L es paysages sauvages qu’évoquent les récits mythologiques au sujet de l’île de Crète sont pour la plupart bien réels. Les chances que vous y viviez des expériences stimulantes et uniques s’avèrent pour ainsi dire assez fortes. Mais encore faudrait-il savoir quand s’y rendre et quelles activités y mener ? Météo Crète novembre : à quoi s’attendre ?

Le mois de novembre en Crète est caractérisé par une durée d’ensoleillement encore très importante pour ce moment de l’année. Ce qui explique que bien des vacanciers et vacancières choisissent encore la Crète en novembre pour s’offrir un peu de luminothérapie !

Celle-ci s’élève en moyenne à 10,5h par jour.

Le risque de se faire surprendre par une pluie est néanmoins possible en cette fin d’année. Il convient donc de vérifier les prévisions météorologiques de la journée avant de sortir découvrir le Palais de Knossos, les ruelles de La Canée, Balos Beach, les Gorges de Samaria ou la vieille ville d’Héraklion !

Il faut toutefois préciser que la température varie généralement entre 6 et 13 degrés Celsius en novembre sur l’île de Candie (historiquement), mais que le réchauffement climatique actuel permet d’avoir des journées aux alentours des 20°.

Il y fait beau vivre durant cette période de l’année. C’est par conséquent une période idéale pour partir en vacances seule, en amoureux ou en famille

La Crète en novembre : quels événements ?

Que faire en Crète à ce moment de l’année ? Le mois de novembre ne coïncide pas avec les vacances scolaires. Par conséquent, il n’est pas très évident d’organiser des vacances en famille pour cette période. Mais vous ne manquerez pas pour autant de vous divertir pendant votre séjour en novembre sur l’île de Crète.

Fête de la Saint Nicolas

Plusieurs activités peuvent en effet s’y vivre. De même, vous pouvez participer à plusieurs festivals culturels sur l’île. Selon la durée de votre voyage, vous pourriez prendre part à la fête de la Saint-Nicolas appelée localement Agios Nikolaus.

Elle se déroule généralement au début du mois de décembre. Vous pourriez donc venir vers la fin du mois pour finalement partir après cette célébration.

Le Jour du Non

Si par contre vous venez sur l’île grecque vers la fin du mois d’octobre, vous pourriez célébrer avec la population le jour du NON . Vous pourriez à l’occasion assister à des défilés riches en couleurs. En plus de cela, d’autres activités peuvent se vivre sur l’île de Crète.

Crete’s weather remains pleasant in November, and it’s one of the warmest places in Europe during the fall/winter, so you’ll still have plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy during November in Crete.

Throughout this article, I’ll talk about the best things to do in Crete in November, and why it’s absolutely worth visiting in this month!

Weather in Crete in November

In November, the weather in Crete transitions from a warm and dry climate to a milder and slightly more humid climate , which continues through the winter season. 

The drop in temperature usually comes at the end of the month , so it will be relatively warm during a November holiday. 

But you should expect more cloudy days, higher humidity, and more rain. 

Although November does mark the beginning of the rainy season, with an average of 6-8 days of rain, in my experience, these showers were often brief (rarely lasting more than an hour), so there’s still plenty of time to go hiking, relax on the beach, or wander around the villages of Crete.

The average high temperature typically hovers at 18-21°C (64-69°F), which is very comfortable.

We even wore a T-shirt most days. 

However, you should pack a couple of long-sleeved shirts or a jacket because, after sunset, the temperature can drop to around 14°C (57°F).

Best Things to Do in Crete in November

As a traveler in Crete, you can typically do almost everything that’s available in the summer, but there are a few exceptions.

For example, some villages (like Loutro) completely shut down, and some tour operators, especially those who focus on boat or snorkeling trips, go on holiday for a few months.

So, it can be hard to find tour companies still accepting bookings!

Here are the best things to do in Crete in November:

1. Lounge on Empty Beaches

With a few warm days left in the year, you can still enjoy lounging on the beach in Crete during November, and you can expect them to be significantly less crowded than usual!

We recommend staying near the beaches in the Chania Region because the facilities here stay open into November. 

Elafonissi Beach, Falassarna, and Balos Beach are the most popular beaches near Chania . 

But if you don’t want to spend the whole day driving to the beach, there are some lovely beaches much closer to the town, such as Stavros Beach, Katholiko Bay, Seitan Limania , Marathi Beach – or you can visit Nea Chora Beach right in Chania!

Once you leave Chania and head south, even the most famous beaches are literally ghost towns, including Preveli Beach and Plakias Beach .

This is ideal if you just want peace and quiet but don’t expect sunbeds for rent or local vendors. 

Unfortunately, the water in Crete is pretty chilly – 68ºF (21ºC) – ok for a quick dip but too cold to enjoy snorkelling or lots of time in the ocean!

2. Spend a Day or Two in Chania

Chania is the best city to use as a base in November.

The city has loads of history, culture, shopping, and an incredible food scene. 

While the summer months bring inflated prices and heavy crowds , everything slows down in November, so you can find much cheaper accommodation, and all of the shops offer deals to sell their remaining inventory. 

The best part is the enchanting Old Town , where you can wander through narrow, stone-walled streets, explore the Old Venetian Harbour , and even visit the Chania Lighthouse !

It’s also a wonderful city for indulging in authentic Cretan cuisine.

Taste souvlaki (gyros) at Oasis , delicious coffee at MonoGram , and some traditional Moussaka at Enetikon !

Despite being off-season in the Greek Islands, Chania has enough of a local population to remain lively in November!

3. Take a Road trip through Crete

Without a doubt, the best way to explore Crete is with a rental car.

