For about four weeks each year, Surprise welcomes baseball fans of the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers out to its ballpark during Cactus League Spring Training . But, if you’re looking for things to do and places to eat the other 11 months of the year, you’ve come to the right place.

Just 45 minutes northwest of  Downtown Phoenix , this cozy suburb offers a slower pace for those who seek it. Farm stands and citrus ranches beckon those looking to pick their own fruits and shop other locally made goods. Navel oranges, lemons, tangerines, tangelos and grapefruit are among the groves to meander at Cotton Lane Citrus and Justice Brothers – the latter of which is the longest continually operated citrus orchard in the state of Arizona and also hosts a pumpkin patch each fall.

There are also plenty of parks to explore, and don’t miss a self-guided tour of the Surprise Women’s Heritage Trail. Vista Center For the Arts hosts an eclectic range of or musicians, singers and bands, ranging from the Arizona philharmonic to a Selena tribute group. If you’re visiting with little ones, the horses, rabbits, chickens, ducks, sheep and goats at the West Valley Petting Zoo are excited to make their acquaintance.

Rio Mirage Cafe serves up authentic, Sonoran-style Mexican recipes that have been handed down for generations. Surprise is also home to State 48 Brewery’s original location. Opened in 2016, this  local favorite  is home to a 10-barrel system that produces the brand’s seasonal and specialty beers — pair with a Neapolitan-style pizza fresh out of the wood-fired oven.

10 Best Things to Do in Surprise, Arizona

Gage Skidmore

Surprise was little more than a gas station and few small houses in 1938 when founder, Homer Charles Ludden, a Glendale real estate developer and state legislator, subdivided the rural square mile parcel into low-cost home sites for the area's agricultural workers. He named it after his southeast Nebraska hometown and today, it's a 74-square-mile city on the move.

Flanked by one of Arizona's largest mountain preserves and situated in the saguaro-dotted Sonoran Desert on the northwestern edge of the  Valley of the Sun , it's no surprise that Surprise was named Arizona's fastest growing city several times after the 2010 U.S. Census. It is one of the 10 most populous cities in Arizona.

If you are driving to Surprise (public transportation options are slim to this area), travel time from Phoenix varies; it's always a great day trip from the city. If you'd rather stay the night, there are also many great  hotels in the Surprise area .

Take a Dip at the Aquatic Center of Surprise

 Surprise City Gov

If you're looking for some cool and affordable summer fun, Surprise's 10,562-square-foot Aquatics Center takes swimming beyond the box. It includes a 4,700-square-foot water play area with zero depth entry, eight-lane competitive pool, diving well with two one-meter boards, two slides, a vortex whirlpool, a classroom, concessions, and swim lessons. However, keep in mind open swim hours at the pool are only available during the summer months.

Cool Off at Local Water Parks and Splash Pads

Tempe Marketplace

You don't need a huge aquatic center to make the little ones happy; they can have all the cool, summer fun they need at one of Surprise's splash pads or water parks. With many public parks free of charge to choose from, you're sure to find a great place for your younger children to play. Splash pads and water parks typically open in late spring or at the beginning of summer and stay in operation until late fall.

Explore White Tank Regional Park

If you're ready for an outdoor adventure, hike or bike to a rare desert waterfall at White Tank Regional Park located on the western edge of Surprise. Waterfall Trail is a very popular and easy hike, suitable for the entire family. Tee Up at Championship Golf Courses

Arizona Traditions Golf Club

Surprise is home to seven different professional golf courses, so if you and your family are fans, hit the greens at one of Surprise's championship golf courses. You can also check out the Arizona Traditions Golf Club , the Granite Falls Golf Club's North and South Courses, the Great Eagle Golf Club, and the Coyote Lakes Golf Club.

Cheer on the Kansas City Royals or Texas Rangers

Even the Kansas City Royals and  Texas Rangers  decided to take up residence here. The once-sleepy square-mile farming community surprised just about everyone when it successfully courted the two teams away from their Florida training homes.

