Camping-Fahrzeuge

Er ist schon nach wie vor ein Traum, der Campingbus California von VW. Die neuste Version des Bulli, der VW California 6.1 , bringt nicht nur zahlreiche Verbesserungen beim Möbelbau und der Bordtechnik mit, sie verfügt im neuen Model Beach Camper ebenfalls über eine Miniküche. Das macht den Bulli perfekt fürs Strand-Hopping – nicht nur zur Sommerzeit. Die drei Varianten des Campingbus California 6.1 wird es ab Herbst 2019 zu kaufen geben, wir haben ihn uns jetzt schon auf dem Caravan Salon Düsseldorf angeschaut.

Basisfahrzeug T6.1 auf die Zukunft eingestellt

Schon das Basisfahrzeug T6.1 hat einige Neuerungen, die auch dem der Campingversion California 6.1 guttun. Der neue Frontspoiler lässt den Campingbus sportlicher erscheinen. Dazu tragen unter anderem die flachen Scheinwerfer und die Heckleuchten bei.

Neu sind auch die Zweiliter-Dieselmotoren. Diese erfüllen die Schadstoffnorm Euro 6d-Temp und leisten je nach Ausführung zwischen 90 und 199 PS. Der VW California ist ab der mittleren Leistungsstufe ab 150 PS auch mit Allradantrieb erhältlich. Leider sind im Gegensatz zum T61. im California Campingbus keine Benzinmotoren oder die Elektrovariante vorgesehen.

Zahlreiche Neuerungen gibt es auch im Cockpit. Der Campingbus California hat ein neues Armaturenbrett erhalten. Gegen einen Aufpreis ist ein digitales 10,25 Zoll großes Kombiinstrument erhältlich. Dieses enthält eine Bildschirmanzeige für Drehzahlmesser, Tacho und vieles mehr. Integriert ist auch ein Online-Infotainment-System, welches Sprachbefehle versteht.

Besonders komfortabel ist die neue elektromechanische Servolenkung . Sie ist die Basis neuer optionaler Assistenzsysteme. Mit dem aktiven Spurhaltungsassistent bleibt der Camper genau dort, wo er hin soll. Super praktisch ist auch der “Park Assist” , der das Einparken auf Wunsch automatisch übernimmt und so das Fahrzeug selbst in die kleinste Lücke bugsiert. Dazu gibt es ein Anhänger-Rangiersystem “Trailer Assist” . Für mehr Fahrstabilität sorgt der Seitenwindassistent , der bei starkem Wind dem VW Camper auf Kurs hält. Mit Flankenschutz , Verkehrszeichenerkennung , Ausparkassistent , Begabfahrassistent und “Front Assist” kann einem kaum noch etwas passieren.

Der VW California – ein Campingbus in drei Varianten

Den VW California 6.1 wird es in drei Varianten geben. Zur Auswahl stehen wie gewohnt die Modelle Coast, Ocean und Beach. Alle drei Modelle sind wie gewohnt mit einem Aufstelldach und seit dieser Modellreihe auch alle mit einer Miniküche ausgerüstet. Jede Modellvariante ist durchdacht und hat ihre Besonderheiten. Neben einer ausgeklügelten Ausstattung gibt es auch reichlich Zubehör und Extras.

VW California 6.1 Beach Camper

Das Einstiegsmodell des VW California gibt es ab der Version 6.1 in zwei Varianten: als Beach Tour mit PKW-Zulassung, Schiebetüren links und rechts und drei Sitzgurten auf der Rückbank und als Beach Camper mit Wohnmobilzulassung, nur einer Schiebetür auf der Beifahrerseite dafür aber einer Miniküche auf der Fahrerseite. Diesen könnt ihr euch in der Video-Roomtour weiter oben im Detail ansehen.

Die serienmäßige Ausstattung des Beach Camper beinhaltet:

VW California 6.1 Coast

Die anderen beiden California 6.1 Modelle Coast und Ocean unterscheiden sich nicht in der grundsätzlichen Ausstattung bestehend aus Aufstelldach, Möbelzeile und digitalem Camper-Bedienteil wohl aber in den Details.

Die serienmäßige Ausstattung des Coast beinhaltet:

• manuelles Aufstelldach mit zwei seitlichen Fenstern und Faltenbalg in „Basalt Grey“
• Möbelzeile inklusive Schränken, Kompressorkühlbox, zweiflammigem Gaskocher und Spüle
• je 30 l Frisch- und Abwassertank
• Hochbett Doppelbett 1.20 x 2.00 m mit Tellerfedern
• unteres Bett mit Aufstellfunktion für Kopfteil und Bettverlängerung
• Preis ab 56.203 €

VW California 6.1 Ocean

Der größte Unterschied zum Modell Coast besteht im serienmäßig enthaltenen elektrohydraulischen Aufstelldach und der größeren Varianz des optionalen Interieurs.