You can rent a car in Chania or Heraklion (wherever you fly into Crete) and have complete freedom to cruise the island at your own pace.

Most of the time, you can rent a car for less than $25 per day and visit multiple villages/cities/beaches per day.

So, it’s not just more exciting, but it’s cheaper than taking taxis everywhere or booking a full-day tour.

Crete is a huge place, so you’ll need a few days to see a significant portion of the island. We recommend:

• three days in the Chania region
• two days in the Rethymno region
• one day in the Heraklion region
• two days in the Lassithi Region

4. Learn about Ancient Civilizations at the Palace of Knossos

The Palace of Knossos offers a compelling glimpse into the rich history of Europe with remnants of the continents’ oldest known civilization.

The archaeological site isn’t huge (roughly 5 acres), but it dates back nearly 4,500 years to the Minoan civilization and is a must-visit in Crete.

Whether you choose to visit on your own or book a guided tour of Knossos , you’ll get to see intricate frescoes, sprawling courtyards, and ancient masterpieces like the Grand Staircase, the Royal Road, and the Throne Room. 

Many visitors pair the Palace of Knossos with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum , which holds thousands of Minoan objects found at the site.

Most of the time, I would encourage people to get here early and bring plenty of water, but with the mild temperatures and low crowds in November, it will be pleasant whenever you choose to visit!

5. Experience the Olive Harvest

November in Crete is an excellent time to observe and even participate in the olive harvest, a traditional activity that plays a substantial role in local culture and Cretan families.

The Cretan landscape has seemingly endless olive groves, which produce over 350,000 tons of olive oil each year (third-most in the world).

The harvesting season starts towards the end of October and continues into December.

In many families, harvesting olives together is a cherished tradition passed down through generations, so if you visit during November and mingle with locals, you might get the opportunity to join a day of picking olives and learn about the process of creating what locals call ‘liquid gold.’

Taking part in the olive harvest not only offers insight into Cretan culinary heritage but also presents a unique opportunity to engage with the vibrant local community and their deep-rooted love for their land.

If you don’t get the opportunity to take part in harvesting the olives, you can book a guided tour of Terra Creta to see the manufacturing process and from farm to bottle.

6. Day Trip to Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos is a beach-side town in the eastern part of Crete that is home to some of the most insta-worthy spots on the island.

The main attraction here is Lake Voulismeni, which lies at the center of town, and cafes, restaurants, bars, and boutique shops surround it.

The lake has been around since Ancient Greece and is said to be ‘bottomless’ – although that’s obviously not true!

Agios Nikolaos is a charming place to spend the afternoon having lunch or coffee, and there are some awesome beaches nearby, like Voulisima Beach and Plaka Beach. 

You can even book a boat trip to Spinolonga Island from town!

7. Go Hiking (Without the Heat!)

Another of the best parts of visiting Crete in November is hiking in mild temperatures.

The hikes in Crete along the rugged coastline, deep gorges, and interior mountains are some of the most coveted in Greece.

In November, you can’t hike in the Samaria River Gorge (there’s a high risk of flash floods), but you won’t get bored with numerous trails throughout the White Mountains, Psiloritis in the Nida Plateau, and the south coast of Crete near Loutro and Chora Sfakion.

There are some incredibly scenic, and you won’t have to bear the intense heat of summer! 

Crete in November Isn’t for You If…

You want to do a lot of swimming and snorkeling : While Crete stays relatively warm in November, the sea temperatures drop to about 19°C (67°F). This makes swimming and snorkeling less enjoyable. The ocean conditions are also rougher, so snorkeling is often impossible.

You like beach clubs and nightlife : November in Crete is the off-peak season, and many beach clubs and tourist bars close down for the winter. The vibrant nightlife and lively beach scene that characterizes the summer months is almost nonexistent.  

You want to hike the Samaria River Gorge : The Samaria River Gorge, easily the most popular hike in Crete, is closed in November due to the risk of flash floods. There are plenty of alternative hiking trails and gorges in Crete, but if your heart is set on this specific one, you should plan your visit for a different time of the year.

What to wear in Crete in November?

The weather in Crete in November is still pretty warm, so you can wear shorts, t-shirts, and light summer dresses.

That said, you will definitely need warmer clothes for the evenings and nights and for those occasional colder days. Best to bring light layers, a raincoat, and a thicker pullover.

If you’re planning to get your adventure on (more on that later), remember to bring decent footwear.

Consider renting a car

With November being out of season, you might want to consider renting your own car to make sure you don’t miss out on seeing all those charming villages and ancient wonders. 

During peak season, island-wide public transport is pretty good. Come low season, many services are seriously reduced or paused.

Hike the Samaria Gorge

Located in the southwestern part of the island, the Samaria Gorge is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and rich biodiversity. November is a fantastic time to go hiking in the gorge thanks to the weather, which is generally mild and pleasant.

Moreover, at the beginning of the autumn season, the gorge turns into a picturesque landscape of vibrant colours. It is also less crowded during this time, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the tranquility of the surroundings.

Experience local cuisine

In November, you should definitely try the regional food in Crete. Here are some suggestions for regional specialties to sample while you're there:

• Dakos: This is a traditional Cretan dish made with dried barley rusk topped with diced tomatoes, feta cheese, olives, and drizzled with olive oil.
• Boureki: A baked savoury pie consisting of layers of cheese, potatoes and sliced veggies like zucchini.
• Kalitsounia: Greek coffee is typically paired with these little pastries, which are either sweet or cheese-filled. The cheese version is usually packed with regional Cretan cheese, herbs, and occasionally mint.
• Stifado: A slow-cooked meat stew made with beef or rabbit, cooked in a rich tomato and onion sauce, flavored with various herbs and spices.

