The Ultimate 1 or 3-Day Voyageurs National Park Itinerary

As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. We may receive a commission for purchases made through these links. This site also contains affiliate links to products besides Amazon and we may also receive a commission for purchases.

Voyageurs National Park is a remote and stunning wilderness in northern Minnesota. The park offers a variety of activities, from boating to hiking, with a wide range of top sights to see along the way. Voyageurs is home to four large lakes and many smaller ones scattered throughout the park. Top sights include the Ellsworth Rock Gardens and Kettle Falls Hotel; and the visitor’s centers are also popular spots to pay a visit. If you’re not sure what to do or where to go next during your visit to Voyageurs National Park, keep reading for the ultimate itinerary !

We’ve included 2 different lengths for these Voyageurs National Park itineraries. One will get you just a quick overview and a couple of great stops in a one-day pit stop. The other is a 3-day itinerary for visiting Voyageurs National Park, which will give you a little more variety.

Don’t just limit yourself to a few days, though! Especially if you love the outdoors, then you could likely spend much more time out here enjoying all of the natural beauty!

When is the best time to visit Voyageurs?

The best time of year to visit Voyageurs is dependent on what you want to do while there – if you’re looking for some more solitude, late fall or early winter might be your best bet. Just beware, temperatures drop quickly!

If you prefer warmer weather, head out during the summer months. The summer months are busier, though, with family vacations and those enjoying the many campsites scattered throughout the park. Some of the campsites are able to accommodate large houseboats, making this a popular summer family vacation destination. More on that later!

April and May are typically busier with fishing seasons, especially after the ice has melted from the lakes.

Fall brings beautiful foliage for a short time, but temperatures quickly turn from cold to frigid.

Ice fishing and winter recreation opportunities exist, though, for those looking to get out and explore Voyageurs during the coldest months.

The itineraries included here are probably best suited for the shoulder seasons, in May before Memorial Day and September after Labor Day, when things aren’t quite as busy in the park.

How to get to Voyageurs National Park

Voyageurs is located on the state of Minnesota’s border with Canada, so it might be easier to fly into International Falls. There are daily flights from the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport to International Falls.

Alternatively, a drive from the twin cities will require between 4-5 hours, depending on the area of the park you are heading to.

The city of Duluth is a little closer, with 2.5-3 hours of driving separating the two locations.

Fly into one of these two more easily accessible airports, then drive through the beautiful northern Minnesota countryside.

Getting Around the Park

We loved using this National Geographic map to find a great campsite and plan the stops that we wanted to see. Hiking trails are included on the map, too. It really helped us to get a lay of the land. There is also a separate paddling route map, and they’re both waterproof !

You’ll need a car to get around the mainland areas of the national park.

After you arrive at Voyageurs, you’ll most likely need to switch your mode of transportation.

Boats are the best way to get around and see much more of Voyageurs. With 1/3 of the park covered in the water of the lakes and waterways, you’ll surely miss so much by not getting out to explore them.

You’ll need some boat access to complete this Voyagers National Park itinerary.

If you don’t own a boat but want to use one to explore Voyageurs, there are several rental options. Find a full list of links and contact information here for all the marinas, rentals, and guide services for those looking to take advantage of the waterways.

If you’re nervous about navigating those waterways on your own, there are plenty of options for guided tours and taxis. They’re included on the list in the link above, organized by the lake that they service.

Some even offer houseboat rentals and other water activities like fishing or kayaking.

Is Voyageurs National Park worth visiting?

Absolutely ! Voyageurs offers so many things to do and see. You shouldn’t get bored here!

Many visitors are lured in by the fishing opportunities that Voyageurs National Park provides. Fish populations include walleye, northern pike, perch, whitefish, panfish (bluegill), largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, trout, and muskie. Fishing is fantastic in Voyageurs during the summer months, but winter ice fishing also exists on some of Voyageurs’ frozen lakes.

Voyageurs National Park offers some excellent opportunities for hiking, too. There are over 100 miles of trails to explore while you’re there! Hikers enjoy views of wildlife like loons, eagles, osprey, and more. There are also opportunities to view rich history at places like the Kettle Falls Hotel and Little American Island.

If you’re looking for a more relaxing adventure, just choose a campsite, boat out, and settle in for a few days of isolated relaxation. There are both options that have a dock for a boat and options that, after boating to a trailhead, require a hike, and in some cases, a canoe paddle, to reach a campsite.

Voyageurs is a wonderful place to visit for any type of traveler , offering something exciting and interesting for everyone!

Voyageurs National Park Lodging

Camping or Cabins? Hotels or Bed & Breakfasts? What’s your style?

Voyageurs offers many campsites scattered throughout the national park that can accommodate houseboats, and regular-sized boats, or can be reached via a backcountry hike to the sites.

These sites require a decent amount of effort to reach them, but it’s very much worth the effort!

There are plenty of cabins, located along the Voyageurs National Park mainland surrounding the lakes, that require a drive to access. There are also some cabins out on some of the islands that require a boat to reach!

Check out this Cozy Cabin on Stop Island!

They range from rustic camping cabins to beautiful modern log homes complete with indoor plumbing and heating systems. Many even have a view of the lake they are situated on!

Bed & Breakfasts

Though to our knowledge, there aren’t any bed & breakfasts actually in the park, many of the lodges and “resorts” offer a bed & breakfast feel. Many of these options, too, can be found by word of mouth.

Voyageurs has one hotel in, owned, and operated by the park, called the Kettle Falls Hotel .

It’s rustic, with shared bathrooms and very basic furnishings. A boat ride is required to reach the Kettle Falls Hotel, and it can be arranged through the hotel when you book your stay.

For options to include more modern lodging, you’ll most likely have to head over to the city of International Falls . Located adjacent to the far western edge of the park, this is the most modern area near the park.

Check out the Cantilever Hotel in International Falls. It is quite unique, and it has a lot of history during the Prohibition Era. There is now a distillery onsite and a cocktail room to highlight local spirits!

One-Day Voyageurs National Park Itinerary

This itinerary includes some of Voyageurs National Park’s most popular attractions and a sample “path” to follow. This will be a full day, so buckle up!

The most popular lake to visit is Kabetogama, as most of the main attractions are along the shores of this lake. This is where you will get the most bang for your buck!

Some tours also begin from the Rainy Lake Visitor’s Center, but for this one-day itinerary, we’ll plan to stay on Kabetogama. This Voyageurs National Park itinerary is also meant for summer when boats are able to navigate the lakes without ice!

Begin the morning with a tour by boat.

Getting out on the water is the best way to get the most out of your experience in Voyageurs National Park. Voyageurs has many options for guided tours as well as boat rentals, so you can choose a larger group tour or something very private and tailored to your needs.

Tours by the national park head to either the Ellsworth Rock Gardens or to Kettle Falls Hotel. We’d recommend heading to Ellsworth Rock Gardens. The shorter of the two tour options get more bang for your buck. You’ll be able to explore the gardens and all of the rock sculptures for over 90 minutes. The Kettle Falls tour is expected to be 5.5 hours long, taking up a large part of your one day.

Book either of these tours on recreation.gov .

voyager my trip

Take the Scenic Drive to the Ash River Visitor’s Center.