Catch a game for Cactus League Baseball in Surprise. Here, you can see the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers in action at their $48-million, 10,560-seat, multi-use stadium. The Cactus League Spring Training facility and stadium, along with a  regional library ,  aquatic center , recreation center, and 57-acre passive park are the centerpieces of the downtown development, putting Surprise well on its way to becoming the playground of the  West Valley . 9 Best Things To Do In Charming Surprise, Arizona

visit surprise az

Shannon M Smock / Shutterstock

  • Destinations
  • United States

A Sonoran Desert setting, a dizzying array of entertainment choices, and a booming housing market have combined to make Surprise, Arizona, a favorite among both winter visitors and retirees.

Add in a rugged mountain range nearby and a charming name, and the city in the northwestern reaches of the Phoenix metro area has plenty of appeal for tourists and young families as well.

Surprise famously got its name back in the 1930s when town founder Flora Mae Statler said she would be “surprised if the town ever amounted to much.” Decades later, her modest prediction turned out to be a colossal case of underestimation when Surprise began attracting tens of thousands of retirees in the 1990s and 2000s.

Today, Surprise has a population of about 142,000 — up from 7,200 in 1990 — making it the 10th-largest city in Arizona.

For the thousands of “snowbirds” who flock to the Phoenix area from November to April each year to escape the snow and ice in the northern United States and Canada, Surprise offers a range of winter and spring pastimes that include everything from pro baseball to hiking to shopping to golf. Here are nine of the best things to do in Surprise.

Petroglyphs along the Waterfall Trail in Surprise, Arizona.

Cindy Barks

1. Hike To A Seasonal Waterfall

You will need a bit of luck to see the actual waterfall in the White Tank Mountains , but don’t let that discourage you from checking out the Waterfall Trail.

Water cascading over a steep rock wall in the craggy White Tanks is certainly a sight to see, but it happens only after heavy rainfall (or in the rare event of snowfall in the higher elevations). When I did the hike on a dry, sunny day in early December, I asked a half-dozen other hikers if they had ever seen the waterfall in its full glory, and none had.

Still, the Waterfall Trail is worth the 1.8-mile roundtrip walk. The easy trail begins as a wide concrete path that winds through lovely desert/mountain terrain and ends with a short climb through a rocky section.

Along the way, the trail also passes by a series of boulders that are so rich with prehistoric rock art from the ancient Hohokam People that the area is known as Petroglyph Plaza. For me, the fascinating petroglyphs more than made up for the lack of water in the falls.

Although White Tank Mountain Regional Park is located in the nearby community of Waddell, the mountains rise from the border of Surprise, and the park is just a 15-mile drive away. While you’re in the White Tanks, be sure to check out some of the 30 miles of other trails that range from easy to strenuous. Note that entry to the park requires a fee .

2. Take In Spring Training At Surprise Stadium

Along with many of its sister cities in the Phoenix metro area, Surprise capitalizes on its gorgeous spring weather to offer a taste of Major League Baseball, with a full schedule of Cactus League Spring Training games.

The Surprise Stadium hosts the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers and also holds a series of nationally ranked baseball tournaments throughout the year in partnership with accredited sports organizations.

The stadium, which was listed as the number one Spring Training stadium in Arizona by USA Today in 2018, boasts a family-friendly atmosphere, a fun fan experience, and signature foods such as the tamale dog — a jumbo hotdog placed inside a green chili tamale and topped with salsa and jalapeno relish — as well as high-heat dogs that feature Sriracha-infused ketchup and Caribe pepper-infused mustard.

Surprise Lake in Arizona.

3. Cast A Line At Surprise Lake

For a glimpse into the heart of the community, stop by the sprawling Surprise Community Park on a weekend afternoon. You’re likely to find young couples pushing strollers, kids riding bikes, teenagers shooting hoops in the basketball court, and retirees playing pickleball.

In the center of it all is the park’s pretty 5-acre lake , which attracts anglers trying to catch largemouth bass, channel catfish, sunfish, and rainbow trout — all stocked as sportfish for recreation.

A pho lunch at Saigon Kitchen in Surprise, Arizona.

4. Have A Pho Lunch At Saigon Kitchen

Tucked into Surprise’s many shopping centers and outdoor malls is an abundant array of restaurants serving everything from Indian cuisine to Mexican fare to Italian foods.