Alongside being something of an adventure hotspot, Crete has a bounty of beautiful beaches to stroll on when you need a break. All the better for enjoying relative peace in November.

If you want facilities, try beaches like Falassarna and Balos in the Chania Region — these stay open beyond the summer season.

Alternatively, for seclusion, head south, where even the most popular summertime beaches will be empty, among them Preveli and Plakias.

La Crète baigne dans un climat typiquement méditerranéen avec des étés chauds et secs, et des hivers assez doux. Au mois d’août, le thermomètre peut grimper jusqu’à 30°C et c’est en janvier qu’il fait le plus frais avec une moyenne de 15°C.

Avec un bon niveau d’ensoleillement et des hivers doux, la Crète est une destination qui est agréable toute l’année. En été, bien que les températures soient élevées, la chaleur reste supportable grâce au vent. C’est dans la partie sud de l’île où les pluies sont les moins fréquentes que le vent (le notias) souffle davantage. Au nord de l’île, les précipitations sont plus nombreuses. Dans la région montagneuse du centre avec ses sommets à plus de 2000m, la neige est souvent présente et parfois même en quantité importante. Le saviez-vous ? Le ski de randonnée se pratique en Crète avec des vues exceptionnelles sur la Méditerranée. Pour votre séjour en Crète , mieux vaut privilégier le printemps et l’automne . Visitor numbers to Crete are very low in the month of November and because of this many restaurants, bars and hotels close on or around the 31st October and the sun beds on the beaches are stored away.

November can see some wonderful sunny days but also some storms and high winds too.

November weather in Crete can see a wide range of temperatures, rainfall and sunshine. The sea temperatures are still warm enough to enjoy a swim and the beaches are almost deserted as most of the visiting tourists have gone home.

Temperatures can vary from a low 13°C to a high 21°C with an average of 17°C. Night-time temperatures can drop too making the evenings cooler. 

Rainfall can be a feature of the November weather in Crete with the possibility of few days of rain during the month. High winds and storms too can feature during the month of November in Crete. But the rainy days can be interspersed with very warm and pleasant days.

We’ve found that in November the weather in Crete can average about 4 or 5 clear blue sky and sunny days per week with very pleasant temperatures allowing for a thin jacket or cardigan rather than a heavy winter coat.

Flights to Crete in November

Flights to Crete in November are not as frequent as the summer months. In fact winter in Crete can be difficult to get to as there are no direct flights to Crete in November. You’ll need to fly to Athens and get a connecting flight from Athens to Chania, Sitia or Heraklion airport. This can work out to be quite costly in comparison to the direct cheap flights to Crete in the summer months.

Hotels in Crete in November

Visitors to Crete in November may have limited choices as to the accommodation and hotels that are open. There are some hotels open in November in Crete, particularly in the main towns of Chania, Heraklion, Rethymnon and Sitia but you may have to search long and hard to find hotels in the holiday resorts.

Things to do in Crete in November

Olive picking begins its season and is very much in evidence in November in Crete. If you are visiting Crete in November offer to lend a hand with olive picking and you’ll be most welcomed.

The orange groves are beginning to look good as the green oranges turn to orange.

Pomegranates too are also at their best in Crete in November and can be picked from the trees if you find a tree growing wild.

There can be some very pleasant days in November on Crete with warm sunshine and clear blue sky days, making it ideal for walking, hiking or bicycling.

La Grèce en novembre : météo, destinations et jours fériés

Vous envisagez de venir en Grèce en novembre ? Bonne idée car la Grèce n’est pas uniquement une destination estivale . C’est le moment de découvrir une autre facette du pays , plus authentique et loin des foules touristiques.

L’Automne en Grèce est une belle saison : la nature se pare de jolies couleurs, les touristes sont très peu nombreux et les prix sont nettement plus bas qu’en été (notamment en ce qui concerne les billets d’avion et les hôtels ).

Quel temps fait-il ? Météo et climat en Grèce en novembre

Athènes est une destination parfaite en novembre ! Quel que soit le temps, la capitale regorge toujours d’activités culturelles et/ou en intérieur. C’est le bon moment pour combiner les musées et les sites archéologiques, sans oublier de profiter des petites tavernes sympas et des cafés pour se réchauffer.

Si jamais vous n’avez pas de chance avec le temps, voici plein d’idées pour visiter Athènes quand il pleut .

=> Notre conseil : optez pour le City Pass d’Athènes qui regroupe l’entrée sur le site de l’Acropole + l’accès à plusieurs musées ainsi qu’au bus à arrêts multiples qui sillonne la ville avec des explications en français. Ou alors juste pour les bus touristiques à arrêts multiples qui permettent de se déplacer facilement dans Athènes et d’avoir un rapide aperçu de tous les sites et musées à visiter.

Bon à savoir : Du 1er Novembre jusqu’au 31 Mars, l’Acropole et les autres sites archéologiques (Agora antique, Temple de Zeus, Keramikos…) ainsi que les musées appartenant à l’État grec (comme le musée archéologique national) appliquent les tarifs réduits pour tous. L’Acropole passe ainsi de 20€ à 10€. De plus, chaque 1er dimanche du mois, l’accès à ces sites et musées grecs est gratuit pour tous. Valable partout en Grèce.

Novembre est également une période agréable pour se balader à Thessalonique . Si le temps est doux et ensoleillé, vous profiterez des balades en bord de mer. Et si jamais il pleut, il y a plein d’activités possibles : musées, sites culturels, shopping, hammam, etc. Les bus à arrêts multiples sont très pratiques pour découvrir la ville.