From the Kabetogama Visitor’s Center, head towards County Road 129. This road, also known as the Ash River Trail, winds through the forested and marshy areas in and near the park.

Be sure to keep an eye out on this drive. There is a good chance that you will come across wildlife including deer grazing in the green patches along the roadway.

If you visit Voyageurs National Park in the summer, take advantage of this scenic drive to cool down. It’s a great way to see more of Voyageurs and get away from the hustle and bustle that is common at Kabetogama Lake!

Pack a Picnic Lunch and Explore the Center.

This Voyageurs National Park one-day itinerary includes lunch, so make sure to pack a picnic! The visitor’s center has some tables and benches for you to enjoy. Grab a spot with a view, or pick a shady spot under the beautiful tree cover.

Either before or after lunch, don’t overlook a stop-in to check out the visitor’s center. The building itself is a historic lodge housing things like informational exhibits and a small theatre. This is a great place to learn more about Voyageurs and get more info for the rest of your trip, so be sure to check it out!

Get out and Hike the Trails.

There are two trails that we’d recommend near the Ash River Visitor’s Center . While a little bit of shuffling around is required, we’d recommend hiking to the Beaver Pond Overlook and the Blind Ash Bay trails.

Beaver Pond Overlook

The Beaver Pond Overlook can be found on County Road 129 and will be on the left when heading towards the visitor’s center. If you’re looking to avoid driving around in circles, you could stop and explore this quick hike of fewer than 0.5 miles.

Although the name is a little deceiving, and there are no longer beavers inhabiting this pond, there is a chance you will see birds and other large wildlife, especially if visiting earlier or later in the day.

The Blind Ash Bay Trail can be accessed from the upper parking lot at the visitor’s center, away from the lake. You’ll find the trail near the back right corner of the lot when looking in the opposite direction of the lake. In the beginning, you’ll navigate a few stairs and steep uphill climbs.

There are some mild elevation changes along the trail, which we’d describe as lollipop-shaped. In the beginning, commit this terrain to memory- you’ll have to cross over it again!

voyager my trip

Although this trail is advertised online as a 2.5-mile hike, we found the signage along the trail to tell a different story.

Beginning from the parking lot, you’ll have to hike 1.2 miles before you reach the split for the loop.

Then, you can choose which way to travel the loop. We don’t really have a preference, either way!

If you’re visiting near sunset, though, take some time to appreciate the view from the overlook on the loop section. Facing in a west direction, you may be able to catch a fiery sky!

In total, we found this hike to be more like 3.1+ miles. It may not seem like much extra, but that 0.6 miles can definitely make you late for your shuttle! We found this out the hard way!

Call it a day.

At this point, you’ve sure done quite a bit of exploring. If you have time, stop at the other overlooks on the way out from the visitor’s center. There is one overlooking Kabetogama Lake, also facing west for sunset, and one overlooking more of the lush, green (in summertime) Voyageurs forests!

Otherwise, you’ve earned a good night’s sleep wherever you have chosen to stay!

Three-Day Voyageurs National Park Itinerary

This itinerary includes some of Voyageurs National Park’s most popular attractions and a sample “path” to follow. It also recommends the best time of year to visit Voyageurs for this particular type of trip (camping).

We also recommend, to get the most out of your experience, staying in different locations each of the two nights. This will require extra effort, but in our opinion, is the best way to see the park.

Don’t worry! There will definitely be some time to relax!

One other thing to note: This itinerary is very weather-dependent. Any storms or strong wind drumming up waves on the lakes could make them dangerous to cross, so plans could be totally derailed in inclement weather. We’d recommend having a backup plan, just in case!

First, if you’re heading into the backcountry, you’ll probably have arranged ahead of time to pick up a key at one of the visitor’s centers. This key will give you access to a canoe. This canoe will get you to a campsite. They’re pretty important.

Don’t forget to stop and pick it up!

Begin with a tour & shuttle combined experience on Kabetogama.

There are plenty of tour and shuttle companies authorized to provide their service in the national park, and contact information can be found via a list here .

We were able to secure a private water taxi departing from the Wooden Frog Campground docks, which began as a tour around the lake and to the Ellsworth Rock Gardens.

On our way, we were able to view the plants and wildlife, even bald eagle nests with young still in them! We learned on our tour that there are over 50 nesting pairs of bald eagles in the park. Bald eagles mate for life and return to the same nest each year.

Voyageurs National Park is home to many pairs of bald eagles, nesting in the park.

Arriving at the Rock Gardens, our guide allowed us to explore the grounds at our own pace, made sure we had a map, and pointed us in the right direction. We were able to wander around and view all of the rock sculptures. This is a great way to see the gardens.

After the tour, head towards your trailhead. When you are dropped off, arrange and agree on a time for your taxi guide to pick you up in the morning.

For the first night, you’ll be pitching a tent.

Night one of the Voyageurs National Park itinerary includes tent camping.

Some of the best overnight accommodations in Voyageurs National Park are the backcountry campsites. If you have the opportunity and ability to reach one, DO IT .

If not, choose one of the sites situated right on the main lake. There are quite a few, so take your pick!

If you can get to backcountry sites, both the areas around the Locator Lake Trail and Shoepack Lakes are great areas to look at!

To reach some of these campsites, after hiking a trail, you’ll then find a canoe waiting for you in the middle of the wilderness, which will be the final leg of your trip.

Many of these campsites have a fire ring, grill, bear pole or locker, and a tent pad or area. After setting up camp, you can either relax or bring along some fishing equipment and try to secure some fresh catch to supplement your dinner.

backcountry campsite in Voyageurs National Park that includes a fire ring, bear pole, and tent spot

You may even see some other wildlife, including deer, beavers, turtles, etc. Beavers were very active around the Shoepack Lakes, and we saw multiple on our most recent visit.

Be cautious with food and scented items, though. Black bears do reside in the park and have been known to travel miles for scents and disturb plenty of campers’ food supplies.

After nightfall, look up . On clear nights, the stars are fantastic here. If you’re lucky, you can see clear views of the Milky Way. If you’re really lucky , you might even catch a glimpse of the glowing Northern Lights.

On day 2, you’ll begin by packing up your camp and returning back to the trailhead. Get up a little early and spend some time canoeing around the lake you’ve camped on.

Then, you’ll be returning to the trailhead, where you’re water taxi guide will pick you up and return you to Wooden Frog.

Since it’ll probably be pretty early when you return, there will be time to situate your belongings and head over to the Ash River Visitor’s Center. Enjoy the scenic drive along the Ash River Trail and stop at the Beaver Pond Overlook on the left for a nice view and to stretch your legs over a 0.4-mile walk.

Continue on to the visitor’s center, where you can explore the exhibits and get things together for the next leg of the adventure.

Catch your water taxi to the historic Kettle Falls Hotel

Located in a remote corner of the park on the far east side of the Kabetogama Peninsula, the Kettle Falls Hotel is a destination a little more difficult to reach in this park. 15 miles separate it from the nearest road.

The hotel does have a water taxi that you can book along with hotel accommodations for an extra fee.

