Studio Tour Tokyo.

To mark the occasion, Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo revealed the first of many magical film sets - The Hogwarts Express on Platform 9 ¬æ. At an event featuring Mana Ashida and Harry Sugiyama, the media were invited to pose for the' push a trolley through the wall to Platform 9 ¬æ' photo opportunity and even step onboard the train. Visitors exploring the Studio Tour will be able to imagine how Hogwarts students would have felt and enjoy the same experiences as they journeyed to Hogwarts.

The Platform 9 ¾ set was created by the original Harry Potter filmmakers using authentic techniques. It's home to the Hogwarts Express which is an original British steam locomotive that was built in 1929 called The Dumbleton Hall. Operated by the Great Western Railway, it continued to run for over 35 years until it was retired. The locomotive was refurbished in England, then shipped to Japan to take up its position at the Studio Tour.

Torben Jensen, VP and GM, Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo - The Making of Harry Potter said: "The Studio Tour is a completely new experience for Harry Potter fans in Japan and I'm so excited to open the doors on 16th June.  In addition to fantastic interactive features, multiple photo opportunities and the world's largest Harry Potter shop, the Studio Tour will exclusively showcase a number of incredible film sets that are one of a kind."

Ms. Mana Ashida commented: "I love the Harry Potter series, so I'm very happy to be standing on Platform 9 ¾. I've heard that some of the sets will be on show for the first time in Japan and I'm really looking forward to seeing those."

Mr. Harry Sugiyama said: "I'm here today as a presenter, having narrated the English version of the film that introduces Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo in Japan and I'm really looking forward to exploring the sets for the first time.  I am very excited to see the Hogwarts Express."

Also featured in this section of the Studio Tour is The Great Wizarding Express, a set that is exclusive to Tokyo, which appeared in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore . The train carriage is art deco in styling, to match the era, and is decorated with ornate detailing throughout recreating the appearance of birdseye maple, ebony and brass inlay strips.  Depicting the scene where Newt Scamander leads an intrepid team of wizards, witches, and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, the mannequins display the costumes of Newt Scamander, Jacob Kowalski, Theseus Scamander, Bunty Broadacre, Yusuf Kama and Eulalia "Lally" Hicks .

The Studio Tour will also be home to the largest Harry Potter shop in the world, featuring 14 themed sections that are decorated with over 7,000 bespoke and specially sourced props. The areas are beautifully designed and take inspiration from elements of the shops on Diagon Alley including Honeydukes, Ollivanders and Flourish and Blotts. A huge range of products will be available to buy, many of which have been exclusively developed for Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo. In addition, visitors can enjoy a choice of restaurants and caf√©s which will serve a celebration of traditional British fare such as fish and chips, roast beef, English breakfast and Afternoon Tea.

This will be the largest indoor Harry Potter attraction in the world and visitors can expect to spend around four hours exploring the only Warner Bros. Studio Tour to open in Asia.  Building on the phenomenal success of Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - the Making of Harry Potter which opened in 2012 and has maintained exceptional visitor reviews, Warner Bros. Instead, visitors explore the world of Harry Potter on foot through iconic film sets. Digital guides, which further enhance the self-guided experience with narrations in Japanese and English, are available for an additional fee.

The main attractions in the Studio Tour are the iconic sets , which recreate the magic and atmosphere of the movies, including one which is exclusive to Tokyo. The sets offer plenty of photo opportunities and activities, such as green screen experiences like riding a broomstick, becoming a Hogwarts portrait and stepping into the crowd of a Quidditch match. Note that selected activities and experiences require an additional fee. Visitors can further learn about the props, costumes and detailed artworks of the film series.

A number of food and drink establishments can be found at the Studio Tour, offering visitors a varied menu, including Butterbeer, the popular wizarding drink. Additionally, there are also two shops, where visitors can look forward to purchasing Wizarding World products. The shops can be accessed only by those with valid tickets.

Harry Potter Studio Tour: Muggles' Guide to Tickets, Getting There, and More

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo — The Making of Harry Potter finally opened on June 16, 2023! Luckily, we had a first look behind the veil.

Check out this guide to find out how to save your galleons and not spend it all on Butterbeer.

Potterheads can also get their fix of Polyjuice Potion at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter inside Universal Studios Japan theme park .