=> Notre conseil : vraiment, allez voir le site de Vergina (à 1h de Thessalonique), ça vaut le détour . C’est un lieu fascinant et unique en son genre. Si vous n’avez pas envie de louer une voiture, nous avons trouvé cette excursion clé en main au départ de Thessalonique. Nous ne l’avons pas testée mais elle nous semble complète, intéressante et à un prix raisonnable (en anglais).

S’il fait beau, n’hésitez pas et partez passer une journée (ou plus) dans les îles proches d’Athènes : Hydra , Egine , Poros .

Envie de découvrir la Grèce en novembre ? Nous vous conseillons le Pélion, une jolie région peu connue mais avec des paysages magnifiques qui, en novembre, se parent de couleurs chaudes. La région est propice à la randonnée et à la visite de petits villages de montagne typiques. Le soir, vous serez confortablement logés dans des maisons rustiques en pierres, avec feu de cheminée et repas réconfortant.

Envie d’aller dans les îles grecques ? Novembre n’est pas la meilleure saison pour cela. Néanmoins, nous vous recommandons les îles de Rhodes et de Symi où les températures sont plus douces qu’ailleurs et les journées généralement plus ensoleillées que sur le continent. En plus, Rhodes a l’avantage d’être une île avec des activités culturelles.

Le lac Plastira en Grèce est entouré d’une pléthore de beautés naturelles . Même si le lac est artificiel, il n’en est pas moins impressionnant. Chênes et châtaigniers bordent les rives du lac . Et ce magnifique lac offre des possibilités de sports nautiques tels que le rafting et le canoë, ainsi que l’équitation et la randonnée le long des sentiers. Plusieurs activités-nature à faire dans la région. Vraiment, c’est une chouette destination pour novembre !

L’automne en Grèce est une bonne saison pour visiter les visites antiques . D’abord parce qu’il ne fait pas trop chaud . Il faut savoir qu’il y a généralement peu d’ombre dans les sites archéologiques ce qui peut, certains jours, gâcher la visite en été lorsque le soleil est brûlant. Ensuite parce qu’il n’y a pas de monde . Avoir Olympie pour soi, c’est un rêve ! Enfin parce que les couleurs et lumières sont très belles . Donc n’hésitez pas, foncez ! Nous vous conseillons notamment de faire un tour du Péloponnèse et de visiter Epidaure , Mycènes et Olympie .

La Crète est une île qui peut se visiter en toute saison . L’automne est particulièrement agréable pour découvrir le sud de l’île. Vous trouverez des idées d’itinéraires et circuits dans notre rubrique La Crète . Les températures seront un ou deux degrés plus chaudes que sur le continent , avec des journées plus ensoleillées. C’est donc le bon moment pour explorer cette île en mettant l’accent sur la culture et les randonnées (les plages seront trop froides pour bronzer).

Impressionnée par ce site en été, je rêve d’y retourner en Automne. L’Epire et plus particulièrement la région des Zagories , ce sont des paysages magnifiques avec canyons, rivières et les fameuses gorges de Vikos, de charmants villages typiques avec une architecture traditionnelle, des ponts en arches fait de pierre et de nombreuses activités pour profiter de cette somptueuse nature. Elle est d’ailleurs désormais inscrite sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO ! Dépêchez-vous de la visiter…

Les Météores  sont spectaculaires en toute saison ! Et en novembre, les couleurs automnales ajoutent du charme. Selon les années, les montagnes au loin sont déjà saupoudrées des premières neiges de l’hiver. Depuis Athènes, je vous suggère de faire un détour par Delphes , son site archéologique est un incontournable en Grèce et il est tellement plus agréable à visiter sous les douces températures automnales.

=> Notre conseil : depuis Athènes, il existe des excursions d’une journée aux météores en train (en français également). Ainsi que des duos Delphes et les Météores sur deux jours , en anglais et à prix abordable.

• Le marathon d’Athènes : Le marathon d’Athènes est une course mythique de 42,195 kilomètres qui se déroule tous les ans au mois de novembre. Il s’agit de l’une des compétitions sportives les plus importantes au monde.
• Saint-Michel et Saint-Gabriel (Fête de la Synaxe des Archanges) : célébrée chaque 8 novembre, cette tradition grecque orthodoxe comprend des défilés et des célébrations dans les églises portant le nom de l’un des archanges. C’est une journée assez spéciale sur l’île de Symi car de nombreuses églises sont dédiées à l’archange Michel, qui se trouve être le saint patron de l’île.
• Le 17 novembre : c’est un jour partiellement férié-chômé. On célèbre ce jour là l’anniversaire du 17 novembre 1973 où des révoltes ont eu lieu à l’École Polytechnique d’Athènes. C’est un symbole de la résistance à la dictature des colonels. Les écoles et universités sont fermées. Mais les magasins restent ouverts.
• Le festival de musique de Thessalonique a lieu chaque année en novembre
• Fête du Nom de Saint-André . Chaque 25 novembre, les citoyens de Patras célèbrent leur saint patron avec des festivités et un défilé.
• La présentation de Marie est célébrée le 21 novembre . Toute église ou monastère dédié à Marie aura des événements spéciaux ce jour-là.

One week in Crete: Epic 6-7-8 Day Itinerary (First Time Visit)

Itinerary: one week in crete – what to do + where to stay.

You want to go for a 1 week trip to Crete and you’re looking for the best Itinerary?

You’re at the right place!

In order to help you plan your stay , I have prepared this recommended Itinerary for a week in Crete . You will discover some of the best places to visit on the west part of the island!

During this tour you will visit Chania and its surroundings, the Balos Beach , the pink beach of Elafonissi , Rethymnon , and the Samaria gorge for a superb hike.

