switzerland tourist sim card

Traveling to Switzerland and wondering what is the best way to stay connected? Switzerland is already expensive enough so don't get stuck with high roaming charges or slow overseas data roaming plans. This is the ultimate guide for finding the best sim card for your trip to Switzerland in 2024.

Find out everything you need to know about buying a prepaid sim card for Switzerland, where to buy a sim card, a comparison of the mobile internet providers, the best 4G/5G network in Switzerland, up to date prices as per April 2024, the best e-sim cards for Switzerland, my recommendation, restrictions on EU data roaming, a vlog with my experiences in Switzerland, info about international sim cards and more.

Being a  full time nomadic travel blogger  since 2012 I have been looking for the best ways to get connected for more than 10 years now. In the past I always used to buy a local prepaid sim card in every country  on arrival, nowadays I pretty much always use e-sim cards to stay connected.

Looking for the best way to stay connected is a vital part of my travel planning. Since I like to document all my travel tips and I am also trying to  visit every country in the world  you can already find more than 200 sim card guides on Traveltomtom from all over the world: Europe ,  France , Denmark , Germany , Netherlands , UK , Spain , Sweden ,  Paris , Rome , London , Amsterdam , Frankfurt , but also Hong Kong , Colombia , Brazil ,  South Africa , USA ,  Canada , Mexico ,  Turkey , Israel , Saudi Arabia , Malaysia and many more.

Why buying a sim card for Switzerland

Most hotels, bars and restaurants have free WiFi, yet Traveltomtom still recommends to get a sim card for Switzerland to stay connected and have a working data connection on your phone. Life is simply so much easier these days when you have internet on your phone. Think about ordering an Uber, get directions on Google Maps, finding a hotel, supermarket, restaurant and so on. Many reasons for you to get a sim card for Switzerland. And what about emergency situations or checking your banking apps?

Buying a local prepaid sim card on arrival in Switzerland is easy or simply order an e-sim card for Switzerland on the internet, even easier. It will make your trip to Switzerland much more fun.

Also simply don't rely on WiFi, some hotel WiFi's are slow, have little reach in your room and above all public WiFi is an UNSECURED network. Your data is not protected. The use of a VPN is recommended.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends a Swisscom prepaid sim card for a trip to Switzerland. They have the best 4G/5G network in Switzerland and have a sim card for $21 USD that gives you unlimited max speed data for 10 days. Be aware that this sim card is only valid in Switzerland, not in the rest of Europe!

The cheapest way to stay connected when traveling to Switzerland is actually an e-sim card as they already start from just $4.5 USD. You arrange everything on the internet within a couple clicks and as soon as the plane lands you are online.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Switzerland via  Airalo ,  Nomad  or SimOptions .

For a detailed guide for Switzerland e-sims check out Traveltomtom's comparison of the best e-sim cards for traveling to Switzerland in 2024 .

Keep in mind that Switzerland is NOT part of the EU, so as soon as you set foot outside of Switzerland, your Swiss prepaid sim card stops working!

Swiss prepaid sim cards and EU data roaming

HEADS UP! Switzerland is a European country however, it is NOT PART OF THE EU!

That means that prepaid sim cards that you buy in Switzerland do NOT include free EU data roaming. Meaning if you buy a sim card in Switzerland, your data allowance is only valid in Switzerland and when you cross the border into Austria, Germany, France or Italy your sim card stops working!

Basically if you want to use your Swiss sim card for traveling in Europe you have to pay an extra daily fee. Totally NOT recommended!

For more info on EU data roaming check out my guide with tips and tricks for buying a local prepaid sim card on arrival in Europe .

Prepaid sim cards from Switzerland are the worst for traveling in Europe, but good news is that you can easily buy prepaid as well as e-sim cards for Europe online and they are even much cheaper than prepaid Switzerland sim cards.

Check out Traveltomtom's  comparison of the best (e)-sim cards for traveling in Europe in 2024 . Order online and arrive prepared for your trip to Europe.

Mobile internet operators Switzerland

swisscom shop

There are three main mobile internet operators in Switzerland: Sunrise, Swisscom and Salt. All the providers have multiple phone shops in central locations in big cities in Switzerland: Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern, Lausanne. Lugano. They all sell prepaid sim cards for tourists.

Where to buy a sim card for Switzerland

International airport on arrival.

The most convenient place to buy a prepaid sim card on arrival in Switzerland is at the international airport. There are 2 main international airports in Switzerland: Geneva and Zurich.

At Geneva Airport there is a dedicated phone store and you can also buy a Swiss sim card at the currency exchange. At Geneva airport you also find sim cards from Lycamobile, Lebara and Yallo. So called MVNO's that operate on the network of the above mentioned main internet providers. Check out Traveltomtom's guide for buying a sim card at Geneva Airport in 2024  for more info.

Are you arriving at Zurich Airport then there is a small sim card shop in the duty free area opposite the luggage belts. As soon as you walk out in the arrival hall and cross the road you end up in a shopping mall where you can find a Swisscom and a Salt store that sells prepaid sim cards for tourists. For more info check out Traveltomtom's guide for buying a sim card at Zurich International Airport in 2024 .

Phone store in the city center

sunrise switzerland shop

If you missed the chance to buy a Switzerland prepaid sim card at the airport your best bid is to go to any of the official retail stores in the city center. They are in every big city or shopping mall. Just go to Google Maps and type in the by you preferred store and locate the nearest one to your hotel.

Convenience stores and gas stations

They also sell Swiss sim cards at gas stations and convenience stores, but you will have to do the activation and registration process all by yourself and there is of course no service or help from the staff. Therefore Traveltomtom does not recommend this in general for tourists.

Prepaid Swiss sim cards can only be bought in Switzerland, but as mentioned before there are multiple options of ordering a sim card for Switzerland online.

If your phone is e-sim compatible then the easiest way is ordering a Switzerland e-sim card on the internet. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Switzerland via Nomad , Airalo or SimOptions .

Traveltomtom also wrote the ultimate guide for buying an e-sim card for Switzerland in 2024  with much more details and an answer to all FAQ about using e-sims.

If your phone is not e-sim compatible you can order a physical prepaid sim card for Switzerland via SimOptions .

Registration process prepaid sim card in Switzerland

When buying a prepaid sim card in Switzerland you will need to bring your passport. A copy of your passport will be taken in the store and your new Switzerland sim card will be registered on your name and passport number. You receive a physical prepaid sim card that comes with a phone number that starts with +41.

If you want to avoid this registration process for some reason then you can order an international prepaid sim card for Switzerland or get yourself an e-sim card for Switzerland. If you order a sim card for Switzerland on the internet you only need your email address, there is not ID-verification required.

Best 4G/5G mobile network in Switzerland in 2024

Like most things in Switzerland the mobile data network is also very well organized. Basically everywhere in the country apart from very remote places in the mountains are covered with a 4G/LTE or 5G signal.

Switzerland has a very good 5G network as of 2024. Below we compare the  Switzerland network coverage maps of Sunrise, Swisscom and Salt to find the best 4G/5G network in Switzerland in 2024.

Sunrise Switzerland 4G/5G network coverage

sunrise 4g 5g network coverage map switzerland 2024

Salt Switzerland 4G/5G network coverage

salt 4g 5g network coverage map switzerland 2024

Swisscom 4G/5G network coverage

swisscom 4g 5g network coverage map switzerland 2024

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Switzerland in 2024.

What we can see from the above 4G/5G network coverage maps from the Swiss mobile internet operators is that every tourist destination in Switzerland is covered with an excellent 4G/LTE and even a 5G signal.

Traveltomtom comes to the conclusion that Swisscom has the best 4G/5G network in Switzerland in 2024 with Sunrise being a good runner up and Salt has the smallest 4G/5G network in Switzerland.

Prices prepaid Switzerland sim cards in 2024

Based on the network coverage it doesn’t really matter which prepaid Switzerland sim card you buy as all tourist destinations are covered with a good phone signal by Salt, Sunrise and Swisscom. Let’s have a look at the prices and the prepaid data packages and plans that the Swiss mobile internet operators offer.

Prices and info below are updated in April 2024 and prices are in CHF: 1 USD = 0.90 CHF and 1 CHF = $1.11 USD.

Swisscom prepaid sim card

swisscom prepaid sim card

A Swisscom prepaid sim card cost 19.9 CHF and comes with 20 CHF credit. A data connection cost 2 CHF per day, calling is 29c per minute and sms is 15c per text. Data is only valid in Swiss, not in other countries in the EU!

Data roaming in nearby France cost for example 5 CHF per day. These were the prices in 2020 and they did NOT change in 2024! Very Swiss.

swisscom prepaid sim card plans 2024

Swissom also offers the above prepaid sim card data plan, but they are useless compared to unlimited data for 2 CHF per day.

  • 500 MB data for 30 days = 6.90 CHF
  • 2 GB data for 30 days = 19.90 CHF
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = 45 CHF

Roaming charges outside of Switzerland apply on all prepaid data plans. There is no EU roaming included. For more info see the Swisscom website .

Salt Switzerland prepaid sim card

salt switzerland prepaid sim card plans 2024

You can get a FREE Salt Mobile sim card, but you can only start using it when you top up with one of their many prepaid data/voice plans.

Salt offers free EU data roaming on some of their prepaid sim card plans, which are all valid for 1 month.

  • unlimited data on 4G network + unlimited calls/sms - only valid in Switzerland = 59.95 CHF
  • unlimited data on 4G network in all of Europe + unlimited calls/sms in Switzerland = 89.95 CHF
  • unlimited data in Switzerland on 4G = 35 CHF
  • 5 GB data in Switzerland on 5G + unlimited calls/sms in Switzerland = 39.95 CHF

You are allowed to use a hotspot regarding the fair-use policy. For more detailed info see the Salt Mobile website .

Sunrise Switzerland prepaid sim card

sunrise switzerland prepaid sim card plans 2024

Just like Swisscom a Sunrise prepaid sim card for Switzerland also cost 19.90 CHF and comes with 20 CHF credit.

Sunrise offers unlimited data + chat per day in Switzerland for 2.5 CHF per 24 hours. There is no limit, but data is only available in Switzerland.

EU data roaming charges are expensive! These are the set fares as per April 2024. More info on the Sunrise website .

Best sim card for Switzerland in 2024

Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries in the world. However, prepaid sim card plans are not too bad and for 20 CHF ($21 USD) you basically get 10 days unlimited high speed data in Switzerland.