Die serienmäßige Ausstattung des Ocean beinhaltet:

• elektrohydraulisches Aufstelldach mit 3 Fenstern und einer Frontöffnung, Faltenbalg in „Basalt Grey“
• Heckfenster mit Doppelverglasung
• Preis ab 62.266 €

Natürlich sind alle drei Modelle auch optional mit umfangreicheren Ausstattungen zu haben.

Ein Blick in den Innenraum verspricht Gemütlichkeit

Und das auf engstem Raum. Was VW hier geleistet hat, kann sich sehen lassen. Die Möbelzeile bei den Modellen Ocean und Coast hat ein frisches Design in gemütlichen Holzfarben erhalten. Aber auch ein „Graphit Grey“ ist möglich. Die Sitzbezüge und Sitzverkleidungen sind auf die Farbe der Möbelzeile abgestimmt. Raffinierte Details lassen keine Wünsche offen. Mit Drucktastenschlössern lassen sich die Abdeckungen von Kocher, Spüle und Kühlbox  öffnen. Die einst silbernen Rollos am Heckschrank mussten praktischen Schiebetüren mit Druckknöpfen weichen. Das lässt die gesamte Raumgestaltung gemütlicher und wohnlicher erscheinen. Aufgewertet wird die Einrichtung durch eine dimmbare LED-Beleuchtung und USB-Steckdosen.

Die Bordtechnik immer im Blick

Die Bordtechnik wird über ein multifunktionales Bedienelement mit Farbdisplay und Touch-Funktion gesteuert. Dieses befindet sich in der Dachkonsole, von wo aus sich alles bequem steuern lässt. Kühlbox, Innenbeleuchtung, Standheizung und sogar das elektrohydraulische Aufstelldach können bedient werden. Aber auch wichtige Informationen zum Füllstand von Wassertank und Batterie werden hier abgerufen. Neu ist die Funktion „Niveau“ . Über diese Funktion lässt sich der Längs- und Querwinkel steuern. Damit kann das Fahrzeug optimal auf unebenen Flächen ausrichten werden.

Ein kleines Highlight ist die Sonnenaufgangs-Option , die über den Menüpunkt „Licht“ gesteuert und per „Wecker“ aktiviert wird. Mit der Sonnenaufgangs-Funktion werden individuell auswählbare LEDs im Wohn- und Dachbereich langsam bis zur gewünschten Helligkeit hochgedimmt.

California Beach Camper (2021) im Test : Bulli mit verstecktem Kochmodul

Der VW T6.1 California Beach hat als Variante "Camper" ein neues Küchenmodul. Außerdem bot der Testwagen die seltene Gelegenheit, die serienmäßige Sechsgang-Handschaltung auszuprobieren.

Zunächst muss ich etwas ausholen: Ich kann die Kritiker des VW California verstehen – obwohl die Kritik seit Jahren in ihrer Substanz nicht an Kreativität gewonnen hat: Erstens sei das ja gar kein richtiges Wohnmobil und zweitens viel zu teuer. Man bekäme für einen Cali ja zwei Alkovenmobile mit viel Platz und Dusche und so.

Die große Preisfrage

Jetzt hat VW unseren Testwagen extra moderat ausgestattet, damit der Preis nicht allzu sehr in die Höhe schnellt. Die Lackierung in Ascotgrau kostet keinen Aufpreis. Schaltgetriebe statt DSG, und im Cockpit drehen analoge Zeiger ihre Runden. Am Ende bleibt der Testwagenpreis sehr hoch, grenzwertig hoch: 69.478 Euro und 28 Cent.

Okay, die zwei Alkoven bekommt man dafür nicht, aber einen gut ausgestatteten Teilintegrierten. Nur: Mit dem kann man nicht zum Einkaufen, in die Kita, zur Arbeit fahren. Der Preis des Cali relativiert sich dann, wenn er als Erstwagen für den Alltag und Zweitfahrzeug für den Urlaub dient.

Wer das Leben in einem Bus kennt, weiß, auf was man sich einlässt. Die wenigsten hauen aus Versehen 70.000 Euro auf den Tisch, um zwei Wochen später konsterniert festzustellen, dass der Bus ja gar kein Bad und nur eine Miniküche hat und trotzdem verdammt viel Geld gekostet hat.

Beach: Der VW California ohne Möbel

Die Beach genannte Cali-Variante ist die ohne Möbelzeile. Sie hat ein Aufstelldach mit Bett und eine Schlafsitzbank mit drei Gurtplätzen. Und bei der neuen Ausführung als Beach Camper auch eine Kochstelle. Allerdings ohne Spülbecken.

Das Kochmodul steckt in der linken Seitenverkleidung – ja wirklich. Es ist so versteckt, dass man es nur findet, wenn man weiß, wo man suchen muss. Die Platte wird rausgezogen und flutscht locker in ihre Position. Links hinterm Fahrersitz versteckt sich die 2,8-Kilo-Gasflasche. Sie versorgt den kleinen Kocher. Und der feuert im Test ganz zügig Wasser für einen Tee an.