Quick note: If you prefer to visit East Crete ( Heraklion , Knossos, Spinalonga island, the Lassithi plateau, Vai beach, Matala) , you should rather read my other itinerary: How to visit Western Crete in 1 week.

For this itinerary, in addition to the best things to do and must-see attractions , I will also give you all my best tips as well as a list of the best accommodations depending on your budget.

So, what are the things to do in Crete in one week?  Where to stay?

Where to stay in Chania?

For this one week trip to Crete, you must start by arriving at Chania . It’s simply the most practical way to visit the West of Crete since the city has a well-connected airport.

You can compare flight prices at the end of this article in the section “Going to Crete”.

During this stay you have 2 transportation options:

• Rent a car.
• Opt for organised trips with transport included. There are some such trips available for almost any visit that I propose, if you don’t like driving they are an excellent solution. I’ll give you the links further on in the article.

For renting a car Crete, I recommend using Rentalcars.com . I’ve been using their services for years and I’ve already rented cars in Greece , Corsica , Sardinia and even Thailand .

It is super convenient since you can compare prices directly with all the rental agencies in Chania and you also have access to reviews from former customers.

They also offer (optional) their own “comprehensive insurance” , which provides total coverage in case of damage or accidents (cheaper than the one the rental agency will try to sell you).

On the first day of your holiday in Crete, you can take a small walk in the old town of Chania to discover the main places of interest.

Start by visiting the covered market of Chania where you will have a first glimpse of local products: olive oil, wine, cheese, spices, raki (the local alcohol that will be offered as liqueur after each meal).

Then go to the Greek Orthodox Cathedral and continue your walk in the alleys of the old town where you will find plenty of souvenir shops before reaching the Old Venetian Port. Bordered by restaurants and houses with colourful façades, the place is really pretty.

At the end of the harbour, you’ll find the Firkas fortress, where you can enter the courtyard for free. The strongholds offer a beautiful view of the Old Port and its emblematic monument: the lighthouse of Chania.

The fortress is also home to the maritime museum which exhibits models of boats and navigational instruments. If this is something you like, the entrance fee is €3.

Then cross the Old Port to reach the other side. You will then arrive at the Kioutsouk Hasan mosque (recognisable by its pink dome), the large Venetian arsenal and the old boat hangars. 

You can continue to the lighthouse or go to the old town to see the church of San Rocco, the church of Agios Nikolaos and the minaret.

You will be near the covered market.

For the rest of the day , I recommend relaxing on one of the beaches near Chania (go by bus if you don’t have a car). I particularly recommend the beach of Eastern Gulf or Agii Apostoli/Iguana Beach located just next door.

These are 2 small sandy beaches bordered by pine forests and, where you will find a great way to conclude this first day of your 1 week stay in Crete! Closer to the centre, there’s Nea Chora beach, but it is less pretty.

Spend the night in Chania.

If you have a car, you must park in the large paid car park near the covered market and the stadium.

• Kedrissos Hotel: Located 2 km from the historical centre of Chania. Comfortable and warm double room with balcony from 70€, breakfast included. Strong points: swimming pool, cleanliness, friendly staff, excellent breakfast
• Irida Hotel: Located 20 minutes on foot from the historical centre. Double room with balcony and sea view from 80€, breakfast included. Strong points: friendly staff, close to the beach, ideal location to explore Chania on foot.
• Royal Sun : Located between Chania and the Akrotiri peninsula. Modern and comfortable double room with balcony/terrace and sea/pool or garden view from 90€, breakfast included. Strong points: quiet, beautiful pool area with views over Chania, private parking, variety of breakfast options, shuttle to the city centre. It’s my favorite for its setting and excellent value for money! 
• Kydon The Heart City Hotel: Located close to the covered market. Spacious rooms with balcony and comfortable bedding from 130€, breakfast at 15€. Strong points: the location, the excellent breakfast, the warm welcome and the parking. This is my recommendation for an upscale stay in Chania!
• Chania Flair Deluxe Boutique Hotel: Located 10 minutes from the Old Venetian Port, this 5* hotel offers sumptuous rooms from 250€ per night, breakfast included. Strong points: Spa and wellness area, excellent location, exceptional breakfast, valet service, private beach. This is my recommendation for a luxury stay in Chania!

For the second day of your week-long road trip in Crete , you must suggest go and see one of the most famous beaches on the island: Balos lagoon.

On the agenda: a relaxing day to enjoy the turquoise waters and fine sands in a heavenly setting!

Balos Beach is located about an hour and a half’ s drive from Chania but you have several options to get there:

1) A day-trip by boat

The boat leaves from Kissamos , a small seaside town, 38 km from Chania . You can reach the port by car (free parking on site), by public bus (departure from the bus station) or with an organised trip from Chania.

To get to the lagoon of Balos by boat , you can choose:

• The standard cruise that has 2 stops: a first stop of 2 hours on the island of Gramvoussa to swim or climb up to the fortress, and a second stop at the lagoon of Balos for the remainder of the day .

You must book this boat trip in advance by clicking on the green button below:

• Cruise to Balos lagoon with return transport from Chania included : if you don’t have a car, this is the best option since the bus will pick you up from your hotel and will take you to Kissamos, where you will take the boat to Balos.

2) Drive to Balos

It’s a little less easy than it looks at first glance because there are several things you should know:

• The last part of the road leading to Balos is in fact an 8 km track riddled with numerous potholes and large stones. You will have to drive quite slowly (especially since the rental agencies theoretically prohibit taking this road and the damage will not be covered by insurance).
• The car park at Balos fills-up quickly. You will then have to park wherever you can on the road-side (and sometimes several hundred metres away from the car park).
• Balos can be accessed on foot from the car park. The distance is 1.2 km and 150 metres of a descent to the beach. When you have to go up at the end of the day, it’s a little harder.