The main issue with Switzerland prepaid sim cards is that they are only valid in Switzerland and NOT in the rest of Europe. If you only visit Switzerland on your trip to Europe then never mind, otherwise it is worth checking the my comparison of the best Europe travel (e)-sim cards with data in 2024 .

When you are traveling to Switzerland for a week I recommend you getting a prepaid sim card from Swisscom as they offer unlimited data 2 CHF for per day at the fastest mobile network in Switzerland. Therefore Swisscom is the best prepaid sim card in Switzerland in 2024.

From my comparison of the prepaid Switzerland sim cards I came to the following conclusions:

  • Swisscom has the best 4G/5G network in Switzerland in 2024
  • all tourist destinations in Switzerland are covered with a good 4G/5G signal by all mobile internet providers
  • Salt and Swisscom offer unlimited high speed data per day
  • All data allowance is ONLY valid in Switzerland, EU data roaming with Swiss prepaid sim cards is at extra costs

If 20 CHF ($21 USD) sounds like too much money to stay connected in Switzerland then check out the Airalo e-sim cards for Switzerland that already start from just $4.5 USD.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Switzerland via   Airalo Nomad  or SimOptions .

E-sim cards in general are very much recommended as you arrange everything online and you don't need to go to a phone store in Switzerland and buy a local prepaid sim card. Nomad has an e-sim card plan for Switzerland with 20 GB data for $33 USD.

And if you are a heavy data user just like me then have a look at the following e-sim.

Best SIM Cards In Switzerland For Tourists

switzerland tourist sim card

When you first land in Switzerland as a tourist, you will want to get access to Swiss mobile data as soon as possible.

Sure, there is wifi in your hotel or Airbnb, and maybe even in the cafe, but if you want to be able to surf on the go, you need mobile data. That means you need a Swiss SIM Card.

Switzerland has three main providers: Swisscom, Sunrise, and Salt . And below I have collected all of the relevant information on their Prepaid SIM cards for Switzerland.

The best option for visitors or tourists though is to get your 4G data sorted out before you leave home!

Table of Contents

Have 4G Data As Soon As You Land In Switzerland

Maybe you want a SIM card before you leave to save on the hassle and ensure you have access to 4G as soon as you land.

There are two ways you can do that.

  • Buy a SIM card online and have it sent to you before you leave
  • Buy an eSIM card online and activate it on your phone (no physical sim card required!)

Data As Soon As You Arrive

Don’t waste time or money on SIM cards. Get an eSIM delivered electronically and save money at the same time.

Buy A eSIM Card for Switzerland

I prefer option 2 and I use eSIM cards all the time when I travel :> And actually have a whole post on eSims for Switzerland

Esims have a lot of positives:

  • They are easy to activate (via a QR code)
  • They run in parallel to your standard SIM (you get to keep your number) and use another eSIM in your phone. It’s great!

switzerland tourist sim card

There are lots of eSIM options for Switzerland, but my favorite hands down is Airalo . They have lots of data options for Switzerland and Europe in general, and their service is top-notch. (You can read a full review on Airalo )

You can get mobile data for as little as around $2 per GB and it is on the Sunrise network, one of Switzerland’s best mobile providers.

Buying A Swiss SIM Card Before You Travel

There are some great online providers that will send you a SIM for Switzerland before you leave home.

Here are some of the companies you can check out if that is the option you prefer:

Best Swiss Prepaid SIM Card Options

Swisscom shop

Swisscom Prepaid SIM Cards

Swisscom is the original telephone company in Switzerland, so they have the best network (more on that below). In my experience, you will find you get mobile reception almost anywhere you go in the country, even on hikes in the Alps.

So, they are probably one of the best options when it comes to getting a Switzerland SIM card if you want to always have 4G available.

When I asked the Swisscom attendant, he said the following are the options they have for prepaid SIM cards for Switzerland. It comes down to pay-per-use vs payment for unlimited everything for a specific timeframe.

Swisscom inOne Prepaid

inOne mobile prepaid SIM Card

  • Basic – Calls 0.29/min, SMS 0.15/SMS, Internet 2.−/day
  • go (5 CHF / 30 Days) – Calls 0.29/min, Unlimited SMS, Unlimited data with 128 kbit/s

Swisscom Flatrate Prepaid SIMs

Prepaid Flatrate (Unlimited Calls, Unlimited SMS, Unlimited data)

  • 7 days for 20 CHF
  • 30 days for 65 CHF
  • 90 days for 150 CHF

You can also maintain your data or add additional options via your Swisscom Cockpit . It’s way easier this way. I have done it before with many other mobile providers. You can do it from the web on your phone or laptop.

Or, if you just want to quickly add credit online, you can head to this page .

Best switzerland esims compared (for your next visit), sunrise prepaid sim cards.

Sunrise also has some worthwhile prepaid SIM card options you can check out. They have a one-time fee of 19.90 CHF or the SIM card, but keep in mind that includes 20 CHF credit, so in essence, it is free.

The two main options they have are a daily payment of CHF 2.5, or a per-use payment. They also have a Europe-wide data-only option too. Once you have a Sunrise card you also get access to free mobile data on SBB trains too.

Sunrise Prepaid SIM options

Prepaid Unlimited

  • 24 hours of Unlimited data, calls, SMS – 2.5 CHF

Prepaid Airbag

  • Data – 1.20 CHF a day for 100 MB of 4G
  • SMS – 0.20 CHF per SMS
  • Calls – 0.30 CHF/min (max 0.60)

Unlimited Europe

  • 40 GB data in Europe – CHF 49.90 30 days

Salt Prepaid SIM Card

Salt is a newer provider in Switzerland, so its network is not as good as Sunrise’s or Swisscom’s. However, it is still pretty good and it will cover you in most major destinations. Just not in more remote areas.

According to the shop attendant, the Prepaid SIM card from Salt is quite simple. You get a Prepaid sim card for FREE with 10 CHF credit included. After that, you have to top it up with credit.

Their rates are as follows:

  • Calls: 0.49/call (60 min max.)
  • SMS: 0.12/SMS
  • Unlimited data: 1.99 CHF/day
  • 100 MB for CHF 3
  • 500 MB for CHF 9
  • 1 GB for CHF 15

You can only use the data in Switzerland, like with all the other prepaid SIM cards from the competitors.

Buying A SIM Card at the Zurich Airport Or In A City

switzerland tourist sim card

When you land at Zurich Airport there are a whole bunch of shops as you exit the terminal and head towards public transport in the main building. Inside that building are quite a few places to get a SIM card, including all three major mobile network operators, and a mobile phone shop:

You can also find the same stores in most major towns and cities in Switzerland. That way, you can get firsthand advice on which SIM card is best for your situation and also get help with the activation process.

My Recommendation For Mobile Data

I travel a lot and am probably writing this while on the road. When I am abroad I use eSims 95% of the time instead of going through the hassle of getting a local SIM Card. That is the same for Switzerland (if I did not live there that is :>)

Instead of going through the hassle of getting a local sim, losing your number, having to register, etc., why not just get an electronic SIM (eSim) which is a code essentially you load into your phone? All newer phones (iPhone X or later – so 5 years or so for most manufacturers) have it built in.

You just buy an eSim when you land, on the plane, or before you leave, and activate it when you arrive. It takes a minute or two. And you have data ready to go!

Here is my complete review of all eSim options in Switzerland !

It is very strange offer. On Monday, July 17th, 2023 at about 18:15, I went to Swisscom boutique at Geneve Cornavin railway station. I asked for this offer and they have refused to sell it to me as they required passport and they insisted that ID card is not enough. But most of the Europeans do not travel with passports across Europe because crossing borders and embarking planes or ships with ID card is accepted everywhere with few exceptions. So, this offer is for whom?

And what did you do next? Did you buy any sim card somewhere? Because i am travelling to Switzerland and I want to buy sim card

From my experience, eSIMs are a way better option – no lines, no shop visits, better deals, no id checks. check out my post on that https://switzerlanding.com/best-esims-mobile-data/

Best Tourist Sim Cards in Switzerland in 2024

switzerland tourist sim card

If you plan on visiting Switzerland, having a reliable internet connection is essential for navigating new cities and making your travel experience more convenient. From finding the best restaurants and directions to your accommodation, to booking a taxi and sharing photos with your family, staying connected on the go is crucial.

While roaming is always an option, the international fees can quickly become expensive. That’s why we recommend either getting an eSIM or a local SIM card in Switzerland to access affordable local phone rates.

Luckily, obtaining either option is incredibly easy in Switzerland, but it’s important to know which one suits your needs best. This comprehensive guide will provide you with all the information you need to know about purchasing a SIM card in Switzerland, including updated pricing and recommendations for the best SIM card to buy.

Table of Contents

Best sim card in switzerland for tourists.

The best sim card in Switzerland is the Switzerland eSim offered by Airalo . The Airalo eSim uses the excellent Sunrise network (with coverage pretty much everywhere in Switzerland) and is priced considerably cheaper. For just 13 CHF you can get 5GB of data valid for a month, plus there are options for additional data that works out cheaper than the 3 CHF daily price of Sunrise and the 2 CHF daily price of Salt.

There is one situation where I would recommend a local sim card in Switzerland over an eSim is if you require unlimited data. For most travellers, 5GB or 10GB with Airalo will be more than enough, but if you know you are likely to use a huge amount of mobile data then you would be better off with a Salt prepaid daily sim card.

Switzerland Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Switzerland costs between 13 CHF and 20 CHF in April 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Switzerland will cost between $4.50 USD and $38 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Switzerland which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $14.50 USD.

Switzerland Sim Card Providers

In Switzerland, there are three main SIM card providers that dominate the market: Sunrise, Salt, and Swisscom.

Sunrise is a leading telecommunications company offering a wide range of mobile services, including prepaid and postpaid SIM cards. They are known for their strong network coverage and competitive prices, making them a popular choice among consumers.

Salt is another prominent provider, renowned for its affordable SIM card plans and innovative offerings. They cater to diverse customer needs, providing flexible options for data, voice, and messaging services.

Swisscom, the largest telecommunications company in Switzerland, offers premium SIM card packages with top-notch network quality. They pride themselves on reliability, high-speed connectivity, and comprehensive coverage across the country.

How to Get a Sim Card in Switzerland

Identify mobile providers: Sunrise, Salt and Swisscom are your best options in Switzerland.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Switzerland

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Switzerland at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Switzerland then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Switzerland have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Sunrise, Salt and Swisscom. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Switzerland are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Switzerland with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

Switzerland eSim

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Switzerland. The Airalo Switzerland eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $14.50 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Switzerland without having to venture outside.