Zusätzlich steckt in der Schiebetür aufbewahrt ein Campingtisch , der draußen stehen oder an der Kante des Kochmoduls eingeclipst werden kann. Mit Küchenmodul samt Arbeitsfläche und Tisch gibt es viel Platz zum Kochen und Essen. Als Spülbecken gibt es Wannen aus Silikon oder LKW-Plane.

Das Bett oben ist bereits zum Grundpreis von 56.730 Euro mit Tellerfedern unterlegt, was den Liegekomfort erhöht. Optional gibt es einen roten Zeltbalg, der sich vorn komplett öffnen lässt.

Die manuelle 6-Gang-Schaltung im VW T6.1

Ob man das DSG oder das Schaltgetriebe im VW T6.1 wählt, ist auch eine Frage des Preises. 2500 Euro kostet das Doppelkupplungsgetriebe.

Auf Urlaubsreisen nicht schalten zu müssen ist vor allem im unübersichtlichen Verkehr fremder Städte entlastend, aber auch auf langen Etappen. Doch die Kupplung des 6-Gang-Schalters ist gegenüber der Beinmuskulatur gnädig, Schleifpunkt und Dosierbarkeit sind präzise.

Die Position des Schalthebels ist seit dem T6 ergonomisch ideal. So lassen sich auch ausgedehnte Strecken kuppeln und schalten, ohne zu sehr zu ermüden. Dazu harmoniert der vibrationsarme Antrieb mit den im Testwagen vorhandenen 150 PS.

Was eignet sich für wen?

Familie? Alltag? Manchmal Camping-Urlaub? Dann vergessen Sie die Möbel. Camping-Geraffel haben Sie eh genug dabei. Ja, es wäre manchmal nett, mehr Stauraumordnung im Urlaub zu haben. Aber nur, wenn Sie wirklich häufig den Ort wechseln. Geht’s vor allem auf den Campingplatz? Nehmen Sie ein Vorzelt und Stauboxen mit, oder lagern Sie Gepäck und Vorräte in einem Wurfzelt aus. If you want to get stuck into a bit of outdoor adventure, but you’re not keen on sleeping in a swag or a tent, and you really don’t like the idea of towing a camper-trailer or caravan, then maybe a camper van will work for you.

This is VW’s T6.1 California Beach camper van – it looks pretty retro cool (especially with its optional two-tone paint job), it has a fair few features as standard and may offer you a low-key gentle introduction to a van-based adventure lifestyle.

But does the Beach, based on VW’s mid-size Transporter van and a refreshed version of a classic, represent a camper which is actually more style than substance?

Does it represent good value for the price? What features does it come with?

Our test vehicle is the five-seat California Beach TDI 340, with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine , seven-speed DSG (direct shift gearbox) and VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system . It has a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $86,990 (plus on-road costs). 

Our test vehicle has a few extra options over standard – including the Appearance package ($5760), Two-tone paint ($3990), electric pop-top roof ($2990), and the off-road package ($1600).

The appearance package includes art velour micro-fleece seat-covering with leather seat bolsters, seat heating for driver and front passenger seat, LED headlamps with separate LED daytime running lights and LED tail-lights, headlight range-adjustment (automatic), high-beam light assist, and the digital cockpit (more about that later).

The two-tone paint is described as “Candy White with Bay Leaf Green”.

The electric pop-top roof has two side windows and a panorama front opening window.

The off-road package consists of a mechanical rear differential lock and hill descent control.

All of those add-ons push the price as tested to $101,330 (plus on-road costs).

Available options that aren’t on our test vehicle include a Driver Assistance Package (with adaptive chassis control and parking assist, for $2290), and an Electric Door Package ($2590).

Standard features on the California Beach include (take a breath) 180° swivel seats (the driver's seat and the front passenger) with armrests and lumbar supports, the full-length rail system to rearrange or remove seats, a power latching sliding door on the left and right, power latching tailgate, Discovery Media 8.0-inch navigation system , colour touch display (with easily initiated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ), USB-C/AUX/SD input, six speakers, FM frequency, wireless app-connect, electrically folding heated exterior door mirrors, automatic headlights with rain-sensing wipers and dimmable rear view mirror, privacy glass in the passenger compartment, Climatronic air-conditioning system, fully sprung loft bed (1200mm x 2000mm) with comfortable-sprung base and mattress, bed extension for rear bench seat with comfort sleeping mattress, camping table and two folding chairs, camper control unit with touchscreen, pull-out awning with housing and rail in black or silver, programmable auxiliary air parking heater, second battery, 17-inch Aracaju wheels (with a steel spare), and trailer-wiring preparation.