But the view along the trail is so beautiful that you can take the chance to click beautiful pictures!

I can assure you, Balos Beach is THE place to see when in Crete for a week!

If you have a car after Balos beach in the afternoon, I also recommend 2 other places to see before returning to Chania:

• Falassarna Beach, a 40-minute drive from Balos. This long beach with translucent waters is very pretty, and has pink sands on the water’s edge. You will also find several beach clubs, excellent for a drink.
• The Botanical Garden of Crete to discover the plants and fruits of Greece. It takes about an hour and a half to walk along the 2.5 km path. (If you don’t have time to visit it, you can also do it on the fourth day.)

Go back to Chania for another night of your week-long trip to Crete.

By car, try to reach Balos before 11:00am to get parking space. Also bring a little change to pay the entrance fee (€1 per person) or if you want to use the toilet (€50cts).

The next day, you must continue your one-week itinerary in Crete in a more active manner.

Go to the Samaria Gorge where you can experience the most famous hike on the island: 16 km on foot , with the first part in the forest and the second part at the very bottom of the Gorge , at the foot of the towering 1,000 ft high cliffs.

If there is one hike you must do when in Crete for one week, this is it!

It is a superb track through the most beautiful natural landscapes of the island that await you but a bit hard because the path is made up of large stones and the slope (downhill) for the first 4 km puts a lot of stress on the knees and ankles.

I strongly advise you to bring a pair of hiking shoes to be as comfortable as possible. You should expect a total of 5 to 7 hours of walking.

From Chania , it takes 1 hour to drive to the start of the trail, at the place called Xyloskalo.

You can go there by car or choose a round-trip in a bus. In this case, the bus will pick you up from your hotel and take you to Xyloskalo .

There is also a guide but he always stays with the slowest people, so you can go hiking at your own pace.

This solution is really very practical if you don’t want to bother with organisational issues.

The Samaria Gorge hike ends at Agia Roumeli , a seaside village only accessible by foot or boat.

As the trail does not circle back and you won’t have time to go all the way in the opposite direction (unless you are a regular at ultra trail), you should take a boat that will take you to Sougia.

Note that there are only 2 boats a day , one at 5 pm and the other at 5.30 pm. If you miss it, you must spend the night in Agia Roumeli*.

Boat tickets (about €11 for a 45 minute trip) can be purchased online in advance (click here) , at the tavern located in the Xyloskalo car park or at Agia Roumeli.

Sit on the right side of the boat if you want to enjoy the scenery during the return trip.

Once in Sougia , the journey does not end there as you will then have to catch a bus that will take you back to the car park (1 hour drive). Buses always wait for the boat to arrive before leaving.

Remember to book your bus ticket on the official KTEL website (click here) , 1 or 2 days in advance to be sure to have a seat.

Collect your car back and spend the night in Chania.

*In case you took longer than expected for the hike and the boat left without you, you can book a room in a small hotel. Here are my recommendations (click on the links below):

• Paralia Guest House
• Agia Roumeli Hotel
• Sweet Corner Masxali

Parking costs €5 and €5 per person for the entrance to the Samaria National Park.

At km 14 , near the exit of the Gorge, you can take the shuttle (€2/pers.) that goes to Agia Roumeli for the last 2 km (if you are tired or you are afraid of being late for the boat).

The Gorge are only open from May to Mid October and can be closed on certain days due to rain, thunderstorms or the risk of fire. Visit the official Samaria website (click here)   before leaving.

You just can’t visit Crete by car for a week without going to the Elafonissi beach!

This beach is on the agenda for today, because after walking for hours on the previous day, you deserve a relaxing day on one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete.

To reach Elafonissi from Chania , it takes about an hour and a half. 

For those who have rented a car , there is a huge free car park just next to the beach. Unlike the lagoon of Balos, Elafonissi beach is directly accessible.

If you don’t have a car, the only other way to get to this must-see spot on a week-long tour of West Crete is by taking the bus. 

You should opt for an organised trip as the the bus will pick you up from your hotel (and will take you back at the end of the day).

Like the lagoon of Balos, the beach is known for its translucent and shallow waters and especially for its pink sands.  This particular colour comes from the decomposition of the shells of certain pink molluscs , which mixes with the sand.

Elafonissi beach is divided into 2 parts.

On one side you have the main beach located directly next to the parking lot where you can rent deckchairs/parasols for only € 7 for 2 people. There are 2 snack-stalls and a toilet (paid).

On the other side, there’s Elafonisi island located just opposite, which you can reach on foot by crossing on the sandbar or in the water. Here, the landscape has remained wilder because the island is a protected natural zone.

There are far fewer people and you will find plenty of coves with turquoise waters and pink sands. The perfect place to enjoy your day and swim peacefully.

You can also take a short walk to the end of the island where you’ll find a small chapel.

On the road before arriving at Elafonisi, you must stop and visit the Agia Sofia cave . It will only take you about 10 minutes, but the entrance is free. Here you can admire some stalactites and stalagmites and enjoy the view of the Topolia Gorge.

However, I don’t recommend visiting the Chrysoskalitissas monastery (located just next door), which is in all the travel guides on Crete. Even though the entrance fee is only €2, there is simply nothing to see.

After Elafonissi, you can also go to the beautiful beach of Kedrodasos (5 minutes by car + 10 minutes walk). Lined with junipers and completely untamed, you won’t be able to resist taking a swim in the turquoise waters.

Today, for the next leg of your 1 week road trip in Crete, you should stay close to Chania and explore the peninsula of Akrotiri.