Guests are picked up at the dock to the right of the Ash River Visitor’s Center . You’ll be on the boat for about 30 minutes or so, and you’ll pass tons of beautiful Voyageurs scenery.

Now, let me be clear, the Kettle Falls Hotel is not a place where everyone will enjoy the accommodations. It is a historic site, and it is kept as such.

We have run into fishing groups who make a yearly trek to the hotel, as well as first-time visitors. Most come to get away from the hustle and bustle.

voyager my trip

However, this site can become quite busy in peak season. Being one of just a few notable “attractions” in the national park, many people do stop by for a visit.

During the day, you may have a difficult time finding that retreat, but this is not meant to scare you away. Merely, just to prepare you for what to expect here, as it’s unlike many other places we’ve stayed before.

Enjoy your getaway to the Kettle Falls Hotel

When you arrive at the docks, you’ll be greeted by the staff with golf carts who will take you up the long dirt drive to the hotel with your belongings. You’ll be able to check into your room or villa and get settled.

The hotel itself reminded us more of a bed & breakfast style accommodation, with rooms on the smaller side and shared bathrooms.

The villas, a little further down the drive, are nestled in a forested area close to the water. They’re kind of like duplex cabins, and some have full kitchens, small patios with grills, and can accommodate 2-8 people.

After you’ve settled in, spend some time exploring the grounds. There aren’t really designated hiking trails, but you can walk the paths to the docks on each side of the hotel.

The path on the Rainy Lake side, to the left when coming out of the hotel, includes a cool little boardwalk over a marshy area. It’s worth the short walk.

Walk down the dirt drive in front of the hotel where it meets the water, and head up the short path, where you will find the Kettle Falls dam.

There isn’t an actual waterfall here, but there are about 10 feet of difference in water level between the two lakes joining here, so you’ll likely see plenty of rushing water.

rushing water coming from the Kettle Falls Dam

You can also wade in the water at the small “beach.”

Did you know that there are spots in the US where you can look to the south and be looking into Canada? There are!

Other than obviously Alaska, here at Kettle Falls in Voyageurs is another spot! All of the land across the water here (and in the photo above) is Canadian. Enjoy the rare oddity while you’re there, but don’t let it play tricks with your mind!

After exploring the corners of the grounds, you can play a game of volleyball or horseshoes in the yard.

Sit back and relax in one of the cozy chairs on the screened-in front porch with a good book.

Rent a canoe or kayak from the hotel and explore the nearby waters.

Unless you bring your own food for dinner, there is a dining room on-site with a small menu including sandwiches and a few dinners. This is the only food option here.

After dinner, head around the porch to the on-site bar, the Lumberjack Saloon , for a drink and a game of pool. You might be surprised when you walk in the door, but we won’t give away the surprise. You’ll just have to go and see for yourself! On a hot day, the “pinky”, their signature slushy drink, really hits the spot.

The Lumberjack Saloon is open to the public during the day but stays open “late” for overnight guests. There is no set closing time for the bar. It’s all dependent on the visitors.

The small staff that works here at the hotel and helps to provide the amenities also live on-site all season.

In the morning, grab breakfast in the dining room, and prepare for your departure back to the mainland. Staff will return you to the taxi dock on the same golf carts you rode in on.

When you arrive back at the Ash River Visitor’s Center, you may think that you’re done!

Get one Last Hike in.

hiking in Voyageurs National Park is on the itinerary.

Before you leave, though, be sure to hike the Blind Ash Bay Trail for a beautiful view over Kabetogama. Plan for about 2 hours for this hike, just to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the views.

You’ll find the trailhead off of the upper parking lot at the visitor’s center. It’s a great way to stretch your legs after the water taxi ride and before leaving the park and heading on to your next destination, wherever that may be.

Packing for this Voyageurs National Park Itinerary

For the three-day itinerary, you’ll be spending each overnight in two very different ways. We’d recommend packing two separate bags and having them ready to go in your vehicle whenever you depart for the park, so you don’t have any delays when arriving at your shuttles or water taxis.

For the first overnight, pack your hiking pack with all of your normal backcountry gear, including your tent, sleeping pad, meals, and fire-starting tools.

If you’re going to be heading to one of the campsites where you must set out on a canoe, you’ll need to have your own life vest. One of these packable, manually inflatable live vests is a good option.

Pack bug and tick spray and wear clothing that covers your legs. Ticks here on some of the backcountry trails have been some of the worst we’ve seen and experienced.

If you’re into fishing, bring your pole and a few supplies. Fishing is a very popular activity here!

For the second overnight, your regular overnight duffel or small bag will do. The Kettle Falls Hotel accommodations provide sheets, pillows, towels, and basic supplies just like any other hotel.

Throw in a good book, a deck of cards, or whatever you like to do for peaceful entertainment for both nights, and you’re all set!

If We Were Spending More Time in Voyageurs…

Have more time to relax and enjoy this destination?

Renting a houseboat would be a great way to have a little piece of luxury while still enjoying the natural beauty. There are plenty of campsites specifically designated for houseboats throughout the park.

Families often head up north to Voyageurs to spend their weeklong summer vacation on one of these rented houseboats! Unless, of course, you can bring your own!

If you’re looking to see and cover as much ground as possible, after leaving the Ash River Visitor’s Center, you could hop in your car and head up towards the city of International Falls and the Rainy Lake Visitors Center.

There are plenty of spots to explore in the city if you’re looking for a little change of pace. There are also the Black Bay hiking trails just a short one-mile trip across the Black Bay Narrows.

Head out to Little American Island on Rainy Lake just north of the visitor center to learn about the history of gold mining on the island. There are still remnants of machinery and mine shafts used, which can be seen from the 1/4 mile loop walk around the island.

FAQ’s About Voyageurs National Park

Is there a fee to enter Voyageurs National Park?

No! Unlike many other national parks, especially in the west, there is no entry fee. Only ferries, organized tours, and camping require fees. Exploring on your own is free!

What is the weather like at Voyageurs?

Voyageurs National Park is located in the northernmost part of Minnesota, so you can imagine that the weather can get pretty cold.

Winters are very harsh and snowfall frequently occurs throughout the winter months; expect lots of ice on ponds and lakes!

Summers are warmer with temperatures reaching into the 70s (F) regularly – it’s a great time to enjoy the water, especially by boating, kayaking, and fishing.

Is Voyageurs National Park still worth visiting in winter?

Voyageurs is open year-round! However, some services may be closed during certain parts of the year depending on weather conditions or other factors.

Winter activities include snowshoeing and cross-country skiing through untouched woods, ice fishing (though it’s not for everyone), and of course, the beauty that only a blanket of snow can bring to Voyageurs.

Can you see the Northern Lights at Voyageurs?

Sometimes! It is possible to see the aurora borealis (Northern Lights) from Voyageurs. If you want the best chance at seeing them, we recommend heading up north in October-March!

Longer periods of darkness provide more of a chance, though there is a chance that the Northern Lights can be seen any time of year in Voyageurs National Park.

What national parks are nearby Voyageurs?

The closest NPS sites near Voyageurs include the Superior National Forest to the south and Isle Royale National Park over in Lake Superior.

If you’re looking for a new place to explore, Voyageurs National Park may be the next destination for you.