The seats have “Quadratic” cloth upholstery in Titanium Black as standard; our test vehicle, as mentioned, had the appearance package’s art velour micro-fleece seat-covering with leather seat bolsters. 

Exterior colour options include Candy White, Ascot Grey, Cherry Red, Pure Grey (all solid); and 

Bay Leaf Green, Copper Bronze, Fortana Red, Indium Grey, Mojave Beige, Ravenna Blue, Reflex Silver, Starlight Blue. Pearlescent: Deep Black (all metallic:); or two-tone options such as Candy White with Copper Bronze, Candy White with Bay Leaf Green (on our test vehicle), or Candy White with Ascot Grey.

Is there anything interesting about its design?

VW’s designers have given the classic van appearance a real fresh 21st century touch-up. The California T6.1 is a retro-cool camper whose street-cred factor is also bolstered enormously by the optional two-tone paint job. 

It certainly turned a lot of heads during the seven days I had it.

What are the key stats for the engine and transmission?

It has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine (producing 110kW at 3250-3750rpm and 340Nm at 1500-3000rpm), a seven-speed dual-clutch auto (or DSG, direct shift gearbox) and VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

Volkswagen transporter trakkadu 400 awd camper van 2018 review, how practical is the space inside.

The California’s interior is nice and comfortable – a blend of life-friendly hard plastic and soft-touch surfaces – with a solid build quality to it all, as well as superior fit and finish. 

This camper seats five (two at the front, and three on the rear bench seat), can sleep up to four, and is a very functional space. All controls are easy to find and operate, and our test vehicle's appearance package option includes the 10.25-inch high-resolution colour touchscreen, so that was even better than the standard 8.0-inch screen.

The 180° swivel front seats are simple enough to manipulate into position, as long as you adjust the seat-backs so they don’t hit or rub against other surfaces on the way around.

The second row bench seat has child-seat anchor points , and two ISOFIX points .

That rearrangeable/removeable rear seat (which slides fore and aft on the camper’s full-length rail system) gives California users the ability to turn that pew into a bed or to position it in order to maximise the space inside for meals, entertaining etc.

The van has a camp table (tucked away inside the right-hand sliding door), two camp chairs (stowed away in the rear door), and a magnetic rechargeable torch.

The awning, stored and extended from above the sliding door on the camper’s right-hand side, is easy enough to set up and pack away – it only takes a few minutes – but even though it can be done by one person, I recommend two people do it because that makes it an easier and faster job.

Beyond all of those things, what is crucial to this camper van is the hub of the California’s operating system: the camper control panel, a touchscreen mounted upfront above the rear-view mirror. Using it, you can operate the pop-top roof, monitor the camper’s battery levels, and even make sure the camper van is level, so you don’t end up trying to sleep on a slight gradient.

The California Beach is 4904mm long with a 3000mm long wheelbase. It is 1990mm high, 1904mm wide, and has a listed kerb weight of 2457kg . 

Once the electric pop-top roof is fully upright, easily done via the camper control panel, the California is an extra 1050mm taller than when that pop-top is not extended. (Note: check for any obstacles above the camper (eg, a tree branch) before you try to raise the roof.)

When that roof is up – and the bed base is lifted – there is a claimed 2300mm standing room inside the California, giving you a bit more flexibility in terms of moving around inside the vehicle while it is stationary, e.g. during meal preparation or while setting up the rear-seat bed etc.

The van also has block-out blinds – roller blinds on the windscreen and magnetic curtains on the side windows – to help the occupants get a good night’s sleep.

In terms of cargo space, this California has 4.3 square metres in total; and the load compartment is 2532mm long (without the rear seats); 1627mm wide (1220mm between the wheel arches); and 1320mm high. Load height at the rear is 571mm from the ground.

What's it like as a daily driver?

The California Beach is not an unsubstantial vehicle – at 4904mm long with a 3000mm long wheelbase, 1990mm high, 1904mm wide, and a 2457kg kerb weight – but if you’ve spent any time in a mid- to large SUV or wagon , or a ute then you’ll be fine. Even if you’ve only ever driven a hot hatch , it won’t take long to become accustomed to driving this camper.

Steering is natural, well weighted and precise and that means a lot for a camper van like this, because, while it's not gigantic, the California can feel a tad weighty through sharper corners. Turning circle is an estimated 11.9m. 

The California's turbo-diesel engine and seven-speed dual-clutch auto work well together: it’s a nice, smooth pairing that gives this camper a bit of welcome pep about it and generally makes for an unfussed drive.

Bonus: there is ample visibility in the California: you have glass everywhere, and that makes for a relaxed, almost open-to-the-elements driving experience. 

The camper’s suspension set-up – independent McPherson struts, with coil springs and gas-filled dampers ( at the front ), and semi-trailing independent rear axle with coli springs and anti-roll bar at the rear – helps to yield composed ride and assured handling.

