Tall ship windy chicago sailing reviews.

We went on the "pirate" cruise. They told tales of actual Lake Michigan pirates and made it very entertaining for the kids and the adults. I want to go on this cruise again!

We went on the Lakeside Architecture Tour. It was a very educational and relaxing seventy-five minutes. I highly recommend the experience.

I've set sail on Tall Ship Windy 4-5 times over the past few years, and it is always a good time. You get a nice view of the city and the crew is entertaining and knowledgeable.

If you want humor, entertainment, and an inclusive experience for young and the old, don’t miss this! I appreciate everything about this adventure, and Austin you’re the best!

Had a wonderful sail on a chilly, overcast night! Crew was professional, friendly and informative. Would recommend this trip to anyone, so relaxing. Oh, used a Groupon, an extra bonus!

Best view of the city! Highly recommend the 7pm sail to watch the sunset between the buildings. Fun and knowledgeable crew made the Windy the highlight of our Chicago visit.

The most fun tour we’ve had of Chicago. The crew is fantastic and the tour guide is hilarious. His sense of humor really sets this tour apart from the rest, while still offering interesting insights on the city’s unique skyline. Loved it.

Loved our sail! I love sunsets and this in my opinion was the best way to experience the Chicago skyline. When I return I’d love to do another tour!

Honestly, a perfect experience. Exactly on-time departure and arrival. Perfect boat - size and look. The Captain and crew were friendly and knowledgable. My son raised the sail. Hard. Fun. An experience. The frozen drinks and cold beers were excellent. The views? Wow. A great soundtrack plays during the excursion at perfect volume level. A great time for all ages of Pirates. I guess I liked it :) Just do it. Thank me later.

The Tall Ship Windy is a must thing to do at Navy Pier. Very friendly and funny staff and always a good time, with beautiful views of the city of Chicago.

My husband and I just did the "Pirate and Maritime Stories" tour with Tall Ship Windy and it was fabulous. A lovely cruise around the Navy Pier, while hearing some fascinating pirate history about Chicago. We highly recommend this experience for any age!

I’m a life long Chicagoan and I brought my out of town relatives on this cruise and we all loved it! It was a gorgeous summer late afternoon and the city was just sparkling. I loved having a new view of the city. Crew excellent. My nephew helped hoist a sail. Narrator very entertaining and informative. I thought the price was great for the experience.

What a great experience! Beautiful and ever-changing views of the night skyline from the lake. When they hoisted the sails and turned off the motor, it was so peaceful. The incredible fireworks were the perfect ending to this cruise. Highly suggest!!

There are a bunch of fun activities to enjoy around the Navy Pier that won't cost a dime. Here are a few of our favorite things to do without worrying about money.

10. Take our Self Guided Tour of the Pier

There are a handful of notable attractions you absolutely need to see when visiting this location, and you can learn all about them using a self-guided tour of Navy Pier .

11. Walk to the East End Plaza

For gorgeous views of Lake Michigan, head to this plaza.

Once you're done looking out at the water, turn around for a great snapshot of the Chicago Skyline.

12. Enjoy the Seasonal Fireworks

On Wednesday and Saturday nights from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, there are fireworks shows at Navy Pier.

View the firework schedule .

This is one of the best free family activities to enjoy in Chicago during the summer months!

13. Enjoy a Free Event at Polk Bros Park

Located just steps away from the base of the pier, this park is one of the more popular places to meet up during the summer months, and they often host free events such as the summer film series .

14. Look for Public Art

The public art that can be found at the Pier is pretty awesome. Some of the art is rotating, but other pieces have become a special part of your pier experience.

Look for the Bob Newhart Statue, Crack the Whip statue, and the Captain on the Helm Statue.

15. Enjoy the Breeze at the Beer Garden

This is a great place to visit during the summer months and simply relax while listening to the seasonal free concerts!

If you've got some money, obviously you might also want to consider grabbing a drink!

16. Spend a Day at the Ohio Street Beach

This beautiful beach is adjacent to Navy Pier, and it's one of the nicer places to hang out during the summer if you're trying to beat the heat.