Located in northern Minnesota on the state’s border with Canada, this beautiful, less-visited national park has everything from large lakes and small ponds scattered throughout to historic Kettle Falls Hotel buildings.

Explore by boat or through guide services depending on your preferences – but make sure you don’t miss any of the top sights included on these Voyagers National Park itineraries!

The vast, untouched wilderness of Voyageurs National Park is a place that will challenge you and inspire you. It is the perfect setting for an adventure or just relaxing with friends. There are so many ways to explore this breathtaking park!

Now the only question is… when are you going to visit?

NASA hears from Voyager 1, the most distant spacecraft from Earth, after months of quiet

NASA has finally heard back from Voyager 1 in a way that makes sense

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- NASA has finally heard back from Voyager 1 again in a way that makes sense.

The most distant spacecraft from Earth stopped sending back understandable data last November. Flight controllers traced the blank communication to a bad computer chip and rearranged the spacecraft’s coding to work around the trouble.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California declared success after receiving good engineering updates late last week. The team is still working to restore transmission of the science data.

It takes 22 1/2 hours to send a signal to Voyager 1, more than 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) away in interstellar space. The signal travel time is double that for a round trip.

Contact was never lost, rather it was like making a phone call where you can’t hear the person on the other end, a JPL spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Launched in 1977 to study Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 1 has been exploring interstellar space — the space between star systems — since 2012. Its twin, Voyager 2, is 12.6 billion miles (20 billion kilometers) away and still working fine.

Our Wander-Filled Life

The Perfect Three-Day Voyageurs National Park Itinerary

Last Updated on February 22, 2024 by Grant

In the late 1700s and early 1800s, French-Canadian canoemen, called voyageurs, played a vital role in the fur trade. These voyageurs paddled up to 16 hours a day and portaged hundreds of pounds of goods (along with the canoe) transporting beaver pelts and other items roughly 3,000 miles to Montreal. Our Voyageurs National Park itinerary allows you to learn more about this historic waterway system that, today, is a beautiful and serene outdoor playground.

While the history of this land plays an important role in its preservation, the scenery and solitude it provides are what draws people in. Located in northern Minnesota, right on the Canadian border, this is one of the most remote parks in the contiguous United States. And the unspoiled beauty of the land is something you don’t find often.

Fun fact: much of the US-Canada border follows the path of the voyageurs.

With our three-day itinerary, you’ll have time to visit each of the park’s mainland areas, learn more about the historic voyageurs that the park is named for and get out on the water.

(Disclaimer: When we link to places where you can buy our stuff or places we stayed, we are using special codes that earn us commissions on the sales at no additional cost to you. Please see our  Review Policy   for more information.)

Getting to Voyageurs National Park

Getting to Voyageurs National Park really is not all that difficult, as long as you’re ready for a road trip. Actually exploring the park does take some advanced planning, though. That’s because roughly 40% of the park is water. And getting to much of the land area requires a boat. Don’t worry, though, there are plenty of options if you don’t have your own boat.

The gateway city for Voyageurs National Park is International Falls, MN. With a population of about 5,800, it actually is not quite as big of a city as I expected it to be. Still, it is a decent-sized town with a grocery store, a few restaurants and basic supplies. There are also a lot of lodges and resorts right around the park.

You can drive directly to International Falls. While there is an airport there, it is very small. It’s probably best to drive in from Duluth (about 3 hours) or Minneapolis-St. Paul (about 5 hours), if you are too far to drive from home.

We drove up to International Falls from Yankton, SD, where we were visiting the Missouri National Recreational River , overnighting at Maplewood State Park along the way. I have to say, the entire drive through Minnesota was gorgeous and very relaxing.

Read our in-depth campground reviews here.

The park itself consists of three mainland areas that can be reached by car. Additionally, there are more than 30 lakes, the two largest being Rainy Lake and Kabetogama Lake. All of these waterways seem to merge together in and around the Kabetogama Peninsula and countless islands and marshes of various sizes.

These other land areas can only be reached by boat.

Things to Do in Voyageurs National Park

This really is a water-based park. Thus, the most popular things to do in Voyageurs National Park include boating and fishing. To truly experience the park, you really do need to get out on the water. You can do that on your own boat or with a ranger-led or private guided boat tour. Honestly, I would say that doing a guided boat tour is an absolute must-do for all visitors to Voyageurs National Park.

Additionally, there are a few hiking trails, both on the mainland, the Kabetogama Peninsula and on some of the islands. There are also a few islands with historic buildings and old mines. One island even has a rock sculpture garden that you can explore.

Camping is another popular activity and the park maintains roughly 270 boat-in campsites. While you, technically, can paddle to some of these sites, many are a long way from the nearest boat launch. Thus, having a motorboat provides you with greater access to camping and exploring the many remote areas of the park. Note: there are shuttle services available for those who want to camp but don’t have a boat.

Finally, one of the most popular things to do at Voyageurs National Park is explore by houseboat. In fact, some campsites are specifically designed for houseboats. I have to say, I think this would be a truly unique and epic way to enjoy the park! Alas, it wasn’t in the cards for us this time but maybe we’ll return and rent a houseboat one day.

Where to Go in Voyageurs National Park

The three mainland areas at Voyageurs National Park each have a visitor center:  Rainy Lake, Kabetogama Lake and Ash River. Of these, Rainy Lake is the closest to International Falls, just a 15-20 minute drive east of town. Here, you’ll find the park’s only year-round visitor center, which is also its largest.

Kabetogama Lake is a bit farther southeast (about 30-40 minutes from town). Ash River is just about 15-20 minutes east of that. Both have a small, seasonal visitor center. Kabetogama Lake is mostly used as a boat launch and dock. There are also a number of private resorts and lodges nearby. Ash River is a larger area. It, also, has a boat launch along with a couple of hiking trails.

Finally, there is a ranger station at Crane Lake, which is roughly 1.5 hours southeast of International Falls. We did not visit that area as it is not technically part of the national park.

One of the most popular destinations in the park is Kettle Falls. At Kettle Falls, you’ll find the Kettle Falls Dam and a hotel with a dining room and a very quirky bar. Seriously, you have to check out the bar, even if you don’t want a drink!

Some of the other popular destinations include the Ellsworth Rock Gardens, Harry Oveson Fish Camp, the gold mine on Little American Island, and I.W. Stevens Island, where Stevens operated a small resort and lived year-round for nearly 50 years.

Our Three-Day Voyageurs National Park Itinerary

Since we were visiting Voyageurs National Park with our RV, we camped on the mainland and relied on boat tours to see the majority of the park. Over our three days inside the park, we spent one day exploring the Ash River area, one day at Rainy Lake and one day on a boat tour to Kettle Falls from Kabetogama Lake.

For us, having three days at Voyageurs National Park was just about perfect. Could we have spent more time out on the water exploring? Absolutely. But, in this amount of time, we were able to stop at all three visitor centers and take one tour of Rainy Lake and one of Kabetogama Lake, including a visit to Kettle Falls. For us, that seemed like a fairly comprehensive visit.

We actually had a fourth day in International Falls but we spent it doing laundry and catching up on work (these posts don’t write themselves). Over the years, we’ve found that having an extra day allows us to slow down and enjoy the journey a bit more. It also provides an opportunity to reschedule any tours that might get canceled due to rain or other circumstances.