Even if your blacktop route becomes a bit twisty, or even very hilly this is generally a well-behaved and smooth-driving vehicle. 

What's it like for touring?

You do have the option in this of taking on tracks that are a little bit tougher than run-of-the-mill bitumen because it has VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. And, remember, the $1600 off-road package adds a mechanical rear differential lock and hill descent control to this camper van’s driver-assist tech. But none of that means you should attempt hard-core rock-crawling in your California.

With 193mm of ground clearance and approach, departure and ramp breakover angles of 21.8, 16.7 14.3 and respectively, it’s clear that this camper is not built for anything remotely resembling serious off-roading, but it is more than capable enough of tackling light-duty off-roading, i.e. well-maintained gravel or dirt roads with few, if any, corrugations, and in dry weather only. But its AWD is best suited to improving your drive experience in traction-challenged circumstances, such as a wet highway or the like, rather than making it any kind of low-speed, low-range 4WD beast.

Payload is listed as 623kg. Worth noting is the fact that the roof load maximum (closed) is listed as 50kg.

Worth keeping in mind is the fact that the pop-top roof has a listed maximum load of 150kg, so I reckon it’s a better space for kids, than adults. There is a safety net to ensure energetic little sleepers don’t tumble out of bed during the night. The pop-top bed has dimmable LED lighting.

The California has towing capacities of 750kg (unbraked) and 2500kg (braked). GVM (gross vehicle mass) is a claimed 3080kg.

It rides on Bridgestone Duravis R660 (215/60R17) on Aracaju wheels (with a steel spare ). It has a tyre pressure monitoring system as standard.

If you want to kit out your California you’re well catered for because Volkswagen Genuine Accessories include everything from head-rest tablet holders, rubber floor mat sets, and slimline weather-shields, through to roof bars, bicycle tailgate carriers, and tow bar kits.

How much fuel does it consume?

Fuel consumption is a claimed 7.5L/100km on a combined cycle . 

Actual fuel consumption on this test was 9.9L/100km. 

It has an 80-litre fuel tank, and a 13-litre AdBlue tank.

What safety equipment is fitted? What safety rating?

The California Beach doesn't have an ANCAP safety rating  because it hasn't been tested here yet, but safety features include front, side head thorax curtain airbags, autonomous emergency braking , blind spot monitoring , rear traffic alert and lane assist, crosswind assist, driver fatigue detection, and a reversing camera .

What does it cost to own? What warranty is offered?

It has a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty . 

Pricing for service intervals, every 12 months or 15,000km (whichever comes first), is yet to be confirmed but expect to pay in the vicinity of $1450 for a three-year service plan, and approximately $2300 for a five-year service plan.

The appeal of a camper van, especially one like the California Beach , is blatantly obvious because it's functional, it's comfortable and it's nice to drive. 

But, for me, a lot of other things make more sense, especially at this price point: you could buy a new 4WD wagon/SUV or ute and a camper trailer – and you’d have cash left over and your adventure capabilities would be much greater than they are in a camper van, even an AWD one, such as this.

Or you could buy a used motor home – a vehicle equipped with sleeping, cooking and bathroom/toilet facilities – and you’ll probably still have money left over from a hundred grand to spend on other gear to bolster your camping experience. 

However, there’s no denying that the California Beach is more than fit for purpose, and may be an ideal introduction to the adventure lifestyle for some.

If you experience a breakdown on the road that hinders your ability to continue driving, you can contact the 24/7 mobility service provider for assistance. Here’s what you need to do:

• In your customer account, you can locate the telephone number of the mobility service provider responsible for your vehicle. You will find your personal link to the customer account in the email containing your booking confirmation or rental contract. Please note that the mobility service provider can assist you in German or English and only regarding issues related to the vehicle’s driving restrictions. For inquiries about camping functions, refer to the Help Center as the mobility service provider cannot provide assistance in this area.
• I is important to document the breakdown as thoroughly as possible. Take photos or videos of the situation, including any visible damage or relevant surroundings. Make sure to note down the incident number provided by the mobility service provider. Send an email to [email protected] with all the documentation related to your breakdown and include the incident number.

Have you had an  accident or suffered damage on the road , but your camper is running perfectly? Then please proceed as follows:

• Take photos of the damage and the surroundings and send an e-mail with a damage report to  [email protected]  .
• In case of an accident, please also fill out the international accident report (in the glove compartment) and send it to the email address above.
• If you are involved in an accident, it is mandatory to inform the police at the scene. Failure to do so may result in insurance coverage issues.

Our Carefree Packages cover you in the event of an accident or damage. With the “Basic” package, you already have basic coverage with comprehensive and breakdown insurance included. By upgrading to an “Advanced” or “Complete” package, you can insure yourself against additional types of damage and at the same time reduce your deductible, i.e. the costs you have to pay yourself in the event of damage.

