Werribee Open Range Zoo

Why travel thousands of kilometres when a taste of African adventure is available just 30 minutes from Melbourne’s city centre, at Werribee Open Range Zoo? Located within the Werribee Park Precinct, an amazing array of animals live on 225 hectares of wide, open Savannah.

On the African River Walking Trail, come face-to-face with amazing gorillas, a pride of lions, see monkeys at play, watch cheetah prowl, and feel the sand between your toes and watch the hippos at Hippo Beach.

No trip to the Zoo is complete without heading out on safari across grassy plains where you will find rhinoceros, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and more grazing together on the picturesque Savannah.

All of the above, including the 40-minute safari tour, is included in the Zoo admission price. For those looking for even more adventure, book into an encounter. Feed a giraffe, stroke a serval, see amazing animals on the Savannah from an open vehicle plus many more to choose from.

The Glorious Sunset Safari Is Back At Werribee Open Range Zoo

This enchanting tour has returned for a sixth season - and there's adorable baby animals for you to discover.

Sunset Safari , the adventurous wildlife experience at  Werribee Open Range Zoo , is back for 2024. Hop on a safari bus and witness some of the world’s most majestic animals roam about the savannah at dusk. This year, you’ll admire some truly adorable animals, including young giraffes and zebra foals. Immerse yourself in this stunning natural adventure on Saturdays from January 13 to March 9 , from 5:30pm to 9pm.

Sunset Safari at Werribee Open Range Zoo

Journey through the  open-range savannah on the safari bus with your friends and family and see some amazing animals bathing in the golden beams of sunset. There’s three young giraffes for you to look out for, aged one and two years old, as well as other herds of animals, like rhinos and zebras. You’ll also see Scimitar-horned oryx calves, an antelope species that’s fighting its way back from extinction in the wild.

“Being on the savannah in the evening is beautiful, and we hope that builds a connection with wildlife and inspires future conservation heroes,” said Werribee Open Range Zoo Director Dr Mark Pilgrim.

After checking out the safari, venture along the walking trail and see meerkats, monkeys, wild dogs and a lion pride with three growing cubs.

In addition to the Savannah tour, you’ll listen to a Safari Guide and learn about hippos, their behaviours, their plight in the wild, and how to help.

Move and groove along to performances of drums, song and dance, which will bring the rhythm and soul of Africa to life.

You’ll also have access to a range of  food and beverage options  , such as bistro dining, snacks and cocktails. Take it to the next level by feasting with family and friends in a traditional African braai BBQ.

Sunset Safari helps Zoos Victoria support sister zoos and international partners, including the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC). This conservation centre specialises in wildlife research, animal rescues and community outreach programs.