Airalo Switzerland

Our preferred eSim provider in Switzerland is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Switzerland and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Switzerland eSim uses the Sunrise network to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Sunrise networknetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Switzerland.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Switzerland eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $4.50 USD 2GB data valid for 15 days – Price: $8 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $10 USD 5GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $14.50 USD 10GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $24 USD 20GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $38 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 5GB data plan for $14.50 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Switzerland

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Switzerland eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Switzerland eSim uses the Swisscom/Sunrise/Saltnetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Switzerland

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s Switzerland eSim:

Unlimited data valid for 5 days – Price: $19 USD Unlimited data valid for 7 days – Price: $27 USD Unlimited data valid for 10 days – Price: $34 USD Unlimited data valid for 15 days – Price: $47 USD Unlimited data valid for 20 days – Price: $54 USD Unlimited data valid for 30 days – Price: $64 USD Unlimited data valid for 60 days – Price: $84 USD Unlimited data valid for 90 days – Price: $99 USD

What is an eSim?

An eSIM, also known as an embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card that is permanently installed in a device, like a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. Unlike traditional SIM cards that need to be physically inserted or removed, an eSIM is built directly into the device.

The eSIM is integrated into the device’s hardware and can be remotely activated and programmed by a mobile network operator. This means that users can easily switch between different mobile networks or plans without the need for physical SIM card swaps.

The convenience, flexibility, and user-friendliness of eSIM technology are particularly beneficial for travelers or those who frequently switch between mobile networks or travel internationally. It eliminates the need to buy and insert physical SIM cards, making it much more convenient to manage multiple mobile connections on a single device.

To activate an eSIM, users simply need to scan a QR code provided by their mobile network operator or manually enter the activation details. Once activated, the device can connect to the chosen mobile network and enjoy voice, data, and messaging services, just like with a regular SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

There are several advantages to using an eSIM:

– Convenience: No need to physically insert or remove a SIM card when switching networks or plans. Great for frequent travelers who need to change networks or use local SIM cards in different countries.

– Dual SIM functionality: Can have two active mobile numbers on one device. Useful for separating personal and work numbers or managing multiple phone lines.

– Space-saving: No physical SIM card slot required, freeing up space in the device. Allows for smaller devices or use of the extra space for other components.

– Remote provisioning: Activation and management of mobile plans can be done remotely. No need for a physical SIM card or store visit. Offers flexibility and convenience for managing mobile connectivity.

– Future-proofing: more mobile networks and service providers are offering support for eSIMs. By using an eSIM-compatible device, you can take advantage of new offerings as they become available.

Overall, eSIM technology provides flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity, making it a compelling choice for many users.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

Switzerland SIM Cards: Everything You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Dec 3, 2023 | Europe , SIM Cards , Switzerland , Travel Tips

Visiting Switzerland soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Switzerland SIM card .

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Switzerland in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

Please be aware that Switzerland is not part of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA); therefore, free EU roaming is not always available here.

This could mean that if you have a SIM card from a different European country, you might be charged high fees for roaming. Therefore, it is best to ensure you buy a local SIM or check your coverage beforehand.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Switzerland. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call an Uber, or translate German or French – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Switzerland.

Zermatt

Best SIM Cards In Switzerland

If you’re traveling in Switzerland, we recommend using a SIM card from Sunrise, Salt, Swisscom, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Europe, you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other European countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Switzerland

You can either buy a Europe prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival.

So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase a European prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Sunrise, Salt, and Swisscom.

Switzerland

Sunrise SIM Cards

Sunrise offers three different types of plans:

  • Prepaid unlimited: Unlimited Data for CHF 2.50 ($2.50)
  • Prepaid airbag: 100 MB Data for CHF 1.20 ($1.20) Includes 30 mins of calls
  • Prepaid young (for teenagers): 100 MB Data for CHF 0.75 ($0.75) Includes 25 mins of calls

These prices are all paid per 24-hour period. There is a one-time SIM activation fee of CHF 19.90 ($19.92), which includes CHF 20 ($19.99) free credit.

Salt SIM Cards

Salt has one prepaid plan available:

  • Unlimited Data CHF 1.99 ($1.99) / day
  • National calls CHF 0.49 ($0.49)
  • National SMS CHF 0.12 ($0.12)

Sim cards with Salt are free. However, you need to top up with credit before you can use them.

Swisscom SIM Cards

Swisscom offers three prepaid flat-rate SIM plans:

  • Flatrate 7 days: CHF 20 ($19.99) for unlimited data, calls & SMS
  • Flatrate 30 days: CHF 65 ($64.98) for unlimited data, calls & SMS
  • Flatrate 90 days: CHF 150 ($149.96) for unlimited data, calls & SMS

A Swisscom sim card will cost you CHF 19.90 ($19.92) to buy and will come with CHF 20 ($19.99) credit.

Overall, we think Salt is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A Switzerland Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM Card works in more than 30 countries and gives you 20BG of data for 14 days. Switzerland is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and ensure the countries you plan to visit are listed.

Browse your options on Amazon

Another option is to purchase a prepaid European SIM card on SimOptions .

They currently offer various data plans in Switzerland.

Browse your options on SimOptions

Finally, the last option is to buy an eSIM card for Europe.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For Switzerland

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone. If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s definitely one of the best options to get data in Switzerland.

Curious? Learn more about eSIM for travelers .

I started using eSIM as soon as my mobile phone supported it. To buy eSIMs, I usually use Airalo .

Keep reading to learn more about the best eSIMs in Switzerland.

Airalo Switzerland

If you want to buy an eSIM for Switzerland, you could purchase one on Airalo .

This website offers many eSIM cards worldwide and special plans for Europe and Switzerland.

I’ve been using Airalo in Europe for several months, and it works fine.

Here are the options available for Switzerland only :

  • Pilatus Mobile: 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $4.50
  • Pilatus Mobile: 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $8
  • Pilatus Mobile: 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $10
  • Pilatus Mobile: 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $14.50
  • Pilatus Mobile: 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $24
  • Pilatus Mobile: 20 GB, valid for 30 days for $38

Switzerland Airalo esim

Here’s an overview of the options available in Europe :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $5
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $13
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $20
  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $37
  • 50 GB, valid for 90 days for $100
  • 100 GB, valid for 180 days for $185

The options mentioned above are part of Eurolink and offer coverage in 39 countries, including Switzerland.

Alternatively, if you’re traveling in other countries that are not mentioned on the list, you can try Discover Global, which offers coverage in 84 countries, including Switzerland.

Here’s an overview of the options available on Discover Global :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $9
  • 3 GB, valid for 15 days for $24
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $35
  • 10 GB, valid for 60 days for $59
  • 20 GB, valid for 180 days for $89

Now, one important thing to note about Airalo is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the provider in each country.

Suppose you ever have trouble connecting to the Internet during your trip. In that case, it might be because you’re connecting automatically to networks and need to select a network manually instead.

When you purchase the eSIM, you’ll get access to the list of networks supported in each country.

Go to Airalo

Holafly Switzerland

Alternatively, you could look at your options on Holafly . You can read our Holafly review to learn more about this eSIM store.

I’ve also tried this eSIM provider in Europe, and it worked fine.

Their Europe eSIM work in 32 countries (including Switzerland), and they offer the following plans:

  • Unlimited data for 5 days for $19
  • Unlimited data for 7 days for $27
  • Unlimited data for 10 days for $34
  • Unlimited data for 15 days for $47
  • Unlimited data for 20 days for $54
  • Unlimited data for 30 days for $64
  • Unlimited data for 60 days for $84
  • Unlimited data for 90 days for $99

Go to Holafly

Nomad Switzerland

Finally, Nomad is also a great eSIM provider. Here’s an overview of the plans available for Switzerland:

  • 1GB, valid for 7 days for $8
  • 3GB, valid for 30 days for $15
  • 5GB, valid for 30 days for $17
  • 10GB, valid for 30 days for $24
  • 20GB, valid for 30 days for $34

Go to Nomad

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards Switzerland

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Switzerland or even an eSIM for your travels in Switzerland is pretty straightforward.

But please remember, European roaming charges apply if you use your Swiss SIM card in other EU countries and vice versa.

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Switzerland if you wish to have data upon your arrival. This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card.

Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Staying Connected in Switzerland: A Guide to Tourist SIM Cards

From capturing the stunning vistas of the Swiss Alps to navigating through the medieval streets of Bern, having a reliable and affordable internet connection in Switzerland can enhance your travel experience immensely. But which SIM card should you opt for? To make the process a little less confusing, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to choosing the best tourist SIM card for your Swiss adventure.

Table of Contents

Why Buy a Local SIM Card?

You might wonder why you should get a local Swiss SIM card when your current provider may offer roaming. Well, roaming charges can quickly add up and cost much more than a local SIM. With a local SIM card, you’ll get access to better rates and faster data, ensuring you stay connected without breaking the bank.

Where to Buy a SIM Card?

SIM cards are readily available throughout Switzerland. You can purchase them at any Swisscom, Salt, or Sunrise store, all of which are popular mobile network providers. Additionally, SIM cards are sold at supermarkets like Coop and Migros, kiosks, post offices, and even vending machines at international airports.

Choosing the Right SIM Card

When choosing a SIM card, consider how long you’ll be staying and how much data you think you’ll need. Here are some options:

1. Swisscom: Known for its robust network, Swisscom offers the “inOne mobile prepaid” SIM card. It provides a flat rate for calls, SMS, and data within Switzerland and includes 20 CHF credit. You can then add various data packages based on your need.

2. Salt: Offering the “PrePay” SIM, Salt is another reliable option. The SIM card includes unlimited calls and texts in Switzerland and 1GB of data. Additional data packages can be purchased if needed.

3. Sunrise: With the “Prepaid Unlimited” SIM card, Sunrise offers unlimited calls, texts, and 1GB of data for 30 days. The SIM card itself is free, but you’ll need to top it up with at least 20 CHF.

Activating Your SIM Card

Once you’ve purchased a SIM card, you’ll need to activate it. For most providers, the activation process is relatively straightforward – you insert the SIM into your phone, dial a number, and follow the prompts. Remember, you’ll need a phone that’s unlocked for the SIM to work.

Staying Connected in Switzerland

In Switzerland, 4G coverage is impressive, even in the mountainous regions, ensuring that you’re connected in most places. Wi-Fi is also readily available in hotels, cafes, and public spaces, but a local SIM card will ensure uninterrupted connectivity.