It is located just outside the city and has some of the places to see during your week in West Crete.

To make sure you don’t miss anything, you must visit these spots in the following order after arriving from Chania:

1) Stavros beach:  a sandy beach located in a small bay sheltered from the wind. It is very well known in Crete as it was a shooting location for the film “Zorba the Greek”, released in 1964 and starring Anthony Quinn.

2) Agia Triada monastery, 15 minutes by car from Stavros.

It is one of the most visited monasteries on the island. Dating back to the 17th century , I found the site really well maintained.

Here you can explore its church, the wine cellar, the flowery and well-maintained gardens, a small museum and a shop where you can buy wine, raki and olive oil produced by the monks. There are tasting sessions too.

Entrance to the monastery costs €2.50 / Free parking / Ladies, legs and shoulders must be covered. You can rent a pareo/shawl at the entrance.

3) The Governto Monastery , 10 minutes away from Agia Triada.

Less well-known than its neighbour, it has a pretty inner courtyard and a small church. Please note that photography is prohibited.

The monastery is closed on Wednesdays and Fridays. The other days of the week, it is open from 9:00am to 12:00pm and from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.

As you leave the monastery , on your right side and at the back of the alley, you will find a small gate leading to a path leading down to the seaside . The path goes through a cave , passes through the ruins of the Katholiko monastery and leads to a small, pretty cove with turquoise waters.

It takes about an hour and a half to go there and back, but the difference in altitude is quite large and there is no shade on the way. Bring enough water and wear good shoes.

4) Seitan Limani beach is one of the best beaches to go when in Crete for a week.

The beach is located below a small canyon where the water has managed to carve a path over time. It’s very photogenic, and you can swim in the turquoise waters (often agitated because it is quite windy) surrounded by high rock walls.

The path leading down to the beach in 15 minutes is a bit dangerous as it is quite steep and very narrow.

It is better to have a pair of sneakers and be sure that you aren’t afraid of heights, but if you don’t feel like going down, you can always admire the view from the car park.

5) Marathi beach which actually has 2 sandy coves.

Most of the beach is private, with deckchairs and parasols available for hire and all the car parks around it are charged. Very easy to access and with its shallow waters, it’s a popular family spot.

If you go on this recommended week-long itinerary in Crete with your children, it is a good place to swim.

6) The Loutraki beach, which forms a small cove with sands and turquoise waters. It’s really nice but there’s a tourist complex right nearby, which is very crowded.

Spend another night in Chania.

The plan for this day is much less practical if you don’t have a car:

• In summer, public buses run from Chania to Stavros, Seitan Limani, Marathi and Loutraki. But these are different bus lines that do not circle around the peninsula and you will have to go back to Chania every time.
• For the Agia Triada monastery, you will have to take a bus to the airport and finish the last 3 km on foot or by taxi.

If you wish to replace the visit to Akrotiri with another activity, you will find ideas for day 7 of this itinerary.

It would be a shame to go to Crete for a week without going to Rethymnon, so that’s where you must go on this last day.

Rethymnon is a 1-hour drive east of Chania and there is also a bus line linking the 2 cities.

To make sure you don’t miss out on the must -see sights, here is the itinerary you must take take to visit the old town and its pretty historic centre.

Start by visiting 16th century Venetian fortress. For €4, you can take a walk up the ramparts to admire the view of the city.

If you are an art lover, you can then visit the museum of contemporary art. Entrance costs €3.

Continue the walk through the Old Venetian port and enter the heart of the old town to see:

• The Rimondi fountain
• The Nerantzes Mosque
• The workshop of the the last filo pastry maker in Crete located on the Rue Vernardoy
• Rethymnon Archaeological Museum
• Other religious buildings: the Four Martyrs Church, the Veli Pasha mosque and the Kara Mussa mosque.

For those who are driving on this week-long trip to the west of Crete, after Rethymnon , you can go and visit the Arkadi monastery, 20 km away.

Along with the Agia Triada monastery, it is one of the best known monasteries on the island.

A quick history: under the Ottoman occupation of the island, hundreds of inhabitants fled to the monastery but it was besieged by more than 2,000 soldiers . The inhabitants chose to to burn the barrels of powder stored in the wine cellar rather than surrender.

Every one of them were killed, the people an their enemies. This act of resistance marked the beginning of the Cretan struggle against invaders.

During the visit, you can discover the famous wine cellar, the museum containing relics and the 16th century Venetian church.

Then drive back to Chania . Halfway, about 30 minutes from Rethymnon , you must take a stop at Kournas lake.

This is the perfect spot if you fancy a swim in fresh water, because it is the only natural lake in Crete. 

You must also rent a kayak or a paddle boat for 1 hour and go around the lake: you might catch a glimpse of the many sea turtles that live there.

Spend the night in Chania.

Chania airport is located on Akrotiri peninsula, 14 km from the city centre.

La vie simple en famille: vadrouilles et fait-maison

La crète en novembre: infos pratiques.

Début novembre, nous sommes partis en Crète une semaine. Nous avions prévu ça après l’été, en se disant qu’un supplément d’été nous ferait le plus grand bien. Comme vous le savez sans doute, nous essayons de prendre l’avion le moins possible, ce voyage a donc fait figure d’exception. Dans cet article, je vais répondre à toutes les questions pratiques que vous m’avez posé sur Instagram. Je reviendrais plus tard avec notre itinéraire et toutes nos visites.