Brief History of Navy Pier

Between 1942-1945, pilot and navy training took place at the Pier and as many as 200 World War II planes still rest at the bottom of Lake Michigan as a result of accidents during training.

One of the pilots who trained there was George H. W. Bush who later became the president of the United States.

boat tours chicago navy pier

In 1994, Navy Pier began its transformation into becoming Chicago’s Playground and continues to change today.

In 2014, Navy Pier was renovated by New York architect James Corner.

And then in 2016, a new Ferris wheel called the Centennial Wheel was built at 150 feet high that operates year-round.

DIRECTIONS TO THE NAVY PIER

We highly recommend utilizing affordable and convenient public transportation to get to the Navy Pier.

Take the Red Line to the Grand stop and walk 20 minutes east towards Lake Michigan (follow the Ferris Wheel in plain sight).

Take any of the following buses: #29, #65, #69, #124 Navy Pier, #2 Hyde Park

You can use this Google Map link for directions to the Navy Pier.

Directions to Navy Pier Chicago

If you are considering purchasing a hop-on- hop-off bus ticket to transport you around Chicago, keep in mind that the Big Bus Company has a stop at the Navy Pier and a 2-day ticket to ride their double-decker buses is included with the Go Chicago Card .

If you must drive, you can find and reserve parking in advance by using Parking Panda .

Adults : $48    Seniors : $46    Youths : $26    Children 6 and under : Free

Enjoy your favorite drink while gazing Chicago’s magnificent architecture and finish your cruise with a fabulous light show, at Navy Pier!

Fireworks, one of the Four Great Inventions of ancient China were invented in the 12th century.

Chicago approved City-Wide Use of Fireworks on the 4th of July 1893. Mayor of Chicago Patrick Eugene Prendergast issued a proclamation approving the use of fireworks to celebrate the World’s Colombian Exposition and to celebrate the nation’s 117th Independence Day.

This fascination with fireworks, noise, and color continues today. The City of Chicago offers a fireworks show at Navy Pier on Wednesdays at 9:30pm and Saturday nights at 10:15pm.

Drinks may be purchased individually with a credit card on the boat. Complimentary Coca-Cola soft drinks, lemonade, and cookies are included. Depending on lock traffic, our fireworks cruise will sail along one of two routes, river only or river and lake.

Join us at 8pm on Wednesday nights and 8:30pm on Saturdays for our narrated Architectural Fireworks 2-hour Cruise. There’s something for everyone on this one of a kind cruise!

* Subject to change, depends on lock traffic and weather conditions

  • Due to heavy Lake traffic, cruises may return to dock 30 minutes later than scheduled.

This is my 8th time on a Chicago architectural river cruise and this was by far the most informative and biggest bang for your buck. Operagolf / LaHabra
The best guide on our whole USA trip. We took the Architecture tour where the boat meandered in between all of the incredible buildings of the city with the guide knowing EVERYTHING about each building; its style, age, height, architect, cost, purpose, owner ….. Quite brilliant! DrCumbrian / TripAdvisor
I've done several of the architecture cruises since my family moved to Chicago, and this is the best one yet! Allie K / TripAdvisor
If you only have time for one sight-seeing event while in Chicago, do this. We really have no great interest in architecture, but this tour came highly recommended and we did not regret it. Allice I / Oklahoma
My wife and I very much enjoyed the Chicago Line Cruise jazz cruise... My spouse said this was one of the favorite things she has done in Chicago since moving here in the past year, and I agree. I am a jazz snob, and ... I was very pleased with the music offered by the Geordie Kelly group. He's a fine jazz guitarist, and his band was great. Augie R / Yelp

Architecture Tours You Should Try in Chicago

Chicago architecture cruise.

Check rates for Chicago Architecture Cruise

If you love touring on water, then this cruise is for you. I've taken this cruise several times while showing friends the city and they loved it too.

On this cruise, you will ride the Chicago River and see the city's famous architecture. You'll see the impressive flat skyline including over 40 famous buildings such as Navy Pier, the Wrigley Building, and the John Hancock Building with audio narratives. The tour covers all three branches of the Chicago River.