In Conclusion

Whether you’re planning to hike the Alps, explore charming Swiss towns, or enjoy Swiss gastronomy, staying connected will make your experience smoother and more enjoyable. By securing a local SIM card, you can navigate, translate, and share your Swiss journey with ease and affordability.

As always, we recommend that you check the most up-to-date information from the provider’s official website as prices and packages may vary.

In a Mobilezone Branch

Mobilezone, a popular electronics retailer in Switzerland, also provides top-up services for prepaid SIM cards at their branches.

At SBB Ticket Machines

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) ticket machines offer the convenience of topping up your prepaid SIM card balance while waiting for your train.

Some ATMs let you load prepaid SIM cards from your bank account, making it a smooth and easy process.

Remember to check for special offers like “free credit” or “free WiFi” when you top up, as some mobile operators may provide additional benefits along with the recharge. Additionally, consider data packages or “unlimited internet” options that suit your needs, and keep an eye out for “data allowances” that offer extra data benefits.

Top Up SIM Card for Travelers

For travelers, “EU roaming Switzerland” options can provide seamless connectivity across European countries. If you prefer a digital experience, some operators may offer “eSIM card” options, allowing you to activate your prepaid SIM online without the need for a physical card.

When traveling, having access to “Google Maps” and “data bundles” is invaluable, making it easy to navigate and stay connected while exploring Switzerland.

Keep in mind that some top-ups may have an “activation fee,” so it’s essential to check the terms and conditions before recharging. With the variety of top-up options available, you can find the best prepaid SIM card solution that meets your communication needs in Switzerland.

What Do You Need To Know About Switzerland SIM Card?

When it comes to a Switzerland SIM card, it’s essential to understand that not all SIM cards are the same. Each SIM card may offer different features and benefits, catering to specific user needs. Here are some key points to consider:

1. eSIM Card: Some providers offer eSIM cards, allowing you to activate your SIM card digitally without the need for a physical card. This can be especially convenient for travelers or users who prefer a seamless activation process.

2. Coverage and Networks: Different SIM cards may be connected to different networks. For instance, Swisscom and Sunrise are two major network operators in Switzerland. Consider choosing a SIM card that offers reliable coverage on the network that suits your location and travel plans.

3. Data Bundles and Plans: Look for data bundles or prepaid plans that match your data usage requirements. Having access to data is crucial for using navigation apps like “Google Maps” and staying connected online.

4. Activation Fee: Some SIM cards may have an activation fee when you first purchase or top up the card. Be sure to check if there are any fees associated with activating the SIM.

5. Stay Connected in Other Countries: If you plan to travel to other countries from Switzerland, consider SIM cards that offer roaming options or international plans to ensure you can stay connected while abroad.

6. Prepaid vs. Postpaid: Decide whether a prepaid or postpaid plan suits your needs better. Prepaid plans offer more control over spending, while postpaid plans typically involve monthly bills.

7. Convenience Stores and Train Stations: Many SIM cards can be purchased at convenience stores, kiosks, and even train stations, making it easy to get a SIM card quickly upon arrival in Switzerland.

Cheapest prepaid SIM card

If you only need an internet prepaid surf package from Salt is the cheapest on the Swiss market. You get 5 GB of data for just 9,95 CHF per month.

Salt surf – 9,95 CHF per month

  • Data: 5 GB with maximal speed
  • Only internet

In addition to the above-mentioned SIM cards, you can also find one on the Swiss online comparison tool . They offer a pretty thorough overview.

Best SIM card for Surfing The Internet

Swisscom and Sunrise networks have the fastest speeds and the most comprehensive 5G coverage for mobile data. However, if you are looking for the best SIM card provider, Airalo is the winner.

They run on the Sunrise network and cost a fraction of what you will pay for a SIM card sold directly from Sunrise company.

Sunrise network showed the fastest mobile data upload speeds in smaller Swiss cities. Generally, the Salt network is a bit behind but still offers great internet speed.

Swisscom provides an average download speed of 94.2 MBit/s, making it the fastest mobile network. Sunrise has an average internet speed of 76.5 MBit/s. Lastly, Salt shows an average speed of 53 MBit/s. The results of the upload tests should show a similar ratio.

Overall, mobile data speed isn’t something you need to worry about when it comes to the internet in Switzerland. The price, on the other hand, is something to consider. The best price-value ration SIM card for the internet is one from Airalo.

  • Data: 3 GB with maximal speed
  • Price: 18 CHF
  • Valid: 30 days

SIM card in Switzerland for Tourists

What SIM card is the best for visitors in Switzerland? As a tourist, you especially need a flexible plan, billed preferably daily or weekly.

As a tourist, the best SIM card deal is either an eSIM from Airalo or inOne mobile prepaid basic from Swisscom . Airalo costs 9 CHF and gives you 1 GB of data, and Swisscom goes for 19,90 CHF, but 20 CHF will be deposited as a credit.

With Swisscom, you pay 2 CHF per day for unlimited internet. It’s a great option if you stay only a few days in Switzerland; you pay only for each day and not per month as with many other mobile plans. So if you plan to stay for 10 days, it will only cost you 19,90 CHF.

In addition, you can check out this comparison site . Just enter your preferences on the left.

Generally, when traveling to Switzerland, you 100% will need to get a local SIM card. Switzerland is outside the EU & Schengen and doesn’t provide roaming free internet like most other European countries .

Besides, roaming on mobile the internet is painfully expensive if you decide to use a foreign SIM in Switzerland.

However, if you want to use a Swiss SIM in Europe, it’s not a good option. Internet data included in Swiss mobile plans can be used only within Switzerland. Consequently, you will pay high roaming fees in other countries.

Where to buy a SIM card in Switzerland?

In Switzerland, tourists and locals have a wide array of options for purchasing a prepaid SIM card to stay connected. Here are some popular places where you can buy a SIM card:

Many major airports in Switzerland have kiosks or stores where you can find prepaid SIM cards upon your arrival.

Supermarkets

Large supermarkets like Migros and Coop often have sections dedicated to electronics, including prepaid SIM cards.

Shopping Malls

You can find telecom shops or electronic retailers within shopping malls offering a variety of prepaid SIM card options.

Discounters

Another key point is discount stores like Aldi and Lidl may also have prepaid SIM cards available for purchase.

Gas Stations

Some gas stations conveniently offer prepaid SIM cards along with other essentials.

Convenience Stores

Convenience stores are scattered throughout Swiss cities, providing easy access to prepaid SIM cards.

Telecom Shops

Visit the official telecom shops of network providers like Swisscom, Sunrise, Salt, and Mobilezone to explore their range of prepaid plans and SIM cards.

Electronics Stores

Large electronics retailers like MediaMarkt, Interdiscount, and Melectronics typically offer prepaid SIM cards alongside electronic gadgets.

Post Offices

Swiss Post offices are reliable places to find prepaid SIM cards, often located in various areas across the country.

When purchasing a prepaid SIM card, consider if it is a “Switzerland prepaid” card that suits your specific communication needs. Look for the “best SIM card” for your usage requirements, including data bundles and plans that offer enough data to “stay connected” and use services like Google Maps.

Check if the SIM card includes “roaming charges” or if it allows roaming in other European countries, ensuring seamless communication even when traveling. Moreover, inquire about the “activation process” to make sure it is straightforward and hassle-free.

Whether you choose to buy from supermarkets, electronics stores, or even “grocery stores,” you’ll find various options to get a prepaid SIM card that works on networks like “Swisscom” or the “Sunrise network” and offers the flexibility of a “prepaid plan.”

By selecting the right SIM card, you can enjoy your stay in Switzerland while staying connected with ease.

Can you order the prepaid SIM card online?

It’s also possible to buy a SIM card online. In that case, a provider will send a SIM card by post – but for this, you need an address in Switzerland. Without a Swiss address, you can purchase it online.

In some cases, ordering a SIM to your hotel or Airbnb can be a viable option.

What To Avoid When Choosing Switzerland Prepaid SIM Card?

Limited mobile data.

Avoid prepaid SIM cards with insufficient data allowances, as it may restrict your internet usage and lead to unexpected additional charges when you run out of data. Ensure you have enough data to comfortably browse the web, use social media, and access online services during your stay in Switzerland.

Overpriced Prepaid SIM Card

Watch out for prepaid SIM cards with high upfront costs, as some providers may offer cheaper alternatives with similar benefits, saving you money. Compare prices and features among different providers to get the best value for your prepaid SIM card.

Incompatibility with Device

Double-check that the prepaid SIM card you purchase is compatible with your device, especially if it requires a “physical SIM card,” to avoid any compatibility issues. Ensure your device supports the required SIM card size (standard, micro, or nano) and that it is unlocked to use with other carriers.

Limited Roaming Options

If you plan to travel to other European countries, avoid prepaid SIM cards with limited or expensive roaming options to stay connected without excessive charges. Rather, look for prepaid SIM cards that offer affordable or free roaming within the European Union for seamless connectivity during your travels.

No eSIM Option

If you prefer the convenience of an eSIM, ensure that the prepaid SIM card offers an “eSIM for Switzerland” option, making activation and management easier. An eSIM allows you to activate your SIM card digitally, eliminating the need for a physical card and simplifying the process.

Insufficient Data for Hotspot Use

If you need to use your device as a “mobile hotspot,” avoid prepaid SIM cards with limited data allowances that may quickly deplete, hindering your connectivity. Choose a prepaid SIM card with sufficient data for hotspot use to ensure you can share your internet connection with other devices.

Not Researching Mobile Operators

Compare offerings from different “mobile operators” like Swisscom and Sunrise to find the best prepaid SIM card for your needs, ensuring you get the most suitable plan. So always consider factors such as coverage, data allowances, customer service, and network reliability when making your decision.

Tourist SIM Card Scams

Generally, be cautious of tourist SIM cards sold at inflated prices at tourist hotspots like Zurich Airport; they may not offer the best value compared to other options. Look for prepaid SIM cards offered by reputable providers to ensure you are getting fair pricing and reliable services.

Reliance on Free Wi-Fi

Avoid relying solely on free Wi-Fi connections, as they may not always be secure or reliable compared to having a prepaid SIM card with “unlimited internet” and a suitable “data plan” that ensures constant connectivity. Basically, having your own data plan allows you to stay connected at all times, even in areas without free Wi-Fi.