What is The Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo — The Making of Harry Potter?

warner bros studio tour tokyo tickets

The Tokyo Potter experience isn’t an amusement park. In other words, don’t expect to ride a Hippogriff roller coaster. There are, however, interactive experiences, such as becoming a spectator of a Quidditch match and riding a broomstick.

The main fun to be had is touring the likes of Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, and the Ministry of Magic and seeing actual displays of sets, costumes, and props. Some of these attractions will be recreations, but others will be the authentic article used in the films.

Since the Tokyo Tour promises to give fans a unique way to experience the wizarding world of Harry Potter, you could argue that it’s better than an amusement park.

How to get there

¥ 188 13 minutes from Ikebukuro to Toshimaen

warner bros studio tour tokyo tickets

The Studio Tour was built from the ashes of the old Toshimaen theme park in Nerima City , which is only about a 15-minute train ride from central Tokyo (Ikebukuro). The nearest train station is Toshimaen on the Oedo and Ikebukuro/Toshima lines, and the entrance is around a 5-minute walk away — spot the stag and doe patronus statues. They also have a big parking complex if you’d prefer to drive.

Look out for the Ikebukuro and Toshimaen railway stations to get a Harry Potter makeover — you might be able to board the train at Platform 9 ¾ to get there.

Getting tickets to the Studio Tour

¥ 6,500 for adults Get tickets here

The Tour requires all bookings to be made in advance and distributes visitor arrivals evenly to prevent congestion. This means you won’t have to wait in massive queues, regardless of popularity.

There are three main prices: ¥ 6,500 for adults, ¥ 5,400 for ages 12–17, and ¥ 3,900 for ages 4–11. Under 4s enter for free. Tickets are non-changeable and non-refundable. You can buy from the official website — although be warned, in true British style, you may end up waiting in a queue — or from other ticketing websites like KKday .

What to see and do at the Harry Potter Studio Tour

The tour is split up into an indoor soundstage and outdoor backlot areas. The indoor soundstage will contain most of the main attractions like the film sets, while the outdoor backlot will showcase iconic houses, vehicles, several sculptures, and an outdoor seating area. You’ll find props and costumes throughout, so keep an eye out.

Explore the Harry Potter sets

Note: When you first enter, there won’t be any bathrooms for around an hour.

Be sorted at the Great Hall

warner bros studio tour tokyo tickets

The Hogwarts Great Hall will be the first set you happen upon after exiting from the cinema. Find costumes worn by some of the actors and other props. You can even spot Dumbledore, Snape, and teachers at the top of the hall, as well as overhearing part of the sorting ceremony.

Inside Hogwarts

warner bros studio tour tokyo tickets

Here you’ll get a taste of what it would be like to work, sleep, and study at Hogwarts. Walk around classrooms and watch potions brew independently, take a Defence Against the Dark Arts class, or grab a book from the library. You’ll see Slytherin and Gryffindor common rooms, as well as dormitories, Dumbledore’s office — including his Pensieve billowing mist — and moving staircases.

Go out of bounds in the Forbidden Forest

Try not to get killed — or worse, expelled — when you venture into the forest. Large trees and creepy sounds make this section very atmospheric but be warned, those who have arachnophobia (the fear of spiders) might want to give the end a miss.

Where it all began

warner bros studio tour tokyo tickets

Once you’ve made it through the Forbidden Forest and past Hagrid’s Hut, you’ll come across a very familiar-looking house — Number 4 Privet Drive. Placed outdoors (where houses should be), Harry’s original home is surrounded by a giant wizard’s chess set, the bright blue Weasley car, Hagrid’s motorbike, and the Knight Bus. You can even go inside the home and relive unforgettable book and movie moments.

Board the Hogwarts Express at Platform 9 ¾

warner bros studio tour tokyo tickets

While the real steam train — and station — is still in London, this version was created as a direct copy. Sounds and smoke bring it to life and there are many iconic photos to be shot here, including an overloaded luggage cart (or trolley) on its way back to the muggle world. You can even go inside the train and get a glimpse of some memorable scenes from the movies over the years. The Railway Shop is also on the platform and provides wands, robes, and other products.

Tip: The final gift shop may have very long queues, so buy something here if you want to grab your souvenirs quickly.