Navy Pier Centennial Wheel Regular & Express

Check rates at Navy Pier Centennial Wheel

This is one of my favorite ways to see the city and the Chicago skyline. You circle only once, but the ride is super slow, and you'll have some great photo ops when you get to the top.

Navy Pier is among the most visited destinations in the world. It offers beautiful views from the wheel, and it's a must-do when in the area! Located right on the pier, you have spectacular views of the city's skyline, architecture, and waterfront.

45-Minute Private Helicopter Flight

Check rates at 45-Minute Private Helicopter Flight

I was scheduled to go on this flight but it was canceled due to bad weather. At least they are good at following safety protocol. Too bad that I missed this amazing experience by helicopter. From what I hear, you will get the best views of touring Chicago architecture, and the experience of flying amongst the clouds.

Willis Tower Skydeck and The Ledge

Check rates for Willis Tower Skydeck and The Ledge

Having been on the Skydeck a couple of times, it never disappoints. What I didn't like much was that there is a limited time that you have to stand in the box. But if there were no supervision, the line would be from the street.

But here, you will have some of the most breathtaking views of Lake Michigan. You'll also see why home is to beautiful parks and cultural attractions such as the Adler Planetarium in Millennium and the Shedd Aquarium in Grant Park.

Look north to see Chicago's iconic skyscrapers and landmarks from Lincoln Park to the world-famous Wrigley Field.

Night Tour with Willis Tower Entry & Skyline Cruise

Check rates at Night Tour with Willis Tower Entry & Skyline Cruise

This tour is a wonderful way to spend the evening while touring in Chicago. You'll immerse yourself in one of the tallest architectural buildings in Chicago along with a Chicago boat tour.

Big Bus Panoramic Sunset Tour with Live Guide

If this is your first visit to this city, this is a great way to tour Chicago , Illinois and how it shines at night. There is so much to see on both sides of the bus since the architecture of Chicago is interesting

Experience the stunning skyscrapers of Windy City that light up at night. Take a panoramic nighttime tour from the Magnificent Mile to Michigan Avenue past the Chicago Theater and Buckingham Fountain.

Chicago History, Culture, and Architecture Walking Tour

Check rates at Chicago History, Culture, and Architecture Walking Tour

This is a great way to hear about Chicago's history and architecture. Take a private stroll or share walks with family or friends for this architecture tour. You can see old and new architecture, try delicious local treats, see beautiful boats tour the river.

Chicago Architecture Center Exhibit Admission

Check rates at Chicago Architecture Center Exhibit

The Chicago Architecture Center or CAC is located at the south end of Magnificent Rock near Michigan Walker Intersection. You'll discover super-sized models of architecture from around the world.

The vouchers give you access to two floors of imaginative exhibitions at the city's newest cultural venue.

Chicago Art Deco Skyscrapers Walking Tour

Check rates at Chicago Art Deco Skyscrapers Walking

The luxurious materials and geometric decorations of Art Deco represent the opulence and optimism of the decadent 20s. Visit some of the city's most beautiful architecture and learn about the history and characteristics of this modern decorative style.

Final Thoughts on the Best Chicago Architecture Tours

These are the best ways to tour Chicago architecture and see all the unmissable attractions. I've taken every single one of these tours, including ones not mentioned and found them worth the money.

I enjoyed seeing the towering skyscrapers and iconic landmarks. The tours offer a fascinating glimpse into the architectural history of the Chicago. Not to mention, it's nice to play tourist in my own back yard.

As a visitor, be sure to plan your tour in advance and consider factors such as weather and time of day to make the most of your experience. Don't forget your camera to capture the stunning views along the way.

Whether you're an architecture enthusiast or simply looking to appreciate the city's remarkable skyline, a Chicago architecture tour is a must-do activity. The buildings are inspiring structures and some are a marvel of innovative designs that have shaped this iconic city.

Whether you go on water, in the air, or on foot , book your tour today and embark on a journey through Chicago's architectural wonders.