For something different, check out the popular Saigon Kitchen with its modern take on traditional Vietnamese cuisine. The menu is extensive, but the standout choice appears to be the pho, a rich noodle soup featuring a choice of steak, chicken, shrimp, or short ribs. The generous bowls of flavorful soup come with an attractive presentation of bean sprouts, basil, lime, and jalapenos.

A list of Surprise’s many restaurant choices is available on the Explore Surprise website .

5. Explore The Surprise Women’s Heritage Trail

Ever since Flora Mae Statler founded Surprise, women have played an important role in the town’s development. In 2013, the town launched the Surprise Women’s Heritage Trail to commemorate that role with a self-guided tour to about 15 spots around town where women have made their mark.

The trail includes stops such as the Bi-Centennial Park, for which Statler’s daughter donated the land, and the site of the old Saylor’s Root Beer Stand, where Nellie Saylor is said to have played a critical role in establishing and running the family businesses, including the root beer stand, a skating rink, and a trading post.

State 48 Brewery in Surprise, Arizona.

6. Try A Local Brew At State 48

With five locations around the Phoenix area, the popular State 48 Brewery has roots in Surprise with its original location featuring a 10-barrel system. Today, State 48’s seasonal and specialty beers are brewed at the Surprise location.

The distinctive steel-sided Surprise brewery also has a full kitchen with a wood-fired pizza oven featuring Neapolitan-style pizza. For a unique flavor combo, try the fig and prosciutto pizza with dried figs, prosciutto di Parma, mozzarella, arugula, and balsamic reduction. Pair it with a local brew like Lost Dutchman golden ale or White Tank wheat.

To take advantage of the sunny winter and spring weather, ask to be seated on State 48’s Surprise spacious outdoor patio. The space is dog-friendly and features high-top tables and games like cornhole and giant Jenga and Connect 4.

7. Play A Round At A Championship Golf Course

The Phoenix metro area is known worldwide as a golfing destination, and Surprise more than holds its own among the communities in the Valley of the Sun with its eight courses, and 61 courses within 20 miles of the community.

The city of Surprise website lists eight nearby courses, including the Arizona Traditions Golf Club and Coyote Lakes Golf Club in Surprise, plus the Cimarron Golf Course and Desert Springs Golf Course in the nearby Sun City Grand community.

8. Unwind At Uptown Alley

Forty lanes of bowling, two stories of laser tag, billiards tables, and a sports theater all await at the Uptown Alley , a mega-entertainment center located near Surprise’s city center.

The alley is known as a spot where families meet up for birthday parties, groups gather for bowling and appetizers, and sports fans get together to take in pro sports games on the 10-foot projections screens.

Along with family fun and league play, the entertainment center offers dining and drinks at its Red Embers Bar and Grill. The lively shopping area around the alley also offers a range of other stores, eateries, and breweries.

A mural in downtown historical Wickenburg, Arizona.

9. Take A Day Trip To Wickenburg

While Surprise has the urban entertainment scene covered, small-town Arizona history is just a short drive away in the Western town of Wickenburg .

Located about 35 miles northwest of Surprise along Highway 60, Wickenburg makes the perfect day trip from the West Valley. Billed as the town of “horses, hats, history, and hospitality,” it offers a pleasant contrast to the busy streets of Surprise.

The historic ranching and gold-mining town has roots dating back to the 1860s and 1870s and features a number of reminders of the rough-and-tumble mining days, such as the Jail Tree Walkway and Outlaw Avenue, where a tree and sculpture mark the spot where outlaws were once chained.

The best way to experience Wickenburg is to stroll along its quaint streets and stop for refreshments or shopping at the many open-air cafes and Western-ware stores.

Wickenburg was once known as the “dude ranch capital of the world,” and for those who want to extend their visit beyond a day trip, several of the historic guest ranches remain today, including the Rancho de los Caballeros and the Flying E Ranch .