Of course, there are many different ways to spend three days at Voyageurs National Park. If you have your own boat, want to do some tent camping or enjoy the luxury of a houseboat, those are all great options.

Finally, you can easily move around the activities and days on our Voyageurs National Park itinerary. Some tours are only offered on certain days, so adjust as necessary, depending on tour availability.

Day 1: Explore the Rainy Lake Area and Take a Ranger-Led Boat Tour

The Rainy Lake Visitor Center is the largest of the park’s three visitor centers and the only one open year-round. It is also the starting point for several of the NPS boat tours.

At the visitor center, you’ll find a small exhibit area. This includes information on the Ojibwe (the Native Americans who the voyageurs traded with), the historic winter ice roads and some of the wildlife in the area. As usual, there is also a small bookstore. Of course, this is also a great place to ask a ranger any questions you might have about exploring the park.

Just outside the visitor center is a large dock for boat tours. There is also a boat launch for anyone who wants to take their own boat out on the water.

Voyageurs National Park Grand Tour

We chose to do the Grand Tour, which provides a tour of Rainy Lake and information on the cultural history of the area. You’ll also look for and learn about wildlife along the way.

This 2.5-hour tour makes a quick 20-minute stop at Little American Island. There, you can explore on your own or listen to the ranger talk about the short-lived gold mining operations of the 1890s. On the island, you’ll find a 1/4-mile accessible walkway that takes you past a couple of old mine shafts and out to an overlook.

Back on the boat, we continued our tour east on the lookout for bald eagles, loons and other wildlife. We passed by another old mine and the Harry Oveson historic commercial fishing camp, which operated into the 1980s. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to stop here, but there is a dock for those with their own boat.

Overall, the boat tour was a relaxing way to see Rainy Lake and learn more about the park’s history. While the ranger on this tour did mention the voyageurs, the narration focused more on the mining, fishing and geology of the park.

Reservations for this tour (and other park tours) must be made in advance at recreation.gov . All reservations for the summer season are available starting at 9:00 am on April 15, annually. Of course, this is subject to change, so be sure to check the park’s website for current information.

Note: this tour is a combination of the park’s Discovery Tour and Gold Mine Tour. Either of those would be good options if this one is unavailable.

Day 2: Visit the Ash River Area and Enjoy a Hike

Even though the Ash River Visitor Center is fairly small, there really is quite a bit to do in that area. In the summer, you’ll find a ranger-led interpretive canoe tour. There also are two different boat launches – one for canoes and kayaks and another for motorized boats. Finally, there are a few hiking trails and overlooks.

As you drive in from the highway, you’ll pass several turnouts for overlooks. The Beaver Pond overlook is the one that we recommend stopping at. While we didn’t see any beavers, we did see a beaver lodge and a few birds. Visiting early or late in the day will likely provide the best opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Inside the visitor center, you’ll find a small store with shirts, stickers, magnets, books and other park souvenirs. You can also watch the short, 12-minute park film (just ask a ranger).

One of the best views in this area can be easily reached with just a short walk behind the visitor center out to a point. This is also where you will find the all-important Voyageurs National Park sign! As this is primarily a water-based park, the only park sign is here, right on the water. Thankfully, it’s easy to get a picture of the park sign from land (or from a boat).

Ash River North Canoe Voyage

One of the best ways to learn about the history of the park and the voyageurs it is named after is through the park’s Ash River North Canoe Voyage. Reservations are available on recreation.gov . Note: be sure to search Voyageurs National Park Special Interpretive Programs to find this tour.

The program begins with rangers dressed in period costumes, telling a bit about the French-Canadian voyageurs and the hundreds of pounds of goods they transported across the continent. While this program is a little hokey, it is also an interactive and interesting way to learn about these people and the effort it took to transport these goods.

From there, you’ll get a safety briefing and some basic information about paddling before piling into the large 12-person canoe. The canoe is a modernized version of what the voyageurs used as they paddled these waters more than 200 years ago.

The actual paddling part of the program only lasts about 30 minutes. That said, it was a lot of paddling and the kids on our tour tired quickly. This is because the rangers are doing their best to show you just how hard the voyageurs actually worked. It is not a leisurely sightseeing paddle.

While we enjoyed this program, it wasn’t exactly what we expected. We were hoping for a little more paddling and exploring. In reality, it’s more about learning the history and how difficult the journey was for the voyageurs.

Overall, though, it is an interesting program that truly brings to life the history of the park.

Note: This program is also available at the Rainy Lake Visitor Center.

Hike the Blind Ash Bay Trail

Even at a water-based park, we always like to find a hiking trail, if there is one. There’s just something about stretching your legs and getting off the beaten path that we really enjoy. At Voyageurs National Park, the Ash River area is a great place to do just that.

Check out our 10 essentials for hiking here .

The Blind Ash Trail turned out to be a great hike for us. This 3-mile lollipop trail starts near the Ash River Visitor Center and takes you through the forest to Blind Ash Bay. At the beginning of the hike, you’ll have a few glimpses of water through the trees. From there, you’ll travel inland until you reach the bay.

When you get to the loop part of the hike, we suggest that you veer to the left. This will avoid a steep uphill and saves the best views for last. As you first approach Blind Ash Bay, you’ll be fairly close to the water. There are a couple of places where you can walk down and take pictures or just enjoy the solitude.

As you continue around, counterclockwise, you’ll reach a high point. This view is what makes the hike worth the moderate effort. Take time to enjoy the view, snap a few pictures and take it all in.

Overall, the trail is moderately difficult. There is quite a bit of up and down, but nothing too strenuous. Still, the rolling hills are fairly constant adding up to a total of about 500 feet of uphill. Thankfully, though, the trail is shaded pretty much the entire time, so at least you don’t have the sun beating down on you.

It’s also worth noting that the trail is quite covered with roots and rocks, so you’ll definitely need to watch where you step.

If you don’t want to do a hike quite this long, you could stop a the Forest Overlook that is along the main entrance road. Here, you’ll find a 0.5-mile trail through the boreal forest. We actually skipped this trail since we had already done a longer hike. But, it looked like a good alternative for a shorter trek.

Day 3: Kabetogama Lake and Kettle Falls Boat Tour

The Kabetogama Lake Visitor Center is another small, seasonal visitor center. Again, you’ll find a few exhibits on the wildlife and history of the park. Here, we watched a park film that focused on the historic voyageurs. This film is dated but did a great job of depicting the harshness of their daily life. Note: I would guess that both park films are available at all three visitor centers, but I can’t say for sure.

There’s really not much else in this area, other than the boat launch. And, that’s where we met for our tour to Kettle Falls.

We originally had a tour to Kettle Falls scheduled with the National Park Service. Unfortunately, they had to cancel our tour due to limited staffing. Thankfully, we were able to find a private tour to take instead. Honestly, though, I think it worked out for the best.

On the private tour, we got a few extra stops that were not included on the park tour. Additionally, it was nice to be on a small boat and really get to interact with the captain and get to know the other guests a little. Finally, our private tour was a little more flexible with the timing, allowing us to join in on an unexpected ranger tour at the rock garden. Yes, this means you should not make set dinner plans!