Not Checking Coverage

Ensure the prepaid SIM card you choose has good coverage across Switzerland, especially if you plan to travel to remote areas, to avoid potential connectivity issues. Check coverage maps or inquire with the provider about their network reach to ensure you have a reliable connection wherever you go in Switzerland.

The best esim data plans for switzerland | prepaid data plan buyer’s guide.

Your guide to buying eSIM mobile data plans in Switzerland.

phones and technology

switzerland tourist sim card

Before traveling to Switzerland I suggest buying a Swiss eSIM mobile data plan so you don’t find yourself without reliable data during your trip. To help make things easier, I’ve created this buyer’s guide for the best eSIM data plans for Switzerland—including how to buy an eSIM for Switzerland and what quirks you might experience when buying a Swiss eSIM data plan.

Important Info About eSIM Plans in Switzerland

Before we get started, I want to cover a few quirks about getting mobile data in Switzerland—especially as a visitor. If you want to learn more about eSIM data plans in general then check out my  Guide To Using eSIM Data Plans in Europe .

Your eSIM Might Not Work Outside Of Switzerland

As of 2017, the EU passed a “roam like home” policy that bans mobile carriers from charging mobile roaming fees for any EU member country. In short, any eSIM data plan bought in the EU can be used in any other EU country without extra fees or restrictions. This is great for travelers because you can use one plan everywhere.

However, Switzerland isn’t part of the EU . Many eSIM plans still include Switzerland in their coverage area (notably   Orange Holiday Europe eSIM  and  Holafly eSIM ) but they’re not legally required to do this—so read the fine print before buying.

Not Many Swiss Mobile Companies Offer Prepaid eSIM Plans

Most Swiss mobile carriers only offer eSIM plans to local customers with yearly contracts so buying a plan once you’re in Switzerland isn’t ideal. Many Swiss companies also charge a one-time activation fee so this also makes buying a local eSIM expensive for short-term visitors.

How Much Mobile Data Do You Need?

As long as you’re not streaming music/videos or uploading a ton of photos, you probably won’t use more than 3GB-6GB of mobile data a week. In fact, the average American smartphone owner uses around  15GB  of mobile data each month.

If you’re spending a lot of time on social media (notably Instagram and TikTok) then you might use a bit more but if you’re just doing normal web browsing and using Google Maps then you might only use 2-4GB a week.

Your Phone Must Be “Unlocked”

Some mobile companies (notably in the US, Australia, and New Zealand) “lock” their phones so they’ll only work on that carrier’s network—this usually only applies if you have a plan that includes a free phone with a multi-year contract. You’ll need to contact your carrier and have them “unlock” your phone so it will accept a third-party eSIM.

In the US, carriers are required to unlock phones if the customer requests it but it’s often not unlocked by default. That said, a few carriers still make customers jump through hoops to unlock their phones so don’t put this off until the last minute.

THE BEST eSIM FOR SWITZERLAND: QUICK GUIDE

In a rush? Let’s jump straight into my Swiss eSIM recommendations:

The best full-featured eSIM that can be used in Switzerland and the rest of Europe is the  Orange Holiday Europe eSIM . The Holafly Switzerland eSIM is a great data-only option.

The Best Prepaid eSIM Plans For Switzerland

For 99% of travelers, the best option for getting high-speed data in Switzerland is a prepaid eSIM. These plans are geared toward short-term visitors so the setup process is typically pretty easy.

I’ve listed multiple eSIM options below but each carries slightly in what they offer. Here are the main things to consider:

  • NOTE: Apple users can still send iMessage with their current phone number to other Apple users with a data-only plan—you won’t be charged anything extra by your current carrier.
  • Data Allowance: Each eSIM plan comes with a set data allowance so you’ll have to decide how much you think you’ll use during your trip. I’ve also listed unlimited data options below.
  • eSIM Validity Period: Your eSIM plan will typically be valid from 14-30 days from the first day you activate your service so match this up to your trip length (or you can buy multiple eSIMs).
  • Data Tethering: Not all eSIM plans allow you to turn your phone into a mobile hotspot.

Orange Holiday Europe eSIM (50GB) for Switzerland

switzerland tourist sim card

  • Price:  $59.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  50GB
  • Service Speed:  4G/LTE
  • Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 120 min outside of Europe.
  • Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 1000 outside of Europe.
  • Credit validity:  28 day
  • Data Tethering:  Allowed
  • Usable on any device (phones, tablets, hotspots…)
  • This eSIM plan comes with a French phone number that can still be used anywhere in Europe
  • Service works everywhere in the EU

If you need a ton of mobile data, consider the newly released  Orange Holiday Europe 50GB eSIM data plan  which is a beefed-up version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM. It has 50GB of data and it’s valid for 28 days (compared to 14 days with the Orange Holiday Europe plan). This eSIM also comes with many features you don’t find with other plans—including international voice calling and texts (it gives you an actual French phone number that works anywhere in Europe).

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot so you can put that extra data allowance to good use. Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

ORANGE HOLIDAY EUROPE ESIM For Switzerland

switzerland tourist sim card

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM is one of the most robust eSIM plans for Switzerland—it also works for every EU country so it’s great for multi-country trips.

I like how Orange Holiday Europe is one of the few eSIM plans that comes with voice minutes and texts (most eSIM plans are data-only). This Orange Holiday Europe eSIM also allows data tethering so you can use your phone as a mobile hotspot for your laptop/tablet.

As an added bonus, the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM doesn’t require registration unless you use it longer than 14 days.

  • Price:  $49.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  30GB
  • Credit validity:  14 day
  • Data Tethering:  Allowed
  • This eSIM comes with a French phone number
  • Backed by one of the largest mobile networks in Europe

ORANGE HOLIDAY ZEN ESIM For Switzerland

switzerland tourist sim card

The Orange Holiday Zen eSIM is another excellent option for people traveling to Switzerland (and the rest of Europe) because it comes with 8GB of mobile data—which should suffice for most travelers who aren’t heavy data users. Heavy data users are better served by the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM which has 20GB of mobile data.

As an added bonus, the Orange Holiday ZEN eSIM doesn’t require registration unless you use it longer than 14 days.

  • Price:  $29.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  8GB
  • Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 30 min outside of Europe.
  • Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 200 outside of Europe.

HOLAFLY Switzerland ESIM

switzerland tourist sim card

Holafly  is a new data-only eSIM provider that I’ve used in Europe—the service was great and I got very fast data speeds (read my  Holafly eSIM Review  to learn more). Holafly sells both country-specific and Europe-wide data plans.

Unlike other eSIM data providers, Holafly’s plans give you unlimited data and their plans run from 5 to 90 days (they will throttle your data if you use excessive data).

  • 5 Days: $19
  • 10 Days: $34
  • 15 Days: $47
  • 20 Days: $54
  • 30 Days: $64
  • 60 Days: $84
  • 90 Days: $99
  • Service Speed:  5G/4G/LTE
  • Calls:  None
  • Texts/SMS:  None
  • Tethering:  No

O2 GO CARD ESIM For Switzerland

switzerland tourist sim card

You might also consider the O2 Go Card Plan —which operates on the O2 mobile network (the largest mobile network in the UK) so the service quality will be good.

The O2 Go Card Plan is slightly cheaper than the Orange Holiday Zen plan so you only get a very limited amount of EU calls/texts but the plan lasts for 30 days.

  • Price:  $24.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  10GB
  • Calls:  Includes $2 of credit to make calls within Europe
  • Texts/SMS:  Includes $2 of credit to send/receive texts within Europe
  • Credit validity:  30 day
  • This eSIM card comes with a Czech phone number

SMART COMFORT X ESIM Switzerland

switzerland tourist sim card

Ultra budget travelers might consider the Smart Comfort X eSIM —it’s a budget data-only eSIM plan that gives you 5GB of data but no calls or texts.

The Smart Comfort X eSIM is a third-party service so it connects to whatever local network is available—for example, France (Bouygues), Germany (O2), Italy (WIND), Spain (Telefonica), etc.

  • Price:  $17.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  5GB
  • Credit validity:  30 day

THE MAJOR SWISS MOBILE DATA PROVIDERS

switzerland tourist sim card

Three companies in Switzerland own their mobile infrastructure—  Swisscom ,  Sunrise , and  Salt . Swisscom  is the largest network and they have the best coverage and fastest speeds.  Sunrise  and  Salt  have made improvements over the past few years but Swisscom is still number one.

The downside to using one of these major carriers is the price. For example, a gigabyte of mobile data from Salt is around $17 so it’s easy to spend a lot on data. And you might have to pay an activation fee—for example, Swisscom charges $22 USD for the SIM (but that includes $22 worth of credit).

GENERAL TIPS FOR USING YOUR PHONE IN SWITZERLAND

switzerland tourist sim card

I’ve written extensively about using  smartphones and data plans in Europe  and tips for  buying SIM Cards For Visiting Europe . Below are some more helpful tips about using your phone in Switzerland and throughout Europe.

BRING A PORTABLE BATTERY CHARGER

Traveling with your phone will quickly drain your batteries so I highly recommend a portable battery. I use  Anker PowerCore 10000  because it’s tiny and affordable but there are multiple options.

BE AWARE OF THEFT WHILE USING YOUR PHONE

Pickpockets love stealing smartphones so pay attention while you’re using your phone, stash it away safely while on public transportation/crowds, and don’t set it down while you’re in public. Read my guide to  Pickpockets in Europe  for more anti-theft advice.

TAKE STEPS TO LOWER YOUR MOBILE DATA USAGE

It’s easy to burn through a lot of data because many apps use data in the background. Facebook, email, Instagram, Snapchat… those all constantly use data throughout the day without you knowing it. That’s it’s important to know how to limit your data usage.

  • USE AIRPLANE MODE AND BLOCK DATA TO SPECIFIC APPS:  I’ll put my phone in Airplane Mode because that disables all data (but GPS still works in Airplane Mode). You can also go into the settings and disable data access to each app. I’ll go in and turn every off except for things like Google Maps or others that I’ll use more frequently — this way when I turn off Airplane Mode only those apps that will use data. Then I’ll turn Airplane Mode back on when I’m done.
  • DOWNLOAD OFFLINE MAPS:  Google Maps lets you download entire city maps so they can be used offline. As a bonus, GPS doesn’t use data so offline Google Maps works fairly well (but not all functionality works). Here is a good  YouTube video  that explains everything.
  • SAVE HEAVY PHONE USAGE FOR WIFI:  Wait until you’re somewhere with a WiFi connection before you do any heavy streaming or download files.