Our station locations can vary significantly. Some are centrally located, while others are a bit more on the outskirts. Please check the detail pages of our stations to see the specific location of the station where you have booked your camper. Additionally, you will find tips on how to get there and information about on-site parking options on the individual station pages.

Unfortunately, our locations do not offer secure parking facilities, and parking spaces are often limited or unavailable. However, there might be potential to find parking in nearby residential or commercial areas. For the best option, leave the car at home and use public transportation, or take a taxi to our station is recommended.

You can rent a variety of camping gear from roadsurfer. We offer various camping equipment, ranging from roof racks and bike carriers to portable toilets. Just take a look at our equipment page , where we have listed all the extras available for rent.

When collecting your vehicle, please make sure to bring the following documents:

• Identity card or passport of all drivers
• Driving license of all drivers
• VISA or Mastercard (credit or debit) for the deposit. Please make sure the card has sufficient funds available, and remember to the PIN. If necessary, payment can also be made by EC card at German stations.

For customers with a UK registration, a driver license check is mandatory during the pick-up process at our UK stations. This is necessary to ensure full coverage by our insurance package.

Please note: If you have more than 6 points on your driving license and/or specific past driving convictions, you will not be eligible to drive our vehicles.

For this purpose, if you are renting in the UK you will need to provide the following:

• Driving license number
• Address information (as displayed on Driver’s license)
• National Insurance ID
• You can enter the required information on the website GOV.UK in advance and generate a check code and show it at the time of pick-up at the station.

If you have a driver’s license from another European country and are picking up our vehicles at any UK station, you are not required to undergo the driver license check.

To rent a camper van in the UK, you must be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver’s license for at least one year.

Campervan Review: 2023 Volkswagen California 6.1 Beach

Volkswagen have been a market leader in campervan sales for years. In 2023, is the Volkswagen California 6.1 Beach the best campervan on the market? Let’s check it out!

The global pandemic changed the way many of us approached travel. It certainly did for me. We stopped thinking about international travel and focussed more domestically. Sales of campervans, camper trailers and caravans exploded. Younger generations started to discover what grey nomads have known for years. Camping is awesome!

Why the Volkswagen California 6.1 Beach?

The Volkswagen California 6.1 is based on VW’s most durable and reliable commercial vehicle platform. It can be your daily drive for the family as well as a weekend camper that can easily sleep four people. It has a flexible design, great towing capacity and VW’s reputation for producing quality vehicles is unprecedented.

The new generation T7 version of the Multi-van is currently available in Europe. However, it’s unlikely to hit Australian shores until 2024. As a result, most people want to stay with the current 6.1 version. However, you will need to get a move on. Most of the allocation to come to Australia have already been snapped up.

How does it look?

The California Beach continues to offer a modernised take on VW’s iconic Kombi. Whether you’re picking the kids up from school or spending a relaxing weekend away at the beach or in the bush, your van stand out and look the part.

As far as people movers and commercial vehicles are concerned, the Volkswagen California 6.1 Beach is one of the more stylish out there. Multiple great paint options, matching painted bodywork, alloy wheels, LED light package and a chrome embossed grille.

The bold two-tone paint options are very retro cool. Although, I must admit they took me a little while to warm to. If you’re not quite there yet you can still go with solid and metallic single tones.

On first glance, the California Beach blends in so well with other people movers and commercial vehicles in traffic that you may not even notice that it’s a campervan.

What about the greasy bits?

All the current generation Volkswagen vans are powered by a 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine.

Of course, the van is front wheel drive. The entry level TDI 340 produces 110kW of power and is paired with a seven-speed automatic gearbox. It’s not really going to blow your hair back but still adequate for everyday use.

The TDI450 is more powerful option at 146kW due to being fitted with a second turbocharger. That could be your choice if you want a bit more squirt around town.

The dual clutch seven speed gearbox is smooth and works well with the engine. Although, it can feel a little sluggish off the line. However, you get used to it quite quickly. In my opinion, the Volkswagen does its best work at cruising speed on the highway. It will comfortably sit there all day.

The Volkswagen California Beach TDI340 has a combined fuel consumption figure of 7.5L/100km and a relatively large 80-litre fuel tank. You can certainly travel to some far-off places on one tank of diesel.

I love the elevated driving position and find the Volkswagen easy to drive. The visibility is great which makes parking and manoeuvring in tight spots a breeze. The seats and steering wheel have plenty of adjustment, even for a short guy like me.

Ride comfort is pretty good. It handles most bumps reasonably well but it’s not like driving a Range Rover. However, you can’t comfortably sleep four people in a Range Rover either.

What is the Interior Styling of the Volkswagen California 6.1 Beach like?

The forward cabin is typical Volkswagen. Like many of the vehicles in the VW range, it has a combination of digital and analogue features.