Save your galleons at Diagon Alley

warner bros studio tour tokyo tickets

One of the best moments of the London Tour was Diagon Alley and Tokyo also doesn’t disappoint. The rickety, lopsided shops are infused with realism, from Gringotts Wizarding Bank to Ollivanders wand shop and the colorful, enigmatic exterior of Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. You can peek into cobwebbed windows and listen to the moment Harry gets his wand.

Floo away in the Ministry of Magic

warner bros studio tour tokyo tickets

The Ministry of Magic set is unique to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo and it is more than impressive. Its walls alone are around 9 meters tall and it was constructed by the filmmakers who worked on the Harry Potter films. The emerald green tiles and central statue transport you into the working world of a wizard. You can also step into a Floo fireplace yourself and recreate the feeling of arriving for a day on the job.

Interactive experiences at the Harry Potter Studio Tour

warner bros studio tour tokyo tickets

The tour isn’t all about walking around and looking at stuff, you’ll also get to put on your best wizard or witch face for photos and videos numerous times: Be on the wall of moving portraits and do your best Fat Lady impression; become a spectator at a game of Quidditch and cheer on your house team; find your face on a wanted poster; ride a broomstick through central London; and see if you can pronounce Diagon Alley while using Floo powder.

Some of these experiences will come with a free download of your photo/video — you’ll need to use a QR code — and others like the broomstick experience will require you to pay quite a bit extra for physical or digital copies.

Behind the magic

warner bros studio tour tokyo tickets

When you aren’t using up all your phone space taking photos, you’ll find pockets of information about the process behind the films. Experience the whole of the Potterverse; sound, creature, set, costume, SFX, VFX, and endless design departments all get their moments to shine. Eddie Redmayne, the lead actor in The Fantastic Beasts films, even makes a virtual appearance.

What to eat and drink at the Harry Potter Studio Tour

warner bros studio tour tokyo tickets

There are four places to stop for Harry Potter-inspired snacks and drinks along the tour. The Backlot Café and Butterbeer Bar will be situated halfway through and the Food Hall and Frog Cafe will be waiting for you at the start or end of your tour.

Everyone will be scrambling to buy the very sweet, butterscotch-flavored Butterbeer at the world’s largest Butterbeer Bar. A glass does cost a steep ¥ 1,100 , but you can take home the tankard it comes in.

There are some British favorites at Backlot Café, including afternoon tea for ¥ 6,500 per person (you can’t book this in advance), Bangers and Mash (sausages and mashed potatoes) set for ¥ 2,900 , and — our recommendation — pumpkin soup for a reasonable ¥ 400 .

There’s also a ton more to try at the Food Hall — where you can sit below banners as if you were in the Great Hall — and the Frog Cafe.

What to buy at the Harry Potter Studio Tour

warner bros studio tour tokyo tickets

Apart from the Railway Shop on Platform 9 ¾, there is only one other gift shop at Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo and it is the world’s largest Studio Tour Shop. You can buy a whole host of wizard-related products and exclusive items, and it is the only store of its kind that offers a whopping seven products for personalization: Hogwarts acceptance letters, wands, robes, t-shirts, trunks, accessories, and notebooks. Of course, there are limitations; you can’t betray your house and have yellow lettering on a green Slytherin t-shirt.

You can also let the wand choose you, get a robe fitting, try Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans (shockingly ¥ 1,900 ) and other snacks, as well as buy jewelry and accessories, socks, mugs — you name it. It’s not cheap, so beware of overspending.

Is it in Japanese or English?

There will always be some form of English-language support, be it subtitles on videos, text below props, or an audio guide. The latter is useful for minor explanations that will be spoken in Japanese, such as in the poster room.

Some of the staff may have limited English-language capabilities, but there will always be someone around who can help.

How long does the tour take?

They recommend four hours for the tour and that’s exactly the time it took for us — this included a stop for some Butterbeer and snacks. It may take more or less depending on what you desire to do and how busy it gets.

How big is it?

The tour covers around 30,000 square meters (approximately four Quidditch fields), so we recommend wearing good muggle shoes.

Is it sustainable?

The Toshimaen area is well known for its green landscape, so Warner Bros and Co have committed to preserving the green space and making sustainability a key principle. New trees will be planted to replace old ones to maintain the greenery. From an economic perspective, the tour will aim to create local job opportunities and drive much-needed growth in tourism.

What other Harry Potter-related things can I see in Tokyo?