Kettle Falls Boat Tour

The historic Kettle Falls Hotel, located right on the US-Canada border, is the only lodging within Voyageurs National Park and is only accessible by boat. It is also one of the most popular destinations within the park for day trip visitors.

We met Captain Paul at the Kabetogama Visitor Center. Our tour consisted of just 8 adults and 1 child. It was super relaxed and friendly, with Paul slowing down or stopping periodically to tell us personal stories and park history all throughout the journey.

Our first stop was the Ellsworth Rock Gardens. Jack Ellsworth and his wife spent their summers here, where he worked on this garden from 1944 to 1966. The rock garden sits atop a large granite outcrop and all sculptures are made from rocks he found around the island.

Be sure to pick up a brochure with information as you walk ashore. As mentioned previously, we lucked out and happened to be there right as a ranger-guided tour was beginning. I could not find that this was advertised anywhere, so you might want to ask ahead of time if anything is scheduled.

The second stop was I.W. Stephens Island. This remote island was Stephens’ year-round home for nearly 50 years. He also welcomed guests at the Pine Cove Resort from 1937 to 1959. While here, you can tour a couple of historic buildings and learn more about life on this remote island.

Kettle Falls Hotel

Finally, we made it to Kettle Falls! Construction of the Kettle Falls Dam and the nearby hotel started around 1910. The small dam (along with its Canadian counterpart on the other side of an island) was built by the logging industry to raise the level of the lake, making it easier to get logs out of the area.

The hotel was, reportedly, financed by Madame Nellie Bly. As such, the rooms were sparsely decorated as they really were used for just one thing and let’s just say there, typically, wasn’t a lot of sleeping involved…

Just a few years later, Robert Williams bought the hotel for $1,000 and four barrels of whiskey. It’s been in business as a hotel ever since. Today, the rooms are used by legitimate overnight guests but it is my understanding that the rooms are still very basic. This truly is a place you go to get away, not for luxury!

Also at the Kettle Falls Hotel, you’ll find a dining room, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner for both overnight and day-use guests. We’ve heard that the Wild Rice Soup is fantastic but we opted to just hit the Lumberjack Saloon for a drink and a snack.

Whether you are interested in getting a drink or not, you should definitely pop into the bar. I don’t want to spoil all the fun, but let’s just say that the bar has “settled” with the hotel over time. And, the artwork pays homage to the hotel’s sordid beginnings.

Still, the saloon has a decent beer selection, with both local and well-known options. Additionally, it has a full bar. Its signature drink is the frozen “pink drink,” which is simply frozen vodka and pink lemonade. I’ll just say, it may not be fancy, but it is good! And dangerous. Seriously, I had to stop myself from just gulping it down like it was a Slurpee from the 7-11.

In terms of snacks, they offer either a cream cheese or a jalapeño stuffed pretzel. We opted for the jalapeño, which was not at all spicy but definitely tasty. If desired, you can grab a drink at the bar, then head over to the dining room for a full meal.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Kettle Falls. The boat tour itself was absolutely perfect, even if we did get a little wet at times. The Kettle Falls Hotel really is a blast from the past. No frills, just basic accommodations in the middle of nowhere. I could definitely enjoy coming here for a few days to escape!

Note: the NPS offers tours to Kettle Falls from both Ash River and Rainy Lake. Additionally, there are a number of private companies and lodges that offer group tours or private charters. We found our tour with Captain Paul through a Voyageurs National Park Forum Facebook group. You can also find a list of the approved concessionaires on the park’s website or check with someone at your hotel or campground. We were able to make the reservation for our Kettle Falls tour just a few days in advance. Of course, the sooner you book, the more options you are likely to have.

Voyageurs National Park in the Winter

Just like many northern national parks, Voyageurs National Park is very different in the winter. The lakes freeze over, turning this summer boaters’ paradise into a winter wonderland.

In the winter, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing are popular activities. There are also a couple of ice roads. I have to say, that is an idea that is both intriguing and terrifying for me!

Visiting Voyageurs National Park is absolutely possible in the winter. That said, it will be a much different experience. Personally, I would love to visit in the winter but I think you probably get a better idea of the park, initially, in the summer.

If you are interested in a winter visit to Voyageurs National Park, check out the park’s website to know what to expect before you start planning.

Where to Stay at Voyageurs National Park

International Falls makes for a great base for visiting Voyageurs National Park. You could also check in the tiny little town of Ranier, which is just east of International Falls.

Oddly, there aren’t many big chain hotels in the area, but there are a few local options. You will also find a variety of private lodges, resorts and campgrounds in International Falls and Ranier.

We chose to camp at the Rainy Lake RV Park, which is about halfway between International Falls and the Rainy Lake Visitor Center. This is a relatively small campground that sits right on the water. In fact, it even has several boat docks. That makes it popular with locals – it is obvious that many guests are long-term/seasonal residents.

Overall, we enjoyed this campground. The sites are well-spaced apart for a private campground and offer a picnic table and fire pit. The biggest downside is the lack of a bathroom, not great cell service (AT&T) and spotty WiFi.

Read our full campground review on RV Life here.

In our book, Moon USA RV Adventures , we also recommend The Pines of Kabetogama Resort (a private campground with full hookups) and Woodenfrog Campground (a state park with primitive sites). We haven’t actually stayed at either one, but both looked interesting from our research.

Of course, if you really want to get away for a few days, you could also stay at the Kettle Falls Hotel. The hotel will help you arrange transportation if you do not have your own boat. Staying at Kettle Falls or renting a houseboat are both something we would like to do on future visits!

Where to Eat and Drink in International Falls

I’m going to be honest, we really weren’t overly impressed with the dining options in International Falls. In fact, we didn’t recommend any restaurants in our book, other than the Lumberjack Saloon at Kettle Falls.

Still, we did eat out a couple of times and discovered one gem that you should definitely check out.

Sammy’s Pizza and Tavern

We ended up at Sammy’s Pizza Tavern after our Kettle Falls tour. After a long day on the water, we just didn’t have it in us to cook anything! The menu includes a variety of pizzas, strombolis, pasta and sandwiches. You can sit in the dining room or in the tavern.

To start, we decided to finally try some traditional poutine fries, a Canadian staple. I have to admit, there’s something about fries topped with cheese and gravy that doesn’t really sound all that appetizing. But, it actually did work and we both enjoyed it.

In terms of meals, Grant opted for a stromboli and I kept it simple with a cup of Chicken & Wild Rice soup and a dinner salad. The soup and salad were ok but nothing to get excited about. Grant did enjoy the stromboli, though.

This is a solid option if you are staying in a hotel or just need a night off from grilling at your campsite. But, I wouldn’t say eating here is a must.

Cantilever Distillery

Located in the tiny town of Ranier, the Cantilever Distillery is a hidden gem that you should definitely check out. The distillery and restaurant are located on the bottom floor of the Cantilever Hotel .

We each started with a flight – the aged spirits for Grant and clear spirits for me. Each flight consists of three tastings, two from their Woody’s label and one Cantilever. Grant’s flight included a rye whiskey, an Am-Can blend and bourbon. His favorite of these was Woody’s Rye. Later, he sampled the Cantilever Rye, which is, ultimately, what we bought a bottle of.