Best eSim for Switzerland (A Guide For Travelers)

Traveling to Switzerland and you want to purchase an eSIM for Internet access in the country? You’re definitely in the right place then because this detailed guide will tell you all about the best eSims for Switzerland!

At A Glance: Our Favorite eSims for Switzerland

  • BEST UNLIMITED DATA PLANS Holafly
  • BEST ESIM WITH PHONE NUMBER Orange Holiday Zen eSim
  • CHEAPEST 5GB ESIM PLAN Ubigi
  • BEST MONTHLY UNLIMITED DATA Maya Mobile

I’ve listed the best options from international providers, as well as some of the popular local providers. Data plans included in this guide range from 1 GB to unlimited data, so there should be at least a few options suitable for your travel needs. I’ve also included a few eSim plans with regional coverage in Europe , in case your travel plans extend to countries outside Switzerland.

ESIM Product Comparison

Airalo is a very popular eSim provider, especially among travelers on short trips. Airalo usually has the best prices for their 7 and 15-day data packs, and Switzerland is no exception . Their eSim plans for Switzerland start at just $4.5, which is a steal considering it provides you with Internet access for an entire week:

  • 1 GB / 7 Days for $4.5
  • 2 GB/ 15 Days for $8
  • 3 GB / 30 Days for $10
  • 5 GB / 30 Days for $14.5
  • 10 GB / 30 Days for $24
  • 20 GB / 30 Days for $38

Airalo’s eSims connect to the Sunrise network, which is the second-best network operator in the country, right after Swisscom. It’s worth noting that most other providers offer eSims for the Salt network, which comes in third place right after Sunrise.

Another great thing about Airalo is that they make it very easy to activate your eSim and top it up should you need more data. You can purchase additional data on their website or through the Airalo app, as well as have an overview of your data usage while in Switzerland.

  • Great value for money
  • Internet access through Sunrise network
  • Easy top-ups and activation
  • No unlimited data options

Holafly is an eSim provider best known for its unlimited data plans for Switzerland. It’s great that Holafly Switzerland is able to offer unlimited data, and the price depends on how long the eSim is valid. This provider has plans that are suitable for short and long stays:

  • 5 Days for $19
  • 7 Days for $27
  • 10 Days for $34
  • 15 Days for $47
  • 20 Days for $54
  • 30 Days for $64
  • 60 Days for $84
  • 90 Days for $99

The best thing about the Holafly eSims is that they can access Swisscom, Sunrise, and Salt. These are the top three network operators in Switzerland, so you’re guaranteed a fast and stable Internet connection everywhere in the country.

The main downside of Holafly is that they don’t allow tethering and hotspots. You can access the Internet only on the device on which the eSim is installed, and you can’t share that connection with a different device. Because of that, I personally think that Holafly plans are overpriced, especially when you can get a 30-day unlimited data plan from Maya Mobile for $15 less.

  • Unlimited data plans
  • Access to the three best network operators
  • No data sharing

Nomad is an international eSim provider known for their variety of short-term and long-term data packs. They usually offer Internet access through multiple providers, and their data plans for countries in Europe are often affordably priced. Nomad’s data plans for Switzerland are:

  • 1 GB / 7 Days for $7
  • (Salt) 1 GB / 7 Days for $6
  • 3 GB / 30 Days for $12
  • (Salt) 3 GB / 15 Days for $12
  • 5GB / 30 Days for $14
  • (Salt) 5 GB / 15 Days for $14
  • 10 GB / 30 Days for $20
  • (Salt) 10 GB / 30 Days for $19
  • (Salt) 15 GB / 30 Days for $27
  • (Salt) 20 GB / 30 Days for $33
  • 20 GB / 30 Days for $30

The only issue I have with Nomad’s eSim plans is that there’s a discrepancy in the pricing. Sometimes the plans for the Salt network are cheaper than the plans for Truphone, and other times it’s the other way around. In any case, the price difference is just a few dollars, so it’s not really such a big deal.

Nomad eSims allow you access to either Salt or Truphone network. Truphone is an international provider that partners with local providers, but I have no idea who they partner with in Switzerland. In any case, I wouldn’t recommend Nomad over Airalo or even Maya Mobile, because they are more expensive and limited to the third-best provider in the country.

  • Variety of data plans
  • Choose from two network operators
  • One of the pricier options

Orange Holiday Europe eSim

Orange Holiday Europe eSim is an all-inclusive eSim you should consider purchasing if you need a phone number in Switzerland. This is the only eSim out of the bunch that comes with a phone number, as well as free minutes and texts, in addition to 20 GB of data.

The eSim is valid for 14 days and retails for 40 Euros. It is pricey, but it’s a good deal if you expect you’ll be making many phone calls while you are in Switzerland. It’s worth noting that the phone number is French, but you can use it without data roaming charges in Europe.

Another great thing about this eSim is that it’s valid in approximately 50 European countries, so it’s an excellent option for travelers who plan to explore outside Switzerland as well. One thing to keep in mind is that you can use this eSim without registration for up to 30 days. After that, you need to register the eSim with a valid government ID, as is required by French laws.

  • French phone number included
  • Free minutes and texts

Orange Holiday Zen eSim

Orange Holiday Zen is a great all-inclusive eSim plan for travelers who like the idea of a phone number, but don’t want to pay 40 Euros for it. This eSim replicates all the great things about the Holiday Europe plan – valid for 14 days in about 50 countries, free texts and minutes, a French phone number, and data sharing.

The main difference between this eSim and its pricier alternative is that Holiday Zen includes 8 GB of data, as well as fewer free minutes and texts. It’s also just 20 Euros, so it’s much better value for money than the other plan. In my opinion, this is the best eSim you can buy if you’re traveling in Europe for up to two weeks; the data allowance is more than generous, and the phone number is a welcome addition.

  • All-inclusive eSim with phone number
  • Registration is necessary for use longer than 30 days

Ubigi is a great international provider of Swiss eSIM plans , especially for countries in Europe. Their data plans for Switzerland are excellent value for money, especially for travelers who want an eSim plan with a large data allowance. You can get 50 GB for less than $1 per Gigabyte, which is pretty amazing. Ubigi’s data plans for Switzerland are:

  • 3 GB / 30 Days for $9
  • 5 GB / 30 Days (Renewable) for $9
  • 10 GB / 30 Days for $19
  • 24 GB / 12 Months for $38
  • 50 GB / 30 Days for $49

In addition to these five plans, it’s important to note that Ubigi also includes Switzerland in quite a few of its regional plans. You can get plans that cover the European Union, EU and the UK, USA and Europe, and a bunch of other combinations, as well as a global plan. The individual country plans for Switzerland are the best value for money, and they all include Internet access through the Salt mobile network.

  • Best value for money
  • Renewable monthly plan
  • Switzerland included in multiple regional plans
  • Access to just one network operator
  • No plans with less than 3 GB

Maya Mobile

Maya Mobile is another popular eSim provider worth considering, especially if you’re looking for an unlimited data plan. This provider offers affordable 30-day plans with a limited data allowance, as well as unlimited data plans for Switzerland and the Europe region, both for just $49. Here’s an overview of the different Maya Mobile eSim plans for Switzerland:

  • 1 GB / 30 Days for $5
  • 3 GB / 30 Days for $8
  • 5 GB / 30 Days for $12
  • Unlimited Data / 30 Days for $49
  • Unlimited Data (Europe) / 30 Days for $49

Another reason to consider Maya Mobile over any other provider is that their eSims can access both Salt and Sunrise networks. This is especially useful for travelers who want to explore outside of the bigger Swiss cities and want to be certain they will have a stable Internet connection even in the more remote regions.

  • Cheapest unlimited data for a month
  • Access to two network operators
  • Affordable 30-day plans
  • No short-term data packs

Benefits of Getting an eSim in Switzerland

Not sure if it’s worth getting an eSim in Switzerland? If you want to have Internet access all the time it absolutely is. An eSim is significantly cheaper than data roaming charges, plus it will ensure that you have Internet access everywhere in the country, which can be especially useful if you plan to explore outside of the bigger cities.

Embedded sim cards are more convenient than physical sim cards because you can easily buy them online, set them up on your phone, and then just activate them when you arrive in Switzerland. On the other hand, physical sim cards usually include a phone number and they tend to be cheaper, so don’t give up on prepaid local sim cards entirely, if your smartphone still supports the technology.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSims in Switzerland

Switzerland has three major network operators that offer eSims to their customers – Salt, Sunrise, and Swisscom. If you have a dual sim phone, you can use any one of these eSims along with your traditional sim card/eSim.

With Salt, both prepaid and postpaid customers are eligible for embedded sim cards. But you will need to purchase the eSim in a physical store because the online shop allows delivery only to addresses in Switzerland and Lichtenstein. Also, it’s worth noting that Salt’s prepaid plans include a fee of 15 CHF per 1 GB of data, plus there’s a 59 CHF fee for swapping an existing sim card to an eSim.

Switzerland has two other prepaid eSim options worth considering. Sunrise offers better deals than Salt, and you can purchase an eSim online with your prepaid pack. They’re not the best deal if you want cheap texts and minutes, but they have some surprisingly affordable-short term mobile data packs. You can get unlimited data for as little as 2.5 CHF per day, which is an excellent value if you’re in the country for a short time.

Swisscom also lets you buy eSims online with their prepaid packs, at no additional cost. The plans from this provider range from 2 CHF per day for unlimited surfing to 150 CHF for unlimited data, SMS, and calls for three months in Switzerland. Swisscom also has 5 CHF and 10 CHF monthly packs with unlimited low-speed data at 128 kbit/s.

Devices Compatible with eSim in Switzerland

All devices that support eSim technology will be compatible with an eSim in Switzerland. This includes all iPhones from the Apple iPhone XS onward, third-generation Google Pixel phones and later, and Samsung Galaxy S phones from the S20 and later.

Some other Android phones are also compatible with eSims, as well as tablets, smartwatches, and even some laptops. You can google your device to find out whether it supports eSim technology, or you can check by dialing *#06# if it’s your smartphone you’re not sure about.

Dialing this number will bring up a list of several serial codes for your mobile device. An EID number will indicate that your device is compatible with eSims; the lack of an EID number suggests your phone isn’t compatible with virtual sim card technology and you might have to rely on a physical sim card instead.

Data Needed When Traveling to Switzerland

How much data you need for your trip to Switzerland depends on two main things. The first one is the length of your trip – 3 GB should be enough for trips of up to two weeks, but consider 5-10 GB for stays of up to a month.