How many other studio tours are there.

The two main tours are the original Warner Bros. Studio Tour London and this newly opened Tokyo tour. There is also Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood, but this only features some Harry Potter artifacts. There is also as a large store in New York.

Overall, Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo — The Making of Harry Potter is an immersive, entertaining, and educational experience, so there’s plenty to look forward to.

Warner bros. reveals $115 million investment in harry potter attraction.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo - The Making of Harry Potter is the latest attraction themed to the ... [+] boy wizard (Photo by Zhong Ya/Xinhua via Getty Images)

Warner Bros. Discovery has revealed that it spent more than $114.9 million (£92.9 million) on its latest attraction themed to the boy wizard Harry Potter.

Called the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo - The Making of Harry Potter, the 30,000 square meter venue opened in June last year and follows a similar format to its counterpart at Leavesden Studios in the United Kingdom where all eight Potter movies were made along with the three Fantastic Beasts spinoffs.

Although the main series of Potter movies came to a climax in 2011, they are still casting a powerful spell on Warner's bottom line. More than 18 million people have streamed through the turnstiles of the UK tour since the doors to its two cream-coloured soundstages swung open in 2012. Its success led to the development of the tour in Japan where Potter is wildly-popular.

Before the Tokyo tour had even welcomed its first guest, adult tickets, which cost $45 each, had sold out for the following two months. According to its general manager Torben Jensen, by the end of last year the tour had become the leading inbound tourist destination in Tokyo.

Built on the former site of the Toshimaen amusement park, the tour features some of the most memorable sets from the Potter films as well as interactive displays which lift the lid on the techniques used to bring them to the silver screen.

Theme park design wizards Thinkwell Group handled everything from concept development and master planning right down to in-field art direction, installation supervision and training. Thanks to its involvement with projects such as Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, comfortably the most immersive theme park outside Disney and Universal, Thinkwell has built a reputation for its astounding attention to detail. The Potter tour in Tokyo is no exception.

Earth s new second moon is as big as the statue of liberty and scientists just found its origin, new apple id password reset issue hitting iphone ipad and macbook users.

All of the exhibits are either original or built from the original blueprints to give guests the same breathtaking experience that the actors had on the sets.

The tour sets off inside a soaring stone replica of the Great Hall in Hogwarts Castle where Harry and his chums tuck into feasts in the films. It is identical to it right down to the design of the crockery sitting on the gnarled banqueting tables. All that's missing is the candles floating above which were digitally added to the films in post-production.

Instead, spotlights hang from the rafters on the tour as they do on the actual set making the experience seem even more authentic.

Guests get to tour Hogwarts' Great Hall (Photo by KAZUHIRO NOGI/AFP via Getty Images)

Guests then get to peer inside Harry’s dormitory in Hogwarts Castle and walk the corridors of the Hogwarts Express steam train. There's even a full-size recreation of the Dickensian Diagon Alley with models of towering colorful characters embedded in the wonky buildings. Just like on an actual movie set, instructions are scrawled on the reverse of the façades showing how they fit together.

All of these sets can also be found in the tour's UK counterpart but the most spellbinding ones are unique to Tokyo. They kick off straight after the Great Hall and there's a great sense of reveal. As guests round a corner they are suddenly met with a full-size recreation of the famous Hogwarts' staircase which magically moves on screen when students climb its steps to get to the right doorway.

The version on the tour in Tokyo also moves although it isn't the full staircase so it looks more like a scene from an M.C. Escher drawing. The area is also home to an equally magical feature which fans have been crying out for since it first appeared on the silver screen in 2001's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone . In an iconic scene, characters in oil paintings beside the stairway begin talking to each other and a photo opp on the Tokyo tour allows guests to appear in one of them. It isn't the only interactive attraction on the tour.

There are no rides on the tour but some of the exhibits are almost as exhilarating. One digitally inserts guests onto the back of a broomstick and another makes it seem like they are in the crowd at a Quidditch match. First they decide whether to root for the heroic Gryffindor team or support their evil rivals Slytherin. Then a director tells them to duck, gossip, cheer or boo as they would if they were actually sitting in the bleachers. After that the cameras start rolling and the footage is edited into a sequence from the Potter films.

Visitors get to watch it on a big screen and even get to take the footage away as a digital souvenir thanks to the tour's partnership with Nasdaq-listed specialist theme park photography provider Pomvom. That's not all.