You’ll still need to stick the key in the barrel and twist to start the van. That can be a little hard to get used to these days. Especially when the majority of vehicles have keyless entry and push-button start.

The digital instrument display and touchscreen infotainment system is like that available in the Volkswagen Golf. The touchscreen is functional, responsive and has good resolution.

It has manual steering wheel adjustment which is both tilt and reach adjustable. The front seats are also manually adjustable. They both come with fold down armrests for comfort on the road and can swivel 180 degrees when you’ve reached that perfect campsite for the night.

Volkswagen continue to utilise their rail system with the rear seats. The rear seat will lay completely flat to allow for the mattress to go over the top. It’s wide enough to sleep two adults. However, it is a little tight and may take a couple of nights to get used to it.

The electro-hydraulic roof is a highlight on this van. My recommendation would be to get this option over the manual version. The roof is a high-quality construction and it’s controlled by the touch operated Camping Van Control Panel. In less than one minute, the roof will completely open to reveal another double bed. You can also adjust the light and heating from the Camping Van Control Panel.

Speaking of lighting, the California has LED lighting throughout. It even has a magnetic LED torch with its own charging port behind the driver’s seat. Handy when you arrive at your campsite after dark.

Other Features

The Volkswagen California 6.1 Beach comes with two fold-up chairs that are stored in a zippered compartment in the tailgate. You also get a picnic table that stores in one of the sliding doors.

As always, there is never a shortage of storage space in the Volkswagen. Dual pockets in the front doors plus bins and compartments under the seats.

If you need to get out of the weather, you can take cover under the massive tailgate or wind out the awning on the side on the van.

There is also a good range of options available for the California including off-road package, power-sliding doors, fog lights and park assist. Check with your local Volkswagen dealer to see the full list of standard equipment and optional extras.

The Volkswagen California Beach also comes in a variety of solid, metallic and two-tone paint options. My favourite colour is the Mojave Beige Metallic/Deep Black Pearlescent.

How much does the Volkswagen California 6.1 Beach TDI340 cost?

The California 6.1 Beach TDI340 front-wheel drive starts from $90,990 plus on-road costs. You can load the van up with options but keep in mind that could add $20,000 to the price tag.

The more powerful TDI450 will cost you around $100,990 plus on-roads and options.

The only real comparable van to the California in the market is the Mercedes Benz Marco Polo which comes in around $10,000+ more expensive.

The California Beach is covered by a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty with one year of roadside assist.

Servicing is required every 12 months or 15,000km – whichever comes first. A five-year care plan is also available through Volkswagen Australia which covers scheduled servicing. The pricing is from $1400 – $1800 depending on the model.

What about Safety?

The California has only front and side airbags for the driver and front passenger. Something to think about if the kids are in the back.

Standard safety inclusions in the California are auto emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, reversing camera and front and rear parking sensors.

It currently doesn’t have an ANCAP rating.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

I love that Volkswagen don’t try to reinvent the wheel with each new model. You always know what you’re going to get but it’s just a little bit better each time.

As an everyday drive, the Volkswagen California 6.1 Beach is practical and comfortable. You get the aesthetics, design and comfort that we’ve come to expect from Volkswagen passenger vehicle range.

As a camper, it only takes 10 minutes to set up and pack down. Perfect if you decide on a last-minute weekend getaway.

Now for what I didn’t like. The TDI340 engine does feel a little underpowered but it’s more noticeable around town than it is on the highway. Having said that, it’s more than adequate and you get used to it quickly.

The California lacks some of the things that more serious campers want in a van. Things like a kitchenette, fridge, water supply and upgraded power system. If you want these things, you’ll have to look at other vehicle options or check out aftermarket outfitters like VanEssa .

The Volkswagen California Beach is just cool! You could buy something cheaper and with less style….but who wants that?

When it comes to choosing a campervan , the Volkswagen California 6.1 Beach works well as an everyday family drive and as a camper. Pick the kids up from school on Friday and head straight out to your favourite bush or beach location for a great weekend!

Ähnlich einem weißen Kaninchen zieht VW auf dem Caravan Salon Düsseldorf den neuen California 6.1 Beach Camper sowie den California 6.1 Beach Tour aus dem Hut. Neu ist natürlich nicht der Beach an sich, aber die Tatsache, dass die Lighversion des California jetzt immer eine Mini-Küche mit an Bord hat, und als Beach Tour mit zweiter Schiebtür zu haben ist, überrascht uns dann eben doch etwas. Vor allem die Umsetzung der Kochgelegenheit begeistert auf den ersten Blick und macht den Beach nochmal interessanter als Alltags-Wochenend-Trip-Modell.

Denn die Mini-Küche – bestehend aus einem einflammigen Gaskocher mit Abdeckung und einer Ablage – verschwindet komplett in der Seitenwand zwischen B- und C-Säule und kann daher sogar bei Nutzung der dreisitzigen Rückbank (dritte Reihe) verwendet werden. Unterhalb der Koch- und Arbeitsplatte befinden sich an der Seitenwand ein großes, offenes Staufach und ein geschlossenes Fach für die 1,8 kg-Gasflasche.