My flight included two different gins and vodka. I don’t typically sip straight vodka or gin, so it’s a little difficult to compare to other labels. Still, I really enjoyed both from the Woody’s label. We ended up getting a bottle of vodka for friends. I restrained from buying a bottle of gin that day. But, when we spotted it in a liquor store near Minneapolis, I decided to grab a bottle.

In terms of food, we had the smoked salmon dip to start. Then, Grant had the Torta al Pastor and I opted for the Pan Seared Lake Trout, which was served with Greek-style potatoes. We later found out that the executive chef is Greek and the sous chef is Hispanic. That definitely explains the fantastic flavors that we both found in our meals.

Finally, the cocktail menu here is absolutely phenomenal! The bartender stayed busy all night and was cranking out drinks left and right. The menu includes some unique offerings, such as a Smoked Lavender Old Fashioned.

We highly recommend stopping by to at least check out the spirits and enjoy a cocktail. And you certainly can’t go wrong with the food, either! Reservations are recommended and can be made on their website.

Nearby National Parks

As a remote park, the term “nearby” might be a bit misleading. Still, Grand Portage National Monument and Isle Royale National Park aren’t too far away and pair nicely with a visit to Voyageurs National Park.

In fact, we originally included a stop at Voyageurs National Park on our Great Lakes trip in 2019 . Unfortunately, we had some significant damage to our trailer and had to cut our trip short after leaving Grand Portage, MN.

Check out our Great Lakes National Parks itinerary.

Grand Portage National Monument

Located on the western shore of Lake Superior, Grand Portage National Monument was a fur trade outpost and hub of trading between the native Ojibwe and Europeans. It is also a great place to learn more about the grueling portage the French-Canadian voyageurs made here.

Before visiting Voyageurs National Park, I really didn’t make the connection between the two sites. Now, it makes complete sense and I am very glad that we made the stop at Grand Portage National Monument several years ago.

The drive between International Falls and Grand Portage is roughly 4.5 hours. Visiting both sites gives you the opportunity to learn about both the canoe voyage and the portage to understand the full scope of the voyageurs.

Isle Royale National Park

Isle Royale National Park is even more remote than Voyageurs National Park. This island park on Lake Superior can only be reached by boat or seaplane. A boat ride will take a minimum of 2-3 hours. Yes, this is where you truly go to get away! We also visited this park in 2019.

Before we even got off the boat, we understood why it is the most revisited national park, even though it is the least visited, in the “lower 48.”

The scenery of Voyageurs and Isle Royale are similar but they certainly are not the same park. Voyageurs is fairly easy to get to; it’s getting around that is more difficult. Isle Royale is harder to get to but, once there, you have a variety of hiking trails and paddling options to easily explore the island.

You can reach Isle Royale from Grand Portage but it’s a really long boat ride to the lodge. If staying at the lodge, it is probably better to leave out of Copper Harbor or Houghton, MI.

Yes, getting to Isle Royale National Park is difficult and somewhat expensive. For the scenery and solitude, though, it’s worth it!

For more information on both of these parks, read our full article on visiting Isle Royale National Park .

Final Thoughts on Visiting Voyageurs National Park

Grant and I both really enjoyed Voyageurs National Park. It is breathtakingly beautiful. And, not crowded (at least not when we visited).

We really enjoyed getting out on the water and just taking in the solitude and scenery. But, without your own boat, you will be somewhat limited in how much you can see.

Still, there are many options for tours or private charters so you should be able to see and do as much or as little as you have time (and money) for.

Our three-day Voyageurs National Park itinerary allowed us to do tours on both of the biggest lakes and explore several of the historic points of interest. We even got to lace up our hiking shoes and hit the trail.

While we do feel like we had a complete visit to the park, we could also see ourselves returning one day to do even more. Staying overnight at Kettle Falls Hotel, spending a few days on a houseboat or even snowmobiling in the winter would all be fabulous.

After visiting 48 “National Parks” and 300 total park sites, it’s great to still find new and interesting places that we’d love to return to!

Travel Resources

What do you use to find a flight.

We use Skyscanner to find deals on flights. Skyscanner has a great interface and compares tons of airlines for the best pricing and routing. That said, it does not always have every airline and some airlines will have better deals on their website. Still, Skyscanner is a great place to start. Click here to search for a flight.

What do you use to find a hotel?

We typically stay at Hilton properties , so we use the Hilton website . You can find good Hilton Honors discounts or AAA discounts for a hotel there. We make great use of our free night certificates from our Hilton Honors American Express. Click here to book a Hilton property.

If there are no Hilton properties available, we use TripAdvisor to read reviews and book the hotel. We find we can get the best price that way. Click here to search for a hotel.

We recently partnered with Stay22 to add interactive maps to each of our destination posts. This will allow you to see a plethora of hotels and vacation rentals all in one responsive map of the area.

What if I need more space than I can get at a hotel?

We use Vrbo for the times when we have rented a cabin for a weekend getaway, like this cabin in Townsend, TN , or needed to rent a house for a large family vacation. We had a great experience with them in terms of refunding deposits when COVID hit and will continue to use them. Click here to search for a vacation rental.

Who do you use for rental cars?

As a general rule, we book with Hertz for rental cars. We have had nothing but good experiences with them. Plus, we really like unlimited mileage and not worrying about crossing state lines. We have even rented from Hertz overseas in both Slovenia and Croatia . Click here to book a rental car.

How about booking a cruise?

We have found some amazing prices for booking a cruise through Cruise Direct . We have saved a lot of money on our cruises compared to what we found elsewhere, making a last-minute Bahamas cruise even cheaper. Click here to book a cruise.

What if I want to rent an RV?

We highly recommend Outdoorsy for RV rentals. We rented a camper van for a week to visit Rocky Mountain National Park for the elk rut and Custer State Park for the Buffalo Round-Up and had a blast. The program was easy to use and we really enjoyed the freedom of having a camper van for that trip. Click here to rent an RV.

What do you use for booking tours?

We don’t often book tours. Typically, we like to do stuff on our own. That said, there are some experiences you can’t have any other way. So, when we do want to book a tour, we always check Viator first. Click here to book a tour.

Do you use anything to get discounts on the road?

We make extensive use of both Good Sam and AAA on the road. Good Sam is normally regarded as a discount card for RVers at campgrounds and Camping World but anyone can use the 5 cents off a gallon at the pump at both Pilot and Flying J. Click here to get a Good Sam membership. We have had AAA as long as we have been married and it has more than paid for itself in discounts at hotels, aside from the peace of mind of having roadside assistance. Add in paper maps and the ability to get an international driver’s license and it is more than worth it for any traveler out there. Click here to get a AAA membership.

After Months of Gibberish, Voyager 1 Is Communicating Well Again

NASA scientists spent months coaxing the 46-year-old Voyager 1 spacecraft back into healthy communication

By Meghan Bartels

Artist's rendering of Voyager in space

NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft is depicted in this artist’s concept traveling through interstellar space, or the space between stars, which it entered in 2012.