As anyone who has seen the Potter movies will know, wizards are governed by the Ministry of Magic and are teleported there in what is known as the floo network. They arrive in fireplaces engulfed in harmless green flames and in Tokyo, visitors can mimic this magical effect by posing for photos surrounded by smoke and strobe lighting. Although the journey to the Ministry of Magic is artificial, the spectacle is anything but.

Covering more than 900 square meters, the Ministry of Magic set was one of the biggest and most intricate ever created for the Potter film franchise and it has been rebuilt in Tokyo. The soaring set looks like one of London's historic underground metro stations as the walls are covered with thousands of green and red tiles made from lacquered wood. It has a Victorian air as oil lamps sit on desks in circular offices set inside tiled turrets on the upper floors. At ground level, the walls are lined with golden fleurs-de-lis flanking the fireplaces where visitors arrive in the films.

Another interactive exhibit enables visitors to design their own digital mask like those worn by the villainous Death Eaters. Anyone who fancies their chances against them can train in the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom. Just like in the movies, it is set in a stone-walled room with stained glass windows and a sweeping stone staircase. An iron chandelier hangs above and ancient artefacts, like a skull in a glass dome sit on a wooden desk. As a teacher tells visitors to call out spells the lights flicker, the skull sways, lightning flashes from behind the window and smoke sees off a Death Eater who appears on the staircase.

Throughout the tour, the original movie props are within touching distance including costumes, wigs and, of course, wands. Rows and rows of them. Every item is meticulously tagged with details of the film it was used in, the character it was used by and even the fictional materials it is meant to be made of.

Perhaps the only aspect of the UK tour which isn't as enchanting as the rest of it is the dining on the way. There's no problem with the food or drink, which of course includes Potter's favorite tipple of Butterbeer, a non-alcoholic beverage flavored like cream soda and butterscotch. However, the setting seems jarring as the dining area is designed like a studio backlot cafe which, ironically, fits the theme too well.

After being immersed in immensely detailed sets for hours, the backlot cafe seems spartan in comparison. Tokyo has taken this to heart as its dining area is themed to the frilly and flowery home of Hogwarts teacher Professor Umbridge. It serves afternoon tea in a pink and leathery central circular seating area surrounded by saucers on the walls which seem to show moving cats just as they do on the silver screen. Sparing no expense, Warner hired specialist restaurant developers Lumsden which worked with MinaLima, the graphic design firm behind the iconic art in the Potter movies.

It all comes at quite a cost. The Tokyo tour is run by Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden which also operates its UK counterpart. The company's latest filings are for the year to December 31, 2022 and show that Warner spent $66.3 million (£53.6 million) on the construction of the Tokyo tour during that time bringing the total to $114.9 million. It opened just over five months later so the spending didn't stop there and there may be more to come.

Many of the sets on the UK tour were bolted on after it opened to cater for its surging popularity. In Japan they were planned in from the beginning so accessibility and guest flow have been optimised. What's more, expansion spaces have already been allocated which will minimise disruption when they are developed.

Getting the attraction to opening day took much more than money and the wave of a magic wand. As Jensen points out, construction and training for the tour took place during the pandemic.

The Japanese-speaking Dane was educated at INSEAD and has a Diploma in Business administration from Copenhagen Business School. He has been working with Japanese corporations for more than 20 years and in late 1990s was Denmark's Trade Commissioner for Sapporo which involved him consulting with Danish companies to improve their results in the Japanese market. It worked as he increased the revenue of the Trade Commission by a staggering 250%.

Jensen went on to become project director of Merlin Entertainments' $300 million LEGOLAND Japan which opened in 2017. He didn't just run the operation but also managed the negotiations with the City of Nagoya to complete of the Master Development Agreement and the Land Lease Agreement. He even co-ordinated negotiations to complete the loan facility agreement between the main investor and a major Japanese bank.

It paid off as LEGOLAND Japan made an operating profit from its first year leading to a $100 million investment plan featuring a 252 room LEGOLAND Hotel and a SEALIFE attraction. Jensen also oversaw a sponsor program delivering $37.5 million of revenue over five years and helped to boost annual pass membership base to more than 100,000. It gave the resort firm financial foundations and put Jensen on Warner's radar. That really is a magic touch.