On commence par le nerf de la guerre: le coût du voyage. L’avion a été le plus cher, on a hésité trop longtemps avant de prendre nos billets, regardant ainsi les pris s’envoler. Pour nous 5, nous en avons eu pour 860€

Nous avons ensuite réservé deux logements, 450 + 260= 710

Enfin, nous avons loué une voiture, 240€ dont la moitié était en réalité l’assurance. En effet, nous avons été obligé de prendre l’assurance max n’ayant pas de carte de crédit (mais juste de débit) pour la caution. Cela dit, nous vous conseillons de prendre une bonne assurance car la conduite en Crète est très particulière.

Soit 1810€ pour une semaine à cinq.

Sur place, nous avons fait deux restos et deux fois des courses, mais cela ne nous a pas couté plus cher qu’à la maison (probablement moins même).

Au départ de Lyon, il y a 3 heures de vol. A l’aller c’était entre midi et deux, nous avons donc tué le temps avec un pique-nique, au retour c’était l’heure de la sieste, et Loni s’est endormi sur son papa. Nous avons atterri à Heraklion.

Premières impressions

Je ne vais pas vous mentir, je n’ai pas été de suite sous le charme de l’île. A notre arrivée le ciel était tout gris, les alentours de Héraklion ne sont pas très avenants, très urbanisé, beaucoup de zones industriels, de bâtiments à l’abandon. Il y avait aussi au détour des chemins, des décharges sauvages…. Clairement rien pour plaire. Ce n’est surement pas pire que dans d’autres grandes villes insulaires, mais cette première impression a été assez tenace. Ce qui n’a pas aidé non plus à savourer ce début de voyage est qu’il y avait beaucoup trop de choses à voir, vous savez les fameux incontournables, et que j’ai passé les premières 24h à calculer comment en voir le plus possible, comment rentabiliser au mieux notre temps sur place. J’ai perdu beaucoup de temps et en plus, je n’ai pas trouvé de solution miracle.

Il a fallu lâcher prise, me souvenir que l’essentiel d’un voyage n’est jamais de coché toutes les zones touristiques. J’ai ensuite profiter de mon temps sur place en mode tourisme doux et c’est définitivement ce qui nous convient le mieux.

A la base, naïvement, nous pensions ne louer que un logement. Mais compte tenu de la taille de l’île et des temps de trajets, on s’est vite dit que ce serait plus chouette de couper la semaine en deux. La première partie à l’Ouest, la seconde à l’Est. Je ne sais pas si c’est les prix de l’île ou la saison, mais les tarifs des gîtes ont été une bonne surprise. Nous pouvons rarement (jamais) nous offrir un logement avec piscine par exemple.

Pour le premier, c’était une maison avec 3 chambres, dans un petit ensemble de 4 logements. La situation géographique à 5 minutes de la mer et 20 minutes de la Canée était très chouette. Par contre, les maisons n’étaient pas très bien exposées pour la saison, nous avions peu de temps d’ensoleillement. Je me doute que c’est plutôt un avantage en période estivale. Les enfants ont surtout apprécié les nombreux chats.

Pour le second logement, nous nous sommes perdus dans les montagnes à l’Est de l’île. Une maison à l’esprit cycladique extrêmement mignonne et agréable à vivre. La mer était à une dizaine de minutes de voiture. Contrairement au premier logement, nous étions exposé plein Sud, ce qui est très appréciable en novembre! Cette maison a été une très belle surprise, tout était beaucoup plus joli que sur les photos. Nos réveils dans cette maison ont été magiques, avec le petit dej au soleil, la trempette dans la piscine… C’est une adresse que je vous recommande les yeux fermés.

La météo nous a vraiment gâté, hormis les premières 24h toutes grises, le reste de la semaine a été extrêmement ensoleillé et doux. A l’Est nous avons même eu franchement chaud. Nous nous sommes baignés tous les jours, et l’eau était très agréable (même pour les adultes). Nous avions pris les combi néoprène aux enfants, elles sont finalement restées dans la valise toute la semaine.

Le régime crétois est bien connu, nous nous attendions à beaucoup de légumes et produits frais, il y a en effet des primeurs et marchés de partout. Les restos que nous avons fait étaient excellents, les biscuits de pâtisseries délicieux. Il y a des jus de fruits frais de partout, et les crétois raffolent du café glacé (que nous n’avons pas gouté). Aucune fausses notes de ce côté. Nous nous aussi régalés des bons petits plats de Jérôme à la maison. A l’Est la plupart des restos était par contre fermés pour cette première semaine de novembre.

La Crète est vraiment extrêmement riche à visiter, il y a les plages, mais aussi énormément de montagnes avec le plus haut sommet à 2450m. Il y a plein de gorges et de possibilités de rando, beaucoup de grottes aussi. Nous avons regretté de ne pas avoir prévu les chaussures de rando car les possibilités sont infinies.

Il y a aussi beaucoup de monastères, quasiment tous ouvert au public. Les villes sont également très jolies. Nous avons beaucoup apprécié les ports vénitiens de Réthymnon et surtout la Canée.

Il y a vraiment beaucoup de choses à voir et à vivre, largement de quoi occuper deux semaines (et même plus).

Durée du jour

C’est le gros bémol d’un voyage en novembre. Le soleil se couchait à 17h20, ce qui fait vraiment des petites journées. Nous avons donc décalé nos journées en vous couchant tôt et nous levant tôt. Après c’est aussi un autre rythme que l’été qui peut se savourer différemment. Le soir, nous avons pris le temps de cuisiner, de nous reposer, de profiter et c’était aussi agréable.

Malgré une rencontre décevante entre la Crète et moi, l’île a tout donné pour me séduire et elle y est arrivée! J’ai une préférence pour notre seconde partie à l’Est, non pas que c’était plus joli, mais juste parce que c’était plus sauvage et que j’avais vraiment lâché toutes les injonctions d’un voyage réussi pour juste kiffer.
