell’Elba

A fish photographed at the aquarium on the island of Elba

Not far from Marina di Campo is the Elba Aquarium . The private organization is considered to be one of the most complete existing Mediterranean aquariums.

More than 150 types of marine organisms can be found here, including species of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and more.

10. Santuario della Madonna del Monte

The entrance to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte, on the island of Elba

Sitting on the slopes of Mount Giove is the Santuario della Madonna del Monte. Encompassed by nature, the sanctuary is truly a getaway from the bustling port towns.

It is thought to be one of the oldest sanctuaries on Elba, dating back to the 12th century Romanesque period. The work was commissioned by Grimaldi, a government official of the area.

After it was constructed, it was embellished and enlarged in the following centuries.

Today, visitors can still check out the sanctuary’s two elevated areas, unique windows ad bell tower.

How to get to Elba Island

Thanks to regular sea and air connections, the island of elba can be conveniently reached at any time of the year.

Wild and unspoiled Elba, super-equipped and state-of-the-art, in each case all to be discovered. There are truly many opportunities to experience the sea along the more than 147 kilometers of coastline: long golden sandy shores, tiny pebble coves, black sand beaches, others of the whitest pebbles, and towering granite cliffs and basalts. Impossible not to find the perfect one for you.

The island can be reached from the Port of Piombino in one hour by ferry. The ships all depart from the Port of Piombino for connections to Portoferraio (about a 60-minute crossing) and–with less frequency–Rio Marina and Cavo (about 45 and 35 minutes).

There is also the possibility of a fast connection via Toremar hydrofoil, reserved only for passenger transport to Cavo (about 20 minutes) and continuation to Portoferraio (another 15 minutes, for a total of 35 minutes).

12 Reasons to Visit Elba, the Italian Island You've Never Heard of

Elba Island

If you haven’t visited Elba yet, you need to – right now. This lovely small island is destined to be turned into one of the coolest destinations of the decade. Let’s read our 12 reasons to visit it.

Swim in pristine waters.

Elba is a small island located in the Tuscan archipelago (and is part of the region ). It is not famous like Sicily or Sardinia, which are the largest islands of Italy, but is magnificent. It is lapped by pristine turquoise waters perfect to swim in during the summer.

Avoid Crowds

Eat excellent fish gastronomy.

Being an island, Elba has several fish restaurants. Every morning, fishermen go offshore and fish all day. Then, in the late afternoon, they bring their catch to the restaurants of the islands. Don’t forget to order cozze alla marinara , linguine allo scoglio and calamari alla griglia .

Visit the Mediterranean Aquarium

Elba is home to a small but very beautiful aquarium. It is not as famous as the Oceanografic of Valencia or Acquario di Genova , but it’s a nice place to spend few hours. We strongly recommend visiting if you are traveling with kids!

Sports enthusiasts need to know that Elba is the ideal location for them as well. They will find hiking, biking, kayaking and trekking. Lazier visitors can spend their days on the beaches relaxing.

Diving in Elba is one of the coolest things you can do; the water is some of the cleanest in Italy, and you can even snorkel to admire the colours, fish and natural views under water. One of the best places to go to dive is Formiche della Zanca, where caves and cavities give a rare and colourful spectacle of Mediterranean flora and fauna.

Visit a Medici’s Ideal Town

Like many other places in Tuscany, Elba has been linked to the Medici family. Cosimo de’ Medici imagined a city, Cosmopoli, dedicated to him; it was founded by the architects Giovanni Camerini and Bernardo Buontalenti. A sign of the Medici domination is still visible today in Forte Falcone, an imposing fortress in Porto Ferraio appearing to welcome those about to set foot on the island.

Visit Untouched Hamlets

The island is home to many historical hamlets that have remained unchanged and remind one of a unique tradition of flavours and colours. To know more about its history Portoferraio is well worth a visit, with its interesting history seeping from the streets and walls of the old town.