Winter, with average high temperatures in the 60-degree range, is a great time for a visit to Surprise. Late fall and early spring are also good times to visit, with October, November, March, and April all posting average highs in the 70s and 80s. Like the rest of the Phoenix area, Surprise is hot in the summer, with average highs above the 100-degree mark from June through September. For more inspiration, consider:

Top 13 Things To Do In Surprise (AZ)

An unusual name at the best of times, Surprise ( Arizona ) was christened as such by Flora Mae Statler who, in 1938, had commented ironically that she “would be surprised if the town ever amounted to much.” Well, contrary to her lack of confidence, Surprise has defied expectations and grown to a population of approximately 118,000 as of 2010. It has become the sixth fastest-growing area in all of Arizona, boasting remarkable amenities such as a 10,562 sq ft Aquatics Center and a $5.5 million 20,000 sq ft regional library, among many other surprises!

Now, as someone who find wonders in travelling, allow me to join you and let’s dive into the list of the best things to do in Surprise and uncover even more delightful surprises this town has to offer.

1. Surprise Stadium

Surprise Stadium

The Surprise Stadium holds a special place in the hearts of locals, and it’s easy to see why. This stadium serves as the spring training home for both the Texas Rangers and the Kansas City Royals. Additionally, it hosts the Arizona Fall League’s Surprise Saguaros, making it a hub of baseball activity. While it was once the home of the Golden Baseball League’s Surprise Fightin’ Falcons, who unfortunately folded after their first season in 2005, the stadium itself was not to blame for their short-lived tenure.

One of the reasons the Surprise Stadium is so beloved is its convenient entrance and exit, allowing for a seamless game-day experience. Moreover, the stadium is a beautiful park in its own right. When it comes to dining options, there is a wide variety of food available, ranging from mouthwatering chicken grills to delicious Mexican and Chinese cuisine. The separate practice areas for each team ensure that the players can prepare for the game efficiently.

It’s worth mentioning that when notable teams like the AZ Diamondbacks or the Chicago Cubs come to town, it’s wise to secure your tickets in advance. The atmosphere during these games is electric, and it’s a fantastic opportunity to witness top-tier baseball in a remarkable setting.

2. Pick your own breakfast fruit straight from the tree at Justin Brothers Ranch

Tangelo

Imagine having a breakfast experience like no other, or any meal you desire. Every weekend from December to March, the Justin Brothers Ranch opens its doors to everyone, offering a unique opportunity for you and your family to handpick your own fruit from the trees of your choosing! The best part? All the fruit on the farm is pesticide-free, ensuring a wholesome and natural experience. With hundreds of varieties available, ranging from luscious grapefruits to juicy oranges, tangelos, lemons, and more, there’s a plethora of flavors to explore.

As the kids have a blast picking their favorite fruits, the rest of the family can mingle with other visitors on the ranch, creating unforgettable memories together. It’s even possible to run into Mr. Truman himself, the owner, who is passionate about discussing the distinctive flavors found in his extensive collection of fruit varieties.

At Justin Brothers Ranch, the joy of savoring the freshest fruit goes beyond just a delightful meal—it’s an immersive experience that brings you closer to nature and the bountiful offerings of the land. So, grab your baskets and embark on a fruitful adventure at this charming ranch.

3. Digiplex Surprise IMAX

Movie Theater

Looking for a top-notch cinema experience in Surprise? Look no further than beloved Cineplex, renowned for its exceptional offerings. Equipped with 3D and jumbo digital screens, this cinema showcases first-run films, captivating sports events, and even mesmerizing opera productions.

When you step into Cineplex, prepare to be immersed in a world of cinematic magic. Our excellent sound system ensures that you hear every dialogue and feel every beat, while the comfortable seating allows you to relax and enjoy the show to the fullest. The staff is not only capable but also friendly, ensuring that your experience is smooth and enjoyable from start to finish.

Of course, a trip to the movies isn’t complete without some delectable treats. That’s why their food concession offers a wide range of options, from classic popcorn and chocolate to indulgent milkshakes. Treat your taste buds while you indulge in a thrilling cinematic experience.

It’s worth noting that Cineplex may receive the latest releases slightly later than other theaters. However, this means you won’t have to worry about overwhelming crowds or long lines. You can enjoy your movie in a more relaxed atmosphere, savoring every moment without feeling rushed.