Bunter Urahn

Je nach Rückbankversion in der dritten Reihe wird der VW California 6.1 Beach damit zum sechs- oder siebensitzigen Van. Dabei gilt: Als Wohnmobil zugelassene Beach haben maximal fünf Sitzplätze. Wer den Beach mit Miniküche und sechs oder sieben Sitzplätzen nutzen möchte (dann aber als PKW anmelden muss), bestellt ihn deshalb einfach als Tour mit Pkw-Zulassung statt als Camper, wählt im Paket die linke Schiebetür ab und die Miniküche hinzu –  Zack, erledigt.

Serienmäßig ist der California 6.1 Beach unter anderem mit Alu-Aufstelldach mit Balgstoff in „Basalt Grey“, Camper-Bedienteil mit Touchscreen in der Dachkonsole, Dachbett (neu konzipiert mit Federtellern), Drehsitzen vorn, Zweisitzbank plus klappbare Bettverlängerung inkl. Schlafauflage unten und seitlichen Staufächern, Klapptisch in der Schiebetür, Klappstühle in der Heckklappe, Klimaanlage „Climatic“, Markisenschiene in Schwarz und Schiebefenster links bestückt.

Der Einstiegspreis liegt bei rund 49.000 Euro.

Introducing the Volkswagen California Beach 6.1

In exciting developments, we are pleased to inform you that the latest incarnation of the Volkswagen California Beach 6.1 will soon be available in the UK in two versions — The ‘Camper’ and The ‘Tour’, both with features never before seen in this vehicle.

Initially Volkswagen withdrew the Beach from the UK market in 2019, much to the dismay of many loyal enthusiasts, but now, in 2020 Volkswagen have reversed this decision and will be returning the Beach to the UK, with orders opening in late October 2020 and prices starting at £52,062.

The ‘Camper’ version will include a small stowaway mini kitchen unit as standard — this is regardless of rear seating options and broadens the vehicle’s versatility in terms of camping with families or groups.

However, if the internal kitchen doesn’t appeal, the ‘Tour’ version will come with twin sliding doors as an alternative, thus making entry to the rear possible from both the left and the right — this could prove a useful addition to UK buyers concerned about leaving the van from the roadside.

Both Beach versions will include a new digital camper control unit in the roof console, and both will come with the option of an electrical operated hydraulic roof. Another addition, also previously only available in the Ocean, is the pull-in blind system that covers the front windscreen, rather than the previous screen which had to be manually removed and stored after use.

The kitchen is lifted up from the side panel between the B- and C-pillar and folded outwards. The stainless steel unit has a single-hob gas cooker on the left and a small hotplate/worktop on the right. Above the gas cooker there is also a cover plate, which when lifted up for cooking serves as a splashback.

If the mini kitchen’s hotplate/worktop is not needed, you simply tip it up and lower it back into the side panel, which is no wider than its counterpart with no kitchen. Beneath the hotplate/worktop, against the side wall, is a wide storage compartment and an enclosure for the 1.8kg gas bottle.

The California 6.1 can be used in everyday life like any normal MPV, often by families who may need to carry more than four or five people. For such situations Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles offers individual seats on the second seating row.

Despite the fitted kitchen, the new California 6.1 Beach provides room to add not just one, but two extra individual seats. With the mini kitchen closed, the bench seat and individual seats can be repositioned without any restrictions. Depending on bench seat version on the third row, the camper thus becomes a six- or seven-seat MPV. The compact design of the variable kitchen emphasises the fact that the California 6.1 is more than ever a true all-rounder in the compact campervan market.

Schiebetür im Doppelpack

Ein Zugang zum California CONCEPT von zwei Seiten – so lässt sich das Fahrzeug einfach in Ihren Alltag und Ihre Camping-Abenteuer integrieren. Für einen angenehmen Ein- und Ausstieg sorgt die Schiebetür auf der rechten Fahrzeugseite. Die zusätzliche Schiebetür auf der Fahrerseite bietet zusammen mit der völlig neu konzipierten Küchenzeile und einem Außenklapptisch verschiedene Möglichkeiten des Kochens und Essens im Außenbereich. Die Küchenzeile mit Spüle, verschiebbarem Induktionskochfeld, bekanntem Gaskocher und Kühlschrank ist beim California CONCEPT übrigens von außen erreichbar und dank Markise vor Sonne und Regen geschützt. Ein weiterer Clou: ein kompakter Grill, der im Küchenblock verstaut und ebenfalls bequem von außen entnommen werden kann. Dieser zweite Zugang erweitert das Platzangebot deutlich und macht aus dem California CONCEPT schon fast eine Drei-Raum-Wohnung.