The second thing to consider is your mobile data usage habit and whether you want to share your connection with others. If it’s just you and you need Internet access only to check map directions, emails, and social media, you will be fine with one of the cheaper packs.

On the other hand, if you want to work while you’re staying in Switzerland or you want to set up a hotspot so that you can share the Internet with others, consider a data pack with a larger, or even unlimited data allowance. That way you don’t have to police other people’s usage, and everyone can watch as many TikToks as they like.

Cost of eSim in Switzerland

The cost of an eSim for Switzerland is surprisingly very low. Embedded sim cards for this country are not more expensive than eSims for other European countries, and you can get quite a few regional plans that will cover the entire Europe.

Some of the cheapest eSim plans for Switzerland retail for less than $1 per Gigabyte, and they go up to $7. It depends on the provider, but it’s worth noting that there are also some very affordable unlimited data packs for Switzerland worth considering.

If you’re staying in the country for a week or less but you need a lot of data, consider one of the local eSim plans. They’re 2-3 CHF per day for unlimited data, so great value for money.

Telecommunication Companies in Switzerland

Switzerland currently has three main mobile network operators that offer different services and products. They all provide prepaid SIM cards for both local and foreign visitors. Some of them offer calls and texts plus mobile internet, some others just have data packages. The following telecommunication companies provide standard, micro, and nano-SIM cards and they can be found at airports and official stores of each company. People can top-up those SIMs at some post offices, train stations, kiosks or supermarkets. You can also do this using your credit card and visiting the company’s official web page. Best Prepaid SIM Card for Switzerland in 2024

Best Prepaid SIM Card for Switzerland in 2024

As a frequent traveler, having internet access abroad is absolutely essential. Being disconnected while exploring a new place is not only inconvenient, it can also be unsafe. This makes choosing the right SIM card critical for any trip to Switzerland.

After visiting Switzerland many times, I’ve experimented with most of the SIM card options available and want to share my recommendations on the  best Switzerland SIM card  for travelers in 2024.

Switzerland is known for breathtaking mountain views, delicious chocolate and cheese, financial institutions, and high prices. Staying connected with a good data plan doesn’t have to mean paying a small fortune though. With some research and advanced planning, you can find an affordable  Switzerland SIM card  that keeps you online.

This article will give you all the information you need to pick the ideal SIM card for your trip duration, data usage needs, devices, and budget.

An Overview on Switzerland SIM Cards

First, let’s go over some quick facts about getting mobile data and choosing a SIM in Switzerland:

  • Switzerland is not part of the EU, so EU-based SIM cards generally do not include Switzerland. You need a dedicated Swiss SIM.
  • Most modern phones now support eSIM technology, which provides added flexibility and convenience over old-style physical SIM cards. Using an eSIM for your Switzerland trip is highly recommended.
  • You can buy a Swiss SIM card in advance online before your trip and have it delivered to your home address. This saves time and hassle once you arrive.
  • Another option is purchasing a Swiss SIM on location once you arrive in Switzerland. You’ll usually need to provide a passport or photo ID to register the SIM card.
  • Major Switzerland cell networks include Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt. Their stores and sales kiosks can be found at airports and in major cities. Smaller independent carrier shops also offer SIM card deals.
  • Prepaid SIMs without contracts are widely available. Payment options include buying talk time credit, paying for a set data allowance, or getting unlimited data plans.
  • Do your research in advance to estimate your data needs so you don’t pay for more than required. Typical tourist use averages 500MB to 2GB per week. Heavy usage with media streaming can exceed 5GB per week.

Now let’s explore some of the best  Swiss SIM card  choices in more detail.

SIM Card for Switzerland

Best Switzerland eSIM Card: Holafly

In my search for the best mobile data solution for Switzerland travel, eSIM plans kept rising to the top. For uncomplicated convenience, flexibility and overall value, I can firmly recommend Holafly as the leading choice.

As a pioneer in eSIM data plans and technology, Holafly made getting set up with unlimited high-speed mobile data in Switzerland incredibly simple even for non-tech-savvy travelers.

Why I Recommend Holafly eSIM for Switzerland

Here are the key benefits that put Holafly ahead of the competition as my top  SIM card Switzerland  provider:

Works on Most Devices  – Holafly supports eSIM activation on iPhone XS and above or Android phones like Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy. Just check your device against their list to confirm compatibility before ordering. New phones produced after 2018 generally have eSIM capacity.

No Physical SIM Card  – Simply scan the QR code Holafly emails you to digitally install their data plan. Much more convenient than trying to swap out tiny plastic SIM cards while traveling.

Easy Online Purchase  – Ordering takes only minutes on Holafly’s website with no need to visit a local store. Receive your eSIM activation immediately via email afterwards.

Flexibility  – Holafly allows choosing your own plan duration. Select anything from 24 hours up to a full month of service tailored to your trip. Extend in 24 hour increments if needed once there.

Unlimited High-Speed Data  – Holafly does not throttle data speeds. You get uncapped unlimited 4G/LTE data on Switzerland’s best networks, sufficient even for HD streaming.

Multi-Country Options  – Holafly offers dedicated Switzerland plans. But you can also buy their Europe-wide plans covering Switzerland plus 30 other European nations on one eSIM.

Fair Pricing  – Holafly provides exceptional value, delivering Swiss eSIM data for as little as $3 per day. Competitors struggle to match this level of service and flexibility at these rates.

Reliable Connectivity  – Backed by Switzerland’s leading Sunrise network, Holafly eSIM customers can count on solid nationwide connectivity even while traveling in remote mountain regions.

For sheer ease of getting online quickly, choosing Holafly as your  Swiss SIM card  provider makes things smooth and stress-free.

As someone who has tested lots of Europe SIM card options, I can fully stand behind them as the best for effortless, quality mobile data in Switzerland.

Runner-Up: Airalo Switzerland eSIM

Airalo emerges as a strong second choice for Switzerland travelers wanting the advantages of an eSIM solution without breaking the bank.

They sell affordable prepaid data eSIM plans starting around $4 USD for 1GB short-term use up to $45 USD for a 30 day 20GB unlimited high-speed data pass.

While priced very competitively, Airalo does cap data use with their lower cost plans beyond the stated full speed data thresholds. Heavy media streaming can impact your speeds if going over the plan’s limits.

But Airalo provides reliable connectivity from Switzerland carrier Sunrise at reasonable rates for lighter normal tourism usage. Their eSIM also works directly in your phone without any external hardware.

One limitation is Airalo does not support WiFi hotspot/tethering capability – the data is for use just on your smartphone, not for connecting other devices.

But for quick, fuss-free data at a reasonable cost from your phone, Airalo makes for a solid budget-friendly runner-up Swiss eSIM option.

I suggest reviewing their various plan allowances against your own intended usage to see if one suits your upcoming trip.

Local Swiss Provider eSIM Alternatives

Switzerland’s top telecom operators also offer eSIM support directly as an alternative for data connectivity.

Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt now provide homegrown eSIM solutions. However, their prepaid plans with capped data tend to work out more costly than the unlimited eSIM options from Holafly or Airalo.

But if you need mobile hotspot WiFi tethering unavailable from Holafly and Airalo, some local operator plans may permit it. Do your homework as terms vary by carrier.

You will also have the convenience of local Swiss customer support in case any usage issues occur during your travels.

Just be aware that their prepaid data rates typically cost around double the prices of third-party eSIM providers for the same or often less full-speed data amounts.

Unless you specifically require a provider plan with WiFi hotspot support or tied to a major Swiss telco, an independent company like Holafly or Airalo will serve most visitor needs better.

How to Buy a Prepaid SIM Card In Switzerland

Purchasing a prepaid SIM card for your phone after arrival remains an option too if favoring a traditional plastic SIM format.

Nearly all stores for Swiss mobile carriers Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt offer prepaid SIM card deals for tourists and temporary visitors.

You will need your passport to register any new SIM purchase while in Switzerland. By law, all SIM cards sold require ID verification.

Prepaid SIMs with varying amounts of included credits are available for sale on a pay-as-you-go basis. Top up additional talk minutes, texts or data amounts as needed by purchasing top-up vouchers online or from tagged retail vendors displaying a carrier’s logo.

But do keep usage of any capped data SIM plans in check to avoid costly overage fees. Streaming lots of video content or other data-heavy activities can quickly exceed cheaper prepaid plan limits.

While Swiss carriers have expanded their prepaid plan selection recently, steering clear of pricier contracts unnecessarily tying you to a single provider long-term generally makes better financial sense for a limited vacation.

Compared to most local operator prepaid deals, reputable third-party eSIM companies like Holafly frequently work out cheaper for comparable or often better services.

Moldova SIM Card Alternative for Switzerland

An interesting option I recently discovered for getting low cost prepaid data in Switzerland is buying a SIM card from Moldcell mobile carrier in nearby Moldova.

Moldcell has very attractively priced tourism focused Europe prepaid plans with generous Swiss roaming included along with much of Europe.

Their Moldcell SIM also provides great value if continuing travels beyond Switzerland across wider Europe. For only 20 Euros per month, you get 15GB full speed LTE data + 3000 free Europe-zone minutes and SMS messages.

Switzerland receives the same SIM card benefits as Moldova for this pan-European plan with no roaming surcharges. Moldova belongs to the EU “Orange” roaming zone despite not being an European Union member state themselves.

But with free data + calling access to Switzerland and lots of Europe on a single SIM, checking Moldcell’s prepaid deals merits consideration for longer continental journeys.

You can order their SIM card online shipped to your home address before arriving. Just supply your passport details during purchase.

Then once in Switzerland or elsewhere in Europe, top up more data or minutes as needed at their widespread contracted local sales outlets. For Europe-wide travel flexibility at a great value, Moldcell delivers nicely.

Which Switzerland SIM Card Is Best?

To recap, here are my top recommended picks for getting a  Swiss SIM card  whether opting for the latest eSIM technology or a conventional prepaid physical SIM card:

  • Best Overall  – Holafly Switzerland eSIM
  • Runner Up  – Airalo Switzerland eSIM
  • Top Local Providers  – Swisscom / Sunrise / Salt Swiss eSIM
  • Unique Europe-Wide Option  – Moldcell Europe Prepaid SIM

Review each against your own specific requirements for network compatibility, intended travel plans, device eSIM support, budget and priorities like flexibility or local customer service.

With the variety now available, one of these leading options should readily fulfill getting you affordable prepaid access to fast mobile data throughout your travels in Switzerland.