For its Ancient History

Only few people know that Elba is connected to Napoleon. He has been an extremely important character for the island, which still celebrates him and preserves his major works, such as villas, theatres, museums and houses. One of the best examples of this is Villa dei Mulini, an ancient Medici villa refurbished and redesigned by Napoleon.

It Has Been Visited by Cool people

Except for Napoleon, also Alexandre Dumas was in Elba in the mid-19th century; the island of Monte Cristo is just off Elba – visible but, because a nature reserve, not visitable. Also Paul Klee was there, sketching, and, in 1947, Dylan Thomas landed in the mining area of Rio Marina and defined Elba the most beautiful island of the Mediterranean.

Elba is very rich in iron, and its mines are renowned. A visit to the Calamita mines in Capoliveri is strongly recommended. The history of these mines goes back thousands of years, from the Etruscan-era to 1980, when they were closed. Iron has always been the main resource of the town and made the island a central point of the Mediterranean trade routes. A descent down into the Ginevro mine is a must: It is the only underground mine on the island that is still accessible.

To Admire Terrific Sunsets

One of the most romantic things you can do in Elba Island is to admire the sunset with your partner. The island offers spectacular views over the Tyrrenean Sea, especially in the summer months when the sky is coloured with shades of red, orange and yellow.

Ten reasons why the island of Elba is worth visiting

In the film Manhattan, Woody Allen described the 10 things that make life worth living; we have created a top ten of sunsets not to be missed, flavours to be enjoyed at least once, activities that are a must while on holiday… All this to ensure that the island of Elba is not merely one of the many locations visited, but remains a part of you.

1 Not all of us will have heard of this place before, which is good, as it means that it will remain an intimate place! For those who enjoy walks surrounded by nature, the walk up to the Madonna del Monte is not to be missed. The view from up here is unique and the walk is anything but arduous and tiring, but pleasant and stunning. The more romantically inclined can also enjoy the unique experience of a concert in the Monastery of Santa Caterina. The acoustics are “naturally” spectacular and the displays exciting!

2 For those arriving on the island by ferry, the first place which grabs your attention is Forte Falcone, its imposing and linear structure appearing to welcome those about to set foot on the island. Some of its rooms give the impression of returning to the time of Cosmopoli, the city imagined and founded by Cosimo de’ Medici, built thanks to architects of the calibre of Giovanni Camerini and Bernardo Buontalenti. A journey through paintings, sketches and explanations describes the history of the “ideal” city of Cosmopoli, from its foundation in 1548 to the influence of the later Medici dukes and up to recent times.

3 The island is a series of historical hamlets that have remained unchanged and remind one of a unique tradition of flavours and colours. Portoferraio is well worth a visit, with its interesting history seeping from the streets and walls of the old town.

4 Napoleon was an extremely important figure for the island, which still celebrates him and preserves his major works, such as villas, theatres, museums and houses with the utmost care and attention. Villa dei Mulini is a good example of this. An ancient Medici villa refurbished and redesigned by Napoleon as a residence for Maria Luisa, it was then used by his sister Pauline and remained the Emperor’s favourite place.

5 Elba is very rich in iron and its mines are renowned; a visit to the Calamita mines in Capoliveri is recommended. The history of these mines goes back thousands of years, from the Etruscans right up to 1980, when they were closed. Iron has always been the main resource of the town, and made the island a central point of the Mediterranean trade routes. A descent down into the Ginevro mine is interesting, as it is the only underground mine on the island that is still accessible.

6 The fact that the island is rich in history does not mean that relaxing and doing nothing is forbidden, enjoying the sea and sun as a way of recharging your batteries. Among the most authentic and wild places are the rugged cliffs at Capo Sant’Andrea and the beautiful white pebble beach at Sansone.

visit elba island

7 Sports enthusiasts probably already know that they will find the perfect combination of the sea and conditions for their own sports here, but the more lazy minded can also enjoy new ways of discovering nature, by kayaking, mountain biking and trekking, with marked paths for all levels of skill.