NASA/JPL-Caltech

After months of nonsensical transmissions from humanity’s most distant emissary, NASA’s iconic Voyager 1 spacecraft is finally communicating intelligibly with Earth again.

Voyager 1 launched in 1977 , zipped past Jupiter and Saturn within just a few years and has been trekking farther from our sun ever since; the craft crossed into interstellar space in 2012. But in mid-November 2023 Voyager 1’s data transmissions became garbled , sending NASA engineers on a slow quest to troubleshoot the distant spacecraft. Finally, that work has paid off, and NASA has clear information on the probe’s health and status, the agency announced on April 22.

“It’s the most serious issue we’ve had since I’ve been the project manager, and it’s scary because you lose communication with the spacecraft,” said Suzanne Dodd, Voyager project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in an interview with Scientific American when the team was still tracking down the issue.

The Voyager 1 spacecraft is a scientific legend : It discovered that Jupiter’s moon Io, far from being a dead world like our own companion, is instead a supervolcanic world . The craft’s data suggested that Saturn’s moon Titan might have liquid on its surface. And for more than a decade, Voyager 1 has given scientists a glimpse at what space looks like beyond the influence of our sun.

Yet its long years in the harsh environment of space have done a number on the probe, which was designed to last just four years. In particular, degraded performance and low power supplies have forced NASA to turn off six of its 10 instruments, and its communication has gotten even spottier than can be explained by the fact that cosmic mechanics mean a signal takes nearly one Earth day to travel between humans and the probe.

When the latest communications glitch occurred last fall, scientists could still send signals to the distant probe, and they could tell that the spacecraft was operating. But all they got from Voyager 1 was gibberish—what NASA described in December 2023 as “a repeating pattern of ones and zeros.” The team was able to trace the issue back to a part of the spacecraft’s computer system called the flight data subsystem, or FDS, and identified that a particular chip within that system had failed.

Mission personnel couldn’t repair the chip. They were, however, able to break the code held on the failed chip into pieces they could tuck into spare corners of the FDS’s memory, according to NASA. The first such fix was transmitted to Voyager 1 on April 18. With a total distance of 30 billion miles to cross from Earth to the spacecraft and back, the team had to wait nearly two full days for a response from the probe. But on April 20 NASA got confirmation that the initial fix worked. Additional commands to rewrite the rest of the FDS system’s lost code are scheduled for the coming weeks, according to the space agency, including commands that will restore the spacecraft’s ability to send home science data.

Although, for now, Voyager 1 appears to be on the mend, NASA scientists know it won’t last forever. Sooner or later, a glitch they can’t fix will occur, or the spacecraft’s ever dwindling fuel supply will run out for good. Until then NASA is determined to get as much data as possible out of the venerable spacecraft—and its twin, Voyager 2, which experienced its own communications glitch earlier in 2023 .

NASA finally hears from most distant spacecraft Voyager 1 months after it was last heard from

N ASA has finally received intelligible information from Voyager 1 , after the most distant spacecraft from Earth stopped sending back understandable data in November.

It takes 22 1/2 hours to send a signal to Voyager 1, more than 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometres) away in interstellar space. The signal travel time is double that for a round trip.

Contact was never lost, rather it was like making a phone call where you can’t hear the person on the other end, a JPL spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

It comes after scientists exploring the farthest reaches of our solar system detected an eerie 'hum' using the Voyager 1. Instruments on board NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft, which more than a decade ago left our solar system's outer reaches, picked up the faint, monotonous sound in 2017.

Experts said it was caused by the constant vibrations from small amounts of gas found in the near-emptiness of interstellar space. It represents the background noise present in the vast expanse between star systems, according to a study published in the journal Nature Astronomy.

For all the latest on news, politics, sports, and showbiz from the USA, go to The Mirror US .

Stella Koch Ocker, a Cornell University doctoral student in astronomy and lead author of the study, said: "The persistent plasma waves that we've just discovered are far too weak to actually hear with the human ear. If we could hear it, it would sound like a single steady note, playing constantly but changing very slightly over time."

Voyager 1 previously detected disturbances in the gas in interstellar space triggered by occasional flares from our sun. NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft had a brief blip in August before flight controllers corrected a mistake that had led to weeks of silence. Hurtling ever deeper into interstellar space billions of miles away, Voyager 2 stopped communicating. Controllers sent the wrong command to the 46-year-old spacecraft and tilted its antenna away from Earth.

Then, NASA’s Deep Space Network sent a new command in hopes of repointing the antenna, using the highest-powered transmitter at the huge radio dish antenna in Australia . Voyager 2’s antenna needed to be shifted a mere 2 degrees. It took more than 18 hours for the command to reach Voyager 2 — more than 12 billion miles (19 billion kilometres) away — and another 18 hours to hear back.

The long shot paid off, as eventually, the spacecraft started returning data again, according to officials at California’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

NASA has finally heard back from Voyager 1 again in a way that makes sense.

Launched in 1977 to study Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 1 has been exploring interstellar space — the space between star systems — since 2012. Its twin, Voyager 2, is 12.6 billion miles away and still working fine.

NASA's Voyager 1 resumes sending engineering updates to Earth

NASA’s Voyager 1 resumes sending engineering updates to Earth

For the first time since November, NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft is returning usable data about the health and status of its onboard engineering systems. The next step is to enable the spacecraft to begin returning science data again. The probe and its twin, Voyager 2, are the only spacecraft to ever fly in interstellar space (the space between stars).

Voyager 1 stopped sending readable science and engineering data back to Earth on Nov. 14, 2023, even though mission controllers could tell the spacecraft was still receiving their commands and otherwise operating normally. In March, the Voyager engineering team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California confirmed that the issue was tied to one of the spacecraft's three onboard computers, called the flight data subsystem (FDS). The FDS is responsible for packaging the science and engineering data before it's sent to Earth.

The team discovered that a single chip responsible for storing a portion of the FDS memory—including some of the FDS computer's software code—isn't working. The loss of that code rendered the science and engineering data unusable. Unable to repair the chip, the team decided to place the affected code elsewhere in the FDS memory. But no single location is large enough to hold the section of code in its entirety.

So they devised a plan to divide the affected code into sections and store those sections in different places in the FDS. To make this plan work, they also needed to adjust those code sections to ensure, for example, that they all still function as a whole. Any references to the location of that code in other parts of the FDS memory needed to be updated as well.

NASA’s Voyager 1 resumes sending engineering updates to Earth

The team started by singling out the code responsible for packaging the spacecraft's engineering data. They sent it to its new location in the FDS memory on April 18. A radio signal takes about 22.5 hours to reach Voyager 1, which is over 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) from Earth, and another 22.5 hours for a signal to come back to Earth. When the mission flight team heard back from the spacecraft on April 20, they saw that the modification had worked: For the first time in five months, they were able to check the health and status of the spacecraft.

During the coming weeks, the team will relocate and adjust the other affected portions of the FDS software. These include the portions that will start returning science data.

Voyager 2 continues to operate normally. Launched over 46 years ago, the twin Voyager spacecraft are the longest-running and most distant spacecraft in history. Before the start of their interstellar exploration, both probes flew by Saturn and Jupiter, and Voyager 2 flew by Uranus and Neptune.