Staying connected abroad remains essential these days for travel planning on the fly or an emergency. I hope reviewing the best SIM card recommendations for Switzerland here gets you started on the right foot.

Let me know if this breakdown helps guide your choice or if any other questions come up! Have an amazing trip…

SIM Cards in Switzerland: How & Where to Purchase Them — And Best Alternatives in 2024

Regardless of whether you're visiting Switzerland to take the cablecar to the top of the Jungfrau or walk along the creaky steps of Lucerne's iconic Chapel Bridge, you'll probably be wondering how to connect your smartphone to the internet as soon as possible after you arrive.

That's where getting a local SIM card comes into the picture. Fortunately for you, in most cases, finding and purchasing a Swiss SIM card should be a breeze, and in this short guide, we show you the two major ways in which you can get the job done affordably and effortlessly!

Facts About SIM Cards in Switzerland

  • Local SIM cards in Switzerland are widely available, even for tourists. However, at tourist locations such as airports, you can expect to pay a surcharge.
  • We recommend opting for an eSIM instead of a local SIM card. eSIMs can be purchased and installed at home before you leave for Switzerland, giving you mobile data from the moment you arrive in the country.
  • Airalo is a market-leading eSIM provider known for its attractive per-gigabyte rates. The cheapest eSIM bundle to Switzerland costs just $4.50 and gives you a speedy and reliable connection via local networks like Swisscom, Sunrise, and Salt.

How To Get a SIM Card in Switzerland

If you're planning your trip to Switzerland, it shouldn't be a surprise to learn that you won't be able to call, text, or access the web on the go with your smartphone as you usually would at home. And if you do manage to get connected via roaming, it can result in hefty additional charges. That's where SIM cards come into the picture. By getting yourself a local Swiss SIM card (or, as we'll see, a digital eSIM), you'll be able to connect to the internet via mobile data while on the move and, depending on the bundle you choose, even send SMSes or make local phone calls.

To get a SIM card in Switzerland, you basically have two options:

Option 1: Local Physical SIM Cards

Buying a local SIM card in Switzerland works in much the same way as buying a SIM card does in your home country : you purchase a small microchip with a fixed prepaid amount of data loaded onto it for a once-off fee. (Especially as a tourist visiting the country for a shorter period, you probably won't need a recurring monthly contract or a more advanced bundle with additional minutes or text, but the option is normally available too, if you like.) You then insert this chip into your smartphone — and away you go!

These physical SIM card microchips come in three main sizes:

  • Standard SIM: 25x15mm (about the size of a standard postage stamp)
  • Micro SIM: 15x12mm (a bit smaller than a dime)
  • Nano SIM: 12.3x8.8mm (about the size of a peanut)

The image below illustrates the differences in size, with the three smaller SIM cards on the right side representing standard, micro, and nano SIMs respectively, and the larger SIM card on the left (known as 1FF) no longer being used these days:

Illustration of different SIM card sizes.

Most SIM card retailers offer only nano SIMs these days, including in Switzerland. But if the retailer you visit doesn't offer nano SIMs (or in case the SIM cards sold don't fit into your phone), you can ask for a SIM card adapter, which is normally very cheap and available in most cell phone shops or kiosks.

If you run out of data, you can normally recharge your SIM with ease, too. To do this, visit your network provider's website or go to the counter of pretty much any cell phone shop, convenience store, kiosk, or tourist information in Switzerland and ask about data recharge. Many Swiss retailers countrywide offer data packages for major networks like Swisscom, Sunrise, and Salt, making it a quick and accessible option.

If you don't plan on using your Swiss SIM for a future vacation after you arrive home, make sure you cut your SIM card chip in two with a sturdy pair of scissors to prevent fraudsters from pulling any personal data from your card, and, if possible, recycle it with other electronic waste.

Option 2: eSIM Cards

A digital alternative to physical SIM cards, eSIMs are regular SIM cards that don't require inserting an actual microchip  into your device while providing the exact same benefits. Newer smartphones (but also smartwatches, tablets, and other devices) can be equipped with eSIMs, and since you don't need a physical microchip to install an eSIM, you can also get one before you even take off on your trip to Switzerland. To do this, you just need to visit an online eSIM service, purchase the eSIM you want, and follow the instructions to download and install it onto your device.

switzerland tourist sim card

Like regular SIM cards, prepaid eSIMs come bundled with a certain fixed amount of data (or, more rarely, SMSes or telephone minutes) which you can use at your leisure while traveling in Switzerland. You get to choose the package you want, and you can generally also extend your eSIM's validity easily right from an app.

In general, eSIMs cost about the same as physical Swiss SIMs or are slightly more expensive per gigabyte, but in our opinion, their accessibility and eco-friendliness make them the better option for most travelers. We delve into why a bit later in this article.

Network Providers in Switzerland

Whether you use a physical SIM or eSIM, it's good to keep in mind that Swiss telecommunications are dominated by a handful of network operators. These networks provide the infrastructure that allows you to use mobile data on the go. In Switzerland, the biggest players are listed below, so be on the lookout for their names on storefronts (if you're looking for a physical SIM card) or on the top right-hand corner of your smartphone (which shows you which network you're currently connected to):

  • and others...

In general, network connectivity for mobile data in Switzerland is outstanding , meaning that you won't have any issues accessing the web from any of the local networks, even in more rural or mountainous areas of the country.

Where to Buy a SIM Card in Swiss Cities

In general, it's very easy to buy a Swiss SIM card. Normally, you can buy a SIM once you arrive at the airport, but you can typically also do so at shops, convenience stores, and kiosks in city centres, malls, or business or market districts. (Don't forget that SIM cards aren't only sold in brick-and-mortar outlets and sometimes in pop-up booths or temporary stalls, depending on where you are.)

In Switzerland, you'll easily find SIM card dealers in the following locations:

  • Zurich Airport,
  • Geneva Cointrin International Airport,
  • Zurich Main Train Station,
  • City centres (e.g. Bern, Zurich, Geneva, etc.).

Digital eSIMs: A Better Option in Switzerland

switzerland tourist sim card

As we saw earlier, eSIMs generally have numerous advantages and are often a better alternative to using a regular SIM card for most tourists. In our opinion, the most significant advantages include:

  • internet immediately upon arrival in Switzerland,
  • no negotiating with SIM card sellers at the airport,
  • transparent and fair pricing,
  • online extension is often possible,
  • credit card payment is possible,
  • local telecom provider networks are used.

However, there is one potential issue around compatibility. Not all devices support eSIMs. If your device was released before late 2019, we recommend double-checking on the internet or contacting a representative from an eSIM service to confirm whether your device is compatible before you purchase an eSIM. In general, the following devices will support eSIMs though:

Airalo  is an excellent eSIM provider for Switzerland . Its online platform offers global access to eSIMs through collaboration with big local telecom providers. In Switzerland, for example, Airalo works directly with Swisscom, Sunrise, and Salt to provide you with high-speed coverage directly from their networks, wherever you are in the country.

Once-off prices for eSIMs for Switzerland range from $4.50 to $38 and include between 1GB and 20GB of data. Most travellers should be able to get by with these amounts without any problems.

We recommend Airalo in general, and especially if you travel often, the service provides an excellent connectivity companion while you're abroad.

Man Stunned to Be Hit with $143,000 Phone Bill After Trip Abroad — How to Make Sure You Avoid the Same Fate

Travel expert Rani Cheema tells PEOPLE how to make sure your phone isn't roaming and more tips

A Florida man recently made headlines when he returned from a trip to Switzerland and was greeted by a phone bill for $143,000.

According to local outlet ABC Action News, Rene Remund had visited his local T-Mobile store ahead of the vacation to notify the service provider of his travel plans. He was reportedly told by an employee, “You’re covered.”

However, after freely sending photos and messages throughout his vacation he was charged for using 9.5 gigabytes (GB) of roaming data.

It was only after ABC Action News contacted T-Mobile’s corporate offices that the company offered to credit Remund’s account for the entire amount.

Accidentally incurring exorbitant charges during an excursion overseas isn't rare, unfortunately. But it is easy to avoid. PEOPLE talked to Rani Cheema, founder and travel business coach at Cheema's Travel, to find out what Remund did wrong and how to avoid the same fate

While she says it’s common for travelers not to realize their phone is using roaming data, it’s usually “not to that point” of racking up a six-figure tab. “It's usually first-time travelers or newbies who think they can use their phone everywhere at any time,” she says.

But it's not difficult to make sure you're covered before you leave — or even after you arrive.

Always Call Customer Service Instead of Going to a Store

Cheema says Remund’s first mistake was going in person to the T-Mobile store rather than calling its customer service line.

“Number one: never go to the store,” she says. “Never, ever, ever. Because they're there to sell phones . . . They're there to make commissions."

Customers often assume the sales associates are also experts on various coverage plans, but Cheema says that isn't always the case.

And if a customer receives inaccurate information, like Remund seemingly did, there's no way to prove it. At the store, "your conversation's not being recorded. So call the service provider, always," says Cheema.

When speaking with the customer service agent, confirm whether your plan covers international use — and if that includes phone calls, text messages and internet browsing. If it doesn't, you can consider upgrading your plan or purchasing a temporary package so that you can use your phone abroad as you would at home. Several of the big carriers offer a $10 per day flat rate option.

Check Your Phone's Status as Soon as You Land

Once you arrive in your international destination, she says to “look at all the notifications” on your phone right away.

“As soon as you turn your phone on, you'll see it says in the upper right-hand corner if it's roaming or looking for a connection,” she says. “And then your phone alerts you that, ‘Hey, you're in a new country. We recognize this. Here are our rules.’"

If you see that alert and don't have an international plan, simply turn off roaming in your phone’s settings or put your phone on airplane mode. When you connect to wifi, you'll be able to use your phone normally.

Don't Have an International Plan? Get a SIM Card

Cheema says if a traveler hasn't secured international coverage prior to the trip, they have the option to purchase a SIM card once they arrive, which allow your phone to connect to local networks without roaming fees.

“SIM cards are great,” she says. “You can get them at train stations or the airport. You can also use them to make local calls if you need to make dinner reservations," says Cheema.

To limit the amount of data you're using, try turning off "cellular data" for the apps you won't be using in your Settings.

Or Simply Stick to Using Wifi Only

Another option, Cheema advises,  is to “just connect to Wi-Fi everywhere you go" and keep your phone on airplane mode for the duration of your trip. You can enable wifi calling in your settings, so you can make phone calls, text and use the internet as you normally would.