8 If the views, perfumes and colours are mind blowing above sea level, the environment below the waves is unique and unrepeatable. The water is among the cleanest in Italy and will open your eyes to incredible natural views to be enjoyed while snorkelling, either with or without a guide. Of all the places to see, the Formiche della Zanca are a must; cliffs plunging down into the sea, where the crevices, caves and cavities give a rare and colourful spectacle of Mediterranean flora and fauna.

9 When holidaying on an island, not taking a boat trip and exploring the bays, gulfs and nearby islands, especially Pianosa, is unthinkable. On the clearest days, the mountains of Corsica can be seen in the distance from here, and the island is characterised by Tropical colours and flowers which grow even on the cliffs. It is dominated by Forte Teglia, its oldest building, which was built by Napoleon Bonaparte as a lookout point.

10 Last, but not least, on the list is the advice to enjoy the perfumes of this land, historically reach in terracing and vineyards, and thus the birthplace of much sought after wines. A Wine Tour is a must, a real journey among the vineyards and winemakers, enjoying the wine tastings on offer.

Idris Elba Dreams to Build An Eco-City in His Fathers Country

I dris Elba recently shared his ambitious vision to transform an island off the coast of Sierra Leone into an environmentally friendly smart city. The island, Sherbro Island, is situated apart from the African mainland by the Sherbro River and is 230 square miles. Initially Elba dreamed of developing the island to withstand tourism development for its stunning 19 miles of beachfront, he explained to BBC.

But Siaka Stevens, Elba’s childhood friend who grew up with him in east London, recognized the need for a more impactful initiative. Thus, their company, Sherbro Alliance Partners (SAP), began a groundbreaking project to build an eco city through a public-private partnership with the Sierra Leonean government and several influential firms.

Inspiration Behind The Vision

Idris Elba was born to parents, a mother from Ghana and father from Sierra Leone, who immigrated to London in the 70s. His father had a tremendous impact on his life, but unfortunately passed away from cancer in 2013. Elba revealed he draws inspiration for activism from his father’s experiences working in London. Elba fondly recalls his father’s tales about his workers union, where he tirelessly advocated for the rights of workers to CNBC.

Reflecting on his father’s commitment to giving voice to the voiceless, Elba emphasized the importance of using one’s privilege to speak up and use your platform to give to those who may not have the same opportunity. He credits his father’s encouragement for instilling in him the value of advocacy and the drive to give back.

Environmental Benefits

An eco city is a concept that prioritizes sustainability and environmental consciousness in urban development. Many countries, like Sierra Leone, face various environmental and economic challenges. Eco cities can serve as crucial resources, offering sustainable and affordable solutions to issues such as energy consumption, waste management, and climate resilience. By blending modern infrastructure, cultural values, and a respect for nature, these cities provide not only environmental benefits but also economic growth and community empowerment.

“The character of the island hopefully will remain intact. It’s a beautiful, green part of the world and we don’t want to disturb that,” he said to BBC.

“It’s about being self-reliant, it’s about bringing an economy that feeds itself and has growth potential. I’m very keen to reframe the way Africa is viewed … as an aid model. This opportunity is completely different,” he added.

Elba and Stevens outlined three core principles for their project. They are honoring African cultural values , designing adaptable infrastructure, and adhering to eco city principles. Stevens explained that the islands fuel will come from clean energy sources. The plan includes partnerships with major firms. For example, the energy company Octopus will help establish Sierra Leone’s first wind farm on the island. Whats more is their commitment to community engagement. The pair met with residents of the island and consult with local leaders to ensure communal satisfaction.

Elba and Stevens hope to begin more of the project after the necessary research concludes. But they know this process is likely to last decades. Elba’s passion for the project is evident. And despite acknowledging the lengthy timeline and complexities involved, Elba stands firm in his dream.

“It’s a dream, you know, but I work in the make-believe business,” he said to BBC.
